Some of the members of the Women of Excellence committee who plan for the back-to-school luncheon for teenage girls in foster care each August are Naomi Penny, left, Charine Lewis, Debbie Sanders, Glenda O’Coin, Lisa Beth Sommerhoff and Malak Hammad. By Linda Wiggins
Businesswomen in the Viera/Suntree area are sending teen girls in foster care back to school with a new outfit, haircut, book bag and school supplies. The secret side mission? Proving to them that someone does care. “Children, adolescents and young adults can sometimes feel like nobody cares about them, and in virtually every instance it’s simply imagined and temporary,” said Charine Lewis, coordinator of the back-to-school project for the Women of Excellence program, a committee of the Melbourne Area Regional Chamber of Commerce. “But for teens in the foster care system, that feeling is more likely fact, based on documented abuse, neglect or abandonment. Our goal is to help these girls put down their guard and open up to the feeling that someone truly does care about them.” The event is held each August at the Chamber of Commerce offices in downtown Melbourne on a Saturday so that all conference rooms are available, this year on Aug. 3. All the rooms are used as girls take a fun personality profile quiz, pick

A big dog bowl with Brutus scrawled across the front, placed next to the back door. A shiny new sign warning potential intruders of an active alarm service ― whether or not the service exists. An actual barking dog, the bigger the better, or even a pocket-size pooch to sound an alarm. These are some of the solutions, humorous but serious, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey gave residents of the greater Suntree area at a July 18 evening community meeting to address a chronic wave of break-ins. “Most of all, if something looks out of place, if there is a service worker circling your neighbor’s house that you’ve never seen before, give us a call,” Ivey said. “If they’re legitimate, no harm no foul, but if not, catching one intruder can give us a foothold.” The source of the breakins appears to be a crime syndicate out of the area that sends intruders into upscale neighborhoods to rob homes of guns, jewelry, cash and other easily portable valuables. The intruder or intruders jump back in the car and dash back out onto Interstate 95 and out of the area, giving sheriff’s deputies little time to

respond. Ivey has set up unmarked vehicles and plain-clothes deputies to drive through the area or park as sentries. At the meeting, the sergeant in charge of Suntree/Viera’s West Precinct General Crimes Unit gave an update of the team’s progress. He dressed not in a deputy’s uniform but a nondescript black suit and tie. “We have gotten some calls about our vehicles in the neighborhood as suspicious,” said Sgt. Alan Morrison, drawing waves of laughter from an overflow crowd of more than 200 packed into the fellowship hall of Advent Lutheran Church in Suntree. “This shows us you are already working as a team.” The intruders appear to be young adults dressed in service uniforms who first knock on the door to ascertain if the home is empty. They typically operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the most common time occupants might be away at work. If someone answers, they may give a half-hearted sales pitch so the homeowner is not alerted. The most frequent entry method is breaking a rear sliding glass door. Typically, the alarm is not activated because the magnetic plates that come together when the
sliding doors are closed do not separate. An alarm service was the No. 1 recommendation given for safety. Make sure it can detect broken glass. Get an alarm service and make sure it is activated, and engage it even if the occupant is home or plans to be gone only a few minutes, Morrison said. Be sure the system is in working order. Make sure the alarm signs are not old and tattered, and post them in a visible place to warn intruders. Marsha Senior is among the south Suntree residents who have a new reason to be concerned: the new Pineda Causeway interchange off I-95. “We have no fences and nothing to stop intruders from walking into our backyards from Pineda Causeway,” said Senior, who already has adopted a dog for security. “We don’t want to install the bars on the windows that are common in South Florida, but we don’t know what else to do.” During a break-in, call 9-1-1, said BCSO spokeswoman Maria Furnez, and to report suspicious activity, call 321-633-7162 and an attendant can determine the response. “Many times in North America, we take for granted the need for water since we simply turn on our faucets or flush our toilets,” said Daniel Richeson, VWN’s executive director. “However, in many parts of the world, clean drinking water is not so easy to come by. Imagine spending most of your day walking to get clean water or settling for drinking from a hand-dug well that you know is contaminated.” Just as clean water is the greatest need of the neediest across the globe, so then is access to clean water the biggest Christian mission, offering the lure of water to hook parched souls on the living waters of God’s Word. What the Richesons found on the mission fields is that there are many, many individual, unconnected churches and volunteers traveling to Haiti, Central America and Africa digging wells, installing water purification devices and educating villagers on the dangers of drinking and bathing in water laced with raw sewage. “We felt we could come alongside these efforts and coordinate them, we could do

more together than each one of us could do singularly all tallied up,” Richeson said. Clean water is essential for life, but one in eight of the world’s population does not have access to it. Each year, 1.4 million children die as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation. This amounts to around 4,000 deaths a day or one every 20 seconds, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), the public health arm of the United Nations. According to WHO, half the world’s hospitalizations are due to water-related diseases. It estimates that the integrated approach of providing water, sanitation and hygiene reduces the number of

deaths caused by diarrheal diseases by an average of 65 percent. Efforts to connect churches and host mission trips rely on business partnerships of VWN. Each company partner agrees to commit a certain percentage of its profits toward water mission work. The first firm to do so was Grimaldi Candies, known for its ridged potato chips dipped in milk chocolate. The long-time, family-owned business was sold after its founder retired, and sold again four years ago to Melissa Richeson’s parents, Phil and Jamie Holtje. The retired couple lives off investments and puts 100 percent of the once again, family-owned business’ profits into VWN and other charities. “We have plenty of businesses and abundance in this country,” Richeson said, “so we feel called to share.” For more information, go to vierawaternetwork.com or call 321-638-0703. Facing tough financial times
Back by popular demand
Suntree Food Trucks and Music Fest will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at Spyglass Park in Suntree. The event is sponsored by the Suntree Master Homeowners Association. For more information, call 321-242-8960. VV
Most associations should be well into their budgeting process by this time of the year. Many boards are struggling to keep assessments contained while at the same time maintaining high levels of maintenance and service. Residents are cutting back in their personal lives on dining out, entertainment and other areas in order to provide for their essentials. According to a national survey conducted by Community Associations Institute (CAI), more than half of the nation’s estimated 310,000 community associations continue to struggle with financial issues associated with the mortgage foreclosure crisis and related economic downturn. Many associations are experiencing financial shortfalls as a direct result of their owners’ economic distress. Here are some suggestions that may help your

association save money or hold the line on expenditures. Negotiate long-term fixed price contracts. If you have one-year agreements with your vendors, offer them a three -five year contract at today’s pricing or a lower rate. Most vendors are experiencing the same economic struggles and would relish the security of a long-term agreement. Rebid all of your agreements with all service providers,
including accountants, attorneys, management companies and insurance companies. Purchase supplies and equipment in bulk or larger quantities. This will often lower the per-piece price. Consider each purchase to determine if it is a necessity. It may be possible to delay or cancel a purchase and save association funds. Reexamine each line item in your budget and see if any can be tweaked. Going through a thorough financial evaluation will assure your residents of a carefully run association.
It’s important to point out that Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his Community Association Manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@ suntreeflorida.com. VV

From Viera to Broadway and back By MARY BROTHERTON
Jonathan McFadden met Monica Toro Lisciandro in Suntree Elementary School’s after-school program. They have remained friends, despite moving to New York. “I moved back from New York long before Monica, and started pursuing my degree at Eastern Florida State College (formerly Brevard Community College)”, McFadden said. “When Monica came back from Astoria, she called to say, ‘Let’s meet up.’ By then, she was married with two kids. That was the end of February 2012. When we met, Monica said, ‘We should start that studio we always talked about,’. . . I was working toward a law degree. In 30 days, we had the entire business plan and a website, a logo and a place.” Their dream became The Viera Studio for the Performing Arts (Viera Studio) and in one year, it has moved from a small, second-story unit to a 4,000 square-foot ground-
floor New York-style studio. Toro Lisciandro studied at Marymount Manhattan College. “I loved performing,” she said, “but when I was in college, as an intern, I found something I loved even more. There is something exciting in sharing the love of theater with kids.” She handles the administrative duties, teaches creative playwriting and musical theater and organizes events. McFadden, who studied at the American Musical Dramatic Academy, the Singers Forum, the Connecticut School of Broadcasting and in Los Angeles, teaches all the acting classes. At Viera Studio, he has focused on public relations and marketing. Enrollment is up from 30 students to 120. “Most who started with us a year ago are still with us,” Toro Lisciandro said. Students come from as far away as Port St. John and

Palm Bay, but most are local to Viera/Suntree. McFadden said, “We don’t believe in putting a cap on the amount of time it takes to learn a skill. It’s very individualized. Each of the instructors has a professional level of education and performing.” In addition to McFadden and Toro Lisciandro, Viera Studio employs a concierge and four instructors. McFadden and his mother, Barbara McFadden, teach a social acting class geared toward those with Asperger’s
syndrome; they teach students with other disabilities. “Everything we do, we teach the whole child,” Toro Lisciandro said. “Performing arts is our vehicle.” Following the studio’s production of “Annie JR,” 50 children presented Scenes and Selections inspired by The Lion King. “We couldn’t have done it without the parents’ involvement,” McFadden said. “They went all out and we really appreciate it. The costumes rivaled Broadway.”
Nine students will truly experience Broadway later this month when they visit the set of “Annie,” watch a production of “The Lion King” and eat at Ellen’s Stardust Diner. They will take a private master class with Broadway’s awardwinning choreographer, Jim Cooney; tour Radio City Music Hall and audition for “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Little Miss Sunshine.” For more information, visit thevierastudio.com or call 321-541-0211. Houses of God to become homes for families By Linda Wiggins
Karen Curry has been there, done that. She lost her job, went hungry and became homeless. An educated professional, she is a prime example of the new face of homelessness that includes intact families with children that have no place to go and stay together. This fall, churches will go from houses of God to homes for families. Families will stay at each church for a week while adult family members look for jobs and children go to school or day care. “This is a proven solution that not only works, but leads to an 80 percent success rate of families moving into permanent housing of their own and staying self-sufficient,” said Viera resident Richard “Lovi” Lovisone, board president of Family Promise of Brevard. The board currently is seeking an executive director and a part-time case manager. The nonprofit helps families access human services, permanent employment and safe affordable housing so they can achieve self-sufficiency and lasting independence, Lovisone added. “The rate of success for the families that graduate from the program after about 12 weeks is unheard of among homelessness intervention programs,” Lovisone said. He served at another Family Promise location before relocating to Brevard, which has provided priceless leadership experience to the local start-up process, say fellow board members. In addition to the new local unit, Family Promise has locations in Orlando and across the nation, with affiliates in 41 states managing 160,000 volunteers. The concept is a welcome one to Rev. Hoyt Byrum, outreach and visitation pastor at host site Suntree United Methodist Church. The church pools outreach resources with others in the Suntree/Viera Area

Richard “Lovi” Lovisone drafts a recommendation with Rev. Hoyt Byrum on how the Suntree/Viera Area Association of Churches can help support local Family Promise of Brevard host churches.
Association of Churches, which will help support all of the Family Promise host churches in the area. Three of the 13 Family Promise churches are in the Viera/Suntree area, along with three official support churches that commit volunteers and resources to host churches. “As a group, and as with individual churches, we tend to give out food, and money when we have it, to the same families every week, every month or whatever is each location’s rule for how often one can seek aid,” said Byrum, the liaison between S/VAAC and Family Promise. “We as volunteers are wellmeaning but we have no professional skills at effectively changing people’s lives, other than to offer love and prayer when they come for help,” Byrum said. “We often encourage dependency on churches, when our goal should be to help them become self sufficient.” The screening process and professional rehabilitation structure was the perfect solution to maximize limited S/VAAC resources and volunteer power, Byrum added. Initially, up to four families

and a limit of 14 individuals will stay in their family groups in temporary bedrooms at area churches, where church volunteers pay for and provide two meals and a packed lunch each day. Residents are shuttled to a resource center on host church Grace Fellowship’s campus in Rockledge to learn money management and other life skills. They and their children all return “home” each evening and relocate to another of the 13 churches the following week. Churches in the network host families once a quarter. The program will launch at its inaugural site once the new executive director is in place. In Curry’s eyes, the Family Promise concept can’t come soon enough for families facing hard times, many for the first time in their lives due to the current Great Recession. “I totally get it. I’m an educated, professional woman, and yet I lost everything and eventually had no place to live,” Curry said. “The face of homelessness has definitely changed.” For more information, go to familypromiseofbrevard.org or call Lovisone at 321-610-8453. Kitty Hatton, grandchildren Allie and Cole and daughter April Murray pose in front of the ballet shoe entries submitted for the July contest. By Rosemary H. Lynn
July is generally a slow month for dance schools and dance apparel stores, so the owner of Melbourne Dancewear wanted to do something unique to keep interest in ballet piqued during the quiet time. Kitty Hatton asked her young customers from area dance schools to make colorful and fun creations from toe shoes. The imaginative designs that these young dancers came up with were artistic and fun, among them a whimsical surfer on a board in a bright blue sea, a nutcracker standing guard and a lamp with the toe shoe as a base. Forty-four young participants presented their creations and all were posted on Facebook for feedback AS SEEN ON
from social networkers who would choose the winning entry. At the end of the month, the winning entry in two categories will be presented with gift certificates that can be used in the store. Hatton has been a dancer since the age of 5. Her daughter and granddaughter and grandson have followed in her steps. Hatton’s store does not just focus on ballet. She has apparel for tap, jazz, hiphop, yoga, ballroom dance and zumba. All of the staff members are dancers or have danced in the past. They are very knowledgeable when it comes to types of shoes and other clothing necessary for a good performance. Hatton also has consignment clothing in all sizes and types for reasonable prices. She
offers custom fittings and other sewing services having to do with dance apparel. Hatton moved here from Miami as a dancer. She had a studio first in downtown Melbourne and then in Indian Harbor Beach as well as Satellite Beach and Palm Bay. Now she is settled in at her location in Melbourne at 442 N. Harbour City Blvd. at the corner of U.S. 1 and Babcock Street. Melbourne Dancewear is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Mermaid race gives women the helm By George White
The Melbourne Yacht Club puts women at the helm — maybe to show the men how it’s done — during the annual all-female crew Mermaid Regatta to be held Sept. 14 and 15. While all the large sailboats are controlled by women during the Indian River race, men are often aboard to take vessels in and out of port. However, the men are only allowed to speak and stay midship so there’s no racing advantage because of weight. The friendly free-standing competition was the brain child 35 years ago of Rachele Ross, who learned to sail with her husband Jerry on freshwater lakes in Central Florida. Many members of the club are couples where both husband and wife sail. “My husband Jerry and I first sailed this little
homemade boat built from plans in Popular Mechanics. We all learned to sail it,’’ Rachele Ross said. From there the family went to a Sailfish, then a 16-footer, then a 23-footer, then a 25-footer. Now they own and sail a 30-foot boat called Sleighride. The mermaid race was born out of an incident when Rachele had to take the boat from the Melbourne Yacht Club to the Eau Gallie Yacht Club to pick up her husband for a race. “I’m heading up the river and one of the best sailors around was next to me — we both had the same the same amount of sails out — and I beat him. I thought to myself ‘I can do this,’ ’’ she said. Friend and longtime Sleighride crew member Jan Crawford agrees. Sleighride has won the women’s regatta three times. “There are a number of

The Viera High Fencing Club was formed last year. This time around, they will get the chance to compete against club teams from other schools. By Carl Kotala
The Viera High Fencing Club has some exciting days ahead this school year. Entering its second year, the club will be part of a league featuring teams from five other Brevard County high schools, and possibly two teams made up of homeschooled students.
VIERA VOICE provided by Greg Arthur
Tyler Leve, who will be a junior this year, came up with the idea of forming the Viera High Fencing Club.
There could be more to come. “We figure once the word gets out, and they actually see us doing it, other schools are going to want to be a part of it,” coach Greg Arthur said. “There are other schools that have contacted me about it.” Arthur, who runs Iron Works Fencing, has been teaching classes at the Viera Regional Center since 2008. He was approached last year by Viera High student Tyler Leve about forming a club at the school. Leve is now president of the club. “Originally, it was just sort of an intramural idea,” Arthur said. “We’d just get together with them and fence a little bit.” Then Arthur was contacted by coach Daniel Bucur, who owns the Genesis Fencing Club in Melbourne. Bucur had students from Satellite High, Cocoa Beach and Florida Air Academy who were interested in forming clubs and the idea of a fencing
league began to percolate. Students will do more than fence. “What we’re going to do is allow them to organize and create their own leadership, and kind of run the thing themselves because that gives them a chance to learn some leadership that they can use later on in college,” said Arthur of the role he and Bucur will play. “We’re going to be advisors, and we’re going to be the coaches … but hopefully, they’ll be able to run everything on their own.” Clarke Conlon, who has been fencing for about two years, will be a senior at Viera this fall. “I always wanted to try (fencing), and I’d seen (Arthur’s) advertisement at the rec, so I decided to give it a shot,” Conlon said. “It’s really fun. You don’t see a lot of people do it, and when people ask me, they say, ‘Oh, it’s so cool that you do that.’ ” VV

Sensational All-Star season keeps getting better for Viera/Suntree Little League By Carl Kotala
After seeing three teams win district titles earlier in the month, the Viera/ Suntree Little League had both of its softball teams — the 11-12s and the 9-10s — capture sectional championships and advance to the state tournament. The 11/12 girls advanced with a pair of wins over Vero Beach. In the first game, Corrin Flajole singled up the middle to bring home the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth as VSLL rallied from a 3-2 deficit to win 5-3. Zoie Hatley had a single and double and Daphne Furman pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and no walks. A five-run second inning propelled VSLL to an 8-1 victory in the clinching game. Lauren Rozic had a double and Hatley added a three-run triple. Taylor Jensen had an RBI single and Summer Johnson added a two-run single to close out the scoring. Livi King pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and no walks. The 11/12 team began state tournament play on July 19 in Niceville. The 9/10 softball team won both of its games 11-4 in four innings over a pair of teams from Port St. Lucie. Pitchers Alyssa Tougas and Megan Andrews earned the two wins, while hitting stars included Morgan Mordas,
Abigail Soliven, Olivia Vice, Deanna Marrs, Kennedy Hewitt and Tougas. Other team members included Megan Andrews, Kelsey Reiter, Bailey Bernard, Yelani Lugo, Brooklyn Helms and Angelina Rodriguez. The 9/10 baseball team, which also won a district title, won its first game of the sectionals as J.T. Smith pitched 5 1/3 strong innings with help from David Rusnak. Liam Samuels hit his first-ever Little League home run. Peter Petracco hit his first Little League home run in the championship game and Ethan Huffman, Peter Petracco and Cole Teply all pitched in rainy conditions as VSLL fell to Port St. Lucie. Smith and teammate Declan McDermott received game balls for their performances during the All-Star season. McDermott batted .710 with 22 hits and 26 RBI while Smith pitched in five of the team’s 10 games and had a 1.41 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 17 innings. The VSLL 11/12 baseball team also won the district championship and was headed to the state. Madison Headley, who was named to the 11/12 softball All-Stars, was part of a travel ball team that recently won the 14U ISA World Series. VV

Holy Trinity’s Sweeney learning to succeed through failure
Back to school
By Carl Kotala
continued from page 2 out a new hairstyle, “shop” for and try on outfits until they find the one that flatters the most, and then settle in for a delicious lunch with peer hostesses who become their new best friends. A goody bag with jewelry, toiletries and modest gift cards is the day’s souvenir. “We recruit positive, high-achieving girls raised in traditional homes to volunteer as hostesses. It’s just like going to a party at a girlfriend’s house. The girls are definitely more apt to click with someone their own age rather than we who likely appear to them more like grandmothers,” Lewis said. The fun personality profile icebreaker allows the girls to discover that their qualities are what make them who they were meant to be. “If they are more shy, or more outgoing, or more organized, or more spontaneous, they see that there is nothing that is wrong with them, that there are positives to each quality, and they are perfect as they are,” Lewis said. While the event is healing and fun, the focus is on education, said one of the organizers. “The best part about this project is that it helps the girls get excited about going back to school, and education is the key to success in life,” said Julia Irvin, former coordinator of Connected by 25, which helps give youth aging out of foster care a solid foundation as independent adults. Though she returned to the private sector as an engineer, Irvin maintains pursuit of the mission as a volunteer. “Often these girls come from unstructured backgrounds where school was not a priority,” said Irvin, who also has for many years helped recruit mentors for young adults in foster care. “We see that the youth who have the best life-long outcomes are the ones who are able to keep up with the workload in mainstream school, so getting the girls excited about their education is extremely important in the short term and long term.” To join the planning team for next year’s event or to make a tax-deductible donation of cash or goods, call Lewis at 321-508-9030. RE-INVENT YOUR LIFE!
Kerry Sweeney knows the payoff is in sight … as long as he sticks with the plan. The Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy senior has spent his summer not only working through a change in his swing, but also learning how to deal with something else: failure. Though he did win a oneday boys junior qualifier tournament this summer, the 17-year-old hasn’t had the results he would normally expect. But as he said, to succeed and be a champion is hard. Sometimes, you have to take a step back to move forward. “It’s such a challenge to be patient, especially in the game of golf,” Sweeney said. “I want to take it to the next level, and so do many other players. But if you’re thinking you’re going to be successful every time you step on the tee box until the 18th green, and you’re going to shoot the same exact score and you’re going to win tournaments … that’s never going to happen. “You’ve just got to accept failure. I’m accepting it and learning. I’m learning how to be a winning failure at the game of golf. It’s the way it is. It’s tricky.” Sweeney certainly knows about success. He won the Class 1A regional title last season and went on to finish 24th at the state tournament. The experience left him

Holy Trinity’s Kerry Sweeney is very happy with the way his golf game has been progressing this summer, even though it hasn’t always been reflected in his results.
wanting more. “It kind of woke me up to say, ‘OK, let’s work harder. Let’s do something different, try to become somebody a little better next time,’ ” he said. The swing change came in mid-April and for the first month or so, Sweeney struggled. Now, he’s starting to feel more comfortable, even if that hasn’t been reflected in his results. “I’m hitting the ball well,” he said. “I’m putting really well. I’m doing everything to try to score well, it’s just the scores aren’t there. It’s going to come
around.” Heading into his senior season, Sweeney is looking at colleges such as South Florida, UCF and Mercer. He’s also looking forward to helping the Tigers succeed in a very tough region come the postseason. “I’m really excited … more about trying to get to states,” he said. “Holy Trinity really hasn’t been to states. It’s a challenging goal, but I think we can do it.” As for his own game, Sweeney knows there is a big payoff down the road. “It will be very rewarding if I just stay patient,” he said. VV

Retired agent puts career on ice
By Linda Wiggins
In the blockbuster hit movie “Men in Black,” the otherworld detective’s name was Agent J. Serving up frozen treats across Viera and Suntree, it’s just plain “Mr.” J. Retired federal special agent Greg Jones swears he’s not working under cold cover. His Mr. J’s Ice Cream and More truck is really just his postretirement business. Really. “I get no end of teasing from my former associates when we get together and catch up on what we’ve been doing since we were ‘on the job,’ ” said Jones, who rather looks the part in trendy dark shades that would have made the ever fashionable Agent J proud. Rather than the MIB black suit and tie, Jones’ uniform is a white cotton T-shirt and hat emblazoned with the Mr. J’s logo. If Jones does get a bit full of himself in light of his once storied career, his wife and Mr. J’s sidekick is on hand to keep his ego right-sized. “It gets him away from Judge Judy,” Audrey ChowJones ribbed, flashing a grin that is her day job’s stock in trade at One Senior Place in Viera. “Seriously, she’s right,” Jones said of his guilty pleasure. “After you have done such intense work over the years, you can’t just stop and do nothing. You have to have a reason to get off the couch.” The pair met in as unlikely a way as Jones came by his second career. Operating under the radar, he met a leasing manager to check out a rental at the start of his gig in New Jersey as an air marshal. The potential landlord brought along her sister. Jones took the apartment and the sister, the former Audrey Chow. Jones’ job intensified after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, which took place across the Hudson River from his office. The smoke and stench hung in the air for months over both home and workplace, Chow-Jones said. The world changed for everyone after that day, but especially for Jones, special agent supervisor. His FAA job and those of many other national safety agencies were placed under a newly created department, Homeland Security. While

air marshals previously rode on international flights, they would now accompany every domestic flight. Invisible to the average Joe, agents would now need to pore over every airport for any sign of vulnerability as well. While that has always been the case, it now seemed never ending as new X-ray-type equipment went into development and deployment. Jones took full retirement from the federal law enforcement career he started at the end of his U.S. Army deployment to Vietnam. The Joneses sought solace far south of the frost line. In 2004, they moved into the dream home built for them from scratch in the Sonoma community of Viera. They discovered that for some reason and for many reasons, many of their Northeast peers in law enforcement also chose Brevard County for their post-9/11 lives. What made the formerly buttoned-down Jones pursue a future in ice cream? He had a new administration to impress,
“It was a joy of youth to drop whatever you were doing and race toward the music when you heard it, begging your parents for money along the way.”
ruled by tiny heads of state he would need to work hard to attract to his new Florida home: grandchildren. “I grew up with ice cream trucks,” Jones said. “It was a joy of youth to drop whatever you were doing and race toward the music when you heard it, begging your parents for money along the way.” Jones stooped to hand over the counter two cones, an ice cream sandwich and a Spider-Man ice pop to some children, their nostalgic parents posing with them for a photo. “In Florida, kids have never heard of an ice cream truck,” Jones said. “I thought: It’s Florida, it gets hot, ice cream is cold, kids love ice cream, I’d like to see my grandchildren.
When I put it all together, it all added up.” For more information or to book Mr. J’s for parties, go to mrjsicecream.com or call 321626-0044. VV

The next items may be less commonly known, but are a good list to be aware of. Silica gel packs are often used to absorb moisture with leather, medication and in some food packaging. Although silica is considered “biologically and chemically inert,” it can cause nausea, vomiting and inappetence if ingested. Toilet water with added tank drop-ins contain corrosive agents (alkali or cationic detergents). With dilution by the toilet water, the cleaning agent is less damaging but can still cause mild vomiting and nausea. Birth control pills contain estrogen and/or progesterone. Estrogen can cause bone marrow suppression and some oral contraceptives also contain iron. Anti-depressants, NSAIDS and all other human prescriptions should be kept away from pets, and you should call your veterinarian if your pet ingests any medication not prescribed for them. While liquid potpourri may seem harmless, it contains essential oils and cationic detergents, both of which can be harmful. Because product labels may not list ingredients, it is wise to assume any liquid potpourri may contain these
ingredients, which can cause irritation of the GI system, sometimes even ulceration. Bread dough, when ingested, can rise in the stomach due to the animal’s body heat. Alcohol is produced in the rising process and the dough expands. Signs seen can include abdominal pain, bloat, vomiting and depression. Mothballs, containing naphthalene, can be toxic even when only one is ingested. Signs may include vomiting, anemia, lethargy and seizures. Hepatitis and kidney failure are possible in severe cases.

I had wanted a Pomeranian puppy since I was 7 years old, and three years later when my parents thought I was mature enough, I finally got one. Lulu was the cutest thing I had ever seen. SCHOOL
Viera school the newest, brightest jewel in BCSD crown By Linda Wiggins
When Viera Charter School opens its doors for the first time on August 14, a new era begins. Students will get the best of both worlds, a private school education using public school dollars. The school’s focus on STEM ― Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics ― will not only draw the best and brightest from Viera and beyond, but also produce students that will eventually feed into higher education and the space and defense industry. “The time is right, and it’s really just in time,” said VHS school board chairman Robert Jordan, a former engineering management team leader for the duration of the U.S. space shuttle program. While VCS receives funds from the Brevard County School District based on student enrollment, it is governed by its own school board and has fewer state and federal regulations to answer to, allowing for more out-of-the-box thinking and leadership. “This is the educational focus we need to build the skills it will take to shape the next generation of space talent,” Jordan said. Inaugural administrative leadership is both local and regional, new and mature. Julie Cady’s students at Quest Elementary School aren’t losing a teacher, they’re gaining a vice principal, at their new school, that is. “I’m really excited that some of my students will be moving over,” Cady said of students transferring to the school this month. It is Cady’s first administrative post. “We developed a bond that results in excellent behavior and a desire to achieve. I look forward to building that kind of relationship with all of the VCS students.” Cady earned her doctorate in March, giving her a necessary edge in gaining the post at the school. She already had an advantage as an advanced academics teacher. “The standards for leadership at this school are very high,” Jordan said. He and fellow board members led Cady and her new boss, VCS principal Dr. Robert Spellman, on a tour of the facility under construction ahead of schedule.
22
Viera Charter School will serve approximately 650 students in 33 classrooms in a 40,344-square-foot, twostory state-of-the-art facility. An additional 300 student stations will be developed for the 20142015 school year. Plans include construction of a second, 20,000-square-foot building within two years, expanding enrollment capacity to approximately 850 students, grades kindergarten to eighth. More than 1,600 student applications were received for the 672 student spaces available in the Phase 1 development. “We are getting two incredibly qualified and talented leaders, each complementing the other with their various strengths,” Jordan said. One of Cady’s selling points was her familiarity with Viera, which would give Spellman’s regional strengths a chance to grow local legs. Cady has received numerous awards as a highly effective educator, including the 2010 PRISM Award, 2010 Brevard County Schools’ Exemplary Mathematics Teacher of the Year, Brevard County Area IV Teacher of the Year and Brevard County’s Award of Excellence for seven years. Spellman has been a special education teacher, district administrator, headmaster, adjunct professor and principal, including principal and director of education for the Lake Wales-based Vanguard School, a boarding school for students with special needs. His son and daughter are recent graduates. “We’re looking forward to creating an environment where students learn in different ways, and are respected for their differences,” Spellman said. He joined the tour to preview the school construction, including the budding science lab and school crowning jewel. “It’s awesome!” said the rising third grader, who like his school mates will don a uniform of khaki pants and white shirt, or alternate color according to grade. The choice of the school was less on aesthetics, however, and more on function, according to his mother and school board member, Kim Africano. “It will be great for Joey to have that focus on math and science,” she said. “Actually, it’s never been more vital that every child have it.” For more information, call 321-541-1434 or go to vieracharterschool.com. Summer camp turns world mission Last chance for school supplies
While free school supplies in the community may have already been designated or distributed, local schools want to make sure low-income families have what students need. “If a parent or guardian is truly without, call your school’s office to let them know,” said Patty Roissier of Suntree Elementary School. To reach any Brevard public school, call 321-633-1000, ext. 500 and ask to be connected.

Most summer camps teach a skill, provide socialization or just give youngsters and parents alike a break over the long summer. Catie Sergis’ summer camp went above and beyond, verging on a mission trip. She traveled to her grandparents’ native Greece for a cultural immersion, at a time when the country’s very existence is at risk of economic collapse and resultant unrest. “Our visit by more than 200 American Greeks went a long way to pump up the local economy of the small villages in the area,” said Sergis, a 17-year-old rising senior at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. She attends St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church in Suntree. The country is desperate for U.S. dollars, as well as tourism funds of any currency. “We got a visit for an entire day from a group called Repower Greece to downplay how bad things are and persuade us that Greece is getting better, that it is still a great place for tourism, which is a mainstay of the
economy,” Sergis said. The purpose of the summer camp was as much to steep youth in their cultural and religious heritage as it was to help them bond with each other. They are a minority in most U.S. communities. St. Katherine’s is the only Greek Orthodox church in Brevard, compared to about 500 churches of other denominations. As most in the nation do, it functions as much as a community educator on the value of all things Greek as it does a cultural touchstone for its own faithful. Sergis is among the youth who perform traditional dance to live ethnic music and song at the popular twice yearly Greek festivals. St. Katherine’s priest, Father Demetri Tsigas, confirmed the unhappy state of affairs in the land from which he hails. “It’s a very bad situation,” Tsigas said. “But it is largely one of its own making. Leaders ‘cooked the books’ to enter the European Economic Community, and Greece and the EU are now seeing the consequences. Many people have a deep sense of entitlement and

they don’t want to work.” Greece is seen as the historic cradle of Christianity, the language being the first the Bible was translated into from the original Hebrew and Aramaic. The once mighty empire is seen as a warning for the leader of the free world should the United States similarly veer from its founding principals, said Tsigas, who is the first to admit he personally holds conservative views. “The Greeks you see in this country left their homeland because they wanted to work hard to help themselves, their families and to help others. My hope is that there will be a spiritual awakening in Greece and around the world. There’s no free lunch, and freedom isn’t free either.” In addition to making some good friends who share her Greek American culture and faith, Sergis found that one feeds the other. “The culture is really about the Orthodox religion, with its stories and its values. If we stay connected with our culture, we will automatically be staying close to our faith, and vice versa.” VV

FCAT’s demise: goodbye and good riddance, parents say By Linda Wiggins
Goodbye FCAT, hello the next generation of school standards testing. The beleaguered Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test will be phased out by the 2014-2015 school year. The standards bar has already been set higher in the process that began in 2011. Local school officials complained that it is unfair to students, schools and the school districts that depend on high scores for everything from passing grades, teacher pay and resources, to the pride that makes surrounding residential
“These grades mean more to some of the parents than the actual subject grades on their children’s report cards, in part because it affects our school’s grades.
property values soar. “Our students’ scores went up this year from an average of 3.3 to 3.5, said Brevard County School District spokesperson Michelle Irwin. “Because of the higher standards, the students actually declined in performance, and that sets in motion lower scores for
their schools. This is not fair to students or their teachers who work so hard to achieve. While FCAT grades for each school were not expected to be released until early this month, it already is known that Brevard third graders placed in the top 4 percentile across the state.

Many parents across Brevard anxiously awaited the late June arrival of their children’s FCAT results, available now from school offices. The beleaguered assessment test will be replaced after next year.
Scores may also suffer as the new standards and testing mechanism are put in place. Florida will be the 46th state to adopt the new Common Core standards. The likely new testing mechanism will be another anacronym to become a household word, the PARCC evaluation, or Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. If PARCC is chosen, assessments will likely be combined with traditional end-of-year exams on each subject, especially in middle and high schools. As it will likely look for different benchmarks and have students reply in a different format from the familiar FCAT, there will likely be a temporary student learning curve. “One of the benefits of this change is that students who move to another state won’t lag behind or sit idle while the subject matter catches up to them, Irwin said. Parents have complained that the FCAT is so stressful, and pressure from teachers and administrators so great, that children as young as third graders actually lose sleep and break out in nervous disorders. That is the first year the FCAT is administered, and actually determines whether third graders will move on to fourth grade or be held back. Notes are sent home in preparation for the FCAT telling parents to be sure students are well rested and fed before the exams. FCAT tests for reading, writing and math acumen have continued through 12th grade. Another complaint from the community overall is that the FCAT is not a true reflection of learning, but
rather how well students perform on the test. Practice FCATs start in first grade to get students familiar with how questions will be phrased and topics likely to be covered. The State Board of Education responded to the complaints of unfairness in the transition away from FCAT by relaxing punitive actions against schools and school districts whose students appear to drop in performance. Florida education commissioner Tony Bennett recommended on July 12 and the board agreed July 15 to hold schools harmless in the transition to higher standards. “What a relief for our parents and students, said Nicki Hensley, a parent at Manatee Elementary School and its incoming PTO president. Her 7 year old will dodge the FCAT bullet. Other parents picked up their students’ FCAT scores that arrived in all school offices in late June and will be available through the August 14 start of the school year. “The FCAT hard copies could not arrive fast enough. Parents responded with either delight or disappointment. These grades mean more to some than the actual grades on their children’s report cards, in part because it affects our school’s overall grade. Also, many parents think the FCAT is viewed as an indication of their students’ intelligence, versus what they have learned at school. For more information or to be connected to a child’s school, call 321-631-1000, ext. 500. Teacher inspired by summer workshop By Carl Kotala
Students at Stone Middle School can expect to hear all about what language arts teacher Beverly Hamilton did this summer. As one of 80 teachers from a pool of 200 applicants who were selected as a National Endowment for the Humanities Scholar, Hamilton attended a oneweek workshop in Savannah, Ga. The subject was “Gullah Voices: Traditions and Transformations,” which explored the history and the cultural memory of the Gullah people through the arts. The Gullah Corridor, as it’s called, stretches between North Carolina and Florida. The Gullah people, descended from rice plantation slaves, preserved many common elements of their home culture in Sierra Leone, including music, dance and oral traditions. “My expectations were far exceeded,” Hamilton said of the workshop. “I went in with the expectation that my takeaway would be some lesson plans for my students.

Stone Middle School language arts teacher Beverly Hamilton felt “privileged” to be one of 80 teachers to be selected as a National Endowment for the Humanities Scholar and attend the workshop “Gullah Voices: Traditions and Transformations.”
But not only do I have lesson plans, I have a lifetime of questions to pursue about this community and a drive to visit some of these places again.” Hamilton, 49, has always had an interest in black history, especially as it relates to Brevard County. She has even started her own blog, where she keeps historical information. It can be found at mybrevardstory. blogspot.com.
Donations send ‘community’s’ children back to school with sparkle By Linda Wiggins
Do you remember the smell of new school supplies and the anticipation of going back to school? New clothes purchased by your mom or dad during shopping trips with the family may have come automatically with the required pencils, papers, notebooks and backpacks. Patty Hurst, donor relations manager for the Devereux residential school for children with behavioral and emotional challenges, said her facility’s children and others in foster care experience it differently. “Not only are they no longer residing with their biological family, they may have been moved to a new school district and have the challenge of making new friends,” Hurst said. “Additionally, children who have been neglected or abused have had school truancy problems and lag behind in performance.” Donating school supplies and new clothes makes more than a physical difference, Hurst said. “It also sends a message that the community cares

about them. To a child who has been abused and is battling issues of low self worth, this can be a powerful message.” In addition to supplies and clothes for children who reside at the school, Devereux collects items for distribution to half the children in the dependency system, for which it provides case management and behavioral health services. Children’s Home Society of Florida’s Brevard provides these services to the remainder of the children in foster care, including residents of the Hacienda Girls Ranch, and also is collecting supplies and new outfits. There are 237 children in foster care in Brevard and 1,700 at risk of placement in care, according to Geo Ropert, spokesperson for Brevard Family Partnership, for which Devereux and CHS are contractors. For more information or to donate through Devereux, email phurst@devereux.org or call 321-258-1772. For CHS, email Christa.Griffin@ chsfl.org or call 321-7523170, ext. 237. VV
The workshop, which featured teachers from 26 different states, proved to be quite inspiring for Hamilton in a number of ways. “I also see some implications of things I can do in the classroom to help students build a cultural identity by understanding other people’s cultural identity and developing some pride within themselves,” she said. “It’s also going to help me teach folktales. “… The Gullah community was an oral history. They taught languages and new skills as slaves with Brer Rabbit and other kinds of folk stories. They all had an intention of teaching a lesson about life.” VV

Aging Matters of Brevard has started a new support group for grandparents and others 55 years or older who are raising their grandchildren or others under age 18. “Grandparents raising grandchildren may find it difficult to keep up with the technology that is so critical to youngsters today,” said Heather Dimmig, Ph.D., vice president of operations for Aging Matters and coordinator of all caregiver support programs. “Many of them have never been on the Internet, let alone be able to keep up with the texting, social networking, even textbooks and school work on line in some cases.” The program also delivers tutoring, parenting and nutrition classes, and legal, emotional and financial support. August’s meetings take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14 at the Joe Lee Smith Recreation Center, 419 Washington Ave. in Cocoa; from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday Aug. 17 at the The Sunflower House on Merritt Island, on the east side of the Merritt Square Mall, 777 E. Bowl for the Troops brings emotional health By Linda Wiggins
Women Reaching Women are looking for a few good men ― and women — to slip on bowling shoes and knock down pins for the troops. The fifth annual Bowl for the Troops fundraiser provides professional counseling for military women and children who struggle to understand the effects of war on their loved one, including post-traumatic stress, brain injury and other disabilities. “There are many pressures that come against the family unit in our society,” said WRW founder Donna Long. “That is why we provide funds to those families struggling to stay emotionally and mentally healthy.” WRW partners with Christopher Counseling to provide behavioral health services. WRW is sponsoring the Sept. 20 to 22 Brevardbased special veterans retreat to be held at the Orlando Hilton to accommodate 650 attendees, including active and veteran military members and their spouses. Coming Home to Earth: Reconnecting with Life and Loved Ones after Trauma will be hosted by the Yellow Ribbon military support agency. Viera psychologist and veteran Dr. Scott

Lounge owners create place to relax
Tracy Rinehart prepares for a September opening of The Cellar Door Wine and Beer Lounge at the Boardwalk Plaza in Viera, which she will run with her husband, James.
When they open The Cellar Door Wine and Beer Lounge in Viera next month, James and Tracy Rinehart hope to strike a relaxed, fun tone. “We don’t want the loud music and sometimes rough atmosphere of a bar, but some place we as a couple would love to go and relax,” said Tracy Rinehart, who for many years has been a wine consultant to area retail stores. James Rinehart has run restaurants for 25 years. In addition to a creative wine and craft beer selection, the lounge will offer an initial assortment of cheeses, fruits, baguettes and chocolates. For more information, go to Facebook. com/TheCellarDoorWineLounge. VV Ordered Chaos Dance Studio is set to open this month in Suntree, at 3270 Suntree Blvd., Suite 112, between N. The studio’s motto is, “Inspiring creativity within structure.” “I am so excited to be serving the Viera/Suntree community.” For more information, call 321-759-1316, or go to orderedchaosdance.com.VV

The Dairy Queen on North Wickham Road in Suntree has always been a favorite with ice cream enthusiasts as well as the local lunch bunch. And with the addition of Orange Julius and Smoothies, it is even more popular. The items were added recently to fulfill a need for healthier treats. However, the Blizzard shakes remain the best seller for Dairy Queen, comprising 40 percent of the overall sales. Steve “A.J.” Ajdinovich, owner and manager of the Wickham Road eatery, has been with Dairy Queen for 15 years and explains that the new treats are part of an overall remodel of Dairy Queens everywhere. The remodel of the Suntree store will be complete once the outside of the store is painted. There are more than 6,000 Dairy Queens worldwide, most of which are embracing the new menu. Ajdinovich is proud that his store, which he opened in 1999, handles about 200 transactions a day. Being a “people person”, he said he enjoys meeting and serving the local clientele. It is a far cry from his earlier jobs as a K-9 police officer and paramedic in the state of

Ohio, which he held for 18 years. When he moved to Florida, he told his wife, Michelle, that he wanted to do something entirely different. He researched several opportunities before deciding on a Dairy Queen franchise. Ajdinovich’s son, 27-yearold Chad, also works at the Dairy Queen. His other son, Chase, is an engineer by trade. Many of the Dairy Queens are family owned, Ajdinovich says. Orange Julius has been popular at malls all over the United States for years. Expanding to the Dairy Queen stores is the first time it has ventured outside that arena. Utilizing real fruit in the orange drinks and smoothies, they are popular with those who are lactose intolerant or have other reasons not to indulge in ice cream treats. The Orange Julius is available in eight flavors, including the original orange. The store, located at 7660 N. Wickham Rd. in Suntree, is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. On Sunday it is open noon to 9 p.m. The lobby closes at 9 p.m. every night with the drive-through open later on Friday and Saturday. VV

The leader of the Thursday, Aug. 8 writers workshop, Titusville author Fay Lamb shows her book, “Stalking Willow.”
Evelyn Miracle. “A compliment, then a suggestion of how the writing could be more clear or impactful, followed by another strong point of the writing. It is a very gentle process that encourages and teaches at the same time.” Golden said she was inspired to launch a local chapter two years ago because input from other writers was such a help to her craft. Like Lamb, she said writing is as much a compulsion as a pleasure. “Knowing that someone was touched by my writing and helped by my insights felt very rewarding. That is why I write. I want to show the reality of God working in my life,” Golden said. “My writing shows how He speaks to me in the most mundane happenings of my day.” The group meets from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month at Ma’gen Da’vid Messianic Synagogue, 3815 N. U.S. 1, Suite 123 in Cocoa. Attendees are invited to attend two meetings at no charge. In order to be critiqued, one must be a paid member; the cost is $40 a year. Have you ever had a hankering to write a book but were greeted by a persistent blank screen? Author and publishing representative Fay Lamb will show you how, for free. “You’ve Decided to Write Fiction: Ten Elements That Will Put Life in Your Prose” will take place from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m., Thursday, August 8 at the Merritt Island Public Library, 1195 N. Courtenay Parkway. The workshop is sponsored by Word Weavers Space Coast, a writers support group, of which Lamb is a member. Lamb and her husband, Marc, live in Titusville, where multigenerations of their families have lived. “I can’t remember a time when I haven’t written or told stories. Writing is not just something that I do. It’s something that I have to do,” said Lamb, author of “Stalking Willow,” released in May by Write Integrity Press. “Charisse” will be released this month and “Better than Revenge” will be released in September. “As most writers discover, I learned very quickly that writing is like all other art,” said Lamb, an acquisition editor for Pelican Book Group. She provides advice for self-editing on the publishing group’s blog, Tactical Tuesday. “You must practice to achieve success.” Word Weavers, founded in 1997, is a national group forum for Christian writers who critique each other’s work in a face-to-face format to learn about and improve their craft. It is open to writers of all skill levels. “We use the ‘sandwich method’ of critique,” said Gail Golden, vice president and cofounder of Space Coast group with current president

Buckaroo Ball rustles up some charitable fun

Patrons provided therapy horses with hay and their clients with healing as proceeds of the annual Harmony Farms Buckaroo Ball July 6 topped $40,000. At the event, Viera Company executive and Duran Golf Club director Dave Tomczak pressed a check for $10,000 into founder Pam Rogan’s hand. The nonprofit provides equine-assisted therapy for children and adults with emotional, mental and physical disabilities, recently adding a
certified program for injured veterans. “What a delight. We were so moved by the generosity of everyone there,” Rogan said. The need for money is critical this year, but not just because the demand for services always exceeds the supply. A capital campaign is underway to build a new barn on land recently donated by A. Duda & Sons and the Viera Company. The move will allow Harmony Farms to expand and add horses and therapists to the team. It also will provide
the popular nonprofit with land of its own for the first time ever, allowing it to pursue grants for facilities construction and grounds improvements. Currently located on land north of Space Coast Stadium provided rent-free from Duda and the Viera Company, the farm will move to its location south of Wickham Road’s west end in the next year. A sea of 700 assembly-line volunteers packed 100,000 meals in four hours at Suntree United Methodist Church July 20. By Linda Wiggins
Paula and Dennis McCabe’s Nerve2Serve pulled off social networking magic to become one of only two Florida nonprofits to win the $25,000 State Farm Neighborhood Assist Grant, courtesy of the 46,000 votes their group was able to inspire. “Through faith and elbow grease we asked everybody we knew to vote, and they asked everybody they knew, and so on, and so on. It was like a game and everybody got in on it,” said Paula McCabe, Ph.D. The local psychologist put her practice on hold and otherwise committed household income to launch the all-volunteer effort, which mobilizes teens to help out worthy causes. Nerve2Serve partnered with the Central Florida-based national nonprofit Feeding Children Everywhere to mobilize 700 hair-net clad volunteers at the McCabe’s Suntree United Methodist Church July 20. They packed 100,000 meals in four hours, as fast as 7,500 every 15 minutes. “Our teens decide what is the greatest need and go out into the community to help, asking nothing in return,” McCabe said. She shouted to be heard over the booming Top 40 R&B dance music that peaked energy and inspired breakouts of conga lines and screams
when each large box was loaded with packed meals. “I don’t know who gets more out of it, the kids or the people they serve.” Riley Shortt and her friends came on their own, as did many youths from many different churches, without urging or transportation from their parents. “I’ve had so many people come up to me and help out my family during hard times. I want to do the same and help others,” she said. Nerve2Serve spent the entire $25,000 on food, bulk purchased for a cost of 25 cents a serving. Feeding Children founder Dan Campbell came up with a unique way to get healthy food into hungry U.S. stomachs that even when filled are nutrition starved. Typically, church and nonprofit food pantry shelves are lined with highly processed nonperishable items of little nutritional value, nearing manufacturers’ expiration dates. Meals the volunteers packed in assembly line fashion included lentils, rice, freezedried vegetables and a super food — Himalayan pink salt. “This salt has all the trace minerals the body needs. At 98 percent pure, it is perhaps the healthiest thing on the planet,” Campbell said. “The lentils and rice are high in protein,
and with the veggies each meal is perfectly nutritionally balanced. The bags will be sent home in the backpacks of lowincome students, along with preparation instructions and access to local free cooking classes in the event the students are left to cook for themselves. “The meal is cooked like a casserole and other foods can be added as available ― like inexpensive chicken thighs and a can of corn or other items from traditional food pantries ― and accented with spices to appeal to any ethnic taste. We eat this in our own home and it is delicious.” Arty Pagan represented Florida’s 10,000 State Farm associates at the event to officially give Nerve2Serve the check. More than 3,000 organizations applied for the grant. A youth advisory council for the company picked 200 from that total, and those selected set their social networks ablaze to get votes. “We took on big cities like Chicago and Miami,” Pagan said, “and our little Melbourne won.” For more information on McCabe’s group, go to nerve2serve.com; for Campbell’s group, go to feedingchildreneverywhere. com. A record 10 Boy Scouts in Suntree Troop 224 made Eagle Scout in the past year, receiving honors at the July 9 Brevard County Commission meeting. Fifty members have achieved the Eagle Scout rank since the troop’s start in 1995. The troop has 40 boys ages 11 to 17. “We are very proud of our young men,” said Scoutmaster Peter McMahan, who also was honored, along with fellow leaders Pascale Schafer and Bruce Sieck, as well as Suntree United Methodist Church for hosting the troop. McMahan recently was named Scoutmaster of the Year for the Challenger District, which spans Viera and Suntree to the south end of the county and includes 55 Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs. Troop 224 is the highest achieving troop in the district and recently was awarded the Excellence in Training and National Outdoor Challenge Unit awards. Local Non-Profit Raises $10,000 for Isolation Room at Animal Care Center
Shot
PARTING
Comfortable kennels, easy-to-clean surfaces and peaceful surroundings for ailing dogs will soon be a reality at Brevard County’s South Animal Care Center thanks to the non-profit organization Brevard Aiding Shelter Animals Project (ASAP). The conversion from locker room to medical isolation room will be a significant improvement from the area in which shelter dogs currently convalesce. Brevard ASAP raised $10,000 for this project through fundraisers and a generous grant from the Community Foundation for Brevard. “We are so grateful to Community Foundation for Brevard and The MNT Fund for their generous donation toward the cost of the licensed contractor, Sunshine State Construction. Tile was donated by Island Tile & Marble of Melbourne and Home Depot has offered a discount on building supplies. We are so pleased to be able to give this life-saving gift to Brevard County Animal Services and want to thank every one of our supporters for helping us,” said Sherri Binggeli, president of Brevard ASAP’s board of directors. Fundraising for this project began in July 2012 with an “Ales for Tails” evening at World of Beer in Viera. ASAP then held its second annual Poker Run organized by the Booze Fighters motorcycle club. DeLaura Middle School, Satellite High School Animal Rights Club and the Melbourne Super Photographed at the Hero/Villain Walk also raised funds on ASAP’s behalf. In early Viera Wetlands 2013, ASAP successfully applied for a $5,000 grant through the Community Foundation for Brevard. “Community involvement is vital to Animal Services’ mission to save the lives of animals in our custody. We are grateful for Brevard ASAP’s efforts to bring this improvement (Grus canadensis pratensis) to our facility,” said Karla Torpy, Director of Brevard Animal Services and Enforcement.
