Happy Anniversary to Senior Life!

This month marks the 11th anniversary of Senior Life and just like any 11-year-old; we know we have not fully reached our potential, despite how much we’ve grown and how much we’ve learned. We have changed over the past 11 years and we know we couldn’t have done it without your support and encouragement. You’ve probably noticed we have some new names in our family of writers and photographers, but we still have many of the names you’ve come to recognize and trust. December 2011 8 15 20 22 25 26 32 33

This is the time of year for most people to start making lists and wishes. Whether you celebrate with Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Festivus, most likely, you are thinking of giving or receiving gifts of some sort. If you have opted out of the commercial side of the holidays, you might be thinking of your upcoming new year’s resolution and wishing for fresh starts or ways to improve your life. Many years ago, I joked that my resolution for that year was to stop making resolutions, and in a way, it’s no joke. I can’t tell you that every day, when my feet hit the floor, I give thanks to be upright or consider how to spend my day. even I’m not that organized. From time to time, I do contemplate how my life is at that moment, compared to what it was from a former period in time and I always feel happy to report, if only to myself, that I am in a good place in life. one friend told me she thought I lived an exciting life and I suppose I do, though I had never thought of it that way. I work for a great organization with some of the most talented people I know. My job allows me to interact with genuine heroes and celebrities on a regular basis and I get to do fun and exciting things – just so I can report back to you! every day may not generate blockbuster memories, but every day, I try to remember something that I learned about the fabulous Senior Life readers.

Bob noe is a double threat in the brass section By mary brotherton

Bob noe, pronounced “no-ie,” plays third cornet in the Melbourne Municipal Band, which he joined after moving to the area from Long Island to work at Grumman (now northrop Grumman). noe played in a cornet trio with the Katonah High School band at the 1939 new york World’s Fair. He later studied Aeronautical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, n.y., where he played lead trumpet in the college marching band and the Campus Seranaders, a 14-piece dance band. He also played trumpet in the Huntington, Long Island Community Band. noe states that the cornet and the trumpet are played in the same way, making it easy for him to play both instruments.

“The trumpet, which I switched to from the cornet in college, was played by my idol, Harry James. Its tone is a little more strident than the cornet tone, which is mellower.” The musician explained that slight differences in the geometry of musical instruments make huge differences in the resulting sound. According to noe, trumpeters try many types and sizes of mouthpieces to get the perfect tone. “Some of my happiest times were, and still are, spent behind my trumpet mouthpiece and I can highly recommend continuing playing a musical instrument throughout your entire life. For example I once spent five days at a convention in Atlantic City, all expenses paid, playing as a substitute with the Albany, n.y. Shrine Band.” The Melbourne Municipal Band was established in 1965 with 16 members. Today, more than 80

Cape retiree turns alligator hunter

Funny thing is… By SaMMy haDDaD

But should you be lucky And get in the mall You would find true terror Especially if you’re small

The holiday season finds people happy, joyful, full of generosity and good cheer, until you get to the mall. With this in mind during the season of brotherly love I created, The Chris-Myth Story.

For in this place Of happiness and cheer You’ll find wall-to-wall people Not one is happy you’re here. But if you were tiny And tried to look around All you would see were butts and bags You might not ever be found!

Twas the night before Christmas And all through the store Every last-minute shopper Had to buy just one more. The smartphones were hung In the windows with care In hopes that all technoids Would decide to shop there. But before you could get in To max out your card In the lot you’d risk much Just parking your car. Suddenly you see bright flashing lights But these lights were not just on the trees They were on shining Monte Carlos Driven by the local police. In the lot at this mall Christmas cheer would not linger Because of dings, dents, and slams And people with one finger.

columnists Titusville highlights

In nearby Titusville, you can visit a number of my favorite educational and inexpensive sites. I suggest the award-winning Parrish Medical Center Complex on north Washington Ave. In 2002, Parrish Medical Center opened its large facility incorporating each of the seven healing environment elements as recommended by the Center for Health Design. Inside, the ceiling soars to five stories with wonderful natural light. Parrish Health Village is where three of Titusville’s most notable historic homes have been moved after extensive refurbishment. These historic buildings create a sense of charm, dignity and grace. Call 321-268-6111 for more details. you may want to check out the American Police Hall of Fame and Museum at 6350 Horizon Dr. Founded in 1960, it is the nation’s first national police museum and memorial. open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, the $12 admission is discounted for children, seniors, military, law enforcement officers and their survivors. Call 321-264-0911 for more information. The United States Astronaut Hall of Fame, part of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, is another unique destination in Titusville, but you may want to reserve a full day for this outing. open from 12 to 6 p.m., you can explore the vast collection of art works, see remarkable displays, exhibits and tributes dedicated to space exploration. Bring your grandchildren or have your own photo taken with “the space man” and enjoy lunch at several self-service restaurants

with many menu options or have lunch with an astronaut. Located at at 6225 Vectorspace Blvd., the Complex is open daily, except Dec. 25 and certain launch days. There is a huge variety of options for admission, too, so you may want to call 321-269-6101 for all the details. The Merritt Island national Wildlife Refuge is on SR 402. More than 1,500 species of plants and animals live on 140,000 acres. I recommend the visitor information center located four miles east of Titusville as a great place to start your visit to this marvelous and free destination. Call 321-861-0667 for more information. My final recommendation is the Valiant Air Command Warbird Air Museum at 6600 Tico Rd. each March, this museum sponsors an astounding air show and throughout the year, the museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission starts at $18, with customary discounts. Contact the museum at 321-268–1941 for price information, as the museum frequently offers free admission, such as when it opens the hangars and gift shop for the upcoming Boomer Senior Guide expo. As December begins I’m not looking forward to seeing what happens every year: people complaining about the commercialism that starts after Halloween; people complaining parades should be called Christmas, not holiday parades; people not understanding the beliefs of others and being considerate, which often ruins a season of happiness for all, even if for different reasons. Any of the holidays that occur during this time are important and usually joyous celebrations. Christmas for Christians, Chanukah for Jews, Kwanzaa (cultural not religious) for African-Americans, Bodhi Day for Buddhists and some years, Ramadan for the Muslims are all important to the celebrants. The real meaning for the religious ones takes place in the home, in the houses of worship, in the hearts of people. Some people not realizing there are other holidays besides their own take the attitude that the season should only mention their own holiday not thinking about and respecting the beliefs and feelings of the others. I believe the expression very popular in December ends with, “Goodwill to all.” each of the holidays should be celebrated by those who are of that

religion or culture with this good holiday feeling but call to mind that the reason they are Lucy celebrating has Kline nothing to do with the commercialism of stores advertising to make bigger profits, shopping, drinking good cheer or spending money. With all the fighting going on in this world, partly due to a difference in the beliefs of the many different people, we should particularly be proud that our country has freedom of religion and the separation of church and state, created so that no level of government could promote one religion over another. Therefore neutrality must be followed and public events sponsored by any government accomplish this when they have a holiday parade or any holiday occurrence. That same occurrence by individuals is celebrated in their homes, in their houses of worship and in their hearts. Whatever your belief and practices, may December, the month ending the Gregorian year, be a good and happy one to all and meaningful to you in your own personal beliefs.

Memories As people age, there are comments made about memory loss. When you forget something, people joke. “you have early-onset Alzheimers.” The senior person’s response, while pointing to the head may be, “I have so much stored up here that it takes longer to retrieve the information.” During holiday periods, people recall experiences and events of years gone by. Celebrations, decorations, songs, trees and reunions trigger memories. The recall mechanism helps us gather what we have learned and stored. People who live a long life have had speed bumps as well as happy memories on their journey. Happy memories could include childhood adventures, special birthdays, high school sports, buying the first automobile, the first love, religious milestones, college, the first job, marriage, births of children and grandchildren, travel and retirement. For each person the happy memories add continuous joy in life. each person has his or her share of sad memories. They may include teenage years, auto accidents, not making the sports team, deaths of family and friends, boot camp, combat, loss of jobs, financial setbacks, failed marriages and lingering illnesses. Life is a mixture of good and bad memories. People live, grow and learn from these memories. They remember without agonizing. Mental fitness, which is so important for a long life, strengthens memory as well as knowing that life is an adventure.

For many years Reminisce, the magazine that brings back the good times, has shared memories for its readers. each issue includes numerous photographs that take the reader back 50 years or more. each issue includes life celebrations, old automobiles, life events, travel, teen years, advertisements, reunions, cartoons, financial challenges, humor, military experiences, unforgettable fashions, recipes, embarrassing moments, radio show memories and a legacy for the future. Preserving memories can be part of your legacy. Seniors are compiling family histories, using scrapbooking techniques to chronicle family photo memories while identifying people. others are writing their autobiographies. no fancy writing skills are required—just write your memories in your style and words. As people enjoy these memory activities, they relive the memories with a focus on the good times. Holiday gifts now include memory book gifts for the family. May your memories be happy! Bingo! The magic word to cash prizes for seniors ing the game of numbers. “People who come to our games just want to get out of the house and meet and be around other people, said Manz “I think if there weren’t any prizes people would still come. People have been coming for years and years because when you play bingo with us, it’s like you’re a part of a family. Although the game continues to be popular, some organizers say it’s being replaced with the fast-growing stripmall casinos. “The drive to play bingo is no longer there like it used to be, said former Greater Palm Bay Senior Center bingo organizer Paul Gallant, who said game attendance has slightly dropped over the past year. “Simply because of the arcades that have opened up and certain state laws, people want to go where the money is and that’s where it is. But some say they’ll still continue the original way, in the hall with actual game boards. “Why not play the traditional way? “I’ve only played a few times and haven’t won, but someday I will and it will be nice, said Joan Stevenson. It can change in an instant when you hear someone yell, “Bingo!â€? Just like that, there’s a winner, the game is over and someone has extra cash. Played in halls and senior centers around the U.S., bingo is one of the country’s most popular games of chance. originating in Italy in the 1600s, a form of lottery called Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia, it soon became a hit in the U.S. in the early 19th century under the name “beano,â€? where players used dried beans, rubber stamps and cardboard to play. Soon it became bingo and by the 1940s was a wild success. Although it’s not exactly a Vegas casino game, bingo has been drawing hundreds of players throughout the county, with cash and prizes for the winners. “It’s amazing. Making the headlines with her birthday By Mary Brotherton

Two days after her 100th birthday, Catherine Rodriquez was surprised when she paid her regular visit to Senior Care of Brevard, a day center for adults. She was surrounded by family, friends and staff members. Additionally, a crew from Channel 13 joined Councilman Whipple of Cocoa and Commissioner Davis of Cocoa Beach in wishing her a happy birthday. Linda Wagner, who works at Senior Care, said, “Miss Catherine is sharp as a tack and could probably pull more from the filing cabinet in her mind than I could. There is nothing wrong with her memory. She has been previously very active in the community but due to physical restrictions, she has been basically confined to a wheelchair although she is able to get around with a walker. According to Wagner, the centenarian’s life is full of memories. “She is a survivor of the Great Depression and years ago, she lectured on the depression. The mother of Raymond Rodriguez, former vice mayor and commissioner of Cocoa Beach, said, “I had a good life. For more information about Senior Care of Brevard, call 321-631-9014. Locals give advice on senior computer buying By anGela SMith

The holidays are quickly approaching and prices on big ticket items such as computers are dropping — giving consumers more choices — a good thing for some. For others, it makes their buying decision rather difficult. “When I first bought my computer a year ago I had no clue what I was doing and what I needed, said local senior Meredith Rogers. “I purchased whatever the young man at the store said I had to have and after talking with my children I realized I didn’t need any of it. Many seniors regret their large purchases, for the other reasons. From an array of personal computers and tablets, to sleek iPads and laptops, the task of finding the one for them becomes increasingly harder and many fall victim to the salesperson’s pitch. With the help of local support groups, purchasing a computer this holiday season can easier. Larry French of the Brevard Users Support Group suggests you should have questions prepared to ask the salesperson, along with a list of how you will be using the computer. “Don’t over buy, French said. “That’s the main problem I see. People get a computer that’s more powerful than what they needed it for. you can buy a simple one for under $500. While desktops are less portable, a little cheaper and more durable, French believes a laptop might be a better purchase. “We get asked this question all the time, French said. “It’s a personal choice, but if you plan to travel a lot, a laptop is a good thing to have and you can also set it up and use it at home. It also makes it easier to bring to the club for us to look at and help you with. According to Richard Bradley of the Space Coast Macintosh Users Group, the choice of the operating system really doesn’t matter. “From a beginner’s perspective, both have almost the same interfaces

that are pretty easy to use, Bradley said. “If you look at a MAC years ago and today, the menu is almost the same. It relatively doesn’t change, unlike Windows where you have to learn the updates and changes occur a lot. According to Stacey Kile of Simply Seniors Computer Tutors, who hosts computer classes at the Wickham Park Senior Center, both a PC and a MAC will take you to the Internet, enable you to send and receive emails and do word processing. “I find that the Macintosh operating systems gives you one way to do things and the only way to do them, says Kile. “But if you’re looking for more choices on how to do things, Microsoft is the other option and it’s much cheaper. As for safety concerns regarding viruses, Bradley suggests that Macintosh is a bit safer as more people use Microsoft and it is more likely the security risks occur on the most popular operating system. He still suggests security measures no matter what system you have as each one is prone to anything.

Kile is holding a special computer buying class for seniors at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 9 at the Wickham Park Senior Center. Call 321-255-4494 for details about the class. SL

Fiduciary responsibility By frank kneiSer, cMca, aMS, PcaM

Although there is a disclaimer at the end of my column that states I am not an attorney, I will reemphasize it at the beginning of this column. This topic is meant to be a layman’s guide to fiduciary responsibility and not a legal opinion. Many times over the years, I have been asked the meaning of fiduciary responsibility. Dictionary.com defines a fiduciary as “a person bound to act as a trustee for another’s benefit, as a trustee in relation to his beneficiary. That simply defines a community association board member. Florida Homeowners Association statute 720.303(1) and Florida Condominium Association law 718.111(1)(a) have the exact same following language — “The officers and directors of an association have a fiduciary relationship to the members who are served by the association. This language is in the law because board members represent the community as a public interest. When association owners accept the position of officer or board members, they have the responsibility to act in good faith and take the association’s best interest when making decisions on behalf of the community. Board members may not consider personal interest and remember that the board acts as a single entity rather than individually as directors. Fiduciary responsibility requires that decisions are made carefully after exercising due diligence on the subject to be determined. If sufficient information is not available to make an educated conclusion, the board should table the matter to another specific time. The interim should be used to consult experts, set relative specifications, consider alternatives and be sure the end result accomplishes the original goal. your association residents elected a board because they rely on it to preserve property values, maintain and enhance the common property and carefully and fairly carry out the association documents. once this is accomplished, the board has acted to fulfill the common good and satisfied the fiduciary responsibility. It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his community association manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@suntreeflorida.com. SL

grandparents ROCK !

Grandparents share love of service By linDa WiGGinS

John and Debbie Linden love spending time with their grandchildren, but what they love most is time spent with a purpose. Beyond helping others, Debbie and her mother, Betty Mosely, model motherly love for their local grands and greatgrands, Alex and Ariel. John and Debbie are rarely seen apart. For the last 20 years, they have spent day and night together, at the dusk of their career working for the same boss in navy civil service. After retirement, they volunteer for the King Center, Brevard Rescue Mission, His Place Ministries, Guardian Ad Litem and local missions through Church at Viera. “Whether it is our local grandchildren, or our other six grandchildren scattered across the United States, we teach love of service,” Debbie said. “The children make a unique contribution. When we are volunteering at the rescue mission or any place with children, our grandchildren simply play with them and give them a sense of normalcy they lack in crisis.” Debbie and Betty make a unique contribution within their own family. Alex and Ariel’s mom is not around, so in addition to setting an example of service to others, they also make time for fun. The three generations do what they call girls day out, shopping and having lunch. “It’s important they receive that special maternal love and attention and female role modeling,” John said. “It’s something I certainly can’t do.” The entire family shares a love of the movies, alternating choices of comedy, drama or action flicks and movie house location. one thing the entire clan does not take part in is travel, though John and Debbie love it and practically keep bags packed to dash off at a moment’s notice. “We did a family cruise once, and it ended up being a lot of work, and we barely got to do a thing we wanted to do as a couple,” Debbie said. “Been there, done that.” To contact the Lindens or support them in their passion for local mission work, call 321- 259-3454. Dear Gramma: My eight-year-old daughter Lisa gets upset when her PopPop reminisces about his abusive parents. The details about such things as beatings and his not getting Christmas gifts as a child, cause Lisa distress and she sometimes cries. We feel sad for him, but how can Lisa’s dad and I tell Pop-Pop to be less graphic when sharing what is obviously a difficult issue for him? Lisa’s Mom

Dear Mom: An 8-year-old is too young to understand parental cruelty such as Pop-Pop is sharing. you and Lisa’s father should approach Pop-Pop and ask him not to give so much detail when he talks about his parents. LoCAL PILoT continued from page 26 Dawn Cope of Melbourne, co-wing leader for the Space Coast, has been involved since 2005. “I go to hospitals and talk to doctors and make them aware that it’s available,” she said. “I also go to schools and talk to principals. I don’t think it’s that well known. They don’t even realize it’s out there.” Passengers need to meet financial guidelines, treatments can not be available locally, and passengers must be medically stable and able to climb into a small plane. Pilots donate their time, aircraft and fuel. There is never a charge for the services, but passengers are responsible for overnight accommodations, meals and ground transportation. Trachtman said he is often moved by many of his younger passengers, some of whom pass away later, despite modern medicine. “I hate to sound corny, but when I’m taking kids, I always take a picture. It is really special to be able to help them,’’ he said. For more information, visit angelflightse.org or call 800-352-4256. SL

Are you a dog owner? By Maureen PhilliPS

Water Conservation & Public outreach Manager City of Titusville nationally, it is estimated that 40 percent of all households have at least one dog. If we follow the national trend, that means we have approximately 107,520 dogs residing in Brevard County households. Dogs can produce approximately one pound of waste each day, which can have a significant impact on the water quality of local waterways. The City of Titusville Water Resources’ Conservation Program and Stormwater Utility created the Bag It! Trash It! Program. This program focuses on encouraging Titusville pet owners to pick up after their pets, as well as informing residents of the detrimental effect of pet waste on the environment. Through the program, Titusville distributes doggie waste bag dispensers to local animal shelters, veterinary hospitals and pet owners, as well as installing dog waste stations at Titusville’s Sandpoint Park and Max Brewer bridge. Dog waste is not fertilizer. People think that since dog waste contains some nutrients such as nitrogen, which can enhance plant growth, it does no harm when left on the ground. However, dog waste contains contaminants that are bad for humans, their dogs and the environment. Just like human waste, dog waste contains numerous bacteria and viruses including fecal coliform bacteria, which can cause illness. Dog waste can also harbor parasites such as hookworms

28

DECEMBER 2011 • SENIOR LIFE

and roundworms that can be transmitted to humans and other animals. Dog waste left on the ground can get into waterways through storm water runoff, rain or irrigation water that washes the waste into the curb and then into a storm drain. once in the storm water system, runoff carries the waste with its contaminants into either the Indian River Lagoon or the St. Johns River. Dog waste is detrimental to waterways because the nutrients in it can trigger algae blooms that can block the sunlight needed by aquatic plants. Algae and its subsequent decay also rob the water of oxygen, killing plants, fish and wildlife. Algae blooms can also trigger respiratory issues in people. They also look and smell bad. Just like on the ground, animal waste in a waterway can cause illness in humans who come into physical contact with it or ingest the water. The simple solution to eliminating dog waste in waterways is to Bag It! and then Trash It! Waste needs to be picked up, placed in a bag and then disposed of in the trash. At home, pet owners should keep their yards clean by regularly picking up waste. owners should always keep doggie waste bags handy when walking their dogs. Pet waste should never be disposed of by putting it into storm drains, washing it into curbs, or dumping it into rivers, ponds, lakes or creeks. Titusville water customers can contact the Water Resources’ Conservation office to receive a free, refillable Bag It! health & wellness nervous Dear lynne: i am really nervous about choosing a Medicare Advantage plan for 2012. i’m not happy with the plan i presently have, but am not sure how to proceed choosing the best plan for me. When i do make this decision, do i need to stay with my new plan for all of 2012? —Nervous Nellie Dear nellie: There are some questions you can ask before choosing your Medicare Advantage (MA) plan for 2012 that will help determine the best choice for you: • Will the plan allow me to continue using my present doctors? • If I had to go to the hospital, would my hospital of choice be included in the plan’s network? • Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor to see a specialist? • Do I have coverage when traveling? • Does the plan offer extra benefits like vision, dental, hearing aids and gym membership? • Are the drugs I presently take part of the plan’s formulary and what will they cost? • What is the plan’s monthly premium as well as co-payments for doctor visits, etc.? Comparing the different plans using your answers to these questions will help you arrive at the best choice for you. once your decision has been made, you will have one opportunity in 2012 to disenroll from your MA plan during the Annual Disenrollment Period (ADP). The ADP runs from Jan. 1 through Feb. 14. During this period, you would be able to leave the MA plan you chose and return to original Medicare (Part A and Part B). you would also be able to enroll in a stand alone Prescription Drug Plan at the same time. The

effective date would be the first Ask Lynne of the following month. So if you Lynne Meagher made the change SHINE during January, your effective date for the change would be Feb. 1. you would again be able to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during the next Annual enrollment Period (oct. 15 – Dec. 7, 2012). SHIne counselors, like Lynne, have received indepth training so they can provide unbiased assistance as you make this important decision. A SHIne counselor will not tell what you should do, but will guide you through the comparison process so you can make an educated choice. Call the elder Helpline toll-free at 1-800-96-eLDeR (1-800-963-5337) in Cocoa to contact a SHIne counselor to get an immediate answer about your Medicare or other health insurance coverage, or for information about volunteering with SHIne. SHIne (Serving Health Insurance needs of elders) is an award winning, statewide volunteer based program that provides free, unbiased counseling and information for people on Medicare, their families and caregivers. SHIne is a program of the Florida Department of elder Affairs, administered in partnership with the state’s eleven Area gencies on Aging. Candy is a wonderful, beautifully marked calico, about 3 years old. She was abandoned in a subdivision, where she was afraid and hungry. She adopted a nice family who fed her and kept her warm until they could get her into rescue. She is a smart, aectionate kitty with a curious side. She loves to be petted and sit next to you, purring. Candy is a super sweet cat, who won't give you cavities, just lots of love. VETERANS

SALUTE

Life down under with submariner By Maria SonnenBerG

Barbara Baird has enjoyed 17 honeymoons, all with the same guy. Baird’s husband, Lieutenant Malcolm “Mac” Baird, spent a good chunk of two decades under the sea in Polaris submarines; whenever the sailor returned after months at sea, the couple enjoyed a honeymoon. “We defined a honeymoon as any time we got back together after more than three months of separation,” Mac Baird said. In 1988, after 20 years of service, the navy offered him a promotion, which he politely declined. “I had promised Barbara in 1969, that my career would dictate our lifestyle for not more than the first 20 years of our marriage,” he said. “She remembered.” Baird’s association with subs started in 1965, with a high school summer job helping overhaul subs at the Portsmouth naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. He liked the work and the workers, so in 1968, Baird put college on hold and enlisted in the navy, volunteering for submarine duty. He entered life under the sea, a combination of stale air, strange odors and stealth. “When a nuclear sub leaves port, shuts the hatch and submerges, that is usually the last time you will breathe fresh air for many weeks,” Baird said. “The air you take with you is circulated and recirculated. Back in the days

Cathy’s Dancing Angels high step into the hearts of the community By linDa S. huMPhrey

When Cathy’s Angels dance, you won’t notice wings or halos, but you will see the love of dancing on their smiling faces, all they way down to their high-stepping feet. This fun-loving group wouldn’t think of allowing achy joints or bad weather to keep them home from noon to 2 p.m. each Wednesday when they meet at the Titusville Public Library, 2121 S. Hopkins Ave. to enjoy one another’s company, practice a new routine or prepare for a performance. Mims resident Cathy Johnson started the group in the 1980s at a country western night club in Titusville. From there, the membership has grown to about 50. Johnson said that she felt the area needed this type of social contact and a structured outlet for women who wanted to stay active and contribute to charitable organizations in Brevard. “They are all angels, Johnson said. “They all serve in the community in one or more ways. Jean Fishers said, “I came from england and heard about line dancing. I didn’t know what it was about. That was 15 years ago! now, I do some clogging too. The Dancing Angels perform at area locations including the Searstown Mall, Brevard Alzheimers Centers, local nursing homes, assisted living facilities and senior apartment complexes. “We have so much fun, and it’s exercise and a social outlet, Trish Morris said. While some of the members say they can’t kick as high as they once could, and maybe their hearing is a bit challenged, those little obstacles don’t diminish their love and determination to set aside two hours each week to

Christmas in San Antonio By kathryn leMMon

A

s we gathered speed I tightened the grip on my handbag in trepidation. Glancing down, I saw that the tarmac was moving faster and faster very near our feet. Then we were off the ground and flying. An array of Christmas lights spread before us, shining like welcoming holiday beacons amid the darkness. This must be how Santa Claus feels as he glides over rooftops, I thought. But we were in a helicopter instead of a sleigh. Below us the city of San Antonio looked like a glittering blanket. We wore official head-sets that allowed us to speak to the reindeer — I mean to the pilot. Unlike airplane rides, our takeoff was an adrenaline-pumping experience and one phenomenal introduction to the Christmas season in San Antonio. Children who get to take this journey in the night sky will recall it for a lifetime. We soared close enough to the Tower of the Americas to wave at diners in the rotating restaurant on top, even though they couldn't see us in the dark. Before leaving home, I’d read about the extraordinary annual light show at the University of the Incarnate Word, and it was clearly visible from the sky. The campus was decorated with all white lights that radiated in the darkness. Anyone who ventures out on foot will find plenty of holiday decorations to view at street level. The River Walk lights at night, especially seen from a boat, provide a real sense of romance and atmosphere with landscaping, special lighting and rainbow-colored restau-

just the right amount of adornment against the neutral stone hues. A stone arched bridge next to the outdoor theater and draped with strands of Christmas lights is known as Rosita’s Bridge in honor of the late Rosita Fernandez. Rosita was an actress and entertainer who appeared in movies and performed on the Arneson stage for years to raise funds for charity. The bridge is a favorite photo spot for visitors.

Large old-growth trees give a canopy feeling to the River Walk, making it seem visitors are inside rather than out. Rather than circling the limbs, the decorators position the Christmas light strands down from the center tops of the trees. Small weights on the end of each strand keep them straight and going in the correct direction. This arrangement provided a dramatic difference from typical holiday lights. Since I had traveled here from the blustery single-digit temperatures of Indiana, the daily highs of 60 to 70 degrees were a wonderful change. San Antonio generally has great weather for sightseeing in December, so all I needed was a light jacket for evenings. everywhere we looked, diners were enjoying their food outdoors. By lodging directly on the famous River Walk, I was at the heart of the action and could walk just about anyplace I wanted to go. The Hotel Contessa is one of the newer options directly on the River Walk. Water levels up in St. Johns By eric ciocher

inshore In the Banana and Indian River lagoons watch for the water to get cold. This should be a good time to target redfish and seatrout in the deeper canals. I recommend using live shrimp and slowly retrieved jigs in these deep water spots. Offshore The Pelican Flats and surround- Eric Ciocher ing reefs should stay producing snapper, grouper and kingfish though out the winter months. A productive bait for the reef fish will be frozen sardines. Surf In December, anglers should see the catches of flounder stay in play along the beaches and inlets until around Christmas. The best bait for these flat fish are small finger mullet or mud minnows on the bottom of the inlet. Another alternative would be to cast a small jig tipped with a piece of shrimp and work it slowly on the bottom. Freshwater The water levels are back up in the St. Johns River and the speck fishing should turn on as the first cold fronts return to the Space Coast. As we close out 2011 and head into 2012, I wish everyone great fishing and a happy Holiday season! See you on the water! Retiree helps sell books to pay for library needs By GeorGe White Books and helping the Friends of the Melbourne Public Library have dominated retirement for former systems engineer Scott Shenton of Indialantic, who in 2009, was presented with a national award for his commitment to volunteering. Shenton was awarded The Jefferson Award for Public Service for his more than 2,000-hour effort to organize the semi-annual Friends Book Sales and the creation of an in-library bookstore for library patrons. “When I retired I figured it was pay back time. I came here about five years ago to help with the book sales and I try to expand it however I can. We only have one sale a year now, but our donations are up so we sell a lot in the in-library book store,’’ he said. The Friends sell hardback books for $1, paperbacks for $.50 and CD/DVD’s for $1. “Surprisingly, among the best sellers are VCR tapes,” he said, “and items not sold are donated to charity.” Shenton comes to the Fee Avenue library three times a week, totaling about 12 hours a week. The volunteer award, from which he still wears a special pin, came about as the result of adding up hours from a couple of years, according to Shenton who added that donations can be inconsistent but lately have been strong, completely filling store room shelves with hundreds of boxes of books on the floors. “It always is sort of feast or famine. our biggest problem is storage room because we get so much,’’ he said. While national recognition was nice, Shenton said he’s just glad to be able to help out the important facility in tough economic times.

“I was completely surprised to get that award, but I really enjoyed it. I just like making money for the library. We used to only buy equipment and other needs, but now we’re buying a lot of books because their budget has been cut so much,’’ he said. Shenton’s said that his favorite result of his volunteer work is, “Getting kids to read.’’ For more information about the Friends of the Melbourne Public Library, call 321-952-4514. Greek yogurt craze SPECIaL To SEnIoR LIFE

Q: Why is greek yogurt such a big deal? is it more nutritious than regular yogurt? A: Both regular American-style yogurt and Greek-style yogurt can be very nutritious choices. For some people, the excitement over Greek yogurt relates mainly to its velvety, thick, creamy texture. Greek yogurt is much thicker than regular yogurt because a lot of the liquid whey is strained out. It doesn’t need the pectin or other thickeners found in many yogurts. As for nutritional differences, Greek yogurt is higher in protein than regular yogurt, with six ounces of the nonfat version supplying 15 to 18 grams instead of the 6 or 8 grams you’ll find in regular

yogurt. Straining out the whey makes it lower in carbohydrates, which means less lactose for lactose-intolerant people. However, removing the whey also makes Greek yogurt substantially lower in calcium. nonfat and reduced-fat Greek yogurt usually provides about 170 to 200 milligrams of calcium in six ounces, instead of at least 300 to 350 mg in plain regular yogurt. Some brands may contain more, but check labels if you’re counting on yogurt for calcium. one more caution: the more concentrated yogurt means calories and any fat present get more concentrated, too. Six ounces of plain nonfat Greek yogurt contain about 90 to 100 calories (similar to regular nonfat plain yogurt). But the same continued to page 27

Angel Flight Southeast coordinates local pilots for free air transportation for children and adults with medical or compelling humanitarian needs. From left are co-wing leader Dawn Cope and volunteer pilot, Merritt Island attorney Jerry Trachtman meeting at Trachtman’s aircraft housed in Melbourne.

Without the non-profit organization Angel Flight, patients needing far away medical treatments, or others with compelling humanitarian needs, would have to pay full air fare and might have to do without. Angel Flight Southeast, which covers 3,000 flights annually from Brevard County, is a member of Air Charity network, considered the world’s largest charitable aviation network involving 7,500 pilots. Flights are coordinated for repetitive medical treatment, such as chemotherapy; clinical trials and research into rare diseases; organ transplant candidates, donors or organ or bone marrow transplants; special needs summer camps for children; victims of abuse seeking relocation; familes receiving assistance from the Shriners hospitals, Ronald

McDonald Houses or other similar organizations; and emergency disaster relief. Merritt Island Attorney Jerry Trachtman, who keeps his turboprop airplane at Melbourne International Airport, said, “It’s happy at times and sad at times. We have our laughs and we have our tears with the families.’’ He has done seven flights in 2011. “I knew another pilot who told me about it and I said I like to help those people too. I’m a lucky guy and I know it and the ability to help these people that need help gives me a lot of satisfaction,’’ he said. Trachtman’s Piper Meridian Turboprop has a range of about 1,000 miles on jet fuel. “Usually, because I have the ability to go far, I can save them (Angel Flight) one pilot,’’ he said. continued to page 27
