you can tell by the roadside sign holders that it’s tax season again, but you don’t have to pay to get help with your taxes through volunteers with the america association of Retired persons (aaRp). more than 65 volunteers throughout the county keep regular hours at public libraries and other locations and are trained and ready to help, according to volunteer coordinator don mcdonald of Rockledge. “We get all the information through the Internal Revenue

service (IRs) and all the volunteer preparers have to complete a test to get certified. all and all, I think we do better than some of these storefront operations. We do everything electronically and it’s all e-filed now,” he said. mcdonald said he has seen an impact from the availability of tax software like turbotax, mostly from younger filers who are adept at filing online, but not everybody has access to computers or computer skills. “I think we did more returns last year – probably about 5,000 to 6,000 countywide. We get repeat

customers every year and they pass the word along so there are always new faces,” he said. each participant is given 30 minutes with an aaRp volunteer to complete the returns. “they know there are other companies out there for tax help, but they also know that they charge too much,” he said. ellie Barnett of viera drove to the cocoa Beach public library for help that resulted in a refund. “I needed help. When you’re a retiree, you need all the help you can get,” she said.

We encourage organizations to contact Senior Life with information and dates regarding upcoming community-oriented events by email and mail. 1

hello friends, I enjoyed meeting so many of our readers last month at the Boomer senior Guide expo. more than 2,000 people showed up at the valiant air command Warbird museum to pick up the first copies of the 2012 Boomer Senior Guide and to visit the many entertaining booths that were there. vendors and guests alike dressed up in costumes from the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. We had photo ops all day long! people couldn’t get enough of our cover girl, lonie, or her Rosie counterparts, who seemed to be everywhere that day. the Kiss photo booth was a huge hit, too! visit out Facebook page to see more of the great photos taken that day. since everybody couldn’t join us, this year I put the Guide in your hands by inserting it in a portion of the march issue of Senior Life. I hope you will enjoy reading it. the new publix store, a hybrid as it referred to, will open in viera on march 17. this is the third store of its kind, the others being in atlanta and naples. stop by to see the new store when you have time. It is located on the corner of stadium dr. and viera Boulevard. It will be an amazing shopping experience. as always, thank you for reading and sharing the paper with your friends. We love to receive your comments about the paper in email, by phone or in person.

hula dancing promotes welcoming hawaiian attitude By george white

hilary silva teaches the graceful art of hawaiian hula dancing for ages 7 and up in her nonprofit halau, or hawaiian hula school, which practices in the henegar center for performing arts in melbourne. “Halau Hula O’Lewa Kapa Kai is just a way of showing my love of it, even to beginners, silva said. “It’s a very easygoing attitude of kindness and respect. It’s all inclusive and an unconditional form of welcome. everybody is welcome no matter their ability or age. there are two types of hula: traditional and ancient. “We do both,

but everything I do is following hawaiian protocol, which is called pono, she said. according to silva, she has benefited from instruction from her mentor, Kumu Kawehi punahele of orlando. silva has now been bestowed the title of “Kumu by her mentor, which is considered a huge honor. “the hula dance for me started when I was age 19 and after that, in my 20s, I used it when I was battling morbid obesity. It’s all welcoming and all accepting. I’m so lucky that I’m able to incorporate it all, she said. the school started in march 2011 with nine dancers and now has grown to more than 25. currently, they are practicing to

someone recently remarked that I looked “all-business” at the Boomer senior Guide expo at the valiant air command Warbird museum last month. I must have been in my serious newsboy mode, because I can assure you that it was the most fun I’ve ever had at a senior life event. the energy was amazing and it was contagious. We had 1940s-style music going all day and if you were there, you heard me yelling, “extra! extra!” throughout the day. I loved seeing how involved our readers were and how many people dressed up in period attire to attend the expo. It was like a masquerade party without the masks. We had food, free rootbeer floats, genuine war heroes and some of the most creative vendors I’ve ever met. they really got into the theme with their booths. so many members of the senior life family were there, doing all they could to ensure everyone had a good time, and judging from the comments we’ve received, I think we succeeded. thanks to everyone who stopped by to tell us hello. If you didn’t make to this event, I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events. they are always such fun! I hope you have a great march! mary@myseniorlife.com

Project Search overcomes challenges By darrell woehler

Project Search sounds like a board game you might play on a rainy weekend, but it is anything but, as evidenced by the 25 participants who attended a Feb. 13 luncheon at Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center Auditorium. The attendance swelled to more than 100, as members of various community businesses as well as Health First departments lent their support. Project Search is a nationwide endeavor with the specific goal of incorporating persons with disabilities into the work force.

It is the brainchild of Susie Rutkowski of Cincinnati, who at the time was a school coordinator in that Ohio city. Someone called and needed an employee quickly, and a person with disabilities was available. It grew from there. Project Search is now a worldwide organization that has more than 20 programs in Florida, of which Health First is an active participant. Rutkowski was the keynote speaker for the luncheon and gave an update of the program’s progress. The program has to have the backing of top management for it to be effective, and Health First has given that backing.

Five years ago, Bob Walters, director of human resource operations for Health First, went to Cincinnati to visit and to find out first hand how the program worked. Since then, Health First has had 46 people go through this program. According to Maria Trieste, project placement coordinator for Project Search, the program entails nine months of training, both on-the-job and in classrooms. It is geared to each individual who enters, based on his or her particular disability, desires and ambitions. Schedules are often based on the local school system’s operating

don’t think so. Girls showing off muscles under their arms? When was the last time you wanted to feel the development of someone’s armpit? skinny guys who have lost so much weight that a baseball bat has a better shape. Whoa, is that what we’re supposed to look like? don’t get me wrong. I’ve tried the exercise thing and there are good things to it. like when it ends. I find myself straining just to get my shoes on. Is it a bad sign when you pull a muscle while putting on a corset meant to keep you from pulling a muscle? let’s get real. like it or not, after your workout you’re still going to look like you. actually, you’ll look and smell like a boat pulled you through a polluted lake without skis, but it’ll still be you. since passing age 50, I think I look a lot better to my partner when I’m sitting next to a thick juicy steak with a glass of chablis. dr. sammy SL

If a good diet will lead to a long life, why does the term start with the word “die”? and if a workout is supposed to be fun, why does it start with the word “work”? lastly, is it an oxymoron to “sit and watch” exercise tv? there’s a great idea. sit and watch someone else exercise. I did, and truthfully, most of those people don’t look so good to me. Well, they’re either so skinny I want to jump through the tube and offer them a Big mac, or they have muscles bulging out of places that make them look like one of those cheap halloween costumes. I mean, come on. muscles bulging out of your neck and veins looking like they’re about to explode is the look we’re going for? I

an interesting and educational destination in melbourne is a leisurely walk through the campus of the Florida Institute of technology, also known as FIt. It is an independent private technical research university. as of 2011, FIt had an on-campus student body of almost 4,000. they were nearly equally divided between graduate- and undergraduate-level students majoring in engineering and the sciences. these fields of education are the ones that are in greatest demand today by america’s business and industry. I would suggest you start by entering the campus on university Boulevard and Babcock street and park anywhere they allow visitor parking. the best area to park would be in front of the clemente center on the south side of university Boulevard as you enter. start your visit at the clemente center, which contains a sports and recreation area, swimming pools, and the panther dining hall. the dining hall is a great place to enjoy an excellent meal at a reasonable price with students and faculty. Following lunch, take a self-guided tour of the botanical gardens. pick up your walking guide at the evans library, located on the north-east side of the campus. these unique gardens, also called the “Jungle,” contain more than 200 palms, bamboos and other rare and common botanical specimens. as you enter the gardens, on your left will be melbourne’s first one-room schoolhouse. this schoolhouse was

Radio commercials

Remember when, before tv, we listened to programs on radio? Remember when, commercials on tv occurred at the half-way point on half-hour programs, plus at the beginning and at the end? Remember when, hour programming had commercials at the 15-minute points, total of five commercials from beginning to end? now try to remember when radio programs had commercials as part of the comedy of the program verbalized by a cast member. If that last one rings a bell in your memory, you can remember the George Burns and Gracie allen show on radio or perhaps the Jack Benny Radio show. today, we have to put up with so many different commercials on hourlong programs that it seems there is a commercial about every 10 minutes, interrupting the flow of the story, each commercial for a different product. the half-hour commercial break actually takes a full five minutes or more. the others are a little shorter, but that gives us an hour-long program with 38 minutes of story once it finally starts, to the point of the last commercial starting. the time allotted to commercials from beginning to end of the hour adds up to 22 minutes. the difference of commercials in the past was brought to my memory recently when I received a gift of six audio tapes, 12 sides, that enabled me to listen to a dozen of the old half-

12

hour programs of My Point Burns & Allen. of View over the years they changed sponsors and the tapes are a Lucy mixture of the comKline mercials for maxwell house coffee, “good to the last drop,” as told by Bill Goodwin on most of the programs and “swan, the floating soap,” when sponsors changed. But the story line didn’t stop for a commercial. Rather, the cast member doing this was part of the story and cast. he went into talking about the product during the story line as he told all about the product to another member or guest of that evening’s program. occasionally there were other announcers who did the product pitch that they tied into the story line. ed Goodwin and toby Reid are two names I hear when I listen to the tapes. the big difference from this method about sponsors is that the pitch flowed right into the story line and wasn’t a commercial that interrupted the story to which we were listening. today, the screen changes, the story stops and the sound often blasts louder than in the old days. the only advantage to today’s method I can see is that I use commercial time to hit the mute button, get up to do other things and not waste time watching or listening to commercials. comments always welcome — asklucy3@juno.com. With all of the communications devices and electronic tools, it seems it would be easy to send messages to others. the older you get, the more challenges you face with acronyms and emoticons. the acronym is a word formed from the initial letter or letters of each successive part. For example, hmo stands for health maintenance organization. an emoticon is a pictorial representation of a facial expression using punctuation marks and letters to express a person’s mood. For example, :) at the end of message represents a smiley face. your grandchildren may send them. If you have ever spent time in the military, in government service or at an educational institution, you will be familiar with all of the alphabet-type of lingo, the acronym. consider the cumbersome area of medical insurance. there is a ppo – preferred provider organization, contrasted with the hmo – health maintenance organization. now we have the mco – managed care organization along with the emc – engaging memory care. When you go to a medical facility, you will find the md – medical doctor, or a do – doctor of osteopathy. these doctors can belong to a pa – professional association or an llc – limited liability corporation. the pac – physician’s assistant certified is skilled in working with a doctor. do not be confused with a cpa, who could be a certified psychiatric aid or a certified

Warbird air show to honor doolittle’s Raid By george white

the 2012 valliant air command tIco Warbird airshow march 9 through 11 will be dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the famous “doolittle Raiders,” considered one of the greatest and most unusual aerial attacks in aviation history. the u.s. response to the Japanese dec. 7, 1941 attack on pearl harbor was to transport 16 B-25 bombers aboard the aircraft carrier uss hornet to bomb Japan. By demonstrating that Japan itself was vulnerable to american air attack, it provided a vital morale boost and opportunity for u.s. retaliation. the original idea was to fly to china afterward, but all airplanes were ditched after the bombing run instead. many of the pilots were helped by allied sympathizers to escape capture by the Japanese, explained terry yon, public relations officer with the valiant air command. “after the attack on pearl harbor on dec. 7 (1941), we were immediately looking at some way to get back at the Japanese. the idea was to fight in europe first, but we didn’t want to have pearl harbor be unanswered,” yon said. “they wanted to take off closer to Japan,” he added. Fearing the Japanese had spotted the carriers, the planes took off early, leaving too little fuel to make it to china after the bombing runs, according to yon. organizers hope the air show will attract as many B-25s as possible, especially considering a special guest of honor: lt. col. dick cole, 96, of texas, dolittle’s co-pilot. he is the only pilot and one of only five survivors out of the 80 involved in the mission. “We have four B-25s right now and we’re trying to get six. We definitely want to get all the B-25s we can find,’’ yon said. “they tried other bombers but they determined that B-25s were the best for taking off from an aircraft carrier. they weren’t equipped to land (on the carrier) because their landing gear wasn’t strong enough and they didn’t have a tail hook,” yon said, noting the cooperation between branches that enabled B-25s, army aircraft, to be transported by a navy ship. about 40,000 spectators are expected at the 35th annual show that also includes other vintage aircraft like the p-51, p-40, F-104, and modern war birds like the F-22. the non-profit valiant air command was started in 1977 “to perpetuate the history and culture of military aviation, to encourage the gathering of men and women in camaraderie, to research and restore warbirds and serve as an educational tool for young and old alike,” according to its website. the valiant air command museum is located at the space coast Regional airport at 6600 tico Road in titusville. For more information, call 321-268-1941 or visit vacwarbirds.org. SL

helping seniors of Brevard county (hsoBc) is a nonprofit organization that will cultivate an endowment to provide senior care services and bring awareness of existing services for economically distressed residents, according to Joe steckler. steckler said that he told a friend, in 1995, he saw a need to ensure a steady flow of funds for seniors. even today, less than one-tenth of one percent of the county’s money goes toward community-based programs. “seniors make the highest contribution to our budget,” steckler said. “Brevard county is the 24th largest county in the united states with a population over 65.” he said that the care needs of elders in Brevard are exploding and there is a huge gap in assistance for nearly 14 percent of Brevard’s population — those age 55 to 64. a widespread lack of insurance, fluctuations in state and federal dollars and an ignorance of the services available are challenges the aging population must address. this is the only organization that exists solely to raise awareness and funding for senior care and strengthen and underwrite existing programs in a self-sustaining way. steckler said, “the worst thing is not to be known.” to that end, he intends to work with others to ensure that elders know of and can access local programs for early intervention and delay costly institutionalization. Kinds of associations By frank kneiSer, cMca, aMS, PcaM

often, owners will use hoa as a generic term for their association. hoa is actually an abbreviation for homeowners association governed by statute Fl720. homeowners usually own the lot surrounding their home and a percentage of common areas and amenities of the association. condominium associations fall under statute Fl718. owners own only everything inside the paint of their unit. everything outside of the paint, including the building(s), common areas, and amenities is owned by the association and each owner shares a percentage of ownership. Fl723 regulates mobile homes. owners usually own their mobile home and pay rent to a park owner in order to use the common areas and amenities. In some cases, owners own their mobile home and the association owns the common areas and amenities. In this case, owners share a percentage of ownership and most provisions of Fl720 would apply. less common in Florida are cooperative associations regulated by Fl719. owners buy shares in the co-op which owns all units, buildings, common areas, and amenities. these associations generally have some things in common. all are governed by a board of directors usually elected by members. the board has a fiduciary duty to carry out all of the provisions of the articles, declarations, and by-laws. members pay assessments for the maintenance and management of common areas and amenities. associations are usually referred to as deed-restricted, which means owners are required to and agree to abide by all rules and regulations found in the declaration and by-laws.

acclaimed ophthalmologist has made Brevard his home for 25 years By linda wigginS

dr. Frederick ho is celebrating 25 years of success as a noted Brevard ophthalmologist, nearly five of those most recently at his Wickham Road practice in viera, adjacent to his atlantic eye md hospital dedicated to eye surgery. the path that led to the spacious, blue-trimmed, yellow building and great success started half a world away. In addition to international, professional acclaim and awards, that success extends to his private life, which includes melbourneborn wife laurie and their four daughters, who attend Freedom 7 elementary school. In 1949, china fell to communism, spelling doom for the ho family until they could escape to the British colony of hong Kong. of meager means, ho and his siblings studied hard for a shot at greater freedom and opportunities. he was awarded a scholarship to california Institute of technology, where he came to study biology and science at age 18. he was later accepted to medical school, where he focused on maintaining, improving and, in many cases, saving eye sight. “I am not sure why I wanted to pursue the area of vision,” ho said. “maybe it was

because it was something that affected me at a young age, I don’t know, but I will tell you, when I am in a room full of ophthalmologists, nearly every one of them wears glasses, like me.” every immediate member of the ho family eventually emigrated to the united states. china took control of hong Kong in 1997. ho moved his practice from eau Gallie to viera, an area that would continue to grow in his two demographics. one group is seniors, who keep his surgery busy with cataract removal and placement of intraocular lenses. another top concern is macular degeneration, which results in advancing blindness of all but peripheral vision. his other focus is pediatric ophthalmology. premature birth can result in the need for surgery and the use of corrective devices. While rare in the healthy, full-term baby, ho performs various surgeries to focus the direction of the eyes. another common treatment is for sports and other injuries that may break the orbital bones of the face surrounding the eyes. For more information, or for a calendar of event to mark the 25-year milestone throughout this year, go to drho.cc.

do you experience leg pain or cramps that stop you in your tracks, numb or cold toes, slow-healing foot sores? these could be signs of a serious problem that is prevalent among seniors in this country. approximately five million americans suffer from peripheral arterial disease (pad) and the risk of developing pad increases with age. are you at risk, or could you already have this debilitating condition? pad occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries responsible for carrying blood to the limbs. over time, this limits the flow of oxygen-rich blood, resulting in leg pain or cramping made worse with walking or activity. other signs include numb or weak legs, slow healing sores, cold feet, and skin color changes. typically, leg pain goes away with rest but returns when reengaging in activity. often people with pad have leg pain but don’t experience other symptoms. untreated pad increases the risk of amputation or stroke. If you are over the age of 70, have a family history of pad, or are africanamerican, you are at an increased risk. other factors include cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, obesity and physical inactivity. If you have leg pain or other symptoms, be screened immediately. When symptoms are not present, get screened if you have one of the risk factors above. a simple screening may save your life. treatment begins with lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, increasing physical activity, losing weight and developing healthy eating habits. additional treatment includes medication management of blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes and/or reestablishment

When you think of port canaveral, you may think of the big ships, the carnival Dream, Royal caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas or the disney Magic, but with the times being what they are, perhaps security should be first on your mind. that’s where the u.s. coast Guard comes into play. nestled on a 10-acre tract of land on the north side of the channel, with a street address of 9235 Grouper Road, cape canaveral, the coast Guard and the u. s. department of homeland security provide protection for a broad area of waterways. their area of operations includes the port and channel, areas from the mosquito lagoon to the north, malabar Road to the south, and up to 50 miles offshore as well as the Indian and Banana rivers. one of the vessels from this coast Guard station goes on extended tours, patrolling a large part of the caribbean sea. While on a tour of port canaveral and the shipping channel, chief Warrant officer 3 Jim dubea, station commander, and several members of his team provided information on various port activities, including the large fuel tank farm, various ships that enter and depart on a daily

basis, the u.s. navy base nearby and his own fleet of ships, cutters and patrol boats. the tour was aboard a response boat medium, manned by a crew of three: petty officers dani J. Garcia, a one-year coast Guard veteran from titusville; William amezquita, a six-year coast Guard veteran, and dwayne matthews, also a six-year veteran, both of patrick air Force Base. Before shoving off, the senior ranking person gave a threat assessment of six different aspects for consideration. after the tour of the port and channel, an additional tour was provided of the 210-foot medium endurance cutter, Confidence. It had just recently returned from a nearly twomonth tour of the caribbean sea where it had made numerous drug interceptions near various islands and on the sea. smaller patrol boats can be launched from the Confidence in short fashion, as the situation may dictate. there is also a helicopter flight/landing deck on the upper level. ensign mike ahlin provided the tour aboard the Confidence. cutter commander matthew meilstrup commands a crew of 75. there are a total of 300 personnel stationed at the u.s. coast Guard station, port canaveral, though most all are housed at various surrounding military and civilian facilities.

health & wellness Medicare expands its list of preventive services Dear lynne: For 2012, I’m trying a more healthy approach to my life. I understand that there are some changes to Medicare’s coverage of preventive services. What are they so I can take advantage of these services? an apple a Day

Ask Lynne Lynne Meagher SHINE

dear apple a day: medicare has expanded its list of preventive care services offered to help keep you healthy or to prevent illness. you can get many of these services for free, without having to pay a coinsurance or deductible. some of these include the annual wellness visit, flu shots, and tests like prostrate cancer screenings and mammograms. during your first year on medicare, you are eligible for a welcome-to-medicare preventive doctor visit, and then yearly you are eligible for an annual wellness visit. Both of these services will help your doctor monitor your health annually. For most preventive services, you will pay nothing out of pocket if you have original medicare and see providers who accept assignment. however, you will have to pay a deductible or coinsurance if your doctor needs to order further tests or procedures to treat a problem found during a preventive screening. For instance, if a doctor removes a polyp during a screening colonoscopy, that preventive service has now become diagnostic. medicare will still cover it, but you may have to pay some of the cost. new for this year are screenings for depression, obesity, and alcohol misuse for individuals at risk for alcohol abuse. additionally, if you are in a medicare advantage plan, your plan cannot charge you for preventive-care services that are free for people on original medicare as long as you see in-network providers. shIne (serving health Insurance needs of elders) is an award winning, statewide volunteer-based program that provides free, unbiased counseling and information for people on medicare, their families, and their caregivers. shIne is a program of the Florida department of elder affairs, administered in partnership with the state’s 11 area agencies on aging. In Brevard county, our area agency on aging is the senior Resource alliance located in both cocoa and orlando. If you have questions about medicare preventive care benefits or if you have a question you would like the ask lynne column to answer, please write or email lynne at info@myseniorlife.com and look for a response in one of the next issues. to contact a shIne counselor for more immediate assistance with your questions, call the elder helpline at 321-504-2038. In 2011, Brevard county shIne volunteers had nearly 6,000 contacts

with medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers, which is a 35 percent increase from the previous year. additionally, volunteers reached almost 9,000 clients at events in the community, including health fairs and presentations. of the nearly 6,000 client contacts, more than 1,100 were with clients that are on medicare due to a disability and more than 2,700 were clients with low incomes. SALUTE

Green Beret considers himself a citizen soldier By Maria Sonnenberg

he calls himself a citizen soldier, because retired army lt. col. Robert lomenzo spent a lifetime shifting between military and civilian careers. the new york city boy, who first saw the light of day sept. 24, 1933, joined the army as soon as he turned 18, for entering military service was expected in lomenzo’s circle of friends and family. “It was a rite of passage in those days,” he explained. “all your relatives had been in World War II and you wanted to do your part.” lomenzo thought the military would be a piece of cake for a young, smart Italian-american from “the Big apple,” the epicenter of the world. “I was beyond cocky,” he said. In 1952, after basic training at Fort Bliss, the rookie soldier was assigned to the 45th Infantry division in Korea. By 1953, he had plenty of experience as a gunner in half-tracks, the hybrid personnel carrier that had the stamina of a tank coupled with the handling of a wheeled vehicle. the work was perfect for the kid from new york. “Within eight months, I was sergeant first class,” lomenzo said. after long months in Korea, lomenzo pined for the bright lights of his hometown. “I went to my commanding officer and told him I wanted to go home,” he

said. “he told me I had two options: to go airborne or die.” lomenzo opted for the former choice, heading to Fort Bragg, 500 miles from new york city. It wasn’t home, but it was closer and allowed lomenzo to earn his wings. By 1955, lomenzo had left the service, following his brother’s footsteps into the new york city police department. during the 1950s, tragedy struck his young family when his son, Keith, developed polio. “We spent a lot of time in hospitals,” lomenzo said. “It was a very stressful time and I needed an outlet and the extra money, so I want back into the service.” Returning to active duty as a special forces Green Beret introduced lomenzo to the exhaustive training and steadfast camaraderie of this elite group of soldiers. “you know you can do anything anyone throws at you,” he said. In 1966, lomenzo again left the service. an old buddy from the military, then head of security at Fontainebleau hotel, invited lomenzo to join him in a temporary gig squiring celebrities around the miami Beach hotel. among the visiting stars was “ol’Blue eyes” himself, Frank sinatra. “mr. sinatra took a liking to me and I ended up staying with him for two years,” lomenzo said. “Wherever he was going, I went.”

after the sinatra job, the army beckoned once more before lomenzo moved to Florida, where he served as police chief in st. petersburg. however, lomenzo couldn’t leave his beloved army for too long, so in the ’70s, he rejoined. By the time he finally retired in 1994, he had also clocked in time with the drug enforcement administration. he picked a place in Brevard because of the county’s strategic location. “my dad was in Ft. lauderdale and my kids were on the West coast of Florida and Brevard was right in the middle,” he Senior life Photo explained. Citizen soldier, retired Lt. Col. Robert Lomenzo and his these days, the citizen soldier enjoys wife, Sally, prepare to paint the town. the views of the Indian River from his downtown melbourne rather from pleasant dinners out at Red condo, a place he shares with wife, Ginger, scott’s on Fifth, or matt’s sally. the excitement these days comes casbah restaurants, coupled with travel not from guarding the rich and famous and family. or performing feats of bravery, but the soldier is finally the citizen. shuttle ends, new mission begins By linda wigginS

ed avery is on a new mission. after putting in 29 years on the space shuttle mission, he’s recruiting laid-off peers into a business of their own from home, putting them back to work and in the process bringing jobs back home from overseas. “I’m going to place a thousand people in their homes by the end of the year, said avery, team leader for open door multiservices, llc. the micro-businesses are virtual call centers, where workers receive in-bound calls to their home offices for everything from sales to technical assistance. pay ranges from $9 to $31 an hour as independent contractors. avery is focusing on former space workers in the north end of Brevard county. “one of the major positives is that for anyone to make decent money in Brevard, you have to travel down to the south end of the county, avery said. “With this opportunity, you’re not burning gas and time in travel. avery’s firm has contracts with major companies for telecommunications, tax software, worldwide theme parks, emergency auto service and more. needs are simple: a pc, telephone and headset, high-speed internet service, communication skills and good voice quality. “many already have computers in their home. they all are used to problem solving and working with customers. they are on the cutting edge of technology. there is a background check required, and most of them have gone through some sort of background security clearance, so that shouldn’t be a problem, avery said, listing reasons why the opportunity is good for former space workers. the time commitment is a minimum of 20 hours a week, but there is no maximum. Beyond boosting personal incomes and the local economy, consumers will benefit, according to avery. “there is a cultural and often a language disconnect when we have to call companies for help and the calls are routed overseas, avery said. “this concept is a win-win for everyone. For more information, go to spacecoasters.com or call 321-506-4587. displaced space workers can receive free computer equipment through computers for education, a nonprofit agency formed and run by current and former space workers. Instead of sending surplus items to landfills and adding to an already sensitive environment, carnival and Royal caribbean cruise lines help local and international families rebuild their lives. cruise lines have made huge leaps in the past decade to become even greener in all their practices. sustainability is incorporated into everything and green business practices are apparent through onboard recycling efforts and customer service practices. the mustard seed of central Florida, a green nonprofit recycler funding furniture distribution to families, has recycled mattresses from port canaveral-based ships. “While Royal caribbean is the only cruise line to partner with the mustard seed, the Walt disney World corporation regularly donates mattresses, furniture and household items that would otherwise end up in a landfill, to our organization when doing hotel renovations,â€? said lauren conway, communications coordinator for the mustard seed of central Florida. “the mission of the mustard seed Furniture and clothing Bank is to

Fraternal organizations offer fellowship, philanthropy By george white

Fraternal organizations in Brevard county offer a chance for fellowship but also represent important support to worthy causes and organizations. cocoa moose lodge 1717, open since 1953, is expanding services for its 480 members, according to administrator mike Witcher. Founded in 1888, the loyal order of moose now has one million members in 2,400 lodges. It supports the operation of mooseheart child city and school and moosehaven, a retirement community for its members in Jacksonville. “We were up to 800 members at one time but the bad economy has hit us,’’ Witcher said. annual dues are $50 for men, $30 for women. “While the lodge is for members only, there are now public bingo games and meals,” he said. membership requires sponsorship by a current member and a background check. “We want them to sponsor somebody we would invite into our house,’’ Witcher said. moose lodge 1717 is located at 221 clearlake Rd., cocoa. From books to weather, smart phones can help By Mary brotherton It’s uncommon to find an adult who does not use a cell phone and the number of smart phones sold to those over 50 grows daily. like a cell phone, smart phones are handy for making telephone calls on the go with the added convenience of maps, browsers, cameras, games and literally thousands of other applications—apps—to make the handheld device almost indispensible. advertisements usually accompany free apps but the charge for ad-free programs is often minimal. With so many apps, how to choose which ones are the best? It all depends on how you intend to use your phone. Will you rely heavily on the device’s built in camera? you may want to download photoshop.com mobile or vignette. do you want to take your social network with you when you travel? download Facebook, tweetdeck, Foursquare or other sites and take your friends wherever you go. do you plan to read? check out nook, aldiko or Google Books for your specific devise. With scanlife Barcode and QR code reader, you can check the prices and information stored in the lines and squiggles that are gaining popularity. you’ve probably heard of the phenomenal game angry Birds, but did you know that with the right app, your phone will also allow you to play games such as sims, Fragger and pac-chomp? Just for fun, check out Google sky or one of the many flashlight apps. you can find an app to record your shopping list based on what is already in your pantry or by reading bar codes and calendars that recognize your voice. apps provide users with quotes from Buddha to shakespeare, from time management to relationship advice. For just about anything you can think of, there’s an app for that! For more information, check your phone or visit androidapps.com for news about what’s hot in the app market. SL

christine (chrissy) deWitte is a wife and mother of two grown children, with two grandchildren. she has served in the us air Force, been a financial counselor and a civil servant for the military. currently, she is a bookkeeper for contractors. deWitte has used her life’s lessons to teach others at her weekly Bible study at the First Baptist church south Brevard. she likes to write poetry and chose a poem she wrote when she was 9 for the title of her book. using humor and down-to-earth dialog, deWitte takes us on her inspiring spiritual journey. this book is an 89-day devotional. each day is devoted to a situation that will be familiar to most of us. each day has a Bible scripture related to the topic, concluding with space for the reader to write his thoughts and devotional. the point to deWitte’s book is we need to accept christ as our lord and savior and follow the Bible in our daily lives. We must accept ourselves as we are and ask the lord’s guidance on a daily basis in our personal life journey. she says, “I pray that my shared thoughts and a glance into my walk with the lord will encourage you. all of that is heavy stuff, dealt with humorously. For example, the 41st day in the devotional reads, “hello, Jesus? I am in trouble. do you have time to talk? I have a direct line and a good connection! he says to call upon him when in trouble and he will deliver thee. the ‘thee’ is me. personal opinion: light book about a heavy subject. Good for the new and seasoned christian. SL

Are you new to Medicare? In 1965 you were probably more tuned in to groovy threads and high school graduation than the new law Congress passed to create Medicare. Could you even imagine the day Medicare would be an important part of your life? If you’re newly eligible for this valuable benefit, we have a special opportunity you may not know about—our Medicare Advantage health plans. These plans include all of the Medicare Part A and B benefits, and also a lot of extras, like a fitness membership, worldwide urgent and emergency care, and more! We also have plans that include Part D prescription drug coverage. What is Part A, B, and D, and how are they different from your employer-based health plan? Join us for an informational meeting and we’ll explain how our plans work, when you can enroll, and answer all of your questions. Like most things, this opportunity is only available for a short time—call Health First Health Plans today and learn more!

Reserve your seat at a Medicare Advantage seminar today! Join us for a full presentation of our health plan features and benefits at a convenient location near you: Titusville—Fest Haus 2855 S.
