Ford’s 2009 autobiography “Still Dancing” has garnered national media attention, first on Animal Planet’s “A Pet Story” and later a segment on the “Today” show and articles in Cosmopolitan and Guideposts.
After being bullied in high school because of her illness, Gabrielle “Gabe” Ford of Viera, now a national anti-bullying spokesperson, had all but given up, for nearly four years shutting herself in and the world out. “I just thought everybody would treat me like those kids in school did. I cut myself off from people really,” she said. That was before she got a long-eared coonhound name Izzy as a reward for starting to get out of her shell. “The only one I even wanted around me all the time was my dog. I love animals so much because they are always there. She didn’t care what I looked like or that I couldn’t do things anymore,’’ she said. Ford, who moved to Viera from Michigan in March, suffers from a rare genetic neuromuscular disease called Friedreich’s Ataxia. “Ataxia means without coordination. My nerves don’t communicate that well with my muscles, my coordination is poor and it’s progressive. I was born with it. I was a dancer, just like most kids. When I was 12, I became symptomatic. I walked wobbly and I couldn’t stand still,’’ she said. Ironically, Izzy later would come down with a similar condition,
