Beck family loves diversity of Viera BY WENDY SCHEURING Sean and Sara Beck got tricked into moving to Viera, Sean Beck said jokingly. He and his wife Sara had been thinking of moving from their native Boca Raton, just when they were starting their young family. Sean’s sister Jamie, and brother-in-law Jake, who live in Viera, wanted the couple to live nearby. “They tricked us into looking at model homes in Kerrington and we pulled the trigger and signed a contract.” The couple officially moved to Viera on July 4, 2019. “We wanted to do what was best for our family. It’s great when you are single, the night life and the restaurants, but it was not where we wanted to raise our children,” he said. Since then, the couple’s young family has grown to include daughter Skylar, 4, son Sloan, 2, and daughter Sage, 6 months. “It’s nice,” Sara Beck said of Viera. “Viera is definitely more family-oriented. People are a lot kinder and it’s a little quieter at times, too.” “Here, it seems like a more connected community. And there are kids everywhere,” he added. Sean Beck formed a company with his brotherin-law Jake Schmalenberger, which hosts large-scale community food festivals and competitions. “There was not a lot of

nightlife and events here, so we were discussing what we would want to do and it was not a hard decision. We like food, music and drinking beer, so we created a company called Battle Bros, LLC.” “Our events are about supporting locals and working with as many small businesses as we can,” Sean Beck said. “At these events there are 40-plus food trucks. It gives the attendee the opportunity to try all different kinds of food for one to five dollars per item. These are all day events with live music and a marketplace with crafters and artists.” When she is able, Sara Beck helps out at the events as well. “For the most part, I was working ticketing and then I had a baby. I will be doing the photography going forward,” she said. It is a family-run company with Sean working as front man, Jake working logistics, and Jamie as creative director. But it is not just their new company which makes the Becks enjoy Viera life. “What I like is that there are a lot of places where you can walk,” Sara Beck said. “I like being close to things, so that we can bike around and have things in close proximity so we don’t have to drive.” “The overall sense of community is great,” Sean Beck said. “So many people come from all walks of life. It’s like a hotspot for diversity.” VV

Twenty years later, 9/11 still haunts Enzo Ardovini. There’s the memory loss, images of body parts mixed with wreckage and the aches and pains of injuries and the aftermath of surgeries. Ardovini did the right thing when he charged in with firefighters to help during the hours right after the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. He knew people who might be trapped and still alive. A day later, maybe two, he fell between the concrete and steel beams in what was left of a parking garage near the North Tower. The memory is a blur, as is a lot of the past. Ardovini was an architect who designed buildings near Wall Street for Oppenheimer. That career came to a halt after the fall. “How long I was there, I can’t tell you,’’ said Ardovini, a 69-year-old Palm Bay resident who sells olive oil and other Italian delicacies with his wife Susan at various farmers markets around Brevard County. “I VIERA VOICE Jill Blue had a broken shoulder and Enzo Ardovini sells olive oil and other Italian products at farmers markets in Brevard County. ribs. Past runs have attracted up to 1,000 participants running and walking in Santa gear along Stadium Parkway. “Last year, we had finishers ages 3 to 92,” race director Brittany Streufert stated. “It's an amazing race that everyone is capable of doing.” Runners and walkers will receive finisher medals and the event will offer awards and prizes. This year’s run features a Reindeer Team Competition. Groups of nine friends and family members can register as a team. The top three teams will receive prizes. A virtual option is available for those unable to participate in person, Streufert stated. “The virtual run is for those that are not ready to come back out or have medical issues that still keep them away from the crowds,” she stated. Donations from previous Run Run Santa events have benefited organizations in the Viera and Indian River County communities. Duran Golf Club team builds home for ospreys Some lucky osprey is getting a new home just in time for the holidays. A team at Duran Golf Club, 7032 Stadium Parkway, erected a 20-foot wooden pole and platform near the 18-hole golf course’s 10th hole and a lake in hopes of attracting one of the fishhunting birds of prey ready to build a nest. “At this time, we do not have an incumbent osprey,” Duran Golf Club Course Superintendent Andrew Norman said. “However, we have spotted one or two checking out the site and structure. Hopefully, there will be a claim staked in the near future.” Duran officials came up with the idea for an osprey nest during a biannual meeting to discuss projects and environmental

impacts of the club, which has been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary through Audubon International since February 2020. Norman, Duran General Manager Jeff Von Eschen, Dr. Jim Papritan, a retired professor from Ohio State University, and Anne Hicks, a Resource Advisory Group member, began the planning process for the pole in late summer, Norman said. With assistance from on-site employee and Florida Certified Master naturalist Brenda Pannell and Timothy McClaskey, Duran’s assistant superintendent who also is licensed in native area management, officials selected a site between the clubhouse and the 10th hole for the osprey pole, Norman said. “The spot borders a wetlands, so there wouldn’t

be much disturbance from people,” he said. “Furthermore, for the sake of the osprey, it is far enough off the golf course that any mis-hit shots wouldn’t find their way anywhere near the site.” Pole construction, in October, took less than two weeks, but transporting the pole to the site was a slow commute that required a truck and tractor, Norman said. Crew members McClaskey, Steven Kurjack, Andre Wicks, Dr. Carlos Woodward, and Equipment Technician Michael Smith spent about four hours getting the pole upright and level. They also poured about 1,200 pounds of concrete to secure the base, Norman said. A 3- by 3-foot box attached atop the pole has wire mesh to provide support for whatever nesting material an occupying osprey chooses to bring in, he said. Nesting usually takes place from late November and early December until February or March in Florida. Visible to drivers and passers-by from Stadium Parkway, the pole is the first installed at Duran and has generated positive feedback from visitors, Norman said. More might be added if the venture proves successful, he added. The pole is one of numerous environmental projects planned at Duran, including bee hotels,

pollinator gardens, debris and brush piles for smaller wildlife, and several on-site Monarch butterfly gardens. “Golf courses have historically gotten a bad stigma as far as being

environmental stewards, when in reality it is quite the opposite,” Norman said. “So, it is always nice to receive recognition for our environmental efforts.” VV

Hawks pushing to get back to final four — and beyond BY CARL KOTALA

Coming off their most successful season in program history, the Viera Hawks have all the ingredients to do it all again — only better. Last year’s team, which reached the Class 6A boys soccer final four, is highly motivated and loaded with talent as it seeks a return to the rarified air of being a legitimate state title contender. “We have a great familylike mindset and very strong-minded players who are super determined to not only get back to where we were last year, but even further,” senior Conner Floyd said. Floyd is just one member of last year’s district and regional championship team that is back for another run. Seniors Evan Kirrane, Yorgen Torres, Austin Kehoe and Hudson Sabiston are all back along with juniors Max Walker; Gabe Shelton and Bora Turkman and

transition to their new team look as seamless as possible. “I don’t think we’re any more or less loaded than we were last year, to be honest,” Viera coach Nick Robinson said. “I’ve always said this every year with my Viera teams — top to bottom, I feel like we’ve always had a team good enough to make runs. “The team that’s so far been able to separate itself and differentiate themselves was not necessarily the most

individually gifted team. It was the team that was the most disciplined, worked for each other and were committed to the cause. “I feel like we’re almost there with this group, but we’ve still got some adversity to face to test some characters to make sure we’re there and we stick together no matter what. We’re going to have some tough moments at some point. Every team’s going to be out to get us. That’s the reality.”

The Hawks couldn’t have asked for a better start to their season, winning on the road at Merritt Island, 2-1 in a battle of two of Brevard County’s best teams. As well as Viera played, there were a few things the Hawks could have done better and that’s what Floyd wants to focus on — taking the positives from last year, improving on the team's flaws and continuing to push hard and push forward. While some players are stepping into bigger roles this season, one of the notables is May, who will have a bigger voice. “Max has stepped into a leadership role this year,” Robinson said. “He’s a captain this year as a sophomore, which shows his desire. He didn’t just want to come in and make a name for himself and just win one district championship and go to the final four. “He wants to win back-to-back district championships. He wants to win another regional championship and he wants to push this program to the brink of history. That’s the type of leadership and character that you want.” VV

Changes are already paying early-season dividends for Hawks BY CARL KOTALA The Viera Hawks have a new lineup and, just as important, a whole new attitude as they head into the season. “The biggest thing we’re focusing on right now is coming together as a team and creating a culture that’s positive and (has a feeling of) togetherness,” Viera girls soccer coach Cal Dixon said. The Hawks graduated 12 players last year from a team that admittedly had a disappointing season. A year after going to the state final four, Viera failed to get out of the district tournament. This year’s team features not only new players, but returners stepping into bigger, or simply different roles. And it’s already paying big dividends. In Viera’s season opener, the Hawks went to Montverde Academy and defeated an Eagles team that had won 56 straight games and had not lost in three years. Now that’s how you turn things around. Junior Taylor George is back up front along with sophomore newcomer Gianna Buysse, junior returner Kaley Vitaliano, who will take on a bigger role, sophomore Brienna McCain and junior Antoinette Burwell. Seniors Victoria Whener and Alex Rowe along with juniors Adrianna Burwell and Amber Teschendorf should also see bigger roles. Sophomores Makenzie Ellison and Sophie Boss, who played JV last season, are expected to have a big impact. In goal, the Hawks have senior Ellie Gathercole, junior Olivia Frederick and freshman Kendall Mix. Senior co-captains Morgan Brubaker and Lauren Mieczkowski are also taking on new

responsibilities. “We did lose 12 seniors, so it’s definitely a whole new look,” Brubaker said. “I played a lot of forward last year, but now I moved to the midfield. I’m just distributing the balls up front, making runs in behind and making sure I stay connected with Lauren in the back to keep the midfield compact. It’s going smoothly (so far).” Mieczkowski, who previously played center back, has also moved to the midfield. “It’s a lot more running and it’s just a lot more awareness,” Mieczkowski said. “I feel like it’s just another step up to be a bigger leader on the field because you have to keep everything controlled.” Brubaker and Mieczkowski also are doing their best to create that positive atmosphere Dixon referred to with more team bonding exercises that the Hawks weren’t able to do last year because of COVID. “I feel like last year, the dynamic between the team was a lot different than this year,” Mieczkowski said. “We’re hoping to have a better dynamic, be more as a team and not as individuals. Last year, we had some issues. We just weren’t as a team. This year, we’re hoping as a team we can move forward really gracefully, really strong — build each other up on the field constantly.” While the Hawks embraced the idea that some teams might overlook them given the number of seniors they lost from last year’s team, that’s not going to happen now after they beat Montverde. The new-look Hawks will definitely be a team to watch this season. V V

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Newcomer Gianna Buysse, left, is expected to provide a boost for the Viera High offense. Despite losing 12 seniors from last year's soccer team, the Hawks should have plenty of firepower and be in contention for another deep playoff run.

SCHOOL Viera TV debuts student-produced game show BY CARL KOTALA It’s a game show with a high school twist, like a smelly shoe, or maybe even a whipped cream pie … if you dare. The Viera High School TV production class debuted a new game show last month called “On the Fly” that is designed to be as much fun for the audience as it is for the contestants. Junior Lindsey Ott developed the student-run production at the request of teacher Michael Szabo. “The general concept is a mash of all the game shows that I’ve seen,” said Ott, who also serves as the show’s host. “We have (pop-culture oriented) trivia which is based off ‘Jeopardy,’ but the trivia has different levels of hardness. There’s a scale. They get asked these questions and they can answer … each question is 100 points, but if they absolutely don’t know what it is, they can complete a dare for half the points. “The dare for the show we just shot was you have to smell this guy’s shoe. I’m thinking about bringing in whipped cream to make pies

answer, and then you get it wrong,” Lili Rose Zayak said. “Or, you’re just throwing out a random answer. … And it was the answer. “It’s fun.” Viera students will also have a chance to get involved and maybe even win a prize. “At the end of the show, I have a question that speaks directly to the camera,” Ott said. “Today’s was ‘What country consumes the

most chocolate.’ Whoever calls into Mr. Szabo (and is) the first person to say Switzerland gets a gift card.” Szabo, who started a student-run Internet radio station — WVHS — is hoping the idea of getting real-world experiences like this will create more interest in the class and club. “We’re trying to build a program and get people (involved),” he said. “It’s

growing. I’m excited about it. It’s good for the kids. They’re really learning a lot. “… These students really put out some excellent work. I’m very proud of them.” Ott, who came to Viera from Richmond Hill, Georgia, was a producer for the news program at her former school. When Szabo told her he wanted to start a game show, she started doing research. “I had never done a game show before. I had focused primarily on news,” Ott said. “So, I just started watching old reruns and I was like, ‘I like this, but I hate that.’ So, I just pulled everything that I liked out of it, all the different shows I watched. It took a couple of weeks to plan and fine tune everything.” The show is already generating some buzz around campus. Ott said one of her teachers has been asking her every day when the show airs. “My friends are all interested in it,” Sophia Jolie Zayak said. “… They all want to see it and laugh at it. It’s just something to add to the day during class.”V V

running her own market research and business strategy company. Her trip back home for the reunion will garner her serious frequent flyer miles, but not rack up as many as Amy Aoussat, who plans to travel to the reunion from her current home base in England. “Social media has helped us all stay connected and I’m still in daily contact with a few of my closest friends back in Florida, but I still wouldn’t want to miss such an occasion!” said Aoussat, who has been back home only twice in the 10 years since she moved across The Pond. Aoussat doesn’t want to miss the centerpiece of reunion festivities, the “Dinner with a View” party at downtown Melbourne’s Hotel Melby, where attendees can opt for a discounted overnight stay so as not to feel the pressure of driving home late. Beyond this adultsonly party, the reunion week also has family-

friendly events that include a beach hangout, surf lessons, kayaking trips and more. Proceeds from the event will benefit Epilepsy Foundation Florida and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. “Our class agreed that donating to these charities helps show the families and friends of our departed classmates that we care and want to honor their grief by supporting these causes,” Kreuzkamp added. Reunion tickets start at $65 but will increase Jan. 1, 2022. Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate. Sponsorships that include professional marketing opportunities start at $500. Private donations also are welcome. “The faculty remember the class of 2012 fondly,” Draves said. “They set the standard for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and Hawk pride.” For more information, visit Viera2012.com V V

Members of the Viera High School Class of 2012 plan to party hearty come June when graduates celebrate that important milestone: a 10-year anniversary. Although 2012’s is the fourth graduating class in the high school’s history, it is the first class to complete all four years at the then brand-new Viera High. “By the time the class of 2012 rolled onto campus, it was the first year Viera High School had freshmen through seniors on campus at the same time and we finally felt like a full-fledged high school,” teacher Jeff Draves said. A week-long series of events will highlight the highs and lows of the past decade, with no short supply for either category. “We’ve been through loss of classmates, COVID quarantines, unemployment and existential crises,” said Carolyn Kreuzkamp, who is

Becky and Mike Crews are Santa and Mrs. Claus in the eyes of Marlee and Connor Stephens.

Santa Claus is still coming to malls, cautious amid pandemic BY LINDA JUMP Even the Grinch pandemic won’t stop a vaccinated Santa from holding children on his lap in Brevard County malls. But parents and grandparents can choose more social-distance options, make a reservation and observe other precautions. “We’re very excited to bring Santa and Mrs. Claus back for another holiday season. Last year, we only had socially-distanced visits. This year, guests can sit on a bench in front of Santa or on his lap,” said Michele Reyes, the marketing director at The Avenue Viera. The reduced visiting hours, plexiglass screens and face coverings of 2020 are part of the ghost of Christmas past. “We’re fortunate to be an outdoor center where both space and ventilation is ample,” Reyes said. Mike and Becky Crews have portrayed Santa and Mrs. Claus for 15 years, since Becky was on the Brevard Zoo board and they needed replacements.

“Last year, we used shields and masks and distance to separate us from families. We used a lot of alcohol to sanitize our hands after each visit,” Becky said. They’ll take precautions again — yes, they’re fully vaccinated. “It’s important to carry on family traditions. We have families who have 10 to 15 years of photos of their kids and families with us,” Becky said. Alisha Kish, the marketing director for the Melbourne Square Mall, said those who pre-register at melbournesquare.com for a time slot will visit Santa faster than walk-ins. Customers have a choice of sitting on a bench, on Santa’s lap or visiting a sensitive Santa before hours in a private setting, a choice for children with sensory disorders. Kish said Santa photos help business. “People come here sometimes just for the holiday photos, but many include dinner and shopping.” The mall’s website also lists other holiday

traditions, such as Meet the Grinch with the Melbourne Police Department and Paws and Claws Night. “These are annual events we are glad to welcome back,” Kish said. Both Melbourne Square and Merritt Square Mall hired Cherry Hill Programs, a New Jerseybased firm, for the Santa photos. Chris Landtroop, the vice president of marketing, wrote in a prepared statement that “All CDC (Centers for Disease Control) safety guidelines for COVID-19 will be followed … including social distancing, face coverings and enhanced sanitation. Additionally, as part of Cherry Hill Program COVID safety protocols, reservations and advance photo package sales are encouraged. Bass Pro Shop in Palm Bay will offer free 4- by 6-inch contactless photos with Santa. Children will sit on a bench in front of the jolly St. Nick. Reservations are required online within seven days at basspro.com/ santa.V V

Aerospace educator receives Lifetime Achievement Award BY ERNEST ARICO Longtime aerospace educator Jane A. Hodges, who earned two doctorate degrees, will receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Space Club Florida Committee. Hodges, a resident of Indian River Colony Club since August 2020 with her husband Dave Hutton, will be recognized for her 50year aerospace education career at the committee’s Dec. 10 banquet at the Radisson Resort at the Port Convention Center. “I’m very humbled by the award,” Hodges said. “This is a great retirement gift to me.” Born in Amarillo, Texas in 1948, Hodges earned seven degrees (including two doctorates and a law degree from Emory University in Atlanta), wrote materials on air and space science; created and taught courses on aerospace education at three different colleges and universities and in West Africa; directed aerospace education for the Civil Air Patrol; served in NASA’s public affairs department at Kennedy Space Center; traveled to more than 80 countries as a presenter/ speaker at international aerospace and educational conferences, and established Edisto Press, her own international aerospace consultation and publication business. “I was definitely a pioneer in the field of aerospace education,” Hodges explained. “My job was to integrate aerospace technology into the Kthrough-12 curriculum.” Hodges said she was always well-received wherever she went to talk about space, especially when she brought her inflatable space shuttle. “Aerospace is an international language,” she said. “Everyone was interested in space. kids excited about space.” Jim Jennings, the former KSC deputy director from 1998 to 2002, nominated Hodges because of her lifetime dedication toward aerospace education and NASA. “She did a lot of work to get students interested in space,” said Jennings, now the president of Omega Plus, a consulting firm that helps businesses work with NASA. “She did so much work

behind-the-scenes to make us look good at NASA.” Headquartered on the Space Coast, the National Space Club Florida Committee (NSCFL) is a nonprofit corporation composed of individuals representing industry, government, the Department of Defense, regional educational institutions and the public. These individuals share the same mission —

increase public awareness of America’s aerospace programs. Since 1992, the committee has recognized one to three people for life-long achievement and contributions to the U.S. space program while living in Florida. Past honorees represent a wide range of managers, engineers and other specialists who were vital to the success of the efforts in space. Hodges is the first woman ever to receive the award. “It was always a good ole’ boys network at NASA,” Hodges said. “There were many male-dominated jobs. But now you’re seeing a lot more women being recognized for their work in the space industry.” Hugh Harris, the former KSC director of public affairs, and Hodges’ supervisor when she worked

in the education department, recalls that Hodges was tremendously enthusiastic about her role. “She helped teachers from all over the country learn more about the space industry,” Harris said. “She was particularly effective in encouraging women, as well as men, to go into the various fields at NASA.” According to the NSCFL’s website, the nominee must have made significant contributions to the space industry through technical achievement, education or the management of aerospace related activities as a government, military, commercial or government contractor employee. “I’m very pleased that she is getting the award,” Harris said. “Many women deserve to be recognized for their work at NASA and in the space industry.” V V

T

he year was fraught with apprehension, where we even wondered if we would be able to get together with friends and family for the holidays. And as it happens most years, Christmas has come hurtling at Maserati speed, where it feels that we barely finished Thanksgiving leftovers! Some of us are still staying alert and wearing the everfaithful muzzle, even though we are seeing more and more mask-less faces everywhere and finally our hidden smiles are reciprocated. The days of “A Christmas Carol,” with Scrooge bringing Tiny Tim a goose for Christmas are long past. In the Victorian era, mansions shone bright with a million lit tapers, even on the freshly cut tree, with hundreds of colorful wrapped presents beneath. The feast consisted of roasted fowl — goose, turkey and even swan — served in the lavish extravagant surroundings of the well to do. And of course, it was accompanied with sweet pudding and minced meat pies. While the poor had barely enough to scrape by or keep their homes warm, the lucky ones feasted on rabbits because they didn’t have much to put on the table. A good deal has changed to celebrate this traditional holiday. The many households rejoicing still decorate the traditional tree, laden with ornaments and bright, twinkling lights that can be seen from windows and doorways out onto the streets. For Christians, Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus, and it’s venerated all over the world. Some attend midnight mass and for children everywhere that have sat upon Santa’s knee, it’s the day where Old St. Nick (or simply Kris Kringle) slides

merrily down the chimney to deliver countless toys to boys and girls, hoping they made it out of the naughty list. And who knew that in Canada Santa has his very own postal code? Some of us stay up late, TV binging on holiday classics. “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Miracle on 34th Street” and my personal fave, “White Christmas.” There’s just something so special about Bing Crosby’s first words, “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” that crowns what this holiday is really all about.

“‘We Wish you A Merry Christmas and give us some Figgy pudding!’ We sing ode to it, but do we really know what it is?” —Nanette Hebdige

It’s the holiday-palooza of celebrations, involving a frenzy of commercialized purchases for the gift givers, with some purchases that have been acquired on the Black Friday sales in July! For real, Americans spend more than $850 million on gifts every year. And then we gather around the tree on the eve of Christmas or on the 25th, drinking toddies, or sipping steaming hot chocolate in our pj’s, watching children’s faces alight with wonder and eagerness as they furiously rip into their presents. What could be better than that? And naturally, households have the familiar, wafting scents and aromas of cooking. Yet, there’s a lot more to Christmas that many aren’t even aware of — popular old-old traditions

that had deep symbolism and are no longer around. Get Figgy with it “We Wish you A Merry Christmas and give us some Figgy pudding!” We sing ode to it, but do we really know what it is? Figgy (not necessarily getting jiggy with it) was part of the folklore established by the Brits. It consisted of a savory type of desert enjoyed in the 14th and 15th century. Contrary to what folks might think, figgy pudding typically does not include any figs, although some variations may add chopped figs, combined with other dried fruits. The original concept seems rather off putting, not to mention foul to imagine consuming a thin gruel-like porridge, that incorporated chunks of leftover cooked venison or mutton (mostly meat that was about to spoil) with some dried fruits added for flavor and some grains. There was little to eat in those days without any means of refrigeration, so foodstuffs were kept in cold underground cellars or hung outside in the cold. In early Victorian times, it transitioned to the more recognizable version of plum pudding (the modern take) instead of Figgy, because dried raisins were called plums along with all dried fruits. Indeed, a reformed Mr. Scrooge thoroughly enjoyed his plum pudding, alongside Tiny Tim. By saying “bring us some Figgy pudding,” humble carolers crooning in the doorways of the wealthy, wanted something to warm them as a reward for their singing. So, get Figgy with it and pay tribute to that notorious plum pudding of old by adding it to your holiday table. V V

Sherwood Park rounds out SOIRL 'First Fifty' projects We know that restoring the Indian River Lagoon is a long-term effort requiring controls over hundreds of different sources dumping pollution into its waters. Well, the Sherwood Park Stormwater Project is an important milestone along this path. It’s the 50th Save Our Indian River Lagoon (SOIRL) Project completed. The Sherwood project consists of a set of several wet detention/retention ponds, rain gardens and a baffle box that will convert a rough empty lot to a beautiful community park. This $2.6 million project will prevent 3,214 pounds per year of total nitrogen (TN) and 879 pounds per year of total phosphorus from entering the Lagoon. The City of Melbourne identified the need for controls in its 2013 Master Plan, but proposed a single pond. The SOIRL Citizen Oversight Committee urged the city to be bolder and the Sherwood Project was created with $1.8 million from the Melbourne

Lagoon Straight Talk From the Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition

Stormwater Utility, Florida Department of Environmental Protection — $400,000, SOIRL — $392,000, and Space Coast Realtors Association — $25,000. The rest of the “First Fifty” completed so far include a variety of controls across the county. Some of the biggest are: • Turkey Creek muck dredging and water treatment — 5,691 pounds per year in TN reduction • Cliff Creek baffle box — 4,095 pounds per year in TN reduction • Thrush Drive baffle box — 3,661 pounds per year in TN reduction • Cocoa Beach Water Reclamation Facility upgrade — 2,520 pounds per year in TN reduction Others include septic

upgrades and conversions, and shoreline protection, including 27,290 square feet with oyster reefs and 3,753 linear feet of planted vegetation. Together the “First Fifty” will reduce TN entering the lagoon by about 100,000 pounds per year. Beyond these completed projects, the SOIRL Plan identifies more than 270 future and current projects including: new advanced treatment at the Titusville Osprey Wastewater Treatment facility (reduce TN by 8,660 pounds per year, under construction), dredging muck from the Grand Canal (reduce TN by 89,025 pounds per year, under construction) to a major mechanical aquatic vegetation harvesting project (reduce TN by 16,636 pounds per year TN, under review). The full SOIRL plan, which is reviewed and updated annually, is available online at brevardl. gov/SaveOurLagoon/Home VV

Simple steps can help the Earth In spending time close to the ocean, we get reminded of its beauty, its importance and its vulnerability. So much is discarded into our oceans … from oil spills, chemical discharges, to trash dumps, littering and fishing gear left behind; our oceans are in danger. Sea Shepherd Global (seashepherdglobal.org) identified “the biggest single source of plastic choking out the life in our oceans is made up of purposefully or accidentally lost, discarded or abandoned fishing nets, ropes, FADs (fish aggregating devices), long lines and plastic fishing crates and baskets.” Recognizing the problem that discarded gear represents for the environment and inspired by the fishing culture of their homeland, a group of artisan women from a village in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil founded in 2015 the small company Redeiras (redeiras.com.br), to transform trash into art. The group collects discarded fishing gear, fish scales and skin to create beautiful pieces of art — bags, jewelry — putting into practice the meaning of the three arrows that make up the recycling symbol: 1. Collect recyclables. 2. Process them into a new product. 3. Buy products with recycled content. In partnership with various stores, it now distributes its products throughout the country. That shows how anyone can organize and make a difference. In the same spirit, Recycle Brevard was born 10 years ago to serve as the source for materials that will

Accepting donations of unwanted reusable objects and collecting discarded items that would otherwise end up in landfills, the facility in Rockledge holds all kinds of things that will spark creativity in anyone looking to get crafty. By either donating and especially coming to get some of the materials available, you help Recycle Brevard continue its work into the future. Besides being the source of raw materials for crafters, students and artists by the bag or through the Recycling Club memberships, Recycle Brevard organizes demos, Crafting with Friends sessions and workshops for groups and parties. New board game highlights Viera, Space Coast BY ERNEST ARICO If you’re looking for a board game with a local twist to purchase as a Christmas gift, you might want to check out your local Walmart store. A Cincinnati, Ohio company — Late for the Sky Production — has created several hundred local specialty board games using the Monopoly concept. Two of the games — Viera-opoly and Space Coast-opoly — are available at the Walmart Supercenter in Viera. According to the company’s website — lateforthesky.com — its first specialty game was Miami-opoly, based on Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1984. Robyn Wilson, the company’s founder and president, is a 1980 graduate of Miami University and her time spent there served as the inspiration for the first game. The title list soon spread to about 80 major U.S. colleges. Each game is a walk around a specific university and the board spaces are the campus buildings, local businesses and traditions that are special to that school. Marketing Manager Michael Schulte said the company expanded its concept to include cities, communities and events. It has created more than 700 games highlighting major cities, colleges, universities and festivals. Schulte said the company was able to create its own version of the Monopoly concept because the game’s public domain ended in the early 1980s and it has steered away from the Monopoly trademark. “People take pride in where they come from and our games help celebrate that,” he said. “It’s a great concept because it allows people sitting around the table to learn more about the town and community they live in.” Besides Viera and Space Coast games, Schulte said

there are games for Cocoa Beach, Cocoa, Rockledge, Cape Canaveral, Melbourne and Vero Beach. “We have a working agreement with Walmart,” Schulte explained. “We shipped more than 360 of the Viera games at the end of September to the Walmart store on North Wickham Road and 72 of the Space Coast games at the beginning of October.” All of the company’s games are 100 percent manufactured in the U.S. and sell for $19.99 each, Schulte said. To create a local game, Schulte said the company does a lot of research. They check with the local Walmart store manager, the local Chamber of Commerce, social media, festivals and other Internet sites for information. For example, the Viera game includes stops at The Avenue Viera, Brevard Zoo and Space Coast Stadium. Schulte also said sales of the specialty board games have skyrocketed, thanks in part to COVID-19. “During this pandemic, board games are a hot commodity because people are staying indoors,” he said. According to Wikipedia, the history of Monopoly can be traced back to 1903, when American antimonopolist Lizzie Magie created a game which she hoped would explain the singletax theory of Henry George. It was intended as an educational tool to illustrate the negative aspects of concentrating land in private monopolies. She took out a patent in 1904. Her game, The Landlord's Game, was self-published, beginning in 1906. Magie created two sets of rules: an anti-monopolist set in which all were rewarded when wealth was

created, and a monopolist set in which the goal was to create monopolies and crush opponents. Parker Brothers, an American toy and game manufacturer which in 1991

became a brand of Hasbro, bought the game’s copyrights and began marketing the game on Nov. 5, 1935. Cartoonist F. O. Alexander contributed the design. A U. S. patent was issued on Dec.

Ground breaks on 1,300-home, 55-plus community in Viera BY MIKE GAFFEY New communities keep coming to Viera. Developers broke ground Nov. 11 on a 1,300home gated community for residents 55 and older, planned on more than 500 acres west of the Pineda Interchange at Interstate 95. Del Webb at Viera will be national home builder PulteGroup’s first Space Coast community in more than 10 years and marks the company’s first entry into the region’s active adult market. Pre-selling should start in mid-2022 at the development, which will offer single-family and villa homes with open floor plans and modern features. “It’s just a great opportunity for us to get back into the Space Coast and we’re happy to bring the Del Webb brand here. It’s the leading brand in the active adult market,” Clint Ball, the Central Florida division president of PulteGroup, said during the groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the southern end of Stadium Parkway. “We know there are a lot of buyers over here who are

retiring and living the best part of their lives and we can’t wait to serve them with world-class product and innovation and lifestyle,” Ball said. “And we will have an amenity that’s something to see, and we can’t wait to get that built and show it off to everybody.” Del Webb at Viera will be built to appeal to the 40 percent of Brevard County residents 55 or older. With an emphasis on the area’s natural beauty and coastal and Caribbean influences,

the development will feature water views throughout and tropical landscaping. Residents can enjoy a 20,000-square-foot waterfront clubhouse behind the community’s private gates, a 10-acre amenity site with a resort-style pool, cabana oasis, tennis and pickleball courts, a stateof-the-art fitness center, community garden, barefoot bar with food and beverage service, walking and biking trails, an event lawn and dog parks.

This map shows Del Webb's construction site for the 1,300 homes, a 55plus community in Viera.

Viers Company President Todd Pokrywa praised the “smooth relationship” between his team and the PulteGroup team that led to Thursday’s ceremony. “We’re very painstaking in our evaluation of what we do next in Viera, and we wanted to enhance the value of everything we’ve done and what’s coming in the future,” Pokrywa said. “So when we were evaluating how we fill the 55-plus, age-restricted, active adult market segment, it really wasn’t a question. This is the category leader. Del Webb at Viera elevates the offerings to our prospective residents in the master planned community of Viera. There couldn’t be a better partner to fill this market segment.

It’s really taking us to the next level here in Viera.” Construction should begin soon on the southward extension of Stadium Parkway that will provide access to the development, Pokrywa noted. Ball said the Space Coast has changed drastically since PulteGroup last built homes in Brevard. “I was joking earlier that I had to educate people in the company that they launch rockets and land them on barges now,” he said. “We’ve come a long way in terms of the technology and innovation and all of the job growth that creates a wonderful environment for people to live here.” Visit delwebb.com/Viera for more information. But that will all change in mid-2022 when Viera sees its first hardware store. “There is no Ace Hardware in Viera and we need one,” said Hitesh Patel, the owner of the new hardware store. He has been in the hardware business for nearly 10 years. Patel owns four Ace Hardware stores, which are located throughout the state of Florida as well as three True Value stores in Brevard County. Patel first moved to Titusville in 1993 to start a convenience store and gas station. In 2011, he created an independent insurance business, then in 2012 he started his first hardware business with four business partners. Construction of the new Viera Ace Hardware building

The new 12,000-squarefoot store will be located at 5494 Lorkey Drive. “It will be really convenient and accessible at the traffic light, easy to get in and to get out,” Patel said. “It will be near Stadium Parkway behind the Chickfil-A.” The store will feature hardware, of course, as well as propane, a garden center, the Big Green Egg and highend lawnmowers. “This is not your typical

Dr. K moves office to Viera, continues fight against pain BY JENNIFER H. MONAGHAN Dr. Vijay Katukuri has relocated his practice — Brevard Spine & Rehab Institute — to Office Park Place in Viera. Katukuri is a doubleboard certified physician who specializes in interventional pain management. Dr. K, as he is called by his seven-person staff and patients, is assisted by Pushpa Daliya, a nurse practitioner specializing in adult-gerontology primary care. Katukuri comes from a family of doctors; hence, he believes it was inevitable he would ultimately become a doctor himself. However, he began his adult career as a software programmer, but quickly realized that it was not his passion. “It just didn’t feel like it was my area,” he said. Medical school was his calling. “I like the hands-on approach with patients,” he said. “Pain medicine would

Spine & Rehab Institute, she worked as a nurse practitioner specializing in physical medicine and rehab in Melbourne. Before that, she worked as a nurse practitioner in a hospital in Fort Myers. Daliya also believes that providing effective pain management can make a big difference in a patient’s life. “Mostly every day, we are able to help them; and listening to them is most important,” she said. “We are able to manage their pain and improve their quality of life and functionality. Daliya said she likes her workplace and the working atmosphere. “Everybody works as a team, they are supportive, and Dr. K is an awesome doctor and also a good human being.” Brevard Spine & Rehab Institute is located at 7332 Office Park Place, #103, Viera. Heritage Isle parade, ceremony honors veterans BY ERNEST ARICO

Colorful golf carts decorated with flags, banners and signs highlighted the Veterans Day event at the Heritage Isle Clubhouse in East Viera on Thursday, Nov. 11. About 10 golf carts paraded around the clubhouse prior to the start of the ceremony honoring U.S. veterans from all military branches. Lynn and Paul Greenis, who moved to Heritage Isle a year ago, had one of the parade’s most colorful golf carts — one that looked like a 1958 red Chevy Impala. “So many people made sacrifices,” said Lynn Greenis, who met her husband at a dance at Patrick Air Force base 55 years ago. “It’s important to honor these veterans and make sure we give them the respect they deserve.” Sally Gorham, who organized the golf cart

Cris Lusher said she loves to decorate her golf cart for many occasions, especially on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. “It’s important to remember all who served for this country and died for us,” she said. One of the ceremony’s attendees was Chief Master Sgt. Chris McBride, the

Gerry McAnulty, a Heritage Isle resident who served as master of ceremonies, told the crowd: “We are here today to honor our heroes and to thank them for their sacrifices.” Heritage Isle resident Charlotte Seltzer gave the invocation and Anita Rigsbee sang the National Anthem. V V

A new roadway project on Stadium Parkway, near Duran Golf Club, will improve the flow of traffic.

New roads bolster Viera’s economy SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE New businesses continue to open in Viera and it’s difficult for new roads to keep up with the expansion. “We’re continuing to work on our internal network,’’ said Eva Rey, the director of community management for The Viera Company. “The area

around Duran Golf Club is part of the project for Lake Andrew to Stadium Parkway. The Town Center Avenue does not extend that far.’’ A lane is being added that will allow traffic headed north to easily turn onto Town Center Avenue. As new housing developments grow throughout

Viera, the connectivity will be crucial. “These are really typical projects — we’re building roads every single day,’’ Rey said. “This will provide connectivity for Stadium Parkway and Lake Andrew to connect. There are people who need to use that road.’’ V V

16 oz. dried figs ¼ cup of raisins ½ cup of dried cranberries 1 ¾ cups full milk 1 ½ cups of APF (all-purpose flour) 1 cup of white sugar (or half white and half light brown) 2 ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon salt 3 eggs — beaten ½ cup of melted butter 1 ½ cups of breadcrumbs 1 Tablespoon orange peel

Sauce

1 ½ cups (about 6 oz) of confectioners' sugar 2 Tablespoon of unsalted butter — room temp 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract 2 Tablespoon of brandy, rum or whiskey ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg Dash of allspice

Mix the butter with an electric mixer till it is soft. Add powdered sugar and the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Pre-heat oven to 350F Chop all dried fruits. In a medium saucepan, heat milk and chopped fruits over medium to low heat — do not boil. Cook for about 5 minutes stirring constantly. Set aside and allow the fruits to sit in the hot milk to soften. Mix sugar, flour, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt in a bowl with a whisk. Beat eggs for about 1 minute. Add the melted butter, breadcrumbs, orange peel and warm milk with dried fruits. Slowly add the flour mixture (a little at a time) and incorporate until mixed through. Spoon batter into a pre-greased Bundt and smooth the top. Place the Bundt into a deep pan and add some warm (not boiling) water so that there are about 2 fingers of water. (This is a French cooking term called Bain Marie). Bake for 2 hours or until pudding is firm and is pulling away from the pan. Allow to cool and invert the pan over a cake plate. Serve with sauce on the side. V V
