Shelly Hartmann says she can’t wait to come to work every day as a custodian at Viera High School, and that attitude has landed her the title of the school’s Employee of the Year. Formerly garnering a similar honor as custodian at Cocoa Beach JuniorSenior High School, this time Hartmann went on to become the irst employee from VHS to be named one of six inalists for the district-wide honor. “I started out as a teaching assistant but they did away with that program. I became a custodian and love it. I take care of all the grounds and just love the freedom of being outside,’’ she said. On the honors, Hartmann said she knew she had been nominated but was completely surprised about reaching the district level. “Being one of the six inalists, out of 92 in the district,

that was the shocker for me,’’ she said. And there are other reasons for Hartmann to be singled out. Shelly was the on-site staff person who helped with the needs for grounds use or equipment for the Tech Know Expo held at Viera High School on March 29, according to Tom Fulmer, a presenter who helped with the coordination. “Shelly was incredible. She was on-site the entire day, and whatever we needed, she went out of her way to make it happen,” said Fulmer, founder of the National Entrepreneurs Network, based in Melbourne. Fulmer led a workshop on the use of high-tech marketing tools to reach new clients cost effectively. Hartmann was on hand to help Fulmer coordinate the needs for sound equipment and Internet access for fellow presenters. “It is so refreshing to work with someone who is responsible, creative and can-do, and most importantly, willdo,” he said. Hartmann, who works with her husband Walter on Hartmann Irrigation, is pleased to have received a clock, plaque and gift certiicate for her Employee of the Year honor, but she’s just as happy about continuing her duties on the job. “When you like what you do, and come to work with a smile on your face, I think it shows and people recognize that,’’ she said. AFTAC breaks ground on new facility BY MARY BROTHERTON

On Friday, June 17, Patrick Air Force Base held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new AFTAC facility on an 11-acre parcel on the west side of South Patrick Drive between the Department of State aircraft hangars and the 45th Space Wing Security Forces Complex. AFTAC is an acronym for Air Force Technical Applications Center. There will be two major facilities that will host the AFTAC Operations Center (AOC). The AOC is a sophisticated information technology system that communicates with a network of subsurface, ground-based, and spacebased sensors to make up the United States Atomic Energy Detection System. The HQ replacement facility is 276,000 square feet. Additionally, there will be a 38,000-squarefoot analysis laboratory. In addition to administrative space for nearly 1,000 employees, there is also a large industrial area which

supports AFTAC’s logistics functions. According to sources at PAFB, Congress has authorized $158M for this project. Hensel Phelps of Orlando was awarded the contract. Much of the work on this project will be completed by local companies providing a positive financial impact within the community. Approximately 45 new civilian authorizations

have been added to operate the analysis laboratory. The existing facility was constructed almost 60 years ago and is costly to operate and maintain. With the expansion of AFTAC’s mission over the past three decades, staff and functions have outgrown the current facility, which will be demolished once construction and transition is completed in 2013 or early 2014. Fields of the Unforgotten BY MARY BROTHERTON

Last year, in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the 2001 New York Trade Tower attack, Suntree artist Suzanne Frank erected dozens of lags on U.S. 1 in front of the Friendship Fellowship at Pineda, a Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Rockledge. Also, in 2010, Frank presented Madeline Albright, our nation’s irst female secretary of state, with a sculpture called “The Unforgotten” as part of her ongoing project to remember 9/11 and honor the heroes and victims of the tragedy. Company lights up Fourth of July sky by MARIA SONNENbERG

Viera’s Great American Celebration is as American as baseball and apple pie, involving the Brevard County Manatees as they take on the Clearwater Threshers as part of this year’s festivities. The burgers and barbecue are there, too, but the jewel in the crown of the party is the fireworks show engineered by Space Coast Stadium, with the help of Creative Pyrotechnics of Orlando. “It’s primarily a traditional fireworks show, but they always interject some new things,” said Kyle Smith, general manager at Space Coast Stadium. The Brevard County Manatees and Creative Pyrotechnics recently extended their partnership through 2013. Creative Pyrotechnics provided fireworks for the Manatees beginning in 2010, so the experts are no strangers to the venue. All of the displays are electronically fired with state-of-the-art digital firing systems setup and fired by experienced pyrotechnicians. With safety the company’s top priority, all the techs are updated as soon as new standards are implemented to keep them knowledgeable about new laws and regulations.

Creative Pyrotechnics guarantees that no two shows will ever be the same, which is one reason enthusiasts return to the Great American Celebration year after year. One of the reasons organizations like the Viera Future Foundation use Creative Pyrotechnics is the company’s all inclusive policy, which guarantees more than a memorable display in the night sky. It guarantees safety and security. Everything from the first site inspection, permitting and insurance to fire truck standby or fire marshal fire watch fees, professional pyrotechnics crew to 100% cleanup of the site is covered. If you’re worried about the tinder-dry conditions, don’t. Brevard County Fire Department will have a fire truck on site. For more information, call 407-234-0270. VV

Saying “I do” at the zoo By AngelA Smith

Guests who attended Alexis Bolen and Michael Schaaf’s wedding Memorial Day weekend, were surprised to be greeted by two exotic animals instead of ushers. Rather than saying “I do” in a hotel ballroom, banquet hall, or on the beach, Bolen and Schaaf, chose to say their vows among family, friends and wild animals at the Brevard Zoo. The Melbourne Beach couple chose the zoo for their wedding ceremony and reception hoping for a unique experience for their guests and lifetime memories for themselves. “I’ve been to the zoo multiple times and never realized that they had the facilities to accommodate weddings,” Bolen said. “So I was really excited actually, because I figured that it would be a unique thing that would offer more of what we needed.”

C

After scoping out places along the Space Coast, Bolen knew that her wedding budget required an unusual location. “The beach was too expensive and they didn’t have good options if it rained,” Bolen said. “And the ballrooms were too typical and a little bit stuffy and very expensive.” They visited the zoo and met with the wedding coordinator. They learned that giraffes could be seen from the ceremony site, which overlooked the Nyami Nyami River, and sealed the deal. “The entire idea is to see them [giraffes], which is why we did our wedding at 1 p.m.,” Bolen said. While the bride walked down the aisle to harp tones, a giraffe watched as the ceremony began, stealing a few looks from the bride’s moment. Bolen and Schaaf aren’t

Brevard interfaith Coalition reclaims a ministry By Linda Wiggins

A 20 percent cut to services for children in foster care will leave significant holes in their safely net and a faithbased service group is calling on churches to fill them. The Brevard Interfaith Coalition is a network of all churches, temples and other congregations that do outreach to help those less fortunate. The group met May 26 at St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church in Suntree, next to fellow faithgroup member Temple Beth Shalom, to help devise a plan to meet what it calls a tidal wave of social need that the government can not meet. The Coalition is a program of Catholic Charities of Central Florida’s Brevard Region, launched with the help of a three-year grant from the agency that coordinates foster care, which runs out June 30. “You’re going to see the number of children in foster care double and triple

if churches don’t step up to help us,” Catholic Charities Brevard Region director Beverly Lampley said of the $1 million in cuts, mostly to prevention programs aimed at keeping children from being removed from their homes and placed in care. There are about 800 children in the foster care system, down from 1,500 when Brevard Family Partnership formed as a nonprofit agency five years ago to coordinate services contracted through the Department of Children and Families. The reduction is credited to BFP’s awardwinning prevention program, called Brevard CARES, that is being replicated around the country. At the same time, it is shrinking locally due to lack of funds. Its approach is to surround an at-risk family with resources to strengthen it and keep children out of foster care. Organizing families within faith communities to provide temporary to permanent foster care and

adoption without having children enter the system is one of those resources, which was the goal of the grant. This new role should not be a stretch, according to one clergy leader. “The church shouldn’t feel too bad about reclaiming a ministry that was entrusted to us to begin with,” said Fr. Drew Wales, pastor at St. Michael Archangel Church in Rockledge and a member of the Coalition’s advisory board. He said the shift away from the church to government social service programs, about 50 years ago, was a “failed experiment,” and exhorted fellow Coalition members to step up to fill the void. For more information, call Coalition coordinator Carrie Thomas at 321-636-6144 or go to brevardinterfaithcoalition. org. VV

Brevard Interfaith Coalition coordinator Carrie Thomas, assistant coordinator Laurie Meldrum, advisory council members Laura Parsons and Father Demetri Tsigas, along with Catholic Charities of Central Florida’s Brevard Region director Beverly Lampley (second from the right) are encouraging more congregants to do more social service like taking in children who need parents.

It’s All-Star time for the Viera/Suntree Little League

It’s time to create a few more memories, which is certainly what the Viera/ Suntree Majors All-Stars did last year, winning the state championship and advancing all the way to the Southeast Regional tournament final. Most of those players are now on the Junior level, which features 13 and 14 year olds. The teams were announced June 15, with All-Star play beginning at the end of June for the 9-10 and 11-year old teams and July 5 for the Majors, Juniors and Seniors. “We’re excited about our Juniors team because we have a lot of talented 14 year olds as well,” VSLL president Eric Power said. “Now, we’re going to pool the 13-year olds with the 14 year olds.” Other teams to look out for will be the 9-10 year-old All

Stars. Because the league had so many players this season, it is going to field two different squads—the Green team and the Gold team. Considering last year’s 9-10 year-old team reached the state championship game, the VSLL has doubled its chances of returning to the big game. Christian Smallwood, who played a key role on last year’s Majors team that brought national attention to the Viera Suntree Little League, is again playing on the Majors level and should be a force as the VSLL tries to make another long postseason run. Other teams competing for Viera during the All-Star season include the 9-10 year-old and Majors division softball teams. Viera’s All-Stars could be a team to watch in the Majors division considering the Thundering Herd won

Viera’s Fleig tied for first in nation By Carl Kotala

Nick Fleig has put himself on the national recruiting map. The Viera High rising senior safety tied for first in the nation—yes, the nation—at the Under Armour Combine 360 with a score of 302. Matthew Emineth, a running back from Glendale, Ariz. also posted a score of 302. The Under Armour Combine website states the 360 score is based on three main areas of performance: movement, athleticism and character. The athletes go through a wave of tests, similar to an NFL combine where they are measured in events like the 40-yard dash, vertical jump and bench press. Fleig ran a 4.85 in the 40, which was actually slower than the 4.76 he ran at the Nike Sparq Combine earlier this year, with a 32-inch vertical jump and he did 14 repetitions on the bench press. While none of his numbers jumped out, they were all solid. “I was really surprised about it when I heard,” Fleig said about his No. 1 status. “I did the Sparq [Combine] and I placed 22nd out of the 900 that were there. But you only

did four events in that one where at the Under Armour one, you do about 12 events, so it’s more well-rounded, and I guess, better suited for the type of athlete I am.” Reached by phone, Fleig was in North Carolina with a number of Viera teammates. After taking a tour of the UNC campus, he was scheduled to take part in camps at North Carolina State and Duke.

June 20, 2011 Nick Fleig, a rising senior safety at Viera High, tied for the top score in the nation at the Under Armour 360 Combine. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound rising senior said he has received a lot of contact from Ivy League schools as well as schools from the Patriot League, the Citadel, Furman and Charleston Southern. Now he has a chance to draw even more attention to himself, and the Viera High program. VV

Viera High student athlete Corbin Jackson signed a letter of intent to attend Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. By Carl Kotala

Viera High senior boys basketball standout Corbin Jackson has signed a national letter of intent to attend Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. The 6-foot-7 forward was the most prolific scorer in Viera High history, becoming the first player to top 1,000 points. He selected All-Cape Coast Conference as both a junior and a senior and led the conference in points, rebounds and blocked shots as a senior. He averaged 19

points, 13 rebounds and four blocks per game. Carson Newman Eagles men’s basketball coach Chuck Benson had this to say about Jackson in a school release: “Corbin is a second generation Eagle. His father Larry played here in the 80’s on some great teams. Corbin is extremely long and athletic and can play both inside and out. He is an outstanding driver and passer. Corbin can rebound the ball out of his area and is a shot blocker. He has tons of potential.” VV WWW.PLANETSMOOTHIE.COM

The search is on for a replacement principal at Viera High School. Students and parents are hoping a new administrator is in place by the start of the school year in early August. Mark Tormoen was universally liked. “He’s a great person. We’re going to miss him,” said Andrew Head, rising senior and a quarterback on the Hawks football team. Tormoen submitted his retirement letter June 23, the day after receiving disciplinary action for taking alleged improper actions to keep the also popular Paul Frazier aboard as head football coach. Since 1996, the Viera Future Foundation has brought Baseball on the Berm to Brevard County, continuing a strong tradition of family fun, food, fireworks and baseball. This year, the Brevard Manatees play the Clearwater Thrashers at 7:05 p.m. on July 4. Gates open at 6 p.m. The $15 tickets must be purchased in advance for cash, at exclusive locations in Viera. With admission to Space Coast Stadium, ticket-holders have access to an all-youcan-eat-and-drink buffet picnic and a special souvenir.

The Manatee Tiki Bar will sell alcohol. The berm area is secured and safe for smaller children to run and play while waiting for the game to begin. Children under 2 are admitted free. Baseball fans may opt to sit in the bleachers or bring chairs and blankets for the berm, which is where all the food and drinks will be served. Wristbands will identify berm ticket holders, allowing them complete access to all the event’s activities and the almost never-ending buffet. Summer camps and counselors make learning new things fun BY GEORGE WHITE

VIERA VOICE George White

Teens entering 6th through 8th grades participate in the Outdoor Adventure Camp sponsored by UF/Brevard County Extension Service/4-H.

It’s summertime and inding summer camp fun is easy. Teen camp counselors have the opportunity to apprentice with experts, practice coaching or teaching techniques, develop lifelong networks, gain impressive resume experience and earn possible internship credit. Many universities offer internship credit in various ields like parks and recreation, education, child development, tourism, etc. for students who work as camp counselors. Here, in Brevard County, campers and counselors have many options from which to choose, topped in total numbers by camps at Viera Regional Community Center at 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way. “It’s a good feeling to be

so popular that kids want to come back,” said organizer Mandi Curley. “We’re probably one of the most popular camps in the county. We have 225 registered each week and we’re usually full.” Viera Dance Conservatory at 3280 Suntree Blvd., Suite 107B, puts on a dance camp for ages 4 through 8 and a summer intensive program for more advanced dancers. Owner Bonnie Callahan said, “Every day we introduce the little ones to different styles of dance, like ballet, hip hop and lyrical. The summer intensive program is to increase their level and technique to prepare them to be professionals. It also gives the older kids a chance to serve as counselors for the younger kids.” Music Together of Greater Brevard, headquartered at The Henegar Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne, holds classes at Pizza Gallery in Viera and the

Unity Center in North Merritt Island. “We believe that all children are inherently musical. They just need to be exposed to and have the opportunity to experiment and explore music,” said director Debra Hart. “I’m really passionate about bringing music into people’s homes. Before TV, it used to be everywhere and people would create it. We’re trying to bring the music back.” Outdoor Adventure Camp sponsored by University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Services Brevard County Extension Service, gives older children the opportunity to experience local eco-gems under the direction of 4-H agents Vanessa SperoSwingle and Holly Abeels. “It’s great to get the kids outdoors. We’re sneaking in the education but we’re keeping it fun. Because they’re middle schoolers, we allow them to take it at their

own pace,” Spero-Swingle said. Surfguys Surf School owner George Jones knows the trick to summer camp success. “I have a minor case of Peter Pan syndrome. I’ve got it made. I get to help them realize the vision of riding the board. Small waves, big foamy boards and early success is the key. I get them riding the irst day,” he said. Thanks to energetic, youthful camp directors and counselors, children can experience a variety of summer camps, while learning new skills. Some may even earn college credits. Boy makes reading adventure a reality BY LINDA WIGGINS

Gavin Weathers gave his body a break and went on an adventure in his mind earlier this summer. The extreme-sports daredevil recently won an end-ofschool-year prize for reading a number of Magic Tree House tales at Suntree Elementary School. The rising third grader broke his arm downhill skateboarding, which prevented his winning the National Scholastic Suring Association Contest. He still surfed the waves with a waterproof cast and won several ifth place prizes. Reading was a departure from danger. “He’s really read a lot in the past three weeks,” Gavin’s father Barry said at the May 19 Magic Tree House reading celebration, held in the school’s media center. “I suppose that’s a

little safer way to spend his time.” The adventure series features brother and sister heroes who enter a magical tree house and exit to faraway lands, different time periods and any place their imaginations can take them. Suntree media specialist Kim Swinehart chose the series to light a ire for reading under the most readingavoidant students. “It’s really important to get a student not only to be able to read, but to enjoy reading,” Swinehart said. “Reading for pleasure is what gains them reading luency. And being able to read well sets the stage for all other learning they will do in their school careers.” The broken arm not withstanding, Barry Weathers has been hoping Gavin would seek a more sensible sport. He has tried to dissuade Gavin from skateboarding, despite the fact they have a

half-pipe in the driveway of their Suntree home. The real reason? “With the Florida heat, it’s more fun being a spectator at the beach than at a skateboard contest in a hot parking lot. You can dress for the beach and relax,” Weathers said adding that he favors the NSSA competition because it requires a student maintain a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average. The single father said, “Gavin’s mom is really not in the picture. I suppose you could say it just doesn’t occur to me that it might not be the right thing to do.” “So many of Gavin’s friends’ moms tell me they’d never let their kids do this, or never let their kids do that.” And how does Gavin feel about being able to indulge his every whim for extreme sports? “It’s awesome!” he said. SOMEONE Lois Marie Search

Lois Marie Search is a little person who gives big. Recently it was the community’s turn to give to her. She needed a new motorized wheel chair and Pastor Paul Rosbury helped get the word out, resulting in the needed funds for her new wheels. Search, who publishes a magazine distributed to individuals around the Space Coast who need equipment and other resources to meet what she calls “diverse needs,” is starting a nonprofit agency to pay it forward. In what kind of car did you learn to drive? A 1984 yellow Chevy van that I saved up money for working part time. Unlike other folks who might get their first car at 16, I was an adult but I still had to train my brain and my body to work an adapted steering, power and braking set up. The friend who rode with me to teach me how to drive

literally risked life and limb while I got the hang of it.

Regarding your mission to meet special needs, why do you say “diverse” instead of “special”? We are all special, created by God for a unique purpose. That’s how I like to use that word. However, some of us have different needs. When we can meet these diverse needs, then is when each person can gain access to their best life.

What is your favorite cause? I am on the Interagency Council of Brevard for Individuals with Disabilities, which meets at the School District headquarters in Viera. The goal is to help people transition from school to a productive, fulfilling life.

Words to live by:

“Determination is the deepest desire that puts you on the road of success.”

How many social networking profiles do you regularly use? I mostly use Facebook, but I make sure to see my friends face to face too. I recently called friends together with a party invitation on Facebook and said instead of birthday presents they could just pay for their own lunch. That killed two birds with one stone, because I reached out by Facebook and got to see friends in person.

What historical event can you vividly remember? I want to say something profound, like when man walked on the moon, but I keep going back to my own personal experience, and besides I wasn’t born yet, then. It was when, at last, the big day was here and my van was ready to hit the highway. You see people driving in cars day in and day out, so you don’t realize what a miracle it is to get your own

they are. QR codes are the postage stamp-sized, two dimensional square patterns that hold information and they are appearing on business cards, in print ads and even on Realtor’s signs in front of houses. When read by a smart phone with a QR code reader, these little squares with the unusual designs direct the phone to call another phone, visit a website, show a video, offer a coupon, give

directions or perform other actions. Some present video demonstrations or how-to instructions. Experts say that since the creation of rich media and adoption of smart phones, advertisers use videos in their advertising. QR code, combined with current marketing programs takes advertising to a new level. With smart phones selling for as little as $50, or free in some cases, more and more

people are making the switch from regular cell phones and today’s savvy business owners now have mobile websites. These are websites that are smart phone-friendly, loading quicker and providing more than traditional websites. QR codes and smart phones work in as many ways as people can imagine. Some have been programmed to track event tickets, send electronic documents securely through

the postal mail and track the hits on specific types of advertising to see what is influencing customers. The United States Post Office is offering a 3 percent discount to people who print QR codes on their mass mailings during July and August, which can be a considerable savings for business owners – and that’s just a sample. For more information call 321-373-1212 or just scan the QR code. VV

What is the cause for your diverse needs? I have Diastrophic Dysplasia, a very rare type of dwarfism that affects mobility. If you want to find out more about it you can go to

What is the next thing you need to live your life more fully? I need a special lock kit to electronically tie down my wheelchair to my van while I drive to give me 100 percent independence.

When was the last time $35 provided a great evening with a souvenir? Meridith Hall, a project manager for a contractor with NASA, decided in September of 2010 to start a business that provided people with that opportunity. Businesses find Devereux the best local investment BY LINDA WIGGINS

“Children and young adults living at Devereux are likely the most needy residents of Viera and are worthy of embrace by the community,” according to founder of a business networking group that has launched a drive to collect backpacks and school supplies for the youngsters. Viera Means Business was started last year by Jill Gaines, owner of Bluewater Creative Group, which publishes VIERA VOICE and SENIOR LIFE newspapers. Initially intended as a service for the newspapers’ advertisers, the group has come into its own as both a business- and communitydevelopment juggernaut. “Residents and businesses want to reach out to help at-risk students, but all our schools in Viera, Suntree

and south Rockledge are the best, surrounded by upperincome families whose parents invest their time and resources in their children’s education,” said Gaines, a resident of Suntree whose businesses are in Viera. “Devereux is a way to help children in need succeed at school and change their lives.” Members of Viera Means Business have sent water puriiers to Japan in the wake of the tsunami and earth quake; supported Harmony Farms in its new program to reach injured warriors with equine-assisted therapy; and are sponsoring Brevard Remembers 9/11 at Space Coast Stadium on Sept. 11. The events purpose is to remember loved ones lost in the tragedy a decade ago; honor irst responders and appreciate active and reserve military members who have

been responding ever since. “I tend to go to a lot of networking meetings,” said Tom Fulmer, Viera Means Business member and founder of National Entrepreneurs Network, which hosts a weekly motivational meeting at Duran Golf’s Tradewinds Restaurant in Viera. “This is the only place where I have seen a number of nonproit groups meeting regularly alongside for-proit companies that are there to sell to each other,” Fulmer said. “It obviously is because Jill Gaines has a heart to help the community, and wants to be able to do more than just give free advertising to support fund-raising events by nonproits.” Donations can be dropped off at the July 14 meeting of Viera Means Business. Andrew Duda would be proud, very proud. Eight-five years after he brought the ranching and later farming operations to Brevard that would become the town of Viera, his descendents are marking that milestone with a celebration of freedom. A. Duda & Sons and their community development counterpart, The Viera Company, are the presenting sponsors of Brevard Remembers 9/11, to be held at Space Coast Stadium on Sept. 11. The event marks the decade milestone since the terror attacks against U.S citizens, launching a fight for freedom. Duda is giving $100 for each year in Brevard, or $8500. The event will kick off a year of celebrations revolving around the number 85. “In this country, we take for granted the freedom that we enjoy,” said Joseph Duda, retired TVC chairman who lives in Viera. “We want to bring to the attention of everyone that freedom isn’t free, that it was paid for with a cost. It costs lives, it costs resources, and it costs our eternal vigilance not to forget important events like 9/11 so that we don’t become complacent and get destroyed.” The Dudas named the community Viera because it means “faith” in their native Slovak tongue. the attention of The Viera Company. “We initially wanted to raise awareness of the growing need to help those less fortunate, and get more churches and their members involved in outreach efforts,” Meyr said. The event’s goal is to call the community together to remember loved ones lost in 9/11, acknowledge first-responders, and appreciate active and reserve military who have been responding ever since. “What we discovered along the way is that our military returning from deployment need to be cared for, their emotional and physical wounds tended to by the community in appreciation for their sacrifice,” Meyr said. Musician magician is on a mission to make kids laugh BY LINDA WIGGINS

When John Anderson’s full-time job disappeared in 2005, his alter-ego magician pulled a rabbit out of his hat. What manifested is a business that brings music, magic and a message to children and adults in the community, and a mission that brings God to unchurched children in Romania. His business, After the Laughter: You’re Left with a Lesson, gives Anderson the chance to perform in from of a group or stroll through a crowd as a magician, musician or comedian, and tap his teacher roots to transfer knowledge to children or adults sugar-coated in fun. “John has a good sense of how to engage people in an entertaining way,” said Henry Owens, Ph.D., licensed psychologist at the Owens Center for Biofeedback and Psychological Services in Viera. Owens is also a magician and uses his tricks to engage

Although it’s a Saturday morning, the Suntree Business Center parking lot isn’t vacant. It’s lined with tents illed with food, and everything from Tupperware to sundresses for sale. The weekly setup oficially became the Suntree Outdoor Marketplace last October, where individuals set up shop hoping to grab the attention of passersby and to make some cash. “It’s right around the corner from where I live,” said Joan Carvalaho, of Suntree. “I like the outdoor environment; it’s friendly, and everyone seems to know each other.” While the marketplace on Suntree Blvd. is only open four hours a week, it’s already gained speed and hooked weekly buyers. “I didn’t realize what it was. Now this is my third trip,” said Michael Ryan, of Palm Bay. “It’s neat.”

children as well. He teaches shy children simple feats to break the ice with other children and make friends. “Science looks like magic until you understand how it works,” Anderson said. “You can get kids excited about learning by weaving in facts with entertainment, and you can show them the ‘trick’ and then teach the scientiic or mathematical reason it happens.” This magician has no trouble telling his secrets after wowing the crowd. “It’s important that children know that all magic is illusion. Like science, it’s magic until you know how it works.” This distinction is important because as a missionary and local man of God, Anderson makes it plain that he merely works with trickery of the eye. Illusion is not considered evil in the Bible, as would be witchcraft or calling on evil spirits, according to Anderson. Anderson used the tricks

to attract the attention of orphans and other needy children in impoverished areas of Romania’s Transylvania during a missionary trip June 16-26. He went with There is Hope missionary founders Tom and Arlene Beal of First Baptist Church of Melbourne. The Melbourne Beach couple has made the trip to the region 28 times since 1991. “Once we attract their attention we can teach them about God and Jesus Christ, grace, forgiveness, salvation,” Anderson said. The group led Vacation Bible Schools in 10 villages, reaching 1,000 children. Their goal is to establish music ministries in several churches to enhance worship independent of the group’s missions. For more information about Anderson’s performances or to make a donation to There is Hope Foundation for the mission outreach, email Anderson at john@afterthelaughter.com or call 321-698-2398. VV

Elizabeth Shaw of Merritt Island recently became a vendor, selling her homemade seashell jewelry, and has already had repeat shoppers purchase items. “Today, I haven’t sold much, but I had a woman last week come and request that I make something special for her, and she came today,” Shaw said. “It’s my own personal works of art... market places are a good it.” Karen Shea, owner of TCS Foods, operates in the business center, and realized the need for a community marketplace where people could purchase local items, supporting the local economy. “We have such a busy street and plenty of parking, so we said, ‘let’s give it a try’,” Shea said. “We were just trying to help everyone out to have a way to make money.” Since its inception in October, according to Shea, the marketplace has had almost 400 visitors, and on

average, 25 active sellers. “It’s a great addition to the community,” said William Johnson of Rockledge. “It’s something different.” VV

The Avenue Viera continues to grow

The most recent addition to The Avenue Viera is Ideal Image Laser Hair Removal, but the business is not new to Brevard County. Moving from its location on Merritt Island, the center is centrally located to serve the entire Space Coast. Ideal Image is located in Suite 121, near Belk. For more information, call 321-456-5665. Coming soon, is Pita Pit, an eating establishment based on the idea that people want to eat in a place with great tasting food that’s healthy, fresh, and still served fast. VV

The Viera Conference Center at our hotel near Cape Canaveral has over 7000 sq. ft. of space and can handle groups of 10 - 700. The Grand Foyer and pool area add to our flexibility. We provide state-of-the-art facilities with all equipment you may need.

Ultimate Dance Florida comes to Viera BY MARY BROTHERTON

Annette Alvarez-Gutches and her husband Brad Gutches opened Ultimate Dance Florida in Viera on Saturday, June 25, 2011. The studio is located in the plaza on the corner of Murrell Road and Viera Blvd., next to SunBay Fitness Center at 5410 Murrell Road, Suite 119. Alvarez-Gutches, who has been dancing since she was 2 and teaching since she was

16, is certiied by American Ballet Theater to teach its National Training Curriculum from Primary to Level 3 as well as being certiied by test to teach through Dance Masters of America and Florida Dance Masters. She is on the board of directors for Florida Dance Masters and a test examiner. She judges national dance competitions across the country. “I attend conventions and study programs on a regular basis to keep up with

the trends in dance education and styles of dance,” She said. “I love taking my dancers with me to these, as exposure to as many styles and teachers as we can work in only helps them with their own progress.” In 1993, she started Ultimate Dance Florida in Ft. Lauderdale, and moved her studio to West Melbourne in 2004. She said she believes her educational background, “is very applicable to studio ownership and working with children and their parents on a daily basis.”

Brad Gutches said his wife was personally asked by the NYC producers of Engaged and Underage to choreograph a ballroom dance for the MTV premiere episode due to her reputation and word of mouth in the dance industry. They will keep the Melbourne studio open.

Promising to keep families together By ANGELA SMITH

VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins

Rev. Ron Meyr of Faith “Viera” Lutheran Church described how his church will be used to house homeless families with children on the road to independence as a Family Promise network church, on June 19, 2011.

Faith Viera Lutheran Church serves as a place of worship. For some, it will serve as their home at night. The Viera church is one of five congregations of the 13 needed in Brevard County that have committed to opening their doors to house homeless families in partnership with Family Promise of Brevard, a nonprofit organization within the national Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) that focuses on helping families who have lost their homes due to the economy. “It’s incredible how many families there are who need housing,” said Dan Swatosh, president of Family Promise of Brevard. “We have probably 9,000 people in Brevard

County that are homeless. That’s a tremendous number of people.” According to the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH), families are the fastest rising demographic of the homeless sector in the United States, and Brevard County is no exception. “It’s going to provide housing and give families back the dignity they’ve lost,” Swatosh said. “They are dignified, intelligent people and what we are trying to do is [help them] regain their own stature.” Although there are existing homeless facilities in the area, there are none to house complete families, only men and women separately. Family Promise began in 2007 and has slowly gained speed in the past year by

procuring a day center in Rockledge that will cost a dollar a year to lease. It is where the adults will spend time participating in counseling sessions, learning how to budget money and look for employment, while their children continue to attend their same schools. The congregations will then house families for one week during the night, three times per year, relying on volunteers to set up beds, prepare meals and stay at the church throughout the week. Dick Lovisone, vice president of Family Promise of Brevard said, “The thrust of the entire program, quite frankly, is the volunteers. They are the meat and potatoes, if you will, of the whole program.” One Faith “Viera” Lutheran Church member couldn’t wait to sign up to start helping. “We’ll do anything and anyway of whatever we can do to help families stay together,” said Patti Koslowski, of Suntree. “There is such a big need in our community here for families to be able to be together. Our church will be getting as much back from the people that we are helping, as we will be giving.” According Lovisone, Koslowski is exactly right. “In my experience I saw the affect on the congregation. It united them, it opened their hearts. They became more willing to devote their time,” said Lovinsone. “You see it in the teenagers, you see it in the elderly, and you see it in these families. It’s just amazing to watch that transformation occur.” Family Promise of Brevard County needs a 15-passenger van, and eight more churches to commit to the effort of helping Brevard County’s homeless families. The organization will provide transportation to and from school, work, appointments, the day center and the churches. Families are selected through a referral program, with a requirement they are free from substance abuse and have no domestic violence problems. In addition to Faith Viera Lutheran Church, Episcopal Church of Our Savior in Palm Bay, Peace Lutheran Church of Palm Bay and Suntree United Methodist Church have committed to do their part to keep homeless families together. Capt. Eric Ciocher’s fishing forcast for July 2011 Inshore In the Banana and Indian River lagoons, watch for the tarpon, aka Silver King, to start showing up. These ish usually hang out in the deeper canals and channels of Intracoastal Waterway and sometimes have bull sharks shadowing them. Be sure to get out early because the bite slows as the sun gets high around noon. To target the tarpon, cut split-tail mullet for bait. Also, the redish, snook and sea trout should stay around throughout the summer months. Offshore In the Atlantic Ocean along

the Brevard coast, look for the kingish to continue to bite. Also you may ind some giant jacks running the beach looking for a quick meal. These ish are called “hour longs” because it takes about an hour to land one. The tarpon should stay strong along the Space Coast as well.

Surf In July anglers should see good catches of whiting, pompano and plenty of bonnethead sharks along Brevard County beaches. The top baits to use in the surf are sand leas, shrimp, and cut clams. Another alternative would be to cast small buck tail jigs VIERA VOICE Photo tipped with shrimp to catch Captain Eric Ciocher shows off a redfish he caught recently in these ish. the Indian River Lagoon.

If chosen to attend, families can select VPK programs at participating public schools, as well as private VPK providers, Head Start or child-care centers. Parents in the Viera and surrounding area can choose from Title I school, Golfview Elementary in Rockledge, or other sites such as the Viera Children’s Academy to Viera High School. According to Mona Potter, VPK Early Childhood Coordinator for Brevard Public Schools, research shows a high quality early learning such as VPK will give the child a strong foundation for a successful

early start in school which will have lasting beneits throughout the child’s school and educational experiences. Registering is a two step procedure where parents must irst obtain a Certiicate of Eligibility from the Early Learning Coalition (ELC) and then determine the location for the VPK program. VPK programs last the entire school year, every day and all day, as for any other student. Visit elcbrevard.org, or call the ELC at 321-6371800 ext. 2002 or 2006 to make an appointment in the Rockledge ofice. VV
