DJ carries on his father’s hobby, wants to help out

Finding the right background music, from any era, is something that comes easy for J.A.M. Masters DJs, a locally owned company now looking for charities to help out.

Run by Andrew and Tanisha Burke, the company was started in the 1980s in Shippensburg, Pa. by Andrew’s father, Gerald “Jake” Burke, a community housing coordinator who did deejaying work as a hobby from time to time.

Andrew and his brother Michael would regularly assist him on his

gigs, carrying crates of albums and helping with the set-up and takedown of his equipment. Andrew and Tanisha Burke took over the business in 2005.

But, unlike the early days, the type of songs is not limited to the records on hand, Andrew Burke explained.

“Before we were carrying crates of records in, but it’s all digital now.

I have classical music from the early 1900s, to modern, and every genre in between. We can cover four hours and I like to say I can play anything, any time, anywhere,’’ he said.

And, no matter what style, Burke goes through each song and personally edits out any inappropriate lyrics.

The couple is centering its business around weddings, birthday parties, corporate events and family reunions, but they have a higher purpose in mind for the future, according to Tanisha Burke.

“Our goal is to donate at least $5,000 worth of services each year, just to give back and to help people out,” she said.

She explained that the couple has already pitched in on several events through contacts made by joining the Melbourne Regional Chamber of East Central Florida.

“With us being new to the area and not knowing anybody, that’s how I’ve gotten the word out about us,’’ Andrew Burke said.

Seniors bring Italian American Club into the future

At the Columbus Day celebration on Saturday, Oct. 8, the Italian American Club of South Brevard (IAC) will reveal its summer project. The dinner-dance begins at 6 p.m.

Extensive renovations to their decadesold building began as a simple idea and turned into a major project when IAC members decided to remodel the building.

“This was a year in the making,” said Frank Ciccone, IAC president. “The building needed a lot of repairs and we decided we would go a step further and remodel the building so it’s better looking for us to have our events and also to rent the hall out at a pretty reasonable price.”

During the summer, members picked up everything from a hammer to a paint brush and transformed what used to be an aged room with plain walls into a welcoming hall of glossy floors and fresh paint.

“I thought the renovation was a great idea,” said Frank Cona, who was on hand each day taking photos. “I knew what it looked liked before and now it shows new ideas. It looks beautiful.”

Heading the $15,000 project was building manger AJ Cassone. His goal for the venture was to attract not only current and new members into the club, but people of the community who are looking for a respectably-priced rental facility with a little history.

“We’re trying to take the club into the future,” Cassone said. “Besides the events we host, we will rent the building around our schedule and we have to make it

Brevard County Epilepsy Walk returns to Gleason Park on 11/12/11 BY jackie heyliger

Epilepsy/seizure disorder is the nation’s most common neurological disorder that can affect anyone at anytime. Epilepsy affects more people than Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Cystic Fibrosis combined, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke. In Florida, approximately 353,000 people live with epilepsy.

The Epilepsy Association of Central Florida has been serving Brevard, Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties for almost half a century. Each year, the association sponsors a walk with food, fun, prizes, a silent auction and musical entertainment as a an important fundraiser for the agency. Last year, thanks to the community’s efforts, the agency raised about $20,000. All proceeds stay in Brevard County to help residents in need of assistance with their seizure disorders.

columnists The past remembered at historic pioneer settlement

The historic Pioneer Settlement for the Creative Arts is located in the village of Barberville in nearby Volusia County. See a living Florida history museum and cultural education center that focuses on the lifestyles of early settlers and residents of rural Florida.

The site has evolved into an outstanding village of 17 historic structures.

The centerpiece of the campus is the original Central High School of Barberville, a National Register Places site. Other historical buildings and artifacts, that would otherwise have been destroyed, have been relocated to the grounds, including reproductions of 1900-era buildings. The Settlement maintains a growing historical collection of more than 10,000 objects and features two exhibition and educational venues, six annual festivals, daily tours and frequent educational programs and workshops. The fall jamboree is in early November.

The Central High School opened in 1919 and served as a school until 1969. The founders of the Pioneer Settlement reopened the building reopened as a museum and education center in 1976. Several Florida history exhibits are housed in the building, including Old School House Museum, Women’s Work and other timely themes relating to Florida pioneer life.

In 2002, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The settlement is on 30 acres in rural northwest Volusia County, adjacent to

The address for the Pioneer Settlement for the Creative Arts is 1776 Lightfoot Lane, Barberville, Fla and the phone number is 386-749–2959. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a modest admission and group tours are available.

It is fairly easy and fast to get to the Pioneer Settlement from Brevard County. Take I-95 north to exit 265.

Then take Route 40 west, 20 miles to the village of Barberville. The Settlement is located just west of junction US 17 and Route 40.

I suggest packing a lunch and enjoying the meal on the grounds of the settlement. If it is late in the day, I recommend an early dinner at the Blackwater Inn located in Astor just west of Barberville. The inn’s setting overlooks the beautiful St. Johns River.

They have a salad bar, fresh fish, beef and chicken. The Blackwater Inn opens only for dinner at 4:30 p.m. Call for more information at 888-533–3422. SL

Mobility We crawled, learned to walk, then ran, chased, accelerated, and slowed down. Our life cycle of mobility is not complete, but as people get older they become concerned about how they are going to get around.

Physical fitness helps people extend their mobility and enjoy long lives. As body parts wear out and slow down, older folks look for alternatives to getting from place to place.

The automobile has given many the ease of getting from their doorsteps to any location with convenience. From youth to old age, the automobile is the key to mobility. Wheels make the difference.

As we get older, our ability to function behind the wheel of an automobile changes. We have slower reflexes, our vision is not as good, and we often are taking medications that have warnings on the label “Do not operate a vehicle while taking this medication.” Further, operating complications develop from the use of alcohol and other substances.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) provides a Safe Driving for Mature Operators program for its members. The emphasis is on improving performance and the challenges of safe driving. AARP, through its local chapters, provides Driver Safety programs that focus on defensive driving techniques, age-related changes that impact driving, and ways to become better drivers. Some auto insurance companies like

Age 100 Freedom to go to the grocery store, worship services, the Ed doctor, to visit Baranowski friends, to travel and to just take a drive are part of the mobility older people seek to retain. At some point in a long life, a decision must be made to turn in the drivers’ license and count on others for mobility. Fender benders, accidents, getting lost and concerns of family for safety of self and others may force the decision.

Many public and private agencies provide transportation for mobility-deprived seniors.

Check with the County Community Services Council, your church, the senior center and other resources for assistance.

Mobility in the home is facilitated by special scooters and devices to provide comfort and access. Financial support can often be arranged.

You can meet your mobility challenges by looking at the alternatives and consequences throughout your life. Think ahead. Awareness and preparation are valuable decision tools. Life is full of mobility opportunities. It’s your move!

Exhausted Grandma

It seems today’s children are taught Lucy sign language first.

Kline She sure could tell her parents what she wanted in that manner, but I wasn’t used to it. However when it came to walking, I’d have to call it running, especially the days spent at Epcot and the Aquarium.

Boy did she wear me out, especially in the Aquarium. The large tanks she could look through to see sharks, fish, turtles and even ducks swimming on top of the water, had her very excited.

Her favorite word and animals are “ducks” and she’d point out one every time, along with ooooh-ing and aaahing at the sharks that brushed against the glass. There was so much to see that she’d run back and forth from one to another, return to one and almost disappear around a corner as I’d run to keep up with her. What a day it was. When we finally left the Aquarium she was still full of energy. I was exhausted.

The visit was great and I look forward to the next time. I believe her verbalizing all she sees and feels will come out just as rapidly as the little legs carried her around to see so many things on this visit.

My Point of View

Most seniors are grandparents already and some possibly greatgrandparents. Most of my friends from our young married days, 55 years ago, are in that position. Even though I had four children, all are grown adults now, marriage and children didn’t fall into the common pattern. I had given up expecting to be a grandma many years ago.

Thanks to my youngest son, I finally became a grandmother for the first time in February 2010 when I was almost 77 years old. Since they live 3,000 miles away, I didn’t have the chance to build a relationship and watch her grow as many do. However, last November I drove to California to spend holidays with my son and his family, the “baby” then 10 months old. The few weeks I spent with them I enjoyed watching the little one, who is pretty sharp mentally. She wasn’t yet walking or talking so I didn’t feel I was building much of a relationship with her. I didn’t think she’d even remember me after I left, but I was wrong. Her parents have my picture in the house and often point Nana out to her, so that when she’d see me again, perhaps she could relate.

National Public Lands Day celebrated locally

Volunteers from Cocoa to Viera and Suntree gathered at the Riverwalk Nature Center in Rockledge on Sept. 24 in observance of National Public Lands Day — an event that promotes popular enjoyment and volunteer conservation of public lands since 1994.

Nature-minded community members and a group of Girl Scouts gathered at the center off US 1 to perform a variety of service projects, including collecting trash and pulling weeds and grapevines from overgrown areas. “Now more than ever, we need volunteers to help with our land maintenance,� said Brandon Smith, environmental program coordinator for

the center. “I think that when they see the amount of work it takes to maintain these areas and see what they can accomplish, they understand the importance of their assistance.�

As morning turned to afternoon, volunteers were in the muck of the center’s trail and just happy to be neighbors lending a helping hand. “We’re really trying to ingrain in the girls, a sense of community service, while doing something they don’t get to normally do where it can be fun, but also something good for the community,� said Marsha Barton, local girl scout troop leader. “We wanted to get them out, get them in the sun, get them some exercise and have a chance to do something for others.�

“She’s been talking to us all summer about it. We’re the ones too chicken to do it. We were going to have her committed. I

guess next she‘s going to try bull riding,’’ Caputo said.

After a short briefing and the introduction of the jumpers to the partners they would be attached to, the group was given the signal and boarded the plane, sitting in a crowd on the floor of the plane.

Inshore In the Banana and Indian River lagoons watch for the finger mullet schools to move south. This should be a great month to fish provided the weather holds out for the Space Coast. I recommend looking for the mullet pods and fishing all around them for the smorgasbord of species: sea trout, tarpon, snook, jacks, mangrove snapper and redfish.

Offshore The snook should continue to bite in the Atlantic Ocean along the Brevard coast. Keep an eye out for the birds hitting the mullet pods along the beach to let you know where the fish are. Also you may still find tarpon and kingfish in these concentrated areas of bait.

Surf In October, anglers should see better catches of snook as well as flounder and pompano, along the Brevard County beaches and inlets. The top baits to use in the surf are live shrimp and cut clams. Another alternative would be to cast a diamond jig or any silver type of spoon around any moving bait pods.

Freshwater The water levels are back up in the St. Johns River and the surrounding lakes so the bass action has turned on again. Try spinner baits and buzz baits around the grass edges and wait for a strike.

As a reminder, be sure to keep an eye on the tropics because we are in the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season.

Associations are usually very exacting about the appearance of their common areas and owners’ yards. Most associations have rules or language in their documents controlling landscaping. In 2009, the Florida Homeowners Association law was amended so that associations may not prohibit owners from implementing Florida-friendly landscaping. The purpose and result of implementing FloridaFriendly landscaping is preserving Florida’s water resources and to prevent pollution of waterways.

Florida-friendly landscaping promotes using the right plant in the right place. In other words, design your landscaping by using grasses, plants and shrubs that are best suited to your conditions. Some of these environments include soil types, terrain grade, proximity to salt air, drainage, winds and local weather. In addition, types and uses of fertilizers are considered to prevent water pollution.

Since 2009, most commercial fertilizers sold in Florida are nitrogen-free. Nitrogen is the chemical in fertilizers that is the main cause of water pollution.

There are many sources to learn more about Florida-friendly landscaping, including websites, libraries and books that can be purchased at your lawn and garden store. The best local authority I have found is the Brevard County Extension Service. They personally answer questions and offer a variety of classes.

Their website has a calendar of classes at brevard.ifas.ufl.edu. They also offer a publication called The Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Handbook which goes into detail on installing your Floridafriendly landscaping.

If your association is enforcing landscaping rules and regulations, it may be a good idea to consult your association attorney to be sure you are in compliance with Florida-friendly landscaping.

It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney.

Regardless of the motivation, New Horizons attracts a cross section nationwide with a common love of performing with the band established locally in 2003, said president Elaine Bartolino. “We have jazz musicians, college students and retirees but the majority of them are come-back players, some of whom haven’t played in 30 or 40 years,’’ she said.

First time bass drum player Lucia Croom, a cancer survivor, joined to play alongside with her husband Richard Croom, who many years ago played alto saxophone in the famed FAMU marching band. “It just picked up four years ago. I

know I have to beat it on one and three and how to stay with the conductor. I just go by what I feel and I love it,’’ she said.

New Horizons performed Sept. 10 for residents gathered in a pavilion at Windover Farms in Melbourne as they returned from a charity 5K run.

Bartolino, who plays flute, said the band missed a couple of keys during the performance but otherwise did well. “Now I’m hooked on it. My air is not as much as it used to be but I can still play,’’ she said.

The band is directed by Tom Cobble, a former high school band director in Richmond, Va, who earlier had played tuba and bass for the U.S. Navy Band. “It’s fun and fun is the operative word. Most haven’t played since high school. To see the smile on their faces makes it all worth while,’’ he said.

Wickham Park Senior Center hosts fall festival

Wickham Park Senior Center starts a new tradition on Oct. 16. The center will join local vendors and members of the community to create a fun, enlightening and rewarding experience by welcoming autumn with its first fall festival. “One, we want to still let the community be aware that we are here and what we offer,� said Gloria Robinson, the center’s first vice president. “Two, for fundraising, most people don’t realize that we are not a part of Wickham Park and we are not run by Brevard County.

We are self-funding and we pay our own bills and it can get expensive.�

Although there are other fall festivals to attend throughout the county, the senior center is making theirs unique, hoping to attract the mature crowd in the area. “There are so many retired people around here and we want to welcome back all of the snowbirds,� Robinson said. “The Oktoberfest will be happening the same weekend, but that’s typically for the younger crowd, so we thought to have something for the retired crowd.�

The festival will include a light lunch for a nominal price, live classic country music, dancing, and a flea market with possible Christmas gift ideas, according to Robinson.

Additionally, the festival will consist of activity displays that the center hosts; such as doll making, oil painting, travel and fitness.

“Some people think they’re too old to do things and we need to show them it doesn’t matter,� said Pat Costello, a director at the center. “They’ll realize the exercise classes that we have here is something they can do. Anyone who comes will learn something, but also have fun.�

The festival will be indoors and outdoors, Sun. Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the senior center, 2785 Leisure Way, Melbourne. For more information, call 321-255-4496.

If the United Way of Brevard is the checkbook for community services, the Community Foundation for Brevard (CFB) is the savings account. That savings account generated $147,018 to 36 organizations in its recent annual awards process, and will provide another $215,710 later this year to causes chosen by individual donors.

“We are delighted to have been chosen along with some very worthy groups,” said Marta Fiol of the Cancer Care Center Foundation. “This

will allow us to better fulfill our mission of providing services regardless whether the person who has cancer is insured, or whether their family can pay for all the other expenses that come along with life-saving treatment.”

The Foundation received 78 applications for funding from local not-forprofits – the highest number ever received in one cycle.

No longer will the AEP include the end-of-the-year holidays. The new dates also add seven days to make changes to your Medicare health and prescription drug plans.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has also announced that the average premium for a prescription drug plan has stayed about the same for 2012 when compared to 2011 premiums. This is great news! However, it does not mean you should skip reviewing all of your options to determine if there is another plan that will better fit your health needs as well as cover all your prescriptions.

Doing a cost-benefit check is especially important this year for those interested in Medicare Advantage plans, because you are no longer offered an open enrollment to switch between different Medicare Advantage plans. Instead, a Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period is available Jan. 1 through Feb. 14 annually. The disenrollment period allows you the option of disenrolling from a Medicare Advantage plan and going back to original Medicare (some drug coverage options are also available).

The volunteer counselors with the SHINE program can help you to review options with information about important changes in mind. For instance, the Medicare Advantage mandatory maximum outof-pocket (MOOP) limit for 2012 is $6,700. This will help protect Medicare beneficiaries from high costsharing liabilities. These plans can have a voluntary lower MOOP of $3,400 so this is one area to review when deciding which plan is best for your needs.

Annie

Annie is a silky, shiny short haired kitty that was abandoned in the woods. Although she was a bit shy in the beginning from her ordeal, she is quickly forgetting her rough past and is really getting used to the spoiled life in foster care. Annie is curious and will meow when she wants attention. She likes to give you "head butts" and have you kiss her on the top of her head. Feather toys are a favorite. Her new family must have a bit of patience in the beginning, she may be a bit scared in a new place. But she is very sweet and will quickly win you over with her loud purring.

Storyteller sings and paints about swamp life

Marcella “Marci” Underwood of Port St. John has a story to tell.

Actually she has dozens of them, complete with her own illustrations and songs.

Born in the hills of Connecticut, Underwood was one of six children living in a home without electricity until she was age 9.

“My childhood was very much like Little House on the Prarie. My dad made tables and chairs and we would climb the ladder to sleep in a loft. It was fun,’’ she said.

Underwood remembers her French mother teaching her little songs and phrases.

“She taught us everything: how to cook, sew and take care of babies.

We used to make our own clothes out of feedbag materials,’’ she said.

Quitting school to get married at age 16, Underwood moved to New Jersey and later New Orleans and Tampa. She raised two children, Danny, now 52, and Kristina, 34.

“My mother always told us stories and I took after her with a big imagination. When I learned to read I would read books like Heidi and Treasure Island and then I started making up stories and tall tales of my own,’’ she said.

One of her favorites, now the subject of more than 20 illustrated books, is Tilli the Turtle Girl set in the swamps near New Orleans. Tilli accidentally falls off a riverboat and

“The reason I kept writing about Tilli is the kids loved her and kept asking what happened next. I have one book where she goes to Africa,’’ she said.

Underwood continues to write

books and paint illustrations, but she’s yet to give a local presentation.

“I’ve been doing them all my life so it’s hard to stop,’’ she said.

There are many other characters, in a series of books, but the most amazing thing is the way she goes about her craft.

“I don’t even know how to use a computer so I write everything out longhand,’’ she said. SL

Inshore In the Banana and Indian River lagoons watch for the finger mullet schools to move south. This should be a great month to fish provided the weather holds out for the Space Coast. I recommend looking for the mullet pods and fishing all around them for the smorgasbord of species: sea trout, tarpon, snook, jacks, mangrove snapper and redfish.

Offshore The snook should continue to bite in the Atlantic Ocean along the Brevard coast. Keep an eye out for the birds hitting the mullet pods along the beach to let you know where the fish are. Also you may still find tarpon and kingfish in these concentrated areas of bait.

Surf In October, anglers should see better catches of snook as well as flounder and pompano, along the Brevard County beaches and inlets. The top baits to use in the surf are live shrimp and cut clams. Another alternative would be to cast a diamond jig or any silver type of spoon around any moving bait pods.

Freshwater The water levels are back up in the St. Johns River and the surrounding lakes so the bass action has turned on again. Try spinner baits and buzz baits around the grass edges and wait for a strike.

As a reminder, be sure to keep an eye on the tropics because we are in the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season.

When asked about the vast difference between his firefighting/paramedic job and spending his days off working with seniors at Hey Days, Nick Slaughter said, “It’s a lot different from axing down doors. That’s when I’m saving lives. Here, I am preserving lives.”

Hey Days, a Merritt Island senior day program owned and operated by Slaughter’s mother Debbie Wilborn, LPN, and Keith Krodel, RN, is a weekday program providing activities for the mind and body, entertainment, meals and snacks and a home-like atmosphere. Nick Slaughter’s sister Stacy runs Hey Days while Nick assists with everything from maintenance to working with clients creating handmade items.
