They rush into burning buildings... and other emergency settings when everyone else is running out.

They are available around the clock at a moment’s notice. They have a show-and-tell affinity for children in awe of what they do.

Beyond that, does the average citizen really know how firefighters live?

For starters, there’s that superhuman 24-hour shift that is unwavering across the nation, with everyone on one of shifts A, B or C. Each shift is made up of the same team “family” members. Save for the time they are away on emergency calls, they work during their waking hours, doing training, putting in a required one-hour workout per day, keeping equipment clean and in working order.

And they sleep. Unless they get a call that may keep them up all night.

“There’s nothing like getting woken up with the sound of a bullhorn blasting in your ear. It gets your blood going like you wouldn’t believe, and your adrenalin is going because you know seconds count as you literally jump into your gear and move quickly to the vehicle and out the station, not knowing what you are going to face when you get to the call,” said Lt. Aaron Pritchard, leader of the “A” shift at Brevard County Fire Rescue (BCFR) Station 80 in Suntree. They all sleep in one great room divided up barracks style.

morning, with a bit of overlap as “B” shift settles in and “A” shift leaves, for example. Here’s what looks like the cherry part of the job: They don’t come back for 48 hours.

“That looks pretty great until you realize you will never have the same days off, ever,” said Christina Long, “B” shift firefighter at Station 80. “If you have a special family event or doctor’s appointment, unless you can get somebody from “A” or “C” shift to work an extra day to cover for you, too bad.”

While one-on, two-off sounds great, it averages out to 56 hours per week, 10 days per month at 24 hours a day. Station 80, with a shift size of five, may get 15 or more calls on a shift; other stations many more. Station 48 in Viera is among the busier, higher staffed ones because it is the county’s only special operations/hazardous materials responding and training station.

Firefighters consider themselves family, or a brotherhood, just as do police and military. Some actually are military. Station 80’s Ryan “Fish” Fisher,

like many firefighters and police officers, is reserve military and former active military. His unit, based at Patrick Air Force Base, will deploy in the coming year to Afghanistan and to the Horn of Africa, a base of medical operations for the war on terror in the Middle East.

Firefighters spend a third of their lives together.

For breakfast and lunch it’s everyone for themselves, but they always sit down to a family dinner, foisting off cooking duties on anyone willing or capable. On Christmas or other holidays when a shift must work, their families come to the station for the special meal.

“We have each other’s backs, we take care of our own. If someone needs a roof put on, we pitch in. If someone has child a who is sick, say cancer, everyone else puts in a shift so that person can be by their child’s side,” said Station 48’s Fergus “Baby” Kelly, so named for his diminutive size.

Nicknames are a measure of affection and are worn with pride, and once someone gets one, they are never called anything else. Those without nicknames are called by their last VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins name, never a first.

Johann Brockhausen of Station 80 sat down in what might be called a living room, with three long leather couches arranged in a C formation around a large flat-screen TV. The topic turned to his hair, kept long because his wife likes it that way.

“It sucks not being the prettiest one at the station,” Christina Long said. One male then tells another he has soft hands. “Thank you, I moisturize!” came the reply. Long tells them all to grow up. “That’s never gonna happen,” came the reply.

A typical career is 25 to 30 years. Due to low pay compared to risk and hard work ― $35,000 to start, topping out at $50,000 ― many have second jobs or must prepare for higher paying encore careers to provide for their families.

“It’s hard on the body. By the time you see 50 coming, Lt. Pam Rudnicki checks a hydrant at you’re ready to go,” said Station 47’s Lt. Pam Rudnicki, the station. She loves to bow hunt preparing for her encore career as a nurse anesthesiologist. while off-duty.

Female firefighters are rare; they must meet the same strength and endurance requirements as males, and must recertify on returning after child birth.

Despite the toil and risk ― 343 firefighters and paramedics were among the 2,977 killed on 9/11 with more continuing to die from complications ― the career draws more applicants than positions to fill.

“I love the excitement of running into a burning structure,” said Station 80’s Todd Olsen, just named BCFR Rookie of the Year.

“When you feel you were able to make a difference that saved somebody’s property, or even a life, there is no better feeling in the world.” VV The 9/11 annual memorial takes place at 5:30 p.m.

Weekend tribute remembers special decade of 1980s

Richard Hendry is behind what is sure to become a legendary weekend. Hendry and his family created 80s in the Park, a two-and-a-half-day celebration of everything from the 1980s.

“It’s the only ’80s festival on this planet,” Hendry said.

Starting with a film festival on Friday, Sept. 27 at Cinema World in Melbourne, Pendry promises a weekend filled with memories “old and new.”

Other events will occur at the Wickham Park Pavilion, at 3845 N. Wickham Road in Melbourne.

Eleven original bands from the 1980s and almost as many tribute bands will be nostalgic for some and will introduce the decade of feel-good music to others. Quiet Riot, Molly Hatchet and Tommy Tutone are set to rock the stage, as are bands playing tribute to AC/ DC, soul, rhythm and blues.

“Every year of the ’80s is represented,” Hendry said.

“These artists, combined, sold more than 75 million albums.”

Gallagher will be the guest emcee at 80s in the Park.

and “Sixteen Candles” will be available for autographs.

Scream queens, such as Kelly Maroney, and some of the movie directors will also attend the Horror Con and Cult Film Festival. Director David Pryor will present his world premiere of “Deadliest Prey”.

“You can hang out all weekend with celebrities, directors and band members,” Hendry said.

In addition to music and movies, the 1980s produced iconic videos, games, cars and flamboyant personalities such as the mustachioed, beretwearing inventor of the Sledge o’Matic. Gallagher will emcee the weekend as only he can.

“Gallagher will have a special interactive booth. You can go smash some watermelons and have your picture taken with him.” Hendry said.

There will be more opportunities for photos with replicas of cars made famous that decade, such as KITT, the talking car in “Knight Rider,” “Ghost Busters” Ecto 1 and The General Lee from “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Celebrity character look-alikes will add a touch of Hollywood realism to the photos.

Special tents will be set up for comic books and authors, collectibles and souvenir shirts. Other tents will host 1980s-era televisions hooked up to Nintendos and Ataris for a video flashback. A Rubik’s Cube contest will test dexterity and puzzle-solving skills.

Tickets for the full weekend are $39 for two people, with special upgrade tickets available for the prom afterparty on Saturday night with surprise guests, dancing, drinking, food and contests.

Laurie Stoeckert showed her appreciation of a neighbor’s heroic actions by corralling together neighbors and friends to welcome him home from the hospital last month, all huddled together under a drizzling sky. JJ McDonough cried at the sight.

“I’m just an average Joe. I haven’t done anything special. And here are all these wonderful people waiting to welcome me home,” said JJ, who had fallen and broken a hip, facing death twice since during recovery.

What heroic action did he take?

“He loves our children, the whole community’s children,” Stoeckert said.

It all happened in stealth mode. JJ and his old pup Betty Boop would go for their morning constitutional and nonchalantly show up early at the Tavistock Drive at Daintree Way intersection near his South Solerno neighborhood in Viera.

As children approached, JJ would command Betty Boop to lie down off to the grassy side and he’d stop traffic so the children could walk across.

“We finally figured out what he was doing, acting as a voluntary crossing guard, no red tape, no nothing, twice a day faithfully, morning and afternoon, like clockwork,” Stoeckert said. “Otherwise, he said he couldn’t sleep with worry.”

his regulars. The family moved in recently and the McDonoughs made sure they were strangers to no one, Stoeckert said. Along with the rest of the families in the area, they look forward to JJ making good on his word to get well and come back to “work.”

JJ’s wife, Barbara McDonough, straightened a framed thank-you letter on a wall in their home that is practically plastered with them, along with get-well cards and crafts.

“I had no idea we had so many friends,” she said with pride as she looked lovingly at her husband, a hero for other reasons as well.

JJ served as a Marine in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. His bones

have grown brittle over the years from exposure to Agent Orange. He’s never found without his veteran’s cap with Purple Hearts on it, not even while in his hospital bed.

While home, he broke out in song, as he does at the drop of a hat, singing in a vibrato. “I love you, yes I do,” from the old standard, “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie.” He stopped mid-note when someone referred to him as a G.I. and teased him about his singing.

“I’m not a G.I., I’m a Jarhead, get it right or I’ll send some of my Marine buddies after you!” he teased back, then sighed audibly, “I guess not everybody’s got good taste in music.” VV

Downton Abbey party, arts showcase highlight month for busy florist This year’s wedding season is waning down for Link Johnsten, but the owner of Eau Gallie Florist is still quite busy in September with two unique back-to-back events.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, Johnsten will provide the red carpet and some of the elaborate floral arrangements that will appropriately set the stage for a Downton Abbeyinspired Evening of Elegance hosted by Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. The event is a fundraiser for Divine Mercy Catholic radio station, which has more than a million listeners from Titusville to beyond Stuart.

“Tickets are going very fast,” said Elaine McGavern, chairperson of the event.

“There is a huge following for Downton Abbey. This is also a gorgeous venue with a capacity for 300 guests and we expect that many.”

Johnsten will have to hop to the King Center for the Performing Arts the day after Evening of Elegance, for he is one of the organizers of the annual Cultural Arts Showcase, expected to draw several thousand people.

Previously held outdoors in the Eau Gallie Arts District, the Showcase is moving this year to the indoor venue of the King Center.

“We have reinvented the event in a weather-protected venue,” Johnsten said.

The free celebration includes a family concert presented by the Brevard Symphony Orchestra and live performances from many of the more than 40 cultural organizations expected to participate. The Showcase takes over the King Center, from lobby and Main Stage to Rotunda and Black Box, Theatre from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22. Outside under the pines, more than 20 food trucks will offer a selection of gourmet and traditional fare.

“Everything is free but the food trucks,” Johnsten said.

“It will be a fantastic cultural opportunity for the community.” VV

‘Digital art’ turns history into futuristic fun

Think of an art gallery and what comes to mind may be classic to bold oil paintings on the walls, maybe a sculpture here and there.

That would definitely not be the Viera Art Gallery, which recently moved up to a larger space at The Avenue Viera.

Digital artist and photographer Jerry Hanzl will be featured at the opening of “Art and

Technology” from 6 to 9 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 14 complete with “techno” refreshments.

The gallery hosts an opening the second Saturday of each month.

Hanzl’s Adobe Photoshop artworks and the best works of other artists represent a fusion of art and technology, gallery director Suzan Brooks said.

“Jerry is a (gallery) founder and his art is represented prominently at Art Gallery

of Viera,” Brooks said.

Hanzl is renowned for his genealogical, family-heirloom art, including the ‘Taylor Family” panels and other commissioned work.

The above photos represent people being “part of the art.” The first is the bright, airy interior

of the new, larger gallery.

The second is an artistically altered photo to include all the audience members at Hanzl’s first techno art show, some of them displayed creatively in place of the ceiling, with a few other notto-scale images thrown in.

“I like to have fun with art and I think others enjoy it also,” Hanzel said. He shared a favorite quote by Friedrich Nietzsche to illustrate the feeling: “Those who were

Groups get taste for tickets to Suntree benefit

Frank Bradley and Tony Love make a dynamic duo.

Together, they divide and conquer the Suntree/Viera community for the sake of children and businesses in the area.

They use their many civic associations and community groups to sell tickets to the annual Suntree Rotary Club charity fundraiser, The Great Tastes at Suntree, to be held Saturday, Oct. 12. The Rotary covers Suntree and Viera.

Bradley and Love are charter members of many of those groups, and founders or co-founders of a number of them, including Suntree Rotary in 1985. They are charter members of their churches, Bradley at Hope Episcopal Church and Love at Suntree United Methodist Church, both of which were established first and Suntree and Viera communities continually rose around them. They and other large churches in the area act as much as community centers as houses of worship, allowing for even more group associations for Bradley/ Love ticket sales.

“You can tell we’re heading

into fall because the first thing you see at any meeting you go to is Frank and Tony with their hands stuffed with tickets, practically reaching for my wallet,” said Rev. Bill Kearney, a member of a community-prayer breakfast Bradley started a quartercentury ago that meets at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday mornings at Niki’s Family Restaurant in Suntree.

Kearny, Bradley and Love also attend monthly meetings of Suntree/ Viera Area Association of Churches, which pools funds and volunteers to tackle large outreach projects. The founder? Bradley. While some members are retired, most are younger, with an average age of 43.

Marshall Frank of Viera ran out of adjectives to describe the promising talent of students he helps find the way to national stages and orchestra pits, so he decided to narrate a YouTube video that shows what words cannot tell.

Frank is president of the Creative Arts Foundation of Brevard, which will host its inaugural Music on the Hill concert of the season at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 at Unitarian Fellowship Hall off U.S. 1, at 3115 Friendship Place just north of the Suntree area.

“The talents of these young people have to be experienced to be believed,” Frank said. “Imagine where they can go from here.”

The concert will be emceed by Hayley Vervalin of Suntree, who will sing a number of songs. Emily Deruelle, also of Suntree, will also perform. Both girls are students at Viera High School and veterans of the Cocoa Village Playhouse. Up to two additional performers will be VIERA VOICE Photo added to the program.

The Children’s Hunger Project puts ready-to-eat meals in the backpacks of hungry children so they may eat during the weekend gap between free breakfast and lunch at school.

Paws and Stripes is a partnership between the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Brevard County Animal Services and Enforcement, the Central Brevard Humane Society and the SPCA of North Brevard. It matches up carefully selected and trained jail inmates with dogs that have been deemed “unadoptable” to ready them for new homes.

NOS will host its Welcome Coffee at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Suntree Country Club.

“We encourage anyone to join, not just Suntree residents,” Carney said.

Upcoming events include a Dec. 5 holiday luncheon with prize drawings, a Fun ’50s party at the Holiday Inn Viera on Feb. 22, and a Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show April 10. All events but the Fun ’50s party are at Suntree Country Club.

After a road trip to Alabama with his wife and daughter, former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell was ready for some guy talk in Viera.

The three-time Pro Bowl signal-caller had just finished moving his daughter to Tuscaloosa for her senior year at the University of Alabama, and now he faced a long ride back to Florida with his wife, Stacy.

“For 17 hours, I could go nowhere,” Brunell said to knowing laughter from hundreds of men gathered July 28 at Church at Viera. The time spent was a delight for his wife, but a well-chosen investment for him. “That’s 8 ½ hours of conversation up and 8 ½ hours back. I was OK with that, until my wife made me sing love songs.”

Brunell, 42, who led the Jaguars to a pair of AFC championship games and later won a Super Bowl ring with the New Orleans Saints, was guest speaker at “Attributes of Extraordinary Men,” an evening of food, games and fellowship for the church’s men’s group. Men from across the community also were invited.

A devout Christian, Brunell shared his story of faith, on-thefield triumphs and off-the field

ordeals. The Los Angeles native also listed principles he said can help other men lead more fulfilling lives.

“We were created to be extraordinary,” he said. “I hope we are called to greatness. We are the most influential person under our roof.”

The former University of Washington star, who went on to throw for 32,072 yards and 184 touchdowns during a 16-year NFL career, said men need to balance work and home life, become experts in their chosen fields through research and by seeking advice from successful people, rekindle a sense of adventure, find time for fun and laughter and cultivate friendships with other men.

Brunell’s best buddy, he said, is former Jaguars left tackle Tony Boselli, the team’s first-ever draft pick in 1995.

“We’re closer than brothers,” Brunell said of the Jaguars Hall of Famer. “We get together once a week. During the four toughest times of my life, he was there.”

One of those times was in 2010, when Brunell was forced to declare bankruptcy after having invested in several

failed real-estate and business acquisitions.

“If I didn’t have my relationship with Jesus Christ, if I didn’t have Tony Boselli, if I didn’t have my support staff, my wife and my pastor, I wouldn’t have made it through,” said Brunell, who earned an estimated $52 million during his pro career.

The ordeal led Brunell, now head football coach at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville, to eventually start work on a book recounting his misfortune.

“Why would I want to share those things? Basically this: to keep people in my life, and people I come in contact with from doing the same thing that I did,” Brunell said. “That is why I’m here, to share my scars with you.”

Brandon Rieb, pastor of spiritual growth at the church, called Brunell’s message “powerful.”

“I hope the guys take even one little bit of what Mark said home with them,” Rieb said.

Intern calls courthouse experience ‘eye opening’

At the beginning of the summer, 16-year-old Jessica Saad decided the best way to learn more about becoming a lawyer was through observation. After spending her school summer vacation months on the fourth floor of the Moore Justice Center in Viera, Saad said she is even more determined to have a career in the legal profession.

“After observing this summer, I think I want to specialize in criminal defense,” Saad said. “I could see myself working for the state.”

The Viera High School junior created her own unofficial internship of sorts. Saad designed her own learning experiences by simply showing up and listening. She chose which hearings and trials to sit in on by looking at the Brevard Clerk of Courts website. On a few occasions, she was even present during jury selection — a process that she found incredibly fascinating.

“All of the courtrooms I sat in are open to the public,” Saad said. “Some days, I would come in the morning and be ready to leave by early afternoon. Some days, I was intrigued by a particular case and stayed here all day long.”

Saad was not able to sit in on any family or juvenile court proceedings because

Saad said she is inspired to move forward with a law career because of the many great examples in her own life. Her uncle is a judge in the Middle East, and she has also learned a lot from judges she has encountered this summer.

Her own neighbor is a law school student and has given Saad advice on what college courses to pursue as an undergrad.

“It has been really nice to have encouragement from other people who are already in the field,” she said. “I have received a lot of good and practical advice so far.”

In addition to career tips, Saad has learned a lot about the human side of criminal cases, particularly when families are affected by drug use. She also has become more aware of her own community and surroundings.

“I never knew there was so much going on right here in Brevard County. This experience has really opened my eyes to think about my own safety and really be aware of what is happening

Optimism surrounds Viera football program

They will be young, that’s for sure. But that doesn’t mean the Viera High School football team doesn’t have reason to be optimistic coming into this season.

“We had a great summer. Guys worked out hard, had great attendance. Coming into the season, I expect a lot.”

The biggest question for Viera this season will come up front, where the offensive and defensive lines will feature virtually all new players. In addition, they’ll have two new coaches with impressive backgrounds.

Former Palm Bay High and University of Florida standout Joe Cohen is coaching the defensive line, while another former Gator, Jason Watkins, will coach the offensive line.

Both players have national championship rings.

Senior quarterback Cody Dentmon has a year of experience as a starter under his belt, which should be a big boost for the Hawks this season.

“We have some good, young skill guys. I need them to grow up, and if they grow up, we have a chance,” Mays said.

The Hawks will have a new district lineup this season with Eau Gallie, Martin County, Melbourne and Sebastian River making up what should be a pretty competitive group.

The Hawks played their Kickoff Classic Aug. 22 against Merritt Island, before hosting Rockledge in the season opener Aug. 30.

Viera, which went 1-8 last year, feels like it has something to prove to the rest of the county.

“I think we have to prove that we’re a better team than everyone thinks we are and that we’re definitely better than last year,” Stengel said. “I’m willing to prove that this year.” VV CHRISTIAN OWNED COMPANY

Young Hawks could surprise

Volleyball season may just be starting, but the Viera High Hawks have their eyes set on the back end of their schedule.

Not only does the district title comes into play for the Hawks then, it’s also when a young, inexperienced team should be playing its best.

“I only have three players who were on last year’s varsity squad, so we’re talking about a whole new team dynamic,” Viera coach Sarah Spinner said. “When you have a team that doesn’t know each other … volleyball is all about team chemistry, and learning each other, playing next to each other, timing with the setters and middles. It all takes time.

That’s what I keep telling them: Keep working hard with the end in mind.”

Spinner will count on those three returning players, including four-year starter Alex Bynum, to help lead the way. Bynum, a senior outside hitter, is a tri-captain with senior middle blocker Tyler Fells and junior libero Marisol Murray.

“We’re young, but we have a lot of potential, a lot of talent,” Bynum said. “… A lot of the

stuff we took for granted last season, we can’t this season.

We lost a lot of our good (defensive players). We don’t have as many passers as we did last season.”

What the Hawks do have, however, is a good, enthusiastic group that is looking to get better each day.

That attitude will be a key to the season for Viera.

“We all have motivation and dedication, actually committing to put the work in,” Fells said.

Among the key new players are freshman setter Nina Alvarez and sophomore setter Lina Ruiz. Cailea Gibbs, a sophomore middle blocker, just moved to Viera from Kansas and could have a big impact.

New volleyball coach has Tigers motivated

There is … well, they call it a gap … on the Holy Trinity girls volley district championship banner that hangs in the gymnasium.

This season, with a new coach and some extra motivation, the Tigers have their sights set on reclaiming that district title after their three-year run was snapped last season.

“We have some high expectations,” new coach Pete Klonowski said. “We’re going to try to stop that … where that gap is on our district championship banner. They had a pretty good run going, and then last year, it ended.

“It’s time to start a new streak. Everything’s new. The whole coaching staff is new.

That’s one of our team goals.

We want to get a district championship. That’s where we’re going to start.”

Klonowski was an assistant coach at what is now called Eastern Florida State College.

He is stressing fundamentals and footwork for the Tigers and he is also working to put the Tigers into gamelike conditions in practice so that when they experience a big moment during the regular season, they’ll be well prepared.

“We get a lot more done, and everyone’s focused,” senior co-captain and outside hitter Gabby Dixon said. “The team is motivated to get better each practice, each day.”

Middle hitter and senior cocaptain Chelsea Pruitt pointed out there is more team unity this season.

“There’s no two groups on the team,” Pruitt said. “It’s one big team. Last year, we had that issue. It’s good that we all like each other, we all can communicate with each other.”

The team also features eight juniors, including defensive specialist Jenny Ryand and twins Jennifer (outside hitter) and Lizzy Hicks (defensive specialist).

“There is not a drop in talent on this team,” Klonowski said.

“We are very deep. We’ve got 12 people and for the most part, we could put a lineup out there of any of the six and I’d be comfortable.”

The Tigers opened their season Aug. 29.

“I feel like if everybody puts in the effort and everybody contributes on the team with their skills, we can be really successful,” Dixon said. VV

In group play, Space Coast defeated Genoa, Ohio 9-6 before falling to the Renegades of St. John, Fla. 5-3 and to the Lightning Boys of Lehigh, Fla. 8-0. Space Coast then lost 6-5 to the Barcelona-Chelsea Juniors of Pensacola. After group play, Space Coast was placed in the eight-team bronze division.

Space Coast placed third in the division with a 2-1 record after an 8-2 victory against Genoa, a 2-1 loss to MS-VG Blue of of Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens and a 7-5 victory against CFJ G-Style of

Sports give students edge on competitive play

Susan Wynter is giving her son the edge.

Sports and competitive play in schools both start at middle school, which means that children in elementary school who have experience in sports, especially league play, will be on the short list for an even shorter list of slots for team play.

Tall and lean, Quest Elementary School fourthgrader Brayden Wynter already has genetics on his side should he choose to pursue basketball beyond simple love of the game.

“He loves it, so we will do what we can to encourage him and help him, as long as he continues to show an interest,” Wynter said as she dropped off Brayden for a summer basketball camp last month at Eastern Florida State College’s Melbourne campus, the closest to the Viera/Suntree area.

The Wynters and other parents like them have the right idea, said EFSC men’s assistant basketball coach and recruiting coordinator Chris Ronan. He also helps coordinate the camp, Titans Basketball Hoops Academy, which is held at the times when Brevard Public Schools are off.

“It’s really important that children learn the skills

“From the time a child can take a step or bounce a basketball,” Ronan said, “we are on the lookout talent we can nurture through feeder schools and onto the courts to help us in our championship wins.” VV

Participation in extracurricular sports in preparation for team play is not inexpensive. However, Ronan said, parents in need can still give their children the edge by seeking out scholarships to community and private programs, especially if they are willing to give of their time to volunteer, or to work with their children on or in the court, field, pool, mat or any other place a sport calls home.

For EFSC, the camps are a communityminded opportunity to teach children basic to intermediate skills, and an opportunity for current EFSC players to gain coaching skills. The fees also offset costs for the program.

However, there is an ulterior motive.

The school has been set ablaze since 2010 under new coach and camp director Jeremy Shulman.

Tigers expect to throw more passes in 2013

The Holy Trinity Tigers will have more speed, which should lead to more big plays this season.

An influx of speed and a mixture of youth should make for some exciting offensive performances by the Holy Trinity football team this season.

“We’re going to throw the ball more this year than I’ve probably ever thrown it as a head coach or offensive coordinator because that’s what (the talent) dictates,” Tigers coach Mark Ainsley said.

“You’re going to see some different things out of us. Last year, I thought if we get down 21-0, we’re kind of done. This year, you can’t count us out.”

The graduation of three offensive linemen means Holy Trinity will rely on a

trio of freshmen — Peyton Wallington, Hunter Altman and J.R. Rauhofer — to join veterans Dan O’Brien and Garrett Heinlen up front.

Holy Trinity added a pair of speedy senior transfers in running back Alex Bouie and cornerback Stevie Ralph, who should have a big impact and increase the big-play capability on both sides of the ball.

Junior quarterback Dan Welch, who split time as a sophomore, steps into the full-time starting role with experience and a couple of solid receivers, including one the team compares to Denver Broncos receiver Wes Welker.

“We’re looking for great things (from Welch),” Ainsley said. “He had a great summer,

and we’ve got two big receivers in J’Von Butler and Cam Osmond. Cam doesn’t look like much, but he’s very quick. He’s about 5-7. We

call him Welker. We’re very excited about what these guys can do.”

The Tigers are coming off a strong showing in their summer program and expect to see steady improvement as the season goes along.

“We definitely improved majorly from earlier this summer,” O’Brien said. “We lifted a ton this summer. The spring game could have gone a little better than it did, but we learned a lot from it, so we expect to definitely (improve by) leaps and bounds compared to that.”

The schedule should favor

the Tigers in that all of their district games will be played on the back end, giving Holy Trinity plenty of time to gain both experience and cohesion.

The Tigers went 7-3 last season, but just missed out on the playoffs following a onepoint loss to rival Melbourne Central Catholic. The 10 seniors are determined to get back to the postseason.

“That’s what my motivation is, and I’m sure if you asked any other player on this team, it would be theirs, too,” O’Brien said. VV

or wading is important to maintain muscle strength as your pet ages. It can help combat the decrease in mobility brought on by DJD. Although there is not enough space to list all the medications frequently used to treat DJD, I will mention a few of the more common ones.

Supplements such as fish oil or glucosamine and chondroitin may help joint maintenance and slow the progression of DJD. For dogs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as carprofen or firocoxib decrease inflammation and pain in the joints. NSAIDs are frequently paired with a pain medication such as tramadol for additional relief.

Remember, the majority of human antiinflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen are not safe for use in pets.

The changes that occur in the joint due to DJD are not reversible, so the goal of therapy is to make the patient as pain-free as possible. The condition usually becomes worse over time, but the progression varies from pet to pet.

Every case is unique, and additional or different testing or treatments may be appropriate for your pet’s particular situation. Talk to your veterinarian about specific options to treat DJD and help keep your cat or dog on the move for a long time to come. VV

Professional wrestling star Devon Hughes will raise funds for Hope for a Single Mom in a family friendly event: Body Slammin’ Breast Cancer, joined by famed wrestler Hulk Hogan.

Three years ago, Brevard County resident Denise More was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy which required many weeks of recovery and time off of work.

Her income suffered and the bills piled up. Her sister, Donna Sullivan, tried to work with the bill collectors, but it was like pulling teeth.

“I had never thought about it before until it hit in my own backyard, but when a single mom is diagnosed, she is the only income producer in the family,” Sullivan said.

She teamed up with the women in her Mary Kay group, selling lots of lipstick and donating part of the profits to help More keep her home and her car. When others in Brevard learned of this, they started helping to raise money to help More and her family.

Banding together as a

community, they raised more than $5,000 and gave it to Sullivan at a special dinner.

The money was counted directly into her hand.

“It was the most unbelievable feeling to know that others care so much,” Sullivan said.

She vowed to her sister that she would beat her cancer and pay it forward to other local single moms.

The single mothers are selected with care by a team of volunteers, including board directors of Hope for a Single Mom and their friends at Breast Friends of Florida. Breast Friends, a nonprofit organization in Brevard County, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for women fighting breast cancer and other women’s cancers.

Last year, the single mom fund recipient was Jennifer Brown. More and Sullivan teamed up with many Brevard

residents to raise more than $11,000 for Brown.

“It was an event I will never forget,” Brown said.

Hope for a Single Mom is already hard at work with an even larger team of Brevard friends and business owners to pay it forward in 2013. The goal is to help not just one, but several single moms. For the second year, the Hope for a Single Mom team has joined forces with professional wrestling star Devon Hughes in a family friendly event: Body Slammin’ Breast Cancer. He’ll bring fellow star Hulk Hogan.

Hughes, of TNA Impact Wrestling fame, has committed to body slam breast cancer in the ring at the Melbourne Auditorium Saturday, Sept. 14. Music and refreshments start at 5 p.m. and wrestling starts at 7 p.m..

All profits from will be donated to single moms fighting cancer here in Brevard County.

SCHOOL Viera student has ‘life-changing’ experience as volunteer

Viera High senior Aaron Kirschenbaum, left, has put in a lot of volunteer hours during the past few years.

But helping out John Golob Jr. has been a life-changing experience.

Aaron Kirschenbaum estimates he has spent hundreds and hundreds of hours volunteering his time around the Viera community.

But the Viera High senior has never had an experience like the one he’s been getting while helping out 82-year-old John Golob Jr. Since volunteering at the start of summer to help the Indian River Colony Club resident, a Korean and Vietnam war veteran who is legally blind, Kirschenbaum has done … well, just about everything.

He’s helped Golob organize files, ordered a specially designed phone for seniors called a Snapfone and is even working on designing a new address book that will

make it easier to find contact information.

He’s been a chauffeur, driving Golob not just to Orlando, but even making a trip up to his cabin in Georgia.

On top of all that, he even served as the proofreader and made a number of trips back and forth to the printer to help Golob publish a book titled, “Our DAV Dad.” The not-for-profit book, which Golob wrote for family descendants, is about his father, who was a founder of the Disabled American Veterans organization. “(Golob) always says how I’ve helped him,” Kirschenbaum said. “I think he’s helped me out a ton. It’s a life-changing experience he’s been able to give to me.

ride to Georgia … how he got a Silver Star. I know he doesn’t like to talk about it, but he has these amazing stories that will go down in history.

“I have the honor to be able to help him, be part of his life.”

Golob, who said he drove his golf cart to Viera High to ask if there were any students who would be willing to volunteer to help him, has been quite impressed with Kirschenbaum and believes he has a bright future.

“Absolutely fabulous,” Golob said. “It really is. He’s shown an attitude that’s going to breed success. No question.”

When he’s not volunteering with Golob, or at the school, Kirschenbaum has his own business as a DJ. He’s also vice president of the drama club.

It’s not often these days that young people have the drive to volunteer their time for others, but Kirschenbaum really fits that mold.

“I like being part of it,” he said. “I like getting thank you notes in the mail from people that I’ve helped. It brings me joy. I really do enjoy it.” VV

There always is excitement for the first day of school but that excitement is 10 times greater for opening day for a brand new facility like Viera Charter School.

Add to that the high demand, a return to normal for many parents, and you have one very happy facility.

Viera Charter School board chairman Robert Jordan was there to greet each student as they entered school.

“We’ve had such a great turnout and the parents are extremely excited about us. We had about 1,700 applications and unfortunately, with class sizes we’ll end up with about 640 students. The response has been excellent,’’ Jordan said.

Some parents of younger students helped with the milestone day through tears, both the students’ and their own. Others were happy the big day was finally here.

“Most of the parents are pretty relieved that summer is over and we’re going to take care of their kids. I like it,’’ Jordan said.

“We met the teacher the other day at orientation and she gave us jitter glitter and there was a poem that talked about getting a good night sleep the night before. It was really cool,’’ Dusty Rhodes said.

Parents pinned on name tags as “Mrs. Z” scrambled to get all of her 18 students settled in their new places.

The halls are filled with students, parents, teachers and staff, many carrying supplies needed for the school year.

Nearly holding back tears was Stephanie Werkeiser who was helping her son Blaine get his name tag on with his younger sister Addyson, 3, in tow. She brought flowers for Mrs. Z. “Mom might end up crying.

I cried all day yesterday. This is my first child to go to school and I’m sad. I’m excited for him but sad for me,’’ she said.

“I am thrilled,’’ Mrs. Z said as the children took their seats.

“The school looks awesome.

Dorcas Circle embraces those in need with an attic treasures and bake sale

Suntree United Methodist Church’s Dorcas Circle group will hold an attic treasures and bake sale at the church to benefit many local charities on Oct. 12.

In years past, SUMC’s Dorcas Circle has had great success with their treasures and bake sales. According to Merle Gelles, one of the organizers of the event, this year should be no exception.

“We hope to have a great turnout for this worthwhile cause,” Gelles said.

For those not familiar with the Dorcas Circle, it consists of a group of women who sew, crochet, knit and bake for less fortunate families and individuals. Some of the items they create are

chemotherapy hats, prayer shawls, baby clothing, quilts and blankets and gift baskets.

They spend a lot of time trying to help those in need around the community.

The church is located at 7400 N. Wickham Rd. in Suntree. The sale will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

All proceeds will benefit local charities; including Daily Bread, Devereux residential school, the Salvation Army Women’s Shelter, Space Coast Center for Mothers with Children and the Make a Wish Foundation.

Donations of small appliances, cookware, glassware, antiques and collectibles, seasonal items, jewelry, bedding, linens, books, toys, sporting goods, pictures, mirrors, silk

Viera and Suntree residents now have another fitness option — and one that comes with spiritual side effects.

In August, Trinity Fitness opened at the Suntree Business Center, at the back of the main building. The location offers nine metabolic conditioning circuit training classes per week, a technique that is similar to CrossFit but not affiliated.

It is the sixth Trinity Fitness to open in Florida and the second in the Melbourne area.

Though each location has different clientele and offers a variety of classes, the mission of each is the same: combining physical and spiritual training. “We see fitness as just one aspect of our gyms,� said the Suntree location’s facilities director, Rylan McCart. “It has physical benefits for this life, but our spiritual mission has benefits for the next life.�

denominational but are Christian and Biblebased. Every class opens with a devotional and prayer. Right now, the Suntree location is working through the devotional “Jesus Calling� by Sarah Young.

There are no membership fees or contracts at any Trinity Fitness locations; members are asked to give based on what they can afford to keep the gym operating. In a welcome note from the non-profit’s board of directors, a $50 per month donation is suggested but no one is ever turned away because of a lack of financial resources.

Christina Puleio was excited when she heard there was a Trinity Fitness opening in Suntree.

Her sister is involved in the beachside location, but the drive made it tough for Puleio to get to classes regularly. “This is my fourth time coming in the week Trinity Suntree has been open,� she said. “I like having the other people in class to encourage me. It is a lot different than a normal gym in that regard.� VV

This month, Pilates Center of Viera will celebrate its fifth anniversary. The business got an early anniversary upgrade this summer when it moved into a 1,600-squarefoot studio in the Suntree Business Center at 3370 Suntree Blvd., Unit 102-A. Owner Amy Peters is thrilled about the new spot.

“We have great visibility here and the response has already been so positive,” she said.

With a background in dance, Peters said becoming a certified Pilates instructor more than a decade ago was a natural progression.

“I love movement and fitness, and Pilates blends both perfectly for me,” she said.

Peters and three other instructors teach 20 group classes per week and also offer private, individual sessions in the studio. Peters estimates that as many as 50 people walk through the door every day the center is open.

There are no membership requirements and people can pay per class with a punch card.

For those unfamiliar with Pilates, Peters says it is a very simple concept: core work that focuses on quality of movement, not quantity.

Gym a ‘grand’ time for all

When Jill Youngkin started working at Gymboree seven years ago, she said it was because she enjoyed interacting with children.

“I love working with them and their parents and grandparents,” she said.

Cristina Giammarinaro is one of those parents. She is also co-owner and business manager at the gym.

When the business was first available for sale, the two women bought the only franchise of its kind in Brevard County.

Gymboree is for children ages 4 weeks to 5 years. “It is a busy place, filled with happy kids who participate in organized activities like singing, reading, creative play on gymnastic equipment, exercise, art and dance,” Youngkin said.

Parents and grandparents often participate with the children, which makes it a family activity as well.

Beverly Owens attends her grandsons’ Gymboree experience several days a week.

“The boys love to play and interact with the other children here and they are learning so much about art, music and sharing with others,” she said.

Programs are age appropriate for each group.

“They actually learn from one another by observing interactions between various children and teachers,” Youngkin said.

Owens said that her two grandsons are very excited when they know they are going to Gymboree.

“It is one of their favorite things to do.”

Classes in art and music encourage creativity at appropriate levels.

“Art is always open expression rather than disciplined,” said Giammarinaro. “The children are encouraged to draw or paint or create whatever they wish rather than follow guidelines established by us.”

Music classes are offered by level of experience or age

appropriateness. Children also set the tone for what they wish to do during play time.

“The children just love it when the teachers laugh and sing with them,” Owens said.

“The staff at Gymboree is a lot of fun.”

Gymboree is open seven days a week, with accommodations for working families. Birthday parties are offered on weekends with various themes chosen by the child.

It’s a long way, distance wise, from the Space Coast of Florida to a barren hillside in Korea, but the time difference between 2013 to Easter Sunday, 1951 puts it in perspective.

Riding in a Sherman Tank, the lead tank in a five-tank platoon, it took a hit during a battle, and with shrapnel flying, Frank Trent was wounded and should have been awarded the Purple Heart shortly thereafter. But due to the “fog of war” and lost records, it took 62 years and the efforts of Congressman Bill Posey to set the record straight. And on Aug. 16, with shrapnel still in his leg from that long-ago battle, Frank Trent received his Purple Heart medal at the government complex in Viera.

Surrounded by his wife, JoMarion and numerous family members and friends, Congressman Bill Posey pinned the Purple Heart Medal on this 84-year-old Army veteran, now living in Indialantic.

Eighth District Congressman Posey has long been an advocate of the U.S. military and veterans rights and has worked to correct errors and to set the record straight.

“It is because of brave Americans like Frank Trent, and those he served with, that our nation and liberties have endured the test of time and can be passed on to future generations,” Congressman Posey said.

The Moms Club established its Rockledge/Viera chapter in 2003 as the support group, Moms Offering Moms Support.

Club president Martha Krishna said, “The club has been a lifesaver. When I moved to Viera two years ago, I was desperate to find other moms.”

The group offers support for mothers who stay at home full or part-time with children of all ages.

Krishna said, “I’ve never been so social since college.”

The club has a calendar filled with daily activities that go beyond visits to the park.

Vice president Jacque Gilliam said, “We go to the zoo for Paws-on, and have a program we call Hoot and Howl. We take our kids out for lunches together, and we have a community services aspect. We recently held a baby shower for Alternative Pregnancy Center in Merritt Island.”

Krishna said, “We stay so busy, my husband gets a little jealous.”

The playgroups place children of similar ages together.

“The playgroups are great,” Krishna said. “The kids bond.

It’s so laid back” Gilliam said, “It’s been wonderful to be with a group of girls who have kids my son’s age. We get to watch our kids grow up together and go to school together.”

Krishna said that the mothers call or text each other for support and advice.

“It becomes a necessity for moms with husbands who deploy or travel with their jobs,” she said.

Once a month, the group has a mom’s night out.

“We let our husbands deal with it,” Krishna said.

Gilliam said the mothers often baby-sit for one another.

“One mom has five kids. Her oldest is 16, so we sometimes have the teenager baby-sit. We know we can trust her.”

Annual membership is $20 and is open to mothers who live within the 32955 zip code area.

“I feel there are a lot of women who don’t know about this group and could use the support,” Krishna said.

Zebra Longwing Butterfly

The state butterfly of Florida is the medium-sized zebra longwing, a yearround resident. It displays elongated narrow black wings adorned with pale yellow stripes. A ventral view of the wings discloses paler color, comparable pattern, and small red spots near the body.

There are several stages in the approximate three-week cycle of life that results in an adult. Initially, the male butterfly selects a female.

After mating, he expels a chemical on the female to discourage other males. Five to 15 miniscule eggs are laid.

An egg becomes a caterpillar (larva). The caterpillar pupates. Emerging from the pupa (chrysalis) is the exquisite zebra longwing.

Obviously intelligent, this butterfly readily returns to food sources (trap lining) and roosting sites. Roosting occurs in large clusters, often

on tree limbs. Woodlands, forest margins, hammocks, and yards are regularly frequented.

Survival depends on plants.

Numerous flowers supply essential nectar, including the wild balsam apple blossom (photograph: Nikon D-600 settings, 1/60 s., f5.0, ISO400). Furthermore, this butterfly feeds on pollen.

Its saliva ably dissolves pollen, and the protein in pollen presumably increases its lifespan to an amazing six months instead of the few weeks typical of other butterflies. Also significant are passion flower vines, larval host plants. When the adult female lays her eggs on the leaves and tendrils, the forthcoming ravenous caterpillars feed on these leaves.

Nectar and host plants are usually situated in part shade because the black wings of this butterfly absorb substantial heat when utilizing these plants.

Fortunately, at times

predation is averted. When the caterpillar consumes the toxic passion flower vine leaves, toxin is transmitted to the ensuing butterfly; both are foul tasting to predators.

In addition, the adult’s stunning color and pattern proclaim toxicity. Also, though not easily startled, this butterfly might release a creaking sound if disturbed.

At the Viera Wetlands, one can appreciate this insect.

Gracefully and slowly it flies, seemingly floating from flower to flower. VV
