Seneca Nation Poised For Growth

In 2002, the Seneca Nation signed a Gaming Compact with the State of New York, under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. That historic compact required the Nation and the State to cooperate in the establishment of three “class III gaming” casino facilities, which included all of the offerings typical of Las Vegas-style casinos. We have built a billion-dollar gaming business in Western New York, with our Seneca Niagara, Seneca Allegany and the newly expanded $130 million Seneca Buffalo Creek casinos. In the process, we have created thousands of jobs for Senecas and non-Senecas alike, and have become an important business partner for many local companies, thereby supporting numerous additional jobs in the WNY economy. To date, almost $1 billion in exclusivity funding has been paid to New York to support economic development of Niagara Falls, Buffalo and Salamanca. As our gaming operations expand, the state and host cities can expect to continue receiving this critically-needed revenue. But our efforts to grow a strong sovereign economy aren’t limited to gaming. A diversified economic base not only benefits our Nation but also that of our municipal neighbors. Seneca Holdings was established in 2009 as a start-up concept with zero revenue. With six operating subsidiaries in diversified industries such as telecommunications, construction and others, it generated over $134 million of revenue in fiscal year 2012 and employs more than 75 people. The Seneca Nation Center for Business Growth provides novice and seasoned entrepreneurs with an all-encompassing education. The training and support, knowledge and skills, and professional contacts embedded in the program have resulted in an increased likelihood of viability and profitability for incubator participants. With its comprehensive program and services for inexperienced and experienced businesspeople, the Business Center is likely to produce increased economic self-sufficiency options as well as increased income for people of the Seneca community. In order to keep our economic momentum on track, the Nation has established the Seneca Commission for Economic Development to ensure the advancement of our economic sovereignty, identify targeted industry sectors that can best leverage the Nation’s sovereign advantages and establish a formal mechanism to develop and execute a long-term economic development agenda and implementation plan for the Nation both on and off our territories. Seneca Buffalo creek caSino: Downtown’s newest Destination for Gaming Has arrived It’s finally here. The new Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino celebrated its official grand opening on August 27, 2013, to rave reviews. Amidst the backdrop of a spectacular fireworks display along the downtown skyline, officials with the Seneca Nation of Indians and Seneca Gaming Corporation looked on with pride as the $130 million gaming facility became the latest attraction in the rapidly developing Cobblestone District along the Inner Harbor. “In developing this world-class property, the Seneca Nation set out to transform an old industrial site, a shade of Buffalo’s past, into a key piece of the city’s future,” said Seneca Nation President Barry E. Snyder, Sr. “Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino will forever stand out as a testament to Buffalo’s rebirth and a permanent reminder of the important role which the Seneca Nation and its people play in the future of Western New York.” Earlier in August, Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino initiated a transition process into the new gaming space as construction crews continued to put the finishing touches on 808 new slot machines, 18 table games, two restaurants, a sports bar, a four-level parking ramp with 725 spaces and surface parking for nearly another 400 cars. The 67,000 square-foot facility replaced a temporary structure that had stood since 2007 and had expanded in 2008 and 2010 – offering 457 slot machines and a snack bar at its peak. Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino has regularly attracted more than 800,000 visitors a year – a number that is expected to increase to well past 3 million annually for years to come. “Building on the legacy we have created at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel and Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel, Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino will add unmistakable energy and excitement to the Inner Harbor area,” said Kevin W. Seneca, chairman of the Seneca Gaming Corporation Board of Directors. “This world-class entertainment venue will be a key component for visitors to enjoy in downtown Buffalo.”

Hnedak Bobo Group, a nationally-recognized leader in casino design, served as the principal architect for the facility, and construction was managed by Seneca Construction Management Corporation. Construction lasted approximately 13 months, with work completed almost two months ahead of schedule, and the project produced a total of 600 construction period jobs, including 300 direct construction jobs and additional jobs related to the production of materials and other services related to the development. Now that Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino is open, there are approximately 500 direct jobs for its operations, with almost 45 percent of those positions filled by Buffalo residents. Both inside and nearby the new facility, there are many visible signs of the casino’s partnerships with the Buffalo community. One of the most prominent is Buffalo Savors Grill, a 102-seat restaurant that includes some of the region’s favorite foods. Just some of the many items on the menu include: chicken wings from Duff’s Famous Wings; beef-on-weck from Charlie the Butcher; Italian sandwiches with family-recipe sauces from Ilio DiPaolo’s; pizza from Franco’s Pizza; desserts and pastries from Chrusciki Bakery, and; gelato from Sweet Melody’s. Steps away from Buffalo Savors Grill is BC Café, a smaller 24hour eatery featuring locally-made soups, salads, sandwiches, desserts, baked goods, local coffee from McCullagh Coffee and a small retail area. Stixx Sports Bar serves as a central gathering spot with signature cocktails and hometown beers on tap, and features hockey and lacrosse sticks – representing two of the sports which professional teams play nearby – as part of the architecture.

As referenced in an August 28, 2013 story in Buffalo Business First, the casino was packed on the official opening night, and guests were impressed. Betsy Tirado, a resident of Blasdell, N.Y., noted a huge difference between the former temporary facility and the new building. “It’s nicer,” she said. “This feels like a casino to me.” Dawn Gredzicki from Cheektowaga, N.Y., echoed Tirado’s sentiments. “I love the glitz,” she said. “This is a great addition for Buffalo.” Jennifer Caruso, general manager for the new property, said the opening marked the start of Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino as a full-fledged neighbor for downtown. “This is the true Seneca experience brought to downtown Buffalo,” she said. “While the building is new, guests will enjoy the same exceptional service, friendly faces, and tremendous fun they’ve come to expect from the Seneca brand.”

Buffalo SavorS Grill: A Taste of Buffalo Comes to the Downtown Casino

The City of Buffalo and Western New York are known for many things, but especially good food. Buffalo is the birthplace of the chicken wing, which is now famous worldwide. Beef-on-weck, which features thinly sliced roast beef with au jus on a salted kummelweck roll, is another regional staple. Unique desserts pay tribute to ethnic heritage, particularly the area’s large Polish-American population. Now all these great tastes and more are under one roof at Buffalo Savors Grill, the one-of-a-kind restaurant at the new Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino. Buffalo Savors Grill fits the community approach of the casino; which is, to complement downtown Buffalo’s many great offerings. Great food is a common denominator in Buffalo and Western New York, and Buffalo Savors Grill will be a place with exceptional quality and service that locals and people new to the area will enjoy. These foods are what our guests want, and the vendors we’ve partnered with do it the best.” For Ania Gurnari, president of Chrusciki Bakery, being part of Buffalo Savors Grill brings new business and a tremendous sense of pride. “With so many great bakeries in Buffalo, we were very excited to be recognized by Seneca Casinos as one of the ‘area’s best’ and ultimately chosen to partner with them to provide our top quality baked goods to their guests,” she said. “I’m extremely proud to have our name displayed with these staple Buffalo eateries, also chosen to represent the area’s best.” 14

Gurnari’s company is just one of many homegrown success stories that is reflective of Western New York’s hard-work ethic. In 1984, her parents traveled from Poland to Buffalo with $100 and two suitcases, in hopes of building a better life for Ania and her sister. They took a calculated risk to take over a bakery in 1987 and specialize in providing authentic Polish pastries, breads, and desserts. Today, Chrusciki Bakery is one of the region’s most well-known bakeries. Cotter – the oldest active fireboat in the world and a National Historic Landmark – is one of more than a dozen projects and causes funded by a $1 million grant through the Seneca Nation of Indians and Seneca Gaming Corporation to beautify the community surrounding Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino.

Million-Dollar FunD BeautiFies BuFFalo The opening of Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino provides a new entertainment option for downtown Buffalo – but it’s also a game-changer for the surrounding neighborhood. Through a $1 million grant directed by the Seneca Nation of Indians and funded by Seneca Gaming Corporation, more than a dozen businesses, community agencies, and citywide causes have much-needed cash to beautify the land surrounding Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino. Since 2012, areas in the Waterfront, Perry Choice, and Old First Ward neighborhoods have seen much needed improvements in residential and commercial properties, cultural museums, landscaping, and more. “We have a vested interest in the success of the community in which we operate our business,” said Elizabeth Cartlidge, vice president of business operations and strategy, Seneca Gaming Corporation. “We want to be a catalyst for change and work alongside the other Buffalo developers to make an immediate improvement in a section of Buffalo that needs development.”

Cartlidge said there was an overwhelming response from the community after the announcement in 2011 about the $1 million grant program. Seneca Gaming Corporation selected projects that would enhance the public realm and would be beneficial for residents, businesses, and visitors in the community. The grant’s Advisory Board particularly selected projects that not only were needed in the area but also could be completed within a short period of time. Due to the success of the fund, officials are already investigating future similar initiatives. “This was a game-changer,” said Laura Kelly, director of the Old First Ward Community Association, which was one of the fund’s recipients. “The funds dramatically improved the curb appeal for 18 homeowners and five properties surrounding the casino. I think there are a lot of people who are keen on developing properties, but not everyone reaches out to the surrounding community and embraces it – which is just what the Senecas did.” Todd Pohlman, owner of J.H. Dodman Company, a regional meat supplier at 116 Michigan Avenue, said the restoration of his business provided a morale boost among employees. “We’ve been here for 50 years, but people are now stopping by and asking if we’re a new business,” he said. “I applaud the Senecas for doing what they did. They’re committed to improving the community.”

The Food Is Our Medicine Project is a community-based approach which seeks to restore the health and well-being of the native community by reinstituting Native food systems, Native models of organizing, Native land management, and sustainable food production practices. Each of these activities is accompanied by a rich, traditional, ecological knowledge base found in stories, songs, and ceremonial practices which we also seek to restore. In sum, the project organizers with the Seneca Nation of Indians aim to restore native bodily health, increase biodiversity within the Nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food supply, and protect the biological diversity of the Nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lands using a traditional ecological knowledge base. In mainstream society, knowledge is transferred in a university or college setting with tuition fees typically covered by student loans or scholarships in order to issue a degree. Traditionally, Elders were the knowledge holders who possessed knowledge accumulated throughout their lifetime and that of elders before them. Often, spaces to learn included the circle. The circle promoted egalitarianism and active participation in the sharing of information between people. These two concepts have helped to shape the creation of the Elders Circle. The Elders Circle is designed to act as a space for traditional knowledge to be transferred from knowledge holders to apprentices regarding Native plant uses (i.e., edibles, dyes, medicines, ceremonial significance, building materials, hunting materials, and tool materials). Topics covered have included maple sugaring, wild onions, Native violets, wild strawberries, blueberries, and Indigenous basketry. In mainstream society, agricultural practice is something a corporation does in a distant land by unseen people. The Youth Committee and the Community Garden Committee were created to promote community well-being by creating spaces to share, learn, and 28

practice in edible Native gardens together through cooperation. It has established 15 raised beds in a Hiawatha Wampum Belt pattern and has planted a half-acre of white corn. The Hiawatha Wampum Belt is significant as it is an ancient symbol representing community solidarity and cooperation. These raised beds act as a demonstration garden so that Seneca families can learn how to grow their own food in their homes. In mainstream society, very few consumers actually meet the farmers who produce the food they feed to their children in their homes. The purpose of the Farmers Market is to act as a space where the Seneca people can have greater access to local, organic, healthy food options from the farmers themselves. The Farmers Market has achieved 13 vendors and is held in close proximity to the William Seneca Administration building and other community buildings. In mainstream society, the extension of the shelf-life of food products usually occurs at the expense of nutrition. At the Cattaraugus Community Center, there is a renewed interest in canning food for consumption later. The purpose of the safe food preservation project is to promote healthy food consumption through an experiential hands-on learning process. The Seneca Nation sponsored the 3rd Annual “Community Can” event. Seventy-five volunteers produced 1,033 canned quarts of 63 bushels of delicious “Freestone Peaches,” which were given to community volunteers who helped in the process. Freestones are a canning favorite, as they tend to be larger and the flesh does not stick to the pits like other peach varieties. You will be hearing more about the Project as the planners continue to develop innovative ways that the Seneca people can reconnect with the land and produce healthy food in the community. 29

Lost anD FounD: $ 20,000 (not a typo) The Housekeeping and Security Departments at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel regularly retrieve all sorts of items inadvertently left behind by guests. Electronic devices, jewelry, eyeglasses, and even dentures are among some of the items found daily. But earlier this year, team members stumbled upon a find that made everyone do a double-take. As housekeeping attendant Michelle Armstrong tidied the hotel rooms on the 16th floor, she inspected a locked safe from a checked-out room and discovered a wallet, passport, and three stuffed envelopes. Inside the envelopes was cash – lots of it. In fact, altogether, Michelle found $19,300 in U.S. dollars and $3,890 in Chinese yen.

“When I saw that money, I felt shocked and my eyes got so large,” she said. “I was shaking and nervous for whoever had lost it, imagining how so much cash could be left behind.” As it turned out, the items belonged to two Chinese citizens who had just spent the weekend at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel as part of a group. They didn’t realize the missing items until arriving at the airport to take a flight back to China. Kiki Wu, a casino host and a team member with the Asian Marketing Department, remembers getting a call from the guests later that day. “I found the story hard to believe at first,” she said, “but then I saw the money with the Security Department. I told the guests that we had recovered their items, and they said they felt very lucky.”

The officers had counted each bill, and every dollar was accounted for. Through the help of Chinese-to-English translation from Kiki, the guests expressed their overwhelming gratitude and invited all involved to stay with them if they ever visited China. For her professionalism in finding and reporting the missing items, executives with Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel presented Michelle with a certificate and a $150 resort credit. GaminG Floor renovations Continue at seneCa niaGara Casino & Hotel

onstruction crews at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel are continuing work throughout 2013 and early 2014 to completely transform the main gaming floor into a brighter, livelier, easier-to-navigate, and even more inviting place for fun. The $26 million project will take place in a virtually seamless fashion, with hundreds of guests’ favorite slot machines relocated to the mezzanine balcony while sections of the floor undergo renovation. One of the biggest upgrades will be something that guests will not necessarily see but will definitely notice. Nearly $6 million will be invested toward completely updating the existing HVAC systems as well as adding new air handling units and ductwork to greatly improve the air quality within the casino. The new air supply units, roof-mounted exhaust system, and ceiling-mounted ductwork distribution will bring abundant outside air into the casino. Another major investment will be the creation of an entirely new feature bar and live entertainment stage in the southwest corner. The area will be furnished with a dance floor, lounge seats, a circular bar with 20 tabletop video gaming units, and a whopping 40-by-20 feet high-definition jumbo video wall that rivals those at professional sports venues. In the casino, guests will see a different layout and an entirely new interior design. New carpet, with a dramatic design and rich colors of deep red and gold, will fill the entire area. Thousands of slot machines will have new bases and luxurious chairs. Along the central gaming floor path

from the hotel to the 4th Street entrance, crews will install up to 12 monumental tree-like structures. The perimeter of the room will also change. The west entrance will be widened to create an open and more welcoming experience. A brand-new Promotions Booth will be created in the southeast corner of the gaming floor and will include more stations for improved interaction and fewer lines. The bar at the entrance to the recently renovated Thunder Falls Buffet will expand – creating a spacious Keno Bar. Four new high-tech data closets will be tucked away at each of the room’s corners, providing the ability to integrate new gaming technologies in future years. Construction will also take place outdoors, as crews will work into 2014 on a separate $2.9 million project to provide a garden makeover to Seneca Square, the land between the casino and 3rd Street. The pedestrian bridge will look especially different, as beautiful gardens and landscaping – carrying the Seneca theme – will be added along with benches and informational signage that will make the space a prime picture-taking destination.

Heritage Month What started out as a single day of recognition for the significant contributions made by native peoples to not only the establishment, but also the growth of the United States, has developed into an entire month of distinguished respect and appreciation. First recognized through joint resolution by Congress in 1990, approved by George H. W. Bush, Native American Heritage Month became a landmark bill, honoring the legacy as well as the role of Native Americans in this country’s foundation. Similar proclamations had been issued each year since 1994 under variants on the name, including “Native American Heritage Month” and “Native American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.” According to the Bureau of Indian Affairs within the U.S. Department of the Interior, “American Indian Day” was established by Seneca Indian, Dr. Arthur C. Parker, who was the director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester, NY. He had convinced the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a day for the “First Americans,” which they had adopted for three years. By 1915, not only had the Congress of the American Indian Association formally approved a plan concerning “American Indian Day” - with its president, Rev. Sherman Coolidge issuing a proclamation, declaring the second Saturday of each May as American Indian Day - but a year before it was issued, Red Fox James, a Blackfoot Indian had ridden horseback through state to state, seeking approval for this day of honor and reverence.

On December 14, 1915, he delivered the endorsements of 24 state governments at the White House; however, there is no record of the national day being proclaimed. The first American Indian Day was declared on the second Saturday in May 1916 by the governor of New York. Several other states have designated a day of recognition, including Columbus Day; however, there is currently no official American Indian Day as a national legal holiday. Though there is no official day, during the month of November we explore and celebrate the rich culture and traditions of America’s many tribes by observing the music, crafts, dance, and ways and concepts of life through Native American Heritage Month. Throughout November, we take the time to learn more about the history and heritage of Native American peoples through events, programs, ceremonies, and other valuable and rewarding experiences. Accordingly, for 2013, the Seneca Nation of Indians is planning many activities and events throughout the month to commemorate the culture and contributions of the aboriginal peoples of America. The Prowess of Powless:

Casino Host Joins sports Hall of fame

There is an all-star among the casino hosts at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel – not only just for outstanding guest service, but also for sports. Barry Powless, a 10-year team member, will be inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame this October for his lifetime achievements in lacrosse. Growing up in the Onondaga Nation, it was custom to learn the fundamentals of lacrosse at an early age. Barry’s father and grandfather, part of a long line of lacrosse players in the family, gave him a lacrosse stick at age 3. By age 13, Barry played his first senior men’s game alongside his father and even scored a goal. There was no looking back from that point on. Barry continued to amaze spectators and teammates as his lacrosse career continued. Soon after moving to British Columbia and joining the North Shore Indians team, he won three Canadian Championships. In 1990, he played with the Iroquois Nationals, a Native team that traveled to Australia to participate in the World Field Lacrosse Championship Tournament.

After many years out west, Barry decided to move home and was offered the opportunity to coach at LaFayette High School, his alma mater. At the same time, he continued to play professional lacrosse and was a part of the 1992 Buffalo Bandits team that won a World Championship in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League (MILL). People quickly became just as enamored with Barry’s coaching skills, and he was asked to become the inaugural coach for the Rochester Knighthawks of the MILL in 1995. By 1997, the team won the finals, and Barry became the first Native coach to win a world professional championship. Even with all these accomplishments, Barry continued to play organized lacrosse – and regularly remain a top scorer – until age 50. Barry’s lacrosse skills translated into superior people skills at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. “Lacrosse helped me learn at an early age what it meant to be a team player,” he said, “and it’s that sense of family at Seneca Niagara that keeps our guests coming back. It takes a team effort to create a truly welcoming experience again and again.”

When Barry received the phone call about his induction into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame, he felt extremely humbled. “I am so grateful for the gift to play the game,” he said. “In the Onondaga Nation, lacrosse represents a gift given by the Creator, and it is a spiritual and healing game. Accepting this award represents a reflection not only of myself but also of my family and the Onondaga Nation – and for that, I feel truly honored.”

Two great offerings – Seneca Casinos and fantasy sports – are now one for the 2013 football season. From September 2 through December 29, guests can head to any of the three Seneca Casino locations in Western New York to play in the $ 175,000 All-Star Fantasy Football Challenge.

To play, guests must enter one of 10 player choices for each of eight positions: quarterback, running back #1, running back #2, wide receiver #1, wide receiver #2, tight end, kicker and defense. For any or all of the positions, guests also can select a “quick pick” option for a random player. Points are earned based on a variety of factors, such as touchdowns and yardage gained. The top weekly and ongoing cumulative scores will be posted at approximately 4 PM each Tuesday on the kiosks and the Seneca Casinos Facebook page.

Playing is free, easy, and fun. At each of the three Seneca Casinos throughout Western New York, interactive kiosks will be available in the lobbies and other select areas on property. Using a free Seneca Player’s Club card, guests can play once a day at each casino starting on Mondays at noon through Sundays at 11 AM for the Sunday and Monday football games the following week.

The History of Bushy Run: 250th Anniversary

On May 8, 1763, the war axe fell suddenly and without mercy on Fort Detroit. Great Lakes warriors, led by a hitherto unknown named Pontiac, once again began their conquest of British posts on the Great Lakes. Pontiac had struck the first blow of what was to become nothing short of a Native American war for independence. Eight forts were destroyed within two months. Countless settlements were wiped out as the summer of ’63 progressed. Pontiac’s war swept ever closer to Pittsburgh. By June of the summer, Fort Pitt was completely cut off. Colonel Henry Bouquet was given the job of saving Fort Pitt with the help of refugee frontier families as well as a military garrison of 125. Bouquet assembled his forces in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Elements of the 77th and 42nd Highland Regiments and a few of Bouquet’s own Royal American Regiment combined to make up a new army of nearly 500. On July 18, Bouquet began his march west, and his horses were loaded with provisions. By August 5, Bouquet and his troops had marched to the western slope of the Chestnut Ridge. Anticipating an ambush, he diverted their course to the south branch of the Forbes road. This decision would take his column to an obscure little post called Bushy Run Station. Although there was merely a mile between them, the advance guard was attacked by Indians firing from the high ground in front of the column. The Battle of Bushy Run had begun.

Despite two companies of the 42nd joining the guard, more Indians were appearing every moment, hemming in Bouquet and his army on three sides. Casualties on the British side mounted – and falling back, soldiers found cover behind crude enclosures of flour bags. The fighting only ceased with the loss of daylight. Although the Indians were running low on ammunition, they felt confident that victory was near. While Bouquet conferred with his officers, war leaders from the Delaware, Shawnee, Mingo, Macican, Miami, and Ottawa forces discussed the situation. On the morning of August 6, the Indians open fired on the exposed Highlanders, while Bouquet’s army struggled to hold its ground. With the Indians advancing, the taste of victory on their lips, Bouquet sprung a trap: he had softened his front line to feign retreat while the two relieved companies, led by Major Campbell, circled around and attacked from the wood line. The Indians were unprepared for this assault from the right flank, and in a short time, the Battle of Bushy Run was over. Though this battle crushed any hope the Native Americans had of winning their war of independence, the fight was not over. Other opportunities would arise: future leaders like Little Turtle and Tecumseh would take up the fight for their people.

Seneca Nation Welcomes Fall with Festival Celebrations

Each year during the second weekend in September, the Seneca Nation of Indians (SNI) hosts an exciting and enriching fun-filled weekend of events, sharing the richness and diversity of their culture. This year’s weekend from September 13 through 15 will be filled with dance competitions, a native art show, cultural arts and revitalization demonstrations, a parade, sporting events, and Native American food and craft vendors. The SNI, one of the original Five Nations that makes up the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois Confederacy, is known as “The Keeper of the Western Door,” a nation that once occupied territory throughout the Finger Lakes and Genesee Valley. The Seneca worked with the land, relying on agriculture for food by cultivating corn, beans, and squash (referred to as the “Three Sisters”), in addition to hunting and fishing. Currently, there are approximately more than 8,000 Senecas that continue to celebrate their heritage through language, song, art, dance, and sports, while providing cultural, educational, and economic opportunities along with governmental services. The nation also boasts three casinos, a radio station, and many other business ventures. For this year’s festivities, there are some added events that showcase the Seneca way of life and how it is constantly evolving. The Food Is Our Medicine Project is hosting a Healthy Food Cooking Challenge, a 5K Run/ Walk, and the Seneca Nation Farmer’s Market. Other events include the Bart Mohawk Memorial Motorcycle Show, Youth Fishing Derby, Baby Contest, Donkey Bingo at the American Legion, Mud Bog Contest, live music, and free carnival rides for youth. Dream Catchers Dream catchers are one of the most fascinating traditions of Native Americans. The traditional dream catcher was intended to protect the sleeping individual from negative dreams while letting positive dreams through. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the center of the dream catcher and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams would get caught up in the web and expire when the first rays of the sun struck them. The dream catcher has been a part of Native American culture for generations. One element of Native American dream catcher relates to the tradition of the hoop. Some Native Americans of North America held the hoop in the highest esteem, because it symbolized strength and unity. Many symbols started around the hoop, and one of these symbols is the dream catcher. Native Americans believe that the night air is filled with dreams both good and bad. The dream catcher, when hung over or near a bed, will swing freely in the air and catch dreams as they flow by. The good dreams know how to pass through the dream catcher: they slip through the outer holes and slide down the soft feathers so gently that the sleeper often does not know that he or she is dreaming. The bad dreams do not know the way through the dream catcher and get tangled, later perishing with the first light of the new day. 62

The dream catcher consists of a hoop of willow decorated with findings, bits, and pieces of everyday life such as feathers, arrow heads, and beads. It is believed to have the power to catch all of a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dreams, trapping the bad ones and letting only the good dreams pass through.

Learning to play Caribbean Stud Poker is almost as easy as relaxing at a resort on a tropical island in the Atlantic Ocean. If you know how ordinary poker hands work, you’re ready to play. Although multiple players can sit as a table, each player’s hand and wagers are solely against the dealer’s hand. Cards are only dealt; there are never any discards or draws.

After the cards are thoroughly shuffled and cut, each player may place an original wager in the betting space marked Ante. Players also have the option of making a Progressive Jackpot Bet by depositing a token into the appropriate coin-drop located on the layout. Starting with the player seated to the dealer’s extreme left, five cards are dealt face-down to each betting position in a clockwise manner, including the dealer. The dealer then turns up one card of his or her hand. After reviewing his or her five-card hand, each player has the option to “fold” or play. Players deciding to fold return their cards to the dealer, who shall collect their Ante wagers. Players deciding to play must place a wager equal to exactly twice the amount of their Ante wager in the space marked “Bet.” After all the players have made their decisions, the dealer turns his or her remaining four cards up. If the dealer’s hand does not contain Ace-King or higher card value, the dealer pays all Ante wagers even money and returns all Bet wagers to the players. If the Dealer’s hand contains an Ace and a King or higher card count, the dealer compares his or her hand with each player’s hand individually, starting with the player on the dealer’s extreme right and proceeding around the table in a counterclockwise direction. If the dealer’s hand is higher than the player’s hand, the player’s Ante and Bet wagers are collected by the dealer, along with the player’s cards.

If the player’s hand is higher than the dealer’s hand, the player’s Ante wager is paid at even money and the player’s Bet wager is paid up to a maximum payout of $5,000 per hand, according to the odds chart as follows:
