Sunshine brings smiles to Zoo BY MARIA SONNENBERG As a New York City kid, Bob Sunshine relished his weekly trips to the legendary Bronx Zoo. “My friends and I would catch a ride on the back of the trolley because we didn’t have the nickel for the fare,” the Viera resident said. Sunshine has come full circle, back to weekly visits to a zoo that begins with a B, as in Brevard Zoo, where the 91-year-old Sunshine reigns as one of the zoological park’s most beloved volunteers. “Bob brings sunshine to the zoo on the coldest, rainiest days whether it is his positive attitude or the stories of his life,” said Kathleen Nichols, the director of volunteer programs and internships. Nichols knows that if Sunshine says he is volunteering, he will be there, come rain or shine. “I’m always early, never late,” said Sunshine, who attributes his impeccable punctuality to a 20-year Army career that included service in the bitterly cold mountains of Korea. Every Wednesday, visitors experience plenty of Sunshine, as in Bob Sunshine, at the zoo, where he can usually be found at the “Lands of Change: Australia and Beyond” section near his furry buddies, the kangaroos. “They’re really very nice animals, very laid-back,” he said. The colorful feathered friends

Viera remains Brevard's boom town BY MIKE GAFFEY Viera continues to be a thriving economic engine for Brevard County, The Viera Company’s president said. Construction is ongoing across the 30,000-resident master-planned community, Todd Pokrywa said during a Melbourne Regional Chamber meeting at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center. “Business is booming in Viera,” Pokrywa said. “We are changing the Space Coast with masterful growth.” Home sales rose from 500 in 2019 to 732 in 2020, a 45 percent increase, Pokrywa said. Demand for new homes is so strong that Viera has implemented a lottery system for unbuilt residences in some communities. New businesses also are popping up as the growth of the space program and other high-tech, high-paying industries lure young families and millennials to Viera, he said. Viera’s building boom of 13,000 homes and more than 800 businesses on what used to be agricultural land owned by The Viera Company’s parent company A. Duda & Sons has earned the 33-year-old community a top-15 ranking in two organizations’ lists of the Top 50 Master-Planned Communities in the United States.

Despite the pandemic, Viera has continued its strong growth. The community is ranked among the top 15 in two prestigious organizations' lists.
“We’ve been climbing those rankings every year,” Pokrywa noted. By 2050, Viera’s population is expected to grow to 70,000 residents living east and west of Interstate 95, and the community anticipates
having more than 1,000 businesses offering 25,000 jobs, Pokrywa said. Three commercial hubs are emerging, Pokrywa said. Viera Town Center, just west of The Avenue Viera, already has two hotels and construction is underway

An Ace Hardware is being built, a wine bar and dentists’ and veterinarians’ offices are planned. “We're also in discussions with two hotels,” he said. “We’re under contract with a restaurant. We're talking to other restaurants.” Borrows West also will have a corporate office park fronting I-95, waterfront dining areas and a pedestrian trail along a large lake. The third economic hub is at Viera’s southern end along Pineda Causeway, where Brevard’s first Costco recently opened near the Lake Andrew Drive intersection. Hawks have worked hard to prepare for another run at state title BY CARL KOTALA
There’s no question the Viera Hawks feel like they’ve got some unfinished business to take care of this season … if they can get back to the state baseball semifinals. And the Hawks feel like they’ve got the club to do it. “We’ve got a lot of hardworking guys on our team,”
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
Viera junior catcher and North Carolina State commit Alex Sosa gives the Hawks leadership behind the plate and in the dugout as they attempt to get back to the state semifinals for the second year in a row.
senior shortstop Edian Espinal said. “We’re looking pretty good. We’ve never had speed and agility (workouts) and lifting in the fall before. I think that will help us a lot.” All that offseason work is evident just by looking at the Hawks. Junior catcher Alex Sosa, for instance, said he only added 5 to 10 pounds during the offseason, yet he looks much bigger. “I’ve been hitting the ball farther and harder, reacting quicker,” the North Carolina State commit said. “I think I speak for everybody. I’ve seen huge improvements already.” Viera might be bigger, stronger and faster this season, but the Hawks also have a strong pitching staff to help carry them along the way led by juniors Lucas Glendinning and Camden Wicker, along with sophomore Dylan Jordan. “I think our pitching will be pretty good,” Sosa said. “We actually have three guys who have touched 90. “… I’m excited. This might be the first year we have a lot of velo, too. Three guys in the 90s, a lot of high schools don’t

have that.” Juniors Ryan Lewis, Luke Campbell, Jack Malatino and transfer Fano Cruz will also see time on the mound. The team is looking for a closer, but as first-year head coach Brock Doty said: “We’ll figure that out as we go. It’s exciting. We’ve really worked hard on our pitching staff the last couple of years. I think people are going to be
impressed.” Doty, who takes over the program from his father, Bob, will certainly have the Hawks ready to go this season. Once again, Viera will play a challenging schedule designed to prepare the team for what it hopes will be another deep postseason run that ends up back in the state semifinals in Fort Myers. In addition to Cruz, the
Hawks have two more transfers in outfielder Sean Paulino and infielder Kyler Dwiggins, who could move into the leadoff spot with Espinal batting second. Sosa is locked in as the team’s starting catcher with Robbie Behrens, Adriel Torres and Dominic Leoni all battling for time at third base. Espinal will start at short with Dwiggins and Cole Smith (once he’s healthy) playing at second. At first base, Viera could have Glendinning, Cruz, Luke McDonough or Brennan Confreda. In the outfield, look for Campbell, Logan Keith, Malatino, Lewis, Cruz, Jordan and Paulino. “I think maybe more so this year than in any other year we’ve ever had, we’ll be able to insert somebody out there and there won’t be a drop off,” Doty said. “We’re pretty deep. We’ve got some athletes. We’ve been impressed with them so far. But, it doesn’t matter until you put the uniform on and play a game.” V V

Loaded with returners, Hawks are motivated to get back to final four BY CARL KOTALA
The Viera Hawks remember all too well how last season ended.
There was the euphoria of winning the regional championship, making it to the Class 6A state softball semifinals at the Legends Way
Ball Fields, and then as senior shortstop Anna Brait put it, having to walk down, “that stupid hill in Clermont” after a close loss to Winter Springs.

Well, with 14 returners — including seven seniors — it’s a safe bet to say the Hawks are eyeing another trip back to Clermont this season and a whole different result. “That’s something that we’re referencing a lot — the hill,” Viera coach Alex Breeden said. “We’re using it as fuel for the fire for this year.” That large group of returners already has given the Hawks a chance to get a jump on the new season. “We’re already so much further ahead than we were last year,” Brait said. “We made it so close last year. This year, we’re hitting the ground running right away. The new people, we gave them a little bit — get running, get going — and now we’re good.
“We’re in full practice mode from Day 3. So, we’re ready to go. We hit the ground running pretty fast.” Of Viera’s 14 returners, seven of them have committed to play at the next level — Sylvia Burroughs (Furman); Jace Jackson (Jackson State); Brait (Holy Cross); Hailey Mix (Florida Tech); Jaydin Gentile (Converse); Olivia Peters (Carleton) and junior pitcher Skylar Waggoner (Jacksonville). The other returning players include Maddie Ford, Alyssa Blood, Amaya Pitt, Hailey Rider, Mckenna Connelly, Giovanna Sardono and senior Delilah Datta. The

Holy Trinity softball has nice mixture of youth, experience BY CARL KOTALA The Holy Trinity Tigers will have to rely heavily on their three seniors and a lot of younger softball players this season … and that’s not a bad thing. “We have a lot of strong players who are younger and they’re really passionate about coming out here, so I think we’re going to have a really strong team,” senior outfielder Lauren Allison said. “They have a good bond with each other.” While Holy Trinity graduated three of its most productive hitters from last season, there will still be some pop in the Tigers’ lineup. “A lot of girls have gotten stronger,” senior first baseman Hailey Hirter said. “I know personally, I’m a power hitter. Cali (Perillo) is a power hitter. And we have a couple more girls who can get to that point throughout the season. “I don’t think (we’ll hit) as many home runs this year, because we had three pretty powerful home run hitters last year that we lost, but I still think we can still get really good, solid hits.” Allison, Hirter and infielder/outfielder Emma Binder are the seniors who are not only expected to

Considering the rest of the roster features a sophomore, five freshmen, three eighth graders and a seventh grader, that leadership will certainly come in handy. But on a team that will be buoyed by a handful of travel ball players, there certainly is a lot of talent on the roster. Foppiano used a nine iron to post the ace on the 143-yard, No. 7 hole as his tee shot flew into the cup. newcomers include Bianca Torres, Kaylah Comeau and Cordelia Mileski. Viera graduated one key player off of last year’s team, third baseman Morgan Mordas who was the Hawks’ only senior, a clutch player and their emotional leader. That role this year is being taken over by all of the seniors, four of which have been with the program since they were freshmen. Breeden said having that kind of experience with players who have bought into the program from an early age is akin to having a quartet of coaches on the field. Although some positions would appear set — Waggoner on the mound with Ford catching, Mix at first base and Brait at short — there still were some decisions to be made, particularly at second and third base. “We’ll just rotate pieces until we figure out who’s going to be the best for us to win,” Breeden said. One thing the Hawks know is that they’ll have an even
bigger target on their backs this season. “We’ve always faced a lot of adversity and Coach Breeden preaches daily that we can’t have a rollercoaster of emotions,” Jackson said. “We have to stay on the straight and narrow.” The goal, as always, is to get to Clermont and another shot at the final four. “I just think every day, we’re working to get better,” Jackson said. “We’re practicing hard, because we know that feeling. It just makes us more motivated.” V V

Viera High job fair offers students chance to learn about careers BY CARL KOTALA Not every high school student knows what they want to do when they graduate. In order to help, Viera High School will host its first job fair from 5 to 7 p.m. March 24 in the school’s gymnasium. The event is being coordinated by Viera Academy Director Kat Armstrong and Assistant Principal Heather Smith. It is expected to draw between 15 to 20 local businesses to provide information on potential jobs or career paths. Smith said the genesis of the job fair was a Youth Truth survey put out every year by Brevard Public Schools. More than 80 percent of Viera High School students took the survey and one of the areas it showed the school needed improvement in is college and career readiness. Armed with that information, Smith and Armstrong met to discuss what a potential job fair might look like while targeting the school’s junior and senior classes. “I’ve talked to a lot of kids and surveyed them outside of the Youth Truth survey and really, they don’t know what to do after high school,” Smith said. “Even if
they’re going to college, they don’t necessarily know what they want to major in, or what kind of opportunities there are. “So, it’s really about trying to help them and put them in contact with our community to find some connections and career paths — find interest in something.” This is one of those community events that can only help all of those involved. Armstrong and Smith are actively looking for more local businesses to take part in Viera’s job fair. Those interested can contact Armstrong at Armstrong. Kathereen@Brevardschools. org. “Even if it’s just to talk about the career,” Smith said. “Maybe they don’t have job openings, but if they want to inform kids about different career paths (or training) within their business or company. “We’re trying to have our career and technical education department come out and talk because they partner with a lot of businesses within Brevard County to provide internships to all students. But really, we’re just trying to get kids in front of people to learn about different types of careers.” V V

Award. “One of our old coaches who was there said that it’s pretty impactful because nobody in this region has got the Ranatra Fusca award (at the Space Coast Regional) in 20 years,” Viera High senior Taylor Weiss said. “It was pretty cool. We got it for our vehicle. You can thank Ryan for that. He’s pretty smart.” Ryan would be senior Ryan Luciani, who formed the school’s Odyssey of the Mind Club along with Weiss and senior Caroline Sylvan when they were freshmen. Other club members include senior Kayla Beigh; senior Leen Abu-Ammour; junior Stephanie Paquet and sophomore Stephanie Whiteman. Viera teacher Jim Gentile is the club’s sponsor. The Odyssey of the Mind competition uses open-ended problems given to students to problem solve using their abilities and their creativity. Most of the Viera High team members have been competing since at least their freshman year, though some — like Luciani — go back to their elementary school days. “I like the creative side of it,” Weiss said. “I like

being able to make things and coming up with outof-the-box ideas. I usually end up writing the script for whatever team I’m on because I like writing that kind of thing. I write scripts for theater all the time for the class. “This is a way to do that, but not for an assignment. Most of the time, I’m with my friends that I’ve been doing it with for years.” Competitions consist of two areas — a long-term project and a spontaneous problem where students have to come up with their answers in a matter of minutes. Weiss said she, Luciani and Whiteman went to the world competition a few years ago and noticed that all the long-term projects

that placed involved openminded, out-of-the-box ideas that people wouldn’t think of. So, when one of the prompts was a vehicle problem that involved an escape room, they started brainstorming. “We wanted to look at the escape room in a different direction,” Luciani said. “The way the problem guide was reading … It was kind of like a commercial escape room where, OK, here’s a room and you have a set amount of time to escape from it. “We were like, OK, what are some things you can escape? One of us thought, what if they’re trying to escape their life because they don’t like it?” What came out of that was an eight-minute skit on “Escaping the Mundaneness of Life” set in the Industrial Revolution era with a mix of women’s activism as well. The vehicle in this case was a rat that helps the main character in what Weiss described as a “fantastical daydream.” The state competition is scheduled for March 12 at the Orange County Convention Center.V V

Viera High School Hawks Battalion enjoys JROTC Ball BY BETTY PORTER Camaraderie, music, dinner, dancing, military tradition and a keynote address that elicited a standing ovation were all part of Viera High School’s JROTC annual Ball experience this year. The gala event, organized by the Viera JROTC Booster Club, was held at the Indian River Colony Club on Jan. 29 for the 199 proud cadets who make up the Viera High School Hawks Battalion U.S. Army JROTC program and their guests. It was much anticipated and perhaps made more special since last year’s Ball was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ballroom was filled with gala décor, candle centerpieces on each table, every chair covered in starched white linen and ribbons, a long table lined with bowls of all kinds of colorful candy and bags which each attendee could fill themselves and take home at the end of the evening. In addition, there was an equally impressive table set up with decorated cupcakes baked by Viera High School Booster Club
volunteers. Upon entering the ballroom, Cadet Maj. Christopher Hoffman, a senior, said, “This is amazing, stunning. I am so glad to be here, and to have been a part of the program that has made me a better person.” Hoffman, who already has a private pilot’s license, said he is going to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University after graduating from Viera High School to pursue a career as a VIERA VOICE Betty Porter commercial pilot. It was followed by the Posting of the Colors and the reciting of the Cadet Creed, led by Cadet Maj. Hoffman. Cadet 1st Lt. Daniel Bogle gave the invocation. Before dinner was served, VIPs in attendance were recognized and special guests were announced by retired Army Lt. Col. Tim Thomas. The senior instructor started the JROTC program at Viera High

they couldn’t afford pork products, they had to settle for beef brisket and substituted potatoes for cabbage. Here, the humble yet stalwart cabbage isn’t playing backup to the beef and without its appearance this dish would never be the same. Cabbage is truly one of the unsung heroes in the veggie arsenal. It shouldn’t be forgotten or given the pass over since it warrants a much-deserved ode due to its affordability and adaptability in so many dishes. However, most cooks shy away from its putative anonymity, as the sheer size of the vegetable is a beast. Try making corned beef and cabbage and be forewarned — the mouthwatering results will make it a staple in your kitchen around this time of year. V V

He was kidnapped at an early age, suffered many hardships but, after becoming a priest, he went to Ireland and converted many pagans to Catholicism, much to the displeasure of the Druids. He was never canonized, but he rightly earned his place in heaven and in the hearts of the Irish. Also, don’t be fooled because Irish folk don’t eat corned beef and cabbage to celebrate St. Patrick. And, it’s not a tradition in Ireland. New York City was a melting pot of cultures and the first Irish settlers wanted something that reminded them of their beloved country. Since

The 12th annual Space Coast Conquers Big Shave will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 19 at The Avenue Viera in Central Park. “More children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other disease — in fact, more than many other childhood diseases combined,” according to stbaldricks.org. “Every two minutes, a child is diagnosed with cancer” worldwide. Begun in 2005 as an independent organization, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation is the largest non-government funder of childhood cancer research grants today. Since 2005, $312 million has been raised by volunteers for research grant funding. In the 1950s, children with cancer had only a 10-percent survival rate. Today, that number has inverted for many of the more common childhood cancers, yet those who survive are still at increased risk into their adult years. “The medications that cure them are also a toxic assault, causing damage to their developing bodies that affects the rest of

their lives,” according to stbaldricks.org. “A recent study shows that because of the treatments they had as kids, by the time they’re 50, more than 99 percent of survivors have a chronic health problem and 96 percent have severe or lifethreatening conditions.” The name of the organization is not based upon a saint but instead a portmanteau word combining bald and Patrick. The well-known headshaving events, used to create awareness and raise money, often coincide with St. Patrick’s Day in March. This year’s goal is $200,000. So far, $7,998 has
been raised as of the middle of February. Tom Niedert, the coordinator for the Viera event, said that $2.8 million dollars has been raised in total during the past 12 years. Niedert is a Brevard County District Fire Chief and also team captain for the Brevard’s Best team. Fifteen barbers from local barber shops will be on hand to shave the heads of willing participants. “It (the shaving) has nothing to do with making hair for children,” Niedert said. “The shaving is symbolic, to be there for the kids going through chemotherapy.” Head shaving is not mandatory, however. “You can go and have fun and donate some money. It’s a family-oriented event,” Niedert said. Entertainment will include a parade, a disc jockey, the honor guard, bagpipes, a bounce house and face painting. Mindy from Mindy & Company of Lite Rock 99.3 will emcee the event. Donations for the past two years have dwindled due to the pandemic, and it is hoped that more funds can be raised this year. VyStar Credit Union expands into Brevard with Suntree, Titusville offices BY MIKE GAFFEY
VyStar Credit Union is opening one of its first two Brevard County branch offices in Suntree. Construction is proceeding on the Jacksonville-based credit union’s branch office on North Wickham Road in front of Pineda Landings. Another office at 1809 Cheney Highway in Titusville is set to open March 31, said Lysa Barbano, VyStar’s senior vice president and market president of Central Florida. No opening date has been scheduled for the Suntree office, she said The not-for-profit, member-owned credit union founded in 1952 is in the midst of expanding in Central Florida, with new branches having opened during the past 2½ years in downtown Orlando, Oviedo, Sanford, Mount Dora and Winter Garden, Barbano said. Two more branches are set to open this year in The Villages and Lake Mary. With more than $13 billion in assets, 800,000 members, 2,000 employees, 63 full-service branches and 18 high school branches throughout Florida and Georgia, VyStar is the second-largest credit

union headquartered in Florida and the 14th-largest nationwide. “We want to be available to more members across all of Central Florida, so we're looking at how we can expand in a way that makes sense from downtown Orlando kind of in a radius all the way out to the coast,” Barbano said. “We want to be available and have as many people have access to our services as possible. So,

we’re continuing to look at what makes the most sense in terms of location where markets are growing and people are working and need to have access to what we offer.” What sets VyStar apart from other credit unions is its philosophy to “do good and bank better,” Barbano said. “That is our new tagline, but it isn't just a tagline,” she said. “It is something that
we live every day. We work to provide extraordinary experiences for every member that we work with and help them with all of the financial services that they might need, everything that might be available at other financial institutions: from savings and checking accounts to retirement plans, business services, investment services, mortgages and business products. So that’s not perhaps what’s most unique, but the way that we provide that level of service is.” The Suntree branch will offer walk-in and drivethrough service as well as ATM access. Barbano said VyStar is committed to supporting the communities it serves, and the company already is reviewing proposals to decide which Brevard County organizations to assist. The company is well known in Jacksonville, where its name adorns the city’s 15,000-seat arena. VyStar also is presenting Jax

In Orlando, VyStar also is the official credit union of the Solar Bears hockey team. “We are getting our name out,” Barbano said. “You might have seen some of our local advertising in Central Florida right now. We’re just trying to get people to know us and love us as much as our current members already do.” Check out vystarcu.org for more information. V V

Dr. Kaitlin Donovan holds a rendering of what will be her new location at Borrows West in Viera.
Dentist’s office, wine bar coming to Borrows West BY MIKE GAFFEY Two more businesses are opening in Viera’s new Borrows West development. Sundance Family Dentistry, a full-service general and cosmetic dental facility owned by Dr. Kaitlin Donovan, is building an office in the development. Donovan said she was looking forward to the move to a new larger facility to provide for the growing number of patients. “It’s going to allow us to grow and continue to serve even more of Brevard
County,” Donovan said. “We’re excited to have our new facility to give excellent care.” For wine fanciers, Venezia Wine Veranda is expected to open later this year on about 1.3 acres on Hennessey Place just south of the newly opened Chick-fil-A restaurant. Plans call for a 6,000-square-foot, two-story building with a kitchen and wine and gift shop on the first floor and seating with more than 100 self-pouring wine dispensers on the second floor. “I wanted to create a rooftop vibe,” said Rich
Abbruscato of RNK Viera, Inc. “It will be a very nice view all the way around.” The second floor seating will look over nice landscaping. Abbuscato could not yet give a tentative opening date because he was still in the permitting process, which he said was near completion. Located southwest of Viera Boulevard and Interstate-95, Borrows West is a commercial, residential and retail development planned on about 115 acres in central Viera. The project is planned

Artwalk set to promote Brevard Zoo’s aquarium BY SUE DEWERFF
Aquarium Artwalk Project is set to help promote the Brevard Zoo’s initiative to build an aquarium. The zoo’s $100 million fundraising initiative for the construction of the aquarium complex at Port Canaveral is now in full swing with hopes of breaking ground in 2024. Since the initial announcement in 2018, local volunteer organizations have joined the effort to help support and promote the large project that will be located along the Banana River, just west of State Road A1A. In 2019, after participating in a community engagement session hosted by the zoo, a group of residents passionate about the arts, formed the Aquarium Artwalk Project. After nearly two years of planning, the all-volunteer group is set to launch its month-long event, beginning March 5, to help promote the future Aquarium. The countywide exhibit, held in numerous Brevard County libraries from Merritt Island to Melbourne Beach, will display the aquariumthemed artwork from more than 50 local artists. The juried works that

High-tech Frank — a 3D printer — builds houses BY LINDA JUMP Frank, Gary and Mary can build a home in 50 work hours, just adding water at the site. Space Coast business Apis Cor hopes its robotic system will revolutionize the way homes are built not only locally, but nationally, globally and eventually on the moon and Mars. “It seems like science fiction, but it’s happening now,” said Trevor Ragno, the director of construction technology. He said an onsite proprietary robotics system prints 3-D walls with the electrical, plumbing and mechanical components installed. “Our mission is to advance affordable and available housing. … Today, there’s a shortage of five million houses in the U.S.,” Apis Cor founder and CEO Anna Cheniuntai of Melbourne said. The firm has opened what they call “the world’s first showroom for 3D printed homes” at The Avenue Viera. There, at least for now, contractors and home buyers can view Frank, a 2,900-pound machine that prints 3D exterior and interior walls using extrusion of a proprietary mixture that Cheniuntai said is a third stronger, a third cheaper, and nine times faster than current concrete house construction. Gary is a mixer that pumps their secret concrete with additives, and
Mary is a smart truck that delivers Frank and Gary to a construction site in a vacuum-sealed container. After a 30-minute setup, the system produces what company officials claim are better insulated, stronger cinder blocks requiring only two workers. Contractors can lease the system starting this fall. Cheniuntai said Frank won’t eliminate jobs. “There are 400,000 (U.S.) positions in the construction business unfilled, in part because of COVID and a huge gap in what we need to build.” Apis Cor already has received 150 requests to build the first spec or custom-designed homes, with construction to begin next year. A one-story, 1,800-square-foot home with two bedrooms and two baths, garage space, terrace and 3D printed outdoor furniture starts at $360,000. An upgraded two-story home with two-car garage and rooftop observation deck starts at $470,000. “This is the way they’ll be building houses in 20 years,” said Scott Elliott of Suntree, the CFO of the company through Strategic Partners. “Shelter is a basic need,” Ragno said. “Home construction is expensive and basically ineffective, and construction work is dirty, difficult and dangerous. Construction waste is our leading polluter. The printed walls can be cut or drilled the same as concretemasonry units.”

Apis Cor built the world's largest 3D printed building — the two-story, 6,889 square foot Dubai Municipal Building in 2019. It is listed in the "Guinness Book of World Records." The building is 31 feet tall and was built on site without any covering.
Apis Cor was founded in 2014 in Boston and it moved its headquarters to the Space Coast three years ago.
The company recently was approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission to offer shares on the stock
market to both accredited and non-accredited investors. For information, go to apis-cor.com. V V

“Open and honest communication concerning the patient’s desired healthcare interests are paramount to me and the mission of my practice”
The Suntree Rotary Club recently awarded $14,000 in donations from its annual fundraiser to three local organizations. During its regular meeting Jan. 28, the club invited representatives from the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida, Operation La Paz and the Central Brevard Sharing Center to receive donations raised during The Great Tastes of Suntree on Oct. 23. The Rotary event featured 15 local restaurants that offered samples of their tastiest foods to more than 400 attendees. Erin Harvey, the development officer of the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida, accepted a check for $5,000 for ongoing work at Temple Terrace in Melbourne. The Boys & Girls Club keeps children ages 6 to 18 safe by providing a positive environment where they can learn, play and grow. At little to no cost to the family, the clubs provide members with academic support, extracurricular activities and positive adult role models in an effort to break the cycle of poverty. According to the club’s website, there currently are 11,144 members being served at 36 clubs in Orange,
Osceola, Seminole, Brevard, Lake and Nassau counties. Some 92 percent of children attending qualify for free or reduced lunches and 60 percent live in single-parent homes. Woody McDaniel, president of Operation La Paz, accepted $7,000 for a school that his nonprofit organization is renovating near La Paz, Honduras. This school is adding more space, more windows and a new roof, and it is getting running water and electricity for the first time. David Brubaker, the president and CEO of the Central Brevard Sharing Center, Inc., accepted a check for $2,000. The center provides shelter during cold weather for the homeless, a nutritious and well-balanced meal through their community kitchen and a food pantry. The center has a thrift shop which offers clothing and household goods. Suntree Rotary President JoAnn Meaker said the club has supported the Boys & Girls Club at Temple Terrace and Operation La Paz for a number of years, but added the Sharing Center as a third charity to assist this year. “Every so often we come up with a third and we ask our club members what they would support and then we vote on it,” Meaker said. On Valentine’s Day, the GFWC Viera Woman’s Club helped Brevard County Sheriff's Office deputies make scary situations more bearable for young children. The club presented BCSO Cpl. John Martinez and Cpl. Ashley Jennings with 40 homemade Teddy bears to give to children who have been a victim or a witness to a crime or a frightening incident. “Teddy bears can be a great source of comfort for a child who is frightened or traumatized,” Jeanne Caverly, the club’s chairman, Communications & PR, said in a statement. “The bears are available for deputies in BCSO’S five units to carry in their vehicles.” Club members will continue to make and donate more bears as needed, Caverly added. Attendees of the Feb. 14 meeting also heard from Jeff Kiel, president
and CEO of Promise in Brevard, a nonprofit organization that provides affordable, independent housing with amenities for adults with cognitive and physical disabilities. One of only 57 in the U.S., the facility houses 125 residents between the ages of 21 to 62 in its 52 apartments. Attendees also brought one gently used article of clothing to be donated to Promise Treasures Thrift Shoppe, which provides employment and vocational training for residents of Promise in Brevard. Viera Woman’s Club is part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), an international women’s organization. The club empowers women to support the community through volunteerism, charitable fundraising and civic engagement, as well as educational and social activities. In all, he has 35 movie and TV series credits. “I’ve worked with a lot of A listers, such as Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg and Bruce Willis,” Mederos said. “I got back into the car business in 2020. I was originally supposed to go to Orlando, but I fell in love with Melbourne,” he said. He now works for Porsche Audi Mercedes as a buyer for the East Coast inventory. In California, Krista Mederos owned a business for 15 years as a hairdresser. “It was very heartbreaking to leave,” she said. “I had clients from the days when I first started.” The family also loves their dogs and their signature breed. “We’ve always had a French Bulldog,” Krista Mederos said. “Our first one passed away at about 10 (years of age) and we were completely devastated.” After the passing of their beloved pet, they
brought home Bambi, but it was obvious that she needed a mate, so they got Bandit to keep her company. The two dogs are one month apart in age and are inseparable, according to Krista. Bambi and Bandit had their first litter of five in California. The family kept two of the puppies, a male and a female. At the end of 2021, Bambi had her second litter of six puppies, which are now living in loving homes in the area. The family resides in Trasona Cove. George Mederos moved to Florida in July, followed by Krista and Lucy in September 2021. “We love how family oriented the neighborhood is,” Krista Mederos said. “Halloween here was off the charts. People go all out with decorations and everyone participates.” “I was greeted with open arms,” George Mederos said. “One of the neighbors here brought a homemade quiche and cookies. Coming here and feeling so welcome, that was kind of like the icing on the cake. I tell my friends back in California that I feel like I’m living in a bubble.” V V

We thoroughly clean the surface, then apply an eco-friendly product which bonds to the surface on a molecular level. This invisible barrier fills in the microscopic pores, peaks and valleys in the stone or glass leaving behind an ultra-durable, stain-resistant, and bacteria free surface.

SOIRL continues quest to clean lagoon
The Space Coast’s Leading Chamber for Top Business Leaders
What is the 2022 SOIRL Plan? An important choice made to Save Our Indian River Lagoon (SOIRL). In 2016, voters overwhelmingly approved a 10-year, ½-cent sales tax to fund the restoration of the Indian River Lagoon. The initial plan is updated every year to make sure that it is based on the latest science and does the best job possible by requiring projects be selected based on cost per pound of pollution removed. The plan has identified 330 projects (more than 50 completed) that will reduce pollution (nitrogen and phosphate) in the lagoon by more than 1 million pounds a year. And this year, it adds new types based on recent evidence. The plan has always targeted leaking septic

systems, stormwater runoff and removal of muck coating the lagoon bottom, as well as upgrading sewage treatment facilities. But, recent studies have shown that pollution also is coming from package plants (mini-sewage plants at some trailer parks) and leaky lateral sewer pipes. So, this year’s revision adds projects to test the effectiveness of controlling these sources. It also adds mechanical harvesting of aquatic vegetation in place of spraying with glyphosate, which causes the dead vegetation to rot and pollute.
Last year, it added projects to begin restoring clams and that seems to be going well. Despite the impacts of COVID, the SOIRL fund increased by nearly 11 percent last year from $489 million through 10 years to $542 million. Some of this will be used to offset the effects of inflation in scheduled projects, but some is being used for new projects. A core reason that the plan improves from year to year is that each plan and each project is reviewed by the external Citizens Oversight Committee. As many as 14 volunteers ask probing questions to ensure that each project will make a difference. For information, check out brevardfl.gov/ SaveOurLagoon/Home and HelpTheLagoon.org. VV

Deforestation depleting Earth's ability to breathe properly Sitting next to my dad in the quiet of his hospital room, the sound of breathing fills the air. Breathe in; breathe out — and repeat. The BPAP machine dictates the rhythm. I have never thought that much about breathing, something we automatically do all the time. But, breathing is one of the most essential functions our body performs for us. It fills our blood stream with oxygen so that every single cell receives some. It removes waste gasses such as carbon dioxide from the blood. It helps to keep our temperature just right. Breathing makes life possible. Unfortunately, way too often we take the basics for granted and get careless to the point of jeopardizing our own existence. It is all over the news. Deforestation has increased in the Amazon. “Amazon deforestation in Brazil hits its worst level in 15 years,” reports NPR. “Rainforest lost 10,476 square kilometers between August 2020 and July 2021,” headlines The Guardian. As reported by “Britannica,” known as “the world’s richest and mostvaried biological reservoir,
BEYOND the CURB Marcia Booth

containing several million species of insects, plants, birds, and other forms of life, many still unrecorded by science,” the Amazon Rainforest spans 6.7 million kilometers, which is twice the size of India, and houses 10% of the world’s biodiversity. Also called the lungs of the earth, the Amazon Rainforest is responsible for the sequestration of a high volume of carbon. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), “the Amazon contains 90 to 140 billion metric tons of carbon (and) the release of even a portion of which would accelerate global warming significantly.” While carbon is stored, oxygen gets produced and temperatures get regulated. The Amazon Rainforest is genuinely the lungs of the planet breathing for all of us. In a 2008 study, Nepstad et al concluded that “currently, land conversion and deforestation in the Amazon release up to 0.5
billion metric tons of carbon per year, not including emissions from forest fires, thus rendering the Amazon an important factor in regulating global climate.” With the increase in deforestation, that becomes a great concern to all who depend on breathing. And what can be more important than breathing? According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, “The most common pressures causing deforestation and severe forest degradation are (animal) agriculture, unsustainable forest management, mining, infrastructure projects and increased fire incidence and intensity.” Add to that list crop production, illegal
logging, land invasion and new settlements and we get a picture of the threats against one of the most important regions of the planet. With the increase in global consumption of meat and the higher demand for animal feed that follows, demand for pastureland as well as cropland are on the high and account for about 90% of the destruction of the Amazon. The use of palm oil in many products, ranging from chocolate to shampoo, also represents a threat as more and more land gets cleared to make way for palm oil production. To change those trends, we can all chip in: reduce (or stop) meat consumption; read product labels more
often — you will be surprised by some of the ingredients found in your favorite products; look for products made with sustainable palm oil (and there is an app for that — cmzoo.org/ conservation/orangutanspalm-oil/sustainable-palmoil-shopping-app/. Whatever we decide to do has an impact and consequences. Our body teaches us that; and so do forests and nature. Breathe. Let go. Make amends. Do your best. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure. — based on Oprah Winfrey’s quote. VV Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@RecycleBrevard.org

Popular Indiafest celebrates 25th anniversary in March BY MIKE GAFFEY Indiafest turns 25 this year, and the annual celebration of Indian culture, history and traditions has special events planned to mark its silver anniversary. Presented by Suntreebased Manav Mandir Hindu Temple, the popular family festival returns Saturday, March 5, and Sunday, March 6, at Wickham Park, 2500 Parkway Drive in Melbourne. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. March 5 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 6. “To celebrate the silver jubilee, we have added more exciting things in what is already an exciting and
rewarding festival,” said Nina Gadodia, Indiafest founder and chairperson. Started in 1996, the unique festival has become one of Brevard County’s most anticipated annual events. Visitors can enjoy traditional Indian cuisine and an Indian cooking demonstration, cultural shows, dance performances, music, food trucks, vendors, children’s activities, Henna tattoo booths, arts and crafts, bonfires, games, a Yoga presentation and raffle prizes. What sets Indiafest apart from other India festivals is its different annual themes that showcase unique

aspects of India, Gadodia said. This year’s theme is “Around India.” To mark the festival’s 25th year, the nonprofit, cultural organization plans several new features, including an experience that recreates a remote desert village in India. The special event will be presented during extended hours from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. “Even when you go to India as a tourist — it’s such a beautiful country and there’s so much to see — that you don’t end up going to the rural areas,” Gadodia said. “So it will be a treat for all the people here to see the interior of India.” The festival’s team is committed to giving back to the community. Since its beginning, Indiafest has raised $1.14 million for local charities and national and international disaster relief. This year, the Indiafest team hopes to start a $100,000 endowment scholarship with Eastern Florida State College to help deserving students. “In 2013, we did a $100,000 endowment at FIT,” Gadodia said. “At that time we thought of helping Eastern Florida when we could comfortably do so.
So we promised them that we’d do that for our 25th anniversary.” Tickets are $7 for adults

Former SpaceX engineers design smart cushions for wheelchairs BY SUE DEWERFF
Approximately half of the more than three million wheelchair users in the U.S. will at some point develop pressure sore injuries. Viera-based Kalogon Smart Cushions founder and CEO Tim Balz and his team of former SpaceX engineers began their quest more than a year ago to create a cushion designed to alleviate pain by redistributing
pressure points. It ultimately accelerates healing while delivering long-lasting comfort for wheelchair users. Last month, the company announced it will begin selling the smart wheelchair cushions nationally. The Kalogon cushion uses a patent-pending air cell technology that can be adapted to an individual wheelchair user’s specific needs via an application for

iOS and Android wireless devices. It detects how a user is sitting and re-distributes pressure to encourage blood flow, reduce pain and decrease ulcers and sores. After receiving nearly $200,000 in financial support from Seed Funders based in Orlando, Kalogon’s smart cushions debut came after Balz’s list of successful wheelchair innovations. It started during his high school days when he began refurbishing electric chairs, and founded a nonprofit called Freedom Chairs. Balz, who earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, first worked at a design firm in 2013 on a track-based wheelchair project, and was named an inventor for that company’s patent. While in college, he entered an internship with Intel, where he helped lead the design of a connected wheelchair device called Internet of Things. It was during this time he founded Kalogon. After accepting a position with SpaceX in 2017, Balz and his wife, Sarah, moved to Viera. “I continued to believe that the eldercare market was grossly underserved,

and was determined to find a way to help solve many of the challenges, specifically in pressure sore prevention. I decided to make Kalogon my main focus in the fall of 2020.” Balz and his team began garnering feedback from senior-living facilities, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers to better understand the impact of pressure-induced injuries. “If we can help solve the challenges people using wheelchairs face
in partnership with people of all abilities, then we are doing our job correctly — from ideation to manufacturing and distribution,” Balz said. Feedback from early adopters has been positive according to Balz. Reports from Kalogon’s Early Adopter Program studies indicated that wheelchair users were able to sit twice as long using the Smart

It's time again to spring ahead — March 13 Daylight saving time, or summer time in some countries, allows us to enjoy the daylight of the summer months. By springing our clocks forward at 2 a.m. March 13, we sacrifice normal sunrise times in order to have evening daylight last an hour longer. In the United States, daylight saving time
originally was implemented during World War I and World War II in order to take advantage of longer daylight hours and save energy for the war production. After the wars, some cities chose to observe while others went back to standard time. In 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act to standardize daylight saving time across the country.
Farmers don’t enjoy the loss of the morning daylight hours when they usually do most of their work.
Extra daylight means that we can do more with our day. Go to parks, beaches, and most importantly, shop.

Cushion compared to traditional inflatable products. “Many early users are disabled veterans and we have distributed some of our first smart cushions to the local VA facilities. They have also been able to get the cushions covered through insurance,” Balz said. John Miller, who has used a wheelchair for about 18 years and was one of the early testers and is featured on the company’s website, was quoted in a recent press release as saying, “he’s digging in his garden again and is able to visit his grandchildren for the first time,” thanks to the cushions. The smart cushions are being assembled locally by disabled workers in a collaboration with the nonprofit Brevard Achievement Center of Brevard. After meeting with BAC’s president and CEO Amar Patel, Balz said he quickly learned that the connection could be the perfect match. “We are very excited for this new partnership, and for Kalogon to grow,” Patel said. “We know that the assembly of this innovative product here will create opportunities that will instill pride and showcase
the skills of our employees with disabilities, while creating a cushion that is helping injured veterans and other wheelchair users across the country.” Kalogon’s Smart Cushions are custom made to each individual’s specifications and needs, and are priced starting at $2,000.
