The Tesco Integrated Beef Scheme - TIBS

Established as an Aberdeen Angus scheme in 2012, a first for the beef industry, The Tesco Integrated Beef Scheme (TIBS), has developed steadily over the years. And now has around 1,200 British beef farmers supplying Aberdeen Angus cattle for the Tesco Finest range, with a bonus received for prime carcases that meet certain criteria.

The Buitelaar Group

The Buitelaar Group specialises in providing sustainable, higher welfare beef supply chain solutions. Using Buitelaar approved sires gives the best chance of producing better quality calves required by the supply chain returning a higher premium to the producer.

Meadow Quality market young and reared calves, working year round with Red Tractor approved dairy and beef farmers, striving to meet the requirements of all stakeholders in the supply chain.

BEEF CARCASE TRAITS PROJECT

This Carcase Traits chart shows EBVs as vertical red bars. Bars upward of centre indicate fewer days to slaughter, heavier carcases, superior conformation, fatter carcases, and greater carcase growth.

With more than 20 million cattle records, The American Angus Association holds the largest database of its kind among beef breeds. Extensive performance programs are geared toward both pure bred and commercial producers, providing a wide range of selection tools to evaluate genetic needs.

To generate genomic enhanced expected progeny differences (EPDs), The American Angus Association run weekly genetic evaluations of millions of animals in its database and more than 950,000 genotyped animals.

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Lower EPD value indicates lower actual BW.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Larger value indicates higher yearling weight.

Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. RADG is presented in pounds per day, with a higher value being more favourable.

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
