Light Up parade to beam with brilliance BY CHRIS BONANNO

As part of what has become a Thanksgiving weekend tradition, Viera will once light up at 6 p.m. Nov. 24 with the sixth annual Light Up Viera Holiday Parade. The parade, put on by the Viera Community Institute, which is the nonprofit arm of The Viera Company, will feature more than 1,000 participants according to event coordinator Laurie Widzgowski. It also will have 16 floats, five marching bands and more than 100 costume-wearing participants. The floats and participants will illuminate and fit with the spirit of the parade. The parade route will begin at Viera High School and traverse 2.7 miles, according to Widzgowski. The route will see participants turn onto Veterans Way before

Bad guys beware as K9 stars put on quite a show BY CHRIS BONANNO

Hundreds turned out at Cocoa High School to watch law enforcement personnel and their K9 companions compete for pride and prizes as the inaugural Space Coast Police K-9 Competition was held Oct. 15 at Cocoa High School. Cocoa Police Department officers Chris Hattaway and Dan Rhodes helped to make the event a reality with Hattaway indicating that he

liked the idea of getting the K9s more visibility. “The only time that people actually get to see the K9s work is on like live TV or on “Cops,” Hattaway said. “They never get to see their capabilities so to put on an event, show everybody what they’re paying for … what’s the value of the dog that they’re getting to have a K9 work for their agency?” The event featured 26 officers and their K9 companions in action as

they attempted to navigate an obstacle course that had competitors performing tasks such as running through a bus, crawling through a tube and navigating a “mystery maze” type of apparatus. “My favorite is that I get to do it with my best friend and show people the bond that we can have with our dogs and then also have fun out there also and show the community that Patrick Air Force Base would kill it,” said Frances Hopfer who competed with her K9 Miki, a German Shepherd. The first-place winner Joseph Nault of the Air Force with his K9 Ivar, a Belgian Malinois, also earned a Diamondback patrol rifle, which Hattaway said was valued at $750. Devin Lewis of the Air Force with his K9 Pieter, a Dutch Shepherd, finished second. Caleb Pinkham of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office with his Belgian Malinois, Baxter, finished third. “The most fun about being out there is just having the entire community of law enforcement come together, compete with their dogs, have fun and especially letting the civilian know that it’s not always just work. We also get to play with the dogs as well and relate to the community,” Lewis said. Following the obstacle course competition, 21 of the 26 officer/dog teams competed in a “hard dog/ fast dog competition” which saw K9s chasing down Cocoa Police Department Lt. Tony Marchica, who was simulating running as a “bad guy” while dressed in

Tyler Glenn and K9 Chase, a Belgian Malinois, took first place in the hard dog competition. Coming in second was Pinkham and Baxter, while BCSO’s Rick Nelson with his Belgian Malinois, Thor, took third place. Scarecrows highlight seventh annual Viera Voice Harvest Festival BY CHRIS BONANNO Patrons visiting The Avenue Viera on October 20 got to celebrate everything that is fall as the Viera Voice held its seventh annual Harvest Festival. The event featured, among other attractions, a pumpkin patch, zucchini racing, hay bale horses, face painting, a fun fall photo area and live music courtesy of the Penny Creek Band. Of course, one of the highlights of the event was the opportunity to see all 34 scarecrows that were made by local businesses in one area as part of Viera’s “Scarecrow Stroll, also sponsored by the Voice, held from Oct. 3 to 17. Each business constructed a creative scarecrow as part of a competition where prizes were given to the winners in categories that included most popular, judge’s choice, scariest, most whimsical and best-themed. Among the scarecrows submitted were designs such as “El Mariachi Loco” by El Leoncito and “Centerita” from the Centre Pointe Apartments. They, along with the other 32 scarecrows, were available for purchase during a silent auction held at the event. All proceeds from the auction were donated to Family Promise of Brevard. “Bringing all the scarecrows together is my favorite. To see all of them in one place since they have been out on the tour,” said Jill Blue, publisher of the Voice. “It makes for a nice display where people can see them in person and stand next to them and take

selfies and think about buying them. It’s really cool.” Autumn House, an assisted living and memory care facility located off Spyglass Hill Road, submitted “Maui,” a scarecrow built and based on a character from the Disney movie “Moana.” The scarecrow, which Joy Hines, the facility admissions and marketing director, said involved help from “at least” 25 people associated with the facility, won an award for being the scariest in the competition. “We are thrilled,” Hines said. “Our residents had a blast building Maui along with our activities department. It’s a wonderful experience and it’s wonderful to be in the Viera community.” A full list of winners from the Scarecrow Stroll can be found on the Voice’s Facebook page. There also was a costume contest for children with participants in different age groups sporting elaborate and impressive costumes that included a pirate, a ghost and many others that undoubtedly made judges’ jobs very difficult. “I’m having a very good time,” said 8-year-old Hannah Hubble of Viera, who won first place in her age division’s contest for her Pippi Longstocking costume.

Festival of Trees returns for 34th consecutive year BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER

Sparkling Christmas trees, ornament-accented wreaths and visits with Santa Claus usher in the 34th annual Festival of Trees, sponsored by the Junior League of South Brevard Inc. The event is a community fundraiser to support the league’s various programs during the year throughout the area. “The Festival of Trees is quite a tradition for the Junior League of South Brevard,” said Sherry Jensen, a league member who works with the festival. “The event highlights Christmas trees

and wreaths donated by the Brevard community and the Junior League. Decorated by the donors, each donor selects his own theme for the wreath or tree. There are table-top trees, designer trees 6- and 9-feet tall and wreaths.” “Over the years, a variety of different themes have emerged including traditional Christmas, a beach theme, children, a peppermint tree, dog theme, trees around the world and classics with lots of different colors,” Jensen said. “A real variety is played across the trees. The trees are sold by

silent auction, so at the end of the day some people will be taking home their trees.” In addition to viewing the trees, the event includes a holiday marketplace offering a variety of local vendors selling gourmet foods, clothing, unique gift offerings, a woodworker who has traditionally attended each year and the league’s own poinsettia sale. “Poinsettias come from the same supplier as used by Disney, so the plants are high quality and beautiful,” Jensen said. “We have many repeat customers. The plants will be ready for pickup on Nov. 27.”

The program falls under the umbrella in the kids in the kitchen program that we have through the year,” Jensen said. “This one runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on site for 25-minute cooking classes. Parents can sign up on the website. “Extremely popular is the range of raffle prizes to win different packages,” Jensen said. “Prizes include a session with a local photographer, restaurant gift certificates, tickets for different things in the Brevard community.” This annual event is planned throughout the summer and funds help

Local meteorologist proves to be the ultimate team player BY CHRIS BONANNO

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne found himself having to make life-saving decisions during Hurricane Michael. Will Ulrich, who normally works at the NWS office in Melbourne, was asked to work from the National Weather Service in Jacksonville. It was positioned to take control of forecasting for the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, whose coverage area includes the area of the Florida Panhandle where Michael made landfall as well as portions of southeast Georgia and southwest Georgia. “It was becoming more apparent that on Sunday the possibility of the storm turning into a major hurricane, the threat was increasing along the northern Gulf Coast,” Ulrich said. “Tallahassee office, one of the National Weather Service offices in Florida, knew that they were going to be in the crosshairs of the storm. So they requested support from the headquarters. And, as part of that, I was sent up to Jacksonville to provide backup support ’cause they didn’t want to necessarily send me to the office that was in the path of the storm. They

want to put you in an office that allows to back up the threatened office in case they go down.” Ulrich volunteered to go up to Jacksonville, which was serving as Tallahassee’s primary backup office. Sure enough, the Tallahassee office lost the ability to do its job because of the storm and that’s where Ulrich stepped in. “During my time up there, I took over responsibility for Tallahassee for the course of about six hours in which I had to do what we call shortterm warnings, short-term fused warnings including two

extreme wind warnings. One (was) for inland portions of the Panhandle and another for portions of southeastern Alabama and southwestern Georgia,” Ulrich said of warnings issued due to the probability of wind gusts at or exceeding Category 3 strength. “Certainly, they had never seen anything like this

particular storm.” Ulrich added that he also had to issue flooding-related advisories. “In addition, we saw very heavy rainfall over the area. In general, 4 to 8 inches with isolated 10- to 12-inch amounts. So, we also had to issue multiple flash flood warnings for those areas, particularly where the center of the storm traced because that’s where the heaviest rainfall was occurring.” He noted that his experience as a forecaster in dealing with Hurricane Irma in 2017 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016 helped him greatly. “You get experience from each storm that you work in and, of course, each storm is different,” Ulrich said. “Matthew, we focused on the threat of extreme winds from the eye of the hurricane approaching our coastline. Irma, we knew with time that the greatest threats for east Central Florida were going to be flooding and tornadoes. So, I had two different

experiences under my belt. Matthew with the extreme winds and the potential for storm surge and then Irma from the heavy rainfall and the tornadoes. I think that all culminated with this storm because I’ve dealt with all four threats at the same time with Michael as it moved into Tallahassee’s area.” He also stated that he believes the work that he was a part of, particularly as it related to issuing extreme wind warnings, ultimately helped to save lives. “I think it did,” Ulrich said. “The fact of the matter is the unprecedented nature of Michael’s strength in that particular part of Florida warranted the use of the extreme wind warning farther inland than we have ever issued extreme wind warnings before simply because you’re talking about an area in the northern panhandle, southeast Alabama and southwest Georgia that has never faced a hurricane quite like this before.”V V

Bowlers strike with incredible turnaround

BY CARL KOTALA

They started out bowling just for fun. Then they got better. And better. And yes, even better. Now, seniors Ryan Cornish, Zack Chace and Conner Lynch are all part of what has turned out to be an incredible turnaround for the Viera High bowling team. After beating Eau Gallie in a big matchup last month, the Hawks were 13-2 on the regular season, tied with Rockledge for the best record in the district heading into the postseason tournaments. “Last year, when we joined

the team, Viera was the laughingstock of the district,” Cornish said. “We lost every game all the time and we were notoriously one of the worst teams. Ever since then, when me and my friends joined the team and actually got better, we started winning more and more. “This year, when the season started, we knew we were prepared and we knew we were ready to go. Here we are now, getting toward the end of the season, and we actually proved we can do it. We

As I await my total knee replacement surgery Nov. 5, I understand how the golf course layout might not be the toughest obstacle for members of the Viera East Men’s Golf Association and other senior golfers around Brevard County. Ailing hips, knees and backs can affect drives, chips or putts for older golfers. It’s amazing

how many 75-and-older golfers can score at or below their age with chronic pain. Find a good orthopedic doctor and follow their advice. October was an important month for VEMA as the new board of directors was installed. More golfers are coming back after spending the summer up north. We’re glad to have them back. Viera swimming program has season to remember BY CARL KOTALA

No matter what the rest of the postseason brings to the Viera High boys and girls swimming teams, it’s already been a season to remember. Before they began chasing what would be their sixth consecutive district championship, the Viera girls already accomplished something no other team in

'It's been a good season. The kids have been really awesome.'

The Viera High girls and boys swimming teams have had a very successful season so far. The girls recently won their first Cape Coast Conference championship. team,” Viera senior Ophelie Jacobson said. “Getting to share that moment after putting in so much work in a season was really something special.”

The Class 3A, District 5 meet was set for Oct. 24 in Sebastian River. Unlike past years, where the Hawks were able to get points from stars Sarah Rousseau and Ryan Just, Viera does not have a single diver on the roster this season. However, led by Jacobson and fellow seniors Sydney Sanchez and Karly Keysor the Hawks have still been able to get it done in the pool. “We had a lot of really good freshmen come in this year, so it was nice to have really good senior leadership from those three, and then have a lot of freshmen coming through, some of which are siblings (of other Viera swimmers), so they’ve been around the team and they

know what to expect,” Viera coach Morgan Woodard said. While the Hawks still want to win another district title, Woodard said she changed the lineup a little bit this year in order to get more swimmers to qualify for regionals. That includes Jacobson, who was just 1 second off the school 200 freestyle record and 4 seconds off the 500 freestyle mark. “I’m not a (year-round) club swimmer, so I’ve had to get back into shape at the beginning of the season, but I feel like I’m ready,” Jacobson said. “I only have two races left (three, if I make state) and I’m ready to just give it my all and leave it all in the pool.” While the girls have big

numbers this season, Viera’s boys have their smallest numbers ever with just 16 swimmers. However, as senior team captain Ethan Greek pointed out, it’s still been a successful year. “We’re still giving it our all, and we’re still winning meets,” he said. “We still look good. And we’ve got some good freshmen. Hopefully, they’ll swim over the year and they’ll get better for next year.” Connor Jones, Connor Marks, Bryce Hattrup and Dan Scougall have all had strong seasons for Viera. “It’s been a good season,” Woodard said. “The kids have been really awesome. It’s a good part of my day to come to practice, that’s for sure.”VV

Holy Trinity swimming enjoys solid season despite low numbers BY CARL KOTALA

With only 26 swimmers and two divers on the roster, the Holy Trinity Tigers might not have the numbers to win a lot of their dual meets. But that doesn’t mean their season hasn’t been a success. “We have been doing OK,” Holy Trinity coach Chris Beadle said. “We’ve had more losses than wins, but the kid’s times are improving, which is huge. “As few kids as we have, I don’t anticipate us racking up all the points. But when they’re dropping times like mad, that puts a smile on my face. It makes me happy and it makes them happy. “It’s pretty satisfying when the kids get out of the pool and say, ‘Coach, I got a PR! I got a PR!’ That’s awesome.” Holy Trinity was preparing for its Class 1A, District 5 meet which was set to take place Oct. 30 at the Indian River State College Swimming Complex. Senior Max Pagan, who will swim in the butterfly and individual medley events, was trying to work his way back from knee and back issues. “I’m feeling better now, but I’m still not entirely sure how I’m going to fare in the

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

The Holy Trinity swimming team has enjoyed a good season despite having low numbers. races,” he said. “These last few practices are going to be really important to me, personally, to get back to where I was.” Sophomore Tess Fargo, who has been dealing with shoulder and knee injuries, was preparing for the district’s 100 backstroke and freestyle events. “I have pretty good competition, especially in the 100 backstroke, but I think it’s going to go well,” she said. “I don’t know if I’m going to do the best that I want to, but I’m definitely going to put in all the effort. We’ll see how it goes.” Other top swimmers for the Tigers this season are seniors Selena Nishihata (200 IM, 100 fly); Ethan Potter (500 free, 100 back); Nikhil Patel (200

IM, 100 back); Trip Rachels (50 free and a relay) and Brandon Lawrence (50 and 100 free, two relays). The Tigers also are hoping

for big performances from junior Marissa Spies (200 IM and 100 breaststroke) and freshman Alex Spies (500 free, 100 breaststroke).

Beadle joked that she told her seniors they have to find someone to replace them on next year’s team. And while that would certainly be nice, it seems like the Tigers have a number of hard-working, younger swimmers on their team that drew praise from both Pagan and Fargo. “We’re a pretty young team this year,” Pagan said. “We’ve got a lot of newer swimmers coming out in the lower grades, from seventh to ninth grade. I’m really proud of how all of our swimmers have done. “They’ve shown a lot of dedication.”VV

Florida Tech celebrates turning 60 BY CHRIS BONANNO

A lot of impressive things have happened at Florida Tech in its 60 years of existence. The school has exploded in terms of population, and notoriety, riding the back of the nearby space program and ideal location near the Atlantic coastline to reach new heights. It has repeatedly been named a Tier 1 University by U.S. News & World Report and the Wall Street Journal and among the “Best U.S. Universities,” according to the school’s website. It has produced a host of distinguished alumni, including astronauts, distinguished military personnel and even a former Major League Baseball player in Tim Wakefield. It also helped send many to work at some of the world’s most important agencies and businesses, including NASA, Microsoft, IBM and Boeing among many others. As the school celebrates its 60th anniversary, two Viera-Suntree residents that have long been associated with Florida Tech are looking back at their memories of the school. Frank Kinney, a Viera resident, serves as chief of staff and vice president for government relations at the school. Kinney, who first became affiliated with the school in the early 1980s

SENIOR LIFE Courtesy of Florida Tech

Surfing has been a popular activity for students at Florida Tech since its inception. and has worked in three different stints at the school, said that he didn’t foresee the immense growth the school has had — though he does think that perhaps one person he knows did. “Maybe Dr. (Jerome) Keuper (school founder),’’ Kinney said. “He was quite the visionary but, at the end of the day, no, I don’t think most people saw back in 1982 the kind of growth and the kind of changes we’ve seen at the university. It’s certainly in line with what Dr. Keuper’s vision was.’’ Dr. Muzaffar A. Shaikh, a Suntree resident who retired on July 31 after being affiliated with the school as an associate vice president, associate provost and as a distinguished professor in the College of

Engineering for 32 years, pointed to the school’s diversity as a huge positive. “The reason for such a tremendous growth at Florida Tech, there are several reasons but international students … 120 countries represented and 33 percent of our population is (international) students,” Shaikh said, a Suntree resident Shaikh and Kinney agreed that the school’s location on the Space Coast is one of the big keys to the school’s surge. “I don’t think there’s any question that Florida Tech was ideally located,’’ Kinney said. “You know, for the success that it’s achieved to this point. The founding of the university in 1958 at the same time

that NASA was founded was fortuitous and certainly not by chance because Dr. Keuper of course was an engineer up there … at the space center working for RCA (Remington Arms Company).’’ Both have fond impressions of their time at the school. “There are a lot of memories, but fundamentally my memories deal with interaction with people, interaction with students, interaction with faculty and staff and then of course administration,” Shaikh said. “One of the things that I find most exciting about Florida Tech is the relevancy of the university to real problems that we face today in our area as well as throughout the nation,” Kinney added, noting that he’s especially proud of the work that faculty members have done with respect to the Indian River Lagoon, space and cyber security. Florida Tech’s “secret history” has been written online by Dr. Gordon Patterson, who serves as a professor in the School of Arts and Communication and who also serves as the school’s historian. proved in one year we can turn up the whole district and show that Viera’s back and we’re better.” The combination of the three seniors with an influx of talented young bowlers such as Cameron Cox, Colin Cox, Collin Frost, Christopher Soper and Jake Hand have put the Hawks in position for a postseason run. The district tournament was held Oct. 29 with the state tournament Nov. 7 and 8 at the Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando. Viera’s girls, meanwhile, feature five sophomores and could make the Hawks a program to watch during the next few years. Jenna Cleland, Grace Hunter, Susanna Cha, Bri Staerk and Summer King joined the team as friends and have shown steady improvement. “This is everyone’s first time bowling, so we’re kind of new to it,” Cleland said. “But we’ve been pretty cooperative with each other and as a team, we work pretty good … “We’re planning on doing it until we’re seniors, so we’ll get better.” First-year coach James Brand couldn’t be happier with the way his teams have come together this season. “They’re an energetic group of guys that play for each other,” Brand said of the boys team. “(The girls are) willing to learn and that’s what’s good about it. The boys help out a lot. A lot of my younger guys that are seasoned talk to them a lot, give them pointers. I’m pleased with their effort.” The Hawks are happy to have Brand, too. “Coach Brand has been very understanding of every single player on this team,” Cornish said. “He calls the shots. He just looks for our input. And since everyone communicates with him well … it’s probably why we’re 13-2.”V V

Viera’s Acevedo to play oboe in national band at Disney BY CARL KOTALA

Viera High junior Anny Acevedo admits she was surprised when she found out she was selected as a member of the 2018 AllNational Honor Concert Band that will play at Disney World later this month. “It’s kind of crazy that I made a national band,” she said. “I’m really surprised. I didn’t think I would.” Acevedo has been playing the oboe since she was in the fourth grade when she lived

in New York, and convinced her director to let her try to play something other than the flute. She found out she made the national band as the Oboe 2 in June after turning in her audition a month earlier. “They do an audio audition, so I recorded with the lovely Mr. (Mark) Cole in his little recording studio,” she said. “It was a very humbling experience. It was just me and him in a room recording me playing my oboe.” The event is scheduled to

take place Nov. 25 to 28 at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. Acevedo, naturally, is looking forward to playing at Disney and with other talented musicians. “The NAfME (National Association for Music Education) All-National Honor Ensembles represent some of the top performing high school musicians in the United States, and we are extremely proud of Anny’s achievement,” Viera High band director Nick Eggen wrote in an email. “Anny Acevedo is one of the most talented and dedicated student musicians to attend Viera High School. She is diligent about both her music and academic studies, and is a great representative of the Viera Community.” Because people might not be as familiar with the oboe as other instruments, Acevedo was asked what she would tell people about it. “I just want people to know that it’s definitely not a clarinet,” she said. “It’s a wooden instrument and it

The Brevard County School Board unanimously approved a plan to build an elementary school and middle school in the Viera-Suntree area at a meeting on Oct. 23.

New schools will mean fewer buses on causeway BY CHRIS BONANNO

The Viera-Suntree area will soon be a home to a pair of new schools after the Brevard County School Board voted unanimously to approve plans to build a new elementary school and a new middle school in the area. The plan is for the elementary school, which will be located off a stretch of Stadium Parkway that has yet to be completed near Pineda Causeway, to open by August 2020. “The elementary school is absolutely amazing because what it’s going to be is to not only relieve Quest (Elementary), but for the 7,000 homes that are going in south of Wickham (Road) and west of (Interstate) 95 in Viera that’s going to be a secured facility,’’ said Matt Susin, who represents District 4 on the Brevard County School Board. “Much like a footprint like Manatee (Elementary), except what it’s going to be is you’re going to have secured front entrances and higher security all the way around the entire school.’’ Area school enrollment projections show a need for a new school since Manatee and Suntree Elementary Schools are projected to maintain capacities exceeding 90 percent for the next five years. Quest’s enrollment is forecast to skyrocket with 117 percent capacity by 2019-20 and 126 percent by 2022-23. Susin added that the elementary school construction will help each school “level out so that we can have between 800 and 900 kids per (area) elementary school.” The middle school will open no earlier than 2023. Susin said there currently are two sites available, with one being adjacent to Viera High School. The other site is farther south and west. It is closer to the Pineda

vieravoice.com

Causeway area. There could be population issues at Kennedy Middle School in Rockledge and DeLaura Middle School in Satellite Beach, where area students currently go to middle school. Kennedy is projected to be at 89 percent capacity for the 2019-20 school year and well above capacity at 107 percent for the 2022-23 school year. DeLaura is slated to be at 100 percent capacity for the next school year and at 101 percent capacity in 2022-23. “What we’re looking to do is to stop all the buses going over the causeway,” Susin said. “We currently have nine buses going over the causeway, and we have over 270 extra students that are projected to be in that middle school over the next three or four years. So, you’re talking about close to 15 buses that will be going over the top and, if everybody knows, it’s about $60,000 a bus. So, you multiply $60,000 times 15 and you look at the cost that the school board is engaged in spending just to get those kids to DeLaura. So, the idea is build that middle school — keep those kids here.” Susin told the Viera Voice in July that the elementary school would cost $22 million and that the middle school would cost $35 million to build. Both of those price tags would be covered via impact fees, he added. Reaction from Viera residents in attendance at the meeting was enthusiastic. “I’m super excited. I’m so happy for our whole community,” said Kayla Spellman, a mother of four who has been an advocate for the schools. “I think this is a wonderful resource, and it’s going to be great for our kids and our families. I am so grateful for the work of the board, especially Matt Susin and Karen Henderson. (She) came before him on the board and really advocated

always for the school capacity for Viera that has been needed for years.” “It means that I can trust that my grandchildren will get a great education in a neighborly community,’’ Lisa Keys said. “That’s reinforcing of education and that’s super important to us. It’s why we built our home in Viera, and I’m glad that we can continue

to stay in Viera.’’ The vote was the culmination of what Susin said was “12 years” of effort to help get the schools built. “They need additional student stations in the community, but it’s not just the elementary school,’’ said Todd Pokrywa, the president of the Viera Company. “It’s also the middle school. So,

I think hearing the timeline and the commitment to start spending dollars on the design for the middle school was important because those are both needs in our community. An additional elementary school is in the near term and a middle school on the horizon as well.’’ VV

Williams students make job easy for school resource officer BY ERNEST ARICO

When Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputy Cliffton Dasher is having a tough day or feels bummed out, he knows where to go to feel better. Dasher, who is in his first year as the resource officer and safety specialist at Ralph M. Williams Jr. Elementary School in Rockledge, takes a walk down the hall to Kelly Mercer’s pre-kindergarten class. As soon as he walks into the classroom, children rush up to the deputy and give him a hug, high five him and thank him for being at their school. Dasher quickly forgets his problems. “The kids are fantastic, he said. “They are very supportive of me. They love me being here. A 1999 graduate of Trenton High School, which is near Gainesville, Dasher obtained his associate degree in Liberal Arts in 2009 from Florida Gateway College in Lake City. He received a bachelor of arts degree in Criminal Justice in 2013 from Saint Leo University. Dasher began his law enforcement career as a deputy with the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office. From 2006 to 2016, Dasher worked as a child crimes investigator and in the

department’s evidence room. He joined the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 16, 2016. Dasher said he was interested in working and living in Brevard County for many years. “My mom grew up in Cocoa and Rockledge and went to Cocoa High School, he said. “My dad got a job at NASA and worked at Kennedy Space Center. My family has been in the (Brevard) area since the 1990s. Dasher, who is married and is the father of three children, said he enjoys helping kids and being there for them. “This is why I am in law enforcement, he said. Because of his experience as a child crimes investigator, Dasher said he can look at a child’s body language and tell if the child is in distress. “It’s important to pay attention and keep an eye on them, he said. “If something is bothering a child, you need to look into it. Catch it early. Part of his duties include walking the school’s perimeter, checking doors, walking the hallways, looking in classrooms and interacting with the students. He also is concerned about the vehicle traffic in front of the school. “There is some aggressive driving going on, he said.

“People honking their horns. We only have one crossing guard and a teacher at the school’s entrance. I’m keeping an eye on that. Another safety issue Dasher is working on is bicycle safety. He noticed several children riding their bikes to school without helmets. “I’m talking about that in classes and I plan on putting together a pamphlet for kids to take home to their parents, he said. Dasher also likes to talk to children about some of the equipment he carries on his belt — flashlight, taser and gun. “I try to turn everything into a teaching tool, he said. “I allow them to touch my flashlight, but not my gun. I try to explain why I carry them. Dasher’s biggest fear? “An angry parent or person coming in from the street, he said. “A person who’s lost a job, road rage, divorce. Those are the ones you have to watch out for. There are a lot of evil people out there. Despite that fear, Dasher said Williams is a really good, safe school. “The administration, staff and teachers are very handson, very involved in school safety. It makes my job a lot easier. They are very supportive. They love me being here. Williams Principal Wes Herold echoes those sentiments.

Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputy Cliffton Dasher is in his first year as the resource officer and safety specialist at Ralph M. Williams Jr. Elementary School in Rockledge.

“He (Dasher) is an amazing person, he said. “He has a natural relationship with the students. He is a good listener and takes the time to sit and talk with the children. Herold, who is in his first year as principal at Williams and responsible for about 550 students, also appreciates Dasher’s knowledge of safety and security. “It’s a necessity for him to be here, Herold added. “His presence alone de-escalates any situation. Herold said the school’s administration, staff and teachers, along with Dasher, are working on a presentation to the children about bullying, a growing concern to many parents, schools and law enforcement

officials. “It is character education and positive reinforcement, Herold said. “We need to address this issue and it’s great that we have officer Dasher here to help us. But the best part of the job, Dasher said, is the children. “When I go to the lunch room, I feel like a celebrity, he said. “It’s just a great feeling knowing the kids are very supportive and love me being here. Quest will honor its military families with Nov. 9 event BY CARL KOTALA

As Quest Elementary School’s Before and After School coordinator, Arlene Ferguson gets to overhear a lot of different conversations between kids during her day … including one about the school’s upcoming event to support military families in advance of Veterans Day. “They were excited about it,” Ferguson said. “One of them was talking about how it would make his dad seem important in front of the other kids. “I thought that was really nice.” Quest, which has 101 students who are in military families, will host an event on the morning of Nov. 9 in the school assembly room. Students will gather with their military families and the event will be live streamed to the rest of the school. Local Boy Scouts Troop 757 will present the

colors for the Pledge of Allegiance, after which Quest Principal Christine Boyd will welcome everyone. “We’ll have students come up and talk about each branch of the (military) and then have the parent, or grandparent or uncle stand if they’re part of that branch,” Boyd said. The school’s chorus also will perform two songs. There also will be strips of construction paper in different colors representing each branch of the military at every table. The students will write their names on that strip of paper, which will be turned into a chain that will hang around the school. Boyd, now in her second year at Quest, held a similar event during a four-year stint as a principal in Temecula, California. “We’re trying to make a lot more connections with our military families, because that population is

increasing,” she said. To that end, there is a map in the school’s hallway where students can put their names and the different places they have lived on stickers to show where they have been before coming to Quest. Boyd also recently met with officials at Patrick Air Force Base in order to get events off their calendar so she could add it to her weekly school communication. The Nov. 9 event is sure to be a hit. “Everyone’s excited,” Boyd said. “Some of our teachers are also part of the military, so they’ve definitely volunteered and stepped up to make the strips of paper. Mrs. (Lauren) Sicoli jumped right in and asked if she could help get the kids organized for the different branches. “Mrs. (Laurel) Foote and Mrs. (Kimberly) Haggard, our music teachers, were definitely all in when they heard it about it as well.”

Quest third grader Jacesyn Carter, whose mother, Brittany, is stationed at Patrick Air Force Base, said he is looking forward to the event. He likes “to spend time with my mom because we don’t travel so much anymore.” Another third grader, Kayla Chandler, said she was a little “nervous” about standing in front of her classmates, but is proud of her Army parents. Ferguson, whose husband, Belden, retired from the Marines, said events like this let people in the military know how much they are respected in the community. “That shows them that a lot of people, besides the ones that they work with in the military, are showing that they care,” Ferguson said. “It really makes you feel like, ‘OK, we’re being appreciated.’ “… Just to find out other people appreciate what you’re doing is really heartwarming.”V V

BPS superintendent wears wild pink ties all of October

BY ERNEST ARICO

Mark Mullins doesn’t have to worry about adding any pink ties to his wardrobe. The newly appointed superintendent of Brevard Public Schools wore pink ties every day in October for Breast Cancer Awareness month. And he can thank dozens of high schoolers for adding to his tie collection. Mullins commissioned the district’s fashion design students to create a selection of pink ties for him to wear during the month. Students responded by designing, sewing, embroidering and creating neck ties, bow ties, Western bolo ties and Parisian cravats. The only stipulation — they had to be pink. Fashion design teachers told students they could use paisley, plaid, herringbone, argyle, chevron, gingham, hounds tooth or tartan

material to make the pink ties. In addition, students could use glitter, rhinestones, feathers and tassels to enhance their creations. The superintendent visited several high schools to check out the students’ work, including Carrie Humphrys’ class at Viera High School. Mullins said he was impressed with the work by the Viera students, especially some of the designs that were made using a special computer software program. “I’m very excited to see the work they’ve done,” he said. “It looks like Amazon delivery rate packaging. This is fantastic.” Mullins wore a pink tie created by a student and then showcased it on his Facebook page. He told the Viera students he first learned about breast cancer when he was a middle school student

I want to raise men’s awareness about breast cancer.” The superintendent was one of 10 Brevard County men chosen to participate

in this year’s Real Men Wear Pink campaign. Others selected to participate were County Commissioner Curt Smith, Viera Company President Todd Pokrywa, Lockheed Martin’s Joe Mayer and Michael Ayers from the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce. The campaign is part of

the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraiser, which raises money for the American Cancer Society. The money will go to cancer research and the 24/7 hotline, wigs and transportation and lodging the American Cancer Society provides for free to patients and their families.V V

Health-oriented grocery store will open this winter in Viera

BY WENDY SCHEURING

Earth Fare Market, a new full-scale grocery store, will open its doors this winter in north Viera. A health-oriented food company, Earth Fare offers foods and food items that are all-natural and organic. The company has 1,300 private brand items and sources from non-GMO ingredients across the board, while keeping within the consumer’s budget. With its humble beginnings as Asheville, North Carolina’s first natural food store in 1975, the original store was called Dinner for the Earth. The company later changed its name to Earth Fare during the 1990s, and a new healthoriented grocery chain was born. Since then, Earth Fare has expanded to 47 stores located throughout the midwest and eastern United States from Michigan to Florida. The company is dedicated to

Doors will open in late 2018 or early 2019 depending on the construction schedule. Applications for the Viera Community Advisory Board currently are being taken. The board will consist of 15 to 20 diverse members who will meet with Earth Fare representatives to ensure that the specific needs of the community will be met. “The heart and soul of Earth Fare is our foods philosophy,” said spokeswoman Laurie Aker. “We make it easy for a family to live a healthy lifestyle. You can come into our store and leave with a shopping cart full of healthy food. This is our commitment to clean.” Earth Fare’s food philosophy

Temple Israel, Chabad soon will be neighbors in Viera BY JEFF NAVIN

It’s an exciting time to be Jewish and to be living in Viera. Two synagogues will be just a short walk from each other after Temple Israel sold

approximately 7½ acres of its 10-acre complex to Chabad of the Space & Treasure Coasts. Temple Israel will build a new synagogue on the 2½ acres that it retains, and Chabad will move into Temple

Israel’s present synagogue. “It’s not that common to share campuses,’’ said Rabbi Patricia Hickman of Temple Israel. “But, it’s a wonderful thing to have happen. Both of us (Hickman and Rabbi Zvi Konikov of Chabad) believe it is God directed. We’ll see how it unfolds. “We celebrate all the same holidays,’’ Hickman said. “We will do our thing and they will do their thing. Education opportunities will be more accessible. I’m excited about what it can do for our community.’’ Under the agreement, Temple Israel has 18 months to build a new synagogue. If there are delays, an extension of up to six months will be granted. The new synagogue should be eco-friendly. “Our mechanical systems will have a higher seer level for a more efficient rating for things such as air conditioning,’’ said Larry Fineberg, a member of Temple Israel who is on the building committee. “We’ll have better insulation and environmentally friendly material for the furnishings and flooring. The windows will have double insulation, and our landscaping will have Florida native plants. Solar panels are being discussed.’’ Viera is a true expansion for Chabad of the Space &

It has been there since 1999. “Here at Chabad of the Space and Treasure Coasts, we are very excited about the new Viera expansion and see this as a huge step in our plans for future growth and much added activities in our community,’’ said Rabbi Zvi Konikov, who serves as the emmissary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, the founder of the world’s largest Jewish organization in more than 70 countries. “The object of Chabad is to be an inspiration for every Jew regardless of affiliation or background and to raise the level of knowledge and connection to their beautiful heritage of Judaism.’’ Konikov is eager to meet members of Temple Israel. “We see our fellow Jews as part of the same family, so

The close friendship between the two rabbis will help the community. “We have in the past participated together during Chanukah events, Holocaust memorials and other meaningful communitywide programs,’’ Konikov said. “The concept of achdut, unity, is of prime importance in Judaism and we look forward to wonderful things happening in this spirit for our community in the future, including the members of all the synagogues in Brevard and Indian River Counties and the unaffiliated Jews as well.’’ VV

BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER

Through the melodies played on a guitar, veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) find a bit of calm, a new interest and renewal in a better life. The program that helps those veterans, Guitars for Veterans, has launched a new chapter in the Viera area. “The organization is 10½ years old, with 50 chapters in 25 states and is growing existentially to tell you the truth,” said veteran Brian Donnelly of Viera, who has started the local chapter. “I stumbled on the website because I play guitar and I am a veteran — a perfect match.” A nonprofit organization founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2007, Guitars for Veterans is 100 percent volunteers giving instructions on loaner guitars to interested PTSD veterans. The local chapter is in partnership among the Department of Veterans Affairs, Guitars for Vets, veterans and the Viera Woman’s Club, which sponsors an annual fundraiser concert to benefit the group. Why learn on guitars? “First of all, it is portable where a piano has to stay where it is,” Donnelly said. “Everyone knows someone (singer or friend) who plays a guitar and wishes they could play it. Music brings them out of that cave called PTSD. What happens, after my veteran

works at it and practices, in 10 weeks he will have his own guitar. As more veterans join the group, in say 16 weeks, they will have a get-together and then form their own band. That happens throughout the country. “The veterans in the program sign a contract saying they are going to show up, try their best and practice on the loaner guitar. Within seven weeks, if he keeps practicing and if he

keeps the commitment, a new guitar with accessory kit is ordered for the veteran, free of charge through the Guitars for Veterans program. Veterans wanting to be involved need to go through the VA and social worker and it is best if they don’t have any experience with a guitar.” Jill Hansen, a Viera Woman’s Club member, is the liaison between the Guitars for Veterans and the Viera Woman’s Club in finding a

group to offer help. The third fundraiser twohour concert, sponsored by the Viera Woman’s Club to benefit the Guitars for Veterans, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center at 8298 N. Wickham Road in Viera. Tickets are $12. Guitar and bass drums provide blues, jazz and rock and roll music. For tickets, call Hansen at 321-543-0059 or Chris Whitley at 321-610-3237. VV

Viera High School Theater Department will perform ‘All Shook Up’ SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

The Viera High School Theatre Department, also known as Starhawk Productions, will perform “All Shook Up” at 7 p.m. Nov. 16, 17 and 18 at the Viera High School Auditorium. A 2 p.m. matinee also will be performed on Nov. 18. “All Shook Up” is a musical comedy built around a number of songs made famous by Elvis Presley. It’s not a biographical revue. It takes place in 1955, somewhere in the middle of America, where one girl’s dream and a surprise visit from a mysterious leatherjacketed, guitar-playing stranger help a small town to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock and roll. Among the 24 songs featured in the score are classics such as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Love Me Tender,’’ “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and of course the title tune, “All Shook Up.’’ It is loosely based on

There also is an initiative to follow current International Rotary President Barry Rassin in his goal to bring more women into Rotary and into Rotary leadership. “I think pretty much everybody in the room came to the consensus that we wanted to be different,” Rey said of the tone of a formative meeting for the

club. “We didn’t want to be like all the other clubs.” The club, which Hutto said has a little more than 30 members, meets at noon each week at Tequila Azul at 6630 Colonnade Ave. in Viera. “It appeals to women, working women because we do meet at lunchtime,” Hutto said. Hutto said the club welcomes new prospective members at its meetings “with open arms” where they would explain what being a Rotarian is about. “We truly want to make a difference in our community,” Rey added. “I like that Rotary’s premise is built on what you think, say and do,’’ Pisacano said. “And, a good way to live life. Is it fair to all concerned? We want to build goodwill and better friendships.’’ For more information, go to vierarotary.com. V V

HELP SUPPORT THE PRESERVATION AND PROMOTION OF JAZZ...

The season of spending more time in the kitchen is here. According to statistics, Americans spend an average of 1.1 hours per day preparing food during Thanksgiving (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) against the average 37 minutes (USDA) throughout the year. Be it for family visiting or simply to follow tradition, this is the time of the year where we cook more, eat more, and sadly, we waste more, too. In a 2012 paper, the Natural Resources Defense Council reveals that “40 percent of food in the United States goes uneaten.” From the total of $165 billion of uneaten food that is thrown away every year, about $293 million of that happens during Thanksgiving, reports Maria LaMagna for Marketwatch. With our landfills filling up and food making up about 76 percent of the buried waste (EPA), this is the perfect time to reflect about old habits and, perhaps, start looking into acquiring new ones. Since “in North America, up to 65 percent of food waste happens at the consumer level” (Northwest Earth Institute), changing what we do can have a great impact on what goes to the landfills. This is the list that I started after reading suggestions from different sources: • Plan meals according to ingredients already in the

BEYOND the CURB Marcia Booth

pantry and the fridge • Check product for freshness — note that “sell by” and “use by” dates are not federally regulated and do not indicate safety; most products can be safely consumed after those dates • Plan meals — having a menu for the week will guide your grocery shopping • Purchase ingredients in the amount needed; stock up only items that are frequently used • Avoid sales tricks that lead you to buy things you will end up throwing away • Buy the amount you need from bulk bins — and bring your own bags and jars! • Take the challenge to use an entire vegetable from skins, to tops and stalks. You can find amazing recipes and tricks online such as epicurious.com And while you are working on cutting down on food waste, consider starting to implement zero-waste kitchen rules — e.g. shop with reusable containers and cutting down on disposables. So this season, let’s be thankful, not wasteful. Happy Thanksgiving. V V Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@RecycleBrevard.org.

Town Square Assisted Living battles breast cancer in unique way BY DARRELL WOEHLER

Paris Flores took the idea of going out to paint the town one step beyond. She came up with the phrase Paint the Town Square Pink as Town Square Assisted Living fought breast cancer through Breast Cancer Awareness on Oct. 10. In coordination with Town Square management, the event was supported by residents, various individuals and 16 vendor organizations. The lobby area of the facility, below the chair railing, was painted pink to give the entire lobby area a glowing look and feel. Nearly everyone in attendance wore pink.

Almost all the vendor decorations and handouts were pink. Of the 84 current residents of Town Square, 13 are breast cancer survivors. “The medical profession has made great strides in recent years in that some who now survive would have been lost in previous years,’’ Flores said. “The older generations that have gone through this cancer are generally more reserved in wanting to or being able to discuss their background with this disease.” Social concerns continue to present stigmas. “It’s very important to get the spouse involved,’’ Flores said. “Men with breast cancer is not that uncommon. The feeling of loss of womanhood can be overwhelming as well

as the financial aspect on the family. Even with insurance, high deductibles can present a problem as well as with certain medicines. There may be a lot that is not covered.’’ The lack of insurance might prevent women from being tested. “I had no symptoms, but there is a test in every testimony about breast cancer,’’ Flores said. Town Square Director Trish Collins said Paint the Town Square Pink will become an annual event. In the lobby, there was a pink Christmas Tree, decorated with ornaments that had notes signed by breast cancer survivors. Local musician Fred Cavese entertained everyone with music on his saxophone. His theme for the evening was “Music that Makes You Smile.” VV

Chateau Madeleine will treat Alzheimer’s, dementia in unique fashion SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

A little bit of Holland will help Chateau Madeleine fight Alzheimer’s and dementia in its senior-living community. A 325-square-foot multisensory therapy room known as a Snoezelen was created by Dutch scientists to help treat patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Snoezelen comes from two Dutch words — “snuffelen” (to seek and explore) and doezelen (to relax). Snoezelen multi-sensory environments are relaxing spaces that help reduce agitation and anxiety, but they also can engage and delight the user, stimulate reactions and encourage communication. Chateau Madeleine is nearing completion adjacent to the Fresh Market off Wickham Road in Suntree. Memory enrichment programs, family support groups, pet therapy, supervised activities, mobility and transport assistance as well as personal living assistance for bathing, dressing, medicine administration, grooming and more will all be included for one monthly

price at Chateau Madeleine. On-site licensed health care professionals (24 hours a day) and around-theclock emergency response monitoring will provide additional peace of mind for residents and family members alike. Pet friendly, the locally owned and operated 70,000-square-foot senior living community will offer residents the opportunity to

Three chef-prepared meals per day and concierge services are included in the monthly rental price, with no buy-in fee. Pre-lease reservations

feature a special monthly rate for three years. Ron Aylward, a Chateau Madeleine administrator, said the Snoezelen multisensory therapy has been an intriguing topic for potential residents and their families. "Therapy in the multisensory environment at Chateau Madeleine is a real game changer,” Aylward said. “This is the first Snoezelen in a memory care setting

in Central Florida, and the benefits to the resident patient include greater awareness and attention along with an overall improvement in quality of life.” Yvette Jenkin, the director of sales and marketing, said the Snoezelen can provide a customized experience via a wifi controller. “The room is designed to offer supervised multisensory therapy for up to three residents at a time,’’ Jenkin said. “Family members can be trained in the use of the Snoezelen controller, so they can also use the Snoezelen with their loved ones. We are able to customize the therapy to any one of numerous experiences for the resident, depending on their assessment. “One person may require a therapy that provides active engagement, while another resident may benefit from a calming session. This is truly amazing, state-of-theart technology that will be available right here in Suntree.” For more information about Chateau Madeleine, call 321-701-8000 or go to SuntreeSeniorLiving.com. VV

Irma Canoe carves out path to Florida's fascinating past BY CHRIS BONANNO

Last year, the impact from Hurricane Irma led to a lot of serious problems in Brevard County. But for archaeologists, the storm surge in the Indian River helped unearth a historic dugout canoe in the river. The canoe, which in some circles has been nicknamed the Irma Canoe, was found following the storm on Sept. 10 by Randy Lathrop. He had been on a bike ride on Indian River Road, north of Cocoa Village, when he saw the dugout canoe. “I was amazed that it was what it was and I was amazed at where it was,” Lathrop said. “I recognized it immediately as a dugout but it was almost beyond belief, frankly. My first move was trying to get it out of the road so that the front end loaders wouldn’t get it. That was my primary concern.”

From there, according to the City of Cape Canaveral’s website, Lathrop contacted the Florida Division of Historical Resources who took it back to Tallahassee where it was analyzed for nearly a year. It came back to Cape Canaveral, the city said, after the division found that the city was building a new cultural arts facility that will be called The Cape Center. To that end, two archaeologists, Steve Karacic and Julie Duggins, from PaleoWest gave a presentation at Cape Canaveral City Hall on what was found after the analysis of the dugout canoe had been completed. Though definitive conclusions could not be reached, the pair was able to give probabilities as to when the canoe was made. There was a 49.5 percent probability that the canoe was built between 1640 and 1680, a

37.2 percent chance it was constructed between 1760 and 1810 and an 8.6 percent chance it was made between 1930 and 1950. Both Karacic and Duggins expressed excitement at being able to study the dugout canoe. “It’s been a year since the dugout was found and it’s been a roller coaster of up and down trying to piece together the puzzle of what this dugout would be,” Duggins said. “It’s been a real pleasure to work on. It’s been actually

a highlight of my career to be able to work on this artifact. It’s special in many ways,” Karacic said. “It’s not just the uniqueness of the artifact, but how much everyone in the community of Cape Canaveral cares about. You get a real sense of excitement when you see 10,000 or 20,000 views on Facebook of this artifact. And, you come to a place like this, such a warm reception for the artifact and you see how much it means to people and that really makes a huge difference for us.”

The canoe will be on display at Cape Canaveral City Hall before it is transferred to The Cape Center when it’s completed. City of Cape Canaveral cultural programs manager Molly Thomas said the city hopes that the facility will be “fully operational” sometime in 2020. “For me, it’s the beginning of The Cape Center,” said Thomas of the canoe. “The Cape Center is going to be the city’s first cultural arts facility and this is the first tangible piece of it.”VV

It’s been a team effort among the residents at Indian River Colony to fight breast cancer. Indian River Colony Club’s Women’s Golf Association held a fundraising tournament to raise money for the Busty Bunch walking team, which took part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event at the Avenue Viera on Oct. 27. Other IRCC residents also have donated to the breast cancer research cause, and the total exceeds $7,000 according to Maureen Reeder. Besides the golf tournament and luncheon, bake sales, silent auctions and the sale of T-shirts also have raised money to fight breast cancer. The sale of T-shirts was through the Rockledge Professional Firefighters. VV

Is it true that Varicose Veins are a sign of a medical issue? Yes. Please do not ignore signs of leg varicose veins. VIERA VOICE photo

The Good Deeds Foundation of the Military Officers Association of America Cape Canaveral Chapter (MOAACC) raises money by reaching out to MOAACC members and the local business community to distribute grant checks to various students in Brevard County.

If you notice bulging veins, you have a significant medical condition. Bulging indicates a chronic medical condition. Constant dilation causes blood to stop blood flow back through the legs, leading to further damage. This includes swelling with tissue damage, legs swelling, aching legs, permanent skin pigmentation changes, along with ulcers.

Good Deeds Foundation supports school activities SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

The Good Deeds Foundation of the Military Officers Association of America Cape Canaveral Chapter (MOAACC) recently distributed 20 grant checks of $350 each to the JROTC Unit, Sea Cadets Division and Civil Air Patrol Squadron in Brevard County. The money will support each group’s activities during the 2018-2019 school year. Dan McIntyre, the MOAACC’s student affairs

chairman, organized the ceremonies at each school and he was assisted at the presentations by more than 20 MOAACC members. The checks were presented in classrooms, at auditorium ceremonies, in a museum and at two football games with a combined 1,600 fans in the stands. The grants, which totaled $7,000, were the largest contribution MOAACC has made, according to GDF President Donn Weaver. VV

Widzgoswki said organizers expect around 20,000 people to line the streets of Viera to watch the parade. Still, despite the large numbers of people expected to attend the parade and the growth of the area itself, Widzgowski said organizers have worked hard to make sure the parade is structured similarly to the way it has been in past years. “I think from a company standpoint, we’ve tried to keep the parade to the size that it is. We’ve just tried to change the elements within it,” Widzgowski said. “…. We want to not commercialize it, but keep it for the community.” Holding the parade on Thanksgiving weekend makes it unique.

A fireworks display will be put on, and there will be an entertainment area next to the Calvary Chapel church off Fellowship Place and across from Viera High School. Buy into the Greatest Generation with World War II truck BY ERNEST ARICO

If you’re interested in owning a piece of military history, here’s your chance. Bryan Moffit of Satellite Beach, the president of Advantage Concrete of Florida, is selling a 1942 Chevrolet 1½-ton, four-wheel drive U.S. Army truck, trailer and cover. The selling price is $10,000 to $15,000, but Moffit says if someone offers him $9,000 he might sell it. “I’ve got all the paperwork,” he said. Moffit, whose company is located at 7285 Waelti Drive in Suntree, said he purchased

two trucks from a man a couple of years ago. “I fixed up one of the trucks and I use it for the business,” he said. “I was planning on fixing up the second one, but I decided to sell it instead.” Moffit’s company offers residential, commercial and industrial ready mix concrete. It has been in business for 15 years. Moffit said the truck and trailer, which sits on an empty lot at the intersection of Waelti Drive and Wickham Road, is in good working condition. “The motor has been replaced,” he said. “The

winch works and the hitch works.” Moffit said he would love to sell the Army truck to a museum or a veterans association or group. “They can fix it up and maybe use it in a parade or display it in a museum,” he said. Moffit admits he can’t tell how many miles is listed on the odometer, but he does have the original 1942 license plate. “It’s from Florida,” he said. “In fact, as far as I can tell the truck has never left Florida.” For more information about the truck and trailer, call 321-615-4930. to educate the whole child — mind, body and spirit — so it was very important to us to find a head chaplain who could relate well to our seventh through 12th-grade students,’’ said Dr. Katherine M. Cobb, the president of Holy Trinity. “We feel very fortunate to have found someone like Chaplain Jared who has such a strong calling to work with students.’’ VV
