The Boomer Guide is an award-winning glossy publication with interesting stories and listings of places to shop, eat, play, live and volunteer, as well as a comprehensive array of nonprofit services for the boomer and senior population in general, and veterans in particular. The 2015 edition of the Boomer Guide will be released at the Senior Safari Boomer Guide Expo & Caribbean Party from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 at the Brevard Zoo. Presented by Senior Life, the expo offers free entry for attendees 55 and over, courtesy of venue sponsor Senior Life Darrell Woehler Brevard Zoo. Wellness experts will be on hand to offer healthy living tips. Models from the 2015 Boomer Guide will be dressed in their favorite vacation attire, many in a cruise theme from the main photo shoot at Port Canaveral, nearly the busiest vacation port in the world. In the new Boomer Guide, you’ll read about Linda Jones, modeling for the second year and now officially a model and acting talent signed with an agency. “All my life people have asked me if I’m a model because I’m tall and slender, and I’ve always wanted to be a model,” Jones said. “But I never had the courage to step out on my dreams until I became a Boomer model. It’s been really exciting.” Jones and all the other models will find out which of them made the cover at the 1 p.m. release in the Nyami Nyami River Lodge. Photographed by the renowned Keith Betterley of Betterley Photographic, the cover, as well as the publication overall, routinely wins top awards from the North American Mature Publishers Association. “There has been so much excitement over the model search for the Boomer Guide,” said Jill Blue-Gaines, CEO of expo producer Bluewater Creative Group, which publishes the Boomer Guide, Senior Life, Viera Voice, Viera MD and the Charlie Corbeil Birding Guide. “So many models have told me just what Linda said, that since they were picked to appear on the pages of the Boomer Guide they now have the courage to pursue their dreams. It’s a thrill to open magazines and newspapers and look at glossy ads and see them looking back at me.” After the Senior Safari release, the Boomer Guides will be distributed in high traffic areas all over Brevard County. The Forever Young expo takes place during Florida Archaeology Month, when sites like the Brevard Museum put on special museum exhibits, tours of archaeological sites, films, lectures and demonstrations, and even special archeological digs. “It’s an exciting time for the museum, the very best time to show it off,” said Bruce Piatek, director of the Brevard Museum and also an archeologist. The museum is managed by the Florida Historical Society, so Piatek wears two hats, the other as head of the society’s Archaeological Institute, housed at the museum. The museum is sponsoring the Forever Young expo with free museum entry for attendees 55 and over. Guests 54 and younger pay the regular admission price of $9 for adults and $5 for children ages 4 to 12. There will be live music and other entertainment, games, exhibits, health information, refreshments and lunch available for purchase. The selection of the site for the expo was generated by input from Senior Life readers. “Our readers tell us that history is very important to them and very interesting to them,” said Jill Blue-Gaines, CEO of expo producer Bluewater Creative Group, which publishes Senior Life and the annual Boomer Guide, Viera Voice, Viera MD and the Charlie Corbeil Birding Guide. “When we plan an expo, it’s always a destination location that people tell us they love going to or have been meaning to visit, and that way we can all have fun together doing what we love.” The Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science is at 2201 Michigan Ave. in Cocoa, west of the Florida Solar Energy Institute, at the northwestern edge of the Eastern Florida State College main campus. American icon to make history at Senior Life expos I’d like to dedicate this space to an amazing Floridian and American icon. R.L. Lewis is our living national treasure right here on the Space Coast. It’s easy not to appreciate something in our own backyard; it’s human nature to think something that exists right near us can’t be as valuable as something far away or from far away. If you haven’t seen an original Highwaymen artist in action, now is the time to plan to go and see Lewis on Friday, Feb. 6 at the Senior Safari Boomer Guide Expo & Caribbean Beach Party or Friday, March 13 at Senior Life’s Forever Young Senior Expo. See pages 17-20 for details. The term relates to 26 African-American artists faced with the challenge of making a living during the Civil Rights transition from segregation in the South. They began painting sweeping scenes of Florida landscapes and selling them from the trunks of their cars along coastal roads like U.S. 1 and SR A1A, hence the name. Do the math and you can see that adult males from young to old in the 1950s to the 1970s won’t be with us much longer, and many are already falling to poor health. There are only a handful left and the only reason R.L. Lewis is still with us is because a few years ago he got a handle on his health at death’s door and began eating right and hitting the gym. What a precious gift is our good health. At these events you will see imagery never before seen in a Highwaymen painting. All day long during the zoo and museum expos, R.L. will be display his handiwork before your own eyes, how Highwaymen used ordinary household items or discarded tools to paint because they could not afford art supplies. The zoo painting will include zebras as a nod to the new exhibit opening Feb. 14, and the museum will include a Windover village scene from more than 7,000 years ago as a nod to the earth-shattering archaeological local find on display there. Both paintings will be on silent auction at the end of the expos and the proceeds benefit these respective gems of local destinations.

While the Merritt Island community overlooking the sweeping Indian River Lagoon is for retirees, make no mistake. Life for the Greenhauses and their neighbors is full. “It’s important that residents always maintain fulfilling activities that give life meaning. That doesn’t change when we retire,” said Debbie Williams, community relations director at Courtenay Springs. At the end of the day, or whenever they take a fancy, the Greenhauses put chores on hold and break for a delicious meal, prepared by on-site gourmet chef Phil Panarello. “Our favorite is surf and turf,” Eunice Greenhaus said. Great food is vital to the success of an upscale senior living community,
Williams said. “As more and more people are looking into carefree-living options, it becomes really important to have the most delicious food prepared throughout the day, every day, and on special occasions,” Williams said. “We are so fortunate to have Chef Phil, because he knows that while everyone loves their favorite dishes, it’s great to have something new and exciting that might well become a new favorite.” Fun activities are also key to happiness. Dave Greenhaus enjoys wood-working, golf and watching sports, while Eunice adds “avid speed reader” to mahjong on her list of pastimes. “It’s like living on a luxury cruise liner without the bouncy water,” Dave Greenhaus said with a smile. Five years later, he retired for good and headed to the Sunshine State. “We wanted to leave an area that, before you could use a snow blower, you had to use a snow shovel,” he said. “I knew of Indian River Colony Club in Brevard from my Patrick days and one of the board members at the Academy lived at IRCC and invited us to visit.” Watts and his wife, Karen, love the IRCC camaraderie and community spirit. In his free time, he serves on IRCC’s board of directors and with the Gen. Daniel “Chappie” James, Jr., Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Never underestimate the value of television. For retired Navy Capt. Robert Watts, a television show led to a distinguished 32-year Navy career. “There was no one in my family in the military, but I saw a television show about the men of Annapolis and I wanted to do that,” Watts said. “I didn’t even have a clue where Annapolis was.” The Brooklyn native would soon find out exactly where the United States Naval Academy happened to be situated, since he was able to attain an appointment to what he originally thought would lead to a job with submarines. “I got a chance to go into a submerged sub and then I felt the hull compression and the water rushing by,” Watts said. “I just said, ‘Let me out of here.’ ” However, when the opportunity presented itself to fly a helicopter, Watts knew his future path. “That was what I wanted to do,” he added. In 1973, with a bachelor’s degree in analytical management, the young Watts was assigned to Navy Recruiting District New York as the NROTC Program manager, but it was to be a

In February 2014, Jefferson’s painting “Flowers in the Garden” was chosen to hang in the Governor’s Mansion to celebrate Black History Month. Jefferson met Gov. Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott at a reception. “It was an awesome, honorable experience,” she said. “The governor and his wife were very personable, very warm.” That honor led to this month’s King Center exhibition for Jefferson, whose most recent award came in November when she won honorable mention at the Artists Registry Members’ annual exhibition at City Arts Factory in Orlando, an event that featured the works of about 70 artists. New science website is out of this world By Linda Wiggins Want to see inside a baby bald eagle’s nest? Get a Beluga whale’s eye view of its family life? Know the weight of the sun? Ron Morgan has placed it all and infinitely more at your fingertips at his International Science Center website, internationalsciencecenter.org. It didn’t take a rocket scientist, but it definitely helped. Morgan transferred to Brevard in 1964 to take charge of all electrical hardware, components and batteries for the Saturn rockets that lifted men to the moon. His name is among the 450 in the time capsule that’s been on the moon since Apollo 15 landed on the moon in 1971. He continued on to oversee the integrated logistics system for the International Space Center until his retirement. Since then, he’s worked to develop future space and defense professionals by making science, technology, engineering and math — STEM — exciting to students. He’ll pick up the STEM Mentor of the Year Award Feb. 26 during the National Engineers Week Awards Banquet presented by Space Coast Women In Defense at the Holiday Inn Melbourne-Viera Conference Center. The website connects students of any age to everything they could want to learn and brings all known discoveries of space, earth and sea to anyone who has a computer, tablet or smart phone, regardless of their ability to travel the realms in reality. High resolution photos, video and other multimedia make it the next best thing to being there. This month marks the addition of translated links in Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and Russian. The website’s designer, Rue Larue, will soon add a feature that will help with his particular disability, scotopic sensitivity syndrome, that causes letters to fade into a rainbow blur of color on the printed page. With his invention of the International Pictorial Language, communication occurs without any language at all. Words, verbs and other parts of speech are converted to video courtesy of a massive amount of uploaded imagery. “It’s like being on the Star Trek holodeck,” said Larue, a computer consultant for the space and defense industry whom Morgan calls a savant.

Morgan also is sensitive to the needs of people with disabilities, especially his aging peers who lose independence and mobility by the day. His goals are to bring education and employment opportunities to shut-ins as well as access to the world, its oceans, space and more. Morgan joked about the project partnership between him and Larue,
both volunteers on a website that sells no products to pay its way, but exists for pubic good, providing and producing content that is often beyond the
capacity of non-savants to grasp. “Between him and me,” Morgan said, “we’re way out there in outer space.” SL

World conquering athlete now living her greatest adventure By Linda Wiggins

Eventually, she got her GED, ironed clothes to afford college tuition and after a divorce moved out on her own for the first time in her life, raising Cera and Debi as a single mom. Rock climbing inspired her to pursue her master’s degree and then her Ph.D. in sport psychology — partly. She realized it took both mental and physical fitness to excel, and became, and still is, a highly sought after sport psychologist and life coach, giving workshops to both youth and adults, anyone who wants to explore their potential. She uses that skill to support Jessi’s newfound passion for lacrosse at West Shore Junior/Senior High School, strength conditioning and nature photography, which she picked up after “Gram” bought her a camera and took her to explore Colorado at age 9. Savage also imparts perspective, that success is not only about scoring a win, but more about finding and
Every decade milestone brings a universe-shifting adventure for great-grandmother Virginia Savage of Indialantic. At 30, she moved out to Colorado and took up rock climbing, and became a super-elite athlete capable of hauling her tiny frame up steep to almost inverse inclines by her fingertips. At 40, she bicycled 2,700 miles from Nova Scotia to Florida, her tires leaving land only for ferryboat linkups. She also worked on a sailboat for six months in the Virgin Islands, and when she was not aboard, she windsurfed. At 50, she rafted the full length of Grand Canyon in 24 days. At 60, she went to Costa Rica for six months to learn to surf better. Later, she set out alone on a 235-mile hike through the Sierras along the John Muir trail. During that trip, she broke her thumb, blew up her cook stove and had to learn to make one of her own out of a coffee can from Boy Scouts, suffered dysentery and lost 10 pounds off her diminutive 100-pound, 5-feetnothing frame. “It was a life-changing event when I decided to stop walking, a real affront to my never-say-die attitude,” Savage said. “But I realized I didn’t have to prove anything, to myself or anyone.” This year, as she approaches her seven-decade milestone, Savage is taking part in the greatest adventure of all: helping to raise her 14-year-old granddaughter, Jessi Irons. “She’s my great adventure, my meaningful purpose in my life right now. If not for her, I’d be all over the world doing stuff, but right now there’s nothing greater I could do than help her to grow. St. Johns Rivership offers views, fun, food and more By Rosemary H. Lynn Capt. John Sternberg is passionate about his steam boat, the Barbara-Lee of the St. Johns Rivership Co. For more than 30 years he has cruised the historic and beautiful St. Johns River in river boats his family owned. The paddlewheel boat takes passengers back to a more romantic and adventuresome time as music is provided from a live band and delicious food is served. There is plenty of room for dancing and lots of wildlife to view. The boat offers day and evening cruises. During the day, indigenous birds, turtles and alligators can be seen. Great herons, cormorants, eagles and osprey can be seen and photographic opportunities are abundant. During cooler months, manatees migrate to the warmer waters of the St. Johns and snack on hyacinth plants and other river grasses. The food aboard the boat has been called “fantastic” and Capt. Sternberg is very proud of the menu provided. Lunch and dinner menus offer a great variety of tasty food from salads to steak. There is also a complete cash bar on board. Sternberg and his siblings have been involved in river cruising for many years. For a long time, they owned and operated a dinner cruise boat that sailed from Sanford. All of the children grew up on the river, running that boat. After Sternberg’s father sold the cruise boat, the siblings saw an opportunity. They brought a new ship to the dock at the north end of Sanford’s Palmetto Avenue and named it after their mother, Barbara-Lee. It took a long time to get the boat in shape so that lunch and dinner cruises could be offered, but it was well worth the effort. The Barbara-Lee is an authentic sternwheel paddleboat. It has two enormous wooden wheels that push the boat through the water. They are operated by hydraulic pumps attached to diesel engines. “People are blown away by the food and the service staff,” Sternberg said. “I have worked with

They are great people.” When asked why the boat was named after his mother, Sternberg said, “She wasn’t just a mom to me but to everyone who worked for the cruise ships so it was only natural to name her the Barbara-Lee.” The Barbara-Lee is open from Wednesday to Sunday. There are special dinner cruises during the

The Boomer Guide is an award-winning glossy publication with interesting stories and listings of places to shop, eat, play, live and volunteer, as well as a comprehensive array of nonprofit services for the boomer and senior population in general, and veterans in particular. The 2015 edition of the Boomer Guide will be released at the Senior Safari Boomer Guide Expo & Caribbean Party from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 at the Brevard Zoo. Presented by Senior Life, the expo offers free entry for attendees 55 and older, courtesy of venue sponsor Brevard Zoo. Others pay regular admission price. Attractions include live music, exhibits, an update on the new zebra exhibit that debuts Feb. 14, Senior Life Darrell Woehler and prizes for the best vacation Senior Safari Boomer Guide Expo attendees destination outfit or costume, this will be the first to see the newly expanded year’s Senior Safari theme. Attendees can watch couples renew their wedding vows in advance of Valentine’s Day, take part in a scavenger hunt and enjoy live steel drum music and a performance by Mark Dobson, the One-Man Band. Wellness experts will be on hand to offer healthy living tips. Models from the 2015 Boomer Guide will be dressed in their favorite vacation attire, many in a cruise theme from the main photo shoot at Port Canaveral, nearly the busiest vacation port in the world. In the new Boomer Guide, you’ll read about Linda Jones, modeling for the second year and now officially a model and acting talent signed with an agency. “All my life people have asked me if I’m a model because I’m tall and slender, and I’ve always wanted to be a model,” Jones said. “But I never had the courage to step out on my dreams until I became a Boomer model. It’s been really exciting.” Jones and all the other models will find out which of them made the cover at the 1 p.m. release in the Nyami Nyami River Lodge. The museum is managed by the Florida Historical Society, so Piatek wears two hats, the other as head of the society’s Archaeological Institute, housed at the museum. The museum is sponsoring the Forever Young expo with free museum entry for attendees 55 and older. Guests 54 and younger pay the regular admission price of $9 for adults and $5 for children ages 4 to 12. There will be live music and other entertainment, games, exhibits, health information, refreshments and lunch available for purchase. Heart healthy facts can inspire good choices By George White February is American Heart Month, first designated in 2009 as a way to raise awareness of heart health issues and as a way to point the general public toward preventative practices. Toward that end, Titusville cardiologist Dr. Ravi Rao will present free half-hour presentations during the month at two locations. The presentations are being sponsored by Heart Care Centers of Florida. Snacks and soft drinks will be provided. The first presentation will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Titusville YMCA Family Center, 2400 Harrison St. The second presentation will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at Great Outdoors, 125 Plantation Dr. in Titusville. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Nearly 700,000 people die of heart diseases in the U.S. each year. That is about 29 percent of all U.S. deaths. In addition, heart disease is a leading cause of disability in the country. Heart disease is a term that includes several more specific heart conditions. The most common heart disease in the country is coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become hardened and narrowed due to the buildup of plaque. The most important risk factors for heart disease are high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, cigarette smoking, diabetes and obesity. Rao is an interventional cardiologist who specializes in the innovative therapies to relieve blockages in the heart and blood vessels throughout the body. The topic of prevention is most important to Rao because many things can be done by the patient. Coronary artery disease prevention can include

You must remember that if you don’t take care of yourself, you cannot care for your father. It is vital that you take some time every single day for yourself to prepare each morning and unwind in the evening. It’s not selfish. It’s part of healthy caregiving. Seek out other caregivers to talk to. Get into the habit of regular caregiver texts, phone calls and social meetings for lunch or coffee. Set up a schedule for time away each week, then reward yourself with a weekend away at least once a month. Take a daily walk, alone, if you can. Breathe deeply and purposefully. Nurture your hobby or start a new one. Stay connected to your friends and call on your brother for helpful advice. Find out what worked and what didn’t work for him and remember: this is not permanent.

Take naps and remember the value of deep breathing and meditation to help you relax. Seek support. Call the local Agency on Aging for suggestions. Look online for local or virtual caregiver support groups. Nobody understands your situation better than another caregiver. Let technology be your assistant. Use built-in alarms and reminders on your phone to alert you ahead of time for appointments, visitors, medications, meals, etc. Many pharmacies have online apps that let you refill prescriptions from home. Get an emergency alert system that connects to the phone system for when the one you care for must be alone. A press of the button can bring comfort or be the difference between an emergency and a tragedy. Another option is a monitoring system with cameras and door sensors. Check into therapy animals that can ease stress for you and the one in your care. Engage in the arts. Visit museums together, paint, sing or engage in old fashioned story telling to ease tension and reconnect. Learn how to deal with Sundowner’s Syndrome and plan activities early in the day. Hold regular family meetings to keep everyone apprised of the situation. If family is distant, use frequent emails or Skype visits. Siblings or cousins might pick up on your stress level before you are aware of it yourself. Don’t wait until you are burned out to seek help. SL

Four decades of gallery history helps Eau Gallie Arts District thrive By Linda Wiggins There’s a lot of history to Fifth Avenue Art Gallery, and not just the 40 years it celebrates at the First Friday art walk from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 6. The event, featuring a 7 p.m. champagne toast to the gallery’s future, kicks off Founder’s Day celebrations the following day for the Eau Gallie cultural center that both helped build it, and it helped build. Looking back, it was a little idea that could. Local artists Nancy Crawford and Betty Clifton, who since has passed away, sought a place to show their works and expose the community to fine art. They recruited 10 additional member artists and obtained shared gallery space on Fifth Avenue in Indialantic, hence the name. The idea caught on and new members joined, resulting in the relocation of the gallery to three other locations on the same street. They made a conscious decision to relocate to downtown Eau Gallie in 1987, but kept the name. “We purposefully decided to move to Eau Gallie because we saw its promise as a cultural center, and it has taken some years, but that certainly turned out to be the case,” said Crawford, who still is a member. Her artwork was used for the invitations and poster to promote the anniversary event. After leasing a location for a time, the members decided to invest in a permanent location of their own.
“We’d move into a location, fix it up, and before you knew it they were raising our rent,” Crawford recalled with a smile. “We thought it a prudent step for our future to get our own place.” They found the perfect location at 1470 Highland Ave., but it was not without a challenge. On it was a registered historic home of a member of noted civic leader Joe Wickham’s family. The building was not suitable for relocation or gallery use. The solution? Recycling. Heart pine flooring, rock-strong beams, antique glass windows and other vintage materials are now part of other structures either as functional or artistic elements. Members found financing and renowned developer Andy Pavlokas, himself now part of history, built the current location. With showcasing artwork in mind, light flows in freely. “The gallery itself is a work of art,” said Fifth Avenue president and jewelry artist Lois Mittleman. “We have a reputation as a museum quality location, and our goal is always to make sure the quality of the art displayed reflects that.” The gallery is a vital piece of the cultural center mosaic, said Lisa Packard, executive director of Eau Gallie Arts District (EGAD!) Main Street and First Friday and Founder’s Day coordinator. “EGAD! is very proud of Fifth Avenue Art Gallery’s accomplishment and their role in building the Eau Gallie Arts District,” Packard said.

When most boomers were still toddlers, Broadway’s biggest hits were becoming movie blockbusters. “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Showboat” and “Brigadoon” were some of the musicals that translated successfully to the silver screen, popularizing songs such as “Singin’ In The Rain,” “Three Coins In A Fountain” and “A Star Is Born.” During that time, Carleton Carpenter made a name for himself with his work for MGM studios, notably for “Father of the Bride,” “Summer Stock” and the hit song “Aba Daba Honeymoon.” He worked with Debbie Reynolds in “Two Weeks With Love.” He has toured internationally as Cornelius in “Hello Dolly!” and released his original musical “Northern Boulevard” in 2014. Carpenter appeared on nearly 250 television programs, authored many mystery novels and wrote popular songs. During WWII, he served as one of the Navy Seabees who built the
runway for the first flight of the Enola Gay. Carpenter will appear live on stage at the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse with Margaret Cross, Michael Law and Don and Leeann Cross. Together with pianist Diane Spahr, they will bring to life the golden age of the movie musical. Margaret Cross is an Ohio-born, Florida-raised, New York performer who has been dazzling Cocoa Village Playhouse audiences for years. Most recently, she was a Spotlight Artist in the 2014 Orlando Cabaret Festival. A portion of the proceeds from a 50/50 giveaway will benefit Space Coast Honor Flight, the nonprofit organization that transports area U.S. military veterans to visit the memorials of the wars they fought in, located in our nation’s capital. There is no cost to the veterans for these flights. The Cocoa Village Playhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and underwent a major renovation in 2014, with state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, nearly 600 seats and 21 crystal chandeliers. Yes Valentine’s Day, American Heart Month, Washington’s Birthday, the beginning of Spring Training in baseball. Don’t you just LOVE February? I’ll tell you what I love most about the second month of the year. When it becomes the third month of the year. Yeah, when it’s over. I’m not a fan of cold weather, barren trees, dead flowers or Eastern Standard Time. It’s dreary enough in the month of February without the sun setting a couple hours after lunch. Also, if I’m gonna freeze, can we at least get a little snow in Florida so it’s pretty, and can we keep the sun up until the working troops can get to their cars? I would LOVE to go straight from New Year’s Day to spring break without all the bone chilling, dark days in between. But alas, as the old saying goes, you can’t get to heaven without going through a little hell, so in the same respect, you can’t get to a nice, warm spring break without going through a little winter. There are other special days in February you may not know about. Groundhog Day is Feb. 2 and National Weatherman’s Day is three days later on the fifth. No lie. Hmmm. Wonder why we celebrate the rodent telling the weather first? And can somebody tell me why National Children’s Dental Health Month is the same month we give them all that candy for Valentine’s Day? Can Part D Plan make formulary changes during the year? Dear Lance With the help of a wonderful SHINE counselor, I was very careful and chose my Medicare Drug Plan for 2015 to ensure that all my prescriptions would be covered. However, my friend just told me that the drug plans can change their formularies throughout the year. Is this true? —Rx Cautious

Dear Rx Cautious: The short answer is yes. However, Medicare Prescription Drug Plans cannot change their formularies during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. Plans also cannot change their formularies during the first 60 days of a calendar year. The exception would be if the prescription drug is declared unsafe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). After the first 60 days of the year, plans can make two kinds of changes. Maintenance changes include generic substitutions to brand name drugs when the generic becomes available, as well as utilization tools. An example of a utilization tool would be quantity limits for drugs; e.g., you can only have 30 pills in aorlamp0303.a15 a 30-day period. Plans are required aorlamp0303.a15 to send notices to beneficiaries who are impacted by these changes. aorlamp0303.a15 aorlamp0303.a15
Additionally, the plans must give either a 60-day notice or provide a 60-day transition drug refill. If this is a drug that your doctor feels is medically necessary for you, he or she can help you file an appeal to your drug plan for that reason.

Non-maintenance changes would be any other changes a plan makes to its formulary, such as adding step therapy as a requirement to a drug that doesn’t presently require this. Step therapy is when a plan requires you to try other usually less expensive drugs before they will cover your originally prescribed drug. If you are already taking the drug, you would be protected against this change for the rest of the calendar year; that is, you could get the drug for that particular year. Plans need approval from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to change their formularies. The exception is for any drug that is removed from distribution for safety reasons. In this instance, the plan is required to notify anyone taking the drug of the change.

Love can be better love the second time around — if we are By Linda Wiggins When life handed boomer Laura Bingham of Suntree a lemon, she turned it into the proverbial lemonade, for herself and others. She started going to Divorce Recovery classes at Suntree United Methodist Church in 1996 after her marriage dissolved and after she began to hear repeated chants from friends to “move on.” She couldn’t. “I wasn’t healing from my divorce, even though I had a good job, and it had not been a horrible divorce. I had been married for 23 years and had four children,” Bingham said. Though not divorced, Price Bingham was also taking classes. His wife had died, and he was referred to the classes to deal with his grief, the main focus of the first in a series of three Divorce Recovery courses, DR1, DR2 and DR3. Eventually, the pair began teaching the classes together. Now they do so as husband and wife. “I would caution people that the purpose of Divorce Recovery classes is not to find a new spouse,” said Price Bingham, head of the lay counseling Stephen Ministry program at SUMC. “But the truth of the matter is a lot
of very happily married people are graduates of the class, and yes, some of them met in the classes.” The purpose of the course is to be OK as a person, a single person, to live a fulfilling life without the need of being completed by a partner. “DR1 focuses on grief, and this may take a long while. There is no timetable,” Laura Bingham said. “You have this wonderful group of people who know what you are going through, with volunteer leaders who have also been there.” The courses follow a curriculum using the book “Growing through Divorce,” by Jim Spoke, a pastor. There is also a DVD series by Bill Flanigan, also a pastor. DR2’s content is anchored by “Rebuilding When Your Relationship Ends,” by Dr. Bruce Bishop, a psychologist who saw the need for a rebuilding process. DR3 class is formed as requested. “This is where you look at the ways you are broken that make you attracted to another broken person and create a broken relationship. We get to look at our family of origin and decide we may not want to continue having relationships the way we first learned. This way, you can end the cycle that

Brevard hosted the U.S. president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Ann Panteleakos, with an Aisle of Flags ceremony Jan. 17 at Honor America’s Liberty Bell Museum in Melbourne in front of hundreds of attendees. A whirlwind tour followed with lunch at VFW Post 4206 in Satellite Beach, followed by dinner at VFW Post 10131 in Cape Canaveral, at which Mayor Rocky Randalls presented Panteleakos with a proclamation. Breakfast the following day was hosted by VFW Post 4543 in Satellite Beach, followed by a tour of Kennedy Space Center. “It was an honor to have Ann visit us, and it was a thrill to be able to share her with so many veterans and their loved ones,” said Louise Koser, Florida president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary serving out of Post 4543. By Flora Reigada In Titusville, some buildings are being razed, while others have been raised. Among those being razed is the former Miracle City Mall, on a 32-acre site off U.S. 1. Green Way Demolition Services has been wielding that proverbial wrecking ball and its boom is sure to be music to many ears. Built in the late 1960s, the once thriving mall had fallen into disrepair. Its demolition will make way for the much-anticipated Titus Landing Shopping Center. Demolition of the old mall began with the interior of the old JC Penney. Workers then moved to other areas, salvaging metals for recycling and removing hazardous materials. Demolition is estimated to be completed about the end of February. This will allow for construction of
the 190,000-square-foot first phase of Titus Landing, which is expected to include EPIC Theaters, restaurants, clothing stores and specialty stores. There are also plans for a 55,000square-foot medical facility the Parrish Medical Center will operate in partnership with the Mayo Clinic. According to a spokesperson at County Commissioner Robin Fisher’s office, the Greater Titusville Renaissance gave the project momentum and Fisher made it a priority. “He went to the International Conference of Shopping Centers on his own dime and talked to developers until AG Development (Allen Goins) of Tampa committed to the project.” As Fisher stated in a press release: “Exxcel Project Management and Allen Goins are not only financially committed to the success of this mall, but they have put their reputation
on the line in making sure this deal happens.” The completed shopping should encompass 320,000 square feet. Slated to open for business on Feb. 26 is the new 45,171-square-foot Publix supermarket at Colonial Coast Crossing retail center, at the northwest corner of S.R. 50 and Barna Avenue in Titusville. J. Raymond Construction of Longwood has been the general contractor. The new store will feature a drivethrough pharmacy, floral department and a liquor store. It will also offer the convenience of two entrances, one from S.R. 50 and the other from Barna Avenue. The property has been landscaped with palm trees and shrubbery and store shelves will soon be stocked with food, ready for customers. SL
Friends face foibles in comedic romp By Flora Reigada “Always a Bridesmaid” is as southern as grits and gravy and it’s coming to The 2nd Stage of the Titusville Playhouse, with Mindy Ward directing. According to “The Column Online,” its writers, Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, “have a soft spot for clever comedies with a particular focus on strong southern women of a certain age.” Their plethora of experience in the genre involves film and television and includes a stint as writers for The Golden Girls. “Always a Bridesmaid” explores the question, just how far are you willing to go to keep a promise to a friend. That’s the dilemma faced by four loyal and determined friends in the comedic romp.

The promise, made on the night of their senior prom, was to be bridesmaids in each other’s weddings, no matter what. Many years and marriages later finds the belles in their late 40s, still determined to honor their vow. Friend Libby Ruth Ames is described on the Titusville Playhouse website as “a hopeless romantic, sweet country woman, plain-spoken and guileless.” There is also Monette Gentry, “kinda flashy, kinda trashy and Southern to the bone, flirt.” Her multiple marches down the aisle have threatened to wear a hole in that proverbial carpet. Another of the friends, Charlie Collins, “a tree-hugging, Birkenstockwearing acerbic free spirit,” learns a hard truth about marital bliss. The “token” Yankee among the
friends, Deedra Wingate, “a headstrong, dry-witted, no-nonsense northern transplant,” adds her brassy personality. Scenes take place in the bridal parlor of the Laurelton Oaks, a wedding venue in Virginia. Though snippy and persnickety, its proprietor Sedalia Ellicott is described as “a gregarious, energetic life force.” Kari Ames-Bissette is “a kind-hearted Southern charmer in her late 20s.” Put these all together for lots of laughs and a tall glass of sweet iced tea. Geri & Al Bonavito Geri Bonavito and her husband, Al Bonavito, are a dynamic tag-team duo giving an abundance of their personal time to the Martin Andersen Senior Center (MASC) in Rockledge. They have worked and played there five days each week. The center has tripled its membership in the past six years since she took over the reins as president. There were more than 23,000 visitors in 2014 alone. Geri has continually brought more activities and events in, to the delight of the members and staff, many who can attest to the efficiency and energy of the Bonavitos. Al is a self-proclaimed jack-of-all-trades and has a knack for turning old, ugly, castoff furniture into useful works of art, including a dresser that is now a bench in the ladies’ room and a former bed that has become the greeter’s desk at the center. Some people joke that Geri is the boss and Al is a wonderful follower. When they aren’t at MASC, they might be cleaning their church or at Sam’s House at Pine Island Sanctuary and Nature Center — in fact, in February, they made a tasty soup served as a delicious fundraiser during Pioneer Day to celebrate the life of John Sam. Larry Boudrie Larry Boudrie, an Ohio native, retired 11 years ago from his position as a financial executive with a large electronics firm in Brevard County. He and his wife investigated a way to fill the void in his life and he decided to develop and organize the Shepherd’s Center for people 55 and older. After he presented the educational concept to his church as an outreach ministry, Ascension Lutheran became the first church sponsor to welcome senior students into its classroom facility10 years ago. He has fully committed himself to the ongoing educational programs, growing from seven classes and 42 students to 45 classes and more than 425 participating senior students in eight churches. Boudrie arranges all the schedules, programs, venues and volunteer teachers. He presently distributes more than 600 class programs to local churches, synagogues and libraries and mails as many to active senior members. Classes, held in eight-week sessions, cost $20 and range from foreign language to world history, from cardio exercise to line dancing. Through Boudrie’s efforts, the organization has a user-friendly website. He has inspired seniors to become more active, educationally and socially, by improving their minds and health through participating in the weekly class sessions. I

She has volunteered to work with air shows since 2003. During the 2014 Melbourne Air and Space Show, she proved especially helpful during the pre-air show work in the foundation office, producing more than 2,000 credentials. As a private pilot, air shows have been her passion and she is making plans to jump out of a plane for her 85th birthday. I
Betty Fay Goins Betty Fay Goins is one of those people who gives an extra touch of sophistication, no matter what she is doing. She has been involved in Keep Brevard Beautiful’s Trash Bash and other events for years. She volunteered at Rockledge High School for 16 years and worked with the Rockledge youth football and cheerleading leagues even longer. She is still the Quarterback Club president and provides transportation for all the championship games. As the event chairperson, she helped raise money for Rockledge High’s GradNight. She is the president of the local Top Ladies of Distinction, a nonprofit professional humanitarian organization that focuses on mentoring teens, supporting seniors, improving the status of women, partnership with and the beautification of communities. The breast cancer survivor has been involved in the March for Babies, UNICEF, sings at nursing homes and has encouraged her colleagues to participate in the Relay for Life. She inspires others to follow her as she excels at everything she does, including how she orchestrates and presents condolence meals with grace and elegance so that mourners feel special and loved, despite their grief. Her co-workers describe her as a wonderful inspiration who lifts up anyone who is down. I
Wanda Schultz Wanda Schultz believes in good karma and paying things forward so much that she feels it doesn’t count if the person she helps knows she is the one helping or giving. She has gone so far as to sneak keys from people to slip gifts into locked cars. The founding member of the Rockledge Recreation Open-Space and Conservation (ROC) Foundation believes in community and helped the group build a Rockledge playground in one day, upgrading many more. When asked if she knew anyone who had broken appliances for Boy Scouts to tinker with, she sent two truckloads. She works to fulfill every need she sees. Her favorite project, though, is Bald Beautiful Barbies, which she and Valerie Paul founded. Victorious over her own breast cancer four years ago, Schultz was determined to make the disease less frightening, so she established a B 3 Foundation to collect Barbie and Ken dolls, clean those that need it and refresh the dolls’ wardrobes before replacing their heads with specially designed bald heads. They deliver them to Arnold Palmer and Nemours or other pediatric oncologists and mail them, even overseas, without charge to show that despite battling cancer or other hardships, all children are still beautiful. I

Alice Kreitz Alice Kreitz volunteers her photography skills at community events, has volunteered to teach Current Events classes at Senior Adventures in Learning and the Shepherd Center, but she has distinguished herself among AVET Project (American Veteran Empowerment Team) volunteers in helping the organization provide supportive programs and services to past and present military members and their families. She used her own money to attend and help facilitate retreats for returning combat veterans through the AVET Project Recuperation and Reintegration program, which helps with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Kim Rodriguez Kim Rodriguez has been a dedicated volunteer for seniors in Brevard County for many years through her work with Aging Matters in Brevard. She is passionate and goal oriented in her desire to serve. Rodriguez has co-chaired Aging Matters in Brevard’s annual fundraiser for four years, resulting in a $67,000 revenue increase in 2014. The proceeds from this event help Aging Matters in Brevard provide care for more than 5,400 seniors so they can receive the finest in comprehensive and coordinated services. This support is integral to preserving a safe and healthy community. In addition, she coordinated the entire volunteer effort for Aging Matters in Brevard and took part in a community program purchasing and wrapping gifts for seniors. As a result 1,141 seniors received more than 2,200 holiday gifts in 2014. She also serves on the board of Hospice of St. Francis. She said she believes focusing her volunteer efforts on these two organizations has great value to the seniors she serves in our community. Aging Matters in Brevard considers her an incredible gift and an awesome volunteer. I
Joan Throm Joan Throm, passionate about many things, is an usher at the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts and The Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse and volunteers to clean up bird droppings at Brevard Zoo aviary — among other things. Grieving members at the Church of our Savior in Cocoa Beach have benefited from her psychology doctorate and support for the past 12 years, as do the students of her Cocoa Beach Library art journaling class. What really gets her excited is turning garbage into recyclable materials. When she moved into Courtenay Springs Village in early 2014, she noticed there was no recycling program, so she spent three months establishing a strong reduce, reuse, recycle culture among the residents and staff there. Several times a week, she checks the full-stream bins on each of the 11 floors and personally takes the recycling materials to the ground floor for easy pickup. She believes her recycling efforts are her most powerful volunteering contribution because she feels an urgency to care for Mother Earth. Her friend A friend of hers agrees that the recycling efforts are important, but is always reminding Throm not to overlook the fact that she is also a caregiver to widows and others in the community. I

Intimacy is allowing love to ‘into me, see’
Last month, I asked a relationship coach what steps I might take to strengthen my marriage and grow closer, more intimate with my husband in the presence of financial and other stress we experience as members of the Sandwich Generation. Parenting young children in our 50s, and at the same time being concerned with caring for our aging parents, brings pressure to bear on us as a couple from both upper and lower generations, hence placing us in the middle of the “Sandwich.” This month, licensed clinical social worker Dr. Lorraine Edey’s answer surprised me once again. I keep thinking she’ll tell us to get a babysitter, go out on a date, tip a few glasses of the bubbly for Valentine’s Day and let nature take its course. As if that magically would crumble the invisible walls we’ve built over time and circumstance. Edey gave us a Valentine’s Day assignment, not simply to go on a date, but also to make a “love plan.” We are to write down all the things we desire
The Sandwich Generation Linda Wiggins in a relationship and share them, then pick three we can agree to work on in the coming year, and at the end of the year, celebrate even the smallest accomplishments. Ideally, we don’t even share this list with our partner until the end of the year, because it can lead to unmet expectations. Knowing what we’ve written keeps our minds focused positively on what we want to achieve, without the temptation to judge the other’s performance. “To share a quote that I love, an expectation is a pre-meditated resentment. When we expect so much in our relationship, we’re expecting it from that other person instead of our
self. That creates more distance,” Edey said. Edey then recommended we take the Zero Negativity Pledge, created by her mentor and his wife, Hervelle and Helen Hendrix. It can be done together, but I imagine it can also work if just one person does it. Pledge not to judge or say a negative thing to your spouse, or about your spouse to another person. If we do say something negative or judgmental, we catch ourselves. We actively look for affirmations and encouragements to give. We women do love to nag — er, improve — our husbands. I don’t think I ever have seen this succeed. It leads to the destruction of love. The most extreme form of this is when each person seeks to outdo the other in pointing out how awful and wrong the other is, even with the best of motives — to garner more love and understanding rather than to give more of it. The bottom line is it leads to divorce, not only destruction of the marriage, but the lives of the generations who depend on us.
This Zero Negativity practice takes us from that critical, judgmental, angry place to a more loving, understanding, healthy place not only in our relationship with another but, even more importantly, with ourselves. Change takes time, but if you keep at it magic can happen ... and when magic happens anything is possible, Edey said, adding, this is the space that creates intimacy. Intimacy is that lovely thing that can make the hard path sweeter. The release of “imprisoned splendor,” Edey describes it euphemistically. Those quiet moments when we allow each other to “into me, see.” SL

Eventually, they gave notice that they would give up one apartment and begin living together. Since the community was church affiliated, they were told they could not co-habitate. They moved to another community and lived together for a number of years, dining and dancing. When Charlie died, she missed her handsome companion and periodically called 9-1-1. She “found the young paramedics so handsome, cute,” and loved it when they held her hand. George enjoyed the companionship of married life. He missed his wife, who died after a long illness. He quickly connected with another woman and married. They talked of dream dates and
finally decided on a “round-the-world” cruise. Togetherness for 170 days along with a few other incompatibility factors ended the relationship. Families of older adults often torpedo new relationships. There is concern for the emotional, financial and physical health of a parent. Legal issues, guardianship, incapacity and vulnerability of widowed folks enters the equation. Overprotection by children cheats the parents of a new love, happiness, and companionship that revitalizes and results in a longer life. SL

The date is observed not only in the United States, but also in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. The tradition of exchanging cards, chocolate, gifts and flowers is very popular. According to the Greeting Card Association, Valentine’s Day is the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. That makes it really important to try to make this wonderful holiday celebration a little bit more Earthfriendly and get creative in terms of what is exchanged without losing focus of what the celebration is really about: a demonstration of friendship and love. Small steps toward making Valentine’s Day a little gentler on our Earth may include purchasing cards made from recycled paper, making your own cards and notes from what we already have at home (as shown at

The last one is the most important of all because gestures and attitude really show where our heart is. If you think about it, it is valid to say that the same applies to our planet, our Earth. Our relationship with the Earth goes beyond affection. We depend on a healthy planet to lead healthy lives. Our existence relies on it. And if we want to do something, every small, everyday gesture truly helps the planet. From applying less fertilizer on your lawn and planting native Florida gardens to bringing your reusable bags when you go shopping; from voting to make changes in legislation to better protect the environment to
dropping off your used corks at River Rocks (Rockledge) or Total Wines & More (Viera) to be used in projects — everything counts. As writer Sydney Smith said,
“it is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do little — do what you can.” Whatever that may be, find the best way you can positively contribute and that will make an impact, after all "Humans are an environmental force that impacts Earth’s ecosystems" (Environmental Science for a Changing World) and we do need that force to be positive, to be constructive. Because the stories of the origin of Valentine’s Day “all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and — most importantly — romantic figure,” February became the month we demonstrate our love toward others who are important to us. The Earth should be important to all of us, so this month why not vow to be Earth’s Valentine? SL
