by linda wiggins PHOTOS BY DARRELL woehler People used to get a surprising answer when they would ask Larry Boudrie the secret to his long marriage. He and wife Joyce met in seventh grade and went through the rest of school together, married after high school, then he went on to a successful career that took him all over the world. “I’d say, ‘that’s easy, I’m gone more than half the time,’ ” said Boudrie, named Senior Life Volunteer of the Year at the Senior Safari Boomer Guide Expo & Caribbean Beach Party at Brevard Zoo Feb. 6.

but you’ve got to know how to use it,” she said. This year, Wicks has partnered with JR Rib Shack to add an extra dimension of taste to the festival. The event also includes a gumbo cook-off, children’s activities, vendors and educational demonstrations. It wouldn’t be a true Louisiana experience without music, so Wicks will provide Cajun, Zydeco, jazz and blues. For those eager to hone their culinary skills, Wicks even has a cooking lesson in store. “I will be teaching people how to make gumbo,” she said. For an authentic Cajun experience, guests can opt to order the $80 party table, which will feed six to eight people and includes a tableful of crawfish and fixings, plus Mardi Gras beads, pictures and a chance to win a gift basket of Cajun products. “This is all about letting the good times roll,” Wicks said. For more information on Cayenne’s Cajun and Creole Festival, call 321-591-3414. SL

Anjanette Wicks was in New Orleans this February not just for the pleasure of attending Mardi Gras but also to gather up the spicy ingredients she will need for Cayenne’s Cajun and Creole Festival, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, March 14, at Blinds of All Kinds and JR Rib Shack at 3450 U.S. Hwy. 1 in Rockledge. Cayenne’s Seafood is Wicks’ Louisiana-style catering business, and the festival offers the perfect opportunity to sample the tasty delicacies. Wicks has quite the menu planned, and it is crawfish intensive. Start with the spicy boiled crawfish that is her signature dish and follow it with crawfish pies and crawfish and grits. Continue with jambalaya, gumbo, red beans and rice, grilled gator sausage, jerk chicken, ribs and pulled pork and blackened seafood salad. Finish the meal with — what else — that iconic New Orleans sweet, beignets. “The festival gives me the opportunity to bring the true authentic flavor of Louisiana to Brevard,” Wicks said. Wicks has the perfect pedigree for the job. Born and raised just outside of New Orleans, Wicks still holds the Big Easy close to her heart. “My family still lives in the same house where I grew up,” said the Viera resident. As a military wife, Wicks had plenty of opportunity to travel the world, and everywhere she went, she searched for the tastes of home. When By Attorney she couldn’t find dishes that would TRUMAN SCARBOROUGH suit her Louisiana 239 Harrison Street, Titusville, FL palate, she decided to make them and thus For A Complimentary Copy was born Cayenne’s Seafood, named Phone 321 267 — 4770 after Wicks’ favorite pepper. “It’s really great,

I get a familiar greeting at this time of year when I visit medical offices, senior centers, retirement communities and other select high-traffic areas frequented by boomers and seniors. “Did you bring us more Boomer Guides?” The popular annual Senior Life publication of clubs, services, resources and features was released at the Feb. 6 Senior Safari Boomer Guide Expo at the Brevard Zoo, and since then it has been flying off the stands. Lastly, I’d like to give a shout out of congratulations to our first ever Volunteer of the Year Award winner Larry Boudrie and all the nominees. Himself retired and idle, he looked for a way help others feel useful and intellectually challenged. Ten years later, the Shepherd’s Center Beachside is bustling with boomers and seniors who take classes, enjoy companionship and elevate their minds so they can, in Larry’s words, live a full life until their last breath. Thank you for attending

By Linda Wiggins PHOTOS BY DARRELL WOEHLER If you were traveling in the vicinity of Interstate 95 and Wickham Road in Viera and witnessed traffic gridlock and didn’t know what it was, then you certainly were not among the thousands of attendees of the Senior Safari Boomer Expo & Caribbean Party at Brevard Zoo Feb. 6. Untold more would have taken part but were turned away for excess capacity. “This is a great crowd and even though it’s jammed, everyone is in a party mood,” said Lenny Morgan, who played live steel drum music with full Caribbean accompaniment all day in the zoo’s café area. Mark Dobson the One-Man Band entertained on the zoo’s main stage. The expo released the 2015 edition of the popular Boomer Guide, the annual Senior Life publication filled with community resources, clubs and organizations, support groups and a dedicated veterans resources section, along with business and senior living listings. Nearly two dozen Space Coast residents were picked to model for the guide and were hopeful to learn that day whether they’d made the award-winning cover page. “What an honor to be picked,” said Mary Denni, who posed on the cover along with Christine Bourdeau and Bourdeau’s pup Mango. Denni and her husband, Tom, were among eight couples who renewed their wedding vows on the veranda of the Nyami Nyami River Lodge main expo area overlooking giraffes in the newly expanded Expedition Africa exhibit. Along with host sponsors Senior Life and the Brevard Zoo, which provided free entry to attendees 55 and older, the expo was supported by Wuesthoff Health System, InspiredLiving at Palm Bay and Health First. Exploration Tower in Port Canaveral, the location of Senior Life’s Nov. 6 Boomer Bash & Senior Expo and Veterans Salute, provided a grand prize package for four to fully experience Brevard’s newest landmark. As with the Feb. 6 and Nov. 6 expos, the 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 13 Forever Young Senior Expo at the Brevard Museum of History & Natural Science will provide free admission for people 55 and older to a destination location that is made all the more special for the day. For more information, call 321-242-1235 or go to myseniorlife.com. SL

Conrad J. Wohltmann of Cocoa was among the 2,863 attendees that were invited to sign a surfboard at the entrance to the Caribbean-themed Senior Safari. The surfboard will hang in the new Senior Life offices.

An additional $10 covers coffee, tea and bottled water all semester long. “Older people need a reason to get up and get out, something that drives them to get out of their house,” Boudrie said. “This is something they can do to go and be challenged, to go and make new friends, mainly to still be alive and feel like you have something to contribute, even a class on current events where you have something to talk about. What you build is companionship, people with like interests getting together and forming lasting relationships.” The teachers benefit as well, reconnecting with their own sense of

purpose. Many of the teachers are actual retired teachers and experts in their fields, on every topic imaginable. “We all have interests and talents developed through our lifetime. We love when someone comes to us with an idea of what they’d like to share,” said Boudrie, volunteer center director and teacher with the all-volunteer effort funded and housed in seven churches in the area. Leonard Petkoff was the perfect example. He was on Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s staff, helped write the constitution for the Japanese, and like many historic figures and kings and queens of industry, he’d retired to an unassuming life on the Space Coast. He took a Shepherd’s Center class and then Boudrie challenged him to lead one of his own. He did so, along with his wife, Ruth, who shared her doctorate in psychology by teaching popular classes on how the mind works. Leonard Petkoff taught a class right up to the day he died instantly from a heart attack at age 96. “That’s the way I want to go,” Boudrie said, “not sitting around in a rocking chair waiting to die, but vibrant, enthusiastic, useful and enjoying life until my last breath.” For more information or to register for classes, go to myshepherdcenter. org, or call 321-610-3937 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Viera woman celebrates 99th birthday with three parties BY MIKE GAFFEY When Lucille Kellner turned 99 on Jan. 17, her friends and neighbors at Indian River Colony Club celebrated the milestone by throwing her three birthday parties instead of one. “I had three birthday cakes,” Kellner said. “Two were carrot cakes. That’s my favorite. I love carrot cake.” Kellner, who moved to IRCC about 13 years ago with her now-deceased husband, Ed, received books, flowers, balloons and many phone calls from wellwishers on her special day. But “the best gift was the love of all my friends,” she said. It was a memorable day for the Massachusetts native, who was born while Woodrow Wilson was president and World War I was raging in Europe. Kellner’s parents died before she turned 3, and she was raised by an uncle. Years later, Kellner met her future husband, a Navy veteran who would go on to serve in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. “He was very entertaining, very funny,” she said. ”A very smart man, but he never bragged about himself. He’d do anything to help anybody if they needed it.”

SENIOR LIFE Amy Alexander

Lucille Kellner blows out candles on a cake during one of the three birthday parties she had when she turned 99 in January.

The couple had four children and lived in San Diego before moving to Brevard County. “My husband selected a place that was going to be good for me if he wasn’t around,” Kellner said. “He knew I’d be well taken care of. It’s a good place over here.” At her home, Kellner enjoys watching squirrels frolic outside her window and going for walks around the neighborhood. A former tennis player, she loves watching tennis on TV. And she was excited to see her home state New England Patriots win the Super Bowl. “My health is good,” Kellner said, admitting she has a sweet tooth and has a fondness for candy, fudge and éclairs. “Friends bring me éclairs because they know I like them,” she said. “I do share with them, though.” Amy Alexander, one of Kellner’s caregivers, called her an “amazing” woman and a voracious reader who finishes 10 to 20 books a month. “I love to read. I love to learn,” Kellner said. “I love to be with people who can teach me good things.” So what’s the secret to Kellner’s long life? “I believe in positive thinking,” she said. “And I have many good friends who surround me and you can’t beat that.” SL

Boomer Guide 2015 Now being delivered

Annual Boomer Guide is a ‘manual’ on how to build a great life

SENIOR LIFE Linda Wiggins

Frank and Mary Ann Tantillo receive the new Boomer Guide from Maureen Reeder at Indian River Colony Club in Viera.

by linda wiggins Mary Ann and Frank Tantillo make it a team effort to get the people they have loved throughout their travels to surround them in the life they love on the Space Coast. Their secret weapon? The annual Boomer Guide. “It’s got everything you need to build a great live for yourself. What are your interests? There’s a club for that. What are your needs? There’s a resource for that,” Frank Tantillo said. The avid volunteers also like the variety of nonprofit group activities listed. So much of happiness comes from reaching out to help others, Mary Ann Tantillo said. “If you have free time, look around you, find a need and fill it. Being retired is not just about doing all the recreational activities you could desire, though that is fantastic,” she added. “It’s really important to know what is going on around you and to do what you can to make the community a better place. That will make you feel a part of it and enjoy your life all the more.” The Tantillos live at Indian River Colony Club in Viera, where IRCC spokeswoman Maureen Reeder makes

sure there is always a supply of Boomer Guides on hand. “We have a lot of activities here,” Reeder said of the community that caters to the needs of but is not limited to retired U.S. military officers and spouses. “But the secret to happiness is making sure you are connected to the greater community as well.” It’s one thing to build a great life for yourself, but it’s also important to roll with the changes in life that are inevitable, Reeder said. “When a couple becomes a single, that can be an opportunity to more deeply discover our own interests and meet others with similar likes,” Reeder said. Mary Ann Tantillo loved the image on the Boomer Guide cover of what looks like two gal pals having fun in a tropical setting, their toes in the sand. “I plan on sending the Boomer Guide to some friends in the North with the hard winters we no longer have to deal with,” she said. “It’s not to gloat or rub it in, but to let them know that when they, too, have had enough, there’s a great life to live down here and here’s a manual on how to build it.” SL

Group plans ‘historic’ effort to honor military members lost in Iraq, Afghanistan BY MIKE GAFFEY A Satellite Beach group is planning an ambitious and unique way to memorialize all U.S. forces who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. Project “Remembering Our Heroes” is finalizing plans to assemble individual memorial displays in Satellite Beach for all 6,280 military personnel killed in the two conflicts, founder Floyd R. Beech said. Donors will personally assemble the displays at the vacant site of the former Kash N Karry supermarket at 1071 South Patrick Drive in January. The displays will then be shipped to American Legion posts across the country, and presented to families of the fallen during a nationwide ceremony at 3 p.m. Aug. 26, 2016, Beech said. The group will hold a major fundraiser and pledge drive from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 5 at Lou’s Blues night club in Indialantic. A retired Air Force veteran who became a State Department diplomat in 1994, Beech has been working on the project since 2008, motivated by having seen losses of American forces, including several close friends, while serving in various capacities in Iraq and Afghanistan. When U.S. combat operations in Afghanistan officially ended Dec. 28, the Satellite Beach resident knew it was time to proceed. “It’s the phase three position and I can move forward because we have our beginning and our end,” the now semiretired Beech said. Each donor will assemble one of 7,000 flag-shaped display cases that will feature seven polished rifle casings, a “Fallen Hero Remembered” medallion and engraved nameplate designed by Beech and provided by the Highland Mint in Melbourne. “They will sign the back of the display, and their contact information will be inserted inside, so when it’s presented to the family, they can call

and thank them,” he said. “It’s a very personalized project.” For their efforts, participants also will receive a specially designed keychain from the Highland Mint. Each will have the “Fallen Hero Remembered” artwork on the front and “Pledge Not Forgotten 2016” on the back, Beech said. Donors will be asked to pledge ahead one dollar a week for the next 50 weeks, Beech said. In 2016, the group will contact donors and call in the pledges. Fundraisers will build on the amount received from pledges, he noted. Beech hopes to secure more than

7,000 pledges from residents in Brevard County, which lost 10 service members in Iraq and Afghanistan. “There will be groups, schools, businesses — everybody’s going to be supportive,” he said. “Anyone who ever served in uniform in Brevard County probably will want to get on board with this.” Building materials for the South Patrick Drive location will be donated by local establishments and volunteers from Patrick Air Force Base’s civil engineering team will be asked to volunteer time to do the minimal construction work, Beech said. Leftover materials will be donated to Habitat for Humanity “and anyone who may need it, so nothing’s going to go to waste,” he added. Beech is also overseeing the restoration of a 1957 Chevrolet pickup, which will be used on tours. Iraq and Afghanistan wounded warriors and veterans will be able to sign the metallic blue truck, expected to make its debut at the 2016 Daytona 500, he said. Despite the challenges of such an undertaking, Beech is confident that Brevard County will be up to the task. “As soon as the word gets out, we will have more than we need to make this a success,” he said. “This will be a historic achievement.” For more information, go to rememberingourheroes.com or call 321-890-4100. Senior, veteran support recruited for student-led flag bill By Linda Wiggins Seniors and veterans are asked to travel to Tallahassee to help lobby state legislators Tuesday, March 10 in support of a student-led bill to ensure that American flags purchased by local and state governments are made in America, from U.S. made materials. Participation from seniors and veterans is crucial, said Viera High School JROTC senior Army instructor retired Lt. Col. Tim Thomas. “The students have done amazing things, but what’s really helping is getting our seniors and veterans behind them,” Thomas said. Thomas spoke at the Nov. 14 Veterans Salute at the King Center that opened the Senior Life Boomer Bash & Senior expo and connected with senior and veterans groups he said have been “vital” to the movement gaining momentum. “These groups have been writing letters to our legislators and they have taken notice,” Thomas said. Former Viera High and Eau Gallie High schools teacher Matt Susin, who launched the effort last year, and Thomas will travel to Tallahassee March 10 to organize individuals and groups taking part, and are asking supporters to meet at 10:30 a.m. March 9 at the Florida Education Association building at 213 South Adams Street in Tallahassee. Last month, House Bill 225, sponsored by Rep. Bob Cortes, was approved in the Government Affairs Committee and Senate Bill 590, sponsored by Sen. Thad Altman, was approved in the Community Affairs Committee last month and the bills are set for a vote this month. Thomas and Susin commended the Military Officers Association of America Cape Canaveral Chapter, which sponsors the Senior Life Veterans Salute that will move to Port Canaveral’s Exploration Tower Nov. 6, the Military Affairs Council of the Veterans Memorial Center on Merritt Island and the Purple Hearth Association. For more information on the trip, email or call Thomas at thomas.timothy@brevardschools.org or 321-223-1016 or Susin at matthewsusin@gmail.com or 321-917-4780. SL

Ballroom dancing leads to romance, then marriage By Rosemary H. Lynn Twenty-two years ago this past November, a widow and a widower were practicing their dance steps at the Polish American Dance Club in Sebastian with their respective partners. Betty had been watching Bill Trainor out of the corner of her eye and liked what she saw. He was handsome, dapper even. And he was an elegant dancer. Being a widow, she thought she’d make her move right then and there. Betty walked over to where Trainor was talking to his dance companion. She had left her own partner standing by the bar and walked over to Bill, and asked him to dance. He excused himself from his partner and took Betty in his arms. That was all it took. They spent the rest of the evening dancing together. “It was love at first sight,” said Betty. “At least for me.” Bill nodded in agreement. The two of them looked like love-sick teenagers as they sat together at Viera Manor where they now live. At 93, Bill is still a handsome gentleman who made sure to wear his best suit for his interview. Betty has a twinkle in her eye that belies her 89 years on earth. When asked what kept them together for the past 22 years, Bill spoke up. “We have never, ever raised our voices at one another,” he said. “And we never will.” As a young man, Bill served in the United States Marine Corps. He traveled around the world in that short time and

World War II was the first war where U.S. soldiers had to fight while there was an epidemic. He was spared from getting sick. Bill’s first wife was an officer in the military in the 82nd Airborne. She became ill but the Veterans Administration would not accept her as a patient because she was female. Bill went to the Attorney General’s office and he was told there was

It was passed and from then on, spouses were granted abatements to have the same privileges as their husbands for health care at the V.A. As for Betty and Bill, they enjoy life at Viera Manor, especially during dance nights when they can still practice their

dance steps together. There are plenty of other things for them to do and they have met a lot of great people at the assisted living facility. Betty has three daughters and a son who visit and Bill has two sons and a daughter. They consider themselves blessed to have one another and to share their mutual love of music — and dancing — with one another. Viera Manor is located at 3325 Breslay Dr. in Melbourne. SL

KEENANS WITH GRANDSONS

Snowbird’s Spring Training dream job is perfect fodder for story time BY MIKE GAFFEY Gerry Gleckel has plenty of stories to tell about his Washington Nationals when he spends time with his five granddaughters and one grandson — just three shy of a baseball team. He gets to travel with the Nats. The job is temporary. The hours are few. The pay is minimum wage. But when Gleckel goes to work, he feels like he’s walking onto a field of dreams. now a lieutenant colonel stationed in the Washington, D.C. area. During a visit to Nationals Park in the nation’s capital, Gleckel met with a team representative, who contacted Viera officials, which led to his hiring. Gleckel is one of about 60 people who work for Dave McConnell, director of game day operations for Spring Training since 2001. McConnell oversees ushers, ticket takers and bag checkers, but not concessions or souvenir shop workers. Working at the stadium has enabled Gleckel to strike up friendships with some Nationals players. Gleckel even took a few players to Kennedy Space Center to watch launches, with passes obtained by his son. “That was fun,” Gleckel said. “In spite of the fact that they’re living the dream of being big league baseball players, seeing a launch is something they’ve never done before. And a nighttime launch is a pretty special thing.” Gleckel has high hopes for Washington this season. The defending National League East Division champions bolstered an already potent pitching staff by signing former Detroit Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer in the offseason. “They’ve clearly got one of the best pitching staffs in Major League Baseball,” Gleckel said. “You never know what’s going to happen during the year — who’s going to get injured, who’s going to have a down year — but they’ve got a pretty darn good team and I think their chances are very good.” Gleckel is unsure whether he’ll follow the Nationals to West Palm Beach if and when the team moves to a new stadium. “That’s a tough, tough decision,” he said. “My wife likes to play golf and she’s pretty dug in up here with friends during the past four years and she really likes it here. West Palm Beach is a very big, broad area, whereas the Viera-Rockledge area is a lot smaller with less traffic. There are some things you have to think about when you make those hard decisions.” Despite the impending move, Gleckel remains a Nationals fan and a co-owner of season tickets. He attends about 15 regular-season games a year. “Mark Lerner and the folks who own the team, and Mike Rizzo, the general manager, are really nice people, and they know what they’re doing in terms of organizing the team and keeping it going,” he said. “They’re very fan-oriented. I think (Space Coast Stadium) is one of the most fanfriendly in Major League Baseball. It’s great being here.” SL

Senior Life presents Something for everyone at Lamplighter Village

by MARY BROTHERTON

SENIOR LIFE COURTESY LAMPLIGHTER VILLAGE

Lamplighter Village residents enjoy monthly entertainment and regular activities at their amenity-rich community in Melbourne.

With 639 homes, Lamplighter Village activities director Jean Miller stays busy. “We have something going on every day,” she said. The lakefront community for 55 and older adults has been a seasonal home to some and a permanent home for others for more than 30 years. The built-in amenities might be enough to fill the few vacancies in the manufactured home community, but Miller said she knows the community itself is the big draw. Mature trees and four lakes set the backdrop for a year-round heated pool. Tennis, billiards, miniature golf, shuffleboard, a ceramic studio, a variety of card games, ballroom dancing and bingo represent the tip of the activities iceberg at Lamplighter Village. Residents use a business center, weight and fitness room and commercial kitchen. Monthly ice cream socials and breakfasts are very popular. Cal-Am, the property management company, provides top-quality entertainment each month for residents and their guests. Whether it’s casino nights, murder mystery dinners, or ethnic entertainment featuring Irish feasts or Greek nights, these events fill quickly. March’s special event will be dueling pianos from 176 Keys Fun Pianos. More than 40 weekly activities include bunco, cribbage, line dancing, dominoes, qi gong, Mah-jongg and a newly-formed veterans club. Miller said, “We hold a ladies’ luncheon each month and we’re having an Easter egg hunt for the grandchildren coming up.” For more information on Lamplighter Village, call 321-254-0303 or stop by 500 Lantern Blvd. in Melbourne. Sign-lighting marks a bright milestone in Cocoa Beach Pier renovation BY MIKE GAFFEY Across Brevard County, aging Space Race-era landmarks are vanishing. The Glass Bank in Cocoa Beach is now a pile of rubble. Miracle City Mall in Titusville is being torn down. And the old AFTAC building at Patrick Air Force Base will soon face the wrecking ball. But the weather-battered, 53-year-old Cocoa Beach Pier is showing signs of a comeback. Westgate Resorts executives David Siegel and Jim Gissy, who bought the iconic wooden pier in 2014, celebrated the completion of $1 million in improvements to the pier on Feb. 11 by lighting up a new 27-foot-tall sign at its entrance. Westgate, the world’s biggest privately owned timeshare operator, plans to spend a total of $4 million during the next four years to make the pier — a designated historic landmark — more family friendly. “We’re going to make it bigger and better than it’s ever been before,” Siegel, president and CEO of Orlando-based Westgate, said of the pier moments before the $70,000 sign was illuminated for the first time. In addition to the sign, workers already have renovated the bathrooms, refurbished and repainted the 800-foot-long pier’s exterior, replaced about 1,800 feet of pier railings and supports, replaced all exterior signs, added signs detailing the history of the pier and nearby attractions and communities, removed damaged concrete from the plaza, installed awnings above boardwalk seats and added sea turtle-friendly lighting and sea oats to landscaping around the pier’s parking lot. The new owners plan to renovate the Boardwalk Bar and Restaurant, Keith’s Oyster Bar and Sea Dogs, convert Pelican’s Restaurant to Drafts Sports Bar and Grill and turn the old Atlantic Grill to a fine-dining seafood restaurant with a dance floor. Both Drafts and the seafood restaurant will feature floor-to-ceiling windows for improved beach and ocean views. The owners upgraded retail facilities, renovating Trader Rick’s Marketplace and adding a retail outlet. Siegel also envisions a private beach club with a swimming pool and shower facilities for visitors bused in from Westgate resorts or Port Canaveral to the pier, which attracts about 750,000 people a year. Siegel said he and Jim Gissy, executive vice president of sales and marketing, inherited a rich legacy when they purchased the pier from the family of its builder, local businessman Rick Stottler. “This is a big responsibility we took on and we’re going to do the best we can and make you all proud of us,” Siegel said. Healthy Recipe Skinny Green Bean Casserole INGREDIENTS

1 14-oz bag of frozen whole green beans (or about 4 cups fresh) 1 8-oz pkg mushrooms, thinly sliced (about 1 cup) 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 tsp garlic, chopped

For Sauce

1 cup plain low-fat Greek yogurt (or low-fat sour cream) 1 tsp corn starch 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp pepper 1 pkt stevia (or 1/2 tsp sweetener of choice)

For Topping

1 tbs minced dried onion 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs (or gluten free bread crumbs if gluten intolerant) The estimated total time to make this recipe is 40 to 45 minutes.

1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a large baking dish with cooking spray and set aside. Meanwhile, spray a large skillet with cooking spray. Saute the onions, garlic and mushrooms in 1/2 cup water, stirring occasionally until the water is completely evaporated. Remove onions and mushrooms from pan and place in a medium bowl.

2

If using frozen green beans, thaw the green beans in the microwave for 5 to 10 minutes, or until thawed. If using fresh, steam green beans, snip off the ends and place beans in a large pot of boiling water for about 5 minutes or until tender, and drain. Add green beans to the bowl with the mushrooms and onions. Let cool to room temp before adding sauce mixture.

3 4

In a small bowl, mix ingredients together to make the sauce. Add sauce to the green beans and toss until everything is well coated. Add everything to prepared baking dish. Mix topping in a small bowl and sprinkle evenly over the top. Bake uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes or until topping is golden brown. Serve warm.

Caregiving Counts Definition

Budget:

An estimate of income and expenditure for a set period of time. Most budgets are severely impacted when someone makes the decision to become a caregiver to a parent.

Question of the month

Q

Mom’s mentally fine but several serious falls have me concerned, so I moved in with her. I know caregivers need to take breaks to avoid burnout and I’ve read it’s a good idea to get away from time to time but when I moved in with Mom, I gave up my income and I used my savings on the move. How can I afford to keep myself healthy and sane?

A

Consider your talents and those of your friends and family members. Do you know a hair stylist or massage therapist? Perhaps you can trade home cooking for a few hours of personal indulgence. If you can get away alone, visit a nearby library or museum. If your mom wants to join you, turn it into an adventure instead of a chore and encourage her to expand her horizons with day trips to places you’ve both wanted to visit. If you can’t possibly get away because of transportation or other concerns, you can engage in disposable or intangible activities. Take a walk, sing, dance — alone if you must — immerse yourself in social media or get lost in an online support group. Plant a garden, if only in your mind. Read, write, sort through old photographs, watch old movies. It’s not so important that you physically get away as it is to mentally take yourself away and indulge your senses on a regular basis.

DAR seeks members The Commodore John Barry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is conducting a membership drive as part of a nationwide celebration to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. All women who can document descent from a Revolutionary War Patriot are encouraged to consider the many benefits of joining the vibrant service organization, which has promoted historic preservation, education and patriotism since its formation in 1890. “Our chapter, which was organized in January 2012, carries out the important mission of the National Society here on the local level,” said Chapter Regent Deb Plaag. “We are eager to welcome new members to our chapter, and we have volunteers available to help them research and complete their genealogy in order to apply for membership.” Since its founding 125 years ago, more than 940,000 women have been inducted into membership. During the current three-year administration coinciding with the 125th anniversary celebration, the organization has issued a challenge to complete 10 million hours of service. Entertaining on a budget

When you are a caregiver, you must be mindful of more than your own needs. You consider the one you are providing care for, your spouse, siblings, friends and, eventually, you may think of yourself. Sometimes you just want to have a little fun and entertain — but with the budget constraints that come with caregiving, it may feel impossible. It’s not. As long as having family or friends over does not interfere with the safety and health of your loved one, there are many ways to make it work. Pot luck dinners or soup exchanges are always fun. If you want to keep the gathering small, consider inviting grandchildren/greatgrandchildren only for a tea party where leftovers are served on small dishes. Senior Life Beyond the Curb Marcia Booth

President & Founder, Recycle Brevard As part of my Environmental Education class, we use the book “Environmental Science for a Changing World” by Houtman, Karr and Interlandi. That is a wake-up call kind of book that touches on many different levels of change needed for us to keep our planet healthy and our (and other) species as part of it. It stresses that “we must significantly change the way we do things in order to become sustainable as a society.” And what is being sustainable anyway? “By definition,” the book goes on, “sustainable development [is the kind of development that] meets present

Beyond the Curb Unless…

needs without preventing future generations from meeting their needs. It should enhance the quality of life without damaging the environment that helps meet those needs.” And shouldn’t that be the principle anyone and any business live by? That takes me to a famous story written and published in 1971 by one of my favorite authors whose birthday is celebrated in March: “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss. In that story, written more than 40 years ago, the Once-ler chopped down every single truffula tree to feed his production line of thneeds. Pollution forced fish to move to different waters, made birds sick and drove the poor Brown Barba-loots away — without the trees they had neither food nor shelter. The greedy Once-ler focused only on his immediate gains and did not think about the future or the destruction he was causing. All was gone — and so was his business in the end. The Once-ler did not know about his ecological footprint — defined as the acreage of land needed to provide resources for his business and

assimilate its waste — or about natural interest — “the amount of readily [nature-]produced resources that we could use and still leave enough behind to, in time, replace what we took” — or even about a cradle-to-cradle business management fashion where companies take environmental responsibility a step further than what is required by law. He lost his business and everyone else lost their community, their home. Could that happen in real life? Why not? Businesses that practice cradle-to-cradle management are not the majority. The ones that choose to go down that road take charge into making their product the most sustainable it can be by utilizing highquality, durable, non-toxic materials and planning the life of their product from production to after consumers are done with it, in a closed-loop system. In this kind of system, “waste becomes raw material once again” and the cycle goes on always with the concept of renewability in mind. More and more businesses are becoming aware of their important role in our world and their part in helping us all become a more sustainable society, but not many have changed their management style and carry on working in the same mainstream economics as usual. The Story of Stuff Project (storyofstuff.org) created movies that depict the issues we face with our current mainstream economics

— not taking into account other (mainly social and environmental) costs associated with production like waste, pollution, working conditions, and so on; assuming that natural and human resources are infinite or easily replaceable; assuming economic growth will continue indefinitely and that the most important aspect of production is immediate/short-term gains. We still have a long way to go. “The United States, for instance, has a particularly high per capita (per person) footprint in that it requires much more land area to support each person than it actually possesses — the country is forced to import resources from other countries, and even export some waste. In fact, if the 7 billion people who populate the planet all lived like the average person in the United States, we would need the landmass of six or more Earths to sustain everyone.” That revelation is included in the book printed in 2013 and, as far as I could find, our carbon footprint per capita is still ranked within the top 10 highest ones these days. It is time to realize that we can do business that is good for the economy, good for the people, and is also good for the environment. It is time to change and change starts within each one of us because “unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Unless, just unless. SL

Filling up is a gas

I’ve been thinking about the “Good Ol’ Days” a lot lately. For example, remember when you would go to a gas station and out would run a team of guys in nicely pressed shirts (usually) and all you did was roll down your window and say “Fill it up,” roll your window back up and start counting out about $5 to pay for it. Those finelooking young men would clean your windshield, check the air in your tires and check the oil. After you gave them your $5, they would give you a set of glasses or dishes or a six pack of cola. I told my kids about that and they gave me that cockeyed smirk that goes with the word, “Huh?” These days you don’t even get a human. You have to deal with a computerized pump that makes you take a quiz before you can pump the first drop. I went to fill up and had to take a test before it would let me spend money. You’ve seen it. “Is this a debit or credit card? Please wait. What is your billing zip code? Please wait. Do you want a car wash? Please wait. Do you want a receipt?” No. What I want is to fill my tank and leave. Finally the machine gives you permission to access its precious, overpriced gas but first you have to choose which grade. Whew. I’m mentally exhausted before I even start. So what’s next? You want to use the restroom and before the door will unlock a computer screen gives you a quiz? “Are you a man or a woman? Please wait. If a man, would you prefer to stand or sit? Please wait. Number 1 or Number 2? Please wait. Do you want to wash your hands or sanitize? Please wait. Paper towels or blow dry?” If you answer all the questions correctly, the door will unlock and you can go inside, if you haven’t already gone outside. Boy do I miss the Good Ol’ Days. SL

Do I have to take Medicare insurance at age 65? Dear Lance I will soon be age 65 and eligible for Medicare. I enjoy my job and plan to remain employed after 65 and will continue to have the same group health insurance through my current employer. I pay part of the premium. Do I have to take Medicare when I am already insured through my work? I would like to avoid paying a second health insurance premium to Medicare, but I have heard that there is a penalty if I do not start Medicare when I am eligible for it. — Not ready to retire

Ask Lance Lance P. Jarvis SHINE Dear Not Ready: You are fortunate to be enjoying your work and to have the option to continue your employment. Each year more Americans choose to stay employed after age 65 for a variety of reasons. To answer your inquiry, you do not have to enroll in Medicare. Medicare is optional for someone in your situation. However, please consider the following when making your decision as to whether or not to become a Medicare beneficiary. Original Medicare has two parts. Part A covers in-patient hospital stays and has no premium for most beneficiaries. Part B covers outpatient services such as doctors, blood work and other diagnostic testing. In 2015, the Part B premium is $104.90. You can enroll in Part A without enrolling in Part B. Look carefully at your cost of your employer’s group health insurance premium and the benefits it provides. In recent years, many employers have shifted more of the costs of health insurance to their employees. Employees are often faced with higher premiums, a higher annual deductible and must pay a greater share of the costs for their medical care. You will want to compare the costs and benefits of the employer health insurance to those of Medicare. After doing such a comparison, many people decide not to enroll in Medicare Part B and avoid the Part B premium. However, in some cases, it

is advantageous to drop the employer policy and enroll in Medicare. In other instances it may make sense to enroll in Parts A and B and stay enrolled in the group health insurance. A SHINE counselor can help you make this judgment. If you have a spouse that is covered by your current insurance, this will also affect your decision. It is to your advantage to enroll in Part A. This is because there is no premium for Part A coverage if you have had 40 quarters of employment and paid Medicare taxes while working. Medicare Part A would be the secondary payer to your group health insurance as long as you are employed and have the employer policy. If you are admitted to a hospital, your group health insurance would pay first up to the limit of its benefits and then Medicare would pay all or some of the balance. There is no late enrollment penalty for delaying your enrollment in Medicare Part B after age 65 as long as you are working and have group health insurance. When you retire or your group health insurance ends (whichever comes first), you will have eight months to enroll in Medicare Part B without paying a penalty. SHINE counselors are highly trained and experienced to assist you in understanding and making Medicare decisions. SL

Master mixer stockpiles Grammys at his Merritt Island home BY MIKE GAFFEY February’s Grammy winners don’t have a thing on boomer Mike Couzzi. He’s won so many Grammy awards, he’s lost count. “I’ve probably won 13 or 14, something like that,” the Merritt Island-based master engineer said of the prestigious music awards and certificates that fill a trophy case in his home mastering studio. For the past three decades, Couzzi has engineered and mixed hundreds of albums from such artists as Frank Sinatra, Gloria Estefan and the Pet Shop Boys. He won his first Grammy in 1991 and earned some of his other Grammys for work with Estefan, Christina Aguilera, jazz great Arturo Sandoval and guitarist Carlos Santana. Now a master engineer — someone who takes a finished mix of a song and standardizes it so that it sounds the same when played in different systems such as a car stereo, a home stereo or a boom box — Couzzi works from home, finishing artists’ music sent to him online. “Basically everything’s done over the internet nowadays,” he said. “All the files are transferred over the Internet and then everything is done inside the computer, and then you send back the final product to the client on the Internet as well.”

The Los Angeles native first became interested in music and electronics at age 12, when his grandfather gave Couzzi his giant console stereo. “I immediately began taking it apart to see how it worked,” Couzzi said. “I then reassembled it in smaller boxes and built new speaker cabinets that I could use in my room.” Couzzi got his first recording job in 1978 when he was hired as a recording technician at Wally Heider Studios in Hollywood. There, he set up sessions and hung out with such performers as the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, the Bee Gees, Michael Jackson and Bob Dylan. A few years later, Couzzi and a longtime friend moved to Fort Lauderdale and opened their own recording studio. Couzzi started building a reputation as an independent engineer by working at larger studios. Couzzi later teamed up with a producer at the forefront of the growing Miami pop dance music scene and worked on “Exposure” by Exposé, which spawned four top-10 singles and was certified double platinum. “At this time, my career really took off and I was very much in demand,” he said. “The Miami music scene was really exploding and I was right in the middle of it.” In 1999, Couzzi won a Grammy for his work on tracks for Santana’s

Mike Couzzi displays a favorite among his dozen-plus Grammys. “Supernatural” album, which earned eight Grammys and was named Album of the Year. “He’s very demanding, he’s very driven,” Couzzi said of Santana. “He’s been doing this a long time and he’s quite an amazing talent.” In 2011, Couzzi and his wife, Julie, and their two children, Jonah and Lana, moved from South Florida to Merritt Island. He converted part of the garage of their new home into his studio. “I miss being able to go into a big studio, record all the musicians and then do the mixing on an analog console, where now I’m mixing everything digital inside a computer and I’m by myself,” Couzzi said. “But the advantages are that it allowed me to get out of Miami to move here and to have more independence and flexibility in my working environment, where before I didn’t have that. I enjoy having my own controlled environment because my studio is very well set up

and I know exactly what the product is going to be when it leaves my studio.” Among Couzzi’s current projects are albums by Spanish singer Isabel Pantoja and Brazilian pop singer Daniela Mercury, who has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide. “She’s really, really huge in Brazil,” he said of Mercury. Couzzi is happy to have made Brevard County his family’s new home. “The people here are much more friendly,” he said. “I really don’t miss the horrendous Miami traffic, and I really enjoy the nature here on Merritt Island. My family and I are very much into nature so that was a big draw for us. It’s really nice to be able to go out into the river and go paddleboarding, just seeing all the birds out here, the manatees, the dolphins. It’s an amazing place for nature.” For more information, go to mikecouzzimastering.com. SL

Lakeland’s quiet splendor will have you hooked By Linda Wiggins Florida is the king of day trips, as my good friend and fellow Senior Life columnist John Trieste will attest. It has the genuine, historic sites, the fabulous ocean, lake and lagoonfront sites, and what my family affectionately calls the World’s Largest Ball of String sites. We may be attracted to the historic site or regional event, but we really want to get a look at that ball of string and post it on Facebook. Nothing sells on Facebook like tales of the weird. So Lakeland is your pick if you want a healthy dose of all three elements in equal measure. Not to mention, spring training this month is a great time to see the Detroit Tigers play MLB teams at Joker Marchant Stadium. One great draw to Lakeland is Florida Southern College and its Architectural District known as Child of the Sun, which I’m putting in the lakefront site category even though it is definitely historic. Later, we’ll visit Publix headquarters as my historic pick, and the Southgate Shopping Center, the film site of “Edward Scissorhands,” as my ball of string. If you like architecture, Florida Southern is the place for you. The district is home to the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world, constructed from 1941 through 1958. The 100acre campus itself is on the National Register of Historic Places due to the historical significance of its buildings. In 2011 and 2012, it was selected as the most beautiful campus in America by The Princeton Review. In September 2011, Travel+Leisure listed it as one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States.

Florida Southern College is on the National Register of Historic Places due to the historical significance of its buildings, many designed by famed American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The college’s 64 buildings are dotted across neighborhoods that surround beautiful Lake Hollingsworth, a huge body of water on which all manner of wild and domestic waterfowl thrive, surrounded by various preserved park settings and boardwalks. A look across the lake at a tall, pointy cathedral spire is reminiscent of Old Europe. It’s a great place to decompress from the busy-ness of the week. Speaking of history, the United Methodist Church-sponsored college can trace its roots to 1856 as South Florida Institute. It moved to various locations until a fire spurred its relocation to the current Lakeland site in 1922, and was renamed in 1935. Campus expansion and restoration in the past decade has really made this site worth a look.

A water tower in the shape of a cake marks the Publix headquarters and distribution center in Lakeland. While we are on the topic of history, Publix has an interesting one. Founder George Washington Jenkins had some neat ideas about the grocery shopping experience. His first store was in Winter Haven, a tiny little thing opened in 1930. His budding concept survived the Great Depression. A decade later, he mortgaged an orange grove to build Florida’s first supermarket, a “food palace” with piped-in music, air conditioning, frozen and refrigerated items in banks of window-front freezers and coolers, bakery and floral shop, and futuristic doors that opened automatically. The concept of anchoring a strip mall with such a supermarket would also change the face of daily commerce. Jenkins moved the Publix headquarters to Lakeland in 1951, and that in itself is a tourist attraction. A drive along George Jenkins Boulevard unveils an amazing distribution system. Rather than one humongous building rimmed with semi loading docks, he built stand-alone processing plants and distribution centers based on the items produced, just like a grocery story. Meats, fresh produce, bakery and so on all have homes of their own. The landmark for the area is a huge water tower built in the shape of a three-tiered birthday cake complete with candles — shameless product placement. When “Mr. George” died in 1996, Publix became employee-owned and

his foundation was renamed Publix Super Market Charities. I get a little weepy when I think of it because this foundation gives a lot of money to the charities I have helped through the years, so this feeling attracted me to want to go see the headquarters. I think much of tourism is feelingsfocused. Jenkins was once asked, “If you hadn’t given away so much, how much do you think you would be worth today? He replied, “Probably nothing.” That’s class. Darned expensive, but gosh it’s great to shop there. The site of the first Lakeland Publix is coincidentally the place of my ball of string, Southgate Shopping Center. There is a huge arch that looks to be made of many tons of steel, with another arch in place to the rear of it for what looks like structural support. This ’50s-looking dinosaur is just what won the hearts of film site seekers for one of my favorite movies of all time, “Edward Scissorhands.” This movie touched so many emotions for me, and sparks from the on-screen romance of stars Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder flew onto the real-life pages of celebrity tabloids, my guilty pleasure. This combination of cultural and emotional references and the crazy look of that giant arch made it the perfect Giant Ball of String, and the lakefront architecture and historic commerce made Lakeland a perfect day trip for making family memories. Faith, family and love keep marriage strong for Rockledge couple

Expo to feature Space Coast gem

By Rosemary H. Lynn It has been 55 years since Drs. Clarence and Susie Ferguson married. According to them, these years have been mostly blissful. “We are blessed,” Clarence said. “We have a wonderful family. Our faith has kept us going when times were tough. Everyone has bumps. But love can overcome them.” Together, they opened their church in Rockledge, Faith Temple Christian Center. It was and still is a diverse place, filled with rousing music and enthusiastic church-goers of every race, color and culture. That is how they envisioned it and it has remained so to this day. The Fergusons first met when Clarence was in the military. Susie, a teacher by trade, lived in Tallahassee. She was introduced to her future husband by one of her cousins. Soon, Clarence began driving up to see her once or twice a month. Their son, Rev. Shaun Ferguson, took over the church 14 years ago along with his wife, Rev. Tekisha Ferguson, after his parents retired. Along with ministry, he is an active real estate agent. His sister, Deborah Yarborough, is an OB/GYN nurse at Cape Canaveral Hospital. Both siblings have children of their own. The walls in the Ferguson home are a testament to their love and pride of family. Photos of family gatherings and portraits of their children and grandchildren cover one whole wall in their living room. Susie was a teacher in Brevard

County for 16 years. In 1986, she opened Little Folk Child Care Center with Clarence’s sister, Ruth. Her love of teaching carried over to the lessons she and Clarence taught their children through life. “We always told them that love and respect are paramount to being a good human being. To be honest, caring of everyone regardless of color. We were strict, but in a good way. I think we raised them well,” Clarence said. Susie is also an author of faith-

based books. She hopes to write another soon. “My heart is in teaching and the writing goes along with that,” she said. Watching the two of them talk and finish each other’s sentences is testimony to their love for one another. It would be easy to mistake them for newlyweds. They talk about plans for an upcoming cruise and dinner out on Valentine’s Day. And of course, about their faith. SL

The Forever Young Senior Expo at the Brevard Museum of Science & Natural History will be from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 13 featuring live authentic Irish entertainment by Cahir O’Doherty. Hosted by Senior Life newspaper, the event will provide free entry to attendees 55 and up. On hand will be Brevard’s own Indiana Jones, new museum director and archaeologist Bruce Piatek. The Forever Young Expo will also provide free live entertainment, games and attractions, exhibits, refreshments, lots of door prizes and a grand prize. The event shines a spotlight on a hidden gem, according to the organizer. “This is a wonderful museum and we want to show it off in all its exciting splendor,” said Jill Blue-Gaines, CEO of expo and events firm Bluewater Creative Group, which publishes Senior Life and its annual Boomer Guide, Viera Voice, Viera MD and the Charlie Corbeil Birding Guide. “We want to invite people not only to explore and enjoy it, but play a role in making it an even greater cultural attraction as donors, volunteers and overall supporters.” For more information on the Senior Life Forever Young Expo, call 321-242-1235.

Brevard Museum of History & Natural Sciences Do you want a very informative and diversified museum for your family and friends to visit? I highly recommend touring the Brevard Museum of History & Natural Science in Cocoa. Starting in the main lobby, there is a wonderful replica of the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse with interesting background history of the light. The main lobby also features rotating exhibits and a new Wall of Honor. In this area, there is an excellent display of by-gone beasts, the age of giants and a very neat hands-on “Imagination Station” for children.

The Brevard Museum of History & Natural Science has many diverse exhibits.

In another wing there is an outstanding collection of photos and a timeline of Florida’s past. Here you will also see the Spanish influences in the advancement of our great Sunshine State. Moving into another area, there are interesting life-like displays of a Florida Pioneer Home, an informative Turpentine Exhibit, the importance of the Florida East Coast Railroad in the developing of Florida’s east coast shoreline area, and a typical old time hardware store. In the Shell Collection area, we were greeted by the museum’s shell expert Jim Cordy, an avid shell collector who gave us an in-depth

Touring the Town John Trieste introduction to the hundreds of shells from around the world in the museum’s outstanding collection. Cordy has more than 40 years of scouring all areas of the globe collecting shells. He has one of the largest private Caribbean shell collections in the world with hundreds of his shells on display in the Brevard Museum. There are educational displays of the Cocoa Railway Depot, the history of Brevard’s citrus industry, the importance of commercial fishing, natural Florida habitats and a timeline on the native Seminole American Indians. A highlight of the museum is the Windover exhibit, a replica of the 7,000-year-old Native American burial ground that was discovered in Titusville in 1984. Start with the movie that explains in great detail the discovery of the site by a backhoe operator and the years of work excavating the area. Scientists uncovered 168 skeletons, 87 fiber artifacts and more than 40 wooden tools. These artifacts survived due to the peat in which they were buried. Most amazing was the brain tissue still present in the skulls of skeletons. For a small museum, it has many outstanding features that would be of interest for families. The Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science is located at 2201 Michigan Ave. in Cocoa. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday with last admission at 4 p.m. There is a modest admission charge. For more information, call 321-632-1830 or go to brevardmuseum.org. SL

Exploring, learning new tricks

Spend an hour a day on a new special interest and you could become an expert in one year. Decades ago, international papers ran a series of magazine ads that focused on “give me a man who reads.” A person does not have to travel to exotic lands to explore. Now, we have the power of books, hundreds of television channels, Internet sites and endless video discs. Thousands of people flock to Brevard County every year to watch the migrant birds at various sanctuaries. Others head to Africa to explore on photo safaris. Closer to home, seniors explore new areas of interest by attending college classes. Local programs at the Shepherd’s Center and Senior Adventures in Learning (SAIL) provided many new areas to explore. Learning about ship lore brings people to the Treasure Coast near Sebastian Inlet. Florida history can be found in almost every city. John Trieste in his column “Touring the Town” gives tips on exploring Florida close and far. As long as you live, you will never run out of places to explore. Area travel agencies and travel groups offer guided bus tours to historic places. At many retirement communities, exploration programs are popular. Recently, Sonata invited Sharan Miller to create the joy of making African music with drums and chants. Century Oaks has invited a local artist to help residents explore the art of painting. At Buena Vida, a discussion session titled “All Things Considered” draws folks with strong minds and memories. Bible study programs offered by various churches give seniors an opportunity to explore scripture, its history and meaning. Mental Fitness programs at Buena Vida help residents explore new areas of learning and exercise the mind with such programs as “Summer Memories.”

Challenges of Living to Age 100 Ed Baranowski Check your bucket list. What have you always wanted to do? Where have you wanted to go? What would you like to learn? Combine a walk in your neighborhood as exercise and exploration. A visit to the historic Eau Gallie area in Melbourne includes more than 50 places marked with historic educational signage. Skip the excuses. Get out of your comfort zone. Wheelchairs and scooters are welcome almost everywhere you can go. Put on your pith helmet, grab the binoculars and camera. Energize yourself with exploration and learning new things. Yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks. WE PUT OUR

in Caring for your loved one

You must be present to win These past few months have been great for reminding me that I need to invest in my marriage relationship, culminating in a lovely Valentine’s Day. As a member of the Sandwich Generation, I can attest that a strong marriage is a helpful foundation for tending to the needs of aging parents as well as our own young children. It brought to mind the fact that with many pressures on us, we can also get distracted from spending quality time, providing consistent discipline and setting a good example for our little ones, 12 and 10. So we made an effort to go do something as a family, detailed on the Travel page. Here on this page I’d like to talk about what happened internally when we took a trip to Lakeland last month. First, I have a confession to make. I use electronic devices as a babysitter for my kids. It’s not that I go out on the town, or even leave the house and leave them unattended, but often I am so wiped out from chasing the Almighty Dollar or stressing about

321-757-9205

The Sandwich Generation Linda Wiggins not having enough of them that I am simply not present. It was great when my husband, Mike, declared that we should take a trip to Tampa for an event that was special to him. It would require a couple of nights’ stay, and my friend has a cottage that was vacant those two nights. I saved the terrible news until we got ready to pull out of the garage. Angelina and Joshua were already in the car, and were happy to climb aboard so they could continue face planting in their iPad and iPod, respectively. When Mike put the car in reverse, I announced the trip would be

electronics-free, and then tucked them away. I’d say I don’t understand their pain of having their distraction of choice taken from their hands, but I do. After all, what do you think I’m doing when I’m not present: Facebook, email, texting, curling up with a DVD, catching up on series television online. If it has a screen, I’ll watch it. It was terrific to put down our devices and make some memories of our own rather than simply watching others enjoy adventure and endure drama. I highly recommend it. What a crazy notion it is that it takes work and discipline to go have fun. SL

Women’s history on display at Pritchard House BY Flora Reigada During March, in celebration of Florida Women’s History Month, vintage women’s clothing and accessories from 1884 to the 1950s will be displayed throughout Titusville’s historic Pritchard House. These include mourning dresses, hats, veils, nightgowns, undergarments, children’s clothing, gloves, purses and a 1920s wedding dress ensemble. This year’s exhibit will highlight “The Little Black Dress, Etc.” Along with an exhibit tour, docents will discuss changing trends in clothing, hairstyles traditions and social graces. Tours are Tuesday through Saturday by appointment for $15 per person. On March 21, jolly old England comes to the Pritchard House for the Downton Abbey Afternoon Tea and Women’s Vintage Clothing Exhibit. Jolene’s Custom Cuisine has selected savories and elegant desserts for the occasion. A variety of teas will be provided by Tea World. Guests are encouraged to dress as members and guests of the Crawley family from Downton Abbey, with fancy hats, dresses, gloves and pearls. Tea will commence at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21.
