The Rascals perform at the Sunset Waterfront Grill and Bar Nov. 14. Dave Lewis, left, bass guitar and singer, stands with Jay Wyerkes, keyboard, and Steve Mazzi, tenor sax. BY ROSEMARY H. LYNN
the Ragtime Rascals, but when Kirby passed away in 2011, Lewis took over the band and changed the name to The Rascals. He started out playing with Kirby at Lloyd’s at the Port (now Fishlips) more than 20 years ago. When the restaurant closed, he was invited to play at Sunset. He has been playing there since 1998. Lewis also plays along with Steve Kirsner during Happy Hour at Heidi’s on Wednesday and Friday. Occasionally, he can be found sitting in with other musicians around town. For more information on The Rascals, call Lewis at 321-870-8104. The Sunset Waterfront Grill and Bar is located at 500 W. Cocoa Beach Cswy. in Cocoa Beach. For information, call 321-7838485. SL
Dave Lewis brings his Rascals Band to the Sunset Waterfront Grill and Bar in Cocoa Beach from 1 to 4 p.m. each Thursday for a senior dance like none other in the area. He plays bass guitar and croons for the group, which also features Steve Mazzi on tenor sax and Jay Wyerkes on keyboard. The music is a mix of big band era songs, jazz, blues and rock and roll. Occasionally, they will throw in a ragtime tune to stir things up. The dancers are enthusiastic and enjoy the variety of music. They often ask the band to play a special song. Lewis and his fellow band mates know what many of the attendees prefer and will accommodate them. The dance floor is packed every Thursday with couples enjoying the music and many of the ladies dress up for the occasion. There are usually more women than men. The population of widows outnumbers widowers in the area. But that doesn’t keep anyone off of the dance floor. “The ladies will dance with one another.” Lewis said. “It’s all about having a good time.” And the crowd certainly knows how to do that. Many are seasoned dancers and age doesn’t keep them away. In fact, one gentleman commented that dancing is what keeps him young. Lewis has been By Attorney playing guitar for TRUMAN SCARBOROUGH more than 50 years. He received his first 239 Harrison Street, Titusville, FL guitar when he was For A Complimentary Copy a youngster and has continued playing. Boomer Guide —the best resource guide in Brevard! 2015 issue coming soon Helpful resources 24 hours a day Call 321-757-9205
Let’s make a date for Feb. 6 in your vacation finery A recent visit to Port Canaveral brought to mind some of my most favorite vacations. Everyone seemed to be in vacation mode as crowds strolled around the wonderful new Exploration Tower area that has become a great festival area. Many of them, of course, were heading out of the port on a dream cruise. We really are so fortunate to have this resource right in our own backyard, just a short drive from anywhere in Brevard to the gateway to the world. So on Friday, Feb. 6, I fully expect to see all of you in your cruising finery at the Senior Safari Boomer Guide Expo & Caribbean Beach Party at the Brevard Zoo. Or come dressed for a safari itself, in your German lederhosen, a Hawaiian shirt, or any costume or outfit from your favorite vacation destination. One of the main photo shoots with models for the Boomer Guide was at the port, so you’ll see many of them on the pages of the guide that you’ll be the first to pick up at the event. You’ll also see many of the models themselves, each eager to find out which of them made the cover of the popular annual guide to places to live, play, be well and volunteer on the Space Coast. While you have your day planner out, ink us in for Friday, March 13 at Senior Life’s Forever Young Expo at the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science. You’ll meet the new director, Bruce Piatek, Brevard’s own Indiana Jones. An actual earth-exploring archaeologist, he was part of the team that discovered the Windover Archaeological Site in Titusville in 1982. Some of the 168 humans found buried in the peat at the bottom of a pond — brain tissue intact — are on exhibit at the museum, so it’s perfect that Piatek has come full circle to Brevard. He has a wonderful day planned for us, and of course, we’ll have all the food, fun and live entertainment that make our expos a signature experience. Happy New Year

Senior Life presents New community is inspired choice to meet skyrocketing memory-care living need BY LINDA WIGGINS With the explosion of need for senior living communities due to the aging of baby boomers, as well as their need to find safe, supported housing for their Greatest Generation parents, one aspect is becoming clear. There is a huge need for selfcontained, totally secure memory-care communities where residents can live out their days and virtually never have to leave the campus. “There is such a demand that older facilities are moving as quickly as they can to retrofit,” said James Brassard, sales and marketing director for the brand new InspiredLiving at Palm Bay, a Validus Senior Living Community. “It’s very exciting because this community is a result of seeing the need, and planning, designing and building it from the ground up,” Brassard said. The community is invited to tour the facility at its grand opening from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16. There will be valet parking, door prizes, food and refreshments and live entertainment at the free event. A VIP reception for senior-care industry professionals will follow from 4 to 7 p.m. with all of the above plus meat carving stations. The design process allowed for several changes in care delivery. The administrative area of the facility reflects a major shift, according to InspiredLiving executive director Michele Lyon. The only area accessible by the public is the front lobby, with a small reception counter, small office for Lyon and a small office and discovery center for Brassard where he outlines the amenities for potential residents and their families.
“All our employee work stations and offices are out among the residents so there is ample opportunity for visits and interaction, because that is something that is tremendously needed by residents with memory disorders who may no longer receive regular visits from family and friends,” Lyon said. Residents wear a bracelet that automatically opens their rooms and any areas accessible to them. Exit from the community is only permissible by staff key fob scan. In addition to video monitoring, staff knows at all times the whereabouts of each resident from GPS tracking of their bracelets. “If they have been out in the courtyard for a long time, we might go offer them water so they stay hydrated, or after a time go and gently redirect them inside,” Brassard said. In the rooms and common areas are posters of old Hollywood icons and patriotic imagery. Artist Ron Berman is creating original art on walls throughout the facility. “This is from their time and their generation, what they remember, and what will spark fond memories,” Brassard said. Shadowboxes at each room are filled with special keepsakes and family photos that will help a resident find his residence long after he loses the ability to recognize words. The day is filled with opportunities for meaningful activities. Medical care is available on site and a planned assisted living facility on campus will expand housing choice and the continuum of care. In addition to the general public, the facility is a magnet community for veterans and athletes. Brassard, who recently opened the

InspiredLiving at Palm Bay gets its final touches for a Jan. 16 grand opening. highly successful Viera Manor senior community for veterans, is himself a veteran. Tom Herter is a liaison to the professional sports community as well as a veteran himself. “It’s a tough world in competitive sports with all the brain injuries,” said Herter, who was co-owner of the Daytona Beach Thunderbirds arena football team when a player collapsed at his feet and died after a head-on collision with another player. “I felt something needed to be done to give the players the dignity and the respect they deserve,” Herter said. The facility also specializes in the care of combat veterans with brain injuries. The opening of the facility is a dream coming true for Lyon and her mentor, Charlotte Willis, who ushered Lyon into the senior services profession in 2011 and backed her meteoric rise. Willis, one of the founders of the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation and
beloved among professionals in the senior care community, died of cancer in September. “She really wanted to see this day,” Lyon said. The VIP reception will feature a butterfly garden dedication in Willis’ name, as well as the launch of the Red Keds Walking Club, so named for Willis’ favored footwear. “It’s very important that residents with memory disorders continue to walk and move, so this is a vital feature,” Lyon said, adjusting a shadowbox containing an actual pair of Willis’ shoes. “Her first pair was given to her by a favorite aunt and uncle and she always said when she wore them she ‘felt like a princess,’ and she will always be royalty to us.” For more information on the facility or the open house, call 321-574-6290 or go to inspiredlivingpalmbay.com. Silent film success launches new ‘fun fundraiser’ BY LINDA WIGGINS
Talkies may be a thing of the past. Suntree United Methodist Church organist Tom Taylor successfully brought back a silent film with his accompaniment at a Nov. 2 fundraiser and plans a second event Feb. 6. A capacity crowd of about 350 people attended the free event and ponied up donations for new robes for the choral members. The 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 Silent Cinema Night is Valentine’s Day themed with the 1924 comedy “Sherlock Jr.,” featuring icon Buster Keaton as a movie projectionist who goes to great lengths to win the heart of his dream girl. Taylor will also produce a short “Radio” play in the style of the 1920s and ’30s, complete with commercials. The November flick that
started it all was “Safety Last,” a 1923 movie starring the popular Harold Lloyd as an Average Joe who leaves Kansas to seek his fortune in order to get married and settle down. He sets upon an idea to promote a department store with a stunt that leaves him dangling from a skyscraper clock tower in what is now one of the most iconic scenes in movie history. “Everybody had a great time and really enjoyed it. It was a dream come true for me to do this,” said Taylor, who with his wife Lori moved to the area nine years ago as a senior mechanical designer for Suntree-based BRPH Architects and Engineers, Inc., taking the job at SUMC shortly after. Taylor, a member of the American Theatre Organ Society, got the bug for silent films in the 1960s as part of an art theater group that played the organ for silent films. He said

Tom Taylor wrote his own accompaniment for “Sherlock Jr.” and will exercise his theater muscles witha “Radio Play”. the unique activity is now a proven hit for a new type of fun fundraiser. In addition to the “Radio” play, the audio for the movie is a Taylor artistic creation as well. While the movies do come with an original score, Taylor refuses to even listen to it. Instead, he writes his own music, cutting in and out to evoke the emotion of the story on the screen he has viewed dozens of times. The church is a perfect setting for the event, with its commercial kitchen for mass meal preparation a plus for potential dinner theater, and frequent use by groups as a community center due to its crowd
capacity and amenities, Taylor said. There is, however, one drawback, he added. “You have to choose your films carefully,” Taylor said. “While we may think of them as the good ole days, and in many ways a more conservative time, the silent films dealt with some surprisingly dark and graphic themes. Even if they cut away at the last minute, your imagination filled in the blanks.” The Feb. 6 event is free but donations will be accepted to enhance music ministry offerings. Opthalmologist sees the light in Vietnam
BY MARIA SONNENBERG
Funny how a little phone call can change a life. In 1967, newly minted physician Dr. Marshall Gladnick had just been assigned by the military to a public health hospital in Chicago. “I thought I was pretty lucky,” said the Palm Bay ophthalmologist. “It was a great assignment and there were plenty of pretty nurses around me.” Just a few weeks into the gig, however, came the call on a Monday. “It was the U.S. Government, telling me I had to report to Southeast Asia immediately,” said Gladnick. “They told me to make my last will and testament, go to the hospital for 27 different shots and report to the airport on Tuesday.” By Wednesday, Gladnick, arms swollen with the series of vaccinations he had received, was dropped in Vietnam via helicopter, part of the influx of doctors the government knew would be needed as the Tet Offensive got underway. “There was such a shortage of doctors at the time,” Gladnick said. He had not had time for any basic training, but in its stead was provided with a 2,000-page red book that detailed the hazards ahead, stuff like booby traps and land mines. “I thought to myself, this is the end for you, Gladnick,” said the physician.
It wasn’t just the enemy that was worrisome, either. “Within an hour of my arrival, the night sky lit up with white phosphorus. It looked like Florida on a sunny day,” Gladnick said. “Today, they call it friendly fire. In those day, they called it a major mistake. That was my introduction to Vietnam.” Fortunately, he was so busy with casualties that his arrival jitters soon left. “In a couple of weeks, I was so involved with helping others that I didn’t worry anymore,” he said. For the next five years, Gladnick would become very familiar with helicopters, his main mode of commuting between hot spots of the Vietnam War. They would helicopter us everywhere they would need us,” he said. “I was sent to every sector of Vietnam.” At the front lines, he patched up soldiers, primarily blood-and-guts stuff, which eventually served to guide him to a career in ophthalmology. “I had originally wanted to become an internist, because in med school, I was the kind of guy who during the eye lectures would get up and go throw up, but a lot of the injuries I saw in Vietnam were in around the eyes, and I became so interested in that I decided to become an ophthalmologist,” he said. Military service over, Gladnick completed his residency in

New Brevard Museum director is used to Indiana Jones digs BY LINDA WIGGINS
OK, let’s get this question out of the way: Did the “Indiana Jones” film series in any way inspire new Brevard Museum Brevard Museum of History & Natural Science director Bruce Piatek to become an archaelologist? Does he even own a fedora? The answers to these and more questions will be forthcoming at the March 13 Senior Life Forever Young Expo at the museum. Held during “Florida Archaeology Month,” there will be special programs that day and throughout the month. Piatek took the post in September, after the retirement of former director Nancy Rader, and after the Florida Historical Society took over museum management, with the society’s director Ben Brotemarkle picking Piatek to run the museum and the society’s Archaeological Institute, which is housed at the museum. Piatek was the director of the Florida Agricultural Museum for the past 20 years, which he moved from Tallahassee to its current home in St. Augustine. He built a museum on 400 acres of woods into a successful outdoor museum that ranked No. 1 Flagler County area attractions. “I was excited to take over the Brevard Museum with its 45 years of outstanding service to the community and the new support provided by the Florida Historical Society,” Piatek said. He’ll be working with the Indian River Archaeological Society to develop new archaeological learning opportunities and activities at the museum and presenting tours and other public programs on archaeology in Brevard County. The museum already has two new exhibits. “Eye on the Universe – the Hubble Space Telescope,” was sponsored by the Kennedy Space Center and displays impressive graphic images of the Hubble’s discoveries, as well as, a model of the Hubble and of the deployment of the Hubble telescope from the Space Shuttle. “Getting this major new exhibit opened, in conjunction with a successful exhibit-opening fundraising event, was a challenge,” said Piatek, who counts professional fundraiser among his many hats. “It was only possible because of the great help of the Kennedy Space Center staff who painted, cleaned, designed and installed this wonderful new exhibit.” Another exhibit was launched with

Dwarfed by a giant sloth skeleton, new Brevard Museum director Bruce Piatek is an archaeologist who hopes to soon “get dirty at a number of Brevard County archaeological sites.” an original painting by Jackson Walker titled “They Called it La Florida,” Ponce DeLeon’s first landing in Florida. A quest for the ests: Visiting the extremes of the United States BY ANDREA GROSS
I’m a sucker for superlatives. My personal bucket list demands that I visit as many “ests” as possible, places that hold the record for being the highest, hottest or in some way the very best of their category. I thought compiling the list would be simple, especially after I limited it to the United States, but of course it wasn’t. I ran into myriad problems of measurement and definition. Eventually I came up with my own criteria, based as much on practicality and desirability as on quantifiable data. Here, my recommendations for the Best of the Ests:
Highest
1917 and 1927 as a means of drawing tourists. It worked. Today the scenic drive—a two-lane ribbon that winds between towering evergreens, open meadows and lovely alpine lakes—is one of Colorado’s top attractions. [mountevans.com]

Highest – ParkLot — People who take a short hike from the highest paved parking lot in the U.S. to the summit of Mount Evans can brag that they’ve climbed one of Colorado’s famous Fourteeners (mountains that rise more than 14,000 feet above sea level).
I have no intention of actually climbing the tallest peak, which rules out Alaska’s Mount McKinley (20,237 feet), yet I want to do more than peer toward the heavens. Thus I head for Colorado’s Mount Evans. At 14,265 feet, Mount Evans is a pigmy among giants, but—and this is important—it’s home to the highest paved road. This means I can drive almost all the way to the country’s highest parking lot, walk a mere quarter mile to the summit and voila, I’ll be standing atop the highest reasonably accessible peak in the United States. The highway was built between
Choosing the lowest spot is easy. Since I quickly rule out deep-sea diving and descending into a mine, I’m left with Death Valley, Ca., which is the lowest point of dry land that was formed by nature as opposed to by man-and-shovel. The Valley’s precise lowest point (282 feet below sea level) is near Badwater Basin, which sits amid nearly 200 square miles of salt flats. A boardwalk lets visitors walk part way into the basin, but most folks step down onto the actual flats. The landscape is bizarre but beautiful, a pattern of interlocking shapes created by the valley’s unique combination of extreme heat, minimal rainfall and low elevation. [nps.gov/deva]

Here I run into trouble. Calexico, a small town on the CaliforniaMexico border, has the lowest annual rainfall, but Death Valley has the most consecutive days with no rainfall. In the end I opt for neither. In my mind, “dry” suggests a place where I can mount a camel and ride endless miles across towering sand dunes. Calexico is dune-less, and while Death Valley has dunes, they aren’t recordsetters. For that I have to go to Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado, which although devoid of camels has 750-foot tall sand piles, the highest in North America. Later, I learn that the dunes aren’t really dry. In fact, it’s the moist layer of sand right under the surface that holds the upper dry sand in place. But that’s OK. At this point in my Est-Quest, I’m more concerned with imagery than scientific accuracy. [nps.gov/grsa]
year, Forks is the rainiest town with 120 inches a year. More important, it’s given this accolade not only by the National Climatic Data Center but also by Stephenie Meyer, who used it as a setting for her “Twilight” book series. Why, I may even spot a vampire along the shore or amidst the trees, and this makes Forks a double superlative— winner of both the wettest and the weirdest categories. [forkswa.com]

KEENANS WITH GRANDSONS
Generations of generosity put meals on bare family tables BY LINDA WIGGINS
It’s something a grandmother enjoyed doing with a grandchild, and in this circle of life, it will be so again. Mandi Verderosa of Viera and her daughter, Amy Worley, have carried on the tradition started in 2003 by their mother/grandmother, Jeanette Mandala of Suntree that last year provided 555 families with a savory spread to feed about 4,500 people. The effort is seeking donations and volunteers to double that number next year. “That’s just who my mother was, always looking for a way to help someone in need,” Verderosa said, tears welling up in her eyes as she spoke about the Suntree pioneer who died in 2009 at the end of a purposeful life. “If she received a call about a clothing drive, she never failed to donate clothing taken right off the hangers from her closet.” So her friends were not surprised when Mandala invited them to ladies luncheons but instead of asking them to bring a Christmas gift to exchange, she SENIOR LIFE PHOTO requested donated household items to Mandi Verderosa holds her first grandson Landon, whom her auction off to one another. Couples can say “I Do, Anew” at Senior Safari zoo expo BY LINDA WIGGINS When Connie and Jim Fears renewed vows for their 50th anniversary on a recent Valentine’s Day, they were saying to themselves, each other and God that if they could choose now, they’d say “I Do” all over again. The second-annual non-zoo event to take over the entire Brevard Zoo grounds, the Senior Safari Boomer Guide Expo sponsored by Senior Life will give couples a chance to say “I Do, Again,” in front of a beloved animal attraction at the 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. senior expo Friday, Feb. 6. Couples can give each other a Valentine’s Day to remember with a champagne toast, wedding cake and a professional portrait for $65 in advance per couple at 2 p.m. during the expo that day. For the Fears, their early years as a military family with young children entailed frequent moves, unforeseen challenges and limited finances. Then, their vows meant, “I love you because.” Now, vows mean “I love you despite,” a decision that is much stronger and more mature, according to a neighbor and marriage counselor serving Suntree to Barefoot Bay who attended the ceremony. “As they reflected on their shared joys and sorrows, like the loss of a son who served in the military, it evoked the true meaning of the reading from Corinthians that followed,” Stephanie Byrd said. The therapist is certified in Prepare/Enrich, the No. 1 approach used by relationship experts to prepare couples for marriage or enrich their existing union. “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. In their words and posture was a message relayed: we did it and would do it all over again.” When couples choose to renew their vows, they are engaging in rituals that
can have deep and profoundly positive effects on their marriage, Byrd said. “Unlike the initial wedding ceremony, the couples have a clearer, more realistic perspective of their own and their partner’s strengths and limitations.” Many boomers turning seniors married in a time when traditional rituals seemed passé, some opting for civil procedure over church ceremony. According to Chaplain Tom Unrath, pastor of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cocoa that serves Central to North Brevard, this can also be a good reason for renewal. “Many couples come to some realization that religion is important,” he said. “This offers an opportunity to add that religious dynamic.” Time invested in a marriage can add more satisfaction as the years pass, Byrd said. Married for 14 years, she also takes care of young children as well as aging parents while running a thriving practice. “It is only now that I am beginning to understand the true meaning of the vows my husband and I exchanged on our wedding day. Our love has never been deeper, having been transformed by this journey,” she said. “Life can be stressful at times, but through each challenging life experience, we made the choice to turn toward each other for strength and comfort, deepening our commitment and connection.” Pausing to reflect on those years, a broad smile lit up her eyes. “I look forward to the stories we will share on our 50th anniversary.” To register for the “I Do, Anew” vows renewal at the Brevard Zoo, call 321-242-1235 by Jan. 29. Entry to the zoo and expo is free for anyone 55 and over; and 54 and younger pay normal zoo admission with no additional charge for the expo. SL

Playboy on Stage: A History of the World’s Sexiest Nightclubs By Patty Farmer, Beaufort Books - November 2014 BOOK REVIEW BY MARY BROTHERTON
Most Senior Life readers know who Hugh Hefner is and are familiar with his publication, Playboy. Many even recall his members-only Playboy Clubs, filled with iconic Playboy Bunnies. These clubs were the quintessential “man caves” that catered to key holders with food, drinks and top entertainment. Patty Farmer has written the first oral history of an amazing entertainment empire launched in these clubs. She interviewed entertainers, Bunnies, patrons and got the inside scoop on Hefner’s many Bunny Rules and his liberal attitude toward bringing quality entertainment to his clubs. Her writing style is witty and documentary with a splendid mix of research and interview. She reveals how Hefner, a jazz fan, had the foresight to bring in headliners like Tony Bennett, Ann Margret and Liza Minnelli, but he didn’t shy away from newcomers in other musical genres as well as comics who credit Playboy with launching their careers. During the 1960s and early 1970s, during the height of the Playboy Clubs’ popularity, they exerted a powerful influence on culture and politics. Hefner and his staff were hiring talent, not skin color or gender. The clubs and the magazine helped push for civil rights and gender equality.

Rick Edwards “Playboy on Stage,” the first book to highlight Playboy’s impact on entertainment, tells the story from many points of view, in the words of musicians, singers and comedians — as well as those involved behind the scenes of the Playboy Clubs. The book is filled with comments and anecdotes from entertainment’s Who’s Who, including Joan Rivers, Al Jarreau, Rich Little and so many others. The book takes readers backstage and on stage in a book that is difficult to stop reading after the first page. SL

Senior athletes looking for new basketball digs BY ROSEMARY H. LYNN Jim Meffen has a busy schedule at Florida Air Academy in Melbourne. As admissions officer, he helps students plan their agenda and schedules on an everyday basis. But his love of basketball is what drives him the most when it comes to working closely with others. And that is why he is involved with the 2014 Senior Games in Florida. The games are open to seniors ages 50 and above. Participants may play as many games as they like as long as the schedules don’t conflict. Sports such as basketball, swimming, tennis, table tennis, baseball, racquetball and tennis as well as others are offered. The events take place in Lee County from Dec. 6 to Dec. 13. The events are open each year for men and women ages 50 and up. Qualifying members or teams will be eligible to participate in the National games, which is the largest multi-sport event in the world for senior athletes. Meffen’s entire family is involved in sports. His
son, who lives in Washington, D.C., plays basketball; his daughter, in Destin, is an L.P.N. and spends her spare time playing softball. His grandson is an avid soccer and baseball player. “Athletics is an important part of our lives and here at Florida Air (Academy). We encourage all students to participate in some type of sport,” Meffen said. Training for both basketball and soccer is offered at the FAA campus in Melbourne. Currently, they are searching for a larger facility to accommodate training needs. Senior athletes hope to train more often and would like to have use of a basketball court in Brevard County to use. “If anyone knows of a court we can use for basketball, that would be great,” Meffen said. “The court here at the campus gives students first choice for use. That often leaves the senior players with no place to practice.” For more information, Meffen can be reached by email at DRJMEFFENiii@gmail.com or check out the Florida Senior Games page on Facebook. health & wellness QUESTION
What can I do if I chose the wrong plan?
I have been reading the materials sent to me by the Medicare Advantage Plan that I chose during the recent Annual Open Enrollment Period (AEP). I have concluded that I selected the wrong plan. Can I change plans now, or must I wait until the next Annual Open Enrollment Period that begins in October of 2015? —Disappointed with my choice Dear Disappointed: There are four situations in which you can make a change before the next AEP: 1. Annual Disenrollment Period. You may disenroll from your Medicare Advantage Plan (MA) between January 1 and February 14 and switch to Original Medicare. Original Medicare, which includes Part A and B coverage, will begin the first day of the month following your disenrollment. For instance, if you disenroll from your MA plan on January 21, your switch to Original Medicare would be effective February 1. However, during this time you cannot: • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan • Switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another (see exception in #3)
• Switch from one Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to another If you do decide to switch to Original Medicare, you also have until Feb. 14 to buy a Part D Prescription Drug Plan. 2. The Medicare Advantage Trial Right. If this is the first time you enrolled in any MA plan, you have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to switch back to Original Medicare at any time during the first 12 months you are in the MA plan. If you disenroll from the MA plan during this 12-month period, your switch to Original Medicare will take effect the following month. In addition, if you had a Medicare Supplement policy — also called Medigap — you have the right to buy it again if the company still sells the policy you had. You can also buy a Part D Prescription Drug Plan.
Ask Lance Lance P. Jarvis SHINE 3. Switch to a 5-star MA plan. If there is a 5-star MA plan offered in your area you can switch to it at any time — you do not have to wait until the next AEP. Medicare evaluates plans on their overall performance and assigns a star rating between 1 and 5. A 5-star rating is considered excellent. Star ratings are available at medicare.gov/find-a-plan or call SHINE to see if there are any 5-star plans in your area that meet your needs. 4. Low-income beneficiary. If you signed up for an MA plan and are also in a Medicare Savings Program for low-income beneficiaries through the Florida Department of Children and Families, you can change MA plans or switch back to Original Medicare at any time. SHINE counselors have received in-depth training to provide you with unbiased assistance with this important decision. A SHINE counselor will not
tell what you should do but will guide you so that you can make an educated decision About SHINE SHINE is an award-winning statewide volunteer program that provides free, unbiased and confidential counseling and information for people on Medicare, their families and caregivers. CAREGIVING COUNTS Caregiver tip for January: Plan for routine and emergency medical visits
DEFINITION
Guardian:
A legal term for a person who is lawfully vested with the care of the property and/or person who has been judged legally incompetent.
Hospitals and some doctors’ offices are always cold. Be sure to keep a sweater or shawl handy for you and the one you are taking for a visit. Also, remember to pack a light snack and a bottle of water for each of you because you don’t want to leave to find a vending machine.
Do you know?
Do you know the reason some prescriptions must be taken with food or milk? Do you know why certain prescriptions should never be taken with alcohol? Do you know that some medications interact with a healthy diet? Do you know that kidney infections can mimic Alzheimer’s disease? Do you know why exposure is such a risk to the elderly? Do you know that if you write your concerns on a note and mail it to your doctor, the physician’s assistant can likely answer all your concerns without the need for an office visit if you are patient? Do you know that some elderly people act out for attention or out of boredom? Do you know how powerful music can be to calm an agitated person? Do you know that your doctor or pharmacist can answer all of these questions for you?

2015 Caregivers’ Wall Calendar and Veterans’ Caregiver Calendar
I am a paid caregiver/sitter and my patient’s adult children have asked me to keep them updated on doctor’s visits. Am I allowed to do that, based on HIPAA laws?
Unless your patient specifically forbids you from discussing his or her care with the family members, HIPAA law does not prevent this. If you have been hired by an agency, check with that agency for protocols, first. HIPAA states that health care providers should use their own best judgment in working with people who provide care to the patient or are responsible for the patient’s health care bills. Often, just asking, “Do you mind if I talk with your children after the doctor’s visit?” is enough to find out where you stand.
Caregiving, one of the toughest jobs, made a little easier with a wall calendar designed by Julie Cook Downing, president of Caregivers’ Comfort Creations. The four-month at-a-glance calendars have space for patient notes, observations and appointments. Each month focuses on a nationally designated health concern and has inspirational quotes that just might help get your favorite caregiver through the day. The Veterans calendar features inspirational messages. The calendar sells for $14.99. For more information, call 941-360-3580. SL

A new you in the New Year starts with focusing on what you want to gain, not lose
New pub in Cocoa Village adds spark to area BY ROSEMARY H. LYNN
SENIOR LIFE LINDA WIGGINS
Executive coach Linda Cobb, pictured with her fitness instructor Deborah Wall, prescribes to the belief that what you focus on gets bigger, so we need to quit focusing on excess weight and envision instead our improved health. BY LINDA WIGGINS Ever go on a diet and end up gaining weight instead? Certified executive coach and Melbourne Beach resident Linda Cobb has the answer to that paradox for all of us turning over a new leaf in the New Year. “Dieting is a flawed model. The traditional way of dieting has us focusing on this thing we do not want called weight, and trying to push it away,” said Cobb, who speaks to boomer and senior customers of Health First Health Plans under contract to help improve health and lower risk and medical costs. “The problem is that we get what we focus on, and whatever we focus on gets bigger. Quite literally. It’s a perfect example of miscreating by focusing on something you don’t want.” At age 62 and with a body most 20-somethings would envy, she is also an inspiration and role model as well as a coach. But rather than preach what most of us already know — eat less, exercise more — she partners with clients to create a roadmap to the desired outcome and holds them accountable for paths they choose on that map. “It’s not your fault. Most of us were taught to fix things if there’s something we don’t want. But if you want to create positive results for yourself, you must
identify what you do want. That’s a little harder because we can’t see it … we must imagine it.” The first step is to decide what we want. “If you want to lose weight, decide why you want that. Make a decision that you will go hiking with your grandchildren or you will lower your blood pressure to a certain number and imagine how good that will feel. It’s OK to begin by identifying what you don’t want. After all, that’s what usually gets your attention. You can see it and point to it. Just don’t stop there. Make sure you follow up by identifying what you do want.” A good place to start is that you want to feel good, Cobb said, adding, with each choice placed in front of you, ask yourself, is this a choice that will forward me in that direction? “Remember that as we age, everything we take in either nourishes us or depletes us, whether you eat it, see it or hear it. Be selective and choose only the things that nourish you,” said Cobb, who surrounds herself with people who also want to feel good. One of those people is Deborah Wall, Cobb’s fitness instructor at Pro-Health & Fitness Center in Melbourne. Like Cobb, Wall, too, seems to have found the fountain of physical youth that leaves
people in disbelief that she will be 59 in April. “I only hope that I am half the positive influence on her that she is on me,” Wall said with a laugh. In addition to health and wellness, Cobb’s most popular areas of coaching are relationships, money and business success. Cobb’s greatest message is on making the choices in all areas of our lives that lead to our happiness, and that starts with a peaceful, serene attitude of gratitude. She gives her clients daily exercises to calm the mind and envision and focus on the things we want, while the things we don’t want shrivel from inattention and disappear from our radar and our lives. With regard to people looking to make better choices in what they put in their mouths and put underfoot, what disappears may be excess weight from the scale. “Most people say that I would be happy if I was just healthy,” Cobb said, “but the truth is that you have to be happy in order to be healthy.” SL Cobb, who has acted as caregiver for her own family members, is the author of “The Thrive Guide for Caregivers: Tools for Preserving your Sanity, Energy, and Relationships.” For more information or to sign up to receive free wellness tips, go to lindacobb.com.
When Jason Estes and Eric McKinley first met while working out together at the Cross Fit Gym in Melbourne, owned and operated by McKinley, they started talking about their mutual ambition of owning a fun and lively pub in Brevard County. Both are beer and wine aficionados who love having fun and crave being entrepreneurs. Estes, who has been in the food and beverage business for more than 25 years and McKinley, who enjoys craft beers, started talking about opening a place in Cocoa Village, a thriving locale with an eclectic clientele. They chose the name The Village Idiot because it is memorable and suits the creative surroundings of Cocoa Village. “Kevin Nunnley, a business consultant, has helped pull the business together,” Estes said. It wasn’t long before they began putting a business plan in place. Their dream was about to come true. They planned a menu of craft beers, a total of 36, and interesting wines. They plan to add live music to the mix in the near future. Right now, they are waiting for the final health inspection and plan to be open in early January. “We will be rotating craft beers month to month,” Estes said. “We also have a selection of the best wines for those who prefer it.” Many breweries are participating in the selection of beers. Craft beers are very popular now as opposed to kegs or draught beer. “We are excited about the grand opening which will take place in January. It will be announced on Facebook and other social media as well as in the newspaper,” McKinley said. The pub will hold approximately 120 people when finished. Snacks eventually will be available. “This is a place to come for a great beer or wine, not for a meal,” Estes added. McKinley and his girlfriend, Karen, have two doggie children, Roxy, a 13-year-old Boxer and Blue, a 6-month-old English Pointer. Estes is married to Rebecca and they have two boys, ages 16 and 13. Beyond the Curb
Setting the tone for the New Year’s resolutions Beyond the Curb Marcia Booth
President & Founder, Recycle Brevard And so we passed the craziness of the end of the year and arrived at 2015. It is a brand new year, a chance to start fresh, a clean slate. We can concentrate on our plans for the future and work on our New Year’s resolutions. Ah, the resolutions… the conscious exercise of choosing what to do to make things better and defining our priorities for the year — and beyond. Resolutions may include personal changes — things we want to change in ourselves, or collective changes — things we would like to suggest and try to implement in a group, community, town and so on. No matter what we include in our lists, they are improvements that really matter and are important to us, but the most important thing about resolutions is that it starts with us. We are the agents of change. We have the power to decide on what to devote time and effort. Some items may be easier to realize than others, but if they are important enough to be on that list, they should not be overlooked or skipped. We should find ways to get
So you want to write a book?
them to become reality. That may be easier to do with our personal items as we have full control of the changes, when and how to implement them, but it does not mean that collective items are impossible to achieve. We may need to take baby steps and join forces with others who have the same (or similar) items on their list so we have a higher chance of seeing those come to fruition. For example, this year a project to build a rail extension in Brevard County is being considered. The page that gives an overview of the project states that “The Canaveral Port Authority plans to file a request with the Surface Transportation Board (Board) for authority to construct and operate approximately 11 miles of new rail line to Port Canaveral in Brevard County, Florida. The proposed Port Canaveral Rail Extension would also utilize approximately 17 miles of existing rail line at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) to make a connection with a main line of the Florida East Coast Railway. The proposed rail line would begin near the Port’s North Cargo Area, extend west over the Banana River, enter KSC on Merritt Island south of Kars Park, and then turn north through KSC grounds where it would connect with KSC’s existing rail line. The construction and
02 . 06 . 15
operation of this proposed project has the potential to result in significant environmental impacts; therefore, the Board’s Office of Environmental Analysis (OEA) has determined that the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is appropriate pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).” Protecting our environment is high on my list as it is on the list of other individuals in our community. Therefore, one of the items on our list this year may very well be to see how we can guarantee that the best decision for the community and the environment is made in regards to this rail extension plan: one item; one group sticking together to see that through. Things like that have the positive side effect of bringing people together. When people come together, unifying their voice, they also intensify that voice and that may get us a step closer to crossing off important items on our list. The beginning of the year is a time full of hope, when bad experiences stay behind and dreams become a possibility in the shape of resolutions. We unite and set the tone of our own future through the items we include on our lists. I already made my list. What about you? SL

Music matters most to boomer host of 98.5-FM’s morning show BY MIKE GAFFEY Eric Young started in radio nearly 50 years ago in chilly Canada, but the boomer hopes to wrap up his career at The Beach. Young, the morning show host at WSBH-FM 98.5 “The Beach” in Melbourne, marks his first anniversary this month at the popular 6,000-watt independent station that plays the biggest hits of the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s. “I just talked to an old friend from Montreal and I said, ‘Isn’t it interesting that I started my career in 1967 at an AM station at 98 on the radio dial, and here I am just after turning 65 and it looks like I’m going to finish my career at 98 on the FM dial,’ ” Young said. The Montreal native and host of “Eric in the Morning” is on the air from 6 to 10 a.m. weekdays, playing classic rock and roll, R&B and disco hits, interspersed with time and temperature, traffic reports, news updates and a trivia contest. “I love the music,” Young said. “I play in the morning all of the music that I grew up with on radio. I don’t take myself too seriously anymore. I like to be entertaining. I like to have some significant things to say but I do realize that first and foremost it’s all about the music. I’m very conscious that I’m making sure we’re playing as much music as we possibly can. My listeners don’t tune in to hear me talk. I’d like to think they tune in because they feel I’m a friendly voice and I’m going to give them the necessary information they need when they’re getting ready to go to work in the morning.” Young was drawn to radio as a child, often pretending to be a disc jockey in the basement of his family home. “For some reason, I’d always

been intrigued by guys on the radio,” Young said. “I thought, What a glamorous life that must be.” After leaving school at 17 and being ordered by his father to get a job to help pay the rent, Young found work as an office boy at Montreal radio station CKGM-AM. “I was basically making sure there was coffee in the coffee machine, and I would do the mimeographed sheets of the Top 40 charts for that week,” he said. “I was the local gofer. But for me, $$$ CASINO GETAWAYS $$$ as a kid of 17 at the time, hey, I was working in radio.” 1 Night @ Hard Rock Casino Hollywood After about six months on MARCH 10 or MAY 11, 2015 the job, Young got a chance to $ 169 pp* • $ 35 FREE Play fill in mixing audio as a board next day at Isle Casino & Coconut Creek Casino operator. “I did a pretty good 1 Night @ Hampton Inn Gulfstream Park job,” he said, “and from there it Casino, Hallandale • APRIL 20, 2015 was a continuation of that.” $ 40 FREE Play & Breakfast Young’s career took him 4 CASINOS • $129 pp* to stations all across Canada. 3 nights @ Biloxi, FEB 3, 2015 Between radio jobs, he $ 70 FREE Play / $ 22 Food Credit • $199 pp* supported himself as a drumand guitar-playing musician *Includes DOTS Bus, Hotel, Parking, and Taxes and record promoter. weather. After returning to Canada for work, Young came to Brevard in 1996, working for WLRQ-FM Lite Rock 99.3. Young decided to take early retirement rather than pursue his radio career. “I had become really comfortable in this market, so for three years I sat around and enjoyed my time off,” he said. A call from WSBH station manager Dave Poore changed all that. “Dave said they were making a change in the morning show and he really wanted me, and it was an offer I just couldn’t say no to,” Young said. “It was like, ‘This is the way it’s meant to end.’ ” WSBH is Brevard’s top-ranked station for listeners ages 35 to 64, according to Arbitron ratings, and in October the station just enjoyed its best financial month in its 10-year history. Young attributes part of the station’s success against larger competitors to its presence at local functions and fundraisers, such as the pre-concert Picnic on the Patio at the King Center for the Performing Arts, which Young hosts, and its Christmas toy drive, which “went beyond all expectations this year.” “I like to think people like feeling

like they’re in touch with somebody local,” Young said. “For example, I do a little feature called ‘Sports Shorts.’ I talk about the Miami Dolphins and other Florida pro and college teams, but I also like to talk about the FIT Panthers and the Eastern Florida State College Titans. I’m very big on doing high school football during the season. I think it’s important for those folks to hear their kids’ football teams mentioned on the air. My two key words have always been ‘live’ and ‘local.’ ” When he’s not entertaining listeners or working in the studio, Young often can be found Thursday nights at Squid Lips restaurant in Melbourne, sitting in on drums and singing during a weekly jam session before heading home for bed at 8 p.m. “That’s my release,” said Young, who gets up before 4 a.m. for work. “It’s fun. Fortunately, I’ve been one of those people who’ve managed to make all my wishes come true. I’m loving The Beach. I’m loving the people I work with. It’s a great thing and in a way I’ve come full circle.” SL

North Brevard Pleasing your palate in Titusville BY FLORA REIGADA PHOTOS BY DAN REIGADA
More dining options are available in North Brevard and the following restaurants are open for business. The Cobbler Café is an offshoot of the popular Kloiber’s Cobbler Eatery in downtown Titusville. Both are owned by Michael O’Brien. The new restaurant features the same menu as the original, including the signature fruit cobbler, but with more salads and soups. As one of the servers said, “You just can’t improve something so awesome.” Cobbler flavors include peach and blackberry, served daily. Age defying makeup tips for women over 50 BY CLAUDIA NETTIG AND CINDY COHEN
Enhance your lip color
We all want nice, moist, pretty lips with color. When we pass age 50, we want to have bright colors with that gloss to brighten our appearance.
Use highlighting colors to brighten your face
A good highlighting color can be an incredible tool in your daily cosmetic routine. The use of highlighting color can help counter the appearance of aging brows, cheeks, mouth and eyes. Brows: Use a bit of highlighting color just below the brow and a little bit above the brow to lift, open, and brighten the eye. You will see an immediate difference in your facial appearance. Cheeks: Use the same highlighter at the top of your cheekbone to make it a more prominent spot on your face. It’s a lift up and it brightens the appearance of your face instantly. Mouth: Use highlighter around your mouth area where typically small lines sometimes settle in. Softly outline the mouth to make it look a bit fuller in appearance. This will soften the lines around the mouth and change your facial appearance. Open your Eyes: I always tell my over-50 customers to use an eyeliner. Apply the eyeliner above the top lashes and keep it on the thinner side; you can smudge it out a little by the outer eye. Always, keep your eyelid lighter in color to keep the eye looking bright and open. Select an eyeliner color that will complement your own coloring—however, it should define the eye. Colors such as sparkly blue, earthly brown, purple or greens can be very beautiful.
Stay Softly on the lip liner
Wear a lip liner one or two shades darker than your own natural lip color. This will complement your lip and lipstick.

13,000-square-foot multiuse community building. Future plans call for homes where the loved ones of residents can live. “This has never been done. There are many elements in the community that are opportunities for people without developmental delays to live, work and play, so it is an integrated community, not just a large grouphome setting.” A variety of Promise-owned businesses will also be located inside the community, where residents will work in a supported environment, as well as generate diverse resource streams. Promise Treasures Thrift Shoppe in West Melbourne already generates revenues and employs future Promise residents with disabilities. For more information or to donate or volunteer, go to promiseinbrevard.com or call the thrift shop, located in the Metro West Shopping Plaza at State Road 192 and Wickham Road, at 321-536-1666. SL
Promise In Brevard has been awarded $15.8 million to construct a residential community for adults with special needs. The West Melbourne site borders Palm Bay just north of Hammock Landing. The Florida Housing Finance Corporation funds are not a loan and will not have to be repaid, making this type of money a dream come true and beyond, according to Promise cofounder Betsy Farmer. “This is a total God thing. We have been working to get to the point where we can break ground. It’s one thing to get a loan, but to have this chunk of effort completely behind us is just a miracle,” said Farmer, who packaged the project as special-needs senior housing that solved a number of issues such as transportation and access to social services. The young adults who will be moving in will stay for life. Additionally, the funding is a huge relief for boomers and seniors who are seeking independent living arrangements for their “kids” — the universal term used by parents of adult children with special needs. Farmer co-founded Space Coast Early Intervention in 1987 for her son, Luke, who has Down syndrome. In the past decade, she shifted her focus to the needs of young adults for independent-living housing and supported-employment opportunities as he became a young adult. “Children with developmental and physical disabilities are outliving their parents for the first time in history, and it is a relief to know there will be a place they will live a full life beyond our own lifetimes,” Farmer said. SENIOR LIFE GRAPHIC Promise In Brevard owns 39 acres Promise in Brevard residential neighborhood in West of property off Norfolk Parkway, with Melbourne is among private and public amenities for initial plans for three apartment buildings adults with developmental disabilities planned in the for 125 special-needs residents and a town.

Feel like flattering your neck and jawline?
Yes, you can flatter your neck and jawline easily. For use under the chin and onto the neck, simply apply a little bit of contouring color which should be two or three shades deeper than your foundation color to shadow it back a little bit. You can also apply highlighting color above the jaw line and below the bottom of the cheek; this will lift your face and change your facial appearance immediately. If you need help picking out the right shades for your neck and jawline, just go to your drugstore or department store and ask at the cosmetic counters for some help with those areas.
Senior housing funding fuels jobs for adults with disabilities BY LINDA WIGGINS
The big change in eye makeup is that a little shimmer goes a long way! Many of my over-50 clients are very afraid of eye shadows that have shimmer in them. Eye shadows have changed during the past 25 years and the quality of the shadows has been refined. Definitely go with a little shimmer and have fun!

Suntree octogenarian presses on, sets world powerlifting record BY MIKE GAFFEY Vito Lombardo didn’t start lifting weights until he was 77. Five years later at 82, he’s now a world champion powerlifter. The Suntree resident bench-pressed a world-record 203 pounds at the American Powerlifting Federation’s World Powerlifting Championships in West Palm Beach in November. Lombardo competed in the 220-pound division for men ages 80 to 84 and set the record on his third lift. “A lot of people came up to me and wanted to take a picture with me to show that I was 82 and lifted over 200 pounds,” said Lombardo, a Brooklyn, N.Y. native who worked as a cement finisher for 40 years before retiring to Florida. “Even the guy taking pictures for the federation asked if he could take a picture with me.” Lombardo, a former Marine who won the Purple Heart during combat in the Korean War, got into the sport in 2009 after he joined Pro-Health & Fitness Center in Viera on its first day in business. Not long after he started working out for the first time with weights, he was spotted by local powerlifter Al Annunziato. “I had a 50-pound dumbbell in each hand and he asked me if I wanted to do powerlifting and that he’d show me what to do,” Lombardo said. “I could only lift 135 pounds one time at that time. Now I lift 135 10 times after I finish my workout.” Lombardo progressed quickly, excelling in the bench press. By 2012, he had captured APF state and national titles for powerlifters in his age group. He also started training with John Bellak, a Suntree resident and a former high school strength and conditioning coach in Ohio. Bellak worked with Lombardo for four months leading up to the world championships, which attracted 800 powerlifters from 40 countries. Bellak chose LA Fitness in Melbourne as their training site because the gym had Hammer Strength machines. “My coach here, he’s better than a sleeping pill,” Lombardo said, “because he’d train me for an hour and a half and he’d tell me ‘I know you’re 82 years old and you’ve got an 82-year-old heart but let’s get on this machine.’ Then he’d tell me, ‘Let’s get on that machine.’ I’d say how many and he’d say ‘10.’ He would work me and then he’d say, ‘You can go do whatever you want now.’ And the only thing I’d want to do is go to sleep.” At the world championships, Lombardo was required to bench press three times with a progressively higher amount of weight, while judges monitored his form. He benched 187 pounds on his first lift, 198 pounds on his second and the record 203 pounds on his third. “I called up my wife and kids when I won the championship, and they called everybody else,” Lombardo said. Bellak said Lombardo’s natural strength from years in construction and his late start to powerlifting are the reasons for his success.
“His body is in such good shape,” Bellak said. “He’s not all broken down.” Lombardo credits proper technique for all his medals and trophies. “I’ve never been hurt,” he said. “Most people start in their 20s. I’m all muscle.” Powerlifting also has helped Lombardo control his type 2 diabetes, a condition he’s dealt with for 22 years. “You won’t get too many guys my age willing to pick up weights,” Lombardo said. “They won’t go in the free weight area. You have to have a lot of stamina to go free weights, and you have to have even more stamina to have John as a coach. Everybody is in awe when they watch me lift. Because I’m 82 years old, they all say, ‘I don’t believe it.’ ”

OUR columnists Samsons Island Park – Satellite Beach Touring the Town John Trieste
This month I would like to introduce our readers to Samsons Island Park, Satellite Beach’s first “Environmental Showcase.” Not many readers know about this jewel of a reclaimed island located on the Banana River. Satellite Beach civic leaders, with the help of organizations and volunteers, have transformed this island, that was overgrown with invasive vegetation, to a beautiful destination for the entire family. Samsons Island today is where your family can enjoy hiking on the many nature trails. You can view more than 30 species of birds, including blue herons, egrets, ospreys, spoonbills, woodpeckers and the horned owl. If you have a boat, enjoy boating in the surrounding waters, or fish for trout, redfish, snook and tarpon. You can also camp in the campsites or enjoy a day picnic. Permits are available for those staying overnight. There are many hiking trails and you may come across all kinds of wildlife, including gophers, tortoises, snakes, opossum and the most interesting armadillo. Samsons Island has restrooms,
picnic areas, docks for your boat, kayak landings and an educational pavilion. Ongoing restorations are making this lovely 50-acre island an outstanding and free recreation destination for the entire family. As of this time, there is no drinking water on the island. Samsons Island is truly Satellite Beach’s best-kept secret. Samsons Island is only accessible by boat. Use your own boat or kayak, or the free public boat island transportation that is provided by the city at 1 p.m. each Sunday. If you plan to go, arrive early. There is limited seating on the boat going to the island. Park your car in the lot behind the Satellite Beach Fire Department. The firehouse is located on the corner of South Patrick Drive (Route 513) and Cassia Boulevard. Then, walk west one short block to the island’s boat dock on the Banana River. For readers who want to volunteer in the restoration work on Samsons Island, contact the Satellite Beach Recreation Department, 1089 South Patrick Dr., Satellite Beach, 32937. For more information, call 321-773-6458 or email Kstoms@ satellitebeachrecreation.org. Samsons Island meets my requirement that this day trip be educational, inexpensive and an activity that can be enjoyed by the entire family and your friends. You can access more than 120 of my previous local Florida travel stories by going to travel.myseniorlife.com. SL
Satellite Beach Fire Department provides free access by boat to Samsons Island at 1 p.m. Sundays.
Philosophy in six words Challenges of Living to Age 100 Ed Baranowski
For most of us, the path ahead is shorter than the one behind us. During our journey, we have gained wisdom about living a long life. What have you shared with your children? What is your philosophy of life? If you had six words to describe your life, what

would you say? Ben Dunlap wrote in “The Art of Living” about his 90-year-old student Sandor Teszler: “I was his professor, but he taught me more than anyone I’d ever known.” He was described as “Mahatma Gandhi in orthopedic boots.” He focused on learning and sharing. The students at Wofford College found him “so conspicuously wiser than any of us.” Another senior commented: “It was better than I expected.” Considering what takes place in the decades of a long life, most people agree that life has ups and downs, good and bad, but somehow it has been a good ride.
Love paradox: caring for your love life means first caring for your own The Sandwich Generation Linda Wiggins I’d love to fill this column with helpful tips I can share as an expert about keeping the home fires burning despite the onslaught of pressures experienced by the Sandwich Generation: parenting young children or attempting to keep adult children independent of us, while at the same time we are distracted by the coordination or direct care of our aging parents. But I look around and find that apparently I am not an expert. So I have gone to one, for your benefit as well as my own. Lorraine Edy was my first introduction about a decade ago to the notion that there were people who made a career of being a personal success coach. She is a licensed clinical social worker and has a counseling Ph.D., but made the decision to leave the business of helping broken people be less broken and instead help successful people be more so. She relocated some years ago and I was delighted when coincidence — I’ll call it Providence — caused her to return to Brevard last month. So, I posed the question: what can I do to strengthen my bond with my mate amidst the pressures that have turned us into contented co-parents of upper and lower generations, rarely taking our focus off the task at hand to look at each other? I thought the remedy was going to be the assignment of going on a date, spending time together, getting a babysitter or getting a hotel room. You know where this is going. But it didn’t go there. Instead, Lorraine told me that it is a very common experience that once we get married, we lose ourselves in the relationship and stop taking care of ourselves, losing the vision we once had for our own life. I need to take care of and invest in myself. One old guy stated: “waiting to get the last word.” In the “Pickles” cartoon in the daily newspaper. Earl and Opal go at it every day. Earl learns a lot. He makes profound statements and seeks to add the last word. Those with joy and contentment commented: “I want to live forever.” The path of life has been loaded with blessings, challenges and a positive attitude. With life providing so much, they want to keep on going. Some people continue to plan and look forward to the future. Our fifth grandchild is graduating from high school in May. My wife said “I want to live to see them all graduate.” Now she has a new plan: “I want to live to see them all married.” Musician John Lennon raised the question: “What happens to you while you’re busy making other plans?” People who have a long life have a
SENIOR LIFE
Wow, I could use more stamina as a 53-year-old attempting to engage in play with a 12- and 10-year-old daughter and son, and I could certainly use more stamina dealing with the aftermath of my mom’s peaceful passing three years ago and the destruction of our sibling unit that still remains, and the increasing demands of care for my husband’s mother. Not to mention, what would it be like to treat my own life and my own health as if it were the precious gift I have forgotten about? Coincidence — again, I prefer to call it Providence — then led me to an assignment for Senior Life sister publication Viera MD. The feature on Suntree Chiropractic physician Dr. Marc Gray, himself a senior who does all he can to eat right and exercise to stay fit as a role model for his patients, hit home. I was looking for the “aha!” moment that would make me finally take action to reverse the upward spiral on scale and measuring tape. Face it, we all know we need to eat less, eat better and exercise more. But what can make us want to do that more than eat and rest for pleasure? So, my next step is pivotal. Am I going to proceed on and eventually get on multiple pills to block out symptoms of my procrastination, or am I going to cherish my health as though it is a precious gift? I certainly did this when I was dating, and the result was a wonderful husband. And now for the paradox that caring for myself is the first step toward care of my relationship. Let’s see how I do when I report back next month. I’ll also report back on the next part of Lorraine’s assignment just in time for Valentine’s Day. You guessed it. The date. SL Linda Wiggins is a member of the Sandwich Generation, which refers to persons who must oversee or provide care for an aging parent, while at the same time caring for young children or continuously keeping adult children from returning to the nest. future orientation. “I need to adapt continually” is the mantra of many seniors. They constantly prepare to function in an ever-changing world. They stay connected with an extended family with Internet emails, texting, and skype. When a long flight or road trip is not possible, they are present with kind words and wisdom. “Time is passing quickly and faster.” This observation helps one focus on priorities and risks. Today is the first day of your tomorrow. Every new year, there is the opportunity to look down the path or up the hill. What is your philosophy of life? Aliens are attacking in rusty cars You shouldn’t get too comfortable because we are secretly being taken over by aliens who are deaf and drive rusty cars. No, I’m not nipping at leftover holiday spiked eggnog, I’ve actually seen them. The other day I was out driving in my quiet, relaxing car, when suddenly I heard from a distance what sounded like bombs exploding, and they were getting closer. Now, I had my window closed so I wasn’t getting the full blast of the explosions, but they were remarkably rhythmic. The explosions sounded like, boom, boom-boom, boom, boom-boom and they kept getting louder. I looked in my rearview mirror and didn’t see any debris flying but soon it sounded like the next one would be dropped on my car so I started praying. I was stopped at a light at a busy intersection and couldn’t move. All of a sudden my car started to shake with the rhythmic booms, and as I looked to my right, I saw a rust bucket car, with peeling paint and more Gothic stickers on it than a Dracula movie poster. The driver must have been from a different solar system because though he had eyes, a nose, and what used to be ears, everything else looked pretty extraterrestrial.
Funny thing is... Sammy Haddad The booms were coming from his car radio which could have powered the sound system at the Orlando Arena and his back seat had been replaced by massive, vibrating speakers. The rusted bolts on his car shook with each downbeat as if they were going to fall out. I was going to yell (like he would have heard me anyway) but he had a bolt in his nose attached to his ear with a small chain and I was afraid if he swung his head around he would rip his ear off. After he drove off, I put stuff back on my seats and in my visor, noticed one man’s toupee had shifted, and another’s sunglasses were crooked. These aliens are getting remarkably creative in how they destroy planets because they’ve found a way to damage our stuff and deafen us at the same time. SL
