Brigadier General Anthony Cotton, USAF Patrick Air Force Base “Follow your heart and passion. Don’t listen to those folks who tell you why ‘you can’t’ do something. Hats off to Class of 2012

After 13 years of classes, all-night study sessions, exams, experiments and term papers, the days of attending primary and secondary school in Brevard County came to a close last month for many teenagers as they walked across stages at their high school graduation ceremonies. Graduation marks the end of one chapter and creates mixed feelings of relief, sadness, happiness and anticipation. It also marks the beginning of a new life for the graduates, a journey where the children who once roamed the halls of area schools and transformed into teenagers will soon become men and women, taking on new responsibilities in their lives. They will develop patience, learn new skills, create or develop their faiths and hopes while entering into a new and uncertain world, carrying with them the teachings and knowledge they have acquired. To help guide each graduate, whether it be in college, the military or in the workforce, local school officials and business leaders provide words of encouragement and insight for the class of 2012 and their bright futures.

Carol Craig - Founder/CEO of Craig Technologies “You can do anything you can put your mind to! It’s never too late to embark on a new path and there are no such things as boundaries. Don’t automatically accept what you’ve been told and seek out your own way to apply your passion to create something. Enjoy your time as a young person in business and exercise your voice. Remember that the action you take today is your legacy. Be yourself and make an impact!” Joseph Duda - Retired in 2010 from A. Duda & Sons, Inc. where he served as CEO. Previously served as President and CEO of The Viera Company. “Success measured in dollars and cents and what they can buy doesn’t equal happiness. Happiness cannot be purchased at any price. Your happiness, personal fulfillment and success are gained by giving and helping others to achieve and succeed while your success and achievement come along for the ride.”

The Brevard County Tourism Development Office is conducting a study that will measure the financial value of serving as the Washington Nationals’ spring training home and look at potential options and alternatives, should the team decide to move. Washington, which has trained at Space Coast Stadium since 2005, is under contract to be in Viera through 2017. However, the team can exercise an out-clause once annual bond payments of $765,000 are completed next March. The Nationals are in talks with Lee County about a possible move to Fort Myers for the 2014 season. “We will try to speak with them later this summer about their plans,” Brevard County Manager Howard Tipton said. “Right now, we’re under contract through 2017 and at this point, we expect to have that partnership through that time.” Should the Nationals decide to leave, and even if they don’t, the county is exploring the idea of bringing more amateur sporting events to Space Coast Stadium, which is also home to the Brevard County Manatees, a High Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. Because they are independently owned, it’s conceivable the Manatees could remain in Viera no matter what the Nationals do. However, it’s clear that county officials would like to get more use out of the stadium.

Locals will knit and natter for social craft day By Angela Smith

A group of local fiber artists will take over part of the Suntree/Viera library June 13. They won’t be there to catch up on their reading, but to show others their hobby is as popular as it was in grandma’s day. “Even if it may be seen as an old-fashioned craft, it’s really being embraced by the younger crowd,” said Barbara Heeb of the Sit & Stitch group that meets twice a month at the library. “We get people of all ages at our meetings and I think they come to learn, but socialize, too.” Socializing will be the key at the June gathering as the established group and newcomers will participate in World Wide Knit in Public Day celebrated each June, connecting yarnies around the globe with their communities

It’s an opportunity to show the world that the craft can be a community activity, and that

Florida-friendly landscaping saves water

Association Living By Frank Kneiser CMCA, AMS, PCAM

Associations are usually very exacting about the appearance of their common areas and owners’ yards. Most associations have rules or language in their documents controlling landscaping. In 2009, the Florida Homeowners Association law was amended so that associations may not prohibit owners from implementing Floridafriendly landscaping. The purpose and result of implementing Floridafriendly landscaping is

preserving Florida’s water resources and preventing pollution of waterways. These types of plants also withstand most hurricanes better than other kinds of landscaping. Florida-friendly landscaping promotes using the right plant in the right place. In other words, design your landscaping by using grasses, plants and shrubs that are best suited to your conditions. Some of these environments include soil types, grade of the terrain, proximity to salt air, drainage, winds and local weather. In addition, types and uses of fertilizers are considered to prevent water pollution. Since 2009, most commercial fertilizers sold in Florida are

nitrogen-free. Nitrogen is the chemical in fertilizers that is the main cause of water pollution. There are many sources to learn more about Floridafriendly landscaping, including websites, libraries and books that can be purchased at your lawn and garden store. The best local authority I have found is the Brevard County Extension Service. They personally answer questions and offer a variety of classes. Their website has a calendar of classes at brevard.ifas.ufl.edu. They also offer a publication called The Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Handbook, which goes into detail on installing your Florida-

friendly landscaping. If your association is enforcing landscaping rules and regulations, it may be a good idea to consult your association attorney to be sure you are in compliance with Florida-friendly landscaping.

It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his Community Association Manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@suntreeflorida.com. VV

Suntree replaces Interlachen median landscaping Special to Viera Voice

The median at the intersection of Wickham and Interlachen roads has been given a complete facelift by Suntree Master Homeowners Association. The median has been a landscape maintenance nightmare for several years because the live oak trees there had been severely stressed. It had not been possible to successfully grow grass and shrubs. Because of physical constraints, the irrigation was inadequate. Suntree General Manager Frank Kneiser contacted Brevard County horticultural experts Amanda Elmore and Loren Rapport. Elmore, of Brevard County’s Natural Resources Management, agreed that the trees were stressed and needed attention. She advised against removing them. Rapport suggested a very hard pruning and fertilization. That work was done three months ago and the trees are thriving. Rapport, Brevard’s

M & M employees report that drivers passing the median at the intersection of Wickham and Interlachen roads have expressed compliments on the improvements. Landscape Design and Maintenance manager, prepared a new landscape design using Florida-friendly plants as suggested at the St. Johns River Water Management District website. The plants used include dwarf jasmine, holly fern, cast iron plants and European fan palms. Once established, the plants will require irrigation only during a drought. Crushed coquina rock was added as an accent. Kneiser sent a request for bid proposals to local

landscape companies and the HOA chose M & M Landscape and Irrigation to do the work. The irrigation system was entirely replaced with a more efficient design and equipment. The old soil was removed and replaced with high quality planting soil containing pesticides and fertilizer. Suntree, Viera and south Rockledge residents have been building up the Cuban people spiritually and physically for a decade now, marked by a charity dinner held at Suntree United Methodist Church (SUMC) on May 16. Proceeds from the event will benefit acute needs of the local church’s Cuban sister congregation. “The path has been very interesting, filled with ups and downs,” SUMC Cuban mission chairman Merlyn “Nat” Natto said. “It’s been a very rewarding.” Five years after the Cuban government allowed its residents to attend worship services for the first time since 1960s Communism, Natto stepped up to lead the mission. Within a month, the mission committee selected El Redentor church, located on the east coast of Cuba, near Guantanamo Bay. Natto and his wife, Mary Lou, traveled to Cuba a month after that, in 2002; since then, SUMC pastors and members have made a mission trip there each year.

Extreme poverty, government scrutiny, violence and natural disasters could not dampen the reawakened faith of sisterchurch members, according to SUMC senior co-pastor Terri Hill. “The amount of pure faith they have is amazing, with such a deep joy, despite their external conditions,” Hill said. “We have so much more in material goods, yet we, as Americans seem generally obsessed with the pursuit of more, thinking it will finally result in happiness.” SUMC led a drive to help rebuild the church building several years ago. It has since served as a sturdy hurricane shelter for the town of Holguin, with SUMC members responding to the call for disaster relief for sister-church members and the community. Next year, for the first time, a pastor from El Redentor will visit SUMC, as travel restrictions lessen. It remains an exhaustive bureaucratic process due to the Cuban government’s concerns that their traveling residents will not return, in addition to U.S. restrictions. Old VHS athletic equipment to eat Crust’s dust By Rosemary H. Lynn

From age 3 to age 83, on Sunday, May 6, at the Viera Pizza location on Fiske Blvd., 546 participants showed up for the Eat My Crust Run/ Walk to raise money for Viera High School’s athletic department. The race started at 7:30 a.m. as bystanders cheered participants through the course that wound around a Viera neighborhood and ended in front of the restaurant. Viera Pizza employees baked pizzas for runners to eat when they returned and had donuts, bagels and fruit, as well as plenty of cold drinks, waiting. Volunteers scattered throughout the area handed out water as the runners ran through the finish line. Many local businesses participated in the event,

which helped assure people were on hand, available to assist the runners. The first to finish was 17-year-old Jonathan Campbell with a time of just over 17 minutes. He won medals for overall first place and for first place male contender. His friends, Morgan Levine and Bobby Hermida, came in just after him. At 8:45 a.m., the Lil’ Pepperoni Run began with children sprinting to the finish line to receive their medals. Viera Pizza’s mascot, Joey Pepperoni, led them to a starting point and encouraged them to do their best. Runners were treated to goodies at the end of the race and awards were handed out. Besides the medals, there were many door prizes, including spa packages, iPads, restaurant coupons

Name in lights for Rockledge leader By Rosemary H. Lynn

Stepping into the Rockledge home of Larry and Wanda Schultz is akin to entering a museum of sorts. More than 75 plaques of appreciation adorn the walls in two offices and the family room with hundreds of colorful paintings and other memorabilia from their world travels. Larry Schultz was mayor of Rockledge for 12 years before taking on other challenges, such as his passion for fundraising and travel. In April, the City of Rockledge dedicated the park at the corner of Fiske Boulevard and Levitt Parkway to its former mayor in appreciation for his tireless giving and

community spirit. He spent 45 years as an aerospace engineer for NASA at Kennedy Space Center and was key in developing the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). He wrote the agency standard for ground support equipment. Not content to rest quietly on his laurels during retirement, along with his wife, he formed the Relay for Life team, Wine-ing for a Cure. The fundraiser became important to Larry when his first wife died of cancer. They call themselves the Winers because all the members of the team love wine, which is served at their fundraising dinners and included in gift baskets.

Wanda, who refers to her husband as a “professional do-gooder,” is the one who picks up items for the gift baskets, puts them together, and does most of the behindthe-scenes work for the relay. The couple formed the ROC, the Recreation Open Space Conservation Foundation, that supports such important recreational venues as parks, playgrounds and anything to do with Rockledge area recreation. A doggie park is in the plans, something many residents want. Larry Schultz now serves on the board of Wuestoff Hospital and is president of his Trinity Lutheran Church’s congregation. He continues to be busy within the political

April 25, 2012 was like most school mornings for Viera High School junior Shelby Rath—until she walked into the kitchen. Joan “Noni” Hookie, Shelby’s maternal grandmother, was in the kitchen, when without warning, she fell face-first onto the ceramic tile floor. Had it not been for Shelby’s actions, her grandmother may not have survived the fall. Shelby said, “I ran over to Noni and tried to help her up. There was blood everywhere, puddles of blood on the floor and blood all over her clothing. While I was trying to move Noni, my dog Reggie must have thought I was trying to hurt my grandmother because he was biting and scratching my face. I finally was able to sit Noni on top of the trash can but I was so scared. I’ve never been that scared in my life; it was complete chaos. Should I call 9-1-1 or try to stop the bleeding?” Shelby said she knew she needed help “So I ran next door to a neighbor’s house; no one was home so I went to another neighbor. She called 911 and came with me to help try and stop the bleeding by putting pressure on the wound. The ambulance came and took Noni to Viera Hospital.” What Shelby didn’t know at the time was that her grandmother had severed an artery near her eye, had multiple fractures around

her eye and her head was bleeding internally. The injuries were so severe that Hookie had to be transferred to the trauma center at Holmes Regional Hospital. Shelby was also unaware her dog had left bite marks and scratches all over her face. Adding to the chaos of the morning was the fact that Shelby’s parents had left early to take Shelby’s mom for surgery. Still, amidst the commotion, Shelby called

While beauty and poise are desired qualities in women, leadership and volunteerism round out the total package, according to Lee Thompson, member of the Genera Federation of Women’s Clubs Viera Woman’s Club and youth liaison for the April 21 GO Threads fashion show fundraiser. “Our goal is to create more volunteers and train them up with excellent leadership, organizational and people skills to be able to create positive change in our community and beyond,” Thompson said. The fashion show was a project of the group’s youth division, the Sunshine Juniorettes, founded in 1966,

in part, to prime the pump of future Greater Federation of Women’s Club members. The girls raised money for schools in Africa to provide 35 uniforms for impoverished children through the Global Orphan Project. Teen and adult fashions were provided by Charlotte Russe, PACSUN, Caché and Patchington. Membership in Juniorettes has been life altering, according to Natalia Hernandez-Pryzlak, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy rising senior and organizer of the GO Threads event. “I first planned on going into medicine, but now I want to do so much more. I want to major in business and go into international relations,” said Hernandez-Pryzlak, who

is now picking up her third language, French, to add to her fluency in Spanish and English. Membership in Juniorettes opened rising senior and GO Threads model Claire Roberts’ eyes to the needs of others and the issues across Brevard County. She delivers Meals on Wheels to impoverished seniors in the neediest areas of Rockledge and Cocoa. “I was shocked to see that some people’s homes are practically the size of my bedroom,” Roberts said. “It really did not occur to me how thankful I am for what I have. It makes me want to do more for others less privileged.” For more information, call Thompson at 321-507-4460 or email gthompson53@ cfl.rr.com. VV

Viera High School’s teacher of the year is honored By Angela Smith

Amy O’Reilly was a new teacher when Viera High School opened in 2006. She struggled with inspiring teens to read. Today, she is Viera High’s 2012 Teacher of the Year, recognized by her colleagues as a motivated teacher expanding the horizons of her students. “She makes her own activities and it’s unique, making us want to read,” said Austin Bailey, O’Reilly’s ninth grade student. “She goes above and beyond to help out her students and she has good patience and presence, and I’m finding it easier to read now.” A 15-year veteran of the Brevard County School District, O’Reilly started her career teaching at Clearlake Middle School and believes good teachers excite students about learning in a

way that motivates them to be lifelong learners. “I want them to take what I teach them and run with it,” O’Reilly said. “I like using Web 2.0 things, articles on current events, things I think will hook their interest. I use a lot of technology because they’re very interested in it and I just want to show them that it’s not a drag to read and you can do it outside the classroom, too.” O’Reilly’s inspiration for teaching came early and she knew no other career would fit. “My grandmother was a reading teacher; my mother taught at the college level, so I cannot picture myself doing anything else,” O’Reilly said. “When I was young, I used to teach to my stuffed animals. It’s always been something I’ve wanted to do.” But what she didn’t expect from the career was being chosen as teacher of the year.

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Mary Dawson, a highly-decorated Viera High School senior golfer, has signed to play at Daytona State College next year. May 14, 2012. By Carl Kotala

After putting together an impressive list of accomplishments during her four years of playing golf at Viera High School, Mary Dawson is going to continue her career at Daytona State College. “Daytona State was right for me because it’s a two-year school,” Dawson said. “So I could go there for two years on a full ride and then have a chance to go somewhere else. “The coach (Laura Brown) was just so nice, and always kept in contact with me. I can tell we’re going to have a really good relationship over the next two years and she’s really going to help

me because she’s a really successful golfer herself. It just seemed right.” In her four years at Viera High, Dawson helped lead the Hawks to three Cape Coast Conference Championships, four district championships, three regional championships, a second-place state finish in 2009-2010 and a state championship—the only one in school history—in 2010-11. On top of that, she was named to four All-CCC teams and four All-Space Coast teams, including the 2011-12 Player of the Year. She won the 2011-12 CCC and District individual championships and finished 28th, 23rd

and 19th in three state tournament appearances. Hawks coach Greg Ford was proud of the way Dawson matured and grew into being able to handle the leadership role during her senior season at Viera. He believes that two years of playing at Daytona State, under Brown’s tutelage, could pay off big down the road. “Coach Brown will get everything out of her,” Ford said. “I would be really surprised if after two years, she doesn’t go to a major Division I college to play on a full ride. I would be shocked. It will probably be a top 10 school, to be honest. She’s that talented.” VV

Viera High track trio brings home state medals

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Viera High School track standouts (from l-r) Andrew Grubbs, Justin Gorbea and Vianca Alfonso hold up the medals they won at the Class 4A state meet on May 16, 2012. By Carl Kotala

As a reward for doing something that surprised even herself, Vianca Alfonso stood on a podium at Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus to accept her eighth-place medal in the shot put at the Class 4A state track & field meet. “It was so cool, because you’re in front of all your friends and family,” Alfonso said. “The whole crowd is staring at you. It’s just a

It’s easy to see why the Viera High baseball team has every right to be proud of the season it just finished, and to get excited just thinking about the next one. The Hawks (16-11) set a school record for most victories in a season, beating the old mark of 14, which was set just a season before. On top of that, Viera graduates only one starter, Kenton Hering, which means they’ll be loaded with experience going into the 2013 campaign. “I felt it was very successful,” Viera coach Bob Doty said. “We were able to go 9-4 in the conference, which was our best

to place third at all,” Grubbs said. Alfonso, who broke her own school record with a throw of 34-8 in the regionals, threw 34-1/2 at the state meet. Her eighthplace finish was a reward for all the work she put in at practice trying to perfect her technique. This summer, she’s going to lift weights for the first time, and she just might be back on that podium as a senior. “I want to throw in the 40s by the end of next year,” she said. VV

really good feeling to have.” The Viera High junior was one of three Hawks to medal at the state meet. Senior Justin Gorbea finished fifth in the 400 meters and senior Andrew Grubb was third in the pole vault. Senior Carolyn Kruezkamp finished 10th in the discus with a throw of 97-4 and senior Kevin Mall, who missed most of the season recovering from a leg injury, was 12th in the shot put with a 46-3 toss.

Medals went to the top eight in each event. “It went well. I placed as high as I thought I could place,” Gorbea said. “I wasn’t even supposed to be going to state, but somebody pulled a hamstring in the regionals.” Ironically, Gorbea dealt with hamstring issues of his own over the past two years. The latest incident came at this year’s Cape Coast Conference meet, when he strained his right hamstring.

record in the Cape Coast Conference. We went 3-1 in the district, and played in the championship game. We played some very good clubs late in the year.” In fact, Viera played three teams that went on to reach the state Final Four in their respective classes: Melbourne, Timber Creek and New Smyrna Beach. Viera beat Melbourne twice this past season. “Anytime you can beat Melbourne and Merritt Island in one year, that’s saying something,” Doty said. “They’re always—along with Rockledge—among the top programs in the county.” Shortstop Reid Neal, who verbally committed to Florida Atlantic University,

highlights the list of returners. Neal led Viera in virtually every offensive category including batting average (.395), hits (34), RBIs (22), triples (four) and home runs (three). David McKay hit .376 for Viera and was also 5-4 on the mound with a 2.32 ERA. Grant Willcoxon went 5-2 with a 1.27 ERA. Big hitting outfielder Matt Cowan, who missed the entire season with a shoulder injury, should also be back. “We’ve got so much depth and young kids coming up through the ranks, boy, we should be pretty good for the next couple of years,” Doty said. Viera baseball has successful season, bright future By Carl Kotala

Although the hamstring was bothering him at the state meet, it didn’t stop Gorbea from running a personal record 48.49 in the 400-meter finals and conclude his career with his first state track medal. Grubbs, who tied his personal best by clearing 13-6, was in his first year at Viera after moving here from Adrian, Mich. He pole vaulted and was part of three other events as a freshman, but had not competed in track until this season. It paid off. “I didn’t think I was going

Viera softball enjoys another successful season By Carl Kotala

The biggest question facing the Viera High School softball team, coming into this past season, was how would the Hawks handle the graduation of three of the top players in the program’s young history.

Their answer was to win yet another district championship —this one in Class 7A—while going 17-9 on the season. “We had a pretty good year for a team that graduated such a great bunch of athletes,” Hawks coach Dale Pierce wrote in an email. “Trying

to fill in when you lose Alex Breeden, Kinsey Simmons (and) Kacy Vassallo−that is a tough one to swallow.” Viera’s season, which ended in the Class 7A regional quarterfinals, included big wins over Creekside (Jacksonville), which was ranked No. 1 in the State in Class 5A, and a win over Harmony, which was ranked in the top five in 7A at the time.

Not only did the Hawks rely on this year’s crop of seniors, who were all four-year starters – Lindsey Bishop, Mary Dawson and Shay Richardson – but some new stars arrived on the scene as well, which should bode well for Viera down the line. Freshman pitcher Sara Seibert went 7-1 with an ERA of 2.04, while sophomore Lauren Palombi led the

team in hitting (.424), doubles (six), triples (five) and also had 19 stolen bases. Ana Breeden batted .360 for Viera and she pitched in 20 of the team’s 26 games and did a “great job” this past season. She will be back, along with Kate Callinan, who went 4-1 with an ERA of 2.35. With a rotation that will include Breeden, Callinan and Seibert next season, the Hawks should not only have one of the best, but perhaps the deepest pitching staff in the county in 2013. “That is a good feeling,” Pierce said. Business backs community benefit By Linda Wiggins

Sorensen Allied Moving & Storage is the title sponsor of the annual Harmony Farms Buckaroo Ball slated for Saturday, June 16, marking the Viera nonprofit’s 20th year serving children and adults with disabilities via equine-assisted therapy. “I believe that dollars earned is not the only mark of a profitable business,” said Scott Sorensen, president and CEO of the company. “It’s also measured by the amount you can give back in making the community a better place to live.” Harmony Farms has made a national name for itself over the past two decades treating children and adults with developmental and physical delays and disabilities. “The number of lives our horses have touched is countless,” said Pam Rogan, Harmony Farms founder. Located on Stadium Parkway north of Viera Boulevard, the horses live in the big red barn and on land on loan from the Duda family, Viera town founders. Rogan repays

the equines’ favor; The farm is also a place one day where the horses―many of whom are rescued trauma victims― will live out the rest of their lives carefree. Sorensen said, “We are blessed with good health, but we have friends who are disabled and who have family members with developmental delays, so it inspires us to help in that way.” “As a veteran, I know what it is like to have an injury and a disability derail me from the life I imagined,” said Carol Craig, Harmony Farms board member. “It’s important to me that we do whatever we can to help individuals to see their abilities, and build on them to have a great life and make a difference in the lives of others.” The Buckaroo Ball starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Space Coast Convention Center Holiday Inn at SR 520 and I-95 in Cocoa. Tickets for the “dressy western” dinner dance are $50. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 321-631-9433 or go to HarmonyFarmsInc.com. VV

Manatee Elementary School in Viera presented two school talent shows on Thursday, May 17, 2012 in the school’s cafeteria. The primary show began at 5 p.m. and the intermediate show began at 6:15 p.m. Students in grades one through six displayed varied skills and gifts in music and dance. With the help and encouragement of their parents and teachers, they performed in front of a room full of spectators. Several of the students performed acts such as singing, dancing, playing musical instruments and even a martial arts demonstration. Paula Dribble, mother of Savanna Dribble, was in charge of the sound equipment. Her daughter sang a heartfelt rendition of Mirror, Mirror and was just one of the very young students to take the stage alone. All of the students displayed talent and bravery as they faced the audience. It was evident they had rehearsed at home and at school for many hours before their big debut. Cameras flashed and toes tapped as music played.

Viera Voice • June 2012

Musical instruments included piano, guitar, ukulele and even a harp. A large group of young dancers, dubbed The Manatee Dancers, performed at the beginning of the intermediate show. Before and during the performances, popcorn and pizza were available for sale along with cold drinks, making the talent show a very successful fundraising event for the school. At the end of the performance, school Principal Carl Brown and Assistant Principal Elaine Hall presented a photograph and plaque to Paula Dribble to honor her for the work she put in on the big flash mob presentation held on May 15. The flash mob occurred during Teacher Appreciation Week and included nearly 300 students performing for the teachers during a surprise presentation. Dribble, along with other teachers and volunteers, works behind the scenes of many student activities and performances. Champion speller again heads to nationals By George White

How does champion speller Stuti Mishra spell success? S-T-U-D-Y. The three time Brevard County champion, and two-time champion of the eight-county district in East Central Florida, gets up every morning at 5 a.m. to read and highlight the dictionary. The 8th grader at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy headed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in late May, where she competed with 277 other spellers. She placed 19th in the nation last year. But even better than the competition is that the bee enabled a family vacation to see museums, memorials and other sites. Along for support again this year will be her father, Tapas Mishra, mother, Sasmita Mishra and her little sister, Dhyana. “It was the best week ever, but this year I hope I can win,’’ Stuti said, prior to

her trip. She said not only does she study how to spell different words, and their meanings, she also studies origins of words in other languages and how words developed over time. “I practice all year round, early in the morning and whenever I have some free time after doing my homework. I read the dictionary and highlight the words. I also study roots and patterns to see how the word would be spelled. A lot of times, it’s the roots that help you figure it out,’’ she said. The word that put her out of the competition last year was a dinosaur named Coelurosaur. She said that her routine is not much different but there is a sense of urgency this year. “I guess I’m studying harder and more intensely because this is my last chance.” There is luck in terms of the words, but Tapas Mishra

Students gather after the wax museum presentation at Quest Elementary School on Wednesday, May 3, 2012. By Rosemary H. Lynn

Some visitors entering the lobby of Quest Elementary on the evening of May 3 said they felt as if they were experiencing a surreal event featuring famous people who have made a difference in our world. With the assistance of the teachers, students chose someone they admired from the past or present. They then learned as much about the person as possible and memorized a one-minute recitation which they would give when a visitor stepped in front of them and tapped them on the shoulder. Like wax museums that have

mechanical devices available with the lifelike figures displayed in the galleries, the children recited important facts about the historical characters they portrayed. The students did a remarkable job in memorizing their lines. The people they portrayed varied from successful business people to literary geniuses and clothing designers. Ryan Jones chose James Kraft as his character. When asked why he picked this particular famous person, the student said, “Kraft macaroni and cheese is my favorite food!” Casey Wilson chose to be Jack London, proving that

gender barriers can be broken in an event such as this. She was perfect in her recital of why he was famous and she obviously enjoys his books. Yet another young woman, Hannah Lucas, dressed as Hope Solo, the famous soccer player. The teachers and students who have been working on this project said they found it an interesting and creative way for the students to learn more about historical people they admire. It was also a learning process for those who attended to learn more about historical figures and how students today are discovering history. VV

Moms don’t dance at Mother & Son Night

Odyssey of the Mind® team on a quest

VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins

Mother & Son Night at Suntree Elementary School might just as well have been called Sons-with-Friends and Moms-with-Moms Night. While dads danced with their girls at the Father/ Daughter Dance earlier this year, something else was needed to call out the boys, according to an event organizer. Bounce houses, laser tag, Angry Birds bean-bag toss and hamster balls brought the boys running, their moms in tow, for some time with their peers. “We tried different things in the past,” April Murray said. “What we found works is having the boys run off to be with their friends, having a great time, and the moms hanging with other moms, relaxing. Knowing the kids are safe and happy, and they can have some ‘me’ time. Everybody wins.” Murray is a member of the Suntree Parent Teacher Organization, which organizes both events.

She said, “Though the format is the same as last year, some of the moms still got the wrong idea. “A mom and her son came dressed up to the necks in formal attire. When they saw what the event really was, they went home to change,” Murray said. Jason Montalvo was one of the dads who volunteered so that his wife, Beth, and their son, Alexander, could relax. “She is always working, so I wanted to take some of the load off her shoulders, but you can see she still will not sit down,” he said, working the hot dog stand as he gestured to Beth, handing out refreshments. The event was a nice change of pace from the many busy ceremonies and similar activities that fill moms’ schedules, according to Pam Bush-Jones. “It’s important to put ourselves first for a change,” she said, “because it is only when we are refreshed that we can truly give to others.” VV

Imagination and enthusiasm are key ingredients to success for the Odyssey of the Mind team from Quest Elementary School in Viera. The five-member team of fourth graders has had success, so far, after creating an “Ohh-motional” vehicle to be used at the Odyssey of the Mind® 2012 World Finals to be held May 23 through 26 in Ames, Iowa. Team coach Lara Tarrillo’s twin sons, Deegan and Chase, are on the team. She said, “They had to bring a vehicle that expresses emotion with two different forms of propulsion. They chose a quadruped pogo stick that converts into a hovercraft using a shop vac to create a cushion of air and electric drills used to move it along,” she said. “It was a

very creative answer to the problem and they took risks making the hovercraft. They also incorporated a lot of abstract ideas into the skit.” Tarillo said that the theme of the team’s performance was keyed on the noise made if notes played for themselves compared to beautiful music that will bring spring to the world when they play together. Each student will wear a t-shirt with a musical note representing a different emotion, like being happy or proud or sad. In addition to Deegan and Chase Tarillo, other team members are Julie Adams, Molly Wilson and Taryn Aebli. Their teacher sponsor is Laird Parsons. The Quest team and their pogo stick hovercraft took first place at the Space Coast regional OM competition in March and another first

place in the state in their age division at a competition held in April at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The team needed to raise $1,100 per child to make the trip to Iowa where they will be staying in the dorms at Iowa State University. Previous world finals were held at University of Maryland and Michigan State University. The experience will not end with the conclusion of the competition as, afterwards, the Quest team will serve as host to a high school team from Gdansk, Poland. Odyssey of the Mind was created in 1978 by Dr. C. Samuel Micklus, Professor Emeritus at Rowan University in New Jersey. For more information, visit odysseyofthemind.com. VV

Holy Trinity baccalaureate service is the start of students’ future By George White

Life after high school and the transition into college for many students requires faith and hope and planning, just like the pioneers faced when loading up their wagons

and heading West into new territory. That’s the analogy used by the Rev. Joy WillardWilliford during the May 11 baccalaureate service

for Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy (HTEA). Parents and well-wishers of the 71 Class of 2012 graduates nearly filled The Scott Center for Worship

and the Performing Arts, which served as the site for the religious ceremony as well as graduation held the following day. Among the procession was student Michael Cacciatore who carried a long whip-like pole for the Spirit Kite. The flying dove kite has served as a symbol of the Holy Spirit’s presence since becoming a tradition at the HTEA service in 2003. During the baccalaureate sermon, Willard-Williford highlighted the long history of HTEA, starting with the establishment of the church nearly 125 years ago and continuing with the establishment of the lower school in 1957 as Holy Trinity Parish Day School. In 2000, the school

expanded from a lower school on the parish campus to a 40-acre upper school located on the Pineda campus where it has become a premier independent college preparatory school. Evidence of the success of that role occurred when colleges were announced as each student was presented with a cross, many of the students going to elite universities and colleges throughout the country. In fact, acceptance to college is a requirement of graduation. Also presented at the service were Peace Awards, which are presented to male and female students “who exhibit the qualities expounded in the school’s core values: love of God, selfrespect, respect for one’s neighbors and respect for God’s creation.” The 2012 Peace Award for seniors went to Caroline Hament and Alan Martuch. Student Caroline Agid, announced the senior gift, paid for by the senior class: new furniture for the library. Also participating in the service were the Rev. Craig Hammond, co-pastor at First United Methodist Church and the Rev. Demetrios Tsigas of Saint Katherine’s Greek VIERA VOICE George White Orthodox Church. VV

Senior awards night at Viera High School By Angela Smith

For the amount of cheering in the Viera High School auditorium May 3, you’d have thought graduation had come early. It wasn’t commencement that students, parents and the school’s faculty were celebrating. They celebrated what each senior had accomplished in his or her academic career and where they are now headed. The school principal, James Hickey opened the fourth annual senior award ceremony. “This evening we honor and recognize our class of 2012 seniors for demonstrating outstanding leadership qualities and academics,” he said. “These students are

continuous in their pursuit of outstanding academic achievement and positive contributions to Viera High School and to our community.” The 90-minute ceremony honored 75 seniors who had exceeded expectations in scholastics, athletics and community involvement. They were awarded certificates of achievement and received scholarship funds totaling $2 million. Debra Traxler, guidance department head, believes the ceremony has become a sort of tradition. “We’re a pretty amazing school and I think it’s the parents and the students themselves that motivate them to get this far; they just know their job as a student and they do it,” she said. While the ceremony was a chance for the seniors to receive their awards, it was also to publicly announce their future plans to teachers, peers, family and the Viera community. “I feel like it gives recognition to the students, that they’ve done a good job,” said Parker Jacques, who was awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution Abigail Wright Chamberlain Good Citizen Award. “I think it’s important to have and share and I’m happy to be here.” For some seniors, the award ceremony was another push in

the right direction. “I think it helps students like myself (who) want to set goals,” said David Hook, “but also encourages us to strive harder in college too.” Hook was awarded a $100,000 ROTC scholarship to Purdue University. For parents, the night was bittersweet, cheering for their sons or daughters as they walked across the stage. Terry Grillo’s son Michael was awarded a partial merit

scholarship to the University of South Florida. “A lot of the students have to balance academics with athleticism and my son was in varsity track and cross country for all four years,” she said, “He was in an accident and overcame some injuries so he is a person who is really determined and we’re so proud of him. So it’s nice the school honors the students this way; it leaves a good impression.” VV

Vacation Bible School program reaches out to community

Viera Voice • June 2012

The school year is over, meaning local churches are gearing up for another summer of Vacation Bible School (VBS). These free or nearly free week-long programs, held weekday mornings and evenings, offer preschoolers to 6th graders a concentrated time of Bible study, activity, music, crafts, recreation and VIERA VOICE Rick Jones fun. Children at Suntree United Methodist Church sing “It’s a tradition and an together during last year’s Vacation Bible School. outreach to families in the It is one of many activities the children participate community,” said Pastor Ted in during the week long program. Wood of Rockledge United Methodist. “It teaches them the Bible, it relates faith to their everyday life, but also enables them to kind of act it out through a mission project.” While there are plenty of summer programs for parents to choose from, like swimming and music camps, area congregation members believe VBS can be different for parents and children. “It’s an opportunity to have parents put their children in a fun, safe environment where they’re taught biblical lessons,” said Rick Jones of Suntree United Methodist Church. “But I also believe that kids learn through experience and we do a really good job at creating an experience for a kid to always remember. They might not remember a lot of scripture at a young age, but they do remember smells, a room that’s decorated, a game they played with friends and the adults who taught them and prayed with them.” Beginning in the late 1800s, VBS quickly became a growing trend. First, as a four-week event, eventually becoming two-weeks, and today, most last one week. But the emphasis of it never changed and always incorporated church life. “We think it’s an opportunity to reach out to children for Jesus,” said Michelle Bartlett of Prince of Peace Church in Viera. “A lot of children don’t come to church on a regular basis, so we’re hoping VBS plants the seed within them to come to know Jesus and build a relationship.” For some churches, VBS is a drive to be a force in the community and keep children busy and learning. “There’s dual motivation; We want to provide an opportunity for children in the community to do something productive with their time and to do something special that stands out in the summer,” said Joe Schafer of New Life Church in Viera. “While spreading the Gospel of Christ.” Like other VBS programs where young people learn more about the Bible and how to have a stronger relationship with God, they also include fun, and Hope Lutheran Church in Viera added a kicking twist to theirs. “For our church, we focus on body, mind and soul,” said Pastor Mark Moreno, whose program is also a soccer camp. “So education is the mind part Bible school is teaching and learning. The body part is teaching Christian sports recreation, learning how to win or lose and be a teammate. Soul gives the opportunity to thank God and be a blessing to others. It’s unique.” Brandon Rieb with the Church at Viera, hopes their version of VBS, “SlamA-Jama” can get more children interested in worshipping together. “It’s an event for children in the community to get them excited about the word of God,” Rieb said. “To get a big group of kids together at one time to learn what can happen at church, how much fun you can have, experience and learn. It’s nice.” VV

BUSINESS Local business woman completes the Sprint Distance Triathlon in Clermont by Mary Brotherton

Kathy Heron, the owner of Sport Clips in Viera, is half the woman she used to be. After losing more than 100 pounds, she has a renewed passion for life and in the things that help her live life with more vigor. One of those passions is her athleticism. She recently completed the 2012 Sprint Distance Triathlon in Clermont, with a time of 00:20:08 in the swim competition, 00:50:05 in the bicycling competition and a run time of 00:40:12, for an overall total of 02:00:42. The course consisted of a 1/2- mile swim, 12- mile bike course and 3.1-mile run. She completed the course with loved ones nearby, not only to cheer her, but

Brevard Community College chooses Viera for new proposed campus, expands Institute of Public Safety

By Angela Smith

What is currently an empty lot near the Brevard County Government Center in Viera will transform into Brevard Community College’s (BCC) newest campus. The plan, that has a $14 million price tag for its first phase, will expand the college’s Institute of Public Safety, consolidating its many buildings throughout the county to one campus. “Right now, the programs VIERA VOICE Photo for the institute are scattered Kathy Heron and Lori McPherson on different campuses, so before the start of the 2012 the goal is to locate them in Sprint Distance Triathlon in one central facility to provide Clermont, Fla. the access to students,” BCC to compete with her. Her spokesman John Glisch said. sister-in-law, Tory Brock “We have four campuses; from South Carolina, and Titusville, Cocoa, Melbourne her friend, Lori McPherson and Palm Bay and Viera from Merritt Island, did is almost in the middle of their best to keep pace. the county. It’s right off the Heron said, “ I had a interstate, so it was the blast! I’ve been really centralized focus for both the working on improving my programs and geographically.” fitness since I lost weight in Despite previously 2010-2011.”VV expressed reservations by Florida Governor Rick Scott, after he vetoed funding for the proposed campus in 2011, the infrastructure work will begin, thanks to Viera-area Senator Thad Altman, who recently presented the plan during the state’s conference

committee after the regular session concluded. “Because of the recession and how it has hurt the state of Florida, and how badly the state budget has been cut in recent years, education at all levels, including higher education, has taken severe budget hits,” Glisch said. “We were fortunate enough this year to get the support of the legislature. We will receive $14 million for the new building, and $5.7 million specifically allocated for necessary renovations and upgrades on our campuses.” With the pieces of the new campus falling into place, BCC officials are ready to start planning the 40,000-squarefoot facility that will contain classrooms, labs and faculty offices, possibly opening its doors in 2014 that will change the Viera community and future generations of BCC students for years to come. “We are certainly aware that Viera is a growing and dynamic area, so putting the building and campus out there is an exciting opportunity for the college and could bring a lot of new high-end educational opportunities to students,” Glisch said. “While it’s not

the main goal, we do hope, by building this, it could increase enrollment in the program. People see you have a new state-of-the-art building offering what’s already been recognized as excellent programming could draw more students in.” For Marian Shelpman, dean of the institute, the importance of the new building is key. The primary facility now being used is a converted, three-decade-old outdoor basketball court on the Melbourne Campus, which is deteriorated beyond renovations. “This will provide us with critically needed training for students so that every aspect of public safety can come together — such as dispatchers, police and fire — to make certain there’s no disconnect when our students reach the streets in the real world,” Shelpman said in an email. “We’re very excited about the facility and I know our public safety partners, including the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and local police and fire departments, are too. It has been a long time in coming.” For information, call 321433-7022. VV

InfraTech’s original idea was to do technical assessments of infrastructure, but that idea has changed to something much bigger, according to President and CEO Allan Riggs. is salt water, so the resulting by-product is just like the medicine Milk of Magnesia,’’ Guignard said. The company’s slogan is “Need power? Just add water. “A total of seven battery charger prototypes are in the works for which the pair has applied for eight patents, Guignard said. Riggs expects the products will be able to be marketed worldwide, soon.

“We’re at the end of the development stage. Our first product will be a five-ounce wearable charger, like on your belt, that will charge six AA batteries 20 times, for $29.95,’’ Riggs said. The biggest markets for the chargers is expected to be in South America, Haiti or the Middle East, “places where there is no power yet they still need batteries,’’ he said. The power units are also expected to be used to power water purification units, where contaminated water, with just a small amount of salt added, can be used to create power to cleanse hundreds of gallons of water. Riggs and Guignard also believe the units will be perfect for use in powerless areas following a major hurricane, where most power lines are downed. Riggs said that his company has future plans are to create chargers for C- and D-size batteries and even a fuel cell the size of a D-cell battery and a battery that will be selfcharging when salt water is added. “But the real key to what we’re doing is that the chargers are green and produce no hazardous materials whatsoever,’’ Riggs said. Did You Know? Did you know that Bank of America (BOA) has made it much easier for some homeowners who are experiencing long term financial hardship to put their mortgage debt behind them and rebuild their financial lives? The program is known as a Streamline Cooperative Short Sale. It requires no financial documentation from the borrower, the deficiency is forgiven when the transaction closes, there will be no tax liability if the home sold was a primary residence, foreclosure proceedings will cease and the borrower will be paid $2500 at closing for cooperating. The new process is a pilot program where homeowners can submit their Bank of America mortgage account number through a RE/MAX agent who has access to a BOA Agent Initiation online portal. The agent has the ability to prescreen the loan to see if it qualifies for BOA’s Streamline Cooperative Short Sale Program. This process use to take six to eight weeks but now a borrower can can be instantly prescreened. If the loan passes prescreening, it is then forwarded to BOA for official authorization. What happens next if your loan is approved for the program? You would sign three documents to get the process started: a 3rd Party Authorization which allows BOA to communicate with you through your Real Estate Professional, a Borrower’s Acknowledgment of Interest which outlines the scope of the program, and an Agent Option Awareness, informing the borrower that they can use any real estate agent from that point on. If the homeowner wishes to proceed, BOA will pay for an appraisal and establish the current market value of the home before it is marketed for sale on the Multiple Listing Service. The transaction would proceed as a normal residential sale transaction.

Here are a few of the basic criteria that qualifies a loan for the program: – The first mortgage must be with BOA. – The BOA mortgage must be delinquent. – No more than two mortgages. – Must not have mortgage insurance. – FHA, Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac loans are not eligible. – The outstanding balance cannot be greater than $1.5 million. – Must not be active in Equator. What makes this streamlined Cooperative Short Sale Program so attractive? – The process is predictable, no wondering what the bank will accept. – No waiting for six months or more for bank approval – Complete debt forgiveness of the BOA mortgage when the transaction closes – Your real estate agent can negotiate a reasonable settlement for second mortgages with other lenders. BOA will assist. – No tax liability for debt forgiveness if the sale is a primary residence and the transaction closes by 12/31/2012. Visit IRS. GOV for more details on the The Mortgage Debt Relief Act of 2007. If the home is abandoned, this is a great opportunity to get the property out of your name. Many borrowers have ignored the liability they could incur if a serious crime is committed, or someone is seriously injured in an abandoned home.

To participate or get more information, you may call me directly at 321-412-7669, or my office at 321-255-1080. Just ask for George Bovell. I have an active Agent Initiation portal with BOA and my goal is to help as many people as possible through this mortgage crisis and restore happiness to their lives. Advertisement

Four students at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy received Certon Leadership Through Technology scholarships. This is a new scholarship offered to Holy Trinity students planning to pursue engineering or a related field at the college level, sponsored by Certon, Inc., a Brevard County-based company that provides

Certon has delivered services for the aerospace, medical and transportation industries. The award is to support students demonstrating excellence in the math and sciences as well as leadership and initiative among peers. The finalists attended an on-site interview with Certon

CEO Tim Stockton, who said he found, “The students were courteous, on time and very impressive in all respects, a true reflection of Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.” Alex Hoffman was awarded $1,500 toward his college while Peter Karas received a $500 scholarship and Jenna Marshall and Douglas Dial each received $250 scholarships. Parting Shot Gulf fritillary (Agraulis vanillae)

The Gulf fritillary, or passion butterfly, is common throughout the southern United States and as far south

as South America. Its name is derived from the migrating flocks of this species seen over the Gulf of Mexico. In

By Charlotte and Charlie Corbeil

Florida, it can be found in all 67 counties where it overwinters in the frost-free sections of the peninsula. This is a medium-sized butterfly (wingspan 2 ½ to 3 ¾ inches). The male is commonly smaller. The wings are vibrant orange with black markings—the female is more significantly marked. Three white dots circled in black are displayed on the leading edge of the forewing. The brown underwings exhibit elongated silvery spots. Reproduction involves metamorphosis. Initially, a small egg is laid on the host passionflower vine. The hatched egg produces a bright-orange caterpillar (larva) with conspicuous

black, branched spines. Its own toxic flesh protects it from predators, such as birds. This solitary feeder is often joined by large numbers of its kind; rapid defoliation of the passionflower vine is possible. Eventually, the caterpillar pupates. The pupa (chrysalis) is mottled brown and closely resembles a dead leaf. Finally, the pupa cracks open and reveals a butterfly. The length of developmental stages varies with environmental conditions. This distinctive butterfly can be observed collecting nectar from wildflowers in open, sunny habitats, such as fields and roadsides. Certain flowers attract this beautiful insect to home gardens: tall

verbena, drummond phlox, lantana, and pentas. At the Viera Wetlands, as shown in the photograph, the Spanish needles wildflower draws the Gulf fritillary. VV
