Happy Anniversary to Senior Life!

This month marks the 11th anniversary of Senior Life and just like any 11-year-old; we know we have not fully reached our potential, despite how much we’ve grown and how much we’ve learned. We have changed over the past 11 years and we know we couldn’t have done it without your support and encouragement. A full service You’ve probably noticed we have some new names in our family retirement community of writers and photographers, but we still have many of the names you’ve come to recognize and trust. Lucy Kline has been a favorite columnist with Senior Life for many years and Mary Brotherton has been writing features almost as long. Martha Masiello has also been with us several years. November 2011

Happy Thanksgiving! What are the holidays, if not opportunities to pass on traditions and family rituals? My husband’s family holds hands around the steaming banquet on Thanksgiving while each person states at least one thing for which he or she is grateful. This year, I think I will try to find something different for which to give thanks. Certainly, I am thankful that I married into a wonderful family and I am most appreciative of my good health. I am delighted to live in a comfortable home and that I have the opportunity to work at a job I was called to do — a job that I truly love — but my list this year may go something like this: I have the honor to work with a talented team of writers, photographers, designers, marketers, sales people and distribution staff who work as a team to put a high-quality product in the hands of some of the most amazing people in our county and beyond. I am thankful that I have been able to meet some of the terrific advertisers, some of the nicest people in the county. I am grateful that each month, I am allowed to write my personal note and sometimes, you call or email or stop by the office to acknowledge how my words touched you. Thank you for allowing me into your lives again this month, As always, Mary Brotherton

The sweet smell and the green needles may be the first thing that normally comes to mind when thinking of a Christmas tree. But for Cape Canaveral Hospital, it’s lights. The hospital is once again launching its annual appeal that enables staff and volunteers, and now members of the community, to donate money to a worthy cause and in return dedicate a light in their names for those dear to them. These lights will form the outline of a Christmas tree along the side of the hospital building. “I think it’s a wonderful idea,” said Betty Hanson. “I had no idea there was more to the lights of the tree and now that I do and I plan to donate.” What began as a simple charity amongst hospital volunteers almost 25 years ago, to help benefit the hospital and community, is now a countywide effort to offer a wide range of clinical and support serv-

ices to those in the surrounding area in need. While the charity serves as an act of remembrance and celebration of life, it has proved highly popular with hundreds of donations each year. Volunteers hope it stays that way. This year’s goal is the largest one yet, hoping to raise $25,000 to purchase cardiac defibrillators, which will be permanently installed in all of the hospital’s operating rooms. “It benefits the hospital, but it also benefits the people in the community who might go to the hospital — it’s twofold,” said volunteer Dick Barnes. “It’s a requirement and regulation to have the defibrillators now and we plan to purchase them with the donations we receive. But best of all it ties one’s donation directly from someone to somebody they love and it’s partially funded because of them.” For information email lightsoflove25@yahoo.com or call 321-799-7617. SL

VETERANS COURT Continued from page 1 representatives of the community on the plan. Goals are to improve access to needed mental health and addictions treatment for jailed veterans; reduce criminal recidivism through successful treatment and community reintegration; improve long-term community reintegration through involvement; resolve felony charges related primarily to mental health, PTSD and addiction issues; reduce jail time; and reduce costs associated with unnecessary incarceration. Judge Linda Schoonover of the 18th Circuit Court, which covers Brevard and Seminole counties, wants to expand veterans court to both counties and beyond. “Once in a while in this very complex and heart-breaking job, there comes a very simple solution. This is an obvious win for everyone involved,” Schoonover said. For more information, call Murphy’s chambers at 321-637-5641. SL

Funny thing is… BY SAMMY HADDAD

Not all cures will cure what ails you. This observation comes from an unplanned, unscientific discovery of recent occurrence. A friend drank some herbal tea which he believed would help sooth his sore throat. After sipping his fourth cup of tea and making his sixth trip to the men’s room, he decided to read the packaging, only to find the herbal remedy was to cure constipation. Mistakes like this can really be, how shall I say this? Irritating. Now, we all know people who will expertly recommend stuff to help us cure what ails us. However, I would strongly advise research before believing your golfing friends who overnight acquired the medical expertise of a Harvard or Yale physician just because the stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. When messing around with herbal cures, make sure you know what you’re doing. For example, a lawyer who loves the taste of basil may brew and drink a

pot of basil tea to relax. Oh yeah, it’ll relax, all right. They’ll wake up within a couple of days of the end of the trial. Basil tea is a sedative recommended to cure sleeping disorders! Good morning, counselor. You may want to have a cup of coffee while you’re looking for a new firm. Sage or barley teas might have a delightful flavor to them, but if you’re generally an energetic person and you have a few cups of those you may find yourself talking like that speed-talking guy on steroids from the old Fed Ex commercials. After they peel you off the ceiling you can look at the packaging and you’ll find sage and barley are recommended to cure depression. Finally, and I’m going to be careful with this one, if you’re still an active adult I strongly recommend you moderate if you drink Kava Kava tea. Why? Let’s just say if you drink a lot of that tea, don’t visit the neighbors unless they are really close friends with no inhibitions. So if someone ever tries to set you up on a blind date with a tea toddler don’t assume its going to be boring. You might be in for the experience of your life. Dr. Sammy SL

Over time, the fair added premiums for arts and crafts, canning and baking. “Premium contests attract a wide range of Brevard County citizens, but what unites them all is dedication and commitment to their passion,” said Brittany Bethel, coordinator of competitive exhibits. “Many contestants spend months preparing their entries and hope to leave the fair with a ribbon and a smile.” Competitions are open to the public, and all information about the competitions can be found by going on the Brevard County Fair website: www.brevardcountyfair.com. Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge A great local gem of a one-day visit is the nearby Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge located within the Indian River Lagoon between the Sebastian Inlet and the Wabasso Causeway. This small island is the first national wildlife refuge established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903. The refuge was created to protect egrets and other birds from extinction by plume hunters. Early in the 20th century, bird plumes for ladies’ hats were the height of fashion, and feathers were in great demand. Public facilities on the refuge were made open to the public in 2003 as a part of the centennial celebration of Pelican Island and the National Wildlife Refuge System. The facilities include a boardwalk and observation tower to view Pelican Island and two salt marsh trails as well as restrooms. Nesting birds are very easily disturbed. Refuge hours are 7:30 a.m. to sunset, daily. Please note that access to the island itself is restricted to outside of the posted closed area signs around the island. The best time to visit is during nesting season in late November through late July. You can expect to see brown pelicans, wood storks, white ibises, double-crested cormorants and a wide variety of herons. In the waters surrounding Pelican Island, you will also see marine life in the Indian River Lagoon including sea turtles, dolphins and manatees. If you are considering a boat tour of Pelican Island, boats are available at the inlet marina at the Sebastian Inlet

in Melbourne Beach. Private eco-tours are offered with a licensed captain and guide. Reservations are encouraged, as times and availability change with weather and seasonal demand. A twohour tour takes you to Indian River Lagoon and Pelican Island National wildlife Refuge. On three–hour tours, you will see the spoil islands, formed when the Intracoastal Waterway was built. Pontoon boat rentals are also available. Viewing the island by boat offers excellent, up-close wildlife and photography opportunities. Visit sebastianinlet.com for more details. For lunch or dinner, when you are in this area, I always recommend Shutters at the Disney Resort located on A1A just south of Route 510 in Vero Beach. Call 772-234–2076 for more information. Getting to all these gems is easy. Take A1A south from Route 192 in Melbourne and drive 18 miles to the Sebastian Inlet Bridge. Cross over the Sebastian Inlet State Park Bridge, south of Melbourne Beach, continue for three miles and turn right onto Historic Jungle Trail. Call 772-4694275 for more details. SL

Grandparents As one generation succeeds another, parents relive the time of the beginnings of their own families in the life of a new born. The role of the grandparent can be intimate and day-today or distant but special. With a highly mobile society, children leave the nest and move to new locations. Families are scattered across the globe. The joyful process of bonding can happen whether close by or far away. People who enjoy a long life find ways to connect and to be part of the life of grandchildren. At first, the grandparent looks at the challenges to include geographic distance, religious and social differences, job/work schedules, economic and social status divides, family conflicts and differences in rearing children. Often grandparent love is provided as a regular caregiver in the same city in support and relief of the new family. There is the far-away grandparent sharing special visits and events. The involvement in either case includes emotional, spiritual, mental and occasionally financial support. Grandparenting includes the extension of your legacy. Sharing your stories, wisdom, knowledge and being a companion at special events and milestones. Using a grandparent’s calendar helps to bridge the time gaps. Marking the calendar with birthdates and special events, sending cards and gifts, making telephone calls, using the web video camera feature on your personal

Budget challenges Ed can be overcome by Baranowski making adjustments in family finances. By setting aside $10 each week, an airline ticket can be available twice each year. If the trip involves auto transportation, set aside funds weekly for gas and travel. Check with other grandparents who may have grandchildren in areas near your own. Share auto travel expenses. Look for bargain air flights during quiet non-holiday periods. Network with people at your church, community center and workplace to get their input. Share your challenge and add to the solutions. They may have un-used frequent flier miles, coupons and other travel perks they would donate to you. Share your concerns with your child (the new parent). Many do not know about your finances or circumstances. Young professionals often can send a round trip airline ticket so grandma can spend quality time with the grandchild while the parents head off to a business meeting or vacation. Think positive and make being a grandparent a win-win situation.

Reasons to give thanks With the approach of our annual Thanksgiving holiday, we all think about the dinners together with friends and family and the thought of enjoying some of our favorite holiday dishes, often carried over several generations within a family. But how often do we really think of what we have to be thankful for? Over my lifetime, I have many causes to be grateful, both small and large in meaningfulness, but there are just a few that stand out at all times. The first one was my father teaching me how to handle money, budget and be frugal during the Great Depression phase of my childhood, so the ups and downs in life have been fairly easy to live through. A greater legacy I could not have wished for. The next thing that stands out is what I refer to as my healthy genes. Considering my age and watching other seniors around me who have not been so fortunate, I’ve been blessed with healthy genes and the illnesses that become fairly common in old age have not yet affected me. That’s not to say I’m not aging, which I definitely am in different ways, but so far nothing that would tie me down to an inactive life or have me running to doctors as frequently as many do when nearing my age. The third very important reason I feel I must give thanks is having had four children, now grown, who were born

My Point of View Lucy Kline

healthy and have pretty much stayed so during all the childhood and growing up years, even to these times when two have already passed the half century mark in

life. There are other things as well. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to live in many places; travel the country and really see it; the experiences I’ve had with all my volunteer positions; the chance to know many people from many different cultures, nations and religions and learn of these other cultures and religions. I’m thankful for the way all my children have turned out to be self-reliant, independent adults who have given me much to be proud about. There are other things I’d add to this list. I count my blessings every day, blessings that greatly override some things that sure don’t qualify as items to be grateful for, but those to be thankful about far overshadow the other end of the scale. May you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday this month and don’t forget to really count your blessings. Comments always welcome — asklucy3@juno.com. SL

Sleuths troupe performs to sold out crowd BY MARY BROTHERTON

This spring, to celebrate 14 years in publication, SENIOR LIFE brought a troupe of actors from Sleuths Mystery Dinner Theater Show in Orlando for an evening of laughter and mystery-solving fun. Within two weeks, 200 seats had sold out and another 50 added. Those sold out before the end of the next week. With such a tremendous response, the publisher of VieraVoice/Senior Life brought another unique show to Brevard County and again, held it at Viera Holiday Inn. The difference this time was the addition of a matinee show and while not as popular as the evening show; the matinee came close to selling out, too. The dinner show sold to capacity with 300 seats reserved months in advance. Before the Oct. 21 dinner, nearly a dozen names had been placed on a list, waiting to be

called for the next show. Attendees of all ages said they like the convenience of having the shows brought to Brevard. SL

Danish horse trainers try new techniques on wild mustangs BY GEORGE WHITE

Horse trainers from Denmark gathered at the non-profit Wild Horse Rescue Center in Mims to film a documentary about the iconic horses being rounded up in the American West by the Bureau of Land Management. Mia Nielsen, Tanya Flodgaard and Thomas Graholy of Kontinent Film stayed in Mims for nearly a month ending Oct. 15 to learn from center president and founder Diane Delano. Nielsen, a horse behavioral therapist and trainer, is training the Mustangs using natural horse behavior techniques she developed to illustrate how wild horses behave, think and communicate. Nielson proved her techniques by bareback riding mustangs just a few weeks after being rounded up for adoption. “It was remarkable watching them. They do everything at liberty, meaning that the horse has no ropes or saddles on them at all. They did everything with nothing on them and that is so different than the American way,’’ Delano said. For the Danish trainers, the mustangs showed special abilities not normally found in domestic animals. “They have a totally natural way of

They are very intuitive, nosey and curious.’’ Nielson said, “We find it’s tremendously important that they’ve been out in the wild because they have all of their instincts intact. Leaving them to adapt and grow in the wild makes for a better horse.’’

The center currently has 17 mustangs rescued initially from roundups in California, Nevada, Wyoming and Utah, according to Delano. “It’s become a worldwide issue. We want an International Mustang academy right here in Mims, open for people from all around the world. So many people have problems with their horses that I think they could really benefit by seeing what we do here,’’ she said.

Space Coast Seafarers provide physical and spiritual respite for cargo and cruise ship personnel When cruise and cargo ships dock at Port Canaveral, ship’s personnel can make new friends, have a hot meal, phone home, email friends and find spiritual direction at the Space Coast Seafarers Ministry. They can even get a ride to the local mall, banks and the space center.

“Most can’t speak English but they look at you and put their hand to their chests to say thank you.” These services are provided by community volunteers from members of Brevard houses of worship and the general public, according to Dan Bailey, Seafarers director and chaplain. Seafarers, located at 8907 N. Atlantic Ave.in Cape Canaveral, operates under the umbrella of the Brevard Baptist Association but welcomes

members and volunteers from all religions. “Seafarers began at another location, by Bill and Emily Richard, in Linda S. Brevard in 1997,” said Humphrey Bailey. “I came onboard in 1999. In 2001, we moved to this location. Our goal is to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those who come here. Our top four countries represented are Peru, India, Indonesia and the Philippines.” On average, 90 volunteers serve more than 15,000 hours annually. Lunch is served daily, five to seven days each week. Seventeen computers are provided along with free Internet, private phones and phone cards are available, mailbox rentals, games, activities and worship services are all part of the daily operations. “They treat us well,” said I Wayan Agus Muradiana. “They welcome people from other countries. I love it.” When I visited Seafarers in October, I was impressed by the gratitude of three young men from Indonesia who were emailing family and friends. A language barrier didn’t hinder them from a display of appreciation. “It’s fascinating to meet so many people from other countries,” said Jeanie Wodka, a weekly volunteer. Mildred Ward visits frequently and serves lunch. “I have several other jobs at my church but I would give them all up to come here,” she said. “Most can’t speak English but they look at you and put their hand to their chests to say thank you.” For information on donating funds or time to Seafarers, call 321-783-0007 or email portministry1@aol.com. Costume designer creates fun and fantasy BY LINDA S. HUMPHREY

When meeting Suzy Moore for the first time, instead of the usual greeting of “hello” or “how are you,” she may shake your hand and ask, “And who would you like to be?” Moore, a design artist who makes costumes for individuals and local productions such as Camelot, The Wizard of Oz and Aladdin, became caught up in the art of making costumes when she was a child. “My sixth-grade history project was my Barbie dolls dressed in historical clothing,” said the Merritt Island resident. “When I was in elementary school someone gave me an old prom dress and I made a princess costume for Halloween.” Moore, who works fulltime as a banquet captain for Crowne Plaza in Indialantic, spends her downtime in her workshop surrounded by mounds of fabric, sequins and trims, along with racks of costumes and props available to the public for purchase or rental. Moore has designed costumes for local cast members of Surfside Players, The Emma Parrish Theater, Cocoa Village Playhouse and Ruth Henegar Center for the Performing Arts. Recently, Moore’s designs were featured in Phantom of the Opera presented by the drama class of University High School in Orlando. Melaney Douglass is a drama teacher at UHS. She directed

ASSOCIATION LIVING

Association Volunteering BY FRANK KNEISER, CMCA, AMS, PCAM

In one of my earlier columns, I wrote about becoming a board member, which of course, is a volunteer position. While it is often difficult for homeowner and condominium associations to find volunteers for the board, it is usually even more challenging to recruit volunteers for committees and projects. If you feel volunteering for the board is not for you, consider volunteering for one of your association’s committees. Associations have a varying number of committees depending on size, type and needs. The association I manage, Suntree, has 10 standing committees and one adhoc committee. The most common committees are architectural control, landscaping and finance. Your association probably has committees that are looking for volunteers and there are several benefits to volunteering. An important reason is to protect and maintain property values within the association. Possibly, you have a certain area of expertise that would be an advantage to your association. Experienced financial people are welcome on the finance committee. Architects, engineers, or builders would be an asset to an architectural control committee. People with landscaping experience or gardening hobbyists are excellent resources for a landscaping committee. Then again, an owner with no specific skill pertaining to a committee may bring a fresh aspect. Often I have seen examples of owners upset or concerned with a particular issue in their association who get involved on a committee to fix it. Then, once they learn the inner workings of the committee, they understand why it operates in the manner it does. They may then go on to become educated in the many areas of association business. There is also the aspect of fulfilling your civic responsibility to your neighbors. You may find other intangible benefits such as meeting new people, making new friends and the sense of accomplishment from your efforts. Check into your association and earn how you can participate. They will be pleased to hear from you. It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his community association manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@suntreeflorida.com. SL

grandparents ROCK !

Keeping in touch with grandchildren BY HOLLY FOX VELLEKOOP

Busy grandparents and grandchildren are often separated by miles, so keeping in touch can be challenging. Write them monthly letters about your life while inquiring about theirs. Include photos, money, newspaper articles, or poems. Personalized handmade cards and stickers on the envelopes are always fun. Texting is easy and grandchildren love it. Put their number in your phone; push “Message” and type on the keyboard. Nimble thumbs help but the unsharpened end of a pencil works. Practice makes perfect. Wrapped packages excite them. Vary the contents to include candy, cookies, clothing or games. Grandchildren enjoy almost anything. Skype if your computer has a built-in camera. Go online, download the free program and register. The grands must do the same on theirs. Click the blue-andwhite “S” icon on your monitor, add the grandchild’s number, and call. Wherever you’re located, you see each other on your monitors and chat. Email and texting can be done day or night and is immediately received. Choose an email account and type away. Some are free, so check around. Flowers or balloons sent to celebrating grandchildren are great. Document stories of your grandparents, parents and siblings. Tell how you and their grampa met and about raising their parent. Dancing grandma rocks

Dear Gramma

BY LINDA WIGGINS

Betty Tarifa has a beautifully framed mantra decorated with pictures of herself in various dance costumes. It reads, “I get up. I walk. I fall down. Meanwhile, I keep dancing.” It’s a way of life she teaches her grandchildren. They love to pile in on her at her Rockledge home, pore through her costumes and jewelry, and play dancing dress-up. “It’s one of our favorite things to do together. There is always music and lots and lots of dancing,” said Tarifa, a resident of Americana Resorts Co-op. She’s the hit of the annual talent show held there each year. Tarifa also takes her show on the road. Boom-box and costume kit in tow, the petite blonde travels to nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and senior centers entertaining with music and dance, no charge. Her favorite performance was one she gave at the request of her grandson. “I wasn’t sure if he was teasing me, but I went ahead and showed up at his school and put on a show for him and his friends,” Tarifa said. “One boy told me I had nice legs. My grandson just smirked and egged them on. I think I showed him.” Tarifa didn’t always dance her way through life. Her mother surprised her as a child with dance lessons, and she danced competitively until she married and had children, then returned to work until near retirement. A terrible setback— one of her daughters was lost at sea, plunged her into a four-year depression. She didn’t want to go on living, and then a friend grabbed her by the shoulders and slapped her across the face. “It woke me up. I decided nothing was going to stand in the way of me living my dreams,” Tarifa said. At 65, she danced her way out of depression and has not

Dear Gramma: My son Eric is in the Army and will be going overseas in the service of his country. I am uncertain if I should tell my elderly mother because it may be too upsetting for her. She and Eric are close and speak to each other regularly. What to do? —Uncertain Mother Dear Uncertain: Your mother deserves to know her grandson’s is going overseas. She will wonder why he isn’t telephoning or stopping by to visit, which will lead to more deception. Imagine her shock if something should happen to Eric while abroad. Further, your mother may want to have a talk with Eric and maybe pray with him (if that is something she does) before he leaves. She may want to give him something special to take along in remembrance. Including your mother in Eric’s future plans will be appreciated by her, reinforcing her trust you. —Gramma SENIOR LIFE Photo

stopped in the 16 years since. “I love my life. I come and go as I please. Men chase me but I don’t stop because I don’t want anyone telling me what to do,” Tarifa said. “I’m going to dance till my last day, and then I’m going to dance on into heaven.” SL

National cemetery possible in Brevard members died, so we can pay our respects,” said Maurice Meisner, immediate past president of the Veterans Memorial Center on Merritt Island. “Many of us are getting older and we need a site here.” The demand is so great that the VMC had to change the name of their memorial gardens, a parklike area intended only for quiet reflection, according to current president, Bill Vagianos. “We had too many people calling to ask if they could be buried there, thinking it was a cemetery,” Vagianos said. Because VMC is on the water, the facility does accept requests for scattering ashes, or cremains. “VMC leaders are standing by to support the next phase of the project should a Brevard site be chosen,” Vagianos said. Brevard County may get its own Arlington National Cemetery-like site soon, with the Veterans Administration currently looking at several sites here and in surrounding coastal communities. “Prospective properties (in Brevard) have been identified and due diligence requirements are underway for top ranked sites,” said Glenn Madderom, chief of Cemetery Development and Improvement Service for the Veterans Adminstration. “We cannot identify sites while the evaluation process is still underway,” said Erika Ruthman, VA public relations specialist. The VA currently has funds in place to acquire property and to begin master planning and other

pre-design activities for a new national cemetery to serve veterans and their families in the central east Florida area, according to Madderom. “Future year construction and operational funding requests were included as part of the Department of Veterans Affairs fiscal year 2012 budget request for Congressional consideration,” Madderon said. The news is welcomed by area veterans, as the closest national cemetery is in Bushnell, in a rural area not convenient to interstate highway travel. Funerals are a high priority in military communities that are prevalent in Brevard, commonly with attendance in the hundreds. Dignitaries and former service buddies travel from all over the globe to pay their respects, generating tourism dollars. “Every day I read the paper to see if one of our

Fisher and Tulley team up to give mall new miracle BY LINDA WIGGINS

Brevard County District 1 Commissioner Robin Fisher, Mayor Jim Tulley and other Titusville leaders inched forward on a plan for the Space Coast Economic Development Commission (SEDC) to coordinate the purchase of Miracle City Mall for $5.5 million, contingent on securing public and private investors for redevelopment by Nov. 30. “We realize time is of the essence.” Fisher said. “It’s the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning and the last thing I think about before I go to sleep at night.” The Titusville City Commission approved investing $10,000 toward the Greater Titusville Renaissance on Oct. 26. The commission will hold a strategic planning meeting in January specifically

on the Miracle City Mall project. In August, Fisher paid his own way to attend the International Council of Shopping Centers with SEDC Director Matt Chesnut. Fisher said he spoke with many developers and narrowed down the field to a few serious contenders who could see the potential and grasp the passionate mission of the economic renaissance. MBA Development Partners has shown interest in the purchase. The real estate, acquisition and investment firm has 25-plus years of real estate experience, and more than $2 billion of developed retail, residential and commercial projects. With successful national and international business experience, owner Eric Collazo has worked in the most challenging of development environments.

Collazo visited Titusville numerous times to meet with Fisher and Tulley, touring the site, meeting potential partners and community leaders, and discussing a potential investment. In the meantime, the duo has been diligent in bringing together local partners to continue negotiations. Potential tenants such as JC Penney, Darden Restaurants, and Parrish Medical Center—which is considering placing medical offices on a portion of the mall site— are all potential partners in the plan. “We have the attention of some national players. This deal would have a huge economic impact on the Titusville market, as well creating new SENIOR LIFE Photo jobs,” Fisher said. Art festival paints downtown Eau Gallie this November BY ANGELA SMITH

When Dennis Shattuchk paints, he normally doesn’t have a live audience and typically isn’t outside. If only for a weekend, the skilled painter and former member of the Art Gallery of Viera, whose works have shipped throughout the U.S. and internationally, will set up shop along the downtown Eau Gallie sidewalk on Nov. 19 and 20. Shattuchk will be one of 85 artists to align the streets for the 15th annual Artworks Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival. Link Johnston founded the event designed to showcase local artists doing their work en plein air, from the French for in the open air, as all of the artists in the show will paint outdoors. “It’s one of the first fine arts shows in the fall and it’s nearby and it always turns out to be better than expected,” Shattuchk said. “You kind of always learn from the audience as you can get asked a lot of interesting questions, but it’s also a good way to promote art lessons and let people know what your art style is as they examine your work.” This year Shattuchk plans to get the crowd buzzing as he plans to be more unusual with his pieces. “It’s great to try out,” he said. “You have thousands of people to see what you’re doing and you’ll see how they’ll react to it.” Throughout the two-day festival, folks will have a chance to see art in all shapes and forms — from painting and photography to glass, jewelry, oils, watercolors, metal and ceramic

health & wellness Confused about options Dear Lynne: I just received information about my health benefits from the company where I worked before retirement. While the benefits are excellent, my wife and I just cannot afford the monthly premium anymore. What options do we have if we drop this coverage? —Confused About Options Dear Confused: Please note that once you decide to drop your retirement health benefits, you will not be able to go back to them ever again. For this reason, you and your wife need to thoroughly research any decision you might make to change from your present coverage. If you are not retired military, eligible for Tricare for Life, your options include either a Medicare advantage plan (MA) or original Medicare. With an MA plan, you would probably be limited to using a network of providers in addition to co-pays whenever you see a doctor or enter the hospital, etc. However, there are some plans that allow you to go out of network with higher co-pay. It’s important to review what these charges are so there aren’t any surprises should you need a test, or be hospitalized, etc. The plans also may include a prescription drug plan (PDP). Check to see if your medications are included in the plan formulary, what your co-payments would be and if or when you would enter the gap. When in the gap, you are responsible for 50% of the cost of your drugs in 2012. Another important question is whether or not you can continue using the same doctors you have been using. Some of these plans also have no monthly premium and some also will pay all or part of your Part B premium. Original Medicare is sometimes called fee-forservice Medicare. If you use this option, you can go to any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare patients. You usually pay a deductible and part of

the cost of the services you reAsk Lynne ceive. Medicare determines how Lynne Meagher much health care providers SHINE can charge for the services covered by the plan. If you are in original Medicare, you would also need to join a prescription drug plan (PDP) to get drug coverage through Medicare. Additionally, with original Medicare you have the option to enroll in a Medicare supplement (Medigap) plan. Medigap insurance allows you the freedom to use any provider you want in the United States and its territories. Depending on which of the 10 standardized plans you might choose, you would have no additional co-payments. In Florida, these plans are age-rated. This means your premium would be based on your age when you first enroll in the plan. Also, there would be a medical questionnaire, as well as a waiting period for pre-existing conditions, if there is a gap in coverage. The Medigap plans do not include prescription coverage so you would need to pick a prescription drug plan, too. SHINE counselors, like Lynne, have received in-depth training so they can provide unbiased assistance as you make this important decision; a decision that will affect all your health care expenses for 2012 and beyond. A SHINE counselor will not tell you what you should do, but will guide you through the comparison process so you can make an educated choice. Call the Elder Helpline 800-963-5337 in Cocoa to contact a SHINE counselor to get an immediate answer about your Medicare or other health insurance coverage, or for information about volunteering with SHINE. Mended Hearts, there’s a chapter near you BY MARTHA MASIELLO

Mended Hearts is a national organization offering hope to heart disease patients, their families and caregivers. For more than 60 years the group has provided support meetings, educational forums and visiting programs. Heart patients are given inspiration, with the promise of a positive patient-care experience. Members draw upon their own personal experiences to help others understand that there can be a rich, rewarding life after heart disease. Through their tireless efforts, heart patients learn about lifestyle changes, depression, recovery and treatment. Volunteers visit patients, family members and caregivers online, by phone and in hospitals. Ron Penn, 18-year member and editor of Happy Hearts newsletter for Cocoa Beach Chapter 244, said “Our meetings start at noon the second Saturday of each month at Cape Canaveral Hospital Medical Plaza.” The group meets for an informal session in room B and the actual meeting begins at 1:15 p.m. For further information on the Cocoa Beach chapter, call Penn at 321-452-5592 or email koalacon@cfl.rr.com. Uve Laufenberg, from Melbourne Chapter 264, said, “Our 64-member chapter meets at 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne on the second

Retiree trades in title as Shuttle technician for that of The Scrub Man BY LINDA S. HUMPHREY

Titusville resident Richard Price knew his job as a system and project engineer with the United Space Alliance was about to end earlier this year with the final space shuttle launch. He felt he was too young to actually retire and wanted to give something back to his community. Price, who says the closest thing in his life to being in the world of retail was delivering flowers when he was in college, purchased a business in July and today has a new title— The Scrub Man. Now, one of his main concerns is what the hot new colors are for fall. The opportunity to purchase the existing medical scrubs business on Garden Street from the original owners allowed Price to remain in Titusville and keep a much-needed SENIOR LIFE Linda Humphrey service available in the North Customer Greg Taylor, LPN, is assisted by Richard Price, new owner of The Brevard area. Scrub Man on Garden Street in Titusville on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011. “My wife and the former owners agree that sometimes you just have to According to Price, he has a large are friends and we learned of their be ready for a new experience even if number of medical students who are plans to sell the business. NOVEMBER FISHING FORECAST

Target Redfish and seatrout Eric Ciocher with a Sebastian Inlet door mat flounder. SENIOR LIFE Photo

BY ERIC CIOCHER

Inshore In the Banana and Indian River lagoons, watch for the water temps to cool down. This should be a good time to target redfish and seatrout in theFlats and the bite should be consistent all day long. I recommendusing live shrimp and gold spoonsfor these cruising flats predators. Offshore The 8AReef and some othersshould start producing snapper, grouper and kingfish. A productive bait for the reef fish will be frozen sardines. Surf In November,anglers should seebetter catches offlounder as the annual flounder run kicks off, along the beaches and inlets. The best bait for these flat fish are small finger mullet fished on the bottom of the inlet. Another alternative would be to cast a smalljig tipped with a piece of shrimp and work it slowly on the bottom. Freshwater The water levels are back up in the St. Johns River andthe speck fishing should turn on as the first cold frontsreturn to the Space Coast. See you on the water! Capt Eric

If you can spare a few hours each week, the staff and the homeless animals at the North Animal Care Center in Titusville would greatly appreciate your help. Volunteers are needed for simple tasks such as filling new litter boxes, washing pet food dishes and walking dogs. Of course, there is always time for just being a friend, offering a pat or kind word to a lonely critter, according to Jill Mollohan, the coordinator for volunteers with Brevard Animal Services. “When you are a dedicated volunteer, you ealize it doesn’t matter if you are working directly with the animals or helping the staff with cleaning and other chores, it all comes down to helping the animals,” said Mollohan, a former volunteer. “It is the most fulfilling work I have ever done.” Cocoa resident Wendy Herkenratt has been volunteering at the Titusville center since June. Herkenratt is a college student who formerly assisted in the adoption of children. Now, she hopefully watches the homeless pets at the center as they await adoption. “This is my first time as a volunteer at an animal shelter,” said Herkenratt. “I love animals which is proven by the fact that I have adopted two dogs just since June! I brought one home the first day I was there. His name is Ollie. Then I brought Bodhi home.” Herkenratt said that since her summer classes have all been online she has been trying to give about 20 hours per week to the shelter but realizes that when school begins she will only have Saturdays to serve.

Paula Hunter, kennel supervisor at the Brevard County North Animal Care Center in Titusville, Fla. and volunteer Wendy Herkenratt show off a cat and a dog awaiting adoption on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011. “A few hours of time is so valuable to the animals,” Herkenratt said. “They don’t have voices to ask for themselves. They just want love.” Mollohan said when a community comes together to support something like homeless animals, anything is possible. “That is why we are working hard to get the community involved at our county shelters, we need to pull our community together and work at saving more animals and work towards our ‘no-kill’ goal.I’ve seen it happen in another location and I know it can happen in Brevard County.” To volunteer at any of the animal centers, call Mollohan at 321-255-4379. Expanded V.A. Clinic has it all BY LINDA WIGGINS

The Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic in Viera has opened its expanded services, which include specialty clinics like optometry, cardiology, ear nose and throat and much more. “They’ve got everything now,” said veteran Ron Howard of Suntree. The new 30,000-square-foot clinic space is home to Saturn Team, which includes prosthetics and physical therapy to meet the needs of injured veterans returning from deployment. Saturn Team moved into the new space from the main clinic, allowing the primary care, mental health, health care for homeless veterans, compensation and pension departments to expand into the vacated space. The expansion has allowed the team to provide services that are more efficient to 450 veterans per day, according to V.A. spokesperson Courtney Franchio. The clinic now has 210 exam rooms, up from the original 130. This allows doctors and other health professionals to go from patient to patient, rather than having to shuttle patients from room to room. The VA Clinic, located on Veterans Way, just off Stadium Parkway in Viera, already had legions of fans.

“It’s phenomenal, I was treated there three times. I was so impressed with their level of care, I decided to start volunteering,” said Howard, an injured veteran who served from 1968 to 1971 in the Marines. Howard has served in many volunteer posts and now works Wednesday mornings in the physical therapy department, preparing heat packs, helping move patients, and doing whatever it takes to offer comfort. “I talk to a lot of friends from throughout the United States and you hear horror stories from all over about medical clinics for veterans,” Howard said. “Our clinic has the most caring people in the V.A. system. They’ll bend over backwards to help you. One doctor called me on a Sunday to ask me about my medications. Where are you going to find a doctor like that?” The V.A. Clinic has become a popular spot for volunteers, many are veterans like Howard. “I go there because it’s fun, but also because I want to help other veterans,” Howard said. “Plus, they laugh at my jokes, and you just can’t beat that.” For more information, call the clinic at 321-637-3788. Book Review REVIEWED BY CHIFFONE SANDBERG

Puller’s Runner Authors: Nick Ragland and Joe Rouse Published by Hamilton Books ISBN: 978-0-7618-4607-9 Copyright 2009 $19.95 Paperback Pages: 177 Historical Fiction

Nick Ragland served in the Marines in Vietnam as a platoon leader and later as a supply officer. He graduated from Georgetown University in 1966 and is currently the chairman of Gorilla Glue Company. Joseph Rouse graduated from Miami of Ohio in 1996 and received his MA in English from the University of Cincinnati. He teaches high school English. This is historical fiction about one of the most colorful and the most decorated U.S. Marine in history. Lieutenant General Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller began his career as an enlisted man who took great pride in leading from the front. He had a booming voice and a crusty manner. Chesty expected the max from his troops and asked nothing that he would not be willing to do himself. Puller’s Runner is told through the view of a fictional character, Michael Abbo, an average, young American, prior to the bombing at Pearl Harbor. He struggled to adapt to strict discipline and rigorous training in the Marines when he was assigned to be a runner for Puller. He hadn’t seen anything until he was exposed to the harsh training methods under Chesty’s command. Michael returned to civilian life to finish college after WWII. He was called up from the reserves to serve in the Korean War and once again assigned to Puller. The chapters cover theaters of war from the heat of the Guadalcanal to the frigid Chosin Reservoir. Puller’s Runner is a tale of valor, discipline, courage and bravery. It covers Puller’s service to his country, his forced retirement and his death. Personal Opinion: Well worth reading, especially for military history buffs. The writers’ attention to detail is remarkable. The story is so well told, readers feel they are there with the runner receiving brief instructions and sent out into the jungle darkness to deliver the messages. SL
