Space Coast leaders offer advice to graduating seniors

T

BY ERNEST ARICO

his month, thousands of high school seniors across Brevard County will don caps and gowns and proudly walk across a stage to receive their high school diplomas. If your son or daughter is graduating from high school this year, you’ll know how bittersweet this milestone is. All the sacrifices you made through the years — driving your kids back and forth to school, athletic practices and games, clubs, band, theater. You name it. You did it all. But what about advice for your children going to college? How about the military? What if he or she decides to join the workforce? What

Bob Cabana, Kennedy Space Center director “My advice to the seniors graduating this year is to work hard and do your best at whatever is asked of you and never turn down an opportunity to do something new and expand your horizons. It’s important to have a goal for yourself. For most of you, that’s getting into college and graduating. I would encourage all of you to find out what motivates you, where your passion lies and pursue your dreams; not giving up if you don’t achieve them on the first try. Most things worth doing in this life are challenging and require perseverance and hard work to achieve them. Don’t be discouraged if you’re not successful right away, keep trying. I would encourage all of you to act with integrity. It’s something that seems to be on the decline today. Folks can pretty much say whatever they want without being held accountable. How much brighter you will shine above the rest if you hold tight to your integrity. I’ve been blessed to have an amazing career and have been privileged to see our beautiful, blue, jewel of a planet from the vantage of space, but it required hard work and persistence. I didn’t get into flight training, test pilot school or the astronaut program on the first try. But, I tried again and was fortunate enough to be selected.”

BY FAYE EICHHOLZE FOR ANDREA Nearly a year since we began our dance. Out-of-step, not knowing when to lead or how to follow. With stiff, wobbly legs, I fear your agile, sure-footedness. I stepped forward; you stepped back. I stepped aside a short distance, for a short time. Then, slowly, haltingly, we moved in rhythm Only to lose the beat once more. Womb-children and womb-mothers, dead and alive, shadowed our movements, threatened to cut in, tempted us to change partners. We made mis-steps. Then the tempo changed; Lively and joyous, the dance quickened ’Til our feet flew. The music faded, the dance ended. Stepwise now, we paused to rest. The music begins again. Will you dance with me?

County board wants FDOT to review one-way golf cart traffic BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL Brevard County Commissioners, by a vote of 3-2, will ask the Florida Department of Transportation to approve or reject a plan to allow a one-way path for golf carts to travel over the

Viera Boulevard-Interstate 95 diverging diamond interchange. During the April 9 County Commissioners meeting, several residents addressed the board about allowing golf carts to drive over the interchange. Golfers, seniors and some

high school students want to use golf carts to travel east and west along Viera Boulevard. Some county commissioners explained that the FDOT might allow for golf cart usage of a diverging diamond bridge, provided that the

bridge meets minimum requirements provided by the FDOT. However, the diamond in Viera does not meet the requirements. One of the proposals is to allow golf carts to cross the bridge in one-way-only paths, rather than two-way paths. According to county officials, the bridge would have to be modified to have a designated golf cart path across the bridge. The costs for any construction to be added to the current bridge was absolutely refused, on the grounds that it would be prohibitively expensive. The only option would be to first have the FDOT approve the idea of a one-way path, and then to bring the matter back before the County Commissioners in order to assess how to manage the one-way. While some of the commissioners were in favor of the one-way, the feeling was not unanimous. “I have a lot of hesitations with this,” said District 1 Commissioner Rita Pritchett. “Brevard County

is not authorized to permit the use of golf carts to the (interchange), this really isn’t even our road. (If) someone … gets hurt, we’re opening up a situation I’m not real comfortable with.” One of the major concerns for safety is the possibility of a collision with a golf cart and a vehicle. “It’s a sorry situation when you’re having golf carts driven by 14-year-old kids that don’t know the rules of the road,” said District 4 Commissioner Curt Smith. “We can all imagine the horror that can occur if one of these kids (or an adult were to be) injured, or far worse, killed. “If we can get it golf cart friendly and accessible, I'm all in favor of it.” District 5 Commissioner Kristine Isnardi agreed. “I know that your commissioner is working hard on your behalf, (but) I have just seen too many wild drivers,” Isnardi said. “I'm not comfortable with the

words of wisdom do our graduates need to hear that will influence and encourage them to make the most of and get the most out of the next phase of their lives? There are many words of wisdom that are available for parents to give to their children. To help out, the Viera Voice asked some of Brevard’s top professionals, business and community leaders for some words of wisdom they would pass along to this year’s graduating seniors. VV

Todd J. Pokrywa, president of The Viera Company “Congratulations graduating seniors on reaching this significant milestone. You are about to embark upon significant change and your circle of friends will change, but embrace it and all of the new experiences that become available to you. There is an entire world of possibilities out there and, in pursuing them, forging new relationships will be vital to your success. Be committed to meeting as many people as possible and fostering relationships in every experience as you never know where it will lead. As National Hockey League Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky once said, ‘You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.’ ’’

Rev. John Britto Antony, pastor at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Viera “One of the fundamental characteristics of realizing one’s self is to know that our life is not about us. It is about God and about serving his purposes and others. To do that, we need to believe that God loves us and that he has a purpose for our life, and that purpose is to be the better version of ourselves. As you launch out into the wide world, you have immense potential either to tarnish your image or to shine light on your best self. Every decision, small and big, you make every day of your life will have consequences and the undeniable power in shaping who you are meant to be or take you away from becoming one. Our world is in the brinks of becoming self-absorbed, selfish, destructive and insensitive to the common good without the moorings of morals in life. You can salvage the situation if you know you have a unique part to play in making the world a better place to be. St. Catherine of Siena said it well: ‘Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.’ “

Carol Craig, founder and CEO of Craig Technologies “My number one advice to young ladies graduating from high school would be to embrace the uncertainties of life and be confident that you will figure things out as you go along. Recognize that those alongside of you are experiencing the same feelings and although they may appear on the outside to have a solid handle on their future, they likely do not. Be unafraid to accept the fact that you may not have any idea what you are doing but recognize that sometimes the beauty of life is figuring out your way forward organically. Sometimes you will just have to make the stuff up as you go. Take new opportunities as they present themselves — be flexible and adaptable because you never know what may come along and change the trajectory of your life. Take all kinds of classes and not just what is required for your major — you will eventually realize where your true passion lies. Do not allow others to tell you what you can and cannot do — especially based on gender. Take advantage of all the great qualities that women possess to succeed, excel and be great no matter where life takes you and who it puts you up against. Don’t worry about failure. Worry about the chances you miss because you didn’t even try. Challenge yourself to try something new — something you couldn’t have done in high school. If you are not terrified or at least slightly anxious about what you are doing, you might not have reached high enough. And as you navigate your way through all the unknowns and exciting opportunities, remember to show respect to everyone regardless of whether or not they deserve it — not as a reflection of their character, but as a reflection of yours. Lastly, in the words of Ray Bradbury: ‘Sometimes you just have to jump; and build your wings on the way down.’ “

Dr. Mark Mullins, Brevard County schools superintendent “Each of us have at least three assets or what I call treasures — time, talent and treatment of others. I challenge you to live your life with the following in mind — be wise, be generous and be a blessing with the treasures that only you control. If you use your treasures within the guidelines of being wise, being generous and being a blessing — you won’t go wrong! Two final things, as you enter this next chapter in life, establish the life practice of always having a mentor. Find someone who will challenge you and hold you accountable to the virtues mentioned previously. Second, be a mentor to someone else to help him/her be their best selves. I believe by committing to these few things, we make the world a bit better for everyone.”

Viera Wetlands Nature Festival draws happy crowd BY CHRIS BONANNO Hundreds flocked to the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands in Viera on April 13 and 14 for the 10th annual Viera Wetlands Nature Festival. Patrons who visited the wetlands were able to see a host of animals, including alligators, turtles and a variety of birds in what can best be described as a relaxing atmosphere at the facility, which is located off the west end of Wickham Road. The event attracted those who are familiar with the sprawling and picturesque grounds. “We like to come out to the Viera Wetlands on a frequent basis to check out all the different birds and animals,“ said Bert Alm of Viera who was with his wife Val, who described the pair as “bird nerds.” It also drew first-time visitors, as well, such as Ken and Susan Nader of Viera. “There’s a lot of beautiful wildlife, beautiful birds. There’s many, many good sized alligators out here,” Ken Nader said. “... When you put it all together, you enjoy the scenery and you

meet people along the way. You have a chit-chat. … God created this whole thing and it’s beautiful.” In addition to the natural scenery, a Flight of the Raptor show featuring a falcon was performed and a number of vendors also were on hand. “It’s a tremendous gem, if you will, for the community,’’ said Laurie Widzgowski, the marketing and event coordinator for The Viera Company and Viera Community Institute. “So I think having a festival like this every year, and this is the 10th year for the festival, it’s just so important to let them come out and see if they’re not

familiar with it. And you know, bring the kids out at a young age and acclimate them to these things and all the exhibitors are bringing. It just has been phenomenal.’’ Also, as part of the event, the Viera Voice announced the winners of the Charlie Corbeil Youth Contest. Children created art, photography and writing relative to the contest’s theme of the “Beauty of Wild Florida.” “Who knows? If you get one out of 100 (children interested in nature) that’s great, that really becomes interested, I think,” said Charlotte Corbeil, Charlie’s widow.

have a proper parking area instead of what we have now. I have a very active volunteer group, but they operate out of their own vehicles. We would love to be able to have sort of a ranger station and a welcome facility for them. So, that’s the plan.” The plan, which Berry said had been in the works for years, was introduced at a dinner function on April 13, following Day 1 of the Viera Wetlands Nature Festival. At least part of the impetus for the plan, Berry said, stems from the fact that the facility was not constructed to handle the traffic that visits

each day. “We never expected when the system was designed to have the popularity that we see,’’ Berry said. “The roads that you see, for example, were designed to handle one or two trucks a day from the treatment plant. “They weren’t designed for 200,000 vehicles a year, so that takes its toll and we need to be able to address that problem.” Berry, who said he’s been with Brevard County Natural

Improvements soon could be coming to the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands property. Raleigh Berry, a senior environmental scientist for Brevard County Natural Resources Management, is proposing additions and refurbishments that would cost an estimated $750,000, according to Berry. “We want to harden some of the roads, and we want to take some of the roads and devote them exclusively to pedestrians and bicyclists,’’ Berry said. “We also want to

Resources Management for a little less than 15 years, noted that the public will have to support the project financially. “I would expect, given the nature of the site, because it’s a sewage treatment wetland, it’s not a conservation area. It’s not a park. It’s not a wilderness reserve, so the branch opportunities are few and far between for a location like that. So, I expect that we will have to rely on public donations and sponsorships.” Laurie Widzgowski, the marketing and event

coordinator for The Viera Company and the Viera Community Institute, noted that the project has the full support of those organizations. “We’ll support Raleigh and his fundraising efforts as much as we can,’’ Widzgowski said. “We’re hoping that this event this evening will be the stepping stone for that in getting the committee organized to get the right people involved to get the funds into doing the enhancements that are needed.’’ VV

Gianchandani, Valdes win Space Coast Amateur titles BY CARL KOTALA

This year’s Space Coast Amateur Championship at the Duran Golf Club had it all. While Ami Gianchandani of New Jersey successfully defended her women’s championship, the men’s title went to a two-hole playoff that saw Brendan Valdes of Orlando prevail against Jeff Mocini of Melbourne to claim the title. “I hit the ball great,” Valdes said in a press release. “I hit the driver especially well all event which put me in great position, especially on the playoff holes.” Valdes, who has committed to play at Auburn University, shot 1-under par in regulation during the two-day event held during the end of March. That put him in a tie with Mocini to force the playoff. Defending champion, and

The winners of this year’s games will meet in 2020. This will mark the second consecutive year the annual event has been held at the USSSA Space Coast Complex. Phillips steps down, Moreno steps in as Holy Trinity boys soccer coach BY CARL KOTALA

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Holy Trinity athletic director James Phillips, left, poses with new varsity boys soccer coach Adrian Moreno. Phillips stepped down after 13 seasons as the Tigers head coach. Moreno is a Holy Trinity alumnus.

Save the Date! 1

Ten years ago, Adrian Moreno kicked his last soccer ball in high school while wearing a Holy Trinity jersey. Now, the 28-year-old is set to become the Tigers varsity boys soccer head coach. James Phillips, who led the Tigers program for 13 seasons, is stepping down after spending the past year as both the boys soccer coach and the school’s athletic director. “With this new job, it was more of a time thing more than anything else,” Phillips said. “I just didn’t have the time, I felt, to dedicate fully to program. It needs a fully dedicated coach. It was just too much.” The 42-year-old Phillips led the Tigers to nine district championships and one regional title — and therefore

a spot in the state final four — as Holy Trinity’s head coach. Moreno, who would go on to play at UCF, was a sophomore striker at Holy Trinity when Phillips took over the program and was part of the first district championship team. He came back to Holy Trinity as a graduate assistant five years ago and coached the JV team. He was the assistant coach to Phillips this past season as Holy Trinity reached the regional semifinals. “He knows the program so well. He knows the tradition of the program,” Phillips said of Moreno. “He was an easy choice to fill the shoes.” Moreno never thought he would be returning to his old high school, let alone to take over for Phillips, but is glad for the opportunity. “I’ve loved soccer all my

life,” he said. “(Phillips) gave me so much, I wanted to give back.” To that end, Moreno has set a broad range of areas he would like to help the Tigers improve on, and they’re not all about just playing soccer. “My goal here is not just to make the kids better soccer players on the field,” he said. “It’s also to instill the work ethic that they have on the field and apply it to other things in their life. “The things that (Phillips) taught me are about work and attitude and putting everything you can (into what you do). I want these kids to take those skills and use them when they go to college, use it for their studies and when they go into the job field. “If you use that hard work ethic, the traits you get from a coach, you can achieve great things.” VV

Golfers just want to have fun BY DARRELL WOEHLER Everyone wants to have fun at Duran Golf Club. That’s the word that comes up the most when talking to Duran Golf Club management, league sponsors, Duran Men’s Golf Association members (DMGA) and Duran Women’s Golf Association members (DWGA). If the weather cooperates, fun is exactly what they have at Duran. The dreaded R word, rain, postponed the final event of the season from the end of March to the beginning of April. The sun always eventually comes out at the 7,151-yard, par-72 layout at Duran Golf Club. It is located at 7032 Stadium Parkway in Viera. According to Duran Golf Club General Manager David Tomczak, “the golf course opened in 2005 and the men’s and women’s leagues started in 2009.” David Grant, 73, has been a member of DMGA since the

beginning. The group has nearly 100 members today. “I practically live on the course,’’ Grant said. “Well, in a home in a subdivision next to the course.” He says that he plays a lot. “The league was initially called the Heritage Isle Golf Association because so many of the early players transferred from Heritage Isle,’’ Grant said. Like many Floridians, Grant came down from up north — via New York and then Virginia. He said that he and his wife enjoy “the weather, of course, the diversity of the people here, fishing, running and doing various volunteer work and also helping with animal services.” Grant also is a Citizens Observers Patrol member for the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. “I greatly admire Duda and Sons for their vision in not only the golf course but for the entire (Viera) idea.”

Jill Blue, owner of the Bluewater Creative Group, which publishes the Viera Voice, Senior Life and Boomer Guide, purchased the Art Gallery of Viera from artists Jeanette Drake and Helen Wheatley on April 12, 2019. The Art Gallery of Viera, which has been closed since Dec. 31, 2018 after displaying and selling high-quality art for almost a decade. The gallery had been located for the last 7 years in The Avenue Viera where it hosted the artwork of several wellknown and award-winning local artists. Prior to that, it had a home in a shopping center near the intersection of Murrell Rd. and Viera Blvd. “I believe the art gallery belongs in Viera for art lovers to enjoy, Blue said. “My team will work hard to bring back and continue to support the emerging and established artists in the community in the new gallery. They are currently looking for the perfect location in Viera to reopen the business. They plan on bringing the community a beautiful gallery, art shows, classes, opening receptions and exhibitions. The gallery will feature the Charlie Corbeil Youth Art Contest each April and other youth events.

Brevard Children's Business Fair promotes entrepreneurial spirit BY JILL BLUE Children were the boss at the one-day Brevard Children’s Business Fair where kids were the sole proprietor. Participants were given the opportunity to launch their own start-up businesses. The March 30 event was held at The Avenue Viera. The various businesses promoted skills such as paddling instruction, writing and sketching comic books, slime making, and various forms of art and painting. These young entrepreneurs could become the next successful business leaders. Some of the items already are available online or in local shops. Holy Trinity wins prestigious State Latin Forum BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL Studying classical languages such as Latin and Greek has long been standard for students seeking higher education. Today, these languages have seen a decline in elementary and high schools. That’s not the case at some schools, where students are learning and thriving in both Latin and Greek. The 70th annual State Latin Forum of the Florida Junior Classical League (FJCL) was held April 5 and 6 at the Wyndham Orlando Resort and Convention Center. Schools from around the state came together to celebrate Latin and Greek and to compete in a variety of challenges throughout the event. Among the 48 schools in attendance, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy was guided by teachers Adam Mize and Silvana Wilbur; Timothy O’Flaherty led West

Shore Junior/Senior High School; and Anna Glenn guided Edgewood Junior/ Senior High School. At the conclusion of the Forum, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy (HTEA) finished in first place overall. Five students received special recognition and three others won Best of Show, the highest overall score of any student at the Forum. The five special recognition winners were: • Amelia DeVries • Fefe Montalvo • William Graham • Jackson Riggs • Charlotte Varnes The three Best in Show winners were: • Mia Garvey in Roman Customs • Colin McLaughlin in Classical Geography • Charlotte Varnes in Greek Derivatives One of the most difficult and exciting competitions within the FJCL is the Certamen, a test of speed

and skill in which students are placed on teams and are asked a variety of questions. Students must be the fastest to press a buzzer and provide a timed answer. The questions in the Certamina (the plural of Certamen, a Latin neuter noun of the third declension, which means a struggle) range from obscure grammar to classical mythology. “This particular team

developed a strong bond during practice and really encouraged each other to practice and study,” said Mize, who teaches classics at Holy Trinity. “They practiced in my room dozens of times before the State Forum and they were self-motivated. So, I didn't have to twist their arms to practice. Certamen, obviously, involves knowledge, but frequent practice helps you

react quickly and predict questions. Some teams just have a good rapport and they're better because of it. All the kids on that team are really close now.” Mize worked alongside Wilbur, a fellow instructor at Holy Trinity, to prepare the students for the FJCL. With the victory, some Holy Trinity students will compete in the national competition at North Dakota State University. “Some of our students will prepare for Nationals now and much of that will happen over the summer,” Mize said. “Some will practice Latin speeches, take practice tests, read study books, etc. “I've been attending the State Forum for over 20 years, 12 as a teacher, and this is the first time I've ever come in first place. So, it meant a great deal,” Mize added. “My students worked really hard this year and I'm proud of how they studied and came together as a team.” VV

Viera repeats first-place finish at Florida State Spanish Conference BY CARL KOTALA They didn’t just defend their first-place finish. Sixteen members of Viera High’s Spanish team left their mark on the program for future Hawks to follow. Proving that, yes, they are that good, Viera’s Spanish team once again won the 8A/9A division of Category A at the Florida State Spanish Conference held in Orlando. “I think we just wanted to prove ourselves for the second year in a row,” Viera’s Ophelie Jacobson said. “Last year, we won and we were all really excited. It’s our senior year. We wanted to leave that legacy behind.” The competition featured a number of different categories. Each of the 16 team members had to give an impromptu speech on a specific topic. Students also had the chance to read a poem, perform in a play or even take part in a Spanish dance. “How it’s set up, it’s very individualized, so you want to do as well as you can by yourself,” senior Sam Thomas said. “Cumulatively, if we have a team of very good individuals, then the team will be good.” Thomas, for his part, delivered the opening monologue in the play and also took part in a saxophone duet. Jacobson recited a poem by Julia de Burgos for two minutes while dressed in full costume. Senior Manuela Correa was the main character in the play,

which was by Federico Garcia Lorca. “It was about puppets,” Correa said. “It was about a girl … she wants to get married to the guy she’s in love with, but her dad doesn’t let her because they need money and the guy she wants is poor.” Dalton Cravens joked about his part in the play. “I was the father,” he said. “I got to be very angry.” To be in Category A, teams must have students who are learning Spanish in school. In Viera’s case, a number of students are taking Spanish literature, and that’s what their impromptu questions were geared toward. The students received a list of 16 possible questions at the beginning of the year. When they got to the competition, there were notecards flipped upside down on a table. Three cards were picked and the students chose the one question they thought they could answer best in front of the judges. “For us, being in Spanish Lit, a lot of the cards will be based around literature topics, asking about specific books we read,” Cravens said. “In that way, it’s almost good practice for Spanish Lit. They basically ask you what could be essay questions on the exam.” Eliana Peterson, who is the school’s World Languages Department Chair along with being a Spanish 3, 4, AP Language and Literature teacher and the Spanish Honor Society sponsor, was impressed with her student’s

performance and their dedication. “They really did a good job,” she said. “They were amazing.” In addition to Correa, Jacobson, Thomas and Cravens, other Viera students who took part in the competition were Louis Deal, Brooke Drier, Estefania Esparza, Kassandra Ferrer, Sourjya Ghatak, Colleen Gilbride, Andrew Jackson, Sofia Kirk, Antonio Romeu, Jordan Spira, Alanis Colon Perez and Nathalie Burgos. The event could become a Correa family tradition. “I told my sister … she’s younger and she’s coming to high school in a couple of years … I told her the Spanish competition is one of the best memories I’ve had from school,” Correa said. “I told her to definitely do that if she wants to.” VV

Student’s spring break fundraiser helps out area animal shelter BY JULIE STURGEON

During spring break, 10-year-old Gigi Ross’s mom, Michele Ross, had big plans for a fun-filled week in the Florida Keys for her daughter. Then, her mom broke her ankle and the plans had to be canceled. With a week of vacation ahead of her, Gigi Ross wanted to make good use of her time. After talking to her mom, she decided to have a bake sale and use the money for a charity. “My daughter Gigi is passionate about animals, so she decided to use the animal rescue HALO in Sebastian as her charity, Ross said. “She did her own research and decided she wanted to help out a no-kill animal shelter that relies on donations. Gigi’s friend Cecelia

Holy Trinity students stand out in national math competition BY CARL KOTALA Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy’s two math modeling teams recently received honorable mentions in the nationwide MathWorks Math Modeling competition in which students are asked to use mathematics to evaluate real world problems. Of 877 teams nationwide, only 28 teams were recognized. Two were from Holy Trinity. Only one other school in the United States earned this distinction. “This isn’t a math competition in which a team would compete half-heartedly. Only the best students from the best schools across the country compete,” said Trevor Herntier, who teaches the school’s math modeling class and is a team advisor. “Statistically, a student is more likely to

In addition to her secondplace finish, Francom was one of just two competitors to take home the NOAA’s Taking the Pulse of the Planet Award. “State competition brings the best of the best from their local regions,” Youngs said. “Viera took eight projects to the state science fair … to me, it was a successful year for my students.” All of the contestant’s projects were unique. “My project was tracking the probability of a mass shooting in every county in the United States,” Jones said. “Mother Jones has different reports about mass shootings and where they’ve happened. I’ve also gotten characteristics from the FBI that they’ve released on mass shooters. “I broke that up into subcategories and found the probability through that.”

Albert and Allaire teamed up to work on a project based off of NASA’s Robotic Refueling Mission 3, which has to do with the transferring of cryogenic fuel in microgravity. “We decided to automate a fluid transfer system on earth to show that robotics could effectively perform the same tasks as astronauts right now,” Albert said. Just how did they do that? “We programmed a robot to carry a certain amount of … we used water in a gravity-based system on earth because you can’t use cryogenic liquid in zero gravity down here,” Allaire said. “The robot was programmed to go to a container and transfer the liquid. Then we would physically move the robot and pick it up to receive the liquid back. Then we would test the percentage that was lost, either through spilling, evaporation or getting stuck in the container to test the efficiency of it.”

Francom’s project was called “Microplastics Spoiling Spoil Islands of the Indian River Lagoon.” “I took samples from the Indian River Lagoon Estuary and I filtered them and counted for microplastics,” she said. “Specifically, in the Banana River, there are three spoil islands. I collected samples near vegetative areas and near sandy areas. “What I wanted to research was if microplastics would congregate more near vegetative areas versus sandy areas and I actually found that there were more microplastics near vegetative areas.” The effect of plastics on the environment has always been an important topic to Francom, who started competing in science fairs in the third grade. “I think what a lot of people don’t realize is that by making something we inversely have an effect on the environment,” Francom said. “We have to take that into account. Plastics are a big issue.” VV

New businesses add to Viera, Suntree’s unique charm BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL

With so many new businesses popping up around the Viera area, it might be hard to keep track of all of them. First on the list of locals is The Blind Spot, which sells a range of shutters and blinds. The Blind Spot has been in Viera for 16 years, and it is opening a new storefront at 7954 North Wickham Road, Suite 118. “(What stands out most about The Blind Spot is) the family-oriented aspect of it,” said Jordan Bauer, a sales representative. “We want people when they walk in to

Just next door to the new Blind Spot storefront is The Rustic Brush, which now offers woodworking workshops of all kinds throughout the week. “We make a variety of everything,” said Alicia Davenport, the owner. “When you pick a workshop,

An Apple a day keeps Wooten happy at Visual Dynamics BY MARIA SONNENBERG The Apples Jay Wooten sells might not keep the doctor away, but they keep folks happily engaged with all the bells and whistles of technology. Wooten, who owns Visual Dynamics, is all about Apples, not Granny Smith types, but rather of the iPad variety. The store, with locations at 694 E. Eau Gallie Blvd. in Indian Harbour Beach and at The Avenue in Viera, is a veritable orchard of Apple products. “We offer sales, service and support on all Apple products, except for the iPhones, which we do not carry, but we repair,” said Wooten, who launched his company in 1988 after being smitten by the Apple 2. Visual Dynamics has earned Apple’s highest dealer certification, given to the best Apple-authorized service providers. If your Apple device is not up to par, Wooten’s techs will fix it. “We do in- and out-ofwarranty service and most repairs are done in-house,” Wooten said. They bumped them up to the next level. They’re beautiful.” Prices for the iMac start at

The new Air starts at $499, but fans of the 9.7inch screen version need not worry since it still is available at around $329. Wooten also notes that Apple just lowered the price of its breakthrough speaker, Apple Home Pod, to $299. That should make it very enticing for consumers. “It can integrate with home automation so you

Burgerim will feature interesting burgers for everyone BY CHRIS BONANNO Area burger enthusiasts in the Viera-Suntree area will have a new restaurant to patronize as a Burgerim restaurant will soon open at 2338 Citadel Way, just off of Lake Andrew Drive, near the

intersection with Judge Fran Jamieson Way in Viera. Burgerim, per the company’s website, describes itself as “an international fast casual franchise with a shiny new concept,” with that concept being the availability of gourmet burgers, featuring

3-ounce patties that the company says are available in solo form as well as in bundles of two, three or even 16. The patties are even available in far more forms than just a traditional beef patty as well, according to

Is it true that Varicose Veins are a sign of a medical issue? Yes. Please do not ignore signs of leg varicose veins. If you notice bulging veins, you have a significant medical condition. Bulging indicates a chronic medical condition. Constant dilation causes blood to stop blood flow back through the legs, leading to further damage. This includes swelling with tissue damage, legs swelling, aching legs, permanent skin pigmentation changes, along with ulcers.

Burgerim will soon open at 2338 Citadel Way, just off of Lake Andrew Drive in Viera. It will be located next to Viera Petworks.

Janae Gilliam, chief business development officer with Burgerim. “You can get a chicken, a turkey, a falafel, we have vegan options, we have our vegetarian patties,” Gilliam said. “They’re all customizable. We also have wings, bone in and bone out. We also have shakes. We also do dine-in, delivery, carryout, catering and we have beer and wine.” The restaurant is slated to open in roughly three months, according to Gilliam. Gilliam added that the area was a great fit for an eatery. “We like to go into areas that are going to represent the brands,” Gilliam added. “We want to make sure that we’re putting this into areas that fit the demographics for us. Demographics for us are, we feed everybody. It’s one of the things that makes Burgerim able to go everywhere.”

Burgerim is rapidly expanding its business, with 350 restaurants under construction that will be added to roughly 170 eateries that already are open, Gilliam noted. “In those areas, we have people who want to eat better,” Gilliam said. “We basically came in and we took two of the most popular food items in the world, which are pizza and burgers and we took one of them and we put a spin on it. We can feed anybody. We can feed vegetarians, we can feed vegans, we can feed highprotein, low-carbs. We kinda put the spin on traditional burgers. … It’s basically our customization level that helps us stand out. We’re here to be inclusive for everybody.” For more information, go to burgerim.com.. SUNTREENews

Suntree Country Club dedicates memorial to veterans BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL

Honoring veterans is an important part of the American lifestyle, even more so with the ample population of senior citizens in the Viera area. On April 7, the Suntree Country Club held a ceremony to announce the dedication of a new memorial on its golf course, dedicated to veterans. The bridge is called the Veterans Memorial Bridge and is located on the Challenger Course. The original idea was put forth by Fred Galey, a retired United States Air Force Colonel who is the chairman of the social committee of the Suntree Country Club. “We’ve got veterans that represent all services (here today),” Galey said. “(Veterans from) WWII, Vietnam, (etc.); and all branches of services. (The project was funded) within

the club.” During the ceremony, a bronze memorial plaque was presented by the social committee in honor of veterans, and the National Anthem was sung by Cynthia Pishdad, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel. “As a nation, we need memorials to connect us with our heroes, and the proud men and women that serve to keep us free,” said Michael W. Wynne, a former Secretary of the Air Force. “Truly, the connections to community make the whole concept of service resonate within our population, as service to country is, in fact, service to each individual community in the most straight-forward way.” After the ceremony, audience members were invited to participate in a poolside meeting at the Suntree club. “We have a lot of veterans here at the Suntree

Country Club,” said Shurell Reader, the director of communication at the Suntree club. “And with them always playing, it’d

be nice for them to see a veteran memorial on one of the bridges. “You don’t have to live in Viera or live in Suntree

to be part of the Suntree Country Club,” Reader added. “The surrounding communities are welcome, all.” VV

Healthy Hearts Viera owners believe happiness lies in healthy eating Organic food entrées are at the center of Healthy Hearts Viera, a new carryout eatery at TCS Kitchen in Suntree. The philosophy behind the meals from Healthy Hearts Viera is that without chemicals and additives, food is more nourishing and less stressful to the body. “Good, wholesome, organic food has so much impact on your overall health,” said co-owner Sherry Chang. “We've witnessed many accounts of people reversing ailments through diet change to the point where medications were no longer needed.” Chang, who studied macrobiotics, ran a café on Guam for 12 years and brings that experience to Healthy Hearts Viera. “Macrobiotics is about eating a balanced diet as it relates to our bodies pH balance,” Chang said. In Guam, Chang and her sister Jeanie Cooper emphasized the importance of healthy eating to customers.

Entrees are made from fresh, organic, healthy ingredients at Healthy Hearts Viera.

Sisters Chang and Cooper have a combination of family recipes and a food philosophy that goes along with the cooking. Asian and coming from Guam, they brought two different styles of cuisine. “While most of the produce we use can be sourced locally, others require ingredients from Asian countries,” Chang said. “We do also bring in bulk orders of certain organic ingredients when necessary.” With assistance and mentorship from Tim and Karen Shea at TCS Kitchen, Healthy Hearts Viera is off to a promising start. “Instead of jumping in head first and opening a

cafe again, we decided to take baby steps,” Chang said. “Farmers markets have been a great way of introducing ourselves and getting feedback.” Savory entrees include Chinese beef noodle soup, a Taiwan family recipe featuring grass-fed beef, organic vegetables and organic noodles. For a vegan alternative, there is the protein powerhouse salad filled with organic kale, chickpeas and vegetables. Vegan noodle soup, a vegan bowl with homemade

teriyaki sauce, Japanese dressings, and several dessert items also are on the menu. Young artist loves Corbeil Contest SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE Jacob Lombardo loves the Charlie Corbeil Youth Art Contest and hopes to compete in it for the next few years. “It allows children to express their inner artist and get recognized for it,’’ said Lombardo, a 12-yearold Suntree resident who is a seventh grader at DeLaura Middle School. Lombardo, who was born on Long Island, New York, created the triptych “Paradise Ocean” to reflect this year’s art contest theme

of the “Beauty of Wild Florida.” A triptych is a work of art that is divided into three sections. “My work is Cocoa Beach or the Sebastian River Inlet in the summer,’’ said Lombardo, who likes to play the guitar and paint portraits of dogs, cats, sea turtles and exotic animals. “It’s the colors of summer and it brings out the Florida in Florida. I used real sand from Cocoa Beach, silver glitter paint, royal blue paint, turquoise paint and white paint with splashes.’’ VV

The 2019 edition of Dangerous By Design includes traffic deaths that occurred between 2008 and 2017 from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), a national database of all fatal traffic crashes. The Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (SCTPO) was created by federal law to review and administer all policies and procedures applicable for state and federal transportation funding. And thanks to Brevard’s fatality ranking, one of the agency’s other goals is to educate and help seniors walk and bike safely throughout the county. According to the agency’s website — sctpo. com — the SCTPO provides transportation planning services for the Palm Bay, Melbourne and Titusville areas as designated by the U.S. Census Bureau. The SCTPO also coordinates transportation plans for the

Public input is sought throughout the planning process at public meetings and workshops. The SCTPO also provides a forum for cooperative decision making by officials

of the affected governmental entities with input from citizens and constituency groups. These plans serve as the framework for making transportation investment decisions in Brevard. Abby Hemenway, the public involvement officer for the SCTPO, said the report shows that Brevard County streets are not getting safer for everyone, especially for senior citizens. “We must all do our part as road users to increase the safety of our transportation network,” Hemenway said. “That’s why one of the goals of the SCTPO is to educate seniors on walking and bicycle safety.” For example, under the Education heading of the SCPTO website, is a list of resources on walking and bicycle safety for seniors. Some of the resources include:

“11 Steps to Safer Walking and Riding,” “Bicycle/ Pedestrian Laws” and “Rules of the Road for Riding Safely.” Hemenway also said the SCTPO works in conjunction with the Safe Mobility for Life Coalition in offering educational workshops, events and tips to help senior Floridians continue to meet their personal mobility needs to remain safe, independent and active in their communities as an aging road user. According to the website safemobilityfl.com, all of the information you need to improve the safety, access and mobility for Florida's aging road users is listed. Guide books are available to download and print. “All of our services are free of charge,” Hemenway said. “We want the public to be our best advocate because it takes a village to combat this alarming number of fatalities in our county.” VV

Help Mother Earth with a well-deserved gift Everyone can make a difference. Just ask Jane Goodall. “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you,’’ Goodall said. “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” That puts our actions in perspective.

With so many things happening in our lives, being bombarded about plastic pollution, food contamination, food waste, a recycling crisis, deforestation, water pollution, air pollution and species extinction, it can be overwhelming. These are big issues — why should we even bother? How can an ordinary person

help curb any of these pressing issues? We live in a special place that is worth every effort to preserve. In 2016, the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) identified the North American Coastal Plain as a biodiversity hotspot. It was the latest to be added to the list of hotspots on Earth. By definition, a biodiversity hotspot is an area that contains at least 1,500 species of vascular plants found nowhere else on Earth. This is known as an endemic species. It also has to have lost at least 70 percent of its primary native vegetation,

BEYOND the CURB Marcia Booth

according to cepf.net. Florida is home to more than 2,840 native or naturalized vascular plants with an endemism rate of almost 30 percent. More than 270 species of birds native to the North American Coastal Plain are 2.2 percent endemic. Of the 306 species of native mammals, 114 are

endemic to the area. There are 293 species of native reptiles, 113 of which are endemic. Fifty-seven of the 122 species of native amphibians are endemic. There are 424 species of freshwater fishes, with 138 endemic to the hotspot. All of Florida lies in the North American Coastal Plain, which means that Florida has a unique and rich environment. It also means Florida is in trouble since at least 70 percent of its natural habitat is gone. Taking into account that 36 hotspots have been identified, Earth is in a bit of a jam. So, as a gift to Mother Earth, here are a few ways anyone can help generate some positive impact: • Avoid disposable containers and packaging. Bring your own reusable bag, cup, bottle and containers. Pack snacks and lunch in reusable containers. Say no to straws and buy in bulk. • Know what you feed your body. Read labels to avoid harmful or unsustainable ingredients such as additives, palm oil and microplastics. Buy in-season and organic foods. Prepare what you eat. Cut down on the meat you eat or become a vegetarian or vegan. • Practice no excess. Put on your plate what you know you can eat. Buy enough, but not more. Buy recycled or second hand; donate, don’t waste. • Recycle what you can. Learn what can be recycled in your area. Take electronics and hard-to-recycle or reusable materials to Recycle Brevard (RecycleBrevard. org). Compost in some section of the backyard. • Conserve and keep water clean. Install a dual-flush system; turn off the tap when it’s not in use; fix leaks; adjust sprinklers; use rain barrels; wipe off greasy dishes before washing them; use a carwash service; remember not to flush biodegradable bags or wipes; and follow local fertilizer ordinance. • Save energy. Use cold water for laundry and dishes; clean washer and air filters; unplug or turn off what’s not in use; switch to solar. • Go native and local. Plant native plants and trees; shop at local farmers markets; walk and bike whenever you can. Review the list and challenge yourself. Start your journey now. Jane Goodall said, “the greatest danger to our future is apathy.” VV Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@RecycleBrevard.org.

idea of even asking for this, because I don't believe it's the safe option. “There are certain golf cart communities that are safe for golf carts,” Isnardi added. "Golf carts are made for the golf course. I think the risk is too great.” Some problems that many East and West Viera residents have been dealing with are those who are not only using golf carts as an alternate transportation, but also have been prevented from crossing from one area of Viera to

the other. This prevention essentially divides East and West Viera for golf cart users. Viera High School freshman Anna-Maria Tea told the board she wants to use a golf cart over the interchange. “The golf cart usage has boomed in Viera over the past few years, serving as an alternate transportation option for many people,” Tea said. “I personally used our golf cart to get to and from school, to socialize with friends and to get to and from the golf courses.”

Long-time resident William Hobson also voiced concerns. “In 2007, when the bridge opened up, it opened up a new area for us,” Hobson said. “It gave us access to church, (to) schools, shopping and much more. By cutting off the throat (of traffic) at Viera and at Wickham, there’s no way to get to the other side. “I never thought it was illegal to go over the bridge,” Hobson stated from the podium. “And in the 10 years that I’ve been going over that bridge (via golf cart), I’ve never experienced a problem.”VV

Insects leave observers hopping about their identity Spinning tales about the grasshopper and similar insects. Grasshoppers are commonly misidentified with other insects. Similarities in body structure, camouflage coloration, antennae for touch or smell, behavior, singing calls (often by the male) or other attributes might bewilder the observer. What insect is it? The grasshopper is basically green. With some exceptions, grasshoppers sing by rubbing a hind leg against the forewing to produce calls. Daytime activity is typical. Swarming never or rarely occurs. For leaping, powerful rear legs catapult this insect 20 times the length of the body. Flight is mostly short distance. If handled, it defensively spits out brown liquid — called tobacco juice. Relatives are katydids and crickets. The locust, a species of the short-horned grasshopper, displays green when solitary and black and brown when gregarious (swarming phase). Some swarms have maintained trillions of insects. Actually, the Year of the Locust in the Great Plains was 1874 and 1875. The now-extinct Rocky Mountain locusts “ate everything but

the mortgage.” The katydid (bush cricket or long-horned grasshopper) is essentially green. The name evolved from the sound of unique forewings rubbing together. Both genders sing. Antennae might be longer than the body. Ears on the front legs are supposedly the smallest ears of any animal but can detect the ultrasonic click of the bat. Activity is common at night. It ordinarily does not fly but might travel in swarms. Jumping compares to the grasshopper. This is the “Mormon cricket” which devoured the crops of Utah Mormon pioneers in 1848. The house cricket is mainly brown and the field cricket is mainly black. The name is derived from the sound of rubbing the wings together. Chirping is faster in hot temperatures. Antennae might be longer than the body. Jumping 30 times the body length is possible with sturdy hind legs. It is mostly nocturnal and is generally

found in small groups. In China, crickets are bred for fighting; some are worth $1,600 each. The cicada is likely to be black or brown. Gathering in large numbers above ground, it is mistaken for the locust. Actually, the cicada does not swarm or jump. Particularly during daytime, buzzing is produced by membranes (tymbals) of the abdomen, heard by the female a mile away. This is presumably the loudest insect sound produced and is irritating at times. Cicadas might land on people operating landscaping tools or mowers — confusing the noise with the vibration from male cicadas. The praying mantis varies from green to brown. This ambush predator, often large, might hold its prominent front legs in a praying pose or use them to capture prey which is eaten live. Grasshoppers are delectable. Activity occurs day or night. Evidently, being the only insect able to turn its head 180 degrees helps entrap victims or avert predators. In addition, it can fly. To some, its body seems to be an exaggerated grasshopper. The walking stick or stick bug is green, brown or black. It is confused with the mantis

due to camouflage and size. Superbly disguised, the body can resemble a stick or imitate a twig rocking in the wind. Pretending to be dead dissuades predators. If captured, it can detach a leg to flee; amazingly, the limb can regrow, but not in adulthood. Mostly nocturnal, it remains motionless in daytime under plants or leaves. Relatives of the walking stick are the grasshopper, cricket and mantis.

Evidently, insects can be beneficial. The antennae of the walking stick and cricket are researched for insect tactile sense. The walking stick and the mantis are regularly kept as pets. Moreover, some of these high-protein bugs are consumed by various cultures out of necessity. Incidentally, some gourmets savor grasshoppers fried, smoked or toasted — occasionally coated with chocolate. VV
