One Of the mOst famOus phOtOgraphs ever taken

re-enacting the kiss By Linda S. HumpHrey

It truly was, and still is, the kiss seen around the world. It has been 66 years since the sailor kissing the nurse made its debut in Life magazine. alfred eisenstaedt’s camera captured the couple kissing in new York City on aug. 14, 1945 in what has been dubbed his v-J Day in times square, one of the most recognized photos ever. the spontaneous kiss was in reaction to the surrender of Japan, ending World War II. the sailor and the nurse did not know one another, although later in life they did correspond, from time to time. senIOr LIfe staff envisioned Bob Bridges, a retired commander with the united states navy, as the one who would be perfect to recreate the iconic kiss for the 2012 Boomer senior guide. Who better to play the part of the nurse than his wife of 30 years, marie, a certified nursing assistant? Bridges recalls his thoughts after being asked to portray the sailor and whether or not his old uniform would still fit. “I could still wear my original pants and still had my hat, also known as a Dixie Cup, but needed to find a dress blue navy jumper or Cracker Jack as we called it,” said Bridges. “I lucked out when the Cocoa army and navy store loaned me just what I needed.” alice and kendall morris own the army and navy store where they offer a huge selection of clothing and other supplies representing each branch of the military. “We do, from time to time, loan out some articles of clothing for special events,” said alice morris.

Happy Anniversary to Senior Life!

This month marks the 11th anniversary of Senior Life and just like any 11-year-old; we know we have not fully reached our potential, despite how much we’ve grown and how much we’ve learned. We have changed over the past 11 years and we know we couldn’t have done it without your support and encouragement. You’ve probably noticed we have some new names in our family of writers and photographers, but we still have many of the names you’ve come to recognize and trust. Lucy Kline has been a favorite columnist with Senior Life for many years and Mary Brotherton has been writing features almost as long. Martha Masiello has also been with us several years. More importantly are you, our readers. Some of you have been reading Senior Life since the very first issue, 11 years ago. Since that time, you’ve seen how the paper has developed and grown. You’ve watched us sponsor wonderful events and stand firm in our commitment to the community. Each month you have shown support of the paper and helped guide us with your comments and suggestions. More importantly, almost every day, someone calls or emails us to let us know how much Senior Life means to them. We like to know that we are providing a service that is not only helpful, but one that you appreciate. That’s the best anniversary gift you could ever give us.

happy holidays to all my friends! as we begin 2012, I want to take a moment to wish each of you a very happy and prosperous new Year. One column you have told us you like is John trieste’s day trips, and this month, you will see a little more about the man behind the column. On friday, Jan. 27, you can meet John and hear his presentation on day trips from Brevard County, when he speaks at the great american Outdoor adventure Day. We are already taking reservations for his presentation and for On stage alaska, a free, fun and informative show you don’t want to miss. seating is limited at this exciting event, so be sure to call our office at 321-242-1235 to reserve your seat before they are all gone. Later this year, we mark senior Life’s 15th anniversary and I want to tell you how thrilled I am to see the growth of the publication. as we have in the past, we are planning something exciting to celebrate our anniversary. You, of course, will be center-stage in our fun! Our 14th anniversary celebration started with a single sleuth’s mystery Dinner show that has now become a quarterly event. Just wait until you see what we have planned for our 15th anniversary! speaking of anniversaries, did you know the Boomer senior guide is six years old? this is our second year to give this comprehensive directory away at an expo and the 2012 expo is going to be a destination event. We are taking the expo to the valiant air Command Warbird museum and have arranged to have the typical entry fee waived for the day. there will be lots of other freebies, too, so plan to join us. You’ll be able to meet some of the people who modeled for our magazine and you can talk to some of the owners of vintage airplanes. hope to see you there! Jill I jill@myseniorlife.com Flower of the Month Wild pennyroyal (piloblephis rigida), a member of the mint family, is found only in peninsular florida and a couple of spots just across the border in georgia. It occurs in well-drained, sunny locations, including pine flatwoods and sandhills. the plant is a perennial, has evergreen foliage, flowers all year, and grows as a clump about 1-2 ft. in diameter and about 1-ft. high. Crushed leaves exhibit a strong fragrance similar to spearmint. It is locally abundant and can be found in the Cruickshank sanctuary and throughout the open pine woods on the north side of Wickham park. suBmItteD BY WaYne matChett

meet the man who taught neil armstrong to land on the moon By anGeLa SmitH

senior Bob pearson of merritt Island admits he’s landed on the moon more than anyone in the world and he’s not joking. In fact, he taught astronaut neal armstrong how to maneuver the sprawling cratered surface. for seven years, beginning in 1966, pearson became essential to the preparations of historic missions as he began working as an

instrumental pilot trainer for astronauts using simulators at the national aeronautics and space administration (nasa) in Cape Canaveral. “It was a job in itself to explain how things work for astronauts in the spacecrafts, pearson said. “We spent hours, one on one with the astronauts in the simulator; we would fly and land over and over. I could’ve landed that spacecraft better than any of them up there.

It’s memories like those that have pearson thankful, now that the space industry, as we know it, has come to a close slowly. “I don’t know if anyone felt the same as I did, but I knew we were certainly making history and there wouldn’t be another first time that someone lands on the moon, pearson said. “I knew these guys needed all the training, so I spent every minute I could at work practicing with them. Before pearson was given the opportunity to work side-by-side with astronauts, he spent four years in the air force on bases throughout the country. It was then that he discovered his passion for computers and decided to attend the university of florida to further his education. his nasa career soon followed.

It is there that he is able to express his love for history, from the Civil War to memorable moments in our own backyard at the Cape, which will come in handy when the museum plays host to the Boomer senior expo. “I’m looking forward to the expo and teaching others, pearson said. “visitors really appreciate the museum and people enjoy learning. january 2012

January is an extra special month for me. In addition to starting off another new year, it’s the month my parents married, the month I was born more than 10 years later and the month I started working at senior Life as the editor, five years ago. the first time I saw a copy of senior Life, nine years ago, and read about the extraordinary people in our county, I was astounded. I wanted to be a part of the publication, so started writing as a freelancer and here I am, today. someone recently asked me what life lesson I had learned in 2011 and the first thing that came to mind was that I discovered my voice. through my monthly letters to you, I have been able to share some small part of who I am with you and the feedback has been phenomenal. I was surprised to learn that some people care what I have to say each month. another powerful life lesson, for me, was the astounding power in relationships. family, friends and business relationships are vital to our day-to-day lives. how seriously we take those relationships determines how those relationships will treat us in the future. Clear, concise communication and a true appreciation for the people in our relationships are important in today’s technologically-driven world. It’s easy to become automated, but it’s fun to be connected. for 2012, my wish is for you to remain connected to the people who are most important in your life. Funny thing is… By Sammy Haddad

everywhere you look you see more or less the same new Year’s resolutions: more time with the family, make more money, enjoy nature more, eat less, drink less, weigh less, and the biggie this year, owe less. I, on the other hand, am a little different (there’s a headline for ya!). so what am I resolute to accomplish in this new and exciting year ahead? I’m making it my personal goal to get people to use their peripheral vision, especially at theme parks and supercenter grocery stores. have you ever been at a theme park, minding your own business, when suddenly someone from the side of you hangs a hard left and almost runs you over with their stroller or wheelchair? same thing in the supercenter. You could be walking as straight a line as the cops use for drunks on I-4, and suddenly notice a shopping cart coming at you from the side. man, if your brakes weren’t working because you’re wearing

Free Caregiver Education

Jordan air quality tennis shoes, you could have been seriously taken out right there in the store. my theory: peripheral vision is functionally negated when you enter these arenas. It’s like when you walk through those metal detectors they diffuse the section of your brain that allows you to see innocent people to your left and right as humans and not obstacles between you and the blue light special you just spotted. You, being a nice person, would stop and wait for them to pass if you could only see them, right? Don’t you remember your mother saying look both ways before you cross the street? Well how come that doesn’t apply in the aforementioned arenas? not your fault. they must be putting something in those scanners at the entrance that causes temporary amnesia from that one statement your mother made years ago. so resolve for the new Year, and the safety of those around you, to be aware that there may be people nearby. Look both ways before proceeding.

OUR

columnists Cruise from Port Canaveral

Your best value in a family vacation is a cruise of any length from our nearby port Canaveral. today our port is not only one of the busiest cruise ports in the united states, but worldwide. In 2011, almost 3 million cruise passengers left from the port or stopped here on visiting ships. What’s so nice about cruising is that once you enter your cabin and put your belongings away, you’re on vacation. there is no more packing and unpacking, no searching for overnight accommodations, no looking for a place for a meal or trying to find suitable entertainment. everything you want is available just footsteps away from your cabin onboard a cruise ship. If you want to participate in the many activities, that’s fine. If you want to read a book on your kindle, that’s also ok. You can do as little or as much as you want on a cruise. If you have never been on a cruise before, try a three-night voyage that usually leaves on a friday afternoon and is back in port early monday morning. the ships stop at the interesting ports of freeport or nassau in the Bahamas. Cruise lines also have private islands in the Bahamas and make a day-long stop so you can experience a bountiful beach cookout and swim in the clear waters. at the present, there are four topnotch, major cruise lines based at port Canaveral. a new terminal is being built for Carnival Cruise Lines to ac-

commodate their three ships, scheduled to be finished sometime in mid-2012. also in 2012, Disney Cruise Lines will introduce its brand new liner, the fantasy at port Canaveral. the Canaveral port authority is also expanding the Disney terminal and building a new parking garage with a direct secondlevel walkway to the Disney terminal. I would suspect that very shortly our port will be the number-one cruise port in the world. If you are planning to take a cruise, I strongly suggest you work with your local travel agency. these folks are professionals and have been in the business for years. they have visited or sailed on all these liners and you should take advantage of their cruise knowledge. travel agents will get you the best value for your vacation dollar. start your vacation right by using a travel professional. It costs, in many cases, less when you use a professional agent than if you do the booking on your own. happy sailing. SL

Shopping or Scavenger Hunt since I retired, I have taken on the task of doing the shopping for groceries and household supplies. the list I take to the store is much like a scavenger hunt list used in a Boy scout event. this 70-plus errand boy is challenged on every outing. What fun! When I return from the store, the final inspector of provisions—my wife and partner of more than 50 years— quickly points out the errors made in procurement. she admonishes: “Didn’t you read the list?” further, there are loving comments like, “Don’t you know the difference between sugar-free and no sugar added?” I have also learned the importance of reading the labels, checking coupons and understanding pricing strategies. I have recognized that packages may be the same size, but the weight has changed. I should get a clue from the message “we have provided space for contents to shift to avoid breakage.” this translates to, “Old guy, we are giving you less for a higher price.” When I buy tuna, I have to be sure it is “albacore in water” and not “solid white in oil.” try buying coffee with choices of high test, decaffeinated or flavored. Want some creamer? there is regular, lite, reduced fat and flavored. When I buy ground beef, there are choices like lean, 85/15 fat content or coarse ground.

When I was a kid, grandpa let us drink milk in a cup while he milked the cow. now milk is pasteurized, homogenized, 2 percent or 1 percent butter fat and skim. Butter is salted or unsalted. JANUARY 2012 • SENIOR LIFE

John Trieste knows the best Florida destinations On January 27, at the Great American Outdoor Adventure Day, John Trieste will give a free presentation on Florida day trips. Since 2005, he has been writing a monthly column for Senior Life. He introduces readers to inexpensive, educational and fun excursions that can be made in a day or two. Trieste said that he came up with the idea for his column because he and his late wife had many friends and relatives from the New york area who visited the Central Florida theme parks before stopping in to see them at their beachside condo. “In the course of conversation,” Trieste said, “they would mention they spent up to $5,000 on one week’s vacation for a family of four or five. In many cases this was at least one year’s savings for these folks.” Always frugal, he said that he envisioned more lucrative ways to enjoy Florida. “I’m not against theme parks but they are a very expensive vacation for the typical family.” John and Adele Trieste often took friends throughout the state to discover other wonderful educational, family-orientated and inexpensive destinations. Senior Life has published more than 70 of his destinations, which can be made in a single day. He said that his favorite day trip was from Route 192 beachside, south on A1A to Vero Beach. He estimates the average day trip costs less than $30 per person for a full day, including lunch and dinner. According to Trieste, the most interesting destination he has visited is the Florida Carriage and Horse Museum in Weirsdale, Fla., with more than 160 fully restored, historical European and American carriages. Trieste lived his entire life in New york City before retiring to Florida to be near his daughter and granddaughters. After a stint in the Army, he had a lifetime career as a Trade Printer in the commercial printing industry. He is active within AARP, the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce, the New york State Club and several nonprofit organizations. To learn more about the many inexpensive and educational destinations, visit John Trieste on Friday, Jan. 27 at 12:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Viera. For more information, call 321-242-1235.

Mobility Help my fellow columnist on this page recently wrote a column entitled mobility. he referred to doing what we can to stay fit as we age so we won’t have as much trouble getting around, as many seniors do. he mentioned places where mobility-deprived seniors can find transportation help. since I’ve been deeply involved in doing just that for more than five years, I thought it might be of value to expand on this information. at the same time, let me add that there are never enough drivers for all the needs in Brevard County, so people willing to spend some time volunteering who, are lucky enough to be mobile and get behind the wheel of a car, might be interested in the other side of the coin. the one I’m very involved with is senior transerve, under the auspices of Community services Council (soon to become aging matters). any senior more than 60 years of age who cannot drive, is eligible to become a client. to do so, call 321-639-4868 ext. 282. Our coordinator will tell you more and take your information. the nice thing about senior transerve is that it doesn’t limit requests to just medical appointments and shopping. Our drivers will take you almost anywhere you’d like to go within Brevard for any reason—when we have enough drivers that is. the other services deal mainly with medical and dental appointments or going to the market. some offer more physical help than senior transerve offers. Calling volunteers in motion (vIm) at 321-635-7999 is your start-

ing point for this service, which I believe is a no-cost service, as is senior transerve. DonaLucy tions are accepted. Kline then there is the need-a-ride program supported by space Coast Center for Independent Living. they can be reached at 321806-3199. they do have nominal fees but also offer more physical help. the sCat bus service that we all are aware of is difficult for seniors if there is no bus station close by, but they offer a curb service by request called paratransit. You can be picked up at the curb by your home and dropped off at the curb of your destination. the fee is $1.25 each way. for more information, call 321-633-1878. even if you don’t need something right now, it’s a good idea to inquire into these services and keep the information handy for when the time might come that you need help as each has different requirements and schedules. not being able to drive in a community that doesn’t have the greatest public transportation is difficult, but knowing what’s out there is helpful. even more helpful would be if those reading this column and do drive would seriously consider volunteering. the time and hours are completely your choice and flexible. some drivers drive one client once a week, others drive several times, several clients. the volunteer makes his/her own plan.

rebecca powers captivates attention. she dazzled everyone during her childhood growing up in georgia. at the age of 19, she heard an ad on the radio for the first hawaiian tropics modeling contest and knew she had to try out, not only for a trip to new York, but to expand her life and achieve her goals. she charmed the judges and won the contest. In her twenties, she traveled the u.s. and the Caribbean mesmerizing photographers while representing the surfing industry. “It totally changed my life. It made the course of all things possible that I was wanting to attain and goes to show you that if you have a dream, dream big because you’ll manifest it. now, the rockledge boomer aims to magnetize locals with health advice and trendy wellness bracelets while showing boomers that age is just a number. “I want people to know that they don’t have to be tired or lack energy all day no matter what age they are, powers said. “there’s a way you can change that without medication. Before moving to florida, she lived a glamorous life in California that lead to her life’s passion. she used her modeling background to open a health restaurant which allowed her time to enjoy being a mother to her now 14-year-old daughter. through the restaurant, she became fas-

I want people to know what this bracelet can do and if you don’t have one, a penny in your shoe does the same thing. It can help anyone; especially seniors because we lose our balance as we get older. and instantly you get grounded and get your balance back. “I stay very active — like any 20 year old — and I look years younger than I am, powers said. “I want to be the model because I want people to know that any boomer can have my energy and lifestyle. agency changes name because aging matters By Linda WiGGinS

Industry insiders know the Community services Council is a key player in community services for seniors, providing meals on Wheels, retired senior volunteers through the rsvp program and support services to help elders age-out in their own homes as long as possible. With a name change to aging matters in Brevard, the current and future wave of boomers-turned-seniors will be able to find services for themselves and their aging parents with the click of a mouse. “We have family members inquiring from the north about services locally for their aging loved ones, and the way they do this today is to use … Internet search engines,” said Cindy flachmeier, executive director of the agency. “With nothing in our name that indicates what we do, we launched a process to select a new name, and that’s how we came up with aging matters. aging well does matter, and we are the place to come for all matters regarding aging.” the name change is part of a rebranding campaign launched by flachmeier’s predecessor, William “Bill” hoskinson. With his retirement approaching, he and a search committee hand-picked his replacement because of flachmeier’s success in keeping the salvation army’s domestic violence shelter and program high profile under her leadership. hoskinson stayed aboard as a consultant for a year to help flachmeier settle in, and then passed away shortly afterward, in may of 2009 at age 67. Industry insiders frequently remark that — in accordance with his agency’s mission — it was as if he were tending to arrangements for the end of his life, and the future of the agency he led for 30 years. aging matters will roll out its rebranding campaign in the coming months, peaking with its annual passport to Wines around the World fundraiser april 21. for more information on services or volunteer opportunities, call 321-6398770 or go to agingmattersBrevard.org.

the Canaveral Lighthouse: a not so hidden gem By roSemary H. Lynn

for many people the Canaveral Lighthouse is an elusive structure that can only be seen from afar. But tours of the lighthouse are available two to three times a week by reservation only. the lighthouse, located on property owned by Canaveral air force station, can only be accessed with permission. the tour is well worth your time whether you are a local or a visitor. It affords a close-up look into the history of this magnificent structure. the original lighthouse was 65 feet tall. Built in 1847, it was constructed entirely of brick. It was later torn down to make way for a taller lighthouse which would better serve passing vessels in the atlantic Ocean. the new lighthouse stood 160 feet with a light beam shining 22 miles out to sea. It was built entirely of steel with a brick lining. It was decided that the encroaching sea may damage the lighthouse and a plan was implemented to move the steel and brick structure back eighty feet. By 1894, it was relocated to where it stands today by utilizing a rail and mule team. this move took eight months to complete. the interior of the lighthouse contains two large rooms. One is on the first floor and the other is on the second floor. these were used as offices for the keeper and his staff.

If your association’s fiscal year coincides with the calendar, I hope you have already started the budget process. Being proactive will result in a thorough document and peace of mind. If you're working with a management company, they should prepare the first draft. Whether management company or board, the president may want to form a committee. three to five homeowners will lighten the burden on the board and help residents understand where and why their fees are spent. Committee members may each want to concentrate on certain parts of the budget, choosing areas that might be of special interest to them or in which they have particular expertise. astute associations and managers will start with a walk-through of the common areas. take note of areas that need attention or that allow for budget paring. Check the physical condition of all amenities. have the trees been trimmed recently? should hedges or trees be replaced? each community will have unique concerns and a good manager will assist in pointing them out. next you will probably want to review the last two or three years’ financial statements. some will want to set up a grid chart showing budget categories and highlighting items that seem higher or lower than normal, then consider the association's goals. Do you want to keep the assessment the same or raise it? Lowering it is normally not a good idea. should budget designations be added, modified or deleted? the capital reserves adequate week, but are the Palm Bay Old Bastards and properly reserveofitems prefer to meet funded? the last Sunday be scrutinized in the same manner theshould month. as expense Legaltodetails also must “We keep items. bookwork a minimum, be considered. property managers are not said Bill Hinkel, Archbastard for the attorneys, but they are required to keep Patrick group. abreast of budget requirements. Covenant Life fellowship is growing and planning for the future While discussing a holiday cookie exchange, toy drive and parade, pastor Jamie mcIlwain projected forward to 2012 and told his Covenant Life 65-member congregation,“and by the way, we have our eyes on five acres of land in port st. John to build a larger church!” a larger church, to the preacher originally from alabama, would ideally seat about 2,000 each sunday and someday include more acreage on which the church would build an assisted living facility run by members who would “take care of the older folks,” for whom mcIlwain has always had a penchant. “my dad was 47 when I was born. I grew up watching older people and they always took care of each other.” mcIlwain said he always knew that his life would be a bit different than most his age. “When I drank or partied as a youth, I just knew I didn’t fit in.” mcIlwain married angie, a minister’s daughter, in 1990. “I was praying about being a minister,” he said. “I was already mopping floors, cutting the grass and working with the children at Overcoming faith ministries in robertsdale, ala. when I was 26

Humphrey after moving to Brevard, they held their first service in a home with three members along with their family. the numbers grew from five to 15. from there, they worshiped in a conference room at a holiday Inn and then a storefront building. they moved to the current location about three years ago. this is their first location as senior pastors. “pastor Jamie teaches us the basics and how to live, treat our neighbors and each other,” said Covenant Life member ruth Crowe. “he asks us to study at home and never forget to thank god for always being with us. he laughs with us, cries with us. he is part of us, we are his family and we love him.” Covenant Life fellowship is located at 4725 fay Blvd., port st. 65 candles means money in Brevard By Linda WiGGinS

Boomers received a gift in 2011. as the first boomers celebrated their 65th birthday, they started collecting social security checks. this has pushed the amount of these revenues to its highest point in history in Brevard, with its districts 15 and 24 in the top five of the top u.s. Congressional Districts in constituents receiving checks. this vital economic resource is an entitlement, but it is not welfare, according to District 15 Congressman Bill posey, who celebrated his 65th birthday in December. “You worked all your life to earn it, and now you are entitled to it,” he said. “more than 130,000 Brevardians — nearly 40 percent of households — now depend on it to help meet their needs.” the social security administration refers to the people born between 1946 and 1964 as the baby boomer generation. soldiers returning home from their service at the end of World War II started having families and the united states experienced a dramatic increase in births. During that period, the nation experienced good economic times and the increase

Senior Life Linda Wiggins

L.A. Davis opens a gag gift for her 65th birthday, a mock Social Security check. in births sparked a demand for more products. that demand created the need for more jobs — people were needed to make all these new products, and now these new workers are retiring. according to posey spokesman george Cecala, the $4 billion retirees brought into Brevard last year was about twice the total that the space program brought into the county through wages, contracts and purchases. Because every dollar spent by retirees generates jobs and other spending, the total economic impact of retirees in the county

likely accounts for nearly $6 billion of the $14.5 billion of annual economic activity here. Beyond the income, seniors depend on medicare for health care insurance, generating still more economic activity in the local health care industry. “It was a relief to finally have good health insurance and not have to pay a mint for it,” said estate liquidator L.a. Davis, who has long been selfemployed and used her medicare benefits for the first time in 2011. “I feel like a terrible weight is lifted and that I will be able to enjoy the rest of my life.” SL

painter, songwriter join together as volunteers for the arts Dear Gramma

By GeorGe WHite

If you’ve been involved in or have seen the arts in south Brevard, chances are that Indian harbour Beach retirees Bobby and Dorothy rhines had something to do with it. Originally from peoria, Ill., the rhines have been Brevard County residents since 1996. Bobby rhines, from virginia, has been the head usher at melbourne auditorium for 10 years, helping out with seating 900 to 1,500 people during a variety of programs including performances by the melbourne municipal Band. “I went to a concert one time and they asked me if I wanted to become an usher and I’ve done it ever since. I did it five times this month, and every performance was free,” he said. Dorothy rhines is a talented painter and member of the art and antique gallery in the eau gallie section of melbourne. she was involved in the creation of the eau gallie arts District’s (egaD) popular first friday events. “I’ve always painted and drawn and was an interior designer for 27 years. some started asking if I would do paintings for their homes so I started doing paintings for my customers in Illinois,” she said. Once in Brevard, she attended Brevard Community College to learn more about her art. “I like it all but I mostly do oils and watercolors and I think doing both helps,” she said. While she is pleased with the progress of the redevelopment of the eau gallie area, she still believes the arts district, and its many galleries, could be helped through the creation of a welcome center on highland avenue. the couple, and their love of all things artistic, join together as volunteer camera operators for fOCus at Brighthouse, “arts in Brevard Co.” “I love it and have a great time meeting all the people because all of us are artists,” she said. the show appears on Brighthouse Channel 49 at 8 p.m. mondays, 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, and 6:30 p.m. thursdays. Bobby rhines’ other interests include songwriting and being a member of a local inventor’s club helping fledgling inventors achieve patents for their ideas. Dorothy rhines also enjoys singing karaoke.

Dear Gramma: I live near a woman who has many grandchildren. this gramma claims she loves them and would do anything for them. however, she rides a motor scooter about town without any safety protection. many advise her to wear a helmet but she doesn’t. I’m afraid someday she will pay with her life. What advice would you give this person? perplexed Dear perplexed: We can only advise others, not force them to do what is best for their own well-being. perhaps family members or a close friend can appeal to her grandmotherly role of being a good role model for her grandchildren, doing what is legal and safe, instead of risky. that would start the new year off great for everyone. they can also remind her that not wearing a helmet can lead to her being arrested or killed. Both would devastate her loved ones. Don’t give up. gramma Holly Fox Vellekoop, MSN, is the author of “How to Help When Parents Grieve” and “STONE HAVEN: Murder Along the River.” A retired Penn State University clinical instructor with six grandchildren, Vellekoop has a Master of Science degree in nursing. Jim schroeder of Indialantic loves running. so he, John pyle of sarasota and Bradford Lombardi of stuart—also ultra marathoners—will run 3,200 miles, from san francisco to key West, in the patriot run across america. “this entire adventure is the brainchild of John pyle. he recruited me and it took off from there,” said schroeder, a research scientist for harris Corporation. the three athletes, along with six other floridians, are members of the patriot trust, a non-profit organization, which has one primary purpose: to aid those men and women that have served this great country. Working together with organizations that share similar passions, the patriot trust creates strong bonds with groups such as the Wounded Warrior project and the Challenged athletes foundation (Caf) . the patriot run across america is a fundraiser for both the Wounded Warrior project, whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors, and the Caf, which recognizes the athletic greatness inherent in all people with physical challenges and supports their athletic endeavors by providing unparalleled sports opportunities that lead to success in sports—and in life. the three ultra marathoners will begin their journey on march 1, 2012 and run 35 to 50 miles per day for the following 80 days. they have already begun training for the event, with schroeder planning to gradually increase his mileage to 100 miles of running on paved roads each week. “my job is laying out the course,” schroeder said.

“We’ll run down highway 1 as far as Los angeles and head east through arizona, new mexico, texas, Louisiana, alabama, and then on to south florida, where we’ll coordinate the last 100 miles of the run with the keys 100 race. a professional crew will help the runners achieve their goal. “We need dedicated people. Crewing is hard. It’s not fun. You’re taking care of three exhausted guys and not getting any limelight,” schroeder said. schroeder hopes that the run will attract local interest along the roadways of america. “I would love it if people would join us for a week to run with us, or even a day.” for more information or to donate, visit the site: thepatriottrust.us. SALUTE

pre-World War II vet harry Irving celebrates his first century By maria SonnenBerG

harry Irving’s wife, Lillian, credits his longevity to his philosophy of life. “he loves the Lord,” she said.“he has such wonderful faith.” the Irvings attend Calvary Chapel in West melbourne, where the congregation of 2,000 recently celebrated harry’s 100th birthday. Born in Yarmouth, maine, Irving served his country in the army even before the start of World War II. “I worked in a maine shipyard helping with the electrical equipment in destroyers,” he said. Like millions of servicemen, Irving began a new life after his military stint. for him, it was working at a sears, roebuck and Company in new england, where he sold sewing machines. It might have been there that Irving developed a talent for sewing, an attribute Lillian found very endearing. By 1972, Irving had retired to Lake Washington, doing an odd job here and there. When harry’s first wife passed away, he thought he would never remarry. so, too, did Lillian, who had lost her first husband, norman. “norman and I got married a month after pearl harbor,” she said. Lillian met norman at church. she would discover many years later that history would repeat itself with harry. “I used to pray to the Lord to help me meet the right person,” harry said.

Crowds of children and adults lined u.s. highway 1 long before the titusville Christmas parade began at 6 p.m. on December 10, 2011. excitement filled the air. they appeared eager to watch friends, relatives and strangers marching or riding past. When floats, lights, bands, music and even a bubble machine making simulated snow approached, they were well rewarded for arriving early to get a good view. Cheers, waves and smiles erupted when floats and marchers passed by the spectators. seeing elves, candy canes, wreaths and other holiday decorations brought out the Christmas spirit. the music was cheery and exciting. many people shouted, “merry Christmas! the people in the parade stopped for pictures with the children as they went by. adding to the excitement was a cannon that went off as people warned, “Cover your ears! before the explosion occurred. the City of titusville hosts a Christmas parade every year. this year’s parade was held on friday, Dec. 9 with movies as its theme. for more information, call 321-3835775. recycled kitchen countertops becoming popular

Countertops now come in all types of survaces. Recycled materials are a popular way to go green. By martHa maSieLLo

If the new year inspires you to update your kitchen, check into which products are beautiful, sustainable and affordable. many do-it-yourselfers and contractors are heading toward greener choices to make a positive difference. product prices range from in $30 to $90 per square foot. recycled glass countertops divert used glass from the waste stream. Colorful recycled glass is mixed into a cement, concrete or resin base. the cement is mixed with fly ash, a waste product of coal burning that would otherwise end up in landfills. end-grain bamboo countertops are chopping blocks made of slender rectangles of end-grain bamboo glued into panels, usually an inch and a half thick. available in natural or brown, bamboo is the perfect substitute for wood because its fast growth makes it more renewable. In addition, low off-gassing glues don't harm indoor air quality. the product can be cut using standard woodworking tools. recycled paper kitchen countertops are made with recycled paper prepared in a resin base and available in thicknesses ranging from one-quarter to two inches .available in several colors,

these countertops are heat and stain resistant. the product uses post-consumer recycled paper certified by the forest stewardship Council with non-petroleum, formaldehyde-free resins, some made from cashew nut shell liquid. standard woodworking tools can be used to cut and shape it. sustainable wood kitchen countertops are butcher-block counters that may originate from reclaimed or recycled lumber while others come from lesser-known tree species. Butcher blocks can be made from slender lengths or end-grain blocks. using reclaimed wood reduces the need for harvesting new trees. recycled oldgrowth lumber often has tighter grain and a better quality. recycled aluminum kitchen countertops are made of recycled aluminum to make countertop-depth pieces up to 3 feet wide with built-in front lip and backsplash. One manufacturer makes a solid-surface material containing postindustrial scrap aluminum in a polymeric resin. metal products are finished with reusable abrasives and recirculated water. the clear-coat finish is food-safe and nontoxic. for further information on these products, research eco-friendlykitchen-counters online or in your library for more details. On friday, feb. 10, the annual Boomer Senior Guide will make its sixth appearance in Brevard County. the award-winning publication will be launched at the second annual Boomer senior expo, which will be held at the valiant air Command Warbird museum in titusville, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Besides the essential information the guide holds, it is filled with photos of local seniors and boomers who strutted their stuff for the camera in the name of fun and to dress up, of course. “not in my wildest dreams did I think I would have photos taken of me for something like this,” said nancy Conklin. “I tagged along on another photo shoot and thought it was so exciting and when asked to do the same, it was more than I had ever thought of.” Conklin didn’t know where to start for wardrobe. unlike professional runway models, she had to do the choosing herself, and finally found something perfect for the occasion, in her own closet. “I had happened to have a top that I had

gotten as a gift last year, so I thought it would be just right,” Conklin said. “as for the vintage hat to fit the 1940s theme, I don’t usually wear hats, so it was hard, but I was able to find one and it made the entire shoot. I’m having more fun now than I ever did when I was younger.” Conklin wasn’t alone in modeling for the guide. Dozens of other local models, some for the first time, applied for consideration. her friend eugene snook was actually the one who had invited Conklin and he said that he had just as much enjoyment as she did and had an interesting quest to find the perfect wardrobe. “I’m really a ham at heart and the idea to dress up as an air force serviceman and a person from the sixties was really enjoyable,” snook said. “I borrowed the air force uniform. I was an army man, so I had to adjust to the inverted stripes, and then I was able to find the tie-dyed shirt at goodwill. It all worked out well with a little searching.” for more information on the expo or the Boomer Senior Guide, call 321-242-1235. SL

remembering ponce de Leon’s landing in florida By darreLL WoeHLer

florida was discovered in 1513 when Juan ponce de Leon, sailing from a port in puerto rico, landed very near melbourne Beach, fla. and to commemorate that fact, numerous celebrations are being planned throughout the state, but perhaps none more ambitious than right here on the space Coast. united third Bridge, Inc., under president samuel Lopez and the florida puerto rican hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Inc., has formed the royal Order of Don Juan ponce de Leon historical v Centennial 1513, melbourne Beach, Brevard County, florida. Quite a title, but this is quite an undertaking. In conjunction with this, and to promote the 2013 activities, the Committee was able to coordinate the recent visit of the mayor and his wife of the hometown birthplace of Don Juan ponce de Leon in spain. the honorable santiago Baeza Benavides and his wife, maria nuria rodriguez recently made a whirlwind tour of the space Coast. they visited the commission chambers at the Brevard County government Center in viera, when a resolution was presented showing that the time of nov. 21 through 30, 2011, was dedicated in honor of the mayor and thanking him for his visit to Brevard County. melbourne Beach’s mayor tom Davis, police Chief Dan Duncan and noted local historian ann Downing provided a tour of the town on nov. 22, including the town business complex.

they also visited the ponce de Leon Landing park, south of the town complex of melbourne Beach, where, most historians believe, to be very near the 1513 first landing of Juan ponce de Leon. mayor Davis presented the key to the City of melbourne Beach to mayor santiago at the government Center in viera on nov. 28 and various lunches and other site visits were also conducted, including a Coast guard tour of port Canaveral. the mayor’s visit is preliminary to a hoped-for visit by the king and Queen of spain during the 2013 festivities. the state of florida’s designation of this event is called viva florida 500 and is being promoted by the state through various government agencies, including the governor’s Office of tourism, trade and economic Development and the florida humanities Council. the local committee has been meeting for more than 15 months and involves numerous sub-committees and their coordination with a large number of local and state government agencies as well as various hispanic and other committees from counties throughout florida. In addition to plans to construct a multicultural education building at ponce de Leon park on melbourne Beach are plans to erect a large statue of Juan ponce de Leon. the park is located at 4005 hwy. a1a in melbourne Beach. for more information, call 321-637-5732. Frank Thomas, Melbourne Beach historian, in front of the original post office. By GeorGe WHite finding historical sites and homes in melbourne Beach is as easy as a walk in the park. Just ask melbourne Beach historian frank thomas, who has written a book on the history of the town with roots back to 1888. thomas, a former english teacher at melbourne high school and later Brevard Community College, leads a tour of melbourne Beach each new Year’s Day. But he doesn’t have far to walk, as most of the sites are located around ryckman park. “It was purely by accident that it (melbourne Beach) was left behind. nobody paid much attention to it because a1a used to end here. the road south to sebastian Inlet was only shelled in 1955 and there was no bridge across to Indian river County until 1965, he said. town founder rufus Beaujean moved his family to melbourne Beach in 1889 and built his first home the same year. he built the chapel in 1891-1892 and his second home, still located at 905 riverside Dr., in 1894. Both are still standing and included on the tour. thomas’ walking tour begins at the pier, followed by a peek at a 12-inch artesian well located nearby that once was used to generate electricity, according to thomas. By 1981, town fathers had established a u.s. post Office and melbourne Beach was up and running. that post office was moved to the southern portion of ryckman park. thomas said that the ryckman house, also located in the park, was built in 1890 when the town was known for agriculture, consisting mostly of pineapples. “It was a tough existence out here, he said. thomas’ popular walking tour draws more than 100 people some years, which caused him to start using amplification to be heard by the crowd. “What’s great about melbourne Beach history is that it’s all contained in a small area, he said. Books by thomas on the town’s history are for sale at town hall, and the town’s history center. thomas is available to give the tour to groups of 12 or more. for more information, call 321-7232655. senseis teach the students way of life By eLLen CommonS-HarreLL

Cindy and ken Onimus, of titusville, have made martial arts their way of life and a way to glorify god. they opened their own school after studying with many great instructors for more than 13 years and call it ai shen Do, pronounced I shin Dough. this means ai (Joining) shen (term of god/Christianity) Do (Way). their mutual interest in karate began when their 8-year-old son was enrolled to study for fun and something to do under the guidance of master John Quest. as parents, they were encouraged to train with their son but never knew it would be-

Because of a strong interest in their students’ overall education, the senseis, or teachers, encourage their students to strive for better than average grades in school. they teach manners as well as respect for others and awareness, so their students can better protect themselves and others. the forms of karate taught provide insight into making students more productive in life.
