“60 Minutes” has come calling, the latest in a line of suitors courting displaced space workers who have huddled together to weather the void created by the end of the shuttle program and the cancellation of the Constellation program. the space Coast technical network meets each Friday morning at 8 a.m. at st. gabriel’s episcopal Church in titusville for a $4 catered breakfast. networking and information give members further reason to get out of bed and hit the bricks to either find a new job, take training to
bring their skills up to date for today’s job market or one day bring a new product or service to market as an entrepreneur. the CBs news program flew into Brevard Jan. 20 to film a segment on what the idling of the u.s. space program means locally, and to the country and world. the 17-minute piece will be aired in February. stn was featured on CBs news on Monday, Jan. 30, the day before the Florida primaries. the national exposure is vital, according to one stn member. “that’s where we get the money to do this work on the space Coast,
from all the other people in the country in the form of their taxes. i think it’s important to these people and they’d want it to continue,” gerry pless, an environmental specialist at kennedy space Center who was laid off a year ago, told Aaron weisz, producer for “60 Minutes.” At the meeting, the group voted to form a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation and voted in the minimum three board members required to submit an application to the internal revenue service.

we hit 2012 running and spent most of the past month making preparations for some awesome events for you. toward the end of January, we brought the first great American outdoor Adventure Day to the Viera Holiday inn and i must say how surprised i was at how very popular our own John trieste is with our readers. we squeezed more and more walk-ins into his presentations and still have a long waiting list for future presentations. John gave an hour-long talk, with a slide show, about some of his favorite educational and inexpensive day trips that are suitable for the entire family. At the end of the presentation, two lucky winners went home with tickets to the ray stevens show at the king Center. i hope you will join us this month for our annual Boomer senior guide expo and the launch of the 2012 directory to clubs, organizations, support groups and volunteer opportunities. we’re going to host our Blast from the past at the Valiant Air Command warbird Museum in titusville and it’s a destination event you don’t want to miss. we’re giving away free root beer floats and vendors will be there with freebies, too. our grand giveaway for the day is a pair of tickets to fly in a fully restored bi-plane. see if you can still fit in your military uniform or dust off your old oxfords and poodle skirts for our costume & uniform contest. Many of our models will be there, too. the typical $15 admission charge has been waived for this one day event and you don’t even have to worry about parking. we have arranged to have several golf carts on hand to take you to and from your cars. if you live in the south of Brevard, call our office to book a seat on the charter bus leaving from palm Bay and Melbourne, but make plans to join us on Friday, Feb. 10 in titusville. it’s the first place you can pick up what i am sure will become a keepsake issue. this year marks the 6th annual Boomer Senior Guide and i think you will agree that we have come a long, long way from our first soft edition. this year is the 5th anniversary of our sister publication, Viera Voice, but i am most proud to announce that in just three months, we will celebrate the 15th anniversary of Senior Life. thank you for your continued support and for always letting us know what you want to read.

Happy Anniversary to Senior Life!
This month marks the 11th anniversary of Senior Life and just like any 11-year-old; we know we have not fully reached our potential, despite how much we’ve grown and how much we’ve learned. We have changed over the past 11 years and we know we couldn’t have done it without your support and encouragement. You’ve probably noticed we have some new names in our family of writers and photographers, but we still have many of the names you’ve come to recognize and trust. Lucy Kline has been a favorite columnist with Senior Life for many years and Mary Brotherton has been writing features almost as long. Martha Masiello has also been with us several years. More importantly are you, our readers. Some of you have been reading Senior Life since the very first issue, 11 years ago. Since that time, you’ve seen how the paper has developed and grown. You’ve watched us sponsor wonderful events and stand firm in our commitment to the community. Each month you have shown support of the paper and helped guide us with your comments and suggestions. More importantly, almost every day, someone calls or emails us to let us know how much Senior Life means to them. We like to know that we are providing a service that is not only helpful, but one that you appreciate. That’s the best anniversary gift you could ever give us.

Johnny Mathis revives memories By martha masieLLo
in the early 1960s, young ladies gathered as many friends as they could and drove hours just to see the top 10 vocalist, Johnny Mathis. Following the screaming and applause, they often found a local guest-house and crashed there for the night, often sleeping on the floor because it was too late and too far
to drive home. But, they said they had to do it, they had to make this pilgrimage, because this was Johnny Mathis. As his appearances and concerts expanded, his fan base grew. often local fan club members corresponded via typewriter to press staff to determine Mathis’ next performance. on saturday, Jan. 7 his fans were given the opportunity to see him

i love February. it means another birthday is behind me and now i can look forward to four other very special birthdays. My mother, my husband and two grandchildren celebrate their birthdays this month. it’s also the month i celebrate another year as the editor of Senior Life with the chance to bring more great stories to you. working as the editor has given me the honor of working with many professionals who bring interesting articles about local people and newsworthy events to life each month. Columnists and journalists alike seem to always find interesting topics and many are skilled photographers, too. when i started as the editor, i didn’t realize how fast the publisher would grow her business and i didn’t know how many exciting events she would bring to our area. if we aren’t hosting an event in a given month, we are either preparing for one or we are contributing sponsors at someone else’s. Last month, Senior Life brought the phenomenally-received Day trip presentation by John trieste and assisted in providing the popular on stage Alaska show. previously, the paper sponsored the sleuths Mystery Dinner show, tech know expo and assisted with Viera Voice events such as the scarecrow stroll. this month, on Feb. 10, we’ll all be at the Valiant Air Command warbird Museum in titusville, launching the 2012 Boomer Senior Guide. this is one event you will want to attend, in uniform, if you can. it’s free with many prizes and events throughout the day. Decades of volunteer work recognized with a Jefferson Award By Linda s. humphery
Merritt island resident Marilyn galli worked for decades in a career as a librarian at the Brookhaven national Laboratory, a Department of energy facility on Long island, new York. And, she will tell you that while that was very fulfilling, some of the most rewarding times of her life came when she was volunteering her time, receiving no remuneration. what she did receive for her service in the Brevard County Criminal Justice services (BCJs) was a Jefferson Award, presented to her by the Board of County Commissioners. the Jefferson Awards are a prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public service in America. the awards are presented on two levels: national and local. they began in 1972 to create a nobel prize for public service. today, their primary purpose is to serve as a “Call to Action for Volunteers” in local communities. galli answered her call to service by logging in thousands of hours in BCJs, assisting those reporting directly from court and those leaving
incarceration. she served from 1997 until 2010, working one or two days a week in the Cocoa office. “when men or women are released from a court appearance or from serving time in jail, they need someone to explain to them what is required of them,” galli said. “things like how to pay fines and about being on probation, how to report and how to serve in the community.” galli said her love for volunteering began when she was 18. she has volunteered for the American Heart Association, the Cancer Association, local hospitals and churches. galli said she was very honored to be nominated for the Jefferson Award by a supervisor in the department and felt appreciated when she accepted her award at the county commission meeting. “Volunteers are usually treated very well and i have a need to be with people. i have hobbies like stained glass and playing bridge. i have loved playing tennis and quilting and i even ran marathon races until i was in my 70s,” she said. “i’ve taken some time off from volunteering because of a health issue, but now am considering what i will be doing next.” SL

Funny thing is… By sammy haddad
we are all warned not to drink and drive, don’t text and drive, and i would now like to add “Don’t text and jive,” jive being the modern slang for talking. this may be more dangerous than the first two combined. well, think about the last time you were having a deep or meaningful conversation with someone and they suddenly grabbed their phone, looked at it, and then became semi comatose to your very existence. You continue talking as if nothing has is changed but instead of the intelligent, meaningful conversation you were having seconds earlier, it has become more like a brilliant philosopher talking to a caveman with brain damage. You’re now getting responses like “huh,” “uh…wha…” and “ugh.” what happened? it’s called texting while jiving. How a person’s iQ can drop instantly from Scottsmoor genius to caveman is truly a phenomeMims non nobody is concerned about except
me. it’s not hard to tell when this is happening. it usually starts with a beep, then what looks like either chair dancing or what a person might do if a bee suddenly flew down their clothes. next comes a small metal object being stared at with the blank stare of an amnesia victim and that is quickly followed by the brain damaged cave man babbling. if aliens wanted to take over our planet, all they would have to do is text all of us first and we would be powerless to stop them. Consider the implications on a worldwide scale. if we wanted a vote to go our way in the united nations, all we would have to do is text the dissenting nations and call for the vote. wars could be won by texting the enemy’s front line and then moving in. who needs nuclear weapons when we all have cell phones? so to save humanity on a global scale or possibly just to keep your friends from leaving you in the middle of a conversation, my advice is, “Don’t text and jive.” Dr. sammy SL

McKee Botanical Garden in Vero Beach Just a short drive from Brevard is one of the most diversified botanical gardens on the treasure Coast. these attractive gardens have been around for more than 80 years. the park was started back in 1929, and at that time, was called the Mckee Jungle gardens. today, with a name change, the Mckee Botanical gardens have more than 18 acres of sub-tropical lush jungle hammock and is located on route us1 in Vero Beach. the gardens are filled with plants appropriate for horticultural growing in our area. native vegetation has been augmented with ornamental plants and seeds from around the world. the original designers also set about assembling one of the most outstanding collections of water lilies and orchids. the gardens are a wonderful destination for children of all ages. they will be introduced to jungle foliage, a bamboo pavilion, palm grove, banyan tree, waterfall, butterflies, birds, dragonflies and much more. You will definitely enjoy walking beside the streams and ponds and the people-friendly winding trails. the gardens also feature a number of very interesting buildings, including a fine gift shop, an education center and a very accommodating restaurant. if you are interested in a guided tour of the gardens you should call ahead at 772-794-0601, ext 113. the gardens are open tuesday through saturday,

Love of enemy is shown with prayers, thoughts and acts of forgiveness. people who have been injured and who forgive remove the burden of desired vengeance and the need to get even. Forgiveness is a powerful act of love and a great aid to becoming strong. Volunteer service, so popular with seniors, is an expression of love for others who are most often strangers. You say, “i love you” when you serve food to the homeless at Daily Bread, assist with a citizens patrol, help at senior centers, deliver for Meals on wheels, or work in hospital as an aide. Love energy from the passion, affection, devotion, fondness and sacrifices of love contributes to a long life. As one studies and learns about what contributes to longevity, we start with the love of god. people who love their Creator with their whole heart, mind, soul and body express their devotion in positive ways interacting with others. After love of god, the Bible and other blessed guide books stress the importance of love of self. if you find you are ok, so also, others are ok. then the other great commandment reads; “Love your neighbor as yourself.” getting along with those around us — where we live, where we work, where we play and where we worship — encourages peace and reduces conflict. Love of spouse begins with the attraction and romantic love with special care, attention and devotion. ideally, it leads to the birth of children, followed with the love of children and the growth of strong family relationships. the fourth commandment of the ten reads; “Honor your father and mother (parents) and you will have a long life.” the blueprint for love and a long life are well expressed and chronicled. going beyond the spiritual and human interactions of love, there is the love of life. it has its twists and turns, ups and downs, smooth passages and

remember when before tV we listened to programs on radio? remember when, commercials on tV occurred at the half-way point on half-hour programs, plus at the beginning and at the end? remember when, hour programming had commercials at the 15 minute points, total of five commercials from beginning to end? now try to remember when radio programs had commercials as part of the comedy of the program verbalized by a cast member. if that last one rings a bell in your memory you can remember the george Burns and gracie Allen show on radio or perhaps the Jack Benny radio show. today we have to put up with so many different commercials on hourlong programs that it seems there is a commercial about every 10 minutes, interrupting the flow of the story, each commercial for a different product. the half-hour commercial break actually takes a full five minutes or more. the others are a little shorter but that gives us an hour-long program with 38 minutes of story once it finally starts, to the point of the last commercial starting. the time allotted to commercials from beginning to end of the hour adds up to 22 minutes. the difference of commercials in the past was brought to my memory recently when i received a gift of six audio tapes 12 sides that enabled me to listen to a dozen of the old half-
hour programs of Burns & Allen. over the years they changed sponsors and the tapes are a Lucy mixture of the comKline mercials for Maxwell House Coffee, “good to the last drop,” as told by Bill goodwin on most of the programs and “swan, the floating soap,” when sponsors changed. But the story line didn’t stop for a commercial. rather, the cast member doing this was part of the story and cast. He went into talking about the product during the story line as he told all about the product to another member or guest of that evening’s program. occasionally there were other announcers who did the product pitch that they tied into the story line. ed goodwin and toby reid are two names i hear when i listen to the tapes. the big difference from this method about sponsors is that the pitch flowed right into the story line and wasn’t a commercial that interrupted the story to which we were listening. today, the screen changes, the story stops and the sound often blasts louder than in the old days. the only advantage to today’s method i can see is that i use commercial time to hit the mute button, get up to do other things and not waste time watching or listening to commercials. Comments always welcome — asklucy3@juno.com. SL

Jim Buffington receives the Senior Life Caregiver of the Year for 2012 By mary brotherton
Jim Buffington retired from the navy as a pilot and director of logistics. He planned to travel with his wife, ilse, but when she was diagnosed at age 55 with Young onset Alzheimer’s, the couple had to make other plans. some experts suggest that Alzheimer’s can progress at different rates, with many younger onset patients remaining engaged and enthusiastic for years after the diagnosis. Having found the care and support he wanted for his wife while visiting his sister, Buffington now calls Melbourne his home. He said, “the outstanding support i receive at the center is the sole reason i relocated from pennsylvania to this area. the Center for Family Caregivers continues to provide my wife and me with the support and knowledge to face our challenging 11 year Alzheimer’s journey with dignity, compassion and understanding.” He said that he also wanted to be near Dr. rosemary Laird at the Health First Aging institute. Joyce kennedy, manager at the Center for Family Caregivers said, “selecting a caregiver of the year is not easy because we know all caregivers have unique life challenges and overwhelming situations. each day they demonstrate personal sacrifice, amazing courage and super-human strength.” the second annual senior Life Caregiver of the Year Award was presented to Buffington on tuesday, Jan. 21. kennedy said, “Jim quickly became a mentor to all caregivers on the same journey, showing them how to enjoy those special moments in time with their loved ones that become the rewards of caregiving. taking care of a loved one with advanced symptoms of this disease requires 24/7 care, yet on any given day, in addition to taking such good care of ilse, Jim finds the time to offer help and support to all caregivers on this difficult journey. For this reason, and for creating such a unique sense of family at our center, he was our unanimous choice for the 2012 senior Life Caregiver of the Year Award. the Center for Family Caregivers is located at 3661 Babcock st. in Melbourne. security issues have become more frequent recently. Condominium and homeowner associations are spending more time and money addressing the problem than in years past. the reasons i am hearing are becoming more varied. A sampling of examples includes vandalism, break-ins, drugs, trespassing and graffiti. the solution to your association’s security problems may depend on the specifics of your community. Here are examples of general measures. surveillance cameras are probably the most common resolution. the state-of-the-art system has developed to a point that they are very sophisticated and reasonably priced. the association i manage has cameras with night vision, zooming, and panning capabilities. we have also installed what we call a license plate camera to record vehicles as they exit our facilities. we have placed several multi-language signs notifying perpetrators the surveillance system is active. the money saved by the reduction in vandalism pays for the system. insurance companies advise against dummy cameras, as they may create a false sense of safety. roving patrols are a method of security which may come in several varieties. Associations can enlist off-duty law enforcement personnel to periodically tour the community. their visibility is an effective tool to deter crime. some law enforcement agencies will strategically park unmanned patrol cars within your association that will also provide that noticeable deterrence. Many communities also offer Community observer patrol service. these usually have marked patrol cars with two-way radios, which are used by volunteers from your communicate with week, butassociation the Palm to Bay Old Bastards law enforcement. real life rosie the riveter
senior Life Photo by Linda Wagner
Loretta Meruer earned the 2011 RSVP Volunteer Award for making hats and blankets for veterans and newborns. By mary brotherton
Loretta Meurer was a real-life rosie the riveter on Long island, during world war ii, according to her daughter georgianne. these days, she knits and crochets hats for wounded warriors and blankets for newborns. she stays busy at sunflower House in the Merritt square Mall with the knitting club, three days as week and exercises just as often there. she also attends senior Care of Brevard, a cognitive therapy center for adults. Linda wagner, of senior Care of Brevard, said, “Loretta is a lovely lady and is so gentle
and sweet. Last year, she won the rsVp volunteer award for her work with Cape Canaveral and the veterans.” Maxine robb works at senior Care of Brevard and also thinks highly of Meurer. “she calls me Mom,” robb said. georgiane said, “the best move we ever made was when we came from orlando to Brevard County. there’s so much for her to do. she got involved six months after we moved and stays busy.” For more information, call senior Care of Brevard at 321-631-9014. owls to put on a show at west Melbourne Library
senior Life George White
Florida Wildlife Hospital and Sanctuary director Sue Small with Owliver. By george white
everybody knows what an owl is but there are very few who understand how special they are or have seen one up close. “Florida owls!” will be held at 6 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. wednesday, Feb. 29 at the west Melbourne public Library, 2755 wingate Blvd. the non-profit Florida wildlife Hospital and sanctuary, 4560 n. us1, in palm shores, has many programs in the series called our wildlife Legacy (owL), but this one really has to do with owls, said director sue small. “we’ve given it several times and people seem to
enjoy it because they get a chance to see them up close. these are species they would never get a chance to see in the wild because they are nocturnal,” she said. the program will explain their ability to hunt using a keen sense of hearing and special feathers, she said. “Hunting is done by sound so they have to have feathers that don’t make noise when they fly so they can sneak up on their prey,” small said. the structure of their eyes and neck also are different than other birds, allowing them to see long distances under very low lighting, she said. “they have big eyes that can
see just fine in the daytime but very well in the dark. if humans had the same size eye proportionately they would be the size of grapefruits,” she said. the highlight of the show will be a visit by the sanctuary’s stars, the great Horned owl, owliver, and the tiny, gonzo, an easter screech owl. “we’re able to bring them out because we have a special permit. they are educational ambassadors,” she said. For more information about the seminar, call 321-952-4508. For more information about the Florida wildlife Hospital, call 321-254-8843 or visit floridawildlifehospital.org. SL

grandparents ROCK !
Children with AiDs benefit from family’s fundraising efforts Dear Gramma
By Linda s. humphrey

Dear Gramma: our 18-month-old son gary has a compromised immune system but is permitted to be out with us. sometimes, when he’s in his stroller, we have difficulty with people, including senior citizens, touching gary without asking permission. gary smiles and we’re happy others enjoy him. Considering his health problems, how can we discourage people from touching him? —Concerned Dear Concerned: there is nothing cuter than a baby or toddler and people want to reach out and touch them. i’m sure it’s difficult having to repeatedly tell people not to touch. My suggestion is to hang an easily-read sign from the front of the stroller stating, “please don’t touch our baby. He has medical issues. thank you for understanding.” You may want to consider draping a see-through veil around the baby, too. Be vigilant to politely stop those who reach for him anyway. Senior Life Brace for the Year of the Dragon By angeLa smith
when it comes to celebrating the Chinese new Year, heading to the Fifth Avenue Art gallery in Melbourne may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But organizers of the new art exhibit, Year of the Dragon, are hoping art lovers will do just that. “we’re always looking for new ideas that will spark interest not only for our guests, but for our artists. this topic gave us all opportunities to express ourselves even though we all do different types of work, said renee Decator, gallery director. “the Year of the Dragon will be an exhibit of new discoveries and new beginnings. the dragon is a part of the Chinese new Year — a celebration of change. A Chinese proverb states that all creations are reborn on new Year’s Day. out with the old and in with the new is an intricate part of the tradition. Although the annual observance falls on a different date each year, based on a combination of lunar and solar movements, it usually occurs in January or February. it is then when a creature in the 12-cycle lineup is featured. its presence is a must in all tales of fantasy and science fiction. this year began Jan. 23 and is ruled by the fabulous beast that is the most powerful sign in the Chinese zodiac: the dragon. the dragon, known for its powerful and majestic spirit, is never cautious or afraid when faced with a challenge. it will defend and protect any cause close to its heart, as it is confident and strong. paying tribute, the Year of the Dragon exhibit opened Feb. 1 and will feature over three dozen works by 15 gallery artists, from watercolor, acrylics and mixed media to photography.

The Fifth Avenue Art Gallery will host the Year of the Dragon exhibit beginning Feb.1. The Dragon is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar, and the only animal that is legendary. This will be a member show with invited guests and lots of surprises, and artists are of course creative with their intrepretations. Above artwork is entitled: Traditional Tea. “in Brevard County, there is a fairly large population of Asians and couples who have adopted Asian children,â€? said Jini James, exhibit participant. “i had the pleasure of celebrating the Chinese new Year with some of them several years back and was inspired by their music, dance and costumes. our paintings will be an expression of the joy in celebration and the symbols of Chinese culture.â€? Jan Hello there! My name is Jan. I am a female domestic shorthair cat. I was born in June of 2008. I came to the SPCA along with my litter of kittens. It took the sta here a long time to get us healthy, but they did it! I am a very sweet, social girl and I love to get out of my cage whenever I get the chance. I would like a new home with a family who deserves a great girl like me. Please come in soon and see if you can give a sweet girl a chance. Love, Jan

SALUTE
Coast guard was ticket to world exploration By maria sonnenberg
seemingly inconsequential actions can often become life-changing, as retired Coast guard Captain william riedel discovered early on in life. riedel, who grew up in the washington, D.C., area, was never afraid of hard work, perhaps because his mother was a teacher who know how to put her son through his paces. “she actually taught me in seventh grade,” riedel said. “talk about having to work hard.” in the early 1930s, riedel knew the naval Academy would be demanding, but very much wanted to be a naval cadet, as did a many of his teenage friends. to prepare themselves for the naval careers, the group took the entrance exams for the u.s. Coast guard Academy, just as a warm-up exercise. “it was competitive, but it didn’t require an appointment,” riedel said. “i didn’t know anything about the Coast guard.” riedel did well in the entrance exam, liked what he saw and heard about the Coast guard and decided to enroll, the first step in what was to be a long and distinguished career. “i’ve been over almost all the world with the Coast guard,” he said. He was also part of the Coast guard’s wall of gallantry in 2007, but we’re getting ahead of the story. Before his graduation in 1939, riedel’s
training included two cruises to europe, a taste of what lay ahead. “we went to germany and France, and i got the impression the germans were hard at work while the French were relaxing,” riedel said. “turns out the germans were getting ready for war.” one of his first assignments was transporting troops along the coast of new guinea, a game of cat-and-mouse with the Japanese. “we made a number of invasions in new guinea and the philippines with general McArthur,” riedel said. “the intelligence was excellent along the coast, so we would skip from one place to the other, bypassing the Japanese to send troops ashore ahead of them.” His courage and ability to keep his men safe by cleverly circumventing the enemy won him a Bronze star with a combat “V” for valor. His duties as division commander for 12 ships in new guinea were demanding, but that was a piece of cake for a man who survived having his mother as his seventh grade teacher. After world war ii, riedel earned his civil engineering degree from rensselear polytechnic institute, a degree that helped him land jobs at Coast guard district offices in new orleans, Honolulu, washington and Cleveland. while stationed in Cleveland in the early 1950s, he was responsible for the design and construction of the st. Lawrence seaway aids to navigation.
As head of the Coast guard’s engineering division in new orleans, riedel had to contend with the arrival of a nasty lady named Betsy, a.k.a. 1967’s Hurricane Betsy. “the hurricane came right over the district office which was located at the Custom House,” riedel said. By the time he retired from the Coast guard in 1969, riedel was assistant chief of staff for planning, program and budgeting. He retired, but he didn’t leave the Coast guard, working for many years as a senior civil servant who represented his country in delegations to Mexico, russia and iran. riedel eventually senior Life Photo by Joyce Wilden did leave the working William Riedel was part of the Coast Guard’s Wall of life, moving to engle- Gallantr. wood on the west During an irCC dance class, riedel coast of Florida. in 1997, after his first caught the eye of the lady who was to wife died, a classmate who lived at become his new wife. indian river Colony Club invited him “she was looking for a dancing partto take a look at Brevard. ner,” he said. “she didn’t step on my “i bought a place right away and feet, so we got along right away.” SL moved in,” riedel said.

Andrew Loyd stays busy feeding bodies and souls on Jan. 6, Keeping i found Andrew Loyd wearing his the Faith chef’s hat and apron working his Linda S. magic at the grill at Humphrey his titusville restaurant, Loyd Have Mercy. i visited the small eatery at the suggestion of friends who raved about the southern cooking. i was overjoyed at the mouthwatering cabbage, chicken livers and cheese grits. i also learned that on sundays Loyd trades his skillet and spatula for a Bible and a pulpit at Love Covenant word Center, with two locations, titusville and orlando. Loyd said he knew at age 16 that he would someday be an ordained minister. After graduating from Astronaut High school in 1983, he began working for Burger king and developed a love for cooking and serving others. the combination of cooking and preaching appealed to the young man who loved “seeing people happy. Loyd said the suggestion for the catchy name for his restaurant came from his brother in law who loved to eat his fried fish and grits and declare, “Lord have mercy! “Follow your passion and you’ll find your purpose and who you are. said Loyd, whose wife, Mary, and daughter, Janna, work as servers in the restaurant and as church administrator and youth director, respectively. Loyd oversees 10 other churches in Florida and Alabama through the Love Covenant Ministerial Association, which he founded. He has a doctorate from Life Christian university in tampa. in 2000, he authored a book, Understanding the Heart of Faithfulness. on sunday, Jan. 8, he told his small but passionate titusville congregation that “it takes nothing to be average, just do nothing! He challenged his members to not make excuses in the new year, stay focused and find their purpose in life. After experiencing Loyd’s food and sermon, i went away from both, well fed. Loyd Have Mercy is located at 640 s. park Ave., and is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., thursday through saturday. For more information, call 321-269-3383. Love Covenant word Center is located at 2690 s. Hopkins Ave., suite 6. services are at 9 a.m. sundays, and 7 p.m. wednesdays. For information, call 407-438-2222. SL

Computers for education, inc. is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization with a primary focus to supply adults and children with the tools needed to compete and succeed in today’s highly technical society. it began in 2000 as a project in the garage of kennedy space Center employee Fremont “Freebie” Bassett, when he and his son, John, worked together to build a computer for a young student whose family could not afford one. thinking there could be many other students in a similar situation, he embarked on a journey to help others. After sharing his vision with organizers from the Astronaut Memorial Foundation, the nAsA education outreach program, and the Brevard County school Board, eventually businesses throughout Brevard and ksC began donating their dated computer equipment to the group. Currently, the organization has 37 volunteers ranging in age from 18 to 22 who refurbish and test all computers as well as assist with activities at the learning lab. More than 17,000 functioning computers have been provided to schools, students and

adults throughout the united states and internationally by the recycling donations of computer equipment from businesses and individuals. “through educational programs, high school and college student volunteers are provided credit for their time and efforts,” Bassett said. “each hard drive is cleaned with Datagone software, and a 60-day warranty is provided with each computer distributed. ‘guru’ classes are held at our facility to teach those who are interested how to fix their own computers. we are currently seeking monetary grants to employ up to 40 laid-off ksC workers.” the organization has received recognition from keep Brevard Beautiful for helping keep discarded equipment from the landfill. the organization is in need of electronic cabling; power supplies for laptops; memory, and hard-drives; and accepts donations of some ink cartridges. they always welcome volunteers. All tax-deductible donations of equipment are accepted, worked on and stored in rooms at the titusville north Area Adult education Building 10. tuskegee airmen changed our history By martha masieLLo
Born in new York and raised in ohio, the African-American student had achieved his childhood dream. He was about to learn to fly airplanes. the young white Army Air Corps instructor from California received an assignment to instruct a group of new cadets on flying and fighter pilot tactics. together, they would cross the lines of diversity and become a component of history in the making. in the early 1940s, civil rights organizations and the black press exerted pressure that ultimately resulted in the formation of the tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American military aviators in the us Armed Forces. they served during world war ii in the Army Air Corps, all the while being subjected to daily racial discrimination. Lt. Col. Hiram Mann (usAF ret.), 91, flew 48 missions with the 332nd Fighter group, the 302nd and 100th Fighter squadrons during world war ii. He remained in the Air Force for more than 20 years. “i wrote letters to the war Department about getting into a flying training program for my country, and received responses saying there were no provisions for negroes to fly in any branch of the military. the attitude then was that we would never fly...they did not want us to fly. we were fighting to free others from oppression in europe, yet we weren’t free here in the us,” Mann said. Lt. Col. robert Hughes (ret.) was sworn into the Army Air Corps in 1942 and selected for pilot training. in 1944, he was assigned to tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama as an instructor pilot. His lengthy career included service in world war ii, korea and Vietnam and included flying p-51s, B-26s and B-47s. He also instructed Chinese and turkish students at randolph Field in san Antonio, texas. “Most of the tuskegee cadets were from the north and mid-west, because of the educational requirements for their pilot training at that time,” Hughes said. “the war Department didn't think the trainees would be qualified. these guys went through school against all odds and made enormous contributions to the country, and the war effort. this was a huge stepping stone to improving race relations. the more

Book reView Composing a Further Life: the Age of Active Wisdom By Mary Cathrine Bateson reviewed by Chiffon sandberg the author followed in the foot steps of her famous mother, Margaret Mead. Both being cultural anthropologists, Mary Catherine was a professor in Anthropology and english at george Mason university from 1987 to 2002, when she became professor emerita. she is a visiting scholar at the Center on Aging and work/workplace Flexibility at Boston College and, until recently, was president of the institute of intercultural studies in new York City. exploration of later life was through an extensive study and in-depth conversations with eight people who traveled different avenues of life. Among them were a retired Maine boat worker who becomes a silversmith and makes fine jewelry; Dan, a partner in a gay relationship whose career was a music educator and has adapted and re-adapted to life’s circumstances; and Jane Fonda, a film star, author and activist. they illustrate how they have embraced what would have been considered old age a mere 30 years ago and through active wisdom entered into their second adulthood. personAL opinion: i recommend this book for anyone reaching retirement age and beyond. it is very inspiring. new stage of life cycle, Adulthood ii, redefines old age. Composing a Further Life is putting in writing something we have observed and haven't defined. we have energy, wisdom and experience in our retirement years (our second adulthood). But what should we do with it ? it is time for self examination. “who am i and what will i do with the rest of my life? will you improve your artistic ability or be an instructor or even learn something new? it is time to hit a new stride. published by Alfred A. knopf isBn: 978-0-307-26643-9 First edition SL

these days, there are thousands of diet and nutrition apps available for phones and tablets — so many, in fact, that there are even apps to find apps. rather than choosing food and nutrition apps based on the same criteria used to rate Angry Birds, the Academy of nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Assocation) rated the best science-based apps for losing weight, managing diabetes and eating gluten-free. the reviews are at eatright.org. “Americans are increasingly turning to apps to support them in achieving their health goals, especially for new Year's resolutions, says registered Dietitian and Academy of nutrition and Dietetics spokeswoman Marisa Moore. “while the right app can keep you on track to meeting these goals, the wrong app could be filled with misinformation and dangerous fads. Barbershop groups join forces for ‘Circus Day In Dixie’ By george white
there was a time, long before the internet and video games, when the annual visit by the traveling circus was the biggest thing to happen in a small town all year. on Feb. 25, Circus Day in Dixie will recreate that slice of Americana in song in a joint presentation by the greater Canaveral and Melbourne chapters of the Barbershop Harmony societies. taking familiar tunes from all eras, the groups will join with others on stage to bring the excitement of the circus to life, all within the context of four-part barbershop harmony. the event featuring the Harbor City Harmonizers and space Coast Chorus will be held at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Holy trinity episcopal Academy, 5625 Holy trinity Dr., Melbourne. tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. “it’s based on the small towns in the south in the 1920s and the songs will set up the circus coming to town. it was something that everybody in the town would look forward to all year long,’’ said Al Carter, originally from Atlanta. Carter put together the show in 2002 and produced it twice in georgia. “For Act 1, we’ll have a backdrop of storefronts for the circus parade coming through town and we’ll have clowns and a dancing group to help us out. Act 2 will be inside the circus tent with people sitting on risers as if they were watching the circus,’’

Members of the Space Coast Chorus practice barbershop singing for an upcoming performance of Circus Day In Dixie.
Carter said. And one of the sub-plots weaving throughout the play will be a young girl begging her parents to let her run off and join the circus, only to be encouraged not to do so, according to Carter. “it’s really fun to do and it was well-received when it was put on before. i‘m really looking forward to this,’’ he said. “the performance is the first combined show for the greater Canaveral and Melbourne chapters, said Arlan ropp. “For years we’ve both done big annual shows but this is the first time we’ve done a performance like this on stage together.’’ Lovers of four-part barbershop harmony will have an additional treat by short performances by the groups Main street and iQuartet. Main street is the 2011 sunshine District Quarter Champion and iQuartet is the seventh place international Collegiate Quartet finalist. the event is being sponsored in part by the Cocoa Beach regional Chamber of Commerce.
