Katie McCluskey had an idea to make inexpensive holiday decorations and gifts not only to save money, but also to reduce the amount of trash that ends up in landfills. People loved them so much, she decided to take her treasures to festivals to at least show others how they can do the same. “It’s a mission for me to educate others about what they can do to help the environment, but hey, if I can make some money for the holidays, that would be great, too,” said McCluskey, showing off wreaths, angels and ornaments made of rolled up white sheet music with festive-looking musical notes, garnished with red, green, gold and silver trim. Her friends and festival boothmate cohorts, Debby and Ron Linder, started a company called Recycled Treasures, focusing on creative jewelry fashions. “The kids love it, especially the bracelets made from the pop-top soda can tabs, woven together with the stretchy plastic cord in all colors, which are old conference lanyards worn around the neck,” Debby Linder said. Many of the fashions look like art, some made with shinedup old copper tubing and other metals welded or glued to other

Christmas is just days away and 10 miles west of Titusville. The little town of a few thousand residents, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, is the destination for tens of thousands of visitors, anxious to get their holiday mail postmarked from the town that is decorated year round and where Santa has his own personal mailbox where children may send their wish lists. What you won’t generally find in Christmas is traffic — or a traffic light. Sam and Suzan Wilson visited Christmas recently from Charleston, S.C., and made time for their son, Samuel, to mail his and his sister’s red envelopes containing the items they would love to see under their tree. “I would like some binoculars,” said Samuel, taking a moment to hug the wooden Rudolph next to the mailbox. The family enjoyed Fort Christmas, built Dec. 25 through 27, 1837 by U.S. soldiers to help settlers battle the Seminole Indians. The current buildings at the fort were reconstructed in the mid 1970s as a Bicentennial project. There is a museum and a schoolhouse and several replicas of homes from that era. The park is open daily. The staff provides guided tours. Admission is free. “We’ve also enjoyed the picnic area,” said Suzan Wilson. “Samuel loves the playground and the Indian museum.” Visitors may want to stop by Country Craft n’ Christmas, a shop filled with unique, handmade and specialty items. Florida Cracker BBQ lays claim to the only restaurant in town and for those looking for Christmas “spirits,” Pat’s Place is the local pub. Christmas is located on Highway 50, 10 miles west of Titusville, about an hour from anywhere in Brevard. VV

Churches put meats on holiday tables By Linda Wiggins
Families in need traditionally stop by food pantries for fixings for holiday meals, but a turkey or a ham on the table can be a rare treat. Churches in the Viera and Suntree area are pooling their funds to “meat” that need. “We decided to put our resources where they are most needed,” said Suntree/Viera Area Association of Churches president David Lindemer, pastor at Pineda Presbyterian Church. The group is donating $20 gift cards that can only be used for holiday meats and adding them to the holiday meal packages prepared by S/VAAC member Advent Lutheran Church, to be distributed to clients who pick up food from its community pantry at 6 p.m. Thursdays. “That’s the one thing we typically don’t have is anything but canned meat,” said Joyce Cowart, Advent pantry coordinator. “If anyone to help out a hungry family that is down on ! g sswants inluck t e their and brighten their holidays, this is an excellent way a in s btor do it.” Bu of For more information on the community pantry or to donate, call Cowart at 321-259-8515.

Becky Hennessey helps sons, Joseph and Aiden, learn to use the new touch-screen computer in the children’s area at the Suntree/Viera Library, paid for by Friends of the Library. By Linda Wiggins
Joseph Hennessy reached a tiny finger toward the computer screen and looked back to his mom for reassurance. “It’s OK, you can touch it,” Becky Hennessy told him. “He’s not used to being allowed.” The nonprofit Friends of the Suntree/Viera Library donated funds to purchase a touch-screen computer and it is a hands-down hit with youngsters. Rather than click with a mouse, they can touch the screen and drag items around like an iPad. Two children can use the station at a time, wearing headsets so the sound does not travel. The station is loaded with popular games whose colorful characters, such as Dora the Explorer,

Spongebob SquarePants and Curious George, invite the children to play while secretly imparting the basics of reading, math and science. The money comes from book sales and other fundraisers that allow the library to purchase items not allowed in meager budgets of recent years. Last month’s book sale generated nearly $5,000, or roughly the amount it takes to run the summer reading program. In it, the Friends lure children to libraries with the promise of a Book Buck for 20 minutes of reading a day, alone or with a parent. The bucks are tallied to “purchase” prizes of the child’s choosing. Entertainers perform for the children throughout the summer. The next book sale is in
April, and the library will accept donations of books through the sale. Friends of the Library’s role is to enhance patrons’ experience and use of the facility, but many of the donations go toward children and youth to get them hooked on reading for research and entertainment. The success of that role has unintended consequences, but that’s OK, according to Suntree/Viera Library director Mary Scholtz. “When you see a child screaming while they are going out the door, it’s not because they are misbehaving,” Sholtz said. “It’s because they don’t want to leave.” For more information about donating books or money, call 321-255-4405. Imagine an ancient cathedral where gleaming pipes reach heavenward, each vibrant note transporting the listener just a little closer to God. There has been no such church in Suntree or Viera that could provide this spiritual transformation through music. Until now. Advent Lutheran Church has installed a $350,000 pipe organ, custom forged in Georgia and built on site by the world-famous A.E. Schleuter Pipe Organ Company. Volunteers happily donated the money because it was a worthy contribution to the congregation and to the community, according to Advent’s pastor. “There is just something about the music played through a real pipe organ that changes you,” Rev. David Jahn said. “Music is very important to our Lutheran heritage, and historically we have enjoyed this experience until migrating to the United States, or certainly to Brevard. That’s why when we decided to make this commitment, we raised the money very quickly, because so many of us know what an important resource this is to our faith.” The pipes range from as small as a pencil to as tall as 17 feet and a foot in diameter – 2,056 in all. Cased in hardwood lattice frames, they create a display behind the altar that is as much a work of art as the music that is played. The pipes are on the other side of the new chapel’s wall that faces north Wickham Road in Suntree, the tallest structure from Viera Hospital to the west, to the Imperial Plaza and Mercedes Homes buildings to the west. A pointed façade more than four stories tall, its white cross measures nearly that height; lit at night, it can be

seen for miles. In addition to the spiritual aspects of the sound that reverberates through the listener’s body, the pipe organ will be a draw to professional musicians and even new congregants, according to the head church organist. “People look to the quality of the music to determine where they will perform,” said Lori Jahn, organist and pastor’s wife. She noted that the shortage of church organists will only get worse in the coming years, and that the organ will attract concerts for community use. “It can also determine where they will worship.” A dedication is planned for Sunday, Jan. 20. Neighbors of Suntree host holiday luncheon for Sharing Center of Central Brevard
Needy children know no affiliation
BY MARY BROTHERTON
The Neighbors of Suntree’s (NOS) annual holiday luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m Thursday, Dec. 6 in the Suntree Country Club’s main dining room. Festive and seasonal table centerpieces will become door prizes and NOS will hold a 50/50 drawing as well as an additional drawing for 21 gift baskets. The luncheon cost is $28. Attendees may choose from filet mignon, crab stuffed flounder, pecan crusted chicken and roasted vegetable lasagna. The NOS formed in 1984 to provide a means for Suntree area residents to become acquainted with their neighbors and the community. The group presents informative programs and promotes social and charitable projects. The organization’s goal is to encourage friendliness and to welcome people of all ages and interests to participate in the many activities and programs it offers. Currently NOS is requesting luncheon participants to bring canned goods and non-perishable food items to the luncheon. These will be given to the Sharing Center of Central Brevard, contact Diane Angell at 321-751-4255 for more information. VV

When Bob Barnes approaches civic groups and churches in the Viera and Suntree area to tell them local children needed to eat on weekends, too, many are puzzled and shocked. “It just never occurred to me that the food we give out through our churches might not reach the hungry children in a family,” said Tony Love, a founding member of the Suntree Rotary Club, which raised $5,000 to help Barnes’ group at the Taste at Suntree, held at the Suntree Country Club. Local restaurants donate their signature items, with Niki’s Restaurant taking People’s Choice. Barnes, founder of the Children’s Hunger Project, tells groups that food from community pantries may be misdirected for gain, or may not be prepared into meals for
the free breakfast and lunch that low-income children receive may be the only thing they eat all week. The nonprofit Children’s Hunger Project purchases individual-sized, pop-top cans of prepared meals, chocolate or white milk, cereal, breakfast bars and other items that do not need to be heated. Volunteers package and wrap the food kits in plastic wrap and deliver them to schools with high Title I enrollment, which means students qualify for free lunch due to financial need. The teachers, who Barnes says are the best judge of whether a student is too hungry to learn, place the packs in backpacks at the end of school day each Friday. Events like Suntree Rotary’s annual Taste at Suntree allow the project to expand to meet the great need, Barnes said.
The dinner was as fun as it was helpful, according to the event organizer. “We had a great time, and it really feels good to know that the money we raised is going to such a good cause,” said Taste at Suntree chairwoman, Joyce Hathaway. Active Viera Rotary members, such as Hathaway, joined the Suntree Rotary when the Viera club folded this past year, giving the event a boost. Barnes has gained a reputation for pricking the consciences of predominantly Christian groups who have an affinity for donating to and traveling to help the needy in foreign lands. “Here’s this Jewish boy in front of groups of Christians telling them to first help out the needy in their own backyard,” Barnes said with a chuckle, addressing the Suntree/Viera Area of Churches at a recent meeting. Tony Love is also a founding S/VAAC member. “He’s absolutely right,” Love said. “It’s certainly important that we are sharing our love around the globe, but right now the children who need us most are attending our local schools. “It’s exciting that there is such a creative way to meet their needs.” To help feed local children, go to TheChildrensHungerProject. org. The second annual Recycling Fun, Toy Swap and Drop off exceeded goals in collection of new and gently used toys and clothes for children, according to event organizers. Recycle Brevard! hosted the event to show children how much fun it is to use recycled materials, allowed them to swap toys they had tired of with gently used ones, and invited them to drop off gently used and new toys for children in need. “This year we managed to collect a huge amount of toys at our event, even more than last year,” said Marcia Booth of Recycle Brevard! “We could not fit it all in two vans and I had to drop off five huge bags of toys and clothing the next day.” The collection benefited Nana’s Children’s Home, a Christ-centered children’s residential home, and Friends of Children of Brevard County, which helps children who have been placed in protective or foster care. Blizzard at the Barn coming Dec. 9 By Linda Wiggins
Harmony Farms Blizzard at the Barn from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9 is the perfect opportunity to get a family photo taken with an equine miracle for a Christmas card that will be all the rave. “People come every year to have their picture taken, and they always tell us how people compliment them time after time,” said Pam Rogen, founder of Harmony Farms in Viera. The nonprofit venture rescues horses that have been traumatized, and then takes them through treatment and training to become therapy horses. The therapy has volumes of empirical evidence to prove its effectiveness, Rogan said. The agency has helped hundreds of children and adults with developmental delays, autism and other disorders to connect with people by first connecting with a horse, she added. “We have children who have never walked in their life, but on the back of the horse, they have working legs under them for the very first time,” said Pam Morrison, head certified equine therapist. Riding also strengthens interior muscles just by maintaining balance atop a horse, she added. Aside from the physical and

occupational therapy that is amplified, the emotional healing that a horse provides is unparalleled,” Morrison said. “Horses, especially those who have recovered from trauma, can sense emotions. They will demand that you calm down and trust them so they can put their trust in you and cooperate,” Morrison said. “This has a reciprocal effect, and the abused person begins to trust again.” So effective is equine therapy that Harmony Farms recently rolled out a therapy program to help veterans recover from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury sustained
in combat. “We have only scratched the surface on what we can do with horses, our four-legged miracle workers,” Rogan said. Blizzard at the Barn has been a traditional time for families of loved ones touched by the horses to bring gifts that keep the program rolling. Patrons can also buy treats to feed the horses. Other activities include a bake sale, crafts, games, farm animals, pony rides, live music and vendor tables and T-shirt sales. For more information, call -321-223-3518. VV

Local realtor loves to think pink By MARTHA MASIELLO
For the third year, community activist and realtor Susan Swanson, of Keller Williams Realty, channeled her energy and dedication into making a success of the Pink Martini Breast cancer fundraiser, held at the Heritage Isle Grand Ballroom. More than 225 men and women attended the Pink Martini Party. Ticket sales and a potpourri of silent auction items, along with donated services and products from businesses, media support, professionals, musicians and artisans helped Swanson attain her goal of providing knowledge and updates regarding this disease. “Bringing a consciousness to others, and providing hope and inspiration in finding a cure for breast and other cancers in my lifetime, is why I am committed”, Swanson said. Dr. Richard Levine, of Space Coast Cancer Center, spoke on new advances in the treatment of breast cancer and the importance of early detection. as a patient, which lead to her design of a post-surgical, antimicrobial, waterresistant garment. About one percent of all breast cancers occur in men, a condition most common among men who are 60–70 years of age. As in women, breast cancer in men can begin in the ducts and spread into surrounding cells. The most recent American Cancer Society estimates for breast cancer in men in the United States reveal
that about 2,190 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among men. Factors that increase risk include age, alcohol consumption, exposure to radiation, high estrogen levels, family history and weight. Funds are shared with the American Cancer Society and Space Coast Cancer Center Foundation, of which Swanson is a board member. For additional information call 321-987-9600. VV
When Pete Hogan, a Suntree homeowner, found a lost kitten and contacted Kaye McKinney at the Suntree Master HOA office, she utilized the network to address this need and found the kitten’s owner. Hogan said, “I was checking the pool deck after the last hurricane and I heard a little meowing noise. My wife and I fed the kitten and the next morning it had made itself at home on one of our chairs. I called the HOA office and she used the network to find the owner, Erin Bowen.”
McKinney said, “With a Community as large as Suntree, it’s a great way to communicate with the entire community.” She said an average of 400 people visit the site daily to access HOA documents, information about upcoming yard sales and other information, but being able to reunite lost pets with their families has given the network a warm and fuzzy feeling. 30 Days of Giving benefits Brevard area Sharing Centers this holiday season Share the spirit of the holidays by giving to those in need during 30 Days of Giving at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Brevard County residents are invited to participate in the new program, supporting area food banks and offering 70 percent off admission for up to six people to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex from Nov. 17 through Dec. 16, 2012. Through contributions of non-perishable food items, Brevard residents can support Central Brevard Sharing Center, North Brevard Charities and South Brevard Sharing Centers, who provide emergency assistance to individuals and families in need. According to David Brubaker, vice president, Central Brevard Sharing Center, one in four children in Brevard County go to bed hungry every night. Due to the kindness and generosity of others, area sharing centers are able to provide more than 25,000 pounds of food to 900 individuals and families a month. “We have seen a dramatic increase in food requests over the past four years. The timing of the food drive at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is perfect, as 75 percent of the food we distribute is collected during the holiday season, said Brubaker. To participate in the 30 Days of Giving, Brevard residents are encouraged to bring canned goods and non-perishable food items to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Entry Plaza. The suggested donation is at least one canned good or food item per guest. To receive the special “giving admission rate of $15 plus tax for adults and $10 plus tax for children 3-11 years, Brevard residents must present proof of residency in the form of a driver’s license or utility bill at the ticket window. Tickets must be purchased onsite and on the date of entry. Admission to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex includes the Kennedy Space Center Tour, Shuttle Launch Experience, Hubble 3D and Space Station 3D in IMAXŽ, and the U.S. Astronaut Hall of FameŽ, featuring a historic spacecraft, and the world’s largest collection of personal astronaut mementos. Also through the end of the year, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is featuring a series of behind-the-scenes special access tours. These KSC UpClose tours include rare access inside the Vehicle Assembly Building, Launch Control Center and Launch Pad 39-A. KSC Up-Close tour tickets are not included in regular admission.

Healthy habits need not take holiday hiatus By Linda Wiggins
There is no need to gain the average 5 to 15 holiday pounds that lead to the No. 1 item on the list of most people’s New Year’s resolutions, say local food fanciers and health experts. “Holiday meals can be healthy, colorful and sweet. Your guests and even your children will be taken in by the fresh tastes of food without added sugars and salts, and without them feeling deprived,” said dietician and author Nancy Heinrich, a member of the Viera Means Business monthly breakfast networking group. Her mission is to encourage low-glycemic foods whenever possible to avoid the onset of Type II diabetes that plagues increasing numbers of people middle age and older — with children increasingly affected — as well as allowing people with Type I, or juvenile diabetes, less medication. Chef Cathy Lawrence of The Christian Culinarian allows the natural goodness of the food to take center stage, rather than cover it up with excess sugars, spices, artificial flavors and salts. “People often tell us that a certain dish, even a commonly prepared food like a cheeseburger, is the best they have ever eaten. They always want to know what we did to make it that way,” Lawrence said. “Often it is what we don’t do.” Pushing away from the table and taking a walk to catch up with a Viera Voice photo holiday guest is one way to stay Chef Cathy Lawrence of The active. Christian Culinarian believes in highlighting the natural “Minor improvements in activity flavor of foods. will produce great results,” said certified health education specialist Michael Edwards, who was once the health education program manager at Patrick Air Force Base.
A great side effect?: less aches and pains caused by inactivity and even sweets that cause joint pain. Avoiding sweets and staying active can eliminate the need for over-the-counter pain medication so prevalent over the holidays, and cut back on depression so prevalent at this time of the year, he said. Chef Cathy provided a recipe to launch healthy holiday eating. Booked weekends through the holidays, she is available to cater holiday events though the week. Hawks will rely on skill, fitness
Holy Trinity runs away with Class 1A state titles
By Carl Kotala
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
The Viera High boys soccer team, shown here during a recent practice, will rely on its skill and fitness level this season. By Carl Kotala
Fewer games. More time to train. For Viera High boys soccer coach Joshua Neff, it’s a tradeoff worth making. That’s why the Hawks will play 10 fewer games this season in order to prepare themselves to make a run in the playoffs. “It was really frustrating last year to have lots of three (game) weeks, where the only thing you’re really doing at practice is recovery and making sure guys are healthy, instead of working on things you need to work on,” Neff said. Viera was off to a 1-1-1 start at the beginning of the season, but several players said they could absolutely feel a difference in their fitness levels compared to last season. In fact, there are a lot of things that are different about this year’s team compared to last year’s group. “No offense to the team last year, but we just played for ourselves, to be honest,” senior Christian Maxwell said. “We didn’t work as a team. This year, I actually feel like we have a family. This is our
family.” Maxwell is one of several seniors who have impressed Neff early on with their ability to adapt to the changes he has made and the leadership they have shown. Jordan Reed, who said he feels more fit now than while playing club soccer, has been a standout in the back. Cam Milks scored two goals in an 8-0 win against Space Coast, while Rafael Ayala had a hat trick. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Kutcher got the shutout. Then there is senior Edson Cantrero, who has been at the school for four years, but just came out for soccer this season. “He’s been a nice find,” Neff said. Nobody knew about him, nobody knew he played … but he’s a fantastic player.” By playing a fitness-based style that puts constant pressure on the opponent, the Hawks will be a tough matchup for anyone. And the payoff could be huge. “I think we just have so many diverse players, and heart — intensity, too,” Reed said. “The mental strength we have is so much better than last year.” VV
While Holy Trinity sophomore Julie Wollrath had a rather easy time picking up her second consecutive Class 1A state cross country girls individual championship, senior Alex Brown found himself in a back and forth race. And with 400 meters to go, he was trailing Trinity Prep’s Daniel Salas. “I just kind of realized that a state championship was on the line and I would try my best to get it,” said Brown, who passed Salas with roughly 70 meters remaining

to become the Class 1A boys state champion. Brown finished in 15 minutes, 37.69 seconds, with teammate Tristan Kattenberg third and sophomore Andrew Cacciatore ninth as Holy Trinity won the boys state championship for the second consecutive year. The girls finished second. Tigers coach Doug Butler has now won 12 state titles. “I wouldn’t have thought this (was possible). Thirteen years ago, we were horrible,” Butler said. “… If you would have asked me then would it be like this today, I would have laughed.”
Tristan Kattenberg’s time was 15:51.92, while Cacciatore came in at 16:19.43. Senior Oliver Cole was 15th in 16:40.18, eighthgrader Trevor Kattenberg was 18th in 16:48.23. Those who competed, but didn’t score included eighth-grader Michael Wilson, who was 39th in 17:11.24 and senior Coleman Sperando, who was 123rd in 18:29.49. Wollrath, who won in 18:15.49 (roughly 15 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor), changed up her tactics at the urging of Coach Butler. “Normally, I sit back and wait, and then go,” she said. “But this year, I went from the gun.” Senior McKenzie Drummer was 10th (19:11.41) for Holy Trinity, while eighthgrader Samantha Folio was 22nd (19:42.22), senior Brianna Wahy was 27th (20:20.05) and sophomore Jenna Hindsley was 41st (20:37.46). Also running for Holy Trinity, eighth-grader Natalia Walcott was 55th (20:55.91) and junior Mary Lewis was 115th (22:20.89). With six championships, and four second-place finishes in both the boys and girls divisions over the past 11 years, the Tigers are easily one of the premier programs in all of Brevard County. “That’s our goal every year, to be in the top two and compete for a title,” Butler said. Freshman Ryan Miller was 35th, senior Jerad Yohn was 38th, sophomore Ricky Cupoli was 43rd and junior Justin Sherrod was 55th. For the girls, senior Kat Castro was 23rd, junior Suzanne Henderson was 30th, senior Kelsey Dolan was 44th, senior McKenzie Estes was 49th, junior Jessica Manifold was 57th, sophomore Jessa Celestini was 63rd and junior Angela Altzner was 64th. HOLY TRINITY FOOTBALL The Tigers lost a heartbreaker to MCC and failed to qualify for the playoffs despite finishing 7-3 … Freshman running back Josh Harden had a solid year, finishing seventh in the county with 816 yards (with four TDs) during the regular season … Senior wide receiver Marques Burgman had 16 receptions for 210 yards … Senior quarterback Jonny Gomez threw for 543 yards and four TDs … Senior Ryan Collins had 13 sacks and 26 pancake blocks. VIERA HIGH FOOTBALL The Hawks may have won only one game this season, but it was a historic one. Viera’s 24-14 victory over Martin County was the team’s first-ever district win. Jalen Jackson scored on a 3-yard run and quarterback Cody Dentmon hit Marquis McClain for an 8-yard TD pass to lead the Hawks. The win actually put Viera into a three-way tie for second place in the district, but Martin County won a playoff to advance to the postseason.
HOLY TRINITY GOLF Kerry Sweeney capped off a strong season for the Tigers by tying for 24th at the Class 1A state golf tournament at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howie-in-the-Hills. Sweeney shot 84 in windy conditions on the first day, but came back with 76 on the second day for a total of 160 … A week earlier, Sweeney won the Class 1A, Region 4 individual title with a birdie on his first playoff hole.
VIERA GOLF While both the boys and girls teams were able to continue their dominance in their districts — each won its fifth consecutive district title — neither team was able to get back to the state championship. Viera’s boys hosted the regional on their home course at Duran, but were unable to take advantage. The girls, meanwhile, played their regional at Suntree. Junior Samantha Dahl had the lowest score of Brevard County players in the event with 88. HOLY TRINITY VOLLEYBALL The Tigers saw their season come to an end in the first round of the regional playoffs with a 3-0 loss to First Academy of Orlando … Senior Izzy Carmona had a team-high 208 kills, while another senior, Savannah Hicks, was next with 175. Hicks also led the team with 34 aces (Jenny Ryan was next with 30) … Freshman Tristin Kott led the team with 70 blocks … Ryan had a team-high 263 digs for Holy Trinity. VIERA VOLLEYBALL A loss to Winter Springs in the first round of the regionals ended the season for the Hawks … Senior Christine Moore led Viera with 262 kills, followed by senior Sydney Coman with 162 … Moore also led the team with 38 aces, followed by senior Shelby Jelinek, who had 36 aces and a whopping team-high 473 digs … Sophomore Marisol Murray was third with 35 aces and senior Jessica Augustine had 39 blocks to lead the Hawks. Holy Trinity braces for postseason run
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
Senior Dylon Collins is back for his third season as the Tigers’ starting goalkeeper. Holy Trinity has a young team, but is hoping to get back to the regional finals. By Carl Kotala
The Holy Trinity boys soccer team may have lost nine players from last year’s team that reached the regional finals, but that doesn’t mean this is a rebuilding year for the Tigers. “I wouldn’t say that,” coach James Phillips said. “I’ll be disappointed if we don’t go as far as we did last year. I always want to improve.” To do that, the Tigers will need some big-time
production from their seniors, not to mention an impressive freshmen class. Holy Trinity had six freshmen starting in an early-season district loss to rival Melbourne Central Catholic. After that game, Phillips told his team it was time to go back to the basics in order to build the Tigers up for the postseason. “Right now, it’s not about winning games, it’s about getting the basics down,“ Phillips said. “Later on, as the important end of the
season comes around, we can always fall back on our fundamentals, if need be.” Leading the way for this year’s Holy Trinity team will be Andrew Baez, a senior central defender, who is in his fourth year on varsity. Another senior, Dylon Collins, is back for his third season as the Tigers’ goalkeeper. Junior Evan Enders will be Holy Trinity’s main scoring threat, while another junior, Jake Bacon, will secure the midfield. Phillips said the Tigers have 12 to 15 freshmen who are “fantastic soccer players.” Some will be on the JV team this season, others will be getting their experience on the varsity where the seniors will take them under their wing. “A lot of them are very skilled, like Luca Campanini and Mikey Lynch,” senior forward Joe Torkleson said. Collins, who went straight from football to the soccer pitch, agreed getting back to basics is the right approach to help the Tigers finish strong. “You’ve got to start with your fundamentals, because it’s a whole new team, a whole new atmosphere out here,” Collins said. “We still have kids (coming in after finishing their fall sports) … So we’re still getting used to each other. When you go back to fundamentals, you build your team up.” VV

HOLY TRINITY GIRLS SOCCER A district matchup with rival Melbourne Central Catholic resulted in a 1-1 tie. Emily Morgan scored the only goal and goalkeeper Morgan Walker had an impressive 12 saves for Holy Trinity. Prior to that game, Holy Trinity beat Master’s Academy 7-0 as Morgan had five goals and an assist. Summer Rydson and Kate Elstun also scored. Kaleigh Leeney and Elstun each had two assists. Summer Rydson and Meg Rydson also added an assist.
VIERA GIRLS SOCCER The Hawks were off to a strong start under first-year coach Courtney Baines-Lundy. Viera was 6-1-1, its only loss coming against rival Melbourne. The Hawks would bounce back two days later with a 4-0 shutout victory over Titusville. In that game, Viera got goals from Nicki Fisher, Tori Clark, Kassidy Mills and Casey Estep. Goalkeeper Summer Conneen needed to make only two saves to help Viera secure the victory. Clark, Mills and Hope Leonard all had assists.
VIERA SWIMMING Kayleigh Jensen’s impressive diving career included four consecutive regional and district diving championships, and a seventh-place finish in this year’s Class 3A state meet. That’s quite an accomplishment … Senior Kyle Post, a former football player who went out for diving last season, finished second at regionals and was 19th overall at state … Another senior, Heather Pituch, was third at regionals in the 100 back and finished 21st at state. Congratulations to all for a great season. VV

Sweet 16 for the Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival By MARY BROTHERTON
The first Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival took place in 1997 after a group of community members were brought together by Laurilee Thompson, who wanted to show that promoting natural areas, along with birding and wildlife education, could co-exist with NASA technology and provide an economic impact on Brevard County. Neta Harris of The Brevard Nature Alliance reported that 200 people attended the inaugural event. “At the 2010 Festival, Governor (Charlie) Crist issued a proclamation recognizing the festival as the largest in the state and United States and congratulating us on the festival for our growth over the years,” she said After the November 2005 Festival, organizers changed the six-day, sunrise to sunset event to January, beginning in 2007. More than 5,000 participants attended last year, with more than 1,200 registering for specific events. The Brevard Nature Alliance, Titusville Area and Cocoa Beach Area chambers of commerce, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Canaveral National Seashore, Indian River Audubon Society, City of Titusville, Space Coast Office of Tourism, NASA Contractors and VISIT FLORIDA work with continuing sponsors and volunteers to provide a unique atmosphere at each annual Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival. During the past 15 years, the festival has presented a safe, memorable and fun event that is educational and environmentally-minded. It is filled with opportunities for conservation experiences; space, nature and wildlife enjoyment and birding appreciation. The festival, which is recognized across the globe as a travel destination for premier birding opportunities and outdoor adventures, connects Brevard Countys natural resources to quality of life, excellence in environmental education, high technology and a rich cultural heritage. Festival activities include: * Environmental and wildlife programs at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Canaveral National Seashore and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station * Educational classroom presentations and workshops * Keynote presentations by renowned academics, photographers and practitioners with field trips to sites throughout Brevard County * Cultural heritage presentations of historically significant aspects of Florida and Brevard County with trips to cultural/historic sites and Indian middens * Childrens activities * Water adventures * Silent auction * Exhibits by artists, crafts-persons, and businesses specializing in nature and wildlife, birding and naturebased tourism * An art competition presented by the Titusville Art League * Social gatherings to encourage interaction with speakers, trip leaders and attendees. The Brevard Nature Alliance will present the sixth annual Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival during Jan. 23 through 28. For more information, visit spacecoastbirdingandwildlifefestival.org.

Campfire night sparks love of reading By Linda Wiggins

If a teaspoon of sugar makes the medicine go down, s’mores should work even better. Quest Elementary School media coordinator Lori Kessell thought so, and added spooky stories and a campfire to make learning to read irresistibly fun for kindergarteners, on Oct. 24. “We are fostering the love of reading and making that home-to-school connection, Kessell said. The parents were taught the importance of reading to their children at home, backed up by massive research on how it helps children learn to read early and well, paving the way to learn all other subjects. About 100 students and their parents took part in the voluntary evening program, rotating through stations in small groups. For some, the first stop was the library to learn to check out books. They went on to play games on computers, not realizing that they were practicing reading skills electronically. They then rotated to the cafeteria to make s’mores. No campfire here. The graham crackers and chocolate squares were mashed together with marshmallow whip. The “funnest” part, according to Hoyden Nelson, was sitting around in the dark with a flashlight while a parent or volunteer read to his small group, also by flashlight. A campfire was displayed safely via projector on the screen. “We figured 5-year-olds and a real fire wouldn’t mix well,” said school spokeswoman Shauna Sollberger. For more information on this and other special programs, call the Quest office at 321-242-1411. VV

Fifth-grade students at Ralph Williams Elementary School voted in a mock presidential election while learning about their rights as U.S. citizens.
Voting is a responsibility as well as a right Fifth graders at Ralph Williams Elementary School learned all about their rights and responsibilities as U.S. citizens during the past month, culminating in a mock election. Voting stations were brought in by the Brevard County Office of the Supervisor of Elections. Volunteer Barbara Helm Peters taught from the Justice Teaching curriculum, posing to the students which five rights they would take if they had to leave the rest. She also showed how each person’s rights are interrelated with those of others. “They really came away with a better understanding of the way our government works and what their rights and responsibilities are,” said Williams teacher Jennifer Shytle. The leader of the free world if it were up to the students who voted?: Mitt Romney by seven votes. Group Guitar Classes Call For Details!

Nurturing new talent reaps young authors By Linda Wiggins
Macy Urso is what you call a card. A trip. A hundred years of living in a 7-year-old body. At least, that’s what her second-grade teacher, writing guru Myla Eckert, thinks.
“She’s the kind of little girl that makes you want to ask her parents where they got her. She sings, she dances, she’ll act out a skit. Something so wise and funny will come out of her that will just split you down the sides,” said Eckert, Young

Authors coordinator for Manatee Elementary School. Macy was the winning author of all Manatee second graders, going on to a special Young Authors program at the school district offices on Nov. 15. Paid for by global book publishing giant Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, one of the goals is to nurture new talent. Macy won for her fiction book, “Tabitha’s Trip,” but her entry for next year in the nonfiction genre is an even more sure-fire hit, “My Heart Surgery.” According to her mom, Macy has been down but refuses to be out. “She’s a fighter,” Allison Urso said. “We’re thankful to have her with us. With her writing talent, her gift can reach out to touch so many others.” Macmillan provided gift books and flew in an author to speak to the winners from their schools who displayed both a love of writing and enthusiasm for being published. Through their questions and answers, the chosen students proved as exceptional a find as Macy in their intelligence and imagination, according to fiction and nonfiction author Jennifer Swanson, who has dozens of children’s books to her credit. “Fish as superheroes, who you would put in a rocket to the moon, they are full of

books are published and how to submit a book to be published. “They have given me tons of inspiration and ideas for more books,” Swanson said. “That’s what happens when authors get together.” VV

Viera Charter School is set to open in the fall. The kindergarten through eighth grade school will give parents an option other than having to send their middle school children out of Viera and Suntree to attend grades seven and eight. “This is exciting. The delay in the construction of Viera Middle School due to the economic downturn has been a frustration for Viera residents,” said Brevard County School Board Member Karen Henderson, whose District 4 covers Viera, Suntree, south Rockledge and parts of Melbourne. Students typically go from Viera and Suntree elementary schools
to Johnson or Kennedy middle schools, and then return to the community to attend Viera High School for grades nine through 12. Also a plus is that the school will focus on science, technology, engineering and math, according to a Viera Charter School board member. “This is something we need to prepare our youngsters to compete in the high tech industry,” said Robert Jordan, former Brevard County School Board member, “and prepared youngsters are what the Space Coast needs to compete.” Jordan entered the private space industry as a contractor when his job at Kennedy Space Center ended along with the
space shuttle program. When completed in July, the 40,334 square-foot, two-story facility will initially serve 650 K through 8 students in 33 classrooms and can be expanded. It will be located at 6206 Breslay Drive in Viera, west of Space Coast Stadium. The school is a project of Charter School Associates. Mike Strader is the school administrator and project partner, and Joe Rauenhorst is the developer. Charter schools are operated privately, with the Brevard County School District contributing funding to serve students. For more information, call 321-541-1434. VV

The journey of a shoebox: Operation Christmas Child, a global effort by air or ship. Once they reach their destination, they are delivered to villages or cities by trucks, carts and even animals are used in the most remote areas. According to the Operation Christmas Child website, once a shoebox is in the hands of a child it’s a lively, fun event. Wherever appropriate, children are offered a copy of “The Greatest Gift of All booklet
in their own language by local churches and ministry partners. The organization is hoping this year to reach its goal of 100 million boxes. “Each box tells a child that someone on the other side of the world cares about them, said Prussel. “Each box is an individual gift to a child. To participate in Operation Christmas Child in 2013, contact the Church at Viera at 321-259-3454. Thousands of shoeboxes filled with school supplies, toys, books, candy and other goodies were packed into a semi-trailer on Nov. 18 in the parking lot of the Church at Viera by a small army of church members serving as coordinators for Operation Christmas Child. The boxes are now on their way from Brevard County to Atlanta, Ga., to be distributed around the world to needy children for the holiday season. “The church serves as the collection center for Operation Christmas Child for all of Brevard County and half of Indian River County, said Joe Prussel, overseer of the project which took place Nov. 12 to 19. “We receive around 15,000 shoeboxes. Churches, scouting groups, local restaurants, schools and youth groups contribute. It’s great to get the kids involved. They love to buy and help pack for other kids, Prussel said. Dr. Julio Vallette to speak at Signature Chefs in Viera By Jeff Navin
Dr. Julio Vallette considers the March of Dimes to be his partner in both his office and in the delivery room as a baby is taking its first breath. Vallette will speak at the March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction, which will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5 at the Holiday Inn in Viera. Many of Brevard County’s best chefs will provide food for the event. Guests also will have an opportunity to bid on several items during an auction. “We deal with the March of Dimes mission every day,’’ said Vallette, who is a pediatrician in Melbourne. “We are one and the same. We need to have a coordinated effort countywide to make a goal to organize ourselves under the March of Dimes mission and have more efficient outcomes in the deliver of babies after 39 weeks and to educate mom’s about prenatal care. Many have never visited a doctor.’’ The mission of the March of Dimes is to help mothers have full-term pregnancies and research the problems that threaten the health of babies. “A surprising misconception is that the March of Dimes is all about genetic and prenatal testing to have quote unquote perfect babies,’’ the 52-yearold Vallette said. “We want to prepare Mom for the postdelivery when she leaves the hospital. Too many want to send the mom and the newborn on their merry way without a lot of information.’’ Too often, it’s easy for people to forget about the March of Dimes. Until, the annual banquet approaches. “The March of Dimes has a critical message,’’ said Vallette, who was born in Chile and moved to the United States with his family when he was 4 years old. “I want to talk about what it has been doing through history and remind people what it is and to understand how it impacts us on a regular basis. This touches healthy babies every time education comes up with a cure. The March of Dimes is behind these efforts.’’ Many mothers delay having children to pursue or continue a career. “Population and demographic changes during the past 20, 30 years have changed the birth rate,’’ Vallette said. “Many

mothers are older and the body doesn’t acclimate to the pregnancy. We’re seeing gestational diabetes and hypertension with the skewing of the delivery age. Some of the older moms haven’t planned the pregnancy.’’ Drug use is arguably the saddest problem pediatricians see on a daily basis with the mothers to be. “It’s a terrible story when the newborn has to stay here two months to detoxify,’’ said Vallette, who received his bachelor’s degree and his medical degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia. “That’s a terrible side effect of what goes on in the real world. It’s not a phenomenon of Brevard County — it’s a national trend.’’ Establishing national pharmaceutical data bases has helped to slow down the problem. “It affects babies of all walks of life,’’ Vallette said. “The babies can become addicted to opiates such as oxycodone, methadone or Xanax. It’s not easy when you don’t know what (the mother) has been taking.’’
Consultations with a pediatrician about diet are mandatory, but too often ignored. “The most important vitamin to take is folic acid,’’ Vallette said. “That’s one the March of Dimes recommends to take. A folic acid deficiency is what leads to spinal bifida and all the problems with the development of the central nervous system.’’ Planning a pregnancy might be the best way to guarantee having a healthy baby. “It’s not just about becoming pregnant but when a woman becomes pregnant,’’ Vallette said. “At that point, a healthy lifestyle is so critical when the embryo is being formed. It’s like building the foundation for a house in a swampland. It won’t do as well.’’ Vallette’s parents, Julio and Gloria, made the difficult decision in the early 1960s to leave Chile to live in the United States. The family eventually settled in St. Louis. “My father recognized the political change when he was the president of the student government at the Universidad de Chile,’’ Vallette said. “He wanted opportunities for us that he didn’t think we would get in Chile.’’ VV

Two trees stand near the doors to enter St. John the Evangelist in Viera. A quick look tells an observer they’re not ordinary Christmas trees. But, they might be just as special. The Giving Trees are filled with tags to denote children or families in need. There also are tags for poor families in Peru, who have been adopted by the Holy Cross priests both at St. John the Evangelist and at other parishes around the country. Parishioners take tags and donate gifts which are listed on the tags. Later in December, those gifts are distributed to those in need. “A good share (of the tags) will be gone by the weekend,’’ the Rev. Brad Beaupré of St. John the Evangelist said. “We give out at least 400 of these. By two weekends, those will be gone. I love the concept. Little kids will stop and look up at the trees. I’ll hear the parents say, ‘Look, here’s one you can buy something for.’ As they get older, they’ll take one (a tag) for themselves. Many instances, it will be a family affair. One family will do something for another family.’’ Catholicism classes for children can teach the faith, but simple acts help reinforce lessons for life. “I’ll see the parents of a 7 year old say, ‘You get lots of things; this 7 year old doesn’t get very much.’ This is something tangible that

parents can talk to their kids about, and they can actually see how it’s helping the kids,’’ Beaupré said. Children aren’t the only demographic group which needs a little help. “This isn’t just for little tots,’’ Beaupré said. “We have tags for seniors and people who are elderly. A lot of people might not know that, but we want to cover the bases with all different age groups.’’ St. John and many other churches also help Brevard Family Partnership collect new and unwrapped toys for more than 2,000 foster,
adopted and at-risk children before Christmas. The group is working with the Brevard Interfaith Coalition, Devereux, the Children’s Home Society, Brevard Cares, Crosswinds Youth Services and Intervention Services to collect and distribute gifts. “There are a lot more children in care than in years past,’’ said Stephanie Strodtman of the Brevard Family Partnership. We’re also seeing a lot more independent living programs. We’d rather work on preventive programs than have things happen.’’ Crosswinds has young adults as old as 23. “It can be the hardest demographic group to find gifts more,’’ Strodtman said. “Some of them just want bus tickets.’’ Carrie Thomas of the Brevard Interfaith Coalition says the older children often get left out. “People think that if they don’t believe in Santa they don’t need gifts,’’ Thomas said. “We’ve always been low on gifts for teens. There’s a confidential wish list and we try to get them at least one of the three wishes. My message is that anything you can do helps — no matter how small. Some of these children have very little, and the foster parents already provide a lot.’’ Anyone who would like to help Strodtman collect and distribute the gifts can call her at 321-752-4650, ext. 3047. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge celebrates 50 years
We are moving on November 23rd to: 1240 US 1, #6 Rockledge, FL 32955
By MARY BROTHERTON
In 1963, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (MINWR) was established. More than 140,000 acres provide protection, restoration and management for diverse habitats and ecosystems. For the past 50 years, MINWR has maintained a working relationship with Kennedy Space Center by providing habitat management and wildfire protection in the buffer zones around NASA’s space flight facilities. Portions of the Indian River Lagoon, a United States Environmental Protection Agencydesignated estuary of national significance, adjoined by the Canaveral National Seashore adds 24 miles of barrier island and Atlantic coastline. Additionally, MINWR manages two satellite refuges, the 6,000-acre St. Johns NWR west of Titusville and the 31,000acre Lake Woodruff NWR near De Leon Springs. A unique biological reservoir and sanctuary, MINWR offers seven distinct types of habitat for 1,045 plants 340 birds; 117 fish; 65 reptiles and amphibians; and 31 mammals, with 93 of these listed as species of concern by state or federal organizations. In 2001, MINWR was designated a globally important bird area. Wildlife isn’t the only unique feature of MINWR. More than 100 archeological sites have been recorded in All major credit cards accepted

Nearly one million people from across the world visit MINWR annually. They visit to relax in a natural setting or to observe, paint or photograph wildlife. Some come for boating, hiking or fishing. Candice Stevenson has been MINWR operations specialist for three years. She has been involved in all aspects of managing the vast refuge. “My most memorable event was helping out with the cold-stunned sea turtles in January 2010,” she said. “It was an unusually cold winter and the sea turtles may have not survived without intervention from us and several other partners. We had about 2,000 sea turtles come through our maintenance facility within two weeks. Data was collected on each turtle and they were sent to rehab facilities until the water was warm enough to release them.” Stevenson and others at MINWR are working with the Merritt Island Wildlife Association (MIWA), a nonprofit support organization, to plan events for the 50th Anniversary celebration to be held in November 2013. MIWA President Dan Click said the theme is “Space for Wildlife” and preliminary plans are in place for a lecture series, presentations and a 50th anniversary Festival, complete with birthday cake. “Membership as of July is 1,384, of which 768 are registered as senior, 173 Family, 162 Life, and 80 Individual, with the balance distributed among corporate, student, and complimentary memberships,” Click said. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge will offer two presentations during the 16th annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in January 2013. One presentation will focus on the land-use history of MINWR, and the other will tell the story of the now extinct Dusky Seaside Sparrow. “We plan to tell our story through historical presentations, tours, hayrides and demonstrations,” Stevenson said. “Our big festival will take place on Nov. 9, 2013 at MINWR’s Visitor Center. We want to show everything we do now to conserve wildlife and habitats and educate the public. We will have wildlife exhibitors, tours, demonstrations and fun games and activities for kids.” For more information, call 321-861-2377. VV

New sheriff says parents need to monitor high-tech Christmas gifts By Jeff Navin
Christmas is a busy time of year in the household of Wayne and Susan Ivey. With four children ranging in age from 12 to 26 years old, the Brevard County Sheriff-elect and his wife have kept up with nationwide trends for quite some time. Ivey couldn’t help but laugh a little when he saw a miniature car that looked like a combination of an old Matchbook or Hot Wheels car in a conference room next to a box of candy canes ready to be eaten during a future party. “Do you remember that?,’’ the 50-year-old Ivey said as he looked at the car. “It used to be a lot easier.’’ Improved technology has changed the way parents shop for Christmas gifts for their children. A bicycle, basketball, doll or surfboard always will be a winner under the Christmas tree. But, don’t forget the smartphone, digital reader, digital projector or charging pad. It also helps to know how to use those new gadgets. Or, at least monitor them. “Anything like that can be dangerous,’’ said Ivey, who will be sworn in as sheriff by outgoing Sheriff Jack Parker at 11:59 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7 to begin his term at midnight, Jan. 8 during a party at Brevard Community College’s Cocoa campus. “If it’s an iPad, cell phone or a computer at the house, a child could get on it. If it’s not monitored, they could be contacted by sex offenders or any other type of individual looking to do them harm.’’ At the playground, parents watch their young children and are quick to see adults who haven’t been there before. “The playground and park is now in our living room,’’ Ivey said. “There are online games that target where our kids go, and this can cross the globe. They can say, ‘I won’t talk to anyone I’m not supposed to. They’re friends of mine.’ But those friends might be a friend of a friend, and they’re not the person you believe them to be.’’ The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office will send parents a free cyber safety video with investigative software. Call the office at 321-264-5201 or send an email to admin@bcso.us to receive the video. “When the kids are connecting to the internet, help set up their passwords for them,’’ Ivey said. “Be aware of what apps they
VIERA VOICE Jeff Navin
Wayne Ivey, who won November’s election to choose a new sheriff in Brevard County, says high-tech Christmas gifts for children should be monitored by parents. are downloading. Monitor what they are doing on the computer.’’ Some youthful mistakes won’t disappear. “You have to watch out for sent texts, sexting and child porn,’’ Ivey said. “We’ve been dealing with child porn for decades and the enhanced technology has made it more of a problem.’’ Sending nude photos over a computer or cell phone never is a good idea, even if love has been promised to last forever. Those intimate photos could be shared or used to blackmail the underage child. “We’re seeing cyber bullying through texting or Facebook posts,’’ Ivey said. “It can impact or change a family’s life. People should not be loose with what they say or write. They need to be certain with who they are communicating with.’’ Children might know how to navigate the family computer better than their parents, but they still are kids at heart. “The younger generation is the most savvy on all the (new technology), but I equate it to when they first came out with the protective tops for pills and the adults couldn’t open the containers,’’ Ivey said. “The kids use (the computers) every day. They see all the updates. None of us ever dreamed of Skype, smartphones or Facebook. It’s a constant and fast-paced medium that connects us to the world and often to the most evil people out there who will harm our children.’’ Ivey, however, isn’t ready to bring back Encyclopedia Brittanica and the rotary phone. “All great things are gleaned from this technology,’’ he said. “It enhances academia; it’s not a bad thing. We just can’t become complacent about the
Internet.’’ There also is a program to monitor young drivers, who receive their first set of wheels as a Christmas gift. “Parents can register the car and, if it’s stopped for speeding or other driving concerns, the parents will be contacted at the number that is given,’’ Ivey said. “They’ll know through the Stop program whatever the vehicle has been involved in and whether the driver has obeyed every law.’’ Parents also can use the Internet to research whether there have been recalls for toys they might buy their children for Christmas. Keeping all the receipts from a long day of shopping might save a lot of time and money. Credit card fraud is a problem during the holidays. “You’re exposed to ID theft if you go to five different stores at the mall and use the same credit card,’’ Ivey said. “Every time you go in person, they could be skimming and cloning your card. It could happen when you’re making an online reservation on the Internet. You need to know who you give your information to. One more beer than usual at a Christmas party or some rum in the holiday eggnog might make the drive home a little more difficult. “We ask everyone if they’re having a drink to be mindful that, in just one second, they can take someone’s life,’’ Ivey said. “There are so many organizations that offer free rides this time of year. If you have a designated driver, everyone can have a good time and no one gets hurt.’’ Ivey, who was a Florida Department of Law

Family’s love for husband, father set in stone
Feed a Family Foundation continues to satisfy holiday appetites
VIERA VOICE Photo Sharon Kendust, right, dedicates the new prayer wall, background, at Suntree United Methodist Church to the memory of her late husband, Rick, pictured with her son, Will, and co-senior pastors John and Terri Hill on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012. By Linda Wiggins
Rick Kendust designed so many structures across Suntree and Viera that each one is like a mosaic of his life. His widow, Sharon Kendust, brought that mosaic to life with a replica of the Jerusalem Wailing Wall, built at their beloved Suntree United Methodist Church on the church’s 25th anniversary. “We wanted to thank everyone who made him a success and give back to the community,” said Kendust, who with her son, Will, helped dedicate the wall at a standing-room-only ceremony on Nov. 4. The wall is made of five tons of authentic Jerusalem stone on the “west wall” of the church, imported by Holy Land Stone. The project also celebrates the church’s mission that has flashed from its stateof-the-art electronic lightedletter sign along its 7400 N. Wickham Rd. frontage: Love God, love others, and love our neighbors in extraordinary ways. The prayer wall is open to the community and part of a planned prayer garden. The wall reflects the congregation’s love of the Holy Land. “We love our neighbors in Israel as well as next door. We share a kindred faith,” Hill said. “We have created this project out of our love for all our neighbors, that this prayer wall may belong to the entire community, of all faiths.” Like the Jerusalem wall, people who make the pilgrimage write their prayers on paper and wedge it between the bricks in the wall, so that others may come along to read and pray the prayer, to amplify the

results. In addition to this occurring locally, the notes will later be sent to Israel to be inserted into the actual Wailing Wall. “We have so many members of our church and area congregations who make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem. I am sure it will not be long before they come across prayers written by their actual neighbors in Brevard,” Hill said. The warm-toned stone is spot-burnished to create the look of thousands of years’ age. Air plants dot the surface, with all the effects creating an appearance unlike anything on the Space Coast and its mere hundreds of years of recent civilization. To the south, there is a remembrance garden under a tall cross, wending its way to a placid lake. Members of the community already use this area to scatter the ashes of loved ones so they may have a place to visit and remember them. VV

Feed a Family Foundation, Inc., raised more than $17,000 through an auction of donated items in early November to provide 300 dinners/boxes with enough food to feed nearly 2,400 hungry adults and children this holiday season. The boxes were distributed through Publix at Viera Boulevard and Stadium Parkway Nov. 20 and 21 to various Brevard County schools, churches and civic organizations, including Candlelighters, Salvation Army, Manatee and Kennedy elementary schools to name a few. Larry Mathis, facilities manager and Gloria Black, guidance counselor, both from Manatee Elementary School made the pickup at Publix for their organization. The school, and each organization, then determines through a “needs” process who will get the dinners from their allotment. The tobacco hornworm is common in the southern United States. This is a caterpillar, or larva, which frequently feeds on tobacco and tomato plants. It is distinguishable by its seven diagonal white lines and a red horn in the rear. (Similar in biology and appearance is the tomato hornworm with V-shaped markings and a black horn.) This pest sometimes devastates tomato plants.
Initially, the Carolina sphinx moth, the adult stage of this hornworm, lays her eggs mostly on the underside of the leaves of the host plant. It is commonly named hummingbird moth since it hovers over blossoms. After hatching, the hornworm undergoes five developmental stages (instars) which span about 20 days. It reaches 3 to 4 inches in length and has a voracious appetite;
defoliation of a plant is swift. With a heavy population of larvae, the feeding continues to the tomatoes and causes gouges. Natural methods of control are effective. Generally, when handpicking, detecting the hornworm is challenging because it blends with the green vegetation (see photo). Since it avoids the heat of direct sunlight, search for it when it emerges at sunset. Usually, defoliation starts
at the top of the plant, and large, black droppings (frass) collect under affected areas. To facilitate exposure, spray the foliage with water to agitate the larva; drop it in soapy water. Another control procedure is to till the soil to expose and kill the pupa. Also beneficial is the small braconid wasp, a parasite which kills the hornworm. Apply organic insecticides on the hornworm if necessary. VV

Viera Rabbi focuses on Hanukkah traditions By Angela Smith
With December now here, Christmas decorations have gone up and those traditional carols have begun blaring through the loud speakers in stores everywhere. Yet as the remaining season approaches, it is important to recognize that other holidays are celebrated too, such as Hanukkah. For Rabbi Patricia Hickman of the Temple Israel of Brevard in Viera, the December holiday for her is a moment to enjoy the simple things in life while coinciding with her religion. “It’s definitely a time for family,” said Rabbi Hickman, who is celebrating her first Hanukkah as a full Rabbi, rather than a traditional spiritual leader (cantor) at the temple. “It’s a holiday we can celebrate together as a congregation, but a lot of it is done at home too. There’s good food and fun.” Hanukkah, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem in the second century B.C. In Hebrew, Hanukkah means dedication and describes how the Maccabees purified a ransacked temple in Jerusalem and found only a little pure oil, enough to light the temple menorah for a single day when eight days were needed. A miracle occurred and this oil lasted for the eight days, becoming known as the Hanukkah miracle. Every year the tradition starts on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev, usually falling sometime between late November and late December — this year, falling on Dec. 8. For Rabbi Hickman and her congregation of about 207 families, they will begin their annual “menorahthon” Dec. 14, where participating members bring in their own menorahs to light inside the temple. Meeting each night to not only enjoy their religion, but company as well eating latkes (potato pancakes), playing games, like the spinning of the dreidel, a four-sided top with Hebrew letters written on each side. “It’s a nice tradition,” Rabbi Hickman said. “Everyone seems to have a good time. The children really enjoy it.” While it is a holiday for Rabbi Hickman and her

congregation to rejoice and come together, it’s not as big of a holiday as most think, she says. “Hanukkah is not the most important holiday of our holidays,” Rabbi Hickman said. “It’s actually a minor festival, but in this country in particular because of the big emphasis of Christmas and because it occurs in December around Christmas, it is made out to be.” Still, despite aisles and aisles of Christmas decor, wrapping paper and jingles in the airwaves, the

new rabbi is hopeful for another blessed year to enjoy with her family and congregation. “Everything seems heightened for me now,” she said. “I seem more connected than ever before to the tradition, to my ancestors, to the chain of tradition; so everything does seem extra special.” Friends of the community of any religion are welcome to attend Temple services. Bank on bidding process to bolster capital projects Associations of all types will occasionally have a capital project. It may be a maintenance repair or restoration or a completely new capital project. The concentration of this column will be on the planning of the project and the recommended steps to carry it out. It is assumed that the financing of the project will be in place through reserve funding, special assessment or a loan. In addition, the definition of “capital projectâ€? will vary from one association to another. Once the endeavor has been identified, the manager or board may want to consider a consultant or engineer, who has experience specific to the project to create and carry out the plan. Bid specifications will be drawn and dispersed to potential vendors. The specifications are distributed as a request for proposals (RFP), with a reasonable deadline date, assuring that all contractors are bidding on the same thing. Associations usually require three bids for comparison purposes. The lowest bid does not mean it is the best choice. Your consultant or engineer should investigate each bidder, looking for proper licenses required along with adequate liability and workers compensation insurance. The bidders’ references should be checked and a physical inspection of previous work is preferred, if possible. Once a contract is ready to be awarded, your association attorney should either review or draft the contract. Be sure the attorney
