birds begin returning to our area. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to make a difference in the lives of children, check into a school near you and see if you can volunteer to read to students or help in a number of ways. This fall, we are involved in many activities, including Brevard Remembers 9/11 at the Space Coast Stadium. Be sure to bring your friends to this wonderful event. The stadium used to be only for baseball and the occasional softball games, but now it is opening to more and more community-minded events, including the Art of Sand in October.

To say that Shirley Zillig is a fan of space flight would be an understatement.

“We’ve seen nearly every launch of the space shuttle,” said Zillig as she stood watching the last liftoff of the last shuttle, Atlantis, which returned safely and is undergoing renovation for permanent display at Kennedy Space Center.

If Jim Reynolds were a mythical hero, he would be Paul Bunyan. But instead of Babe, the blue ox, his sidekick, King, the Great Dane, is about the same size.

Reynolds recently cleared land of some giant yellow pines and milled the lumber on-site for a barn near his West Canaveral Groves home, a functional structure coveted by farmers and ranchers across Brevard. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I was a kid, we had a steam saw mill,â&#x20AC;? said the Coast Guard veteran and retired ship captain. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I guess you could say I have come full circle.â&#x20AC;?

The barn Reynolds built is for Country Eight, a goat dairy at 2295 Adamson Road in Cocoa, Fl. It is also the home of the Green Marketplace on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Reynolds created much of the entire structure by hand, even the soldered metal and hewn-wood hinges. Floors are dirt or wood, save for the milking room, where a concrete floor with drain allows for frequent wash-downs. The goats are led up a ramp for the ergonomic convenience of the barn and ranch owner, Dave Butler. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jim has just blown us all away by what he has created,â&#x20AC;?

said Butler, whose brother created a documentary of the process as a film student at Brevard Community College. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s both beautiful and functional. He also did a chicken coop where we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to go in to collect eggs; we just open a door from the outside and reach in.â&#x20AC;?

The structures are made of the tall pines prevalent around Brevard, though a softwood, it is so hard it is nicknamed Merritt Island mahogany. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Look at these beams,â&#x20AC;?

Reynolds said, pounding a fist on the supporting structure, accented at the soffits with slats for a crossbreeze. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If a hurricane heads our way, I say we all get in the barn.â&#x20AC;?

Married for nearly a halfcentury, his wife, Wanda, gave him an out-of-this-world anniversary present two years ago. He flew to 20,000 feet from TICO Airport in Titusville and jumped out of the plane. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What a thrill,â&#x20AC;? Reynolds said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d do it again in a minute!â&#x20AC;?

Reynolds wants to help landowners in need of tree clearing so he can harvest wood to build a 1,500-square-foot addition to his home, a reciprocal gift for his wife.

Former New York Police Department Lieutenant Patrick Moynihan of Palm Bay lost a lot of friends on Sept. 11, 2001 when terrorists crashed planes into the World Trade Center towers.

He wants the Space Coast community to continue to honor the memory of those lost or injured in the attack, especially on the 10th anniversary day of remembrance to be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11 at the Space Coast Stadium in Viera.

Moynihan helped establish Brevard Remembers 9/11 and is past president of a local chapter of the 10-13 Club, comprised of former NYPD and other law enforcement agencies.

The club is so named because 10-13 is the distress signal for “officer down.” The signal was heard frequently on 9/11 at ground zero.

“We want to make sure 9/11 will not be forgotten.

Last year we did an event at the Wickham Park Pavilion, but we were approached about the event at Space Coast Stadium, so we decided to combine the two,’’

“My interest stems from my intense feeling of love for a country of which I am a citizen by choice, rather than by accident of birth,’’ he said.

The 9/11 tragedy, and the American response in recov-

ering from it, is similar to others suffered by the United States, most notably the attack that thrust the country into World War II, according to Moynihan.

“I always compare it to Pearl Harbor; 9/11 has had a similar effect. It’s a shame that Pearl Harbor is not remembered on a yearly basis.

It’s the same with 9/11. I thought it shouldn’t be forgotten. We ought to educate the youth on how we, as a

country, react to catastrophe,” Moynihan said.

The master of ceremonies for the event will be Colonel Danny Mc Knight, US ArmyRet, of Black Hawk Down fame. Also expected is Master Sergeant Noel Sepulveda, USAF-Ret., the recipient of the Air Medal for his brave actions in response to the terrorist attack on the Pentagon. About 8,000 are expected to attend.

Members of The Power of Faith, Healing and Deliverance Temple meet in a private conference room at the facility at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. each Sunday. Services for the crowd of about 25 are led by Pastor Curtis Watkins and his wife, Bonita, who leads music and prayers. Their daughter Curissa and Evangelist Sadie Rodney sometimes sing solos.

Watkins’ ministry is truly a family endeavor and every member is “part of the family,” said Watkins, who has been ministering 19 years. He began the Titusville effort about two years ago and hopes to grow into a church building in the near future.

Bonita Watkins thanked the members for a great participation in their recent picnic at Fox Lake Park and told them that their pastor loved being involved in their lives.

“Your pastor loves you. He is touchable and not caught up with titles or names,” she shared. “He’s in the middle of all the activities.”

Curtis Watkins and two of his members, Weston and Sharon Harris, work fulltime at Joe’s Club, an Alzheimers Day Care in Titusville. Watkins and Weston Harris work as transporters for the facility.

Sharon Harris is the activity coordinator and an aide.

“He is always serving someone. We love our pastor,” said Sharon Harris.

“We are so blessed that we have him.”

Watkins’ July 10 topic was peace.

Using verses from Mark, Watkins compared each person as a ship that may be tossed around in the wind, yet peace is still available anywhere, anytime.

“Trials don’t have you, you have them,” said Watkins. “We can speak to the wind in our lives.”

The church will participate in a revival in Melbourne from Aug. 15 to 19 and will sponsor a Night of Royality on Sept. 24 at LaCita Country Club. For information, call Watkins at 321-576-8249. SL

Once a month, members of an online group meet for a common interest — the ukulele.

“It’s a passion for the Hawaiian music and the playing of the ukulele instrument,” said Roland Galindo, co-organizer of the Space Coast Ukulele Club. “It’s all about the Hawaiian atmosphere, the music, the food and to just kick back.”

Many members of the 45-member club once lived in Hawaii and miss the islands, its language, music, and dance.

“When I tell people I’m a part of this club, they are surprised and they don’t think these groups exist,” said member John Silva. “But once they listen to it, they get pretty hooked.”

Recently, family members have gotten hooked as well. Wives, girlfriends and daughters of members began hula dancing at meet ups to the ukuleles playing in the background.

Member Darryl Birch said, “It’s really about the lifestyle and love we have for each other and the ukulele.”

Cocoa and Rockledge, Florida gems Touring the Town John Trieste

In Cocoa, stop at the recently restored Porcher House, built in 1916 and an excellent example of 20th century classical revival architecture, adapted to our Florida climate. This 10-bedroom house is composed of native coquina rock, and the interior is finished with teak, oak and cedar. On the National Register of Historic Places, this landmark is now open for public viewing and special occasions.

You can also visit the excellent Brevard Museum of History and Science at 2201 Michigan Avenue or the Florida Solar Energy Center on Clearlake Road in Cocoa. If you are interested in gardening, stop at Rockledge Gardens on Route 1 for a unique tour. If you have a sweet tooth, visit the brand new Grimaldi’s Chocolate Factory on Route 1. This is just a highlight of some of Brevard’s many gems. SL

Fear Life is full of anxious moments, anguish, danger and feelings of unpleasantness. Some people are fearful, while others appear to be fearless. Scientists have labeled fears with an endless list of phobias.

People who live a long life are able to deal with the emotion of unpleasant situations by coping in a positive manner.

They take charge with a trust in God, a prayer, alternative solutions and wise use of resources.

In the current environment, retirees have listed a number of their fears: Government fears such as tax increases, value of insured savings and bonds, Social Security and health programs and financial fears such as safety of investments, market fluctuations, real estate value changes and concern about their money running out before they do.

My financial advisor recently sent a letter of warning: “People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.” He outlined how, in 2008, the financial markets experienced substantial declines. Then he wrote about risk and volatility. From panic and despair, clients moved to “more smiles and a sense of relief.” Now What?

Spiritual fears about the after life; medical fears of cancer, heart problems, dementia, wellness and insurance; safety fears for crime, frauds, scams, break-ins and identity theft; and the fear of constant change with innovations, technology, institutions and the environment are also among fears expressed. Few older folks were fearful of global warming, climate

The inability to downsize and concerns about increased property taxes and insurance premiums have impacted their budgets.

Unfulfilled dreams of travel to exotic places, cruises and time to enjoy the twilight years are among the fears that create tension and anguish.

Older people have had a life of experiences. Many know what works, why things went wrong and where to find assistance. They have a wider view and perspective. They deal with their fears in a personal way or seek help from family, church, community and government sources. For a life with less fear, use decision making tools. Analyze alternative solutions and consequences. Simplify and act wisely for a long life.

We seniors are all aware that as we age, the mind ages, also.

Some people’s minds stay bright and alert forever, it seems. My one grandmother was as sharp as a tack when she died at age 90 as she had been all her life. However, my other grandmother was afflicted by dementia for more than five years before she passed away at age 80. Alzheimer’s was not yet a known word, but we realized years later she’d had that. Today, we know that challenging the mind helps keep it sharp, slows down the onset of Alzheimer’s to some degree and if nothing else, keeping the mind working is more enjoyable than just letting it sit there.

There are many ways to challenge the mind and I’m about to challenge my readers to try what we refer to as continuing education for seniors. No, not going to school, not taking tests, not doing homework, but just being exposed to learning with our eyes, ears and mind along with other seniors. I am referring to the program known as Brevard ElderLearning. It is sponsored by Brevard Community College and Elderhostel, but ElderLearning is not classes. It presents low-cost, one-day programs and you attend only those that might interest you. Most programs take place on

one of the BCC campuses at the low cost of $6. Occasionally there is something special with another location or a higher cost, but choosing what to attend is up

to you.

The fall semester begins very soon, the first program giving us “A Taste of the Philippines.” Other topics you might like to consider are: Celtic Christianity and Spirituality, Senior Matters/Seniors Matter, Art Journaling, Planetarium Observatory, Acrylic Painting for All and Nature Adventures.

This local, one-day drive will highlight some of the many gems in our own Brevard County. This is a great introduction to our county for out of the area guests when they visit.

July food drive exceeds goals at Palm Bay Senior Center

The first summer food drive at The Greater Palm Bay Senior Center has been a rousing success, exceeding the 1,000-pound goal for donations to be given to a variety of local charities.

Sponsored by the centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s outreach program, the drive is just one way the center helps out in the community, according to outreach co-chairman Peter Donchik, with chairman Barbara Roberts.

Once the donations are weighed, they are placed in a pantry at the center before being distributed to the St. Vincent De Paul organizations at St. Joseph and Our Lady of Grace Catholic churches in Palm Bay. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We collect food constantly and donate 500 to 700 pounds per month, but this is the first time weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done a special drive during the month of July.

We thought of putting 1,000 pounds as a goal and I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect to hit it but we exceeded it by the 14th of the month,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Donchick said.

She said that most of the food comes in during monthly general meetings and bingo games where players can get up to five cards for donating non-perishable food items and that cash donations are given to Second Harvest Food Bank in the account for the South Brevard Sharing Center. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They put it in their account so they can get more bang for their buck

purchasing food,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; she said.

After nearly 20 years involved in the organization, Domchik is proud of what outreach does to help the local hungry, â&#x20AC;&#x153;but without the senior center we would be nothing,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; he said.

Outreach conducts four fundraisers annually, including a Chinese Auction, two bunco card game nights and a flea market to be held Oct. 1, according to Domchik. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Proceeds from the events go to C.I.T.A. in Melbourne, Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, Disabled American eterans and the South Brevard Sharing Center,â&#x20AC;? Roberts said.

Other efforts by outreach include collecting hospital socks which are given to local homeless shelters, creating knitted or crocheted lap pads for children with serious illnesses attending Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis, collecting unopened hotel soaps and shampoos and donated mugs to be given to the homeless and supporting Camp Bright Star for kids who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

He was a gymnast in the Army.

He raced motorcyclesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a la Evel Knievelâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;over waterfalls. He roamed several states fixing steam turbines. He lost fortunes in real estateâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;twice. Now Bill Allen has commenced a new chapter of his life story with the publication of his childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fantasy books.

The West Melbourne resident continues working as an engineer with Harris Corporation, but fame may just be outside his office in the form of How to Slay a Dragon, the first of the Journal of Myrth trilogy of childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fantasy.

Aimed at the middle school market, Allenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book draws on the authorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability never to quite grow up. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think I do pretty well at getting into the mentality of a seventh grader, because I can still remember what it was like to be a seventh grader,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Allenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s alter ego, Greg Hart, is barely much of a boy, but that does

not stop him from being named in the prophecy that assures the people of Myrth that Greg will indeed save them from a very large dragon.

The author has encountered dragons in his own life. In his earlier days, he hightailed his motorcycle through observed trials, managing to jump the obstacles with his body somewhat intact. He delved into real estate with such deplorable timing that he always seemed to lose his shirt. During the 1980s, as a field engineer for General Electric, Allen â&#x20AC;&#x153;put out firesâ&#x20AC;? throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana as he lent support to the steam turbine industry. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You would get called because of a crisis, so you came upon a lot of people under a lot of stress,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Those days gave me a lot of insight into the character of human beings.â&#x20AC;?

When the girl who was to become his wife mentioned her desire to write a book, she was hesitant to get started. He was not.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I thought it would be easy, so I started writing to show her.â&#x20AC;?

He immersed himself into conferences and writersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; guilds, eventually self-publishing his book, which has now been picked up by Bell Bridge Books.

Two other Greg Hart books are due out next year.

You would think the guy must be at least 800 years old to have done all these things, but Allen will tell you that his life has been packed with plenty of punch.

If you look hard enough you can see humor all over the place. Most of us get in the car and are totally focused on where we’re going or what we need to do. Turn on the radio and you can be further distracted. Text on the cell phone and until you hear the crash, you’re totally distracted from all the fun stuff around you.

Case in point. I’m driving to the grocery store the other day, and needing a smile, I observed everything and I noticed something. The vehicles people drive seem to be totally opposite their physical stature. I saw this huge pickup truck and when it stopped, out jumped someone about 5 feet tall. How in the world did he get up in that thing in the first place?

Then I noticed one of those little tiny sewing machines on wheels where there are only two seats and no back end. When I looked in the window, the inside was completely filled by the driver. I followed the car until he stopped and got out. He must have been 6 ½ feet tall and maybe 300 pounds.I wondered how in the world he stuffed himself in that tiny car. So, I continued to observe. I saw old peo-

ple driving new cars, and new drivers in old cars. The kids driving the old beater cars that looked like they were put together with bubble gum and bondo were racing all over the place and their cars looked like they may just fall apart at the next stop sign.

The shiny new cars that the older people were driving were putt-putting so slowly they looked like they may stall. Now correct me if I’m wrong, but shouldn’t the new cars that can handle the abuse be the ones racing all over the place?

So next time you’re depressed get in the car, put down the cell phone and check out what’s going on around you. It just may bring a smile to your face!

Asian Mah Jongg, different, easier than American version By george wHite

There are many ways to play the tile game Mah Jongg, but Bob and Elide Wood of Palm Bay are building popularity for the Asian version at the Greater Palm Bay Senior Center held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of each month.

“We started with eight people and now we’re up to about 50 and we’re going into our fourth year. It started as a house game and it’s ballooned into this,’’ said Elide Wood.

The Asian version has slightly bigger tiles than the American version, and is played very much like the game gin rummy, with players collecting tiles with three of a kind, or runs of consecutive numbers, according to Elide Wood. There are no partners and no cost to join the game.

“It’s gotten very popular, but it’s still not as popular as the other Scottsmoor versions,’’ she said.

MimsShe admitted to cringing when someone says they know the game

from the version supplied on most computers, which is played completely differently.

The Asian version game at the senior center came about after a chance meeting between center member Sandy Nathanson and Josie Cochayong, who was raised in the Philippines by parents of Chinese descent, where the game originated.

Nathanson asked Cochayong if she knew the game and if she would pass on that knowledge to others in the area. Now both are regular members of the game night, during which they can play 16 to 18 games in a three-hour period.

“They play it a lot in China, mostly just to pass the time. It’s easier than other kinds. People can pick it up quickly,’’ Cochayong said.

In addition to the regular games, the Woods want to spread the understanding about Asian Mah Jongg by offering lessons during the month of August.

Cedar Creek’s Happy Hookers need yarn, ribbon and recycled supermarket plastic bags

Each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m., the Happy Hookers of Cedar Creek Life Center, an assisted living facility in Merritt Island, gather to share their creative talents to benefit others.

“The group began in 2007,” said member Carolyn Policht, and “consists of one-third volunteers and two-thirds residents.”

Knitting, crocheting and crafting items include cancer caps, heart monitor holders, infant hat and bootie sets, lap robes for seniors and hospice patients and purses and beach bags made from recycled plastic bags. Each donated item is accompanied by a card that reads, “Made with love by the Happy Hookers Crochet & Knit Club, Cedar Creek Life Center.”

Cindi Courbat had just unpacked her bags from a mission trip to Haiti when she heard the news. A series of deadly tornados had touched down in Tennessee, Alabama and western Georgia. She immediately pulled out her suitcase and began to fill it again. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My first thought was, if I can go to Haiti to help disaster victims there, I should surely respond when something happens this close to home,â&#x20AC;? Courbat said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was great to actually hand-deliver items directly to the families and hear their stories first-hand.â&#x20AC;?

Courbat is a West Melbourne resident with more than 600 hours of FEMA and faith-based first-responder and disaster-related training. She has responded to Haitiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2010 earthquake, numerous Gulf Coast storms and Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2004 hurricanes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gone with larger relief or mission groups as a team member, but this time I felt I could do something on my own,â&#x20AC;? Courbat said.

Recently, a reader asked me a question by email about the way his board makes decisions on awarding bids. There are several ways a board can award a bid. If it is an item that is part of the associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s approved budget, the board designates a person or committee to obtain and award bids. Once the budget is approved by the board, it may not be necessary for them to be directly involved.

Another possibility is what I call an â&#x20AC;&#x153;enabling motion,â&#x20AC;? something that is very common in government. The board generally knows a ballpark price of the desired item or service. The board would pass a motion enabling a designee to make the purchase with a â&#x20AC;&#x153;not to exceedâ&#x20AC;? price.

The board may establish ongoing policies regarding purchases depending on the amount of a purchase. For example, purchases under $1,000 would require only one bid, under $5,000 two bids, and anything over $5,000 would require three bids, etc.

Occasionally, an association may only be able to find one, or fewer, vendors than policy stipulates. When this happens, I would recommend that the board make the final decision and not an appointee or committee.

Your association is a corporation and standard business practices should apply to the bidding process. If your association has an accountant or auditor, they can make suggestions on policies and procedures that will pass their muster. This has been just a basic generalization to the bid authorization process. Hopefully, this stimulates ideas that may be useful to your association.

Fire rescuers bring home World Trade Center remnant By linda WigginS

Brevard County Fire Rescue (BCFR) Station 48 in Viera will be home to a permanent monument to Sept.

11, 2001 with nearly a ton of World Trade Center tower steel at its base.

Residents and tourists will be able to see, touch and smell Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most poignant piece of history in current lifetimes while they reflect, remember and pray, according to the project coordinator. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It brings back memories that will forever be seared

in my mind,â&#x20AC;? said Lt. Richard Broccolo.

He was on duty when the steel arrived at Station 80 on July 22. The beam will stored there awaiting monument construction.

A decade earlier, Broccoloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team from Brevard arrived at ground zero the day after 9/11 and worked

diligently as rescue efforts turned to grueling recovery.

The monumentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unveiling will be 11 a.m. the day of Brevard Remembers 9/11 at Space Coast Stadium, adjacent to Station 48. The public will then move to the memorial event in time for the gate opening at noon.

BCFR Lt. Tyler Cox, who is responsible for snagging the steel, said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is estimated that one in five Americans knows someone who lost a life or was directly affected by the events on 9/11. Beyond that, it has changed our way of life in so many ways. When we learned we were approved for this, just days ago, we went for it.â&#x20AC;?

Tyler knew the drill to getting one of the limited WTC pieces. Last year, his younger brother, 15-yearold Eagle Scout Jeff Cox, brought back the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first remnant for display at his Windermere, Fla., town hall. The pieces were only recently released, nearly a decade after the terrorist attacks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were still considered evidence from the crime scene,â&#x20AC;? said Tom Quinn, a Miami-Dade firefighter captain who retired to Brevard.

Quinn spent 14 days immediately after 9/11 doing urban search and rescue around the clock. He was named head of Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 28 search and rescue teams from 2003 to 2009, when technology was totally redeveloped in response to 9/11.

Quinn is coordinating the display of state-of-the-art vehicles and equipment at the stadium event. Firefighters, search and rescue, police and other firstresponders, as well as the US military, which has been responding ever since, will be represented.

Mary Ann Leigh, an accomplished nurse practitioner, never got around to having children. The ever-efficient professional eliminated the middleman.

She adopted her own grandchildren.

Coworkers with children gravitated to her in past jobs, serving until retirement in 1993 from the US Air Force at the old hospital at Patrick Air Force Base, and later at Holmes Regionalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s HOPE mobile unit for uninsured and low-income patients, which became Brevard Health Alliance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was a pediatric nurse, so I had a lot of answers to their questions,â&#x20AC;? Leigh said with a sly smile.

Many children in Brevard County donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have grandparents, or donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have grandparents living in the area, according to Leigh. Leighâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s solution? Adopta-grand. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I highly recommend it to anyone who does not have a close relationship

with their grandchildren or children. It really makes life richer,â&#x20AC;? Leigh said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t complain if your kids donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give you grandchildren, go and get some of your own.â&#x20AC;?

And so Leigh has, eight so far. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some are grown and gone off to college, but they still come for holidays and other special occasions. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just as important a relationship for them as it is for me.â&#x20AC;?

Erika Yesowitch and Amy Cheng are two of Leighâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youngest â&#x20AC;&#x153;granddaughters,â&#x20AC;? both entering 11th grade and best friends since their mothers had them in the same preschool together. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We go to the beach, we go to the park, movies and shows,â&#x20AC;? said Yesowitch, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It feels good that someone who cares about me wants to spend time with me.â&#x20AC;?

Leigh knows the drill. Leigh said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It feels good that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve invested your life in something that will leave this world a better place.â&#x20AC;? SL

New technologies have golfers flying high

Golf is a different game these days, with new technologies and materials helping players, young and old, drive longer and chip and putt better. one of the biggest changes is in drivers that are much bigger than oldschool drivers, yet are lighter and stronger, according to Chris Riley, club fitter at Golf USA on Wickham Rd. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Big drivers came on the scene in the late 90s and titanium changed the way we play. Now the Callaway Razr is made of forged composite that is 10 times stronger than titanium,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; he said.

He said that while the lighter weight helps increase club speed, and therefore distance, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the increase in the amount of â&#x20AC;&#x153;sweet spotâ&#x20AC;? or ideal place to hit the ball, that has made the difference. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For the better players, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s less noticeable because they always hit in the center. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just more room in the center so the casual golfer can do much better.â&#x20AC;?

Similarly, the development of hybrid irons with longer shafts, as well as putters with alignment aids, all have helped improve scores, as have new

golf balls designed for better durability and more control. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As you get older, your body is less able to hit the ball long,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; said Golf USA owner Martha Scholz. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been playing golf since age 7 but now, all the sudden, because (the driver) weighs less, I drive the ball farther at age 59 than I did at 29. The new technologies make the game more enjoyable for us,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; she said.

Most of her customers are in their 60s and 70s, but according to Scholz, the fastest-growing population segments learning the game now are juniors and women golfers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Especially now with the improvements, golf is a game for the ages,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; she said.

Riley said that a new youth movement, keyed on good fitness and led by U.S. open winner Rory McIlroy is also helping golf catch on. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In my opinion, Gary Player set the trend on fitness and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why he still plays well today. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something that has caught on and been adapted by the younger players,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; he said. SL

Is there any help for me?

—Uninsured Irma Dear Uninsured Irma: Yes, there is. The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) was created under the Affordable Care Act to assist uninsured people with a pre-existing condition get healthcare at affordable prices. PCIP will act as a bridge to 2014 when insurers will no longer be able to deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions like cancer, diabetes, asthma, etc.

In order to be eligible, you must be a citizen, or living in the United States, legally. Additionally, you must have been uninsured for at least six months and have had a problem getting insurance due to a pre-existing condition.

Based on your age, you could enroll in the Standard Plan for $376 a month. Benefits include preventative care paid at 100% with no deductible when you use an in-network doctor.

This care could include an annual physical, flu vaccination, routine adult mammograms and cancer screenings. Some lab tests are also included when a preventative diagnosis is used.

For other care, you would pay a $2,500 deductible in-network/$3,000 out-of-network deductible before PCIP pays for your health care and prescriptions. Once the deductible is met, you will pay 20 percent of in-network medical expenses. The maximum you will pay out-ofpocket for covered services in a calendar year is $5,950 in-network.

Additional benefits you could receive include hospital care, physician office visits, outpatient surgery, emergency room care, durable medical equipment, etc. Prescriptions would also be covered with a co-payment.

In Florida, there are presently about 38,000 physicians, 4,800 pharmacies and 312 hospitals in-network. Now, it is easier than ever to apply.

If you are not able to afford the new PCIP, there may be some other options through state health programs for lower income individuals.

Huck Long’s three wars By maria Sonnenberg

Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart are just three symbols of Huck Long’s outstanding military service.

In May 15,1943, just one week after graduating from high school, Homer “Huck” Long, Jr., like many of his young peers, joined the service. For Long, the day marked the start of a long, distinguished career in the U.S. Army and a life very different from what he had experienced in his boyhood home of Gallatin, MO (population: 1,600).

By 1944, Huck was in France with the 100th Infantry Division of the 399th Infantry Regiment. Fighting was fierce and never-ending.

“We fought primarily n heavily wooded mountains during the fall and winter of 1944 and 45,” Long said.

“The rain, snow and artillery tree bursts were enough on most days to be called close calls. Both the weather and the terrain, in addition to the enemy, made it tough going. From Marseille, the division fought its way up the Rhone Valley to the Maginot Line where it was temporarily held up to allow the Seventh Army units to be shifted to the Battle of the Bulge.”

While fighting by the Maginot Line, Long earned his first award, the Combat Infantry Badge. An appointment to West Point was an even better

The Korean War was Long’s second war. He was a second lieutenant of infantry with the 5th Cavalry Regiment at the Naktong perimeter. His second Combat Infantry Badge arrived at this time.

During the 1950’s, Long served as aide-de-camp to the 7th Army Commander in Germany, among other assignments.

“In Germany in the early 50’s, the results of the war were evident,” said Long. “Bicycles outnumbered autos.

Germans were glad to get work. Most were more than willing to get along with the Americans. The exchange rate was (Deutsche) four marks to the dollar and quartermaster gasoline sold for 10 cents a gallon. The biggest bargains were champagne and cuckoo clocks. The U.S. was referred to as the “Big PX.” Long’s third war was, of course, Vietnam, where as an Armor colonel he commanded the 2nd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division at the Hau Nhia Province in South Vietnam.

“The challenges of Vietnam were fighting an enemy that lived among the populace and the fact that the American people, for the most part, demonstrated no support for the war and the soldiers doing the fighting,” Long said.

Enemy strength necessitated a strong presence, and Long was in charge of six combat battalions, four infantry, one mechanical infantry and a half-strength tank battalion.

“I earned my pay both day and night,” said Long, who received his third Combat Infantry Badge during this tour of duty.

Retiring in 1983 as a major general, Long entered a second career as military consultant to Educational Testing Service and other corporations. In 1997, he and his wife, Dottie, headed south to Indian River Colony Club.

Free time is rare for Long, who serves in many committees and organizations, including an informal group of Army officers whose goal is to outlaw Sharia Law in America.

“A group of nine veterans decided to get together and do something about the increasing application of Sharia Law in America,” said Long. “We have encouraged our representatives to prevent the application of other than American laws in American courts. We have made some progress.”

Inshore In the Banana and Indian River lagoons, watch for the glass minnow small bait schools. I recommend using a 3.5 inch Fishbelly Hawg Shad with a 1/4 ounce jig head scented with Bioedge shrimp scent to fish around these small bait attractors to catch sea trout, lady fish and redfish plus many other species. The snook and tarpon should remain active around the inlets mostly in the early morning or towards the evening. Be sure to get out early because the bite slows as the sun gets high around noon and try to avoid the afternoon lightning storms.

Offshore In the Atlantic Ocean along the Brevard coast, look for the kingfish to continue to bite. Also, you may find some cobia patrolling the surface looking for a quick snack or hanging around sea turtles.

These fish are called “Brown Bruisers” because they will bruise your tackle and sometimes your ego trying to catch them. Look for tarpon to stay strong along the Space Coast

in August as well.

Surf In August, anglers should see good catches of summer time flounder, whiting, Pompano, and mangrove snapper along the Brevard County beaches and Inlets. The top baits to use in the surf are live shrimp and cut clams. Another alternative would be to cast a small jig with an imitation shrimp to catch these fish.

SENIOR Still driving after all these years She goes where she wants, when she wants SENTIMENTS By angela Smith

Who do you get when you cross Betty White, without the sass, and anybody’s sweet little rocking chair grandma? According to Louise Senzanici, you get Anne Sandula of Palm Bay, an active senior who is a member of more than five local organizations.

“There isn’t a person who knows Anne that isn’t amazed at her energy and her compassion,” said long time friend, Senzanici, amazed because Sandula has lived through 10 decades of change; she has seen it all.

Born August 29, 1911, two years before the first world war, she is now celebrating her 100th birthday within the second decade of the 21st century.

Despite her advanced age, Sandula says it hasn’t slowed her down.

“I never thought I’d be this active at 100,” Sandula admitted. “But I was always active to begin with.”

Sandula spent a large portion of her life devoting herself to groups and charities throughout Connecticut with her late husband, Ed, of 55 years, who was a state senator for the Republican Party.

That energetic lifestyle led her to Eisenhower and Nixon’s presidential inaugurations, and leadership roles within the state’s sectional committee program where she hosted fundraising

events — even for former President George Bush’s grandmother.

“I did all these things,” Sandula said,” and I’ve enjoyed doing them.”

Eventually moving to south Florida in 1971 and to Palm Bay in 2000, she knew she couldn’t just sit still.

“I joined St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and I got involved,” Sandula said, “and I made many friends.”

Among her countless church roles, Sandula continues to volunteer at Palm Bay Community Hospital, and is a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxillary, the Red Hats and is also the treasurer of the local AARP, all roles her friend Lorraine Frechette says are the spitting image of Sandula’s4 #lifestyle.

Mosquitos, Alligators and Determination August performance The Brevard Theatrical Ensemble, Inc. presents Mosquitos, Alligators and Determination an original theatrical production about Florida history in story and song.

“Ponce de Leon discovered Florida in 1513, but he had found only the physical and material Florida. Then, more than 400 years later, came the discovery of the heart and spirit of Florida” said Lady Gail Ryan, of BTE. The lives and writings of these determined individuals have revealed to the world a truly inspirational group of humans. Some of these stories and tall tales will be in this year’s production of Mosquitos, Alligators and Determination with dancing.
