Artists “paint around” for a cause By Linda Wiggins
Great artists are known for having strong, larger-than-life personalities, said one Viera artist, but when they all get together for a good cause, it’s time to check the egos at the door. Lolly Walton is one of five watercolor artists who will perform an “artists paint-around” Friday morning, Nov. 8 at the Backstage Pass Boomer Bash & Senior Expo. Their combined, co-opted works created on the spot against the clock will be auctioned off that afternoon to benefit the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation. “If you’re not careful, you can start off as friends and end as enemies. Wait, come to think of it, wouldn’t that make a good show?” Walton said, followed by her trademark contagious laugh. “Seriously, it’s all for a very important cause, raising money for elder-care services during November’s National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. That makes it deeply rewarding, and the camaraderie with other very experienced artists is super enjoyable.” The event starts with all artists seated, each pulling out paper on which they have already composed, or drawn, a basic outline of what will become the finished work. All works must incorporate a purple balloon for Alzheimer’s awareness.

The Brevard Zoo will host its fourth annual Jazzoo event from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. The tag line for the evening’s festivities is “a tapestry of musical and epicurean adventures.” Attendees should expect a sophisticated, fun and grown-up zoo experience. “The zoo normally offers so many things for kids, but there are plenty of adults that love the zoo too,” said Karen Davis, director of development. “Jazzoo is a whole new way to experience the zoo and to have a lot of fun at the same time.” Four musical acts will perform simultaneously in different parts of the zoo, including jazz musician Jackiem Joyner and local surf rock favorite Danny Morris. Fans of country music can jam with the All About Nothing Band, while in another area the Irish strains of the Kindred Spirits Band accompanies traditional step dancers. “Jazzoo is about an appreciation of all music,” Davis said. “We will have a lot of variety this year and people can wander from one stage to the next.”

that makes them particularly special to introduce during our 20th birthday celebration,” Davis said. “The Brevard Zoo was built completely by the hands and money of volunteers and that feeling of community remains today.” To purchase tickets for Jazzoo, stop by the Brevard Zoo ticket office, call 321-254-9453, ext. 234, or go to Brevardzoo.org/calendar/ jazzoo. After Nov. 1, the cost of tickets will go up to $85. VV

For the price of the ticket, supporters will also help fund the next piece of Brevard Zoo history. When the Zoo celebrates its 20th birthday in March, a permanent meerkat exhibit will open. In order for it to be completed, an additional $300,000 must still be raised. In past years, the money generated at Jazzoo went to a general zoo fund. This year, all of the proceeds will go directly to the meerkat project. “Meerkats are so community oriented and

While the price tag of attending the zoo’s largest fundraiser, Safari Under the Stars, might be out of the price range of many supporters, Jazzoo is easier on the wallet. For $75 per ticket, attendees get admission to all the musical acts and can partake of all the food and drinks. More than 25 local restaurants have committed to donating and manning areas serving a variety of options from Thai food to cocktails. “We are blessed to have such an active community and businesses that are always willing to support zoo events,” Davis said.

Celebrating Veterans Day is a decadesold tradition at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy and this year’s event will feature a very special guest speaker. Retired U.S.. Army Capt. Jeff Ryals will be the school’s honorary guest at this year’s ceremony, which will take place at the school’s upper and lower campuses. Ryals is a Holy Trinity alumnus and his father, Jack, is on the school’s board of trustees. The Lower School event will begin at 8:20 a.m. at 50 West Strawbridge Ave., while the Upper School event will start at 2 p.m. at 5625 Holy Trinity Drive. The public is welcome to attend both ceremonies. A slide show depicting family and friends of students who have served in the military will be part of the Lower School presentation. Originally, the idea was that Ryals would make his appearance via Skype. Instead, he will fly in from Germany, and perhaps bring
a family heirloom — a steel-covered Bible, which generations of Ryals have kept in the pocket over their heart. The idea was that the Bible would help protect against a potential bullet wound. It has been passed down through the Ryals family. Jeff had it with him in Afghanistan and Iraq. Brandy Bean, who works in the school’s advancement department, said both the upper and lower schools are going through a character education program that focuses on veterans, particularly Wounded Warriors. The Veterans Day event helps bring home to the students how important it is to recognize the sacrifices veterans have made for this country. “In addition to the speakers, there is music, and all the veterans are invited to stand as they’re introduced — their branch of service, the dates that they served,” Bean said. “It’s a really touching ceremony. “… It’s a really eye-opening event for the students.” VV

Viera’s Festival of Trees features original art masterpiece and more By linda wiggins
Shoppers at the Junior League of South Brevard’s 29th annual Festival of Trees in Viera may come away with an original, hand-painted masterpiece. Fifty of them. Member artists and owners of the Fifth Avenue Gallery in the Eau Gallie arts district of Melbourne have decorated their tree with 50 framed watercolor originals that capture old Florida charm, local wildlife and area founding industry giants from citrus to space. “We love that the Junior
League has a passion for caring for women and children, because that is our heart, too,” said Lois Mittleman of Viera, one of the gallery’s 17 member artists. “We all put in a lot of our time and our artistic talent to create this permanent legacy that we hope will generate a sizable donation for its purchase.” The fully decorated tree and hundreds of other uniquely designed and decorated creations will be available for purchase at the Viera Regional Community Center from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 16, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17. Shoppers can simply take away a tree and plug it in at home. The festival is also known for ornate holiday wreaths, home décor and early Christmas shopping, the weekend awash in sweets, entertainment, children’s games and crafts. The Junior League of South Brevard is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable, according to its website. The Fifth Avenue Gallery artists hope their tree will inspire Festival of Trees shoppers to visit the gallery’s Christmas Store exhibit that runs through Jan. 5. The Junior League office shares the same Eau Gallie neighborhood. For member artist BethAnne Fairchild, both events are a throwback to her roots as the original owner

Viera girls win 6th consecutive district title; boys 4th By Carl Kotala
At the same time, the Hawks have much loftier goals. Winning their sixth consecutive district title behind even-par 72 from medalist Michelle Hawkins put them in position to achieve them. “We’re tickled to death to keep that streak going, THE MISSING LINK IN HEALTHCARE! but our sights are set a little higher than that this year,” Viera girls coach Greg Ford said. “We’re looking to get (CHAD Services) through regionals and move toward the state finals. as Cape Coast Conference (CCC) champions. “The links at Royal St. Cloud provided a good test for our junior golfers,” Viera boys coach Paul Bentley said. “Alex Liles finished tied for second place with 73. Some of the boys had a tough time out there, especially when you compare their scores to what they shot at CCC. “… The team is looking forward to next year as we return a bunch of underclassmen.” Gagliardi advanced to the regionals by shooting 77. Other team members included Ryan Rozic, Tyler Greek and Jordan Cummings. For the girls, sophomore Taylor Rajeski finished third with 77, while freshman Samantha Brimhall tied for sixth with 85. Samantha Dahl had 91 and Carli Ford had her best tournament score ever with 92. “I tell you what, she’s a solid player,” Ford said of Brimhall. “We know that she can go out there and give us an 80 to 85 every time out. It’s nice to know we can count on that. She’s only a freshman, but she’s got a lot of tournament experience. “The top two (Hawkins and Rajeski), they speak for themselves. They’re both so strong mentally and physically, and their golf games are sound and solid.”

Viera girls soccer team has plenty of depth
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
Viera High seniors Hannah Fish, left, Kendall Hester, Mariah Lewis and Kelsey Keesecker will be the leaders on a very deep, talented Hawks girls soccer team this season. By Carl Kotala
The Viera High girls soccer team knows it’s going to be in for some tough matchups this season … and that’s just in practice. “Every day is a battle,” senior Hannah Fish said. “You play your teammates and you just be the best you can be on the field.” Thanks to an influx of young, talented players from Viera’s junior varsity and freshmen teams, the Hawks certainly won’t be lacking in talent up and down their roster. “We have a very, very deep team this year,” Courtney Baines-Lundy said. “We told the girls there are possibly 18 starters, which is a very good problem to have.” Viera opened its season on Oct. 28 at Cocoa Beach, followed by a home game Oct. 30 against Bayside. With so many talented, but young players on the roster, the Hawks will need some strong senior leadership. Fortunately, they’ve got it in Fish, Mariah Lewis, Kelsey Keesecker and Kendall Hester. Baines-Lundy praised Lewis — who was a team captain last year as well — for her ability play midfield or defense and is
fun to watch because she is so sound technically and tactically. Fish, a defender, is another team leader and someone the coach said other players look up to while Keesecker, who also plays on defense, is the team motivator and a constant communicator during games. Hester, meanwhile, is a field player who is making a sacrifice for the betterment of the team by playing goalkeeper. As part of their preparation for this season, a group of eight to 10 players — including all four seniors — took part in a leadership group led by former UCF player Ali (Blagriff) Goff. “We talked about how winning is just one aspect of the game, and how being a team means more,” Lewis said. The players also came away with the notion that instead of thinking about their Nov. 6 showdown with district rival Melbourne, the Hawks are going to take a onegame-at-a-time approach. So don’t ask them about Melbourne. They’re putting all of their focus on Cocoa Beach. “We’re not underestimating any team this year,” Fish said. VV

Viera bowlers look toward postseason By Carl Kotala
Other girls on the roster include freshman Kellie Jensen, freshman Kaylin Machado, junior Faith Paddon, senior Angie Ramires, senior Natalie Williams and freshman Judy Shirhall. The boys, meanwhile, are led by one of the county’s top prep bowlers in senior Greg Young, who was averaging 232 with high games of 284 and 279 this season. Franza, also a senior, was averaging 206. Other boys on the roster include junior Evan Keeney,
It’s postseason time for the Viera High boys and girls bowling teams, who closed out their regular season with differing results. The boys defeated Heritage 6-1 behind Patrick Franza’s 227 to finish 9-5, while the girls dropped a 5-2 decision to fall to 2-12. Jamie Schlegel threw 142 to lead the Hawks in that one. With four freshmen on an eight-player roster, the Viera girls are a young team, which means their best years are ahead of them. Schlegel, a freshman, leads the team with a 141 average. Senior Maria Roca is second on the team with an average of 126.
sophomore Julian Lawson, senior Ryan Mullins and freshman Max Rosser. The Hawks finished the regular season in a fiveway tie for fifth place, which should make for an interesting postseason. They bowled the Cape Coast Conference tournament Oct. 22 at Shore Lanes in Palm Bay, and the district tournament the following week. The state tournament is scheduled for Nov. 6 and 7 at the Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando. VV

The three Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy boys players stood there and answered almost in unison: “State. State. State.” That’s the goal of seniors George Winsten, Jake Bacon and Evan Enders, who are pushing to become part of the first Holy Trinity team in school history to ever reach the Class 1A Final Four. While that goal is hardly uncommon among teams at this time of year, the difference for the Tigers is they actually have a legitimate shot at getting there. “It’s basically the most talented team of individuals I’ve had in my eight years here,” Holy Trinity coach James Phillips said. “Whether they’ve got the same passion and desire to win as the teams I’ve had in the past kind of remains to be seen, but they’ve got the potential to go further than we’ve ever gone before.” Holy Trinity’s best previous finish was the Class 1A regional final. Last year’s team lost 1-0 in double overtime to St. Edward’s in the district semifinals, a defeat that hasn’t lost its sting. “It still does,” Bacon said. “(We think about it) every day. Every game we’re going to come out and try our best not to let that happen.” A big advantage for the Tigers this season is that much of the team is back from last season, which as Enders said, gives the players a chance to build a lot of team chemistry. Holy Trinity players also attended the Florida Tech soccer camp during the summer, where they really had a chance to bond together. “We all know each other pretty well,” Winsten said.

Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy seniors Jake Bacon, left, George Winsten, center and Evan Enders have set a goal to lead their Tigers team further than it has ever gone before. “We didn’t have that as much in the past.” Joined by sophomore Luca Campanini, the Tigers have a mixture of older and younger players who have experience. “We have more kids that play club soccer here than we’ve had on any team, I
think, at Holy Trinity, ever,” Winsten said. “…We have a lot of talent. It’s just going to be whether we can work or not.” With a high-powered offensive attack led by Enders — one of the top goal scorers in the county — the Tigers have a chance to go far. VV

The Viera High boys soccer team may have a new coach, but the Hawks may also have a built-in advantage. A number of them have been playing on a team together since this past summer. “We have a lot of guys who play for Space Coast (United Soccer Club),” senior Ryan Kelliher said. “I think there are seven or eight of us and we have the same coach (Scotty Armstrong), so I think we’re really going to come together and work well as a team. We’ll have a unity.” That could have a big payoff for the Hawks, who last won a district title and advanced to the regional playoffs when players like Kelliher and Matt Bolles were just freshmen at Viera. “I’m hungrier than ever before,” Bolles said. “I want to beat all the big teams in our district and go as far as we can. I believe we can make it to the states.” Leading the way for Viera will be new coach Cory

I’ve only heard great things about him.” The Hawks will rely heavily on their senior leadership, which will come from Bolles, Kelliher, Zak Mercer, Alex Meder, Chris Bula, Brandon Sebree, Oliver Elliott, Grant Wright and Max Stinson. The Hawks opened the season Oct. 29 and 30 with games at Melbourne High against Montverde Academy and Treasure Coast. Though Collins has not been around the players very long, he has seen enough of them to know this about his new team: They are determined to be successful this season their most successful yet. “In the past, I don’t think they’ve had the success they’ve expected, so I think this year they’re really pushing for it,” Collins said. “You can tell from the players, even on this first day (of practice), that they really want this season to be successful and the postseason to be even more successful.” VV

Viera artist turn rocks and gears into art By GeorGe White
The journey for Viera artist Beverly Morgan to show at ArtWorks has taken many different mediums and now unique jewelry making. The ArtWorks Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 24. Founded in 1996, the ArtWorks Festival is a ‘plein-air’ show in Melbourne that takes place in the historic district of Eau Gallie. All artists exhibit their skills with public
demonstrations. Held annually the weekend before Thanksgiving, the ArtWorks of Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival centers around the Highland Avenue area of Eau Gallie, considered by many to be the “cultural heart of the Space Coast.” ArtWorks also utilizes the talents of local musicians (including local high school ensembles) and local food vendors. “I’ve done ArtWorks I think five or six times. I really like that show,’’ Morgan said. Morgan actually could demonstrate several

ARTWORKS continued from page 20 of art classes. I decided to take a two-week jewelry class to do something with all the rocks and gemstones I had bought,’’ Morgan said. The resulting jewelry — including a new industrial style called “Steam punk jewelry” — keeps Morgan busy being creative. “I did a lot of painting and I’ve sold paintings at art shows. I switched to jewelry 10 years ago because it’s easier to carry, the price points are more reasonable,’’ she said. Now comfortable with her new art, Morgan looks forward to Artworks. “It’s one of my favorite shows because they treat the artists so well,’’ she said. New music programs thrive at Quest
VIERA VOICE Katie Parsons
Quest Elementary’s strings group learns the proper way to handle their bows. By Katie Parsons
A few mornings each week, music is made at Quest Elementary School in Viera before the sun even comes up. Three extracurricular music programs at Quest give more than 100 students the opportunity to hone their ability to read music, perform and socialize with other young musicians. “Students learn so much more than how to read music,” said Quest music teacher Laurie Foote. “They learn selfconfidence and teamwork too.”

The chorus program has 40 students in third to sixth grade and there are 45 students each in separate band and strings groups for fourth to sixth graders. Some of the students overlap between the groups. Patricia Zocchi is in sixth grade and she participates in the strings and band programs at Quest. She plays the cello in strings and the clarinet in band. “I like that I’m learning to play more than one instrument,” said 12-year-old Zocchi. “It is actually a lot of fun coming in before school to
practice.” Fellow cello player Bryce Doby also enjoys the early morning music sessions before his other fifth-grade studies. “I love classical music,” said 10-year-old Doby. “The cello just has such a super mellow sound too. That’s why I love it.”
Viera High School orchestra director Jameson Tucker often visits strings rehearsals at Quest and other area elementary schools. He says that programs like the one at Quest really make a difference in the level of talent he sees when kids arrive in his

classroom. “These programs are so foundational and so important to music programs throughout school careers,” Tucker said. “Most of these kids have never had formal lessons. They learn here at our elementary schools.” The strings and chorus programs have been in place since Quest opened 10 years ago, but the band program is only in its second year. “Our pilot program for band last year was so successful that we decided to expand it this year to include both beginning and intermediate students,” said Foote. “These students really work hard at this age, and truly love music.” All three music programs have upcoming concerts to showcase what they have learned. The strings and band programs will perform in a combined instrumental winter concert at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. The chorus will perform the musical “The Big Chill” at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12. VV

Odom’s State Farm office gave the school a 13-gallon trash bag full of ink cartridges to recycle. The postage is paid for by the FundingFactory, which has been operating since 1997 and has given out more than $35 million to schools and nonprofit organizations throughout the country. It is a 100-percent free program and it pays for all acceptable items, regardless of condition. It has had more than 50,000 schools or organizations participate. With economic times being so tough, programs like this one can obviously provide a huge benefit. Quest is happy to accept donations. “We’re always looking for any (help),” Reiter said. “We’ve got a box in the front office if anybody in the community wants to drop off any of the items.” VV

In what can only be considered a win-win situation for both the school and the environment, students in Susan Reiter’s Resource Gifted Studen Enrichment Program are learning to help keep the planet a little cleaner, and raise a little money as well. They are taking part in a recycling project where donated ink cartridges, laptop computers, kindles, iPods, iPads, MP3 players, digital cameras, GPS devices, headsets and, of course, cell phones, are shipped to the FundingFactory. According to the FundingFactory website, the group and its partners have helped recycle over 64 million pounds of electronics. Quest’s gifted program, known as Explorations, has 74 students this year, ranging from the first grade to the sixth. The money raised from the recycling project goes to
help pay for resources and materials for their classes. “We get money for what we recycle and we provide the service of not allowing the stuff to go to landfills and other places like that to pollute the earth, so it ends up working well for both parties,” Reiter said. Doing a service project is a requirement of all gifted programs in Brevard County. “We’re always looking for some particular way to provide a service,” Reiter said. “In the past, we’ve done a variety of different things. One year, we did a reading book-a-thon.” The recycling project, which began last school year, has been a big hit with the students. “They are very enthused about it,” Reiter said. “This year, the big change is that we’ve gotten two businesses who have stepped up to help us.” Lockheed Martin donated one month’s worth of all its ink and laser cartridges, while Dan

The clock is set for 15 minutes, and when the buzzer sounds, they must relinquish their original piece and circulate it to the next artist. They will then have another 15 minutes to stroke colors onto the painting they receive, until all five artists have worked on each piece. “It’s tricky, because you really have to stay with the original artist’s basic color scheme and style. You can’t have earth tones and realism, and lay down, say, bold neon colors in abstract.” The artists paint-around is one of several entertaining or informative attractions at the Boomer Bash & Senior Expo. The day kicks off at 9 a.m. with the largest Veterans Day salute in Brevard on the King Center Main Stage, with a live patriotic concert by the Melbourne Municipal Band, and military exhibits all day. “When you do a paint-around, you always bring your best, not only because you want someone to donate lots of money to hang it on their wall forever,” Walton said, “but because your name is going to be signed on the bottom with everyone else’s.” For more information about the Boomer Bash & Senior Expo or the paint-around, call 321-242-1235. Moving Tribute comes to King Center By Linda Wiggins
VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins
The Moving Tribute appears each year at the 9/11 memorial at Wickham Park pavilion.
It is a poignant year for Some Gave All, the Rockledge nonprofit dedicated to honoring those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks against America. It is the first Veterans Day since founder Kenneth “Bill” Cox passed away in July. His 28-panel Moving Tribute will be on display at the 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8 Special Veterans Salute that kicks off the Boomer Bash & Senior Expo at the King Center in Melbourne. The Moving Tribute features the names of the nearly 3,000 civilians and first responders who perished on 9/11, and the

names of fallen U.S. heroes from Desert Storm and Desert Shield who gave their lives in response across battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan. “It’s very sad that he is gone, but his mission in life was that the Moving Tribute would go on after him, and we are seeing his legacy continue,” said Kim Cone, executive director and co-founder with husband Garren Cone of AVET Project, which seeks to honor veterans, alleviate their suffering from mental and physical injuries sustained in military service, and help them access needed benefits. Some Gave All co-founders Bill and wife Norma (Fox) Cox have traveled all over the Southeast Region with the Moving Tribute. “He felt this story was important to tell and keep telling so that we would not forget it,” Norma Fox said. Cox had a story of his own to tell, but that was never important to him. He served with the 11th Cavalry Blackhorse Infantry in Vietnam, for which he received the Purple Heart and other commendations. He was a life member of VFW Rocket Post 4534, life member of Amvets Post 863, member of American Legion Post 359, Moose Lodge 1717, Semper Fidelis of America and Vietnam Veterans of Brevard. What was important to Cox is that civilians would remember the sting of personal attack brought on by 9/11, lest they forget that soldiers are fighting for them “over there.” His passion sparked a donation campaign to create and etch the imposing black panels. Likewise, maintenance of the panels is covered by donations. The sale of Moving Tribute T-shirts helps to cover gasoline and other costs for transport. All of the team members required to transport and erect the panels are volunteers. For more information about Some Gave All’s Moving Tribute, call 321-749-4172. VV

County offers surplus goods for sale
By Flora Reigada
Whether you need a computer, file cabinet, wrist watch, medical examining table, an ice machine or any number of things, it might just be at a Brevard County surplus sale. “We sell equipment no longer used by county departments. They are things that needed to be replaced, were broken or have become obsolete,” said asset manager, R. Shannon Maginnis. “The purpose is to put the items back into use and to save people money.” The sales take place every three to four months, depending on when warehouses fill up. There are also one or two vehicle and heavy equipment auctions per year. Miscellaneous items are offered for sale at a Titusville warehouse. There are a lot of electronics, such as computers, monitors, printers, fax machines and televisions. During sales, the public is invited to browse and make bids on the merchandise. On site, bid sheets are provided. Bids may also be made via the U.S. mail. Everything is sold “as is.” Maginnis said people are encouraged to test the equipment before it is purchased. “We have a desk where a computer or monitor

The Titusville warehouse contained numerous van seats. There were also desks and tables, as well as clothing. Home appliances were available. Maginnis explained that because fire and rescue personnel live on site when on duty, surplus sales may include their washing machines, dryers, microwave ovens and dishwashers. The county will occasionally offer merchandise recovered by the sheriff’s department. It might be jewelry or tools, as well as DVD’s, X boxes and video games, which Maginnis said are “high-theft items.” Unsold property may be palletized and bid on. As sales approach they are
announced in newspapers. The asset management website is also updated at least 30 days in advance. The website lists items for sale and explains the conditions of sale. The asset management department is located at the Titusville warehouse: 760 South Park Ave. Building 2, in Titusville. Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy Lower School fourth-graders Angela Durso, Joey Garcia and Linda Kelce load food for donation to families in need of a Thanksgiving meal, with head of Lower School Cathy Koos and director of Student Life Jo Ellen Williams. By George White
The generosity surrounding Thanksgiving at both Holy Trinity Upper and Lower Schools has prompted school officials to get bigger bins to hold food and items for local families in need. “We start a month before Thanksgiving and we have a list of what each class will bring and the families of that class will bring in those items. The children decorate the baskets. We collect so much that we needed bigger bins.
We‘re hoping to be able to fit it all in. Last year we had more than 1,500 pounds total,’’ said Jo Ellen Williams, director of Student Life at the lower school. “We plan out the entire meal and we make sure they have a gift certificate to purchase a turkey from Publix. It was $25 but we asked if we could move it up to $30 this year because we felt like they needed a little more,’’ she said. Personal items and some smaller toys also are included for the 28-30 Lower School
recipient families, said head of Lower School Cathy Koos. “We try and get the ages and if there’s young children they’ll buy diapers,’’ she said. Worthy recipients are supplied by Holy Trinity Episcopal, St. John’s Episcopal, Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ congregations, she said. “We spend a lot of time helping our kids understand what they’re doing. It was nice for them to understand that sometimes good people can be continued to page 31

There is typically enough money left over to include a $25 Publix gift card in each basket,’’ said math teacher Matt Dopira. On the last day of the food drive, the baskets are taken from the classrooms and offices to the auditorium, where an In-Gathering is held. “This is an Eucharist Service in which the baskets are blessed, then carried to the awaiting vehicles for transport to the Dorcas Outreach Center for Kids (D.O.C.K.),’’ he said. Bad dog or cat breath may be a symptom that your pet has dental disease. By Ian Birkbeck, DVM Island Animal Hospital at Viera
What is “dental disease? In veterinary medicine, “dental disease usually refers to the process in which bacteria builds up on the surface of teeth. Without regular brushing, bacteria in your pet’s mouth accumulates and forms a yellowish layer of material on teeth called a biofilm. This biofilm is what’s known as dental plaque or tartar. This plaque, essentially an infection, causes inflammation of the surrounding tissues. Redness where the gums meet the teeth (gingivitis) is one example of such inflammation. The inflammation loosens the tooth attachment, creating a pocket alongside the tooth that the bacteria can then move into. If allowed to progress, the infection can lead to periodontal disease, an infection of the bone of the jaw. Left untreated, dental disease leads to pain and a foul odor. Also, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and end up in the heart or kidneys, causing serious health problems. Over time, the plaque becomes a rock-hard substance called calculus. Once calculus is formed, special methods are required to safely and effectively remove it. This is best accomplished by your veterinarian. I’ll outline the general process here, although there will be some variation between veterinarians. What does a dental cleaning involve?
of infection and discomfort than to allow it to progress further. Dogs and cats can continue to eat dry food even after having multiple extractions. Dental cleaning is usually an outpatient procedure, meaning pets are able to go home the same day. Some may require soft food for a day or so if there were extractions, but after that they can return to normal activity. I frequently receive questions from clients regarding general anesthesia (where the pet’s “asleep) during dentals and why it’s required. There are several reasons. First, dental instruments must be sharp to be used properly. These sharp tools could potentially injure your pet or the veterinarian if the patient is not immobilized. Second, the plaque should be removed below the gum line when necessary. This cannot be done with an awake animal. Removing just the plaque is a cosmetic procedure only, allowing an infection below the gum line to spread. Third, when removing dental plaque, there is a risk of inhaling water or bacteria fragments, which could lead to pneumonia. When under anesthesia, the pet’s airway is protected by an endotracheal tube. Humans don’t require anesthesia for similar procedures because we’ll lie there motionless, mouth open, holding our breath when needed. That’s asking a lot of even the most wellbehaved dog or cat. Call your veterinarian to discuss recommendations for dental cleaning and your pet’s oral health in general. A dental cleaning may be needed to help make your pet happier and healthier. And getting rid ofthat doggie breath is a nice bonus. VV
Your veterinarian may recommend or require bloodwork prior to the procedure. This is to ensure your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia or to identify any risks that can affect the anesthesia plan (drug choices, for example). The first part of a dental cleaning is a thorough exam of your pet’s mouth. The space between the teeth and gums is probed with a measuring tool to identify any pockets. The findings of the oral exam are frequently recorded on a chart in the patient’s record, which can be used for comparison in the future. The calculus is then Quality products for your pet removed above and below the gum line with 3695 Murrell Road • Rockledge an ultrasonic scaler, an instrument that uses high frequency vibration to clean the teeth. Many people report that their cat or dog has bad breath. While many pets tend to eat or chew on things that may not exactly be minty fresh, that unfortunate odor that greets you at the door could be a sign of something more serious. Training makes team a fire-fighting medical machine 3rd in a 4-part series December features Station #48 By Linda Wiggins
Firefighter paramedic Andrew Daly burst into the burning building to thick smoke and zero visibility. He would have to feel his way blindly to snatch the victim he knew lay inside. Aided by thermal imagery, he could discern the heat of the flames from the cooler inanimate objects, in search of 98.6 degrees and a visible human outline. Suntree’s Brevard County Fire Rescue Station 80 is ready for the real thing. And stays ready. The Oct. 25 training
operation is one of many drills Daly’s team performs so that when the call comes, actions will flow from body memory, leaving the brain to deal with the variables each call brings. The closer the drill is to real life, the better. “The actual hands on is what makes you better,” said Daly, a member of the A Shift at Station 80. Firefighters work a 24-hour shift every third day, on shift A, B or C, sleeping dorm style each night between emergencies. Two additional firehouses serve the Suntree/Viera area, Station 47 in East Viera and Station 48 in Viera west of Interstate 95. There is ongoing book instruction. There is briefing
on new equipment. But the real education comes through drills of every conceivable emergency to the degree they are experienced in real life. “It’s important that we know exactly where the equipment is stored on the truck, who is responsible for what, what the limitations are for yourself and that equipment,” said Lt. Aaron Pritchard, the leader of 80’s A shift. “You don’t want to be figuring that out on a call when seconds mean the difference between life or death, including your own.” Frequent drills make even the most apparently simple steps count. “It would seem easy to take

FIREFIGHTERS continued from page 34 Some of the more unusual calls firefighter paramedics train for may include extracting a person stuck in a well or a pipe, which may involve dangerous gases and other toxins; large animal rescues, such as hoisting a horse from a pool several years ago, or removing wandering cattle from a busy road; bringing down injured or sick technicians who repair lighting on tall towers or tend to high electric wires; or coaxing persons seeking self harm from life-threatening circumstances. “They are very infrequent,” Shepherd said, “but they are there and we have to be ready for them.” Many of the public servants go from training to training, as domestic soldier turns to military
reserve. Many firefighter paramedics join the BCFR family after military service, while others become
reserves after starting their BCFR careers. “There is something unique to both jobs,” Station
80’s Ryan Fischer said at the end of his 24-hour shift. In his dorm cubicle, he changed into his reserve uniform for a full day of training at Patrick Air
Force Base. “When you don’t have to perform the tasks that you constantly train for, it’s a good day.” VV

Hispid Cotton Rat (Sigmodon hispidus)
A Bluewater Creative Group Publication
CONVENIENT Location Easy DRIVE-UP Storage
The hispid cotton rat is a familiar mammal in Florida. Its common name is derived from the hispid or coarse appearance of its fur (a mixture of gray, brown, and black), and from the fact that it frequently lives and nests in a cotton field. Its total average length is 10 inches, and the buck is larger than the doe. Actually, it resembles a hedgehog without the prickly coat. This rat is active at all hours and year-round — and it can swim. A preferred habitat is a private, easily traveled, dense area: tall grass, the edge of a cultivated field, a cactus patch or a palm savanna. Under such a protective shelter, distinct runways spread in all directions from the nest. Predators include the Florida panther, barred owl, corn snake and great blue heron. Also, invasive
fire ants may overrun the nest. Predominantly herbivorous, it favors wild plants and agricultural crops; sometimes insects, mice and carrion are consumed. It occasionally raids the eggs and the young of ground-nesting birds, especially quails. Food is not hoarded. Breeding is possible throughout the year. It persists in warmer climate. The availability of food increases reproduction. The female constructs a cup-shaped nest of woven grasses and plant fibers. Ideal locations for nesting are under a rock or log, in an active gopher tortoise’s burrow, and in a skunk’s abandoned den. Gestation extends 27 days. A litter usually includes two to 15 pups, lightly furred and well formed. A female may breed 24 hours after birthing; a male with a large home range may breed with more than one female
(polygyny); a young one can breed at two to three months. Consequently, the population expands, and family members share a dwelling. While prolific, this creature’s average lifespan is only six months. Though the cotton rat harbors some illnesses, it does not spread pestilence. Fortunately, it has a high immune system, and it is utilized in research for human-specific diseases. VV
