The love of drama instilled early on, for two Brevard County students, has now resulted in The Viera Studio For the Performing Arts opening May 2. Before going to New York City to pursue careers in the arts, founders Monica ToroLisciandro and Jonathan McFadden met in Suntree Elementary School and got early instruction in drama at Johnson Junior High School in Melbourne. “It was in New York when we started talking about opening something like this. We’re focusing on the whole child and how to apply these skills to their everyday life,’’ McFadden said. Toro-Lisciandro received a bachelor of arts with concentrations in theatre performance and theatre education at the prestigious theatre university, Marymount Manhattan College. Helping those willing to work hard to help themselves is the thought behind the 3rd annual charity golf tournament sponsored by the 56-member Habitat for Humanity and National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) Space Coast. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Friday, May 18 at Suntree Country Club. Registration deadline for players is May 5. “Last year we had a good crowd but we’re looking to double our efforts this year,’’ said event Chairman Joseph Cianchetti. “The money is going to be put to good use and is tax deductible. This tournament shows that we are committed to the community that we live in. When it started, we wanted more recognition as to what we (NAIFA) do for our charity and the community. We thought donating it to Habitat for Humanity was a natural fit for us.” He said that the sponsors have tried to improve on the benefits offered to participants each year, in an effort to boost the amount raised and donated to Habitat. This year’s benefits include: • Grand prize $20,000 • All golfers receive a two-night hotel stay (no time share or sales pitch) and a $75 gift Calloway gift card Par 3 hole-in-one prizes include: • A new Cadillac from Murphy Cadillac • A new golf cart from Pro Golf Car • A five-day/four-night cruise for two to the Caribbean. • Two round trip airline tickets to anywhere in the continental United States. • An electronic package choice between an iPod Touch, Playstation 3 or 32-inch flat panel TV. “We have 120 slots for golfers and we’d like to bring new golfers into play this year,’’ Cianchetti said. NAIFA Spacecoast member Marvin Shelton said that the event will build as long as large corporate sponsors can be attracted. “The most important thing is we’re trying to get major sponsorships and that’s hard to come by. We’re looking for anchor sponsors and we want to generate interest this year for next year’s event,’’ he said. The cost is $450 for a foursome, $125 for an individual. Greater Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC) Sunshine Juniorettes volunteered at the Brevard Zoo’s EcoFair on March 17 and demonstrated the oyster mat project to visitors. Early the next morning, they were at the Brevard Community College Melbourne Campus to volunteer at the Habitat for Humanity Strawberry Festival, and on Saturday, March 24, they helped with craft activities during Kid Fest 2012 at Viera High School.
The Sunshine Juniorettes are sponsored by the GFWC Viera Woman’s Club, which is part of the oldest and largest organization of volunteer women in the world. The young women receive community service credit for the hours they volunteer, which can be applied toward academic scholarships in some cases. Juniorette clubs are comprised of middle and high school-aged young women working to meet the needs of their communities. There are currently 22 Juniorette clubs in the state
of Florida. The Sunshine Juniorettes meet monthly in Viera. All middle and high school girls living in Viera or within a comfortable driving distance are welcome to join. Membership is $25 per year and the only requirements are they must be interested in community service activities, learning leadership skills and having fun. Someone Special Gabrielle “Gabe” Ford
Suntree Country Club elects new board directors and officers
Words to Live by:
If you judge others, you are not defining them, you are defining yourself. When Gabrielle “Gabe” Ford was 12, she developed a neurological disorder that made walking difficult. As a result of her awkward gait, children at school bullied her, even during Project Graduation. Her ataxia means she must use a wheelchair, but that does not inhibit her independence. For years, she silently suffered the indignity of being bullied until she connected with a coonhound named Izzy who helped her through some of her darkest moments. When Izzy became ill, Gabe found the voice she needed to reach outside of her own pain to help others. Today, the author of Still Dancing is a motivational speaker and travels with Dinah, Izzy’s cousin, to advocate against bullying. Read her full story at gabeandizzy.com. What is your absolute essential must-have in your refrigerator? Bottled water
How do you eat an Oreo? Either I shove the whole thing in my mouth or bite it in half. My sister taught me to put peanut butter on it, sometimes.
What is your greatest pet p peeve? People who gripe and complain about everything.
Tell us something about yourself that might surprise casual acquaintances. I went white water rafting on the Colorado River for five days on a level-4 rapid. What historical event do you wish you could have witnessed firsthand? The collapse of the Berlin Wall.
What is your favorite movie line? “The heart doesn’t choose who it loves.”
If you could invite any historical figure, from any era to your home, who would you invite? Princess Diana. We could talk about the charities and causes she has helped so I can help, too. Plus we would play “dress up.” If money weren’t an issue, what would you do for the rest of your life? I love to travel so I’d travel worldwide. I’d help people and animals with things they are in need of, such as money, food and shelter.
When was the last time you said “I am glad I don’t have that job”? While watching the TV show Deadliest Catch.
Would you volunteer to be one of the first colonists on Mars if it meant you could never return to earth? No. I haven’t explored this planet enough.
At its annual meeting on March 19, Suntree Country Club equity members elected three new directors to its board. Directors Dr. Richard “Dick” Baney, John Banks and Briggs Kilborne accepted three-year terms through March 2015. Dr. Baney practiced internal medicine at MIMA for 20 years, served as medical director for Holmes Regional and CEO of HealthFirst Physicians Group. He has been a Florida Tech trustee for 26 years and was founding director and chairman at Reliance Bank and Bank Brevard, which is now BankFirst. After 23 years with First Union/Wachovia, John Banks retired as area president in 2006. He has also served as director for various nonprofit organizations, including United Way of Brevard, Brevard Community College Foundation,
What do you think is the best invention of all time? The wheelchair!
If you could fill the Trojan Horse with anything other than Greek soldiers, what would you use? Blueberries. They are loaded in antioxidants. I eat them by the handfuls and a pint at a time. What do you wish you still had from your childhood? Not worrying about “real life” things. VV

Snowbirds migration
Association Living By Frank Kneiser CMCA, AMS, PCAM
Most snowbirds are on their way to the northern respite by the end of May. Seasoned part-time residents will have a set routine as they prepare their Brevard homes for departure. Veteran snowbirds know that the exodus means more than just packing a bag and locking the doors. Here are some tips that may be helpful. Before leaving, there are precautions necessary no matter what type of property you have. One of the best things you can do is find a reliable house sitter. This would be someone who comes into your home on a regular basis while you are away. There are professional companies that offer this type of service or you may be fortunate enough to have
a reliable friend or neighbor. Reliability is the key because the welfare of your Florida home depends on regular, knowledgeable checkups. An advantage of a professional company is that they usually have a cadre of vendors ready to step in and resolve emergencies that may occur. Also, the pros normally are in a better position to assess the situation and react quickly to bring in the appropriate repair company. Whether you use a professional or go with a friend or relative, be sure you have a clear understanding of what you would like accomplished during the inspections and the parameters of their actions without getting approval from you. The understanding
should be in writing. It may not be as formal with a friend or relative as with a professional. However, having a written document may avoid relationship problems with friends or relatives. Be sure there is a list of items you want covered during the inspections. Provide a list of all of your regular vendors who are familiar with your home. Also, leave clear and concise contact information for reaching you. Give your house sitter backup contacts in case you are not available and let them know of any travel plans you may have that could prevent access. Finally, be aware that the Brevard Sheriff’s Department will provide periodic drive-bys in your
absence if you alert them to your vacancy. This is minimal protection in the overall scheme of things, as the deputy will not be going inside your home. It is a lot easier to be proactive rather than reactive. VV
It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his Community Association Manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@suntreeflorida.com.

The Suntree Slammers, a team of 11- and 12-year-old Little Leaguers, discovered life is more than baseball when Garrett Lamp approached the team. Lamp is the Viera organizer of St. Baldrick’s Children’s Cancer Research Foundation. The team had been raising money to play in Cooperstown, N.Y., in June, but decided to raise money in support of St. Baldrick’s. All
the players, some brothers, most of their fathers and all of the team’s coaches shaved their heads on March 17 at The Avenue Viera. Their efforts generated $5,898 toward the more than $150,000 raised that day. For more information, or to donate to help the Suntree Slammers make it to New York this summer, call 321-591-8243. VV

Hope Lutheran Church Pastor Mark Moreno leads his congregation in releasing butterflies on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012. By Rosemary H. Lynn
On April 8, Hope Lutheran Church celebrated the Christian belief that Jesus rose to heaven on Easter Sunday with an unusual ceremony. Pastor Mark Moreno led his flock outside to the grounds surrounding the church where everyone would have a chance to release a butterfly into the morning sky. Between services, children and adults received tiny envelopes, each containing a small painted lady butterfly. Moreno explained how to release the delicate insects and at the count of five, everyone opened their envelopes carefully and the butterflies fluttered into the air around them. Some of the butterflies were reluctant to

leave their cozy hideaway in the corner of the envelope and others perched in the parishioners’ opened palms before taking flight. According to Moreno, there were about 200 butterflies for the service. He said, “I got the idea to begin this annual tradition from a friend who is a minister at a church out of state. I thought it was the perfect reflection of the meaning of Easter Sunday.” The butterflies were purchased online and arrived safely for their special flight. Hope Lutheran has a congregation of approximately 125 people, but on Easter Sunday, there were many visitors attending, as well. For more information, call Pastor Mark Moreno at 321-242-1610. VV

Also on staff is Carolyn Barone, an 18-year veteran teacher from the School of Performing Arts at Gardendale Elementary Magnet School. The cost for weekly classes starts at $35 per month for children with discounts for multiple classes. There is no registration but all students must purchase a T-shirt to be worn at all related classes and events. The studio also offers eCoaching, which allows students to video chat with one of the experienced
professionals for 15 or 30 minutes for advice and feedback. Former Johnson Junior High School drama teacher, now Viera High School Principal Jim Hickey, well remembers a couple of star students who dreamed big. “We had something magical then for a few years. The benefit was as much for us teachers as it was for the students. I always said that one day I’ll be working for them. It’s great to have them back and to see that they got into drama. They’ll do fine,’’ Hickey said. Scrabble club offers friendly competition
VIERA VOICE Rosemary H. Lynn
Players concentrate on their tiles as they play scrabble at the Indian Oaks Community Center in Rockledge, Fla. on April 10, 2012. By Rosemary H. Lynn
Christine Engle, acting director for the Rockledge Scrabble Club, is excited about the small club that has attracted game enthusiasts from all over the county. Meeting once a week on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at the Indian Oaks Community Center off Barnes Boulevard, players come to share their love of words and compete against one another in a friendly atmosphere. There are currently about
10 regular members but Engle believes when more people hear about the club, they will be encouraged to investigate. They play one on one, using a chess timer, with a total of 25 minutes each, to play a round. They utilize the official National Scrabble Association rules and dictionary. Games are fast paced. Each winner of a round plays against another winner of a two-person team. This goes on for almost three hours every Tuesday.
There are many Scrabble clubs in the United States in just about every state and every city. National Tournaments are held at least once a year. Two years ago, a national tournament was held in Orlando. Experts, intermediates and beginners are invited to attend. Scrabble is a mentally stimulating game that offers a challenging and entertaining way for people with memory and cognizance issues. It is one of the best ways to encourage spelling and vocabulary excellence in young people as well as the senior population. “We really want to encourage people to join who love to play the game and know the basic rules. Although we have a good time together, we take our challenges quite seriously,” Engle said. “But of course we want our members to have fun, and they do.” For information, contact Engle at 321-637-0457 or cengle27@gmail.com. Lt. Tyler Cox put another notch in Brevard County’s 9/11 belt last month when the Brevard County Fire Rescue planner brought to Viera a famous fire engine used in response to the national and world tragedy. Fire Department of New York’s Rescue 4 unit is now a mobile educational tool, historical artifact and memorial. “It was a lot of hard work, with many ups and downs and much turmoil and elation among all the team members in achieving this great honor,” said Cox, who also lead the project to obtain a chunk of the World Trade Center wreckage and raise money to design and
build a memorial to display it at Station 48 in Viera. Rescue 4 was stationed at Station 48 for two weeks and was driven in the April 14 Welcome Home Veterans Parade before its return to New York City. The venture was in partnership with the Remembrance Rescue Project, a nonprofit organization created by firefighters to preserve awareness of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Additionally, the project provides support to children of fallen firefighters throughout the United States, while also working to restore Rescue 4. The historical rescue vehicle was stationed in Queens and carried eight highly-trained
firefighters to the site of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Today, while not an FDNY operation, Rescue 4 is the only fire apparatus from that event operating outside New York City. “It is important for each of us to remember what an important day in our nation’s history 9/11 was and the sacrifices that were made by so many people, including the 343 brother firefighters who were lost, eight of whom rode on this very truck,” Cox said. “We are honored to be a host department for Rescue 4 and bring this piece of history to our community.” For more information, visit fdnyrescue4.com. The Last Chance Sanctuary is still soliciting recipes to complete a cookbook for a shelter fundraiser. Coordinator Michelle Kerr said, “As a fun way to raise money to help our feline friends, we thought it may be nice to gather recipes and put them together in a cookbook which would make the perfect gift.” The deadline for submitting recipes is May 4, but the Last Chance Sanctuary may extend the deadline if they don’t have enough recipes. The cookbooks will be

available for purchase for $10 at the Sanctuary’s adoption events at Petsmart and Petco. Proceeds from the sale of the cookbooks will be used to fund TNR (trap, neuter, release) of the many local feral cats. TTNR helps the community by stabilizing the population of the feral colony and, over time, reducing it. Holy Trinity welcomes Sacred Harp singing By George White
Sweet sounds of authentic Sacred Harp American hymns filled both campuses of Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy in Melbourne April 13 and 14 during a two-day public event that focused on the musical art form. Named for the human voice, Sacred Harp is used to describe a style of hymn singing once prevalent in early America and still existing today in rural pockets.
The action kicked off April 13 with the Florida premiere of Awake, My Soul, a documentary film and discussion about the Sacred Harp presented by Atlanta filmmakers, Matt and Erica Hinton, at the school’s Scott Center for Worship and Performing Arts. In a related event, Georgia ethnomusicologist Jesse Karlsberg taught Sacred Harp singing school workshops on Friday and Saturday that outgrew the chapel and had to be moved

to the original church. “We are happy and proud to be hosting genuine Sacred Harp singing at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy,” said Lorie Wacaster, Holy Trinity Academy’s director of chorus and orchestra. The large turnout for the singing school, including several participants from out of town, was welcome in that it spread the message or brought back memories about this unique religious music, according to Wacaster. “They really seemed to enjoy it. For some of them, they remember going to church and singing like this when they were kids. It sounds good and it’s different than our modern
music,’’ she said. Learning Sacred Harp singing seemed easy even for beginners through the instruction of Karlsberg. He is active as a teacher, composer, organizer and singer in the Sacred Harp singing community in the Southeastern United States and around the world. He is the chairman of the Georgia State Sacred Harp Singing Convention and vice president of the Sacred Harp Publishing Company, the organization that publishes the songbook, “The Sacred Harp”. Karlsberg has been an instructor at Camp Fasola, an annual Sacred Harp singing school in Alabama, since 2007. He has taught Sacred
Harp singing schools in a dozen states, as well as in Poland, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. The presentation may have been one of the first times Sacred Harp music has been performed in Central Florida but Wacaster said she is hoping it is not the last. “We’re looking to establish a monthly singing of Sacred Harp so we can keep this style of music alive,’’ she said. The Sacred Harp event at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy is being made possible through a $3,825 grant from the Community Foundation for Brevard. Cinco de Mayo celebration at Alamo Mexican Kitchen By George White
Every year, for the past 45 years, the Alamo Mexican Kitchen is packed on May 5 for the Cinco de Mayo celebration and this year is not going to be different, according to manager Debi Enriquez. “We’re going to have the Tropical Fusion Band playing Latin music inside and there will be special prizes. That’s a busy day for us and we open an hour early, at 4 p.m.,’’ she said. Normal hours are from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and closing at 10 p.m. on weekends. The restaurant is open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays and is closed on Mondays. The menu at the Alamo Mexican Kitchen explains how the restaurant—the first Mexican restaurant in Brevard County—has been able to stay in business for 45 years. It states: “The history . . . and the story of the Enriquez family cannot be separated. Where there is one there is the other.” The history begins at the space program testing ground in White Sands, New Mexico, where Alberto Enriquez and his wife Irene faced an important decision. “When that (program) ended, they gave him a choice of where

to live between California, Houston, Mississippi and Florida. We chose Florida,’’ said Irene Enriquez. She said that the restaurant was founded in May 1967 in a former gift shop and snack bar. Back rooms were used for storage and to hand-make corn tortillas, which were hard to find on the Space Coast back then. “It was a lot of work,’’ she said. Now those rooms are used for seating. Irene Enriquez’ mother was brought in at the start to help teach the cooks the authentic recipes that had been handed down for generations. An
original partner with restaurant experience helped the couple learn the business. “We knew we wanted to open a restaurant but we had no knowledge of the restaurant business,’’ she said. The restaurant now seats around 190 and those seats are often filled with members of a loyal customer base with only a few Latinos actually from Mexico, according to Irene Enriquez. “We’ve been around so long that now we’re seeing the fourth generation. The parents came in, their kids came in, they had kids and now their kids are coming,’’
she said. And, like those customers, the large and growing number of Enriquez family members makes the business special. “They are the ones who really care and want to maintain the culture and recipes. They have been a tremendous help,’’ she said. Starting from Alberto and Irene, next are their children, Albert Jr., Patsy, Carrie, Jannette and Debi, followed by grandchildren Trish, Melissa, Maria, Michael, Christina and Erika, and great grandchildren Jake, Torre, Nicolas, Chloe, Meredith and Jackson. “And since we had the menus printed, there now is Cooper and another on the way,’’ Irene Enriquez said. The restaurant business can be a bit hectic at times, but Irene Enriquez said she wouldn’t have it any other way. “This is my life, my kids are my life. Second to that is the restaurant. And we have such great clientele. It’s like one big happy family. We greet each other with hugs. Sometimes when a regular customer misses a week or two we start getting worried,” she said. “We don’t have the most elegant place but people who have eaten Mexican all over
say we have the best food and margaritas. Sometimes they come straight from the airport. And, no matter where else they go, they can’t find the Irene Special. It’s similar to a Mexican pizza starting with a fried shell with refried beans, whatever filling they want, and topped with cheese and garnished with lettuce and tomato. People ask for The Irene,’’ she said. The Alamo Mexican Kitchen is located at 5885 on U.S. 1 in Rockledge. For more information, call 321-632-2549. VV

The day was filled with health education stations, sports and games, with plenty of sunscreen to protect the skin during the many hours of outdoor activities. “Exercise is the best way to burn off stress, but we must also remember to drink lots of water, make healthy food choices and get plenty of sleep to be our best each day, said FCAT fitness day coordinator and school coach Kay MacDonald. Manatee Elementary School student is a soccer star By Chance Hall
Johnnie-Joy “JJ” Bryant started playing soccer at 5 years old in Hawaii. When her family moved to the area in 2006, she started playing at the Rockledge Soccer Club. She was chosen to play on a Rockledge boys’ competitive soccer team when she was 9, where she played for two years. During that time she was invited to guest-play on older girls’ teams frequently. While playing on the boys team at a tournament, she was asked to guest-play in a Disney tournament for an Orlando soccer club. She now plays for the FC (Football
Club) America girls under-12 team called FEAR and has had a great season. The team has done well in tournament play, both here in Florida and on the travel team. She wears double zero, and is known as one of the fastest players on the team. Bryant has been picked up for the Olympic Development Program (ODP) this year, and will attend two ODP Team Training Camps at Auburndale, Fla. in May and June. Also, she has been selected to attend the ODP Region III Camp at The University of Montevallo, in Montevallo, Ala. the end of June. At the Region III camp,
she will be placed on the Florida ODP Team. The 12-year-old athlete also has been invited to attend the U.S. Soccer Training Center next month in Tampa, making the Manatee Elementary School student one of the youngest players at the center. She said, “I am so happy to be attending the U.S. National training camp. My dream is to one day play on a U.S. National team, representing my country. After that, I hope to become a professional soccer player.” For more information, visit fcamerica.org. VV

Breeden was 6-6 on the season, while Callinan and Seibert were both 6-1 with a 1.11 ERA. “There’s probably not another team that can put three pitchers out there (like

in 2011, arriving in August and leading Viera to a 4-6 record, clearly it was just a building block for what will hopefully be a more successful 2012 once he has a chance to install his system. “I’m hoping this year we will have everything that we can do in, and we won’t be so one-dimensional,” Mays said. “The passing game will be better this year.” As for starting spots, they’re all up for grabs. “This year, every spot is open and we will play the best players at that spot,” Mays said. That’s especially true at quarterback, where sophomores Caleb McDaniel and Cody Dentmon, along with freshman Devin Lormand, will compete to see who leads Viera next season. The offensive line should be a strength for Viera with returning starters Zach Schwarz, Hunter Prussel,

Hawks ready for start of spring football workouts By Carl Kotala
By the time Kevin Mays was hired last season, spring football practice was a distant memory. However, despite not being able to fully implement his system, he led the Viera High Hawks to the most wins (four) in school history. Come May 1, when the Hawks officially begin spring practice, Mays will get a chance to get everything set up just the way he wants it. “We started in January (with weight lifting and conditioning),” Mays said. “I think it was new to these kids, but they’ve responded well. They worked hard. We’ve elevated our level a decent amount.” Viera will host New Smyrna Beach in its spring game on May 25 at 7 p.m. While Mays and his staff are certainly proud of what they were able to accomplish

Strong finish to Viera track team’s season
The Viera High girls team advanced to the 4A regional finals, knocking off Spanish River (Boca Raton) 4-3 in the first round before losing to West Boca Raton. Earlier, the Hawks won the Cape Coast Conference championship and dominated district play, winning 21 of 22 matches and avenging an earlier loss to Vero Beach. Stephanie and Dana Hatchett led the way. Viera’s boys team advanced to the regionals, but lost to Spanish River. Congratulations to both teams. VV

With the Class 4A track and field state meet set to take place May 5 at the University of North Florida, it’s still too early to tell whether the Viera High Hawks will be represented. Either way, however, it’s been a successful season for the young Hawks. “I’m very pleased,” Viera boys coach Dave Costello said. “We have young kids, but they’ve been competitive.” Senior Jon Campbell won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the Cape Coast Conference championships, while senior Nick Howorth won the 800 meters. Unfortunately, another senior, Justin Gorbea, pulled up in the 400 meters with a leg injury. Gorbea, Kanisius Ferguson, Zach Weir and Andrew Grubbs are all headed to Webber University next season, while Howorth is going to the Coast Guard Academy and Campbell will try to walk on at Florida State. April 18, with the top four finishers moving on to the Class 4A regionals, which were set for April 25-27. On the girls’ side, the Hawks were expecting strong performances from senior Hazel Lockard in the 330 hurdles and Fendi Johnson in the 200. The Hawks’ 4x400 relay team (Lockard, Johnson, Andrea Wilson and Cierra Fisher) was also expected to be a contender, along with Vianca Alfonso in the shot put. Shot putter Kevin Mall, who missed most of the season recovering from a broken fibula, returned to action for the boys midway through April, while Jackie Stengel (torn ACL) came back to run the girls’ 400 meters and serve as an alternate on the 4x400 relay. Among the school records set this season were Gorbea in the 100m (10.6), 200 (21.9) and 400 (48.9); Grubbs in the boys’ pole vault (13-1); Carolyn Kruzekamp in the discus (97-2) and Kendall Hester in the girls’ pole vault (9-0). Viera High School seniors (L-R): Kaitlin Thompson, Kamy Jesse, Brittany Doyle, Emily Fisher, Autumn Jones, Sarah Torabi, Nikki Michel and Mari Andrews were among 60 VHS choral students to win top prizes on March 31, 2012 at the World Strides Heritage Performance festival in Orlando. There’s an old joke about a New Yorker stopped on the street and asked how to get to Carnegie Hall. “Practice, practice, practice,” came the reply. The Viera High School girls’ chorus, which is called Viera Voice, has taken that advice to heart and it may lead them to the iconic locale this summer. Viera Voice won the March 31 World Strides Heritage Performance festival in
Orlando, which included tutelage and practice under Dr. Phillips School of the Arts choir director Andrew Minear. With 23 choirs attending the awards ceremony, Viera Voice advanced women’s choir won first place in advanced division, and its combined intermediate and advanced choir won second place in its division. “The judges were floored by their performances,” said Viera Voice director Abigail Crane. “One of the judges came up after the advanced choir performed and bowed before them, sharing tips on how they can take their performances to the next level. These girls are so teachable and willing to try new things. I am beyond proud.” Three of the attending choirs received an invitation to be part of the National Youth Choir at Carnegie Hall in New York City over the summer. Two of the three choirs were the Viera Voice choruses, the
two that won first and second places in their divisions. “Participation is pending approval by the school and district,” Crane said. She added that if the trip is a go with fundraising and family permissions, it will be a special delight for her. The Carnegie Hall choir will be led by Dr. Lynne Gackle, a professor at Baylor University known for her research and teaching on changing and developing the female performer’s voice from the trill of girlhood to the rich tones of womanhood. While Crane was growing up, Gackle was her choir director for 11 years as a member of the Gulf Coast Youth Choir in Tampa. Gackle was founder and artistic director of that choir, made up of 300 students from five counties. For more information, or to provide support for the trip, call Crane at 813-695-1640 or email vierachoir@gmail.com. VV
The Viera High School choral group, Viera Voice, will perform a free spring concert in the VHS auditorium, 6103 Stadium Pkwy. Call 813-695-1640 for more information.

Audition for the award-winning VHS Winter Guard
Viera Voice Photo
The Viera High School Winter Guard earned gold medals at Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit on March 31, 2012.
The Viera High School Winter Guard earned gold medals at Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit in March. The competition took place in Daytona Beach. Director of Guards Destiny Guerra said, “These kids worked so incredibly hard. I’m so proud of them.” The guards’ performance of their 2012 show entitled Say featured a unique soundtrack of all team members thoughts on life, change, bullying and teamwork, earning VHS first place and making the team the 2012 Scholastic Class AA Paradigm Division Champions. This is the second year Viera High School has had a winter guard. The team’s awards keep mounting, with an FFCC Division Promotion, three trophies, two fan-favorite shows, culminating with championship gold medals. This growing team is accepting new talent for the 20122013 school year and will have open auditions on May 12 at the VHS Gym. No experience is necessary. Viera High School will host sports camps in June The camps are open to students who will be entering grades 3 through 8. Josh Sykes is the Hawks’ boys basketball coach.
Kevin Mays is the head football coach at Viera High. By Carl Kotala
The first Viera Football camp is set for June 4 through 8 at the Viera High School practice and game fields. The camp is open to students who will be entering grades 3 through 8. It’s sponsored by the Brevard Bulls and will be put on by Hawks’ coach Kevin Mays, his staff and current and former players. The cost is $135 with some of the proceeds going back to the Viera High School football program. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 8, when there will be an awards ceremony. Viera’s popular basketball camp for boys and girls entering grades 3 through 8 will take place June 11 through 15 at the school’s gymnasium. The cost is also $135 and will be led by Hawks’ boys coach Josh
Sykes. That camp will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 15, where another awards ceremony will take place. According to Mays, the idea behind his camp is to give younger children something to do this summer, while also teaching them the fundamentals of the game that could ultimately help the Hawks as those players get older. “When I was at the other high schools that I’ve worked at, we always had a camp at those schools,” he said. “I was surprised that this area didn’t offer one. They have so much success with the basketball camp. I figured: let’s try to have a football camp and see if we can get that part of it rolling here, give the kids in the community a chance to know us, learn some fundamentals, have a good time and give them something to do besides sit at home.”
A mouth guard is mandatory for all football campers. Other dress requirements include shorts, a provided camp shirt, socks, towel, football cleats and tennis shoes, along with a pen or pencil and a notepad. Mays said campers will get their work in on the field—including some competitions—but there will also be some instruction given on the whiteboard, as well as game film analysis. “It’s not going to be real rigorous,” Mays said. “It’s allowing them to have fun while also learning the fundamentals.” For more information on the football camp, contact Mays at mays.kevin@ brevardschools.com or Todd Schaneville at todd. schaneville@earthlink.net. For more information on the basketball camp, email sykes. josh@brevardschools.com. VV

Sydney Novak, a 6th grader at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, recently organized a school-wide fundraiser for the Central Brevard Humane Society. She asked some friends to help her and her sister decorate shoe boxes to be set out in each of 18 classrooms for one week. Students were encouraged to bring in loose change and put it in their classrooms’ shoe boxes. The classroom that raised the most funds was treated to a cookie-cake celebration. In one week, her Pennies for Puppies, Coins for Kitties campaign raised $501.11 for the Central Brevard Humane Society. Preparations ready for next LDA Tour event
Duran Golf Club will host the next Long Drivers of America (LDA) tour event, the Alligator Alley Shootout May 4 and 5. Duran Golf Club is the LDA’s second of seven stops on the tour. The Tour will bring to the Space Coast some of the longest and most extreme professional drivers known to the game of golf. On Saturday, May 4, teams of four amateurs will pair with one of the long driver professionals to compete against other teams in a high-intensity scramble on the Championship Course. “We are very excited to have the LDA Tour here,” said David Tomczak, Duran’s general manager, “and to host such a unique event here on the Space Coast.” The event continues on Sunday, May 5 with the Long Drive Competition on the range when professional drivers compete for

cash and the title. In addition, valuable points toward the seasonending LDA Tour Championship and exemptions to World Finals in October are at stake. To register for this event, visit durangolf.com. Entry fee includes Thursday night pairing party, Saturday’s breakfast and lunch, tee gift, prizes and range balls.
Hospitality industry recognized
During the months of May through October, Duran Golf Club will extend special discounted rates to all employees of the Space Coast’s hospitality industry. Employees of Brevard County restaurants, golf courses, hotels, bars and other area attractions may play the 18-hole championship course for free on Mondays, with discounted rates up to 35 percent off the regular green and cart fee rate Tuesday through Thursday. A cart is required for all play. As an additional bonus, up to three guests of these employees will be able to play at the same rate. Golfers must present valid proof of employment to receive the special rate. Proof of employment includes current paystub, from April to October only, or a written statement from the employee’s general or sales manager on company letterhead with a business card attached. Other means of identification must be provided at time of check in. It is highly recommended that golfers reserve a tee time at least 48 hours in advance. David Tomczak, general manager of Duran, said, “We recognize the impact that the hospitality industry has on the Space Coast’s economy, and more importantly, the people that are managing and operating the hospitality facilities. Especially in a tough economy, it is nice to be able to offer a break to these hardworking individuals.” For more information on Duran Golf Club, visit durangolf.com, or call 321-504-7776. VV

Prominent Professional Ken Roder
Fishing seminar hooks local women
VIERA VOICE photo
Locals listen to tips at the most recent Florida Sportswoman fishing seminar at Strike-Zone. The seminar has gathered both men and women of all ages, from cities across the county, including Viera and Suntree, to help one another get more interested in the sport of fishing. April 18, 2012. By Angela Smith
Words to Live by:
Treat others the way you want to be treated. Born in Wisconsin, Ken Roder moved to Arizona after he graduated from high school. In 1991, he moved to Brevard County. After selling another business, he started Viera Power Washing because he felt most homeowners in the Viera/Suntree area realize they live in a beautiful part of Brevard and tend to take pride in the way they care for their homes. He wanted to be a part of keeping the area homes beautiful.
His thoughts
What is your pet peeve? Texting and talking on the phone while driving. What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done? I got caught offshore about 100 miles out during a Category 1 hurricane. It was scary. What is unique about your family? My wife and I both came from very large families but have no kids. We both married late in life and both for the first time.
If you could be anyone else for one day, who would it be? Tom Watson. He’s admired and respected as much for his kindness off the golf course as he is for his game on the golf course. I like that. What would you most like to learn in your lifetime? To be happy.
If you had a year off with pay, what would you do? I’d practice and play as much golf as I could.
30
What kinds of photos are on your phone? A picture of my wife and some photos of property we own in North Carolina.
What do you consider the best invention during your lifetime? The Internet. How would your friends describe you to someone you have not met? Good guy, hard worker maybe a little opinionated.
If unexpected guests show up at your door and you don’t have much food or drink in the house, what do you do? We’d share what we have or, if they were friends, we’d take them out to dinner. What is the most valuable life lesson you learned? Not to take myself too seriously. I’m still learning. Do you have a tip for other business people? Remember your clients’ or customers’ names. VV

For local Brittney Novalsky, weekends are packed with fishing and enjoying the outdoors, and she’s not alone. With the help of Novalsky and a series of fishing seminars she’s hosting with Strike-Zone, more Brevard women are finding time to pick up a fishing pole to get in touch with nature. “I started the seminar as a way for women to get the information they need about fishing, while in a comfortable setting for a welcoming experience, Novalsky said. “I felt like the more I was out on the water, I noticed how few women there were involved and I hope this will change that. Novalsky, also known as Florida Sportswoman, has been empowering women and young girls to get involved with the sport, an activity that’s no longer considered strictly a man’s sport. “I think once all of us come together at the seminars, we can all look around and realize it’s not just me and that there are friendships and bonds developing among the women, Becky, Nick and Mike McAleenan of Rockledge, FL, at their home on April 16,2012, talk about their passion for volunteer work. By Rosemary H. Lynn
For Becky and Mike McAleenan of Rockledge, volunteering is not something they just choose to do. It is something they have to do. They believe that every able-bodied citizen should always look for opportunities to help others and they try to set an example by doing exactly that. For the past several years, they have been exceptionally involved in volunteer activities such as raising funds for cancer research, boy scouting and even robotics for children. Mike, a retired Air Force officer, holds down a full time job at Kennedy Space Center and spends three or four days a week, after work, helping plan fundraising activities, work with the 38 boys of Boy Scout Troop 720 and helps children learn about robotics—in his spare time. Their two children, Nick and Kristin, have grown up with strong values that their parents have instilled in them since birth. Kristen is entering a Masters program to study speech and language; Nick is a senior patrol leader of his scout troop. Becky McAlennan, who is also involved in Boy Scouts, said, “If you can volunteer, you should.” She keeps track of badges and awards. Her favorite aunt passed
away from cancer and her mother and stepfather are survivors of the same disease, so she has a personal interest in cancer research. Mike McAlennan’s father died of leukemia and he knows of others inflicted with the disease. “Volunteers can make all the difference to someone in need,” he said. The couple has been involved with the premier fundraising event for Relay for Life every year since 2006 and have helped raise more than $90,000 for cancer research. This annual event is part of a national fundraising program. In Rockledge, the relay involves sponsored volunteers walking or running around the high school track for a total of 18 hours. Food and drink are available and vendors sell special items to help with the fundraising. To date, the McAleenan’s team has been the leader out of 14 relays in Brevard County. They were high-school sweethearts and after they married, they traveled the world to such places as Japan, Italy and all over the United States. “In the military, volunteerism is a way of life,” Mike McAleenan said. Becky McAleenan said, “You have to pay it forward. You never know when you might need someone to help you.” VV

Biker. Lead guitar player in a rock band. Pastor. Generally, motorcycle rider and rock musician are not on the list of required skills for faith leaders, but these skills are vital to Pastor Dave Jahn’s role at Advent Lutheran Church in Suntree. An avid and safetyconscious motorcyclist, “Pastor Dave” conducts the annual blessing of the bikes and participates in the Saints on Wheels clergy riding group. As a self-described fix-it kind of guy, the pastor with an electrical engineering degree rebuilds old motorcycles. “Tinkering with the bikes is a kind of therapy,” he said. “As pastor, I feel my work is never finished, but working on bikes allows me to say: it’s done.” According to church literature, “Music is and always has been an integral part of worship at our church.” In keeping with that sentiment, Advent’s worship band, Disciple 13, which includes the pastor and up to 14 other church members, leads the weekly nontraditional worship service. The pastor is lead guitarist

Parting Shot Great Land Crab (Cardisoma guanhumi)
The great land crab, also known as the blue land crab or white land crab, is found
in North and South America. In Florida, it dwells in the coastal areas; locally, it thrives

in the Indian River Lagoon. This is a large, elusive, burrowing crab. The male is generally bigger than the female—the shell (carapace) can measure five or more inches wide. These shells display various colors, such as striking blues for adults, frequent light grays or whites for egg-bearing females and browns for juveniles. This species appears somewhat menacing with stalked, widespread eyes and two claws, one larger than the other; moreover, the male flaunts an especially enlarged claw. Activity heightens at dawn and dusk. However, the crab will feed in shaded areas in the daytime. Primarily vegetarian, it prefers fruits, grasses and mangrove and
buttonwood leaves; insects and carrion are occasionally consumed. Besides providing nourishment, its habitat must be located where its burrow (up to 7 inches wide) intersects the water table and maintains a small pool of water at the bottom. In Florida, spawning season occurs from June to December and peaks in October and November. When it is time, the female begins the migration to the ocean. The male courts her and internal fertilization occurs. For approximately two weeks prior to hatching, the female carries external egg masses on the edge of the shell, under the tail, on the back, or on the abdomen. Subsequently, the eggs are spawned (shaken off) in the ocean. Salt water

enables the hatching larvae to survive. Thus, the basically terrestrial great land crab is dependent on the ocean for reproduction. VV

Volunteers are the heart of wildlife festival
Hands-on wildlife, a photo contest and the hard work of volunteers resulted in the doubling of this year’s attendance to 450 at the Second Annual Friends of Viera Wetlands Festival on Saturday, April 14. “My favorite things about the festival this year were the animals and the live music by original artists every half hour,” said volunteer

Cindy Lieberman. She is a member of Friends of Viera (FOV) Wetlands a nonprofit group recently incorporated that recruits volunteers to help care for the wetlands in and around the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands at the west end of Wickham Road. “One highlight was being able to have my picture taken with Squirt the alligator,” Lieberman said of one of two baby alligators brought in by Jungle Jim Green to touch and hold. An armadillo, a turtle and other touchable wildlife filled out the bill. “It was the first time many kids and adults had ever been that close to the creatures we see in almost every body of water in Florida,” Lieberman said. Walking tours were led by 9-year-old birder Gabriel Cenker, founder of Young Birders of Brevard and photo contest winner. For the first time, van tours were offered, driven by FOV volunteer Chris Koeppel. That was a boon for many young and old attendees, as the elevated, unpaved roads wind for miles around the four

large ponds in the wetlands. The first-ever photo contest, sponsored by VIeRA VOICe, drew nearly 30 entrants with up to three photos each, capturing rare finds like the Crested Caracara, American Bittern and deer, to the more common gator, Great Blue heron and Sandhill crane. Photos like these may be included in the soon-to-be updated Viera Wetlands Birding Guide, produced by VIeRA VOICe parent Bluewater Creative Group. The popular guide is given out to every visitor of local wildlife parks, allowing birders to notch off every bird they spot and encouraging repeat visits. First-place winners are David Shirah for Best of Show; William Dodsworth for Advanced Category; Julie Lally for Amateur Category; and Gabriel Cenker for Youth Category. The winning photos will be on display at the Holiday Inn Viera at 8298 N. Wickham Rd. in Viera. For more information or to volunteer, go to friendsofvierawetlands.blogspot.com.
