Ford’s 2009 autobiography “Still Dancing” has garnered national media attention, first on Animal Planet’s “A Pet Story” and later a segment on the “Today” show and articles in Cosmopolitan and Guideposts.

After being bullied in high school because of her illness, Gabrielle “Gabe” Ford of Viera, now a national anti-bullying spokesperson, had all but given up, for nearly four years shutting herself in and the world out. “I just thought everybody would treat me like those kids in school did. I cut myself off from people really,” she said. That was before she got a long-eared coonhound name Izzy as a reward for starting to get out of her shell. “The only one I even wanted around me all the time was my dog. I love animals so much because they are always there. She didn’t care what I looked like or that I couldn’t do things anymore,’’ she said. Ford, who moved to Viera from Michigan in March, suffers from a rare genetic neuromuscular disease called Friedreich’s Ataxia. “Ataxia means without coordination. My nerves don’t communicate that well with my muscles, my coordination is poor and it’s progressive. I was born with it. I was a dancer, just like most kids. When I was 12, I became symptomatic. I walked wobbly and I couldn’t stand still,’’ she said. Ironically, Izzy later would come down with a similar condition,

Superheroes raise money to give abused children a “sense of normalcy.” By Linda Wiggins

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Alexander Hamilton were not superheroes, but the money they appear on is, lessening the horror for children plucked from their homes for their safety, sometimes in the middle of the night, and then trotted through the courts

system. The second annual Guardian Ad Litem Superhero Run will take off at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, where adults, children and families can dress up as their favorite superhero and walk or run to raise awareness and money to help GALs serve children’s needs. Organizers hope to top

the $10,000 raised last year. Friends of Children of Brevard is a nonprofit auxiliary group that purchases items and services not included in the Brevard County courts’ budget to create a sense of normalcy for the abused, neglected or abandoned children. Each year, hundreds of Brevard County’s children

are removed from their homes and placed under the Dependency Court as the result of abuse, neglect or abandonment. Each child is assigned a volunteer advocate called a Guardian ad Litem (GAL). When these Guardians have a child with an unmet need, they call upon “Friends’” for help with almost anything: a bed, a bike, a pair of shoes or a school uniform. “This helps to bring a sense of normalcy to their disrupted lives,” said Patricia Williams, event coordinator and GAL spokesperson. The real superheroes are the GAL volunteers, none of whom consider themselves such, according to Williams. “They leap tall obstacles in a single bound, cut through red tape with their X-ray vision,

COMMUNITY Viera East Lady golfers make a joyful noise for charity and more

Associations cater to both needs and wants

The Singing Golfers have a lot of fun as they participate in various charity events and sing for different organizations. They are known for changing the words of their songs to reflect a lighthearted and fun songfest for their audiences. Lyrics are usually changed to golf “lingo” such as “We Wish you a Merry Christmas” words changed to “We Wish you would take some lessons, we wish you would take some lessons, we wish you would take some lessons or quit playing golf!” and so forth. The creativity put forth is amazing and they all have a lot of fun in composing the various songs. Formally known as the Viera East 9-hole Ladies Golf Association, the group recently held its Christmas luncheon at the Black Tulip restaurant in Cocoa Village, which included 11 of the 13 Singing Golfers associated with their club at Viera East Country Club. Instead of exchanging gifts, they collected money totaling $175 to donate to the Autumn House assisted living in Viera. Sue Buttner has a musical background and she formed the Singing Golfers after the March invitational golf event. They needed entertainment organized and she came up with the idea for the lady golfers. Of course, they had to audition to become part of the group because the idea was to make a “joyful” noise, which means the singers needed to be able to do more than just carry a tune. Upcoming performances will be in March, 2013 when they will perform at the closing luncheon after the 9-hole leaguers play at the club. Safety concerns trigger senior gun boom

Not much was taken. Pat Dengate came home in time to prevent what could have been a more painful experience. Dengate’s Suntree home was robbed earlier this year. “I must have come home when they were in the process of robbing me,” she said. “There were so many other things that they didn’t take.” Dengate decided it was time to buy and learn how to shoot a gun. She’s not alone, as more seniors in Brevard County are buying guns, taking classes and filling the local shooting ranges to practice their new sport. “I just want to feel comfortable and be able to defend myself if it happens again,” said Dengate, a native of the Philadelphia suburbs who has lived in Florida for the past 26 years. “Having my brother and his wife next door to me has given me a false sense of security. The windows could be open and I’d figure if I yelled they’d be able to hear me. But they’re returning up North to be close to their grandchildren.” Rockledge resident June Wright, who commuted from her home in New Hampshire to teach in Boston during her working years, retired here and lives in a fifth-floor condo. She said she feels safe at home, but would like to pack a piece when traveling. “I just recently lost my husband,” she said as she handled different weapons at Red Dot Shooting Range in Rockledge. “If I have to drive back to New Hampshire, I really want to have a handgun in my car.” Both Dengate and Wright have taken courses at Red Dot, which is operated by Rachel and Jonathan Bonham. “I think I was the only one who had never fired a gun before,” Dengate said. The course

Dengate enrolled in was limited to women. “I think I might have been intimidated if there had been men in the class,” Dengate said. Brevard County Sheriff Jack Parker wants women and all seniors who shoot a gun to be comfortable with the weapon they own. “I’ve seen too many seniors bring in a gun given to them by their children where they can’t pull the trigger,” Parker said. “They need to go to a shooting range and try 20 or 25 different types of handguns if they don’t know what to get. Revolvers, Magnums, .45s — the ranges have all of these for rent. Try a 9mm or a .22 to see what fits in your hand. There are pros and cons, but there will be one that feels best.” Improved technology also has altered Parker’s opinions on the subject. “In the old days, I would have discouraged someone from getting a .22,” said Parker, who retires this month when Wayne Ivey is sworn in. “It wasn’t reliable and it would jam frequently. The quality of the new .22s is 10 times better than what it was.” There are other choices. “For most seniors, I’d prefer a

Intact families with children are one step closer to having a place to call home until they have a home of their own. Family Promise of Brevard announced that they are in talks with the final two of 13 churches needed to set up a housing network, where families will stay at one of the member churches. They then rotate to the next church each week until they are placed in jobs and in homes. They sleep at the churches and then are transported to a Day Center each morning, where they will seek employment and work on getting their lives on track. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We built our church with this in mind. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why we have showers in our restrooms,â&#x20AC;? said Tony Love, a member of both Suntree United Methodist Church, and the Suntree/Viera Association of Churches that come together to help those less fortunate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are delighted that through Family Promise we will finally be able to do that. Her 2009 autobiography “Still Dancing” has garnered national media attention, first on Animal Planet’s “A Pet Story” and later a segment on “The Today Show” and articles in Cosmopolitan and Guideposts. “They totally understood one another because they were so connected with diseases that caused the exact same symptoms,’’ said Ford’s mother, Rhonda Hillman. “The last few years of Izzy’s life she traveled by wagon. She had wheels and Gabe had wheels. It was such a coincidence.’’ So the bullied girl once trapped in her room is now a paid keynote and motivational speaker at conferences and

conventions. But her primary interest is her presentations to schools as an anti-bullying advocate. “When they were interviewing for Animal Planet, I told them how much it hurt me when kids made fun of me. A teacher picked up on that and asked me to come to the classroom and tell about my whole experience. That was my first time talking to anybody about that stuff. It was really difficult for me. To my surprise, all the students were receptive and gave positive feedback. That gave me confidence,’’ she said. When James Hayes was just 8 years old, he had to get a haircut at the local barbershop and wasn’t much looking forward to it. He would have rather been outside playing with his friends than sitting in an uncomfortable barber’s chair letting someone chop off his hair. However, he noticed a man in the shop with a sketchpad who seemed to be taking an interest in the haircutting procedure and was drawing as Hayes received his haircut. That artist was Norman Rockwell, who became one of the world’s most famous artists with his drawings and paintings of real-life subjects and happenings around town. The town was Arlington, Vt., and the year was 1943. Hayes had never seen the artist before and had no idea of what would become of the drawing. He did notice, however, that the artist kept tearing pages off of the

sketch pad, crumpling them, and throwing them on the floor. “I wish I’d had the foresight to grab those pieces of paper,” he laughs as he tells the story. “They’d be worth a fortune now.” The barbershop where Hayes was receiving his haircut was located in the barber’s home. Actually, it was on the front porch of the home. He remembers distinctly getting that haircut and how long it took compared to haircuts of today. Maybe the barber was keeping him hostage so that Norman Rockwell could finish his picture. Asked if he felt “famous” because of the painting, Hayes answered modestly, “Oh, no. It was no big deal!” However, he and his wife Carolyn have the picture framed and placed on the wall for anyone to see. He has told a few of his close friends about the honor of being a model for such a prestigious artist as Rockwell, but he certainly doesn’t flaunt it.

Hayes says he had contact with Norman Rockwell for quite a few years, as there were many notable artists in the New England area, including Grandma Moses. He remembers when Rockwell signed a contract with the Saturday Evening Post to paint the covers and he also painted many for Life magazine. The picture that Rockwell painted of a young Hayes and the barber was sold to a Massachusetts life insurance company as an advertising poster, as was often the case. Hayes and his wife enjoy Florida life and their Suntree home. They moved here 40 years ago and have two grown sons, one who lives near Orlando and another in Georgia. Hayes keeps young by playing golf and bowling as well as traveling with Carolyn across the globe. He says he has always wanted to paint and he may just start doing that now that he is retired. VV

Jennifer Scott, owner of Great Scott Productions video company, recently held two outdoor sales at her home to help hungry families.

Jennifer Scott was laid off from her job at the Space Center in 2011. Scrambling for a way to make ends meet and with a desire to help other people, she brainstormed with friends and family and came up with a unique concept that would give her the satisfaction of making sure the local community did not go hungry over the Christmas holidays. Armed with the philosophy that one can always give of themselves even if there is very little money available, she set out to create an outdoor sales event at her home featuring local vendors, musicians and business sponsors who donated items

The Viera High boys basketball team is coming off its best season ever â&#x20AC;&#x201D; district champs and a spot in the regional semifinals â&#x20AC;&#x201D; so naturally the approach isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t about to change, even if the roster has. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the same thing every year,â&#x20AC;? Hawks coach Josh Sykes said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to get them to buy into defense. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got young guys that have talent, but to get them to all understand the concepts that we really want to be strong with is the challenge of the early part of the year.â&#x20AC;? Viera returns three players from last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team â&#x20AC;&#x201D; senior swingman Cody Lyn and returning starters Eric DeJesus (guard) and Zack Schwarz (post). While Viera doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a lot of size up front â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Schwarz is 6-foot-3 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the Hawks have a lot of versatile players who can make things tough on opposing defenses, especially as they continue to learn to adapt to the circumstances of the game and make necessary adjustments. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(The key) is getting them used to knowing those positions, knowing how to approach whatever is necessary in each gameâ&#x20AC;Śif we need to slow it down, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll slow it down,â&#x20AC;? One night, they played the kind of team defense they want to play and were able to beat Eau Gallie. The next night, that defensive execution wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t there and they lost to Bayside. Schwarz, who knows all too well how effective the Hawks can be when their defense is tight, said itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a matter of the players getting used to being on the court together. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can see flashes where, when weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re together, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re tough to beat.â&#x20AC;? New Tigers coach stresses patience and execution By Carl Kotala

Everything about the Holy Trinity girls basketball program is new this season. New coach. New starting a five. New offense and defense. “The key for us definitely is playing together,” firstyear Tigers coach Johnny Collins said. We’re so young, we have to really have good team chemistry and be patient and execute because of the lack of experience. We have no one that’s really been there and done that.” That’s not to say, however, that Holy Trinity doesn’t have a chance to succeed. Though the Tigers have played a number of teams from higher divisions, it has helped prepare them for district play, where they were off to a 3-0 start. “We’re starting to play better as the season progresses,” junior point guard Kendall Kara said. With only one senior on the team — forward/center Munashe Chiyangana — the Tigers have a chance to form a team that can not only compete this season, but be in position to be even better next year. Kara is one of those key players, along with junior forward Joya Collins; sophomore guard McKenzie Kilborne; freshman guard Alisha Pound; eighthgrader Natalia Walcott and sophomore forward Jana Collins. “We have a lot of new, young players, but they’re working hard,” Joya Collins said. “What we lack in experience, we make up

because we work hard.” The offensive playbook has been simplified, with fewer plays than last season to make it more player friendly. The defense has also switched from a 2-3 zone to more of a 1-2-2. Not only does Collins coach his daughters, Joya and Jana, but his wife, Paula, is the Tigers’ head JV coach. In fact, he was her assistant last year.

Because he works nights, Collins can’t always be there to talk with his daughters about what went on at that night’s practice. So he does the next best thing: “Before it gets too late, I’ll call both of them individually, just to talk to them, and I’ll put on my dad hat and we’ll talk about any smoothing over (that needs to be done) and we go from there,” he said. Sure, the Viera High girls basketball team returns only two starters this year. But when those two starters are guard/forward Dee Anderson and point guard Ro Hayes — two of the best players in the county, who also happen to be juniors — well, that’s not a bad problem to have. “Those are two excellent returners, that’s for sure,” said a laughing Hawks coach Jamie Risberg. As good as Anderson and Hayes are, though, the Hawks are going to need a lot of other players around them to emerge this season if they are going to be successful. “We have a lot of talent, but we are very young,” Risberg said. Sophomore guard Kelsey Muller is the only other returning varsity player from last year’s team, which won the district title and advanced to the Class 7A regional final. Viera received some help in the form of two transfers,

junior guard Shania Brantley from the Panhandle and senior guard Morgan Best from Kansas. The Hawks also have three freshmen on the roster who will get a chance to make a significant impact — forward Daniella Hatcher, guard Alyssa Laudoto and guard Lexi Gordon. With five new players entering the mix, it will be crucial for the Hawks to not only learn their roles, but embrace them. The Hawks hope their high-pressure, fast-paced style will overcome a lack of height. Anderson is Viera’s tallest player at 5-8. “Height will be our Achilles tendon for sure,” Risberg said.

Viera’s certainly got off to a good start, opening with a 9-1 record that included a dominating performance against Bayside in which the Hawks led 38-2 after the first quarter on the way to a 7010 victory. In that game, Anderson had 24 points, with Hayes getting 17 and Hatcher adding 16. Viera also had a good opening to its district play, winning on the road at New Smyrna Beach 55-16, with a road game against its other district foe, University (Orange City), to come in mid-December. “We’ve got the talent, it’s just a matter of if we can pull it together,” Risberg said.VV

Championship that has eluded them the past three seasons. “We’re going to have to have the younger guys step up,” Gentile said. “We know we’re going to get points from (some of our top seniors).” While Waite plans to wrestle at 132, Terrell Hughes will go at 195 and Terrence will hit the mat at 182. The Hughes brothers are one of five sets of brothers on this year’s Viera team.

Other key wrestlers include senior Josh Amos, who tore his ACL as a sophomore, and then again over this past summer. Senior Ruben Darr is a senior co-captain at 138, while Ricky Veloce will wrestle at 145 and Blake Mahl will wrestle at 220 pounds. Holy Trinity style wears opponents out By Carl Kotala

The Holy Trinity boys basketball team plays a style that doesn’t sit well with most opponents. Mostly because those opponents can’t sit down. And by the second half…they need the rest. “I love it,” senior guard Gibson said. “They see us pressure and they get tired throughout the game. Most a high schools don’t play at that type of pace.” The Tigers’ full-court pressure, up-tempo style can really wear out an opponent when executed properly. The trick this season will be to get the new players on the same page. “We’re coming off a group that we’d had since seventh and eighth grade, so we’re trying to re-teach the system to a lot of new guys,” Holy Trinity coach Steve Henderson said. “Our main focus is on defense. We’ve always been a pretty good defensive team. “We try to keep teams under 40 (points) a night, then we try to use our speed and conditioning to get out and push the tempo of the game.” Holy Trinity returns five players from last year’s team,

along with five transfers and two players up from the JV team. Gibson and sophomore guard Keoni Wallington — an all-state pick as a freshman — set the pace in the backcourt. Other key players this season will be Jace Hogan, a 6-foot-6 junior transfer from Palm Bay and sophomore swingman Julian Gardner, a transfer from Bayside. Junior Zach Ullian, who played a lot of minutes at shooting guard last season, will also have a big role. “We feel like we have all the pieces,” Henderson said. “It’s just about getting better throughout the year.” The Tigers were already showing signs of improvement in mid December, but once again, it will depend on how quickly the new players are able to pick up the defense. “(It’s) pretty difficult,” Gibson said. “It can take you months to actually get used to it, because you get bad habits and you’re used to everything else. It’s a system. It takes a little while to get it, but once you get into it, you’ll know it like nothing else.” VV

As much as Waite wants to help the Hawks get that CCC title, he also has a little unfinished business for his senior season. After finishing sixth in the state as a sophomore, he was well on his way to heading back to the state meet last season when he was

sidelined by a torn oblique muscle. The senior called it “one of the most disappointing things that’s ever happened to me” and is determined to not only get back to the state meet this season, but to finish in the top three. “I’m definitely ready to go,” he said. “… I’ve been working on my shots a lot. I’m trying to get them faster. I used to always work headlocks. I’m trying to be more diverse.”VV

Unlike the traditional pageant categories such as talent, swimsuit and evening gown, Ms. Senior Florida contestants

Football-fanatic students at Manatee Elementary School are putting their Super Bowl money where their mouth is, or rather the mouths of others. They will run up the score for their favorite teams with donated cans of soup in the third annual Manatee Souper Bowl. The soup will be donated to a local church food pantry. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The rivalry is huge. These kids are very loyal to their chosen teams, as are our faculty members,â&#x20AC;? said parent volunteer Samantha Guettler, who launched the event and continues to coordinate it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is also fun to see the students check everyday to see if their team is â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;winning,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; with them and faculty getting very involved in the collection and rooting for their team to win.â&#x20AC;? By coincidence â&#x20AC;&#x201D; perhaps â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the team which has collected the most food each year has won the Super Bowl. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Super Bowl will be Feb. 3, 2013. It will be in New Orleans, La., which is the first time the championship game will be held in the city since Hurricane Katrina shredded parts of the Louisiana Superdome, home to the Saints. There are 32 NFL teams vying for the two spots in the actual Super Bowl. Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s canned food total was 1,024 cans; the first year in 2011 was 807 cans. The goal this year is a modest increase to 1,100 cans. The cans will be collected through January and right up until the Super Bowl. Students decorate posters for their favorite teams, and provide logos, jerseys and other sports memorabilia to dress up their team station and encourage participation through rivalries. Cans of food are placed at the station for that team. According to church pantry volunteers, the Souper Bowl could not come at a better time or serve a more unique need. Pantries always get low during the holidays, which is the time of greatest need, the season of eating special meals with visiting friends and family. Also, soup fills a great need in that it is a modest meal in itself. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We get a lot of positive feedback from the pantry we contribute to,â&#x20AC;? said Manatee PTO president Susan Taylor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They say it is a good way for them to help stretch the food supplied to families.â&#x20AC;? Sibling chihuahuas â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bella and Harryâ&#x20AC;? travel the world with their family and learn about different countries and customs. On Feb. 11, they will share what they learn in the entertaining live show at the King Center for the Performing Arts on the Brevard Community College Melbourne campus on North Wickham and Post roads. Entire classes from Viera, Suntree and beyond are expected to attend the 10:30 a.m. show on field trips to enhance their studies in literature, geography, theatre and music. The show targets preschool through third grade age levels. Single tickets are $11. The show brings to life popular characters in a series of six â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bella and Harryâ&#x20AC;? books that will soon grow to 10. Each book travels to different regions of the globe. The London adventure is the third book. Author Lisa Manzione grew to love travel through a parentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career with a major airline. Through the comedic and informative adventures of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bella and Harry,â&#x20AC;? Manzione hopes to stimulate childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s imaginations and foster a thirst for understanding the world in which they live. Quest brings world to students By Linda Wiggins

Quest Elementary School teacher Jennifer McMahan brings her students to the world in textbook learning, and sometimes she brings the world to them. To cap a recent unit on the Native American culture of long ago, McMahan brought a Delaware Indian dressed in full regalia to show the tools, musical instruments and toys his clan used centuries ago and still today. “It’s amazing the lengths our teachers will go to light up their children with the love of learning, and kindle their natural curiosity to discover more,” said Quest spokeswoman Shauna Sollberger. Jake George is a Rockledge author and writing correspondent focusing on his people’s trials at finding their place in the world, and on his personal trials overcoming diseases common to his ethnic

heritage and those he shares with European-descended Americans. A mix of the Delaware’s Lepane nation and “white blood,” George chronicles the ups and downs of both cultures and medical risk factors in “The Red Man in Me,” a book that includes Native American poetry, short stories and essays. George is active in the winter Pow Wow circuit in Florida and men’s traditional dance. He makes the majority of his own regalia and is a maker and player of Native American flutes. George has made it his mission to visit other countries through his life and interact with the native peoples domestically and abroad, swapping knowledge of culture and heritage so as to keep both alive. As he did with Quest students, George travels the country bringing awareness of the Native American culture to young and old alike.

A national search is ongoing to find a replacement for Catherine Ford after her retirement from 25 years a headmaster at Holy Trinity Epicopal Academy Upper School. But, according to the chairman of a Head of School search committee, that is turning out to be no easy task. The nine-member committee which first met in August is comprised of six HTEA board members along with three members of the HTEA staff. “She officially retires at the end of this school year, but we’re going to need somebody in place by the start of next year, either somebody on an interim basis or somebody on a permanent basis,’’ said Jack Ryals, a local realtor who also serves on the school’s board of trustees. HTEA also has hired a consultant Southern Teachers Agency to aid in the nationwide search, he said. Ironically, Ryals first met Ford as a fellow HTEA board member back in the 1980s, long before Ford began her stint in the school’s top leadership position. “We were on the board together before she was headmaster so I’ve known her a long time,’’ he said. And with that knowledge comes a sense of the challenge that lies ahead, he said. “It will be impossible to fill her shoes. It’s going to

A child’s grief is one of humankind’s most difficult pains to accept, and a huge motivating factor among volunteers and donors in making a difference in the world. Suntree Elementary School students collected 73 teddy bears to place in the arms of children who have experienced the loss of a parent or another loved one at the Bright Star Center for Grieving Children. It is an initiative of Health First Hospice and also hosts Camp Bright Star. Brevard County is one of the few school districts in the state to offer instruction on string instruments in all schools, and students want officials to know it’s much more than fun time when considering programs to cut in a tight budget year. Mysteri Hewitson is a fifth grader preparing for her first performance at the 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 Strings Concert Showcase at Ralph Williams Elementary School in Viera. Strings students from Manatee, Andersen and Golfview elementary schools also will perform. “I’m kind of nervous. I’m concerned I may not remember all my music for all the numbers,” said Mysteri, who was influenced

to take up strings because of her mother’s love for violin music. According to her music teacher, John Kurowski, there are a number of reasons Mysteri will not have to worry about that, as strings are the gateway to learning and strengthening many other school subjects, as well as memory and other skills that facilitate learning and performing in all areas of life. “Strings study creates permanent pathways in the brain that strengthen memory skills, and music overall facilitates math instruction because it is based on mathematics,” said Kurowski, who also is a math teacher. Music appeals to, and is helpful to, individuals whose strengths are on both sides of the brain, from the more scientific and organized — like Kurowski and many of his students — to the more artistic and creative, as with others. “Strings instruction improves hand-eye coordination, which helps with gross- and fine-motor skills used in sports and other physical activities,” he added, “as well as enhances occupational and physical therapies that some students need, or prevents or curtails their need of them all together.” A number of students in his strings class reported

anecdotal testimony to back that up, with a number stating that strings study inspired them to go above and beyond what is taught in the class to research and experience higher learning in both music and other school subjects, many saying that it turned them into “human sponges.” Gearing up for a performance is vital to building character, discipline and confidence in all areas of life, according to strings specialist Diana Williams, who travels to Viera and Rockledge high schools and their feeder schools, Williams, Manatee, Quest and Anderson elementary schools. Suntree is in another specialist’s cluster. “In their preparations, they get a tangible reward weekly by learning and mastering new things, and then that accomplishment makes them want to do more,” Williams said at the end of a lesson at Williams, demonstrating to students the proper way to put down and hold a violin when done performing, as the stage will be crowded Jan. 28, much like with a full orchestra. “Having them perform in front of their parents, siblings and family friends completes that school-tohome connection, and really gives students the validation they crave,” Williams said. For Mysteri, all of these qualities may not be in the forefront of why she chose to commit her free time to learning and rehearsing the violin. “It’s fun and I love it,” she said. VV
