Ana Nesbitt watched other businesses take part in last year’s Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival and made a solemn vow. Never again would she ignore such an opportunity to bring foot traffic and fun to her storefront. “We saw it last year and saw the overwhelming participation from the community,” said Nesbitt, manager of Visual Dynamics Apple and Mac store at The Avenue Viera. “We wanted to be sure to be a part of it this year.” The Scarecrow Stroll takes place Oct. 1 through 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. across the Viera and Suntree area and beyond, with businesses creating and hosting a scarecrow, and community members coming by to judge for popular vote. A map of sites is provided in this newspaper. Stores will then move the scarecrows to the Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Harvest Field, behind the Church at Viera, 9005. N. Wickham Rd. in Viera, just west of Viera Hospital. All scarecrows will be auctioned off to help the nonprofit Rolling Readers strengthen reading skills of at-risk students. The Mac store crew is creating Mac Crow, and having a bit of fun with the big boss in the process. Jay Wooten, owner of stores in both Viera and Indian Harbour Beach, is a caricature of himself, with a big bushy mustache, big eyes open to half-mast, and bushy eyebrows. It’s his face that will be further caricatured onto an old Mac flat screen, with a motion activated mustache when viewers come to visit. See Crow business, page 4

VIVA FLORIDA 500

Discovery of Florida by Ponce de Leon—500 years later by Darrell Woehler When you look at the official seal of Brevard County, three dates jump out at you: 1513, 1854 and 1969. These are listed, top to bottom, in chronological order. The seal is prominently displayed near the east side entrance to the Government Center in Viera and on most official documents of the county. Perhaps our Brevard County forefathers had a premonition in putting Ponce de Leon on our county seal, because for years, most residents thought the founding of Florida

happened somewhere near St. Augustine. But that was before historian, scholar and sailor Douglas Peck took to the sea from Puerto Rico, and on two separate voyages, guided by sea currents and the best records available, determined that the founding of Florida took place right here in Brevard County, in the vicinity of Melbourne Beach. There is now a State Historical Marker at the site of Juan Ponce de Leon Landing Park, located on the beach on the east side of A1A, just south of the city of Melbourne Beach,

where it is believed Juan Ponce de Leon first landed in Florida in 1513. The other two dates on the Brevard County seal are 1854, which is the date Brevard County was established by an act of the Florida Legislature, and 1969. The 1969 date of course is when Apollo 11, with Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins blasted off from Kennedy Space Center on a historic voyage of their own, to the moon. Brevard County’s April, 2013 500-year anniversary celebration is being planned by United Third Bridge, Inc. and The Florida Puerto Rican Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Inc., and the V Centennial Committee, coordinated by Samuel Lopez. Committee meetings have been taking place

for more than a year, with various sub-committees being very active, planning Brevard County events. A large, bronze statue of Ponce de Leon is being constructed by Rafael Picon, a local artist and native of Spain. It will be unveiled in April 2013 and placed in Juan Ponce de Leon Landing Park on Melbourne Beach. Various dignitaries, local, state, national, and from around the world are being invited for the local events which will include a mass, parade, banquet and certain other events to be tied in with activities being sponsored by the town of Melbourne Beach and Brevard County organizations, including Parks and Recreation. One Senior Place’s Poker Pete Crow is a way to honor popular client Pete DiMaria, who frequented the center’s activities club playing his favorite penny ante poker. “He lived a great life and was loved by so many people, so this is a good way to keep having fun together,” said Renee Rader, Pete’s granddaughter who became a receptionist at One Senior Place after bringing him there for services. She was snapped up by management

at the first staff opening. “We saw how attentive she was to him and what a hit she was with all the seniors,” said Audrey Chow-Jones. The two joked with other passing staff members, clients and family members who offered helpful hints as they put together Poker Pete, using the original Poker Pete’s jacket and tie. “This was the place I came when I needed to cry or wanted to laugh, and they had everything we needed to make a full life for my grandpa,” Rader said. “It feels good to be able to offer that to others.” For more information on the Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival, call 321-242-1235, “Like” the event on Facebook or go to ScarecrowStroll.com. In a flash, Community Chorus ‘mobs’ UNOs By Maria Sonnenberg

It was just another evening of dining at Uno Chicago Grill in Viera on Aug. 14, but a flash mob turned an ordinary day into an extraordinary experience, particularly considering that the mob launched not into a pop tune, but Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, no less. Dr. Robert Lamb, director of Brevard Community Chorus, was the first to stand up and begin singing. At least 50 other singers soon joined him. “It was a big love fest,” Lamb said. “After it was all over, strangers came over to us and gave us big hugs. Everybody had a wonderful time.” The timing was perfect, for Uno donated a portion of all sales that night to the Community Chorus. As members of the Community Chorus, the singers are well-acquainted with the works of Handel. At their performing home in the Maxwell C. King Center, the chorus has its hands full of Handel with annual performances of The Messiah. In fact, the chorus has just 

started rehearsals for this year’s December show. The all-volunteer group also joins with other musical organizations to delight audiences with performance of choral classics. Lamb is a professor of music and chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Brevard Community College.

Dr. Robert E. Lamb conducting.

Lamb has led his chorus as it sang its way through Europe in years past, and, in 2011, the international Festival of the Aegean in Greece. The 100-member chorus’ diverse membership spans from 18 to 80 years and represents all areas of the county. Some members have advance degrees in music, while others are talented amateurs who just love to sing. Brevard Community Chorus’ sister organization, the Brevard Chorale, is centered in Cocoa. Accompanying the Chorus are 30 musicians from the Brevard Symphony Orchestra. “We like to hire the best musicians we can find,” Lamb said. It’s a win-win situation for both Chorus and audience. “It enriches those who participate and those who listen,” Lamb said. “Great music made by great composers touches all of us.” Brevard Community Chorus welcomes new singers to its fold. Singers should have previous experience with choral singing. Rehearsals are weekly, beginning Sept. 4. For more information, call 321-433-7629 or watch the flash mob video at vieravoice.com. V

Friendship makes for showmanship at Brevard Zoo By Linda Wiggins

“Taste it, it’s good, she said, chasing down her reluctant victim. As part of the show, Rob and Jonny did a slide show and insect Q&A with the children, calling for lots of wiggling “abdomens, so named for the largest third of an insect’s body that was represented by tiny human rear ends. Suntree Internal Medicine’s new doctor has local ties By George White

Dr. Amanda Paul just started her career Sept. 1 at Suntree Internal Medicine, choosing to join a practice to be near family who earlier had relocated from the Northeast to live in Melbourne. Paul, originally from New Jersey, earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and pre-med at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, going on to the medical school at American University in St. Martin. She did her clinical rotations giving her a taste of each specialty in England and St. Thomas. From there, she completed a residency in internal medicine at Orlando Regional Medical Center and currently is working on completing a fellowship in

Anti-Aging. Working on older patients is not a new specialty, but the concept of anti-aging treatments takes in several different prevention concepts based on maintaining wellness, rather than having patients wait until they have an illness to address their health, she said. “Anti-aging is a lot of preventative medicine and we do things like bioidentical hormones. People are going to get old anyway. We’re trying to prevent the complications that they might have,’’ Paul said. Internal medicine seemed to be a good fit from the start, she said. “It was the most broad specialty and I felt like I would enjoy doing different things every day rather than just focusing on one area of

In addition, she and fellow Suntree Internal Medicine colleague Dr. Scott Hardoon had grown up together and had gone to the same medical school. “Last February, he had me try a month here to see if I liked it and I did. Everyone’s really nice here and I hear a lot of good things about the practice from my family,’’ she said. “I wanted to be a psychiatrist originally; that’s why I took psychology. It’s not like I thought it was going to be,’’ she said. Becoming board certified in anti-aging is her big goal now but she knows there will be others as her career develops. “It’s a two-year program but I haven’t thought of anything else to go after yet. One thing at a time,’’ she said. Other doctors at Dr. Abe Hardoon’s Suntree Internal Medicine include: Dr. Scott Hardoon, Dr. Edwin Chan and Anthony Dickerson, PA-C. World’s Fair quilt from 1904 still looks sharp

There are signs of wear, but the double size quilt overall is intact, showing extremely small and consistent stitching throughout. “When I got it, I did use it as a coverlet on the bed. It was somewhat worn already and why not enjoy it? It doesn’t go with the current exhibition, but eventually it will be displayed. The thing about textiles is you have to be so careful with light. Sometimes it can change the dye color,’’ Funk said. Things like this have no specific value on them, but this quilt is not only historic but has sentimental value from a long family history associated with it, she said. “I think you just have to

VIERA VOICE George White

Noted textile designer Ruth Funk recently visited a prize family quilt — the winner of first place in the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis — now being housed in the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts located on the campus of Florida Institute of Technology. Funk hopes the quilt can be put on display soon.

“I think it’s actually in fairly good condition, considering how old it is and that it was used daily. It clearly was well constructed,’’ said Sarah Smith, the new collections manager at the facility. The story goes that Funk’s great-great-grandmother had started the quilt in the 1860s. “She worked on it a long time but nobody knows for sure,’’ Funk said.

“Cloth and Couture, Couture Creations of Ruth E. Funk.” Funk is most known for using a basic square-cut jacket and the free-flowing Othello coat style. And she traces it all back to her childhood. “I’ve sewn all my life, starting when I was a little girl. I can’t really say when it started but I’ve always liked textiles and fibers. It’s putting things together; that’s what I do,’’ she said. Funk’s relationship with FIT goes back several years to when she was asked to participate in a weekend program. The result was her co-sponsoring the facility which also will help house her collection of jackets she designed. VV

Her family was from the South, but the quilt won the competition in St. Louis, a longtime family mystery, she said. “How it got to St. Louis or how she knew about the quilts there, we don’t know. Nobody knows the story of how it traveled there or why,’’ she said. Funk is considered a designer-adventurer, “collecting handmade ethnic textiles gathered from her extensive international travels scouring antique shops for vintage pieces,’’ to add to the jackets, according to the flap of her book

Viera has a new scoreboard By Carl Kotala

Fans walking into Hawks Stadium for the Sept. 28 football game against Rockledge were in for a bit of a surprise. Viera High debuted it’s new scoreboard during that game. The nearly 16-foot tall board had the words “Viera” and “Hawks” lit up at the top, with ambercolored digits that would make it easier to see from a distance. Viera athletic director Chris Gallagher said he wants people to walk into the stadium and get goosebumps, the feeling of excitement about being at a big game. “We’re just trying to elevate the image of the school, the program and the facility, make it noticeable when you drive by,” Gallagher said. The scoreboard was installed by Kendal Signs of Rockledge at a cost of $9,000, which was the amount donated to the school’s athletic program by Viera Pizza following its inaugural Eat My Crust 5K run in March. Construction began Aug.

will also be looking for other sponsors to advertise. That would help the school raise more money for its athletic programs and possibly pave the way for a new all-weather track, which could potentially help Viera host a regional track and field event, or other district or regional playoff games in other sports, such as lacrosse or soccer. For now, though, Gallagher is just happy to see the new scoreboard up and running, helping to enhance Viera’s game-day experience for fans. “It was a fun project to get started and work toward completing,” he said. “When you get so close to it, you just can’t wait. I’m excited for the fans that they’re going to get a chance to show up on the 28th and go, ‘Wow, what happened here?’” VV

Train of enthusiasm drives St. Mary’s annual fall festival

Question of the Month:

What is your favorite Halloween memory or costume, and why? Photos by Darrell Woehler

VIERA VOICE Darrell Woehler

Duncan MacKenzie and James Shutt, right, are building a train at the Harbor Square Marina on Merritt Island for St. Mary’s Fall Festival. By MARY BROTHERTON

Ramses Rodriguez

Many years ago, I dressed up for Halloween for the first time in the United States, 13-years old, as Zorro. I collected a lot of candy too.

Jerry Tucker

My wife and I decorated our whole frontyard — 14 bales of hay, including a make-believe graveyard. I dressed as a ghoul, standing very still, then jumped to scare the trick or treaters.

kathy Clinton

My favorite costume is a pumpkin. A friend of mine made a pumpkin costume for him and me, and that’s how I remember him at Halloween.

Vanessa Yoingco

Some 20 years ago, dressed as a chef — when I was a chef. Have now branched into the boutique business also.

Duncan MacKenzie’s family has attended St. Mary’s Catholic School for two generations. He currently has three children attending the school in Rockledge and, for the past six years, has donated his time and talent to the school’s fall festival fundraiser. St. Mary’s sixth-annual Fall Festival and Pumpkin Patch will be from 3 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the school, located at 1152 Seminole Dr. MacKenzie said, “It will be a lot of fun for little kids. The fall festival is fun for all ages. There are games, a haunted

house, entertainment, food, pumpkin patch and our principal will be kissing a pig.” In past years, school principal Sandra Basinger has kissed pigs and she pledged to kiss another creature this year if students can raise $1,000 in a class vs. class competition that kicked off Sept. 20. She will reveal what kind of creature she will kiss in early October. Basinger said. “I am amazed at the energy, enthusiasm and commitment from our students, parents and parishioners who make this happen every year. The least I can do is kiss a pig or something.”

For the 2012 festival, MacKenzie built a train from six 55-gallon steel drums for children to ride during the festival. A small tractor or lawn mower will pull the train around the school grounds. St. Mary’s students will name the train, which is currently called Little Train That Could. The name of the train will be announced Friday, Oct. 19. Also, MacKenzie is building the whirlwind ticket catching booth. Admission to the festival is free and no attraction costs more than $4. For more information, call 321-636-4208. VV

My favorite costume is the standard-type witch. Several years back, I was dressed as a witch, with my five brothers and sisters all dressed in different types of costumes. I would go out trick or treating. I remember we all got a lot of candy.

Probably my worst memory of Halloween is several years ago, going to Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Night. It was VERY scary, not just one thing, but everything.

Holy Trinity golf tournament marks Headmaster Ford’s retirement By George White

The athletic programs at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy’s Upper School have long benefited from an annual charity golf tournament held at Suntree Country Club. Now named after Holy Trinity alumna and LPGA star Vicky Hurst (Class of ‘08), the fundraising goal for the tournament to be held Dec. 1 has hit $50,000. But what makes this year’s event even more special is that it will also serve to recognize Mrs. Catherine Ford’s 25 years with the school as headmaster and her impending retirement. “In spite of the tremendous number of hours spent on the golf course and in practice, Vicky was totally involved

in school life,’’ Ford recalled. “She played on the tennis team, and she played basketball. She was even a photographer for yearbook. I expected Vicky to be amazingly successful, and she is! Her favorite quote in her senior yearbook is ‘If it is to be, then it is up to me.’ ” Ford said. The upcoming tournament is the third named for Hurst, which makes Ford all the more happy to also receive mention for her work at Holy Trinity and retirement. “Any time my name can be linked with Vicky Hurst’s, I consider it an honor. I’m a former golf coach, so, of course, I watch Vicky’s career very closely. I’m always following her hole-by-hole play online. It’s an honor

PAINTING

for me to be a part of her golf classic.’’ she said. Ford said she is most proud of her legacy in the many successful students who have walked through the halls at Holy Trinity and are now out in the world serving as good examples of what can be achieved with a strong foundation in education. “It’s been a privilege to be a part of this school community. We have produced awesome students, who are doing wonderful things in their grown-up worlds. I am proud of having been a part of establishing the Upper School campus so we could offer a seamless education from preschool through 12th grade. There are so many success stories from our graduates—excellent college placements,

outstanding college careers, and interesting professional endeavors— but I am most proud of the character and substance of our graduates. They are giving back to the world in real ways. I love my job, and I love HTEA,’’ she said. All the proceeds from the tournament will go toward funding all athletic programs at the upper school. In turn, many students benefiting from that money will be on hand to help. “All the athletes help that day and it’s mostly parents who play,’’ said Debby Simmons, HTEA director of Special Events and Alumni. “Vicky is just a wonderful alumna and has developed quite a VIERA VOICE Photo rapport with Mrs. Ford,’’ Vicky Hurst plans to honor Catherine Ford’s 25 years of service at Holy Trinity Episcopal Simmons said. SPORTS NOTEBOOK By Carl Kotala

HOLY TRINITY FOOTBALL The Tigers were off to a 3-0 start and averaging 245 rushing yards per game … Freshman running back Josh Harden was leading the way with 277 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Senior Nick Hamer was next with 178 yards and two scores …. Senior quarterback Johnny Gomez had thrown three touchdown passes with no interceptions … Defensively, senior linebacker Michael Boyle led the team with 25 tackles while junior linebacker Michael Leary IV posted five sacks.

VIERA HIGH FOOTBALL The Hawks got off to an 0-3 start, but had yet to play a district game, which means there was still plenty to play for … Viera’s running game was led by senior Jalen Jackson, who had 216 rushing yards on 53 carries … Junior quarterback Cody Dentmon was next with 122 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries … Freshman Marquis Mclean was the Hawks leading receiver with six receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown.

VIERA HIGH GIRLS GOLF Coach Greg Ford said his team has been progressing nicely throughout the season. The Hawks won each of their first four matches and has been showing a nice balance among its players. Junior No. 1 player

Samantha Dahl has improved dramatically since last season, recently shooting scores of 43, 40 and 43. Katie Jones has also been stepping up her game, with big help from an improved putting stroke.

HOLY TRINITY GIRLS GOLF Tigers coach Lisa Lewis has been happy with the play of her young team. In a match against Rockledge, Kendall Kara debuted with a 60, while Audrey Wilson shot a 65 and Kaley Stirtzinger shot 55. … In a victory that raised the Tigers to 3-0, top player Mary Lewis shot a 44. Taylor Crook had a 54 and Lindsey Webb and Emily Dixon each shot 55 … Eighth-grader Lilly Wall had a 60 in that match. VIERA HIGH BOYS GOLF Viera was undefeated in conference play and “getting stronger” as it prepared for the Cape Coast Conference tournament, which is set for Oct. 8 … The Hawks are also in line to win another district championship and hope to get out of regionals and back to the state tournament, which is Oct. 29-30. HOLY TRINITY BOYS GOLF The Tigers were expected to be strong this season and that’s evident from their 9-0 start … All top five players were averaging less than 40 strokes per nine holes,

including No. 1 player Kerry Sweeney, who was averaging 37.3 … Ryan Allison was shooting an average of 37.4, while Matt Allison and Casey Nierenberg were both at 39.1 and seventh-grader Calvin Sierota was at 38.3. At a recent 18-hole event, four players shot in the 70s.

VIERA VOLLEYBALL Senior outside hitter Christine Moore had 85 kills and 23 service aces and senior libero Shelby Jelinek had 129 digs to lead the defending district champions to a 7-1 start … Sophomore setter Elaina Valencia had 112 assists, while Caroline Alvarez had 45 … Sydney Coman was second on the team in kills with 46, followed by Alisha Bland with 32. HOLY TRINITY VOLLEYBALL The Tigers got off to an up-and-down start with a 5-4 record. However, coach Patrick Barrett said his team was starting to come along as the new players were playing with more confidence. That should help in the postseason … Seniors Izzy Carmona (51 kills) and Savannah Hicks (41) were playing well … Gabby Dixon returned from a preseason injury and was starting to have a big impact … Jenny Ryan was averaging 3.1 digs a game. Oh, brothers! Holy Trinity triplets play key role for Tigers By Carl Kotala

There are times when Ryan, Dylon and Brandon Collins can communicate on the football field without really having to say a word to each other. And it’s not just because the Holy Trinity seniors play side-by-side-by-side on the offensive line. “We do have those triplet moments,” Ryan Collins said. “Sometimes, it’s out of football, too. I’ll be thinking of a song and (Dylon) will start singing it.” The Collins triplets are a big reason why the Tigers were able to get off to a 3-0 start this season. Brandon plays center, while Ryan and Dylon are guards. “I think it’s rare that all three of us can play on the O-line,” Brandon said. “I don’t think there’s many triplets playing football. It’s pretty rare that it ever happens, and that we’re playing right next to each other.” As similar as their line of thinking may be at times, they are also quite different. Brandon is interested in meteorology, though he sees himself as more of an analyst than a TV weatherman. Dylon and Ryan are both interested in engineering, but Ryan is also into computers. Holy Trinity coach Mark Ainsley said that outside of a few college visits this summer, the triplets have never missed a workout. “They’re not the kid you’re looking around for at the start of practice to see if

And yes, three different personalities. “Ryan is probably the most athletic of them,” Ainsley said. “He’s a little bit more reserved. If I had to pick one, I would say Dylon is a little bit more of a ladies’ man, Mr. Personality. Brandon is the kind of guy, it’s not going to shock me if he’s sitting in a computer room somewhere for NASA some day. He’s a highly intelligent kid, well-read (and very)

organized.” The trio admits that it will probably take them a few years to realize just how special a time this is in their lives. Right now, they’re just focused on helping the Tigers get back to the playoffs. “We’re glad that family is here,” Ainsley said. “If they were at another school right now, we’d be in a lot of trouble. No doubt about that.” VV

Triplets (from l-r) Brandon, Dylon and Ryan Collins are playing their final year of football together at Holy Trinity. Their goal is to make the playoffs for the first time in their careers.

they’re there,” Ainsley said. “They come from really good parents. Mom is awesome, very supportive of the program. Dad is the same way. They come from good stock, and it shows in the family values they have.” The triplets were naturally competitive with each other growing up. Now that energy is focused on helping the Tigers’ offense function as a cohesive unit. Knowing so much about

each other is a big help. “It’s nice, because when we get home we can talk about stuff,” Dylon said. “We kind of understand how each other is going to do things. And during games, when we talk about who is going to block who, we kind of have an understanding.” They have three slightly different builds (Ryan is 6-foot2, 240 pounds, Dylon is 5-11, 235 and Brandon is 5-11, 215).

Hawks hope to improve CCC standings

ViERa VOiCE Carl Kotala

The goal this season for both Viera High cross country teams is to improve their standing in the Cape Coast Conference. Viera Regional Park, Sept. 19, 2012, By CaRL KOtaLa

The Viera High boys and girls cross teams are focused on a similar goal this season. “I think our goal this year is just to improve our Cape Coast (Conference) standings overall, and that’s an attainable goal for us,” girls coach Kate Howick said. The Viera girls finished eighth out of 10 teams at last year’s CCC meet, while the boys were fifth out of 13 teams. While the boys team is young – transfer Jerad Yohn is the only senior– the team has

been showing well in its first few meets. Junior co-captain Justin Sherrod said the talent on this year’s team is a little more spread out than it was last season. “Our varsity is very competitive,” boys coach Cara Houser said. “Every meet, we’ve got kids switching back and forth. (There is) a lot of good talent on the boys team, I think.” In addition to Sherrod and Yohn, other top boys this season will be No. 1 runner Morgan Levine, co-captain Ryan Shiller, Jeremy Dean and Ryan Miller.

The girls, meanwhile, have a first-time runner in senior Kelsey Dolan, who has been putting up solid times. She is a co-captain along with senior Katherine Castro. Other key runners include Suzy Henderson, McKenzie Estes and Jessica Manifold. “Our girls team is looking pretty good,” Castro said. “All of us have been working really hard and at our last meet, all of us dropped time. I think toward the end of the season, when it comes to Cape Coast, I think we’ll do pretty well.” Castro, who missed qualifying for the regionals by two spots last season, is determined to break through this year. She also hopes to break the 20-minute mark, which she missed by just 10 seconds last season. “I still have a lot of work to do,” she laughed. “I have to do it this year.” Sherrod, meanwhile, also has his eyes on the regional meet. “I know to reach regionals, I need to be in the 17s,” he said. “Right now, I’m at 18:53, so I’ve still got some (time) to drop off.” VV

distance and stamina are keys to new Quest cross country team success

ViERa VOiCE Linda Wiggins

Quest Elementary School’s Cross Country Team launched in early September, 2012. By Linda Wiggins

The Quest Elementary School cross country team took off in September with 36 fifth- and sixth-grade students. The first meeting focused on the importance of hydrating throughout the day by drinking a lot of water. Also covered was the the proper way to warm up and stretch before running and the correct way to stretch. The team’s goal is to increase distance at every practice, which takes place every Friday after school. “We want to get as many

students as possible to go to our first team run, which will be the Pumpkins in the Park 5K Run & Fitness Walk. Friday, October 26 at 6:30 p.m. We will be participating in a few other 5Ks through the year as well,” said Missy Madel, one of two Quest teachers to cocoach the cross country team. Added co-coach Jaime Slentz, “There are other elementary schools that have cross country teams, but this is Quest Elementary’s first year and we are off to a great running start.” For more information, call the school 321-242-1411. Manatee sand sculpture marks 10 years

Quest band gives students a head start

Viera Voice photo by Susan Taylor

Manatee Elementary School unveiled its new sand sculpture on Sept. 11, provided each year courtesy of Sandsational Sand Sculpting. By Linda Wiggins

Visitors to Manatee Elementary School frequently “ooh” and “ahh” over a bigger-than-life-size sculpture made from sand in the front lobby. The school unveiled a new sculpture on Sept. 11. This year’s craft marks the 10-year anniversary of the school, which opened in 2002. It represents the decade by depicting young students studying, and 10 years later one becoming an astronaut, one becoming a veterinarian and another becoming an engineer. The artwork took three days to complete and will be on display at the school through the 2012-13 school year. “Manatee has been privileged to have a new

sand sculpture designed and built in our school lobby by Sandsational since our school opened,” said Nicki Hensley, volunteer and special events coordinator for Manatee. The sculpture was created by Jill Harris and world champion sand sculptor Thomas Keot, owners of Sandsational Sand Sculpting. Manatee is the only school to have Sandsational’s work on campus. The project is a joint effort to promote art in public schools and to encourage students to pursue fine art. The team’s creation always incorporates a manatee and has used the same sand since the beginning, broken down and rebuilt each year. For more information, call the school at 321-433-0050 or go to Sandsational.com. VV

By Linda Wiggins

Quest Elementary School is giving students a musical leg up on the competition by offering band to fifth and sixth graders. It is

a prototype for other K-6 schools that want to offer band if the effort is successful, helping students prepare to earn bragging rights and eventually scholarships beginning in

seventh grade and building through 12th grade and on through college level. “I’ve been in band since seventh grade. It’s been my passion,” said Laurie Foote, Quest music teacher who launched the effort. “It’s been fantastic and interest is great, so no doubt it will just be the first non-magnet school in Brevard to offer it.” Robert Louis Stevenson School of the Arts offers elementary band because it is a magnet school for music, drama and other arts education. Students must provide their own instruments and practice during non-school hours. Initially, the program started with beginner level, but next year there will be beginner and intermediate options. “It’s a lot of fun,” said fifthgrader Madelyn Shafer, who is mastering the clarinet. There are 40 band members so far, with a total of 150 music students at Quest, including strings and chorus. The band plans its first performance Dec. 13 in the school auditorium. Snack sales at all musical performances will go toward purchases of equipment and instruments. Foote is Box Tops for Education teacher coordinator, directing all monies raised for the music program. BUSINESS

Character creates nine stores and growing By MARY BROTHERTON

John Meyers believes that if it is your job to scrub toilets, you should make them the cleanest toilets in the state. He should know. When he was 16, he started his McDonald’s career by scrubbing toilets. The self-labeled “high-strung” entrepreneur owns the recently opened McDonald’s on Stadium Parkway, one of the newest additions to the businesses at Stadium Crossing near Publix. Meyers comes from a long family history of McDonald’s owners and operators. His mother and father owned McDonald’s locations for 50 years in New York. Since his first job cleaning the bathrooms, Meyers has worked his way up through management to own his own stores. When, in 2008, McDonald’s offered eight corporate-owned locations to Meyers, his wife, Billie Jean, and four children moved with him to the Viera area, as did his director of operations, Dona Zulawski. He owns the locations in Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa, U.S. 1 in Rockledge, Merritt Island, within the Viera Walmart and now the site near Publix. He has invested in major renovations on most of his stores in the past few years and has plans to do more. He said, “Not a lot bothers me, but I don’t like to see people being rude to front line service workers. I’m not just talking about McDonald’s. The customer is always right, but respect should go both ways.” His business goal for 2012 is, “Continued improvement of our existing restaurants, and continued development of our people.”

It’s more personal than storage at a Viera business by Angela Smith

With the hectic holiday season around the corner, Viera businessman Jerry Hart wants to make things easier for locals who have to ship gifts elsewhere. He hopes to make long lines at the post office and area shipping stores a thing of the past. Hart, owner of Viera Storage Company, will add shipping to the long list of services at his thriving business which already includes, U-Haul rentals, a variety of storage unit sizes for things like campers and boats to things from the attic. “We’re looking to do something different and to step it up a bit,” Hart said. “Why not be both a business and a place of convenience?” Whenever you enter an industry, like Hart’s, that is pretty well saturated with competition you have to do something to stand out. The self-storage business that’s nestled behind two automotive shops off North Wickham Road has taken the traditional idea of a self-storage company, transforming it into a home away from home for more than just people’s stuff. “We’re not your usual selfstorage place,” Hart said. “We’re trying to expand on what we already do and become that neighborhood business.” With two decades of the self-storage industry underneath his belt, Hart has owned the storage business since 2005. He only recently took over the facility as local owner and for the past nine months has made it into a place where people not only want to All major credit cards accepted

high priority,” said building manager Jaclyn Hazelwood. “We have all of that. People choose to pay for storage because they’re attached to the items and don’t want to part with it. We keep it safe and clean.” Matt Walker, who stores his commercial vehicle and equipment at the facility, has witnessed recent changes and so far likes what he sees. “It’s a big property, but they make it feel small and comfortable,” Walker said. “I come in and they know me by my name. I’m not just another number and dollar to them. store their stuff, but hang out too. To do this, he had a party this past summer and invited each tenant; celebrating them, while also getting to know them. “We’re local and people like that,” Hart said. “It’s a sense of community here. People come and say hi and want to stick around. That makes or breaks a business.” Unlike others, Viera Storage Company wants to have that comforting and welcoming vibe. Combine that with a coffee bar, detailed customer service and a place where everyone knows your name, you have an environment where people stop and stay for while. “It’s important to be a place where people know security, cleanliness, convenience and service is a

Eastside delivers customer service with every delicious bite By Mary Brotherton

VIERA VOICE Darrell Woehler

Mike Acosta and Philip Crist display their large pizzas at the Eastside location of Viera Pizza.

Mike Acosta, operating partner at Viera Pizza, first made his presence known in the small site located at Viera Boulevard and Murrell Road. When his restaurant expanded and crossed Interstate 95 to relocate on Stadium Parkway, he was excited to offer patrons an expanded menu and a larger dining area for a more fulfilling dining experience. To provide an alternative menu, he introduced Eastside Pitas, Paninis & Wraps, Oh My! Eastside opened to rave reviews in the original Viera

Pizza location on Murrell Road. Once again, Acosta has made a change, based on his customers’ recommendations. “People want pizza. I want to give them what they want,” he said. Acosta said that Viera Pizza Eastside adds to the menu of Pitas, Paninis & Wraps, Oh My! “Now, people have another choice. The eastside location will be an overflow store, for those times when our stadium location is really busy or if they just don’t want to cross the bridge.”

7th Annual National Cruise Night Event on October 24th from 6p-7:30p at the office.

MSC Cruises and Crystal Cruise Lines Representatives will be here this evening with cruise specials for attendees. Enjoy this evening with the sounds of “True I” Reggae Music and light refreshments. As I do every year with National Cruise week, a portion of my sales goes to a nonprofit organization. This year it will be bittersweet as I kick off the fundraiser for my secretary, Tina Meyer, who will be leaving July 2013 to go on Adventures in Missions on the World Race Program to 11 countries in 11 months to preach gospel, work in orphanages, minister to women and children trapped in prostitution due to human trafficking and bring the hope of Christ’s love to many tribes and nations.

Local car owners can rejoice because there is a new place in town for quality, low-mileage used tires and new tires that are competitively priced to sell quickly. Jim Carey and Bob Crim own Global Environmental Engineering Services, which has sparked their new business in Rockledge. J&B Tires opened in June 2012. Crim said, “We had access to good-quality used tires and wanted to sell them at a fair price.” Carey and Crim also said that they can get new tires at some of the area’s most competitive prices. “We don’t have control over the sizes of the used tires in stock,” Carey said, “but we can order new tires at what we think are the lowest prices around.” The store located on Barton Boulevard can special order new tires or specialty tires for their customers with discriminating needs. Carey said, “We were doing some work for auto recyclers in our engineering company and we saw many quality tires that still had useful mileage in them. We did not want them to end up in the landfill, so we decided to open the new business.” J&B Tires is located at 877 Barton Blvd. in Rockledge. Breaking young minds out of the box

Melboure Regional Chamber Viera/Suntree Business Council Brevard Zoo • Sept. 19, 2012

By Linda Wiggins

Astronauts approaching the moon hear a boom and pressure readings fall. They scramble to address the oxygen leak lest they blow up or eventually suffocate in space. The rest of their team walks them through the rescue from mission control with materials and tools they know are on the spacecraft. Cool heads prevail with creative thinking and the day is saved. It sounds very much like Apollo 13, the near-failed space mission that kept a nation spellbound, a tale later turned into a blockbuster movie. But it could also be a day of the week after school at an Odyssey of the Mind club meeting at schools or homes across the Viera and Suntree area. Youngsters must do all the work themselves, on teams, creating contraptions big and small, intricate and even self-powered, from odds and ends. “It definitely teaches them to think out of the box,” said Cathy Burger, a past team leader whose children took part in OM, even winning competitions due to creativity and teamwork. It’s no secret that children on the Space Coast excel in OM, and that activities like OM help prepare young people for space jobs, according to Judith Carr, teacher coordinator of the OM teams at Suntree Elementary School, and whose children all took part in OM. “It’s hard to say whether that is because of the talent

and coordination. • Music: teaches spatial and timing awareness, and some experts say that translates to prowess in math. • Gymnastics, dance and other typically individual sports: teaches coordination, builds strength, poise. • Arts: teach appreciation for the esoteric and transformative powers of nonverbal expression. Whatever the outside activity, all of it counts toward better placement in college and career, according to Carr. “Plus it’s a lot of fun for kids and precious time enjoyed with parents,” Carr said. For more information on OM or any extracurricular activity that might be offered after school, contact the school office or call 321-633-1000, EXT 500 to be connected. VV

already here, with parents working for the Space Center and being involved in their children’s development, or whether resources are available to help produce the talent needed there because it is critically important, but there definitely is a strong connection,” Carr said. Other extracurricular activities also build better minds as well as bodies, and develop a sense of team as well. A small sampling of the options, and just a few of their benefits: • Scouting: Whether Boy or Girl Scouts or faith-based programs, scouting builds a sense of accomplishment and independence, while also teaching life skills. • Soccer, basketball, football and other aerobic sports: teaches teamwork over individual achievement, develops strength, endurance

Yes, it is all in your head: brain scans show illness, recovery

VIERA VOICE LInda Wiggins

Fairchild’s technicians gather the brain data through nuclear medicine scans that make activity in different areas of the brain visible, and with neurological feedback. The nuclear data is then sent to Dr. Michael Uszler, MD, a medical specialist who interprets the data, which show those parts of the brain that are either under- or over-functioning

Dr. Scott Fairchild (left) and nuclear medicine technologist Brian Baldwin (right) show how brain scans are displayed on a computer screen, with biofeedback technician Jason Berk (rear) adding input on the brain’s qEEG-mapped electrical currents. then confirm By Linda Wiggins

When complaining of a mood disorder, a behavioral issue or even dementia, doctors of yore coined the phrase, “It’s all in your head,” to mean it was not a real issue, but one made up by the individual, to be overcome with sheer willpower at best. Today, doctors can say “it’s all in your head” and mean it differently. Brain imaging scans, electrical feedback and other physiological diagnostic tools can show areas of the brain that are not functioning properly. This helps medical and psychological doctors prescribe treatment, and

Spotted Cucumber Beetle

By Charlotte and Charlie Corbeil

Charlie Corbeil

Florida Master Naturalist pbase.com/charlie_corbeil

The spotted cucumber beetle surfaces from Canada to Mexico. It is abundant in the southern range of its territory. The bright yellowish-green body and six black dots on each wing facilitate its identity. This creature resembles the

green ladybug. Whereas the ladybug (a beetle) is beneficial by controlling pests, the spotted cucumber beetle is detrimental to gardens. This insect’s name originates from its attraction to cucurbits (cucumber, melon, and squash species) and other host vegetation. It targets commercial crops, home gardens and ornamentals. Stems, leaves, buds and blossoms are damaged; young roots are harmed by the larvae. Such infestation limits marketable yields. Control by botanical or chemical methods is often essential. However, home gardeners can apply practical deterrents to protect their harvests, such as row

(Diabrotica undecimpunctata)

covers, screens and cones. Broccoli, goldenrod, white

radish and other repellent plants are also helpful.

At the Viera Wetlands, this photo was taken with a 90-mm macro lens in order to capture the colorful details of the diminutive (Âź-in long) beetle. Macro (close-up) photography portrays the subject at full size or larger; it also produces a shallow depth of field (the area of the photo in sharp focus). Ambient light is optimal behind the camera. The subject should be free of shadows; this is problematic when the macro lens is extremely close. When increased depth of field is preferred, a smaller aperture is utilized. In macro photography, a tripod and flash improve the chances of a sharp image. VV

written reminder. We also began phoning delinquent owners with positive results. We aggressively send delinquents to a collection attorney. Some attorneys do not charge the association upfront fees. The majority of their fee is usually collected from the owner. Again, contact your association attorney for details. Most attorneys will negotiate their fees. Over the last several years, I have noticed more and more associations adding a line item in their budget for bad debt or nonpayment of assessments. That exacerbates the consequence of the delinquent owner. The addition of the bad debt line item creates a situation whereby the upstanding owners are paying the assessment of delinquent owners. Deciding the amount to set aside may be a judgment call. Each association may have different factors to consider. A suggestion is to set aside at least the amount of bad debt written off the prior year. A more conservative approach would be to track your three-year history for an average and add a reasonable arbitrary amount.

with a minimun of $20 purchase.

Associations of all types are finding it increasingly difficult to collect past-due fees. Whether you live in a condominium, cooperative, mobile home community, or homeowners association, the stressed economy has dramatically increased delinquencies. This month’s column will discuss various ways to step up the collection process. In 2010, the Florida Legislature amended some of the association laws in favor of the association. Associations are now allowed to collect rent from tenants of delinquent owners. This stays in effect until the delinquent owner’s fees are paid in full. Included in the new amendments are strong penalties to the owner. If your association is attempting to collect fines, you are now allowed to place a lien on the owner once the fine amount goes over $1,000. Associations are no longer allowed to file their own liens, however, so I strongly recommend you contact your association attorney for details on these procedures.
