Viera High cheerleading co-captains, from left, Haley Dishong, Jordan Greene, Brianna Muzzy and athletic director Chris Gallagher, along with school principal Jim Hickey, far right, and school mascot Mo Hawk, took part in a ceremony honoring the school, which won the 2012-13 FHSAA/Fred E. Rozelle Sportsmanship Award for Class 7A, Section 2.

Viera High proved last season it knows how to win on the field of play. Turns out, the Hawks know how to do it in the right

fashion, too. After not receiving a single fine for unsportsmanlike behavior last year by the Florida High School Athletic Association, the Hawks were presented last month with

the 2012-13 FHSAA/Fred E. Rozelle Sportsmanship Award for Class 7A, Section 2. With the award came a special recognition plaque, which was presented at halftime of the Viera-Satellite

football game. There was also a check for $500 from the FHSAA. Viera principal Jim Hickey said good behavior is something that is stressed among the school’s players

Launching and expanding local business is essential, Weatherman said. “While we put a lot of effort into attracting new businesses to the Space Coast, our work in strengthening and fostering local businesses is also a vital, if less publicized, part of (the EDC’s) mission.” In addition to learning the identity of the winning educator first hand, the annual meeting will be an opportunity to network with 300 top decision makers from across Brevard County and get an up close and private experience of the Shuttle Atlantis Exhibit, Weatherman said. For more information or to register by Oct. 18 at a cost of $55 per person, or $60 afterward, go to SpaceCoastEDC.org and click on EDC Events, or call 321638-2000. 25Years Excellence 21 in Ophthalmology

The Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast will honor the top educator who has planted the seeds of successful business management in the minds of future entrepreneurs, from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex’s new Shuttle Atlantis Exhibit. The Thomas E. Gamble Excellence in Education for Economic Development award is named for the former president of Brevard Community College, since renamed Eastern Florida State College, who died unexpectedly of cancer in 2006 after seven years on the job. The college has always been a beacon for business and community development, and many of its business and entrepreneurial programs were planned, launched or expanded on Gamble’s watch. EFSC was awarded a $1.54 million federal grant Sept. 19 that will be used to help launch its three new bachelor’s degree programs in information technologies next year. The money comes from $474.5 million in funds to colleges and universities nationwide in a U.S. Department of Labor effort to develop and expand innovative training programs in growing industries and strengthen partnerships with employers. “Education and economic development go hand-in-hand, and Tom Gamble understood that,” said EDC president Lynda Weatherman. “More importantly, he allowed that notion to guide some of the ground-breaking program development he undertook at the institution now known as Eastern Florida State College.” Pat Fuller, Ed.D., of Suntree

is one of the nominees. The long-time business and economics professor was tapped to develop and head up the Business Entrepreneurship Program with business philanthropist Bernie Simpkins from 2008 to 2009. Out of the gate, the program won the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship out of 800 programs in the country. “It is the job of schools to prepare students to enter the workforce,” said Fuller, himself an entrepreneur as a former magazine publisher. “What better way to prepare them than to teach them every possible aspect and scenario of business ownership as an entrepreneur.” During the past few years of economic recession, many students launched their own businesses because they could not find a post in today’s job market, Fuller said. He and Simpkins work to inspire students and community members alike through the program’s speaker series featuring successful entrepreneurs, among them local business superstar Carol Craig of Craig Technologies, S. Truett Cathy of fast-food giant Chick-fil-A, restaurateur and legendary Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula and the light-hearted cookie king Wally Amos of Famous Amos. “They turned a negative into a positive and, instead of taking a job, they found themselves in a position to create jobs for others,” Fuller said, noting that more than 80 percent of the country’s employers are small businesses and calling them “the backbone of the U.S. economy.” Information Fuller supplied from the entrepreneur program gave EFSC an edge

Viera residents may already have noticed a growing number of signature events in the works for their town, and towns near and far will know of them soon. The biggest on the horizon by far is the Nov. 30 “Light Up Viera” Parade and Holiday Pops Concert. It is timed for the Thanksgiving peak holiday shopping weekend, set for the Saturday after Black Friday. The efforts are the sole focus of a new marketing executive under contract by the Viera Company, the arm of A. Duda & Sons that is turning the former farmland of the area’s founding fathers into new communities within the town. “This is purely a marketing effort. We have 14,000 acres still to develop and we want people to experience everything Viera has to offer,” said Joane Dowd, whose official position is event architect. She is the former CEO and owner of a marketing and promotion company that included A. Duda & Sons and their subsidiaries as clients, along with major companies worldwide. Dowd’s events serve a two-prong purpose. The main goal is to market the town of Viera, with its focus on lifestyle amenities and close-knit community feel, to consumers in other parts of the county, region and country. “We want to bring people from the outside to experience Viera,” Dowd said. “The events are a marketing tool that benefits everybody.” Thus, the second aspect of the signature events campaign is to have more opportunities for residents to have fun together. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising, Dowd added. The Viera Fall Festival & Oktoberfest will span Friday through Sunday, Oct. 25 to 27 and include an authentic German “Hoffbrauhaus” tent and music, along with arts and crafts, pumpkin carving, Halloween costume contest, hayrides and carnival rides of a large fall festival. The holiday parade is expected to bring in thousands of visitors to line the route from Breslay Avenue around Tavistock

Drive, along Viera Boulevard and down Stadium Parkway. Santa and his reindeer will invite parade watchers to tag along and enter Space Coast Stadium for a pops concert by the full Brevard Symphony Orchestra, performing on a custombuilt, covered stage. Teams of 25 persons each will work the Wickham Road and Fiske Bolulevard exits off I-95, handing out maps that tell people where to park along the route and sending participants to float staging areas. Calvary Chapel of Viera is a major sponsor and will assign 200 volunteers to work

the parade and cancel its 5:30 p.m. evening service to provide parking. Companies can sponsor a float for $2,500 that will include lighting, their corporate signage and banners, choice of float, delivery to the staging area, a professional driver, all insurance needed and 40 wristbands for VIP seating at the concert. Participation options are available at Viera.com/Light up Viera; click Participation Application for details. All parade attendees will be able to come to the Viera Discovery Center the entire month of November to

pick up their free Holoplex 3-D glasses. The lenses are designed to enhance colors, producing tiny twinkling reindeer that dance around the parade’s points of light. Dowd, who has lived and worked in Spain, the United Arab Emirates and other spots across the globe, has relocated from her Orlandoarea home to Brevard. “I’m very excited about all the possibilities, and I’m enjoying everyone here,” Dowd said. “I’ll be working hard so everyone looks to Viera for great events.” For more information on events, call 321-255-4500, ext. 4880. Inside Station #47: ‘on the call’ Firefighter paramedics do it all just 1/10 of a mile east of the Wickham Road exit, the station just a stone’s throw north of Wickham on the east side of the street. “You have to position yourself on one shoulder or the other of the busy interstate. You get one shot at it because there will be no reverse with the big unit. Cars are whizzing by, and then they slow down, often to take a look at what is going on,” Rudnicki said. “This causes secondary accidents, frequently right before our eyes. Our team is at great risk.” Rudnicki and others from Station 47 weigh in on the toughest, scariest parts of the job that start once they “get the call.” To start with, note the fact that their uniforms are so dark blue they appear black. Add the Florida sun and humidity to the fire and smoke of their frequent foe, and you’ve got a recipe for heat stroke, or at least extreme discomfort. How do firefighters stay cool Viera Voice Linda Wiggins in the Florida heat? BCFR Lt. Pam Rudnicki performs a high-elevation rescue that requires “It doesn’t happen. High elevation rescues will become more frequent with the addition of high-rise buildings on the Viera/Suntree horizon, from office towers in Suntree to the Viera Hospital, and more tall medical plazas to follow.

Many people think firefighters and paramedics face the greatest danger tackling burning buildings to rescue endangered victims, but they’d be wrong. The thing that sends the biggest chills down spines and adrenaline through the veins of Brevard County’s domestic warriors?: Rescues on Interstate 95, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue Station 47’s Sgt. There is always one more thing to do, one more thing that comes between tending to children with special needs and the calm it takes to regain sanity. So say a handful of moms who carve out precious time to meet faithfully at a local Viera restaurant for breakfast each Thursday to share joys, sorrows, information, resources and above all, hope. “It’s a chance to get together and have some ‘me’ time,” said Sandy Reid, who along with mom Arwyn Holmes coincidentally pulls double duty as official helpers for others in their shoes. They are members of a resource team at Space Coast Early Steps Children’s Medical Services, a nonprofit provider of services for young children with special needs on behalf of the Florida Department of Health. Some of the moms have adopted children with known birth challenges such as fetal alcohol syndrome or maternal drug addiction, most are within the exploding mushroom

cloud of autism spectrum disorder, others meet the challenges that come with developmental delays, and nearly all deal with the learning disabilities and behavioral disorders that may accompany their children’s special needs. The moms agreed on mantra at a recent breakfast: When you are a mom, especially when you are a working mom, it’s tough to get the time to be by yourself or with friends to unwind from the tension of raising a family in today’s world. But when you have one or more children with special needs, it’s practically unheard of. “So much more of your time and energy, your emotions, is spent on caring for your child or improving your skills or their skills at coping,” Holmes added. There is one thing that sets this “me” time apart from the prospect of say — as unattainable as it may be — a manicure and pedicure day at the spa. “This is a time we can all look forward to, block off our busy schedule for, because not only are we bonding over a shared challenge in our lives, but we can also feel

like we are doing something productive to learn more about how to address our children’s needs so we don’t have to feel guilty about doing it,” Reid said, adding emphasis on that vital last aspect. They uncover shared experiences that could one day go down in the annals of discovery toward prevention or cure, such as the high incidence among their children of the common four: asthma, allergies, eczema and ADHD, the increasingly common attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder that is a challenge to fitting in at school or a future workplace, or forming positive relationships overall. After “gives me hope,” the next most common term the moms gave for the group’s effect is “lifesaver.” “I live for this,” Pat Jarrell Shortt said, slowly shaking her head back and forth in earnest. “I really do.” While the Viera moms group is not officially open to the public, for a special invitation, for suggestions on how to form one or for any other resource, call Reid at 321-409-2136, ext. 209, or go to cms-kids.com. Family Promise of Brevard will host its second annual golf scramble at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at Indian River Colony Club in Viera. The success of the event is critical with this month’s launch of the program, according to executive director Tara Pagliarini. Family Promise is a network of congregations that host up to four homeless families for one week each quarter. The families sleep in temporary dorms in church facilities. During the day, their children attend schools and adults look for work and

improve life skills toward independence at a day center at Grace Fellowship Church in Rockledge. “This is the time of the greatest need for funds because we now have our doors open and are serving families,” she added. Three of 13 host churches are in the Viera/Suntree area, with another three as support churches contributing funds and volunteers to the three churches: Suntree United Methodist, Faith “Viera” Lutheran and Advent Lutheran. Popular bazaar gives leg up on discount holiday shopping By Linda Wiggins

Anyone who has taken a trip to Disney World knows the cost for a family of four can surge into the multiple hundreds of dollars. Suntree United Methodist Church will dangle a fourperson Park Hopper package valued at $516 to entice shoppers to its indoor 26th annual Christmas Bazaar from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov 2. “Part of our mission is to help families in our community, and this will allow a family to bond over an activity that will make lifetime memories, doing something they may see other families enjoy, but that may be out of reach for them,” said SUMC member and volunteer Nancy Short, chairing the event for the third straight year. The bazaar is also a costeffective way to shop for the holidays, with popular stops such as the Book Nook, Unique Boutique, Attic Treasures and Silent Auction. Auction selections are brand-new items and services donated by 50 local vendors that are good as gifts for others, or for one’s own family to enjoy restaurants and entertainment, often at a fraction of the regular cost. The crown jewel of the event is the art and crafts

Greektoberfest returns for more fun St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church’s second annual Greektoberfest & Marketplace is 3 to 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. Greektoberfest is a smaller version of the church’s annual Taste of Greece Festival, which will be on the weekend of Feb. 21. It features great Greek food and beer. A Greek DJ and local Grecian Odyssey Dancers will perform, giving attendees a glimpse into the Greek culture. For more details, call 321-254-1045. VV

showcase, featuring 35 of the best local artists offering a variety of one-of- a-kind works. The popular annual fest is billed as a chance to “shop for a cause,” Short said, with all proceeds going to charities and church missions. This year, the event will benefit a new project coming on line called Family Promise of Brevard, which will use SUMC and other churches as temporary housing for homeless families seeking independence. Church volunteers will serve meals, entertain children and

otherwise encourage family members along their path toward maturing in the ways of Christ, Short said. Other bazaar features and fundraisers include a free car wash by the SUMC youth group, free photos with Santa Claus for use in Christmas greeting cards, barbecue luncheon at a reasonable fixed price and Kiddie Korner with cookie decorating and face painting. Farms foster new life cranes and other rare objects of ornithology are spotted nesting. “There is a lot of wildlife to begin with,” said Mendoza, superintendent of the 900acre sod farm. Many varieties of grasses grow in the fields and are sold to builders and others with the need for mass quantities of sod. The welcome mat for wildlife is congruent with the operations farther to the west, at the end of Wickham Road. What more should be done to keep the Nationals at Space Coast Stadium? Photos by Bob Parente

Robert Salazar

To keep the Nationals here in Brevard, fans need to go to the games in full force and show the team and organization that we are 100 percent behind them.

Shawn Ray

Coach and General Manager of the Space Coast Hurricanes As with any sport, you need to get butts in seats. The Nationals need to have more community involvement so they can get more local support for better attendance.

John Leep First, I would have them increase the number and types of family nights. Also, the parking needs to be fixed. That field gets everything so dirty. The last thing is more marketing/advertising to include the Orlando area.

Emily Maccarone

It’s a two-way street. The Nationals have to embrace the Brevard community, do more for us. We, on the other hand, have to remember that we have to support them. We need to remember that we have baseball stadium that offers our all all-American pastime cheaper than going to the movies on a Friday night.

To keep the Nationals here, we have to promote them more, like put up a sign for the stadium or a billboard on I-95. They also need to increase their exposure, other than the bad press they are receiving now, so more people will go to the games.

The Viera High girls volleyball team will host Space Coast in the seventh annual Pink Game on Oct. 10. Proceeds from the game will go to Dig Pink, a national foundation for high school volleyball teams across the country to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research. By Carl Kotala

Some games are simply more special than others, and not just because of what is at stake for the winner and loser. The Viera High School volleyball team will host Space Coast at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 in the seventh annual Pink Game. Proceeds will help support breast cancer research. In addition to ticket sales, there will be concessions that will feature pink items such

as cookies, lemonade and cupcakes among other things. There will also be a “Drawing for Chance,” a serve-athon and prize giveaways, including gift baskets, dinner gift certificates and an iPad mini. Donations from the game will be made to Dig Pink, a national foundation for high school volleyball teams across the country to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research. So far, the Hawks have raised more

than $20,000. This year’s game, which takes place during spirit week at VHS, will have special meaning for Viera coach Sarah Spinner and her father, Robert Spinner, who is principal at Space Coast. “The Pink Game is very special to our community, administration, students and me personally, especially this year with my Aunt Judy (Lachenbacher) passing in January,” Sarah Spinner said. Melia Storum, a junior transfer from Cocoa Beach, should also have a big impact, along with freshman Samantha Folio and seventhgrader Marie Groppel. “This potentially could be the best girls team I’ve ever had,” Butler said. “We’re really, really strong this year. The problem is Oak Hall has the best team they’ve ever had, too.” Wollrath, meanwhile, admits winning a third straight state title is on her mind, but she also knows she’s going to have to earn it. “I feel like I always have a lot of competition,” she said. “There are always a couple of girls I know that are really VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala good and I’ll have to work Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy boys cross country team has won the past two Class 1A state championships hard to beat.” and is ranked No. 1 in the state this season, while the girls team is ranked No. 2. It may be an old saying, but when it comes to the Holy Trinity boys cross country team, it certainly seems to hold true. “We didn’t rebuild,” Tigers coach Doug Butler said. “We reloaded.” While only three runners returned from last year’s team, which won its second straight Class 1A state championship, Holy Trinity boasts a roster that features three of the top four ranked freshmen in the state — among all classes. The Holy Trinity girls, meanwhile, has a two-time champion of its own in junior Julie Wollrath, who will be going for her third consecutive individual Class 1 championship. On top of that, the girls are ranked second in the state and will be looking to overtake last year’s top team, Oak Hall. “Our team is really good this year and I think we have a chance at winning state,” Wollrath said. Hawks have big hopes in 3A golf By Carl Kotala

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Led by players, left, Michelle Hawkins, Taylor Rajeski and Katie Arnott, the Viera High girls golf team should be a Class 2A state title contender this season.

● 18 Years in Business

= A NAME YOU CAN TRUST!

● Open 24/7

= CONVENIENCE TO FIT YOUR NEEDS!

The Viera High boys and girls golf teams have a few things in common this season: They’re both blessed with deep, talented rosters and they’ve both got legitimate shots to contend for the Class 3A state championship. “We have high expectations,” said Viera girls No. 1 player Michelle Hawkins. As if girls coach Greg Ford’s team wasn’t deep enough, the Hawks’ strength has been augmented by the arrival of Hawkins (from Thailand) and No. 2 player Taylor Rajeski, who transferred to Viera after playing for state champion Lake Mary last season. Not only have they already formed a strong friendship, but Hawkins and Rajeski have made a seamless transition into the Hawks’ program. “I love it,” Rajeski said. “The team is very loving and the coach is awesome. I love the coach. We’re all very hard

working. That’s what makes it work.” Joining Hawkins and Rajeski on Viera’s talented roster are freshman Sam Brimhall, senior Sam Dahl, junior Kaycee Gray, sophomore Katie Arnott, sophomore Katie Goodman and senior Carli Ford. Ford believes Viera, Dr. Phillips and Venice will all be top contenders for the state title this year. “I think we’ll have a shot, but again, anything can happen,” Ford said. “We’ll give it our best.” Viera’s boys, meanwhile, have an 18 team roster full of players capable of shooting under 80. That can make for some competitive practices. “My practices might be more stressful than the matches,” coach Paul Bentley said. “These kids are trying to fight for their position, trying to fight to get into the match.” Three-year veteran Alex Liles is at the top of the ladder and can drive the ball well

over 300 yards. The Hawks have also been strengthened by the addition of junior Nico Gagliardi, a transfer from Titusville. Sophomore Ryan Rozic and freshman Tyler Greek are blossoming into top flight players. The remainder of the lineup can vary with the top contenders consisting of sophomore Mitchell Albright, senior Kevin Keller, sophomore Tyler Solnay or sophomore Kyle Desceno. “We have high expectations,” Bentley said. “We expect to win the Cape Coast Conference tournament and we expect to give Vero Beach a run for their money at the district (tournament).” If the Hawks can get hot at the right time, Bentley believes anything is possible with this team. “I feel like if we play our best golf, we can win everything,” he said. Anytime you have Greg Young, you’re going to be a contender. The senior bowled 246 last month to help Viera edge Heritage and improve its record to 4-2. Matt Cassone (234) and Patrick Franza (213) also topped the 200 mark. Tyler Fischer had 190 and Evan Keeney added 144. On that same day, the Viera girls lost their sixth straight. Maria Rocca had 162 for the Hawks while Jamie Schlegel threw 159.

VIERA HIGH FOOTBALL It’s been a record-breaking season for the Hawks, who got off to a 4-0 start for the first time in school history following a 38-7 road victory over district foe Sebastian River. … Senior quarterback Cody Dentmon hit Tre Nixon with a pair of touchdown passes to key the win over Sebastian River while sophomore running back Zach Blanch — who came into the game as the county’s No. 2 rusher — scored his fourth touchdown of the season.

VIERA SWIMMING/ DIVING The Hawks are off to a strong start as evidenced by a tri-meet win against Holy Trinity and Eau Gallie. Peter Haddad won the 200 IM and 500, while Joey Molnar took the 100 free and Grant Spence won the 100 breaststroke … The Viera girls were also winners with Jocelyn Lott winning the 200 free and the 100 fly. Grace Noel won the 50 and 100 free and Jordan Fleisher won the 200 IM and 100 back.

VIERA VOLLEYBALL Nina Alvarez racked up 106 assists and 14 service aces in the Hawk’s first five matches, while Alex Bynum had a teamhigh 44 kills, Marisol Murray had 87 digs and Alana Shoff had 11 blocks. Viera improved to 4-2 with a 3-0 win against Bayside. In that match, Shoff had 11 kills and two blocks while Cailea Gibbs had nine kills and two blocks. Alvarez had 22 assists and five aces. Bynum led the team with 12 digs. VV

Expectations high for Holy Trinity golf

Viera teams excite

By Carl Kotala

By Carl Kotala

The odds of Holy Trinity reaching its first state golf tournament would certainly appear to be stacked in the Tigers’ favor. Not only does the boys team feature three players— senior Kerry Sweeney, senior Matt Allison and eighthgrader Calvin Sierota—capable of shooting par for 18 holes, but both the district and regional tournaments will be held at Suntree Country Club, Holy Trinity’s home course. “That makes a difference of us moving on,” Allison said. The Tigers would have likely made it to the Class 1A state tournament last year were it not for one troublesome hole at the regionals, where the team was a combined 9-over par. That kind of trouble is less likely to happen on Holy Trinity’s home course. In fact, Tigers coach Ron Benfield estimates being on familiar territory could mean a two-stroke difference for his players, who are hoping to have a team score of 300 come regionals (that’s an average of 75 for the top four players over 18 holes). In addition to Sweeney, Allison and Sierota, the Tigers are also expecting big things from senior Trey Ville and sophomore Mitchell Kara this season. Sweeney, who won the regional tournament last year, is eager to take another crack at the state finals. “I want a ring this time,” he said. While the boys team has a trip to the state tournament on its mind, the girls team is also looking forward to a strong season that should see the Tigers competing for the district title against the likes of Edgewood, Melbourne Central Catholic and West Shore. The girls are led by two seniors, Mary Lewis and Kendall Kara, along with junior Kaley Stirtzinger, sophomore Lilly Wall, sophomore Emily Dixon, junior

There’s a new sense of confidence and enthusiasm surrounding the Viera High cross country program this year — and with good reason. Not only do the Hawks have some talented runners, they also have a new district that should help them be much more competitive. “Our district is smaller, so our goal is to advance out of districts and into regionals,” Viera girls coach Kate Howick said. “That is a goal that is very attainable.” Suzy Henderson, a co-captain and one of the Hawks’ top runners this season, said the enthusiasm level has gone up quite a bit on the girls team. Henderson is joined by junior Molly Bryan, junior Lexi Eastburn, senior Angie Altzner and senior co-captain Gabby Rennie. Senior Jessica Manifold is a four-year runner for Viera, along with Meghan Audo and Katelyn Winters. The Hawks, who last went to the state meet in 2008, are in Class 4A, District 9 with Centennial, Port St. Lucie, Martin County, Treasure Coast and Vero Beach. Viera ranked third in the district early in the season “I think the fact that we’re so close – we’re right there – and if we keep our spot we definitely have a shot at going to the regionals and doing well,”

Lindsey Webb and freshman Lela Gunderson. On top of that, there are six other new recruits who should be ready to contribute to the Tigers’ good fortune in the coming years. Coach Lisa Lewis has been pleased with the way her team has played in the early part of the season, pointing in particular to a Sept. 16 match against West Shore where the Tigers had a team total of 188 on the way to improving their record to 8-2. Lewis said she had never seen the team shoot lower than 200, which is again an indication of good things to come for the Tigers. “It keeps getting better every year,” Lisa Lewis said. VV

BOARDWALK OF SUNTREE 7720 N. Wickham Rd., Suite 108 Melbourne, FL 32940

321-757-3370 OPEN MONDAY - SATURDAY 9 A.M. - 7 P.M.

Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy students looking to glean more information about their potential college of choice will get a chance to do just that at the school’s sixth annual College Festival on Oct. 15. Representatives from at least 24 colleges will be on campus to meet with Holy Trinity ninth through 12th graders. . For the juniors and seniors, it’s a chance to ask specific questions about the application process, or perhaps some of the school’s requirements. For freshmen and sophomores, it’s an opportunity to explore what types of schools may be available to them, including big schools, small schools and instate or out-of-state colleges. Jo Pagan, the school’s associate director of college counseling, said there were several reasons behind the creation of the event. While the school always does its best to accommodate college representatives who want to come on campus, students must choose between attending the session or going

to their regularly scheduled class. The College Festival helps streamline that process. There will be no classes scheduled between 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The morning begins with a breakfast/reception with the representatives, followed by five 20-minute information sessions, where students can get the kind of personal attention they would not likely get at other college fair events. “College fairs are great ways

to gather information from a college, but it is by no means a situation where they can ask particular questions or linger for any length of time with an individual college,” Pagan said. “They shake a hand, they pick up a card from the representative, a brochure and then they’re on to the next table. “(This will) make it a little more meaningful experience for our students.” The event has become quite popular through the years. “I think they enjoy it,” Pagan said. Among the schools expected to be in attendance are: Army ROTC; Auburn University; Barry College; Florida Atlantic University; Florida Tech; Florida Southern University; Lynn University; Rollins College; Stetson; University of Alabama; UCF; University of Florida and Vanderbilt University. Georgia Institute of Technology and Wake Forest University will have Skype sessions available for Holy Trinity students. VV

Viera/Suntree schools lose, gain teachers By Linda Wiggins

Schools across Viera and Suntree swelled in attendance compared to the low figures projected by the Brevard County School District, which resulted in the loss of a number of beloved teachers who were not invited back this year, and the later addition of ones who had not yet been placed in jobs at the start of the year. Students have now been moved into new classes and new teachers added after the official “six-day count,” which takes place four weeks into the school year that started Aug. 14. She taught at Suntree when the attendance was at 1,500 students and moved to Longleaf Elementary when it was opened to ease overcrowding. One of the reasons fewer students left area schools than anticipated is that the schools are all among the

highest rated in the district, Giombetti said. “That is what I’ve heard from parents,” she said. “Of the 15 who did move over, many of their parents told me they did not want to leave, but felt they must get a foot in the door to guarantee their children won’t have to leave the area for middle school.” VV

Think outside the box: businesses and schools join love-gift drive By Linda Wiggins

operations manager for the YMCA fitness club in Suntree. Internally, the three YMCAs in Brevard filled and shipped 1,000 boxes apiece last year. The popular Operation Christmas Child announced it surpassed its 100 millionth delivered gift, a double milestone because this year is its 20th anniversary. The project is run by Samaritan’s Purse, a faith-based nonprofit focused on relief efforts. Its president is Franklin Graham, son of famed evangelist Billy Graham.

A third factor, added YMCA board member Rev. Bill Kearney, is that the business would provide a neutral zone for people cool to the church experience. “You’re not going to be proselytized here,” Kearney said. Throughout the month, Rowlette and Kearney are inviting potential workplace and school coordinators to attend a video screening on the project, also known as Operation Shoebox, and learn of plans for drop-offs, storage,

Suntree YMCA operations manager Joe Rowlette and board member Rev. Bill Kearney invite representatives from businesses and schools to consider organizing an Operation Christmas Child gift drive.

“First, it would take the drive outside the four walls of the churches to include givers in the workplace and in schools,” Rowlette said. “Second, it would provide a focal point for people who go to churches that may not have a volunteer coordinator for the project, but who for whatever reason choose not to become involved in another church’s activities.”

packing and shipping the boxes well in advance of the holidays so gifts may arrive in time. Many go to children in severely impoverished, remote locations across the country and globe. For some, it will be their first Christmas gift ever. For more information, call Rowlette at 321-259-2929 or Kearney at 772-480-6364. VV

Pumpkin Picking Guidelines:

 Select pumpkins that are completely orange.  Medium pumpkins are best for carving. Small pumpkins are better for cooking.  Never lift or carry a pumpkin by its stem. The stem gives it character.  Examine the entire pumpkin carefully for soft spots. If you find even one soft spot, go on to the next pumpkin.  Check the pumpkin for cracks and splits.  Look for bugs and insects. Specifically, look for holes in the pumpkin, which are indicative of insect problems.  Bring a small wagon with you. It’s easier to haul tired kids and big pumpkins.

The smell of home cooking permeates smaller, homelike dwellings for seniors at Palm Cottages Assisted Living Facility in Rockledge. “It’s unique by design. It’s a very homey environment here. We have eight cottages that have 12 to 14 residents each,” said Mary Ellen Chasteen, director of Culinary Services at Palm Cottages assisted living facility. A staff of 10 full-time cooks — many whom are former chefs — each cook out of one cottage, serve them, and then go across the street and serve another cottage, she said. Julieta Colzani is assistant director of Culinary Services. “We have a lot of fabulous cooks with experience here. They’re amazing because they bring their touch to the table. We expect them to put their heart and soul into what they’re doing here and to make sure they are giving the residents are number one. It’s a very key aspect. They can’t overlook their stomachs. They look forward to that food,’’ she said. Serving comfort food rather than exotic dishes seems to work best, Chasteen said. “I try to find a menu that is going to be compliant for the diets that we need to provide to our residents but we want

Mathnasium – a gymnasium for the mind

By Rosemary H. Lynn

National Cruise Night Open House

Dr. Hassan Borghei fled to the United States with his family in 1979 during the Iranian civil war. He is an exceptional man who knows that hard work and a good attitude mean more than wealth when it comes to being successful. After arriving in the United States at the age of 14 with his parents and brothers, Borghei studied diligently to gain entry into engineering school. His parents had only $97 when they arrived, so Borghei knew he would have to work hard to get into a good school. He became an electrical engineer, where he could use his math skills. Later, however, he discovered that he wanted to be a physician and decided to go to medical school so he could help other people. He became a gastroenterologist. Today, he is with Health First Medical Group and has a regular practice in Brevard.

But Borghei is much more than a physician. He has recently purchased a franchise of Mathnasium, a unique learning facility that helps students in grades K-12 master math fundamentals. “Grades one through nine are the most popular for the program,” Borghei said. Although students learn math in school, they are often confused and left to struggle with some of the most basic elements. This is where Borghei and his center director, Pam Jordan, come in. Along with several teachers, they hold workshops at the learning center, located at 7777 N. Wickham Rd. in the Suntree Publix shopping complex from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. There is no homework and the students study from centerprovided workbooks. Everything available is divided into three segments: fundamentals, math according to the grade the children are in, and homework help. “Everyone needs to know a certain amount of math,” Borghei said. “Life is about problem solving.” Jordan, a teacher by trade, has a passion for helping students. “I like the idea of working one on one with students. There will be three or four students per teacher, which will give the child an upper hand in the learning experience,” Jordan said, seconded by Borghei. “Being successful is working hard and being persistent,” Borghei added. “It is my hope that one day, 10 years from now, a student of mine will come knocking on my door to thank me for my help.” For more information, contact mathnasium.com/Viera or call 321-242-6284. Cindy Le, center, and her knowledgeable staff are ready to welcome you for the epitome of pampering. By Rosemary H. Lynn

Cindy Le owned and operated a nail salon in Melbourne for 10 years prior to realizing her dream of opening a full-service day spa. Now she caters to discriminating clients who demand high quality in service as well as products. Euphoria Day Spa and Salon is the epitome of pampering. As owner and director of the spa, Le is adamant about using organic facial and hair products, as well as natural wood and leather furniture. “I want to have an all green environment,” Le said. “It is important to me that we use the most natural products and furniture.” According to Chris Bond, assistant director and manager of the salon, men are also interested in salon services. Hair stylists are trained in men’s haircuts and today, many men enjoy manicures, massages and facials. Located at 7640 N. Wickham Road, Ste. 111, in Viera, the spa offers a full-service hair salon with top notch stylists and colorists. Manicures and pedicures are a specialty, with a full line of all natural Zoya nail polishes, in addition to

other brands. The custom massaging manicure chairs were imported from Italy and clients can pick from scents, which are custom mixed at the time of the appointment. A combination of lotion, scrubs and oils are used on feet and hands to enhance the mani-pedi experience. Facials and massages are offered in quiet, private areas, which are conducive to relaxation. Le personally selected each of the manicurists and massage therapists, who are considered to be some of the very best. Euphoria carries an exclusive line of Davines hair color products and all-natural Goldwell ammonia-free color line. Facial products include a special line of creams and masks designed by Dr. Ross Clevens, Central Florida plastic surgeon who designed products to meet the needs of all women. Unique to Euphoria Day Spa, hanging hairdryers allow the stylist more freedom and create a state-of-the-art look. Imported stylist and shampoo chairs are very comfortable and can be adjusted for each individual. To learn more about the spa, go to EuphoriaDaySpa.com or call 321-242-9999. VV

Responders must be hoisted or must climb above the victim, turn themselves upside down, clip a safety harness onto the victim, and clip the safety harness to their own body. “If you approach from below,” Rudnicki said, “the victim will jump on you, and then it will be impossible to both carry them and climb down safely.” Car crashes are standard fare in Florida, and the best

All units carry a tool known as the Jaws of Life to “extract” victims from their vehicles. “It’s an amazing, lifesaving tool, but also very heavy,” Station 47 rookie Justin Foster said. “After a couple of hours, you really start to feel the 40plus pounds.” Time on the job turns love of adrenaline into value of safety, Rudnicki said. “You discover that rushing into action can get you hurt and cause mistakes. The Florida Historical Society will host author and Chautauqua Betty Jean Steinshouer for a lecture and discussion 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 at in the Library of Florida History located at 435 Brevard Ave., in historic Cocoa Village. The event is free and open to the public. Discussion and refreshments follow the talk. Steinshouer has toured 43 states, since 1988, with her Chautauqua portrayals of great women authors. Chautauqua is an adult education movement that became popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. First held at Chautauqua Lake, N.Y., these assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s, bringing entertainment and culture to communities. Steinshouer has spent years of ongoing research on each author, bringing reality to the personalities and realism to the words and thoughts she presents. She was an intercollegiate debater and orator in undergraduate school, but Steinshouer left her love of public discourse and rhetoric to study literature in graduate school. She has joined both fields in her Chautauqua career. Steinshouer recently added a new program to her repertoire: Voice of the Everglades. A study of Marjory Stoneman Douglas debuted in 2007 in towns across Florida. Steinshouer spent six years

studying Douglas. Her research began when she wrote a book on women authors in Florida for the University Press for Florida’s history and culture series. Her volume, “Running South In Agitation: The Florida Journeys of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Sarah Orne Jewett, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Elizabeth Bishop, Marjory Stoneman Douglas and Anne Morrow Lindbergh” is currently in production. The Florida Historical Society is the state’s oldest existing cultural organization. Though interrupted by the American Civil War, the society, which was created in 1856, reestablished in 1902. It is dedicated to preserving Florida’s past through the collection and archival maintenance of historical documents and photographs, the publication of scholarly research and through historic preservation projects. Absentee ballots sent to military, overseas voters

Special to Viera Voice

Brevard County Supervisor of Elections Lori Scott announced that mail-in or absentee ballots were mailed last month to military and overseas voters for the 2013 Municipal and Special District Election to be held on Nov. 5 for Indialantic, Melbourne Beach and Barefoot Bay. The elections office emailed ballots to citizens who requested to receive ballots electronically. “The Military and Overseas Voters Empowerment Act (Move Act) permits military and overseas voters to receive their ballots via e-mail

or fax. I am proud to see Brevard’s military and overseas voters utilizing this convenient method of voting,” Scott said. Approximately 1,964 mail/absentee ballots are currently scheduled to be mailed to local voters on Oct. 8. Absentee ballots must be received in the elections office by 7 p.m. Nov. 5. Voters can track the status of their absentee ballot through the Brevard County Elections website VoteBrevard.com. everywhere. I go to the bank. I go to Publix to get my groceries. You see us everywhere. The simple solution also opens the door to the world. “As long as I can get to the buses, I can go anywhere in the world. No place is out of bounds and no door is closed to me. I can do anything I want to do, Poliey said. “No one can keep me out of any public place with my dog; I know the laws and my rights. I trust JJ with my life. The canine’s dedication earned JJ an honor typically reserved for humans. He was awarded his membership vest from the Viera Lions Club Sept. 10 at the Holiday Inn Viera, where the group meets at 6:30 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. “He is such a sweet, loyal and calm dog. He is one of us, said Viera Lions president Ruby Jackson. In helping Poliey, JJ is fulfilling the club’s motto, “We serve. The Lions’ mission is to create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation. Hellen Keller challenged the Lions at an Ohio convention to become her “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness. Ever since, the primary mission of Lions Clubs International has been to rid the world of preventable and reversible blindness and provide services for people who are already blind or visually impaired. The fact that the club’s primary mission is to help the blind had no bearing on Poliey’s attraction to the Lions. “I went to a meeting and saw it was a fun group that did good things for others, he said.

If Peter Poliey can make light of what some may see as his plight, he figures it will set others at ease. The Suntree man is totally blind, and relies on his dog, a black Labrador Retriever named JJ, to level the playing field. “People ask me what kind of dog he is and I’ll joke with them and say, ‘He’s a yellow Have a lot to protect? Lab.’ They’ll say, ‘I’m sorry, but Concerned about rising costs and reduced coverage? your dog is black.’ Then I’ll say, ‘What?! They told me he was a Receiving just average service? yellow Lab!’ Poliey’s friend, Mike Donovan, summed it up, “He’s a character, that’s for sure. While jocular, Poliey is also matter of fact about the special requirements needed to live the full life of unhindered mobility that others take for granted. Michelle Irwin is entering her second year as the face of Brevard schools, and the changes just keep coming. “We’ve moved away from just communications director into more of a community relations mission,” said Irwin, also known as the public information officer whose tasks also include selecting what information not to communicate. Irwin, who once wore the hat of school principal in the Michigan area from which she hails, gets to feed her passion to perform as a television, print and online journalist as well. She hosts original programs on BPS-TV, shown on Brighthouse Networks channel 198 and 99.1, as well as Comcast 52. Soon the programming will be available on demand via a website under construction that will feature news online. In addition to local content and school board meetings, the channel broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Irwin produces three different newsletters, featuring news around the district. One of them is dropped in the backpacks of all 67,000 students to keep their families up to date. “I definitely believe in reaching out to connect with businesses, civic groups and all other segments of the community, and to stay connected statewide and nationally where education is concerned for the benefit of our schools,” Irwin said. Each time Irwin takes on

a new task, which is often, she “gives the baby away” to a capable member of her staff. She has moved many departments and staff positions under her management. One such full-time position has been dedicated to selling advertising and sponsorships in limited areas of commons areas at schools and at sports games and assemblies, commercials for online and television programming and ads in the newsletters. The move launched two years ago initially was let out as a contracted service, and moved in-house to increase the percentage of revenues. “I believe in having the very capable members of staff take ownership of their projects without me micromanaging, but definitely staying in communication,” Irwin said. While communication is her strong suit, she is the first to

look at her performance and to find ways of improving. Case in point: the drive to add a half-cent sales tax to sales up to $5,000, an increase from 6 percent to 6.5 percent. “As hard as we worked to rally all segments of the community, we could have done a better job at communicating key points,” Irwin said. “For example, people would not have been discouraged from making large purchases in Brevard because of the $5,000 cap.” The slim-margin failure resulted in deep cuts to school budgets, reduced hiring and the closure of three schools. The school closings continue to create ripples of acrimony among groups Irwin still strives to win over. “It’s been an interesting first year, and I look forward to good days ahead.” To connect with Irwin, call 321-633-1000, ext. 796. A new home for Habitat for Humanity for Brevard County means the need for more volunteers to help out in a variety of ways. The organization known for giving locals the opportunity to help build their own homes expects their operation to flourish at its new 18,000-square-foot “ReStore” and headquarters at 4515 Babcock St. in Palm Bay. The new space will include enough room for the ReStore thrift shop, offices, a garden nursery, a wood-working classroom, dormitory space for volunteers and a separate building for construction activities, according to its website. The organization bought the Palm Bay facility for $800,000 in May and it is expected to pay about $300,000 for renovations. “If you want to help out, you don’t have to know how to use a hammer,” said Habitat development director Lisa Barr. “Volunteer positions are needed in every area, including the need for help photographing current projects and posting the photos on social media sites.” For more information, call 321-728-4009 or go to brevardhabitat.com. Praying Mantis (Mantis religiosa)

By Charlotte and Charlie Corbeil

Assisted Living Facility AL#9987

The praying mantis occupies temperate and tropical habitats worldwide. About 2,000 species exist. Close relatives are the cockroach and termite. The name originates from the prayer-like position of the prominent front legs. Because it preys, it is also labeled preying mantis. This insect developmentally experiences three stages: egg, nymph (miniature version of adult), and adult. The threesegmented body includes the head, thorax, and abdomen. For scanning and hearing, the head turns 180 degrees. This triangular alien-like head displays two lateral, wide-spaced, large compound eyes that provide exceptional vision. Placed between these eyes are three tiny simple eyes for light detection. The dark spot on each eye is a pseudopupil. The thorax bears raptorial forelegs (designed to capture

prey); the unique mouth manipulates the prey. Wings vary by species; some are long, short, useless, or nonexistent. Outer wings camouflage the insect and shield the hind wings which are the main propellants of flight. Flight is hindered for the female because of her larger abdomen housing reproductive parts. Carnivorous, the mantis feeds primarily on insects. It is also cannibalistic, notably during the nymph stage. Moreover, the female frequently consumes the male after mating (post-sexual cannibalism). Incredibly, she sometimes eats the male during the actual mating. An adept predator, this creature stands perfectly still for long periods, waiting to ambush its hunter. Green to brown camouflage enables it to blend in or mimic its surroundings. It might sway to imitate foliage or to discriminate what it observes. When endangered, the mantis

stands tall, spreads its forelegs, fans its wings, and opens its mouth — a threatening stance. Some species exhibit menacing bright colors and patterns on hind wings and front legs. In any event, the lifespan is only about one year. Organic gardeners utilize the mantis for biological pest control. Also, it is valued as a pet. It rivals the tarantula and scorpion, and its bite does not release venom. VV

Bringing 25 Years of Handyman Experience Directly to You!

Columnist will speak on his favorite Florida destinations By MARY BROTHERTON

The Backstage Pass Boomer Bash & Senior Expo, Nov. 8 will feature a free presentation by John Trieste on Florida Day Trips. He has been writing a monthly column for Senior Life, the sister publication to Viera Voice, since 2005. He introduces readers to inexpensive, educational and fun excursions that can be made in a day or two. Trieste said that he came up with the idea for his column because he and his late wife had many friends and relatives from the New York area who visited the Central Florida theme parks before stopping in to see them at their beachside condo. “In the course of conversation,” Trieste said, “they would mention they spent up to $5,000 on one week’s vacation for a family of four or five. In many cases this was at least one year’s savings for these folks.” Senior Life has published more than 80 articles featuring trips that can be made in a single day. Each one has his personal approval rating. He said his favorite day trip is from Route 192 beachside, south on A1A to Vero Beach. The most he has spent on a day trip was for admission to the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach. “It is well worth the price of admission, $15 for adults and $8 for children. This is an exceptional museum.” He estimates the average day trip costs less than $30

After a stint in the U.S Army, he had a lifetime career as a trade printer in the commercial printing industry. He is active within AARP, the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce, the New York State Club and several nonprofit organizations.
