Mirth inducted into Air Force’s Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame

BY MARIA SONNENBERG During his working career, retired U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Joseph “Don” Mirth could never talk about work at the dinner table, or anywhere else for that matter.

The Suntree resident, who in August was inducted into the Air Force’s Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, was responsible for the military satellites that have kept this country safe for decades.

When Mirth traveled for work, he could not discuss his destination, for fear the Soviets could track him. It wasn’t until 2011 that the government finally declassified some of his projects, although even now Mirth still is not allowed to talk about some facets of his work.

Mirth dedicated his award to those anonymous people who toiled for decades in the black world where they never received any acknowledgement or recognition for their efforts. Many of them went to their graves and their families never knew what they really did and the enormous impact that they had on the security of this country.

anxious to finally talk about some of the exciting things we did when we were 29 and 30 years old,’ ” Mirth said.

The other 2018 honorees were retired Col. Robert W. “Rob” Roy, Dr. Gladys B. West and William N. Barker.

Raised in Chicago, he enlisted into the Air Force’s Aviation Cadets in 1952 because he was about to be drafted into the infantry.

“That began an exciting 50year odyssey,” Mirth said.

Only six out of his class of 91 made it through the test, and Mirth was one of only three out of those six who made it through pilot training.

He was tapped for the first Air Force satellite program even before graduating from Oklahoma State University, where he earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1959.

Vandenberg Air Force Base in California became headquarters from where he worked as project officer for the launch of satellites used for photo reconnaissance, early warning systems and a nuclear reactor.

Mirth also served as project chief and launch director for several classified space programs and a nuclear reactor. He then became chief of satellite control section engineering for the Air Force’s highest resolution spy satellite program.

After service in Vietnam in 1970, he served as spokesman

for the F-15 Fighter program in Washington D.C. His last assignment took him to Los Angeles, where he served as the Air Force Space Shuttle Program director, responsible for numerous shuttle-related facilities.

“We worked with NASA and built a launch base at Vandenberg, but the Air Force decided to get out of the business after the Challenger disaster,” Mirth said.

Retirement from active duty in 1982 led to a second career with United Technologies Corporation, where he initially managed the Joint Stars radar program for UTC’s Norden Systems Division. He later became UTC’s Space Flight Systems Division vice president, developing the Cargo Shuttle concept. He also was Pratt & Whitney’s USBI senior vice president for advanced engineering and technology.

At Kennedy Space Center, Mirth led the fourth-largest contracting activity, USBI Company, with duties that involved pre-launch processing as well as the refurbishment of the space shuttle’s solid rocket booster elements.

“Five U.S. presidents have credited the satellites with being instrumental in preventing World War III,” Mirth said.

After moving to Brevard County, Mirth was a Junior Achievement volunteer teacher for 26 years. It was one of his most gratifying experiences during that time period.VV

New Year brings hope for better recycling throughout Brevard Recycling can be confusing. It is normal to find people puzzled as to what goes in the recycle bin at home.

Does any plastic container with a chasing arrows symbol imprinted go in the bin? What about

That might not come as a surprise. I know it did to many when Recycle Brevard posted on Facebook a list of what cannot be recycled.

That table, available on RecycleBrevard.org, lists common items that are found in recycle bins, but

the metal base of an unwanted lamp? It is metal.

Paper cups are made of paper, so that goes in the recycle bin, right?

Well, those are some questions commonly asked.

actually don’t belong. That applies to Brevard County and might vary slightly from location to location.

Why don’t they belong?

Why doesn’t the hauler take everything?

The business of recycling, like any other business, depends on the market. If there are buyers for certain materials, those materials can be collected and sold to be recycled into other products. Buyers will look for the best product for the money and sellers will look for the best prices for the product they sell — recyclables.

For buyers, “best product” means low rate of contamination in recyclables bought.

Contamination happens when either the wrong material is part of a load or the right material in the load is compromised (e.g. food residues in containers). To avoid that, sellers must collect the right products and weed out the wrong as best as they can.

If too much of the wrong product comes into the separation facility, called Material Recovery Facility (MRF), the whole load might end up in the landfill.

Contamination is a big issue. In an article in Florida Today, Waste Management reported removing 3,144 tons of garbage — or 40 percent — from the total load processed in May 2018.

That represented a cost of $75,000 for disposal and $24,000 for transporting it all to the landfill.

For sellers, the problem is that “the recycling business stinks these days with the price of commodities such as plastics, metal and paper all in the dumps,” CNBC reported in its 2016 article “Why recycling business is feeling so discarded these days.”

This year, “as part of a broad anti-pollution campaign, China announced that it no longer wants to import foreign garbage and has banned imports of various types of plastic and paper, and tightened standards for materials it does accept,” according to The New York Times.

The market for recyclers worldwide has been affected and “American scrap exports to China fell by about 35 percent in the first two months,” according to The New York Times.

With an average contamination rate of 28 percent and a goal to lower that to less than 10 percent, Waste Management community affairs manager Amy Boyson recommends that residents recycle the basics.

“Recycle plastic bottles, jugs and tubs,’’ Boyson said.

“Aluminum, steel and tin cans. Dry cardboard and dry paper.”

To recycle more in the new year, we need to recycle better. Let’s do this, Brevard!

New classifications challenge Viera, Holy Trinity

The Viera Hawks haven’t announced their schedule for the 2019 season yet, but this much we already know: There will be some new faces and games at new places in the coming year.

The Holy Trinity Tigers, meanwhile, will have some new competition of their own when it comes to competing for a spot in the postseason.

Under the new FHSAA football classification and district alignment announced last month,

the Hawks will compete in Class 7A, District 5 against Melbourne, Harmony, St. Cloud and Tohopekaliga for at least the next two seasons.

Since there is no district play in Class 3A, the Tigers will still have freedom in who they schedule. However, there will now be 10 teams in Region 2 instead of the eight that competed last season.

Joining the Tigers will be Melbourne Central Catholic, Lakeland Christian, Father Lopez, First Academy, Cornerstone Charter, Trinity Prep, Pierson Taylor, Discovery and Frostproof.

Overall, the new classifications created sweeping changes throughout the state as three reigning state champions have moved to new classes.

Miami Northwestern, a back-to-back state champ in 6A, is now in 5A (the same class as Rockledge). Cardinal Gibbons has moved from 5A to 4A, where it will be part of a loaded class that includes Miami Carol City, Miami Booker T. Washington, Glades Central and, of course, Cocoa.

Jacksonville Raines, which beat Cocoa for the state title the past two seasons, will move from Class 4A up to 5A. While Viera will certainly be concentrating on trying to win a sixth consecutive district title in 2019, the new classification also could pose some interesting postseason scenarios.

Plant, which beat Viera in the regional playoffs three consecutive years, is moving to Class 8A. Columbia, always one of the top teams in the class, is dropping to 6A. Coming into Class 7A

That could lead to some interesting playoff matchups down the line, but remember state champion Lakeland is in Region 2 as well. Overall, Viera coach Derek Smith seemed happy with the new district.

“It’s always exciting to play new teams so the new district makes it a little different, exciting,” Smith wrote in an email. “As for adding Armwood to the region, it’s no different than having Plant. They’re

traditionally a great football program, just like Plant.

“Bottom line is you have to beat the best to be a state champion anyways. And the team to beat in our region is going to be Lakeland.”

Holy Trinity coach Nate Hooks Jr. also was happy with his regional setup after the Tigers made school history by winning their first playoff game last season.

“I have no problem with the reclassification, especially since there’s nothing we can do about it,” Hooks wrote. “I’m excited for next season, we’re going to make a pretty good run.

Viera teams have legitimate shot to make deep postseason runs

BY CARL KOTALA If their early-season results are any indication, the next two months could be very promising for the Viera High School boys and girls soccer teams.

After losing five consecutive games — including last year’s district final — to Melbourne, the Viera boys beat the Bulldogs 2-0 in their season opener and can claim the No. 1 seed in the district tournament if

they can beat Sebastian River on Jan. 14.

Viera’s girls, meanwhile, were ranked No. 20 in the state and No. 43 in the nation at press time after defeating defending Class 3A state champion Merritt Island 2-1 and tying defending Class 2A champ Bolles 0-0.

At the time of the game, Bolles was ranked No. 7 in the state and No. 10 in the nation.

The Viera High School boys soccer team considers its back line to be one of the strengths of the team, and Robbie Murtha is a big reason why.

Hawks have a nice mix of veterans that also includes Taylor Collins, Abigail Rolling, Kylie Pulliam and Mya Norton.

But there also is a strong group of younger players — including three sophomores and two freshmen — that have cracked the starting lineup.

Viera’s talent, energized by that early-season success, has the Hawks believing they have a legitimate shot at the state title despite playing so many underclassmen.

“The younger players … yeah, they’re younger, but they’re good,” Rosario said.

“What you need is drive and motivation and they want it

just as bad as (the seniors) do.

I think we have a really good shot this year. They prove themselves every day.”

Viera’s boys, meanwhile, are led offensively by Mads Jensen and Kia Mohajeri. But the Hawks’ main strength is in the back where goalkeeper James Leonard and defenders Robbie Murtha, Tibor Susanj and Stephen McHale can make life difficult for opposing teams.

“The last two or three years, we’ve always built everything based on our defensive unit,” Viera boys coach Nick Robinson said.

“And we’ve got a very good defensive unit.”

The Hawks were dealing with some injury issues in November, particularly the loss of midfielder and team leader Nathan Brooker. If Viera can get healthy by the time the playoffs begin at the end of this month, the Hawks can be dangerous. Beating Melbourne was a big confidence booster.

“It was great,” Murtha said.

“Especially for me, playing here and having not ever beat them (before). It was great to finally come home and beat them like that in our first game.”VV

While the girls have been adapting to the style of new coach — and Viera alumna — Maggie Davis, the boys have been trying to find a new identity following the departure of five key players.

The boys got off to a rough start, dropping their first two games as the team struggled defensively while also trying to figure out who their go-to player will be following the graduation of all-time leading scorer Trey Schaneville.

The Hawks also have a couple of impactful newcomers in DJ Pearson and Jarvelle Francis.

Viera, which bounced back from those two early losses to win three in a row, will face an uphill battle in the district with Melbourne the clear favorite. Coach Brett Fink is confident his team will get better by the time district play kicks into gear this month.

“January for us is kind of like January in the college basketball season,” Fink said.

“All of the preseason stuff is one thing. All the nonconference stuff is one thing.

That conference season in college and our district season is high school, that’s two different animals.

“I think by the time we get there, and we’ve had a little more time to mold these guys, a little more time to find out who we are, we’ll give Melbourne everything they want — and everyone else in the district, for that matter.”

“We’re trying to get our fundamentals down,” Davis said. “I’ve got a lot of young kids whose fundamentals lack, so I’m trying to set those as strong as I can initially. Once I can get those fundamentals done, we can start to work on the actual things that matter, like getting some points on the board.

“It’s hard to get the shots rolling if we can’t manage to get the basis of an offense initially. We’re working on that and slowly but surely, we’re trickling our way toward (becoming) a good ball team.”VV

BY CARL KOTALA The bar has been set rather high for both the Holy Trinity boys and girls soccer teams this season.

But they wouldn’t put it there if they didn’t think they had the talent.

“We’re pretty confident this year,” said senior Jessica Baez as the girls eye another district title — and more.

Having graduated only two players from last year’s title team, the Tigers already had plenty of reason to feel self-confident. But throw in the return of Lauren Gayles and Kailey Dunn from injury and the addition of talented newcomer Aislin Scully, and it’s easy to see why Holy Trinity is thinking of going beyond last season’s trip to the regional semifinals.

“It’s not a secret that we have high expectations for how far we’re going to go in the postseason this year,” girls coach Joey Messina said.

“I think everyone’s pretty determined to definitely be competitive postseason.

We’re looking to be regional champions. That’s kind of where our sights are set right now.”

Ryder Cup highlights winter play in men's golf

The golfing season is in full swing, and the Viera East Men's Golf Association is averaging more than 60 golfers every week competing in the various game formats selected

by Tony Hines, the Viera East tournament director.

One of the most popular VEMA tournaments held each year is the Ryder Cup, where team captains and the Viera East Golf Club pros pick the teams where one team is the Red team and the other is the Blue team. It follows the Ryder Cup format to a point.

The Ryder Cup selection was a big event held at Divots.

The first-round results were counted for each of the 32 teams in a two-man scramble format with points awarded for each of the 18 holes.

At the end of the first round, the Blue team led 150-138.

BY JULIE STURGEON C-SPAN’s tour bus recently visited Viera High School on its annual cross-country journey, giving students a first-hand perspective about how the network operates.

C-SPAN, or Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network, is a not-for-profit company whose mission is to make government more

transparent to Americans.

On Nov. 28, students from select Viera classes had the opportunity to get behind the scenes on the C-SPAN bus and gain an understanding of how it differs from other news networks. “We do not show you the highlights, we show everything so we’re a little different, not better or worse,� said C-SPAN

Green said. “So, if you want to watch 20 hours of television, we will be showing it.�

During a question and answer period, one student asked Green about the location of C-SPAN cameras. “In the Senate chamber, there is one camera,� said Green, “and that is controlled by the majority party. That is not our camera.�

The majority party can shut off the camera at any time, which sometimes aggravates C-SPAN viewers.

Outside the Senate chamber, in the hallways, C-SPAN has several cameras pointing at strategic angles. A wideangle camera is used to show as much as possible. “That is so we are not interpreting or narrating,�

Green said.

Future journalists or other students who are interested in making their own video documentaries can enter the annual StudentCam competition. The winning videos are aired on C-SPAN, and the first-place prize is $5,000.

This year’s question is: What does it mean to be an American?

Students are encouraged to use a little C-SPAN footage and reach out to elected officials while creating their documentaries. “We had a middle schooler from New Jersey who did a Skype interview with a senator,� Green said.

Jeff Draves, an AP Capstone and Social Studies teacher at Viera arranged the C-SPAN visit. “I just think when the opportunity arose it was one of those things we needed to do,� Draves said.

Draves said his students are starting to get involved more politically. “This generation kind of reminds me a little bit of the ’60s, Draves said. “They are starting to get involved. They’re no longer just observing, so this type of thing, especially with primary sources, is always good.�

Members of the Suntree Elementary Kindness Club are excited about what they do for the community.

Kindness Club at Suntree Elementary creates smiles for everyone

BY CHRIS BONNANO A group of students at Suntree Elementary School have made it their goal to make others happy thanks to the organization of an uplifting new organization called the Kindness Club at the school.

“I started it last year, (it) was just an idea I had to increase kids’ awareness about creating a kindness culture at our school,’’ said Tracy Seibert, who works as an instructional coach at Suntree. “And so, when I sent out the flier to see who was interested, I had about 25 kids I would say. But in actuality, we ended at 35 last year and this year we’re over 50.’’

Students with the club, which Seibert said meets twice a month, have performed random acts of kindness around the school. That includes writing affirmation messages attached to a sticker, pencil or piece of candy that are handed out to students.

They’ve also filled Easter eggs and hidden them in random places around the school to give students fun surprises. Cards have been made for faculty and staff at

the school along with outside entities that include the Brevard Sharing Center.

In addition, club members, who Seibert notes are in grades third through sixth at the school, have helped with a toy drive for those at Nemour’s Children’s Hospital in Orlando. They also recently raised $600 for a relief fund to help victims of Hurricane Michael through various fundraising projects.

Siebert also notes that the club puts a particular emphasis on a word associated with kindness each month. December’s word is “sharing.”

“I love anything to do with Mrs. Siebert, but my very favorite was making posters for the toy drive at our school,’’ said fourth-

grader Addison Dwenger in an email. “It was my favorite because I knew people would know about the toy drive and things.’’

“I loved doing the Random Acts of Kindness hidden in plastic eggs,” added fifthgrader Madison Kirk, also in an e-mail. “It was so fun to watch kids happy to find them.”

The students added they just wanted to give back and make positive differences when asked about why they wanted to be in the club.

“I joined the Kindness Club because I love being kind, helping people and being around other people,”Dwenger said.

“Basically the program was introduced in the 1993-94 season to target students through all school systems to introduce them to live theater and building appreciation for theater arts,” said Karen Wilson, the director of theater for youth and the outreach program at the King Center.

“We select groups that

produce these programs by a lot of regional and touring artists. We book them in, they do their work and we bus the students to see the productions. The goal also is to be student-friendly so they are accessible, taking that into consideration. In

Quest students putting the art into STEAM projects

BY CARL KOTALA Students at Quest Elementary School have been learning this year that art is about more than just drawing a pretty picture.

Art teacher Kelly Parker and STEM teacher Katie Caruso have combined their classes for a new class called STEAM, which teaches students about Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics and how they all go together.

“I think they typically think of art as crafts, galleries, photography and that kind of thing,” Caruso said. “In this way, they see the design component of it.”

Students in grades kindergarten through sixth have been working on projects throughout the year that not only incorporate all the elements of STEAM, but also teach them valuable lessons about collaboration and communication.

In second grade, students did a project on bat habitats.

“We discussed different species and their habitats and then we looked specifically at bats,” Parker said. “They were able to create their own individual

bats, and then as a team they worked to create a habitat that fit certain criteria that was given.”

Third graders discussed endangered animals and looked at honeybees.

Students worked in teams to build a honeycomb and created a clay bee while also learning about polygons and different shapes.

The fourth-grade project centered on beach erosion.

Students studied and drew art about different types of weather and then drew or designed a barrier.

“That’s a good example of where we have the engineering process, and then we follow it up with an individual art project where they will create a clay sea-life creature,” Parker said.

By working together in groups, the teachers are trying to give their students the kind of collaborative skills that can be used throughout their life. Part of that means making sure everybody gets to take on a leadership role so that all students have a voice and there isn’t just one person dominating the group or sitting back and letting everyone else do the work.

“I think we’ve done a really good job of designing it where they have roles within their group and they rotate those roles,” Parker said.

“Really, they kind of run the show.

Metro Diner has opened its 64th location in the United States at 7954 North Wickham Road, Suite 101, in Suntree at the Shoppes at Baytree. It is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

John Davoli, the restaurant’s founder, opened the original Metro Diner at 3302 Hendricks Avenue in Jacksonville in 1992.

“What sets us apart from other restaurants is that we are a local diner,’’ Davoli said. “Although we are a corporation, we are one diner at a time. Our concept is to be where the locals eat. We make sure that we are staffed properly. We make sure we have enough servers, cooks, hosts and washers.’’

In 2011, Davoli opened

a second location in Jacksonville about 13 miles from the original restaurant.

Since then, Metro Diner has been an American success story.

“Before we opened the second location, we were featured on Food Network’s ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,’’’ Davoli said. “It was such an amazing experience. It was a nice kickoff to our second location.’’

The eighth location, a Metro Diner in Gainesville, became the most profitable.

That established the foundation for a flurry of restaurants around the country.

Restaurants in Nevada and Arizona are the westernmost. A 65th restaurant is scheduled to open soon in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“Our plans are to open 20 to 25 a year,’’ Davoli said.

BY CHRIS BONANNO An award-winning Suntree Elementary School teacher has successfully had his first book published.

Jim Taylor, who was named Teacher of the Year for the 2016-2017 school year at Suntree Elementary School, recently had the book he wrote entitled “When I Was a Boy” published by Meadow Row Publishing.

The genesis of the idea to produce the book, illustrated by Chrissy Schram, originated a long time ago, according to Taylor.

“About nine years ago when my daughter (who was around 7 years old at the time) was much younger, I wrote this as a poem to my mom for Mother’s Day,” Taylor said. “I had the art teacher at my previous school illustrate the border.

I framed it and sent it to my mom as a gift. Prior to doing that, I had one of the other teachers proofread it and she said ‘you know, this could be a children’s book’ so all this time, many years later, now it is.”

But it was actually a connection made through his teaching at Suntree Elementary School that

Taylor said helped bring the story from idea to reality.

Violet Favero of Meadow Road Publishing, which published the book, is the grandmother of one of his former students. Last spring, he let her read a draft and, from there, as Taylor said “she helped get me there.”

Area firefighters help Bimini after fire destroys mail boat

BY CHRIS BONANNO Firefighters from across Central Florida paired incredible generosity with a bit of luck to help residents of an island in the Bahamas in need.

Benevolent partnered with firefighters from nearby counties to donate a fire engine full of needed supplies to the island of Bimini, which has a population of a little less than 2,000 people as of the 2010 U.S. Census.

The impetus for the drive

arose, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue District Chief Tom Neidert, after a fire disabled the island’s mail boat and there was not ample equipment on the island to combat the blaze.

“They had no way to get the mail,” Neidert said.

“It’s 18 years old, but it’s got low miles and it’s been kept up real nice,” Tom Neidert said.

From there, a host of fire departments responded to requests to put the necessary supplies on the engine, which was officially presented in a ceremony on Nov. 16.

“They were very grateful for our help,” Tom Neidert said.

But the story gets even more incredible. Just three days after the ceremony on Nov. 19, and just one day after firefighters that had donated the engine and supplies left the island, the engine and equipment were immediately put to life-saving use: “They had a fire and they saved a mom and little girl in

Bimini,” Tim Neidert said.

The donation already might have saved lives, but the work of fire rescue personnel in saving even more and bettering the lives of those on the island will continue, according to Tim Neidert.

“We’re going to try to put together a program for volunteer medics,” said Tim Neidert, who added that that island has just one doctor and two nurses that work normal business hours.

And those efforts would come on the heels of training that was recently completed, according to Tom Neidert.

Approximately 150 locals were taught CPR and first aid. Tim Neidert added that, thanks to a donation, eight automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) were placed throughout the island.

SENIORNews True crime stories stir lifelong passion for award-winninng Viera author

BY MUFFY BERLYN Anna Flowers, a native of Maryland and now a resident of Viera, is an award-winning author of six true crime books. In her early career as a journalist, Flowers worked for news bureaus, as well as in radio and television.

While living in Winter Park in the late 1980s and 1990s, she began writing true crime books, It was something that had interested her since her youth.

“Crime and crime solving has always interested me,” she said. “Even when I was a young girl, I would read that type of book.”

Her daughter, a Volusia County judge, was interning in Orlando, monitoring the high-profile case of Gerald Stano, who confessed to killing 41 women in Central Florida.

“I thought, if I’m ever going to write a book, this is it,” Flowers said. “True crime was at its highest interest.”

Aging Matters in Brevard seeks more volunteer drivers

BY WENDY SCHEURING Aging Matters in Brevard has been a strong force in helping Brevard County’s senior population and veterans.

Between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31, 2018, 727 people were served more than 100,000 meals through its Meals on Wheels program. During that time, 174 clients also were transported on more

Brevard seniors: Be vigilant against telephone scams

BY CHRIS BONANNO The 18th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office in Viera is encouraging area residents, and in particular seniors, to be vigilant against telephone scams.

There are a couple of scams in particular that State Attorney Phil Archer noted “just don’t seem to go away.”

One involves a call where a would-be scammer informs the person on the other end of the line that a relative is in some sort of trouble and that they must send money to help them.

It’s called the “grandparents

scam” because it’s generally geared toward seniors.

“Last year, that scam resulted in payments of about $320 million,” Archer said. “That was one of the top scams last year.”

To that end, Archer recommended that seniors screen their phone calls.

“If you can, use an answering machine,” Archer said. “A lot of these scammers, they want to get you on that phone when you first pick up and they start into their pitch.”

Archer stressed the importance of education, noting the difficulty of tracking down suspects and

the money they’ve swindled.

“Local law enforcement, very little that they can do,” Archer said. “If you don’t know the face, the names are not going to be real. Local law enforcement doesn’t have the resources to send detectives and agents up to Canada or to Mexico to try to track down your money. For local law enforcement, it’s not going to happen. They’re not going to be able to investigate it.”

He said the SAO puts out a monthly bulletin online that talks about current scams and provides lists of resources.

The SAO also recommends researching helpful websites to aid against scammers, including annualcreditreport.com, which Archer said can provide an annual report from each of the three nationwide consumer credit

reporting companies.

He also cited myfloridalegal.com, run by the Florida Office of the Attorney General, and bbbscamtracker.com, which provides up-to-date information on scams.
