It is something we look forward to when in Florida, and has become increasingly more popular over the years.” The Space Coast Science Café meets from 6 to 8 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month except July and August. Chris Conneen, founder and director of operations at Pizza Gallery, said, “We have really enjoyed the Science Café night at PGG. It has truly been an honor to have professors, doctors, scientists, meteorologists and more speak with, not to, a casual group over dinner.” Genetically-Based Neurodegenerative Disease, presented by FIT’s Dr. Richard Sinden, will kick off the Fall 2011 season of the Space Coast Science Café on Wednesday, September 14. Suntree YMCA Family Center offers fitness for seniors By Wendy Scheuring
In Suntree, there’s a place where seniors can go to get fit, have fun, and socialize — the Suntree YMCA Family Center at 6300 N. Wickham Road. About 25 percent of the members are seniors, according to Joe Rowlette, operations director. “Our oldest member is 97, and he comes in three days a week, during primetime, like clockwork,” Rowlette said. The 20,000 sq. ft. facility is equipped with a lap pool, a group exercise pool, a sauna and a whirlpool, as well as 40 pieces of cardiovascular equipment and 40 pieces of resistance equipment. There are locker rooms, showers, handicap-accessible showers, and chairlift access for the
old and an 80-year old in the same class,” remarked Rowlette. As an afterthought, Rowlette mentioned with a smile, “One of our amenities which I haven’t mentioned yet is the coffee. There is a group of seniors, who call themselves the three stooges, who drink coffee in the lobby every morning for an hour. That is when all the seniors love to gather and talk.” For more information, call 321-259-2929. VV

at the Y may not be sure how to use the machines. “We usually give our new members three orientation appointments, but for seniors, we may give them four or five until they feel confident using the machines on their own. We like to give them special attention.” The cardiovascular machines are also geared toward seniors. “There are side handrails, and emergency stop buttons on the cardiovascular equipment, and our weight machines can go as low as 10 pounds,” Rowlette said. Dan Schatte is a personal trainer who specializes in working with seniors at the
center. “He’s real gentle, real easy,” Rowlette said. “I’ve seen him get people off of a walker or a cane, get them onto a treadmill and then onto exercise machines.” The Y offers group exercise, too. Rowlette said that one of the seniors’ favorite classes is water fitness. For comfort, the group exercise pool temperature ranges from 84 to 88 degrees, but patrons can use the lap pool for exercising if cooler or deeper water is desired. Other group classes offered are basic fitness, yoga-rehab and Zumba, all crossing age barriers. “You might find a 6-year-

In August, the Suntree United Methodist Church transformed from a place of worship to a venue of celebration on Friday, Aug. 5, when more than 50 volunteers and members of the Brevard County community joined to commemorate 50 years of the Good News Jail Ministry (GNJM). The Suntree location was one of the 111 ministries spanning from Florida to Hawaii marking the occasion by following a live simulcast of speakers and testimonials out of Richmond, Va. where the main observance took place. Adamson hopes this milestone will raise public awareness locally and nationally to get other jails and prisons involved, as the program can’t work without the local sheriff department’s invitation. The Brevard ministry was invited into the county 27 years ago and has reached thousands of inmates but not without hard work. “In order to accomplish our purpose for being there,” Adamson said. “We do more
than 65 Bible studies a week because we have 14 housing areas and can’t transfer inmates due to security.” Although there are 130 volunteers within the Brevard ministry, each has a personal story on why they donate their time to help those behind bars who are seeking Christ. “Some of them have no one coming to see them,” said Debbie Westbrook of Cocoa, whose brother was a former inmate. “Just having us come in there and to encourage and share Jesus with them is VIERA VOICE Angela Smith great.” Volunteers and members of the Brevard County community gather at Suntree United Westbrook isn’t alone. NHL player Tim Sestito, participant Jack Garber, volunteer Paul Rigolini and Rockledge Police Chief Ronald Krueger celebrate Tim’s Kids overcoming obstacles to learn hockey at Space Coast Iceplex in Rockledge, on Aug. 5, 2011. By Linda Wiggins
Susan Szymula of Viera blinked away a tear as Jack Garber skated up the ice with the help of his hockey buddy, volunteer Paul Rigolini. Jack’s smile gleamed from ear to ear. “It is a miracle for a child whose family may not be able to afford the expensive gear, a child who may be autistic or be challenged mentally or physically, to get the chance to learn to play hockey and try it out,” said Szymula. When her hockey-dadhusband, Tim, learned he was terminally ill, the couple planned to use part of his life insurance to launch Tim’s Kids, a special program to pay for elaborate equipment required to put children on ice, whether it be in skates or on a skate sled. The program first served low-income students, then expanded to sled hockey for students
with physical challenges. The first class of six students with cognitive disabilities, such as autism, graduated Aug. 5 at Space Coast Iceplex in Rockledge. “Tim loved hockey. He was an absolute fanatic in every sense of the word,” Szymula said. “Funny thing was, he never played hockey. Never even learned to skate. But he wanted to make sure that if any kid wanted to learn, there should be no obstacle to achieving that dream.” National Hockey League star Tim Sestito of the New Jersey Devils was on hand to give medals to the young achievers. The Rockledge resident has a soft spot for children and the community, but on the ice he is a tiger who is spotlighted by fans on YouTube as much for fights as goals. “These kids are amazing. They have put in so much ef-
fort, and their absolute joy is contagious,” Sestito said. That unbridled joy is one of the things that touches Jeri Russell’s heart about her son, Noah, who has sensory issues. “He is an absolute gift, the way he sees things in the moment,” Russell said. “It’s true these kids have different challenges than most, but all children have gifts as well as challenges. Seeing them give it their all while learning new skills, with amazing volunteers/coaches, and having an awesome time on the ice, is truly inspirational. Who knows, maybe I will have an NHL player on my hands in a few years.” The next Tim’s Kids session starts Sept. 2. For more information on future sessions or to donate to the fund, contact Keely Garber at 321-5047500, EXT 205, or keely@ spacecoasticeplex.com. VV

The 9-10 baseball team was made up of Tyler Pruett; Chris Murphy; Ryan Adams; Zach Taylor; Tyler Madl; Jackson Taylor; Eric Adler; Trey Schaneville; Zach Kornick; Connor Leary; Joe Malatino, manager Brandon Taylor and coaches Bobby Pruett and Joe Madl. Other teams winning district championships for the VSLL were the 10-11 boys, Majors girls and Juniors boys. “I’m real proud,” Power said. “We didn’t win this many district titles last year.” Viera’s players certainly have every right to be proud of their accomplishments, and there could be more to come. As Viera’s softball program continues to grow, Power believes the league will be able to field a Junior team for next season. The VSLL is already gearing up for its Fall Ball season. Anyone interested in registering can visit vierasuntreelittleague.com for more information. VV
The Viera/Suntree Little League had another banner year in All-Star competition, winning five of seven district titles and two sectional championships. The league was particularly successful in the 9-10 division where the baseball and softball teams both advanced to the state championship tournament. The 9-10 girls finished third in the state and received an invitation to compete in the Southeast Region Tournament of Champions event in Luray, Va. (The first two teams turned down the invitation.) Viera/Suntree won its first game 15-0 against a team from Virginia, but then lost its next two games. Still, the experience was invaluable. “The girls say next year they look forward to returning to that tournament, but as the state champions,” VSLL president Eric Power said. The 9-10 softball team consisted of Hannah Alba; Makayla Brewer; Corrin Flajole; Daphne Furman; Zoie Hatley; Madison Headley; 6300 N. Hawks see big future with Mays at the helm BY CARL KOTALA
Kevin Mays may have gotten off to a late start as the new head football coach at Viera High School, but he’s not going to let a little thing like that slow him down. “It was hectic at irst, but we’ve adjusted and the kids have jumped on board,” the 38-year-old said. “I’m excited. They’re excited. It’s meant a lot of work, but we’re getting things going.” Mays, who was an assistant coach on two Palm Bay High state championship teams, spent the past two years as the offensive coordinator at Bayside High. He was hired on Aug. 2 to take over the Viera program following an investigation into the improper disbursement of athletic supplemental pay that resulted in the resignation of Coach Paul Frazier. Viera went 3-7 last year in Frazier’s irst season as head coach — the most wins in school history. Now with Mays at the helm, the Hawks are thinking even bigger. “I think he’s going to bring an exciting brand of football, a well-prepared football team, once we get moving,” Viera Athletic Director Chris Gallagher said. “You’ll see a quality football program begin to develop. Coach Mays is well respected throughout this county as a good football

Kevin Mays takes over as the new head football coach at Viera High. Mays, the offensive coordinator at Bayside High the past two seasons, has a pair of state championship rings from his days as an assistant coach at Palm Bay coach. “With time, he’s going to be able to build something special and be able to compete with everybody here in the county. He’s got a good football mind.” Mays’ coaching career began at Hoover Junior High in 1997, where he took a team, which had not won a game in a few years, on to win ive times in two seasons. From there, he went to Eau Gallie High as an offensive line coach and then began an eight-year stint at Palm Bay, where he coached linebackers and then became offensive coordinator. When his childhood friend, Derek
Smith, got the head coaching job at Bayside, he took the offensive coordinator job there and helped the Bears become an offensive powerhouse. Turning Viera into a winner will be a challenge, but it’s one Mays looks forward to. “We go out every day and we work hard,” he said. “The kids have got to know what they’re doing irst, then we perfect what we’re doing. They said we’ve been a little bit more physical than they’ve been in the past. That’s the only way I know how to do it. You’ve got to practice however you’re going to play.” VV

Viera football team sets big goal for 2011 season
VIEra VoICE Carl Kotala
Jacob Nield (No. 52) and a host of Viera defenders arrive on the scene to take down a Space Coast runnning back during this year’s spring game. The Hawks will have a new head coach and a new defensive coordinator this season. By Carl Kotala
Kevin Mays senses the entire Viera community is excited about the upcoming high school football season – and with good reason. The Hawks aren’t just looking to improve on last year’s school-best 3-8 record. They’re talking about reaching the postseason and laying the foundation for a perennially successful program. “Our goal this year is to get into the playoffs and every year from there to go farther and farther into the playoffs,” the Hawks’ new coach said. “That’s what all of us said when we first met, that was our No. 1 goal – we want to make the playoffs.”
Having more than 20 seniors on the team will benefit Mays, who was named head coach Aug. 2 and has been busy trying to install his spread offense system. The Hawks retained four coaches from the previous coaching staff, but have a new defensive coordinator in Kevin Verpaele. Viera’s bigger, better offensive line, led by senior guard Chris Roberts, will be blocking for running backs Jon Kenney and Joseph Sanchez. Tight end Kevin Mall will also see time at linebacker and receiver Kyle Smith has been switched to linebacker as well. Other key players include linebacker/safety Nick Fleig, outside linebacker Rodrick Banks, wide receiver
Brandon Davey and defensive back John Knowles. There were four candidates for the starting quarterback role in the spring. That decision is expected to come down to either senior Kenton Herring, or senior Andrew Head. Viera will compete in Class 7A, District 12 with Port St. Lucie, Martin County and Fort Pierce Central. Because he was hired so late, Mays anticipates the Hawks might struggle early in the season as they try to adjust to the new staff and terminology. However, he said, “the more game, live reps they get, the better they’ll get.” VV

New district awaits Viera High volleyball
Hurst has not forgotten her Holy trinity roots By Carl Kotala
VIEra VoICE Carl Kotala
Viera High School Junior Shelby Jelinek (left) and senior Kiera Keesecker are co captains on a Viera High team coming off its best season ever. Aug. 17, 2011. By Carl Kotala
The roster may be different, and the district may be completely foreign, but there is one thing the Viera High volleyball team can still count on coming off the most successful season in school history. “We were pretty solid defensively last year and I think that will be the case again this year,” head coach Sarah Sykes said. The Hawks graduated six starters off last year’s team that went 16-9 and reached the Class 5A regional playoffs for the first time. Junior libero Shelby Jelinek is back to lead Viera’s defense and was voted a co-captain along with senior Kiera Keesecker, who will likely move to outside hitter after spending last season hitting from the right side. In addition to players moving up from the junior varsity level, the Hawks’ roster features a pair of freshmen —ol Murray and setter Elaina Valencia — as well as two transfer students. Junior outside hitter Christine
Moore is from Oklahoma and junior right side hitter Kaley Mills comes to Viera from Covenant Christian. Sophomore outside hitter Alex Bynum is looking to build off a solid freshman season. Viera has three setters listed on its roster — Valencia, junior Caroline Alvarez and senior Gabby Tomasura. The Hawks will be a junior-driven team this season with eight 11th-graders on a 14-player roster. Keeseecker, Tomasura and Maddie Reschke are the only seniors. While the team will still play old district rivals Melbourne and Palm Bay in Cape Coast Conference this season, Viera will compete in Class 7A, District 3 with New Smyrna Beach and University (Orange City). The Hawks will get their first taste of district action on Sept. 20 when they host New Smyrna Beach. “Even though we have new players, I think we’ll be competitive, just like we were last year,” Sykes said. Taking advantage of a one-week break in the LPGA schedule, Vicky Hurst returned home to Brevard County last month. In addition to getting some rest and enjoying home-cooked meals, the 21-year-old took part in the second annual Vicky Hurst Holy Trinity Golf Tournament at Suntree Country Club on Aug. 13. Greeting each foursome as it approached the 18th tee, Hurst hit a tee shot for all 36 groups, posed for photographs and signed autographs. “It was a great day … I met a lot of good people who support Holy Trinity, which is so important to me” Hurst said. “I’m honored to be a part of it.” Hurst has traveled so much, she needed new pages for her passport, because every page had a stamp on it. She made the cut in nine of her first 13 tournaments this season with her best finish coming in Honda LPGA Taiwan, where she finished tied for 18th. She recently

Catherine Ford praised Hurst for helping raise money for the school’s athletic programs. “I said to Vicky, and I sincerely mean it, if you’re going to have a professional athlete as an alum, you want it to be Vicky Hurst,” Ford said. “She’s all about the right things. She’s honorable. She’s a great role model for young women. As a matter of fact, she’s a great role model for anyone.” VV

The Viera Lions collected school supplies and filled 75 backpacks for Clearlake Middle School just before the 2011-2012 school year began. They delivered them on Monday, Aug. 1. Providing backpacks is just one of the many ways the Viera Lions serve the community. Last year they provided eye exams and glasses for 25 local residents and hearing aids for four other individuals. The Viera Lions also collect used eyeglasses and hearing aids, provide free diabetes screenings, sponsor a Peace Poster contest at two local
schools, participate in the Viera-Suntree Relay for Life, ring the bell for the Salvation Army, and provide toys and food for the Central Brevard Sharing Center. Their Motto is “We serve.” They will host a luncheon fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Carrabba’s in Suntree. For a $10 donation, attendees will receive chicken marsala, pasta, caesar salad and a non-alcoholic beverage between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. For more information or for tickets, call 321-7570238 or visit e-clubhouse. org/sites/Viera. Introducing St. Mary’s Catholic School’s new principal
Belle’s Backpack Buddies
By MARy BROTHERTON
Sandy Basinger, the assistant principal at St. Mary’s Catholic School for the past five years, has been named the school’s principal. Nancie Rowan, who served at Catholic schools in the county for the past 30 years, retired this summer. Basinger joined St. Mary’s in 1997 and taught seventh and eighth-grade English. “It’s been a busy summer, but we’ve been working very hard and we’re ready,” Basinger said. “We’re very excited to begin our Cambridge program at the primary and middle school levels and to welcome a new pre K-3 class to St. Mary’s.” Late last year, St. Mary’s earned Cambridge University’s prestigious seal of approval to operate a Cambridge International Primary Centre as well as offer the challenging middle school program. St. Mary’s is the only school to offer the primary program in Brevard County.

Sandy Basinger is ready for her new role in familiar surroundings.
Some middle schools offer the intermediate program and only Rockledge High School offers the highly competitive high school component. “We have a good program here, and each year we make it better,” Basinger said. “We have a wonderful family environment and we’re very happy to see our family growing.” For more information visit stmarys-school.org or call 321-636-4208. Church At Viera staff, L-R: Carrie Jackson and Stacy Vollenweider, assist with loading the first trailer filled with backpacks for Belle’s Backpack Buddies after a successful drive generated 140 backpacks filled with school supplies within one week. By MARy BROTHERTON
Isabel Mossing discovered other Brevard children could not afford school supplies and decided she wanted to do something to help them. When it was time for her 8th birthday party, she asked guests to bring backpacks, instead of gifts for her. Not only did she receive backpacks, but most of them were filled with school supplies.
Her selfless act became a family tradition that has become a program called Belle’s Backpack Buddies. Now 11 years old, Belle, with her family’s help, has distributed more than 500 backpacks to students who otherwise might not have the necessary supplies to make their school careers successful. This year, the Church At Viera decided to part-

Barbara Knick took over leadership the Brevard 912 group in 2010 to unify Americans behind their country as they were the day after 9/11/2011. By linda wiggins
There is much ado about 9/11, but what about the day after, Sept. 12, 2001? It was a day when the entire country came together, strangers were kind to one another, former foes stood elbow to elbow, and patriotism was the word of the day. “Our goal is to bring the community back to that state,” said Linda Norman of Rockledge, one of the organizers of the local group. “That same feeling — that commitment to country — is what we are hoping to foster with this idea. We want to get everyone thinking like it is 9/12/2001 again.” “The group is nonpolitical, but members believe in limited government and fiscal responsibility,” said Barbara Knick, group leader for Brevard. The loosely organized group is part of the movement started
by radio personality Glenn Beck shortly after 9/11. Knick took over the group leadership a year ago. There are meet-ups and regular meetings featuring speakers on political topics. There are no dues but donations are collected to fund group activities. While sentiments posted on the website are most decidedly politically conservative, a disclaimer states that it is not affiliated with the ultra-conservative Tea Party. Knick said the group welcomes members of any political party. “The day after America was attacked, we were not obsessed with Red states, Blue states or political parties,” Knick said. “We were united as Americans, standing together to protect the greatest nation ever created.” For more information, go to brevard912.net. Two Viera-based businesses are “Best Companies” BY MARY BROTHERTON
St. Petersburg-based Florida Trend partners with the Best Companies Group to survey irms with more than 15 employees, that choose to participate, resulting in the annual list of Florida’s Best Companies to work for. Two Brevard companies made the 2011 list, based on a questionnaire about company policies, practices and demographics. Employees responded anonymously to 72 statements on a ive-point agreement scale and included two open-ended questions. Seven demographic questions focused on eight themes: Leadership and planning; corporate culture and communications; role satisfaction; work environment; relationship with supervisor; training and development; pay and beneits; and overall engagement. Woman and veteran owned Craig Technologies placed 22 out of 38 mid-sized businesses and Hoyman Dobson ranked 27 out of 31 small companies. Each top-rated company’s executive was posed the same question: What Makes Your Company a Florida Trend Best Company to Work For? Each had a different answer, ranging from “Good communication with all the employees,” and “creating an environment where people can be successful,” to “When employees feel safe and secure about their future, they’re free to achieve and be their best.” For more information, visit loridatrend.com. Director of Robotic Surgery Nathan Allison explains the benefits of Health First’s Viera Hospital’s DaVinci surgical robot Allison said that benefits to the patient include reduced recovery times, less bleeding and shorter length of stay in the hospital and less complications. “When we built the hospital, the promise to the community was that Viera Hospital was going to be a high-tech local destination for whatever their medical needs are and this is obviously a step in that direction,’’ said Elliot Cohen from Health First Media Relations. Classroom connections LEAD the way in business
Viera Voice Linda Wiggins
LEAD Brevard CEO Kristin Bakke said students enrolling in the 2012 leadership class can gain an edge in the job market. BY LINDA WIGGINS
Connections made with fellow Leadership Brevard graduates may be more important than ever in getting a new job or winning a business contract in a soft economy, according to LEAD Brevard CEO Kristin Bakke. The nonproit community agency teaches leadership skills and is enrolling new students for the session starting September 15. Its mission is to: Lead, Engage, Achieve and Develop leaders to achieve a preferred future. Past class rosters include county commis-

sioners, regional legislators, bank presidents, major business owners, civic leaders and heads of large nonproits. “We like to think that all of our important leaders, those who are the glue of our community, are graduates of the program,” Bakke said. “It really is a door opener to say that you are a graduate. She inds graduates form valuable connections that way. “You can say there is a bit of pride involved,” said David Stewart, former owner of L&D Consulting and now full-time author. Stewart went through the training and then paid to send each of his employees. The irm made trips to Tallahassee and Washington, D.C. for business development. According to Stewart, grant writing and business development depends on favorable relationships. “Being a LEAD Brevard graduate deinitely opened the doors and keeps them open,” he said. Support from an employer is a plus, and not just for the $2,500 price tag. Throughout the course year, participants must take numerous full days off work to take part in classes and tour major points of business, government, community and civic interest. One such daylong experience is not unlike a fraternal hazing, and builds bonds unlike any other group experience, said one participant. Teams are split into four different groups, assigned a color and given assignments, theoretical challenges to master, such as starting a business with no money and no credit. By lunch time, unbeknownst to participants, some groups will get no food, some get Spam and crackers while one of the groups dines on ilet mignon and ine wine by candlelight, served by the past year’s class members dressed in black and white. “By the afternoon, the have-nots are about ready to riot just to get some food,” said 2002 graduate Brenda Boykins. “It really lets you experience how people less fortunate have to live, and as a leader, you begin to make decisions with the entire community in mind.” For more information or to register, call 321-632-8222 or visit LEADBrevard.org. arlene Coulter leaves legacy of caring and sharing By Linda Wiggins
Arlene Caron Coulter, wife of entertainer Lee Caron, was known as the first lady of Cocoa Beach nightlife in the early days of the space program. After a spiritual experience, she became the “Mother Teresa” of Suntree/Viera, as founder of Resurrection Ranch. At the nonprofit, faith-based residence, many lives were transformed for more than 20 years before it closed several years ago. “Pastor Arlene was a gift to our community, to anyone who was in a crisis in their life. She poured her all, everything she had, into Resurrection Ranch,” said Kristina Petrik, former Ranch staff member, volunteer and community leader who helped organize an August 20

celebration of Coulter’s life. Coulter made her final transition August 7. Petrik is immediate past president of the Suntree/Viera Area Association of Churches, which pools money from its 13 member churches to help needy families with food and emergency basic needs. Coulter, a member of S/VAAC, opened the Ranch to the community’s needy to pick up S/VAAC food for their families and perhaps get a utility or rent bill paid before shutoff or eviction. The Ranch helped men and
women – some with children in tow – overcome their addictions to drugs and alcohol and become contributing members of the community. While Coulter’s mission was not popular with all sectors of its surrounding upscale neighborhoods, the social service community has lamented the loss of this resource, the only one that could house intact families in crisis. In 1988, an Orlando Sentinel article reported that “socialite Caron-Coulter sold her furs and diamonds to purchase the shuttered Old Dixie Highway

motel to open the Ranch.” She once hosted people in crisis in her home, and later signed that over to the nonprofit. With the closure of the Ranch, S/VAAC redirected these resources to its main point of distribution, Advent Lutheran Church at 7550 N. Wickham in Suntree. Volunteers from area churches give out the aid at 6 p.m. on Thursdays. It is a challenge to keep food on the shelves, Petrik reported at an August 10 S/VAAC meeting. She appealed to members to collect more food and money for gas cards so heads of households can continue to feed their families and keep their jobs. S/VAAC member Frank Bradley of Hope Episcopal Church was a Ranch board member for more than 20 years. “Pastor Arlene not only cared about people in need, she had a genuine gift for getting them to become active in their own recovery, to care about themselves enough to do what it took to turn their lives around,” Bradley said. Parting Shot by Charlie Corbeil King Rail
(Rallus elegans) The king rail is the largest North American rail. John James Audubon, the American ornithologist, naturalist and painter, described this waterbird in 1834. It is common in coastal areas. Regrettably, interior populations are waning due to habitat loss. Cautious and secretive, the rail seeks the dense vegetation of freshwater and brackish marshes. Its laterally compressed body (origin of the expression “thin as a rail”) enables it to escape easily in the reeds, rushes, and grasses of aquatic environments. Foraging generally occurs in shallow water, preferably in concealed areas or in fairly open places, which are adjacent to cover. Conveniently, the rail blends with its surroundings. Aquatic insects, small fish, and crustaceans - particularly crayfish - are favored in its diet. When feeding on insects and seeds in terrestrial settings, it dips most of these dry supplements in water before ingestion. VV

Association reserve accounts By FRAnK KneiSeR
In a previous column, I talked about the different types of associations that are regulated by the State of Florida. They include homeowner, condominium, mobile home, cooperative, and timeshare EARLY BIRD SPECIAL 4:30-6 P.M. Buy One Dinner Entree; Get 50% OFF 2nd Dinner Entree
associations. Each has different laws or regulations as to how they are established and maintained. If you are not sure about your association’s capital reserve account, I suggest that you contact your association attorney. It is vital to an association’s financial wellbeing to develop an adequate long-term capital reserve program. A capital reserve schedule is established to maintain and/or replace the association’s major common area assets. For example, in Suntree, the association I manage, we have set up reserve accounts to replace any item that would cost more than $1,000. Examples of major capital assets may be roads, buildings, playgrounds, tennis courts, elevators and others, depending on your

association. A capital reserve account is completely separate from an association’s operating account. In order to set up the reserve schedule, an association should perform a reserve study. This may be done internally; however, the most reliable method would be to hire a professional experienced in conducting a reserve study. These are usually architects and professional engineers. They will do a physical on-site inspection of your association to determine the age, condition, replacement cost, and remaining life of major assets. All of the items, with this information, are then entered into a spreadsheet. The total cumulative information will then determine the annual dollar amount necessary to accommodate the reserve schedule. The schedule is typically funded from the assessments contributed to the operating funds. Occasionally an emergency may arise requiring a special assessment or loan as your association documents may or may not allow. Once the reserve study and schedule are set up, it is important to follow the plan in order to avoid future crisis. It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his Community Association Manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@suntreeflorida.com. VV

Visitors to the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands will no longer need to drive through the South Central Water Treatment Plant to see the site’s breathtaking views and stunning abundance of wildlife. Approximately 60,000 visitors per year pass through the main entrance to the wetland system. They drive through the treatment plant that is a natural product of how wastewater is treated. The yet un-named, paved road is expected to be complete in early September 2011.
