Rockledge resident Daniel Rensing has business in his blood. Rensing, whose family owns a large electronics manufacturing company nearby, moved to the Viera area from New York in 2003. Instead of diving into the electronic business, he sought to do more, never thinking it would land him on network television and eventually make him the owner of a popular chain of baking products. “I moved down and decided to go to school for computer graphics design,” Rensing said. “At the time, the family business was always a fallback. I wanted to do something a little different.” Which he did — all thanks to his large extended family and his wife, Stephanie. Stephanie loved to bake. The only problem was that some nights she would be crafting up something for two, and other nights for a group of 20 or more. This left her baking conversions off by either too much or too little. Rensing had had enough. “She was always changing the recipes amounts around and on the laptop in the kitchen and I was getting annoyed because there’s flower and eggs all over and she’s a mess,” he said with a smile. into an apron that served as more than a dish rag, the young graphic designer invented a wearable cheat sheet with common baking conversions printed on it upside down, making it easier to read and use. But it didn’t stop there. After selling the apron online, the eager entrepreneur invented other easy-to-use and “why didn’t I think of that” products — inventing The Smart Baker line. This included parchment paper with tab handles, barbecue aprons and towels with cooking times and various meat temperatures on them and a lightweight tiered cupcake tower and cake pop stand. “It just came to us,” Rensing said. “They were answers to dilemmas we were having in and out of the kitchen and we knew we weren’t alone.” On a whim, Rensing decided to take it to the next level, pitching the line to the ABC reality show “Shark Tank,” which pits entrepreneurs in front of deep-pocketed potential investors. While he was an avid fan of the show, he never expected to be on it. “It was a long process. We had to do tons of paperwork, fly to California and tape the show even though we didn’t even know if our segment would air.” he said. “Luckily, it did.” The March episode aired,

Viera, there’s a new place of worship in town, but don’t look for stain-glassed windows or a steeple. Instead, everyone is invited to join a small group of about 30 who meet in a conference room at 10 a.m. each Sunday at the Viera Holiday Inn. Pastor Jeremiah Fyffe has no standard pulpit with fancy design or sculpture. Instead, his podium is a music stand and he sits on a wooden stool as he speaks. During the music portion of the service, he contributes by playing a djembe, an African drum, joined by members playing the keyboard and an acoustic guitar. The location of CrossPointe Coast lends itself to a casual, comfortable atmosphere for both adults and children, where Fyffe preached his first sermon at the Viera location on Sept. 23. Some might say the reason Fyffe wanted to pastor is so he could preach in jeans. They would be wrong, but that is probably how you’ll find him on Sunday mornings—jeans and a plaid shirt. Downtown Yoga announced the opening of its second location on Saturday, Nov. 3, this one in Park Plaza, behind Viera Voice and near Nature’s Table. Owner Annette Armstrong said, “We’re in the neighborhood because we feel we have a fun location.” She opened her first studio in historic downtown Melbourne on New Haven Avenue seven years ago. With 12 instructors and 50 classes a week between the two studios, Armstrong said, “You can’t afford not to do it and you don’t have to be flexible to take yoga.” Downtown Yoga offers yoga for all ages and all budgets. The studio is open seven days a week, with classes to fit most schedules. “We have one session called Yoga Where You Are. It’s yoga on a donation basis. Snow Ball for a good cause By angela Smith

No, Snow Ball 2012 is not a big snow fight — it’s an end-of-the-year dinner dance, celebrating the holidays and coming together, while also giving to those less fortunate in the community. The seasonal-themed dance is an annual tradition of the Viera Women’s Club, a nonprofit group whose mission is to enhance the lives of women and help those in need around them. The Dec. 2 fundraiser marks the fourth year the club has hosted the classy and popular affair. “We have a good turnout each year and I think it’s the whole idea of dinner, live music and the fact that we’re all together helping others,” said Karen Terry, club president. “It’s a nice way to support the ones who’ve supported our causes.” While the dance usually draws 100 guests, this year the club hopes to double that

attendance. “We want to involve the entire community and get them interested in what’s going on in the area,” Terry said. “It’s been a tough year for some organizations and they need our help. What better way to help than enjoying a night of dinner and dancing.” The ballroom inside Viera’s Holiday Inn is transformed into a winter wonderland, very much like the inside of a snow globe, with blue, silver and white decor fluttering around the room and snow flakes galore. It will be a night to remember, organizers say. “We want people to remember the evening and how much fun it will be and how they helped people in their community,” said Ruthee Magrini. “It’s something unlike the others and we’re more fun. We try to make it that way.” In the past the club’s event has raised a few thousand dollars for area organizations and projects, and this year will

Veterans of Foreign Wars urge inclusion of female veterans Special to Viera Voice

The Department of Veterans Affairs reports the current active duty force is comprised of 14.6 percent women. The Reserves and National Guard are 15.5 percent female. The majority of female service members have served during periods of high deployment such as Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, Desert Storm, Bosnia and Kosovo. These high numbers of returning women veterans drive the need for gender specific support as they return home and assimilate into their communities. Therefore, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, cognizant of these veterans and their needs, have generated a program to encourage membership for all eligible women veterans. The program currently has more than 71,000 members, meeting in 200 Florida VFW Posts. In 2008, VFW began a recruiting campaign called She Serves. The multiprong effort includes the National She Serves Committee, focused on advising the VFW leadership on women veteran’s needs and a marketing campaign aimed exclusively at women veterans. The She Serves Advisory Group is now the National Women Veterans Committee, with members from each department. The group continues to advise leadership on Women Veterans issues and participates each year

at the National Legislative Conference, focusing on important VFW legislative goals that affect women veterans. With the large numbers of women veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, the VFW strives to improve as an organization. It welcomes women as comrades in arms and provides tailored assistance and support to them and their families. Karen Nigara, Department of Florida Women Veterans chairperson, urges VFW officials to keep women veterans that qualify for VFW membership in mind and to tailor recruiting efforts to their needs. Nigara said, “There are several resources, but the most successful tool that I have found is utilizing current women VFW members that are active at the post, district and department levels. Your best resource is your own women members.” Nigara said that new women members will bring vitality and energy the VFW needs; women who are recruited and join the organization are typically strong contributing members of the organization. “As the VFW year progresses, I encourage all districts to appoint a Women Veterans chairperson to organize and execute a Women Veterans celebration during March 2013,” she said. Space Coast becomes an oasis for desert veterans By Linda Wiggins

When Clint Kison was nearing the end of his near one-year term of deployment to the hot desert of Afghanistan, he had one thought on his mind. What next? With a soft economy that is always softer in his home state of Michigan, he considered the dangerous option of re-upping just to have an income. The danger is not just from improvised explosive devices, but from the dramatic increase of posttraumatic stress disorder that results from repeat or extended deployment. Friends and family in Brevard beckoned him Florida-ward instead. An aunt, uncle and cousins in Suntree, and later a future home filled with fellow veteran housemates, sold him on the Space Coast and its welcome for those who serve. Care packages sent by Viera Voice readers last year didn’t hurt. “I’m ready for a new start,” Kison said. The Army medic’s dream job is to be a firefighter paramedic for Brevard County Fire-Rescue Station 48 in Viera. Not

only does it have a great reputation due to its Special Operations specialty, but it hosts the county’s monument to the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the Twin Towers. It was that event which inspired the then 12-year-old Kison to later respond in uniform to the harsh terrain where Al-Qaeda terrorists received their training. Giving thanks together amplifies praise By Linda Wiggins

Before sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner, many local congregants will come together the day before to give thanks for what they have and to pray for those who must do without. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, a group of churches in the area that help each other reach out to those less fortunate will host the Thanksgiving-eve service at Faith â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vieraâ&#x20AC;? Lutheran Church, on Viera Boulevard just east of Murrell Road. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This holiday is all about giving thanks to the Source of all our abundance, God,â&#x20AC;? said Faith â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vieraâ&#x20AC;? Lutheran Rev. Ron Meyr, who is coordinating the service. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This keeps us humble and happy. We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t create what we have. We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t generate it. Otherwise, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to get caught up in the feeling of never having enough and become very discontent.â&#x20AC;? The event is one of three joint events put on each year by the Suntree/Viera Area Association of Churches, a network of churches from Faith Fellowship to the south, to Faith â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vieraâ&#x20AC;? Lutheran to the north. Members collect food for the needy and pool resources to provide financial relief to families who have fallen on hard times. It also coordinates the National Day of Prayer at noon at the Viera Government Center reflection pond and the Easter Sunrise Service, which will be held overlooking the Indian River Lagoon at Rotary Park in Suntree. The Thanksgiving-eve service will be an opportunity to focus on the positive, according to Meyr. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even as the economy still recovers, it focuses our thoughts more on what we do have â&#x20AC;&#x201D; rather than on what we do not have,â&#x20AC;? Bringing Relief to The Melbourne Community

On Saturday morning, Oct. 20, 2012, approximately 10,000 dogs, cats and people dressed up in pink jammed into the large field just north of Space Coast Stadium in Viera to participate in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk/Run to raise money to fight breast cancer. The theme was Wear a Pink Bra and with the support of law enforcement agencies, Stadium Parkway was barricaded to allow runners and walkers room to navigate the 5K (3.1 mile) course from the stadium to the government center and back. Florida Gov. Rick Scott; former U. S. Senator Connie Mack III; Priscilla Mack, a breast cancer survivor; Florida Congressman Connie

Mack IV; State Senator Mike Haridopolis; and Dr. Stephanie Haridopolis attended. Dr. Steph, as she is affectionately called, was chairperson of the event, which had a goal of raising more than $300,000 to fight breast cancer. Dr. Steph and Gov. Scott were among those handing out medallions to breast cancer survivors prior to the non-competitive walk/run as it started at 9 a.m. under a fire ladder truck provided by the Brevard County Fire Department. Brevard County Parks and Recreation also provided support. Viera High School cheerleaders roused the walkers and runners with cheers before racing and to welcome the walkers/runners across the finish line. VV

Justice Teaching remains priority at local schools by Angela Smith

Imagine that the United States has been invaded and you’re only allowed to keep five out the first 10 amendments, otherwise known as the Bill of Rights. That is often a scenario given to Brevard County students by local attorneys and judges, teaching the young minds the skills of critical thinking, debate and reasoned discussion while they learn about their constitutional rights. “They quickly realize that freedom of religion means nothing if one cannot peaceably assemble and a right to counsel does not really matter if you have no protection from unreasonable searches and seizures or from self incrimination,” said Viera resident Trizia Eavenson, a Rockledge attorney with Moore Eavenson Baughan, PLC. “The students walk out with a sense of gratitude and patriotism that (is) invaluable,” she added. Besides being an attorney, Eavenson is

also a volunteer within the Florida Justice Teaching program, a movement developed in 2006 by the then Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice R. Fred Lewis. The ultimate goal of the program is to pair a legal professional with every elementary, middle and high school in the state of Florida. Providing interactive constitutional education to all school children promotes a better understanding of government institutions, while providing open access to judicial officers. Six years later, local advocates of the program believe it’s stronger than ever. “It’s all about giving back to your community,” said Eavenson , who has taught lessons at area schools, including John F. Kennedy Middle School in Rockledge. “I love empowering our Brevard students by teaching them their rights under the Constitution and also teaching them that they can become whatever they want to be…” JUSTICE continued on page 13

Viera High School held the first Homecoming Parade on Friday, Oct 19. Parades are a great way to involve many students and the community. Eighteen teams and clubs participated, including the JROTC, the high school Drum Line, Business & Digital Academies, three teams of Cheerleaders, Chorus, the cast of “All Shook Up,” Basketball, VIERA VOICE photo Volleyball, Swimming and Diving The girls volleyball team had the winning float entitled “An Evening of teams, Beta Club, Math Club, Eerie Elegance.” Video Club, Student Government and Peace Jam Club. The parade started in the stadium and looped around the outside of the stadium and finished near the stadium’s east gate. It was in true Viera fashion — a golf cart parade. The clubs and teams decorated golf carts. The winning float went to the Volleyball team, which decorated a float in the theme of homecoming “An Evening of Eerie Elegance.” Second place went to the Swim & Dive team and third place went to the Math Club. Viera High’s Young set up perfectly for state run By Carl Kotala

Greg Young steps up to the line, transitions into his motion and lets it fly. The ball glides down the lane — like it’s on glass, his coach says — and spins perfectly into the pocket for a strike. “Spin to win,” is the Viera High junior’s motto. And for the past few months, the 16-year-old has been … well … on a roll. Early last month, Young posted a 300 game at Harbour Lanes in Melbourne, just days after his good friend, Michael Coffey of Eau Gallie, had bowled a 299. It was just the second 300 game in Brevard County varsity bowling history (Coffey had the first one last year).

Young said it was the fourth time he’s bowled a perfect game in a tournament, and that he’s thrown 10 or more in other settings. In August, he won the Teen Masters Grand Championship in New York City’s Grand Central Station, which came with a $64,000 scholarship prize package. “That definitely gave me a ton of experience (dealing with) pressure and making shots when I need it,” Young said. “Everything from now on will be easier, in the sense of pressure, because I’m used to it more.” Viera took part in the district tournament Oct. 29 at River Lanes in Cocoa. The state tournament is set for Nov. 7 and 8 at the Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando. Young, who finished sixth individually last year, is hoping for a better finish for both himself and his team. “I love my team. Young, who joined a bowling league with his grandparents when he was 8, was definitely on point in the Teen Master’s tournament. After qualifying in Ohio, the top four boys and girls went to New York, where roughly 150,000 people passed by each day while they competed. “They put a lane right in the middle of it, and they had people setting up the pins by hand,” Young said. “It was crazy. They had bleachers on either side of the lanes.” Though he has talked to three of the top bowling schools — Webber International, Wichita State and Robert Morris — he has yet to decide where he wants to go, or if he will pursue a career as a professional bowler. “Right now, I’m focused on college,” Young said. “Once I get to college, I’ll see if I could make it. It’s my Plan B. Plan A is to try to get something to go with for college and get a degree and get a job out of there. But if I’m good enough, yeah for sure.” VV

If senior leadership is what it’s all about, the Viera High girls soccer team appears to be in good hands. “Their leadership is going to carry the team,” first-year coach Courtney BainesLundy said. “I’ve never seen such good leadership from a group of girls. “Usually, you have one or two (who are good leaders). But all of them, they lead together. It’s fun to watch.” Despite a bevy of injuries, last season was a breakthrough for the Hawks, who defeated rival Melbourne for their first district title. Baines-Lundy will try to help the Hawks get to the next level. A star player at Satellite High, Baines-Lundy was also an

I respect her a lot as a coach. She was a very strong player and I know that she knows the game well and will keep us disciplined and ready to win.” Eva Banton, Joy Wilkinson, Haleigh Garrett, Taylor Cahoon, Cierra Fisher and Stengel make up the six-

member senior class that will lead the Hawks. Other key players include juniors Hannah Fish and Kelsey Keesecker, and sophomores Allison Summers and Nicki Fisher. After winning the district championship last season, the Hawks have their eyes set on a trip to the state tournament. While that is the long-term goal, Baines-Lundy is making sure the players keep their eyes focused only on the opponent ahead. Stengel, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL, is eager to get started. “I’m very excited,” she said. “It’s my senior year … back and rehabbed 100 percent. I feel like I’m stronger than I was. I feel like we’ll go even farther than we ever have.” VV

Viera swimmers, divers eye state meet By Carl Kotala

After a fun, successful regular season, the Viera High swimming teams are getting down to some serious business. The Viera girls finished third at last month’s Cape Coast Conference meet, with the boys coming in fifth. Individual winners included divers Kayleigh Jensen and Kyle Post, as well as senior Heather Pituch in the 100 backstroke. It was the third consecutive year Jensen has won the CCC diving title, though she did admit it was a little nerve racking after she “messed up” on her third of 11 dives. Post, a former football player who is only in his second year of diving, had a steady meet and showed how much he has improved since last year’s fifthplace finish. “It was definitely a fun meet for me,” he said. “All of my dives were pretty solid. I just had to keep doing my best and I knew I would be close to getting first.” Pituch, meanwhile, was able to overcome a little fatigue, and some tough competition to claim her CCC title. “I was really nervous about facing (the second-seeded swimmer), and it was my third race of the day, so I was kind of

Tigers hungry for more success

Last year’s trip to the regional semfinals opened a few eyes both inside and outside of the Holy Trinity girls soccer program. “I think it was a real turning point last year,” senior tri-captain Tori Glaubitz said. “Everyone was like, ‘Oh girls soccer at Holy Trinity … blah, blah, blah.’ “But last year, we made a name for ourselves.” That success has inspired Holy Trinity players to work even harder. The Tigers will be hungry for more this season, and considering they only lost four players — and return their top two scorers — there is every reason to believe they will be contenders in both their district and their region in 2012. Senior midfielder Kayleigh Leeney joins Glaubitz and junior Meg Rydson as the captains on this year’s Holy Trinity team. Emily Morgan and Summer Rydson were the top two scorers on last year’s team. Other key players include

Andrea Bomalaski, Kate Elstun and Morgan Walker. “We’re as strong, if not a little bit stronger than last year,” Tigers coach Dean Flexton said. In addition to having 12 returners, the Tigers have several players who play for some of the top club teams in the area. And given that they have a nice mix of senior leadership, and young talent, they still have plenty of room to grow. Holy Trinity will kick off its 2012 season on Oct. 30 with a game at Edgewood, followed by back-to-back

Other top finishers included Andrew Cummings, who was third in the 100 backstroke and captain Jamie Daszuta, who finished fourth in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle. “Having those top finishes at Conference still shows that Viera swimming and diving can hold our own,” said Viera’s Morgan Woodard, who coaches the team with her mother, Debbie Tweedie, and diving coach Alex Jensen. The Class 3A regional meet is set for Nov. 3 and 4 in Boca Raton, while the state meet will be Nov. 9 at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando. Post’s goal is to finish in the top eight at the state meet, which would be a big improvement over last year’s 17th-place finish. Pituch is hoping to qualify in the 100 backstroke and the

home contests against Sebastian River on Nov. 1 and Bayside High on Nov. 5. A big early-season game will take place on Nov. 15, when the Tigers host rival Melbourne Central Catholic at 6 p.m. A big key, Flexton said, will be whether the Tigers can do a better job of finishing off scoring opportunities than they did last season. If they can do that, it could be a year to remember. “I think we can do a lot better,” junior tri-captain Meg Rydson said. “I think this season is going to be pretty successful for us, because we’re all motivated this year, and we know we have a good core team.”

“I want to keep my streak going for my senior year, and improve and finish strong,” she said. “I got one of my best 11-dive scores the meet before Cape Coast, so I’m improving.” VV

Bobby Collins will make debut at the King Center

Bobby Collins’ philosophy is, “Make ’em laugh. Educate through humor. Open their hearts, their eyes.” The New York native has toured the country, leaving his audiences laughing from coast to coast. He lives in California with his wife and three daughters, but recently bought the New York apartment where he grew up so he could truly come home when touring the East Coast. He has hosted VH-1’s Stand Up Spotlight, toured with Cher, Julio Iglesias, Dolly Parton, Tony Bennett and others. His nationwide performances keep him on “Lady Stage” with more than 200 engagements each year. The father of three daughters, said, “I got lucky. That’s all.”

His shows sell out, especially in South Florida. “I do well in Florida,” he said. “They like me; 95 percent of my shows sell out.” The funny man will make his first appearance in Central Florida at the King Center for the Performing Arts on Nov. 9. Fine Arts Festival picks Viera artist for poster By MARy BROTHERTON

In mid-November, Melbourneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Highland Avenue transforms into an enormous art studio as the Eau Gallie Arts District celebrates its 16th annual Fine Arts Festival. Each yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event poster represents the work of a different artist. This year, Vieraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Alex Stankiewicz holds that distinction for his rendition of the historic Roesch House. Due to laryngitis, he was interviewed via email. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is an honor to be selected ' ' # ' &' %( $! "' ')

for the Artworks poster,â&#x20AC;? he wrote. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My inspiration is the mystique surrounding that quaint little porch over the front door. One of my charcoal sketches that was a study for the painting was selected.â&#x20AC;? Stankiewicz is one of 80 artists demonstrating their skills at the festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 17 and 18, providing attendees the opportunity to see different techniques used to create coveted pieces of art. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really like this feature of the show,â&#x20AC;? Stankiewicz said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am preparing a simple

plan for beginning a painting; my methodology applies to most mediums, excluding watercolors.â&#x20AC;? The free outdoor festival draws an estimated 20,000 attendees annually. Some come to watch painters, sculptors, photographers or jewelry artists while enjoying music and the food court. SCHOOL Cool school weather brings fall fun

With cooler temperatures rolling in, students across Viera and Suntree get to experience something of a season change not unlike in the North. While rarely a prelude to snow, however, autumn on the Space Coast still ushers in pumpkins, colors of orange, red and brown, and a harvest of fall fun. And speaking of harvest fun, Manatee Elementary School

is always a hoot. Literally. Students, parents, teachers and especially principal Carl Brown hoot, holler and dance in their cowboy hats, boots and plaid shirts. The fall event is an evening one, the Harvest Hoedown, held Friday, Oct. 19. “I try to do something each year that surprises the students. They seem to enjoy seeing me in my cowboy duds, so why not,” said Brown, who dressed as

Holy Trinity students Evan Ristow and Isabela Rovira have learned firsthand how to share the healing power of music. MusicMDs, currently at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, is an independent, non-profit volunteer organization of high school and college student musicians founded in 2009 by West Shore High School siblings Varun and Esha Bansal. There are now 15 student performers, including Ristow and Rovira, involved in the student-run program. The goal of the program “is to evolve MusicMDs to become a widespread communitybased effort involving many healthcare facilities, student music organizations, high school orchestra & band programs, and aspiring young musicians,’’ said their mother Radha Bansal. “The program is growing but we don’t want it to grow too fast because we’ve already had such good feedback from the patients and administrators. If we get enough performers, we might start at Viera Hospital,’’ she said. Viera-based publisher Bluewater Creative Group took home 10 awards for its Senior Life and Boomer Senior Guide publications from the industry leading North American Mature Publications Association on Sept. 29. Bluewater also publishes Viera Voice. Senior Life newspaper won six awards, including firstplace awards for best overall use of photography, best column, best special section and best color ad design. The annual Boomer Senior Guide won four awards, including a first-place award for best front-cover photo. “Many of our boomers and seniors live in the Viera and Suntree area,” said Jill Gaines, Bluewater CEO and designer of Senior Life and the Boomer Senior Guide. “This is such an honor, and more importantly, 

we believe to be the very best value possible to our residents and daily guests,” said Vincent Anella, chairman of VECDD, said. Viera East Golf Club is a daily fee, public course located on Murrell Road in Viera. It opened in 1994. PTM, responsible for all aspects of maintaining Viera East Golf Club, has hired all of the existing club maintenance employees, including course superintendent, Scott Mosher. PGA member David Buth will remain as the general manager of the CDD and the golf club and will oversee the contract with PTM.

D.I.G. Bistro is set to burst onto the scene in a palate of colors and flavors of fresh fruits and veggies fixed with tasty flair. The move fills a void in offering fresh, locally grown foods and options for organically grown and raised items, according to owner Gina Pierce, also the owner of the popular Tuscany Grill. The new dining spot is in the adjacent strip mall, in the spot that used to be Crispers. “This is something we already do at Tuscany Grill. We pay a little more to get locally grown produce, but it’s more than worth it in the quality and flavor that ends up on the plate. Customers appreciate that and your business grows,” Pierce said. The new restaurant will continue to be family run, as the general manager will be Cara Booth, Pierce’s daughter-in-law. The head chef, Dennis Lott, will run both kitchens. Local esthetician helps clear up teens acne By Angela Smith

Fighting acne is like going to war. It only gets worse before it gets better. While scars are inevitable, they may slowly disappear with time. Viera resident Dina Gilbert knows this firsthand. She’s had to witness her teenage son, Conner, go through the physical and emotional war against cystic acne; one of the worst forms possible. “It’s not easy,” said Gilbert of the agonizing and painful skin irritation that is caused by an imbalance in the hormonal system. “All you want to do is help, but as a parent there’s not much you can do besides getting the right treatment.” After trying multiple regimens, being prescribed medication for this and cream for that, Gilbert was fed up with the ordinary path, and chose a new route that would hopefully work. me that it no longer hurts to smile,” Presnick said. Viera parent Elena Zabolotna couldn’t agree more. Like Dina, her teenage daughter, had cystic acne and thought there was no alternative. “It’s hard to believe the difference,” Zabolotna said after a few treatments at A Perfect Complexion. “She had a lot of scarring we couldn’t even see because her face was so swollen. More than 3,200 residents strolled the second-annual Viera Voice Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 13, with creative scarecrows and schoolcrows the jewels that crowned a day of fall fun, food, games and more. “We are overjoyed at the popularity of this event. It’s great to see families hungry for fun things to do that celebrate Viera’s rich harvest heritage,” said Viera Voice publisher Jill Gaines, whose company coordinated the event. Even more so than the hayrides and bounce houses, the most popular activities were the hay maze and the Zucchini 500, where children decorated and put wheels on the vegetables to race down a ramp for prizes. Both attractions are unique in Brevard. Fall foods included corn on the cob, Granny Smith apple slices with warm caramel, and of course the staple hotdogs and burgers. For the more adventurous, there was a selection of popular Greek dishes made by members of St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church that filled the bill. “That was the best cheeseburger I ever had in my life,” said Quest Elementary School student Andrew Baurle. The schoolcrows were created by student, parent and volunteer teams from local schools, and then sold in a silent auction, with 100 percent of the $552 raised going back to those school classrooms. “Not only is it so important to give students the opportunity to have their creative works ‘oohed’ and ‘ahhed’ over by their parents, family and friends, and members of the public,” said Suntree Elementary fourth-grade teacher Dr. Kelly Dwenger, “ but something even more interesting happened that I’d never observed before, which was even more exciting. When people actually bought my students’ schoolcrows, it was the most fulfilling and validating experience for them that I’ve ever seen. They talked more about that than winning a trophy.” Scarecrows created by area businesses raised $510 in the auction, which all went to Rolling Readers of the Space Coast. “The exposure and resources provided to our mission was unparalleled,” said Rolling Readers founder Mary Eason, a former teacher whose passion is to send volunteers into at-risk schools to read to students and strengthen their reading skills. Rounding out the charity focus, more than 200 cans of food were collected for the Suntree/Viera Area Association of Churches member Advent Lutheran Church’s community food bank. The black-bellied whistling duck, formerly named blackbellied tree duck, whistles instead of quacks. Also unique are a black underside, a pale eye ring, an elongated red bill, an almost goose-like neck, long pink legs, and white wing patches (see photo). Preferred habits are perching in trees and nesting in tree cavities, which are 8 feet off the ground. In some aspects, the black-bellied whistling duck is comparable to the goose and the swan: the male and the female look alike (lack of sexual dimorphism), the male participates in incubation, mating behavior is simple and

long-term bonding prevails. (Dendrocygna, this duck’s genus, means tree swan.) Habitats range from the southern United States to South America. When not nesting, this duck tends to flock but is mainly nonmigratory. Freshwater locations, such as ponds, lakes and marshes, provide ideal locations to survive. The diet for this dabbler often includes grain, grass, insects, mollusks and aquatic vegetation. Nocturnal feeding is prevalent. In the open water at the Viera Wetlands, the blackbellied whistling duck is

attracted to dead palm trees with horizontal openings at the very top. It frequently enters such a hollow. Although there is no evidence of nesting activities in these snags, there is the possibility of future breeding. Nevertheless, breeding occurs on one of the man-made islands in the vicinity. A scrape nest on the ground is sufficient. Reproduction is successful despite of the occasional crested caracara that absconds with the eggs. A brood of approximately 13 is common. Precocial at birth, a duckling leaves the family haven within

The brothers Puzino are at it again By George White

Mike Puzino is carrying on what has become a family business for him and his six brothers. They all grew up on Satellite Beach after his parents moved to Brevard from Long Island, N.Y. in the late-1980s. The brothers’ names, from the oldest are: James, Billy, Richie, Joey, Bobby, Mike and Danny. “We have been in Brevard County for a long time. We all graduated from Satellite High. It seems like everybody knows at least one of us,’’ Mike Puzino said. Puzino’s Pizza, featuring authentic New York-style pizza, will open in early November in a 1,200-squarefoot location at 5380 Stadium Parkway in Viera, the family’s first freestanding restaurant built from scratch. Other brothers own other Puzino’s locations in Suntree and Palm Bay with one brother running a Bizzaro’s Pizza franchise on Wickham Road in Melbourne. “We have other locations that are located inside gas

Creating a sense of community Often we hear that residents of an association feel disconnected from the community. Maybe they have never met their next-door neighbor or have no idea who serves on the board of directors. You probably have heard other examples, like people who do not go to the pool because there are tight cliques there or in clubhouse activities. How do we help residents feel like they belong to the community? How do we create a sense of community? Of course, this is a situation where the affected resident ought to take action, as well. Here are some suggestions that may help your association give these residents the incentive to become

involved. Communication is an important factor in community spirit. Associations are able to create inexpensive websites that are very informative. Pages can be designed to allow residents to post comments, place classified ads, reply to questionnaires and express their opinions. Attractive websites may also be a useful tool to attract new owners to an association. Your association may also want to use the website to send newsletters on a regular schedule, which will become anticipated by residents. Informative “eblasts” send emails to your residents, telling them about meeting dates, community activities, lost pets or new association rules. Attractively crafted newsletters distributed to residents will give updates about your association. If your association has a bulletin board, you have another opportunity to update your residents of the latest news. Some associations offset the expense through advertising or sponsorships. Communication opportunities can be unlimited only by your creativity. Association events and social activities provide another multitude of possibilities. Some examples would include community picnics, breakfast with Santa, Easter egg hunts, sports tournaments, mother and LUNCH MENU
