Stained glass master, artist, self-taught musician, entrepreneur, inventor and educator. This is Stanley Klopfenstine, Cocoa Beach artist. Titled a genius by peers, media and clientele, his humble demeanor hides his many accomplishments. As an artisan in the subject of stained glass for more than four decades, Klopfenstine got his start at the Kansas City (Mo.) Art Institute, followed by a five-year apprenticeship under european glass master, Ron Dixon. That led to certification in stained glass through the U.S. Department Of Labor. With the assistance of his now-deceased wife, Karin, and stepchildren, Klopfenstine, at the age of 28, opened and operated his own studio in Kansas City, Mo. extensive traveling followed throughout the United States as a freelance master. In 1988, Klopfenstine settled in Cocoa Beach. his stained-glass designs have been integrated in churches and businesses throughout the world. Clients include: local musician, Shawn Foster, hard Rock Cafes in Detroit and houston, and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Virginia. his works have been featured in catalogs and magazines and in conjunction with McMow Studios of Lake Worth, Gianni Versace. he is credited with designing and creating fully functioning stained-glass guitars, one of which was commissioned for musician Jimmy Buffett. As carpenter, inventor and entrepreneur, Klopfenstine’s patented accomplishments were profiled on hGTV and local TV programs. he is planning to record instructional DVDs and a series of related books. Surviving many years of challenges as a starving artist and the loss of his beloved wife and stepdaughter, Klopfenstine’s creative passion has never diminished. “As long as I have a pencil and paper, I can work,” he said.

Burgeoning numbers of stained-glass artists from the United States, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Panama, Japan, Australia and other locations have traveled to Klopfenstine’s Cocoa Beach studio for his guidance. he said he gains enormous satisfaction in being able to channel future artists. This year, he completed seven stained-glass windows commissioned for the Chapel of Our Lady at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Suntree. “his creations are fantastic,” said Rev. Jim Daughtry of St. Paul’s. “he is an extremely talented, knowledgeable old-world stained-glass artisan, who combines styles of years past with creative new talents. columnists Highlands Hammock State Park

We recently visited, on a one-day tour, one of the oldest and finest parks in Florida. Highlands Hammock State Park is an easy hour ride, a little more than two hours from Brevard County. This outstanding 9,000-acre park is located just four miles west of Sebring in Highland County. Start your tour of the park at the visitors center to learn that during the Great Depression of the 1930s, President Franklin Roosevelt commissioned the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to develop the park’s many facilities, including an inviting botanical garden. The craftsmanship of the men in the CCC is evident in the lasting quality of the buildings, bridges, numerous trails and playgrounds that are available for us to enjoy 80 years later. Take the one-hour tram tours and travel into remote areas of the park, where you will see alligators, turtles, wading birds and more. The park’s varied habitats provide excellent birding opportunities and are part of the state’s Great Florida Birding Trail. A bird checklist is available at the ranger station. Tram tours are Tuesday through Friday at 1 p.m. Two tram tours run on the weekends at 1 and 2:30 p.m. for a fee. Elevated boardwalks meander through an old-growth bald cypress

swamp filled with cabbage palmettos, Touring ferns, bromeliads, the Town orchids and other plants and flowers. Experts have John estimated that some of Trieste the trees in the swamp may be more than 1,000 years old. One, possibly the largest oak tree in Florida, has a girth of more than 36 feet. Wildlife is in abundance. In addition to the American alligators, you may see white tailed deer, gopher tortoises, frogs, otters and golden silk spiders. All types of birds native to Florida have been seen here. Bobcats and the rare Florida panther have been seen by visitors on many occasions. There are many more things your family can do at this remarkable park. You can participate in bicycling, camping, horseback riding, hiking, picnicking or enjoying the playground. Daily routines and an orderly transition through life provide stability. It appears “different strokes for different folks� applies to a long life. For each person, the journey is unique and different. More people commented that a daily routine provides the stability and firmness in their existence with limited stress and trauma. As I studied the stability factor in long life, I found more evidence that regular routines, a belief in God, religion, prayer, ritual, family connectivity, long-time marriages, friendships, valued work and devoted service to others over time makes the difference. Through a stable passage through life, even with some hiccups, there is the firmness rooted in reasonable expectations, realistic goals, promises met, vows kept and a focus on eternity. Beyond the day-to-day routine, the centenarian sees a promise for tomorrow. They see their time on earth as a short journey, but look forward to the next life. They look at “What do I need today?� and “What do I want?� They follow the thoughts of philosopher Peter Maurin, who wrote: “The world would be better off if people tried to

become better. And

to become better off.� Pressure to accumulate Ed possessions that are Baranowski out of reach creates instability. Stress is good if it challenges one to succeed, to accomplish and to maintain order in life and work. Distress is the harmful factor that creates unrest, chaos and friction. Moving from healthy habits to unhealthy ones disrupts the stability in life. When a loving family caregiver becomes part of the stability in an older person’s life, they both cherish the time and experience of giving, receiving and reminiscing. A steady path prepares people to deal with outside forces of all types. Those who live a long life have the resilience and capability to deal with change. They have a stable structure in place. They plan ahead and know where they are going. Stable seniors have developed a spiritual life, earned a living, managed their resources well and stayed out of debt. They nurture family ties, friendships and relationships, knowing that when you cultivate and nourish there will be growth and an abundant harvest. Tweaking the gray matter While the children in Brevard have already returned to school after summer vacation, we seniors can do things a bit differently. The annual semester for the fall programming of Brevard ElderLearning will begin in September. A semester with a variety of programs offered at different times, different places and different topics will begin on Sept. 13 and end on Dec. 13. Classes are held in Melbourne, Cocoa, Cape Canaveral, Titusville and out of the county in Christmas, Fla. You might find yourself indoors or outdoors, at half-day or full-day programs. For those not yet aware of Brevard ElderLearning, here is more of the information you’ll need to learn more about — and learning lots of things is what this program is all about. By the time you read this, the brochures covering the fall semester programs will have been received by those on the mailing list. The titles of the programs and all the information you need will be sent to you so you can register immediately, since some have early deadline dates. If you would like your outgoing Christmas cards to be postmarked “Christmas,� bring them along and they will be mailed from the Christmas Post Office. The purpose of Brevard ElderLearning programs is to keep your minds alert, challenged, introduced to things you may not know about—or would like to know more—and if nothing else, something new and different for a day at a time. Some programs do have limited seating, so it’s important to register early. If you have any questions about anything having to do with Brevard ElderLearning, the brochure you get will have the phone numbers of volunteers you can call to learn more before you make decisions. Fees are usually quite low and some programs fill up pretty fast, so don’t delay at least into inquiring further about Brevard ElderLearning, learning more about it and then making your own decisions. Retired Air Force Colonel Bill Brandon jokes that he feels ancient when he tells the story of the hospital where he was born. “It was Telfair Hospital in Savannah in 1932,” he said. “The last time we looked, the old hospital had become a museum.” The Georgia boy did not hail from a military family, although his dad served in the Navy during World War I. At the University of Alabama, he zeroed in on a law degree, but the Air Force intrigued him. “On a lark, I took the pilot training test,” he said. He passed, so out went the law books and the Crimson Tide and in came the planes and the Air Force “I was going to be an ace in Korea and shoot down 20 Migs,” he said. Accepted for the aviation cadet program, Brandon was assigned to Hondo and Webb Air Force bases in Texas before heading north with the Strategic Air Command to Plattsburgh Air Force Base. Located by Lake Champlain in the extreme northeast corner of New York, it is just 20 miles from Canada. For a southern boy, the climate change was dramatic. “Little did I know that in February you can drive your car across the lake from Plattsburgh to Burlington, Vermont,” Brandon said. There was also a problem with the Air Force base. It had no runway,

The Air Force eventually made the best of the major inconvenience of an unfinished runway by sending Brandon and his crew to

Pinecastle Air Force Base in Florida. For Brandon, it was one lucky move. In Orlando, he first caught sight of Marie, the Sunshine State girl who has been his wife for more than half a century. Brandon was a pilot buddy of Marie’s brother-in-law. In fact, Brandon and Marie walked down the aisle as part of her sister’s bridal party. This past month, the couple celebrated 55 years of togetherness. The young airman progressed through the Air Force, but with the phase out of the B-47s on the horizon, Brandon revisited the University of Alabama. He speedily earned his degree in industrial management under Operation Bootstrap. “I took 55 semester hours in one year to get the degree,” he said. The 1960s saw Brandon at Homestead Air Force Base as aircraft commander and eventually as wing staff. At the height of Vietnam, Brandon was named chief of the Capabilities Division and assigned to Guam. The glamour phase of Brandon’s career arrived with his promotion to lieutenant colonel as an aide-de-camp to 8th Air Force commander Alvan Gillem. For three fun days, Brandon guided Bob Hope and his entourage when the stars, including Connie Stevens, Ms. World and the Golddiggers, were on tour in Guam. Assignment to the Pentagon followed Guam, as did a promotion to colonel and a job as chief of the Combat Forces Branch. During

President Richard Nixon’s second inauguration, Brandon was asked to serve as military aide to Governor George Wallace. A Parade magazine photo of the inaugural platform shows Brandon behind Wallace, as Bob Hope stands nearby. As Brandon’s career and family thrived, tragedy hit quick and hard in 1975, upending the family’s world in an instant. “We were coming back with the family from a church camp when we were rear-ended by a tractor trailer,” Brandon said. “My 14-year-old son and his friend were in the back, sleeping. His friend was killed and my son was critically injured.” Comatose for three months, Brandon’s son never recuperated. He was plagued with disabilities until he passed away at age 34. Brandon left the Air Force to help his family cope. With the master’s in business administration he earned from George Mason University, Brandon assumed vice presidential roles at both savings and loans and commercial banks before launching his own financial investment firm. The colonel had seen and liked Brevard while visiting Orlando, so in 2001 Brandon and his wife settled into retirement at Indian River Colony Club. With three daughters, their husbands and their nine children, there is no shortage of family reunions. SL

ve Newsom didn’t have time for dolls as a child. She was too busy gazing at the horses that grazed and raced near her home in Grove City, Ohio. Now, dolls have become a passion. But, she hasn’t forgotten about horses. Despite living on the beach at Cape Canaveral, Newsom would have no problems forsaking the beach to live in a place where she could raise horses. “Dogs, cats, pigs and horses—if it’s a four-legged, furry creature, I like it,” said Newsom, who has become famous for transforming ordinary dolls into what she calls reborn goddesses. “I can’t forget about feathers, too. My bird’s over there.” Newsom’s reborn goddesses are so lifelike they can fool shoppers while riding in a baby carriage at the supermarket or while sitting in a child’s protective seat in the backseat of a car. Social experiments have been done to see if onlookers would call the police or break the window of a car to save the ‘dying’ infant in a car on a hot day. Many women are happy to live the fantasy of having a baby without the demands of diapers, bottled milk and cries in the night. “Play dolls didn’t look lifelike—the key is to make it more realistic,” Newsom said. “I take a play doll and make it lifelike through an existing transformation. I want to make it a lifelike-looking infant.” Newsom, who has been featured on CBS’s “Inside Edition” and ABC’s “20/20,” doesn’t always work with someone’s foundation. “I prefer to make things from scratch,” Newsom said. “I can use a clay-cast mold for the body and then use silicone for the head. It’s more complicated, but it’s the same genre. I feel like going the extra yard. This is more for adults with these materials for the pieces. If a child tears it apart, it could be lethal. I have made a line of dolls for kids, which are a little sturdier and with less-volatile ingredients.” The dolls can be ordered and purchased through Newsom’s website at EvesRealisticReborns.com. “My market is difficult to ascertain,” Newsom said. “Through eBay and my website, I have sold dolls all over the world. I guess my average market is for women in their mid-30s to early-50s.” As is the case with many artists, Newsom has several potential projects going through her mind at all times. “I'm now into sculpting,” she said. “It’s so hard to work in three-dimensional when you’re used to one-dimensional. I’m limited by that, but I really want to make something when it’s a challenge. I love big art—I’d love to do a mural. I’d also like to do painting on canvas.” Newsom never studied art in high school or college. “I’d get in trouble for drawing in high school,” she said. “Something would come up in my mind during class, and I had to

off and hit a stake. I needed 150 stitches and I had no skin on the side of my face. I didn’t care; it was fun riding that horse.” SL

Eve Newsom, a self-taught artist, has become famous for transforming dolls into reborn goddesses. The lifelike dolls fool people from time to

I think I’m artistic from birth; I’m self taught and I’m not a genius by any means.” Despite the success in her many projects, Newsom still wonders from time to time. “If I could do it over, I would have found some means to go to an art college,” she said. “It could have opened other (media) for work if I had been exposed to it. It’s kind of blind luck how things have worked out.” Before moving to Florida six years ago with her husband, Bobby Lee Newsom, she socialized with other local artists at the Gallery Hop in Columbus, Ohio. They also raised horses. “I bought my first Shetland pony at 12,” Newsom said. “I saved my money from babysitting at 25 cents an hour. It took all summer and I kept the quarters in a Sucrets tin. I saved $18 in quarters, my mom gave me $2 and they sold me my first pony for $20. I owned horses until I was 40. I made a vow, when I sold my last horse, that I wouldn’t own another until I owned my own place.” Her love of horses should have ended at an early age.

This is what I discovered when I walked into Merritt Assembly of God on Sunday morning, July 29. I went back in time 52 years to attending services there with my friend Andrea, and her grandmother, Aggie. The edifice looked the same on the outside, but I remembered the inside being larger. I recalled the hard pews and visualized the instruments; I could almost hear the pastor’s son playing the heck out of that piano. I was warmly greeted by Pastor Bob Arthurs, with whom I had spoken on the phone earlier. He had explained that they were having a three-night revival featuring Evangelist Patricia Holland. I was excited! I love revivals and I love female preachers. I attended the final service, with Holland preaching on love. This small-of-stature, huge-of-spirit woman, wife, mother and grandmother has spent decades ministering to children. But lately, she’s gone to another level—preaching to adults. And preach she did, with all her heart. “God wants us to rewrite the story of our life,” Holland passionately told the congregation. “His love can only change us when we realize and embrace that love.” When we fall in love, Holland continued,

we want to be with that person, serve them, please them and give to them. “Fall in love with the Lord,” she challenged. Holland’s book, “Pentecost Lost, Don’t Believe It,” is a walk through her life and how she embraced the Pentecostal religion. And, while some believe it is an outdated historical event, she says it’s time for another outpouring of that power experienced in the second Chapter of Acts. My 80year-old aunt says she has Viagra. My aunt? Yes, she went to the doctor the other day complaining of dizziness and says the doctor diagnosed her with Viagra. I think she meant vertigo. Now my uncle may have Viagra, but I wasn’t bold enough to ask. He didn’t look dizzy, anyway, but he did look a little tired. OK, that’s a subject for another day. You know, we seniors don’t always get things exactly right, so the docs need to be careful what they tell us. I saw this elderly friend in the grocery store with orange granules on his head. He had just come back from seeing the doc about his thinning hair. So I asked him what’s up with his head. “Doc said to rub on Metamucil.� Uh, I think he said Minoxidil. I’ve never seen an old guy sprint that fast to his car. Come on folks. Give us a little help here! Write this stuff down for us to make sure we get it right. With all the medical acronyms out there, it’s no wonder we can’t keep

our conditions straight. I don’t know if I’m under an HMO, PPO or POS. The only part I understand is the B.I.L.L. Heck, I thought COPD was a police benevolent group I was supposed to donate to. When my insurer said I needed PCP, I thought HE was on drugs. I didn’t even use that as a teenager. Then, I found out he meant Primary Care Provider. Whew. He could have given me a HA (heart attack), which is no laughing matter so why do they call it “HA?� They say the mind is the second thing to go. I don’t remember what the first is, but as long as they keep making Tequila they can keep their pills and their acronyms and I’ll be just fine. —Dr. Sammy SL

Subdural hematomas, or bleeding between the brain's surface and its outer covering (the dura), can cause dementia-like symptoms and changes in mental function. Exposure to lead, other heavy metals or other poisonous substances can lead to symptoms of dementia. These symptoms may or may not be solved after treatment, depending on how badly the brain is damaged. People who have abused substances such as alcohol and recreational drugs sometimes display signs of dementia even after the substance abuse has ended. This condition is known as substance-induced persisting dementia. In rare cases, people with brain tumors may develop dementia because of damage to their brains. Symptoms may include changes in personality, psychotic episodes or problems with speech, language, thinking and memory. Anoxia and a related term, hypoxia, are often used interchangeably to

describe a state in which there is a diminished supply of oxygen to an organ’s tissues. Anoxia may be caused by many different problems, including heart attack, heart surgery, severe asthma, smoke or carbon monoxide inhalation, high-altitude exposure, strangulation or an overdose of anesthesia. In severe cases of anoxia, the patient may be in a stupor or a coma for periods ranging from hours to days, weeks or months. Recovery depends on the severity of the oxygen deprivation. As recovery proceeds, a variety of psychological and neurological abnormalities, such as dementia or psychosis, may occur. The person also may experience confusion, personality changes, hallucinations or memory loss. The brain requires a high level of oxygen in order to carry out its normal functions. Therefore, problems such as chronic lung disease or heart problems that prevent the brain from receiving adequate oxygen can starve brain cells and lead to the symptoms of dementia. SL

Dear Accountable Care Confused: An Accountable Care Organization (ACO) is a group of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers who work together to provide you with better, more coordinated care. The doctors and hospitals in an ACO communicate with you and with each other to ensure that you are getting both the care you need when you are sick and the support you need to stay healthy. An ACO is not an HMO or an insurance company. An ACO cannot tell you which health care providers to see and cannot change your Medicare benefits. If your doctor participates in a Medicare ACO, you have the right to choose any doctor, hospital or provider that accepts Medicare at anytime. The letter you received is probably your notification that your doctor has chosen to participate in an ACO. You might also see a sign posted in the doctor’s office or a hospital noting this information. How will this benefit you? You will not need to fill out as many medical forms asking for the same information. All of your health care providers will know what tests you have had because that information will be shared among your health-care team. Will you see any changes? What you pay, your Medicare benefit and the cost of your coverage will not increase. You still have the right to choose any hospital or doctor who accepts Medicare, even if that provider is not a part of your ACO. Some ACOs will hire someone to follow up with you after a doctor’s visit or procedure to ensure that you understand how to take your medicine or to schedule a follow-up visit. Is your personal health information protected? While more medical personnel will have access to your medical information, the privacy and security of your medical information is protected by federal law. Will this lead to better care for you? Your healthcare providers will have access not only to the health issues for which they have treated you, but also to information from all of your providers. This will allow them to better coordinate your health care. The Fifth Avenue Art Gallery will host the opening of the exhibit, “100% Pure Florida 2012,” a juried exhibition. Artists from all over the state have entered this competition, and winners are chosen by a panel from the gallery. The show is always an eclectic montage highlighting the various talented artists that live throughout the state. Winners in years past have come from as far away as St. Augustine and Miami. Visit with the artists as you peruse the artwork and enjoy light refreshments. The reception is free and open to the public. Continue your stroll down the street to enjoy dinner, and other shops, galleries as well as the museum in beautiful Eau Gallie. Family bluegrass, gospel band visits Titusville J.T.’s Bluegrass is opening its 20122013 concert season with the Florida debut of the Punches Family in concert.
