Last year, the school received a $9,000 donation. In addition, there will be the Great Golf Cart Charity Raffle, where the lucky winner will receive a Yamaha Drive golf cart valued at $6,500. The prize was donated by GolfCarts Unlimited, with the cart wrapped by Wrap Giants. The raffle is separate from the races with those proceeds going to benefit the Special Olympics of Brevard, Space Coast Early Steps and the Suntree-Viera Youth Football League. Tickets are $5 each, three for $10 or 20 for $50. Acosta is eager to give back to the Viera community that has helped support his business. “It was the right thing to do,” he said The cost of the event is $20 for those who pre-register before April 22 and $25 for those who register afterward. Registration forms are at Viera Pizza, or online at VieraPizza.com/EMC.htm. For those who love to eat post-race, the pizza buffet will be bigger this year, as well, Last year, people were actually able to take food home. There will also be bananas and muffins. Though he will not be running in this race, Acosta has become an avid runner the past three years. In fact, he and teammates Susie Meltzer, Dylan Knott, Josh Knowles, Brittany Streufert, David Schuermann, Matt McDougal and Randi Marshall finished third at the annual Corporate Challenge 5K last month. Acosta won the Male CEO division for the third straight year. With continued success, the Eat My Crust 5K is quickly becoming a Viera tradition. “We want to make it a community event and bring more people in to the Viera community,” Acosta said. “We want more people to see what we have to offer.” VV

Viera Elks golf classic helps fund various local charities By MARY BROTHERTON

Viera Elks Lodge #2817 holds an annual golf classic to support its charitable outreach. The 13th Viera Elks Charity Golf Classic will be held April 27 at Baytree National Golf Links located at 8207 National Dr. in Melbourne, just off Wickham Road. The Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks was founded shortly after the Civil War and is dedicated to helping children and veterans. “The tournament raises money for our lodge and in turn our lodge distributes funds to the many different projects that come up during the year,” Chairperson Karen Renzi said. Registration for individuals is $60 and is $240 for four-person teams. Registration includes greens fees, use of a cart, practice range, snacks and lunch. “Our main goals are to support the Florida Elks Youth Camp and the Children’s Mobile Therapy Units,” Renzi said. The Elks maintain 21 vans that provide inhome physical therapy for children in need. “Elks also sponsor youth programs to include hoop and soccer shoots, fund scholarships and participate in the DARE program to promote drug awareness,” Renzi said. Additionally, Viera Elks have provided Christmas dinner food baskets for 22 families from Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. The Elks not only held a party for them at the lodge, but fulfilled every wish on the children’s lists. “We have shipped hundreds of packages to our troops overseas,” Renzi said. “We support the veterans from the Veterans of America program in Cocoa and we invite Brevard County veterans to the lodge several times throughout the year.”

Renzi said she expects more businesses to step forward in the coming weeks to add to the growing list of prizes. The list already includes free membership at Baytree National Golf Links, rounds of golf at both Baytree and The Majors and many gift baskets such as the Inspiration Healing Spa or Japanese Cherry Blossom and several gift certificates for local restaurants. Smith takes over as first female VSLL president Pizza Gallery to form a youth equipment drive to help little league teams in the Dominican Republic. “On Opening Day … we ended up giving them more than 600 pieces of equipment,” Smith said. “It’s very exciting.” Holding events like that is just one more example of what both the kids and the community can get from being involved in little league. She

said, adding not only do kids learn about sportsmanship, they also learn the value of teamwork. “There are a lot of great things about little league,” Smith said. “They learn to respect authority. They learn patience. They learn how to be humble when things don’t go their way. They learn how to accept losing, and accept winning, in a good way. Sports

are a great thing.” Smith added that the sport could not succeed without volunteers. Parents are asked to volunteer to work one hour in the concession stand each season. In addition, there are 60 managers, 60 team moms, 11 people on an elected board and 20 on a regular board who all help make the VSLL go. VV

The first female league president Cris Smith sees a lot of potential in this year’s Viera/Suntree Little League, which began playing last month. “There’s a lot of talent in our league, that’s for sure,” the new league president said. With 60 teams and more than 670 children participating, there is a lot of talent to choose from this season. Smith, who has two sons in the league — 7-yearold Cole and 10-year-old J.T. — believes the two divisions to really watch out for once the All-Star season rolls around are in the majors. “The team that I’m really

excited about is our softball majors team,” she said. “We’ve got some very, very talented girls right in our majors division.” Last year, the boys majors team was made up mostly of 11-year-olds and went deep into the state tournament. “Now that they’re a little bit older, a little bit bigger and they’re practicing a ton, I think they’re going to do really, really well,” Smith said. Smith said being the first female president in the league’s history brings added pressure to perform. Things have gone well since she took over in September, she added. One recent event she is most proud of is a joint venture between the VSLL and

What started out as a fringe, cultural entity in New York is now a dance company suitable for people of all ages. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is a great introduction to dance, according to Tory Dobrin, artistic director for the group.

“A new dancer might not know is it is a lot of fun, but it is. It’s interesting and challenging. Audience response is like nothing else!”

The all-male ballet group, known worldwide as the Trocks, will perform at the King Center on May 1. “The audience can expect lots of laughing and dancing. I think that’s quite enough for one evening, don’t you?” Dorbin said. The Trocks have been making audiences laugh since 1974. Appearing in more than 30 countries, the group has impressed audiences in 49 of the 50 states as experienced men dance en pointe. Their comedic talent complements and highlights their skill as ballet dancers. Dorbin, who started as a dancer with the Trocks in

We’re here to tell the story of the Duda family, and the community of Viera,’’ said general manager Karla-Mae Goodman. “There is great growth and activity coming, and the Discovery Center will play a key role in providing information and updates on these changes.” Goodman, who had worked for Viera Realty since 2009 in sales and marketing support, supervised more than 20 agents in her past role. Carmen Vastola and Ana Rhodes will guide visitors at the new facility. Their knowledge of the area’s agricultural past and its development into a fun place to live should be helpful to anyone considering a move to the area.

Part of Viera’s appeal has been its controlled growth and a positive relationship between its businesses and residents. “Whenever a new business joins the community, we help them establish their marketing,’’ said Judi John, the manager of community relations. “We also encourage them to get involved with our local schools and offer their support by forming partnerships.” John has worked with the company for the past 16 years. “I am so proud to work for a company that cares about their residents and community in a genuine way,’’ John said. “While most developers finish a project and move on, the Viera Company continues to strengthen bonds. It’s more than a development. It’s the Duda’s family legacy.” The group knows that future residents have many choices of where to live in Brevard County. “We really wanted to shift the emphasis from selling a home to selling a community,” said Stephanie Byrd, the marketing manager for the center. “Our goals are to educate and inform, by letting every visitor know why Viera should be their No. 1 choice for places to live.” Byrd, who joined the company in 2007, initially worked in community relations. Her internet savvy led to a move to marketing, where she has bolstered the company’s use of social media and websites. Joane Dowd brings more than 23 years of marketing and promotional experience to her new role as event planner. She is an independent contractor and the owner of BOF Incorporated. Dowd, who is a personal friend of the Duda family, already has shown the ability to organize five events in four days, including the VIP ribbon cutting and an open house event for the public. A future Spring Fling and a countywide Christmas Parade with floats are planned.

As plans to expand Viera continue, the team of professionals at the Discovery Center will continue to play a viable role in building strong relationships with existing and future residents. Stop by and visit the friendly staff. Learn about the history of Viera and the visions of one American family, the Dudas, that have become a reality for many. VV

Elaine Scott Bridgman is a product of the product. The Merritt Island resident redesigned her own life after the death of her spouse, moving from insecurity to success on formerly threatened financial and emotional levels. Her new book, “How to be a Widow in Today’s World,” is a road map for others currently in the dark days of the journey. “The inability to function, and feeling stuck in a circle of despair, with or without grief, is a tragedy that is easily avoidable,” said Bridgman, host of an 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 23 luncheon and seminar at the Holiday Inn Viera entitled, “Redesigning Your Life, and Guarding Your Own Self Interest.” The cost is $40 and includes lunch, an audiobook and seminar resource folder. Walking through the grains of time from page 1

A sampling of viewer comments include: “Absolutely stunning! I’ve never seen anything like it! “It was amazing how much detail could be captured in a pile of sand. “It was amazing how in some of the scenes it felt like the characters were coming right at you. The sound exhibits were perfectly matched to each scene, making everything life-like. “I couldn’t get over the detail in the animals. It almost felt like they were going to move sometimes... especially the alligator. “I really enjoyed all the quotes and accompanying insight shared by the artists. The Brevard Zoo is a popular attraction for tourists, but the Art of Sand also gives local residents a great reason to visit again. The artists are all considered superstars in the professional sand sculpting arena. Some scenes can take up to one week and use several tons of sand. As they are creating, the artists design the piece to channel off any excess rainwater. Once the piece is complete, it is sprayed with a mixture of biodegradable glue and water, to protect it from reasonable attacks by wind and rain. Surprisingly enough, once built, the sculptures require very little maintenance. They are vulnerable to hurricanes and toddlers, so visitors should be mindful of exhibit boundaries. In addition to viewing the art, guests can participate in educational programs and handson activities for children, which include sand sculpting. There will also be opportunities to interact with the master sculptors that rendered the historical scenes. The Art of Sand was first exhibited in Cape Canaveral in May 2010, then moved to Space Coast Stadium in 2011, and this year finds a new home at the Brevard Zoo. Participating artists are: Jill Harris, United States; Thomas Koet, United States/Netherlands; Susanne Ruseler, Netherlands; IIya Filimontsev, Russia; Dan Belcher, United States; Brad Goll, United States; Karen Fralich, Canada; and Jim Richardson, United States. Matt Morrison is the head golf professional at Duran Golf Club in Viera. By George White

The Space Coast Amateur Championship at Duran Golf Club April 6 and 7 is expected to draw 100 of the best golfers of all ages to the Duran Golf Club, as well has hundreds of local spectators wanting to see the best for free. “It will feature some of the better college players as well as seniors and high schoolers. It’s our premier amateur event we have each year. People will recognize some of the past champions because they are pros,’’ said Duran PGA head golf professional Matt Morrison. The event, to be played over 36 holes, is open to the public. Amateurs of all skill levels are welcome to compete. The event will feature scratch flights, but handicap flights and a Senior Division are available as well. “We had 75 last year and we want it to grow to 100 or more so we are not going to cut it off,” he said. Those past champions include: 2012, Christian Westhorpe; 2011, Justin Kalanquin; 2010, Joey Latowski; 2009, Kevin Altenhof; 2008, Kyle Westhorpe; 2007, David Johnson; and 2006, Steven Taylor. The cost is $125, which is all inclusive for both days, including golf cart, range balls and lunch both days. Duran Golf Club in Viera is described as being “generous off the tee box” but makes up the difference in other ways, Morrison said. “It’s actually quite wide off the tee. The thing that makes this course tough is that the wind always seems to be blowing here. There’s nothing to protect it, and the greens are very undulating and have a lot of slope to them. The combination of the wind and the greens really are the teeth of the course,’’ he said. The final three holes are considered some of the toughest final stretches of any course in the area, he said. “It’s a real tough test coming down to the end,’’ he said. Duran Golf Club is located at 7032 Stadium Parkway. Special practice round pricing is available. To book practice round times or for more information, visit the website durangolf.com or call the golf shop at 321-504-7776. VV

SPORTS Holy Trinity tennis programs built for present, future By Carl Kotala

The present and the future look good for Holy Trinity’s boys and girls tennis programs. The boys team was off to a 10-2 start and working toward a potential district championship, while the girls team was 5-5 and budding with potential. “I think we have a very deep team, because positions one through five all are good, solid players, junior Hannah Shuman said of the girls team. “And we have good teamwork on doubles. Eighth-grader Savannah Kutryb is the girls No.1 player, followed by Shuman, senior Megan Bernier, sophomore Ravenel Rudd and sophomore Katie Merlin. Head coach Lorie Heinlin said she has a young team, but the players have been improving and the Tigers are hoping to reach the district finals this season. St. Edward’s of Vero Beach is the district favorite. Rudd, whose twin sister, Remy, is also on the team, also sees room for plenty of growth. She said her mental approach to the game has improved greatly this season. If the rest of the Tigers can continue to improve, they will definitely be a team to contend with down the road. “You can definitely tell the girls are improving throughout the year. Some of the girls that came out this year for the first time have never played tennis before, Shuman said. “Now, they really know how to play the game, and they’re having a great time. I’m excited for next year, because if they keep practicing, they can be really good. With only two seniors in its starting five, the Holy Trinity boys won’t be fading away anytime soon, either.

Pay-to-play expected to impact participation numbers By Carl Kotala

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Twin sisters Remy, left, and Ravenel Rudd are key members on this year’s Holy Trinity girls tennis team. The Tigers were off to a 5-5 start and looking to do well at the district tournament.

One of those seniors is No. 1 player Chris Suchoski, who is followed in the ladder by Matt Allison, eighth-grader Egan Kattenberg, senior Tanner Crouch, Nick Kieter and doubles specialist Spencer Sperando “My No. 1 and No. 2 guys are just about interchangeable, Tigers coach Mark Harrison said. “Chris can hold his own with anyone. In fact, Suchoski, a baseliner, had lost only three matches this season, which is quite a feat since he is playing against everybody’s best in every match. Allison and Kieter, meanwhile, had each lost just once this season. So not only are the Tigers deep, they’re obviously very talented as well. After a string of secondplace finishes in the district, the Tigers are hoping this is their year. “Absolutely, Harrison said. “We have the right team to win districts, for sure. VV

Viera High School’s athletic director Chris Gallagher is always looking for kids who fit the mold for a particular sport and encouraging them to try out. Come the fall ‌ it might not be as easy. In its effort to help erase a $30 million budget deficit, the Brevard County School Board has approved a plan that will charge student-athletes a fee to participate in sports starting this fall. Brevard County athletes will be charged $100 to play one sport. If they choose to play two sports, it would be another $50. There would be no charge to play a third sport. “It’s going to affect participation rates, there’s no question about it,â€? Gallagher said. Students who might be interested in undertaking a new sport, or are perhaps trying to make a decision between going out for a team or going out and getting a job may be pushed away from athletics. Then, of course, there are the families who are VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala already financially strapped as it is and may not be able to afford to let their kids play, even though there Viera High School’s athletic director, Chris Gallagher, has a vision for the Hawks will be a reduced fee for disadvantaged students. athletics program that may falter under the The general consensus is that the areas which new budget. could be most affected are the smaller sports like bowling and cross country, and girls sports, where it can be harder for teams to fill out a full roster without a little on-campus recruiting. Will that be as easy to do under the new policy? Only time will tell. Viera’s participation rates for varsity female athletes in 2012-13 are actually up compared to last year. In 2011-12, there were 272 male athletes and 187 females playing varsity sports. This year, there are 261 males and 195 females. For athletes with college athletic aspirations, the money may just be another price to pay. And with the fee—which Gallagher said will help pay for coaching supplements, not expected to go anywhere soon, it could become ‌ well, normal in a couple of years. It will be interesting to see, however, what kind of effect pay-to-play has on Brevard County sports come fall. VV ' ' # ' &' %( $! "' ')

The Viera High boys lacrosse team may have a new coach, but the Hawks are still proving to be a success story. Matt Sepesi, who served as the junior varsity coach under the program’s founder, Mark Lorusso, had the Hawks off to a 7-0 start midway through the season. “I’m riding this whole thing that Mark Lorusso brought here,” Sepesi said. “He started the program. I’m just riding his wave … with pride.” The Hawks were getting strong play from top players like senior midfielder Austin Wear, senior midfielder Zach Zippi, junior attacker Alex Lenk and senior defender Tyler Baez. Also having an excellent season are junior defenders Joe Bowen and

Defensively, we’re a unit. We know where our slides should be.” Viera’s early success has certainly given the Hawks plenty of confidence as they prepare to head into the teeth of their district schedule. “I think we have a really strong chance to be district champions,” Wear said. Baez, who leads the Viera defense isn’t ready to stop there, either. “I think we’ll make it all the way this year,” the senior said. “We’re planning to take this all the way.”VV

Wear said the switch from Lorusso to Sepesi has gone well. “The coaching (change) has been a smooth transition,” Wear said. “Coach Sepesi really knows what he’s talking about with lacrosse.” The biggest change the coach has made has come on offense, where Sepesi had to make up for the size he lost from last year’s graduating class. Other than that, the Hawks are simply playing hard and trying to get turnovers. “We are freaks on the ground balls,” Sepesi said. “If the ball’s on the ground, it’s for any team to get, and we get it. Like any sport, the more turnovers you can get for yourself, you win the game.” Whether it’s translating those turnovers into points,

Hawks determined to succeed at districts

321-757-3370

Winning a fourth consecutive district championship is certainly on the Viera High girls tennis team’s to-do list. But this time, the Hawks don’t want to stop there. “We’re definitely really motivated,” junior Tori Pinchera said. “Last year was the third year in a row we went to the regional finals and lost, so it’s one of those things, especially for the seniors (where) it’s a huge driving force for them. “They really want to go far. And we want to help them get there.” Viera’s boys have high hopes, too, of bringing home a district championship. The Hawks also have a new coach to help get them there in Ryan Bauman, who has been impressed with the way his kids have been able to adapt not only on, but off the court. “We’ve had great mental toughness, for the most part, from the team,” Bauman said. “They’ve really been able to stick out the losses and come back. They’ve been very good at doing that. “I’m pleased at that. You don’t find that very often at a high school level.” Pinchera, who plays No. 3 singles for the Hawks, is part of an experienced top five that all played last season, though their order of play is different. Senior Katie Roslonowski is playing No. 1, with senior Dana Hatchett

No. 4 and sophomore Gabby Stanifer at No. 5. Coach Traci Stiffler said Roslonowski’s rise to the top was the result of putting in the time over the summer. “She’s more accurate, she’s powerful (and) a very smart tennis player,” Stiffler said. “She worked very hard.” Viera’s boys feature three seniors at the top – Kyle Logue, Tristan Mignogna and Ryan Colon are Nos. 1 to 3, with sophomores Tanner Knight and Chris Granberry rounding out the top five. One of the biggest things Bauman introduced this season were morning

weight training. It was something that took a little getting used to, but the benefits are starting to show off. The district tournament takes place April 1, hosted by Fort Pierce Central. The Hawks finished second to Vero Beach last season. “I think this year we’ll definitely be competitive with Vero, a lot more competitive than last year,” Bauman said. “I’m hoping to take the win at districts. VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

The Holy Trinity Tigers celebrate after a 21-0 victory over West Shore. Holy Trinity, off to a 6-2 start, is looking to play in the postseason for the second consecutive year. By Carl Kotala

As demonstrated by their 21-0 victory over West Shore last month, the Holy Trinity boys lacrosse team knows how to find the back of the net. “Our strength has to be offense,” junior midfielder Michael Leary said. “Our defense is getting better, improving every game. We just like putting goals in the net.” The Tigers, who were off to a 6-2 start, know how to spread the wealth, too, with five players having scored at least 10 goals. Junior Charles Barger led the way with 25 goals, one ahead of senior Victor Rahner, who had 24. Senior Sean Carroll was next with 18, followed by Leary with 14 and junior Trey Ville

with 10. Holy Trinity was also getting some outstanding play from senior defender Casey Nierenberg. “For the most part, we’re getting better,” Tigers coach Mike Leary said. “We had a little bit of a slow start, but we’ve had four wins in a row, pretty big wins. The next two weeks are pretty crucial … we’re really getting to the heart of our district schedule.” In addition to their potent offense, the Tigers have something else going their way: They returned all of their players from last season. “Last year was the first year the school has ever made the playoffs, and had a winning record,” Michael Leary said. “It motivates us to get better every year. This

year, we just want to make it a step further, district championship.” Being able to talk about a district championship is quite a leap for a program that went 7-46 in its first five years before Leary took over. After getting off to a slow start, which included a loss to district favorite Melbourne Central Catholic, the Tigers have really turned things around. If they can play up to their potential, who knows how far they’ll go. “I think we have the ability to compete for a district championship,” the coach said. “What we did in the past, in the games we lost, we threw the ball away and missed opportunities. If we don’t do that (we have a chance).” VV

Quest students launch Pets in Peril By LindA WiGGinS

The National Honor Society students at Quest Elementary launched a project to help “Pets in Peril” served by Suntree-Viera Pet Rescue, and collected food, treats, toys, and blankets to comfort animals awaiting a forever family of their very own.

“We felt we had a positive impact in our local community helping Suntree/ Viera Pet Rescue,” said Jerry Meyers, who along with Jordyn Rennemann and Kenzie Rennemann are the student officers of the Quest NHS. Four main purposes have guided chapters of NHS from its official

beginning in 1921: To create enthusiasm for scholarship — or learning — to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character in the students. “This project really accomplished all of that for the students,” said Katie Caruso, who along with Lisa Barnes are Quest NHS advisors. “This is the second year they have done this project, and they overwhelmingly chose to do it again because it is so fulfilling on so many levels.” The donation was really heart-felt, according to Melinda Buschor, SVPR president. “It so moving to see how hard they worked,” Buschor said as she hand-fed an abandoned, hungry kitten from a bottle. It is the start of spring kitten season, and the agency counts on donors and volunteers to share the load. “Perhaps even more important, it is great for the students to get exposure to pets in need of a home, because they come from homes that are perfect for pets in need,” she added. “Obviously we hope for love to bloom so they will rescue a pet, and the pet will rescue the student right back by listening to their deepest secrets without judging.” SVPR has placed more than 9,000 animals in forever homes. Five Popular Dog Breeds for Families BY ERIN L. CORIS, D.V.M. iSLAnd AnimAL HoSPitAL At ViERA

Dogs bring such joy to our lives, and quickly become important family members. So when choosing a dog, it is important to find the perfect match for you and your family. Considering your lifestyle, activity level and yard space when researching breeds can help you to determine the breed that is right for you. While there are many breeds that can be wonderful family dogs, here are a list of five favorite family dogs to aid you in your search. The most popular dog breed and family dog in the United States is the Labrador Retriever. Year after year it ranks at the top of the most popular dog breed list by the American Kennel Club, and there are many reasons for this. Labs are gentle, intelligent, even-tempered and trainable. These qualities make the Lab reliable, trustworthy

No family-friendly dog bree would be complete without th Golden Retriever. This reliabl friendly dog is very popular with families, and for good reason. The Golden Retriever athletic, trainable and energe This makes it a perfect fit for an active family with children who love to play. As with the Lab, you can expect constant shedding with this breed. Th is one of the reasons that Gold and Lab crosses have become so popular. In recent years, Golden-Poodle crosses, also known as Goldendoodles, and Labrador-Poodle crosses, also known as Labradoodles, have become very popular. The go with these crosses is to achiev the temperament and activity levels of the Golden and Labr Retrievers with the intelligen and non-shedding of the Pood For families that prefer a smaller breed dog, a Papillon be a wonderful companion do These dogs are intelligent, ha elegant and devoted. These dogs are great in agility do need activity as a release f their energy. They enjoy being an active member of the family and are one of the more versatile dog breeds. This is why so many Labs are used as service dogs, for search and rescue, and as therapy dogs. Because of the Lab’s hair coat, you can expect constant shedding and may want to invest in a good dog brush, but grooming is not necessary. If you are looking for a small dog with a big personality, a Pug may be the dog for you. These dogs are playful, outgoing, happy and affectionate. They are wonderful companion dogs that enjoy laying in your lap or curling up next to you in bed. Although they are considered low-activity, they still need a daily walk and can be rather loud while sleeping.

I NEED A HOME PACO

He’s a chocolate brown Chihuahua who gets along great with other dogs and cats. Such a little gentleman. He loves to play fetch with you, enjoys taking leisurely car rides, and being outside. Paco also adores snuggling next to you on the couch while waiting for his belly rubs! He 7-8 years old, and weighs 10 pounds. He’s up-to-date on all vaccinations, and is heartworm negative.

All he needs now is a loving forever home!

Open Monday - Friday • 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. But perhaps the most devoted and lovable dog breed is the mutt. Many a family, including my own, have found a perfect fit at the local shelter or rescue organization. They don’t follow the gold standards for breed, perhaps because they have so many breeds mixed together that none stand out alone. But their love and affection can be greater than any other. Add the joy of finding the perfect companion, knowing that you saved their life, and you may find the perfect mix. When looking for a “mutt”, be sure to talk with the shelter or rescue organization at length about the dog’s behavior and temperament with people and other animals. Many rescue organizations allow a trial period in which to take the dog home and make sure he/ she is a good fit for your home, lifestyle, and other animals. While there is no sure-fire way to know what breed is right for

your family, this list may be a guideline to help you get started looking at breeds. There are many other breeds that make excellent family pets, this article is limited to just a few. The important thing to remember when deciding which breed is right for you, is to research the breed and become educated in the one that fits your lifestyle, activity level and space. The majority of clients I see that are unhappy with their choice, are people that weren’t aware of the breed disposition, temperament and activity level, because they didn’t research the breed. All breeds have common health concerns that you should consider. Talking to your veterinarian can help you become educated about those health concerns and what you can do to prevent or treat them. So be prepared, and look forward to a long a happy relationship with a perfect pet for you. VV

Suntree Country Club was the spectacular setting on Friday, March 1 for what was billed as the dinner auction to benefit St. John the Evangelist Catholic Community Church’s building fund for a new church building. The fundraising for the new building will be an ongoing project for the priest, the Rev. R. Bradley Beaupré, and associate pastor, the Rev. John Britto Anthony, over the next several years as they face the challenge of raising funds for the new building which could cost nearly $10 million. The current church, located

at 5655 Stadium Parkway, Viera, will be utilized as the Parish Life Center. Chairpersons for this gala evening were Ernie and Tina Euler. Under their direction, numerous committees were established to put together an evening to remember for nearly 185 parishioners and guests. An opening poolside cocktail reception was held in conjunction with a silent auction of numerous items donated by more than 75 individuals and businesses, while The Daniel Jordan Jazz Quartet provided entertainment. After dinner, the live auction was conducted by auctioneer Rick Ninko. The evening concluded with dancing

to the music of Manfred Dreilich. The live auction consisted of 13 special items, including trips to New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, a gourmet dinner prepared by Beaupré, other dinners and trips, an amethyst and diamond pendant and a 1986 Boston Celtics NBA championship autographed basketball signed by the entire team. The trip to North Carolina, billed as Life Above the Clouds at Mountain Air Country Club at Burnsville, N.C., brought in the most money for one item at $3,250. The autographed basketball garnered $2,900. VV

Some school festivals hope to draw from near and far, with fundraising for unbudgeted educational tools the prize in mind. Manatee Elementary School’s annual carnival, held last month, is more like a family reunion. “The carnival is free for all Manatee families and it is a night for us all to come together as a community and celebrate our Manatee family,” said media specialist and librarian Tricia Kuhblank, who runs the event with the school book fair. “It is one of the free events Manatee has for their families, like the Harvest Hoe Down, Family Wellness Night and the Ice Cream Social. It encourages parents and other family members to play active roles in the child’s education, which studies show is very important. Plus, it’s a lot of fun.” Included in festivities is a book parade. Students decorate bulletin boards outside of their classrooms with their favorite book titles and everyone is encouraged to walk in the book parade and vote for their favorites. Among the most popular of the games in the free carnival is a twist on the dunking booth. Key disciplinary figures

dress up as a clown and students wait in long lines to soak a sponge with water and toss it at the clown for a direct face plant, while the clown in turn soaks the tosser with a water blaster. Not surprisingly, Principal Carl Brown in a favorite target, followed by long-time Manatee office fixture Ruth McCleeary and first-grade teacher Dana DeSantis. “The students loved getting teased and egged on by the clown,” Kuhblank said. “It’s the one time they get to take their revenge on the folks who have the power to give detention, late slips and homework assignments.” VV

Students, teachers remember Dr. Seuss on special day By Linda Wiggins

Students at Quest, Manatee, Williams and Suntree elementary schools took part in the March 1 Dr. Seuss Day that has swept the nation in support of childhood reading. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born March 2, 1904, and grew into the most recognized children’s author by his pen name. Dr. Seuss changed the landscape of children’s books with his controlledvocabulary tales of an antic cat (The Cat in the Hat), colorful meals (Green Eggs and Ham), and dozens of other zany tales. When Dr. Seuss set out to write The Cat in the Hat, he wanted to write a story that used simple, mostly monosyllabic words that readers could readily comprehend. His use of the patterned, rhyming text in anapestic meter has become the foundation for many controlled-vocabulary texts for young readers. A typical activity for Dr. Seuss Day, also called Reading Across America, includes sharing The Cat in the Hat and some other patterned books with students, dividing the class into groups and asking them to brainstorm sets of words which rhyme with snake, for example. Then, once the lists are compiled, students can create a story about the snake and its adventures, perhaps The Snake in the Cake. These stories can also be illustrated. There are also reading marathons, read-alongs, read alouds and games created by individual media directors. In every case, a big thrill for students is to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character and see their teachers and school staffers

do the same. “The students really look forward to this day and it gets them so excited about reading,” said Williams Elementary School spokesperson Jeaniey Geremia. While parents are not typically a large part of the day unless they are school volunteers, they get their turn in the evening. “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child,” promises the seussville.com website, as it encourages parents to read to their children on the evening of Geisel’s birthday, this year falling on a Saturday. All of the events are sponsored by the National Education Association. While most children and adults recognize Geisel’s illustrated characters in books, animated features and even Broadway plays based on his children’s books, many of his fans are unaware of his other works targeted toward adults. He penned editorial cartoons mocking Hitler, Mussolini and Hirohito, urging the United States to enter World War II against them, even classifying all

Japanese Americans as potential traitors. At the same time, he deplored racism against Jews and blacks. His war-time films included Private Snafu, voiced by Mel Blanc, to sound like a bumbling but patriotic Bugs Bunny. Often adult in nature, the films were aimed at service men to prevent them from making dumb mistakes that harmed the war effort, such as identifying their deployed positions to loved ones, lest their communications be compromised. former HTEA headmaster Catherine Ford. “It was the result of a national search I was deep into. Holy Trinity reached out to me and I was intrigued enough by what I learned to pursue the possibility of a position here and things worked out well. I’m incredibly impressed by all the good work that has already been done,’’ he said. Hayes considered the size of school, the stability of the school, projected growth and the academic successes of the school. “This is clearly a school that does a lot of things very very well. Particularly for my first time being head of school, I wanted to come into a place where things were functioning well. One of the other pieces that I was curious about was a strong emphasis on faith, character and spirituality. We’re educating students, not only in the classroom but we’re also teaching them to become our future neighbors and future leaders,’’ Hayes said. Athletics during high school are a balance of “healthy mind, healthy body and healthy spirit” which already are promoted by the school since more than 80 percent of the students are involved in at least one sport, he said. “I’ll be encouraging students to embrace challenge and to support them in setting and achieving their goals. Students are really in the process of trying to figure out who they are. The more we can give them opportunities to try the better. We’re all good at something and some are great at many things,’’ he said. As for goals, Hayes said he first wants “to get to know the people and to appreciate the great strength that is here, both within the student body and within the faculty. It’s truly an impressive institution. I met with students and one of their biggest concerns was parking. If that‘s their biggest concern, the school must be doing pretty well,’’ he said. VV

Tim’s Kids special team first formed in 2011, after years of planning and the investment of Viera resident Tim Szymula’s life insurance in forming the foundation. By Linda Wiggins

Williams Elementary School received a donation of street hockey equipment from the local Tim’s Kids foundation. The foundation was formed by the Viera family of a current student at the school, Sophia Szymula, set up to honor her late father who wanted to give kids a taste of the sport regardless of income or ability. Former Williams student and brother to Sophia, hockey athlete Nick Szymula will come to the school this month and bring some of his hockey mates to teach children the sport during their physical education period. Donated hockey equipment includes enough for 30 players on a 50-foot by 30-foot field. “The Tim’s Kids program is the legacy of Tim Szymula, a hockey dad who, prior to his passing in 2007, communicated his desire to see the sport that meant so much to him and his family made accessible to all kids regardless of stature or ability,” said Williams spokesperson Jeaniey Geremia. Szymula ultimately died of cancer, and in the event it was terminal ― and especially when he learned it would be ― he worked to design the program and asked his wife to donate a portion of this life insurance to launch the foundation. August 5, 2011, marked the successful completion of the inaugural session of the Tim’s Kids special ice hockey program for kids with cognitive disabilities. Children

The next Tim’s Kids special program begins its next session this fall. Children of families of any income level can learn hockey for free, and without having to pay for expensive hockey equipment such as skates, pads and other equipment. The activities take place at Space Coast Iceplex in Rockledge. “Our small army of volunteers have brought the unique experience of the sport to a group of kids that otherwise would not have the opportunity, said Tim’s Kids’ spokesperson Gary O’Neil, “which has always been the mission statement for Tim’s Kids.” For more information or to enroll a child in a program or volunteer, contact O’Neil at oneil@timskids.org. Questfest fills gap in ed needs By Linda Wiggins

Joanie Heissenbuttel puts in a good day’s work. Trouble is, she gets no paycheck come Friday afternoons. She doesn’t mind, because the pay for her efforts comes in the form of making the community a better place, one student at a time. The parent volunteer and PTO president at Quest o Elementary School invites others who work for actual dollars to come spend them at the Friday, April 26 Quest Fest. Proceeds pay for equipment, technology, field trips and supplies not provided in today’s thin education budgets.

“Quest Fest is our biggest PTO fundraiser each year,” Heissenbuttel said. “We have the reputation for being an extraordinarily excellent school, and spending a reasonable amount of money having an exceptionally fun time is part of how we accomplish that.” One of the reasons families and community supporters put their money where their school is, is that they have strong ties to the school, according to Heissenbuttel. Quest Fest nurtures such ties. “Our hope is to bring the community together for a fun time with friends and family in the school setting to see how great the school

is and why what we do has such an important impact on our children,” she said. “You can see all the great projects and campaigns decorating all the walls, and other great displays. “It makes people want to invest even more deeply, while at the same time creating more of a family atmosphere, where members care about fellow family members.” The PTO’s goal is to get as much of the food and goods donated and provide them for sale at no more of a cost than a family would ordinarily pay for a good time. “We offer loads of fun at a cost that does not break the bank,” Heissenbuttel said. New this year is a chance for four one-day Park Hopper passes donated from Walt Disney World, co-sponsored by the Brevard Schools Foundation and the PTO. It was the job interview ‌ before the real job interview. And for the juniors in Sandy Spence’s Viera High School Business & Finance academy, it gave them the kind of insight others in their situation could only wish for. “I’ve been on interviews before, and I was scared because I’d never had one,â€? Dalton Wiedman said. “If I had had this before, it would have made a huge difference in how my personal demeanor was.â€? Wiedman and other academy members presented their resumes to, and had face-to-face mock interview with local business members last month. This month, they will have another interview and 15 of the 40 members will be selected for a compensated summer internship. In addition to getting feedback on their resumes,

the students also received a summary of their interview with remarks on where they were strong, where they need to improve and even what skills they may be lacking. “It said I was good at having a conversation, student Kendall Anderson said. “I looked her in the eye, and I didn’t look very intimidated. Also, she liked the way I formatted my resume. It was put together well. Catherine Bowen said she expected to feel very intimidated during her interview, but that didn’t turn out to be the case. In fact, if there seemed to be one consensus among the students it’s that they will be much more relaxed this month when they sit down again for their real interviews. They’ll also be better prepared for questions they will likely be asked. Being in the academy has not only helped the students

become Microsoft certified and learn how to build a proper resume, it has also eased the nervousness associated with public speaking. As sophomores, they did a “hundred-year project in which they not only researched a company that has been around for 100 years, but had to give a power-point presentation in front of the entire academy. “Once you do that (project), there’s no more fear, Anderson said. That is certainly the case for classmate Kate Callinan. “I used to have big stage fright, she said. “I used to never want to speak in front of people, but then last year we did this huge project and I think that helped. I think it all ties into the interview. “It helped with public speaking skills and being able to answer questions on the spot. VV

Draper’s ‘Panic’ mesmerizes students at DeLaura Middle School by Darrell Woehler

f you want someone that has a super resume on a national level, can relate to middle school students like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, and has published books of all types for children, then Sharon M. Draper is your lady. It was designated as a booksigning tour for her latest book, her 30th, “Panic”, but it turned into much more than that. In the second of her presentations, she seemed to take the stage by storm in front of DeLaura Middle School students on Friday, March 8 at Satellite High School auditorium. Earlier, she had given a similar presentation to Satellite High School students. Through the efforts of Gina Clark of the District Media Resource Center and Sarah

Aloise, the media specialist for Satellite High School, they were able to arrange for this award –winning author to visit their school. Sharon Draper lives in Cincinnati, Ohio and has family in Florida. The book tour is being facilitated by Books’ N More and, according to Dan Stewart, their agent, there is no more personable author, or person than Draper. She has written numerous children’s books, including one set here in Florida, about a hurricane, called “The Birthday Storm”. Her book chapters are generally short in length, but she is able to grab the reader’s attention, as she can during her presentation, which she enthusiastically demonstrated during her visit with DeLaura Middle School

Dr. Mark Sargent opened Reflections OB/GYN in the heart of Viera four years ago with the intention of offering his patients a boutique like setting and extraordinary care commensurate with the upscale community of Suntree /Viera. As the only full time OB/ GYN in Viera, he has done that and more, and the women whom he treats have become part of the Reflections family. When a patient enters the reception area, they are greeted by name. The care they receive is very focused and Sargent and his staff make sure they receive the special treatment they deserve. This treatment ranges from specially warmed gowns and booties to wear to the longer appointment time the doctor schedules for every patient. Reflections OB/GYN is an independent solo practice. This means it is not a part of the corporate medicine practices that are limiting patient choice and treating patients like numbers. Sargent can devote more time to each and every one of his patients, and if needed refer them to the best doctors or facilities, not just to the ones that the corporation had financial ties to. Sargent feels this is important in order to assure the patient that she is the most important person in his office at that time, and that she will always be offered the best care available. “We offer the elements of a boutique practice without the charges,” Sargent said. Minimally invasive procedures are Sargent’s

specialty. Many procedures that once required hospitalization can now be done in the office. This gives patients the benefits of lower costs and quicker recovery times. If surgery is required, Sargent is one of the few OB/GYNs in the area that specializes in the latest da Vinci robotic surgery. As a former military physician, Sargent spent years practicing OB/ GYN prior to becoming an independent physician. Married to Tamara for 27 years, he and his wife have two daughters, ages 22 and 24. Tamara proudly tells a story of how her husband delivered their

youngest child on the way to the hospital as a medical student, which led him to a very fulfilling and successful career in obstetrics and gynecology. His office hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Fridays. Thursdays are allocated to surgery. To find out more about Sargent and his office, visit reflectionsobgyn.com or call the office at 321-610-8955. The office is located next to Essentials Spa and Bassin Plastic Surgery Center at 1705 Berglund Lane, Suite 102, Viera. 32940. VV

Beauty can be skin deep

VIERA VOICE George White

The leadership staff of Premiere Medical Aesthetics are, from left, aesthetician Kim Mooty and spa director Heather Rogers. By George White

Premier Medical Aesthetics now offers Viera and Suntree residents new ways of obtaining and maintaining beauty in a facility designed around being pleasant to visit. Part of Porter Premier Dermatology and Surgery Center, for the past six years located at 1344 S. Apollo Blvd. in Melbourne, the new portion of the practice has expanded at 6032 Farcenda Place, Suite 102, to offer medical treatments

that correct the appearance of the skin under the direct supervision of dermatologist Dr. Anthony Porter. “Dr. Porter has been my personal dermatologist ever since he got to town. He has wanted to do this — branch out from his dermatology practice into a medical spa up in the Viera area — for a very long time. We’ve been working on this about eight months,’’ said Kim Mooty, aesthetician at the new 2,038-square-foot Premier facility.

The new facility will eventually have a 12-member staff, said spa director Heather Rogers. “We’re not diluting the dermatology focus of his practice. We’re adding to it. Our main focus, our research and everything we do, everything we bring to the practice — with dermatology and medical in mind — is really mainly focused on aesthetics,’’ Rogers said. Services to be provided include: • Advanced Skin Care Treatments — peels, facials and microdermabrasion that are designed to promote cell turnover by removing the superficial layer of skin cell. • Botox — Botox (Botulinum toxin) is a protein the FDA approved for treatment of fine lines and wrinkles of the face. • Exilis Face & Body Contouring — EXILIS is a device that offers a non-surgical solution using radio frequency (RF) energy for fat reduction and tissue tightening. • Juvederm — a clear, transparent and viscous gel made of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid. Juvederm is injected intradermally to correct/augment folds and wrinkles of the face. It can also

be used to increase the size and enhance the appearance of lips. • Radiesse — an FDA approved synthetic dermal injectable filler designed to correct/augment moderate to deep facial frown lines and wrinkles. “There are three things he

wanted to build this practice on are compassion, integrity and excellence. That’s the tag line. We’re dedicated to that mission,’’ Rogers said. For more information, call 321-608-8160 or visit the porterderm.com.

For the first time in nearly a decade, colorful floats, decorated golf carts, motorcycles and horses took to the parade route south of Wickham Road in Suntree, down Interlachen Road and around St. Andrews Boulevard to the end at the Suntree Country Club. Organizers hope to again make The March Maddness Spirit of Suntree parade an annual event. “The parade was a huge success and accomplished its goal of providing an event that would be enjoyed by all and help bring our community closer together, said parade organizer Sally Contess, board member and chair of the community relations committee for the Suntree Master Homeowners Association. The last parade was in 2004. The parade had more than 30 participants made up of area businesses, residents and organizations. More entries and participants joined the procession as it passed through their neighborhoods. Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputies on motorcycles led off the parade, which included well wishing and waving by Brevard County District 4 Commissioner Mary Bolin Lewis and Sheriff Wayne Ivey. Some of the participants included Chick-fil-A, Prestige Title, which won first prize for its float, the Suntree Elementary School Choir, Suntree Rotary Club, M&B Golf Carts, a Brevard County Fire-Rescue engine and Andretti Thrill Park. Suntree Country Club provided food to parade participants and audience members while they checked out vendor booths. Proceeds from a 50/50 drawing went to Harmony Farms, on hand with one of its many therapy horses. For more information, call 321-242-8960. VV

Students shoot for wildlife photo exhibit By Linda Wiggins

Kai Aravena took to a camera like a fish to water, like a bird to air, and now all those elements are among his favorite photography subjects. The Quest Elementary School Photo Club member and 15 other club members will show their works on Saturday, April 13 during the 2013 Viera Wetlands Nature Festival. The photographycentered festival kicks off with registration, nature exhibits and a loop display of submitted photos at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 12 at Holiday Inn Viera. Dinner follows, with keynote speaker Tim Gallagher, award-winning author, wildlife photographer, and magazine editor. Gallagher is the editor of Living Bird, the flagship publication of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. An author, Gallagher will release and sign his new book, “Imperial Dreams: Searching for the Long-lost Imperial Woodpecker in the Wild Sierra Madre.” Florida Institute of Technology student Nicolette Zahner will unveil her graduate studies for FrogWatch USA. Dinner is $25 and includes tax and gratuity. A free FrogWatch tour follows from 9:30 to 10:30

Quest Photo Club member Gabe Shelton snaps pictures of the Viera Wetlands, his photos shown above.

p.m. at the Viera Wetlands, led by Zahner and Brevard Zoo conservation staff. Saturday starts pre-dawn for a sunrise tour of the Wetlands led by Friends of the Viera Wetlands, a nonprofit auxiliary group coordinating the festival in tandem with the Brevard County Department of Natural Resources. An optional wildlife photography course taught by the Brevard Wildlife Corridor Expedition takes place from 7 to 10 a.m. Registration details and costs are available at

ExpeditionBrevard.com. An organized breakfast will take place at select area restaurants from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The festival’s main event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, with wildlife exhibits, vendors, food, live music and more. Kai Aravena said he is excited that his private passion will be going public, an extracurricular activity that may inspire him to a profession. On Sunday, April 14, there will be a repeat of the predawn tour, breakfast at select locations and optional photography class. Festivities will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Brevard Zoo’s Nyami Nyami River Lodge, starting with a continental breakfast and including nature exhibits and speakers. Craig Faulhaber of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will speak on Florida Scrub-Jay

Conservation, Gabe Cenker will encourage fellow youth to join his Young Birders of Brevard and Brevard Zoo conservation staff will detail the zoo’s conservation initiatives. Cost is $10. Quest Photo Club founder and teacher Andrea Kubilus said the goal of any extracurricular activity is to get students to taste an activity and delve into it

further on their own time. Abigail Lewis offers proof of success. “Photo Club has influenced me to get deeper into photography and take more classes and lessons for it,” Abigail said. Advance RSVPs for free tours and paid events are required at fovw.org, except for the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday free festival at which all are welcome. VV

Most snowbirds are on their way to the northern respite by the end of May. Seasoned part-time residents will have a set routine as they prepare their Brevard homes for departure. Veteran snowbirds know that the exodus means more than just packing a bag and locking the doors. Here are some tips that may be helpful. Before leaving, there are precautions necessary no matter what type of property you have. One of the best things you can do is find a reliable house sitter. This would be someone who comes into your home on a regular basis while you are away. There are professional companies that offer this type of service, or you may be fortunate enough to have a reliable friend or neighbor. Reliability is the key because the welfare of your Florida home depends on regular, knowledgeable checkups. An advantage of a professional company is that they usually have a cadre of vendors ready to step in and resolve emergencies that may occur. Also, the pros normally are in a better position to assess the situation and react quickly to bring in the appropriate repair company. Whether you use a

professional or go with a friend or relative, be sure you have a clear understanding of what you would like accomplished during the inspections and the parameters of their actions without getting approval from you. The understanding should be in writing. It may not be as formal with a friend or relative as with a professional. However, having a written document may avoid relationship problems with friends or relatives. Be sure there is a list of items you want covered during the inspections. Provide a list of all of your regular vendors who are familiar with your home. Also, leave clear and concise contact information for reaching you. Give your house sitter backup contacts in case you are not available and let them know of any travel plans you may have that could prevent access. Finally, be aware that the Brevard Sheriff’s Department will provide periodic drive-bys in your absence, if you alert them to your vacancy. This is minimal protection in the overall scheme of things, as the deputy will not be going inside your home. It is a lot easier to be proactive rather than reactive. VV It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his Community Association Manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@suntreeflorida.com.

PARTING

Anhinga (Anhinga, anhinga)

Charlie Corbeil

Florida Master Naturalist pbase.com/charlie_corbeil By Charlotte and Charlie Corbeil

The anhinga, a mostly solitary waterbird, is a protected species. The sleek male displays black plumage with a hint of green; the female is similar except for a light brown head, neck, and upper chest. Occasionally, the anhinga is confused with the cormorant; they • Wood Shutters • Polyvinyl Shutters • Pleated Shades

are comparable in size, behavior, and appearance. Distinguishing features are the anhinga’s longer and wider tail and the hooked bill. Unlike most aquatic birds, the anhinga lacks waterproofing and becomes waterlogged. Low buoyancy allows it to swim with only the head and long neck above water, resembling a water snake ready to strike — thus the name snakebird. Saturation, however, is beneficial while hunting for food (primarily fish). It facilitates deep dives and enables underwater search to persist for significant periods. A long, quick

neck and a long, pointed, serrated bill ease the preying process. Slow-moving fish are speared in the side and eaten headfirst above water. Aquatic invertebrates and insects supplement the diet. Since this bird lacks an insulating layer of feathers, sunning is crucial to revive body temperature after submersion. Drying out also improves or restores flight. Routinely, the anhinga perches in a tree or settles on a bank to absorb the heat. It spreads its graceful wings — a striking display. When dry, this majestic creature skillfully soars again. Preferred habitats are freshwater and coastal

Dave MacDonald, left, helps Raleigh Berry reposition a web cam at the Viera Wetlands. The camera was installed this spring as the result of a grant from Rockwell Collins

By George White

The world now has an Internet window into the Viera Wetlands ponds, thanks to a grant from Rockwell Collins. A web cam went on line in early March on the Friends of Viera Wetlands site www. fovw.org that shows dead cabbage palm tree stumps and a fallen log where turtles sun themselves in good weather. Located southeast of the Cell 1 island, looking Northeast, the camera takes an image every 30 minutes with chances for viewers to also see past images. Purchase of the camera made possible through a $2,5000 Green Communities grant from Rockwell Collins. Monthly web hosting is being underwritten by Viera Voice. “It takes a still photo and it’s pretty high-definition to get a snapshot of what‘s going on out there. It runs 24 hours a day and we’ve even seen that a spider

builds its web on it every night and it’s taken down in the morning. You’ll see birds like ducks and you’ll also see the weather conditions and you’ll occasionally see cars and can tell that the wetlands are open,’’ said Raleigh Berry, environmental land manager for the county Natural Resources Management Department. The county utilities department owns the site for water treatment through a series of ponds, or cells, which were flooded. Those ponds now hold a variety of wildlife to be viewed and photographed. “It‘s grown to become an ecotourism destination and that is outside of the utilities departments‘ mission statement. We also provide outreach and work with the volunteer groups out here,’’ Berry said. The grant also will be used to create and install nesting platforms on the dead cabbage palm trees to extend their environmental

use, he said. The platforms will be installed in early summer, he said. “We still have a few palms that are still sort of alive that have nests in them. If we didn’t do something, all of those stumps would soon be gone,’’ he said. Placement and the exact view of the web cam will be somewhat dynamic, but they will be mostly stationary, Berry said. Possible future steps could include additional web cams and perhaps even a streaming web video camera which could be zoomed, he said. The Green Communities grant program, in its ninth year, funds projects that improve the environmental condition of communities where Rockwell Collins operates. Since 2004, the company has awarded more than 348 grants through the program, ranging from $250 to $2,500. VV
