The response was overwhelming, so we brought the group back for two more sold-out shows. now, i’ve decided to bring this dinner theater to our county on a quarterly basis. once the details are announced, the shows sell out quickly. if you would like to be placed on our wait list, please visit myseniorlife.com and fill out the form. You’ve probably seen them. They ride in groups and pass by you along the roads of Brevard County, this motorcycle club is making a difference. in fact, they’re retired and active local police officers, the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club. “We’re different than what people think,” said member Mike Connor. “it’s a brotherhood and sisterhood of riders who have come together, and being in law enforcement, the average person doesn’t experience what we do and form the bond that goes outside the job.” Founded locally in the 1980s, the riders are a part of Blue Knights international that was formed in 1974 in Maine and are among more than 20,000 worldwide who range from their early 20s to retirees in their 70s. “The camaraderie is remarkable,” Connor said. “i know if something were to happen to me, they would take care of me and my family. Knowing that is amazing.” The club’s meetings are hosted

throughout the county to support local businesses. An extra attraction of membership is road trips. A big part of the club’s activities is its humanitarian efforts, including donating money to several charities, riding for causes like Fallen heroes and childhood diseases and showcasing motorcycle safety. “We try to ride by example,” said club president Jay Martin, who was a local officer for 31 years. “We want people to learn how to ride safely.” Currently the group is preparing for the Blue Knight international spring conference they’re hosting April 19 through April 22 in Cocoa Beach. “We’re getting prepared for the conference and for members from all over to come and ride with us,” Martin said. “it’s a lot of work. Virginia Gaylor has volunteered with Keep Brevard Beautiful for 24 years. “i have gotten a sense of accomplishment with the many clean-ups and landscape projects. i’ve met a lot of interesting people from all walks of life who also have the need to get involved to keep our living room clean. We have fun and the exercise is invigorating,” she said. since 1994, Tom Williams has volunteered almost 28,000 hours for hospice. GFWC Melbourne Woman’s Club presents Women in suffrage BY roSemary h. lynn

in late February, an exhibit celebrating women’s suffrage was presented by the General Federation Women’s Clubs’ Melbourne Woman’s Club at the liberty Bell Museum in Melbourne across from the Melbourne Auditorium on oak street. This will be a permanent exhibit. Women the world over fought for the right to gain equality with men in many areas of life. American women, after much campaigning and demonstrating, finally gained the right to vote in 1920. The exhibit at the museum honored the women who fought so hard for this right. photos of many of the women

who worked to gain freedoms for other women adorn an entire wall of the museum. This is the first time the museum has had such a display and a presentation to educate citizens about the struggle of those who championed the cause. The exhibit-opening event included refreshments, a welcome by honor America Chairman George Geletko, the invocation by Marion pellicano Ambrose, the Pledge of Allegiance led by Tommy and Maggie Unger, Gemini elementary students, and then the national anthem. After a poetry reading, susan Anderson, museum director, led a tour. The museum houses

Funny thing is… but instead, dabbling is that fun stuff you always wanted to do but never had enough time for when you were working. i dabbled with the idea of writing a humor column, taking up golf, singing and DJing, working my real estate brokerage a little harder, doing volunteer touring for nAsA, offering more time to hospice, the church, the kids and now the grandkids. i’m dabbling so much i’m going to need to check into a rest home just to get some sleep. so now i’m retired and all the stuff i used to dabble with has become my new job—or i should say jobs. But the Funny Thing is…i’m not retired, but i am re-tiring myself. in fact, i don’t remember ever working this hard in my life. now i’m dabbling with the idea of going back to work fulltime to get some rest. The word retirement is so appropriately named. Retiring from our career jobs was supposed to mean rest, travel, golf or whatever relaxes us. Unfortunately, most of us were somewhere between diligent workers and workaholics. so upon retirement, and while we we’re still healthy enough, we find other things to fill our days. This is why the word re-tire-ment is so perfect. All we’re doing is finding new ways to tire ourselves out. When i retired from nAsA, i wanted to do all the fun stuff i used to dabble with. looking back over almost 70 years since i first became a volunteer, it’s been quite an experience. i’ve begun to realize lately that you couldn’t pay me enough to do some of the jobs i’ve done as a volunteer. The satisfaction of helping so many people overcome the negative way volunteers are sometimes treated by “higher ups.” i began to realize there is occasionally a difference between the people who work from the heart and those who work for a paycheck. i first volunteered at the age of 10 because patriotism and helping the war effort was something most Americans did during World War ii. My parents had set examples. My dad was an air raid warden, my mom was the manager of the Russian War Relief store and my grandmother folded bandages for the Red Cross. i gathered friends and neighborhood children to form a salvage club. We went to the apartment houses collecting items needed for the war effort. We collected empty tin cans— and often had to wash them and flatten them ourselves. We also collected cans full of solid cooking fat, the foil from cigarette packages and chewing gum and many other things. As years passed, i saw a need for volunteers and i’d jump in to do what i could. At 18, i became a junior hostess at the Uso and an assistant Brownie leader; eventually, the leader. After my sons were of age, i became a Cub scouts den mother. For years, i worked on the monthly annual fund

drives, going door-to-door collecting money for March of Dimes, The American heart Lucy fund, Muscular Kline Dystrophy, mental health, cancer, etc. in time, i became community chairperson for several of them. As a member of the local Junior Woman’s Club, i became a volunteer at the hospital and other organizations. Years passed, and i became more involved in my own house of worship and ended up wearing five different chairperson hats of different committees or projects. This century, i became volunteer storefront manager for seniors vs. Crime. Then, our local Retired senior Volunteers program, coordinated by Aging Matters in Brevard, discovered me. When i left that position after three years, i became a driver coordinator for senior Transerve, our very worthwhile transportation system for seniors who can’t drive. When the chairperson of Brevard elderlearning begged for a replacement, i finally became that replacement and still am. over the years, i have also been the publicity chairperson for about five different nonprofit agencies. The non-monetary pay i have received from recipients, and from most paid supervisors, is what makes me know just how worthwhile my efforts are and what an important role i am playing in life. As we make our journey through life, we adjust and cope with tasks of living, learning, earning and retiring. As we assume more responsibilities as a student, a marriage partner, a career employee, a parent and a citizen, we are faced with multiple tasks. each task—assigned work, a chore, a duty, a job, or an activity—may trigger priorities. in the process of adjusting to life’s challenges, people learn to juggle a lot of balls when they learn to multi-task. They are able to handle a number of tasks at the same time. i watched an older couple driving to see their grandchildren. The driver was involved in driving, swatting a fly, eating a snack, talking to his spouse and listening to the radio. people who live a long life continue to learn from their experiences and are good at multi-tasking. They may automatically respond, or they may be diligent in handling tasks in priority order while recognizing their benefits and risks. in the book Man Down, by Dan Abrams, he provides proof that women are better in “just about everything.” We see successful career women who are good spouses, parents, volunteers, community leaders and so much more. Behavioral psychologists attribute this ability to how they are wired. Women, single parents and grandmothers raising grandchildren

are better at

Technology has helped with the ability to multi task. in spite of the innovations, we hear more people say “if only i had more time…” Further, they comment, “if the day was only longer!” Actually, we have added more tasks to our lives. There is the internet, cell phones and the multi-tasking iphones that can keep us chained to an electronic device to link with family, friends and lots of people we do not know. people who continue to live a long life pick and choose the tasks they want to perform. Many have simplified their lives by not adapting to all of the technological changes and accompanying tasks. They have priorities. They manage their task challenges in a positive manner. some people meet their love by having friends introduce them. others meet their true love by simply finding them out and about. Well, Karen Rothmel happened to meet her love online. Karen Rothmel’s cat, A.J., died before Christmas last year, so one day she decided to browse around online at petfinder.com to look for a cat. she found a beautiful tiger cat looking out of a glass cage standing on his back paws by the name of Mountain Dew on the society for prevention of Cruelty to Animals (spCA) website. Mountain Dew coincidentally happens to be her granddaughter’s favorite drink; therefore, she hurried on down to the spCA pet adoption center and met the love of her life at first sight.

Otto Watson, 97, of Cape Canaveral graduated from The Tuskegee Institute just before the creation of the famous Tuskegee Airmen. Watson was a leader in the New York transportation union and helped to create vocational education programs. at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama and served with the 332nd Fighter Group during World War ii, became known as Tuskegee Airmen. Reflecting American society and law at the time, most black soldiers and sailors had been restricted to labor battalions and other support positions. “They said they didn’t have brains enough to fly, but they proved them wrong. i was so hurt that i couldn’t fly with them but they weren’t taking men with children and i was already a dad. even at my age now, i would love to fly. i’m just sorry i couldn’t have been a part of it. Those boys put everything into it,’’ he said. Another unforgettable highlight of his time at Tuskegee was studying under George Washington Carver, in 1933.

“it was during his last year of teaching,’’ he said. Watson, a Brevard resident since 1976, started hosts of Brevard and served as chairman of the Christmas party at MilA elementary (Motivated, independent, lifelong Achievers) for 34 years. M.i.l.A. also stands for Merritt island launch Area, the schools formal name. Before that, he retired as the assistant to the president of the transportation union in new York City. “i’ve been helping people all my life,’’ he said. But he is most proud of his work in getting vocational education offered in public schools. “That has always been my pride and joy. i accomplished more with that than with anything else,’’ he said. sybil Gage has made a name for herself in Brevard as the jazzy/bluesy singer who draws in crowds of people wherever she performs. A fantastic singer, she holds her own as “Diva extraordinaire,� her petite figure decked out in gorgeous dresses, colorful feathered boas and art deco-style hats. sybil grew up in new orleans. At the age of 3, her mother left the family and sybil’s father, a librarian, became a single parent. his love of reading and poetry made sybil long to make her own voice heard. she picked up on his musical cadence and sang along with the poems. Gage learned to write music before she began her singing career. she learned to play piano and guitar but it wasn’t until she was in her 20s that she realized she’d like to try to make it as a singer. Moving to new York, she joined the hank edmunds Trio in Jamaica, n.Y. and became an instant success.

she met her second husband, Billy, in new York. he was a local actor who had made a name for himself. she and Billy brought sybil’s father from where he had relocated to Chicago, to Florida, where he lived until he passed away in 2005. sybil and her band, the Catahoulas, perform most nights in Brevard County. leon olguin, Carl lewis, Dennis Thompson, Joe “survival� Caruso and Gage play at a variety of venues and for special events. Gage also hosts a saturday evening radio show called Stormy Monday, writes a column for a Welsh magazine and pens her own music. she also is the proud mom of a 27-year-old son who resides in n.Y. sybil and Billy often take off on little adventures together, but they do not own a TV. “Television interrupts life,� Gage said. “i’d never get anything important done if i had the TV on!� For more information go to sybilsings.com. Kenneth eastridge remembers the celebration of the end of World War ii in Times square in new York City on August 14, 1945. he was there and witnessed everyone kissing. it was a time for rejoicing because the war was over. Wine was being passed around. All the saloons were open. The strict Baptist blushed as he said, “i kissed seven different women that night.� According to eastridge, he had disembarked from the USS Hermitage at the time with several of his friends. The buses had come to the hospital at st. Albams in long island, n.Y., to take them to Times square. otherwise, he may not have experienced the confetti, fireworks, bands, applause, cheers, kisses, ringing church bells and the other excitement. Joining the navy when he was 17 years old, eastridge was the youngest member of the ship’s crew. he served from April 17, 1943 through March 11, 1946 when he received an honorable Discharge with a Victory Medal. he had sailed to the panama Canal in the ship Casablanca which was renamed the USS Hermitage after hitler had tried to sink it along with the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary, which were a part of his convoy. eastridge said, “each of these ships held more than 9,000 people and sailed 22 knots, which is approximately 25 miles per hour.� During his short military career, eastridge visited new Zealand, Australia, Bora Bora and europe. After leaving the navy, he moved to Florida where he was a welder at Cape Canaveral.

hand clapping, feet tapping and smiling faces are standard responses on the days that lynn pinto and Bob Faller walk through the doors at Joe’s Club, the Brevard Alzheimer’s Adult Day Care center in Titusville. pinto visits the center twice a month and Faller is there weekly. They both agree that one of their favorite places to volunteer is Joe’s Club, visiting with about 40 clients who attend the center each weekday. interesting, fun activities are scheduled by sharon harris, aide and activity director at Joe’s. “We love volunteers!� harris said. “We provide most of our activities using generous, loving volunteers and we are so grateful for them. We can never have too many.� Faller leads a cappella singa-longs comprised of oldies from the 1930s and 1940s. Faller said he does a lot of singing around north Brevard and st. paddy tunes are among his favorites. he loves classical music and songs made popular by crooners such as Frank sinatra. he also enjoys performing football cheers,

The Merritt island national Wildlife Refuge is 140,000 acres set aside to preserve the natural resources surrounding the Kennedy space Center. The grounds around the refuge visitor center are finely manicured and immaculate, the pathways are wheelchair or stroller accessible, with benches for people to relax and enjoy the scenery — and possibly view a wild animal or two. scheduled bus tours led by refuge staff or volunteers are available to see the various refuge fauna. To keep that habitat maintained, projects are assigned to people by the refuge manager, someone who has many years of experience in that field of expertise. Born in Fort pierce and now living in Titusville, refuge manager layne hamilton has been at the Merritt island national Refuge since november 2009. The agency she works for is the United states Fish and Wildlife services. she has been employed by that agency for 25 years and has served at national wildlife refuges throughout the southeastern United states. she has worked at several different refuges in Florida, including J.n. “Ding” Darling national Wildlife Refuge in sanibel island, and Florida panther national Wildlife Refuge in naples. she has degrees in wildlife management from both the University of Florida and louisiana state University. she said she enjoys this field of work because she wants “to protect our natural resources by striving to manage habitats that benefit the local wildlife.” she also finds it meaningful working with people, both visitors and partners, on the refuge and in the community. Humphrey hope for north Brevard (hFnB)is the brainchild of Trey Gordon. in 2004 Gordon saw a true need in north Brevard. he enlisted as many young people as possible to help others in the area, mostly elderly and veterans, thereby helping themselves. The result was project Titusville. During the most recent project Titusville, in late March, teens from local middle schools and high schools each donated $50 apiece and gave up their spring breaks to spruce up the homes of needy residents. These teens, according to Gordon, are recruited from the ranks of many places of worship in north Brevard. “instead of one church in isolation trying to do all the work, we partner together and the many churches become resources in the community,” said Gordon, a licensed minister with 15 years experience as a youth pastor. “Right now we partner with the members of more than 30 churches. They support our work in many ways including prayer, thrift store support, with project Titusville, through finances or food and with volunteers to do the work.” Gordon said that volunteers are needed in all areas, including workers at the thrift store, which opened in 2009; concession stands at sporting events, mentors, tutors, graphic designers and other areas that someone with a passion wants to donate time to teach the youth. hFnB operates a gym, a computer lab, a cultural arts center and the thrift store. “if someone likes the arts and is talented, perhaps they could help us write and perform a show. We can always use help with the kids at camps and with back to school projects,” he said. “We will use everyone who is willing to give their resources and time.” The hope for north Brevard Thrift store is located at 2214 Garden st. hope Counseling Center is located at 416 pine st., both in Titusville. Deciding whether your Association needs a professional management company boils down to two simple questions. What does a management company do? Generally, a management company administers the business affairs of the Association. This includes arranging all meetings, taking minutes, creating and implementing budgets, accounting, overseeing vendors and implementing rules and regulations. There are many details to each of these items and each Association may want to add or subtract from the list. The management company reports to the Board of Directors. Why can’t we do these things ourselves? Associations certainly can and many do. some Associations have residents who are willing to dedicate the time required. With more than one volunteer, you may be able to take advantage of their special interests. For example, some volunteers are knowledgeable in landscaping and enjoy it. someone else may enjoy accounting or record keeping. smaller Associations may find it more cost effective to manage themselves. Association Board members are volunteers. Their incentive to serve is the welfare of the Association. They have families, full time jobs or other interests and responsibilities that may keep them from providing the time required. Many retirees quickly decide that retirement does not mean working for the Association it is not unusual to find Boards made up of snowbirds. A professional property management company alleviates these situations. There must be well defined communications and reporting procedures between the Board and management. When this is accomplished and the management company understands its parameters, continuity and synergy are established for the Board. Florida requires property managers be licensed and keep abreast of the latest developments of their profession by taking continuing education courses throughout the year. Therefore, Boards can rely on management companies to provide a broad depth of resources that may not be readily available to the Association. hiring an outside company relieves your Board of the burdens and rigors of property management. This means peace of mind for the Board and residents alike. Choosing the right management company allows you to enjoy your home and maintain the property values of your Association. Financial advisor Richard sabino, who is the founder of the Central Florida Winds, vividly remembers trying his hand as conductor, as a young teen, in front of his family stereo. Fast forward to today, he is thrilled to have been selected to conduct a Ukrainian orchestra in Dnepropetrovsk. The special March 24 concert includes Brahms’ Tragic Overture, stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2. A 1969 graduate of Melbourne high school, sabino started playing trumpet and piano at age 6. he received a bachelor’s degree in music education and performance from the University of south Florida and a master’s in art administration from the University of illinois, springfield. he later became manager of several orchestras, including the

Florida Gulf Coast symphony orchestra, the Atlanta symphony orchestra and the Wichita symphony orchestra. he was the first salaried manager of the Brevard symphony orchestra. sabino left nonprofit arts management in 1991. he returned to Melbourne and joined the Community Band of Brevard and Melbourne Municipal Band, where he had been a member in 1968-1969 and again in 1974-1975. he founded Central Florida Winds in 1999 and the Central Florida Chamber Winds two years later. More than half the performers commute from out of Brevard County, according to sabino. “i’m pleased that the group has hung together well. if we weren’t doing something right, it wouldn’t have held together,’’ he said.

sabino enjoyed performing and orchestra management, but neither is his true love in terms of music. “i’ve always had an interest in conducting, from the time i was young, conducting in front of the stereo. i’ve always snuck in to watch other conductors to see what they were doing. This is fun and something i’ve always wanted to do. it becomes a passion,’’ he said. in 2008, sabino completed the professional course of the Michael palmer international Conducting Workshop with the new Atlanta philharmonic. in 2010, sabino was guest conductor of the space Coast symphony orchestra. Conducting the Ukrainian orchestra “is going to be a good experience for me. it will definitely be a highlight. This will be the next step for me,’’ he said. SL

Far too many drivers have children and grandchildren endangered because they are improperly fastened in car safety seats. important information on how to get it right is provided by Gayle Whitworth, certified child passenger safety instructor, who teaches classes and also conducts safety checks at the University of Florida Brevard County extension service offices in Cocoa and palm Bay. The palm Bay extension office, which closed in september 2011 because of budget cuts, reopened in January. “The basic design of car seats hasn’t changed much over the years, but the safety features have, like additional foam and side-impact testing,� Whitworth said. Up to 90 percent of all car seats are misused because of the selection of the seat, its orientation, location in the car or improper installation, according to Whitworth. “sometimes it’s a combination of all four,� she said. infants should be rear-facing until they weigh 20 pounds or are 1 year old, but Whitworth said even longer is safer. “They need to stay rear-facing as long as possible to avoid head and neck injuries,� she said. Whitworth suggests the use of booster seats for children older than four who can fit into a regular seat with regular seat belts hitting

Home health care has been a key factor for people looking to get the help they need, while staying where they want to be: home. With the help of the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation, Senior Life will introduce a different kind of dementia each month, to help our readers become more familiar with the symptoms involved with them. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an agerelated, non-reversible brain disorder that develops over a period of years. Initially, people experience memory loss and confusion, which may be mistaken for the kinds of memory changes that are sometimes associated with normal aging. However, the symptoms of AD gradually lead to behavior and personality changes, a decline in cognitive abilities such as decision-making and language skills, and problems recognizing family and friends. AD ultimately leads to a severe loss of mental function. These losses are related to the worsening breakdown of the connections between certain neurons in the brain and their eventual death. AD is one of a group of disorders called dementias that are characterized by cognitive and behavioral problems. It is the most common cause of dementia among people age 65 and older. Constance parker Graham said, “Though today may bring some clouds and rain, the horizon holds the promise of change , for a glimpse of sun can help you see how much brighter tomorrow will be.” This quote sustained Brevardian linda Bradley throughout her journey with cancer. in 2005, during an annual physical examination, linda mentioned to her internist her eye was constantly watering. she was told she probably had a blocked tear-duct. not satisfied with the answer, she sought a second opinion from Titusville ophthalmologist Dr. Ronald Ryan, which lead to confirmation of his diagnosis through Dr. l. neal Freeman of Florida eye Associates. Bradley had been diagnosed with non-hodgkin’s lymphoma of the left eye tear duct, caused by chemicals entering the eye, that morphed into a lymphoma. prior to this incident, Bradley had never experienced any major medical concerns. space Coast Cancer Center partnered with the Tampa-based Moffitt Cancer Center to begin an aggressive treatment plan of chemotherapy and radiology. Throughout treatment, Bradley remained upbeat, positive and confident that she was in the right place and receiving the best care possible. While at Moffitt, she became a vigorous cancer care advocate, and continues to serve as an officer on the board of space Coast Cancer Foundation and as a member of the volunteer board of Moffitt Cancer Center. Dedicated to the enhancement and well-being of all interests of the maritime community, on a national and international basis, the international propeller Club of the United states is a grassroots, non-profit organization, with membership throughout the world. The propeller Club educates legislators and the public regarding the importance of all waterborne commerce. With membership exceeding 10,000 worldwide, the propeller Club was conceived in 1922. in 1927, the propeller Club of the United states, as a national and international organization, was formed, with individual member clubs designated as ports. The club believes the continued health of the U.s. Merchant Marine is enhanced by vibrant international maritime commerce and comprises a cross section of the maritime industry. “propeller” in the name refers to the propulsion of ships, and is symbolic of the driving force required for Americans to appreciate the need for an adequate, privately-owned merchant marine for overseas and domestic commerce. According to local club president, Brendan McMillin, the propeller Club of port Canaveral was formed in 1999 with goals to promote the interests of port Canaveral and the local maritime community, provide educational opportunities and scholarships to local students and foster dialogue among the members of the maritime community, private enterprise and local, state and federal entities. The club adopted a space on the Barge Canal as its Keep Brevard Beautiful area and hopes, with the aid of the port Authority, to turn it into a park. local meetings are held at 11:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at Fishlips in port Canaveral. Membership is open to the public. How do I know? Money is tight now, and if the policy is not needed, I could surely use the cash for other purposes. Money Matters

Dear Money Matters: it is great that you are thinking ahead. This year alone, about nine million Americans will need long-term care (lTC). By 2020, that number is expected to grow to 12 million. Your risk for needing lTC is based on a variety of factors, including your age, marital status, gender, lifestyle, health and family history. look to your parents. how did they age and what problems did they have or are they having? We can get a good picture of how we will age from family history. Additionally, if lTC is needed, what sort of facility would you want to live in? or, do you want to remain in your home? Will your children allow you to move in with them, or do you even want to do that? What will all this cost? now that is a big one. Do i want to purchase lTC insurance or do i have sufficient funds in my portfolio to carry me through the end of life? These are just a few questions you need to consider. As you know, Medicare benefits are only for skilled care, which is health care given when you need skilled nursing or rehabilitation staff to manage, observe and evaluate your care. however, most of us will need custodial care to assist with activities of daily living like preparing food, dressing, bathing, or using the bathroom. Veteran recalls experiences as a poW By linda S. humphrey

World War ii veteran lonnie Johnson recently celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by family and friends who crowned him “King for a Day.” Johnson and his wife, edna, live in Cocoa with their little dog Foxy. having lived in many countries during his life, he said there is nowhere in the world he would rather be than “right here.” Johnson, a survivor of 14 months in a 1943 German prison camp, is overcome with emotion as he recalls events and atrocities that most people could only imagine. perhaps that is because his great-grandfather, hartwell Johnson, a Confederate soldier in the Georgia infantry, was captured by the Union army, “the yankees.” After his release, he fought in several major battles and was wounded. he was with Gen. Robert e. lee at the surrender at Appomattox, Va. From there, he walked home to Georgia. lonnie Johnson, a Braxton, Ga. native, comes from hearty stock. he was drafted into the Army in 1942 when he was 20. After a stint in Bizerte, north Africa, in the 45th infantry Division, he was deployed to sicily. After being captured at Anzio he was

They fed us a slice of bread made of wheat and sawdust and one cup of water a day,”

recalled Johnson, who went from a weight of 125 pounds to 92 pounds while imprisoned with other American, Russian, French and British soldiers.

he also vividly recalls standing in a line with about 25 others waiting for a firing squad to kill them before the captain stopped the action. on April 27, 1945, he and the others were released. Johnson recovered his health and went to nuremberg as a military police officer during the nazi war crime trials. he guarded hermann Goering who had been appointed by Adolf hitler to be his first successor. Goering, the commander in chief of the German Air Force, was found guilty for crimes against peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity. “We had a little vindication with the trials,” said Johnson, who retired in 1964 after 21 years in the U.s. Army. “i got a letter saying they wanted me to go to Vietnam, so i retired,” he said, smiling. Johnson appreciates the 10 awards he received for his service, including the Bronze star for Valor. he cherishes every day and finds something positive with every sunrise. he loves writing poetry and is a published author. The father of three also has four stepchildren, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. When asked what he would say to someone who says they are too old to make a difference, he responded, “You are never that old.” SL

Crazy hats promote fun and funds for the Titusville Garden Club

The Titusville Garden Club center recently came alive with a potpourri of brightly colored hats for a fundraising luncheon. each attendee was asked to design a hat using a limitless imagination. Dozens responded. The Crazy hat luncheon, attended by more than 60 members and guests, was held at the TGC center in Titusville. Member Georgia Kirby served as chairperson for the event. A fashion show was sponsored by laRu’s Vintage Medley Thrift store, also in Titusville. A great turnout and participation by so many hat designers made the day successful and full of fun, according to member Yvette Boodhoo. Winners of the hat contest were eula Williams, suzanne steidl, edna Willis and Karen Webb. since its organization in 1933, TGC has been active in the community. The center and gardens offer a gardening library, landscape design programs, butterfly garden, quiet garden and wedding garden to inspire greater use of these types of plants locally. Among other annual contributions are clean up campaigns, landscaping of public buildings, floral arrangements honoring space heroes, promoting junior gardeners, maintenance of Centennial park and Florida Arbor Day recognition. in 1965, the club dedicated The Blue star Memorial Marker on Us1.

The 8th Annual Rotary Chili Cook-off was hosted by the Titusville Rotary Club and the Titusville sunrise Rotary Club on Feb. 24. Contestants furnished at least five gallons of chili and their own heat sources; the sponsors provided spoons, bowls, napkins and tables. Table decorations were important and another chance to win a prize. prizes included first, second, third, people’s Choice and others. Thirty individuals and organizations competed for the $1,000 first prize. Many visitors paid $10 for a ticket to eat chili from a variety of recipes. some returned for second servings and a steady stream of people lasted throughout the evening. First prize was awarded to indialantic Rotary Club and to Country Acres Children’s home took home the second place award. The City of Titusville won third place with people’s Choice going to Bristow Air Academy. Judges gave the award for the Best Decorated Table to the north Brevard Funeral home. SL

Technology is no stranger to spencer lane By george White A wave of new technology accompanied the development of the personal computer, and spencer lane of port orange was riding that wave. lane in the late 1960s, he was a field product manager for perkin-elmer, based in norwalk, Conn., selling electron microscopes, mass spectrometers and devices for liquid chromatography. “it’s a method of taking the whole of something and breaking it down into its constituent parts. We were involved with new generations of computers needed to analyze the data generated by new instruments. They were converting analog to digital format. instead of taking months, it would take hours,’’ he said. lane created the company Japanese products Corp., “when Japanese products were just starting to be imported,’’ he said. A key change at the time was the creation of the Japan external Trade organization that required suppliers have licenses before they exported goods. “That’s the way Japan has come to be known for a high quality product,’’ lane said. The world changed dramatically in the mid-1970s with the first personal computer developed by Apple “That brought personal computing onto the desktop,’’ he said. he said that change brought the need for high precision motors for printers and floppy disc storage. “We were one of the first companies to manufacture the motors and the demand just exploded for them. in essence: in 2003, the Burpo family had a harrowing experience when their youngest child, Colton, became deathly ill with a burst appendix. he was almost 4 at the time. Through much trial and tribulation, they rushed him to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. While on the operating table, he slipped into an unconscious state. in the moments that passed, he claims to have gone to heaven. in the months that followed, Colton, in his childlike frankness, describes what happened in his near-death experience. The family had their doubts about his stories until he talked about meeting family members who had passed away before he was born. he even saw and described God and God’s throne as “really, really big.� Colton’s father tells the story and many times uses Colton’s words. scripture abounds in this book. personal opinion: Being raised by devout Christians, Colton has heard the descriptions he used for heaven many times in his young life. The plus side is that the pastor did a fine job teaching his son the Bible. it is a matter hermeneutics, or interpreting of Bible texts. For me it was not convincing. SL

sea turtle nesting season begins SPECIAL TO SENIOR LIFE

sea turtle nesting season has begun in Brevard County and will be in effect through oct. 31. leatherback sea turtles begin to come ashore in March and lay their eggs. leatherbacks, the largest living turtles, are typically six to eight feet in length and weigh approximately 1,200 to 1,500 pounds. They are the rarest of the three sea turtle species that nest in Brevard County, and are listed as an endangered species. Brevard County residents and visitors are reminded to shield or turn off beachside lights, limit beach walking at night, avoid using flashlights or flash photography

While Brevard County and its municipalities have local lighting ordinances to protect sea turtles, the ordinances do not take effect until May 1 when loggerhead sea turtles begin to nest in large numbers. Green sea turtles follow shortly thereafter, with thousands of nests by the end of the season.
