Viera’s cover kids — where are they now? BY MARY BROTHERTON
From its inception, the Viera Voice has invited the community’s children to contribute to art and coloring contests, to tell us what they want to be when they grow up, to participate in drawings to win backstage passes to events throughout the county as well as showcase their academic and athletic accomplishments and since 2008, the Viera Voice has told the story of this community not only from the perspective of businesses and adults, but through the eyes of pre-schoolers, students, teens and young adults. Have you wondered what has happened to some of the faces you’ve seen on the covers? We have a little insight into some of our “cover kids.”

She serves as the assistant director of finance for the inter-residence hall council, a student organization advocating for 6,400 oncampus residents. She said the winter guard championship performance reminds her anything is possible with enough time and effort.

The Viera High junior said he hopes to finish his Little League career with a State Championship win as it has been his dream for years. He plans to attend a California college on a baseball scholarship.

A decade of Hawks excellence: VHS turns 10 BY LINDA WIGGINS
When Amanda Miller learned she would have to spend her sophomore year at “this new school called Viera High” in the 2006-2007 school year, she was angry, to put it politely. The Viera/ Suntree resident had already spent a year at Rockledge High, and like fellow VHS students previously zoned at other high schools in the area, they were planning to finish secondary education at the great school in which they had invested their identity. Ten years later, Miller’s feelings have done a 180. “You couldn’t tell me at the time what a great school VHS would become, how much I would love it, how happy I would be to forever say I was in the first class to attend, and the first graduating class in 2009,” she said. “I feel very blessed.” VHS started off with ninth and 10th grades in August 2006, 10 years ago this month. As those classes moved up a grade, a new one was added. When Miller’s class moved up to 12th grade, all four grade levels were established at the school as the build-out continued. The school is now home to about 2,000 students each year. Students in sports and academics took their lumps as the new school searched for its footing. Now, the school gets an A rating each year by the
state and has amassed record numbers of state and national awards in athletics and book smarts. The success of the school stands to reason, according to Miller’s father, Don Miller, who with wife Dina also have a son, Kyle, who graduated from VHS in 2012. “It’s the students and their families who determine how great a school will be. Of course people were upset because they had built their community schools to greatness, but that same winning combination follows them to the new school,” Don Miller said. Added Dina Miller, “Families in the Viera/Suntree area value education, they invest time and effort in their own children’s education, and they help other students with volunteer hours and resources.” The same thing happened at the elementary school level, except Amanda Miller stayed put. Her Suntree Elementary School once housed 1,500 students until, first, Williams Elementary in Viera East came on line, and then families jammed Brevard County School Board meetings not wanting their children to attend schools “M” or “Q.” Now, Williams, Manatee and Quest elementary schools enjoy the same high rating and community camaraderie as Suntree.
We have the Latest and Safest Technology in Microneedling
A ray of sunshine about the move to VHS? While Amanda Miller had to say goodbye to some of her Rockledge High pals, she reconnected with others. Students who went out of the Viera/Suntree area for junior and senior high reconvened at VHS. “I rediscovered my best friends from elementary school,” she explained, which included friends from orchestra and other clubs. She played viola from fourth grade through graduation. Together, the pioneers blazed trails that today’s VHS Hawks take for granted. Miller excelled in athletics, becoming Cheerleader of the Year as a senior. She made her way onto the homecoming court and they had to create homemade sashes, which now have been replaced with actual sashes. The first year, the cheerleader outfits were homemade. “Cheerleaders from other schools made fun of us that first year with their cute outfits,” Miller said. “Now we have the best of the best.” She credits the study skills she honed at VHS ― she was a charter member of the National Honor Society there and helped launch many other clubs ― for her success in higher education, majoring in Health Sciences and minoring in Health Education at the University of North Florida.
Likewise, the VHS focus on turning an education into a career application continues to serve her. Working at the corporate office at Health First Health Plans’ Suntree

now … whether people want to admit it or not … he’s auditioning,” Tigers coach Nate Hooks Jr. said. “These camps are nothing short of auditioning for a $200,000 education. And all the elite guys in the country are trying to do the same thing. “Recruiting has changed so much, you can’t just perform on film and sit back and say, ‘Somebody’s going to find me.’” Tennessee, Kentucky, South Florida, Georgia State, FAU, Toledo and Middle Tennessee State have all made an offer to the 6-foot, 190-pound Corbin, who gained a little less than 2,000 yards last season. The Jashaun Corbin College Football Camp Tour has taken the Holy Trinity junior running back all over the country this summer. And everywhere he’s been, he’s opened a lot of eyes. “It’s been crazy ... a lot of traveling,” Corbin said. “But I’m enjoying the process, so I don’t mind.” As a result of going to camps at Florida State, Tennessee, Georgia State and Florida Atlantic — with trips to Georgia and LSU also planned — Corbin has already received seven scholarship offers. “I told him he’s actually

By attending these camps, Corbin is getting a chance to work against other elitelevel players, which can give college coaches the opportunity to see if what they see on film matches what they see with their own eyes. Corbin, who was timed at 4.42 seconds in the 40-yard dash at Florida State, has not disappointed. “Everybody has been impressed with the speed, the burst, the explosiveness and the receiving skills,” Hooks said. “As a running back, receiving skills are an asset. You don’t have to replace them. They can get in the slot and it’s a mismatch against a linebacker. “Every one of them have said the productivity on game film and the workouts have matched.” For those who think playing at a small school such as Holy Trinity can be a hindrance in recruiting, all Hooks and the

one of our members who played for one of the most famous college football coaches in the history of the game. Dick May is from the New York area and considered several scholarship offers to play football in his home state of New York. However, he wanted to move away from the area and chose Alabama to play football. May found out that Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant was leaving Texas A&M for Alabama, which was the coach’s alma mater. May was a linebacker on the 1958 and 1959 varsity squads. When he tore his ACL, his football career ended. Bryant went on to coach 25 years at Alabama and during his tenure won six national titles. On July 14, we had 24 players comprising six teams and used the Stableford scoring method to determine the results of competitive play. All-girls Youth Development Program comes to SCU
VIERA VOICE Courtesy Space Coast United Soccer Club
BY CARL KOTALA
The Space Coast United Soccer Club just sent its 10th female player to the national level, and now it’s introducing something new: A girls-only Youth Development Program. The program, for girls in the U7/U8 and U9/U10 age group, will be unveiled this fall. “It’s something we thought about the last 18 months, so we decided to do it,” Space Coast United youth director Rob Dinnie said. “We’re getting quite a bit of interest already. We can definitely see it growing.” Registration is still open with practices beginning the week of Aug. 22 at Viera Regional Park. The idea is to eventually spread the program to other sites such as Wickham Park and the
Algonquin Sports Complex at Indian Harbour Beach in the coming years. For those who are

unfamiliar with the highly successful Space Coast United program, Dinnie wants you to know it’s not just your generic recreation soccer club that does not have a long-term plan to cultivate its players. “We want parents to understand that development is a priority for us,” Dinnie said. “We want to teach kids the game. We want to prepare them for the next age bracket. “We have a curriculum from 3 years old all the way through 18, and it’s connected. Your generic rec

program, the kids come in and they play soccer. We’re actually investing in the younger age brackets and we’re paying top trainers to work the teams. They’re all working from the same curriculum. “Every team is learning the same skills on a weekly basis. They’re working on the same lessons from week to week. The idea is if we’re following that lesson correctly, there will be progression. There will be development and we’re hopefully preparing kids for the next level.” Tiana Caffey, who joined Space Coast United three years ago, was recently
selected to the United States U17 National Team World Cup Camp in preparation for the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup that will be played Sept. 30 to Oct. 21 in Jordan. Despite all the success the club has had, Dinnie made it known all the players are treated with the same amount of respect no matter what their level. “All levels are welcome,” Dinnie said. “I often get that question when parents call. We’re a club from 3 years old all the way up to 18. Our motto at the club is ‘One Club.’ It’s something I firmly believe in.” VV

VSLL All-Stars enjoy success with 5 district titles BY CARL KOTALA
This year’s Viera-Suntree League All-Star season can be considered nothing but a success. Not only did the VSLL claim six district titles, but three teams reached the state tournament with two of them reaching the championship game. Led at the plate and on the mound by Skylar Waggoner and players like Baylea Holland, Grace Soehnlein, Emily Hall, Leah Weis, Rachel Jordan, Tori Berry, Daphne Aravena, Haley Rider, Bianca Torres, Hayley Power, Kiera Ruske and Riley Makousky, the 8-9-10 team had to battle its way out of a tough district and a challenging sectional round before eventually reaching the state title game. The Brevard All-Stars, a senior team made up of players from the VSLL and Eau Gallie LL, won their district and sectional titles in dominating fashion on their way to a state finals appearance.

Big League team, which included Alex Brait, Brody Legate, Devan Elkins, Nick Poehailos, Adam Babineau, Nick Bandos, Ali Cortina, Mike Yannick, Kenny Payne, Tyler Sexton, Jakob Hadad and Alexei Shytle. Also giving it quite a run were the VSLL Gold 9-10 baseball team of Luke Campbell, Dylan Jordan, Lucas Glendinning, Apollos Horrell, Jaden Mack, Anthony Soehnlein, Cameron Simpkins, PJ Befumo, James King, Kooper Houvouras, Michael Schmidt, Carter Virsik and Angel Andujar. They won the district title and nearly advanced out of the sectionals. The same can be said of the VSLL’s 11-12 team of Cole Teply, Cole Hewatt, Kai Aravena, Nathan Rao, Robbie Behrens, Jack Malatino, Stephen Wojcik, Zion Hernandez, Zach Jordan, Alex Toro, Tommy Collins, Josh Williams, Justin Grove and Charlie Gutierrez. That group also won a district title and came up just short of reaching the state tournament. The other VSLL district championship team made VSLL history as Connor Brozny, Dylan Brozny, Evan Stacharczy, Jake Faulkner, Daniel Glywasky, Alex Horrell, Ethan Huffman, Gavin Letawa, Bobby Rappucci, Ben Schleeper, Nick Sicoli Corey Winthrop and Garrett Allen became the league’s first 50/70 baseball team to bring home a title. So while the All-Star season may be over for the VSLL, it was certainly a year of success and lasting memories . V V

POCKET VR Virtual Reality (VR) technologies are hitting the store shelves and websites in many different forms, many of which are quite expensive. The Smart Sock uses pulse oximetry similar to the clip they put on your finger at the hospital. SCHOOL
Viera High student takes important first step in medical field BY GEORGE WHITE
Incoming Viera High School sophomore Lorissa Johnson may have a long way to go for her dream job as a pediatric oncologist, but she has taken an important first step. Johnson served as a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders held June 25 to 27 in Lowell, Mass. The program is aimed at top high school students who want to become physicians or medical researchers. All participants must have a 3.5 or higher grade point average. The purpose of the event is to “honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country … to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them
reach their goal.” Johnson was nominated to represent Florida by Dr. Robert Darling, medical director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. She was chosen based on academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine, according to a press release. During the event, Johnson: • heard presentations on leading medical research by Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science winners. • received advice from Ivy League top medical school deans about what medical school will be like. • heard first-hand accounts

We also got to do things like watch a live surgery on the screen. It was really cool,’’ she said. There were 5,000 delegates and each could bring a parent, she said. “I thought it was like the best days of my life and it really ensures my wanting to be in the medical field. It really motivated me to push harder to do that. I want to be either a pediatric oncologist or a nurse,’’ she said. Added Richard Rossi, executive director, National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists: “This is a crucial time in America when we need more doctors and medical scientists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing

New VCS TV studio is a green screen for imagination BY LINDA WIGGINS
Life just got better for students who loved the Radio & TV Studio/Video Production Lab at Viera Charter School. Born in a second-floor science classroom last year, it has been moved and expanded to a first-floor lab that will be its own classroom, complete with a green screen backdrop, recording studio and video equipment, full lighting kit and five additional cameras and screens around the lab so all students can work on projects at the same time. Last year, students took to the mic in the busy front office for morning announcements, and now they can video them in real time in the lab. Final touches are in progress to go from audioonly to video broadcast of the announcements in each classroom on equipment already in place, and eventually Internet access by families at home. The new faculty coordinator for the studio is already a student and faculty favorite, Kristen Cook. Known as “Cookie,” students coin new terms of endearment according to whatever is viral on social media or inspired by her crazy get-ups on dressdown days when students
and faculty get a break from uniform dress. Fun aside — and fun is not to be discounted as it is a huge enhancement to learning — the studio has practical applications. It is part of the new Digital Arts and Engineering Academy, where students in upper grades seven and eight use all forms of electronic media as they prepare to transition to high school, college and high-tech careers. Students of all ages will use the studio, as much of life is shaped by digital pictures, posts and video for sharing on social media. Practically speaking, these activities are as much for commerce as for pleasure, as consumers spend more time on social media and the marketplace seeks more ways to connect with them. Employers increasingly seek out candidates who have mastery over social media. And perhaps the most practical component of the studio is learning how to stay safe in a virtual reality, Cook said. “Everything is on social media these days, and this is a great opportunity for students to learn safety on the Internet, what’s appropriate to post and to view,” Cook said. “The kids are very excited about

Pokémon trainers of all ages, precautions are in order. Rules have been established and while common sense might dictate most of these rules, players have been hurt as a result of not following them. Peter Pappas, owner of Viera Comics said the
phenomenon helps his business. He has written Niantic Labs, the company that built the game to have his storefront made into a hot spot. “I’d like to put out lure modules and have an event to draw people in.” Pappas plays the game

himself. He said, “It brings people together and this is just the beginning.” He said he knows 100 people who play. “They talk on my Facebook page at Viera Comics. I think they’ll be talking a long time after the event we had at Space Coast Stadium with the Manatees at the end of July. What a fun event that was!” Pokémon’s slogan, “catch them all” compels trainers to go outdoors with the free app that has attracted millions of players. On the constructive side, gamers are exercising more. Players can’t simply ride around in cars to capture the little monsters in their augmented reality, but some entrepreneurial-minded individuals will charge upwards of $25 to chauffeur players from site to site. Other business owners, such as Viera’s Pappas, take advantage of the craze by offering game-inspired food and drink or other specials. Many Pokéstops are in or near museums and theme parks, which offer discounted admission for players. One clever presidential campaigner turned Pokéstops into voter registration centers. Single people have met other players while capturing Pokémons and one professor of digital social media called Pokémon Go the “perfect dating game.” Unfortunately, couples have broken up due to one person’s obsession with the game, or when caught cheating as a result of someone met in the game. One tragic consequence of the game has been when players have disrespected treasured monuments or hallowed memorials by cavorting inappropriately in the vicinities of the 9/11 Memorial and the Holocaust Memorial, as well as other sacred places. People have been hurt while playing. As dangerous as texting and driving is, hunting Pokémons while walking can be equally dangerous. Across the country, people have been hit by cars, robbed, stabbed, fallen off cliffs or into ponds, caught up in drug deals, fallen off skateboards and gotten caught in revolving doors. A concrete designer in Vero Beach sprayed two adult men with his pressure washer because he thought he was about to be attacked. He said once he realized what was going on he, “saw a bunch of other people running around the park and across the street chasing these characters.” If you want to know more

Pokémon rules
Respect the community. Treat everyone with kindness and courtesy. Be respectful when you meet other players or those who are not playing. Never defame, abuse, harass, harm, stalk, threaten or otherwise violate anyone’s legal rights. If you find other players who are aggressive, abusive, overly protective of a Pokéstop or Gym, don’t engage them, but do report them to authorities. Respect privacy of other players. Never post another player’s personal information online. Only photograph other players with their permission. Follow the rules of the real (human) world. Stay aware of your surroundings. Never put yourself in a dangerous situation. Notice where you are and who is with you at all times. Children should travel with an adult. Adults should not play alone. Avoid inappropriate content. You may lose your game privileges if you engage in posting content that could be considered offensive, hateful or obscene. Don’t cheat. Play fair. It’s that simple. Don’t trespass. Regardless of the Pokémon you may risk losing, it is illegal to enter private property, so know your boundaries. Play smart and safe. Don’t let your actions cause you to be mistaken for a mugger. Everybody isn’t playing the game when you are and some won’t understand your excitement at capturing a virtual monster.

Among the leaders for the new Viera Charter School Digital Arts and Engineering Academy are math teacher Scott Beaudry, left, U.S. history teacher Mary Rabun, principal Dr. Julie Cady, program coordinator Carlyn Clark, robotics coach and TV Studio coordinator Kristin Cook and language arts teacher Diane Carr. BY LINDA WIGGINS
A new program at Viera Charter School will virtually be an entirely new school experience, emphasis on the word virtual. But unlike a mere sliver of a program, the Digital Arts and Engineering Academy will incorporate all core subjects through the perspective of a personal computer. Program designers envision the multidisciplinary, projectbased system as a feeder effort into the huge digital arts program at Viera High School and ultimately into careers with business partners like NASA, the Florida Institute of Technology, Northrop Grumman, Florida Power & Light and beyond. “Our students, in collaboration with our business partners and industry personnel, will engage in socially relevant design challenges in an effort to increase student awareness, foster exploration, and prepare students for a successful transition into high school, college, and eventually for the vast career options available to them in the STEAM industries,” program coordinator and VCS teacher Carlyn Clark said, referring to the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics that is the specialization for the charter school, which serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. And should the students design and prototype a product or service that could make them an entrepreneur or a contractor to government or private industry, so much the better. “We are not only preparing

students for today’s changing world, but training them to anticipate changes coming in the future that are unforeseeable to the untrained eye,” VCS principal Dr. Julie Cady said. She pointed to VCS School Board president Robert Jordan, who transitioned from an employee spanning the NASA space shuttle program to a contractor himself, as a good role model for the advanced seventh and eighth grade students in the program. VCS math teacher Scott Beaudry is thrilled to be part of the program for that reason. He’ll teach geometry to help students as they envision, measure and create new objects, and statistics to gauge outcomes of projects and ultimately gauge where markets are headed. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had students ask how what they are learning in advanced math is going to be relevant to them after they are out of school. It’s a thrill to be able to show them, ‘This! This is why you need to know this!’ ” The program’s focus on digital engineering, rocketry, robotics and computer programming is a given, but core subjects like U.S. history and language arts, and giving back to the community through service learning, are just as important components, leaders said. “Students will be able to create amazing out-of-thebox history projects with these computer design skills,” U.S. history teacher Mary Rabun said. Chimed in language arts teacher Diane Carr with a smile, “And you’re not going to have much of a report on anything without a proficient use of the English language.” VV

Summer Travel HONORING THE NATIONAL PARKS ON THEIR 100TH BIRTHDAY
A look at Mesa Verde National Park STORY BY ANDREA GROSS PHOTOS BY IRV GREEN
I take a deep breath, reach for the side rails, and scramble up a 10-rung ladder. There before me is a small city, tucked into a shelf on a canyon wall, protected by a huge overhang. Some of the buildings are circular, like tall towers. Others are rectangular, with sharp, crisp angles; all are made of sandstone bricks and have small, open windows. I’m in the Cliff Palace at Mesa Verde National Park, one of only 59 places that the U.S. Congress has declared worthy of this designation. Here in the southwest corner of Colorado, using nothing but rocks and sticks as tools, an ancient people created not only a city, but an entire society. They farmed, prayed, made pottery and wove sandals for approximately 700 years, from roughly 600 to 1300 A.D. There are more than 600 archeological sites at Mesa Verde, ranging in size from small one-room huts to large multi-storied compounds. They are so unusual, so well preserved and awe-inspiring, that in 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt signed a special Mesa Verde National Park Bill, granting protected status to the 52,000-acre site. Ten years later, the National Park Service was created to oversee the 84 million acres set aside “to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of [this country] for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations,” and Mesa
Cliff Palace is the largest dwelling in Mesa Verde. It contained 150 rooms and housed approximately 100 people.
Verde was officially put under the jurisdiction of the new agency. This year as the NPS turns 100 in a much ballyhooed celebration, Mesa Verde is the only national park devoted exclusively to archeological remains and one of only 14 national parks also designated as a World Heritage Centre. Several of the remains are visible from roadside overlooks; a few can be explored independently; others can only be visited during ranger-led tours. My husband and I begin with a tour through Cliff Palace, Mesa Verde’s largest cliff dwelling. We climb uneven steps and ladders, peer into alcoves, look down into kivas (circular structures used for religious, ceremonial or political purposes), and marvel at the architectural skill as well as the communal structure that existed so many years ago. The actual walk through Cliff Palace is short, only about a quarter-mile roundtrip, and the steps,
Visitors to Cliff Palace must climb five 8- to 10-foot tall ladders. The Ancestral Puebloans were skilled architects and craftsmen.
though uneven, aren’t that steep. But the park is approximately 7,000 feet above sea level, meaning that the air is thin and short walks seem long. For those who are reasonably fit — and who’ve taken a few days to acclimate themselves to the high elevation — the tour is worth every huff and puff. After Cliff Palace, we’re ready to tackle a more difficult site. A sign at the Visitor Center encourages folks “to begin the day as the Ancestral Pueblo people have for generations.” I like the idea of getting into the skin of ancient people, and am all ready to sign up for a tour of the Balcony House, when I read that I’ll not only have to climb a 32-foot ladder, but I’ll also have to crawl through an 18-inch wide tunnel. It occurs to me that far from getting into the skin of the ancients, my hips won’t even get into
the tunnel. I convince my husband to go to Wetherill Mesa instead so we can see Step House on a self-guided exploration that’s open to people of all ages — and presumably all hip widths — as long as they can carry a half gallon of water. This is definitely more my style. No one knows exactly why the ancient folks left the dwellings they’d so carefully constructed, but for the Pueblo people of the Southwest, who they were is no mystery at all. They claim the cliff dwellers as their ancestors. Anasazi, the word previously used when referring to the inhabitants of Mesa Verde, is a Navajo word, given to them by those who discovered the deserted dwellings in the 1880s. It means “ancient ones,” but it implies, say today’s
Puebloans, that the ancient ones were ancestors of the Navajo people rather than of the Puebloans. What’s more, the Navajo word for “ancient” can also be translated as “enemy,” and today’s Pueblo people are understandably reluctant to have their ancestors described not only by a Navajo word but by one that can be interpreted as meaning an enemy. “That’s why we now call the cliff dwellers ‘Ancestral Puebloans,’” says a park ranger. “It’s a more accurate description of who they were.” Point well taken, although personally, I could have found an even better description. “Genius” is the one that immediately comes to mind. Boy Scouts Troop 224 is an ‘Eagle making machine’
BY LINDA WIGGINS
New Eagle Scouts from Boy Scouts Troop 224, based at Suntree United Methodist Church, were recognized at the Brevard County Commission meeting July 12. Sixty-three have achieved the Eagle Scout rank since the troop’s inception in 1995, and each new crop, up to eight at a time, are commended by the District 4 commissioner in the summer and in the spring. "I am extremely proud of all of the Eagle Scouts produced here in the Suntree/Viera area. It speaks to the quality of life we have here in Brevard,” Commissioner Curt Smith said. The Troop has a reputation with its Central Florida Challenger District as an Eagle-making machine, charter church representative Jeff Sweet said. "Scouting is a learning-
dong journey for scouts, not just focused on making Eagle," Sweet said. The honor benefits a scout for life, he added. “We have great support, an actual Eagle mentor, Gray Echols, an excellent, committed scoutmaster, Kevin Howald, and a very active troop committee chair, Lia Page, who also is the children’s ministry director at the church, so it works out great,” Sweet said. “The parents are very active leaders and volunteers as well. And the boys themselves all volunteer and help each other as their projects come to fruition.” The troop currently has 40 boys ages 11 to 17. Eagle Scouts recognized include: • Zachary Elmer, who organized a school supplies drive for underprivileged children in his local community of Avalon Park and across Orange County, collecting more than $600 in supplies. The former
Suntree resident, who chose to remain with his troop through Eagle, was commended for his efforts by the Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demmings. He received help from several of his fellow scouts and also members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, who helped distribute the supplies. • Mitchell Shafer, a Viera High School graduate who designed and replacing a triple-side information kiosk at the Ritch Grissom Viera Wetlands. For a full feature article and photos on the project, go to VieraVoice.com. • Kevin Fee, the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy graduate achieving Eagle Scout rank by designing, building and installing two boat lifts for racing sculls to be stored in the Space Coast Crew boat house.

grandmother were laid to rest. • Jonathan Hall, The Kingswood Academy homeschool grad who achieved his Eagle by providing SUMC’s preschool and kindergarten with an outdoor Children’s Science Learning Center, which includes wooden planters, a music corner, an interactive boat experience, a root system and a hop scotch area. Viera's new Adelaide community will feature million-dollar homes BY MIKE GAFFEY
Brevard County has never seen anything like Adelaide, said Tom Davis of Christopher Burton Luxury Homes. The 143-home high-end waterfront community in north Viera will feature custom homes with prices starting at $1 million on more than 400 acres west of Stadium Parkway and across from Summer Lakes. “It’s going to be truly something you’ve not seen in Brevard County before or certainly in Viera before,” said Davis, vice president of residential design and business development for Christopher Burton, one of three firms building homes at the site. Christopher Burton already has four asyet unbuilt homes under contract and is working on other contracts, Davis said. Arthur Rutenberg Homes and Elan Builders also are constructing homes at the guard-gated community. Work on the first two
model homes should start in the next few months and those models should be open next spring, Davis said. Adelaide will be built around a 123-acre recreational lake -- the largest in Viera -- and will feature three distinct subdivisions: The Reserve, a separate gated area with 18 lakefront lots; The Lakes and the Preserve. Each subdivision will offer large homesites ranging in size from a half-acre up to more than an acre, Davis said. “A big draw will be the size of these lots,” Davis said. “We just haven’t seen much of that in Viera.” Non-motorized watersports such as sailing and canoeing will be permitted in the lake. Other amenities include a 5-acre park, a dock and gazebo extending into the lake, a recreation and beach area, two tennis courts, a basketball court, jogging and walking trails, a community pavilion, and a playground area.
“There’s just not been a community like this where you’ve got a park, tennis courts, basketball courts, a pavilion, those kinds of things behind a gate,” Davis said. “So the kids will actually be playing behind the gates and it’s going to feel very secure for a lot of families.” Davis said Christopher Burton has seen an increase in demand for million-dollar homes. And Adelaide’s location near Interstate 95, with its access to Orlando and Orlando International Airport, makes the community “a tremendous draw,” he said. “Right now in the construction phase, you can’t quite appreciate how beautiful it’s going to be,” Davis said. “It’s going to be heavily landscaped, with beautiful pathways and walkways and a walking trail probably well over a mile in length. "It’s really going to be a special place.”

p o o c BUSINESSS California Tortilla lets the tasters do the talking with free food
VIERA VOICE Mike Gaffey
California Tortilla, a fast-casual Mexican restaurant, opened July 12 at Pineda Landings in Suntree. BY MIKE GAFFEY
The new California Tortilla restaurant opened July 12 at Pineda Landings in Suntree. Thousands were fed on opening day and the soft openings for friends and family in the days leading to the grand opening, when the first 10 people in line won free burritos for a year. The Maryland-based fastcasual Mexican eatery is the second in Florida. “The best marketing I can do is put our food in your mouth,” said Dale Warden, who owns the 2,700-squarefoot Suntree location at 6375 N. Wickham Rd. Warden also opened Florida’s first California Tortilla franchise in Kissimmee in February and plans to open franchises in Orlando and Tampa later this year. A similar giveaway at the Kissimmee location’s grand
opening attracted more than 1,000 people, Warden said. “The next closest (California Tortilla) between here and Kissimmee is only 810 miles up Interstate 95,” said Warden, a Lakeland resident. “We’re the second farthest away. The farthest away is a guy named Simon. He owns four stores in Qatar on the Persian Gulf. He has introduced Mexican food to the Arabs.” “The taste is the first thing,” Warden said. “I’m a foodie. I love fusion cooking, but in this we’re taking Mexican and fusing it with all kinds of great flavors. It’s just amazing. Then you go from that to the quality. It’s one thing to have good food. It’s another thing to have good quality that’s instilled in the system.” Customers can choose from a variety of chef-inspired creations such as the Korean BBQ burrito, with grilled Mesquite chicken, pork or steak, rice, fajita veggies, sweet and spicy Korean BBQ sauce, crisp slaw, sriracha chili sauce and cilantro. Diners can personalize their own burritos or bowls with their choice of meat, beef, blackened fish or vegetables, with a dozen add-ons including sour cream, bacon and fresh avocado. For a spicier experience, customers can visit the restaurant’s Wall of Flame and choose from 75 hot sauces. Sides include a side salad,
chips and queso and rice and beans. There’s a kids menu featuring pint-sized Mexican dishes that come with a drink, chips, queso or salsa and a dessert. Warden said Brevard County’s pace of growth, its allure to engineers and retirees, and a favorable lease deal with Orlando-based real estate advisory firm and Pineda Landings developer Bishop Beale made the decision to open in Suntree an easy one. “This is probably the best percentage of growth we’re going to get,” Warden said. “There are really great opportunities here.” Hours for the Suntree location are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Warden said. The restaurant seats 69 people inside and 30 people outside. The location employs three full-time and 30 part-time workers, Warden said. “We have been so overwhelmed by the quality we have found here in Brevard County,” Warden said of his crew. “We did not have to go far to find really dedicated, qualified workers.“ VV For more information, visit Californiatortilla.com or call 321-622-4721.

Citizens' Climate Lobby conference delivers compelling message BEYOND the CURB Marcia Booth
President & Founder, 3Rs and Beyond
We totaled more than a 1,000 in Washington, D.C. attending the Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) conference. To deliver the welcome message, CCL president and climate reality leader Marshall Saunders entered the stage. With an enthusiastic hello, he declared: “I am delighted to see you and I did not see you coming!” For 10 months, Saunders was on his own inviting himself into small groups around the community to give talks about climate change. In 2007, however, at the end of his presentation at a retirement home in Rancho Bernardo, a lady in her 90s
asked him “What should we do?” Saunders proceeded with the answer: “What’s needed is a methodology of results where hundreds of people organize themselves, get educated, lobby their members of Congress and the news media in a relentless and unstoppable way and yet friendly.” “Why don’t you do that?” the lady countered. That was the beginning of CCL. Saunders organized a meeting and a group of 29 people joined him in the effort to build political support across party lines to influence climate policy. Without a business plan and with no idea where they were going, CCL (citizensclimatelobby.org) was born. Saunders closed his welcome message, thanking participants for being there and for being who we are: citizens in a democracy with
Show off those pearly whites.
access to our government work, able to organize and educate ourselves, and be relentless and unstoppable. “You are the world’s best hope,” he concluded. That welcome inspired everyone in the room. What a start! After that, high-caliber speakers such as Dr. Michael Mann, Dr. Jonathan Patz and Jerry Taylor among others, delivered presentations and training sessions to prepare us for lobby day — the day that more than 800 of us actually met with members of the Congress or staff to present CCL’s proposal: a carbon fee and dividend policy. My group brought information about the proposal to U.S. Rep. Bill Posey’s office. The proposal, which recommends putting a price tag on carbon emissions “to account for the costs of burning fossil fuels” and returning all revenue directly to households, is based on
a fundamental principal of sustainable business: internalizing externalities, i.e. accounting for any cost, hazard or risk that has been transferred to others. Such policy would be an incentive for businesses to shift to more sustainable practices because unsustainable polluting production methods would be more costly than sustainable clean production methods. It would also mean that organizations would need to plan beyond price tags of tangible costs — like electricity, raw material, labor — and take responsibility for the environmental impact they have. “Once these externalities are fully reflected in company balance sheets [and budgets], such costs can be internalized and lead to a correction of prices,” explains president of Ethical Markets Media Hazel Henderson.

COPIES
For example, polystyrene (commonly known as Styrofoam) food containers are largely used by restaurants, supermarkets, vendors, offices and even schools because they are normally the cheapest kind of container one can buy. Those organizations, working on a budget, will favor the cheapest option more than sustainable options in order to stretch their dollar, overlooking the fact that polystyrene is a petroleumbased plastic that won’t break down for hundreds of years; leaches pollutants into the water and air; breaks easily into tiny pieces that are ingested with food or mistaken for food; has styrene as its major component, a synthetic chemical added to the list of substances reasonably anticipated to be carcinogens based on human cancer studies, laboratory animal studies and mechanistic scientific information. If all those facts were quantified and a price put on them, the final price of polystyrene containers would more accurately reflect its real cost. So the idea of internalizing externalities is a good one and a carbon fee and dividend policy seems like a viable starting point in that direction that got the attention of more than 20,000 people, who are now CCL members. Then, what should we do? Applying Saunders’ principals sounds tempting. Be relentless and unstoppable, friends of Mother Earth; learn about and support solutions that steer us toward a sustainable world. After all, we are the world’s best hope. Mini-Crow division of Scarecrow Stroll proves popular
Businesses wanted for Scarecrow Stroll in October BY LINDA WIGGINS
The Pokémon Go craze has a familiar ring in the Viera/ Suntree area. Viera Voice readers will experience the fifth Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival this October as they and their families get their game on outdoors, follow along on a map ballot to view artistic hand-made scarecrows and enter their ballots for a chance at great prizes. For $195, businesses can build their own scarecrows to help benefit local charities. Participating businesses will display their scarecrows and generate foot traffic at their locations Oct. 6 through 20. They will then move them them to the Harvest Festival at The Avenue Viera at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 for display and silent auction from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Businesses who want to participate in the Harvest
Festival can call Viera Voice at 321-242-1235. A scarecrow building class will be held in September to guide businesses through the task of recreating a favorite character. Scarecrows may be traditional, scary or funny. Faces may be sad, cheerful, beautiful, angry or ugly. They must be free-standing, supported by a prop or built around a frame. Rubber, plastic or storebought masks are not permitted. Scarecrows must be no taller than 7 feet tall and they must fit in a 5-foot by 5-foot space. They must be portable, weighing no more than 50 pounds. Individuals, families, civic organizations and schools may participate. Prizes will be awarded by a panel of judges for first, second and third place and $500 Best of Show cash prize from Viera Voice, as well

Who do you know that wants to move into the neighborhood?
Back by popular demand is the Mini-Crow division of the Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival Oct. 22. There is no charge to enter and there is a chance for $100 in cash prizes, plus lots of oohs, ahhs and awes from an anticipated full-capacity crowd. Last year more than 2,000 people attended. While traditional ‘crows will be posted across the greater Viera/Suntree area from Oct. 6 through 20 and moved to the Harvest Festival, the Mini-Crows will be on display only at the event held at The Avenue Viera’s Central Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Mini-Crow division was created to give children a chance to partake. “Children love to create things with their own hands,” said Jill Blue-Gaines, CEO of the events and marketing firm
Bluewater Creative Group, which publishes the Viera Voice. “So this will be something that they will love, and something that adults will love to see.” Families must have their Mini-Crow builders and creations at the festival by 10 a.m. Judging will be at 2 p.m. in two age groups of age 6 to 9, and 10 to 15. One winner from each category will win $50. The artistic creations must be between 2 feet and 3 feet tall and light enough for the child to carry. Straw must be incorporated into the design to reflect some degree of traditional scarecrow look, but builders are encouraged to be creative and “think outside the pumpkin patch.” VV Rules and a registration form are online at VieraVoice. com/Scarecrow-Stroll. For more information, call 321-242-1235.

She holds a master's degree in Gerontology specializing in Physical Therapy in the Aging Process. Her passion for guiding families through the disease process will be a great asset to Market Street, officials said. Community relations director Jaimi Capriotti brings more than nine years of assisted living experience to Market Street, most recently at a community in Jacksonville. Capriotti acts as an advisor to caregivers, guiding them through the sensitive process of placing a loved one. Capriotti said it brings her great joy to help those with memory loss create continued independence and purposeful living. VV

Charlotte’s WebSpinning Tales Charlotte A. Corbeil
Frogs are cold-blooded amphibians. Adaptations insure survival in various habitats: on the ground, in fresh water, in trees and in burrows. Flooded areas provide temporary dwellings. Moisture is essential because of smooth, permeable skin susceptible to dehydration. Frogs do not drink but absorb water (and oxygen) through skin. Nostrils also inhale oxygen. Insufficient oxygen underwater causes drowning. Skin is camouflaged in brown, gray and green. For many frogs, changing color regulates body temperature. Some colors declare toxicity: red, blue, yellow and black. Predators, such as birds and reptiles, are further deterred with distasteful or toxic milky secretions, often containing mucus. Besides moistening the skin, slimy secretions hinder capture. Handling frogs is unsafe. Toxins may cause rashes, hallucinations or death. The golden poison dart frog of the Colombian rainforest harbors enough poison to kill 10 men. Did you know? Bulging eyes furnish outstanding vision. Blinking while swallowing sinks eyeballs, causing a swelling on the roof of the mouth which squeezes food down the throat. Seeing and hearing (ears are circles behind eyes) is possible underwater. A cleft tongue, attached in front, readily captures insects. The upper jaw has teeth to secure prey. Long, muscular hind legs and webbed toes facilitate swimming. Springy tendons promote jumping 20 times one’s length. Some with short back legs tend to walk. Rings formed in bones during hibernation determine age — similar to trees. Molting occurs routinely; once shed,t skin is usually consumed. Though frogs and toads entertain similarities, neither spreads warts to humans! Unique adaptations exist.
Burrowing frogs have toe extensions (spades) for digging; tree frogs have large adhesive toe pads for climbing; some rainforest frogs have flaps to glide from tree to tree. During the mating season, a male’s vocal sac (or sacs) inflates like a bubble and amplifies sound; mating songs may travel a mile. Mostly males sing — helpful for sexual identification. When imperiled, silence prevails. The majority of species practice “prolonged” breeding, frequently involving annual migrations of thousands. Small Florida wetlands are choice breeding shelters. Eggs are generally laid in the water, hatching into fish-like tadpoles (polliwogs). In Florida, intriguing frogs are the sizable bullfrog sometimes measuring 12 inches outstretched. The hind legs are a delicacy. The second largest is the mostly aquatic pig frog which mimics the guttural grunts of a pig. Regrettably, frogs are encountering fungal disease and abnormalities involving missing or extra legs. Hopefully, they will endure because they are beneficial, particularly in the development of pharmaceuticals. Moreover, on a spring evening with heavy rain anticipated, the mating croaks of an army (group) of frogs are soothing. Lindsey Mattessich placed first for grades 9 to 12 at this year’s The Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards Youth Arts Contest. Lindsey claims, “The collage was inspired by my interest in Floridian birds and all Floridian wildlife…. Conservation is important to me because I feel it is our responsibility to protect the planet we are living on. We need to give just as much as we take.” VV

Three local members of all-Puerto Rican Army regiment will be recognized for service BY MIKE GAFFEY
Three Brevard County men who served in the U.S. Army’s all-Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment will receive replicas of the Congressional Gold Medal on July 28 in Viera. Congressman Bill Posey, R-Rockledge, will award Juan Romero-Silva of Palm Bay, William VilaVelez of Palm Bay, and Chaplain James B. Allan of Indialantic with the nation’s highest civilian honor during a 10 a.m. ceremony at the Brevard County Commission Chambers at 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way. “It’s a great privilege to recognize Juan RomeroSilva, William Vila-Velez, and Chaplain James B.
Allan for their service to our nation,” Posey said in a statement. “We owe a debt of gratitude to all our men and women in uniform and their families for their service and great personal sacrifices they make in defense of our liberty.” Nicknamed “the Borinqueneers” after Puerto Rico’s pre-colonial name of Borinquen, the 65th Infantry Regiment was created in 1898 by Congress after the Spanish-American War as a segregated, allPuerto Rican unit. The regiment fought in World War I, World War II and the Korean War. During combat in Korea, the regiment earned nine Distinguished Service Crosses, about 250 Silver Stars and more than 600
Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts. Romero-Silva, William Vila-Velez and Allan were among several Borinqueneers who were unable to attend a ceremony in April in Emancipation Hall at the U.S. Capitol where the Borinqueneers Gold Medal was unveiled. Posey and Congressman Pedro Pierluisi (D-Puerto Rico) and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn), spearheaded bipartisan legislation to authorize a Congressional Gold Medal for the regiment. The legislation was signed into law in 2014. Replica gold medal awards are provided by the Borinqueneers Congressional Gold

Student’s project uses iPods to enrich lives of people with dementia BY CARL KOTALA
When Karalee Chace walks into the room to see her friends at “The Club,” there are hugs to be given, laughter and conversations to be had and music … always music. The 15-year-old Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School sophomore has been coming to the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation in Melbourne for as long as she can remember. She’s come to sing. She’s come to dance. And now she’s working on a school project to help those at the adult day center diagnosed with dementia by putting together personal playlists of their favorite music on individual iPods. The project is based on the scientific evidence developed from the “Alive Inside” documentary. “It’s really important to me
because I am a musician and I play all kinds of instruments,” Chace said. “So when people kind of write it off ... you have to look at how much impact it has in the medical field. It’s not just something to do for fun. “It’s something that’s really important to people and we should be paying more attention to it, instead of (saying), ‘Oh, it’s just a hobby.’ Well, it shouldn’t just be a hobby. It’s something extremely important to everybody.” Chace was introduced to the project by Janet Steiner, who is not only the Director of Education & Family Services at the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation, but was also Chace’s dance teacher. “We have a great deal of research to back up the value of music therapy to enrich the lives of people that do suffer
with memory impairment,” Steiner said. As a young girl, Chace performed dances at the foundation. She still remembers people from that time, but she has made many other friends along the way. Like the guy who once started a conversation because she was wearing a Pink Floyd shirt. He later won her a bunch of stuffed animals that she still has in her room. Or the woman who tells her how pretty she is that any potential boyfriend must be brought by for her approval. During the past few months, she has been getting to know people even more so she can program the appropriate music for them. “It’s important to know people,” she said. “I feel like they have so many great things to say. People write it off and are like, ‘They can’t

remember anyway’ and I’m like, ‘No, they can. You just don’t want to listen. Trust me, they know a lot. They remember a lot. You’ve just got to pay attention.’” Chace has four iPods and enough money to buy two more. She is hoping to have at least 10 and has a fundraising website at GoFundMe.com/ ipodsfordementia. She is also seeking donations of unused or outdated ipods and earphones which can be made — along with cash donations — at the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation. Though the school project only lasts a year, Chace has plans to keep it going as long as possible. Clearly, she is not your average 15 year old. Perhaps she can inspire someone. “It’s really sad, honestly. I wish more people would come out and talk to people,”
she said. “Not even just here, like everywhere. Like veterans. They’re not going to be here forever, so if you’re not going to listen to them now, you’re going to regret that. Some people should just listen to the things they say. “I did another project with veterans a few years back … I wrote down everything they said. I have a whole binder of all their stories.” Coming to the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation every Wednesday, Chase said, is her favorite part of the week. As for what kind of career she would like to pursue in college, she’s not sure. But there will always be music. “I just want to be able to help people that can’t always help themselves,” she said. “If in any way music could relate to that, then I’d be all for it.” VV

Matriarch celebrates 100 years of sunshine BY LINDA WIGGINS
Viera Voice Linda Wiggins
Richard DiPeppe, left, Patricia DiPeppe, LeeAnn Court, Rosalie Kascmer-Ryan and Larry Court were among the relatives to surround matriarch Helen Lodics on her 100th birthday.
Who knew “You Are My Sunshine” has multiple verses? Helen Lodics, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren do, and they know the harmonies as well. They sang them nonstop for the matriarch’s 100th birthday July 18 at her home at Palm Cottages in Rockledge. What is her secret to a long life? “Use it or lose it,” she said between stanzas, alternately claiming to be “39 and holding” or “sweet 16.”

Daughter Rosalie Kascmer-Ryan of Viera put her finger on the key of life, and it has become a family tradition. “She has a positive attitude and a fun-loving nature,” Kascmer-Ryan said. “It’s not a cliché when I tell you she is an inspiration to everyone she meets.” Lodics was born in Palmerton, Pa. and raised her three children in nearby Bethlehem where she worked for AT&T for 35 years. She and husband Joseph moved to Vero Beach when they retired, remaining there for 30

Planning for your pets after you are gone
Pet of the Month
BY WILLIAM A. JOHNSON, P.A.
We Americans love our pets! More than 70 million households in the United States have at least one pet. Pet ownership comprises dogs, cats, horses, birds, reptiles, fish, etc. What happens to your beloved animals when you pass away? Hopefully, you have planned to have them placed in another loving home. Regretfully, however, many times they end up in shelters or are euthanized. Under Florida Statute 736.0408, you can create a trust which can be used to take care of your pets in the event of your death. You can name a trustee to manage the care of your pet as well as allocate the resources for the benefit of your pet. If your trustee isn’t taking care of your pets, then they can be removed and another trustee appointed. This arrangement is better than just leaving your pet or pets to an individual and hoping they take care of them. Furthermore, this arrangement makes the trustee accountable for how the money is spent on your beloved animal. If you just leave someone a lump sum of money, who guarantees they spend it on your pet? We all love our pets. You should make a loving plan for the future when you are not around. Nationally, our shelters and adoption centers are overwhelmed. Let’s do better! VV
