KO DISTILLING
Lifelong friends Bill Karlson and John 0' Mara are the "K" and the "0" in KO Distilling. They met as classmates and cadet midshipmen at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), and have been friends ever since. After graduation Bill and John went their separate ways but followed similar paths. Both initially sailed in the merchant marine, and served in the United States Navy Reserve. Later both had successful careers in the defense contracting industry. Upon retiring early, the question became, "what next?" Neither one satisfied with sitting idle, in 2013 Bill and John set off on a journey to create craft spirits with local ingredients, high quality production methods, and to share their passion with their local community.

GIFTS FOR CHILDREN CARRYING ON PROJECT When Kit Jenkins' husband came home from deployment, he had a back injury that made it difficult to hold their baby daughter, so he strapped his baby into a carrier and found that it worked wonders. He wore the carrier until his second daughter was born two years later. When he was deployed again, his wife Kit found that she was able to manage raising a toddler and a newborn at the same time all on her own, thanks again to this simple piece of cloth. With several other military families in her neighborhood, the D.C. mom realized they might be going through the same thing, too. She asked her friend Rachel to come on board and together they started The Carrying On Project, which gives away carriers to military families in need.

KOTA LONG BOARDS
Mike Maloney is a former US Navy Pilot who wanted to create a business based off of something that was special to him. In 2012 he started KOTA Longboards in his garage with the hope that if he made the perfect product, longboarding would become a popular mainstream sport. However, it wasn't just the sport that inspired him. There is meaning behind the business's name KOTA stands for Knights of the Air, which was a term coined in France during the 1900s.
