SENIOR LIFE Darrell Woehler
Gil and Bonnie Baldwin, who live in Fairfax, Va., recently visited the Florida Historical Society’s Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science. While they were there, the museum announced the opening of Greetings from Florida, a bright and shiny new exhibit of souvenir plates, glassware, rocks and even plastic flamingos to decorate the hall.

Museum shows off unique items from Florida BY DARRELL WOEHLER
Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood on Michigan Avenue, west of Clearlake Road in Cocoa, is the Florida Historical Society’s Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science. Within its normal exhibits of a huge Ice Age Mastodon skeleton, a 14-foot tall Giant Ground Sloth skeleton and historical Florida artifacts, now comes a bright and shiny new exhibit of souvenir plates, glassware, rocks and even plastic flamingos to decorate the hall.
This exhibit called Greetings from Florida dates from post-World War II to the pre-Disney tourism boom. There is even a can of Florida Sunshine, with strict rules on how to open it. The Greetings from Florida exhibit features more than 250 items. The items donated by Sandy Barnes will be on display until Sept. 1. The exhibit has been popular among children. Children are given the chance to write their comments and then post them on a large bulletin board. On a Friday outing visit to the museum, Caleb Lang was encouraged
by his mother, Melissa Lang of Satellite Beach, a teacher at Ocean Breeze Elementary School, to leave a short message and his name on the board. “You don’t have to go far and fight big-city traffic to find many places like this right here in Brevard County,” Melissa Lang said. Madeline Calise, the manager and director of the museum, said she is always looking for historical items that might be suitable for an exhibit. Calise
