There are some staples — you’ve got to do Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash — but this year we’ve added Garth Brooks and Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood. And doing those songs are a lot of fun.” As the narrator, Paoletti will engage the audience with a few tidbits about each upcoming performer the band will be about to cover, finally revealing who it is as the song is about to begin. Suntree minister ready to strengthen ties that bind “It doesn’t matter whether it’s just one or 20, it’s going to be very special”

By maria Sonnenberg

Ordained minister Gus Kruse believes zoos are perfect spots to enhance romance and he’s ready to help couples renew their vows at the Senior Safari & Wellness Walkabout and Boomer Guide Expo Friday, Feb. 7 at the Brevard Zoo. “I have a thing about zoos and dates,” Kruse said. “I think they’re great for couples, because they bring out the kid in all of us.” “I’ve never done a recommitment ceremony before, but I’m ready for as many couples as we get,” he said. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s just one or 20, it’s going to be very special.” Kruse takes his responsibilities very seriously. He once had an opportunity to do weddings on a daily basis, but eschewed the revolving door approach that the job entailed. “I want people to understand the decision they are making,” he said. Kruse knows firsthand the heartbreak of divorce. His parents separated when he was just 5 years old. In 1998, he, too, went through a divorce, despite his best efforts. A member of the Church of the Avenue, Kruse has been an ordained minister since 1996, primarily focusing on evangelism and mission work. “My family has traveled to approximately 19 different countries with our mission

When he could raise the money, he purchased gifts for the clients who came to eat on Christmas Day, consulting with the director, John Farrell, as to the most pressing needs. Suntree residents have a year of events planned ahead, and now the volunteers who run them are looking for more neighbors to work elbow to elbow with them. The Suntree Master Homeowners Association Parks and Recreation Committee invites anyone who wants to help fuel the fun to join them at the next meeting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the SMHA offices at 7550 Spyglass Hill Road. Events, held at Jack Mahon Park at that location, can draw more than 2,000 people. The calendar so far includes: • A food truck event with live entertainment Saturday, March 22. These events typically draw 10 to 12 food trucks and draw from across the county via social media. Cool temperatures are expected to sideline the popular Movies in the Park until warmer months. • The annual Easter egg hunt Saturday, April 19, which may include food and entertainment this year. While not a Parks and Rec event, another official Suntree event planned in April includes the Spirit of Suntree Spring Fling Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5. The route will begin in front of Suntree Elementary School on Jordan Blass Drive, head southwest down St. Andrews Boulevard, then turn north on Interlachen Road. The parade will end at

In last year’s Spirit of Suntree Spring Fling Parade, Suntree SMHA staff, residents and the Easter Bunny take to a golf cart float to promote the annual Easter Egg Hunt, which this year is slated for April 19 at Jack Mahon Park on Spyglass Hill Road. Interlachen Park with food and live entertainment by the band Oceans. • A patriotic classical concert punctuated by live cannon booms in the afternoon Saturday, May 17, followed by a similarly themed, classic movie after dark. A wine and craft beer tasting may be added to the lineup. • June and July will be skipped due to the hot weather and because many families take their vacations when children are out of school. • Movies in the Park will return post-summer as early as Saturday, Aug. 16. There will definitely be a food truck event on this day. As with all movie nights, a family festival starts two hours before the movie, which starts 20 minutes after sunset.

• Oktoberfest returns the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 27, with a Halloween-themed movie at dark. Haunted hayrides were popular last year, but this year for first time ever, the park pavilion will be converted into a haunted house that is expected to be extravagantly horror-fied and even more popular. • November will be eventless, but on Saturday, Dec. 6, Santa will be coming to town via hayride, with a Christmasthemed movie at dark. • January’s event will feature a Saturday community rummage sale and farmers market with food available and live entertainment likely added. The committee’s goal is to keep all the fun free with sponsorships from local businesses.

Real estate agents and associations work together Real estate agents and associations of any kind can be a great asset to each other. Whether you live in a condo, HOA, mobile home, co-op, etc., you probably purchased through a real estate agent. I always enjoy receiving phone calls from real estate agents asking questions. It means the seller is working with a professional, proactive agent. The calls inquire about association rules, amenities and restrictions. Some examples of questions are — “Is your association an over-55 community?” “Are pickup trucks allowed?” “Is board approval required?” “How do we get access to the clubhouse?” Over the years, I have heard Community Association Managers say

Association Living Frank Kneiser, CMCA, AMS, PCAM

they think real estate agents are the bane of their life. It’s important for both parties to realize they are in the same business. Cooperating with each other results in better new owners and content real estate agents. Sometimes, a new owner will say to me “Well, the real estate agent told me….” This is often because a new owner is unaware of covenants or rules. While the new owner has a responsibility to be an informed buyer, it’s much better when a real estate agent explains the obligations of the respective association. One of the most frequent issues I hear from Community Association Managers is last minute requests for estoppel letters

Travel By Ginny presents…

and copies of association documents. Normally, the closing date is set allowing plenty of time for all parties to do their homework. At the same time, associations need to be prepared to release accurate information in a timely fashion. Associations and real estate agents working together as a team, results in happier agents and informed quality association owners. It’s important to point out that Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his community association manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@ suntreeflorida.com. VV

If you’re a car enthusiast, mark March 1 down on your calendar. That’s when the Antique Automobile Club of Cape Canaveral will put on its annual “Celebration of Cars” event at Wickham Park. Admission for the event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., is free to the public. Chairman Bob Carpenter said there could be as many as 250 cars at the show. It will also mark the celebration of the Cape Canaveral-based club’s 50th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the Mustang. The Space Coast Mustang Club will be on hand and invitations have been made to a number of Mustang clubs throughout Central Florida.

Linda Brayer

There’s a perfect home for everyone – let me help you find yours!

“It should be a nice (day),” Carpenter said. “The public will have a chance to see some of the old cars, because we’ve got the Model T and the Model A, and then cars from later on, like the ’30s and ’40s and ’50s. And of course, there will be the older Mustangs and the newer Mustangs.” The event is returning to Wickham Park after being held at Burton Park for the past 12 years. Carpenter said the move was made, in part, to make the show more centrally located for the public. It also allows organizers to bring in arts and crafts vendors to go with the flea market vendors, food vendors and a kid’s corner. Attendees will get to vote for the top 25 cars at the show. A youth group will

also vote on the top five cars from the Antique Automobile Club of Cape Canaveral, which is a regional branch of the national group based in Hershey, Pa. Proceeds from the March 1 show will benefit the South Brevard Sharing Center. The center will have a truck at Wickham Park and will accept donations of canned goods, items for its thrift shop, or of course, monetary donations. “They’re a good group of people,” Carpenter said. “They help a lot of people in Brevard County. Our donations will go to them and they’re going to use that money toward the school lunch program in the Brevard elementary schools.” VV

No place like … woods? Future veteran pays it forward By Linda Wiggins

Cory Fairchild said he has all that he needs and more, so when the Viera High School student heard of a homeless veteran and her family with young children living in the woods, the future Air Force career vet and current JROTC cadet decided to pitch in. He tracked down the family and began cooking meals for them at their campsite and entertaining the boys age 3 and 9, roping in a friend or family member to help him. It started with making them a Christmas meal complete with a turkey purchased from Walmart that Cory, 17, somehow managed to cook and smoke over a fire. Since then, it’s been burgers, hot dogs, chicken. Sometimes it’s a pizza brought in if he’s tired from studies, extra-curricular activities and a part-time job. “They have offered to pay us back for some of the food we bought them, but we refused,” Cory said. “We go on Saturdays and Sundays when we can, play

with the kids, or just hang out with them so the parents can have some time to themselves.” The extended hand of friendship is an inspiration and relief, Haley said. A veteran and later reservist with the U.S. Army, she said she received an honorable discharge just before deploying to the Middle East due to the chronic illness of her youngest boy, Blade, 3. Her husband, Scott, had been the spouse who waited, caring also for Blade’s brother Kane, 9. They moved to Brevard from Ohio two weeks before Thanksgiving in hopes a family member could help them, but it didn’t pan out. “It’s really hard trying to make this seem like a fun adventure for the children, like a camping trip that never ends, when it’s anything but fun for the adults,” said Haley, who asked that the family’s last name not be used to prevent the children’s peers from possibly singling them out for bullying. Like many other families with young children living in the woods, they are also

Cory Fairchild, center, reads to Kane, left, and Blade, to give their harried parents, Haley and Scott, foreground, some time to bond. afraid their children might be taken from them. “Along comes this young person who wants to help, and …. well,” she said, regaining composure, “it just takes a lot off our shoulders and we don’t feel so alone.” Haley had just finished her last shift at a restaurant that closed that week. She said she is now looking for another job as a waitress or in hotel housekeeping, “anything, anything at all.” Scott said he is seeking a job in fabrication or construction, or, like Haley, anything, anything at all. Cory is hoping to raise enough money to purchase a used popup camper from Craigslist to get the family up off the ground and to offer more protection from the elements than their tarp-covered tent provides. They have a propane heater for when temperatures dip, but comforts other than that are meager. Cory, whose father, Scott, is a vet who helps other vets, first joined the family culture of outreach to those less fortunate by helping out at His Place Ministries, which serves the homeless in downtown Melbourne and provides a cold-night shelter. Cory’s mother, Sally, champions many community causes. “Once I saw them, I saw they could use a lot more help than any of them were letting on,”

Haley washes Blade’s hands with shampoo under a rare runningwater faucet, the task of the keeping boys clean while living out of doors a tall one. Cory said. “When you see the situation of people who live like this, especially when children are involved, it is impossible to not try to help however you can. It’s not a good life, even though they might make it seem like they are doing great. You can see there isn’t that sense of sanctuary that comes from having their own place,” He vowed to help the veteran family in the woods as long as they continue to allow him. “They are not really willing to accept charity, but they’ve been willing to accept our hand up in

Zoo’s Florida backdrop to be fair game for historic Highwaymen landscape artist By linda Wiggins

Robert “R.L.” Lewis, Jr. of Cocoa is among the 26 Highwaymen artists inducted in the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004 for the unique Florida landscape paintings dating back to the 1960s. Once looked down upon during segregation in the South, the works of the AfricanAmerican artists have become the darlings of the art world across the country and the globe. While his paintings command top dollar, and while his live, in-person painting exhibitions draw growing, over-capacity crowds, one side result of the growing fuss leaves Lewis increasingly puzzled. “I use aluminum foil over a palette board to hold my paints while I work. That way, I can just pull it off and toss when I’m done,” Lewis said to a standingroom-only crowd at the Mims-Scottsmoor Library Jan. 23. Attendees craned their necks to better hear of his favorite types and styles of brushes, paints and techniques or just get a better glimpse of the living legend. “But now, people come up and see the crumpled foil, or something I’ve cleaned my hands with and say, ‘I want to buy that!’ ” From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7 at Senior Safari & Wellness Walkabout at the Brevard Zoo, the public

Holy Trinity baseball has new coach, fresh outlook

of a season as we would have hoped last year,” senior Devon Pishalski said. “With the new coaching staff and the new talent we brought in, I think everybody’s taking a fresh look. Everybody wants to make a point.” Teams would be wise not

While the Tigers still have a young roster, new coach Loren McClanahan pointed out it’s not completely devoid of experience. “We’re extremely young, but our youth is talented,” McClanahan said. “And actually our youth has some experience now, too. Some of these ninth graders that will be starting for us, this will be their third year starting on the varsity level. Local student a goalie on top-ranked youth hockey team By Mike Gaffey

When Jacob Fowler and the Florida Alliance all-star hockey club take the ice in tournaments up North, crowd reaction often is a mix of surprise and skepticism. But after another dominating win by the club, audience response to the Sunshine State team is far different. “They’re shocked,” Jacob said. A Melbourne third grader, Jacob, 9, is goaltender for the Florida Alliance Blue Team, currently the top-ranked ice hockey squad of 9-year-olds in the country. The club went unbeaten during a tournament Jan. 2 through 5 in Michigan. It was the third tournament for Fowler — the club’s only player from Brevard County — and his teammates during the past few months. “They played the best teams from Canada, Michigan, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Minnesota, pretty much from everywhere and they finished undefeated,” said Fowler’s father, Jay. “They tied once in a tournament. They won every tournament they went to and they’re ranked the No. 1 team in the nation, all these Florida kids. It’s amazing.” Jacob fell in love with hockey while watching his father play in men’s leagues at the Space Coast Iceplex. He received a pair of roller skates at age 2. “He’d go around the house

Jacob started taking skating lessons at the Iceplex at age 3 and soon yearned to learn to play hockey, also taught to youngsters there. He wore his parents down. “I told my wife I’m done with having to hear about how he wants to go play hockey and let’s put him in the Learn to Play Hockey class,” Jay Fowler said. “So he started that class at maybe 3 ½, playing in recreational leagues.” Jacob got his first shot at playing goalie at age 5 after

being asked to play in a house league for an older age group. “Once I tried on the Iceplex goalie gear I just loved playing,” he said. His dad provided his own goalie gear soon afterward. Advancing to AA status, a level for top players, Jacob and his parents turned to the Orlando area, where he practices with the Orlando Jr. Knights club Monday and Thursday evenings at the RDV Sportsplex in Maitland. In spring 2013, Jacob was chosen as goalie for the AAA Team Zoom Tan for children born in 2004, which advanced to tournament finals in Chicago

An invitation to play goalie for the Florida Alliance 10-and-under AAA club followed in the fall. With the Florida Alliance season over, Jacob plans to play league games and tournaments with the Jr. Knights through February, then spring hockey

starting in March. This summer, he hopes to play in Edmonton for Team Minnesota at the 25th annual Brick Invitational Super Novice Hockey Tournament, a competition his father compares to the Little League World Series. Several National Hockey League stars played in the tournament as kids. VV

Sports Notebook By Carl Kotala

Breakthrough season helped Hawks’ confidence By Carl Kotala

HOLY TRINITY BOYS BASKETBALL With four regular-season games to go until the postseason, Holy Trinity coach Steve Henderson’s Tigers were sporting an impressive 19-2 record and were looking like a team with a good chance to go deep into the playoffs, given their fast-paced style that drives opponents crazy. Jace Hogan was averaging a double-double for Holy Trinity, scoring 27.1 points and grabbing 14 rebounds per game. Marcus Barham was averaging 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists per contest.

Last year’s breakthrough season has done wonders for the Viera High baseball team. “It’s definitely given us confidence,” senior lefthanded pitcher Kyle Hintz said. “We know what we can do. We know our strengths. I think we have a lot of faith. We really believe we can do it. VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

The Holy Trinity softball team may have a lot of young players, but they have plenty of varsity experience

Young Tigers could have plenty of bite in 2014 By Carl Kotala

Calling the Holy Trinity softball team young and inexperienced does not paint a true picture of what kind of club the Tigers will have this season. Sure, there is only one senior. And yes, there will be a few girls who are new to the sport. But take freshman Talia Douglas. She’s been playing varsity softball since the sixth grade, and is already drawing attention from college scouts. There is also plenty of experience, both on the high school and travel ball level, in players like Kelly O’Neil, third baseman Casey Cohen and other key returners such as catcher Suzannah Boyle and pitcher Allison Roach. The only senior is Maddy Fink. “(I’m) pretty optimistic about it,” O’Neil said. ”We return every single infielder from last season. I’d say we’re pretty unstoppable there. (And) we’ve got some pretty good outfielders coming out.” The Tigers were waiting on nine more players — five from soccer and four from basketball — to join the team once their

respective winter sports seasons are over. What some of them will lack in experience, they will make up for in athleticism. So while the Tigers may be a young team, they will hardly be devoid of talent. “I’ve got a lot of young kids who have never played before who are showing great potential,” coach Lenny Paoletti said. “And they’re all eighth graders and ninth graders.” In an effort to save on travel, and also to give the team a chance to play against some familiar competition, the Tigers will move up a class and play in 4A this season. While that should mean much tougher competition, and better pitching, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. “It will be better for the more experienced players and a good learning experience for the newer players,” Boyle said. For the travel ball players on the Holy Trinity roster, playing in 4A represents some fun new challenges. “You see a lot of the players that you would see in tournaments (only it’s) at the high school level,” Douglas said. “It’s a different atmosphere, so it’s kind of cool to see.” VV

‘More motivated’ Hawks have high expectations

This year, not only are they in a new district with Melbourne, Martin County and Sebastian River, they have a renewed determination to break through to the Final Four. “We’re a lot more motivated this year,” Callinan said. Added Palombi: “We’ve just got to want to be there.” While it could be a special season for the Hawks, it should definitely be a special year

for the battery combination of Palombi and Seibert, who will be playing their last year together. “Lauren has been my catcher since I was 6, and her dad taught me to pitch,” Seibert said. “When we’re in a really tough situation, and you want to get a batter out, I’m always thinking, ‘I hope she calls this (pitch)’ and she always calls it.” VV

Viera High’s softball team has high hopes for this season and a terrific blend of veteran and young talent. Co-captains are Lauren Palombi, left, Kate Callinan, center and Sarah Seibert. By Carl Kotala

Dale Pierce has been excited about his Viera High softball team’s potential ever since he saw them go through fall ball. “I’ve worked with a lot of groups of kids and this is one of the best groups I’ve ever worked with in my life,” the Hawks’ coach said. “We went all the way through fall ball with them and they were already well schooled in the game, so it was just fine tuning them to the way we do things

around here. “It was just an absolutely phenomenal fall with them. They all know how to play.” The Hawks certainly appear to be loaded with talent as they head into the 2014 season. Not only is top junior pitcher Sarah Seibert back, but so are senior catcher Lauren Palombi and senior first baseman Kate Callinan. Sophomore Kiana East had a tremendous breakout season last year and is back to play second base and

also pitch. Pierce is also high on a pair of freshmen who could have a major impact on the team this season — shortstop Kaitlyn Jensen and right fielder Haley Hinz. Joining Hinz in the outfield will be Sydney Brooks and Delaney Goff, giving the Hawks plenty of talent up and down the lineup. The Hawks reached the regional quarterfinals last year, after previous back-to-back trips to the regional semifinals.

Conservation measures include the lightsoff patrol where students are responsible for turning off lights when not needed, campus-wide recycling in the quaintly designed “Terracycle brigade” bins, native trees and plants around campus, a butterfly garden planted next to the playground by the school’s E-Club (Environmental Club), field trips to Camp Lanoche and creating a Green Committee in the past year. “The main reason for having an award like this is to get the message through that being green matters and is important for our community, our families, our health, and the wellness of our environment,” said Marcia Booth, a Manatee mom and coincidentally the director of the Brevard Recycles county program. She founded and heads the Green Committee. The award rates three areas, or pillars: reduced environmental impact and costs; improved health and wellness; and effective environmental and sustainability education. “The award motivates schools to ‘do the right things’ in these areas, teaching our children, our future leaders, about a sustainable way of living.” The USDOE Green Ribbon Schools recognition award honors schools

Viera Charter School has the markings of success its first semester, though not without challenge. Replacing him was Dr. Julie Cady, a former Quest Elementary School teacher serving in her first administrative leadership post as VCS assistant Dr. Julie Cady replaced Dr. Robert principal Spellman as principal during the school’s inaugural semester. “I certainly thought that I would be an assistant principal Leadership from the University for a little bit longer; however, I have actually been preparing for of Central Florida in March; her master’s degree in education this position for over a decade,” with a focus on Instructional Cady said. The inaugural Family Fun Weekend in December featured a golf tournament, raising $25,000 to enhance the STEM program. STEM programming is seen as the future in preparing Americans to compete in the high-tech industry, which is increasingly the engine of economic growth. The school offers free tutoring in math, reading, writing and science. Other accomplishments include the Fine Arts program’s first concert, also in December, complete with full set design. Staff includes art teacher Camilo Restrepo and music teacher Michael Law. “I feel we have one of the best Fine Arts programs in this area, led by the best staff,” Cady said. Couponing expert, technical sergeant will share his secrets By Katie Parsons

Lenon Harvey doesn’t clip coupons just to save money. The Viera dad of four and Air Force technical sergeant at Cape Canaveral Air Force Base said he started using coupons out of necessity but that it has turned into a sport. “It’s like a game to me,” Harvey said. “How do I get to zero?” Harvey will teach a course on couponing strategy and etiquette at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 at the Viera Regional Park Community Center. He plans to share his fiveplus years of experience couponing and give tips for the best ways to save money at specific stores. The price? Harvey’s favorite: free. Harvey’s journey in couponing started just a few years ago. When he and his wife Amanda Harvey adopted two-year-old twins, their household income took a hit. She left her job as a nurse and there were instantly two more people to feed and clothe. As a child, Lenon Harvey had seen his mother

collecting and using coupons, so he decided he would give it a try, too. “When I first started, it saved us about $100 per month,” he said. “Now it is much more, depending what items I buy that month.” In an average week, Harvey buys 10 to 15 local newspapers just to clip coupons. He also visits websites like SundayCouponPreview.com and Coupon.com to match up manufacturer and store coupons with what will be on sale. He has a system that includes file folders, envelopes and plastic index card boxes. For all his savings, he says he only spends about an hour and a half each week finding and organizing his coupons. “I usually go through the newspapers while I’m watching TV,” he said. “Sometimes I recruit my kids to help me find the ones I’m looking for.” Harvey has a knack for finding “money makers” — a term in the couponing community that means deals that will actually help the user earn some money in

the form of store rewards or cash back. A few months ago, he took advantage of store sales, manufacturer coupons and store loyalty dollars to purchase about 1,000 cans of shaving cream and related items. He says he spent about $25 in taxes but made $150 in store dollars. Unlike the coupon item hoarders made popular on television series like TLC’s “Extreme Couponing,” when Harvey has more of an item than he could possibly eat or use, he donates the extra. One of his favorite causes is Operation Stand Down, a nonprofit organization that provides social services to veterans. “We have a small cabinet where I put some of my overflow items, but you won’t find things in boxes under our kids’ beds or shoved under our couches,” he said. The couponing class will be the first time Harvey has shared his couponing tactics on the record, though those around him have been benefiting for years. “I often show up at work with extra items and just let everyone take whatever they

want,” he said. “I also give tips to anyone who asks me

for couponing advice and I’m happy to to do it.” VV

Brevard’s Got Music Talent competition brings out the best at Henegar By Jeff Navin

Ellie Richter, Tomas Lopez and Andrew Leonard are among 11 musicians who hope to make an impression at the fifth annual Brevard’s Got Music Talent competition. A good showing could boost them to future stardom. The show will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9 at the Henegar Center in downtown Melbourne. Tickets are $22 and available at the Henegar Center or online at www.henegar.org. The competition will be sponsored by the non-profit Creative Arts Foundation of Brevard, Inc. “We seek out experienced and talented kids who need assistance,’’ said Marshall Frank, the president of the Creative Arts Foundation of Brevard, Inc. “This could help them find venues to perform or give them financial assistance as needed.’’ Richter, a 13-year-old resident of Viera, is a concert pianist. Lopez is a 15-yearold violinist, and Leonard is a 13-year-old concert pianist. Both reside just south of Suntree. The 11 students, who range in age from 13 to 18, are comprised of three pianists, four vocalists, three violinists, one violist and one flutist. A first-place prize of $1,000 will be given. Second place is worth $500, the third-place contestant will earn $250 and $125 will be awarded to the fourth-place musician. “We have two kinds of shows,’’ Frank said. “One is annual and one is monthly. We had a gazillion kids audition for the annual show. They could be between 10 and 19. We were able to whittle it down to the final 12 for the competition at the Henegar.’’ Dr. Robert Lamb, Richard

Sabino and Amy Jevitt will be the three judges. Lamb is the music director at Eastern Florida State College; Sabino, an internationally known conductor, organizes a local brass band and orchestra; and Jevitt is a violin teacher and the former concert master of the Brevard Symphony Orchestra. The show will last approximately 2 1/2 hours, with an intermission where wine, cheese and other refreshments will be served. “These are grants for those who really need it,’’ Frank said. “The money could pay for new instruments, travel money for shows, special training, summer camps or voice training.’’ Other Brevard County musicians who will compete for prizes include 16-yearold Rachel Ho, who will be the lone musician to compete in two different events. She will play the violin and the viola. Aleyna Brown, 17, plays the flute; Charlotte Goodman, 18, is a contender in voice; Henry Goodman, 17, is a violinist; Daniel

Miracle-Ear expands with new location in Suntree

By Rosemary H. Lynn

and nearly invisible hearing aids with cutting-edge design. For more than 65 years, Miracle-Ear has specialized in solutions that remove the barriers of hearing loss. According to Foster, many people ignore their hearing problems for several years before realizing there is technology available to help them. “It takes seven to 10 years to realize that they need help with their hearing problems,” Foster said. “Everyone should get a free hearing test so that they can be treated early.” Being proactive in one’s own health is important, she added. “Hearing loss can (hasten) dementia, especially in the senior population.” Often, the brain must relearn some or all of the sounds one’s ears haven’t been able to pick up and send along because of the hearing loss. The brain needs to be “reprogrammed” to recognize those sounds. This reprogramming can take six or seven weeks, but

Eventually, those with hearing loss begin to understand more of the sounds that they were missing before. Also, those suffering with tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, can be helped with hearing devices. Foster pointed out that many insurance companies cover the cost of hearing aids. Often, there is also a free “trade-up”

benefit, as well as free aftercare support. With more than 1,200 locations worldwide, Miracle-Ear offers a premier customer care package. Health First Medical Group’s director of Clinical Quality Steven King comes across as a very familiar face as he makes his rounds concerning Electronic Medical Records and other matters. His wife is a Health First Medical group doctor, internist Dr. Melody King in Viera. The pair now nine years married, met while both were serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Gordon, Ga. Between them, they have five children ranging

in age from 21 to 27. “We dreamed for a while of opening our own practice. Somewhere in the back of our minds we want to go on medical missions. We haven’t done it yet, but it’s on our bucket list,’’ he said. While not required, Steve King makes sure he’s on his best professional behavior when they see each other at work. “I call her Dr. King, rather than Melody, when I’m around her peers. It’s a respect thing,’’ he said. Steven King also has earned

respect, earning two master’s degrees: a masters of business administration and a master’s in education. He’s also about to start his doctorate in education. His job now includes all the regulatory compliance issues put out by the center for Medicare and Medicaid services. “My position interfaces either directly with the physicians or their ancillary staff 100 percent of the time. I’m in a supportive role to the physicians. If we weren’t married, certainly I would deal with her exactly the same,’’ he said. In his other role as the Electronic Medical Records administrator, Steven King also works with the doctors, including his wife. Melody King, who has been with Health First two and half years, practices general medicine covering a range of ages from 15 to 97. “It’s blood pressure, diabetes, kidney problems, liver disease, women’s health. It’s anything that an adult can experience, really,’’ she said. Working with her husband most days is pretty routine, but it did recently come in handy during a team-building dodge ball game of Health First employees. “We normally just have meetings and Steve is very respectful. I was glad he was on my dodge ball team,’’ she said. VV

Suntree author looks at changing America By Maria Sonnenberg

We’ve come a long way, baby, in these past 50 years, and Suntree author Don Gilleland explores all these changes in “America, a Cultural Enigma,” by Black Rose Writing. Gilleland’s own life is extremely bookworthy. The career soldier enjoyed eight years in the Navy, 22 years as a commissioned officer with the Air Force and seven years in joint assignments in the Army. “There are very few of us who did this,” he said.

Trim down fat cats and round retrievers (Part 2) By Ian Birkbeck, DVM Island Animal Hospital at Viera

Last month, I explained the basic principles of weight managment and described some first steps to take in order to get your pet’s weight under control. Now, I’ll delve a little deeper into some food and lifestyle tips to help keep your pet on track. Clients often ask what kind of food I recommend. While I, like most veterinarians, have my own brand and ingredient preferences, I feel it’s the quantity of food rather than the brand that plays the biggest role in maintaining a proper weight. Remember, no matter the ingredients of a diet, if a dog eats more calories than he or she expends throughout the day, the excess will be stored as fat. I also think it’s important to note that dogs and cats don’t buy pet food — humans do. Be wary of fancy labels and gimmicks designed to attract the one with the wallet (you) rather than your pet. For example, what good is a bowl full of vibrant multicolored kibble to a

dog that is basically red-green color blind? Your veterinarian can help the weight loss process in several ways. For example, he or she can help calculate your pet’s metabolic energy requirements, MER for short, which can provide a more precise calorie goal than the guidelines on food packaging. Also, there are potential underlying medical issues (hypothyroidism in dogs, for example) that can contribute to weight problems. Your veterinarian can recommend any appropriate testing to check for such issues. It’s important to keep in mind that besides calories, pet food supplies important micronutrients

including vitamins and minerals which pets require for normal body functions. By reducing food intake too much, you may risk creating a deficiency of these micronutrients in your pet’s diet. This is where specially formulated diets available through your veterinarian may be helpful. They are designed to

contain all the necessary vitamins and minerals, but to be deficient in calories only. But what about treats? Pets usually like treats for the same reasons we do, they tend to be higher in salt, fat and sugar, making for an enjoyable, but calorie-rich experience. Treats are an important part of the petowner bond, and I almost never recommend eliminating them completely. Again, it’s calories in vs. calories out. Decrease the amount of the normal diet a bit to compensate for the treats. Consider substituting healthier treats, particularly for dogs. Many dogs will gladly accept baby carrots or frozen green beans as treats, which hardly make a dent in most pets’ daily

caloric intake. I explained that the basic principle of weight loss is to expend more calories through activity than one takes in through food. Physical activity is an important piece of the weight loss equation. If you are working on getting your pet to lose weight, consider playing fetch, throwing the Frisbee with your dog, letting your cat chase a laser pointer or teaser toy. Exercise can have the dual benefit of helping owners be healthier as well. A couple of 20-minute walks around the block can take a few pounds off your pet and maybe a few points off your blood pressure as well. Why not take the opportunity to keep your New Year’s resolutions on track too. VV

Last year’s first-place winning piece, “Squeeze Me First” by Frank Spino, is an example of the beauty and quality of work offered for sale at this annual watercolor exhibition by the Brevard Watercolor Society.

Watercolor show makes a splash By Mary Brotherton

Brevard Watercolor Society presents its 19th annual art show, the Splash of Watercolor, at the Azan Shrine Temple in Melbourne. The show will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 15 and 16 and is open to the public free of charge. Also, free parking will be available at the family-friendly event and guests may purchase heart-healthy lunch items on site. Artist Lolly Walton said, “Hard to believe it’s been 19 years for this event, but our members rise to the occasion each year to show just how beautiful watercolor can be.” Attendees may purchase one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork from the largest display of original watercolor paintings in Brevard. This “Le Sweet Art a Fair” offers painting demos, an active and always-exciting paint-a-round, a browse box room that offers prints, giclees and originals, purchase tickets for drawings and a silent auction. Pieces will be framed and available for purchase. The Society encourages, supports and educates its 200 members and the public to the importance and beauty of watercolor in the art world. Men and women of the Society will offer this water-soluble media on paper in approximately 100 works. Azan Shrine Temple is located at 1591 W Eau Gallie Blvd. in Melbourne. Gourd show attracts visitors worldwide By Mary Brotherton

The Lambda Chapter of the American Gourd Society presents its Gourds Go Hawaiian show Feb. 21 through 23 at the Azan Shrine Center in Eau Gallie. The show always travels to the show chairperson’s home area and this is its third year in Melbourne. The Florida Gourd Society calls its chapters “gourd patches.” “We are lucky to have one of those patches here in Melbourne,” said Therese Ferguson local patch chair. “We meet once a month at the Eau Gallie Library for a demo and often a workshop taught by one of our members,” This year’s show expects to attract more than 2,000 guests. According to Ferguson, the craft suppliers and gourd vendors come from

all over the country. Some teachers of the 40 classes will come from as far away as Maryland and Kentucky. She said the show attracts people from as far away as South America and Canada. Attendees may watch free demos each day during the lunch hours or visit the 60 categories in the judged exhibition area. Ferguson expects up to 400 gourds in this area, many with complex designs and a variety of uses from masks, musical instruments, lamps, birdhouses, purses and jewelry. A Saturday evening gourd auction after the dinner is one of the weekend’s highlights. Each chapter will bring its Traveling Gourd for auction. At least 75 percent of members have worked on the item. Patches will also have a Hawaiian themed table with items that will be given away. Lunch is being provided by the Azan

Voting begins in contest to name male, female meerkats at Brevard Zoo Special to Viera Voice

It is an exciting year for Brevard Zoo as it celebrates its 20th birthday. In honor of this major milestone, the zoo is opening a new exhibit featuring meerkats on March 15. These precious, precocious and entertaining mammals represent a thoroughly different kind of resident than what is currently housed at the Zoo. Meerkats are highly social animals distinguished by their communal nature and extended family living arrangements, living in multigenerational groups with an alpha male and female. Their energetic, amusing and charismatic behaviors will be visible for all to see. As the meerkats’ new home is being constructed in the Expedition Africa section of the zoo, individuals are invited to join in the celebration and welcome this new family. The zoo is asking the public to help name the alpha male and female meerkats. Visit the Brevard Zoo Facebook fan page to see the suggested names in the comment box under the photo album of the alpha male and female. This list will be sent to PNC Bank, which is the title sponsor for the meerkat exhibit. PNC staff members will choose their top five names for the male and female. Individuals are encouraged to visit any of the 15 PNC Bank branches in Brevard County and cast a ballot for the names they like best. Voting in the branches will begin Feb. 3 and conclude March 1. On March 7, the winning names will be announced just in time for the opening of the new exhibit on March 15. VV
