Medicaid decision impacts local seniors Choice of plans required for Medicaid seniors

Medicaid recipients in long-term care have an important choice to make by July 18, or they may have to live for a year with the choice made for them by state administrators.

The choice between four plans is being required because the Florida Medicaid program is in the process of implementing a new system through which Medicaid enrollees will receive long-term care (LTC) services, called the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-term Care Program.

Long-Term Care plans available for Brevard County include: American Elder Care, Coventry, Sunshine and United.

“This is a big transition for the state and for the participants as well. There has been a lot of planning but it’s finally here,’’ said Michelle Dahnke, communications director for the Agency for Healthcare Administration.

In Brevard County, part of Region 7, the July 18 choice between four plans will take effect Aug. 1. Other counties in Region 7 include Orange, Osceola and Seminole.

“We’ve made an effort to get out and talk about what that change means. Our goal is to help about 10,000 in Region 7 make the choice,’’ she said.

Even for those who fail to make a choice, and have a choice made for them, can change between the four plans for a period of 90 days, Dahnke said.

After 90 days, that choice is locked in for a year, but enrollees are able to “test out” all four plans if they make the changes during the 90 (day) periods, she said.

After the initial 12-month period, recipients can also change plans during an open enrollment period. Outside of the open enrollment period, recipients will only be able to change plans if there is an agency-approved ‘good cause’ reason.

Counselors are available to help but reciepients are “really encouraged to make an action plan’’ to make sure the transition goes smoothly, Dahnke said.

The new plan is required to continue existing services unabated for up to 60 days, or until the recipient receives a comprehensive assessment and a new plan of care is developed, she said.

In making the decision, recipents should ask themselves, or a counselor:

• What services do I think I need? Assisted living? Home health care?

• Which plan has the providers I currently use or think I will need?

• Are the providers I need part of the plan?

“It’s not just a random program. We look at the current provider. We don’t want anybody to have to move where they’re living because of the program,’’ Dahnke said.

As a boy, Ben Wadler used to hang out by the players’ entrance at the old Yankee Stadium.

That’s where he met none other than Babe Ruth.

We may remember our Sweet 16 as the start of the most exciting time of our lives: budding adulthood. Senior Life is celebrating its Sweet 16 and it is indeed an exciting time. We thank our readers for your input toward making this an award-winning newspaper and, of course, we thank our advertisers for making it possible to bring you entertaining, informative news. As I reflect on the Fourth of July this month, I’ve gained a new perspective on what the greatest generation endured so we could retain our American independence. The Space Coast Boomers feature on page 23 brings a new light to the feelings experienced by people who were able to escape Eastern European countries ahead of the nazis. Those who got out feel remorse for those who remained behind, guilt because they moved on with their lives without loved lost ones, and sadness at being unable to convince those left behind to leave when they could. Author Joanie Holzer Schirm revealed these feelings from the secret letters left behind by her father, Oswald Holzer, a wellknown doctor in the Indialantic area dating back to the early days of the space program.

On a lighter note, there are a number of amazing boomers and seniors featured this month, including a supersonic adventurer, a champion runner, a former world-ranked squash and tennis player, a north Brevard artist and an “educational entertainer” who is likely a favorite with our children and grandchildren What could be a lighter, more joyous topic than babies? The Brevard Zoo has them galore. It’s the best of times to spend the day and have grandchildren “educationally entertained” for an entire day. The days to enjoy them are waning, as Brevard children return to school next month and visiting grandchildren return north to schools typically the following month.

Her husband, Colin, is stationed at Patrick Air Force Base. They have two children, Rowena, 7, and Ethan, 4. It was her first time competing at Dancing with Brevard.

Coming in at second place was Tracy Ryland, co-owner of Beachside Physical Therapy. Ryland said she fell in love with ballroom dancing after taking lessons with her husband, Steve, in preparation for their wedding 16 years ago.

Her partner was Brad Stein, owner of Dancin’ Dance Studio in Indialantic. Stein was a soloist with the East Coast Dance Theatre and a featured performer on Broadway in the new York Times critically acclaimed “Ballroom Fever.”

Heather McDonough of Berman, Hopkins, Wright & LaHam CPAs grabbed the third-place honors, along with her dancing partner, Lance Sexton. McDonough spent her younger years competing in ballet, tap and jazz. She moved to Brevard County in 1999 with her husband Steve. Her son, Evan, is following in her footsteps in the field of finance at Stetson University, while her 9-yearold daughter, Erin, shares her love of performing dance.

Tim Perkins helps make science fun for children through his persona as Mr. Science.

If Tim Perkins, also known as Mr. Science, had his way, the United States would not have a shortage of scientists.

“Kids already are scientists until we teach them not to be,” said the baby boomer, who conducts week-long summer science camps, as well as camps throughout the year, at the David R. Schechter Community Center in Satellite Beach. “Every kid is a physicist through trial and error and the scientific process. They try and see if this works. They’re already using a crude version of the scientific method to experience the world around them.”

Mr. Science’s summer camps begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. If that sounds too long for children of elementary-school age, it would be wrong to jump to that conclusion.

“Four moms came in early on the first day to get their kids, and the kids didn’t want to leave,” Perkins said.

“That really says something. I know it’s a long day. On the first day, I get an idea of who’s drifting and fidgeting from the hazing on the first day.

They’re sitting for 20 to 30 minutes on hard seats and, from that, I can tell the nature of the group as a single unit and how everything sinks in. I can tell them something to get a laugh and to hit the reset button.”

Mr. Science has a few simple rules that are almost universally accepted.

“There’s no instruction manual,” said Perkins, who attended Melbourne High School and earned an associate’s degree in advertising from Brevard Community College. “Sometimes, we have to be politically incorrect. The village raises a child, and I have something to contribute. I’m no help at all if the kids aren’t going above and beyond. We need to raise leaders or we’re never going to go anywhere.''

Anyone with a love for trains should attend Trains, Trains, Trains!, an all-day program dedicated to train topics.

The seminar will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 28 at the Central Brevard Library on 308 Forrest Ave. in Cocoa.

Included in the program will be an elaborate, computer-driven model train on a 100-foot track that replicates the 351-mile railway from Jacksonville to Miami.

From 10 a.m. to noon, train fans can become an apprentice

engineer and watch train operators perform drop-offs and pickups at miniature depots which replicate actual train depots and operations.

From 2 to 3:30 p.m., fans can become engineers and operate a model Florida East Coast Railway. There will be an opportunity to pick up freight, stop at intersections or successfully complete a run.

“I don’t have my bachelor’s degree, and I know that frustrates people,” said Perkins, who is in his mid 50s but describes his age as “older than dirt but twice as smart.”

“I’ve done work for big corporations such as Burger King, Coca-Cola, Betty Crocker and all the grocery stores,” he said. “I’ve done radio, television and print media. I’ve even airbrushed T-shirts and surfboards. I’ve done murals and several at Kennedy Space Center.

Successsful advertising is an education process that can be abused or put to a good use. Mr. Science chooses the latter.

“I wrote radio spots and, in the process of writing, I realized there are two opposing groups competing for the real estate of a child’s mind,” Perkins said. “Advertisers sneak sugar products (for children) by using every psychological trick. At the same time, schools use a different paradigm through repetition and drumming things into your head. nike will try to put its logo into a kid’s head and make mom like it. Perkins’ wife, Melanie, is an accomplished musician. The two sometimes work together to mesh music and science.

“When we were thinking of different animals, she cut an album (“Animalop”). We’ll go to the children or they will come to us.”

During the school year, Mr. Science conducts an afterschool science seminar, home school programs, smart parties, camps for little geniuses (2 to 5 years old) and camps during spring and fall breaks from school. He also is available for birthday parties. Schools also come to him for field trips.

Conquering the inadequate self image or preventing one from developing is a challenge when it comes to children and complicated subject matter.

“We encourage failure — failure is absolutely OK,” Mr Science said. “not trying is what’s unacceptable. Fail and fail until you fail to fail.”

Even Mr. Science doesn't have all the answers.

“If a child asks a question, sometimes I don’t know,” Perkins said.

“I’ll say, ‘Let’s find out together.’

We’ll go see where we wind up and do it with enthusiasm. If the boys want to have robo wars and destroy some things, they’ll joke about flame throwing. I’ll tell them they need to get a fire permit. That might be more work than they want to do. If we go right at it, we’re going to do it safely.”

A look around his summer camp will reveal there are far more boys than girls.

“The girls that come in are really into science,” Perkins said. “They’re trying to find their own niche, and the boys are helpful. I love it when the girls beat the boys. That can be a tremendous social dynamic.” SL

It’s great to be back home here in Brevard after spending the past few months in Tallahassee for the 2013 Legislative Session. I wanted to take this opportunity to give you a brief update on what we accomplished.

We passed a $74 billion budget with strong bipartisan support that focuses on Florida’s families and includes no tax or fee increases. We increased funding to K-12 schools by $1.5 billion — which represents a $410.83 increase in per-student funds for Brevard County schools, strengthened the safety net for our most vulnerable citizens, gave law enforcement the tools it needs to keep families safe, and allocated over $600 million in funds to improve the health of water bodies and environmentally sensitive lands.

Our budget also addresses many important health services issues for Florida seniors. We increased funding for additional elder waiver slots in community-based care diversion programs and restored funding for Alzheimer’s respite care services.

While we funded critical priorities, we remained committed to fiscal responsibility by adding $2.8 billion to our reserves, so we are prepared for any potential future economic uncertainty.

In addition to the budget, the Legislature remained focused on improving Florida’s business climate to create jobs. To help Florida manufacturers better compete with other states, we eliminated the taxes they pay on machinery and equipment. We also increased Space Florida’s budget to assist their efforts at strengthening the commercial space industry in our state.

Further, we worked to strengthen our ethics, elections and campaign finance laws. We passed tough ethics reforms that address loopholes in the law and hold public officials to a higher standard. Our elections reform remedies the problems Florida faced during the 2012 Election by expanding the number of days, hours and locations that local elections supervisors can use for early voting. We also enacted campaign finance reforms that increase transparency by requiring more frequent reporting of campaign contributions and spending.

The Legislature also passed landmark Everglades restoration legislation that will bring the restoration process into its final phase. This legislation calls for $320 million in state funding for clean-up efforts over the next ten years to repair the health of this vital ecosystem.

On a personal note, I was humbled to be designated as the Speaker of the Florida House by my colleagues for the 2014-2016 legislative term. I am truly honored to have the opportunity to be the first House Speaker representing Brevard County.

Cedar Key, Florida

If you are looking for a laid-back seaside destination for a different type of vacation, the quaint city of Cedar Key is one of my top Florida selections.

This fishing village and art colony is located directly on the gulf in Levy County on the west coast of Florida.

At Cedar Key, you will turn the clock back more than 50 years and you can visualize how the present Key West was back then. The Cedar Keys national Wildlife Refuge area is a cluster of tiny islands on the gulf of Mexico located near the mainland of Florida.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of extravagant shopping malls, carbon-copy fast food establishments, and man-made expensive entertainment complexes, then the original Cedar Key is for you and your entire family to enjoy.

There is a lot to see and do here, with fishing and water activities a daily way of life.

Boat rentals, charters and gulf tours, kayak rentals, fishing off the many piers, on the beach or on a charter fishing boat are some of the activities you can enjoy.

Kayak paddling is an outstanding water activity that can be enjoyed daily to explore the Cedar Keys. In October 2013, the community will sponsor its annual kayak Paddling Extravaganza.

The purpose of these events is for you to explore by kayak the lower Suwannee River and delight in the many islands in the Cedar Keys Refuge.

One of your first stops here should be a visit to the Cedar Key Museum State Park. Located at 12231 SW 166th Ct.,

the museum displays items Touring collected by Saint the Town Clair Whitman, a local resident who established the first John museum in his Trieste home. His collection included such items as sea shells and Indian artifacts. The museum displays these as well as dioramas depicting life around Cedar Key and contains a large collection of related historical information. An important feature of the museum is the Saint Clair Whitman house, built in the 1880s and acquired by Whitman in the 1920s.

The house has been restored to depict life in the Cedar Key area circa 1920 to 1930.

It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Then take Turnpike north to I-75 north. Continue on I-75 north to Ocala, about 50 miles. At Ocala take Route 27 West 25 miles to the town of Bronson.

At Bronson, take Route 24 for about 25 miles to Cedar Key. It is a rural and enjoyable ride. SL

Deed restrictions protect homeowners and associations alike neighbor complaints probably generate the greatest number of phone calls from association residents to a property manager.

In most associations, these complaints fall under the category of deed restriction enforcement. Association documents usually spell out, in detail, how these types of situations are handled. Your property manager should meet with the board of directors, review the documents and establish a written enforcement policy.

Typically, this policy consists of the property manager or board member verifying that there actually is a violation. Often, a friendly personal visit will solve the problem and the issue is closed. Sometimes boards prefer to do the entire process in writing. Once the violation is confirmed, a friendly letter is sent to the offending neighbor explaining the nature of the problem. It is important that this first letter establish that this is a violation of your association documents and must be resolved within a certain time frame.

Most violations are resolved with the first letter. If this doesn’t work, a second letter is sent. This one should be sent certified, return receipt requested. It

Julie and Larry Maschhoff walked the gritty, hot streets of Haiti last month hand-in-hand with their 9-year-old granddaughter Emerson â&#x20AC;&#x153;Emmieâ&#x20AC;? Ann. Only one thing displayed more shock and awe than Emmieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expression: the faces of the orphaned children who had never in their lives seen a blue-eyed blonde child. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got a little bit scared,â&#x20AC;? Emmie said.

Her grandparents, father and aunt quelled the crowd of tiny onlookers pressing forward in hope of touching her skin and hair, or catching a closer glimpse of her brightly colored toenails, a luxury unfathomable to them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They definitely donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the same need for personal space as we do,â&#x20AC;? Julie Maschhoff said.

The Maschhoff family went to Haiti on a mission trip to strengthen Potterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hands orphanage in Pilate. The town is a site of perpetual recovery from poverty as well as cyclones, hurricanes, tropical storms, torrential rains, floods and earthquakes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have raised our children to be mission minded and help others when possible,â&#x20AC;? Maschhoff said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;now they have done the same for their children.â&#x20AC;? Added Larry Maschhoff, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We could not be more pleased.â&#x20AC;?

Adventurerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legacy is instruction for the world By linda WiGGinS

You may recall his photo on these pages from an October 2011 Veterans Salute: Larry Sietsma, literally on top of the world â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the north Pole, that is â&#x20AC;&#x201D; followed by a trip to the South Pole as well. now, a book has been written about the never-say-no adventurer by his little sister, Dolly Rice, whom she says figuratively and literally saved her life. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was going down the wrong track, and if it hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been for his positive influence, his strong example, his showing me the way with love, I can tell you it would not have been pretty,â&#x20AC;? Rice said of her partying ways that nearly became her parting ways.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Two + Two = Five: A Measure of This Man,â&#x20AC;? will be the topic of a 2 p.m.

Saturday, July 20 discussion at the Central Brevard Public Library, 308 Forrest Ave. in Cocoa. Dolly Rice and Larry Sietsma will jump off the pages in person at the event.

The book details, with a little sisterly awe, Sietsmaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1992 trip around the world in the iconic Concorde Supersonic Jet in one month. With 12 legs to the journey, he and wife Sherry stayed three or four days in each exotic location.

His need for speed was again satisfied in 2006, when he flew at twice the speed of sound in an F-104 Starfighter.

In addition to his yellow paper, his Bucket List was also â&#x20AC;&#x153;written in energetic ambitions tucked away on those lined, yellow pages of his heart,â&#x20AC;? Rice writes.

Sietsma rode his bike up the secondtallest pass in the world, Independence Pass in the Colorado Rockies, elevation 12,095 feet. He lifted his bike aloft for a victory photo and found the ride down an even more strenuous task, trying to stay on the mountain at what mere mortals would consider break-neck speed. At the end of the day, he found himself wondering about the firsthighest passâ&#x20AC;Ś. So he did that next, the Cottonwood Pass at 12,126 feet.

These accounts just scratch the surface of Sietsmaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s accomplishments, but none of them are the reason Rice wrote the book, she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to share with the world Larryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ever positive, find-a-way-to-do attitude, and his philosophy: always do the right thing, and then you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to look over your shoulder or worry about the consequences of your actions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatever happens, you just keep moving forward,â&#x20AC;? Rice said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to leave this as instructions for the next generation, and the next, and the next â&#x20AC;Ś.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very easy to be happy but it takes a lot of work to be miserable. At this age, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll go for easy every time.

Let me demonstrate. Unhappy people will spend hours watching a channel on TV such as a news channel that they hate. After a couple of hours, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re so enraged that they feel they have to tell the world how horrible the channel is. They get on every social media device they can find and spend a couple more hours telling the world how terrible that channel is. If people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t agree with them, they get more angry and outraged until theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re at the point that they have to take a drink or medicate themselves to calm down.

Happy people just change the channel.

Unhappy people shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t shop.

They go to the store, see the price increases, complain loudly to whoever will listen, then get in line and continue their angry babblings, trying to make sure everyone around them is just as upset as they are. If the others

in line donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t respond, they get even more outraged, causing them to go home and either take a drink or medicate themselves to calm down.

Happy people use shopping as a social occasion and a chance to catch up with old friends, while spending a small portion of their kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inheritance.

Unhappy people use the highway as a nASCAR event, making sure nobody passes them, constantly exercising their middle fingers, and yelling at other drivers until their neck veins look like theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll explode. When they get home, they have to take a drink or medicate themselves to calm down.

United Order True Sisters are foes of cancer

To the women â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and men â&#x20AC;&#x201D; who receive their life-saving help, the United Order True Sisters are indeed faithful friends.

Chapter 66, the Brevard chapter of this national organization, focuses on funding mammograms for women and PSA tests for men who cannot afford these critically important procedures.

Last year, the group provided 430 free mammograms to Brevard women who had no health insurance coverage to pay for this test. The focus of the Space Coast unit dovetails the mother organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission to help needy cancer patients When the United Order True Sisters, the oldest womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s charitable group in the country, was chartered in 1846, the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s organizers couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even legally launch their own organization. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Men had to sign the charter document because at that time womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s signatures did not have legal binding,â&#x20AC;? said local president Sylvia Shapiro.

The concept of a sisterhood was revolutionary at a time when a womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life centered on home and church. The group, founded as a secret society in order to spare humiliation for the indigent recipients of its charitable projects, originally helped immigrants to settle into a new life and culture in America. During the SpanishAmerican War and World War I, the

True Sisters did their part by rolling bandages for the fighting men.

The Brevard chapter is one of only a half dozen in Florida. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Each works autonomously and has different projects of its own,â&#x20AC;? Shapiro said.

To raise funds for the mammograms, the True Sisters not only organize fundraisers such as craft sales, but also get creative with resources at hand. A call out to members to search for the once ubiquitous Sperry & Hutchinson green Stamps brought such an overwhelming response that chapter members were able to cash the stamps for several thousands of dollars that, in turn, went directly to fund mammos.

Once a True Sister, members usually remain True Sisters for life. Shapiro, for example, joined in 1975 after a friend invited the Indian Harbour Beach resident. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some of the members are thirdand fourth-generation members,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mothers, daughters and grandmothers belong, as do the husbands, because men are allowed in the group.â&#x20AC;?

SpaceCoast boomers Secret letters reveal lost lives, loves By linda WiGGinS

Space age settlers in Brevard with health needs likely went to Dr. Oswald Holzer of Indialantic, a family doctor who delivered up to 200 babies a year and treated them until he retired from his Melbourne practice in 1974. He volunteered another decade longer, providing free health care to students at Florida Institute of Technology. gregarious and easy to like, none of his patients knew that he harbored a dark secret. Were it not for his daughter, Joanie Holzer Schirm, his secret would have gone with him to the grave.

His heart-breaking sin? He survived, while his parents, his greatgrandmother and 41 aunts, uncles and other close family members died in gas chambers and from torture and starvation in concentration camps. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Adventurers Against Their Willâ&#x20AC;? is Schirmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new nonfiction book based on a box of letters she found after her fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death. Her parents died in 2000 just two days apart, ending what Schirm called â&#x20AC;&#x153;a 60-year love affair.â&#x20AC;?

Letters were written to and from Holzer just before World War II, and after he was able to escape Czechoslovakia to China, which opened the door to 20,000 Jews at a time when others closed their borders to them. He met his wife there, the daughter of Christian missionaries.

the process giving many of them closure on loved ones who simply were never heard from again. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were writing to my father about whether they should stay or go and asking other advice of him because he was able to get away,â&#x20AC;? Schirm said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The fact that they had no idea of what unthinkable future awaited them was gut-wrenching and almost impossible to read.â&#x20AC;?

The catharsis actually started in 1993 with the release of the movie â&#x20AC;&#x153;Schindlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s List.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what I was thinking, asking him if he wanted to go see it with me. I mean, I knew a little bit of his background so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m thinking he might find it interesting, not realizing it would bring back horror.â&#x20AC;?

Afterward, Holzer began making a list of his own, realizing the losses to him tallied 44. Schirm began to record his stories on tape for posterity, not realizing they would one day lead to historical importance as her research unlocked so many puzzles of what happened to survivors, those who perished, and even some of the nazi leaders at whose hands they died.

Mahoney family keeps fit physically, mentally with varied routine

At least once a week, Matt Mahoney and his wife Joan hop aboard their tandem bicycle for a 50-mile ride. neither has to do the bulk of the work during their fun time together.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;It takes us about four hours to do,â&#x20AC;? said the 57-year-old Matt Mahoney, who finished fifth in the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s division of the Runner of the Year 20122013 series sponsored by Space Coast Runners. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we get to the golden Corral, we'll stop and eat.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about three miles from home.

We feel refreshed and, after we eat, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re rested up.â&#x20AC;?

Mahoney, who works from home over the Internet writing data compression software for Dell, has figured out what works for him in his physical regimen.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I do a variety of things,â&#x20AC;?

Mahoney said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If something gets stale, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll do something else. I like what I do in biking or running.â&#x20AC;?

Two years ago, he ran his personal best in the marathon with a time of 3 hours, 15 minutes for the 26.2-mile distance. It was something of a surprise since his personal best for the 5K distance (3.1 miles) is 18 minutes, 40 seconds and that was posted approximately 20 years ago. now, he runs a 5K race in the 20- to 21-minute range. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re older, we get better at the long distances,â&#x20AC;? said Mahoney, who grew up in new Jersey and Massachusetts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like racing every weekend and the social aspect of seeing all the other runners. I know a lot of people.â&#x20AC;?

After a stint in the navy, Mahoney enrolled at Cape Cod Community College in 1980.

While working for Harris, he earned a masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree from Florida Institute ofTechnology and later quit his job to concentrate on his doctorate.

He earned his Ph.D from Florida Tech in 2003 and taught at the school for several years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t run until I moved to Florida,â&#x20AC;? Mahoney said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had a roomate who was into running and he talked me into doing a 5K. Then, I was hooked on it. That was 1985.â&#x20AC;?

Like most runners, Mahoney has had a few injuries through the years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Injuries are caused by overdoing it,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to do the high miles to get the most out of a workout.â&#x20AC;?

Mahoney runs approximately 20 miles a week, which seems low for an experienced runner. He compensates for that by doing interval workouts, where he will run several sprints of 30 seconds to 2 minutes on the grass. He also runs barefoot during these workouts. Another workout will be an eight- to 10mile run at an easy pace, and a third workout could be an actual race or another long run.

When he's not running, Mahoney will lift weights, ride his bike or the tandem bike with his wife.

Mahoney admits the barefoot runs might be controversial for some runners and not something for everyone.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;As children, that's how you run,'' he said. "Running shoes have high heels and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like to run in them. I mostly run in racing flats.â&#x20AC;?

In Mahoneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opinion, running shoes are designed for landing on your heal. Thus, the shoes have added cushion for the heal. Children land on their mid-foot or the ball of their feet while running, and that's what Mahoney tries to do. Forefoot running lessens the impact running will have on the knees and hips and transfers it to the calf muscles. Mahoney recommends that beginning runners set aside a year to gradually build strength in their calf muscles and Achillesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tendons to avoid nagging injuries.

The flexibility of working from home allows Mahoney to adhere to a diet that might not be possible for those who make a daily commute to a city. He eats a large breakfast and lunch.

Dinner often is skipped or it could consist of a few nuts and low carbohydrates. He doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t drink or smoke, and he rarely drinks soda or coffee. He only eats meat a couple of times a week, but he emphasizes that protein is necessary to recover from hard workouts.

Patience canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be overemphasized. Mahoney recommends walking 20 to 30 minutes a day before progressing to a running routine.

Runner continued from page 24 with his wife. Joan Mahoney has a Ph.D. in psychology and taught at Brevard Community College for several years before retiring. She has bicycled the perimeters of 24 countries, including Australia twice in 1979 and 1991. Each of those rides was 9,600 miles. She also has completed the Hawaii Ironman (2.4mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2mile run) three times.

At age 75, she holds the world record for most perimeter miles (more than 100,000) and most countries (24). A perimeter ride is any ride of 50 miles or longer around the boundary of some region, whether it be a country, city, county or lake. She now spends a lot of her time working out on her indoor rowing machine, where she has rowed more than 33 million meters. SL

Dear Medicaid Confused: I’ll start with a little background to set the stage: Florida is implementing a new system for Medicaid enrollees to receive their long-term care services. It is called the Long-term Care (LTC) program. The LTC program will be phased in around the state through the beginning of 2014. The LTC program will provide nursing facility services and long-term community based care services like therapies, personal care and home-delivered meals, for example. The LTC program does not provide medical or prescription drug coverage, so those will still be provided by Medicare and any supplemental prescription coverage you may have.

It sounds like you are in Long-term Care (LTC) Region 7 (which includes Brevard, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties), which is why you were encouraged to choose an LTC plan before July 18. I am glad you chose a plan before the deadline for your region. I’m not sure how you arrived at your decision, but there are resources available to help you determine which LTC plan may be best for you if you want to learn more.

There are three ways to get information and to enroll in the LTC plan of your choice. You can call 1-877-711-3662 and speak with a choice counselor from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday or visit the website flmedicaidmanagedcare.com anytime to compare plans. From the call center or the website, you can also submit a request to meet with a choice counselor face-to-face. next, I’ll address the question about changing your plan. If you find the LTC plan you’ve chosen is not a good fit for your needs or does not have the providers you want to use, you can change plans anytime in the first 90 days after enrollment. After the 90-day period, you are locked into that plan until the open enrollment period in the following year unless you have a good reason for changing sooner.

All-around athletic ability pushes Lilley to heal from injuries

Life changed for Murray Lilley in november, but not as much as it could have.

Lilley, the general manager of the Kiwi Tennis Club in Indian Harbour Beach, hit a rock while cycling on the Pineda Causeway. He broke five ribs and sustained a hemothorax, where blood spilled into the pleural space. He also injured his shoulder, which still hampers him and likely will require surgery. Lilley spent five days in the hospital.

“I had just gone about four miles in the semi-light of the morning. It was supposed to be a 60-mile ride,” the 66year-old Lilley said. “I started riding again in January, but just slowly. not being able to do anything was driving me crazy.”

Lilley also is back on the court teaching tennis to players of all ages.

For someone who has played tennis since the age of 4, he’s too much of a perfectionist to be happy with his effort due to the injured shoulder.

“It’s bad — I’m on the court, but I can’t hit the ball,” Lilley said. “The vibration of sticking the ball hurts too much. But, it's forced me to get down there on the court with them, and they might get more out of the lesson.”

Extensive physical therapy with his old friend Marc Ledene, another tennis player and a physical therapist, has helped, but sometimes surgery is inevitable.

“I’m pretty stubborn and I’ve tried to avoid surgery,” said Lilley, who grew up in new Zealand and was one of the top tennis players in his country before becoming an international squash player at the age of 18. “I’ve done the physiotherapy exercises with the rubber bands and the pulleys. Most likely, the bone spurs have cut into the ligament. If the bone spurs are shaved off, I could be back playing in a month.”

Ten years ago, Lilley underwent a hip replacement procedure which did not slow him down on the tennis court.

The shoulder also likely will heal.

“I’ve done a lot of exercise in my life and I suppose my body will break down eventually,” Lilley said. “My recommendation is to keep yourself in shape aerobically. You need to do an hour a day of exercise at least.

Stretching is important, but I’m lazy at it. You have to put the time aside.”

Besides tennis, the native of new Plymouth, new Zealand also starred as a halfback in rugby as a youth. At 18, he made a life-changing decision to become a professional squash player.

He worked his way up to no. 8 in the world.

“Being fit, squash is not as technical a sport as tennis,” Lilley said.

“Physically, it's a lot harder than tennis.”

Wanting to stay active in sports, as well as make a living as an athlete or as a coach, Lilley started coaching squash in Canada. He moved to Canada in 1980 and spent two years in Toronto and 10 years in Calgary before moving to Indian Harbour Beach in 1992. “new Zealand is a nice place, but they’re too cheap when it comes to sports,” Lilley said. “It’s very difficult to make a living in sports.''

While in Calgary, Lilley also was a part of new Zealand’s effort to form a bobsled team for the World Championships and the Olympics.

“We were doing it about the same time as the Jamaicans, and we were better than the Jamaicans,” Lilley said.

“I was in the second spot on the fourman team. When you hit the first

corner, it’s scary and you have to brace yourself. We were, I think, 23rd out of 34 teams (in the World Championships).”

Lilley’s wife, Karin, plays a lot of recreational tennis at the Kiwi Club, which has been open since 2001.

Murray Lilley was the key advisor for a wealthy friend who built the club. nigel Lilley and Christine Lilley, the couple’s children, were standout athletes at Satellite High, where they played multiple sports. nigel later swam for Florida Atlantic University and Christine played soccer for the same school. Both now live in Canada, where nigel works in sales and construction in Edmonton and still swims competitively. Christine, who lives in Calgary, is an engineer and she still plays soccer.

“Cardiology is one of the most important things in your life,” Murray Lilley said. “It’s your body. You can’t look after your wife and kids if you don't have your health.” SL

Where there’s Love, there’s a way By linda WiGGinS

Betty Peterkin’s house ― some would say ― was beyond repair. She certainly could not afford to tear down and rebuild it, but her living conditions were such that a nonprofit partnership of two groups felt it was undignified for human habitation.

The groups combined forces to totally refurbish the Tucker Street home, one working outside and one working within.

“It was a dream come true,” Peterkin said.

The nonprofit Love InC for the first time partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Brevard to repair and rehabilitate homes for low-income families.

“It broke our heart to find Betty living in such a situation and to not be able to help her,” said Suntree area resident Dan Walker, executive director of Love InC, which stands for Love In the name of Christ. A grant program with the city of Melbourne could not meet the cost, so the Melbourne home was taken off the consideration list.

“If your roof is leaking and the electric is sparking, it is hard to live in that home, so our mission is to restore dignity to that home and to that family.”

The massive nonprofit Habitat, better know as a new-home builder, acted as general contractor, refurbishing the inside of the home, while Love InC did outside repairs.

“The scope of the work was more than Mrs. Peterkin applied for and was a larger job than Love InC was able to handle so we combined forces,” said Joe gassman, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Brevard.

Peterkin’s project fit into Habitat’s new Critical Home Repair Program, which focuses on low-income homeowners who cannot afford major repairs such as a roof, plumbing, weatherization and accessibility needs.

“When we got into the project, we found that we needed to replace walls that had dry rotted, bathrooms that had mildew, a roof that had dry rotted and electrical wiring that was outdated,” said Tracey Parrish, Habitat Critical Home Repair supervisor and coordinator.

Housing Finance Authority, joined together for a June 7 dedication of Peterkin’s home, and to recognize the many volunteers who brought the home back to life.

In addition to raising funds for rehabs, both organizations are accessing all available grants to be able to do more. Many families to be served live in neighborhoods that have become gentrified as once vibrant residents become elderly and infirm. For others, it is the only affordable place to live.

In 2012, more than 1,300 Love InC volunteers from 50 member churches rebuilt homes, repaired cars, provided donated furniture and personal care items and loved people through difficult times, according to the loveinc.com website. It is one of 157 affiliates across the country. Local operations include two thrift stores that are sponsored by churches.

Walker, gassman, Peterkin and others will appear at a 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 fundraising dinner to replenish costs for the Peterkin home and provide funds for future projects like it. The cost is $8 a person and $25 for families.

“We wanted everyone to be able to attend, rather than charging $50 to $100 per person,” Walker said. “Of course, we hope the people who have the means to invest in our community members in need will be inspired to give more.”

Gary Marchesano invites everyone to the Hang Ups Art Gallery in Titusville to discuss art or just to say hello.

When gary Marchesano recently held the grand opening for the Hang Ups Art gallery in Titusville, he was hoping for 20 to 30 guests and had prepared food and drink for up to 50.

Instead, nearly 70 people showed up. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were floored by the turnout,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is but another example of the warm and enthusiastic welcome we have received from the community.â&#x20AC;?

Marchesano acknowledged the support of his wife, Kimberly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Her patience, support and encouragement kept me going when I felt overwhelmed by the process of starting a business,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The storefront took a lot of time, sweat and money to turn it into a gallery and I did most of the grunt work (construction) myself.â&#x20AC;?

The couple relocated from Carson City, nev., in September 2012.

However, both have family members locally and had become familiar with the area during visits.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We soon came to love the Space Coast for many reasons,â&#x20AC;? he said.

He spoke of the diversity in his art. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I work in oils, pastels, photography, acrylics, paper machĂŠ and wire. I fit the media to the concept; whatever I think will best communicate the message,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Local artist Rita Burton also displays her work at the gallery. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rita is energetic about promoting the arts, passionate about her craft and extremely talented,â&#x20AC;? Marchesano said.

Although Burton described her work as, â&#x20AC;&#x153;sometimes a cross between impressionism and expressionism,â&#x20AC;? she said it is hard to judge. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is an accumulation of the influence of many artists through years of study.â&#x20AC;?

Another local artist, Tim Kennedy, displays his etched glass at the gallery.

The Special Needs Registry is a confidential listing of those people who meet program criteria, and is updated on an annual basis. Patients with colostomy assistance needs, nebulizers, oxygen, fe feeding tubes, or Alzheimer’s disease are examples of medical criteria that are eligible fo for the registry.
