“VALUE ADDED “ THE SEMEX ADVANTAGE One of the most overused or mis-understood terms in the industry is “Value Added”. What does that really mean? To Semex, we strive to add extra value into every dose of semen that we sell to provide our clients with the opportunity to add extra value to their operation. Our goal is to add extra value into every facet of our operation. This process starts at the genetic selection stage as we try to balance science and cow sense in one package. We utilize all the tools available to allow for the highest predictability possible but at the same time not sacrifice the selection on structure, phenotype and soundness. The “value added” that we talk about may be seen years down the road when you have the daughters in production and realize the critical scrutiny and research that went into the genetic selection early on. Our goal continues to be able to select genetics that fit our key markets globally. We understand that we can’t take a one size fits all approach and what may fit market requirements in one market may not be an industry fit for another. Our selection focused on genetics designed to fit key markets around the world with traits and strength required to achieve optimum profitability in each of those markets.

Our philosophy remains that of a balanced approach and not to sacrifice extremes in one trait for that of another. While we continue to search for animals that can push the paradigm, we ensure that it didn’t come at a cost. In our pursuit of some sires that can be leading edge for marbling and quality grade, we ensure this didn’t sacrifice structure and growth. In our pursuit of leading edge performance, we ensure this didn’t come at a cost to efficiency and carcass qualities. Our Gold Standard production continue to lead the industry fertility allowing breeders to get more cows pregnant, more calves on the ground, tighter calving schedules and increased profitability. We continue to look at new solutions, products and strategies that allow our clients to achieve optimal results. We know that the sale doesn’t stop once the cow is bred and our Global Beef Solutions brand continues to aid our clients around the world with the tools they need to be successful in their operations. We are only successful if our clients are successful. We will continue to listen to our clients, partners and consumers across the globe and work on solutions that continue to affect their operations to provide the latest in genetics, technology and beef production solutions. BWT (Birth Weight)

Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis.

WWT (Weaning Weight) YWT (Yearling Weight) SC (Scrotal Circumference) Purebred Purebred is defined as having the blood percentage of the breed at 99.9 % or less and have some influence of blood from another breed. Fullblood Fullblood cattle are 100% pure and have no influence from any other breed. Fleckvieh Fleckvieh is the German or Austrian term for Simmental. This term is used to describe fullblood cattle that are represented in the Semex program with a high percentage of the pedigree derived from original German or Austrian pedigrees. Frame Score A score based on a subjective evaluation of height or actual measurement of hip height. Heterozygous Polled These bulls are polled but carry one polled gene and one horned gene, therefore they may sire horned calves when mated to horned cows or other hetero polled cows. Homozygous Polled These bulls have a 99.9% probability of being homozygous polled, having been verified either through DNA testing or having been verified through mating to horned cows. PRODUCTION Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers

Heterozygous Black These sires are black but carry one red gene therefore will produce some red calves when mated to red females.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Homozygous Black These bulls have a 99.9% probability of being homozygous black. You should expect these bulls to sire black calves when mated to red or black cows. These bulls have been verified through independent third party DNA testing.

Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. EPDs are enhanced by genomic results generated by:

M&G, MWWT or TM (Total Maternal) reflects a sire’s ability to transmit growth genetics combined with milking abilities to his daughters. Mature Weight EPD (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

CARCASS Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

MATERNAL

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as firstcalf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value

$VALUE INDEXES $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. • Quality Grade ($QG) $QG represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD contributes to $QG. • Yield Grade ($YG) $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

Scurs There are additional genes that affect hornlike growth on an animal’s head. The major gene for scurs SC is thought to involve an inheritance process that is separate from the processes that determines if an animal is polled. Absence of the scur gene is expressed by the symbol Sn. Scurs are incompletely developed horns which are generally loose and moveable beneath the skin. In older animals they may become attached to the skull. Because the gene for scurs is transmitted separately, it generally has no effect on the presence or absence of horns. Not all cattle carry the gene for scurs and not all polled cattle lack the gene. In a horned herd, the presence of the gene is hidden by the horns and will not be discovered until the horns are bred off. The way the gene is expressed depends on the sex of the animal. In males, SC is dominant. This means that the presence of a single SC gene will cause the bull to be scurred. In females, the SC is recessive so a cow must possess two copies of the gene in order to be scurred. If she possesses one copy of the gene she may pass the scurred condition onto some of her calves but will not be scurred herself.

Additive Adjustment Factors to Estimate Across-Breed EPD

It is important to remember that EPDs are not perfect when comparing bulls even within a breed; therefore, AB-EPDs are somewhat less accurate when comparing animals of different breeds. AB-EPDs are most effective for selecting bulls of two or more breeds for use in systematic crossbreeding. When evaluating the potential application of AB-EPDs as a tool for a particular breeding program, commercial cow-calf producers must first examine the needs of their individual operations. Producers must diligently review their breed choices and crossbreeding systems in order to provide the best sire selection match to cow genetic type, environment, feed resources, and market targets.

Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) in Clay Center, Neb., develop breed adjustment factors annually so that expected progeny difference (EPD) values can be compared across breeds. This process allows the estimation of across-breed EPDs, sometimes referred to as AB-EPDs. The across-breed EPD concept was introduced in the late 1980’s and continues to spark interest with commercial bull buyers using more than one breed of bull. This is mostly due to the fact that without adjustments, the within-breed EPDs cannot be used to directly compare animals of different breeds, since the values are typically computed separately for each breed. Table 1 presents the most recent MARC adjustment factors that can be added to the EPDs of animals of different breeds, adjusting their EPD values to an Angus equivalent. The adjustment factors, given relative to an Angus equivalent of zero for each trait, take into account breed

Adjusted weights and weight ratios accompanied by linear measurements for height have added another dimension to evaluating fat-lean ratio of an individual animal in a performance program. No one frame size for an animal will be best for all feed resources, breeding systems, and markets. Long-term economic return should determine the optimum frame-size range within a given set of resources, breeding system, and market specifications.

Accuracy and Associated Possible Change The following table lists the possible change values associated with each EPD trait at the various accuracy levels. Possible change is expressed as “+” or “-” pounds of EPD and can be described as a measure of expected change or potential deviation between the EPD and the “true” progeny difference. This confidence range depends on the standard error of prediction for an EPD. For a given accuracy, about two-thirds of the time an animal should have a “true” progeny difference within the range of the EPD plus or minus the possible change value.

For example, a sire with an accuracy of .65 and birth weight EPD of +1.0 is expected to have his “true” progeny value falling within ±.92 pounds for birth weight EPD (ranging between +0.1 and +1.9) about two-thirds of the time. With the conservative approach taken with respect to heritabilities in the Angus evaluation, actual EPD changes of animals within the population are much less than statistics would indicate.
