Bruce and Valerie Cadle married on Oct. 12, 1975, as the sun rose over Indialantic beach. After 35 years of marriage, the two still date every week. “Too often couples drift apart because they aren’t making time for each other,” Bruce said. “By continuing to date, we keep our relationship our top priority.” The Cadles started dating 28 years ago, when Bruce asked Valerie if they could have a scheduled night together every week. With a tight budget and a child at home, the conventional dinner on the town was not an option. Instead, the couple came up with a way to spend an affordable evening together without sacriicing any romance. On Friday nights, after their daughter was tucked in, Bruce would cook Valerie a fancy (but easy) dinner. Date night became a priority that the couple looked forward to all week long. “It has evolved. Now Bruce likes cooking,” Valerie joked. So much, in fact, that Bruce began posting on Facebook what he was cooking for each date night. After receiving great feedback, he was inspired to audition for The Next Food Network Star Youtube Challenge in July of 2010. His video demonstration of how to make a smoked salmon martini landed him a spot as a inalist in the competition. Presort Std U.S. Postage PAID Orlando, FL Permit No. 1979

Local couple shares recipe for a successful marriage

Bruce Cadle, the Date Night Chef, loves cooking for his wife, Valerie Cadle. His new book, Party for Two, features delicious date night recipes. See page 14 for his how-to on Grilled Pina Colada. And though he didn’t win, he didn’t come out empty handed, either. Bruce gained 4,000 friends on Facebook and wrote a book, Party for Two, packed with fun, fancy and easy recipes so that any couple can share in the celebration of date night. Marc Murphy, a judge on Food Network’s Chopped, raves about the book in a review, saying “it’s illed with helpful hints about dating, marriage

and life in general.” “We want to help other people learn to do what we’re doing,” Bruce said. “We want to help people have better marriages.” After watching their mom and dad celebrate date night throughout their childhoods, Bruce and Valerie’s children now have date night with their loved ones. “They understand the importance of spending time

together to strengthen a marriage,” Bruce said. On Oct. 12, 2010, the couple packed a picnic and headed to the beach, celebrating their anniversary in the same spot they were married. Letter from theEDITOR Thank you for your continued readership and support. I hope you’ll enjoy our February issue of VIERA VOICE! This month, I was able to meet two amazing people who attend church in Viera. Bruce and Valerie Cadle have been married for more than 35 years and are an inspiration to anyone striving for a long and happy marriage. I obtained a copy of Bruce’s cookbook, Party for Two, and his recipes are spectacular. More impressive, though, is the commitment Bruce and Valerie have toward each other.

In a country where we’re constantly reminded of an alarmingly high divorce rate, it’s great to see spouses genuinely happy together. Speaking of love, it’s February, and I bet you can’t help but notice that store shelves are packed with red and pink cards and heart-shaped candies. Since Valentine’s Day is approaching, VIERA VOICE Photographer Darrell Woehler asked community members what their favorite romantic spots in town are. See their answers on page 20. Now more than ever, the staff at Bluewater Creative

Group has been busy reaching out to the community. This month, we’re launching our Viera Wetlands Birding Guide. I encourage you to pick one up when you visit the Wetlands! The Birding Guide is a great resource for nature lovers to identify

birds of the area, complete with a checklist and color photos provided by Florida Master Naturalist Charlie Corbeil. We are also hosting a launch party and expo on Feb. 23 for Bluewater Creative Group’s annual publication, the Boomer Senior Guide. The free event will be held at the Melbourne Auditorium from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Details about the event are on page 23. We hope to see you there! On a personal note, I am happy to report that for the irst year in my life, I kept my New Year’s Resolution to eat better and exercise daily. Though it’s only been one month, I’m proud of myself for making what seems to be a lifestyle change. Log on to VIERA VOICE’s Facebook page and let us know if you’ve kept your New Year’s resolution, too! Again, on behalf of the staff at VIERA VOICE, we appreciate your dedication to our newspaper.

Community responds to needs of starving children in Tanzania BY MARTHA MASIELLO

VIERA VOICE Photo by Dr. Ross Clevens

Children eat and drink at the Outreach Africa International Feeding Center in Singida, Tanzania on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010. Dr. Ross Clevens, his wife, Dani, and their two teenage children are joining a team traveling to Tanzania, Africa, this month to perform needed medical care on area children. On Jan. 8, Clevens organized an Outreach International Face of Change event, held at Cocoa Beach High School, where 500 volunteers comprised of students and families packaged more than 102,000 meals. Each meal, which costs an average of 22 cents each, consists of rice, soy, protein supplements, vegetables and vitamins. Funds donated prior to and during the event, and with the assistance of additional charitable resources, pays all expenses related to purchasing the bulk food, packaging, shipping and distribution. The packaged meals have a shelf life of three years. It

generally takes six weeks to three months for the meals to arrive in East Africa. Outreach International operates feeding centers throughout Tanzania and directly controls all aspects of distribution, according to Clevens. “I have personally seen this irsthand on my visits. So, we are certain that the meals reach their intended destination,” Clevens said. During the year, Clevens continues promoting this program by lecturing on the needs not only in Tanzania, but also in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. “On our irst trip in 2010, we saw 1,100 patients at the Singida Regional Hospital in one week. There are numerous family practitioners and pediatric specialties represented on our trip: neonatology, infectious disease, gastrointestinal, hematology,

cardiology and pulmonary. Together, we performed about 100 operations on children including cleft lip, palate, burns and scars. “This life-changing event involved everyone. The needs of these children have touched many people. Obtaining volunteers became contagious. I told one group, who told another group, and so on... resulting in this amazing response,” he said. The next event will be held in September to coincide with Clevens’ planned semi-annual trip to Tanzania in October. Outreach International holds similar drives to beneit Haiti, Dominican Republic, Southwest Florida and Israel. For further information, email info@drclevens.com or visit outreachafrica.org/food.php. Tyler Myers, technical director at the Church at Viera, stands at the video controls used during church services. Plans are for the services to eventually be streamed live on the Internet.

Technologies help spread local churches’ messages BY GEORGE WHITE

It’s been said that faith comes from above, but for most churches and synagogues in Viera, technology and computers are increasingly involved. “We took the opportunity to try something new this Christmas season,” said Tyler Myers, technical director at the Church at Viera (churchatviera.org), where four Christmas Eve services were also broadcast live for overlow crowds in other parts of the building. The church already creates audio podcasts and utilizes high-deinition video cameras and production, but needs additional bandwidth to stream its sermons live online, he said. “The media is new to us and we’re still adapting. We

have some military families and people who travel, so live streaming video online would be a big help,’’ Myers said. Calvary Chapel, with four campuses (Melbourne, Viera, Sebastian and East Orlando) is perhaps the most hightech church in the area. Its website is www.calvaryccm. com. “We do a live feed to each campus of the message by Pastor Mark Balmer, but each campus has live music and its own pastor,” said Director of Communication Melody Glover. Calvary has 10,000 members on all campuses, but also streams live to thousands online including the capability for members to watch the services live on

Fishing is a profession for Suntree resident BY GEORGE WHITE

VIERA VOICE George White

Capt. Eric Ciocher of Suntree uses his boat for guide trips and the taping of a ďŹ shing show called Ultimate Catch.

Viking River Cruises on Sale Now

Suntree resident Capt. Eric Ciocher calls the waters around Brevard County his ofďż˝ice. More than 30 years’ experience in both saltwater and freshwater ďż˝ishing put Ciocher at the top of many regional and national tournaments, leading him to become a professional guide. That led him to his other job as the host of Ultimate Catch, a national cable show. “I just enjoy being outside and I don’t like being behind a desk. And I have a job that lets me do just that,’’ he said. The New Jersey native played several sports in high school but always found time

to wet a line. “I started ďż˝ishing in ponds when I was ďż˝ive years old and I’ve been doing it ever since. I got my captain’s license about 12 years ago and started doing tournaments,’’ he said. Ciocher has also had articles published in magazines like Florida Sport Fishing. Things were going along quite well for Ciocher until the 2004 hurricanes hit the Space Coast. “The hurricanes deďż˝initely set me back. They hit in September and I had 18 trips booked for October that all cancelled at the same time. I had to learn the local waters all over again,’’ he said. It was his background in

marketing and personable approach to guiding that led to his popular show, now in its third year. “I’ve learned that it’s not necessarily how well you ďż˝ish, it’s about how interesting you are to watch,’’ he said. His 178-foot ďż˝lats boat only draws about 5-inches of water, meaning it can easily negotiate local shallow waters, giving clients easy access to redďż˝ish, tarpon, sea trout, snook and ďż˝lounder. He also goes for triple tail in the Atlantic and bass in the St. John’s River. But mostly Ciocher is a family man, enjoying his time with his wife, Diane, and ďż˝iveyear-old son, Joseph, who Continued on page 9

Where can Brevard residents find 5,000 acres for recreational use? The Moccasin Island Tract owned by St. Johns Water Management District just west of the Viera Wetlands off of Wickham Road. It’s not for the faint at heart, or for those needing a concession stand, chairs with umbrellas, or restrooms with running water. Off-road vehicles, including motorcycles, are not permitted. There are two trails, each approximately 2.5 miles, which lead to either the St. Johns River or Lake Winder. “This area is for the hearty person,” Voltalina said. “If you want to leave Melbourne and get out into the marsh of Florida, it’s a pretty quiet place.” Because some of the nearby lands are used during wild game hunting season, Voltalina recommends using the south trail to avoid hunters. “If you go to the north to the viewing tower, you are technically in the hunting area,” Voltalina said. “There’s a brochure that sends people to the south. If you stay on those trails, you won’t encounter anybody who is hunting.” Wildlife lovers can view bald eagles, caracara, ducks, sandhill cranes, deer, hogs, armadillos, gopher tortoises, snakes and raccoons, which are typical Florida wildlife. The nearby Viera Wetlands are optimal for bird watching. According to Florida Wildlife’s website, to get to the Moccasin Island Tract, follow these directions: Go west on Wickham Road to the end like you were going to the Viera Wetlands. Near the entrance to the South Central Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility (Viera Wetlands), turn right (north) onto the dirt road named Powerline Lane, then immediately turn left onto the dirt Wickham Road extension. Paint Brevard purple to raise cancer awareness BY WENDY SCHEURING

This year the Relay for Life teams will “paint Brevard purple” to raise awareness for cancer and to get the community involved. At Heart and Sol OB/GYN, the doctors will donate $5 for each employee on each day they wear purple the week of Feb. 7 to 11. On the Friday of that week, employees will donate $5 to “dress down” or wear jeans to work that day. Dee Parton, co-captain of the Viera/Suntree Relay for Life, makes beaded bracelets of different colors representing different cancer diseases: pink is for breast, purple for survivor, yellow for urinary, brown for colon, black for brain and white for skin, among many others. The bracelets cost $7 and can be purchased at Heart and Sol OB/GYN on Murrell Road. “Because of the nature of the business I’m in, I see patients with breast cancer,” said Parton, who is the marketing director at Heart and Sol OB/GYN and a medical assistant as well. “I lost a dear friend to cancer last August.” A meeting for those needing more information about Relay for Life or wanting to start a team will take place Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at Viera High School. A karaoke contest will be held on Feb. 25 at Linda’s Lounge at the Best Western on S.R. 520 for an entry fee of $10. Tickets for drawings will also be available. There will be 14 relays taking place throughout Brevard County during the months of March to May, one of which will take place May 6 and 7 at Viera High School. “We have 45 teams,” said Parton of the Suntree-Viera Relay for Life. The eighteenhour event will take place May 7 and 8 at Viera High School. The first lap is called the “survivor lap,” where cancer survivors are honored as they walk the first lap amidst the cheers of the crowd. A free dinner from Outback Steak House is of-

fered to all cancer survivors who participate. The event will be a carnival theme with food, games, entertainment and singing. The Mr. Relay contest will take place at 11 p.m., where the men dress as women, vying to get the most votes. As a special tribute to those who have lost their battle to cancer, a luminaria ceremony with a slideshow presentation will take place at 9:30 p.m. Relay for Life is still looking for sponsors. Wrap up

SPORTS

Viera High soccer player designs his future On the soccer ield, or off, Sebastian Walker is always looking for ways to be creative. To that end, the Viera High senior center back has something brewing that could turn into a career once his soccer playing days are over. “I have my own clothing company that I’ve started up,” Walker said. “That’s something I’d like to see grow and progress in the future.” Walker, who got the idea about a year-and-ahalf ago, calls his business Uncommon Clothing. He doesn’t have a website - not yet, anyway - but said he has already sold all 30 T-shirts from his irst design mostly through word of mouth. “It was a cloud and on the back it had this design of a circle that said, ‘Search for the new and strive for the different,’” Walker said of the shirt’s design.

BY CARL KOTALA

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Viera High senior Sebastian Walker is a center back and one of three team captains of the Hawks. He has also started his own clothing company.

Though he would like to see his clothing company expand some day, the 17-yearold co-captain of the Hawks still has plenty of soccer in his future. “When I took the team over, I didn’t know a lot about

many of the lads, but speaking to coaches in the area, they told me he was one to take charge on the ield and off the ield as well,” irstyear Viera coach Martin Peat said. “He’s the sort of player that you know, in the direction he’s going, that he’s going to go on to the next level.” Indeed, Walker has drawn interest from colleges like Florida Tech, Rollins, USF and FAU and could very well ind himself playing collegiate soccer next season. In the meantime, Walker is hoping he and fellow captains Justin Szymkoviak and Blaine Fisher can lead the Hawks to a strong inish. The Hawks, who lost to Melbourne High in the region semiinals, would like to take their season at least one step further. To do that will require solid play, and a lot of leadership - and that’s just ine with Walker, a four-year varsity player who likes the idea of being a team leader. VV

Viera wrestlers poised to make history BY CARL KOTALA

This season may be a historic one for the Viera High wrestling team on several fronts. As the regular season winds down, the Hawks are focused on trying to win what would be the school’s irst Cape Coast Conference championship. But that’s not all. The Hawks’ Ty Cartmell, in particular, is looking to become the irst Viera High wrestler to win a state title. It all started Jan. 28-29, when the Hawks hosted the CCC tournament. The district tournament is set for Feb. 3 at Melbourne High, followed by the regionals on Feb. 1112 at Jensen Beach and, of

12

course, the state tournament Feb. 18-19 in Lakeland. Viera coach Jim Gentile has not only been trying to get his team ready for the gauntlet its about to face, he’s also been reminding them of the opportunities that lie ahead of them. “That’s what I’m trying to instill in them -- have fun doing it, but look into the future,” Gentile said. “This is a chance to make history.” As much as winning a CCC title would thrill the Hawks, their ultimate focus is to qualify as many wrestlers to the state tournament as possible. Eight would be great. Anything less than ive would

be disappointing. Those who are considered to have the best chance to get there include Chad Wise (119); Hunter Waite (125); Brandon Searle (130); Dalton Rennie (140); Dustin Waite (145); Jonathan Kenney (152); Jeff Walker (160) and Ty Cartmell (189). Cartmell, who inished fourth at state last year, has had an exceptional season. “He’s training a lot harder this year than he was last year, I think, because of two reasons,” Gentile said. “One, he’s got his sights set on the state championship. Two, he’s a senior, so this is his last chance.” VV

Viera’s lacrosse team gets competition in Brevard BY CARL KOTALA

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Senior cocaptains Billy Bierlein (yellow gloves) and Connor Payne (front) work against each other during a practice drill at Viera High School on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011. The Viera High club team is now in its fifth season.

For the past four seasons, they’ve been the only high school lacrosse club team in Brevard County. This year, the Viera Hawks are getting some company. Satellite and Merritt Island High will both have club teams playing at the varsity level, while West Shore and Eau Gallie are getting things started with junior varsity programs. “We’re really excited about that,” Viera Coach Mark Lorusso said. “We’ve been waiting for this moment. We’ve been traveling a lot the last few years to try to ind teams to play, and now they’re here.” The Hawks opened its season Jan. 31 at home against Satellite. The team is loaded with experience and should be contenders in District 9 of the Interscholastic Associates Lacrosse League. Senior co-captains Connor Payne, Billy Bierlein and Kevin Rodier, plus seniors Michael Seppa and Eric Reinhardt, will give Viera

plenty of experience to rely on in what could be a breakout year. “It’s a veteran group and given the level of lacrosse we’re starting to play here, I think we really have an opportunity to have a strong season,” Lorusso said. “These guys worked all summer. They’re really dedicated to what we do here and representing their school and their community.” With roughly 70 players in this year’s program, everything appears to be following Lorusso’s plan when he took over four years ago. His irst goal was to build up the varsity, which he has. Next, he wanted to focus on the JV level, which had 40 players come out this season. “The next phase of the plan is to really start building up the youth levels around here and that’s very much in progress right now,” Lorusso said. “That’s really what’s going to take us to the next level, getting kids to start at a young age.” VV

BCC honors World-Series winning Giants manager BY CARL KOTALA

Bruce Bochy had celebrated winning a World Series championship as the manager of the San Francisco Giants and was part of a downtown parade that drew more than a million fans to celebrate. But there was nothing quite like the emotion of coming home to where his baseball career all started, and seeing a sign unveiled naming the Brevard Community College ield in his honor. “There’s a lot of emotions going through me,” said Bochy, moments after the ceremony. “I’m overwhelmed with everything that’s happened. It was an incredible year in 2010 and to open 2011 with this special day means so much to me. I’m honored and humbled. To see old friends, and to be back here in Brevard … it’s a special day. It’s a day I’ll never forget.” A graduate of Melbourne High School and an AllAmerican catcher on the 1975 BCC team that won the state championship, Bochy was honored on Jan. 14 with

This is a perfect Valentine’s dessert. It is super easy to make and the sweetness of the caramelized pineapple, the tartness of the lime, the rich nutty lavor of the toasted coconut and the cool ice cream will make for the perfect ending to your Date Night. • 2 pineapple slices, core removed • one lime, juiced • vanilla ice cream (coconut ice cream is great too, but it’s hard to ind) • ¼ cup coconut lakes Start by spreading the coconut in a non-greased pan on low heat. Toasting the coconut releases the oils and really brings out the lavor. Watch it closely and remove from the heat once the coconut begins to turn brown. Place the slices of pineapple directly on your medium-hot grill or grill pan for two minutes. Carefully turn the slices a quarter turn to get nice hatch marks; continue cooking for two more minutes. Flip the pineapple over and cook for three minutes. Place the pineapple in the center of a bowl or plate. Drizzle lime juice over the pineapple. Add a generous scoop of ice cream in the center of the pineapple and top with toasted coconut. -Contributed by Bruce Cadle. To read more, flip to page 1.

VHS sports recaps BY CARL KOTALA

Hawks girls soccer

Viera won its district semiinal 2-0 over Palm Bay behind two goals from Jackie Stengel, setting up a district inals rematch with Melbourne, which had won 70 consecutive games. By reaching the district inal, Viera (14-2-1) qualiied for the regional playoffs. Stengel had 43 regular-season goals and 19 assists. Natalie Vaupel and Olivia Thompson were next with 11 goals each. Maddy Nagy scored nine goals. Goalkeeper Sami Lewin allowed six goals and had seven shutouts.

Hawks boys soccer

The Hawks inished the regular season with an 8-5-3 record and were scheduled to take on Palm Bay in the opening round of district play. Senior Alan Jackson led the Viera team in scoring with nine goals followed closely by senior Justin Szymkoviak. Other seniors

16

on the roster included Dennis Hooper, Blaine Fisher, Chris Schilling, Sebastian Walker, Damian Archdale, Scott Wright, Joe McDowell and Kevin Montes. Freshmen Matt Bolles, Max Mercer and Brandon Sebree gained valuable experience.

Hawks wrestling

It’s all about the postseason for the Hawks as they gear up for the Cape Coast Conference, district, regional and state tournaments. Leading the way were are state championship contenders Ty Cartmell (34-1) at 189 pounds; Jeff Walker (36-2) at 160 pounds; Jonathan Kenney (29-4) at 152 pounds; Dustin Waite (27-5) at 145 pounds; Dalton Rennie (27-7) at 140 pounds; Brandon Searle (29-5) at 130 pounds; Hunter Waite (324) at 125 pounds and Chad Wise (20-5) at 119 pounds.

Hawks girls basketball

At 16-1, the Hawks have earned the No. 1 seed in the district tournament, which automatically qualiies them

for the regional playoffs. With a roster reduced to eight players, everyone is seeing plenty of action. Leading the way is senior K.K. Wilson with help from juniors Maggie Davis, Katie Muller, Adrienne McKenzie and Mariah Deckard. Freshmen Dee Anderson and Ro Hayes aren’t playing like rookies. They’ve added some spark to the Hawks’ up-tempo offense and pressure defense.

Hawks boys basketball

A free throw with 44 seconds remaining in a Jan. 18 game against Cocoa put senior forward Corbin Jackson into the Viera history books. He will forever be known as the irst player in Viera basketball history to score 1,000 points. Through 12 games, Jackson was averaging 14.8 points and 10.3 rebounds. Deonte Hearns was actually leading the team in scoring at 16.4 points and was grabbing 8.5 boards a game. Daniel Mumford was averaging 9.6 points. VV

Dr. Saladino Says....

Top golf courses spanning from Palm City to Viera are not just for retirees, tourists or locals working on the game. They are now home sites for a new junior golf competition team. After recognizing that golf is missing in today’s youth, Golf Pro Roger Van Dyke decided to do something about it and formed the Atlantic Junior Golf Team Series, a product of the Indian River Golf Foundation (IRGF) Players Club. “Young people aren’t coming to the game like they used to,” Van Dyke said. “So we’re trying to satisfy a lot of needs. One of the needs is programming.” After a focus group met last November, Van Dyke and others realized the importance and lack of affordable golf competition for young players. “We noticed that soccer has travel, we noticed that little league baseball has travel baseball. Well now the IRGF has what is called

a travel golf team,” Van Dyke said. Soon after the initial discussion, Van Dyke met with golf clubs to introduce the series and make competition arrangements at each course - including Duran Golf Club and Suntree Country Club. “This is a program that will expand the opportunities for our young golfers to not only play, but to compete and develop relationships with others with a like interest in golf,” said David Tomczak, general manager of Duran Golf Club. “After listening to Roger’s vision and plan, I wanted to get involved to have the juniors of this area have the opportunity to participate and have fun.” Van Dyke was able to choose which courses would enhance the junior golfers game. “To have clubs with those name recognitions—that gets the attention of these young players,” Van Dyke said. As the series begins, Van Dyke will create the path to

Robert Lebrón

After spending ive minutes with artist Robert Lebron, it is apparent that the American impressionist oil painter has a wealth of experiences to share. But it is in his paintings that you’ll ind the artist also has a brilliant imagination. Best known for executing his paintings with a palette knife, Lebron’s pieces are inspired by classic stories such as Robin Hood and Sherlock Holmes, as well as scenes throughout the world. His art is displayed in various U.S. museums, and his paintings have been recognized by National Geographic and Cartier. Spotting a Lebron original is easy, aside from looking for the obvious craftsmanship. Each of his paintings contains his logo, a small dog inspired by the comic strip “Dickie Dare.” When asked how long he has been painting, he answered, “Successfully? For more than 50 years, though I’ve been drawing since I was six years old.”

22

Special

SOMEONE

Lebron still paints every day and teaches classes at the Art Gallery of Viera. To contact him, call 321-794-8157 and ask to speak with “Bob.” What do you draw inspiration from? History. I get a lot of my ideas from history, and also classical stories like Pinocchio, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Robin Hood. What do you do to lift your spirits when you are down? I keep on painting to ight my way through it.

What is the most memorable moment of your lifetime? After ive years of academics, I took a freighter to Europe for $135. We sailed from New York City to Africa, and the voyage took 10 days. When we got to Europe, I rented a mansion in Spain with two others for $160 per month. It had 27 rooms and an elevator. I spent almost a year in Spain, where I developed my technique with the palette knife. What artist do you look up to? Johannes Vermeer, a true master of light. Who is a ictional character you would like to be? James Bond. What one thing about you would surprise casual acquaintances? That I’m sarcastic. Some people don’t pick up on that right away. VV

Viera woman gives up career to pursue love Shirlee Fender had a comfortable job working as a registered stockbroker in Viera, but she gave up inancial stability more than a year ago to pursue her love- writing. Now, she is a full-time writer, working from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from her home. With an organized schedule and her passion driving her, Fender was able to complete two novels within a year and is currently co-authoring a cookbook with her husband. Her irst book, Rail Killers, was inspired by Mike Rogers, a professional skateboarder and two-time cancer survivor from Cocoa Beach. Her second book, Trappings, is about a woman who quits her job just as she is about to climb the corporate ladder. To order Fender’s books, visit Lulu.com. VV

Make injury prevention part of your game plan. Playing sports is a great way to stay in shape. But with all physical activity, injuries can occur. Being aware and prepared is the best way to prevent sports-related injuries, which is why Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Kohl’s teamed up to create Play It Forward, a sports medicine education and injury prevention program. From teaching kids, coaches and parents about sports safety, to providing information, tips and other free resources, the Play It Forward program helps Central Florida’s young athletes stay healthy and in the game. Cara Philpot Cara Philpot jumped into the banking industry at a young age, identifying it as her career choice while she was in high school. Her irst banking job was as a teller at First National Bank of Brevard, a locally owned and operated six-branch bank in Merritt Island. After being promoted from teller, she worked her way up in the ranks, gaining knowledge and experience in every department along the way. Philpot says she prefers working in community banks because her skill set its the responsiveness and personal attention that they strive to provide. She now serves as vice president and branch manager of Seacoast National Bank, the largest community bank in Florida. Do you have a moneysaving tip you can offer in these harsh economic times? Staying in and cooking at home more often, as an alternative to eating out at restaurants, is a great way to save. Besides the savings, you’ll tend to eat a healthier diet, and you’ll spend more

quality time with your family and friends as you cook and eat together.

What made you pursue an occupation in the ield you are in? I have always loved talking to and learning about people, and then using that knowledge to help them achieve their goals, whether business or personal. I am always fascinated by the life stories that my clients share. Also, I have always loved numbers (my major was accounting), so banking was a natural it for me.

What is your can’t-livewithout technology? Speaking both personally and professionally, I would have to say that my iPhone is an indispensable tool. It keeps me connected to my clients and colleagues. I don’t know what I would do without it! What is your dream job? I am a frustrated interior decorator on the inside, but banking has been pretty fulilling. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your ield? I would think this advice

would ring true in any industry: Stay educated within your industry and in the sectors that you serve. In regards to banking speciically, the industry is constantly evolving its technologies, policies and procedures, and it is important to keep pace with the change. How do you leave a lasting impression on a potential client? I make every attempt to follow-up with potential new clients by sending a personal note thanking them for their time. I want to make sure that each prospect knows how much I sincerely appreciate time taken from busy schedules to meet with me. Continued on page 26

Prominent Pro Continued from page 25 What is your recipe for success? You have to enjoy what you do in order to truly excel at it. I receive great satisfaction when I am able to help clients achieve goals. It is that feeling of fulillment that makes me strive to succeed more and more each day. What characteristics make an employee valuable? Without a doubt, I would have to say that focus and engagement are invaluable traits in an employee. When each member of a team is focused and engaged, great things are bound to happen. What does customer service mean to you? As is the case in any service industry, it is the most important aspect of what we do. Our clients’ perception of us is our reality, so it is important to keep that perception in a positive light. It all comes down to the most simple of

grade school principles; treat and speak with others as you would wish to be treated or spoken to. What is your favorite aspect of your job? When someone, either a customer or an associate, tells me that I have helped them in some way. It is great being part of an organization that keeps the focus on helping people. How important do you ind education in today’s business world? Education is imperative to success in the business world. We cannot help others with that which we do not know ourselves. VV Do you know someone who is a prominent professional? Please email meagan@vieravoice.com with information about outstanding business representatives in the Viera/Suntree area.

Jackie Stengel Continued from page 10 rather than try to ram-rod through them.” Though the sisters are competitive with each other, they’re so close that they talk nearly every day. Still, Jackie would like to be known for her own game. “It’s very important to me, because people ask me, ‘Are you as good as your sister?’ and some day I want to be like, ‘Yeah. I’m as good as her, or maybe even better,’” Jackie said. “I made my own path for myself.” With two more years to play after this one, the legacy Jackie Stengel will leave is still unknown. But if she has her way, she will be another tough act to follow. VV

Parting Shot by Charlie Corbeil A sweet event benefits the

Brevard Achievement Center BY ANGELA SMITH

Hooded Merganser The hooded merganser is the smallest and the most attractive of the three merganser species located in North America. This duck is spectacularly detailed, as if painted with a fine brush. Its impressive crest spreads and closes like a fan. When the crest is erect, it resembles a hood— thus the name. As is prevalent in nature, the male is more stunning than the female, especially during the breeding season when his plumage is in full display. Consequently, the drake’s elegance plus his soft croak help him entice a potential mate. The merganser’s long, narrow, serrated bill and enhanced underwater vision enable it to feed on fish, aquatic insects and

Coffee and chocolate lovers will gather at the end of this month at the Holiday Inn Viera Conference Center, where they’ll treat themselves with an abundance of fresh chocolate goodies and cups of Joe. Behind this sweet and energizing affair is the sixth annual Coffee and Chocolate fundraising event for the Brevard Achievement Center (BAC). The BAC hosts the function to benefit its mission of providing life-changing services to people with disabilities by helping them find employment and by providing adult day training onsite at its facility in Rockledge. According to Robert Gramolini, employment services manager at the BAC, due to the economy and state-wide budget cuts, fundraising events keep important programs going, like the organization’s one-onone job coach and employment services program. “Typically this program loses money every year, so this helps offset some of that loss,” Gramolini said. The event will bring numerous businesses across the county, such as Starbucks and The Melting Pot, all under one roof, so

The event will host a variety of entertainment, including comedian and magician Erick Olson, who recently performed on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, as well as a silent auction of more than 100 gift baskets full of weekend getaways and gift certificates. The event involves more than 30 volunteers inside and outside the BAC, including students from Viera High School’s Student Government Association (SGA) who have donated money to help the BAC curricular and fundraising programs, including this year’s Coffee and Chocolate function. “Understanding the importance of giving back, the SGA does what it can to aid its community in whatever way possible,” said Chris Spinale, SGA advisor. “The SGA believes firmly in the services the BAC provides to people with disabilities and is committed to helping when and where it can.” During the past five years, averaging 400 attendees, the event has raised more than $200,000, while keeping the entry cost the same: $30 in advance and $35 at the door. This year’s Coffee and Chocolate fundraising event for the Brevard Achievement
