New Williams principal picked for plum of a job By Linda Wiggins

Suntree Elementary School’s vice principal will take the helm at Viera’s historic first school, Ralph Williams Elementary. Chris Reed replaces Williams’ founding principal, Cynthia Ford, who retired after 14 years as top administrator. “It’s very exciting,” Reed said as he removed diplomas in elementary education and educational leadership from the walls in his Suntree office to place in a moving box, keeping company with family photos of him with his wife, RaNae, and his dog, Wrigley, and favorite sports mementos from his beloved Denver Broncos. The assignment is considered a plum, as schools in the Viera/Suntree area are all A-rated by the Florida Department of Education, surrounded by families with above-average income and education levels, and a greater percentage of oneincome families, resulting in more time for parent volunteering and investment in their children’s education.

“I have big shoes to fill.” — Chris Reed

Ford was selected to lead the school during its final planning stages, allowing her to set the school’s theme to reflect the values of the surrounding Viera community, from the Crane mascot for the sandhill cranes that represent the value placed on wildlife, to the muted browns and maroons she found conducive to brain development. “I have some big shoes to fill,” said Reed, adding Principal Reed continue to page 22

Sisters Lauri Duda and Tracy Duda Chapman both are quick to share fond memories of hunting, fishing, dropping into a lake from a soaring rope swing and other adventures roughing it on the “Cocoa Ranch,” a name given to the A. Duda & Sons, Inc. property settled in the 1940s by “the sons” to breed cattle. Their grandfather, Ferdinand Duda, was one of the three sons of Eastern European immigrant Andrew Duda, who, together, founded the Central Florida ranching and farming company in 1926. The core values of the sons would forever guide the development of the community of Viera on the ranch, which was envisioned by the third generation of the Duda family. an entire community will make a difference in the world. “I always had someone to come to for help, raising my family, whatever the need, I was not alone,” Duda said. “In this new community, basically in the world today, people move a lot and may not have family members near them like our family has enjoyed. Our intention with community events like Fourth of July at the Stadium and the Light Up Viera parade at the holidays is to bring people together so they can form a family of their own choosing among their neighbors.” The three sons, “Andy,” John and Ferdinand, created three distinct families, but the key to the success of the family business that has flourished for the better part of a century is that family members are swayed more by founding family principles than by individual personalities, Tracy Duda Chapman said.

The Present

“All of this is possible because we put family first, and this is the culture we want to convey, the culture of community. We created this master-planned community so more people could enjoy this land and partake of these values,” said Duda Chapman, senior vice president and general counsel for A. Duda & Sons and CEO of The Viera Company. “It is designed so you have your homes, shopping, schools, parks and recreation, perhaps even your workplace at the hospital or government center, or future clean industry developed in the right locations, all in one area for efficient transportation,” she said. “We placed all this infrastructure on top of what will always be a nature

preserve to enjoy the beauty of nature as close as your backyard. There are wildlife corridors throughout the community, allowing us to effectively conserve nature, just as we manage the agriculture and ranching that will all continue to flourish in perpetuity as mankind flourishes. We are all but stewards of the land.”

The Future

Christopher Duda is fifth generation. When you are a Duda, you memorize your lineage because it is a question you are repeatedly asked: greatgreat-grandfather Andrew Sr., great-grandfather John, grandfather Edward, and father “Tommy.” In pre-law at the University of Florida, Duda is interning in the legal department at The Viera Company in a program designed specifically to attract and groom Duda generations to serve in the many growing facets of the business. Previous summers have been spent ripping plastic off the celery beds alongside

other farmhands, digging ditches in citrus fields, chasing cattle on horseback, answering phones or mastering any number of mind-numbing entry-level tasks. “My great-grandfather said it well, ‘If they are going to be able to manage one day, they have to know what a day’s work is.’ Working in the accounting department may not have been my most favorite experience, for example, but every task I have performed makes me appreciate the jobs that each and every person does and the value it brings,” Duda said of the DUDA corporation’s full-time employee roster that now numbers 570. “Besides, when I go back to school and everybody talks about the jobs they did over the summer,” Duda said, “how many others can say, ‘I got to be a cowboy’?” For information on the July 5 event, go to Great AmericanCelebration. com. State-of-the-art ‘medical city’ taking shape on Wickham Road in Suntree STAFF REPORT

m kha Wic Rd.

Site development is underway for Suntree Viera Professional Park, an all-inone “medical city” planned on nearly 24 undeveloped acres at Wickham Road and Pineda Court. The project could employ about 100 people. When completed in late 2015, the complex will feature a 31,000-square-foot, two-story building that will become the new home of Suntree Internal Medicine; a 90-bed Housing and Urban Development-financed assisted living facility; a large diagnostic center with state-of-the-art equipment, and several offices, project developer Eric Hardoon said. Aesthetically pleasing amenities include a paved entrance, a six-and-a-halfacre pond, fountains, oaks and a lighted, public jogging trail. Hardoon is even toying with the idea of adding what he believes is Brevard’s first charging station for motorists with electric cars. “It’s going to be very high end, high class,” Hardoon said. “It’s going to stand out. It’s not going to be a typical strip mall. There will definitely be an upscale South Florida look. The whole area is going to be different. It’s going to be nice.” Suntree Viera Professional

Eric Hardoon plans for a onestop shop medical center, off Wickham Road in Suntree.

Park is the brainchild of Hardoon’s father, Dr. Abe Hardoon, who opened Suntree Internal Medicine in a 715-square-foot office in 2002, then moved his practice to a larger, 10,000-square-foot location on Jordan Blass Drive in 2004. Dr. Hardoon’s other son, Scott, joined the practice several years ago. Now Dr. Hardoon’s practice has outgrown itself once again and will move less than a quarter-mile to property he purchased on the east side of

Crews have been clearing land since early June, filling in a century-old cattle pond and burning small trees and brush, Eric Hardoon said. Environmentalists removed about 15 tortoises from the site and an archaeologist inspected the location to ensure it contained no artifacts. “The site was an absolute jungle,” Eric Hardoon said. A few larger trees that had to be removed will be replaced in the back of the facility through mitigation, he said. E “We’ve got about 46 trees, s beautiful oaks, we have to protect,” he said. “Some are almost 125 years old.” The project is expected to employ about 100 people, mostly medical professionals, Eric Hardoon said. “It’s truly going to be a onestop shop,” he said. “And if you’re in the assisted living facility, you can live there, too.” Suntree Internal Medicine hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. ‘Viera beach’ soon to open at Holiday Inn by Rae Botsford

Unique to most Holiday Inns — and most hotels — the Holiday Inn in Viera is adding a beach to it’s pool. “This is not a brand standard by any means,” said Ed Diaz, director of sales at the Holiday Inn MelbourneViera Conference Center. The new feature will be off the pool, replacing some existing landscaping, and made of crushed coquina rock. “They’ve laid it down, just layer upon layer, and then they have to wet it every night for like a month and then they put another layer down. So it’s very compact,” Diaz said. A stage will also be added to the area, and the hotel intends to offer live music on

Friday nights. “It’s going to be a great place for people who want to get married on the beach but yet they want to be centrally located here, or they want to take the elevator home,” Diaz said. He also cited its versatility for cocktail parties, small luaus and other such gatherings. “It’s going to be a really neat attraction, not only for our hotel but for the area,” he said. Which means the new beach is not reserved for hotel guests alone. “The pool is adjacent to the restaurant, so they can come to the restaurant, have a drink, and on Friday night they might have live music,” Diaz explained “so they’ll be free to have dinner in the restaurant, then grab a drink, and venture out onto the beach and have a

good time.” Diaz credits the hotel’s general manager, Samir Patel, with the idea for the beach. “He thought of it, and he’s seen it through from beginning to end.” The hotel is in the middle of a general upgrading process, including new “soft goods” like pillows and lamps, new furniture and a refurbished lobby. “The renovation itself is something that all hotels go through every few years,” said Diaz, “but [Patel] included the Viera beach, as we’re calling it, as part of that.” The beach is scheduled to be completed some time this month. For more information about the hotel, go to himelbournefl.com or call 321-255-0077. VV

Viera residents have three new businesses to frequent, particularly if they find themselves on the west side of town. A Crest Cleaners, Dunkin’ Donuts and Wren Insurance Agency opened their doors for business in June at the plaza located at 5525 Porada Drive — near Space Coast Stadium and Viera Pizza’s west-side location. The new plaza is owned by Crest Cleaners and there is still one more leasing space available. Keith Houston of Crest Cleaners said the purchase

Business gets bounce with Viera residential boom Ted and Jennie Girves moved to Viera in 2008 and witnessed the growth in the community first hand. The most popular birthday parties and other children’s events always seemed to share one feature in common, and it set a business plan in motion for the couple. “We have seen the demand for high-quality bounce houses in our area and have decided to open this exciting new business in Viera,” Ted Girves said. Viera Bounce and Slide’s grand opening event will be 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 12 at Eastwind Park, 5955 Tavistock Dr. in Viera. “You and your kids will not want to miss this awesome, free event, where all of our products will be displayed and ready for fun!” Girves said. and expansion of the company’s services to the Viera plaza just made sense. “Viera is the number one fastest area for growth in Brevard County,” he said. “We’re happy to be here.” The new Crest Cleaners location opened officially on June 10 and is the 11th one in Brevard County, but the first one in Viera. The last time Crest Cleaners opened a location was 10 years ago at Post and Wickham roads. “For us, everything revolves around service and quality. We like to be sure each new location we open can offer that,” Houston said. For Keith Johnson, opening up his fourth Brevard County Dunkin’ Donuts location in Viera was also an easy decision. “Viera is such a busy part of Brevard County. This is where the commerce is at,” he said. Johnson opened his doors

on June 11 and has been operating on a “soft opening” concept so far. “We are doing business without any advertising and letting everyone get the hang of the process first,” said Johnson. Even without a grand announcement of its opening, Johnson says that business has been steady and is growing every day. The Dunkin’ Donuts location has 22 seats inside, 12 seats outside and a fullyfunctioning drive through. It is open every day from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The third business in the plaza is Wren Insurance Agency and it is the satellite office of the original Palm Bay location. The locallyowned, independent insurance agency offers car, home, boat and life insurance, among many other options. VV

A graduate of Ohio University, Jamerson played four years of varsity basketball and earned a in bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance. Given the success at Holy Trinity, especially this past year when the school won its first Sunshine Cup award, Jamerson has no plans to come in with sweeping changes. He will work to keep the continuity going among the school’s athletic programs while also playing to his own strengths as a successful athletic director. “Coming from a business background (my strengths are) certainly helping to build our brand,” Jamerson said. “The different schools I’ve been at, I really helped grow the fundraising side of things, and facilities.” As for his overall philosophy, the Tigers’ new athletic director believes in putting faith in the people he oversees to bring out the best in the school’s student-athletes. “Having been at three different schools, I’ve seen

By Carl Kotala

As one of the premier youth baseball and softball programs in the county, the Viera/Suntree Little League has a tradition of churning out successful All-Star teams. This season figures to be no exception. With more than 650 children taking part in the league this year, the VSLL is coming off another strong regular season that it hopes will translate into the AllStar district tournaments which began late last month. “I think they’re going to do really well,” VSLL president Cris Smith said. “I especially think our 10 to 11 team for baseball is going to do pretty good, and our juniors team this year is going to do really well. With the departure of many of its snowbird members and the beginning of hotter weather, the Viera East Men’s Golf Association (VEMA) continued its formal golf season with a blinddraw, four-man team golf competition using the Stableford scoring method. Peter Maloney, John Gulla, Jim Donnelly and Bob Sobeck finished first; Gary Shiffrin, Raj Patel, Tom Campbell and Andy Mammay placed second; Jim Robinson, Tom Powell, Ed Raleigh and Tom Walker placed third; and Dennis Lamb, Ted Edlow, Richard Blakney and Jim Tautges tied Jim Smith, Dave Hogan, Bob Urban and Bill Oakley for fourth place. Steve Wing was closest-to-the-pin on No. 4, Peter Maloney was closest-to-the-pin on No. 7 amd No. 16 and Gary Shiffrin was closest-tothe-pin on No. 13. To celebrate the event, VEMA hosted a Flag Day-themed pizza party at the Viera East Residents Club for its members and their significant others. Special thanks goes to VEMA board members Robinson, Mammay, Gulla, Oakley and Patel and to their wives who helped make this event a success. Jack McGinn shot his age (82) on May 19 at Viera East Golf Course with playing partners Ray Shorts and Dale Zeigler.

continued from page 15 This year’s All-Star tournaments began on June 21 for the 9-10 and 10-11 baseball and softball teams. The remaining teams all began play June 28. Needless to say, the VSLL is hoping its players can stay busy this summer as they try to progress toward the state tournament, and hopefully, beyond. There is plenty of reason for hope. “We were pretty successful in the county tournament — we had two winners and one of our Majors baseball teams was in the county championship game, too,” Smith said. “All of our divisions did really well in the county tournament. “I think we have some pretty great managers

Oh, the humanities, at Suntree, Cocoa libraries By Linda Wiggins

Whether young or old, studying Western humanities can open our eyes to potential new joys in life. “Henry Ford said it so well: ‘Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young,’ ” said George V. Richards of Suntree. The retired humanities professor will teach “Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome” at the Suntree/Viera Library from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, July 19, 26 and Aug. 2. He’ll also teach it over four weeks at the Central Brevard Library in Cocoa from 10 a.m. to noon Thursdays, July 10, 17, 24 and 31. If you think it will be a staid collection of college lectures, think again, Richards said. The experience is more akin to a civilized interchange of ideas that may certainly advance to passionate debate, but

same. We use a lot of humor, which gets people excited and engaged,” Richards said. “If you want your horizons expanded, it’s the class you want to go to.” Richards received his bachelor’s degree in music from Stetson University in 1977, and went on to earn his master’s degree in church music from Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1980. He has been a featured soloist for the Bach Festival Choir in Winter Park and has recorded two CDs of music ranging from opera to jazz. “This course is all about learning why we like certain things through an introduction to the architecture, sculpture and philosophies of both ancient cultures,” said Richards, who taught at Rollins College Hamilton Holt School in Winter Park and the Valencia Community College system in Orlando. “When we discover things that bring us joy through beauty,” Richards said, “then we know where to look to find more things we will enjoy discovering. The purpose of studying the

humanities is to increase the options for enjoying the world in which we live. Everything we enjoy in art, literature, sculpture and architecture has been influenced by previous cultures. If we enjoy that part of the world in which we live, we ought to give credit to those who brought us here.” If there is sufficient interest, a second series will follow, covering the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque/Enlightenment Period and on to Post-Modernism. Nominal cost for the course is $20. Registration is through the library of choice. Call Suntree/Viera Library at 321-255-4405 and Central Brevard Library at 321-633-1792. The course can help young adults set a course for adventure in their budding careers, and can help seniors set new goals and find joy in their less-stressed years, Richards said. But one thing will be decidedly absent from the educational experience, he added. “There will not be a test.” VV

Want a STEM solution? Make it more fun By Linda Wiggins

For Athena Bauerle, it’s not enough to ply students with science, technology, engineering and mathematics — which make up the magical acronym STEM that is a promised panacea for current and future economic development in Brevard and across the nation. No, it must also be fun, said the former Brevard County Schools teacher who previously was an engineer for Lockheed Martin and Motorola and now hosts science workshops that look more like a toy store explosion. “If they are having fun and doing exciting hands-on projects, gaining a sense of pride and success, youth will be more likely to develop or grow an interest in STEM areas,” Bauerle said. This in mind, it is her dream to establish a STEM Center in Brevard. Basically, if a science center married an amusement park, this would be their baby. She will speak on the importance of STEM education and the need for a STEM Center at the 7:30 a.m. Friday, July 25 Suntree Rotary breakfast at Suntree Country Club. She is hoping to recruit community partners to help make the dream a reality. Until then, she is focusing on the matter at hand: student enrichment through her company, B-STEM Science. The “B” stands for Business. “How do you inspire our youth? B-STEM Science would like to see more STEM opportunities for youth in Brevard. Programs for homeschoolers, elementary, middle and high schoolers are key to keeping STEM interest

alive,” Bauerle said. Bauerle’s first push is to expand after-school programs for elementary schools. “B-STEM will provide hands-on, inquiry-and-designbased programs in multiple elementary schools starting this fall. Every student should be allowed the opportunity to pursue their interests in enrichment programs. Grants and other costsharing programs need to be enlisted to remove economic inequities,” she said. The next step is to establish middle-school STEM clubs to nurture student interests. “Another key is to forge partnerships between teachers and professionals; some high schools have excellent programs utilizing this approach, but B-STEM Science’s vision is to see opportunities equally spread throughout the county.” All the while, her ultimate dream will be simmering to a boil. “Ultimately, B-STEM Science envisions a STEM Center here in Brevard County to enrich lives and inspire all ages.” To RSVP for the July 25 Suntree Rotary breakfast, go to clubrunner.ca/Suntree, and for information on B-STEM Science, go to b-stemscience. com. B-STEM Science hosts workshops for youth ages 8 to 12 Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Interlachen Park, 409 Interlachen Rd. in Suntree, cost is $5, and from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursdays at Viera Community Center, 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, cost is $7. Saturdays 11 a.m. to noon at Viera Community Center are by appointment. Call 321-917-6699 to RSVP for all workshops. VV

“I’ll definitely keep up the one-on-one with each child,” Reed said. “Any time you have a child with a need for disciplinary action, it’s about building a relationship with that child with the goal of seeing changes in behavior down the road.” Witnessing “the light bulb go on” as he taught students inspired him to teach. Reed said he will miss relationships with Suntree children and their families the most. Students who were kindergarteners when he started at Suntree just had their sixth-grade graduation, and those who were sixth-graders will start college this fall. No one will be more missed in the exchange than Reed, said his former boss-turned-peer, Suntree principal Mecheall Giombetti. “He is very well loved and the new school is fortunate to have him. He deserves it,” Giombetti said. The DeLaura Middle School choir presented both a musical program and a collection of students’ handmade quilts and pillowcases to Joe’s Club. Receiving the quilts are Joe’s Club Ambassador Laurel Malbon and Activities Director Sonja Fauteux.

DeLaura students deliver Joe’s Club Intergenerational Program provides a meeting of the generations, the young and the seniors. Recently, the DeLaura Middle School choir presented a musical program for the members of Joe’s Club in Melbourne. The students also delivered several quilts and pillowcases that were handmade by students in the home economics class. Students handed out song sheets and invited everyone to join them in singing some old favorites. The senior club members thoroughly enjoyed visiting with the young people and were thrilled by the beauty of the colorful quilts and pillowcases. Toy invention teaches geometry, engineering to kids By Rae Botsford

Architect and veteran Mark Burginger upgraded his own invention, a children’s toy, last year, and is now trying to bring it to Central Florida. Qubits, which Burginger calls a “modular, open-ended construction toy,” comes in sets of plastic pieces which snap together in a variety of combinations and orientations. Children can use them to build objects like towers and bridges, or complex geometric shapes. Burginger began designing it back in the 1980s, when designer and architect Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller was still alive. “I was developing this whole geometric concept of the idea,” said Burginger, “and I would send him drawings that I did just because he would give me such good feedback.” Burginger and his wife, Lisa, were still living in Oregon in 2005 when he first truly invented Qubits. Inventor Woody Norris had just won the Lemelson-MIT Prize for his hypersonic sound system and wanted to use the prize money to help newbie inventors. Burginger wrote him a letter, and Norris gave him enough funding to get a patent and begin development. The first Qubits kits were manufactured in China and sold over the Internet. A few years later, he got an exclusive deal with Discovery Toys, and they sold about 7,000 of those kits. When the Burgingers moved to Florida, he realized he could improve his invention. This time he decided to do all the manufacturing in the United States, as close to their office as they could. “I think it’s a good business practice. You save on time,

Everything is more efficient that way,” he said. They found a manufacturing plant in Longwood and sold the qubits.com URL for startup capital. In computing, the term “qubits” refers to quantum bits, and a Canadian quantum computing company called D-Wave Systems was happy to buy the URL. “It was such a lucrative deal that I was able to then start up my toy company for the second time.” Marketing is still expensive, so he and his wife have taken to hosting Qubits Engineering Camps at museums, schools and libraries. They explain to children the importance of geometry in engineering, show them how to build specific types of objects, like a tower, and then just let them play. “It uses your imagination and it’s innovative in that way,” he said of the toy. Suntree Country Club wrapping up renovations

Viera Voice Mike Gaffey

Steve Lamontagne, Suntree Country Club’s general manager, says an expanded short-game practice area for golfers should be ready in September. By Mike Gaffey

Suntree Country Club’s five-year capital improvements plan is right on course. The private, 870-member club at 1 Country Club Drive recently wrapped up a fouryear, $1.5 million irrigation project that installed new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) piping throughout its Classic golf course, one of its two 18-hole courses. Workers also added, rerouted and resurfaced golf cart paths, built a “sport court” near the tennis courts, and should finish an expanded short-game

members’ enjoyment, but also for future members and to attract new members.” Chief among the improvements is an irrigation system that can water the club’s Classic Course quickly by means of state-of-the-art HDPE pipes that make underground leaks “nearly impossible,”

Lamontagne said. The pipes are heated at 450 degrees until they fuse together to form a seamless link, eliminating the need for fittings, he said. Work was completed in mid-June. “It’s the latest and greatest technology,” Lamontagne said. “In the last five to seven years, golf courses have

Electrical usage is down, too.” Golfers can work on their short game at a 1-acre practice area adjacent to the still-open driving range. The new chipping area will feature a raised green, giving golfers a variety of challenging shots. It will be sprigged with Celebration Bermuda grass, a hardy, more disease-resistant hybrid that also has been planted at the driving range, Lamontagne said. “Current members are very excited,” Lamontagne said. “This new short game chipping area is a big enhancement, not only to better practice facility usage but really to continue to learn the game of golf.” The facility’s new sport court across from the club’s main building features the same hybrid grass. It’s a place where members can play volleyball or beach tennis, Lamontagne said. “It’s also been a fantastic play area for kids at our summer camps,” he added. Established in 1975, Suntree Country Club once hosted the Senior PGA Tour on its Classic Course during the 1980s and early 1990s. Non-Suntree residents are welcome to join the country club, Lamontagne said. For membership information, call Eileen Bentley, director of membership, at 321-242-6252. VV

Suntree Master Homeowners Association day camp thrives with help from student volunteers by Rosemary H. Lynn and Rae Botsford

The Suntree Master Homeowners Association summer camp program is a successful six-week program that begins in May and ends in July each year. ‘White-knuckle’ incidents drive home need for Suntree traffic light By Linda Wiggins

Each time John Whalen pulls out of his Eagle’s Landing community in Suntree onto Wickham Road, he said he is taking his life into his hands. The traffic on the 7500 block of North Wickham Road has swelled in recent years along with residential development in north Melbourne and Viera, yet the four-way intersection does not have a light to manage its four lanes and two left-turn pockets. “I used to say, ‘Does someone have to die before we get a traffic light here?’ ” Whalen said. “Now I say, ‘Does someone else have to die?’ ” Whalen is referring to the March 22 death of a Suntree Viera Voice Linda Wiggins resident driving south on Forest Lake Avenue into the Eagle’s Landing homeowner John Whalen is urging Brevard County to install a traffic light on Wickham Road in Suntree to eliminate “white-knuckle” driving experiences at the four-way Forest intersection, turning left onto Wickham Road and Lake Avenue/Golden Eagle Court intersection, where a motorist was killed in March. into the path of an oncoming westbound vehicle. There’s no question that the intersection merits a traffic light, Brevard County District 4 Commissioner Mary Bolin Lewis said. The question is where the money will come from, estimated by Bolin Lewis’ office to cost from $350,000 upwards to $750,000 due to underground utilities in the area. “I would love to be able to do that, but there are a lot of residents throughout the district who need a lot of things and the list is long,” she added. Whalen, who serves on his Eagle’s Landing homeowners association board, has taken the matter to the Suntree Master Homeowners

Association to champion the cause. Both bodies have joined together to move the matter forward. The issue is so important that potential District 4 county commissioners are being vetted by the homeowners associations chiefly on their willingness to find funds necessary for the improvement, Whalen said.

“We are not going to stop until this is done.” —John Whalen

Bolin Lewis is serving her final year in office due to term limits. The primary election is in August and the final election in November. Whalen, who has written to transportation officials throughout the county and state — even to the governor’s office — said the process has been daunting, with little hope on the horizon. Then he speaks of the frequent car trips he and his wife must make out of the neighborhood’s only entrance, and those of the neighbors in his close-knit community who have become dear friends. He recounts white-knuckle experiences, one after another, until his tone changes. “But we are not going to stop until this is done,” he said. For more information on the effort to install a traffic signal, call 321-242-8960. VV

After 53 years of marriage, Suntree residents Lee and Vista Boyland not only finish each others’ sentences, they also finish each others’ books. For the past decade, the couple has been co-writing a series of techno-thriller novels. As Vista Boyland explained their writing process, she said, “The endearing part is he still surprises me through his writing. I fall in love all over again.” She said her husband takes criticism better than she does, but they share the common goal of using their fiction to educate. “We have readers all over the world,” she said. “People email us from Europe, South America and all over the United States, to tell us how much they have learned from our books.” The couple received Excellence in Writing Military Fiction awards from the Military Writers Association and Branson Missouri’s Stars and Flags for previous novels dealing with nuclear terrorism, pirates and cartels. Their newest novel, “Revolution 2016, Take Back America,” is a political-satire-thriller. The authors said they felt compelled to “address the disturbing political and societal changes occurring in America,” changes they feel are threatening our constitutional republic. The novel lampoons thinly veiled, real individuals by turning them into fictional archetypes.

Vista Boyland said she and her husband argued over writing only once in 10 years, while working on another book. “I despised a character. I tried to kill her off, but he wouldn’t let me. She was his token liberal.” She said she was embarrassed at a recent meeting of Brevard Federated Republican Women, when the president touted “Revolution 2016, Take Back America” by announcing, “There’s sex in it!” The writers had not included such content in their previous books, but said they felt it was appropriate to incorporate it in this one. Readers interested in purchasing “Revolution 2016” will find the book in softcover and Kindle at online booksellers, or locally at The Book Rack in Titusville and the Renninger’s Super Flea and Farmers Market Book Store at the Eau Gallie Boulevard exit off Interstate 95. demonstrations or how-to instructions. Experts say that since the creation of rich media and adoption of smart phones, advertisers use videos in their advertising. QR codes, combined with current marketing programs, take advertising to a new level. With smart phones selling for as little as $50, or free in some cases, more people are making the switch from regular cell phones and today’s savvy business owners now have mobile websites. These are websites that are smart phonefriendly, loading quicker and providing more than traditional websites. QR codes and smart phones work in as many ways as people can imagine. Some have been programmed to track event tickets, send electronic documents securely through the postal mail and track the hits on specific types of advertising to see what is influencing customers. Broome Law firm opens Viera office

New York the inspiration behind family business

By George White

By George White

Longtime Titusville attorney Chris Broome has opened a satellite office in Viera as a convenience to his clients in central Brevard County. The office which opened in January is at 7351 Office Park Place, Suite 152. “It opened in January and I’m there on a rotating basis once a week. It’s been convenient for clients and myself and it’s just a great area to be in,’’ Broome said. He specializes in probate, guardianship, estate planning (wills/trusts/advance directives), elder law and issues involving the elderly, contracts, real estate and litigation. Broome earned his B.A. in History at the University of Central Florida in 1988 and his Juris Doctor from the Stetson University College of Law in 1991. He is a member of both the Florida Bar and the Brevard County Bar Association. The Broome firm was started in 1972 by Chris Broome’s father, Charles Broome, who retired in 2004. The original office is at 915 S. Washington Ave., Titusville. “I’ve been the sole attorney here since then,’’ said Broome, who lives in Mims. His move to Viera was prompted by business in that area and long-range plans, he said. “I had clients that were in that area and this was an opportunity to serve clients in a new part of the county,’’ Broome said. The Viera office is home base for Broome once a week by appointment. “We’re hoping one day that it will be a fully-staffed office but right now we have a satellite office in Viera to serve the clients of the central part of the county,’’ he said. For more information, call 321-269-5620. VV

A longtime family business originating in New York City before World War II for the past 12 years has carried on locally at New York Pizza and Pasta Café, 6450 N. Wickham Rd., Melbourne. “My family has a restaurant in New York that’s called Flynn’s and been there since 1937 in Fire Island, N.Y. It’s a full restaurant, hotel bar and marina. I’ve grown up working in restaurants since I was 10 years old. My father, my three uncles and my grandfather all opened the place. We had more than 20 cousins that all worked there at one time,’’ said owner Curtis Flynn, now a 20-year resident of Florida. Flynn was an employee until he was asked if he wanted to purchase the business 12 years ago. He said he now has many loyal customers, some of whom he knows well enough for them to say “the usual.” But he is most proud to say that the business, formerly called Big Apple Pizza, survived the economic downturn back in 2006 when restaurant use declined sharply. “It’s been good. We’re not the busiest place in town but we’re steady. Nice and steady. That’s what we like,’’ he said. And now, the tradition continues through Flynn’s son John, 15, who has worked at the restaurant on a part-time basis for about a year, he said. “He started working much later than I did,” Flynn said. The family business in New York offered seafood Continental cuisine, with the Suntree location maintaining a menu of more traditional Italian fare. Popular dishes include pizza, grilled chicken artichokes and chicken alfredo, according to Flynn.

Conservation: you can make it happen

By Marcia Booth president and founder, Recycle Brevard

If you look in the dictionary, conservation is defined as “the protection

to accomplish, but many local organizations and individuals are committed to make it happen. In April, the inaugural Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards, sponsored by Viera Voice, revealed some of those individuals in our community and brought 180 people into the same room. Among them were leaders and passionate supporters of all kinds of organizations that cover distinct grounds of conservation from recycling to caring for injured wildlife. For a true believer in partnerships, in working together to get best results and accomplish more like me, it was beautiful to see so many different faces coming together to celebrate conservation. WinShape Camp a success

Calvary Chapel Melbourne’s Viera Campus hosted 180 children in one of two WinShape Christian summer camps held in Brevard in June, the other at the church’s main Melbourne campus. The response was overwhelmingly positive, said Heather Profit, Women’s Ministry director at the Viera campus and camp coordinator for the church. WinShape Camps for Communities is a program sponsored by Chick-fil-A, which has a restaurant in Viera, and created by restaurant-chain founder Truett Cathy. “We were very proud to be the church selected to host the camps in Brevard,” Profit said. “Based on the positive response this first year, we anticipate doubling the number of campers served next year.” The weeklong day camps are competitively priced, but available regardless of a family’s ability to pay, Profit said. About 75 children received at least a partial Viera voice Jill Gaines scholarship, she added. For more information, call Profit at 321-952-9673, ext. Ruthee Magrini relocated to Viera from Ohio four years ago and soon established herself as an important member of the Ruthee Magrini community. The “Boomer Guide” model has been named General Florida Women’s Club District 6 Volunteer of the Year. District 6 covers

Brevard, Flagler and Volusia counties. Magrini picked up litter along Murrell Road each month, planted Florida native plants at the Viera Wetlands and worked to make the Viera Woman’s Club Snow Ball dinner-dance auction. She collected and delivered donations to women’s shelters and transitional homes, wrote three grants, worked with Keep Brevard Beautiful, served lunch at Canine Companions for Independence in Ocoee, and organized collection and delivery of holiday gifts from club members for Meals on Wheels. The former recording secretary participated with Viera Singers at Alzheimer’s and senior facilities, entered photography in Woman’s Clubs’ art shows, sewed pillowcases for children in group homes and recruited many new club members. Church reaches out to children in need Volunteers at Church at Viera assembled nearly 600 packages of food June 22 to nourish school children during the weekends. George Stevens, CAV children’s pastor, coordinated the event with Ric Speigner, principal at Rockledge Christian School, which serves many low-income families. “We were looking for a way for our elementary and preschool Vacation Bible School students to make an immediate impact on our local community. We so often forget about the need in our own backyard as we focus on world missions,” Stevens said. Children raised $3,600 in one week, enough to provide 25 children with meals throughout the year. “What an amazing church, and what incredible children,” Speigner said. The money is used to purchase nonperishable food items to be sent home each Friday in select students’ backpacks. For more information, go to thechildrenshungerproject.org. VV

Leptospirosis on the rise in suburbia By Ian Birkbeck, DVM Island Animal Hospital at Viera

A recent rise in cases of leptospirosis in Florida has brought increased attention to this uncommon but serious disease. Earlier this spring, the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine reported that there had been 12 infected patients referred to the hospital in the previous six months. Leading up to that period, the disease was rarely seen at the facility. The rise has been observed in other parts of the state as well. Potentially lethal and able to spread to humans as well as dogs, it’s a disease that should be taken very seriously. In this article, I’ll outline the important things to know so you can be informed and keep your pets Leptospirosis is a bacterial

infection that can affect dogs and people. It is most commonly spread by rodents, raccoons, possums and other forms of mammal wildlife. Many of these wild animals can be carriers of the disease, but show no symptoms. The bacteria is passed in the urine and infects dogs or people through contact with mucous membranes (eyes, nose or mouth) or damaged skin. The urine remains a potential source of infection as long as it is wet. If standing water such as a lake or pond becomes contaminated, the bacteria may remain viable and infectious for weeks to months. If infected, a dog may develop the acute form, consisting of flu-like symptoms such as lethargy, fever, vomiting and muscle

tenderness. The bacteria causes varying degrees of inflammation and damage to the kidneys and liver. Severe cases can lead to failure of these organs and death. The chronic form may manifest as increased urination and thirst as well as decreased appetite. If treated early, patients may have a full recovery. Some may suffer lasting permanent damage to the liver or kidneys. There are different ways of testing for the disease, including trying to detect it directly or by measuring a pet’s immune response to the disease and comparing levels of antibodies. Treatment of the disease consists of antibiotic medication to reduce the amount of the infectious agent present, as well as controlling any other symptoms such as muscle
