Street to send Viera Wetlands enthusiasts Charlie Corbeil Way By Linda Wiggins

A special friend of the Viera Wetlands will be brought to mind and remembered the first thing upon arrival to the Viera Wetlands, located at the west end of Wickham Road in Viera, and the last thing. Charlie Corbeil Way will be the name of the new road built by Brevard County to provide direct access to the wetlands, a 200-acre series of holding ponds designed to give a final polish to water cleaned by the adjacent treatment plant. Corbeil was a master Florida naturalist with unmatched knowledge about wildlife

assists the county in stewarding the resource. “We felt it fitting to designate the highest-profile naming opportunity for Charlie,” Berry said. The wetlands are a buffer between west Viera housing communities and permanent ranchlands owned by town founders A. Duda & Sons, with watershed nature preserves spanning the remaining distance to the St. Johns River, a main source of drinking water for Brevard and Central Florida. The vast greenbelt has attracted an enormous number and variety of birds to the area as year-round, winter or transient residents. Birders from around the world make the area a must-see spot. Corbeil also was a professional nature photographer whose images continue to be viewed all over the world. He was happy to give tips on nature photography to anyone who wanted to learn more. He also led popular photography classes at nature festivals to encourage love of wildlife.

The Viera Wetlands Nature Festival weekend in April will be dedicated to Corbeil, as will all of the activities for the year of the Friends of the Viera Wetlands. While some months have spanned since Corbeil’s passing, close friends continue to reel from the loss. None has felt the impact more sharply than his wife, Charlotte, co-author with him of the popular Viera Voice nature photography column “Parting Shot.” “The naming of the Charlie Corbeil Way and the special festival in April mitigate our family’s loss,” Charlotte Corbeil said. “We are so proud and thankful. Charlie’s enthusiasm for nature endures through his friends and caretakers at the Viera Wetlands.” For more information on the wetlands, go to brevardcounty. us/naturalresources/ environmentalresources/wetlands. A detailed feature on the Nature Festival will appear in next month’s Viera Voice. VV

A $25 donation will be required for entry. Kids in Commercials class starts this month at The Viera Studio By Katie Parsons

Kids with dreams of breaking into television acting will soon be able to learn exactly how at The Viera Studio at 3270 Suntree Boulevard, Suite 1113. The newest class offering, Kids in Commercials, will be open to children ages 8 and up at 7 p.m. Thursdays beginning in March. “This class will be different from our theatrical ones and will contain practical, oncamera lessons,” said Jonathan McFadden, co-founder of The Viera Studio. It opened in summer 2012 and has more than 100 students from age 3 through adult. The Kids in Commercials class will be taught by Rockledge resident and Central Florida commercial actress Victoria Lambert Monterrubio. She has appeared in more than two dozen commercials, as well as several television shows, infomercials and training videos. “I plan to teach on-camera techniques but also give kids a taste of the business side

6

of acting for television,” Monterrubio said. “We will go over finding an agent, creating an acting resume, auditioning and what to expect on the set when they land a role.” The class will also cover how to take direction and break down the “language” of commercial acting to acquaint kids with the process. When it comes to the actual acting, kids will learn to implement smaller actions that are camera friendly and use their voices in different ways. “For kids who are used to being on stage or musical theater, this class will be very different, but fun,” Monterrubio said. This is not Monterrubio’s first time in the role of acting instructor. She taught at the MDM Studio in Indian Harbour Beach before it closed, and McFadden was one of her students. So far, there has been a lot of interest in the Kids in Commercials class and studio co-founder Monica Toro Lisciandro said there is potential for a younger agegroup class to be added in the

Veteran linguist leaves behind a better way to learn new tongues By Linda Wiggins

There’s got to be a better way. That’s what Robert O’Brian said to himself when he was tapped to study the Japanese language in order to perform U.S. military counterintelligence in Japan and Korea. After percolating notions around in his brain for more than half a century, he finally published his revolutionary teachings in a series of books this past fall that help Spanish speakers learn English and vice versa, and use the same simple techniques to then pick up Portuguese — and as of this month — Chinese. He hopes to tackle Italian next because it is a cultural common denominator for many other languages. The series is called “A Comparative Vocabulary Study Guide.” “I always thought it was so stupid not to teach the vocabulary first. All languages have similar words with exactly the same or similar meanings. That’s where you want to start,” O’Brian said. “You’ll find you can communicate the basics in minutes, not years.” While it would be great for the books to become bestsellers, O’Brian would rather give them away. He does so, for free, to schools, nonprofit groups, and to all 17 branches of Brevard County Libraries. He recruited a Viera resident to partner in his

enterprise to carry on the effort past his lifetime, which, sadly, will likely be soon. He has terminal cancer and has already lived past his prognosis. “These books have inspired him to keep going,” said Dolores Ashland of Crane Creek. “He continues to astound his doctors.” The pair met a few years ago in Buenos Aires when Ashland moved there for rest and reflection. At the Buenos Aires International Newcomers group, which helps expatriates settle into the country, they hatched a plan over time that ultimately led to Ashland and her new husband, Guillermo, to relocate to Melbourne on O’Brian’s recommendation. The shared cosmic link to that Latin American country has many layers. Ashland’s father helped in the “deNazification” of Germany after World War II, where he met and married Ashland’s mother and they lived there during Ashland’s childhood. Argentina became a cultural highway for Germans as World War II wound down and expatriates sought a welcome political climate, and they found it in Peronist Argentina. O’Brian, a retired attorney and corporate consultant, found himself similarly drawn to that post-WWII cultural highway, teaching Japanese and other foreign merchants how to succeed in business in that and other Latin American countries.

Viera Voice Linda Wiggins

Robert O’Brian’s goal is to put as many of his books in the hands of those who need to easily learn English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and ultimately any other language.

The Chinese addition to the study guide line is a reflection of another cultural phenomenon, as alleged Chinese mobsters increasingly gain strongholds in those nations. They assist their countrymen in emigrating to South America in hope of ultimately completing the leap to the United States. Many never make it to the U.S. shores, but remain in what is tantamount to slavery under the threat of a person’s entire family being beheaded should the individual fail to comply along the way. “There is so much going on in the world that average Americans are unaware

of, but it will touch them if they are not prepared as the global economy unfolds,” Ashland said. In addition to giving the books to schools and nonprofits, she will distribute the books through her free tango classes presented at 5:30 p.m. the last Friday of the month at YMCA in Suntree, and at 5 p.m. every Sunday at Neptune Bar in Satellite Beach. “Learning to speak these languages directly will put the power in your hands, and that is Robert’s dream that I also see the

need for wholeheartedly.” For more information or to request books for nonprofits and schools, call 314-7754086. Books are available for purchase or as an e-book at Amazon.com, using the author’s name and title. VV

Authors program helps youngsters with the write stuff

By Mike Gaffey

Budding Hemingways or Dickenses can still hone their literary skills on or after the Feb. 27 return of Suntree/ Viera Library’s popular Young Authors program. Scott Hauge, the library’s head of youth services, will teach young writers between ages 9 and 16 the basics about penning books, short stories, novels, plays and screenplays. Participants share their works with classmates during a two- to three-week period at the end of the monthly program.

“They’ve written some really amazing stuff,” Hauge said. “I was really impressed.” The series sprang from a children’s short story-writing program at the library that got a tremendous response, Hauge said. “Based on that, I put forth the idea of a young authors program and I got a very good response to that, too,” he said. “We averaged approximately 16 regular students during last year.” Sessions are scheduled from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. every third or fourth Thursday of

the month at the library at 902 Jordan Blass Dr. Hauge said he will present the program from the beginning, so anyone who missed any classes in 2013 or wants a refresher can sign up. As he did last year, Hauge plans to have local authors speak to the young writers. Participants should bring a notebook and a pen or pencil. Registration is ongoing, but isn’t limited to kids in the 9-to-16 age group, Hauge noted. “I had a 6-year-old who came in and attended several sessions of the program, and she was able to share some of the stories she had written,” he said. “It was really great.” This month’s program will be on Thursday, March 27. Cars, floats and more will cruise the streets at the 10 a.m. April 5 Spirit of Suntree Spring Fling Parade, and sponsors are invited to cover the community event costs in exchange for consumer good will. By Linda Wiggins

It’s a beloved tradition that Suntree residents look forward to all year. They tote lawn chairs from their homes to main streets around the community to wait for some of the most outlandish floats to glide by. This year marks the second year that the tradition has resumed, the gap of many years created when previous volunteer coordinators simply got tired of carrying the load, organizers said. The current volunteers stepped up because the parade was just too much fun to miss. Spirit of Suntree Spring Fling Parade will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5. The route will begin in front of Suntree Elementary School on Jordan Blass Drive, head southwest down St. Andrews Boulevard, then turn north on Interlachen Road. The parade will end at Interlachen Park with food and live entertainment by the band Oceans. Previous routes ended at Suntree Country Club for post-parade camaraderie. “I think what a lot of residents don’t realize is that all of the fun events that are put on are done so by people like them, just plain fellow residents who decide to pitch in their time and energy so they and others can have fun,” said community resident and volunteer chair of the Suntree Master Homeowners Association Community Relations Committee Sally Contess. “We don’t pay our SMHA staff for anything but the professional management of our community.” The committee organizes

vieravoice.com

the parade, while the Parks and Recreation Committee organizes monthly events like movie nights and festivals at Jack Mahon Park on Spyglass Hill Road. Businesses, groups and individuals are invited to decorate a float, car, bicycle or golf cart and enter it in the parade. The Suntree Master Homeowners Association is looking for sponsors to underwrite the cost. Sponsors are vital because no association funds can be used on community events,

Contess said. “Community events are vital because they bring our families together in fun, so we feel even better about the great place we live in,” Contess said. “Our sponsors benefit because all our residents see what they are doing for us and we appreciate them.” There is no fee for parade floats, vehicles or other entry slots, she added. The digital service is free for children with a library card. “It’s really nice for the kids to have something that’s just their own and to be able to check out audiobooks and e-books,” Szymula said. VV

Suntree parents have turned their loss into gain for future babies and their families. The second annual Brianna Marie 5K Run/Walkand family festival Saturday, March 15 is on track to top the $30,000 raised last year. All funds raised go to advance livesaving surgical techniques performed before a baby is born. “This story started as one of sadness and tragedy. A parent can never prepare for the loss of a child,” said Aran Hissam, whose daughter Brianna Marie would have attended Suntree Elementary School with her brothers. “But over the past 18 months, the story really took on a new meaning. Brianna Marie, in her brief 15 hours of life, showed us what love means, how faith can bring you through anything, and what can come when a community of people turn a major loss into major gain by sharing in the same mission.” The race will be inside Wickham Park, 2500 Parkway Dr., Pavilion No. 4. Activities begin at 7:30 a.m. and the run managed by Running Zone starts at 8 a.m. A free children’s fun run also begins at 8 a.m., followed by activities to

He and fellow team surgeon Dr. Eftichia Kontopoulos of the Jackson Fetal Therapy Institute in Miami will speak on advancements and needs in the fetal surgery field. We wanted to be proactive and establish standards,’’ she said. The system has already demonstrated its value. Student Gianni Cacci, who had been pretested, suffered a severe concussion playing soccer. “After my fall, I felt fine and believed I was ready to start training again, but an ImPACT test … revealed my reaction times were slower and some of my readings

A subsequent test showed her abilities in the normal range with no long-term damage, and she was allowed to resume noncontact training, Kaufman said. Added Kaufman: “It’s a great tool and very objective. It gives me more authority.’’ “We consider it a unique tool in the ongoing care of the students in our care, because, after all, kids will be kids,’’ she said. VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Viera High coach Matt Sepesi has been impressed with just how much his players have improved since last season. That can only mean good things for the Hawks.

Big off-season means high hopes for Viera High boys lacrosse By Carl Kotala

Take an already solid roster, put in a lot of hard work in the offseason, and you have the ingredients for a pretty successful year. At least that’s what the Viera High boys lacrosse team is hoping for this year. “I think we’re a very good team,” Viera coach Matt Sepesi said. “The improvement that the kids had from last year to this year is huge. They all personally worked hard in the offseason to get to where they’re at now. “This is my fourth year coaching and the amount that the players have improved from last season to this season is the most I’ve ever seen.” Junior attackman Connor Neff and senior defender Joey Bowen were just two

of the Hawks who played in summer and fall leagues in order to improve their games for this season, and both think the Hawks will have a well-rounded team. “Our attack and (defense) are pretty solid this year,” Neff said. Other key players for Viera this season will include senior Alex Lenk (attack), sophomore Lane Miller (attack), senior Tyler Dacy (defense), junior Austin Crawford (defense), junior John Cassario (midfield) and senior Kyle Morgan (midfield). Last year’s team reached the semifinals of the district tournament, but this season the Hawks are hoping to get to the championship game and beyond. Viera will compete in the same district with Merritt Island, Rockledge, Holy

Trinity and Satellite. “The chemistry this year is a lot better than last year, for sure,” Bowen said. Viera also has had an influx of new players at the midfield position, which should be a key since they lost a number of seniors from that spot last season. “We have a couple of new players this year that are football players,” Bowen said. “We’re trying to get them up to par playing (midfield) defense.” It’s nice to have some extra size on the field, but the most impressive thing about the football players has been their knack for picking up the sport quickly and their dedication to improving. “They’ve invested themselves in learning the game, which is nice,” Sepesi said. Holy Trinity lacrosse—exciting time for girls, lots of potential for boys By Carl Kotala

While the Holy Trinity boys lacrosse team is hoping to pick up where it left off, the girls team is embarking on an entirely new journey. The second-year girls program will be playing its first season as a varsity team. “It’s really exciting,” junior Dani Thomas said. “Last year, we played as a JV team, but we played against varsity (opponents), so we kind of got the practice. I think we’re going to do better this year than we did last because we’re more experienced.” The Tigers, who are coached by Tammy and James Slattery, won two games last year playing against varsity competition. Not only do they have some experience coming back, they also have some new players who have played the game before. In addition to Thomas, players to watch for the Tigers this season include sophomore Drew DeSalvo, sophomore Taylor McHollan, eighth-grader Elysia Slattery, sophomore goalie Natalie

Thomas, who had never played the sport before last year, is definitely sold on it now. “I’d heard about it before and I didn’t play a sport that season so I was like, ‘Why not? I’ll give it a try,’” she said. “Then, after the first game, I was like, ‘I’m in love. Gotta keep playing.’” While the girls will be learning just how good they

can be, Holy Trinity’s boys lacrosse team figures to be one of the favorites in a new district that includes Viera, Rockledge, Merritt Island and Satellite. The Tigers will be led by a core group of seniors that includes Mike Leary, Trey Ville and Charlie Barger, along with goalie Mike Scott. Other key players include senior defender Cam Osman and a sophomore group known as the “groundhogs” — Noah Benjamin,

Justin Ganiban and Ricky Berthiaume. Coach Mike Leary said the key for the Tigers will be how well the younger players can pick things up defensively and help control the transition game. If that happens, the Tigers could be poised to get out of districts … and possibly make a deep postseason run. “We’ll be doing our part, but the guys who need to step up to make the season successful are some of the younger guys who are in more of the role (player)

positions,” Ville added. “They’ve adapted to their roles the way they should, so we’ve just got to keep working, keep getting our stick skills better and understand our defense. The offense will come.” Last year’s team finished the season strong before falling to Melbourne Central Catholic in the district playoffs. “Hopefully, we’ll just pick up where we left off last year, which was on a good note,” Coach Leary said. Viera tennis serving up cross training By Carl Kotala

While the Viera High boys tennis team appears to be going through a bit of a youth movement, the girls program looks to be in great shape because of all the work the players are putting in off the court. New coach Jill Mignogna has introduced cross training into the team’s practice sessions to not only help prevent injuries and build up the girl’s core fitness, but also introduce a healthy lifestyle regimen that they can use for the rest of their lives. “I can tell from two months ago, how much they have improved,” Mignogna said. “They couldn’t even make it a lap around here, and now they’re doing four laps. They’re focusing more.” Top player Tori Pinchera said she has noticed a definite change in the way she feels on the court. “In years past, I’ve had so many injuries,” the senior No. 1 player and team captain said. “This year, (cross training) is definitely helping prevent that. I feel stronger, so I can get to where I need to and be stable.” The Hawks were off to a 5-0 start thanks to the play of Pinchera and the rest of the roster, which includes junior Gabby Stanifer (No. 2), junior Ana Hall (No. 3), senior Nicole Rivera-Wynter (No. 4), junior Esha Jain (No. 5), sophomore Grace Dwight, senior Danielle

HOLY TRINITY BASEBALL When the Tigers talked about being more competitive, they weren’t kidding. Holy Trinity, which won one game last season, was off to a 3-0 start … Tony Jenkins was 1-0 with 11 strikeouts in two games and was also 6 for 6 at the plate with eight runs scored and four RBIs … Kerry Sweeney led the team with three doubles and eight RBIs … Ryan Bastien had six RBIs. Jacquel Perry had five RBIs and seven runs scored.

BASKETBALL It was another monster year for the Holy Trinity boys basketball team, but the Tigers’ season came to an end in the Class 4A regional semifinals with a 74-58 loss to Lake Highland Prep …. Holy Trinity, which beat Cocoa for the district championship, defeated Port Orange Atlantic in the regional quarterfinals as Jace Hogan scored 33

Hammond and junior Jillian Mignogna. “This year, I’m really proud of how everybody has stepped up,” Pinchera said. “They really put in the time, and I can see them getting better. Their motivation with the fitness has been awesome. It’s not like they’re just coming out here because it’s something they do to socialize. “They want to come out here and get fit. We all motivate each other.” Viera’s boys, meanwhile, were getting strong play from freshmen Nico Fuchs and Nick Granberry, who play No. 1 and 2 singles for the Hawks. Senior co-captain Darren Turner is No. 3 while senior cocaptain John Houlihan was in a

rotation for the No. 5 spot. “They’re all really talented,” coach Ryan Bauman said of his young team. “We may not be a big contender this year, but definitely next year once they get a little bit older, a little more experienced, we’ll definitely have a solid team and a good chance at regionals and, hopefully, state.” Turner, who believes the Hawks will contend in the district tournament this year, has developed an all-court game that has served him well. “I try to focus more on pressure and honestly, going to the net itself is mental pressure enough on somebody to make them mess up, or just hit it sloppy, so you can just put it away after that,” he said. Evan Enders, George Winsten, Austin Riffe, John Bacon, Alexander Miller, Brent Allard, Hojoon (Joon) Choi and Robert Morgan. For the girls, the seniors are Meg Rydson, Lily Goodlive, Sophia Goodlive, Andrea Bomalaski and Alexandra Knodel.

FOOTBALL The Tigers are in search of a new head coach after Mark Ainsley accepted the head coaching job at Heritage High School in Palm Bay. Holy Trinity went 7-4 this past season under Ainsley, reaching the district championship game against Melbourne Central Catholic and qualifying for the state playoffs for the first time since 2008. Ainsley spent three years at Holy Trinity, where he helped rejuvenate the Tigers’ program. Spring football practice is set to begin on May 1.

SOCCER Both Holy Trinity teams won their respective district titles and advanced to the Class 1A regionals semifinals. That means it’s time to say goodbye to a number of seniors who have meant a lot to both Tiger programs. For the boys, the list includes

Alec Neal had one save …The Hawks will be heading to the Sarasota Baseball Classic later this month to defend their title. In some ways, they are completely opposite. The Holy Trinity boys team is loaded with seniors in its top five spots, while the top two players on the girls team are in the sixth and seventh grade. However, there is one thing both programs have in common this season — and likely for many more seasons to come — they’re both going to be title contenders. “For districts, we have a really good chance of winning that again, which would be awesome,” senior Matt Allison said. “For regionals … I think we’ve gotten better as a team, so I think we definitely have another good chance to win that.” Last year’s boys team finally broke through, winning the district title and advancing to the regional finals. Allison is Holy Trinity’s No. 1 singles player and team captain, followed by freshman Egan Kattenberg and seniors Spencer Sperando, Nick Keiter and Matthew Ryan. Sophomore Hunter Morris and eighth-grader Saurav Ghosal are a formidable doubles team. “We’ve improved our depth,” coach Mark Harrison said. “We’ve got strength all the way down the line.” That’s especially true in doubles, where the Tigers can be particularly dangerous in a matchup of strong teams. “A lot of people count doubles out and it’s (worth) two points,” Allison said. “It’s just as important as two

toward what could be potentially a very strong season. Freshman Haley Hinz was the Hawks’ leading hitter with a .545 average. Junior Delaney Goff hit her first home run in a victory over Satellite and sophomore Sydney Brooks already had six steals in just five games. A big test will come March 5, when the Hawks try to avenge an earlier loss to Mebourne.

WRESTLING The Hawks did not have anyone reach the state tournament, but had six wrestlers qualify for the Class 3A regional tournament – Darius Darr (106 pounds), Chase Vollenweider (113), Jonathan Conlin (120), Aron Mahl (132), Jeremy Meehan (145) and Josh Lang (195) … Conlin and Lang were both first-year wrestlers who are going to improve … Meehan, who was the district runner up, finished his senior year with a 31-16 record … Vollenweider finished his season with a 35-12 record. Group gives golf new rules A local group of golfing gals found a new way to have fun with their game, recently hosting a first annual awards dinner at a member’s home. They all started out at different playing levels about four years ago, requiring a leveled playing field. “Rules are that we drive as many balls as needed to get the one we like,” explained Judy Conroy, founding member of what she

calls the WPLGA — which stands for the Waterford Place Ladies Golf Association. “If the tee box is not wherever we think it should be, we move it. A hit on the flag is an in ball, and so on. We have a great time, using colored balls that make the green look like Easter.” The awards were as memorable as the rules. There was one for the Most Unusual Stance, best caddie and most sand displaced in a sand trap. The main course reflected the game: “birdie” cacciatore, sand trap rice and “green” beans. “We have a great time,” Conroy said. VV

Teacher in-service day brings ‘humane education’ for students

by Rae Botsford

On Monday, Feb. 17, Brevard County Animal Services and Enforcement (BASE) had its first day-long Aim Humane in-service for Brevard County teachers. The purpose of the in-service was to help teachers encourage and educate their students on having compassion for

people, animals and the environment. “The buzzword is ‘prosocial change,’ ” said Virgina Hamilton, an elementary school teacher and the education director for Brevard Aiding Shelter Animals Project (ASAP). “It means the act of kindness without expecting anything in return.” Hamilton, who coordinated

the event, intends to reach students’ hearts through their existing compassion for animals. The in-service was held at BASE’s South Animal Care Center, and they had room for up to 20 teachers from Brevard schools on a first-come, first-serve basis. It was made to be a casual event — jeans were permitted — as it was an all-day affair and they spent

some time walking around the shelter. Ideally, this kind of experience wouldn’t just be a one-time event. Hamilton intends Aim Humane to be a repeated program so that other teachers will get the same opportunity. She also insists students must be exposed to humane education regularly, so BASE has books and lesson plans

National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) held its annual Block Kids Building Contest at Quest Elementary School Saturday, Feb. 1, giving 97 students through grade six inspiration to possibly “Build a Future In Construction.” The event challenged students to use their math, critical thinking and problem solving skills to create a relevant construction industry project. Contestants were required to complete the project on their own, to work within a specific amount of time and utilize approved materials only. “It was our goal that the Block Kids contest introduced children to the

co-chair and treasurer for the NAWIC Space Coast Chapter, and construction estimator and officer of Titusville general contractor David Boland, Inc. “It is my personal belief that women naturally possess many of the characteristics that are valued in this work, such as attention to detail and communication skills, but it is difficult for girls to imagine a future in the industry if they don’t first see women filling these roles.” Chartered in 1996, NAWIC Space Coast Chapter meets for networking and dinner at 6 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at the Holiday Inn Viera. Junior Thespians advance to nationals By Mike Gaffey

Thousands of middle school students from across Florida came to the King Center for the Performing Arts Feb. 7 and 8 to compete in the 2014 Florida State Junior Thespian Festival. Quest Elementary School Junior Thespian Troupe 88973, sponsored by Quest and led by sixth-grade teacher Frank Caufield, sent 15 junior thespians from the Viera community to compete in 10 events. The Quest troupe earned recognition in 10 events: four monologues, two solo vocals, one duet acting, one pantomime, one small group musical and one large group musical. The 10 events earned two “Superior” ratings and five “Excellent” ratings, with the two superior ratings qualifying them to move on to the National Thespian Festival at the University of Nebraska

It is this commitment to the performing arts that brings our small Junior Thespian Troupe such great success and recognition at the district and state level.” In order to qualify for the state festival, the students had to earn an excellent or superior rating in their individual/team events during the district competition this past December at West Shore Junior/Senior High School. Now that the State Junior Thespian Festival is over, Caufield said his Junior Thespians welcome new students to join the group of performers as they begin production of their spring musical “Nifty Fifties,” to be performed at Viera High School in May. June 23 through 28. Competition included both the performing and technical sides of the theater, with one-act plays, large and small group musicals, duet acting, pantomime, solo vocals, monologues, costume design, set design and more. “The accolades our students received at the state festival are a result of their dedication and hard work,” Caufield said. “When one considers they do not have the advantage of participating in a school drama program during the normal school day, their accomplishments are magnified in significance. “How did they do it? They wake up early each morning to arrive at school for rehearsals beginning at 6:30 a.m. and rehearse until school begins. Kids’ camp provides parents with a spring break, too By Mike Gaffey

It’s spring break. Your children are home from school, bored to tears or glued in front of the television, video game controller in their hands. What can parents do to get their kids out of the house? Viera Regional Community Center has an answer: Send your youngsters to camp. Spring Break Camp for children ages 5 to 12 is from March 24 to March 28 at

the center, 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way in Viera. Parents can send their children to camp for the week for $90, or kids can attend for one or two days at $25 a day. There’s an additional $10.50 charge for a camper to attend a movie and $3 for a pizza party. “We do a variety of activities,” said Randy Detwiler, coordinator at the community center. “We have indoor games, outdoor games, arts and crafts, sports.”

One purpose for the camp is to provide a child-care service to families who may rely on their children attending school during the work day. Schools also offer extended-day care in the morning or after school to accommodate traditional work shifts. Camp hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. There’s no one-time registration fee, Detwiler said. Past camps have drawn lots

‘Team Grace’ is brainchild of Williams Elementary Student BY KATIE PARSONS

Grace McBride is a 10-yearold with a very busy agenda. With her mom, Kelly, the Ralph M. Williams Jr. Elementary honors student has formed “Team Grace,” an outreach effort that strives to spotlight childhood disability awareness and the challenges facing families with children with disabilities. The cause has a lot of meaning for Grace. Her sister Kenna, 12, has a rare genetic disorder and has undergone 30 surgeries since the age of 2. As a result, Grace has grown up with a firsthand

perspective on what disabilities look like for families. “I want to help people understand,” she said. “I want to help raise awareness about disabilities.” Team Grace has been on Grace’s mind for several years, but finally took shape in November when she participated in her first walk-a-thon to raise money for Cerebral Palsy awareness and research. “I told Grace that she is not too young to help her sister,” said Kelly McBride. “Team Grace has given her the outlet to do that.”

Since that first event, Team Grace has raised money for several childhood health and disability organizations through walk-a-thons, dinners and other activities. In March, Grace and her mom will participate in National Pancake Day for the Children’s Miracle Network and in April, they will head to Lakeland for the Country Music Radio-a-thon to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Closer to home, Grace is heading up the “Most Wanted” project that collects items for children and families receiving inpatient care for disabilities. A card drive, miniature golf tournament and gala are also in the development stages — awareness locally. “So far we have seen a lot of support from friends and family, and we just want to get the word out to everyone,” McBride said. In Brevard, Grace and her mom have teamed up with the Family Liaison Project — an organization that has served more than 60,000 families in Brevard County over the past 20 years. The mission of the FLP is to strengthen networking between families with children with disabilities to help with life’s transitions. Training, support and collaborative communication are the main FLP objectives. Two years ago, Grace attended a Saturday “SIB Shop” sponsored by the FLP and the Center for Autism

and Related Disabilities of UCF. At the workshop, Grace met other siblings of children with disabilities. She was able to express herself and find camaraderie with other children like herself. Starting in April, Grace will be integral in bringing the SIB Shop program back to Central Brevard County and will speak to her peers at the events. “I think that these opportunities have really

empowered Grace to feel less helpless when it comes to her sister, and to help other people at the same time,” McBride said. You can see Grace speak at the Rockledge Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, April 12 during a workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more more information on Team Grace, email TeamGraceinBrevard@ yahoo.com. Thus, the “Dick” and the “Doc.” Both now live in Brevard County where they are frequently invited to perform light, entertaining and sometimes comical music at various civic organizations, private clubs, senior centers and private parties. They are

Space Coast Prayer Breakfast gets new home Last year’s launch of the Space Coast Prayer Breakfast in Viera was so successful that this year’s event has been moved to a larger convention space at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place. The scheduled keynote speaker will be David Barton of Wallbuilders fame, speaking on America’s forgotten history and heroes at the Thursday, May 1 event from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. U.S. District 8 Congressman Bill Posey will broadcast a special message from Washington, D.C. as business leaders, professionals, ministry and church leaders, and

community and civic leaders come together for this countywide event. “As Americans, we don’t get rights from our government. We give our government rights,” Congressman Posey told a crowd of about 200 at the 2013 breakfast held at the Holiday Inn Viera. “We not only have the right to come together and pray for our government and our community, it is our responsibility.” For more information or to purchase tickets for $25 per person, go to spacecoastprayerbreakfast. org. Viera ambassador living the life In real life, Carmen Vastola is an ambassador at the Viera Discovery Center, but on the cover of the new 2014 Boomer Guide, she is the Marion Ravenwood to boyfriend Gerry Dillon’s Indiana Jones persona. The glossy magazine is a sister publication to Viera Voice and Senior Life newspapers, products of Bluewater Creative Group. Vastola and Dillon appeared at the Feb. 7 Senior Safari & Wellness Walkabout at Brevard Zoo to celebrate the release of the new guide. Being selected as the cover couple during the year that the guide celebrated local, national and even international adventure for boomers and seniors was appropriate, Vastola said. “I took life so seriously for a long time. I am having a great deal of fun as a person over 55. I’ve had friends and family say they can’t believe how much fun I am having now,” Vastola said. “I think even our grown kids are a bit jealous!” To pick up a copy of the Boomer Guide, an adventurefilled directory of clubs, services, volunteer opportunities and more, go to the Viera Voice offices at 7630 N. Church’s satellite campus outgrows theater, moves to high school By Rae Botsford

East Coast Christian Center (ECCC) Viera will relocate to Viera High School from their current location in the Carmike movie theater on March 2. ECCC Viera is a satellite campus for East Coast Christian Center, an expanding church in Merritt Island. The satellite campus, which the church added in 2012, has outgrown the theater. The high school will have twice as much room, will be a better facility for children’s programs, and will allow the church to host major events. “This move to Viera High is a chance for more

500-type companies that might want to send their research up to the ISS,” O’Neill said. “The research that CASIS is responsible for brokering is research that would have Earth benefits down the road: drug therapies, consumer products technology developments that can improve life on Earth,” O’Neill said. “That’s our mission.” Anyone can submit an unsolicited proposal for research and product development, O’Neill said. “What we expect out of the unsolicited process route is a mixture of everything,” he said. “We expect students, we expect young researchers, we expect people who work for commercial companies both big and small to send their ideas.” CASIS accepts promising project ideas through unsolicited proposals or by issuing proposal requests that are evaluated by a science team, O’Neill said. CASIS’ outreach efforts to maximize the National Laboratory’s use finally bore fruit in January, as Orbital’s Cygnus capsule ferried the nonprofit’s first sponsored payload of experiments to the space station. Research on board Cygnus included physical science, life science and education-related experiments. “To that point, we had brokered a lot of out-of-thebox research opportunities, but to actually see your first bit of research go to the ISS, it shows that a lot of hard work

came to fruition and everyone was really excited from our end. But it’s also a stepping stone in moving forward as an organization,” O’Neill said. “And I think that there’s going to be a lot more great research that’s going to be heading up through the CASIS manifest.” For more information go to iss-casis.org. Got a high-flying idea for research best performed more than 200 miles above the Earth? The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space would like to hear from you. The Suntree-based nonprofit was appointed by Congress and tasked by NASA to manage, promote and broker research onboard the International Space Station U.S. National Laboratory. It is located in the Suntree Office Tower, formerly the Mercedes Building. Previously, NASA solicited grants for projects, regularly seeking proposals from scientists, entrepreneurs and students for projects that might be suitable for the lab, said Patrick O’Neill, new CASIS marketing and communications manager. Now CASIS is reaching into its own backyard for ideas from Brevardians. “This is very new as far as allowing anybody at any point in time to send their ideas,” O’Neill noted. Last month, CASIS took its message to Florida Institute of Technology for an event that attracted about 50 people, outlining benefits and opportunities for research and development projects aboard the space lab. Attendees included boomers and seniors exploring encore dream careers. “It was an opportunity for us to meet with both academic researchers as well as other individuals who are interested in utilizing the ISS,” O’Neill said. “All things considered, it was everything we wanted it to be and then some. And we look forward to doing additional types of outreach events, either at other academic institutions or at other places throughout the country.” CASIS hopes major companies send in such proposals, too. “The unsolicited route is also something we expect to get an awful lot of response from down the road because that’s the opportunity for commercial companies, the large Fortune

Marc Dobson entertained the crowd during Senior Life’s Senior Safari at Brevard Zoo, Feb. 7. By flora Reigada

Multi-talented Marc Dobson of Cocoa can play the drums, guitar and harmonica. He can also sing and dance. More than that, he is a one-man band who can do it all at the same time. “I play 9.5 instruments at once and truly rival the performance of a three-or fourpiece band,” he wrote on his website. Visitors to Senior Life’s Senior Safari held Feb. 7, at the Brevard Zoo were treated to Dobson’s performance. Head to toe, he literally “wore” his instruments: a drum “backpack” complete with straps attached to his feet. When he dances, the drums play, accompanying his guitar and harmonica. “A one-man band on steroids,” is what he calls

himself. According to his website, he began “dreaming of being a one-man band around age 14.” Getting to where he is today has been a lifelong journey. “I morphed into it from a lifetime of performing music for a living,” he wrote. At 17, he started out as a street performer. He went on to “gig on streets, arenas and every venue type between.” In March 2010, “The OneMan Band” was born. “I believe it’s taken a combination of skills I am passionate about and lucky to have,” he wrote. But Dobson is more than a performer confined to a stage. He interacts with his audience, encouraging their involvement. He did this at the Senior Safari, playing tunes by artists popular

“in the day.” These included Elvis Presley, Simon and Garfunkel, Hank Williams, Van Morrison and Tom Petty. With the Senior Safari held one week before Valentine’s Day, some couples renewed their wedding vows at the event. In keeping with this theme, Dobson asked longmarried couples the secrets of their successful unions. “When we argue, she’s always right,” said one man married 58 years. A woman married 60 years said, “It’s the Lord.” Dobson invited couples to dance to his rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Fools Rush In.” Some accepted, holding each other and swaying to the romantic song. Training your pet for desired behaviors By Ian Birkbeck, DVM Island Animal Hospital at Viera

Our pets don’t always behave the way we would like. It’s up to us as pet owners to train them, to shape their behavior to match expectations, within reason. In this article I will provide a very rudimentary introduction to pet training which may help get your rowdy dog or cat back on track. For the purposes of this article, a “behavior is anything a pet does. Pets perform thousands of behaviors a day, including barking, fetching, using the litter box, scratching the sofa, browsing the edge of the kitchen counter looking for food left too close to the edge, etc. Training is the process of affecting the frequency of these behaviors. Punishment is providing a stimulus that makes a behavior less likely. Effective use of punishment with pets can be very tricky. Take, for example, a labrador. Let’s call him Maxwell. Max is an energetic lab (is there any other kind?) that jumps up on visitors to greet them, much to the embarrassment of his owners. Yelling “no at the dog, an attempt at punishment, can be confusing, because he’s really doing multiple behaviors. Is the “no for jumping up on people, for getting petted by the visitors, for being too close to people, for being in the foyer at all? It may be hard

$1.00 OFF

Taste of the Wild Dog Food for him to figure out. It may take getting yelled at dozens of times before he gets the idea. Reinforcement is almost always a more effective teaching tool than punishment. Reinforcement is providing a stimulus (a “good dog or delicious treat) that makes a behavior more likely. In the previous example, giving Max a treat for sitting across from the entryway when visitors arrive will make him more likely to do it in the future. House training is another common training situation. What is the desired behavior? The desired behavior is a puppy doing its business outside. When the puppy does the desired behavior, reward the heck out of it. As the behavior gets reinforced, it will become more common, and you’ll save money on carpet cleanings. Timing is extremely important. The reward or punishment for a behavior needs to be almost instant. If even a few seconds have passed, the pet will not

likely make the connection between the reward or punishment and the behavior. The classic example is “showing a dog a mess it made inside. If it’s been more than three seconds or so since it made the stain, it probably has no idea why he’s getting yelled at. Similarly, a reward should come right when it does it’s business outside, not when it comes back inside. If you do the latter, it’s going to be thinking “OK, it’s good to go outside and come back in, not necessarily “ooh, my toilet is outside! If the behavior problem is more serious, like biting family members or pets fighting aggressively, it may be a good idea to call a professional for help. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations for a trainer who can help remedy a dangerous situation as quickly as possible. If you have any pet medical questions you’d like to see answered in a future column, email them to me at Dr.Ian@ IslandAnimal.com. VV

philosophies, all in the challenging name of bringing Christians together in one accord, according to a group historian. According to Tsigas, the solution is simple, but not easy. “We need to share what we have in common instead of focusing on our differences,” Tsigas said. “There is much good we can do together.” He hopes to bring clergy and their congregations together to help those less fortunate, or come alongside established, well-regarded Christian-based groups that have a structure and a plan to help people become self-sufficient. “We picked Demetri because he has a passion for bringing us together in unity, and this approach is one of the ways that has proven successful,” said group historian Rev. Dr. Paul Rosbury, spiritual leader of Seminary Covenant Community on Merritt Island. The group has faced many obstacles over time, yet remained active, he added. While many of those obstacles entailed differences in dogma, often it comes down to practicality. “Most pastors are extremely busy. It takes a lot of time to bring them together. When you do, it has to be something worth putting and keeping on their calendars,” Rosbury said. While outreach is important, prayer is powerful as well,

Tsigas said. “Imagine the good we can do if we are together, likeminded, with prayerful intention to lead our community and our country in a positive direction, protected from danger,” he said. “We each remain our distinct selves, spiritually, but we come together where we match.” The Salvation Army, located at 1080 Hickory St., provides lunch for the meetings. The Washington Nationals will play fellow MLB teams all this month at Space Coast Stadium.

The Washington Nationals take on the hottest teams in Major League Baseball in our own backyard this month as spring training fires up at Space Coast Stadium. Teams to appear at home games include the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros and Miami Marlins. The majority of the home games will be at 1:05 p.m., with two evening games at 6:05 p.m. against the Astros on March 10 and 19. Gates open an hour before game start.

vieravoice.com

Local community leaders are urging support and attendance of the games. The team is in negotiations with other communities in Florida. Despite the recent collapse of proposals for other sites, the Nationals have enlisted the help of former U.S. congressman Mark Foley to help find a potential spring training home in Palm Beach County. For more scheduling information or to purchase tickets, go to washington. nationals.mlb.com. VV

Bernie Hutten is turning 104, and his whole Grand Isle neighborhood in Viera is invited to celebrate. In mid-March, Hutten’s neighbor Wayne Rankin and three other people will throw him the biggest birthday party he’s ever had. In previous years, Hutten has invited a number of people to Tuscany Grill for his birthday, but now he’s inviting the entire Grand Isle community and no restaurant is large enough. “This year we’re taking over our clubhouse,” said Rankin. There are 336 homes in the neighborhood, and they’re expecting a good turnout to the open house-style event. “That’s a whopping amount of people.” Rankin had the idea for the party last October. He knows it’s special for a man to turn 104 years old, but he also sees the value of the whole community coming together. “Not everybody goes to the clubhouse, not everybody knows each other. I guess it’s just the opportunity to come and meet the couple that everybody’s heard about,” he said. Hutten used to play golf five days a week, until a hip replacement at age 97 put him out of commission. Hutten’s wife, Helen, is 91 years old, and she golfs every week and participates in tournaments. The still-lively couple celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day. “The theme for the evening is ‘Young at Heart,’ and specifically that song for one reason,” Rankin said. “It ends with a line, ‘If you should survive to 105.’ And this man will. We’re all convinced that he will.” For more information, call 321-426-4704 any day after 1 p.m.VV

The Sunflower House, a service of Aging Matters in Brevard, is currently seeking several specific donations for its medical equipment bank. The bank’s needs change based on requests that come in, and right now they need wheelchairs, walkers with seats, canes and shower chairs. The Sunflower House starts requesting donations when they are having difficulty meeting the demand for certain items. “Walkers with seats are super, super popular,” said Jeanne Hakkila-Wills, the vice president of mission advancement for Aging Matters in Brevard. The donation-based program lends equipment to individuals age 60 and older, or to their caregivers, when they can’t afford to purchase it themselves. The bank is always accepting donations, and when people call offering walkers, canes, bedside commodes and other things, the Sunflower House decides whether it’s something they can use. “We want to promote and maintain independence,” said HakkilaWills. She said their goal is to keep seniors happy, healthy, safe and in their homes. “It’s grab bars, it’s nutrition, it’s ramps, it’s anything we can do to help you maintain that quality of life.” Sunflower House is located in the Merritt Square Mall. To make an appointment to drop off or pick up equipment, call 321-452-4341. VV
