EDITORIAL We often say that health is what matters the most. A dying rich man would be willing to give all his wealth in exchange for living a bit longer. But our parents did not bring us into this world only to be healthy—and health is not our only objective in our day-to-day struggle. Sometimes we don’t even take care of ourselves as we should. We’re made for bigger things in life. Semillas Fitó must be healthy, in terms of economic health. We must pay our bills on time, take care of payroll and give some profit back to shareholders who have risked their capital. There is no doubt about it, but our future would be bleak indeed if this were our sole purpose. Who would like to be admired for merely being a healthy person, and nothing more? Fitó has contributed this year to fulfill the mission for which it was created— but perhaps we are not sufficiently aware of that fact. We could look only at financial data to gauge our success, but that would be like checking if a person has a fever to know if they have managed to do what they set out to do. We therefore want to share with you all the projects that, thanks to all of us, Semillas Fitó has managed to carry out during this past year 2017.

MESSAGE FROM THE SHAREHOLDERS Our aim is not to be the world's largest seed company. It would be vanity to just focus on turnover. What we’re after is profitability, i.e., health. This profitability is based on releasing varieties that meet the needs of our customers. To do this, we need a professional team that allows managing the stocks and financial needs of this century-old family business. Antonio Fitó Jaume Fitó

Tomato at eart

MONTEROSA The Monterosa tomato results from the need to recover our traditional tomatoes—with the traditional flavour and an attractive but less-than-perfect appearance. This new variety is unmatched and is here to stay. Its asymmetrical, flattened and very ribbed shape gives it a delicate and peculiar aspect. Its pink colour at maturity and intense herbaceous aroma make it simply irresistible. Juicy and tasty, the Monterosa tomato is the perfect combination of flavour, texture, shape and colour.

ESSENTIA Essentia is a cherry tomato born to conquer the hearts of those who try it. It is a practical and appetising tomato. Its original heart shape, rigid and crisp body and excellent flavour make it the tastiest, healthiest treat.

WITH OUR SHAREHOLDERS DECLINE OF BEAN COSTS A new colour-based bean selection machine has been acquired which has allowed us to increase our production from 7,000 kg to 10,000 kg per shift. This in turn has driven costs down and boosted the quality of selection thanks to the fact that seeds can be inspected on both sides, they can be differentiated by shape and the process is repeatable.
