Politicians may love to kiss babies, but they bend over backward for those babies’ grandparents. In Florida, and especially in Brevard, a high percentage of seniors wield power with legislators. It’s not just age, but several common factors among the older

They register to vote in the largest numbers, they show up on election day―or mail in absentee ballots―in the greatest numbers, they educate themselves on the issues, they take action on issues that affect them, they have the time

to attend and be vocal at public meetings, according to a sampling of office-holders. “Seniors in Brevard County are very active in our community and bring experience to issues that affect the citizens of our community,” said Brevard County

Wood is way of life for melbourne Beach artist By george white

Wood carver Judith Copeland of melbourne Beach knew she wanted to be an artist from an early age but she didn’t know what form that art would take. “I used to draw and paint when I was little so I knew I would study fine arts in college. I went to Florida A&m and that’s where I discovered sculp-

ture and working in wood, she said. “Working in wood to create sculpture is different than stone in many ways, some of which has to do with the variety of beautiful hardwoods native to Florida, she said. Copeland herself comes from the Sunshine State, spending her childhood in Sarasota and living in Tallahassee for many years.

Judith Copeland’s wood carvings were on exhibit at the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery during the month of May, 2012.

Some of her favorite woods to work with include black walnut, cherry, orange, grapefruit, avocado and sea grape. one of the most rare woods she’s worked with, with approval from environmental officials, was buttonwood mangrove. “I’ve tried working in marble and bronze but I felt like using wood. It’s a once-living object and I just really like the slow process of it. Now I carve all of it with mallet and chisels, she said. As for the shapes, Copeland said she goes into each project with a visual concept of what will come out the other side, rather than starting to carve without specific plans. “Usually I have ideas that I’m waiting to carve. I just look at the wood and the grain to

see if can be done, she said. Copeland said her pieces earlier in her career were much bigger, but she’s taking a slightly different approach now, creating much smaller pieces that are easier for her to handle. She lives and works in melbourne Beach and enjoys displaying her work, including her most recent show “Into The Woods at the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery, 1470 highland Ave., melbourne. “I wish I was making more money at it but mostly I just want to do what I want to do, she said. one of the first things I learned, writing for Senior Life, is that people adjust to their lifechanging events. many do so with grace and poise. Like so many others before me, I find I must modify my career plan. Through the publisher’s generosity and understanding, I will continue to edit remotely — from South Carolina – but I will no longer be the office manager. You see, I am going to be my mother’s hANC. I’m going to become her housekeeper, Activities director, Nutritionist and Companion. She’s reached that critical point in her life where she needs more help in her home and I am fortunate that I can provide it and still remain connected to you through technology. Although I won’t be in the office, this isn’t a farewell. It’s just one more adjustment to our aging society.

There are very few groups in Brevard County that can claim 50 years of continuous service, but the melbourne Beach Community Club can. The 22-member group celebrated the April 22 birthday with a catered lunch, according to club president Pat Klein of melbourne. “We used to meet every week and our membership went way up in the 1960s when it was called the melbourne Beach homemakers extension Club. We included members from the mainland all the way down to malabar,’’ she said. In 1991, the name was changed to the melbourne Beach Family and Community education Club and the group became part of the Brevard County and Florida State Cooperative extension services and had county and state representation. Council meetings, then, were educational meetings which covered many subjects, with each club within the council hosting a meeting. “our motto was teach what you know and learn what you don’t know,’’ Klein said. senior life George White Cultural arts was a big part of the council, which Pat Klein, president of Melbourne Beach Community Club, prepares held an annual Cultural Arts Showcase held in various dishes for the organization’s 50th anniversary in April. locations. From KP to ski patrol to engineer, rosenfield closes curtain on Korea with final bridge blast By maria sonnenberg

how does a Jewish boy from Boston, a fellow who had never put on a pair of skis, become a member of the famed 10th mountain Division, a fearless group of soldiers who skied around death during World War II? Necessity, as they say, is the mother of invention. In the case of Army maj. George rosenfield, necessity was the mom of skiing skills. rosenfield’s father had served in the russian Army. For Jews in Czarist russia, fighting for the Czar could make the difference whether or not your family was targeted in the next pogrom for extermination. After the war, rosenfield continued his dream of a forestry career, but while the GI Bill helped with the costs, it wasn’t enough. “I needed the money, so I joined Advanced roTC,” he said. In 1949, with a degree from the University of massachusetts and a commission as second lieutenant, rosenfield embarked on the rest of his life, which included service as a cartographer for the military and as a photogrammetrist for rCA rockets at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The rosenfield Stripe on the barrel on rockets was one of his contributions to missile tracking. The forestry degree was helpful, but not the way he had originally imagined. “I figured I would be counting trees and measuring crown diameter, but that didn’t turn out to be the case,” said rosenfield. Because he had been in combat during World War II, the Army tapped him to help as a combat engineer in Korea. These were the soldiers who built bridges―and then blew them up once they were no longer needed. You could say rosenfield was the guy who turned off the light on the Korean conflict, for he was the last Allied officer to leave the North Korean capital of Pyongyang after blowing up the last bridge. Health First co-sponsors 11th Annual Men’s Health Summit Special to Senior life

Several local healthcare providers are teaming up to provide FREE prostate cancer screening tests at the 11th Annual Men’s Health Summit on Saturday, June 9, from 9 am to noon at the Health Sciences Building, Building 20, on the Brevard Community College (BCC) campus at 1519 Clearlake Road in Cocoa. The event is co-sponsored by Health First, the Central Brevard Branch of the NAACP, Parrish Medical Center, Wuesthoff Health System, and Brevard Community College. The event includes free PSA blood tests and digital rectal exams, which will be provided along with other health screenings and information. According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. Additionally, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer— though statistics cite a low number of deaths when the disease is detected

early. Those at higher risk are recommended to get annual prostate cancer exams, and include: · Men over age 50 who have never had a PSA blood test and digital rectal exam · Men age 40 or older who have had a close relative (father, brother, or son) diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65 · African-American men *Those currently under the care of a physician for prostate cancer, or who have had surgery to remove the prostate, should not have the PSA blood test or digital rectal exam at this event. Instead, they are encouraged to bring a friend or family member who has not been tested before. The Men’s Health Summit is open to all residents of Brevard County. Screenings are FREE and performed on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call 321-434-4335. SL

OUR

columnists Examine Eau Gallie

This month, let’s take a walking tour of the historic district of Eau Gallie and you’ll be introduced to one of the fastest revitalized communities in Brevard. Start by visiting the Eau Gallie library located on Highland Avenue, just north of Eau Gallie Boulevard. This wellequipped library, with free computer use for the library-card wielding public, enjoys a fantastic view of the Indian River Lagoon. Behind the library, enjoy the newly built Eau Gallie pier. On one side of the library is the accommodating Pineapple Park, a haven for all ages, and on the other side is the very popular restaurant Squid Lips. This interesting restaurant is located on the lagoon and it is well worth going in and viewing the interior. Go north on Pineapple and view many restored homes on both sides of the street. At Pineapple Avenue and Law Street is the very attractive restored lodging, the Pineapple Bed and Breakfast. Walk one block west on Law, and at the corner of Highland, are four very interesting buildings. Three of the onestory buildings have been completely restored. All three buildings were built originally in the early 20th century. The three-story brick building on the southeast side of the avenue was built by the Gleason family in the early 20th century. It is now an apartment house and is up for sale.

Now walk north on Highland and view the Touring many restored the Town buildings and churches, all from the 19th and early 20th John centuries. Don’t miss Trieste the Old Eau Gallie Post Office building and the adjacent area. Other highlights on Highland are the Advent Christian Church, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1926 Ginter Building, Karrick Building (now a florist), the outstanding home of the Winchester Symphony Orchestra, Civic Center, and the newly built park on the corner of Highland and Eau Gallie. For eats, try Sweetie Pie Bakery, Concepts on Highland, and the brand new Live Oaks Bistro. The Renee Foosaner Education Center and the Foosaner Art Museum have now merged with the Florida Institute of Technology. This fine museum houses works of international, national and local artists and rotates exhibits on a regular basis. Go north on Highland and between Eau Gallie and Montreal you have a variety of excellent shops and restaurants, including Ace hardware, Mathers Bakery, Ralphs Art Supply, The Horn Section and Global Tours & Travel, among others. Crossing Montreal on Highland, visit the historic Rossetter House Museum and the Roush House; both are on the National Register of Historic Places. There is much more to do and see in Historic Eau Gallie. SL

Folly As people age, they become more prudent and reflect on the follies in life. People who live a long life are able to use a philosophical approach with their own balanced life and reflect on the years that have gone by. In old age, the famous Spanish artist Francisco Goya saw the folly of clinging to one’s lost youth. He expressed himself in timeless artworks covering all kinds of disorder and behaviors. Men and women accept the challenges of folly in different ways. Women have become aware of dangers and take action to prevent or protect. Men tend to deal with lack of foresight by using physical effort. Women tend to cope more in a spiritual way by praying and developing a plan of action. Then there are all kinds of creams, medical procedures, pills, and health regiments that promote a long life for men and women. Is this more folly? People who have lived a long life have seen the results of folly. In their personal journey, they have experienced the results of the lack of good sense, foolish acts, and even evil in their life and that of others. In money matters, marriage, parenting, personal struggles, illness and injury, they have built on their experience base to live a better life. Further, they share their wisdom with their children and grandchildren.

On the world scene, they have Challenges seen war and of Living to cruelty (man’s Age 100 inhumanity to man), miseries and Ed natural disasters, rebellion and riots, Baranowski scams and corruption, along with religious and political battles. Whether they have had first-hand experiences or learned about them from the newspaper or television, they grow in wisdom or extend the folly. There is the end game. What legacy do I leave? What form of wealth do I share and with whom? Do I give with a warm hand? Do I wait until I head to my heavenly reward? Do I leave a financial and legal mess for the family? For the most part, people who live a long life tend to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. They have experienced success and failure. They looked for the lessons. They see opportunities or defeat as choices, but look for creative ways to benefit from the conditions they face. They connect with the old adage, “If it is to be; it’s up to me.” Baranowski is president of Topics Unlimited, a Melbourne-based education, seminar and consulting company. He can be reached at topicsed@aol.com. SL

Libraries are not just for borrowing books ent things to offer. They do not each offer all the same opportunities but the classes they teach, Lucy movies they show, Kline seminars they host and programs they present vary. What prompted me to write about this was discovering something the Suntree/Viera Library has that I’ve not seen anyplace else. As an avid reader, I subscribe to four national publications, but how long can you keep magazines, with articles that are not dated and are always of interest, piling up at home? I was trying to find a place to donate them. Suntree/Viera Library has a table inside the entry where people may leave magazines. They are there for the taking, giving, keeping or returning, but they are not going to waste. How wonderful! I’ve recently left a year’s worth of three different publications for others to read, enjoy and share. Others will follow. Comments always welcome at asklucy3@juno.com. SL

Growing up in New York City, most elementary school children had to go to the library to borrow books to learn about things given as school assignments. Over the years, as my family’s library of books grew, I didn’t have to go to the library very often. By the time I married and inherited my parents’ library, my four children rarely visited the public library. They were surrounded by books, mostly history or classics. When we heard of a new book we wanted to read, we usually purchased one for ourselves rather than borrowing. If that’s all libraries were for, we’d never see much of them. Over the years, libraries changed and offered more than just books. For years, I’ve borrowed VHS tapes or movies on DVD and attended some programs my local library offers. I checked the phone book to discover Brevard County has 17 different libraries: each of these public places that we all can use have differ-

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Festival By linda Wiggins

The sixth annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Festival will be on June 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Melbourne Auditorium, 625 East Hibiscus Blvd., Melbourne. The free event is sponsored by Aging Matters in Brevard, formerly Community Services Council, and Florida Department of Children & Families Adult Protective Services. “There are many faces of domestic violence which includes elder abuse,” said Cindy Flachmeier, MSW, executive director of Aging Matters in Brevard. Flachmeier was a longtime director of domestic violence services with the Salvation Army. “No one wants to picture grandma being physically harmed by grandpa, or a daughter physically or mentally harming her mom. However, it happens and we cannot pretend that it doesn’t occur.” More than 40 local providers will provide information about aging in place. Resources for seniors their

families and caregivers; law enforcement and public safety; community senior services; elder abuse awareness and education, and more. June 15 has been designated World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and is being promoted all over the world. The day was conceived by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, with the goal “to increase society’s ability, through international collaboration, to recognize and respond to the mistreatment of older people in whatever setting it occurs, so that each individual can achieve an optimal quality of life in keeping with his or her cultural values and traditions.” Approximately 11,000 people a day are turning 65. For the first time in our nation’s history, there are more people over 65 than under 18. “It is important that we use the word domestic violence with elder abuse,” Flachmeier said. “We must not sugar coat a behavior that easily can become lethal or emotionally devastating to any human being at any age.” For more information, call 321-631-2746. Ex-pro basketball player Bird finds new career at Florida Air Academy By george WHite

You would think that 33 years as guidance counselor at Florida Air Academy in Melbourne would be interesting enough, but just that’s where Reggie Bird ended up, and happily so. Originally from Boston, Bird was a talented basketball player, at 6’ 2’’ playing guard and making a living out of shooting from outside. He ended up being drafted into the NBA by the Atlanta Hawks in 1972 and later played in European leagues. Once his athletic career had run its course, Bird started looking to move out of the Boston area. “I was looking for a change and a friend of my wife’s was at Patrick Air Force Base. We moved down in 1979 just in time for Hurricane David,’’ he said. Bird stopped by Florida Air Academy, more or less on a whim. “They called me up to teach history and do a little coaching. As time went on, I really came to love this place. I really do. The philosophy is progressive but the education is traditional. And it‘s a terrific bunch of kids,’’ he said.

Helping the 160 boarding students and 100 day students ages 11 to 18, especially those coming in from overseas, as well as other typical high school concerns, fill Bird’s days. “I’m a student advocate. Every day is different and I like that about it. It really runs the gamut. For the boarding students, I think it develops their independence a little earlier,’’ he said. The key to being a good counselor is to be able to give good suggestions without making it a negative experience, according to Bird. “I just try to advise them as much as I can without lecturing them,’’ he said. Bird survived a heart attack in 2006 and he said the experience has made him appreciate life, and his job, all the more. Bird said it won’t be too many more years before he starts considering retirement and life after Florida Air Academy. “I probably have three or four more years. I’m just going to take it easy and do a little traveling,’’ he said. SL

New Compassionate Allowances conditions mean faster disability decisions By Blanca Taylor Social Security Public Affairs Specialist In April, Social Security announced 52 new Compassionate Allowances conditions to the growing list of severe medical conditions that qualify for expedited medical decisions. The new conditions include many neurological disorders, cancers, and rare diseases. The Compassionate Allowances initiative is a way of quickly identifying diseases and other medical conditions that invariably qualify as “disabled” based on minimal medical information. Compassionate Allowances allow Social Security to quickly identify the most obviously disabled individuals for allowances based on objective medical information that we can obtain quickly. The announcement of 52 new conditions, effective in August, will increase the total number of Compassionate Allowances conditions to 165. That list continues to grow as

Social Security, the National Institutes of Health, and a number of patient organizations help identify new conditions that clearly warrant quick approvals. “Social Security will continue to work with the medical community and patient organizations to add more conditions,” U.S. Social Security Commissioner Michael J. Astrue said. “With our Compassionate Allowances program, we quickly approved disability benefits for nearly 61,000 people with severe disabilities in the past fiscal year, and nearly 173,000 applications since the program began.” Social Security develops the list of Compassionate Allowances conditions from information received at public outreach hearings, comments received from the disability community, council of medical and scientific experts, and research with the National Institutes of Health. Shoes with tracking device help locate persons who wander

By mary Brotherton

Persons with Alzheimer's’ disease, or other conditions that make them wander, first relied on caregivers who provided 24hour, round-the-clock vigilance; then supervised living facilities used alarms that sounded whenever someone opened a door without using a disarm code. For those who remained at home, but still wandered, there was the bracelet with a radio transmitter that helped sheriff deputies locate the missing person. Aetrex is a company well-known for its quality footwear and footwear for seniors. The company has completed a slow rollout of a patented GPS shoe, for a convenient, new way to monitor the whereabouts of wanderers. Evan Schwartz, president of Aetrex has been personally touched by Alzheimer's and has helped develop the technology for a shoe he says is comfortable and convenient. “There are two removable insoles, so they can be customized for orthotic needs, he said. The shoes continually report the location of the wearer through tracking software and text message alerts. The shoes feature the latest 2-way GPS tracking technology powered by GTX embedded in the base of the heel, which sends location coordinates to a central monitoring station. Schwartz said, “If a user wearing the shoe wanders off more than a pre-set distance, the caregiver will immediately receive an alert on a smartphone and computer, with a direct link to a Google map plotting their location. As in other alert systems, these programs can be set to alert

more than one person. It can also be set to alert more than one device. Understanding that the majority of his customers still live at home, some with limited financial means, Schwartz said his company is looking into pricing alternatives for the shoe that costs nearly $300 and requires a monthly tracking plan.

Gardening tips for June

Flower of the month

Brevard county Horticulture Extension

Pale Meadowbeauty (Rhexia mariana) is one of 10 species of meadowbeauty found in Florida. Its showy flowers have four petals, pink, rosy-pink or white. Hooked anthers are large, yellow and showy. The delicate petals fall off at the slightest touch, especially in the afternoon. Pale meadowbeauty can be found throughout most of Florida, usually in wet areas, blooming May to October. This particular specimen was photographed in the Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area in June 2011. SL

Continue to fertilize your vegetable plants monthly and remember to spray liquid seaweed on the leaves (both sides with a fine mist late in the day) weekly. Prune blueberry shrubs to shape them. Prune blackberries to the ground.

Dear Gramma Dear Gramma: I’m so embarrassed. My kindly, 80-year-old grandmother wears a bathing suit at the beach. While it’s a one-piece suit, it shows her varicose veins, wrinkles and aged body. I love her and don’t want her embarrassing herself like this. What to do? Suzie Q

It’s a proud day when a grandchild decides to carry on an artistic passion like painting with watercolors. But when that child starts and is successful at it in elementary school, that makes it all the more special. Such is the tradition being passed on from noted Indian Harbour Beach artist Jea Jea Tremble to her granddaughter Olivia Tremble, 11, a sixth grader at Croton Elementary School in Melbourne. “When she was only 18 months old, her parents bought her a plastic easel and even on the first thing she painted, you could tell exactly what it was. She painted all the time, she said. Jea Jea Tremble used to have a group that met weekly to paint together. Olivia proclaimed, at age 5, that she was going to join the group. “She said ‘When I big, I go paint with Grandma.’ Those early works, and many others, are still in her grandmother’s house/studio, many of them made into prints after the originals were sold or auctioned off to raise money for Alzheimer’s disease research, she said. Throughout the months and years, Olivia started to progress in her art and others were taking notice and even opening their wallets, Jea Jea Tremble recalls. “From the time she was 4 years old, she has had her paintings auctioned off by the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation. One of them brought in $1,200, she said. Olivia uses a technique, taught by her grandmother, where the outline of a

Dear Suzie: Hooray for your gramma! She has my admiration for enjoying herself at the beach in a swimsuit, despite potential ridicule from others. At 80 years of age, she’s earned the right to live her life her way, in comfort, as long as she’s not harming anyone. She’s not the one embarrassing herself here. Please rethink your comments and learn that life’s not all about how our bodies look, but what kind of person we are. You say she is “kindly, which tells me she’s a good person. The skinny on chocolate: 5 surprising health benefits From Grandparents.com and guest Dr. Howard Weintraub 1. It can boost your immune system. Like many other plant based foods, cacao (the source of chocolate) is full of antioxidants, which play a key role in supporting a healthy immune system. The rule of thumb with antioxidants is that the deeper the color, the more antioxidants. Dark chocolate is the way to go here; milk chocolate doesn’t have nearly as many benefits. In fact, some sources suggest that adding milk negates chocolate’s healthful benefits. As is true of most foods, the less processing, the better. Raw chocolate bars and truffles, which taste delicious, are now available online and in many health-food stores. 2. Chocolate lowers blood pressure. According to research, the flavonoids in dark chocolate can lower blood pressure, and they appear to improve LDL cholesterol levels, too. However, cautions Dr. Weintraub, “Red wine has flavonoids, too, but this doesn’t give us carte blanche to drink all the wine or eat all the chocolate we want. As a culture, we tend to think if a little is good, a lot must be better and with something as calorically dense as chocolate that could do more harm than good,” he says. 3. It helps prevent tooth decay. Chocolate contains a compound called theobromide. In clinical studies, theobromide has proved effective at eliminating the cavity causing bacteria, streptococcus mutans, which, of course, means fewer cavities. But before you throw away the toothpaste, remember that chocolate usually contains sugar, a notorious bad guy in the world of oral hygiene. If you want to keep your pearly whites in top form, your best bet is to brush and floss regularly no matter how much chocolate you eat. 4. Chocolate boosts your mood. Yes, it tastes good, and things that taste good are pleasurable. For that reason alone, it may be worthwhile to let a square melt in your mouth from time to time. But that melting chocolate may also have a chemical effect on your brain because chocolate contains serotonin, also known as nature’s antidepressant. The endorphins stimulated by pleasure and enhanced by the serotonin can make you feel more relaxed and happy. 5. It provides you with magnesium. Like green leafy vegetables, dark chocolate is high in magnesium. According to the National Institute of Health, magnesium plays a role in more than 300 chemical

reactions in your body. It helps to regulate the digestive, neurological and cardiovascular systems, and is part of the metabolic process that converts food to energy. Your muscles and nerves need magnesium to function properly, and it also helps to regulate your heart beat. One hundred grams of chocolate (about 3.5 ounces) will provide 176 mg of magnesium, more than half the daily recommendation for a woman over the age of 31. Tip from Dr. Weintraub: “Food fads march in and out of our lives. Chocolate is the latest media darling. The truth is it’s a good food with lots to recommend it, not the least of which is that it tastes good. If you’re someone who can enjoy a small square of it as a daily treat, that’s great. But you can’t eat chocolate instead of lean protein and fresh fruits and vegetables. And regardless of what you’re eating, you need to exercise regularly — ideally, for an hour a day, five days a week.” About Grandparents.com Grandparents.com is the premier social media website for the 21st century generation of active, involved grandparents. health & wellness Planning ahead Dear Lynne: My doctor has told me that I will need to stay at a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation following my hip replacement surgery. I am trying to plan ahead on my expenses for this surgery. Will Medicare pay for this facility stay or am I responsible for payment? —Planning Ahead

Events in June Events sometimes change. Please call the numbers provided to verify times and locations.

Ask Lynne Lynne Meagher SHINE

Dear Planning Ahead: Medicare may help pay for a stay in a Medicare-certified Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) if you meet all of the following qualifications: · You need skilled nursing care seven days a week or skilled therapy services at least five days a week; · You were formally admitted as an inpatient to a hospital for at least three consecutive days in the 30 days prior to your admission to the SNF; · Your care in the SNF is related to your hospital care; and · You have Medicare Part A. If you have original (fee-for-service) Medicare, the full cost of the first 20 days in the SNF and part of the cost for an additional 80 days in a benefit period will be paid by Medicare. If you need more care in a SNF in one benefit period, you are responsible for the cost. A benefit period begins the day you begin inpatient care and ends when you have been released from the hospital or SNF for 60 consecutive days. Your SNF payment responsibility with a Medicare Advantage plan, as compared to original Medicare, will differ with each plan. To determine your payment responsibility, call your Medicare Advantage plan administrator or visit its website. If you have long-term care insurance, your policy may cover any additional nursing home days that are not covered by Medicare. Medicaid may also cover your stay if you qualify for this program. To contact a SHINE counselor for assistance with your questions, call the Elder Helpline at 1-800-963-5337. SHINE is a program of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, administered in partnership with the state’s 11 Area Agencies on Aging. For Brevard County, the Area Agency on Aging is the Senior Resource Alliance located in Orlando. If you have a question you would like the Ask Lynne column to answer, please write or email Lynne at Senior Life and look for a response in one of the next issues. SL

St. Barths, French West Indies, a green way of life By martha maSiello

In April, I had the pleasure of visiting friends at their villa on the island of Saint Barthelemy, or St. Barths, and found the adherence to green living amazing. Discovered by Columbus in 1493; fought over by the Arawak Indians when the first French settlers and the Order of Malta appeared; later a refuge for English adventurers and a colony of France, Sweden, and then France again; St. Barth’s shares souvenirs of its past while practicing modern green initiatives. Even before ecology became a concern of the 21st century, St. Barths worked to preserve its environment. A marine park, founded in 1996, has allowed the creation of protected underwater zones around St. Barths. Seeds cultivate more than the garden, says TOPS Special to Senior life

Seeds can add a nutty, salty flavor to snacks and meals, but they also have health benefits. Seeds offer anti-inflammatory properties, promote heart and bone health, and supply essential minerals. TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), the nonprofit weight-loss support organization, explains how various seeds can boost a meal’s nutrition. Pumpkin Pumpkin seeds are rich with protein minerals, including magnesium, manganese, iron, copper and zinc. They are thought to promote prostate health, strengthen bones, and reduce inflammation. Sprinkle pumpkin seeds over a salad, add them to trail mix, toss the seeds with pasta or blend them into a muffin mix. Chia Chia seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can have a positive impact on cholesterol. Add them to yogurt, cereal or oatmeal to get a boost of fiber, calcium and protein.

Sudoku Solution

Sunflower Sunflower seeds are a good source of vitamin E, which serves as an antioxidant and contains anti-inflammatory properties. They also offer copper and selenium, protecting your muscles. Add sunflower seeds to a fresh salad, mix into chicken salad, sprinkle over meat or grind them up for a spread.

Sesame Sesame seeds are a rich source of copper, which may provide arthritis relief. They also contain calcium and magnesium, which may lower blood pressure, protect against

osteoporosis and more. Mix them with steamed vegetables, sautéed fish or chicken, or add sesame seeds to homemade bread. Flaxseed Flaxseed contains alpha linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fat, which may positively impact cholesterol, promote bone health, protect against heart disease and reduce inflammation. Look for milled flaxseed, ground flaxseed or flax meal, which is easier to digest, helping your body absorb more of the nutrients. Include it in muffin or pancake mixes, or blend flaxseed into a fruit smoothie. Sacha Inchi Sacha Inchi nuts (“Inca Peanuts”) contain omega-3 fatty acids and tryptophan, an amino acid, which can help the body control appetite and sleep. They are also a great source of protein. Use Sacha Inchi nuts in a trail mix or purchase roasted nuts at a health food store. Roasting tip: When purchasing any of these seeds, buy them raw. Roast seeds at 375 degrees, because higher temperatures may diminish the beneficial nutrients that seeds offer. TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is the original weight-loss support and wellness education organization. TOPS promotes successful weight management. Visitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS meeting free of charge. Membership is affordable at just $28 per year in the U.S. and $32 per year in Canada, plus nominal chapter fees. To find a local chapter, visit tops.org or find a local group in the Brevard’s Boomer Senior Guide. SL
