Assistant City Clerk Cathy Baker said in the 28 years she’s worked for Melbourne, there’s been no effort to have welcome signs erected that commemorate the city as Morrison’s birthplace. “I don’t think there’s ever been anyone who stepped up” to request that the city put up signs honoring the controversial singer-songwriter, Baker said.

In Paris, the gravesite of rock icon Jim Morrison in Père Lachaise Cemetery is one of the City of Lights’ most popular tourist destinations. In Melbourne, the hospital where the charismatic front man of 1960s super group The Doors was born and the modest home where Morrison spent his early childhood go largely unnoticed. This month 20 years ago, thousands of Brevard residents came together in the newborn community of Viera to build the Brevard Zoo. Continued community support has grown our zoo into one of the most acclaimed attractions in the zoological community, despite its modest size and animal variety. It leads animal and environmental conservation efforts worldwide with diverse programs on board, for many species beyond those in current or planned exhibits. Two such vital species are the human and the oyster. The zoo earns high acclaim for its efforts to encourage Brevardians to create and plant oyster mats around the shores of the Indian River Lagoon to clean the water of pollutants, restore its once thriving ecosystem and boost its bounty to the local economy. See page 34 to learn about Brevard County’s newest residents debuting at the zoo’s Saturday, March 15 double-decade celebration. The meerkats are adorably curious and social critters. March is a huge month in Brevard every year, but this year in particular. Spring training at Space Coast Stadium is a time when our favorite teams converge to hone and highlight the finest batting, pitching and fielding talent. In short, all of the teams in the North from which we or our families hailed before settling in Brevard will be close enough to touch. The Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees or Mets, Washington Nationals or other childhood favorites in the National League’s East Division, or perhaps the Miami Marlins. See page 35 for the dates your favorites come up to bat. We know where the Sullivan-Stephens family will be March 1 (see Grandparents Rock! page 17).

Come Feb.1 the poodle skirt, a symbol of the 1950s Americana style and flare, will hit the Space Coast as the annual Boomer Senior Expo kicks off. Guests, stepping into The Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum in Titusville will feel as if they’ve traveled back to the days of “Grease,” “Happy Days” or simply their teenage years. The museum will transform into a 1950s bash where poodle skits will be as abundant as they were in the days when they first adorned the waists of school girls. To fully understand what was considered one of the most iconic fashion pieces of the decade is to first understand its history. The skirt was introduced in 1947 after Juli Lynne Charlot, a young actress and designer, created the stylish bottom at home. She cut a hole in the middle of a large circle of of felt — an excess of fabric that was not popular during World War II or the Great Depression — large enough for her waist, the skirt reaching just below the knee. She wore it to a holiday party in Los Angeles. As time moved forward, so did the skirt. It was first made in bright girly colors, like pink with crinoline, a stiff fabric underneath to support and shape the piece.

And while we’re on the topic, I wish to express my personal gratitude to the Brevard Zoo for it’s partnership with Senior Life parent Bluewater Creative Group in the first hosting of the 2014 Boomer Guide Expo Feb. 7. Billed as the Senior Safari & Wellness Walkabout, it was a huge mutual success and a treat for all of our readers 55 and over who enjoyed free zoo entry and a day of special events. And speaking of the Boomer Guide, you’ll find your own copy tucked inside this issue. The 2013 award-winning collection of clubs, services and adventures won a Silver Addy at the 2014 American Advertising Federation — Space Coast “Addy” Awards Feb. 22, adding to its mantle of awards.

JoAnne and David McDonald attribute the blossoming of their new lives in Brevard County to the Boomer Guide. by Rae Botsford

“The Boomer Guide literally changed our life,” said JoAnne McDonald, wife of 86-year-old polio survivor David McDonald. They were wintering in Brevard to avoid the Ohio snow about five years ago when JoAnne discovered the publication. “I had to use the laundry room in our facility, and it happened to have a Boomer Guide in there, so I picked it up.” Flipping through it, she noticed an entry among the listed organizations for the Post-Polio Support Group of Brevard. David McDonald was the second documented victim of polio in Scotland, and he finds Florida to be very wheelchair-friendly. When the McDonalds permanently moved to Brevard less than two years later, they joined that support group. On a recommendation from someone there, the couple found a home in Indian River Colony Club, and that’s where they’ve lived for almost four years. “If it weren’t for that article, I never would have even thought to look for a post-polio support group. David has just blossomed because of it.” JoAnne McDonald is now the president of that group, an upbeat band that meets every other month. They also like to contribute to the American Legion at Christmastime, and they use the Boomer Guide to find the nearest one. The McDonalds recommend the guide, especially to people who are new to the area. “All the activities you have in there, and the way it’s documented – it’s amazing,” JoAnne said. “And the fact that it’s free! It’s a free magazine, that’s unbelievable.” SL

Habitat’s Strawberry Festival returns to Wickham Park by Rae Botsford The Strawberry Festival returns for its 26th year on March 15 and 16, hosted by Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County. The festival will be at Wickham Park Pavilion, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. Admission is free and all proceeds from festival events benefit Habitat for Humanity’s mission to provide “simple, decent, affordable housing” for families in need. “My goal is always $250,000. We have not done that,” said Charlotte Hutchinson, vice president of Habitat for Humanity. “I don’t know if we’re gonna come close this year, but we’re gonna try.” Hutchinson first got involved with Habitat about nine years ago as a volunteer. “I always liked giving back to the community, and the president and CEO here was a friend of mine and asked me to come out and help with the Strawberry Festival. That’s how I got started.” The strawberries come fresh from a dedicated Plant City field. Festival attendees can enjoy them plain or served in a variety of ways, including strawberry shortcake, strawberry smoothies and as toppings at the pancake breakfast. But there’s much more to the Strawberry Festival than its namesake fruit. New to the festival this year is a live auction of fine furniture from Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. A 340foot zip line will be added between the Kids’ Korner and the arts and crafts section. And if the children in your life want an early taste of baseball season, they can meet Brevard Manatees mascot Manny the Manatee from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Second annual Brevard Wildlife Corridor Expedition

The Brevard Wildlife Corridor Expedition was inspired by the Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition project that in 2012 traveled 1,000 miles in 100 days following the path of the Florida Black Bear. The second annual Brevard expedition presented by the Brevard Nature Alliance (BNA), will be an 11-day moving festival featuring nature-based field trips and outdoor activities appealing to a wide range of interests, ages, and fitness levels. The April 3 through 13 Expedition Brevard will cover the county from north to south. The BNA is partnering with the Environmentally Endangered Lands Program to offer activity categories which include: hikes, nature-based field trips, paddling, airboat and pontoon boating, off-road cycling, horseback riding, photography workshops, visits to historical sites, environmental education, geo-caching, horseback riding, fresh and salt water fishing workshops and social events. Passing the Boomer baton

By linda wiggins

Marilyn Monroe has stepped down to make way for Marion Ravenwood. The glossy cover for the 2014 Boomer Guide features the fan-favorite girlfriend of Indiana Jones facing danger and adventure alongside her man, portrayed by girlfriend-boyfriend team Carmen Vastola and Gerry Dillon. The real-life adventurers have a hard act to follow. Bridget Brown as Marilyn struck such a perfect pose for award-winning cover photographer Keith Betterley that the awards are still rolling in. Most recently, the 2013 cover won a Silver Addy from the American Advertising Federation – Space Coast “Addy” Awards Feb. 22. It won first place for best cover photo from the North American Mature Publishers Association, as well as best overall use of photography. Vastola and Dillon were thrilled to be selected from among more than 20 models in the 2014 Boomer Guide for the cover, and if need be, are ready to represent the crown all year.

“We just couldn’t believe it. I feel so special,” Vastola said. She already gets endless comments on her cover girl turn as a busy ambassador at the Viera Discovery Center. It helps that it is a distribution point for the publication. Brown has no complaints. “I loved the experience,” Brown said. She was born in 1960 at the height of Monroe’s popularity and remains a big fan of the star and the outspoken honesty behind the beauty. “It really meant a lot to me to have had such a personal connection to an icon who means so much to me.” Pick up additional copies of the Boomer Guide, inserted in this issue, at the Senior Life offices, 7630 N. Wickham Rd., #105, in Viera, or at the Viera Discovery Center, 7350 Shoppes Dr., #103, or call 321-242-1235. SL SENIOR LIFE Linda Wiggins

The new local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter in Melbourne Beach respects local tradition. John Barry, who fought and won the last naval battle during the American Revolution off the coast of what eventually became Cape Canaveral, will be the namesake for the new chapter. Local DAR and Sons of the American Revolution chapters have donated a monument to honor Barry. A celebration to honor the American hero

Boomer spells karma K-B-B

By Linda Wiggins Baby boomer Tony Sasso didn’t always live for others. Quite the opposite for the selftitled community activist. “Like the star of the hit comedy 'My Name is Earl,' I have been working to improve my karma. I was such a hellion as a kid, with a single mom who worked nights. Part of it was guilt, but a lot of it was my two sons. Marriage changes you, of course, but then there is another generation. All of that became more important. I wanted to be able to look them in the eye 10 years from now and say, ‘I did what I could.’” As the executive director of Keep Brevard Beautiful, “what he can do” is significant. The nonprofit works with volunteers, with civic groups and government agencies to clean up litter and address other environmental concerns. At 18 months on the job, he is overseeing a rebranding effort to “make sure the mission survives the next 30 years.” Shortening the name to KBB will help endear the effort to the text generation. Changing the colors to bold blue and sand will set it apart from all the other environmental groups that rely on aqua blue and green to

relay a message, he said. Adding more board members will increase KBB’s financial and influential reach. Spending time in elected office as a Cocoa Beach city commissioner from 2000 to 2006 and as a District 32 Florida house representative gave him access to powerful friends

who help him with his cause. “I’m so lucky to meet such nice people in leadership positions in their cities and counties that have enabled me to do a lot of good for the community in my capacity at KBB,” he said. Will he seek office in the future? “Never say never.” In addition to helping Brevard, he helps his predecessor Larry Webber in his new position as director of Keep Florida Beautiful. In his spare time, when there is any, he heads up the Cocoa Beach Surf Museum. Flipping through a copy of Mad magazine — yes, he still reads it and loves it, and doesn’t care who knows it — he pondered his personal mission. “Keep surfing.

Stay healthy. Life is good.” For more information on KBB, go to the Keep Brevard Beautiful Facebook page or call 321-631-0501. SL

The Casements, Ormond Beach

Looking for something different in a day trip when entertaining your out-of-town guests or family, I strongly suggest visiting The Casements in nearby Ormond Beach. The Casements, for a tycoon, was a modest, understated, and escape winter home of John D. Rockefeller. Rockefeller was the founder of Standard Oil Co. and became in a short time one of the richest men in the country. Looking for an escape from the harsh northern winters, Rockefeller vacationed for a number of years at the luxurious Ormond Hotel located on the banks of the Halifax River. In 1992, the Ormond Hotel was torn down and replaced by a lavish condo. It was 1914 when Rockefeller rented an entire floor at the Ormond Hotel for his staff and himself. Looking for a home of his own, he then purchased the recently built estate right across the street from the Ormond Hotel on the river called The Casements. Rockefeller lived in The Casements during the winters until his death at the age of 97. Rockefeller’s family, who were used to lavish living, had no interest in the winter home. It was sold to a Prep School, then a rest home, and a hotel annex, and finally closed. It was unoccupied for many years and deteriorated until it was purchased by the city of Ormond Beach. The city fathers spent more than a million dollars restoring The Casements to bring it back to its glory days. Today, the Casements gardens are an authentic restoration of a two–acre garden facing the Halifax riverfront. The gardens have citrus trees, a promenade, streams and small bridges and a variety of seasonal flowers blooming during the year. Inside the building, docents will guide you through the many rooms and entertaining areas in the restored home. Today, the Casements serve as

Guidebooks As we advance in years, there are always the experts who gather life lessons, conduct research and write guide books loaded with ideas on how to live a long life. Most of us could write our own book about what we have learned about living. Recently, “A Short Guide To a Long Life” has been written by Dr. David B. Agus, a leading cancer doctor. He has been making the talk show circuit promoting his book that has been on the New York Times best seller list. This is evidence that people want some new ideas. In many cases, old ideas are repackaged and become new hit books. There are 65 rules included in the “Short Guide” including: get a flu shot, drink red wine, drink coffee with caffeine, exercise for 15 minutes to increase your heart rate, never skip breakfast, buy a pooch, get naked and avoid juicing — eat real food. It is fun to read and provides helpful advice. My library has a lot of books on how to live a long life. In 1983, comedian George Burns wrote “How to Live to be 100 or More,” and he did. He is pictured on the front cover in a jogging suit holding a barbell with one hand and a cigar in the other. He gives all kinds of practical advice with a comic overtone. His dear friend Bob Hope lived to age 100, but left guidebooks to others. A much more serious book is “100 Ways to Live to 100” by Charles B. Inlander and Marie Hodge. This 1992 edition gets serious about physical fitness. It claims to be “the first complete guide to living

Challenges of Living to Age 100 Ed Baranowski a long and productive life.” This guide covers nutrition, exercise, heredity, safety, environment, medical care, sound body and sound mind matters. We have all heard this before from our doctors. With more focus on the spiritual side, Joan Chittister wrote “The Gift of Years,” a guide for growing older gracefully. Inspirational reflections and insights are covered in 40 sections. The guide downplays regrets and accents the rewards of a mature life. As you look ahead, Craig Hamilton-Parker wrote the guide, “What to Do When You are Dead.” This serious but heavenly guide provides instruction on living better in the afterlife. For those who may fear death, Craig prepares them for the unspeakably glorious eternity. What is your guidebook? SL Ed Baranowski is president of Topics Unlimited, a Melbournebased education, seminar and consulting firm. You can reach him at topicsed@aol.com.

Funny thing is… I need a lot more explanation about this game called golf. If people golf to relax, why are most golfers more upset at the end of the game than when they started? If golf is such a relaxing game why do all golf courses have to have a full bar at the end of the course and a beer cart roaming the course for golfers who can’t make it nine holes without a drink? And the terms used in golf don’t make sense to me. I thought a foursome was something you only read about in a racy magazine. The tee and the cup aren’t used together, wedges don’t have anything to do with tight underwear but can be a pain in that general area, the driver doesn’t use a steering wheel, the putter isn’t something you do around the house, and landing in a bunker doesn’t protect you from enemy fire but instead causes you to hurl your favorite club into a lake. Who thought these things up? To an invading alien attacking the earth, golf would look like an easy way to torture humans into mindless submission. Think about it. World leaders who

Funny thing is... Sammy Haddad

are the smartest and most successful among us can often be seen coming off a golf course talking to themselves, then stomping into the onsite bar to drink themselves into oblivion? Forget the lasers. These silly humans can be conquered by just marching them into torture chambers called country clubs. In this game, the strongest individuals in the world, professional athletes for example, can be brought to tears by something that looks like a little round marshmallow that has more dimples than Shirley Temple. My advice, if you really want to relax, grab a sixpack from the fridge and head for the beach where people love the sand and the only hazard is getting caught staring at the lifeguard’s girlfriend. Warbird collection grows

The Valiant Air Command is pleased to announce the addition of a Douglas A-4C Skyhawk to its Warbird collection. The aircraft flew into the Space Coast Regional Airport today. The Skyhawk is a highly regarded US Navy attack aircraft. Originally deployed in the 1950s, the Skyhawk played a vital role in the Vietnam conflict. It proved amenable to new missions as an advanced pilot trainer, and even equipped the U.S. Navy aerial demonstration team, the Blue Angels, for a decade. Its lively flying characteristics and small size made it popular as an “adversary” trainer, teaching U.S. Navy and other military pilots the kind of maneuvers they might have to employ against our potential adversaries’ small, maneuverable fighters. This A-4C is fully airworthy, and is a frequent performer in airshows and other events across the nation. It will be on display in the Vietnam hangar of the Valiant Air Command, at 6600 TICO Rd. in Titusville. For more information, call the Valiant Air Command at 321-268-1941. SL

Aeronautical hero dares generations: ‘Dream to Soar’ By Linda Wiggins Three generations of moxie, smarts and hard work came together last month in an effort to give youth, young adults and boomers to seniors the inspiration to pursue dreams to liftoff and beyond. Aeronautical prodigy Barrington Irving rose up and out of the Liberty City schools and Opa-Locka ghettos of his Miami youth, and set the stage locally to provide that inspiration in hopes it may generate economic prosperity through STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — in U.S. Congressional District 8’s Brevard County. “We are so lucky to get this guy to Brevard,” Congressman Bill Posey said at the Feb. 20 “Dream to Soar” event held at Florida Institute of Technology’s Gleason Performing Arts Auditorium. “He is an illustration of how important STEM is to our success, whether you are still in school, starting out in life, or reinventing yourself at any age. It is absolutely the key to our economic future on the Space Coast.” STEM wasn’t Barrington’s only lottery ticket out of urban poverty. He also held the golden ticket his peers dreamed of: a full scholarship to the University of Florida to play football. It might have led to an NFL career, or self implosion from drug addiction or other personal ills he’d witnessed in his neighborhood. He chose instead to go to aeronautical school and become the first black pilot to fly solo around the world. In 2007, at age 23, he was also the youngest pilot to accomplish the feat, breaking seven speed and distance records on his 97-day trip. In order to accomplish this, he had to beg for sponsors to buy parts for the airplane, which he built himself for the speed and endurance required for the feat. Rather than changing his surroundings with a geographical cure, he had a better idea. He chose to return to his Opa-Locka neighborhood to change it from within through his nonprofit Experience Aviation school, where youngsters could also change their destiny through STEM. “I never thought I was smart enough to fly a plane, until someone reached out to me and showed me I could do it, and mentored me along the way, and never let me give up on my dreams,” he told hundreds of middle and high school students, FIT students and current and potential entrepreneurs and community leaders. “My goal is to do the same for others.”

Experience Aviation takes a group of students and oversees them through a process where they build an airplane by themselves as a team with adult instruction and supervision, many learning STEM principles for the first time. Brevard attendees will follow Barrington digitally on this next adventure in a specially outfitted Hawker Beechcraft jet that is also a flying classroom. Students will be aboard physically and via social media for a nine-week journey around the world starting in September. Dear Gramma

Reunion is a ‘grand’ homecoming By Linda Wiggins Macaroni and cheese. Love of baseball. Emphasis on academics. These three things tied Carmella Nusser of Melbourne closer to her grandson Scott Sullivan than any other of her grandkids. She ultimately joined the ranks of the “ones who wait.” The wait ended Feb. 11 when the two embraced for the first time in nearly a year. Sullivan and about 100 of his fellow troops from Florida National Guard’s 715th Military Police Company flew into Melbourne International Airport and reconnected with loved ones at the Melbourne Armory to cap their deployment to Afghanistan. “I used to go to her house every day after school and she would make macaroni and cheese for me. We shared an interest in sports, school. We just match,” Sullivan said. In addition to the family matriarch, he made the rounds of hugs and handshakes to more than a dozen close family members, numerous fellow warriors, and well-wishers numbering into the hundreds with community members, news media and veterans service and social groups on deck. A Sunday “thanksgiving” dinner followed to mark Sullivan’s safe return from his third deployment, with 28 loved ones at the table. Nusser was at the head of that table, too. “As a grandparent, just as with being a parent, you tend to look and see what is important to that youngster, and see if you can come alongside that. Fortunately, that wasn’t hard, because I love baseball,” Nusser said of Sullivan’s favorite pastime. It was always evident when she and Nancy Stephens, Nusser’s daughter and Sullivan’s mother, were in the stands. “Coach always said he knew when they were there, which was virtually every game,” Sullivan said, “because of all the screaming and hollering.” The fields behind the Melbourne Armory at McGrath Park were at the heart of it all, and so it goes for the next generation, Stephens’ grandkids and Nusser’s great grandkids. Talented ballplayers continue to hail from the united brood of Atlanta Braves fans. After stopping off at his grandmother’s for mac and cheese, it was home to hit the books. Sports were high priority for Sullivan and his five siblings, but academics took the gold. While it is a known and accepted fact that Sullivan is Nusser’s favorite grand, none of his siblings begrudge him for it. Stephens gave the background story as Sullivan held the diminutive Nusser close and looked into her eyes on the armory tarmac, gently sweeping fine strands of hair behind her ear. His grandmother’s face lit up with the recognition that has otherwise begun to fade with the years. “Everybody knows it and we have a lot of fun with it,” Stephens said. “They do have a great friendship, but she dotes and loves on them all.” SL

Dear Gramma: My daughters Susan and Tina believe I should babysit their children whenever asked. I can’t always, due to my schedule. Susan complains I spend more time with Tina’s children than hers. Truth is, Tina brings her children here and invites me to her home more than Susan. I love them all and don’t know what to say or do so none of them are upset. —Single Grandmother Dear Single: Babysitting your grandchildren is a tremendous benefit for all concerned. However, it’s unreasonable for anyone to expect you to do it whenever they want. Explain to each daughter that you enjoy time spent with their children, but you cannot always be available when asked. Determine the amount of time you want to devote to visits and babysitting and stick to it. Remind your daughters of your love for them and their children, but tell them you have a busy schedule, too.

Music man wows crowd at Senior Safari By flora Reigada Multi-talented Marc Dobson of Cocoa can play the drums, guitar and harmonica. He can also sing and dance. More than that, he is a one-man band who can do it all at the same time. “I play 9.5 instruments at once and truly rival the performance of a threeor four-piece band,” he wrote on his website. Visitors to Senior Life’s Senior Safari held Feb. 7, at the Brevard Zoo were treated to Dobson’s performance. Head to toe, he literally “wore” his instruments: a drum “backpack” complete with straps attached to his feet. When he dances, the drums play, accompanying his guitar and harmonica. “A one-man band on steroids,” is what he calls himself. According to his website, he began “dreaming of being a one-man band around age 14.” Getting to where he is today has been a lifelong journey. “I morphed into it from a lifetime of performing music for a living,” he wrote. At 17, he started out as a street performer. He went on to “gig on streets, arenas and every venue type between.” In March 2010, “The One-Man Band” was born. “I believe it’s taken a combination of skills I am passionate about and lucky to have,” he wrote. But Dobson is more than a

Duo of senior safety vendors tie for expo award Jennifer Helin Rosemary Barton

Vendors went all out decorating their tables for Senior Life’s Senior Safari & Wellness Walkabout at the Brevard Zoo Feb. 7, celebrating the release of the 2014 Boomer GuiDe. “We really worked at it,” said Susan Blesch of ADT security monitoring systems. “We went to the new Bass Pro Shop to get mosquito netting and other items to reflect the safari and outback theme.” She tied for best booth décor with Jennifer Helin of Seniors Helping Seniors, who worked her booth with her mother and company co-owner, rosemary Barton. Both dressed in safari theme from head to toe, from pith helmets to hiking shoes. Blesch and Helin met at a previous educational outreach event. They decided to place their displays next to one another for the first time at Senior Safari to support each other in better serving their shared populations. “We offer a very popular personal emergency response system service, as well as a traditional security monitoring system services,” Blesch said, gesturing to Helin.

Susan Blesch

“Whereas we provide all manner of services in people’s homes so they are safe and supported there,” said Helin, whose firm hires seniors to, as the name implies, help other seniors. Without missing a beat, ADT’s Blesch brought the thought full circle. “There are a lot of boomers who are retiring every day, and we want to age in our homes,” Blesch said. “our products and services are great together, because we keep people safe in their homes, and Seniors Helping Seniors makes sure our clients have everything they need to successfully remain living at home. We feel comfortable giving referrals back and forth because we know integrity is super important to us both, and we serve a vulnerable clientele.” For more information on ADT, call Blesch at 321-537-0577, and for Seniors Helping Seniors, call Helin at 321-722-2999.

Sibling rivalries retain pecking order as parents age By Linda Wiggins Something strange happens when it’s time for adult children to reverse roles and provide care for an aging parent. Suddenly, every sibling is 12 years old emotionally. And while the role reversal of child-to-parent is tough on both parties, sibling stress is worse because it always looks like something else. I remember how important it was for me to make it back to Michigan each year for Christmas. All my siblings were invested in families of their own, which meant added pressure to please in-laws with their holiday presence. But I could do the adult version of the

The Sandwich Generation Linda Wiggins baby-of-the-family pout and stamp, and generally get a good turnout at the pleasant-but-uncomfortable Christmas Eve dinner, gift exchange and contest for best covered dish. As a former bachelorette, in addition to being the youngest child of 10, I invested a lot of energy in my family of origin. Ultimately, I

Edens Garden

became my mother’s care coordinator. Suddenly, I was not only the boss of my mother — while pretending to be more of an accommodating assistant so I could actually get her to do things in her best interest — but the boss of my siblings concerning our mother’s care. Sibling rivalry follows us into adulthood, and when we become the caretakers of our parents, the rivalry takes steroids and buys a gym membership. If, like me, we are members of the Sandwich Generation, we are coordinating care for our aging parents at the same time we are caring for young children or attempting to get or keep adult progeny in nests and passions of their own. At a time when we may be in the soup

financially, emotionally, mentally and spiritually with stress from upper and lower generations and attempts at our own care, it seems we can often count on siblings to come along and turn up the heat instead of helping to take pressure off. Let’s be honest. As the baby of the family, I had zippo authority, and could only get my way with my wiles. It did feel good to turn the tables and put my foot down in the name of acting power of attorney, health care surrogate, or whatever weapon I wielded in a given situation to fulfill my mother’s wishes as I interpreted them. In addition to that fleeting satisfaction, I got an emotional beatdown by a handful of bullies, each of us reverting to our adolescent pecking order, with the lowest on the totem pole too intimidated to take a stand. I wish I could say we eventually put it all behind us and fell back in love, that I somehow have the answers so you can follow the advice in this column and do the same. The truth is, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a white Christmas. SL

Life in the 1930s part 1 of 2 Month of March marks 100-day climb out of the Great Depression BY MARVIN LESSER Having been born in 1930 at the beginning of the Great Depression, I feel compelled to share some of my observations with future generations. In researching the history of this era, I realized that the situation was far worse and more challenging than I imagined. Newspapers, radio, movie newsreels and Life magazine were the main source of news. The New York Times headline on Oct. 30, 1929 read in part “Stocks Collapse in 16,410,030 Share Day.” From the 1929 stock market crash through 1932, our economy went seriously downhill. Starting with the margin calls on Wall Street, runs on the banks, farm foreclosures, staggering unemployment and even starvation, the government found it difficult to reverse. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s inaugural address on March 4, 1933, set the tone for the start of the recovery 81 years ago this month. “This great nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, nameless, unreasonable, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” Shortly after taking the oath, the president declared a national bank holiday and called a special session of Congress to begin four days later. By mid-day the following Monday, the panic appeared to be over.

On the evening of Sunday, March 12, the president started keeping the American people informed about their government with his first “Radio Fireside Chat.” In the Administration’s first 100 days, an incredible amount of legislation was enacted. Some of the laws enacted included the Agriculture Adjustment Act, the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Truth in Securities Act and the Tennessee Valley Authority Act. At the same time, there was a growing movement to repeal the 1920 prohibition of the sale of alcohol that gave the era the nickname the Roaring 20s, as many Americans defied this act in illegal bootleg gin joints. In a light moment amid the grueling legislative work, aware of growing support for repeal, FDR quipped at a dinner, “This would be a good time for a beer.” That winter, on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1933, a New York Times headline read in part, “Prohibition Repeal is ratified at 5:32 p.m.” SL

Manage cancer fatigue with these tips Special to Senior Life According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), cancer-related fatigue is the most common side effect of cancer and cancer treatment. Research suggests that anywhere between 70 and 100 percent of cancer patients getting treatment have fatigue. And about 30 to 50 percent of cancer survivors have said that their fatigue lasts for months or even years after they finish treatment. In its continued efforts to educate the community about cancer and its effects, Cancer Care Centers of Brevard (CCCB) is hosting the Fatigue Management Institute of Florida Institute of Technology, which will provide a three-session Cancer Fatigue Management Workshop on Wednesday, March 12, March 19 and March 26 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The free workshop will be held at CCCB located at 1430 Pine Street in Melbourne. Open to the public, the Fatigue Management Institute will educate and answer questions about cancer-related fatigue and techniques and lifestyle changes to more effectively manage the condition during and after treatment. “With the emotional and physical toll cancer takes on patients, it is extremely important for patients to discuss their fatigue with their nurse or doctor so that we can prescribe an action plan to help them remain strong in both body and mind,” said Ravi

Shankar, M.D., radiation oncologist and medical director of CCCB. The ACS describes fatigue as a common side effect of many cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, stem cell transplant and immunotherapy. These treatments often kill fast-growing healthy cells, especially the cells in the bone marrow that make blood. As a result, this causes fatigue because red blood cells carry oxygen to fuel all the cells in the body. Too few red blood cells (anemia) mean too little energy to meet the body’s needs. There are numerous risk factors as well as important tips for managing cancer-related fatigue. They include the following that can also be found on the ACS’ “Fatigue in People With Cancer” website located at cancer.org/ treatment/treatmentsandsideeffects/ physicalsideeffects/fatigue/ fatigueinpeoplewithcancer/ fatigue-in-people-with-cancercauses-of-fatigue-in-cancer. Tips for Managing Fatigue Sometimes it’s hard even for the doctor to figure out exactly what’s causing a person’s fatigue. Still, a program of regular exercise, managing stress, and finding ways to deal with anxiety and depression seem to help most people deal with fatigue. Treating sleep problems and correcting nutrition problems can help fight fatigue, too. Keep in mind that it may take up to

eight weeks of treatment before you notice your fatigue getting better, but for some people it happens faster.

Other tips include: • Save your energy. • Use distractions like listening to music, visiting with friends or reading a book. • Use attention-restoring activities like walking in a park, sitting in a peaceful setting and gardening. • Reduce stress by talking about it in support groups and learning relaxation exercises. • Exercise your body by participating in aerobic and strength-building exercise programs (discuss with doctor prior to beginning any exercise program). • Get nutrition counseling. • Improve sleep.

For more information, please call 321-952-0898, or log on to cancercarebrevard.com. SL

Busy lifestyle suits player both on, off the court By Jeff Navin Too much of the ocean air is blocked by condominiums in Satellite Beach, according to Martha Smith. But she is lucky, she added. The house that she and her late husband, Edwin, built in 1968 has an unimpeded path for the wind to cool both her front porch and the house itself when the windows are open during the winter time. Smith, who will turn 89 in May, doesn’t play tennis four or five times a week like she did up until a couple of years ago. Two times a week is sufficient for a woman who still works occasionally at the front desk of the Kiwi Club, where she has played since it opened 12 years ago. Long walks with her friends both on the beach and over the Melbourne Causeway when weather permits also are her foundation for good health. As she sat in her favorite chair on the front porch of her house, Smith shared a secret about women’s tennis. “The good thing about playing tennis is having good friends,’’ said Smith, who as the captain guided her women’s team from Kiwi consisting of players ranging in age from 60 to their late 70s to a USTA national championship in 2006. “We know the best places in town to eat. Lunch afterward is a necessity in women’s tennis. We also go to plays together. ... There are 10 of us who go to the Henegar (Center), Riverside in Vero Beach, the Bob Carr (in Orlando), Surfside in Cocoa Beach, the Cocoa Playhouse and the Melbourne Civic Theater. I loved that place when it used to be the Phoenix Theater.’’

Smith started playing tennis at the age of 55. “I played with a friend every Saturday and Sunday at Melbourne Beach,’’ Smith said. “We were real hackers, and we could hardly keep score. That’s how it started.’’ Lessons with both Tomas Karlsson, the general manager of the Kiwi Tennis Club, and Murray Lilley, from the old Pines Tennis Club at that location, helped her to hone her game. “Tomas drilled with me to the point where I actually could play,’’ Smith said. “Now, I give him a lesson now and then. I still will take lessons in little groups. Tomas will pick up things like I’m dropping my head when I’m serving or I need to toss the ball higher on my serve. It’s all little refresher things. I was pretty good at one point. My best stroke was my forehand, and I had a pretty good serve.’’ Smith no longer participates in the Space Coast Tennis League or in USTA competition, but she is quick to praise the opportunities to play competitively in Brevard County. “I was up there in a range of ages, and they’ve got divisions from 18 to whatever your age is,’’ Smith said. “Anybody can play tennis. Dear Lance, Last year I came close to falling into t,he “doughnut hole” with my Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. My doctor recently prescribed an additional expensive medication that will probably cause me to go into the “doughnut hole” this year. I have a limited income and am afraid that I will not be able to afford my medications once I am in this coverage gap. What can I do?

Ask Lance Lance P. Jarvis SHINE

—Very Concerned Dear Very Concerned, For 2014, the coverage gap starts when your total prescription costs reach $2,850. Your total drug costs include the cost of prescriptions paid by you and your plan beginning at the start of the year. Once you reach the coverage gap, you will be responsible for paying 47.5 percent of brandname prescriptions and 72 percent for generics. You will remain in the coverage gap until you have reached a total prescription cost of $4,550 from the start of the year. At this point, you will begin paying a significantly reduced cost for your prescriptions. Not everyone reaches the coverage gap, but for those who do, SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) counselors have experience assisting clients with situations such as yours and are often able to assist. There are several ways you may be able to reduce your medication costs if you fall into the coverage gap. Low-Income Subsidy (Extra Help) If you meet the income and asset requirements, the program can save you substantial costs on your medications. Offered through the Social Security Administration, Extra Help provides a reduced or no-cost prescription drug plan, as well as low-cost prescriptions, and

there is no “doughnut hole.” In 2014, individuals with income of less than $1,459 ($1,966 for couples) and financial resources of less than $11,940 ($23,860 for couples) are eligible for this program. You can apply for this program online at ssa.gov/prescriptionhelp/. You can also obtain an application at any Social Security Administration office or from one of the SHINE offices. Discount Prescription Cards Florida residents can obtain a free card that entitles you to discounts on prescriptions at most pharmacies. The Florida Discount Drug Card can also be used to get a discount of 5 to 42 percent on medications that are not covered by your prescription drug plan formulary. To print a card online, go to floridadiscountdrugcard.com. You can also request a card by calling 1-866-341-8894. There is a $1.50 fee for printing and mailing the card. Brevard County residents can obtain a free Brevard County Prescription Discount Card available at many pharmacies or at a SHINE office. This card can be used when your prescription is not covered by insurance and can even be used for your pet’s prescriptions. Discounts on medications average 24 percent. You can also print a card online by going to http://www.nacorx.org and selecting Brevard County. Patient Assistance Programs Many pharmaceutical manufacturers

Discover...

offer a program that provides free or reduced costs for your prescriptions if income requirements are met. SHINE counselors can research whether the medications you are on are ones for which the drug manufacturers provide assistance. If there is assistance available, the SHINE counselor will provide you with the application(s) that you and your physician must complete. Since it takes time to process your application for assistance, it is best to contact SHINE before you are in the coverage gap. Your monthly statement from your drug plan tells you how close you are to the “doughnut hole.” About SHINE SHINE is an award-winning statewide volunteer program that provides free, unbiased, and confidential counseling and information for people on Medicare, their families, and caregivers. SHINE is a program of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, and is administered in partnership with the state’s 11 Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs). In Brevard County, our ADRC is the Senior Resource Alliance in Orlando. To contact a SHINE counselor for unbiased assistance, call the Elder Helpline toll-free at 1-800-9635337 or locally call 321-752-8080. SHINE has 10 offices throughout Brevard County, including two new locations in Satellite Beach. SHINE counselors can assist you over the phone or in person at one of the sites. To find a SHINE counseling site near you, visit FloridaSHINE. org or call the numbers above.

Medical equipment bank is seeking immediate donations by Rae Botsford

The Sunflower House, a service of Aging Matters in Brevard, is currently seeking several specific donations for its medical equipment bank. The bank’s needs change based on requests that come in, and right now they need wheelchairs, walkers with seats, canes and shower chairs. The Sunflower House starts requesting donations when they are having difficulty meeting the demand for certain items. “Walkers with seats are super, super popular,” said Jeanne Hakkila-Wills, the vice president of mission advancement for Aging Matters in Brevard. The donation-based program lends equipment to individuals age 60 and older, or to their caregivers, when they can’t afford to purchase it themselves. The bank is always accepting donations, and when people call offering walkers, canes, bedside commodes and other things, the Sunflower House decides whether it’s something they can use. “We want to promote and maintain independence,” said Hakkila-Wills. She said their goal is to keep seniors happy, healthy, safe and in their homes. “It’s grab bars, it’s nutrition, it’s ramps, it’s anything we can do to help you maintain that quality of life.” Sunflower House is located in the Merritt Square Mall. To make an appointment to drop off or pick up equipment, call 321-452-4341. SL

Retired Air Force Major cooks from the heart by Maria Sonnenberg Even under duress, Jay Rudy won’t divulge the secret recipe for his honeycakes, the treat he annually cooks up in large batches for the Men Cooking from the Heart event that helps Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida. “I tell people that to know the recipe, you have to be a Rudy or you have to marry one,” he joked. Rudy has been a fixture at Men Cooking from the Heart for nearly 20 years the signature fundraising event has existed. Big Brothers Big Sisters is one of myriad organizations dear to the Melbourne resident’s heart. In 2010, after his wife, Linda Sue, lost her battle with breast cancer, Rudy recruited 248 individuals to participate in the Komen Foundation’s 14th annual Race for the Cure at the campus of the University of Central Florida. His Fight like a Girl team earned the Largest Community Team Award and raised the most pledges, more than $15,000. In 1978, Rudy earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at Southwest Texas State University. Area history comes alive in cemetery “I learned about fascinating people who had come from many places and lived interesting lives.” Andrew Feaster, she would discover, was buried in 1869. “His is the earliest marked grave,” she said. Feaster rests with many from Titusville’s founding families, as well as veterans from the Civil War and subsequent wars. Foster funneled her newfound passion into the Brevard Heritage Foundation, which has helped to protect and restore many historic sites. “The most important and exciting was the discovery, recovery and acquisition of the 1890s Clifton Schoolhouse for African American students,” she said. Found on NASA property, the school was started by Butler

Campbell and Andrew Jackson to educate their children. “The foundation’s most visible accomplishment was the restoration of the Pritchard House,” she said, thanking the community and businesses for their generous support. Brevard Heritage Foundation members also contribute their labor by maintaining and operating the Pritchard House. “We’re saving the past for the present and future,” Foster said. Projects are ongoing and the foundation encourages community participation. Meetings are on the second Monday of each month at the Titusville Public Library, 2121 S. Hopkins Ave. Call to verify time at 321-267-4480 or go to nbbd.com/npr/preservation SL

Standing on the veranda of the historic Pritchard House in Titusville, Roz Foster describes life a century ago. By Flora Reigada As president of the Brevard Heritage Foundation, Roz Foster wears vintage clothing to conduct tours of Titusville’s historic Pritchard House. She talks about Brevard’s past as if she had witnessed it. But when Foster moved from New Jersey to Cocoa Beach in 1964, all she associated with Florida were palm trees and oranges. This paradise she now called home seemed like a new state with no past or history.

A move to Titusville and a visit to the historic LaGrange Cemetery would challenge that perception. Foster had joined the Helping Hands Gardeners to clean the grave of Titusville founder Col. Henry Titus. In that place of the departed, Foster’s passion for area history came alive. “It surprised me to read on Andrew Feaster’s tombstone that he had fought in the War of 1812,” she said. She went on to research names on the older tombstones and the times they represented.

Rita Burton, an artist and a teacher, owns The Dream Factory, in Titusville. By Flora Reigada Artist and author Rita Burton recently opened The Dream Factory in Titusville. It is her art gallery and workshop. The name was inspired Mark Batterson’s book, “Draw the Circle” and a prayer it discussed. The prayer was that a coffee house would become a “dream factory” of inspired ideas. In her own dream factory, Burton brings these to canvas, paper, painted floorcloth rugs and more. The gallery is at the Hammocks, a workshop, office, storage and retail facility off Cheney Highway. Burton is among the artisans who hone their craft there. She defined her art as “expressionistic and impressionistic.” As an illustration of her Christian faith, it can also be, “sometimes inspirational and abstractinspirational, even a prayer,” she said. Burton sees a divine purpose for The Dream Factory. It is “to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world,’” as stated in Matthew

The Dream Factory artist and teacher Rita Burton displays some of the books she has authored and illustrated. 5:14 of The Message Bible. These colors are displayed through the art exhibited in her gallery and in the picture books she authors and illustrates. These include “Funky Me and 3” and “The Oracles of Quack Quack Duck.” “With fun images and poetry, these books are for young children and the young at heart,” she said.

Burton also illustrated the cover of her autobiography, “The Return of the Prodigal Girl,” an honest account of her struggles and faith, as well as adventures while living on a 36-foot Morgan sailboat with her retired sea captain husband, Hal. Her books may be purchased at the gallery or through Lulu Publishing at lulu.com. She is offering classes such as painting, expressionistic drawing and children’s art. “Learn to draw what you see, using conte crayon, graphite, ink and charcoal,” she said. Burton will also help writers prepare a manuscript for publication, using a template. The Hammocks is at 2459 Cheney Highway and The Dream Factory is No. 79. It’s not a cat, and it’s not a monkey, but the misnamed meerkat may just be the most interesting four-legged critter to stand on two feet. They hail from South Africa and surrounding areas, thus their misnaming with a Dutch word that is closer to cat or monkey. They will officially call Brevard Zoo their home at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15, arriving as a birthday gift to the community with a twoday celebration of two decades of support. Made popular by Timon from The Lion King and documentary and reality TV shows since, these social mammals are very family oriented. There is only one mating pair — the alpha male and female —per clan of around 20 members. We’ll learn the chosen names of our clan bosses on opening day, and meet the members who will all be identifiable by their looks and personalities. They serve as babysitters, teachers, foragers and fill other necessary roles, such as watchman standing sentry over burrows to notify of aerial or terrestrial threats with specific different barks and whistles. See for yourself mid-March, and you’ll likely be back time and again to catch the next installment of Brevard’s own “Meerkat Manor.” For more information, call 321-254-9453. SL

Washington Nationals star outfielder Bryce Harper takes batting practice during a spring training workout at the Carl Barger Complex in Viera.

Catch a Washington Nationals spring training game while you still can The Washington Nationals take on the hottest teams in Major League Baseball in our own backyard this month as spring training fires up at Space Coast Stadium. Teams to appear at home games include the Atlanta Braves (March 1, 8), Miami Marlins (March 2, 22), New York Mets (March 5, 13, 25), Houston Astros (March 7, 10, 19), St. Louis Cardinals (March 9), New York Yankees (March 11), Detroit Tigers (March 16, 20 and March 29 at Nationals Park). March 31 is opening day. The majority of the home games will be at 1:05 p.m., with two evening games at 6:05 p.m. against the Astros. Gates open an hour before game start.

Local community leaders are urging support and attendance of the games. The team is in negotiations with other communities in Florida. Despite the recent collapse of proposals for other sites, the Nationals have enlisted the help of former U.S. congressman Mark Foley to help find a potential spring training home in Palm Beach County. For more scheduling information or to purchase tickets, go to washington. nationals.mlb.com, and to support the effort to retain the Nationals, call Holly Woolsey of Brevard County Commissioner Robin Fisher’s office at 321-264-6750.
