Since the day they were born, Patrick and Alma Terrell's two grandsons, Jamari, 11, and Jakari, 7, have lived under their grandparents' roof along with their mother, the Terrells’ daughter, Tenesha, 30. Five years ago, the children tragically lost their father, their mother's fiancé. The Terrells happily extended their parenting role, continuing to make their home a threegeneration household. Two years ago, Tenesha and her sons moved into an apartment, yet the boys remain very close to their grandparents and still live with them for half of the week.“My husband and I are still very involved with our daughter and her kids,” said Alma Terrell. “When Tenesha is at work or school, my grandkids are here with me at the house. “We provide things for the children, like clothing, food and school supplies.”TheTerrells have another daughter, Keisha, 28, and a grandchild, age 4. Both of the Terrells' daughters are enrolled in nursing school. “Alma and I take care of the kids, so that they can get their careers rolling,” Patrick Terrell said. “It’s always good to have someone to fall back on.”Originally from the Philippines, Alma met and married Patrick Terrell there when she was in her early 20s. He is from Tupelo, Mississippi. He met Alma when he was in the U.S. Air Force stationed at Clark Air Base, which in 1991 became a Philippine-operated air base. When Patrick Terrell was stationed at Okinawa, Japan in 1995, the couple moved there with their two young daughters, Tenesha and Keisha. Four years later, Terrell was transferred to Patrick Air Force Base (now Patrick Space Force Base). He worked there in Military Personnel Flight, which in civilian terms means human resources.Theyhave lived in the Grand Haven community in Viera since buying a fourbedroom house in 2001. Patrick Terrell retired from the Air Force in 2004 and went to work for a contractor as a senior buyer, while Alma had just started a 20-year career as a coordinator at the Youth Center on base. She retired in 2020.Thecouple have been married for 33 years. Patrick Terrell loves fishing and spends time with his grandsons catching and releasing fish in their backyard lake, while Alma Terrell has been adamant that they become good swimmers.“Igrewup in the Philippines,” she said. “There is so much water everywhere, but I can’t swim, so I wanted to make sure that they can swim.” Both boys are also active in Cub Scouts. Patrick goes camping with them and participates in community outreach. Alma loves to garden. She has mango, banana, sugar apples and guava trees, and grows long beans, moringa, purple yam, lemon grass, melon, sweet potatoes and eggplants. One of the benefits of living in Grand Haven for Patrick Terrell is being close enough to be able to see the Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat or the Orlando Magic play in person. Alma loves living in Grand Haven. “This is my ideal home,” she said. “It is spacious here inside and out.”

The name 28 North represents the latitude for Brevard County. “Many of our customers don’t know that’s where the name comes from. It is by design that everything about us has a backstory,” Chris Conneen, the owner of both 28 North Gastropub and the adjacent Pizza Gallery & Grill restaurant, said. Conneen selected Chester (C.J.) Hughes as the new executive chef for the Gastropub. Hughes had worked with the previous executive chef, Nill Saybe, for the past three and a half months and helped roll out the new menu for the summer. Hughes, from Cape Cod, graduated at age 20 from the New England Culinary Institute in Montpellier, Vermont. He worked for four years in North Carolina hotels and restaurants, even opening a few, before he and his mother opened the Too Cool Café in Satellite Beach. They ran it for four years before selling it. Hughes said he will bring a lot of New England flair to the menu, including seafood items such as lobster rolls. Having won Blue Ribbons for his unique sweet potato clam chowder, clients can expect to see it on the menu. Be sure to pronounce chowder as chowdah which is made with littleneck clams (shells included for the presentation), house-cured pork belly, sweet potato clam brodo, chive oil and microgreens. Hawks will rely on young players in key spots this season
The Viera Hawks have some key veterans returning and a lot of young players taking on bigger roles in 2022.
The Viera Hawks are going to have to rely on a lot of young talent in key positions this season. But don’t tell them they’re in a rebuilding mode. “I’m too competitive to want to re-build,” first-year Viera football coach Shane Staples said. “We’ve got a tough schedule, but I’m going to convince these guys that we’re going to go out and try to win every game. If I was different, then I’m not the right guy for the job. “… I think a lot of people around this area know who I am. We’re going to come out and compete from the first snap to the last buzzer and, hopefully, the majority of the time we come out on top. I think we have the team that can do Vierait.”graduated 19 seniors from last year’s team, many of them on the defensive side of the ball. That could lead to the Hawks being a little overlooked, especially with a schedule that includes eight opponents who made the playoffs last year. But that’s OK with Viera.

VV VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala Hurlie Brown, who led Merritt Island to the Class 5A state championship game last season, has drawn rave reviews since taking over the Holy Trinity program.
BY CARL KOTALA Hurlie Brown is trying to instill a strong work ethic in his Holy Trinity players that will help them now and in the future.“That’s the only way I know how to do it,” Holy Trinity’s new football coach said.“Everywhere I’ve ever been, every great player I’ve ever been around, all of them have had a phenomenal work ethic. That’s the only way to play the game. You’ve got to be able to put the work in.” Brown, who has a wealth of coaching experience and led Merritt Island to the Class 5A state championship game last season, has definitely had an impact on the Tigers since practice“Everyonestarted.has to be standing up. Everyone’s doing something. You can’t slack around,” Holy Trinity sophomore Dylan Jensen said. “Even after practice, you have to run off the field. A lot of the laziness is getting kicked away at you because if not, you have to go back and do it again.“It’s a lot more intense. You’re just always doing something. The pace of the practice (will help) … everyone’s going to be conditioned for the field.” Senior center Greyson Reynolds has also been impressed with what Brown has brought to the Tigers since taking over the program at the end of June. “It’s been a great transition, very smooth,” Reynolds said. “ … We’ve got some young, raw talent in here that I think we can really chisel away at, build up and be good in the next few years. “We’ll be good this year. He’s done a great job. He’s brought in more work ethic, a lot more intensity. We’ve really played more physical.” Freshman Brogan McNab, who is playing quarterback in addition to cornerback for Holy Trinity, likes how practices are organized and is excited about the young talent he’s been working with this season.

Abbey Cheek, a veteran professional softball league player who played her first season for the Pride, led the league in home runs with eight.
“We’re going to be very competitive.”Reynolds, for one, believes the addition of Brown and his staff will help lift the Tigers higher than anyone can imagine.“Ithink the coaching is really going to help a team like us be better than everyone thinks we will be,” he said.
“I have not played much quarterback before,” McNab said. “I’ve always thrown, but this will be my first year starting (at quarterback). We have really key positions back in our setting and our hitting. Hailey (Beigh) started for us on the right side. Kasey Morgan’s back. She was our other outside.“Offensively, we have our returners. What’s new for us is filling in those defensive roles.”Tothat end, the Hawks have brought up three players from last year’s JV team — Audia Freckleton, Adriana Salinas and Amelia Talbott. “I think all the returners are really pushing all the new people coming in,” Carter said. “They’re ready to go.”

Meet the coaches
BY CARL KOTALA Holy Trinity volleyball coach Pete Klonowski likes what he has been seeing from his team on the court this season. What he doesn’t like is seeing a string of eight straight district championships on the banner hanging in the gym and knowing it could have been nine. “That was the first thing we talked about at our first practice,” Klonowski said. “We went and sat in front of that banner, making sure we all understand what the goal is. “It was unfortunate (last year), but honestly, I thought the team that deserved to win, won. (Edgewood) wanted to win more. They played better than us. And honestly, we were underprepared.“It’sagoodtime to start a new streak,That’sthough.”exactly what his players have in mind, “That’stoo.our main goal,” senior Sophia Panarese said. “We think about it every day.”

“Obviously, we know now that we can win it as a club. Hopefully, we can continue to do that.” VV
“We talked about how (much) hard work it was going to be and how using our entire squad was going to be important,” Dixon said. “And that’s what we did. Everybody played every game. Everybody contributed really well and they worked exceptionally hard.“In the end, we got what we deserved, I think, because of those things.”
The SCU U14 girls team also reached the national tournament. With two titles in two years, SCU is making a name for itself on a national level. “Hopefully, we can keep doing it, whether it’s my team or the next team that comes through, or one of the older teams,” Dixon said.

The Space Coast United Soccer Club U15 girls won the US Club Soccer National Cup XXI Finals tournament this summer in Commerce City, Colorado. It’s the second national championship in club history. The first came last year when the SCU’s U16 girls team won the title. “It was really exciting,” said Ava Knight, a sophomore at Holy Trinity who played right back for SCU. “Everybody was really excited that we got to go out to Colorado to compete in a national tournament. We all went out there with the mindset to win and do the best we could.”
After playing — and winning — three games in three days, Space Coast United defeated Virginia Soccer Association VSA 07G ECNL RL by a score of 2-1 in the championship game, which was held July 18. Although SCU outscored its opponents 11-2 in the tournament, coach Cal Dixon said there were some tough moments on the way to the national title — including the fact of playing three games in as many days in Colorado’s high altitude.
“I think as a team, we’re all really close,” Knight said. “We work really well together. I thought in the tournament, specifically, we all played really well together.“Everybody was doing their part and nobody was really lacking in an area. Everybody gave 100% at their position and really dominated.”
BY CARL KOTALA
Space Coast opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over a team from Austin, Texas thanks to goals from Tashiya McMillan (Vero Beach); Gianna Lopez (Edgewood); Brooke Voorhees (Titusville) and Avary Wilgeroth (Vero Beach).Game two found SCU trailing 1-0 at the half against a team from North Texas. But Greer Reynolds (Holy Trinity) scored in the opening minute of the second half and Melonie Wahrmann (Bayside) scored moments later to put Space Coast in front. Bailey Ametrano (Astronaut) scored late for a final score of 3-1.Goals by Malaya Davis (Satellite) and Catherine McCarthy (Holy Trinity) helped SCU to a 2-0 win over the Edina Soccer Club 07G Green that clinched a spot in the finals. In that game, Lopez and Riley Riggenbach scored to put SCU up 2-0, but Virginia rallied for a goal with 30 minutes left in the game and then put on a big charge to try to get the game-tying goal.Goalkeeper Kendall Mix (Viera) came up big in the second half, making several big saves for SCU. Other players who played key roles for SCU were Allison Teschendorf (Viera); Rebbecca Lorigan (West Shore); Hannah Wimmer(Rockledge);ChamberlainAshlynn(Edgewood) and Meghan Nadle (Viera). Evie Flickinger (Holy Trinity) did not make the trip because of an injury, but played a part in helping SCU reach the national tournament.
They knew it was going to take every single player on the roster to get the job done. And get the job done, they did.

Commuting between Los Angeles and Brevard would have been exhausting for many mortals, but not Ella, who went above and beyond her sixth year acting projects to enroll in art classes taught by international portraiture master Debi Pettigrew. “Ella’s early pieces are beautiful, but her art since working with Deb is on another level,” Nessel said. When Ella discovered Pettigrew taught art at assisted living and memory care facilities, she wanted in, assisting her teacher with watercolor and pastel classes. “In July, Ella became the youngest ever member of the Brevard Cultural Alliance,” her proud mom Lee Nessel said. That’s not all, either, for this Viera resident is the youngest artist in the county to have her pastels juried and accepted by the Arts in Public Places Committee. Six of her works are currently on display on the third floor of Brevard Government Center Building C. Eau Gallery also shows her works and features her notecards.“Ellaisan inspiration to all young artists to pursue their passion,” said Lynne Brezina, the arts services manager for Brevard Cultural Alliance. For one so young, she exhibits an innate grasp of pastels, her favorite medium, and an impeccable sense of design. “I like how the end product looks real and I feel proud every time I finish one,” Ella said. Her favorite subjects are animals, and her work has earned her commissions from pet owners. “I like to see their personalities come to life on my papers,” she said. Her acting career, which started at age three, includes being part of the national tour of “Waitress” at age five, and a regular gig at age six in ABC’s “United We Fall,” opposite Jane Curtin, as well as a film debut with Adam Sandler in Netflix’s “Hubie Halloween.”

SAG-AFTRA actress with Broadway, television and film roles, entrepreneur, singer, pianist, guitarist, filmmaker, jewelry designer, competitive ballroom dancer and philanthropist, the pint-sized Ella can now also include acclaimed artist to her already overflowing curriculum vitae.
PARKING ART continued from page 1
For the previous year’s graduating class, many beloved Viera High traditions and rites-ofpassage were thwarted by the COVID-19 pandemic, including homecoming, prom and Grad Bash. The Viera High School administration got creative to make it up to the class of 2022, giving them the liberty to be more creative on school property than ever before.
“It’s been such a wonderful experience — everyone has been so creative,” Draves said, inspired by the seniors’ creativity.Oneclass of 2023 senior, Brooke Mostert, took inspiration from the parking block artwork of her older sister, Paige, who graduated from Viera High in 2019. “I wanted to do something like my sister’s and add in my own little twist,” she stated. Brooke recruited her dad, Scott, to help her make her mark on Viera’s campus. “This is a really good way for my dad and I to get outside and do something fun together.”

“We wanted to find a way to make it special for our seniors, during a year that was so un-special,” said Jeff Draves, a Viera High School teacher and senior class sponsor.
Viera seniors for years to come will have the opportunity to let their personalities shine on the pavement that precedes the school’s walls. This section of the VHS parking lot now tells the story of the class of 2023, and the beautiful outcome of this new tradition beautifies the lot for all Viera residents to enjoy. VV
For the last 16 years, seniors have only been permitted to paint the concrete parking block within their spot. After prom was canceled in the spring of 2022, VHS seniors were given the allclear to paint their entire parking spot. By that time, however, graduation was right around the corner, so many seniors chose to not exert all the time, energy and paint that would be required for this project. As a result, the class of 2023, the current seniors, brought this tradition on with full force for the very first time. The Viera High seniors worked diligently, covering nearly the entire right side of the parking lot with a vast variety of amazing artwork.

Jennifer Marin’s motherin-law, Elena Villar of Lake Worth, is a big supporter of the boys' business endeavors. She has already bought some of Logan’s drawings, including a colorful donut drawing and an intricate ruler drawing on which he meticulously put all of the lines and metrics. “I am looking forward to attending the fair this year,” Villar said. “I always have Luca save me some of his delicious banana and zucchini breads and this year I am bringing him my home-grown mangoes from my tree so that he can make mango bread. It will be delicious and a big hit.”

“There will be 80 kids businesses and over 100 participants since businesses are allowed up to three participants per booth,” said Nora McFarland, the executive director of the Children’s Business Fair. Luca Pinto, 14, a ninth grader at Viera High School, has been presenting and selling his Sweet Treats home baked goods at each of the fairs since they began. He bakes banana bread, zucchini bread, pumpkin rolls and muffins, chocolate chip and Reece’s Pieces cookies. His business continues throughout the year via his Facebook page, Sweet Treats by Luca. His brother, Carter Pinto, 12, a sixth grader at Manatee Elementary, will again this year feature his Savory Sips iced tea blends including berry and his most popular one, pineapple. This year, Carter will test a new marketing strategy as the third brother in the family, Logan Marin, 6, a first grader at Manatee Elementary, enters the Children’s Business Fair for the first time. Logan will showcase his crayon drawings which he refers to as “Cool Drawings” and keeps in a portfolio binder. Each is signed and includes a happy message such as Be Good, Be Surprised, Call Your Friends, and his favorite Work Hard, Be Nice and Eat Pizza. Carter will help Logan get started in his new business by offering event goers a free ice tea if they purchase a drawing. Their mother, Jennifer Marin, said her three boys are working hard getting ready for this year’s event. “It’s a lot of work, but they each do a great job. They are responsible to do it all themselves with the exception of my purchasing the ingredients,” she said. “But they pay me back with the proceeds they earn. Luca and Carter have savings accounts at a bank. Logan has a piggy bank, but will soon be able to open his own bank savings account, too.

Most of us know the Indian River Lagoon is struggling, and that we are making progress due largely to our 2016 vote for the half-cent sales tax and Save Our Indian River Lagoon (SOIRL) Plan. Still, there is a lot more to do. For example, we don’t require septic system inspections or repairs, we don’t verify if agricultural runoff meets requirements, and our state restoration plans fail to take account of growth. Also, we will need to extend our SOIRL plan in 2024. How do we ensure this will happen? Well, someone needs to doThat’ssomething!right!Ineed to and you do, too. But what/how?
Join the Lagoon Voices (helpthelagoon.org/Voices), our newly created advocacy army of residents and organizations dedicated to influencing our leaders to do the right thing for the IRL. By recognizing their constructive efforts and holding them to account for bad policies we can help them help the IRL. You’ll combine your voice with hundreds of other Lagoon Voices to create an advocacy message that cannot be ignored by our politicians. When you visit helpthelagoon.org/Voices, you will see short videos explaining the nature of the problem and explaining how to send effective messages and how to advocate. Going forward, we will email you information about candidates that support the IRL and will notify you when and how to message state and local leaders about pending bills and regulations they should support or oppose.

Ace aficionadosHardwareinViera, Suntree and the communities, surroundingwhoprefer Ace to the big box stores, will be excited to know that there will be a soft opening of the store the day after Labor Day at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6. The address of the new 12,000-square-foot store is 5494 Lorkey Drive near the Chick fil-A off of Stadium Parkway. “The store’s grand opening will happen in late November,” owner Hitesh Patel said. “About 90 days after the soft opening.” Some Ace Hardware locations are known for selling upscale hardware and home accessories. The Viera location will not be an exception. “Are you familiar with Stihl equipment?” asked Patel. “We will also have the Big Green Egg, Benjamin Moore paints and YETI.” Stihl power tools and accessories work wonderfully for your home, garden and DIY projects. The Big Green Egg ceramic outdoor cookers use lump charcoal to cook pizzas, meats, vegetables and more. Benjamin Moore paints can make the interior of your home or apartment shine; and YETI coolers and drinkware are always popular.

Patrons of Thrifty Specialty Produce & Meats can now enjoy shopping in central Brevard instead of having to drive to Melbourne or Palm Bay. The grocery store opened its newest and largest store July 29 in Rockledge with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that attracted a cheerful crowd.Infront of that spirited crowd gathered outside the store, real estate developer John Newton welcomed local officials, including Rockledge Mayor Tom Price, Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina and Brevard County Sheriff WayneStoreIvey.owner Pedro Hernandez, his family with him, thanked those involved in the project and expressed gratitude for the joint efforts culminating in the execution of his vision.
“We’ve expanded to reach so many people that sometimes I catch myself in awe just realizing that so many people recognize our name and they relate to our store in many different ways,” Hernandez said. “That really is truly an honor.”

Drawing laughs by the good-natured ribbing of Medina about whose city is the best in Brevard, Price said, “This is probably one of the most exciting openings I have been to in my 12 years as mayor of the city of Rockledge.”Locatedat 920 Barton Boulevard, the retail space has been empty for years. Longtime residents might remember when the building housed a Winn-Dixie store.

“This was one of our, what they call white elephants,” Price said. “Been sitting for 30 years. They took it and converted it to what it is now. There were a few things in between, but the big one was Winn-Dixie. It was built for Winn-Dixie in the 1960s. There used to be Liggett’s Drugs; they just made it part of the grocery store. The old Winn-Dixie plus Liggett’s Drugs, made it 33,000 square feet.”The store has an expansion of fresh produce, with international offerings like cassava, white yam, yampi (a Caribbean and Central American staple root similar to a sweet potato), and quenepas or Spanish limes. Staple items like canned or dry beans, rice, herb teas, evaporated milk, jellies and jams line rows of shelves. In the west end of the store is a bakery, two cafes, Mi Cocina Café and The Escobar Kitchen, and a hot food bar. Shoppers can enjoy their purchases at tables near the front. As its name forecasts, Thrifty’s offers a large selection of meat, including pork, beef, and chicken, as well as fresh and frozen seafood. “Pedro has the most phenomenal grocery store I’ve ever seen in my entire life,” Newton told the crowd. “It’s an amazing business venture and it is incredibly well-run.” Hernandez and his wife own two other stores at 2447 North Wickham Road and 2135 Palm Bay Road NE. In 1934, the city received 12,000 man-hours from the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) to build nine additional holes to the golf course. A year later, an additional 3,600 hours of labor from FERA was received to complete the golf course expansion. The new 18hole golf course opened for play in January 1936. Today, the 18-hole, par-71 golf course features five sets of tees playing from 4,300 to 6,400 yards. The club's traditional feel, scenic views and routing make for an enjoyable walking course.

PREHEAT THE OVEN TO 400F
• Place the first ingredient at the bottom in the middle, following with the rest of the ingredients on top • Finish with any liquid, herbs and condiments, ensuring there’s not too much liquid to avoid spilling over when folding • Grab the tops and fold the sides creating a tight seal to avoid any steam or liquid from escaping. If using parchment, it can be sealed by tucking the crimped ends under or using kitchen twine at each end

Viera Voice | September 2022 vieravoice.com32 BY NANETTE HEBDIGE
In a skillet, heat about 1 TBSP of olive oil and a small pad of butter. Sautee the leeks and onion for about 5 minutes and add the chopped garlic. Sauté for about 3 minutes, season with salt/pepper and add a small sprinkle of thyme and deglaze the pan with the white wine. Allow the wine to evaporate somewhat and cook until they are almost soft. Salt and pepper the fish. Cut two pieces of parchment paper or aluminum foil, large enough to accommodate the ingredients and have ample room to seal. Place the raw zucchini slices and spinach leaves on the bottom of the parchment paper. Place the sliced mushrooms on the spinach. Add a small drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper on the veggies. Season fish with salt and pepper and place it atop all the veggies and spoon the leek and onion mixture onto the fish. Drizzle a bit of lemon juice and some thin slices of lemon on top of the fish, add about 2 TBSP of white wine to the corner of the pouches and add a few pads of butter on top of fish. Seal the pouches and bake for about 12 minutes. Serve with jasmine rice.

When fish is prepared en papillote, it’s literally Nirvana from the gods. Paired with veggies it absorbs all the unique flavors, rendering a succulent delicate outcome packed with mouthwatering punch. The a-typical choices are cod, halibut or tilapia, however good contenders are also flounder, snapper, salmon. Ensure the filets are about 1-inch thick so they cook evenly, and they should not cook longer than 10 to 12 minutes. For a whole chicken breast, it’s typically 20 minutes, but ensure it is pounded evenly to ensure uniform cooking. FL from sticking, as well as a small amount of liquid (broth or wine)
Fish, shrimp and vegetables are the classic choice, as the ingredients are very responsive to the flavors injected. If selecting chicken, ensure it's sliced thinly or pounded down, so it cooks evenly • Cut the parchment paper (wax paper cannot be used since it burns in the oven) or aluminum foil in a large enough square so there’s enough room to tightly seal it • Always add a splash of olive oil to prevent the foods

Cooking in a pouch brings out exquisite flavors, healthy goodness W e are in the throwback era, where almost everything is getting a much-needed makeover. In food archives, recipes are being ransacked and en papillote (cooking in a paper pouch) is now getting a much-deserved spotlight.InFrench, en papillote means in paper and in the culinary world, its claim to fame arrived when it was introduced during the era of Haute Cuisine (elevated cooking), where meals were presented with élan and panache. A paper-looking purse was created, where ingredients were steamed inside and then presented on a plate with much pomp and ceremony. Then the clientele would open its contents, achieving a nirvana-like state by inhaling the fragrant aromas from the sumptuous contents, prior to consuming the delectable and delicate interior.Since it’s a blank canvas, its revival is rather a marvelous thing since the food is classically savory steaming in its own juices, rather than using the oldschool lackluster steam method. All the flavors are allowed to become a marriage made in heaven. Coupled with today’s vehemence of non-calorific intake, this is the holy grail of preparations, and the ease of prep work makes for a winning dish. Not just in flavor, but in the presentation department.
2 cod filets — make two pouches 2 leeks — washed and sliced into rounds
Olive oil and butter
1 pkg white mushrooms 1 zucchini — medium sliced ½ sweet onion — sliced ¼ cup of dry white wine
Dried thyme Juice and zest of half lemon 1 clove of garlic — chopped Small bunch of baby spinach Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper
• Bake and place the packets in individual plates and cut the tops with scissors, being careful to avoid burns from the hot steam before serving So, entertain the notion of cooking en papillote because the results are truly glorious with a myriad of flavor profiles. And the best of all — it’s very wholesome.

September has arrived and with it fall. In Florida, although we still have heat, we can enjoy a refreshing cocktail infused with all the flavors of autumn. This is a twist on French 75, where the champagne is substituted with sparkling apple cider. If back to school has you dreaming of apples, this cocktail will remind you of all the flavors of fall.
SIMPLE SYRUP: In a small pan, add one cup of sugar and 1 cup of water. Heat until dissolved and chill. It keeps for a month refrigerated.

Providers — cities, counties and haulers, have greatly improved the information put out to the general public, but there is always room for additional improvement. That may include having an updated list of accepted items constantly in circulation, shared with partners and available where people can easily find; having a solid, unified message and a set of guidelines employed by all team members when addressing common questions and highlighting frequent mistakes. Participants, on the other hand, can do a better job of reviewing what is actually accepted by the curb recycling program in the area where we live, making sure to only add those items to the recycle bin. If unsure, we must stick to the rule of recycling only clean, empty and dry items, and to the basic materials, like beverage and food cans, plastic bottles, newspaper, magazines and cardboard. Unfortunately, contamination is a global issue and not a problem limited to curb recycling. Other programs offered by organizations like Recycle Brevard suffer from the same malady.Recycle Brevard’s programs include the recycling of hard-to-recycle materials and the storage of unwanted items in reusable conditions that could be reused in art, craft, school and science projects. The list of acceptable items is available on RecycleBrevard.org but that seems to be often ignored and what ends up being dropped off is frequently loads of unusable and non-recyclable items.Bysticking to what can be accepted or reaching out when in doubt, everyone wins — more can be diverted from the landfills and recycling programs may have a chance to continue on. Less in this case could indeed mean more. VV Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@RecycleBrevard.org Recycle Brevard is an independent nonprofit organization 100% run by volunteers focused on reducing waste and promoting sustainable living.
Reducing contamination – when less is more
While visiting family in Pembroke Pines, I was surprised to learn that the city stopped offering traditional residential recycling and opted to send it all — trash and recyclables combined — to incineration starting on Jan. 2, 2022. The letter sent to Pembroke Pines residents tries to ease residents’ concerns by stating that “by Florida statute, the incineration of refuse materials to make energy is considered recycling.”
Residents can do little about the recycling market — other than buy recycled products — but can do a lot about contamination. Contamination is caused by what is known as wishcycling, placing trash and non-recyclable items in the recycle bin, mixed with actual recyclables, hoping that all can be recycled. Well, it cannot! As a practice, wishcycling diminishes the quality of the load or completely voids its recyclability, and raises the costs of the recycling process. In some areas, like Deerfield Beach, the rate of contamination has reached nearly 50%, destining collected material to the landfill.Combating contamination has become a high priority since the tightening of the recycling markets triggered by stricter standards set by China in 2018 for the import of recyclables. To make recycling viable, we need providers and participants to do a better job.

Lawanna Bishop, 60, of Merritt Island lost her daughter in March. Her grandchildren, ages 11, 7 and 3, now live with her. She has another granddaughter, 10, who lives with her as well as her brother, whom she said is autistic. “These small people can really eat,” said Bishop, a widow and disabled U.S. Army veteran. “My biggest bill is groceries. We do not have food stamps. It’s also hard to find housing right now.”
Lisa Wood, 58, of Merritt Island, is a single grandparent who has been raising her grandchildren, ages 14, 12 and 7, for the past four years.Wood said that funding for grandparents is lacking.“Those of us who took our grandchildren out of a situation without going through the state get nothing. I struggle as a grandparent,” she said. “I haven’t taken care of myself for the past four years and have a plethora of health issues while trying to work. The struggles are real.” Wood said she only receives $303 per month via Florida Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, as well as food stamps and Medicaid.

“I have had many sleepless nights on how I’m going to raise these kids, but it’s the best alternative they have at this point,” said Wood, who hopes that her story can raise awareness.

“Everyone plays a big part in saving these gentle, magnificent creatures by being more aware of our ecosystems. It doesn’t matter if you live near the water or not, the run-off still contaminates the lagoon.” Dinkins said. More than 71% of the seagrass has been lost in the Indian River Lagoon and SMC workers have been tirelessly working to replant it and other aquatic plants to restore the seabed, but their growth takes time to get re-established.
“Another tremendous concern has been residential lawn fertilization, because it’s had a very harmful impact creating algae that kills the seagrass in the lagoon. It was banned this summer, but the fertilizer ban is being lifted again September 2022.”

“Not only is the mortality rate unusually high, but we’ve also noticed that the cows are hardly bearing any calves,” Dinkins said.

“I’m just one of the many here at SMC striving to create awareness,” Dinkins said. “With our efforts, we aim to increase public understanding by educating the population and advocating strong protection measures for these beautiful creatures and their ecosystem for future generations.”

Everyone can have a role in helping to save the manatees
A manatee feeds on seagrass.
An emaciated manatee struggles to find enough food.
Protecting the manatees in the Indian River Lagoon is more critical than ever. Hundreds of the sea cows have died in the past two years raising serious concerns from many, including Save the Manatee Club. Founded in 1981 by Jimmy Buffett and former U.S. Sen. Bob Graham, Save The Manatee Club is an awardwinning nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the manatees and their aquatic habitat. Manatees are gentle giants. They do not have any natural predators, are considered nature’s gardeners and are the official Florida marine animal.Butmanatees are listed as vulnerable on an international level and as threatened in the United States.InFlorida, there are large numbers along the Indian River Lagoon during the winter. Their only source of food is marine seagrass and seawater vegetation, which in recent years has been disappearing at alarming rates. Kim Dinkins, one of the senior conservationist associates at SMC, is very passionate about protecting Florida’s waterways and improving the quality of the waters. “Water runoff from sewage, septic and treated water has a direct harmful impact to the watersheds that make it into the lagoon, hence affecting the natural growth of the ecosystem,” Dinkins said.
The fertilizer ban usually runs from June 1 to September 30. In 2021, more than 1000 manatees perished mainly from starvation due to lack of seagrass. This year, the number is as high as 653 in Brevard County alone.
