The gift of time

ONCORE

Central Services By Isabelle Meunier, Better at Home Coordinator

Oncore Central Services (OCS) enhances the wellbeing of seniors through innovative programs, housing, advocacy and support. We lobby for solutions to assist seniors with aging at home in safe, appropriate housing and are dedicated to supporting seniors with issues such as safety, health and finances. The phenomenal success of our organization is a reflection of the everincreasing dedication and enthusiasm our volunteers display on a continual basis — offering their time and

commitment to our mandate. Presently, the organization offers a wide range of community-based services to assist older adults to live independently and with dignity. These services include: housekeeping, grocery shopping, light yard work, transportation to medical appointments, minor home repairs and a variety of selected programs. Many people are familiar with our Snow Angels program. Volunteers from countless Kamloops neighbourhoods assist seniors with snow removal for the duration of the winter. We also offer income tax services, social events and an opportunity for seniors to engage with technology through our Better with Technology program. Finally we have our Better with Books and Better with Motion programs available.

Making a run for the finish line Members of the Canadian Masters Athletics Association know all too well the dedication and determination required to be a successful athlete while overcoming ageism By Anton Dixon

Age is only a number and the members of the Canadian Masters Athletics Association (CMAA) are living, running proof. The CMAA is a class of athletics in which veteran athletes compete in events of track and field, road running and cross country. Starting at age 35, athletes are categorized into groups based on their age at the time and compete in each group for a period of five years. Then they move into the next group, one again determined by their age. Masters Athletics caters to athletes of all abilities, and for those who want to compete at an elite level, the World Masters Athletics Championships gives them a chance to go up against world-class veteran athletes. For further information on Masters Athletics and how to join you can visit www. kamloopstrackandfield.ca

Kamloops: The volunteer capital of Canada? City Talk Arjun Singh, City Councillor Canadians are generally generous with their volunteer time. A 2010 study indicated over 13 million Canadians volunteer an average

of 156 hours per year (approximately 21 full days). I think it would be interesting to study volunteer activity in Kamloops because from what I see, the numbers would be even more impressive. One of the huge honours of serving on city council is the number of kind invitations members receive to participate in volunteeroriented events in the

community. There are so many; I think it would take 90 council members, as opposed to the nine we have, to make it to all the events in a year. Recently, Kamloopsians hosted the Canadian Masters Cross Country Ski Championships, the B.C. Special Olympics, the Art Unleashed show, the “maladjusted” theatre presentation on mental health, the Community Innovation

Oncore volunteers make a difference Continued from page 1 In 2014, OCS volunteers provided 5,562 services with an average of 650 hours of volunteer work per month. On behalf of OCS, I would like to personally thank you for your contribution of time to our programs and services. I know how valuable one’s free time is, and I cannot tell you how grateful the entire team and I are to have you as part of our contingent. This organization would not be a success without your help. You make independent living possible for many senior citizens who might otherwise be expected to enter more institutional settings. The entire staff at Oncore appreciates your gift of time, energy and enthusiastic support. We would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you! We look forward to continuing working with you in the future and watching the success of our organization grow with your help.

Easter Giggles Why couldn’t the rabbit fly home for Easter? He didn’t have the hare fare. What is the difference between a crazy bunny and a counterfeit banknote? One is bad money and the other is a mad bunny! What do you get when you pour hot water down a rabbit hole? A Hot Cross bunny. What did Bugs Bunny say to the carrot? It’s been nice gnawing you.

Lab conference and the Chamber of Commerce week, among many others. Every year, city hall celebrates volunteers at the free annual volunteer appreciation barbecue. The barbecue is a potential avenue to meet people who can help you find volunteer

opportunities. If you are volunteering already, we would love to see you there! This year’s barbecue will be held on April 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. just outside the front doors of the Interior Savings Centre. Unfortunately, my work on the Union of B.C.

Municipalities board has me in Victoria that day, but there will be many city council members and staff there to host you. If you are interested in researching volunteer opportunities online, a great starting point is the Volunteer Kamloops website: www. volunteerkamloops.org.

Easter is usually a sign that spring is near. We also see signs of spring looking out our windows. The snow is nearly gone, sprouts of green are shooting up and we are enjoying longer days. it into your home, it has instantly become your responsibility. I am and have always been an animal lover, and I believe since animals do not have a voice, it’s our job to ensure they are well taken care of. With recent hot topics in the media like the 16 emaciated horses that were seized from their owner near Armstrong in December (plus the 100 remaining horses that were seized shortly there after), it’s an important reminder that our “pets” require organized care as well. What I mean by this is the system of care can be basic yet effective, and by doing so we automatically become more in tune with our pets’ needs, and we can calculate when they need attention. In our filing cabinet at home, I have a file folder for each animal we have. In that file I keep all the veterinarian records, inoculation certificates and any other information that I feel is important. This is an easy way to keep everything tidy and in one spot. At certain times, you will

want to know where all of your documentation is. If you needed to book your dog into a kennel and they ask you for proof that your pet has had his shots for kennel cough, would you know where that is? No documentation and your dog will be refused. Keeping a journal

with dates as to when certain things occur can become your best friend. There is no way a person can remember all the important details. Having a short, written record of all updates and incidences, vet visits, medications etc., will save you time and money. As we have a small farm, I

have entries about our dogs, horses and cattle in that journal. I would be lost without it. Another tip is to be sure to keep all your pet supplies in one specific area. Organizing will help save time. See "Pet supplies" page 5

Springtime is almost here. If you’re like many people, the arrival of spring means it’s time to spruce up your home. But why stop there? This year, consider applying some of those same spring cleaning techniques to your investment portfolio. Here are some ideas you may want to put to work: Get rid of clutter: You probably don’t have to look too far around your home to find things that are broken or no longer useful to you. If you poke around your portfolio, you might make similar discoveries — an investment

Give your portfolio a “spring cleaning” that has chronically underperformed, duplicates another investment or met your needs in the past but is less relevant to your current situation and goals. Once you identify these types of investments, you may decide to sell them and use the proceeds to take advantage of opportunities that may prove more valuable to you. Consolidate: Over the years, you may have accumulated multiple versions of common household items — brooms, mops, hammers — which pop up mysteriously in various parts of your home. You might find it more efficient and even less expensive, if you

Pet supplies in one place Continued from page 4 We have four horses ranging from 11 months to 15 years old and I keep certain items together such as: food products, first aid supplies and tack. Each area is separate from the others and I try and keep all areas as clean as possible while using the space effectively. As this article is about pets, I’d like to stand up on my soapbox for a moment. My husband, 10-year-old son, his friend and I attended the Armstrong horse auction. We wanted to show Garrison and Brendan what happens when people cannot or do not look after their animals. We also wanted them to see what a community can do when help is needed. I am in no way judging Gary Roberts. I believe he had the right intentions, only to find that poor health and a growing herd became too much, and unfortunately the horses suffered the consequences. We saw people come from as far away as Saskatchewan to purchase these animals. We ended

up coming home with a mare that had a nasty case of lice, ringworm and was emaciated to the point of having protruding hips, ribs and shoulders. My point is that we consciously brought her into our family knowing that she would need a complex nutrition plan, veterinary care and more importantly love and patience. It has cost us a small fortune, but we believe that she has enriched our lives. Penny has become our responsibility, she is now a part of our family and she has found her forever home. consolidated all these things in one centralized location. As an investor, you also might find that consolidation can offer you some benefits. Do you have one Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) with one financial service provider and a second RRSP with another? Have you scattered investments here, there and everywhere? By consolidating all of these accounts in one place, you can cut down on paperwork, reduce fees and, most importantly, unite your investment dollars so that it’s easier for you to see what you have and then follow a single, coherent investment strategy. Prepare for turbulent weather: As you know, springtime can bring heavy rains, hail, strong winds and other threats to your home. As part of your overall spring cleaning, you may want to check the condition of your roof, clear branches away from your house, clean your gutters and downspouts and take other steps to protect your property from the ravages of Mother Nature. And just as you need to safeguard your home, you’ll want to protect the lifestyles of those who live in

that home — namely, your family. You can help accomplish this by reviewing your life and disability insurance, making sure it’s still sufficient for your needs. Get professional help: You may find that you can’t do all your springcleaning alone. For example, if your carpets and rugs are heavily soiled, you may need to call in a professional cleaner. Or if your tree branches have grown out of control, you might need to bring in a tree trimmer. Similarly, when you decide to “tidy up” your portfolio, you’ll need some assistance from a financial professional — someone who can study your current mix of investments and recommend changes, as needed, to help ensure your holdings are suitable for your risk tolerance, time horizon and short and long-term goals. Spring cleaning can reinvigorate your home and your overall outlook. And by tidying up your investment portfolio, you can help gain some of that same optimism — for your future. Physiology and anatomy of the foot Submitted by Luana Opran, LPN To understand how to care for the foot, it is important to know its physiology and anatomy. The foot structure is complex, providing a stable base, locomotion and shock absorption. There are 26 bones within the foot divided into three anatomical sections: the rearfoot, the midfoot and the forefoot. The bones forming the first two sections are called tarsals and the ones forming the forefoot are

divided into metatarsals and phalanges. The foot has 33 joints providing different functions. For example, the ankle joint points the foot up and down. The foot bones are arranged to form two longitudinal arches (medial and lateral) and two transverse arches (posterior and anterior). The medial longitudinal arch is the most identifiable one. It absorbs the shock from walking and it is much higher than the lateral longitudinal one. *References for this article can be found in Nursing Foot Care, by Susan Tremble, 2013. edition.

It is motorcycle (cycle and pedestrian) season Legal Ease By Kerri D. Priddle It is spring, and the familiar sounds of motorcycle engines revving are all around. The automobile driving public need to be more aware of the potential for motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians using the roadways and crosswalks. Motorcycle riders are similar to cyclists and pedestrians — they are more physically vulnerable in a crash as compared to a vehicle driver equipped with an external frame, seatbelts, airbags and bumpers for protection. It is more difficult to estimate the speed and distance of a motorcycle, due their smaller size and narrow frame. They are less visible than a regular vehicle, making it all the

more important for car and truck drivers to be aware. As a motorcycle rider, it is important to be as visible as possible to other motorists. Choose light or bright clothing that comes with ventilation to help prevent overheating. Wear a safety vest or clothing that features reflective striping, making you more visible. A properly fitted full-face helmet provides the best protection in a crash, as well as protection from wind, dust, rain, insects and debris. For a helmet, go with a bright, visible colour. Add reflective tape to the sides and back. New motorcycle helmet and seating requirements for motorcycle riders and passengers came into effect in B.C. on June 1, 2012. According to the law, all motorcycle drivers must have a helmet that meets the safety

standards and displays the proper certification label. Motorcycle passengers must have their feet on the foot pegs or floorboards. As the driver, you’re responsible for ensuring passengers under 16 are properly seated and have a safety helmet properly secured. Anyone who can’t reach the foot pegs is not allowed to ride. As a rider, you can protect yourself and reduce your risk of injury by wearing an approved motorcycle helmet and gear designed specifically for motorcycle use. Modular helmets, which have a chin-bar that flips up, should be closed when the motorcycle is in motion. Never buy a used helmet — it may have been in a crash and any damage may not be obvious. Replace your helmet if you’ve been in a crash, it’s been dropped

Vivace Chorale and the Kamloops Brandenburg Orchestra, under the direction of Cvetozar Vutev, present Joseph Haydn’s oratorio masterpiece, The Creation, sung in English. Written in 1798, this major choral work tells the story of the creation of the world as described in the Book of Genesis and in John Milton’s poem Paradise Lost. There are three soloists, representing angels who narrate and comment on the successive six days of creation.

Majestic choruses, sung by choir, and soloists celebrate particular days of creation. The overture, played by the orchestra alone, depicts in musical tone painting the world of chaos before the creation. Come hear the musical glory of this choral masterpiece at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 18 at the Calvary Community Church. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students and are available through Kamloops Live Box Office or at the door.

If you have been in a motorcycle collision, injuries can be more serious, if not life threatening. It is important to talk with a lawyer experienced in both the law governing motorcycle use as well as personal injury law and insurance law to make sure that your rights are protected. A lawyer can help you to understand the wide range of issues that arise with a motorcycle collision. Reviewing your targets for optimal diabetes management

Health Matters Laura Burgess, B.Sc. Pharm Certified Diabetes Educator

This is the 79th article in a series of articles discussing Type 2 diabetes. With the incidence of diabetes being on the rise in our population, at Manshadi Pharmacy we have taken a great interest in diabetes care and would be happy to answer any questions that you may have regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diabetes and related complications. As I mentioned in my last article, this time of

year is a good time for working towards any goals or resolutions that you may have set for yourself to optimize your health over the coming year. Therefore, this may be a good time to review your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol targets for effective diabetes management. So how often should the target values be monitored? You can monitor fasting and aftermeal blood glucose levels yourself on a daily basis, at a frequency you and your physician determine. Some diabetics find it helpful to test multiple times a day, especially if they are on insulin or at risk of low blood sugar. Others only need to test periodically if they are well controlled on oral medications and with certain lifestyle

modifications. The key behind testing your blood sugar levels is to test when the information it provides will be useful to help guide your diabetes management. For example, testing may help you figure out which foods make your blood sugars high or how to properly manage your blood sugars during exercise. Your hemoglobin A1c should be measured every three months by your physician and your blood pressure should be taken at every visit. Your cholesterol levels should be measured yearly and for some people more often. People with diabetes have a stricter LDL target to reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications including heart attack, stroke and peripheral artery disease.

The importance of care team. Don’t forget groups. Who is more stressed, your adrenal glands or you?

Natural Health Cathy Lidster, B.Sc, GCFP, ACNRT

Do you suffer from fatigue, short-term memory loss and find it difficult to drag yourself out of bed in the morning? Do you have salt and/or sugar cravings, blood sugar highs and lows, allergies or food sensitivities? What about hot flashes, anxiety, mood swings and diminished libido? Do you have a hard time falling

asleep or getting back to sleep when you have woken up in the middle of the night? If you relate to some of these symptoms, you may be experiencing adrenal dysfunction. What does this mean? Your adrenal glands are small pyramid-shaped glands sitting on top of the kidneys. These small but mighty glands

produce hormones essential for health and vitality: adrenaline, cortisol, estrogen and testosterone. These adrenal hormones help to manage all forms of stress — internal and external. Wellfunctioning adrenal glands have a balancing effect on our reactions to stress. For example, cortisol has antiinflammatory and antioxidant effects, which helps minimize swelling and inflammation in things like allergies and autoimmune disorders. With too much prolonged and unrelieved stress, the adrenals can become overly active and eventually “burn out.” See “Healthy adrenals" page 10

Qualifying for a Disability Tax Credit and what to watch out for As many of you know the Disability Tax Credit is a non-refundable credit that may reduce the amount of income tax that either a person with a disability or their supporting person has to pay. To qualify, an individual must have a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions, as defined in the Income Tax

Act and as certified by a qualified practitioner. It was recently brought to my attention by a number of seniors in the riding that a company has been promoting this credit and offering assistance to those interested in applying for it. This company distributes flyers that ask whether you are having difficulty getting

around, and if so, you are entitled to a refund from the government. This company then offers to help people apply for refunds through the Disability Tax Credit for a service fee. This issue was brought to our attention a number of years ago prompting our government to pass legislation restricting

fees that can be charged by a business preparing a Disability Tax Credit application. At that time we heard cases where some Canadians living with a disability had substantial portions of their Disability Tax Credit, sometimes as much as 35 per cent, taken away by promoters of this credit. With the enactment of

Acetaminophen: It’s almost everywhere Pharmacist Reflections Adam Sawula, pharmacist I am always amazed at how many products on pharmacy shelves contain acetaminophen (Tylenol®). I recently counted the number of products containing acetaminophen in the cough and cold and pain relief sections of my pharmacy and the final number I came up with was over 60. Many of these products appear distinctly different, yet are marketed for the same or similar conditions. This concerns me as I feel there is an increased risk of accidental overdoses due to people taking multiple products containing acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is generally safe, assuming there are no drug interactions. Problems with acetaminophen can occur if a person has liver conditions, alcohol abuse issues or uses excessive amounts. The liver is an

extremely durable organ and can usually break down acetaminophen with ease as long as it is working properly and the dose taken is below the maximum recommended. If too much acetaminophen is taken, or if the liver is not functioning properly, it is broken down along a backup pathway. Unfortunately, this backup pathway produces breakdown products that are harmful to the liver. In a person with no current liver issues and no current alcohol consumption, the standard maximum dose for regular release acetaminophen (regular, extra strength and all acetaminophen with codeine products) is up to 1,000 milligrams every four to six hours with a daily maximum of 3,200 milligrams per 24 hours. Up to 4,000 milligrams per day can be used short term on the advice of a health care provider. Extended release acetaminophen (marketed as arthritis, eight hour or “long lasting” formulations) can be dosed as 1,300

milligrams every eight hours with a daily maximum of 3,900 milligrams per 24 hours. You should not combine multiple products containing acetaminophen unless the dosages and/or timing have been confirmed safe by a doctor or pharmacist. Use caution when choosing products, and when in doubt, ask your pharmacist! Ensure you know what is in all of your current medications (or keep a list) and if two or more of them contain acetaminophen, ensure they are safe to take together by asking your doctor or pharmacist. Remember to let your doctor and pharmacist know all of your prescription and nonprescription medications when discussing any medicationrelated questions. How to maintain healthy adrenal glands Continued from page 8

This creates an imbalance of the vital hormones. There is potential for serious damage to all body systems. Immunity drops and it becomes very difficult to heal. What can we do to maintain healthy adrenal glands? First we can consider diet. Add lots of good fats, quality protein and trace minerals to your plate. That means eat lots of butter, coconut oil, avocados, olives,

raw seeds and nuts (not roasted in canola) and other non-trans fats. Every day have plenty of leafy greens and a variety of organic veggies. If you eat meat or fish, choose grass fed or wild if possible. You crave salt when your adrenals are low because they need minerals to rebuild and function. Season with gray sea salt or add a pinch to your drinking water. After adding nutrientdense foods you can then eliminate the non-

nourishing food products that are actually big sources of stress to your adrenal glands, which are trying their best to help you deal with your stress! Remove sugar, caffeine and processed, packaged and inflammatory foods such as pastas, breads, refined grains (flours) and any cow milk products. What else besides diet can we do for adrenal health? Avoid stress, toxins in the environment, toxic thoughts, behaviors,

Book Review By Marilyn Brown

The Last Kind Words Saloon: A Novel

By Larry McMurtry Liveright Publishing Co., 196 pages. Available in bookstores, in ebook format, and throught the TNRD system.

In this short novel the American Old Wild West is in decline: buffalo herds are almost extinct, the Comanche people are hemmed in by reservations and trains and telegraphs are rapidly opening up the West. Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, famous for “cleaning up Dodge” in years past, are themselves increasingly challenged by a world in flux. In the very first page Doc Holliday contemplates, but resists, shooting a hat which is blowing down the dusty main street of Long Grass, Texas. He decides to shoot two crows flying overhead, but misses, then torments the squeamish Wyatt Earp with his chatter about the efficiency of dentistry, needing only pliers and perhaps a chisel. Wyatt is not quite alert after a night in the stables, avoiding his wife Jessie, the bartender in The Last Kind Words Saloon. However, when a distant sound indicates a herd of cattle on its way, they prepare for trouble. Doc is perturbed that Wyatt Earp seems unsure of where his six-shooter is. (Imagery of impotence abounds.) Meanwhile, Lord Ernle, an English aristocrat, partners with a hard-nosed cattleman in order to build the biggest cattle ranch in the world. The locals

are amazed at the luxury and lunacy of the Lord. He entertains the townsfolk and reporters with three train cars full of dignitaries, Scottish pipers, alcohol and vast quantities of delicacies for a feast. The thousand quail eggs served as appetizers prompts Wyatt to say, “I didn’t even know a damn quail could lay an egg.” A frequently occurring theme is the bafflement of a number of the characters over quite mundane issues. The effect is usually comic, and at times the story seems more like a farce than a serious novel. The perils of nature and human brutality contrast with the friendship of Wyatt and Doc, although the key to their friendship is not clear. Sandstorms, ball lightning and stampeding cattle coincide with racism, domestic violence, vigilantism and stupidity. Many hazards make it unlikely for cowboys, dentists or unofficial lawmen to live to old age as events in the novel build to the climax of the shoot out at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. The shoot out at the O.K Corral results in death and injury, while adding to the legend of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Larry McMurty chooses to tell the legend, not the history, in language so plain, so truncated, the reader may be left feeling deprived of keen insight into the characters. Larry McMurtry is a prolific writer, with such well-known successes as Lonesome Dove, The Last Picture Show and the screenplay for Brokeback Mountain (co-authored with Diana Ossana), for which he won an Oscar. He lives in Texas.

Blazers visit fans at Kamloops Seniors Village By Kieran Markle Blazer fever and hometown pride is alive and well at Kamloops Seniors Village. On Feb. 24, three of our local Blazers visited residents at Kamloops Seniors Village in Aberdeen. Matt Needham, Patrik Maier and Ryan Rehill played cribbage and posed for photographs with some of the residents on a bright Tuesday morning. Betty Ruddock, Helen Bryant and Helen McRobbie beat all three players at crib. The Blazers visit to Kamloops Seniors Village has been an annual event for the past eight years, thanks to Colin Frederick, an avid fan and resident at the village. Frederick,

a season ticket holder, attends as many games as possible with his mother, Doreen. Bonnie Johnson, marketing manager at Kamloops Seniors Village, is thrilled by Frederick’s enthusiasm. “Not only does Colin go to all the games, but he [tries] to get somebody to cheer for the Blazers or go to a game with him,” Johnson said. “It’s great.” Frederick had the three Blazers sign his jersey and pose for some photographs with him during their visit. “He looks forward to this every year,” said his mother. The visit was a great success, with plenty of laughter shared between the residents and the athletes.

Classic cars roll through town for the 45th annual Easter Parade By Becky Mann

Spring 2015 is a time for egg hunts, April showers and the 45th annual Kamloops Vintage Car Club (KVCC) Easter Parade.

“The Easter Parade is our coming out event for the year,” said Dick Parkes, one of the club’s parade organizers. After stowing their vehicles away for the winter, members of the

HELP WANTED

KVCC are ready to get back on the road in style. The Easter parade will run on April 5 (Easter Sunday), with members of the KVCC and community driving through some of the streets of Kamloops. The parade starts with a pancake breakfast, running from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Westsyde

Shopping Centre. Everyone is welcome to indulge for $5 a plate — cash only. The proceeds will be used for parade expenses. From there, the convoy of over 100 vintage cars will travel from Westsyde to downtown Kamloops (starting at approximately 1 p.m), and will finish on the

grass at Riverside Park, next to the band shell around 2 p.m. Here the vehicles will park, giving the public an opportunity for viewing. KVCC, is a non-profit founded in 1972. The Kamloops Chapter is one of 24 throughout B.C. The vehicles in the vintage car club are 25 year old or older.

“Our club is open to anybody interested in old cars,” said Parkes. Aside from the Easter parade, the KVCC participates in Hot Nite in the City and cruise nights. They meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month (except July and December) at the Hal Rogers Centre, 2025 Summit Dr.

Kamloops Courthouse Gallery celebrates seniors’ talents

We offer low-cost room and board, home-cooked meals and caring staff. Additional amenities include activities, media room, hair salon, activity and exercise room, library/computer room, laundry rooms, TV, cable, phone & internet. This is a non-smoking building.

Just because you are a senior, doesn’t mean you have to retire. In fact, research points out that four of the secrets to a long and happy life are continuing to be involved in your community (social connections), doing work that you feel is meaningful and helps others (volunteer or paid), keeping the brain active and being thankful for what you have. Pat Hall, a long time member of the Kamloops Courthouse Gallery, does all of these things. Hall will be the featured artist for the months of April and May with her exhibit, “Art for the Garden,” displaying what she calls “wild, formal, quirky, quaint, functional and decorative works for the garden and outdoor rooms.” Hall is particularly excited about this project because she has always enjoyed quiet moments in her garden, and now, due to some health issues and mobility problems, she is unable to plant her garden this year. But, as usual, Hall doesn’t look at the glass being half-empty and instead creatively responds by choosing to add interest to her garden with decorative art works in clay. The exhibit will include small and large garden sculptures, some with an aged finish, some stained, flower

pots, funky bird houses and feeders, garden vignette plaques, seed bottles, mugs for gardeners, garden goddess planters for walls and “eco” plates, bowls and mugs. Hall feels strongly about protecting our environment and often uses local clay in her functional works and glazes. The exhibit will also feature the work of Jan Seedhouse —adding woven scarves and shawls and wearable garden art. The Kamloops Courthouse Gallery has been operating in Kamloops since 2007 in the Old Kamloops Courthouse Arts and Cultural Building (a wonderful historic building that used to function as the real Kamloops Courthouse). It is a non-profit co-op gallery and gift shop located at First Avenue and Seymour Street downtown, with wheelchair access and free on-site parking available. The space offers a venue for member artists to sell their work while offering the community an opportunity to experience different forms of local visual and functional art. This co-op of 13 dedicated painters, potters, sculptors, fabric artists, photographers and glass artists look forward to celebrating Pat Hall and her “Art for the Garden” exhibit.

Home Maintenance Tips Lyle Killough, Homewell Services Co. I like trees. They can add beauty and elegance to a property, and they are good for the environment. I wanted to get that clear at the start because there’s something I don’t like about trees. I don’t like what they can do to a house if the wrong tree is planted in the wrong place. If a tree is too close to a house, its roots, branches and needles or leaves can all do damage. Roots buckle foundations, sidewalks, driveways and stairs. They find their way into cracks in concrete and widen them. Roots seek water and are drawn to the foundation’s perimeter drainage and clog it, preventing proper drainage. Branches rub against house exteriors and damage siding, stucco, trim and paint.

Page 17

! n o i t a c Lo ! n o i t a c Lo ! n o i t a Loc Precautions to take with trees and houses Branches rubbing against windows are likely to damage screens and make really scary noises on windy nights. Branches hitting under the eaves can make short work of the soffits where the tree caused damage can let wasps, squirrels, bats, rats, raccoons and birds into your attic. The tree itself makes a handy ladder for the climbing pests to get in. Houses aren’t safe from tree damage from above either. Rubbing branches very quickly destroys roofing materials. If you have branches touching or near your roof, have them removed immediately! Needles or leaves and other tree debris that falls from overhanging branches fill gutters and plug

downspouts, and debris on a roof will hold moisture and accelerate the ageing of roofing materials. When choosing a tree for your yard, do some research. Understand how tall and wide the tree will grow and plant it where it will not interfere with your house, your neighbour’s house and any other concerns like overhead wires, driveways, sidewalks and drains. If you plant the right tree in the right place you will spend less time and money on the maintenance and repair of your home, and do less pruning too. I plan to plant two trees in my yard this spring, away from the house and about a hammock’s length apart.

I pulled my hood up against stinging rain and dragged my suitcase up a steep hill cobbled with stones, trying to find the convent Instituto Suore Francescane Angeline where I was to stay for a week. A kind woman seeing my distress took me in her car to the grilled front gate of the convent where she brushed off my expression of gratitude, as if kindness was normal and not noteworthy. The Lord’s Prayer: Our daily bread (Part 4) introductory lesson on prayer is, “Give us today our daily bread.” If you prayed this petition and then sat back and waited for a roasted chicken to fall into your lap, you’d certainly go hungry because prayer and work go hand in hand. I mean you’re never going to plough a field by turning it over in your mind. Well, it’s the same thing with prayer. It’s true that the living seed comes from God, but it is equally true that we need to cultivate that seed. You have to put

Spiritual Thought Rev. David Schumacher Jesus said to His disciples, “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.’” The next line in Jesus’

effort into it. You have to put something of yourself into the prayers you pray and the work or ministry God gives you. God didn’t just give you a derriere to sit on. He gave you legs to walk where He wants you to walk, hands to do what He wants to accomplish through you and a voice to speak what He wants you to say. You can’t just sit there like a spectator in the stands. God wants you in the game, on the playing field, in the huddle, on the line of scrimmage. Prayer, like faith, without

some effort on your part isn’t going to amount to much! The problem of our world is not that there is not enough to go around. There is enough and to spare. The problem is not the supply of life’s essentials; it’s the distribution of them. This petition teaches us not to be selfish in our prayers. About the only two things a child will share willingly are communicable diseases and his mother’s age. We’re called to share much more than that.

This petition is God’s call to give to others who are less fortunate than we are. Only then will we begin to realize how much God has blessed us with and that revelation, in and of itself, is the

beginning of godly wisdom. From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.

Two: Thank you to the Salvation Army for your generous food hamper and the angels that donated and packed it. It was very humbling to receive when fridge and freezer were empty. I quickly froze, dried

and preserved things so that I can ration them out to last till spring — made juices to freeze, saved the pulp for soups or muffins. The eggs were just wonderful. I used them to make four batches of pancakes to freeze for later. I had one poached egg one week and a oneegg omelet the next — a real treat. I am eternally grateful for your hamper. May God bless you and keep you all well.

Increase your fitness, take up golf Submitted by Mike Moore

As seniors, we are often reminded of the health benefits of walking — increased strength and stamina along with low impact — being kind to our joints. Golf has all the benefits of walking and more. There are different aspects of fitness. Strength and stamina are important, to be sure, but so are flexibility and co-ordination. The golf swing involves a flexing of the body core as one takes the club back then swinging forward

through the ball. Golf professionals sometimes refer to this as coiling and uncoiling the body. Co-ordination is getting all the muscles and body parts moving in sync. There are two other benefits to golf: mental focus and camaraderie. We are encouraged to do crosswords and other puzzles to keep our minds sharp. Golf is a game where focus is essential; each shot is a puzzle, choosing a club to hit the ball a certain height to carry a certain distance. Then you focus to execute the plan.

Golf is best enjoyed with friends; conversation and lighthearted banter keeps us connected socially. Every golf club has at least one foursome of seniors whose combined ages total 320 years. Golf promotes healthy living and yet there are objections to taking up the game. Here are a few of the more common objections: “I’m a real klutz, I can’t walk and chew gum at the same time.” Many golf courses have professional golf coaches See "Par" page 25

More than bunnies are hopping in Zone 8 Submitted by Linda Haas

The time has come to commit to the fun and excitement of the 55+ BC Games in (mostly) North Vancouver, Aug. 25 to 29, 2015. Final Zone 8 registration deadline is June 11, with registration forms, membership and zone registration fees needed by playoff dates. It is important to let the sport event co-ordinator know if you intend to take part in a playoff, since some playoffs are only required if there are more people registering than spaces allowed. You may try out for more than one event, but you may only participate in one event at the Games.

The chart below lists known playoff dates. Golf playoffs, if needed will take place towards the end of May. Ladies, contact Inky Whalley, at 250-679-8723 or biwhalley@cablelan. net. Men, please contact Monty Kilborn at 250832-2815 or mklefty22@ gmail.com and let either representative know you are interested. We have a new pickleball co-ordinator, Ross Perkins, who may be contacted at 250-3181275 or rossperkin328@ yahoo.ca. Ron Telford has done an excellent job, but has other things to tend to right now. Thanks for your past efforts Ron! Help us help seniors; we

invite folks of all ages to our fundraising lunch at noon on April 16 at the ABC Country Restaurant, 1835 Rogers Pl. Tickets are $12 and will be available from members or contact Linda at 250-679-3557 or lindahaas@xplornet. com to reserve tickets. Besides a lunch buffet, there will be a shared pot draw, bucket auction and a candy guess. It’s a fun event that lets you spring from Easter into summer while supporting Zone 8 athletes who want to stay active. The next meeting is April 16, 10 a.m. at the Chief Louis Centre, Tk’emlups Indian Band, on Shuswap Road. Keep active and stay healthy.

Overcoming obstacles Continued from page 1

MIRIAM CAVANI, 54 Category: 50-54 High jump (PB: 1.32) Long jump (PB: 4.11) What was it that inspired you to join the Masters program? “I saw an article in the paper about the World Masters Athletic Championships coming to Kamloops. I ignored the fact it was ‘World’ and just thought, ‘Oh nice,’ they have track and field for old people. Also I used to do athletics in elementary and high school so I decided to go try it and see if I could still do it and that was six years ago.” What are some of the challenges you face being an older athlete? “The coaches at the time were telling us to listen to our bodies whilst training in order to avoid injury, so that was a key lesson I learnt at the start.” “As an older athlete we come to practice with so much on our plate, with

Margaret Rhebergen, 59

DERM STRONG, 67 families to take care of, issues taking place outside the track, so trying to eliminate those things from my head is difficult sometimes. So I would say mind space is a challenge and I have a greater appreciation for elite athletes and how focused they have to be in order to be successful.” What has been your highlight as a Masters athlete? “Probably the two meets when I achieved my personal bests. Also competing in the World Masters Championships, its always awe inspiring to see people who are my age that are jumping so much further, I don’t know their background, they could be former Olympians but what’s encouraging is that they are very receptive to people who are not at their level, no egos. The comradery from all the athletes across the nations just blows me away.”

Category 65-69 400 metres (PB: 1:18.42) 200 metres (PB: 33.40) 60 metres (PB: 9.62) What was it that inspired you to join the Masters program? “Six years ago I was at the track located at the TCC helping another coach to run a mini track meet and we got talking. He mentioned that the Masters were meeting the next day and told me to come on out. I’ve now been here for six years and I love it!” What are the biggest challenges you face as an older athlete? “Probably keeping my weight down, for sure. I always try and get it down, but of course, those buns always look good so you end taking one [laughs].” “Another challenge is staying away from injuries. I’ve been pretty lucky so far but doing hurdles is where I have suffered my two injuries. I fell on my

left side and broke my finger, and in June, I tore my rotator cuff. But I can’t wait to get back to the hurdles; it’s definitely a mental and physical challenge.” What is one of your personal goals this year? “When I look at the Masters Athletics website, there are only two other guys in Canada that compete in the 300 metre hurdles in my age category. I want to meet them and go head to head that’s my goal.” What do you enjoy about being a part of Kamloops Track and Field Club? “Over the years the coaches have been helpful, the facilities here are also top notch. Also being able to rub shoulders with the elite athletes that train here, they are all so nice!”

Category 55-59 High jump (PB: 1.34) Long jump (PB: 4.26) What was it that inspired you to join the Masters program? “I got involved in 2009 when I found out that the World Masters Track and Field Championships were going to be in Kamloops, and I knew I needed some more exercise at the time. Also way back in high school I did track and field and really enjoyed it so thought I’d give it a try again.” How has the Masters program impacted your life? “It actually helped me physically, mentally and socially. Physically obviously I’m in better shape and doing that hard exercise three times a week helps me mentally. I actually struggled with depression for a long time, probably 20 years and I was taking anti-depressant

medication. After a few months of doing the track and field I was able to come off of them...” Can you describe what your first session was like? “The group was fairly large at that time. I was apprehensive for sure as I didn’t know much about all these different exercises, but the group was really good and had a lot of patience, and the coaches also had a lot of patience too. I was so out of shape at first and it was really tiring to actually go through those sessions. Even though it was so tiring, and boy I slept well those nights, [laughs] I noticed my body was starting to feel better and the improvement was great.”
