Meet fishing legends at fly fishing fair By Flora Reigada Fly fishermen can mark their calendars for the fourth Fly Fishing and Rod Building Fair. It will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at Renzetti Inc., a Titusville manufacturer of fly tying and rod building equipment, owned by Andy and Lily Renzetti. The fair and a fundraiser preceding it will feature a “who’s who” of sport legends. Look for world famous fly angler, author and illustrator Lefty Kreh, along with pros Flip Pallot, Bob Clouser and a host of other prominent figures. The fair is $10 in advance; $15 at the door. Festivities kick off Friday night, Dec. 6, with a reception and fund raiser at the La Cita Country Club. Proceeds will benefit two organizations: Casting for Recovery and Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. Their stated missions follow. “Casting for Recovery provides free support and educational retreats for women in any stage of breast cancer and introduces them to fly fishing.” “Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings.” The fundraiser includes a cocktail reception, meal and auction. Business attire is encouraged.

The Magical Weekend of Giving makes room for visual art By Mary Brotherton In recognition of local nonprofits, Merritt Square Mall is holding The Magical Weekend of Giving the first weekend in December. Central Brevard Art Association (CBAA) will participate in the form of an art show that will take place in the mall’s community room near the Sears inside entrance from noon until 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 and Saturday, Dec, 7. On Sunday, Dec. 8, the show runs from noon to 4 p.m. With space for 53 artists, many of whom are award-winners, this art show is certain to have one-ofa-kind pieces for the art lovers on everyone’s wish list. They will sell and display oils, pastels, acrylics, photography, silks, sea-glass and gem jewelry, sculptures, Papier Mâché figures and hand-crafted lamps. CBAA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization approaching its 54th year of promoting art in the Central Brevard area. The group teaches adults and children in a variety of media. John Medeiros, CBAA publicity

and co-chair of the mall show, said, “We initiated a summer kids’ program this year and had a successful two-week session for children aged 6 through 9. Next summer’s sessions will include kids aged 10 through 15. Plans are also being made to teach kids on Saturdays during this new school year.” He said that artists with specific specialties teach adult classes, which are held during the week, and all levels of talent are welcomed. “Fledgling artists are encouraged to just jump in and discover their talents. There are no tests or judgments on the works produced, since self-satisfaction is the goal.” CBAA awards an annual $1,000 scholarship to a high school student pursuing higher education in an art field. A part of the December’s show proceeds will go to the scholarship fund. Central Brevard Art Association’s studio is located at 103 Barton Blvd. Call 321-632-2922, email cbaaartists@gmail.com or visit cbaaartists.com for more information. SL

Navigating the world of children’s games and apps can be challenging, according to Grandparents Raising Grandchildren of Brevard director Mary Ann Sterling. While there are online app stores with thousands of apps that claim to be educational, very few truly are. And if they’re not fun, kids won’t play with them and won’t learn from them. With this in mind, the learning experts at LeapFrog, the leader in educational entertainment for kids, have assembled a handy checklist for parents to consider before making a purchase: • Comprehensive Skills: Look for games and apps with an emphasis on curriculum like reading, math, science and creativity. • Age-Appropriate: Games should provide children with themes and topics that are relevant for their age group. • Personalized Learning: Opt for games that automatically adjust to your child’s level as he or she progresses. • Educator-Approved: Verify that games have been created By Attorney or approved by TRUMAN SCARBOROUGH learning experts. 239 Harrison Street, Titusville, FL • Fun and Engaging: Select games that For A Complimentary Copy are designed for Phone 321 267 — 4770 kids and kid tested. • Protecting Kids’ Privacy: Confirm that games comply

Boomer’s bucket list is one short

Come Feb.1 the poodle skirt, a symbol of the 1950s Americana style and flare, will hit the Space Coast as the annual Boomer Senior Expo kicks off. Guests, stepping into The Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum in Titusville will feel as if they’ve traveled back to the days of “Grease,” “Happy Days” or simply their teenage years. The museum will transform into a 1950s bash where poodle skits will be as abundant as they were in the days when they first adorned the waists of school girls. To fully understand what was considered one of the most iconic fashion pieces of the decade is to first understand its history. The skirt was introduced in 1947 after Juli Lynne Charlot, a young actress and designer, created the stylish bottom at home. She cut a hole in the middle of a large circle of of felt — an excess of fabric that was not popular during World War II or the Great Depression — large enough for her waist, the skirt reaching just below the knee. She wore it to a holiday party in Los Angeles. As time moved forward, so did the skirt. It was first made in bright girly colors, like pink with crinoline, a stiff fabric underneath to support and shape the piece.

Senior Safari is a chance to say “I do” at the zoo We at Bluewater Creative Group received a tremendous pre-holiday gift on Nov. 8, as all of you overflowed the first Boomer Bash & Senior Center held at the King Center for Performing Arts, kicked off by a very moving Veterans Salute. The day was filled with great exhibits and entertainment. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank each of our sponsors and every one of our readers of Senior Life and sister paper Viera Voice for making each of our Expos a success throughout the past year. Speaking of Expos, save the date to put on your safari khakis and join us for Senior Safari Feb. 7 at Brevard Zoo, the release party for the 2014 Boomer Guide. As always, we pick a great destination location and make it available to you for free, age 55 and over for this event. You can say “I do” at the zoo all over again by renewing your wedding vows for Valentine’s Day, and take a walk on the wild side as you enjoy live music, lots of fun activities and great exhibits all around the zoo grounds. Thank you again for a successful year. We at Senior Life wish you greatest of gifts this holiday season: happiness, health and prosperity. Happy New Year!

Jill Blue-Gaines jill@myseniorlife.com

Letter to the Editor Dear Senior Life, I would like to congratulate you and your organization for putting on one of the most informative health and wellness fairs I’ve ever seen in Brevard County. As a volunteer for seven years with SHINE, I have been present at many health and wellness events. The one at the King Center was more than just a health and wellness event, it was a showcase for all of Brevard County and it’s cultural activities. I hope you will consider having another one next year and that you will invite SRA and SHINE again. It was a great place for organizations to get the word out on the who, what and where we are and what we do. We had a large number of people stop at our table and inquire about SHINE. Again, congratulations on your very successful event. Catherine Casabianca SHINE Outreach Coordinator

Tango: Que Bueno!

special to senior life

SENIOR LIFE Photo

Dolores Ashland and Guillermo Gonzalez Naya, dancing the tango in Paris, will be going on tour in Europe this month.

A new wave of music has arrived to Satellite Beach and Cocoa Beach on the Space Coast — Argentina tango, as offered throughout the world. Originating in Argentina at the turn of the 19th century, it has gained a global following. Made popular in movies such as “Scent of a Woman,” the dance and passion of the music draws interest from all ages. Dolores Ashland and Guillermo Gonzalez Naya, a native of Buenos Aires, will offer free tango lessons at Neptune Bar & Grill in Satellite Beach from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1 and 8, and at Brasas Grill Brazilian Steak House in Cocoa Village from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. The evenings are rounded off by live dance performances and music, sung by Guillermo, featuring some

of the top and most popular tangos. In addition, community recognition and involvement extends to the SPCA of Brevard County, which each week provides a free raffle to all event participants as well as a 50-50 raffle. The Suntree YMCA rounds off the giveaways with monthly family membership prizes and informs event participants of the YMCA mission to reach out and support community-wide events. Other supporters include Shoetique, offering gift vouchers to participants in the form of dance shoes to help make dancing the tango a comfortable and inviting dance. So, say the dance experts, come on out and learn the tango and you, too, may fall in love all over again. For more information, call 314-775-4086, or visit porunacabezamilonga on Facebook. SL

Not only will Boys & Girls Club members get a new Cocoa building for activities Dec. 16, but they will have a brand new playground to romp on that will be open for the surrounding community day and night. The KABOOM! nonprofit playground builder brought together 200 volunteers from the community and Disney Cruise Line to build the colorful structures in eight hours on Saturday, Nov. 16. The playground was the cherry on top for the club, which took years of stops and starts to secure, according to Dr. Maxwell C. King, one of the community leaders who rallied his peers to put up the money for the project. “I’m just one of many who saw the need for this and made it a top priority,” said King, retired president of what is now Eastern Florida State College. After nearly going defunct five years ago, the Brevard arm of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida is going strong in Mims and Melbourne, both serving challenged urban areas with numerous housing projects. Business is brisk for Something Sweet Cake Studio in Port St. John, according to owner Johnnie Messler.

Winning cake studio serves up the sweetest in cakes and cupcakes for Port St. John customers By Rosemary H. Lynn Johnnie and Shawn Messler of Port St. John opened Something Sweet Cake Studio in Titusville nearly 11 years ago. About nine and a half years later, they decided that a move closer to Cocoa and Rockledge would be a good one for their business and their personal lives since they live with their two children in Port St. John. They are thriving in their new location and business has never been better. About a year ago, the two were featured on the popular television reality show, which they won. After that, the business began to really boom and they became successful beyond their wildest dreams. “Soon after the show aired, people would line up outside to buy cakes and cupcakes,” Johnnie Messler said. “We sold 1,000 cupcakes in one day. It was crazy!” But word of mouth of the store’s confections soon got around to people who live in places other than Port St. John or Titusville. “We get folks coming from Suntree and Viera all of the time,” Messler said. “We have quadrupled our business since moving from downtown Titusville.” One of the events this year was handing out cupcakes to kids on the first day of school. Messler estimates that they served 500 cupcakes that day. Messler’s mom helps in the large kitchen in the back of the store. During holidays, they specialize in pies which she loves to bake. Special occasions, such as weddings and birthdays, always attract special orders for birthday cakes and cupcakes and beautiful, tiered

wedding cakes. Custom cakes can be decorated to fit nearly any theme. It is amazing that the Messlers, themselves, are the only ones to run the store. But watching as people come and go, it is a smoothly run operation with Johnnie baking in the back with her mom and Shawn holding down the fort in the front. All of the baked goods are made on the premises. The store is open only four days a week so that they can handle ordering, paperwork and other necessary operational duties the rest of the time. On Sundays, they spend time with their family. According to the Messlers, it is essential that everything be fresh, so once they are out of cupcakes, the store closes for the day. Leftovers are donated to various businesses or charitable organizations in the area. Something Sweet Cake Studio is located at 3740 Curtis Blvd., Ste. 110, Port St. John. OUR columnists Enchanting Lakes

If you are interested in doing something different, look into visiting and walking around these four wonderful lakes in downtown Orlando. My granddaughters Amie and Chrissy live in downtown Orlando and they introduced me to these small magnificent lakes that are surrounded by the hustle and bustle of downtown Orlando. These lakes are in the old part of Orlando. The homes surrounding the lakes are in many cases more than 100 years old and all are in excellent condition. Many of the homes have been completely restored to their original 20th century condition. Lake Eola is a small lake in the park and has an outstanding fountain that changes colors at night like a light show. There is a walking path that goes around the lake. Located in the park is the Walt Disney Amphitheater, which hosts many community events and various performances year round. On the east side of the park is a Chinese pagoda, a Confederate States of America monument and a playground. The park hosts craft shows, farmers markets and fairs nearly every Saturday and Sunday. There are also a number of excellent restaurants in walking distance of Lake Eola. Four streets border Lake Eola Park: East Robinson Street (State Road 526), Rosalind Avenue (SR 527), East Central Boulevard and North Eola Drive. Greenwood Lake is a charming body of water that makes me believe when I walk around the lake that I’m in the Adirondacks of New York. This small beautiful Lake is just south of Highway 408 and Anderson Street, between Mills Avenue and Hampton Avenue. Located right next to the lake is the famous old

Touring the Town John Trieste

Greenwood Cemetery. The cemetery is also a must visit. It has Union and Confederate Civil War burial sections and a section for the deceased of the Spanish American War. Greenwood Lake and the adjoining cemetery are about two miles southeast of Lake Eola. Lake Davis is just a few blocks west of Greenwood Lake. This beautiful small lake has a walking path around it and is surrounded by the most inviting and expensive homes in the area. Wonderful majestic live oak trees are over you as you walk around the lake. Most of the homes are from the early and mid 20th century and all are in mint condition. Lake Davis and nearby Lake Cherokee are by far in my humble opinion the most attractive places to reside in downtown Orlando. Lake Cherokee is a short distance west of Lake Davis and both lakes are very similar. This lake also has an excellent walking path that goes around the lake. Separated by lovely Cherokee Park, the lakes are without a doubt an escape from the hustle of built-up downtown Orlando. Enjoy the cobblestone streets, beautiful houses and the gorgeous view of nearby downtown Orlando. If you want a bite to eat, try the inviting Mills Market Café at 903 Mills Ave. and Gore Street. SL

Living in an HOA This column will discuss the many aspects and variables of association living. We’ll start by briefly describing the several different types of associations in Florida. Often, owners will use HOA as a generic term for their association. HOA is actually an abbreviation for Homeowners Association governed by statute FL720. Homeowners usually own the lot surrounding their home and a percentage of common areas and amenities of the association. Condominium associations fall under statute FL718. Owners own only everything inside the paint of their unit. Everything outside of the paint, including the building(s), common areas and amenities is owned by the association and each owner shares a percentage of ownership. FL723 regulates mobile homes. Owners usually own their mobile home and pay rent to a park owner in order to use the common areas and amenities. In some cases, owners own their mobile home and the association owns the common areas and amenities. In this case owners share a percentage of ownership and most provisions of FL720 would apply. Less common in Florida are cooperative associations regulated by

12

Senior Life

Association Living Frank Kneiser,

CMCA, AMS, PCAM

FL719. Owners buy shares in the coop which owns all units, buildings, common areas and amenities. These associations generally have some things in common. All are governed by a board of directors, usually elected by members. The board has a fiduciary duty to carry out all of the provisions of the articles, declaration and bylaws. Members pay assessments for the maintenance and management of common areas and amenities. Associations are usually referred to as deed restricted, which means owners are required and agree to abide by all rules and regulations found in the declaration and bylaws. SL It’s important to point out that Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his community association manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@suntreeflorida.com.

Tradition Tradition is a big part of the holiday period for young and old. People who live a long life are usually the ones who want to preserve traditions — the customs and beliefs of their families. It is more than “we have always done it this way.” Traditions are messages for cultural continuity that are passed on by word of mouth or written instruction. These practices can inspire, intimidate and infuriate. Holiday pageants, attending Midnight Mass, or attending church services on Christmas Day are longstanding traditions. Every generation reflects on the practices of the old folks. Families participate, practice, and may even grumble about their expected role. Youth may hear: “Do it for Grandma! It’s only once a year.” There is the Christmas dinner with baked ham. Each generation of women cuts off the ends of the ham before putting it in a pan for baking. Finally, a young man observing the practice asks “Why do you cut off the ends of the ham before you bake it?” His wife, his mother-in-law and grandma responded “We have always done it this way.” Finally, they ask great grandma the question. She responds “I cut the ends off because the pan was too small.” Many traditions are not questioned or challenged. Some have great significance and others are part of the seasonal rituals. We can remember Tevye, the Jewish father in the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” as he yells “Tradition!” He had to cope with the village matchmaker and his

Challenges of Living to Age 100 Ed Baranowski daughters. One had fallen in love with a young man who was not selected by the matchmaker. He has to deal with tradition and the heart. Family vacations, reunions and special event gatherings become part of the traditions that help extend life. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings and community events are part of the tradition journey. Ethnic events focus on connection with the homeland and pride for our background. National holiday observances trigger memories of patriotism, our place in the world and our contributions. History is preserved and remembered. Each new generation begins its own traditions for the holidays or for recognizing special events. Even “Dear Abby” responding to a complaint about the “same old stuff” stated, “Just tell Mom that you are not making the trip. It’s probably time for you and your family to start your own traditions.” SL Ed Baranowski is president of Topics Unlimited, a Melbournebased education, seminar, and consulting firm. You can reach him at topicsed@aol.com.

Funny thing is… As the holidays draw near and the advertising and shopping hits its annual last minute frenzy we salute the couch potato who never misses his game on TV, rarely has to fight the crowds at the malls or grocery store and even may have someone else mowing the yard. How can anyone get away with that and not get in trouble? The method is called “Selective Incompetence.” What is it and how does it work? The other day I’m going through the TV Guide to find what time my favorite game is coming on. From the other room, I hear a frightening voice that sounds like “put your hands up and give me your wallet” but is actually saying “go to the mall and buy some toys for the grandkids.” I don’t want to go but to keep peace I dust the Cheetos crumbs off my shirt and head for the mall. What do I come home with? Toys for 10 to 12 year olds. My grandkids are 2 and 4. I’m not asked to go again. Selective Incompetence. When asked to go to the store the other day, I detoured on the way to my favorite pub for a quick cocktail

Funny thing is... Sammy Haddad

before encountering the hysteria at the store, and for some reason couldn’t remember exactly what I was supposed to get. I was supposed to get a Swifter but came home with a brandy container called a snifter. Selective Incompetence. Now, I don’t want to imply that I’m lazy or stupid, because in order to make Selective Incompetence work, you have to be good at something. I take really good care of the cars and am a whiz with finances, but I hate to mow. So when sweetly asked to mow, I accidently ran over a couple of flower beds and a sprinkler head. Next day, we hired a lawn service and I’m never going to miss another game on TV. Go Browns. SL

Hear Your Best for the Holidays this Year!

Mark Twain once advised people to “Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Americans today have taken that advice to heart, and are visiting places around the globe, often for vacations, and sometimes to relocate in another country. If you are one of these people and receive Social Security benefits, we offer a special website: “Social Security Payments Outside the United States.” Here you can find answers to such questions as “will my Social Security payments be affected? Do I have to let Social Security know I’m out of the country? When should I do it? What happens if I need to contact Social Security while I am out of the country?” You can find answers to all of these questions and others at socialsecurity. gov/international/payments.html. The website features a “Payments Abroad Screening Tool,” which asks you a few short questions to determine if your payments can continue. The page also offers links to publications, such as “Your Payments

While You Are Outside The United States,” which explains how your benefits may be affected and other important information you need to know about receiving Social Security benefits while outside the country. And one more important point to note. If you receive Social Security benefits as a dependent or survivor there are additional U.S. residency requirements that may affect your benefit payments while you are outside the United States. It also is important to note that there are different provisions for anyone receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Once you have been outside the United States for 30 or more days in a row, your SSI cannot start again until you have been back in the country for at least 30 consecutive days. There are special rules for dependent children of military personnel who leave the United States and exceptions for students studying abroad. So if you receive Social Security or SSI benefits and are planning to travel or live outside the United States, you’ll first want to pay a visit tosocialsecurity.gov/international. SL

On Dec. 5, Tony will shoot a commercial with the Jacksonville Jaguars players to promote childhood health. Sophia is in 10th grade at Eau Gallie High School and is dual enrolled at Eastern Florida State College, so she will graduate with an associate’s degree as well as a high school diploma in 2014. She was tapped to attend a Yale leadership program over the summer. Active in theatre, she now excels in lacrosse, and her grandparents pitch in to cover costs for the expensive sport. Her grandparents have played a key role in her success, Sofia said. “They always show up for my shows and my games,” she said. “It really feels good to have their support, and to know they really, really want me to have the best life possible, and all the tools to achieve it.” SL

Grandparents Vondalyn and Richard Taylor get ready for the holidays with their grandchildren, Sofia and Tony Mazo and their family dog, Gigi. By Linda Wiggins

What if you had someone in your life who cared enough to find out what gift would really please you, and took the pains to get it? Sofia and Tony Mazo have that, times two. Their grandparents, Richard and Vondalyn Taylor, make it a priority to help give their grandchildren what they need, and within reason what they want as well, even if it means a culture shock. “A couple of years ago I was obsessed with Angry Birds,” said Tony, a fifth grader at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in Cocoa Beach, referring to the popular video game and smart phone and tablet app. “I snuck under the tree to preview my Christmas presents, and I saw a triangle shaped one from my Grandparents. I squeezed it, and knew it was a plush figure of one of my favorite characters from the game.”

The search proved daunting at first. “I called around to all the department stores trying to find out what an angry bird was supposed to be,” Richard Taylor said. “That must have been a real treat to get that call from me.” The love and support the Taylors show their grandchildren is a boon for their working parents, the Taylors’ daughter Keturah and her husband, Richard. “The children’s other grandparents live out of state, so they’re it, the only ones close enough to see regularly,” Keturah Mazo said. “So, their help is doubly important.” The Taylors serve as a cheering section for their grandchildren’s academic and athletic accomplishments. Tony was selected as one of five National Ambassadors in the national Fuel Up to Play 60, based on his academic and sports talents, winning money for his school. The nonprofit brings together

Dear Gramma: My friend Rita was hospitalized recently. I took care of her parakeet Petey until I could find someone to do it. The problem is, because of her deteriorating condition, Rita won’t be able to return to her home or provide for her pet again. Please tell people to find someone who’ll care for their pet if they become ill, hospitalized or pass away. This was a difficult experience for me as I’m elderly, unwell and the worry and time spent trying to find a caregiver for Petey, wore me down. —Best Friend Dear Best Friend: Your letter tells it better than I could. Attention pet owners: Be sure to have a designated caregiver for your beloved pet should you become unable to care for it. Your pet deserves to be loved and cared for and it’s something you’d want for them, too. Make those arrangements now. —Gramma Holly Fox Vellekoop, MSN, is the Brevard author of “How to Help When Parents Grieve” and “Justice and Revenge.” A retired Penn State University clinical instructor with six grandchildren, Vellekoop has a master of science degree in Nursing. Local charities to benefit from MMB concert, toy and food drive

The Melbourne Municipal Band’s 2013 holiday concert brings together the themes of holiday cheer and giving, with two musical performances of “Candy Canes and Carols” that also feature toy and food collections, and informative displays from local charities. The concerts will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday Dec. 11 and 12 at the Melbourne Auditorium, 625 E. Actors from churches and ministries across Brevard act out the story of Jesus in a moving play known as the “Bible on Parade.”

Moving Bible story marks 24th year

“The Bible On Parade” is a unique expression that was launched in 1990 and has become a historic event now celebrating its 24th year. The 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 event starts and returns to the Melbourne Auditorium. Spectators along the 2-mile route are taken back to Bible times as costumed characters tell the Bible story in celebration of “The Birth of Jesus, The Christ of Christmas,” through a moving drama. The parade makes a complete loop, purposely including senior living facilities and nursing homes. At Hibiscus Court, Catalina Gardens, Brookshire and Avante, escorted by the Melbourne Police Department, the parade pauses to greet, pray with and give a Bible Bear to each resident waiting for the parade to pass by. Then, the parade heads down Bulldog Boulevard, turns toward Holmes Regional Heart Center and turns on Pine Street, passing the Melbourne Cancer Care Center. It then heads onto Hibiscus Boulevard and back to the Melbourne Auditorium for a celebration that follows, with free hot dogs, cake and drinks, live music and entertaining presentations. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call Jesus Is The Key Church at 321-773-1489 or go to thebibleonparade.org.

Discover the Anterior Approach to total hip replacement

Bonnie,

PINNACLE® Hip Implant and Anterior Approach patient

The potential for less pain, faster recovery, improved mobility1 If hip pain has you feeling less like yourself, the Anterior Approach to total hip replacement could help get you back on track. The Anterior Approach is an alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery. It provides the potential for less pain, faster recovery and improved mobility.1 Unlike traditional hip replacement surgery, the Anterior Approach allows the surgeon to work between your muscles, typically causing less trauma to your body. And less trauma may result in an easier, quicker recovery.1

Important Safety Information: Hip replacement is not for everyone. There are potential risks. Recovery takes time, and success depends on factors like age, weight and activity level. Only an orthopaedic surgeon can tell if hip replacement is right for you.

Viera couple enjoy retirement on golf course By Jeff Navin Jim Taube loves to tell stories. Detroit was different when he was a child. Joe Louis was the king of boxing, the city of his youth ruled the flourishing auto industry and a fun day in the winter time included a game of hockey or perhaps just a race on skates. “Joe Louis had a crush on a gal across the street,’’ said Taube, who at 93 years old still plays golf on a regular basis at Viera East Golf Club with his wife Dottie. “Her name was Elsie Roxborough and Joe would come over all the time. He really wanted to marry Elsie. He was the nicest person you’d ever want to meet. I once had a pair of his championship gloves. I ended up selling them for $10. I wish I had them now.’’ Taube possesses something more valuable than the old gloves — his health. He and his wife have lived in Viera for the past 11 years after moving north from Boynton Beach, where the couple met after both of their divorces. They have been married for the past 41 years. Both have lived in Florida since the 1950s. Dottie, a native of New Jersey, moved to Florida in 1955 after graduating from Limestone College in South Carolina. Jim already had left Detroit earlier in the decade, taking a transfer from General Motors. He worked in public relations after

graduating from the University of Illinois. Before that, he served in the Navy during World War II. Dottie Taube played basketball in high school and started playing golf around 1970. “Four of us girls were bankers and we were allowed to follow the men on Saturday at North Dade Golf Club,’’ Dottie Taube said. “Banking was very hard. You were nobody, and even though you would do what the men were doing, you got nothing. It was a lot of work for very little pay. I did well because I was good, but there definitely was partiality toward men.’’ Besides golf, Jim Taube likes to ride his bike, swim and use the exercise room at Grand Isle. Dottie Taube does all of that plus yoga and pickleball, a variation of tennis, badminton and table tennis. “I still have a martini every night,’’ Jim Taube joked. “I used to have two, but I’ve cut it down. I’m not that good a (golfer) anymore,” he said. “My putting is not as good. I like the people here and I like this golf golf course. It’s not easy. The men’s group here is second to none.’’ He lost the vision in one eye about 12 years ago. Dottie Taube shared her prescription for maintaining joie de vivre. “Keeping active will change your life,’’ Dottie Taube said. “We do

something all the time. People are just lazy when they get older and make an excuse for everything. People can be athletic no matter the age. I like the companionship of golf and being outdoors. It’s a challenge where you can have a good time.’’ She also doesn’t worry about the occasional bad golf shot. “You just have to go on to the next hole,’’ she said. “If you don’t hit it right, you can’t blame the club. Some people can be very negative and that doesn’t make VIERA VOICE Jeff Navin for good company. You don’t want to beat home to retrieve them. yourself to death.’’ “I’m not that good a player Jim Taube accepts his limitations, anymore,” but he said, “I’m the oldest refusing to fret if he forgets his golf player here and I’m having fun.’’ SL

Viera resident — veteran golf nut

Jackie and John Gulla have traveled with the Army and in civilian life. During these travels, he has collected more than 350 logo golf balls, many of which are on display in his Viera home. Many of the balls are from courses the couple have played. Others are the result of family, neighbors, friends and fellow golfers who have brought them from places they have visited. Gulla owns golf balls from courses in South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany,

Belgium, Australia and Taiwan. He started his collection after returning from his tours of duty in Vietnam in 196667 and 1970-71, so he has no golf balls from either the Republic of Vietnam or Taipei — two courses he played while in Southeast Asia on active duty. His collection covers a majority of the 50 states and includes Hawaii and Alaska, but he is still shy of a number of them. He uses the email address of golfnut1960@ hotmail.com and asks anyone going on vacation to purchase logo golf balls on his behalf, reimbursing them for their efforts. One of his most cherished golf balls is the one he received from his motherin-law, Rita E. Chabot. He said the golf ball has been in outer space and as a result, holds a prominent place on his spare bedroom wall. SL

Fishing continued from page 2 The cost is $50. Tickets must be purchased in advance by Dec. 3. Fair activities focus on promoting the sport through education and hands-on seminars. This involves tying and casting presentations, rod building demonstrations, company tours and exhibitors presenting the latest gear. But for Lily Renzetti, fly fishing is about more than equipment. It’s also about art, and it will be on display at the fair, featuring the work of wood carver Tom Burke and well-known Florida angler and artist David Whitlock. Renzetti spoke of her love for the sport. “It’s beautiful and relaxing to be out on the water, looking at the birds and listening to the sounds of nature. But it is also a challenge because one must master the skill of casting in a way that will attract fish without disturbing the water.” Renzetti, Inc. is located at 8800

boomers

Boomer girls laugh through hardship one page at a time By Linda Wiggins Baby boomers dodged the bullet of hardship that their World War II-era parents endured, allowing them to become the all-about-Me Generation. As they age, however, boomers are now facing the hardest of hard times as their parents grow frail and need care, and at the same time their adult or young children still demand or need care, all while trying to carve out some sense of who they are themselves. There is hope in the message authors Mia Crews and Karlene Conroy will bring to the 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5 talk, “Surviving the Sandwich,” at the Suntree/Viera Library. The Sandwich Generation refers to boomers who are wedged between caring for their parents and their children. “This is supposed to be the time of our lives when we can stop living so much for others and figure out what we really want to do with our lives,” said Crews, who with Conroy wrote the recent book “The Don Quixote Girls,” a fictional tale based on characters who possess many of their own hopes, dreams and failings. “But as much as we try to pull away, we keep getting pulled back in to the concerns of others.”

They chose the title of the book from the 1605 novel “Don Quixote” by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, from which comes the expression “tilting at windmills,” to wage an idealistic fight with little hope of victory. The humorous story of four friends is set in an actual area in the Panhandle, but in a town with a fictional name, Paradise, “because their lives are anything but.” “If we could sum up what the book is all about, it would be the same thing that will save your sanity as a member of the Sandwich Generation: friendship. That is what is going to get you through the hardest of times,” Conroy said. “That, and humor, even in the most ridiculously bad situations. We laughed all through writing this book.” One of the toughest parts of the book’s sweet success is that both Conroy’s and Crews’ mothers passed away before it was published and they could not read the final product. “That’s just one of the many hardships we shared in common,” Crews said. “We both lost our fathers just before that, the list goes on. What we realized in talking to others is that we are not alone in what we are experiencing.”

A holiday challenge: Replacing grief with gratitude all mother-daughter relationships are adversarial to a degree. Did I have time to put that in perspective before her final days? Guilt can deepen feelings of grief beyond what we experience in the loss of love. It makes it hard to get to the place of joy that we can hopefully reach after the loss, by focusing on the gift that the loved one was to us during a life span. I thought of this when I did the article in this issue on the Caregiver Life Transitions series that Aging Matters in Brevard does for clients who have lost a spouse. Christmas can be an especially tough time for widows and widowers, but did you know that studies show that a child caregiver to an aging parent can experience even more grief than losing a spouse? That is definitely true of my sister, the saint I recruited to care for my mother during her bout with cancer, who decided to stay on and make our

By Linda Wiggins Mia Crews and Karlene Conroy brought some important things to my attention when I chatted with them for the Boomer feature in this issue. They are classic examples of the Sandwich Generation, having cared for their aging parents who have now passed on, and dealing with the headaches of caring for adult children they thought would be on their own once they left the nest. Many of us, like myself, have already bid their parents farewell. Does this take us out of the Sandwich? Perhaps not. First, there are the holidays. This is a time when we think about and long for the loved ones we have lost. We see fine holiday settings in commercials where intact families sit around the table looking lovingly at one another. Was my relationship with my mother like that? It is said that

mother’s care her career for seven years before Alzheimer’s slowly took her from us. She more than earned my mother’s house that became hers in return. Perhaps my sister also grieves her lost identity as maternal caregiver. Odd thing about that awful disease. It causes death in reverse. Eventually, all my mother’s friends and even most of my siblings stopped coming around or calling once my mother could no longer recognize them. As if it were all about them. What about providing companionship for the soul who once inhabited a cherished friend or relative? More importantly, what about providing emotional support for the adult child who chooses to give up a social life and career to stay close at hand? The tasks my sister had to perform, I won’t even go there. Sorry, for those of you who didn’t serve on the front line, you don’t need any more guilt. We all care for our aging parents in ways we

are able. In my case, God blessed me in the 11th hour with a husband and children, removing me from the direct-care role I filled for years as youngest bachelorette daughter. I could no longer focus my attention in the direction of my family of origin because I was needed as the hearth of the family of my own. Thank God. At the risk of sounding corny or patronizing — I hate smaltzy columnists who feel the need to pretend to know all — perhaps the Season of Giving is time to get beyond the grief to focus on the gift our loved one was to us during the time we had them on Earth. When someone gives us a gift, we are grateful. We don’t complain that it was the wrong size, color, or that — in the case of a loved one — it didn’t last long enough. As I dry the tears the thought of this prospect brought, I am going to commit to focusing on just that. SL

Groups donate toys to foster “sense of normalcy”

The Hospice of St. Francis Care Center is a new 15,000-square-foot facility that will offer residents of North Brevard a place for loved ones to receive paliative care close to home.

The holiday season stirs generosity in even the Scrooges among us, and this year the community e has plenty of opportunity to give. This month Charity Chicks will hold their third annual Festival n of Wreaths fundraiser, and the Greek American Association of Brevard (GAAB) will host their second annual toy drive, all to benefit children under the care of Devereux Florida. Devereux is a nonprofit that brings behavioral healthcare services to children and adolescents, and they take care of nearly 1,000 children annually. “We have children in residential treatment, in foster care and as outpatients,” says Patty d.Hurst, donor relations manager for Devereux. “All of those thousand y children need a holiday gift.” The children typically come from impoverished backgrounds and are s unfamiliar with erwhat most s Americans VIERA VOICE Amy Blalock s-take for Kathi Ridner and Kate Hagberg granted, from prepare for the Festival of Wreaths. visiting Santa to baking Christmas cookies. Guests will enjoy abundant hors d’oeuvres, drinks and desserts, as well as craft vendors and live music. Children can do crafts, have their faces painted and get their photos taken with Santa. “Every year it gets bigger and bigger,” says Denise Leblanc of Charity Chicks. The toy drive hosted by GAAB will be a “brunch and mimosas” event at the CasaBella Clubhouse on Dec. 15 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The brunch is free to anyone who brings unwrapped toys. “We were so thrilled and so humbled with the participation [last year],” says Ioanna Hawkins, secretary of GAAB. “This year the children have increased and we decided to do the toy run again.” Community members who can’t make it to the drive but still wish to donate can call GAAB. “The children ask, ‘Where did this come from? Who gave me a gift? They don’t even know me!’” says Hurst. “They’re appreciative that somebody cares.” For more information about the toy drive, or to schedule a toy pickup, call 321-610-6050. New hospice care center opens Special to Senior Life Hospice of St. Francis will host the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Edward M. Poe Hospice Care Center from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, with the ribbon cutting at 4:30 p.m. The Care Center is located on the grounds of the corporate office located at 1250 Grumman Place in Titusville. The community is invited to join the celebration. The Hospice Care Center is a 15,000-square-foot facility that will provide a high level of symptom management for hospice patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each of the suites will provide adequate space for family members to visit and be complete with a private 10 foot by 10 foot porch. The care center building, with beautifully landscaped grounds, has a chapel, a playroom for children and a kitchenette for the families. Hospice of St. Francis Care Center is the only facility of its type in North Brevard.

“We are so excited to be opening our new Edward M. Poe Hospice Care Center,” said Bruce Wolters, president/CEO of Hospice of St. Francis. “We will now have the ability to provide our patients with a high level of symptom management in a home-style setting. The Hospice Care Center has been one of our goals since our inception. We are fortunate that the Edward M. Poe Foundation made a significant contribution. Poe was a longtime resident of Titusville who was tireless in helping the community. We named the Care Center in honor of him.” Hospice of St. St. Francis, which serves all of Brevard County, was founded in 1977 and has offices in Titusville and Melbourne. It is Brevard’s only independent, nonprofit hospice serving the pain relief and symptom management needs of patients nearing end-of-life. Hospice of St. Francis support programs serve the many needs of families with terminally ill loved ones. For more information, go to hospiceofstfrancis.com. SL

Artists pack a purple punch for Alzheimer’s awareness

SENIOR LIFE Linda Wiggins

Four of the five paintings were sold to donors to benefit the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation, while the fifth was donated for permanent exhibit to the Purple Balloon Alzheimer’s Awareness Center, a new BAF program.

The Boomer Bash & Senior Expo held Nov. 8 at the King Center featured some unique events, activities and attractions. One that drew a lot of attention was the “artists paint-around,” in which renowned local artists co-created original watercolor paintings in the morning, with their five shared works silent auctioned that afternoon to Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation. One of the original works became a permanent exhibit at the new BAF Purple Balloon Alzheimer’s Awareness Center, featured on page 11 of this issue. Lolly Walton, Therese Ferguson, Phyllis Shipley, Dorothy A. Rhines and Barbara Rios each made an initial line drawing that incorporated a purple balloon theme for Alzheimer’s awareness, and then began to add color for the first 15 minutes. When the timer sounded, they rotated to work on another’s piece, until all five artists could sign their names at the bottom of the masterpieces to which they contributed time and talent.

“If we weren’t best friends before, we are now,” said Walton, who humorously posted a sign at her work station that read “Beware of the Attack Artist,” ensuring uninterrupted concentration. “We’re lucky,” she added with a grin. “It could have gone another way.” SL

SALUTE

Retired Lt. Gen. Wendell Koontz walks the walk of faith BY Maria Sonnenberg Wendell Koontz, a man who once flew far-flung reconnaissance missions for the Air Force and later piloted gargantuan 747 cargo planes around the globe, delights in helping children thrive in God’s love and in helping prison inmates to rediscover Christ. Koontz definitely walks the walk when it comes to his Catholic faith. “I know a lot of people who spend hours in church every week,” the Indialantic resident said. “I don’t doubt God appreciates this, but I wish they could spend some extra time out in the community, where their contributions could really make a difference for the younger generation. This is a great opportunity for us older persons.” Koontz volunteers weekly at the Dorcas Outreach Center for Kids, or DOCK, a faith-based, afterschool academic mentoring facility for the children of the Booker T. Washington neighborhood, Melbourne’s poorest community. He is also very active with Kairos Prison Ministry, an international program that brings Christ’s love and forgiveness to incarcerated individuals. His story begins in a farm in Lincoln, Neb., where Koontz was born. As he puts it, he ran out of ideas in college and enlisted in the Air Force, where he served as a navigator and later as a pilot, often flying recon missions over Russia. By the time he retired after almost a quarter century of service in such locations as the NATO headquarters in Belgium, Koontz had reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. His second career was all about cargo jets, as he piloted the huge — and full

During his Air Force days, Lt. Gen. Wendell Koontz flew reconnaissance missions. — planes from Hong Kong to the United States. “I’d be gone from home for 18 days at a time,” he said. Turning 60 in the year 2000 with retirement mandatory as a pilot, so Koontz looked for activities with his new freedom. A friend at his Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, suggested the Kairos Prison Ministry.

WINTER TUNE-UP TIME IS HERE!

“I had not become involved because I was gone so much, but in 2000, I ran out of excuses,” Koontz said. “My friend said that when I got involved with Kairos, I was going to get a life sentence.” Koontz did indeed become so drawn to Kairos that he is currently responsible for launching a new prison ministry at the Florida Department of Corrections

Central Florida Reception Center in Orlando. The facility houses male inmates in transition from other facilities. “We have recruited over 40 volunteers from all over Central Florida, some from as far away as The Villages,” he said. Koontz, who has spent the past 13 years helping incarcerated individuals to reconnect with God, realized the need to come to the aid of children after hearing a speech by Judge David Duggan in 2006. “I instantly knew how correct he was with his thinking and resolved to find a place to do this,” he said. “Within a week, I had an accidental encounter with a friend from my church who led me to the DOCK. I’ve been there ever since, one or two afternoons a week.” Koontz helps the children navigate through their homework, which can be hard work for him, at times. “Fourth grade math is certainly not the fourth grade math I remember,” he said. Like many good volunteers, he believes he receives as much as he gets. “These kids can be so sweet and they’re so smart,” the grandfather of four said. “It’s like having another set of grandchildren.” The Dorcas Outreach Center for Kids, operated by the nonprofit Brevard Neighborhood Development Coalition, is in need of volunteers who, like Koontz, are willing to donate a few hours a week to help children from impoverished neighborhoods. Volunteers serve as mentors and as academic coaches to help level the educational playing field for these youngsters. For more information, call 321-2534214 or see BNDCserve.org. Kairos Prison Ministry also needs volunteers to help with its programs in local prisons to help inmates take responsibility for their life choices and their relationship with God. For more information, contact Koontz at 321-2235551 or call 800-298-2730. SL

Boomer Bash & Senior Expo is a hit with attendees and exhibitors alike By Linda Wiggins

Thousands of attendees poured through the Nov. 8 Boomer Bash & Senior Expo at the King Center for the Performing Arts, which opened with a Veterans Salute that honored hundreds of heroes. Unique attractions proved popular. Artists performed a watercolor “paint-around” to benefit the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation with the silent auction of their five shared works. One of the original works became a permanent exhibit at the new BAF Purple Balloon Alzheimer’s Awareness Center. Entertainer Mario Busacca led an enthusiastically interactive “Intro to Improv,” while on a more serious note, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey gave personal safety tips. It encouraged audience members to allow BCSO staff to survey their homes and businesses for security threats. Ranging from informative to R&R, “All about the iPad” with Nick Villano of Visual Dynamics unlocked the secrets of popular personal devices, while Senior Life travel columnist John Trieste took Friday attendees down memory lane to visit his favorite frugal day trip destinations. Friday Friday Outside, the Patrick Air Force Base 45th Security Forces Squadron Friday performed a fascinating demo with highly motivated canine officer Inez, ordering her to apprehend a heavily padded “bad 9 AM guy” played by a senior airman. News for Titusville, Mims & Port St. John

North Brevard

Travel in time to ancient Bethlehem

SENIOR LIFE photo courtesy of Edmund Kindle

Kim and Matt Lundquist portray Mary and Joseph at Mims United Methodist Church. By Flora Reigada What was life really like in ancient Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth? Did mothers spin wool into thread for clothes, or help their fathers build tools and toys? Were children sent to the market for dates or the apothecary for healing herbs? Mims United Methodist Church will address these questions and more, through Bethlehem in

Mims, a re-creation of the rural village where Jesus was born. It will take place at the church from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. Admission is free and parking is provided. The event is coordinated by Dr. Pamela Tronetti, a Titusville physician specializing in geriatric medicine. The community is invited to take this journey in time. It encompasses the church grounds, indoors and out. “Visitors can explore the village to see how people lived off the land and used natural resources for food, clothing and shelter,” Tronetti said. Volunteers dressed in period clothing, with many of the outfits handmade, will lend authenticity, as will sheep, goats, a donkey and a horse, complete with their bleating and braying. People may catch the scent of frankincense and myrrh. “Visitors will be able to help townspeople stomp grapes for wine and press olives for oil. They may view demonstrations of preparing animal hides, carding wool, spinning wool into yarn, weaving, wood work and pottery,” Tronetti said. “The entire family can learn to weave baskets and play spin the dreidel.” Like to shop? There will be a period marketplace. Biblical foods may also be sampled. These include smoked fish, honey on the comb, dates, pita and pomegranate. “Along the streets, people will pass through an apothecary, where ancient medicines are discussed and

a mortuary where ancient burial practices are discussed. There will also be a synagogue and a Bedouin village,” Tronetti said. The tour concludes with a living nativity inside the sanctuary. “People in those times were very aware there was something larger than themselves,” Tronetti said. Mims United Methodist Church is at 3302 Green St. in Mims. Call 321267-6202 or go to mimsumc.org.SL
