Brevard County Public School teachers see Viera as retirement paradise BY WENDY SCHEURING Patti and Richard Rutenberg feel like they are living the retirement dream at the Bridgewater at Viera 55+ Community. “My wife and I pinch ourselves,” Richard Rutenberg said. “We can’t believe we have a place like this.” From watching the wildlife that wanders onto their property to enjoying the serenity of their backyard pond, the Rutenbergs have arrived. “It’s very peaceful,” Richard Rutenberg said. “When the wind is blowing, it looks like the land is sailing. The landscaping is amazing, right down to where they are going to plant the palm trees.” Both Patti and Richard are teachers. In 1995, Patti started teaching the second grade at Lewis Carroll Elementary School before transferring to MILA Elementary, which she attended as a young girl. Richard has been teaching math at Central Middle School in West Melbourne since 2005. Richard views teaching as a hobby, but envisions retirement in the near future. Patti retired in 2016 due to health reasons, after having undergone treatments for ovarian cancer a decade earlier. She taught for Brevard Public Schools for 30 years. “A lot of women like me

manage to survive cancer,” Patti said. “What they don’t tell you is the damage that’s done to your body in order to survive. Two years ago, I found out I had Barrett’s esophagus. For women, it’s aggressive. That’s when we decided I could not work anymore. I did not feel like I could work as a teacher, taking the medication I needed to take. I was in pain without the medication.” Her doctors told her she needed to make a lifestyle change. They considered moving out of the county but decided on settling in Viera.

“We love it here. It's not just for the young. It's a great place to retire. It has everything we really want.”

A rubberized track will be part of the improvements to Viera High School’s track facilities at Hawk Stadium. Construction should be completed by early September.

State-of-the-art track should be ready by early September BY MIKE GAFFEY Viera High School’s track facilities at Hawk Stadium are being upgraded and should be completed by the time of the Hawks’ first home football game. Crews currently are replacing the old eightlane asphalt track with a rubberized track surface that potentially can reduce runners’ injuries and improve their speeds. Workers also have added a second sandpit and take-off boards for long jump and triple jump competitions and poured new concrete for the long jump, triple jump and pole vault runways and high jump pad. “Once the kids heard the news about the surface getting updated to a rubber track they were excited for

the change,” VHS track coach Kerron Greaves said. “And what does that mean? No more asphalt. They don’t have to come in to practice day in and day out and deal with that surface. The coaches are looking forward to the change because that means we’re building off of last year and this is just another way to add some energy into the program.” VHS is one of several Brevard County high schools getting upgraded tracks, said Greaves, who is entering his fourth year coaching VHS track. Melbourne High School and Cocoa High had their aging asphalt tracks replaced in the past few months, he said. Composed of synthetic rubber particles bound with latex or polyurethane, the

all-weather surface is more forgiving on runners’ joints and muscles than asphalt, reducing their chances of suffering stress fractures, shin splints or other repetitive-use injuries. The spongy surface also can act as a springboard, increasing runners’ speeds and improving their performances. Greaves said the upgrade means his team will be able to practice in spikes on their home turf instead of having to travel to Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy to run on that school’s rubberized track. “It will be huge for us to get the kids prepared for competition,” he said. With Brevard Public Schools footing the bill for milling, re-grading and installing the rubberized

track atop new asphalt will be done with revenue from a half cent sales surtax that voters approved in 2020. A nonprofit organization that had been raising money for the VHS track for several years will instead use its funds to pay for the remaining track-andfield-related upgrades. Power of Pizza Charities, run by Mike Acosta, owneroperator of Mr. Delicious Pizza at 1950 Viera Blvd., Suite 101, and co-chairperson Brittany Streufert, has collected about $130,000 for Viera High School’s athletic programs

since 2011 through its annual Eat My Crust 5K run and by selling engraved bricks. The Back the Track engraved brick project is scheduled to be installed this summer at the stadium, Streufert said. The next Eat My Crust 5K will be May 7, 2023, and the charity hopes to raise money for a pole vault and high jump system, a discus cage and a new weight room at VHS, she said. The upgrades should enable Viera High School to host districtwide, regional and off-season track meets, Streufert said. “I'm hoping they’ll be ahead of schedule so that everything can be looking really good by the time school is back in session,” she said. Senior cyclists ride for fun, the benefits of health, camaraderie BY CURTIS HANZEL They call themselves Tour de Farce — a group of retirees who do some serious biking and break along the way to shoot the breeze. While many local residents enjoy a regular bike ride, this group of area cyclists is out to show that cycling is not just a sport for the young. Indian River Colony Club, a gated golf community in Viera, is the starting point for the group of seniors who cycle three mornings a week. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings you are likely to encounter the group making the 19-mile trek to Cocoa Village. They call themselves the Tour de Farce. The group started in 2013 as the Brevard Social Ride, an open Saturday ride on Rockledge Drive. As more residents of Indian River Colony Club joined, the group evolved. Currently there are nine riders ranging in age from 61 to 85. Pat Giancatarino moved here from Madison, Alabama. He biked a lot when he was in his 30s, but his exercise interests changed over time. “When COVID kicked up, I knew I had to do something because all of the gyms were

closed,” Giancatarino said. “So I started biking again. That was February 2020. I got involved with this group later that summer. It’s a great way to keep active and a

great way to burn calories.” Giancatarino has lost more than 50 pounds since he started riding again. Exercise and weight loss aren’t the only benefits of riding with the group. One group member, Bob LaBonte, started riding with the group in 2017 on an old used bike he referred to as Old Huffy. “I hadn’t been on a bicycle since I was a kid,” LaBonte said. “When I retired, I went

from a moderate exercise level to the sedentary game of golf. That’s the reason I started to ride.” In the five years he has ridden with the group, LaBonte has found an added perk. “The guys I ride with are a great bunch of guys,” LeBonte said. “We have a spot in Cocoa Village that we refer to as The Nook. That’s where we sit and talk about current issues.

We’ll sit for half an hour or 45 minutes and solve all the world’s problems. Then, we get back on the bike and pedal home.” So for those looking for a little more exercise or just to hang out with a great bunch of guys, the Tour de Farce might be calling you. They meet in Indian River Colony Club on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings between 7:30 and 8 a.m. VV

Back in a professional league for the first time since 2019, the Viera-based USSSA Pride fastpitch softball team kicked off its exhibition-style summer schedule June 14, falling 9-5 to the Smash It Sports Vipers in Shawnee, Kansas. The Pride and Rochester, New York.-based Vipers make up the Women’s Professional Fastpitch league, which played its inaugural opening day game at Shawnee Mission School District Complex. The two teams are scheduled to play each other and other softball squads through Aug. 6 at various stops throughout the Southeast and Midwest. Each series is scheduled at the time of an existing youth tournament. WPF Commissioner Lauren Chamberlain, a former All-American softball player for Oklahoma who played for the Pride from 2015 to 2018, tweeted on June 14 that she took a moment on opening day “to recognize how special today was.” “Deeply humbled and extremely thankful. These women already mean so much to me!” she added in her tweet. Founded in 2009, the Pride originally played in the Nashville-based National Pro Fastpitch league. The Pride relocated

to Brevard County in 2017 after the USSSA moved its national headquarters from Kissimmee to Viera and plays its home games at USSSA Space Coast Complex, formerly Space Coast Stadium. The Pride won seven regular-season titles and NPF Cowles Cup championships in 2010, 2013, 2014, 2018 and 2019 before leaving the NPF in 2019 at the end of its 10-year contract. The team played an independent schedule in 2020 and 2021. The NPF folded in 2021 after its 2020 and 2021 seasons were canceled. This year’s Pride team is led by head coach and former Pride player Kelly Kretschman, a Satellite High School star, two-time Olympic medalist, nine-time pro All-Star outfielder and threetime NPF Player of the Year. “It was good to get the team back on the field last weekend for our opening series,” Kretschman said. “We are looking forward to playing at our home stadium in front of our home crowd. This year, we have a good mix of veteran talent and young talent that I believe everyone will enjoy watching. For me personally coming back and coaching the team, who supported my professional career in my hometown, is an honor. We are looking forward to providing fun entertainment for

families and connecting with the community.” The Pride’s 2022 roster of former college players includes Florida State pitcher Danielle Watson and infielder Jessie Warren, Virginia Tech First Team All-America pitcher Keely Rochard and Missouri left fielder Casidy Chaumont. For its first game, the Pride didn’t have to face record-breaking slugger Jocelyn Alo, who took time off after leading Oklahoma to a second straight national title. Alo, who hit a collegiaterecord 122 home runs for the Sooners, was selected with the No. 1 overall pick last month in the inaugural WPF College Draft and started her pro career with the Vipers. The Pride will end its 2022 season with a fourgame homestand against the Florida Vibe on Aug. 1 and Aug. 3, S&S Sports on Aug. 5 and the Vipers on Aug. 6. The Florida Vibe game starts at 5 p.m. and the other games start at 7:30 p.m. Fans can livestream games at usssalive. com. For more information about the Pride, visit usssapride.com. VV

Holy Trinity’s Latson hoping to carry on recent success by Tigers BY CARL KOTALA If the Holy Trinity Tigers are going to accomplish anything this upcoming football season, they’re going to need a big year from sophomore quarterback Jay Latson. And if there were an award for the most improved player since the start of spring football, it would probably be … Jay Latson. The sophomore quarterback showed just how far he’s come since April during a recent 7 on 7 tournament at Merritt Island

High School, where the Holy Trinity sophomore showed improved mechanics, a better throwing motion and pretty solid accuracy. “I’ve been working with people to help me with that,” Latson said. The sophomore will not only be taking on a bigger role in his first season as Holy Trinity’s starter, he’ll also be stepping into some rather large shoes. Holy Trinity’s last four quarterbacks only started for one season, but all four — Dru Nickson, JaLon Hudgins, Davin Wydner

and Ty Englehart — all led the Tigers to the FHSAA regional semifinals. Three of them (Nickson, Hudgins and Englehart) were seniors when they accomplished that feat.

“I’m going to be working on my accuracy, working on my pocket presence.” — Jay Latson

Latson is well aware of what those four accomplished, and he’s planning on taking it at least one step further. Speaking before the turmoil that surrounded the program with the removal of head coach Nate Hooks Jr., Latson said he thought the Tigers had a chance to go further than they have ever been in the postseason. As a freshman last season, Latson played wide receiver where he caught seven passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran six times for 55 yards and two scores. He attempted three passes on the year, completing two of them for 114 yards and a score. In his first outing as Holy Trinity’s starter in the team’s spring game against Satellite in May, he threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Dayday

game. “I could have done better.” Though he was picked off in the team’s 7 on 7 tournament at Merritt Island, he led his team to three victories and was able to fit the ball into some tight windows. “I did pretty good, but I made a couple of mistakes,” he said. Granted there was no pass rush coming at him, but Latson appeared poised and was able to fit the ball into some tight windows during the 7 on 7 tournament as his game continues to mature. At 6-feet, 155 pounds, Latson said he hopes to add another 10 pounds during the summer while continuing to work on his game. “I’m going to be working on my accuracy, working on my pocket presence,” he said. The Tigers might not know what they will look like come the fall, but they now have a better idea of what kind of quarterback they will have running the show Latson wasn’t off base when asked to describe his quarterback style. “Athletic,” he said. “I can do it all.” VV

SCHOOL

BSYO develops youths’ musical talents, encourages personal growth BY NANETTE HEBDIGE Since 1984, the BSYO has been enlisting young talent from all schools in Brevard County and surrounding areas. This year marks the 39th season for the Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra. It exposes young, aspiring musicians to a variety of musical ensemble opportunities, developing solid training that isn’t readily available to further their interest and ability in classical music. More than 125 young musicians, grades 1 through 12 — ages 6 to 18 — come together representing public, private and home schools. “Being a part in BSYO helps me to become a better musician because I surround myself with other talented students that love music like I do. And we love playing together,” Marley Appel said with a smile. Staying true to its original undertaking, the BSYO promotes musical education for the youth in Brevard and adjacent counties. After a competitive audition process, students are selected and placed in string ensemble, Festivo or the Symphony orchestra, depending on their skillset. Mickey Woodrich is thrilled to participate in the BSYO. “I’m one of the many students lucky enough to benefit from the financial assistance. We’re pretty thankful to have this opportunity available and in my case, my family’s budget

Plus, we’re required to follow the conductors and observe other musicians.” Woodrich said in a serious tone. “I can also take these skills back to my school and encourage other young musicians”. Summer string camp was held in June for more than 100 children of all ages for the three BSYO tiers: beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Talented students are then given the opportunity to

play as part of quartets during performances. Woodrich is extremely proud to be a part of the BSYO. “It’s amazing to be able to do justice to composers like Tchaikovsky and Borodin and be around other young musicians that truly love

music and playing. There are high expectations for our performances, so everyone must bring their A game.” BSYO provides musical training to young people, promoting artistic growth and a deeper understanding in music, while creating awareness in the orchestral

music world. Students are encouraged to participate in their own school music programs and continue with private tuition to hone their instrumental skills. Auditions begin in August for the upcoming season, beginning in September 2022. For additional information and schedules, go to bsyo.us, email bsyoinfo@gmail.com or call 321-216-7804. VV

SUMMER NEWS JULY 2022

VIERA/SUNTREE

Do you have an American Woman Quarter in your pocket?

Children enjoy summer camp at Viera Regional Community Center

BY JENNIFER H. MONAGHAN

When you go shopping, look carefully at the coins in your change. You could be fortunate to have received quarters featuring distinguished American women. The U.S. Mint announced in January that beginning this year and continuing through 2025, per The American Women Quarters Program, they will issue commemorative quarters celebrating distinguished American women. “These inspiring coin designs tell the stories of five extraordinary women whose contributions are indelibly etched in American culture,” said United States Mint Acting Director Alison L. Doone. Presented on the 2022 quarters are: Maya Angelou (writer), Dr. Sally Ride (first American woman in space), Wilma Mankiller (first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation), Nina Otero-Warren (first female superintendent of Santa Fe public schools) and Anna May Wong (first Chinese American film star in Hollywood). The obverse of each coin will maintain a likeness of George Washington, facing right. Look for these quarters in your change or shop online. A limited quantity will be produced. For more information, go to usmint.gov. VV

This design depicts Dr. Sally Ride next to a window on the space shuttle. The inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is intentionally positioned over the Earth next to America, indicating that out of all women in the United States, Ride was the first into space.

12

The design depicts Maya Angelou with her arms uplifted. Behind her are a bird in flight and a rising sun, images inspired by her poetry and symbolic of the way she lived.

This coin features a close-up image of Anna May Wong with her head resting on her hand, surrounded by the bright lights of a marquee sign.

How Far Away Is the Moon?

This design depicts Wilma Mankiller with a resolute gaze to the future. The wind is at her back, and she is wrapped in a traditional shawl. To her left is the sevenpointed star of the Cherokee Nation.

Source: NASA

The Short Answer: The Moon is an average of 238,855 miles away from Earth, which is about 30 Earths away. You might be surprised. Often when we see drawings of the Earth and the Moon, they look really close together. Don’t be fooled! They’re actually really far apart. The Moon is an average of 238,855 miles (384,400 km) away. How far away is that? That’s 30 Earths.

The coin features an image of Nina Otero-Warren flanked by three individual Yucca flowers — New Mexico’s state flower. SOURCE: UNITED STATES MINT

Pinspiration offers summer studio and to-go arts and crafts BY WENDY SCHEURING

Pinspiration is a cool place to visit in the Suntree area during the summer months, both literally and metaphorically. Whether your kids are participating in camp or not this summer, or whether it’s a sunny or rainy day, this modern studio is the go-to place to get crafts to-go so you can do them in the comfort of your own home. Parents work on crafts with their children at Pinspiration. These to-go crafts are a great summertime option, especially if you are not sending your child to camp this year. The studio, which officially opened its doors in February 2022, is located at 7777 N. Wickham Road, Suite, 17 in Suntree Square. The to-go arts and crafts option started from necessity during the pandemic. The studio is still offering this convenient service. The Suntree location is open Wednesday through Sunday and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. You can walk in at any time and pick up a craft that you like or you can call on the phone

and request a take-out. “I love the DIY concept,” said owner Barbara Daigle. The Indialantic resident said that all of the furnishings in the studio have been refurbished and that she did the floors herself. She describes herself as a “crafter and a project person.” The studio has more than

50 arts and crafts projects to choose from, some of which can be viewed on its website. The projects come with all of the materials needed as well as self-guided instructions for a set price. Embellishments, such as glitter, glitter foil, sea glass rocks, and beads are also available at no extra charge if you are making your crafts

at the studio. If you opt to take your craft home, just make sure to ask for the embellishments. “Everything comes with a tutorial that people can use as a guide,” Daigle said. If you are having trouble completing the craft, you can always pick up the phone and speak with someone who will walk you through it.

Eventually, the studio will have online videos showing how to make the arts and crafts projects as well as personalized Zoom meetings offering one-on-one guidance from someone at the studio. For information, call 321-775-3119 or visit pinspiration.com\melbourne. VV

Legislature OKs $20.9 million for Brevard high-tech learning centers SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE Eastern Florida State College has received $20.9 million in funding from the Florida Legislature for a pair of major new high-tech centers to train students for area industry. State lawmakers approved $19.7 million for a Center for Innovative Technology Education (CITE) on the Melbourne campus and $1.2 million for an Aerospace Center of Excellence (ACE) on the Titusville Campus. Gov. Ron DeSantis approved the funding in the state budget that he signed

June 2. Together, the facilities will further strengthen the college’s leading role in providing a pipeline of highly skilled employees to aerospace, defense and a range of other high-tech companies along the Space Coast. “This is a significant step forward for our students and community that will provide excellent careers and spur local economic growth,” EFSC President Dr. Jim Richey said. “The timing is perfect because high-tech firms are increasingly looking to EFSC to increase their

foresight in funding the projects, knowing they will pay big dividends for decades to come.” Richey also thanked Sen. Debbie Mayfield and Rep. Tyler Sirois for their efforts to secure funding for CITE, and Sen. Tom Wright, Rep. Rene Plasencia and Rep. Thad Altman for their work supporting ACE. Here is a look at the two facilities and how they will benefit Brevard County. Center for Innovative Technology Education (CITE) CITE is designed to meet the urgent need for more technical support staff for rapidly growing and changing industries. The facility will feature labs that can be easily configured to provide students with the access to software used by high-tech employers. The approach will bring together cutting-edge equipment, course work and students working in teams to simulate working environments and the best practices used by industry. Importantly, training can be tailored to the specific needs of individual companies, giving them a

go-to place to expand their workforce and provide continuing education for existing staffs. It can also help start-ups get their footing as they begin building their technical teams. “It’s a unique facility that will stand out in Central Florida for what it can accomplish in a host of fields,” Richey said. In a sign of CITE’s importance, NASA and more than 50 companies wrote letters of support to the Legislature for the project. They included Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Blue Origin, Northrup Grumman and OneWeb Satellites. In all, CITE will support students in 16 college programs focused on aerospace, computer technology, engineering and advanced manufacturing where students can earn bachelor's degrees, associate degrees and college certificates. The 36,500-square-foot building will be located on the corner of Wickham Road and Post Road. It is expected to open its doors in 2024.

Scenic boat tour could be a great day trip from Viera BY R. NORMAN MOODY High gasoline prices might keep some people from making that longawaited summer vacation road trip. Short trips closer to Brevard County might be the alternative for some who prefer to stay close to home anyway.

Pollution and deterioration of Florida’s waters is not just a Brevard County issue. We frequently hear about algal blooms on the West Coast. And, sadly, fish and manatees are dying there too. What are other communities doing? Are they giving up or making progress? Well, Tampa for one, is

making real progress. Seagrass is one indicator of special interest to us. In the 1950s, Tampa Bay was covered by some 40,000 acres of seagrass meadows. By 1982, that had declined to 21,650 acres. Today, the Bay is back up to more than 34,000 acres and the community has

ClinCloud clinical research picks Viera for third office

BY ERNEST ARICO Do you know someone or have a family member that could be displaying early signs of memory loss, liver disease, dementia or Alzheimer’s? If the answer is yes to any of these symptoms, you may want to check out the new private, clinical research company that’s opened an office in Viera. ClinCloud, which began in 2017 with two offices in Maitland, was established to bring communities together to inspire medical discoveries for tomorrow's future through education and technological advances. In August 2021, ClinCloud opened its latest Viera branch at 7000 Spyglass Court in Suite 130. The office specializes in memory care and gastrointestinal programs. Services include memory screenings, liver screenings, access to unique and cutting-edge treatment options, personalized care

and counseling services for enrolled participants. Jessica Branning, ClinCloud’s chief executive officer and founder, said the decision to open a Viera office was an easy one. “Viera is a growing location that also has a growing geriatric population,” she said. “Our mission is to create, connect and educate our communities on resources available through clinical research.” Branning said the clinic offers free, on-site patient assessments including memory and other cognitive assessments, liver ultrasounds and blood tests, as well as potential access to therapies for hard-to-treat conditions. “We help match patients with a specific medical condition with clinical research studies to find an effective treatment,” she said. “We will serve as your research specialists, as if you were to refer someone to a

specialist. We will take the burden off of you to conduct the trial match opportunities and communicate back the results.” ClinCloud’s team is comprised of some of the medical field's most innovative leaders who collectively have more than 40 years of clinical trial experience in patient retention and recruitment. The team is dedicated to filling the gap between the community and effective clinical trial enrollment. One of the company’s team leaders is Dr. Rosemary Laird, a board-certified geriatrician and ClinCloud’s principal investigator at the Viera clinic. “I am really happy they are in town,” Laird said. “Now our medical community won’t be missing out on this service.” Laird, a clinical associate professor in the Department of Geriatrics at the Florida State University School of Medicine, said she likes

working for ClinCloud for two reasons. “First, they really communicate well with me as a collaborating physician," she said. “Second, they have really looked to do a lot in community support and educating the community through support groups about issues such as fatty liver problems.” Branning, a 2014 graduate of Rollins College with a bachelor’s degree in biology, said no insurance is required for memory assessments and the company doesn’t charge patients for any of the other services. In fact, she said the company compensates patients who want to participate in the research study with prepaid Visa cards. No patient’s personal information is disclosed to

any agency. Branning said the company is reimbursed for its research, data and clinical studies by pharmaceutical companies, government agencies and academic institutions. “These are really important and exciting times for us right now,” Branning said. “We are making great progress in slowing down the progression of diseases like Alzheimer’s. The more people we get to participate in our clinical research studies, the better chance we have of finding a cure.” For more information, visit the clinic at 700 Spyglass Court, Suite 130 in Viera; call 407-6364031, ext. 122; email info@ clincloudresearch.com, or go to clincloudresearch.com V V

New store opening at The Avenue provides comfort for the sole BY MIKE GAFFEY A new store coming to The Avenue Viera this fall offers relief for aching feet. The Good Feet Store, a manufacturer and retailer of premium, personally fitted arch support inserts, is opening its first Brevard County franchise at 6729 Colonnade Ave., Suite 107. “I think it will be a great complement to the neighboring stores like SAS Shoes,” said Kevin Cedik, the general manager at The Avenue Viera. Based in Carlsbad, California, The Good Feet Store provides arch supports designed to help alleviate foot, knee, hip and back pain. Available in a wide range of flexibilities — extra firm to soft — the arch supports are customized for various activities, shoe preferences and work environments. A specialist at each franchise measures a

customer’s feet and takes the person’s lifestyle and arch size into account during a free fitting and test walk. No appointment is necessary. Once properly fitted, a customer can wear the new arch supports home. A 2021 company survey found about 98 percent of adults experience foot, knee, hip or back pain that interferes with their dayto-day life and activities and nearly 50 percent of individuals who experience that pain have learned to live with it. The Good Feet Store locations also carry shoes, cushions and other foot-care accessories. The 1,600-square-foot store at the site of the former GNC is one of four new tenants that have opened or are set to open this fall at The Avenue Viera, Cedik said. Business Scoop Residents would welcome a third Publix proposed for Viera/Suntree area BY MIKE GAFFEY Viera residents Lisa Austin and Suzanne Bain greeted the news of a possible third Publix supermarket in the VieraSuntree area with a mix of surprise and delight. “The population is just exploding and it’s going to continue to do so, so the density is going to be there in terms of customer base and we probably need it,” Austin said about the new grocery store planned in Addison Village Center, south of Health First Viera Hospital. Austin and Bain were letting their dogs cavort at Addison Dog Park, not far from the proposed location of the Publix on the east side of Stadium Parkway between Ivanhoe Drive and Spur Drive. A site plan at The Viera Company website depicts a 48,367-square-foot Publix grocery store, a 1,400-square-foot liquor store, 7,200 square feet of adjacent retail space, a future 4,800-square-foot shop, 344 parking spaces and five outparcel spaces along Stadium Parkway and Ivanhoe Drive. Eva Rey, the Vice President of Community Management & Communications with The Viera Company, said in an email that the company could not comment on the

project. A spokesman for Lakeland-based Publix did not respond to a request to comment. The new grocery store joins a Publix Super Market at Stadium Corners at Viera at 5380 Stadium Parkway, Suite 100, and another Publix at Suntree Square at

7777 N. Wickham Road. Bain said she usually shops at the Stadium Parkway Publix but would gladly visit the new grocery store. “Some people are saying we wish we had a Trader Joe’s,” Bain said of the California-based grocery

store chain. “We have the two Publixes and it would be nice to have a Trader Joe’s. But I would absolutely love another Publix.” Suntree resident Mark Fitzsimmons, who usually shops at Walmart and Target, said he might give the new Publix a try. “Maybe,” Fitzsimmons said. “It depends on the quality of the food.” Publix supermarkets

are known throughout the South for their friendly staff, clean stores, quality brand items and popular bakeries and delis. Bain offered a friendly warning to Sunshine State tourists who visit a Publix for the first time. “Don’t ever, ever stand between a Floridian and that fried chicken,” Bain said. “You’ll get eaten alive.” VV

Newly-formed Beagles of Brevard group proves popular BY BETTY PORTER A newly formed group called Beagles of Brevard, established by beagleloving owners and their dogs, has quickly tripled its membership. Melbourne resident Owen Brackett started the group and, while it has only been a few months since it formed, he said the group has tripled in size and is still growing at a fast pace. “We now have about 25 members. I started the group after I got my beagle named Ruckus,” Brackett said. “I was looking to connect with other beagle owners close by. There are beagle groups in the state, but all are quite a distance away including Orlando, Tampa and Miami. This group will allow Brevard residents to connect with one another, share experiences and go on adventures with our dogs.”

The group recently met at Pieloch Dog Park Viera East. The beagles seemed very friendly, running around together, tails wagging at the modern, new, off-leash dog park. Owners were pleased. Melbourne native Gloria Lorey and her husband, Kevin, were among the group that met at the dog park with their 10-year-old beagle named Augie (short for Augustine and named for Gloria’s favorite city in Florida, St. Augustine). Augie was adopted by Kevin when he worked for PITA. Augie, the then 1-year-old pup, had been found wandering around in the cold in January in an open area on Virginia's Eastern Shore. They later found out that Augie had been owned by a hunter, who when contacted was only concerned with getting the expensive collar back, and not the dog.

VIERA VOICE Courtesy of Jessica Backer

Beagles of Brevard enjoyed an outing at the Pieloch Dog Park Viera East.

“For us, having Augie as part of our family is such a joy,” Gloria Lorey said. “He is actually the first dog I ever had and I absolutely adore him. We are looking forward to meeting other local beagle owners through this new group.” Beagles come in all sorts of colors, from the traditional tricolor — brown, white, and black” to a lemon and a reverse chocolate tricolor, but every

beagle has its own unique shading. Their floppy ears and white tipped tails are well known traits of the breed. They range in size from 15 to 40 pounds. Beagles are one of the most well-known breeds around the world and are noted for their ability to assist in hunting. “Their tendency to be true companions is gaining in popularity,” Brackett said. “They make

wonderful family dogs. They are extremely smart and friendly. Their loyalty knows no bounds, nor does their constant desire to play. “We are hoping to expand our outings to include other parts of Brevard County in the future, but for now we will try meeting once a month at Pieloch Dog Park.” Pieloch Dog Park Viera East is located off Murrell Road at 1703 Cross Creek Blvd. at Woodside Park. It features large, fenced areas for both large and small dogs and lots of activities for them, including bridges, tunnels, trees and cute, fire hydrant water misting stations. There are canopied, shaded seating areas for the dog owners. Interested beagle owners can learn more about the new group by searching Beagles of Brevard on Facebook. VV

Volunteer group provides care, homes for rescued poodles “We're always looking for foster parents, because the need just doesn't end.”

BY MARIA SONNENBERG At an age when he should have been cherished and pampered, Sammy was homeless and wandering the streets. The little black poodle must have once belonged to someone, but now no one wanted him … until Coastal Poodle Rescue stepped in to provide a happy next chapter in the life of the senior dog. The volunteers at Coast Poodle Rescue are, unfortunately, all too familiar with the stories of dogs like Sammy. “We find that some people, when their dogs get older, they just don’t want them,” said Peg Cronic, the vice president and placement coordinator for the rescue group. It may be that the owner gets sick or passes away and the family doesn’t want the added responsibility. It may be that the dog’s medical needs are too financially onerous. It may just be that having a puppy seems more attractive than caring for an older pet. Conversely, a young dog can also be abandoned because it has too much energy or needs too much attention. The reasons are ultimately irrelevant to Coastal Poodle Rescue volunteers. What is critical is finding Sammy and his fellow homeless dogs, young or old, a new home.

VIERA VOICE Courtesy of Carol Krahn

Sammy's life turned around when he was adopted from Coastal Poodle Rescue.

Harriet Prine launched the group in 2004 after becoming involved with a rescue group in the Tampa area. “I realized the great need to help abandoned dogs,” said Prine, who soon realized rescue became a ministry. She had owned poodles before and chose that breed for the group’s name, but, in reality, Coastal Poodle Rescue has saved everything from miniscule Yorkies to large Goldendoodles. Working with only private donations and the income from fundraisers such as an annual reunion, plus the significantly discounted help of veterinarians such

as Island Animal Hospital and the huge hearts of its volunteers, Coastal Poodle Rescue rehomes poodles and poodle mixes from shelters into foster homes until permanent homes can be found. “We’re always looking for foster parents, because the need just doesn’t end,” said Cronic, who herself has adopted six rescues from the group since she joined the group in 2009 after retiring from Intersil. Sammy’s saviors were to be what rescue groups call “failed foster parents” Carol and Ryan Krahn. “I thought he would stay with us until we found him a forever home,” she said. It turned out that Sammy was already home. “He quickly became attached to our entire family and we couldn’t imagine giving him up,” Krahn added. He’s hard of hearing and doesn’t see that well, but that does not stop Sammy from ladling on the love and, as a bonus, he is also flawless with his manners. “He’s the perfect companion and we love him so much,” Krahn said. Fostering a dog from Coastal Poodle Rescue simply entails opening your heart and home to a creature

in need. The group pays for costs such as veterinarian visits, flea preventatives and grooming until a permanent home can be found.

AHA

“All we ask is for a safe place where they can heal, because these animals are victims of circumstances beyond their control,” Cronic said. To foster, give of your time or money, or to adopt your new best furry friend, call 321-459-2652 or visit coastalpoodlerescue.org. VV

Enjoy baby back ribs with Bourbon Barbecue sauce This rendition of ribs is unflinchingly solid and criminally outstanding in the oven, as they are fall-apart tender and the result is gangster. The sauce is big with personality and the ribs can be finished off on the outdoor grill.

Two racks of baby back ribs — washed, dried, back membranes removed Juice of 1 lemon

RUB 1 tsp each of ground cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, chipotle powder, Anaheim chili powder, Applewood smoked sea salt, hickory smoked sea salt, oregano, thyme, sweet smoked Spanish paprika; 2 T brown sugar, ½ tsp mustard powder, ¼ tsp of Allspice powder — Mix well.

PREHEAT OVEN TO 300 degrees Massage ribs with lemon juice and the rub mixture front and back. Place them inside storage bags to marinate overnight. Let ribs stand at room temperature for about 45 minutes. In a deep roasting pan, lay the ribs meat side down. Don’t add any liquid to the pan, as the fat from the ribs will render out. Cover tightly with foil and bake low and slow for about 4½ hours. Take them out of the oven and remove the foil. Turn on the broiler. Baste them liberally with the sauce and

broil 5 to 7 minutes, being careful they don’t burn. (You can omit broiling and place them on the grill)

BOURBON SAUCE 1 medium Vidalia onion — chopped 2 tsp of the dry rub ¼ cup of Bourbon ¼ cup of ACV — Apple Cider Vinegar ½ cup of water ¼ cup tomato paste ¼ cup of molasses 2 Chipotle peppers in adobo (or more for additional kick) 2 bay leaves 3 to 4 dashes of Liquid Smoke 1 tsp of ground mustard powder 2 Tbsp Worcestershire ¼ cup brown sugar 1 cup ketchup 1 tsp of instant coffee powder (or ¼ cup of regular coffee)

Sweat the onions in butter. Add the 2 tsp of the dry rub to color the onions; cook off spices for a few minutes. Add the bourbon

and reduce for a few minutes. Incorporate tomato paste and cook for an additional minute, then add all other ingredients. Cook on low down for 30 to 45 minutes. The sauce will thicken as it cools down. Remove bay leaf and serve alongside ribs.

Several Brevard will celebrate Independence Day with fireworks and other activities.

Celebrate but also remember the meaning of Fourth of July BY NANETTE HEBDIGE We’ve finally arrived at the Fourth of July to venerate our Independence Day, a holiday deserving much pomp and ceremony. Before you don your barbecue hat and pop open a cold one, we always need a gentle reminder that this holiday isn’t just about cookouts. Take a minute to remember the annual birthday of our nationhood, which gave us liberation from British rule and commemorates the passage of our Declaration of Independence. “We typically don’t do much celebrating on the Fourth,” said Danny Moran of Rockledge. “We just don’t think that far ahead and like to spend a nice quiet day. This year we have family visiting, so we decided to fire up the barbecue, invite our neighbors and have a small get together.”

Festivities usually include parades, beach campouts, park picnics and gatherings with loads of cookouts and vast quantities of food. Culminating with the much anticipated fireworks displays. Moran added, “we love cooking outdoors and we’ve hardly used our patio this year. And we’re looking forward to the German potato salad my wife puts together.” “My family originated from Germany,” Lucy Moran said with a smile, “and that’s one of the old recipes I love to make from scratch”. The grills are ready, but if a summer afternoon shower should interrupt, there are alternatives. Fall back on your plan B, Bourbon Barbecue Ribs in the oven. “There’s a lot of turmoil going on in our country now, but we always remember what the Fourth is all about,” Danny Moran said. V V

BY NANETTE HEBDIGE The margarita (which means daisy in Spanish) was invented in the late 1930s. It was originally called the Daisy, and it was invented in Mexico, a classic cocktail consisting of Tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and a splash of soda served over ice.

There are many speculations about where it originated. One version was that it was named after actress Rita Hayworth, whose real name was Margarita Casino. Or it could have been Mexican restaurateur Danny Herrera, who made it popular in 1938 for Ziegfeld Girl Marjorie King. One thing is for sure,

Margaritas are world renown and include many variations, but the classic consists of blanco Tequila, mixed with lime juice and orange liqueur, often served in a glass with a salted rim and a slice of lime. What can be better than offering a cool and refreshing pitcher of Margaritas for your Fourth of July celebration? V V

Viera novelist’s thrillers keep readers on edge

BY SUE DeWERFF

What do the following have in common? Fast-paced, non-stop, nailbiting action, high-adventure, international mystery, foreign intrigue, suspense, tension, unexpected violence, and creative plot twists, and turns! They are the essential elements of great, gripping fiction that are all skillfully interwoven into Thomas Belisle’s complex thriller novels. They deliver riveting stories that inject real-world people, places and technology into each scene while stretching the imagination about ominous

possibilities. The Viera resident, military veteran and aircraft industry specialist began his writing career with a memoir for his family. He then moved on to fiction. He incorporates his experiences from five continents around the world to infuse realism into his thrillers, and makes his readers feel like they are actually in the middle of the non-stop action. “I chose my own style of writing, focusing on transporting my readers into a world that might be a little familiar to them, while opening the doors to completely new environments that they

I also keep my chapters short, for continuity sake, and to help my readers stay focused on the evolving story.” His novels center on the main character, Matt “ACE” Black, an F-22 fighter pilot and family man who is forced to confront one deadly challenge after another, facing insurmountable odds, and trying to somehow come out alive. “I’m an avid reader of action thrillers. My favorite authors include David Baldacci, Clive Cussler, Brad Thor, Nelson DeMille, and the late Vince Flynn,” he said. “I admired their writing styles, their plot lines, and the characters in their stories. They were my inspiration to write my own fiction.” Since the publication of his first two action-thriller books in 2020 and 2021, he has received great reviews and high praise from his readers. His first novel, “Raptor

Bloom,” pits two men from different cultures in a life or death battle. Matt “Ace” Black and a radicalized Syrian named Khalil Ruffa are brought together by fate and circumstance in a violent clash of ideology and intellect. The tension builds throughout the story leading the reader down winding intersecting paths. The stakes are high — the theft of America’s top secret technology is being used by Khalil and a rogue Iranian ayatollah to bring the United States to its knees and turn the Persian Gulf into a nuclear battlefield. His book offers plenty of suspense and intrigue, Iranian subterfuge, stolen U.S. intellectual secrets, corruption of America’s critical technology, high treason, assassinations, rogue satellites and intense aerial combat. Belisle’s second nailbiting, rapid-pace action thriller, “Taking the Dream Spinner,” is super charged with suspense, mystery, intrigue, and plenty of action. The plot continues the exploits of Black, his family and friends on an anniversary cruise out of Port Canaveral — a vacation that they will never forget. Known by his fighter-pilot call sign “Ace,” the athletic combat warrior had plenty of training and experience when tested in the sky against America’s enemies. But the situation he finds himself in now is entirely different from anything he experienced before. He never picked up on the indicators of impending doom from the moment he stepped foot on the luxury cruise ship sailing out of Port Canaveral — a last-minute senior officer crew change, an odd discovery on a private

island, an unprecedented itinerary change while underway, mysterious activity in a strange port and the impossible appearance of a ghost from his past. Ace suddenly finds himself captive to terrorists in the middle of the Caribbean, a pawn like the other 3,000 passengers, and caught up in a deadly game of geopolitical gamesmanship. He has to confront a particular kind of evil nobody expected, and protect himself and his family from the danger enveloping the ship. The seemingly inescapable situation will tax every ounce of his strength, ingenuity and luck to stop them — and prevent disaster. The success of Belisle’s first two novels was enough to motivate the author to begin writing the next exciting story in his series involving fighter pilot Black. Belisle’s third thriller is nearly complete in its first draft and should be published by the end of the year. “My third and final novel in the Ace Black saga will find our hero in another challenging environment, facing a new kind of threat,” Belisle said. “His quest will place him in the Far East confronting an old enemy ... and some new ones. The fate of an entire country will be in his hands while the clock ticks down toward a disaster that he doesn’t know if he can stop.” “Raptor Bloom” and “Taking the Dream Spinner” are available in paperback, hardcover and e-book on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble or go to thomasbelisleauthor.com. VIERA VOICE Sue DeWerff

Helen Morr shows off her painting titled "Cactus Blossom," which won first place at the spring Brevard Watercolor Society's Splash Display event.

Artist, 90, wins first place for watercolor painting BY SUE DeWERFF Helen Morr has enjoyed painting since her youth. But it was not until recently, at age 90, that she finally realized just how good her artwork is. A self-described perfectionist who loves nature, Morr was awarded first place for her flower entry entitled “Cactus Blossom” at the annual spring Brevard Watercolor Society’s Splash Display event. She was awarded a $250 cash prize, a $250 credit from a local framing outlet and a blue ribbon for her painting. “I did not expect this, and it was a real shock, but I was thrilled when I found out I had won my first ever first place ribbon,” the Suntree resident said. Morr said her friend and fellow artist, Margie Carey, encouraged her to enter the painting. “She told me, ‘you get that beautiful piece entered now,’ ” said Morr, who has received several honorable mentions during past years for her paintings, but has never won a first place prize. Morr said she did not have much time during her youth or married years while raising her children to pursue painting. She finally made the decision to get more involved with her passion after moving to Suntree after her retirement, when she was in her 70s. She became a member of the Brevard Watercolor Society and has been involved with other artist guilds and groups during the past several years. She now attends a weekly artist meeting at Suntree Advent Lutheran Church and has loved being a part of the small, tight-knit group where she said she has made great

friends. Her paintings also can be found displayed in the church. Morr’s connection to art began when she was just 5 years old, living in a two-story flat with her parents in St. Louis.

“The detail and depth of her watercolor paintings are truly unbelievable, not only for her age, but for anyone.” – Donna Greene

“I remember finding a can of red enamel paint in the basement, and proceeded to paint a splotch on the side of the building. Needless to say, my folks were not so happy about my art antics,” she said and laughed. Her subjects include everything from outdoor scenery, flowers, animals, buildings, barns and many varieties of foliage and nature — even coconuts. Donna Hartman, the president of the Brevard Watercolor Society nonprofit, said she was thrilled when Morr joined the group. “Her talent is amazing, and she is a great addition to our wonderful group of artists.” “The detail and depth of her watercolor paintings are truly unbelievable, not only for her age, but for anyone. She is extremely talented and I am honored to know such an amazing artist,” her neighbor Donna Greene said. “I kept telling her how good she really was, and I hope now she finally believes it.” VV

Seated under a tent in her driveway, a tiara-clad Johnnie Mae Jenkins waved and blew kisses as dozens of motorists drove past her Revilla Lane home in Rockledge on June 7 to wish her a happy 99th birthday. “I’m really enjoying this,” Jenkins said as drivers showered her with flowers, cards and good wishes. It’s the second straight drive-by celebration for Jenkins, a Bainbridge, Georgia native who arrived in Rockledge at age 13 and never left. “I had one last year for my 98th,” she said. “My granddaughter and my family decided to do another

one so here I am at 99. We’ve been celebrating this one since Friday. I had a tea party on Friday.” Among the well-wishers were Rockledge and Cocoa police officers, Rev. David Bryant, Jenkins’ pastor at Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Cocoa, and Rockledge City Councilman Michael Cadore. “Mrs. Jenkins, aka Mother Jenkins, is such a beloved woman, a true living angel who is a true blessing to everyone who has ever met her,” Cadore said. “She adores my wife, Queen Cornelia. I’ve known Mother Jenkins for decades and my Queen Cornelia even longer. Mother Jenkins embraces life to the fullest.

She is a beautiful example of how God can keep you in perfect peace, especially for those who keep their mind on Him. “My wife and I say thank you, Mother Jenkins, for the love and wisdom that you continue to share with your family, friends, and community.” Five generations of Jenkinses were on hand to celebrate with Jenkins, who has “a bunch of greatgrandchildren that I can’t even count” and five greatgreat grandkids. “Next year’s going to be the big one,” said Jenkins’ daughter-in-law Cheryl Jenkins of Rockledge. “She’ll be 100 then. We’ll be looking forward to that.” V V

Community shares input on local transportation projects at annual open house BY SUE DeWERFF While Brevard County continues to grow at a record pace, it has been the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization’s mission to connect the community to the many roadway and transportation projects currently happening throughout the county.

On June 7, during its “Way to Grow” themed annual open house, held at the Space Coast Association of Realtors in Melbourne, the organization shared information with both in-person and virtual attendees about its Draft Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for Fiscal Years 2023 to 2027. The TIP, a staged

program encompassing a five-year period consisting of all regionally significant transportation improvements to all modes of travel in Brevard County, identifies projects for maintaining and improving the transportation system funded by federal and

The meaning of life — more than a period between birth and death Beep. Beep. Beep. Another alarm goes off, ripping into the silence of the night. Medication is over. Life is calling. Time to replace the drip bag to keep the pain away and sustain what is left of life. The fight continues. Life … Merriam-Webster includes more than 20 definitions for the word life. Britannica goes over the attributes that may define life from various perspectives. It is difficult to precisely define what life is and what being alive means. Is having a pulse enough? Life is more than the period from birth to death, the period of existence. What one does in that period is what makes life and has to be worth it. Take bees, for example. There are an incredible number of species worldwide — about 20,000 — 4,000 of those native to the U.S. Their lifespan varies from two weeks to 6 years, depending on their species and the role in their colony. From helping with the continuation of their own species to building nests and pollinating, a very important job performed that benefits all living species on this planet, bees have limited time to make it count. state sources. Planning for a connected system on the Space Coast touched on topics such as growth and economic development, multi-modal options — including trails, complete streets, and intelligent transportation. The presentation highlighted top transportation priority projects throughout the county, including the widening of Ellis Road in Melbourne (No. 1 priority), NASA Causeway bridge replacement, Space Commerce Way widening, U.S. 192 and Hollywood/ Evans intersection improvements and the

design of a county-wide Transportation Management Center (TMC). Citizens were encouraged to share their thoughts about the transportation projects to be implemented during the next five years. Many attendees commented on their desire for bicycle and pedestrian improvements and enhancements to ensure connectivity throughout Brevard County. Jo Ellen Dessert, of Melbourne Beach, a cyclist, said she hopes to see the county do more to add bike trails to the south county area. Others voiced concern about proposed safety enhancements and infrastructure, and several citizens, both who attended

in person and virtually, expressed both positive and negative feedback about a roundabout coming to the Cape Canaveral area. During the last decade, the Department of Transportation (DOT) has added two roundabouts in the Viera area in the county. “The Transportation Improvement Program is a realistic forecast of projects that have committed state or federal funds so it serves as the SCTPO’s short range plan, as it provides a five-year implementation schedule,” Executive Director Georganna Gillette said. “The list of funded transportation projects is developed annually with input from the community and updated throughout the

year, so we encourage our citizens to get involved in the planning process by joining us at our annual Open House, and voicing their transportation concerns.”
