Medal of Merit marks four years of hard work By Linda Wiggins

Once in a while a kid comes along who excels at everything he puts his head and hand to, and yet remains a humble, approachable, genuinely nice kid. Ryan Garwood is just such a guy. It makes one want to ask the parent in wide-eyed desperation, How’d you do that?! Viera High School senior Ryan Garwood was personally awarded the 2013 Congressional Medal of Merit last month from District 8 Congressman Bill Posey, with each student being recommended by his or her high school principal. “As much as I would like to take credit, I can assure you that Ryan is a self-made, self-motivated person of his own,” said Alice Garwood, Ryan’s mother. She and Ryan’s

father, Eric, both work full-time professional jobs and are also busy at home shuttling two children around their busy scholastic careers. Ryan’s sister, 10th grader Katie, is similarly accomplished. When VHS principal Jim Hickey was tasked with recommending a student for the award, there was no hesitation. “Ryan is just an amazing kid. Not only is he well rounded, accomplished in academics, athletics, music, civic involvement, but he’s well mannered, doesn’t draw attention to himself despite his attributes,” Hickey said. In fact, when asked to comment on the award, Ryan replied, “My parents and my teachers helped me accomplish my goals.” Garwood has an unweighted GPA of 3.9, which means the grade

He a member of the National Honor Society, BETA Club, Spanish Honors Society and possesses numerous other academic awards. Garwood played on the tennis team, which twice won district and regional championships, garnering the scholar athlete award for 2012. He is also a member of the orchestra, proficient at playing the violin. He has volunteered at the Brevard County Teen Court and many nonprofit groups, interned for Posey, campaigned in the election at Mitt Romney headquarters, took part in the American Legion Florida Boys State program in Tallahassee, just to name a few of his

Shared love of golf draws new residents to new friends

VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins

Scott, left front, and Jan Gunnell, to his top right, hosted a Derby Day party to introduce their many golfing best buddies to their new home. By linda wiggins

Want to know how to have a great life doing what you love, surrounded by great friends? Sit at the feet of the masters, Jan and Scott Gunnell of Suntree. The Gunnells became Columbus, Ohio snowbirds to their Merritt Island waterfront home in 2003 and moved down from the cold North full time in 2012. The weather and vistas were terrific, but life would get better. They decided to take up golf, joining the Suntree Country Club last year. They made fast friends. “I’m kind of shy, but it was pretty easy,” Jan Gunnell said. “I

first met two friends here who were helpful by introducing us around to all their friends. The people at the club were so friendly, they just brought us in, and then all of them introduced us to all of their friends.” Eventually, the drive was just too far to make every day, and Scott Gunnell began to look wistfully at all their friends driving to the clubhouse in their handy little golf carts. They decided to put their Merritt Island home on the market and look for one near their friends. They bought a home directly on the golf course in the Fairways

development in December and spent three months making every inch of it their own. In March, their old home sold and they moved into their new home to finish the project. Scott did the “heavy lifting,” including refurbishment, new landscaping, driveway pavers and much more. Jan literally refined and designed every horizontal and vertical surface inside the home, and selected just the right furnishings and home fashions. “It’s amazing what they did to update this home. It’s just gorgeous, inside and out,” said fellow Suntree resident Cathy Burger, also the realtor

who sold their own home and helped the Gunnells settle on the new one. “The most amazing thing is how they carved out a lifestyle they love, and made so many new friends, in such a short time,” Burger said. She motioned her hands around the interior and exterior of the house to the dozens and dozens of new best friends who attended the house’s coming-out party on Kentucky Derby Day, Saturday, May 4. Attendees were mostly either Suntree Country Club members, Suntree residents, or both. The fun-loving

fellow golfing buddies all wore Derby dresses and gear, topped with flouncy hats and caps, with a prize going to most fabulous of them. When the Gunnells finally stood in front of their custom-designed large front door and waved goodbye to their friends, Scott’s eyes scanned across the driveway and twinkled with delight when they came to rest on two of their home’s favorite new features, one for him and one for her. He smiled. “Yes, we finally got our golf carts.” VV

Greener pastures await Harmony Farms with Duda land donation By Rosemary H. Lynn and Linda wiggins

Harmony Farms will now have a home of its own. The Viera Company has donated 5.5 acres in the nonprofit’s name to build a permanent barn and will provide the use of another 19 acres. The donation is a critical step in obtaining funding. Grantors hesitate to give grants to develop leased property, according to Harmony Farms founder and Executive Director Pam Rogan. Duda has provided the use of the red barn and land on Stadium Parkway to Harmony Farms for 14 years. “Our county has a definite need for alternative therapeutic and recreational programs for individuals with disabilities,” Rogan said. “This new center will help meet that need.”

Rogan cautioned that the operation still is in dire need of community support, including donations of time, services and equipment as well as financial help. The location will be off Wickham Road across from Heritage Isles on what is now a sod field. The ground breaking for the new facility will come this summer, which will allow Harmony Farms to expand its current programs, add new curricula and hopefully eliminate its long waiting list. Harmony Farms’ equineassisted programs are tailored to each individual’s needs, including veterans recovering from posttraumatic stress and physical injuries. Craig Technologies, owned by the parent of a child served by Harmony Farms, are the hosts and one of the sponsors of the Buckaroo Ball. “My son has been a rider at Harmony Farms since the age of 4,” said Carol Craig of her son, Danny. “I have seen first hand how the therapeutic riding program helps people gain physical confidence and emotional stability by working with the horses and volunteers. Each year, GFWC Clubs (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) in the state nominate one of their members to attend the GFWC Florida Leadership Education and Development Seminar. The member that is nominated possesses the potential and desire to assume a leadership role within her club. The GFWC Viera Woman’s Club nominated club member Susan Swanson to attend the development seminar that was held at the GFWC Florida headquarters in Lakeland on Jan. 12. She was honored along with other seminar attendees at a banquet held during the Florida Federation’s annual conference on April 12 at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando. Law officers to youth: By Linda Wiggins

Law enforcement officers have been using surfboards rather than billy clubs to prevent rather than react to pill-popping youth. After more than a year, as they say in surf lingo, progress is “cranking.” “When we talk about prescription pill abuse we’re talking about a whole new monster,” Steve Furnez said. He and fellow Brevard County Sheriff ’s surfing

buddy deputies Brandon Gish and Troy Deavers came up with a game plan to buck the trend while carving up waves in 2011. Their growing volunteer group, LEOSA — an acronym for the national nonprofit Law Enforcement Officers Surfing Association founded here in Brevard — puts on public events to attract youth with cool T-shirts, caps and other gear, pops up a booth in areas that attract youth,

and drops in at schools and churches and other group settings to educate youth on the pitfalls of pills. “These are not people who were smoking crack or doing cocaine and wound up moving into prescription drugs,” Furnez said. “This is your honor roll kid and budding athlete on the road to a sports scholarship who got legitimate injuries and wound up becoming addicted, then started giving up all aspects of their lives.” The trio talked to a lot of people before launching the program and determined they needed to work at the front rather than the end of the pill process. “When we talked to judges and attorneys, they all had one question at the end: ‘How do we rehabilitate offenders?’ We told them it would be way more effective to prevent it in the first place than to rehab them,” Furnez said. Rather than scaring kids straight, the LEOs simply lay it on the line with education on what happens to the brain, body and lifestyle when addiction sets in, and for many, that means the very first pill. The tactic has won partnership from role

Deavers said they get some of their best material from the teens they have arrested. “They tell us their addiction to the pills is so strong they would do anything to get more,” Deavers said. “This is why there is a huge increase in the number of high-school students committing crimes, to pay for their prescription drug addictions. It really does affect us all.” While rehabilitation may be tough, LEOSA has racked up wins in that category as well. “For some who are already addicted, we have been able to influence them to take steps toward recovery,” Furnez added. Belk volunteers celebrate by helping schools VIERA VOICE Jill Gaines

Through the Points of Light program, Belk employees provided two hours of volunteer service to local schools on Thursday, May 16.

Quest Elementary School Art Club artists on May 16 painted a picnic table, bookcases and 20 murals to adorn the school. Belk provided all the materials and project tool kits to assemble, sand and paint the picnic table, paints for the canvas murals, and shelving, built by volunteers. The project is designed to set the tone for academic success and student achievement. “My Art Club artists have been so excited about this event that they showed up at my door two days early to get started,” said Karen Monahan, school art teacher. June 8 marks 50 years since St. John the Evangelist Catholic Community associate pastor Rev. “Father Donald” Mainardi was ordained into the priesthood. The mood in Washington, D.C. where the ceremony took place was an interesting one. The Civil Rights movement was in full swing. The Vietnam War intensified under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. JKF made the hard choice and not the easy choice to land astronauts on the moon, and accomplished it less than 10 years later, but not before his assassination. Mainardi took his vow at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the largest parish in the United States, on the Catholic University of America campus where he went to school. “It has been a privilege to serve in the fullness of the priesthood,” said Mainardi, who will be honored at the 4:30 p.m. mass Saturday, June 1 by Bishop John Noonan, who oversees the nine-county Orlando Diocese, including churches, schools and charitable outreach. A special dinner will follow. Mainardi, who came to the St. John parish a decade ago to help out with mass on weekends, will preside over the 11 a.m. Sunday service, followed by a special luncheon at the Indian River Colony Club. IRCC and surrounding Viera, Suntree and south Rockledge communities welcomed Mainardi when the congregation first met at the Government Center in Viera, he said. “I chose to serve here because the

people were so warm, welcoming and had a special quality to them,” said Mainardi, who retired as pastor of his own parish with medical problems and convalesced as a member at St. John. When he was strong enough to once again preside over mass, he was offered the welcome opportunity to do so here. Mainardi’s love for members is mutual, according to St. John pastor “Father Brad” Beaupré. “People love to come to his mass because of his preaching,” said Beaupré, who arrived at St. John about five years ago and said he has relied heavily on Mainardi’s assistance. “He’s been a tremendous help whenever we need him, a gentle, gentle man.” VV

Dr. Scott reaDer Opportunity awaits young performers to star in musical Hairspray at King Center By Rosemary H. Lynn

The musical “Hairspray” is coming to the King Center in a big way. Dr. Anastacia HawkinsSmith, director and producer for the historic Cocoa Village Playhouse, will direct the dazzling musical and is now looking for young people to audition for the large cast. Applications for onstage performers for all parts, stage hands, costumers, musicians and technical assistants are currently being accepted. “Hairspray” is a wonderful addition to local theatre and having a venue such as the King Center is a large step for young people entering high school in the fall up to second-year college students. Hawkins-Smith emphasizes that everyone in that age group is invited to audition. She stressed that singing and dancing parts are important; however, these are things that can be learned with the help of Natalie McKnight, assistant director and choreographer, and music director Janice Black. Conductor William H. Yoh Jr. is also interested in students who play various instruments. Scenery and lighting techs will also be needed. Ian Cook is in charge of scene design. HawkinsSmith explains that there is a $35 application fee. A fee of $325 is also required which pays for costumes, theatre venue, T-shirts, two tickets to the show and administrative expenses. For qualifying students, a scholarship or payment plan may be available. The application fee will be applied to the final fee. According to Karen Wilson, director of Theatre for the Youth and Outreach

Dr. Anastacia Hawkins-Smith, executive director and producer for ‘Hairspray’ stands with Karen Wilson, director for the Theatre for Youth and Outreach program at the King Center on April 17.

Program at the King Center, and Hawkins-Smith, a very large cast is needed, so no student is discouraged from participating. A diverse ethnic group is needed to fulfill the cast requirements. Students who live a long distance from the King Center may take the Space Coast Area Transit bus directly to the King Center. Also, carpooling is an option since many students may be coming from the same area of town. Acting in the play will be a prestigious addition to a student’s resume. Also, young people will gain many friendships and learn teamwork as they work together on stage. “It is a training ground for students who wish to pursue a career in performance,” Wilson said. Life-building skills go hand in hand with participating in such a large show as they work together and learn to give and take. Hawkins-Smith has been in show business since she was 6 years old. She has been executive director and

producer at the historic Cocoa Village Playhouse for the past 23 years and is fondly known at the “drama mama” by many of her protege. Her energy and enthusiasm is unfailing and her love of working with young actors and singers is boundless. Auditions are at 12:30 p.m. June 17 at the King Center. Anyone entering the theatre after that time is not guaranteed an audition. Final determination of performers will be at the discretion of the director. The performances on the King Center Main Stage will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 19 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 20 and 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21. The five-week program will focus on skills such as auditioning, acting and stage experience along with dancing and narration. For more information and an application contact the King Center at 321-433-5717 orwilsonk@brevardcc.edu or Hawkins-Smith at staci@ cocoavillageplayhouse.comVV

More than 3,000 fans were on hand to cheer on Manatee Elementary, which defeated Golfview Elementary 21-3 in the 10th annual Faculty Softball Game. By Carl Kotala

Her son was a standout pitcher on the Rockledge High baseball team this past season, but this time around, it was Kelly Coffin who was signing the autographs. “No, never,” the Manatee Elementary School fifth-grade teacher laughed when asked if she ever thought she’d be the one getting such a request. “… My one moment of glory.” Manatee’s faculty and students had plenty to be happy about after defeating Golfview Elementary 21-3 in the championship game of the 10th annual Faculty Softball Game at Space Coast Stadium. Earlier in the night, Quest defeated Ralph Williams Elementary 12-7. It was the first time the game was not held on the final day of school, but nevertheless it drew a crowd of roughly 3,300 fans. Former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie was even on hand to throw out the first pitch.

“We had the most walk-up sales we’ve ever had,” said Manatee pitcher and event organizer Todd Zgonc. “It was the biggest crowd we’ve ever had for both games. … The fans were loud. It was amazing.” Manatee has now won seven straight. Coffin, who like Zgonc has played all 10 years, said the night was, “a blast. It’s so much fun. It’s great to see the kids come out, all the families.” That included her own son, Patrick Coffin, who led Rockledge to a district championship this past season. So how much grief does mom get from son? “Oh, a lot,” she laughed. “Last year, I went 0-for-3 and he never let me live it down. But he worked with me all season.” Mom had a couple of hits this time, so all that work must have paid off. In fact, it seemed like everyone involved had a good time. “It was a phenomenal night,” Zgonc said. “Great crowd … everybody’s happy.” VV

Viera Vipers tennis team participates in USTA 10 and under tennis challenge

SPORTS NOTEBOOK By Carl Kotala

VIERA HIGH BASEBALL It was a historic season for the Hawks (20-8), who won their first-ever district championship and advanced to the Class 7A regional semifinals before losing 3-2 to Oviedo in eight innings … Pitcher David McKay had a shutout through five innings and struck out nine in an outstanding performance … Viera defeated Lake Howell 2-1 in eight innings in the quarterfinal round on a game-winning hit by McKay, who also pitched in relief of starter Grant Willcoxon. HOLY TRINITY SOFTBALL The Tigers’ trip to the Class 3A postseason was shortlived as they lost 15-0 to Montverde Academy in the regional quarterfinals. Montverde would go on to reach the state’s Final Four … With a host of young players like eighth-grader Talia Douglas and sophomores Paige Golson and Alyssa Nelson, the Tigers showed just what kind of potential they have down the road as those players get older and stronger. The future for Holy Trinity softball is bright. VIERA HIGH SOFTBALL A season that started off so well did not end that way for the Hawks, who were upset by University in the district championship game and lost 9-1 to Lake Howell in the Class 7A playoff opener … Viera still had a strong season, finishing 21-6 overall … Senior pitcher Ana Breeden was 12-4 on the year … With so much talent returning, the Hawks figure to be back in the thick of the playoffs next season.

A team of four boys and two girls from Viera Regional Park participated in the first USTA 10 and Under Region 4 USTA challenge tennis tournament in Port Orange. This was the first state competition for this team that finished second place. All the children started playing tennis from ages 6 to 8 in the basic QuickStart program, which has been running at the park since 2009. Members of the team coached by PTR certified instructor John Menton were selected from the STOV tennis program called “Beyond QuickStart.” This program began in February 2012 with 16 children ages 9 to 11 years, coming out of the basic QuickStart program. The Beyond QuickStart program

accepts children ages 9 to 11, who have been through the basic QuickStart program and have expressed a desire and commitment to play tennis through middle and high school. Parents also must be committed to the program. Children who have not participated in the QuickStart program may also be accepted upon demonstration of the minimum skill requirement and commitment to the program objective. All tennis courts at the Viera Park are permanently marked with the required USTA and ITF blended lines for teaching children ages 10 and under. One-hour classes are held twice a week. For more information, contact Barbara Wong, STOV Tennis, at 321-6310419 or John Menton at 321-266-6150. VV

It didn’t strike Marquis Burgman that he had been so prophetic until days after the Holy Trinity boys track and field team had won its second consecutive Class 1A championship. “I was very excited for everyone,” Burgman said. “I told all my friends at the beginning of the year, you come out and work hard and we’ll be state champions again. I wanted all of them to get a ring.” Thanks to the performances of Burgman, Alex Brown, Cole Oliver, Tristan Kattenberg, Michael Cacciatore, Dan Welch and a host of others, the Holy Trinity boys easily captured their second state title. Burgman won the state championship in the 110 high hurdles, while Brown and Oliver finished 1-2 in the 1,600 meters. Kattenberg was second in the 3,200 while Brown was third and Cacciatore finished eighth. Welch was second in the 800 and he, Cacciatore, Brown and Oliver teamed to win the 4x800 relay. Additionally, Corey Smith was third in the pole vault, James Lovett was fourth in the 100 dash and J’V’on Butler was fourth in the high jump. “We were really well-rounded this year,” Holy Trinity coach Doug Butler said. Holy Trinity’s girls finished second in the state despite missing one of its stars — Daryth Gayles, who sustained a hamstring injury at districts. Her sister, Gaby, won the 400 meter dash and McKenzie Kilborne won the high jump despite the re-occurrence of a back injury. In fact, after Kilborne had cleared 5-4 on her second attempt and her closest competitor needed three tries to clear that height, Butler held his sophomore out of her final two jumps … which she thought was going to cost her the title. “I thought I had just lost,” Kilborne said. “When the official came up to me and told I had won, I was in shock. I thought I was (on the TV show) Punk’d or something. I thought he was joking.” Kilborne also teamed with Natalie Walcott, Alisha Pound and Gaby Gayles to win the 4x100 relay. Julie Wollrath was second in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. With only one senior, Mackenzie Dummer, on the state qualifying team, the Holy Trinity girls figure to be top contenders for the next year’s title. Gaby and Daryth Gayles, meanwhile, will get the chance to run for Team USA at an international junior competition in Puerto Rico this month. “It’s really exciting,” Gaby Gayles said. VV

Kaylee Nutting started playing softball in the fifth grade. Her mother, Angela Brown said, “She played volleyball for one season in the eighth grade, but didn’t have the passion for it like she does for softball.” That passion has been with her throughout her school career and despite little activity playing for the Viera Hawks, she has played travel ball for Orlando’s Sting for two years. “She is the Hawks’ best kept secret,” Brown said. “They have kept her on the bench the whole season but that isn’t stopping her.” Three days a week, Nutting and her mother have made the two-hour trip to Orlando where her coaches pushed her to aim for the top. She not only excelled on the ball field, but academically, too. “Kaylee applied to FAU, Auburn University, St. Leo and Stetson,” Brown said. “She was accepted to the honors college at all of them and was offered scholarships for all, too. She was offered a full ride for tuition at Auburn and FAU.” Nutting chose Eckerd College. She attended a softball camp at Eckerd during the summer of 2012. She was invited back to meet the Triton team and try out for a position six weeks later and was consequently offered a position for the 2013-2014 season. The student-athlete can throw a softball at 59 mph from short stop to first base. In addition to shining as an athlete, Nutting volunteered at Brevard Zoo as an aquarium assistant in the Paws On area, but her volunteerism did not stop there. Viera High School players work on a field goal attempt during spring practice. With only seven seniors, the Hawks will be very young next season. edit By Carl Kotala

County power Merritt Island before opening the season the following week at home against Rockledge. Among the players to watch for the Hawks will be quarterback Cody Dentmon, who will be entering his senior season. “He’s come into spring with a confidence about himself because he understands the offense and what’s going on. You can see a difference in him.” Other key players for the Hawks this spring include Caleb McDaniel at defensive back, Devin and Tre Nixon at wide receiver and running back, Marquis McClain at wide receiver and Jordan Stengel at linebacker. Viera went 1-9 overall last season with that one victory marking its first-ever win in district play. Mays and his staff had 60 players come out for spring football, giving the coaches plenty of young talent to try to mold into a future contender, which Viera players seem determined to become. “We’re going to be young,” Mays said. “But we’ve got some guys hungry to get out there and get things started, get things changed around into the right direction.” VV

Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy football coach Mark Ainsley (blue shirt) reacts following a play during last month’s spring practice. By Carl Kotala

Watching his players run around during spring practice, it’s easy to see why Holy Trinity football coach Mark Ainsley is amped up about the potential of next year’s football team. “We’re going to be pretty good,” the Tigers coach said. “We had a really good offseason in the weight room, saw a lot of gains. I think this will be one of the fastest teams we’ve had.” Returning quarterback Dan Welch, who will be a junior next season, is a big reason for that optimism. Welch shared time with departing senior Johnny Gomez last season, but when Gomez went down with a broken collarbone, Welch stepped in and led the Tigers in some of their biggest games of 0the season. Other key returners include linemen Dylan Ryland and Garrett Heinlen, along with J’V’on Butler at defensive end. While there is plenty of room for optimism, the

Tigers must overcome the task of replacing 13 of 27 varsity players — including the entire receiving corps — from last season’s team which went 7-3 overall. Ainsley said his players are going through a “massive learning curve” this spring as he tries to indoctrinate new players — those who transferred in during Christmas break, or those who played junior varsity last season — into his system. The Tigers were set to play their spring game on May 31 against John Carroll at Holy Trinity. “We’re coming along and things are looking better,” Ainsley said. “It’s just a matter of how long will it take us to gel. “We’ll still look rusty in the spring game, but that’s OK. That’s what it’s for, to get some of that (rust) off. I’m pretty excited.” Holy Trinity will play the Kickoff Classic Aug. 23 at Warner Christian before opening the season Aug. 30 at Father Lopez. Vaccine Questions & Answers Ian BIRkBeCk, DVm IsLanD anImaL HosPItaL at VIeRa

One of the most common reasons for a trip to the vet is the annual wellness visit. Along with a physical exam and routine diagnostic tests, this visit frequently includes one or more vaccine boosters. These routine shots can often be a source of confusion for many pet owners, but this doesn’t have to be the case. I want to take some time now to address some common pet vaccine questions and hopefully take some of the mystery out of this common aspect of pet care. How do the vaccines work? Put very simply, vaccines present the immune system with a virus or bacterium so that the immune system can form antibodies which play a role in attacking the infection. These antibodies hang around after vaccination, which will hopefully prevent an actual infection if encountered later. The bacteria and viruses in vaccines have been either killed or changed in such a way as to render them incapable of causing normal disease. Why should I vaccinate my pet? The benefits of routine vaccination can be thought of in two ways. First, it protects an individual from contracting a disease. Second, it provides an immunity across the population as a whole, which decreases the overall prevalence of a disease. The goal is to administer vaccines as infrequently as needed to provide adequate levels of protection. Even though the prevalence of some pet diseases like canine distemper virus is relatively low, it is still important to continue vaccinating in order to keep the population protected.

to determine which vaccines are recommended for your pet. An exhaustive list of all the possible vaccine scenarios is beyond the scope of this article (and would be boring. So instead, I’ll outline the most common vaccines administered to adult pe The American Animal Hospital Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners break vaccines into two categories: core (important for all pets) and non-core (given based on certain risk factors). This is a helpful way to organize th array of vaccines out there. Core vaccines for dogs are rabies virus, canine distemper virus, canine adenovir type 2, and canine parvovirus type 2. The last three are often combined in a single injection referred to as a “distemper” for short. These are typically boostered one after the initial series, then every three years after that, depending on the product used, local laws, and local prevalence of these viruses. The core vaccines for cats are rabies virus, panleukopenia virus, feline herpes virus type 1, and feline calicivirus. As with the dog, the last three are frequently combined into a single injection referred to as “feline distemper”. These are boostered at one year after the initial series then every one or three years a A one-year rabies vaccine is used for cats more frequently than for dogs. The non-core vaccines in dogs include Bordetella and parainfluenza, two common and contagious upper respiratory infections. These are usually recommended for puppies then boostered yearly, sometimes more frequent based on risk of exposure (frequency of boarding, grooming, going to dog pa socializing with friends’ dogs, or any other situation where groups of dogs g together). Lyme disease and leptospirosis are administered if a dog will be an area or has a lifestyle where there’s a risk of encountering these disea The most common non-core vaccine for cats is feline leukemia virus This is usually recommended for kittens becaus they are most susceptible to the illness is then boostered annually depending risk of exposure which typically depen on time spent outdoors or exposed to outdoor or indoor/outdoor cats. Hopefully this overview will help yo better understand the purpose for the routine vaccinations you encounter at your pets next wellness visit. Remember, specific vaccine recommendations can va depending on your pet’s circumstances a well as your veterinarian’s experience, s be sure to ask your vet which vaccines a needed to keep your pet healthy and ha VV

Hawk Cart teaches Viera students about business

They may be gearing up for summer vacation, but for the members of Viera High’s Business and Finance Academy who will make up next year’s senior class, it’s also time to take stock of the business they will be soon be running. The Hawk Cart is a mobile kiosk that sells items such as pennants, T-shirts and backpacks with the Viera Hawks logo on them. It has

been in business since Feb. 14, 2011. Managing it has become the senior class project. “Just recently, we’ve been taking inventory on what we have, how much we need to sell to make a profit and making sure the prices are reasonable,” said Abby Comando, who will likely serve as the Chief Sales Officer (CSO). Teacher Sandy Spence, aka the company CEO, plans to have a number of

students fill a variety of management roles within the group, which will sell items at sporting events, during registration and, of course, during graduation. Proceeds from the cart go to help fund activities for the senior class. Since its inception, the cart has raised roughly $4,000. Students not only get to help price items, but they also pick out which items to sell, in what colors, and even which vendors to use.

charge for bottled water at graduation. They settled on $1. “You’re not going to sell a water bottle for $3, because that’s like Disneyland prices,” Comando said. As Spence pointed out, the goal of the cart is not to charge exorbitant prices, but to run a fair business. The biggest seller to date has been the backpack that sells for $5. VV

New thrift store in Viera ready for expansion in next few months BY ROSEMARY H. LYNN

God’s Way Thrift Store on Murrell Road in Viera is a tidy little resale shop which was previously Viera Thrift. Pastor Roger Wood and his wife, Carrie, purchased the store after making a decision to move from Delaware to Florida to work with Teen Missions on Merritt Island which has been in operation for more than 40 years. The couple own five other thrift stores in Delaware, which benefit the needy in Africa, Haiti and other countries. Steve McCeney manages God’s Way Thrift Store. A former disc jockey, he also runs God’s Way Moving. He is a burly man with a passion for helping others including homeless vets who need basic clothing and shoes as well as coats and boots. McCeney says that there are so many homeless veterans in Brevard County, including women vets, that it will be a challenge to help them with their needs, but he is determined to do so. As soon as the store relocates to a larger facility, he will be able to accept larger donations of furniture and

heavy appliances. The Woods are moving to the area in July. They have purchased a home in Viera and are excited about their new undertaking in Brevard. Right now, in addition to McCeney, they have volunteers helping with the store. They have spent the past 17 years taking teenagers on missions. They often bundle up large amounts of clothing to take with them since the residents of the countries they visit have very little in the way of basics.

Sometimes they have so many clothes, they ship them overseas to the needy, particularly the children. “Giving back is our personal mission,” Wood said. He said they started out with two bags of clothes. As the business grew in Delaware, they soon opened more shops in order to accommodate the residents. They have more than 20 employees in those stores. The shop is located at 5445 Murrell Road in Rockledge. For information, call 321-806-3933. VV

Health First CPR Day Special to Senior Life

Health First will provide a free event to help train people how to save a life. The fifth annual Free CPR Day is open to anyone age 5 and older. This is the first year the event will include a free 5K event. Everyone who participates in the CPR training or 5K will receive a free T-shirt. The Health First Education & Training Center will provide the American Heart Association’s “Friends & Family” CPR and AED Training. This non-certification training may not meet most job-required qualifications. Registration is required for both the 5K and CPR training. To register for the event, visit HealthFirstOperationCPR. org. For more information, call 321-434-4380. “Learning CPR and how to survive a heart attack is just as important as preventing a heart attack,” said Health First Medical Group Cardiologist Dr. Cesar Jara. “At Health First, we help provide the tools the community needs to do both.” In 2012, the Heart Center at Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center performed more than 1,000 heart and vascular procedures.

This year’s event will also include: • Magic pizza oven for children provided by Pizza Gallery & Grill. • Balloon artist. • Heart healthy physician lectures and cooking demonstrations. Activities for children hosted by ROCK (Reduce Obesity in Central Florida Kids) • First Flight helicopter landing. • Brevard County Fire Rescue. • Blood Mobile. • Appearance by Manny the Manatee. • Robotic demonstrations. • Live music from “Cloud 9 Orchestra.” People who complete the free CPR training will also receive: • One free ticket to the June 8 Brevard County Manatees baseball game. • A certificate for a free personal gourmet pizza from Pizza Gallery & Grill • A certificate of CPR “Friends & Family” training completion. VV

VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins

John and Diane Baggett, shown in front of one of John’s grief-soothing oil paintings in their Viera home, will celebrate 25 years of marriage and a shared journey to help others. By Linda Wiggins

John and Diane Baggett of Viera were instantly drawn together more than 25 years ago. Perhaps it was that they both experienced grief and were inspired to help others overcome their own loss. John Baggett had endured tragic grief when his son was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 17, a severe mental illness that drove him to irrationally believe people performed mental telepathy on him to induce a heart attack. Ultimately he became violently dangerous. “I grieved the loss of all my son would never be and that I, as a father, would never experience,” said John Baggett, who climbed out of a sea of depression after learning to grasp God’s lifeline through Christ that was there all along. His recent book, “Finding the Good in Grief: Rediscover Joy after a LifeChanging Loss,” is a fivestep journey to help grief sufferers find their way back to joy after loss. When she was a carefree third grader, Diane Baggett discovered her severely injured mother at the bottom of their basement stairs after a fall. She was forced to go get help, later sacrificing her childhood to nurse her mother back to health. For Diane Baggett, the experience led her to a nursing career first, a grief counselor later. “I love people. I thank God for giving me a compassionate heart,” said Diane Baggett, who has a private counseling practice

in Suntree. While Baggett is an author — this his fourth book dealing with spiritual and emotional issues — the pair unofficially counsel through their Suntree United Methodist Church. Both approach their friends, fellow congregants and strangers alike with open arms and a hug. They follow up with a genuine “How are you?” and hold eye contact and listen until they receive a full and honest report. “Grief is God’s way of healing us,” said John Baggett. “The problem is there are pitfalls and stumbling blocks on the journey.” The Baggetts, both mental health professionals, say their goal is to assist others in laying aside the crutches they may lean on that keep them stuck in grief. Alcohol, illegal and prescription drugs, marital affairs, excess eating, extreme spending, workaholism and more are used to escape the pain rather than reach out to God for true healing, they agreed. “Our church has a saying that flashes on the sign along Wickham Road, ‘…it’s OK not to be OK — really,’ and that’s what I mean to show,” Diane Baggett said. “God is preparing us even though we do not know he is preparing us. Through Christian friendship, I really want to meet them wherever they are, and help them in their journey back to joy so they can do the same for others.” For more information or to contact the Baggetts, go to johnfbagget.com or call 321- 757-4015. Sunshine Juniorettes Haley Breese, Brittney Davidson and Jessica Dowell help plant a Pinwheels for Prevention garden at the GFWC headquarters building in Lakeland.

By LINDA WIGGINS

The Sunshine Juniorettes Club meets monthly in Viera to plan how the middle and junior high school girls might meet the needs of the community’s most innocent members. The General Federation of Women’s Club-affiliated group’s decision to help abused, neglected and abandoned children was most welcome to the groups charged with providing services. “It is absolutely essential that the community help our children, both in foster care and those at risk of entering the system,” said Dr. Patricia Nellius, CEO of Brevard Family Partnership, which coordinates services for the Florida Department of Children and Families. Sunshine Juniorette Club members Haley Breese, Brittney Davidson and Jessica Dowell helped plant a Pinwheels for Prevention garden in April at Lakeland’s GFWC headquarters, which sponsored 1,000 pinwheels. According to Nellius, the campaign represents efforts to increase community activities and change public policies to

prioritize child abuse prevention so that it never occurs in the first place. BFP relies on civic groups, church communities and members of the community not only to provide resources, but to surround families who take on the task of foster care with loving support in any capacity that is practical for them, Nellius added. Devereux in Viera, as a residential school for children with emotional challenges, is a foster care provider and is also BFP’s chief provider of foster care support services to foster families. “People giving something as simple as gift cards, so frazzled foster parents can take time out to bond, or for new clothes so their children can start off the year feeling good about themselves, really makes a difference,” said Devereux spokesperson Patricia Hurst. Overseen by the Viera Woman’s Club, the Juniorettes is open to girls within driving distance and currently has members from Viera/Suntree, Port St. John, Palm Bay and Melbourne. This column will discuss the many aspects and variables of association living. We’ll start by briefly describing the several different types of Associations in Florida. Often owners will use HOA as a generic term for their Association. HOA is actually an abbreviation for Homeowners Association governed by statute FL720. Homeowners usually own the lot surrounding their home and a percentage of common areas and amenities of the Association. Condominium Associations fall under statute FL718. Owners own only everything inside the paint of their unit. Everything outside of the paint, including the building(s), common areas, and amenities, is owned by the association and each owner shares a percentage of ownership. FL723 regulates mobile homes. Owners usually own their mobile home and pay

rent to a park owner in order to use the common areas and amenities. In some cases, owners own their mobile home and the association owns the common areas and amenities. In this case, owners share a percentage of ownership and most provisions of FL720 would apply. Less common in Florida are Cooperative Associations regulated by FL719. Owners buy shares in the Co-op which owns all units, buildings, common areas and amenities. These associations generally have some things in common. All are governed by a board of directors usually elected by members. The board has a fiduciary duty to carry out all of the provisions of the articles, declaration and bylaws. Members pay assessments for the maintenance and management of common areas and amenities. Associations are usually referred to as “Deed Restricted which means owners are required and agree to abide by all rules and regulations found in the declaration and bylaws.

Holy Trinity baccalaureate and graduation shine BY Darrell Woehler

The Scott Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy was the scene for the baccalaureate and commencement for the 95 members of the school’s graduating class of 2013. The baccalaureate ceremony, which is a centuriesold religious tradition conducted in connection with graduation, was held Friday, May 17. Rather than wearing the cap and gown of graduation ceremonies, male student attire included navy blazers, while the young ladies wore white linen dresses, making impressive looking graduates. The structure of the service loosely followed the morning and evening prayers found in the Episcopal Church’s Book of Common Prayer. The Scott Center was nearly filled for the service. Following the baccalaureate, it remained filled for the viewing of the senior year video showing all the various student and school activities of the year. The graduation ceremony itself took place on Saturday morning, May 18, also at the Scott Center. It took on a completely different tone, one more of elation rather than the somber atmosphere of the baccalaureate. After entering Holy Trinity as young boys and girls 12 years ago, they are now leaving as young men and women, having gained in book knowledge, as well as absorbing the core values of Holy Trinity based on the love of God, self respect and the respect of others. These values were emphasized by salutatorian Christina Darwish and valedictorian Andrew Win, as well as alumna commencement speaker Tiffany McKenzie.

Also departing with this year’s graduating class is Catherine Ford, headmaster for the past 25 years. Though quick to deflect credit to her students and her “wonderful faculty,” it was easy to see how the respect for her by students and fellow teachers was earned.

Not one to sit and watch things go by, she plans to continue her involvement in various organizations, and perhaps add a few new ones. VV

The White-tailed Fawn

By Charlotte and Charlie Corbeil

The white-tailed deer inhabits Florida from the Panhandle to the Keys. The common name refers to the white underside of the tail, which is thrust upright and waves to signal danger. Breeding season (rut) in northern states is synchronized. In Florida, timing occurs in all months and differs by regions. It may even adjust yearly within the same region. This variability is often influenced by dry or wet seasons and by Florida’s milder climate. Compared to Northern states, productivity is low and twinning is relatively scarce due to lack of good nutrition. A well-nourished doe generally yields one fawn initially. Thereafter, two are customary, but there is the possibility of triplets and rarely quadruplets. If underfed, she will likely revert to bearing

(Odocoileus virginianus) only one or none. Gestation lasts approximately seven months. The newborn is mostly void of smell, but the doe’s scent attracts predators. Therefore, she makes contact with her youngling primarily for nursing. To further avoid detection, she eats its droppings. Yet, she must leave it unattended for hours when she grazes. The tall grasses of a forestedge habitat are suitable cover for a stationary fawn, and its white spots provide camouflage. In a litter, each offspring is separately concealed. Whenever fleeing is essential, the doe’s white tail guides the way. The fawn is swift; it outruns a human five days after birth. Foraging with its mother happens in three to four weeks, weaning around four months. This herbivorous species feeds mainly at dawn and dusk. Twigs, leaves,

fungi, acorns and fruits are often consumed. Regrettably, also targeted are agricultural crops, home gardens and landscape plants. Although mostly nocturnal, white-tailed deer can be viewed in daytime. At the Viera Wetlands, this fawn (pictured above) was sheltered in the pickerelweed. It bleated for its mother. Typically, a fawn and doe remain together from six to 18 months. VV
