Association living By frank kneiSer

SENIOR LIFE is proud to bring you a new monthly column called Association Living. Written by Frank Kneiser, CMCA, AMS, the general manager of the 4,500home Suntree Homeowners Association, the column will discuss the many aspects and variables of association living. Kneiser has been a licensed community association manager in Florida since 1990. He is not an attorney, however, a requirement of his community association manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida association laws. Legal questions should be referred to your attorney. There are several different types of associations in Florida. Often, owners will use HOA as a generic term for their associations. HOA is actually an abbreviation for Homeowners Association and is governed by statute FL720. Homeowners usually own the lots surrounding their homes and a percentage of common areas and amenities of the association. Condominium associations fall under statute FL718. Owners own only everything inside the paint of their units. The association owns everything outside of the paint, including the building(s), common areas and amenities and each owner shares a percentage of ownership. FL723 regulates mobile homes. Owners usually own their mobile homes and pay rent to a park owner in order to use the common areas and amenities. In some cases, owners own their mobile home and the association owns the common areas and amenities. In this case, owners share a percentage of ownership and most provisions of FL720 would apply. Cooperative associations, regulated by FL719, are less common. Owners buy shares in the co-op, which owns all units, buildings, common areas and amenities. These Associations generally have some things in common, such as being governed by a board of directors, usually elected by members. The board has a fiduciary duty to carry out all of the provisions of the articles, declaration and by-laws. Members pay assessments for the maintenance and management of common areas and amenities. Associations are usually referred to as “Deed Restricted” which means owners are required to and agree to abide by all rules and regulations found in the declaration and by-laws. It’s important to point out that I am not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of my community association manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida association laws. Contact Frank with your HOA questions at Frank@SuntreeFlorida.com.

E

i’m not sure march 2011 came in like a lion, but the iron horse brushfire certainly did. engulfing more than 16,000 acres, our neighbors in mims and titusville had quite a scare. With firefighters in my family, i shuddered when i heard about matthew Wescott’s burns. i’m always thankful to hear a fire has been contained. i’m also thankful for our successful Boomer|senior expo last month. through the efforts of many, the 2011 Guide is likely to win another award for senior LiFe. if you don’t have your copy, be sure to call the office to find out where you can pick one up. With the excitement and success of the Boomer|senior expo, we’ve picked up momentum up for the tech Know expo at the end of this month. We’re preparing for some fun workshops and exhibitions. i don’t know about you, but i’m eager to see how the daVinci robot works. if you are in the market for a new laptop, be sure to enter the drawing for the Dell being given away with the other prizes. technology is moving faster than i can think some days. i hope you’ll join us on march 29 to see the latest in tech so you can be in the Know.

SALUTE

TO VETERANS

Marilyn Ferraris’ military service was full of melodious moments By maria Sonnenberg

While serving her country, Marilyn Ferraris’ weapon of choice was the flute. In fact, the flute has been her favorite instrument since she was six years old, the year her grandfather introduced her to the beautiful musical instrument. Ferraris and the flute have been musical partners for many years. The instrument has served her well, introducing her to new worlds and even to romance. Ferraris was attending San Francisco State in 1954 while juggling two jobs. “I lost one of my jobs and was going to quit college when I heard about an all-girl band in the Air Force,” said the Melbourne resident. Ferraris had been part of a symphonic band in college, playing the flute and the piccolo. Her grandfather had ignited her passion for the instruments with a simple but effective technique, bribery. “He would bribe me with “five-cent” or “ten-cent” marches,” said Ferraris. “If I played right, he would give me the money. My fingers were so small he had to start me on the tin whistle.” The Air Force band required a commitment of three years, a little more than Ferraris wanted at the time, so she opted to join the 60 women who made up the Women’s Army Corp’s version and its

Marilyn Ferraris has loved playing the flute all her life and it was her weapon of choice during her military career.

two-year enlistment. “The WAC band was one of a kind in the Army,” said Ferraris. As a member of the 14th WAC band, Ferraris was tasked with nurturing interest from prospective recruits. “Our main job was to recruit new women to the corps,” she said. “Two months out of the year, we traveled throughout the North and Southeast. We would play concerts in high schools in

the daytime and for the general public at night.” Back at its home base of Ft. McClellan, the band provided musical accompaniment for parades, special ceremonies, march outs and revelry. One big negative, however, was the repetitiveness of the concert program. “The WAC band played the same concert over and over and that got tiring,” she said.

While the songs may have become old hat, the band provided plenty of other excitement, including romance. During a band tour through Tennessee, Ferraris met her first husband, Glenn Reece. She might have turned down the Air Force band, but she didn’t turn down the Air Force career man. “We traveled all over the world and finally ended up at Patrick Air Force Base,” she explained. Remember that Ferraris had had to drop out of college to join the band? Well, the Army paid back the sacrifice through the G.I. Bill, which allowed her to earn an education degree from Rollins College. In 1965, with an itch to perform, Ferraris became one of the founding members of the fledgling Melbourne Municipal Band. Romance blossomed through music again when Ferraris met her second husband, Bob Ferraris, through the Municipal Band. “He was a former Army trumpeter,” she said. “He played taps for many, many funerals at Ft. Dix.” Forty-five years later, she remains active with the Municipal Band. “I still use my grandfather’s old flute,” she said. SL

Indian River Colony Club was one of the few developments in Viera when it was created 25 years ago and nearly 1,300 residents in 771 homes celebrated that bit of history with a full slate of activities Feb. 19 and 20. A not-for-profit, Florida chartered corporation, the 160-acre IRCC was founded in 1986 to provide members with affordable housing and recreational facilities to support an active retirement lifestyle. It was originally meant for retired officers, but now has retired enlisted and civilian residents. “The interesting story is that there really wasn’t anything here 25 years ago,” said silver anniversary event chairman Skip Taylor. “They had to drive in on a dirt road from Wickham. They actually started building in 1989 and now we think we have something special out there.’’ Senior life Photo He said the IRCC Foundation, which helps take care of ailing and elderly employees and residents, The Colony Clowns dispensed candy and good cheer during the Silver Anniversary celebration at Indian River Colony Club on February 19 and 20, 2011. Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island Our destination at Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island is a threehour drive from Brevard, northeast of Jacksonville and well worth the ride. The area has outstanding southern charm, great shopping areas, a wonderful Victorian historic District and a host of sightseeing opportunities. I always recommend your first stop should be the local chamber of commerce. The Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach /Yulee Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center is located at 961687 Gateway Blvd. in Amelia Island. Call 800-226–3542 in advance and have them mail you a Visitors Guide Vacation Planner. Be sure to explore the Amelia Island Museum of History, at 233 South 3rd Street, in a former jailhouse. Guided tours will introduce you to the flags of eight countries that have flown over the harbor and let you glimpse the lives of Timucuan Indians, pirates, shrimpers, nobles and confederates who lived there. The museum is open seven days a week for a modest charge. Visit ameliamuseum.org or call 904-261-7378 for details. Amelia River Cruises has a great sightseeing cruise of the Amelia River and nearby Cumberland Island, or you can ferry to Cumberland Island. There are fees for all ships leaving Fernandina Harbor Marina. Located at 1 North Front Street, you can call 904-261-9972 for full details. A walking guide of the historic district of Fernandina Beach is available

at the chamber. You will enjoy the area’s Victorian-era charm and architecture. The island is home to Florida’s oldest continuously operating bar, The Palace Saloon, located within this sprawling 50-block area of homes and buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Fort Clinch State Park, located on the northern end of Amelia Island is one of the most well preserved 19th century forts in the country. No battles were fought here, but it was garrisoned during both the Civil and SpanishAmerican wars. There are daily tours with period re-enactors that will bring the fort to life for you and your family. There is a modest admission fee. Call 904-277–7274 for details. Amelia Island deserves more than a one-day visit. There are many excellent accommodations downtown on the Amelia River or directly on the Atlantic Ocean that will fit your pocketbook. I recommend you check the calendar at ameliaisland.com to see what exciting events the Chamber is sponsoring and plan your trip according to your preferences. SL

Turn Signals During the past 62 years, I have driven around this country. This included driving through all of the 48 contiguous states, sometimes on eastwest trips, other times north-south trips and often trips in various directions or angles. Yes, over that time I’ve seen great changes in many things, good and bad, but one thing that hasn’t changed in the 26 years I’ve lived in Florida, is the poor driving habits when it comes to signaling. Signaling is an act that a large percentage of Florida drivers don’t do, even though it is the law. I’m referring to using turn signals for both changing lanes and making turns. Why do Florida drivers have less regard for safety than drivers in other states? When it comes to safety and signaling, Florida drivers are unequivocally the worst in the country. I have come to this conclusion having driven various routes in many directions, more than 25 times. Returning from my last trip, I wrote in the trip diary after crossing into Florida, “Well, I can tell I’m back in Florida where hardly anyone uses turn signals.” Watching and observing when stopped at an intersection, I count to

see how the left turners are waiting to give an oncoming car the right-of-way. Even when other Lucy cars are not inKline volved, I have almost always found that only one out of every four drivers uses signals when turning, be it right or left turns. Turn signals on cars took over from the arm out the window and hand signals I learned about when starting to drive in 1948, so “I don’t want to open the window,” is no excuse anymore. Whether it’s turning a corner or changing lanes, most drivers do not signal at all. When changing lanes some will give one flicker as the car is already moving into the other lane. I’ve seen cars in front of me change lanes back and forth and never signal. I’m not sure which causes more near accidents, no signaling or cell phones, but I think they are a neck-and-neck race. I think we need a crackdown on drivers who don’t signal, which is not only the law, but a safety factor. If you’re a driver and reading this, I hope it reminds you to use signals appropriately. Comments always welcome: asklucy3@juno.com. SL

Quick tips to save money By mary hunt

I can’t be completely sure, but I have a feeling that given the collective wisdom of my “Everyday Cheapskate” readers, there’s not a household problem we cannot solve or a sticky situation we cannot rectify. Today’s selection of great reader tips proves that. YAHOO! ELECTRONIC ORGANIZING. Instead of organizing things in three-ring binders, I make folders on my Yahoo mail page where I file my e-mails. So far, I have 24 categories including bills, business, Facebook and health, to name a few. The best thing about this is that I can use the mail search function to find things. The infor-

mation stays there no matter what happens to my computer, because it’s in my stored Yahoo e-mail. — Teresa VASES TO GO. Each spring, my kids want to take flowers to teachers and coaches. To keep my good vases at home, I make disposable kid-friendly ones by trimming off the narrow tops of plastic water and juice bottles. Presto! Vases that won’t break and don’t have to be returned. — Audrey MONTHS TO SPEND. In my efforts to curb spending, I decided that every other month, I wouldn’t spend any more than my normal budgeted monthly amount. So because I spent money in

January, I didn’t in February. And if I spend in March, I won’t in April. I’ve been doing this for a while, and it works great. It helps me control impulse buying, eliminates the back and forth of “should I or shouldn’t I?” and really saves me money. — Kathleen WATER BOTTLE SOCKS. I keep water bottles in the freezer to grab for sports and activities. I cut off the stretchy top of a worn sport sock to place around the bottom of the bottle to soak up the moisture as the bottle thaws. —Chris MARBLES IN THE LAUNDRY. I make my own liquid laundry detergent. To keep the liquid mixed, I put a few

marbles in the storage jug. When I shake the container, the marbles help mix everything. — Christy EFFICIENT CLEANING CYCLE. Once a month, I change the box of baking soda in my refrigerator. That same day, I run vinegar through my coffee maker. I then pour that old box of baking soda into my kitchen sink drains and follow it with the vinegar that just cleaned my coffeepot. Then I follow that with water that I’ve run through the coffee maker. I’m getting the most efficiency out of several household cleaning ideas. — Jennifer SL

Boomer|Senior Expo and magazine launch party By mary Brotherton

The Boomer|Senior Expo held in the Melbourne Auditorium was a tremendous success based on the responses of SENIOR LIFE staff, vendors, club members and models. The culmination of more than a year’s hard work and the efforts of many people, the expo took place on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011 and brought the Boomer|Senior Guide to life as never before. Bigger than ever, with more content, the 2011 Boomer|Senior Guide is in high demand and those on the waiting list are already stopping by for their copies. Since 2007, SENIOR LIFE has published an annual directory to clubs, organizations and support groups and each year, the small magazine has grown with our readership. Still packed with important information tailored for our readers, this year’s publication features articles and more photographs of local models. Some have had professional experience and others were individuals who thought it just might be fun to do something different. Men, women and children answered the call for models and despite the desire to use everyone, the magazine features several dozen local models. Their faces brightened the cover and inside pages of the guide as well as the Boomer|Senior Expo. In addition to the models in blue shirts, the expo featured local businesses, clubs, support groups and interesting organizations as well as demonstrations and exhibitions. The Sons of the American Revolution, English Country Dancers and the Ancient Order of the Hibernians added color to the day’s festivities by arriving in period clothing. The Space Coast Orchid Society, photographers from throughout the county and fused-glass jewelry maker, Carol Fernandez provided their own kind of colorful displays. Brevard Farmer’s Market sold fresh produce and other products while a barbershop quartet serenaded and other music played softly in the background. Attendees brought canned or boxed food and as a result, Second Harvest picked up more than 100 pounds of supplies for its food bank. Attendees and vendors also donated $1 for the generous servings of Uno’s pizza, salad from Southland Suites, sausage sliders made by the Brevard Community Kitchen and baklava from the Carnagie Gardens. The money from the lunch was divided and donated to between Meals on Wheels and the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation. At the end of the day, everyone left with a copy of the 2011 Boomer|Senior Guide; club members took boxes to share and one winner took home a gift certificate for dinner and tickets to see Wicked.

Dr. Saladino Says.... Senior life Martha Masiello

On Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011 the Hurston’s new energy-efficient home is almost complete after an extreme home makeover. The family expects to receive a credit for unused energy at the end of the year. By martha maSiello

Most first-hand observers of the recent ABC-TV Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and LifeStyle Homes Space Coast project were amazed with the number of supporters and volunteers dedicating their time, talents and products to benefit the Joe Hurston family. Many were thrilled to note the numerous energy saving initiatives utilized throughout construction. Bill Webb, marketing specialist for LifeStyle Homes, and Steve Kuehn, public relations representative from Siemens Corporation said the focus was to build the home using net-zero energy technology. Through cost savings technology and innovations provided by Siemens Corporation, the home brings new residential building systems and technology to the average homeowner.

LifeStyle Homes was selected by Extreme Makeover to build the home, started Jan. 8 and completed Jan. 14. Larry Hufford spearheaded the team at LifeStyle Homes with adoption of the net-zero home building protocol using a Sun Smart approach construction, which means no electric bill. “At the end of the year, FPL credit is expected,” said Webb. Voltaic panels, similar to those on the International Space Station, were mounted on the roof, and will produce excess power, with the surplus automatically directed back to FPL, and credited against the power bill, for use when the sun isn’t shining. In addition, the home may qualify for a tax credit on Federal income taxes and may also qualify for additional tax credit for the 80 gallon solar hot water system installed.

Boomers vs Seniors Is the Generation Gap between a senior and a boomer great or small? Does it really exist at all? Does being born a boomer between 1946 and 1964 create vast differences, or are there other aspects of our lives that affect us even more? Well, let’s see. Liselott Stiernelof, who was sworn in as a US citizen on February 11, 2011, is the owner/chef of "Seven - European Cafe" in Melbourne on Wickham. The Millennium Trilogy by Stig Larsson. They are wonderful, not just because he was from Sweden like me. The books have romance, excitement, murder, humor, sex, and everything. The books also tickle your mind. Normally I do horseback riding. This past year I have done less because of time. Now, I jump in my home Jacuzzi.

Arden Larsen of Rockledge is a retired veterinarian who also taught at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine for more than 20 years.

Of all the books you have read which ones stand out in your memory as classics you think everyone should read?

How do you renew your energy?

Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton. It is about apartheid in South Africa. The emotionalism and humanity it describes make it very meaningful. Everyone has similar emotions no matter what race or status in life we have. I’m raising a puppy for Southeastern Guide Dogs, a non-profit organization in Palmetto, Florida. It will then go back to them for special training and be placed.

Massage, red wine and chocolate. But — it must, must be good wine and good chocolate. As long as it’s good, I’m good.

How do you pamper yourself or indulge?

I love to travel. India, Machu Picchu, the Galapagos Islands, South Africa, Namibia, Japan, Zimbabwe, well — and I’ve been all over Europe.

Oh, yeah! Lots of characters. Several of them are my customers — regulars. But, I don’t want to reveal them. No.

Have you met any real “characters lately?

In a way. I am the liaison between the Brevard County Medical Examiner’s Office and Southeast Tissue Alliance, SETA. I review medical cases to see if they are suitable donors.

What was the last live performance or play you watched?

The Man of La Mancha at the Historic Cocoa village Playhouse. I’m pretty much a regular with season tickets and all. We even brought our puppy as part of its training. Those actors were truly fine.

I would like to scuba dive, but I have a shark phobia. I snorkel and swim, but the water around the area is not as clear as I would like it. Of course that wouldn’t help with sharks, (laughs)...

What new skill do you want to master?

I need to become more proficient on my new Apple Computer since I’ve switched from my old PC. My son is a Mac guy who writes musical apps. I need to learn a whole new language for this one.

The Queen of England. I’d love to have grown up in a castle! Or, Cleopatra. She has always fascinated me. That must have been something.

What historical figure would you like to have been buddies with while growing up?

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the Henegar Center for the Arts in Melbourne where I live was really very funny. A friend and I attended, and we both enjoyed it very much.

Be careful. Do research about health care systems. There are lots of problems with health care and hospitals in other countries. These should be studied and not repeated here.

If you could give advice to President Obama, what would it be?

Marie Curie, without a doubt. She was so brilliant! Perhaps some of it could have rubbed off onto me.

Stay the course. Keep on keepin' on!

SpaceCoast boomers Cathryn Leasure, a woman for all seasons By linda S. HumpHrey

Cathryn Leasure won’t be bored. As a classical trombonist, casino dealer, computer instructor to seniors, and fledgling entrepreneur, she has no time for boredom. At home she is wife to Michael, a jazz guitarist and composer, mom to a two-year-old and lover of family dog, Sheba, all of which adds up to an “anything but boring” life. The Melbourne resident was born in Manchester, England, and from the time she was 12, knew she would play the trombone professionally. She was the first female trombonist to be accepted into and graduate from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. “The equivalent of Juilliard in New York City,” she said. Before graduating, Leasure was offered the position of sub-principal trombonist in the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa. “While I was in Durban, a friend took me to a casino. I like skills and learning new things. Often my music didn’t bring in a lot of money,” she said. “I became a casino dealer.” After three years in Durban, Leasure won the trombonist position in the musical Some Like It Hot in London's West End, comparable to Broadway. “Back in Manchester,” she said, “I saw an ad in the Sun, Sand and Sea. They were wanting dealers for the Bahamas.” Her casino career took her to Russia in the mid1990s, she spent three years dealing cards and at roulette tables.

Central Florida Winds will perform at 3 p.m. March 13 at 5625 Holy Trinity Drive, Melbourne. Space Coast Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. March 19 at the First Baptist Church on Merritt Island, 140 Magnolia Ave. Tickets are $10. Call 321-536-8580. Dog Bones Entertainment will perform at a benefit at 3 p.m. March 26, at Riviera United Church of Christ, 451 Riviera Dr. NE, Palm Bay. Contact 321-723-3963.

In 1996, Leasure bought a personal computer and learned to use it. She now uses those skills locally, teaching seniors. “They are private lessons in their homes,” she explained. She also teaches one-on-one trombone lessons at Satellite High School and Brevard Community College. Music remains her first love, and Leasure performs regularly with the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, the Central Florida Winds and with Dog Bones Entertainment, a group of musicians based in Brevard providing music for promotional events for rescue dogs, therapy dogs and dog birthday parties. Aaron Collins, artistic director and conductor for the SCSO, has known Leasure for six years. He said Leasure is, in his opinion, one of the finest musicians in all of Florida. “Cathryn performs roughly 30 concerts a year with me and is passionate about music and music education,” said Collins. “She has great musical sense and plays with ease. SENIOR SENTIMENTS Do you think the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, (Obamacare) should be repealed? Photos by Darrell Woehler and Walter Kiely

Yes. I believe Obamacare should be repealed for sure. I am with a lot of people who think the same. If we do not repeal it we are going to be in bad trouble. Yes, we have to do something for sure, but I do not think the answer is Obamacare. —Jimmy Davis

Absolutely should be repealed, it is going to kill this nation. We are going to be a nation of nothing if they do not repeal it. —Clyde Johnson

I feel it should be repealed, though some improvements need to be done. But if it costs too much, then no, our country is too much in debt now. —Therese Bisson

I feel that people, in general, were against it, but the government passed it anyway for political reasons. The legislators excluded themselves, which is very sad. What does that tell you? —Joseph Doucet

The normal lay person may not know enough about it to say one way or the other—but, I feel that we should have health care for everyone, similar to the European system. —Sandy Illing

Yes. I think it should be repealed only because I do not think we understand it. What would replace it? I do not know, but I just think that we should not go forward unless we understand it. —Barbara Rathborne

No, you should never repeal something unless you have something better to replace it with. —Ann Marie Martino

Though parts of the new health care law are good, I feel that it should be repealed and then start over, with adjustments being made. We must keep an open mind and keep listening to ideas for improvements. —Syd Block

Funny thing is… By SAMMY HADDAD

On March 17 each year we all become Irish for one day. No matter our nationality, on that day, in honor of St. Patrick, we all become Irish. With that in mind I would like to dedicate my column this month to my favorite Irishman, Murphy. That’s right folks. Captain Ed Murphy, a developmental engineer remarked while having trouble with a transducer, the now infamous words, “If anything can go wrong it will.” He entitled it “Murphy’s Law” and it became the spark of a forest fire of corollaries, axioms and extensions more famous than the works of St. Patrick. In case you haven’t heard of Murphy’s Law, I can assure you that you have experienced it. One of the corollaries to “If anything can go wrong it will,” is “and at the worst possible time,” and I would add the extension, “…and there will always be a crowd around to see it.” An axiom to the law would be, “If something falls to the floor, it will roll to the most inaccessible spot under the furniture.” Have you ever lost something, searched everywhere, couldn’t find it, so you went out and bought a new one? What happens as soon as you get home? You

find the original. Murphy’s Law in action. An axiom to that is, “You always find a lost item in the last place you look.” Duh! Really? Have you ever broken an appliance, waited days for the repairman to finally show up, and when he turns it on it works perfectly? Murphy. Buttered a piece of bread and dropped it? Which side hits the floor? Murphy. How come a drought always starts the day you fertilize your lawn and ends when you schedule your next round of golf? Murphy. So on March 17 when you hoist that pint of green beer above your head in tribute to the Irish, and the server accidentally bumps into you spilling it in your lap, remember the most famous Irishman is smiling somewhere and saying, “See, told ya.” Dr. Sammy SL

Old scholar still at it after six degrees By GeorGe White

Bill Willmot of Merritt Island has never quenched his thirst for education. Even after having attended 35 colleges and earned six degrees, he continues to learn. Now in his 26th year at University of Central Florida at its Cocoa campus, he has taken a total of 228 courses worth 684 hours there. Originally from Linden, N.J., Willmot started out in World War II as an Army machine gunner and became a radioman for better career prospects. “I was very fortunate because their (the Army’s) philosophy was to send people to school. I would say I went to school at least once a year somewhere in the United States, not only in government schools, but they would send me to colleges. After I first got started, I found that I enjoyed it,’’ he said. In 1963, he was hired by NASA, retiring in 1979 as an emergency preparedness officer. He worked another 12 years, first for Pan Am and later for CSR. In addition to his studies, Willmot has taught writing at Brevard Community College and UCF in Cocoa. He still regularly tutors for free. Willmot, who still audits classes, has earned a law degree from

Blackstone School of Law, a bachelor’s degree of general studies, a master’s of science in Contracts and Contracts Administration at Florida Tech, a masters of education from Stetson University, a PhD in counseling psychology and a doctorate in clinical psychology. Currently he is taking Group Dynamics, War and Society, Communication Technology and Change and Police and Society. “I don’t need any more degrees and I don’t need any more credits. It’s more like taking a refresher course. I just enjoy it. You get to meet so many young and interesting people,’’ he said. He has a record of every course he’s taken including every teacher from high school forward. Willmot’s advice for getting the most out of college is to get to know your professors and never stop learning. “Education is a big part of my life and any knowledge I have I’m glad to share. Continuing education gives you a very positive outlook on life and fresh ideas. I feel very strongly that everybody should continue their education any way they can and I don‘t mean just going to college. I‘m talking about reading and there are a lot of good courses on DVD,’’ he said. P.O. BOX 3344 COCOA, FL 32924

continued from page 1

Q: Are the environments on the moon and Mars very different from each other? A: Mars’ rotational period is almost the same as Earth’s and Mars also has seasonal changes. The moon’s size, surface gravity and temperature variations are completely different. One thing they do have in common is that they both have water! Q: What are some of the important components such as fuel production, food production in microgravity and the availability of water? A: I will discuss some of the components in my presentation in regard to the work being done by my group to further knowledge of food production and the process for obtaining water from the surface of the moon and Mars.

Q: The space program has resulted in many spin-offs in use today. Do you expect future projects to also be beneficial to society on Earth? A: We will continue to require new innovations as we seek answers to space exploration and the requirements to live and work in space. Q: Your job seems exciting and futuristic. Do you enjoy imagining the future and helping plan to make it reality? A: My job is exciting in that I have the unique opportunity to share the contributions of my team in their on-going search for new ways to improve life for the peoples of Earth. To hear NASA’s Carol Moore in person, visit the Tech Know Expo on Tuesday, March 29 at the Viera High School in Viera. Segways — New sightseeing transportation

Chris Morrill, a walking, talking, riding billboard for EZ Ridn Rentals in Cocoa Beach, Fla., shares his joy of the only pollution-free sightseeing option in Brevard County on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011. By GeorGe White

Also located in South Yarmouth, Cape Cod, Mass., EZ Ridin Rentals is the only place to rent electric Segways in Brevard County. The family-owed business opened its first Brevard location at 229 W. Cocoa Beach Causeway in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Segways utilize state-of-the-art gyroscope technology to keep the mobile unit upright. Riders need to slightly shift their weight in the direction they wish to go and the vehicle begins to move up to 12 miles per hour. The Segway is silent, pollution free and easy to learn, according to manager Chris Morrill. “Most people are up and running and ready to go in about 10 minutes,’’ he said. The company encourages its customers to use the bike path running along SR 520 from Cocoa Beach to Merritt Island. The trip, which takes about an hour to complete, offers views of the Banana River and Port Canaveral. “What’s great is once they get on the sidewalk, they don’t have to worry about cars and they often get to see dolphins and other wildlife. They go over one causeway and like to stop at the top for the view,’’ Morrill said. Segways can be rented hourly for $60 or for a full day but there often are specials and Florida residents are one-third off. Morrill said that business has been building since opening in November. “We’re doing pretty well considering we opened at the slowest time of the year,’’ he said. Segways also give tourists a way to get around the area without adding another vehicle on crowded local roadways. “We are hopeful that other area businesses will also see the benefit of this new activity by giving our visitors more mobility to explore and shop in Cocoa Beach with less vehicle traffic,” he said. Serving Brevard County for 13 Years

Marketing Brevard County’s historical resources with three “heritage tourism loops highlighting destinations in north, central and south will be one of the focuses of the Cultural Heritage Tourism Symposium. The event, sponsored by the Brevard County Historical Commission, will be held March 5 at Brevard Community College building 14. “We’ve been wanting to do this for a long time,’’ said commission member Roz Foster of Titusville, who was appointed to represent District 1, which includes the historic Pritchard House and St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church. “We’ve wanted to bring all the historians and people involved with museums and local historians together to take inventory of all the projects separated by north, central and south. They usually don‘t interact and never talk to each other. There are a lot of sights in each area but nobody knows for sure what the other areas are

doing,’’ Foster said. Topics to be discussed in the day-long symposium using separate meetings, and large maps for each region, include current historic districts and sites, existing outreach and education programs, programs to add, presently used tools and resources, current networking tools and what each district is actively doing to promote historic preservation and heritage tourism. The keynote speaker on the topic of the economic impacts of historic preservation will be Scott Stroh, director of the Division of Historical Resources. He will present results of a statewide survey completed in September 2010. In a letter invitation to local groups, the county historical commission wrote: “We anticipate that the workshop will provide insight into how heritage tourism can benefit your organization/project, business and community, and provide information about valuable resources.’’ A final combined meeting at the end of the day

The Platinum Coast Orchid Society’s 48th Annual Orchid Show takes place April 29 through May 1 in Cocoa. Admission is $4 per person, with a portion of the proceeds going to charity. Parking is free. Friday and Saturday, the show runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday’s hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show will feature spectacular orchid exhibits created by commercial growers and amateur exhibitors. The growers will have thousands of orchid plants for sale to the general

public. Some of the vendors are from the immediate area and throughout the state, while others are from international locations. The Orchid Society will have a large potting booth available to divide and repot orchids for a nominal fee. The courtesy booth will be staffed by members of the Society to give orchid growing information, in addition to providing advice and assistance to the public. There will be frequent drawings for beautiful orchid plants and other prizes throughout the duration of the show. A wide range of orchid growing supplies will also be avail-

Dear Gramma Dear Gramma: My grandson and his girlfriend are coming to visit us. We’re happy to be included in their vacation plans, but aren’t comfortable with their sharing a bedroom in our home since they’re not married. Should we tell them before they arrive so they can decide if they still want to come or should we wait until they’re here? We have the extra room so can accommodate each of them in a separate room. —Old-Fashioned Nana Dear Old-Fashioned Nana: Your home is your castle and you have every right to set the standards of behavior within. Telephone your grandson now and in your kind Nana voice, tell him what you wrote in your note to me. An advance notice will give them the option of staying with you, going to a hotel and visiting with you during the day or not coming at all. Gramma Holly Fox Vellekoop, MSN, is the author of “How to Help When Parents Grieve” and “STONE HAVEN: Murder Along the River.” A retired Penn State University clinical instructor with six grandchildren, Vellekoop has a Master of Science degree in nursing. This grandmother is a doula By linda S. HumpHrey

Elizabeth Brookley loves bringing babies home—that is evident with her large family consisting of four children, 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. But her love of babies goes beyond her own family to many new mothers she has assisted for more than a decade. Brookley’s interest picqued after seeing an ad in a newspaper for classes training certified childbirth educators. “I went to a meeting and it turned my professional world around,” she said. “I took the training and then was observed as an instructor.” Brookley said her life went from childbirth educator to that of a trained doula. Doula, a Greek word meaning “woman who serves,” fits Brookley who loves mothering mothers. In this age, she said, when an expectant mom might not have family nearby to encourage and comfort her, it makes sense to have outside support. “A doula does not replace the support system, they are there to strengthen it by doing whatever is needed for the new family.” she said. A doula’s goal is to provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support through birth and during the immediate postpartum period. Brookley said she was fortunate to be the labor-delivery doula for her granddaughter in 2003. Terri Reichley, mother of 7, was a founding member in the 1970s of Childbirth Education League of Brevard now known as Birth Resources of Brevard. She is also an active doula. “I met Liz Brookley through childbirth education classes. She is an amazing woman, so full of life, and professional,” said Reichley. “As a teacher, she impressed us immediately with her ability to engage students, helping them see the value of what they learned and connect them to their families.” Birth Resources of Brevard works

Dr. Wayne Dyer: An envoy for motivation and inspiration By linda S. HumpHrey

Dr. Odile Bagwell teaches class.

When a doctor’s office becomes a classroom By darrell woeHler

At certain times of the month, part of the office of Dr. Odilie Bagwell is turned into what resembles a college classroom, complete with cafeteria line for food for the students and PowerPoint presentations. Her office in the Solana Center Shopping Mall at 4200 SR 524, Suite 103, Cocoa, is a multi-office audio center. In February, she held the first of five free aural rehabilitation classes to be given over the next five months for her patients, who have received various hearing devices. The classes are designed to provide them with follow-up adjustments and information on how to cope with hearing and listening for the rest of their lives. Odilie rhymes with totally, which exemplifies the dedication and service she gives her patients. Dr. Bagwell’s classes include communication strategies beyond the use of hearing aids, the emotional aspects of hearing loss, providing community

and Internet resources, as well as speech reading and auditory training with hearing aids. Ten student/patients attended the first in the series of five classes, and learned tips for listening, including the trick of concentration, avoiding pretending to understand, asking people to repeat what was said and arriving early for group functions in order to position oneself close to the presenter. A graduate of the University of Florida, Bagwell also trained at Shands Teaching Hospital, had a Veterans Administration Fellowship and was Senior Audiologist for Health First Hospital. Her personal mission statement is to change people’s lives by providing them with their best possible hearing so they can interact naturally in society. Her goal is not only to enhance hearing, but to enlighten others by seeing how hearing can enhance their journeys in life. For more information, call 321-504-4327 or visit CocoaHearingAids.com. SL

ayne W. Dyer, Ph.D., is an internationally renowned author and speaker in the field of self-development. On Jan. 26, Dyer held the attention of about 2,000 people in the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale as he shared a few nuggets from his latest work, Mastering the Art of Manifestation. Dyer, appearing casual in Bermuda-length shorts, a black T-shirt and sandals, which he promptly removed, greeted the audience telling them that he lived on manna and was “extraordinarily ordinary. As unique and special as he is to his faithful fans, he does have a way of making all in attendance believe that they can live a life that is fulfilling and peaceful no matter where they are and what is happening in their lives. He shared that he spent 10 years in an orphanage as a child, has experienced divorce and is now battling leukemia. He has been dubbed the “Father of Motivation, but said he would trade that title for

“Father of Inspiration. In Mastering the Art of Manifestation, Dyer explores his most astonishing subject yet: the power of attracting your needs and desires into your life through meditation. He challenged the crowd with one-liners including, “Don’t die with your music still in you and “Arrange whatever pieces come your way. Barbara Granger, a resident of Davie, Florida who visits family in Brevard frequently, attended the conference at the urging of a relative. She was not familiar with Dyer before the event but came away impressed and convinced that his theories may work. “It was tempting at first, when I was listening to Dr. Dyer, to think that maybe what he does is just a gimmick to make money, said Granger. “Then as the night progressed, I started thinking that he not only has the right idea, he has lived it. It’s the same principle as in the old musical The

Music Man, Dr. Dyer is promoting the “Think Systemâ€? and if you think it, it will happen.â€? Some of the points shared by Dyer included removing limits in your life that prevent you from making changes or achieving your highest goals, doing what you love to do in life and being patient while waiting for good things to happen. Granger said, “It’s easy to see how true that is in the little things like when you walk out the door on a beautiful day and say to yourself, ‘It’s going to be a great day!’ and it is. It’s a little harder when the mortgage company calls and you think, ‘I need money.’ The fact is that if you say and believe that you are rich, your life will start changing because you will start doing a better job at work, you will start being more open to new ideas. You will see that you are already rich in a lot of ways other than financially and something will come along to boost your actual finances as well.â€? For there being only one winner, this turned out to be almost a family affair. Alice Simon, (third from left) a resident of Crane Creek Senior Apartments, is being honored as the 10,000 passenger picked up by a Joe’s Club van to participate in Joe’s Club activities. Simon won a $100 gift card to Amici’s Restaurant. Lee Smith, (far left) was the first resident from Crane Creek to utilize Joe’s Club van service. Tim Timmermann (second from left), is the director of transportation for Joe’s Club. In the group on the right is (l-r) Faith Gail Mertens, a Crane Creek resident; Diane DeYorgi, manager of Crane Creek; and Joe Durso, the van driver for Joe’s Club who picked up Alice for her memorable ride.

Coastal Community Church gives the gift of Marvin Goldstein By linda S. HumpHrey

Senior life Linda S. Humphrey

Cocoa, Fla. resident Cary Troxel (L) invited Marvin Goldstein, his lifelong friend and acclaimed pianist, and vocalist Vanessa Joy to perform at Coastal Community Church on Friday, Feb. 4, 2011

Thank you Coastal Community Church for bringing several hundred people from all walks of life and religious backgrounds together in Port St. John for a celebration of music that transcended titles or denominations. The Feb. 4 concert with acclaimed pianist Marvin Goldstein and vocalist Vanessa Joy was the result of a lifelong friendship between CCC member Cary Troxel and the world-traveling musician. Troxel and Goldstein, friends for 50 years, first met in middle school in Fort Lauderdale. “I can remember Marvin carrying around an accordion the size of a Buick,” laughed Troxel. “We’ve stayed in touch. I asked him to come and perform at our church. He said ‘yes.’ ” Those attending the free two-hour performance were captivated with Goldstein’s humor and talent on the

ivories and with the wonderful message in song by vocalist Vanessa Joy. Goldstein chose selections from Phantom of the Opera, Fiddler on the Roof and whimsical standards. Perhaps the highlight of the night was a 15-minute video of the life of Christ featuring hymns and special arrangements performed by Joy. Goldstein began his musical training at age 9, receiving a scholarship to Tel Aviv University School of Music at age 18. Raised in Jewish tradition, in 1985, he converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon). He now takes his “life’s work” around the globe to audiences of all races, creeds and religions. He and Joy toured Egypt with the U.S. Embassy at the end of 2010. “Talking can only go so far, music goes beyond,” said Goldstein. CCC may be one of the best-kept secrets in Port St. John. The large steel facility has housed worshipers since last summer. Members met at the local community center prior to the completion. Three services on the weekends bring in between 500-700 attendees, said associate pastor Robert Gaulin. Services are held at 6 p.m. on Saturday and at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. on Sunday. The church is located at 5795 Falcon Blvd., Port St. John. For information, call 321-639-7346 or visit www.coastalcommunity.net. If your church or organization will sponsor a special Easter event, please contact Linda Humphrey at ahnie2@aol.com by March 10. SL

New course keeps feet healthy

Residents of The Fountains in Melbourne often get their legs rubbed, feet massaged and nails trimmed for free without leaving the comfort of their community because they have volunteered as guinea pigs for nurses of a foot care and nail course that is hosted at the assisted and independent living facility. Stacey Clark, R.N., and assistant executive director of The Fountains, was approached in 2009 by Shelly BurdetteTaylor, CEO of TayLORD Health, which prepare R.N.s to test for the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses Foot and Nail Care Certification board exam. “She has family here in Melbourne and was looking for an eastern location to hold her courses,” Clark said. “I thought it was really good. Sometimes you get podiatrists that come and take care of resident’s feet, but it’s not a holistic approach, so it has raised my awareness to not just their feet but their legs too.” Taylor, board certified in wound and foot care with a Ph.D in nursing education, lives in San Diego, Calif., but travels

Antiques or Junque By anne MccollaM

Q: The pictured small pitcher belonged to my great-grandfather. We think it must be over 150 years old. Standing approximately 5 inches tall, it is in mint condition and decorated with a metallic finish and a wide blue band. There is no manufacturer’s mark. I would appreciate any information you can provide. A: You have a copper luster cream pitcher that was probably made in Staffordshire, England, around 1850. A plethora of copper luster pieces were made in the early to late 1800s and they were usually not marked with the name of the manufacturer. Your pitcher is collectible and would probably be worth $75 to $125. Q: I would like some information on my serving bowl. Decorated with a Western saddle and cowboy boots against a tan background, it is 12 inches in diameter. Marked on the back, you will see the words: "Wallace China — Los Angeles, Calif." A: The Wallace China Co. made your bowl. It was located in Vernon, Calif., from 1931 to 1964. Created by Western artist and cowboy, Till Goodan, the pattern is “Boots and Saddle.” “Boots and Saddle,” “Pioneer Trails” and “Rodeo” were three of his most famous patterns. His signature can usually be found somewhere in the designs. Buyer beware! Some of his designs have been reproduced. New pieces do not include “Wallace China” or “California” in the mark. Your bowl is circa 1940s, and it can be seen selling in antiques shops for $240 and up. SL
